- 0:56said Pedro. I can tap dance, said Katie. Those are fun,
- 1:00said Miss Winkle. But how will you help the class?
- 1:04I don't know, said Katie. I have to think, said Pedro.
- 1:08That night, Pedro painted a poster. His brother Pauco wanted
- 1:12to help. He put his messy hands all over it.
- 1:16I can fix this, said Pedro. He painted Vote for Pedro.
- 1:20I will give you a helping hand. Good work, said
- 1:23his father. You are using your head Chapter two, speechless Pedro.
- 1:30The next day, Miss Winkle said, before we vote tomorrow,
- 1:34Katie and Pedro will each give a speech. You can
- 1:37tell us why you should be president. I'm not good
- 1:41at giving speeches, said Pedro. I am bragged, Katie wu
- 1:46Pedro tried to write a speech. Just then, Roddy threw
- 1:50a pencil at the goldfish bowl. Pedro jumped up and
- 1:53caught the pencil. You saved our fish, cheered Berry, And
- 1:58you found my favorite. Pedro tried to write a speech again,
- 2:03but he saw Jojo looking said what's wrong? He asked,
- 2:07I got a bad grade on my math test, said Jojo.
- 2:11Don't worry, said Pedro. You can do better tomorrow. Maybe

- 2:53Rody yelled, I want a boy to win, and I
- 2:56know what we should do? What, asked Jojo? Roddy said
- 3:01there are more boys than girls in this class. If
- 3:04all the boys vote for Pedro, he will win. That's
- 3:08not fair, said Pedro. You should vote for the best person,
- 3:12boy or girl. That was a wonderful speech, said miss Winkle.
- 3:16I'm voting for Pedro, said Barry, me too, said Jojo.
- 3:21Pedro is a team player. Pedro asked Katie, will we
- 3:25still be friends if I win? For sure? Said Katie,
- 3:29we will always be friends. They shook on it. The
- 3:33class counted the votes. Guess who won? Pedro. I promised
- 3:39to be a terrific president for everyone, he said, and
- 3:43he was our next. Several stories had the character of Barcas.
- 3:49The first book is called Barcas Dog Dreams and it
- 3:53was published by Chronicle Books. It I'll be right, you're
- 4:00twenty eighteen, and the author's Patricia mcclarklcklin. What baby found.
- 4:12Barcas was quiet. He didn't need his food. He didn't
- 4:15play with the baby. He just laid behind the couch.
- 4:18Barcus looked sad, I said, Barcus looks sick, said my mother.
- 4:23My father called the vet. She says, to bring baby too,
- 4:28she is due for a shot. Barcus lay on the
- 4:31back seat of the car. He didn't sit up and
- 4:34make dog noise much as on the window. Baby sat
- 4:37in her cat carrier, looking at Barcas. Barcus wag wagged
- 4:42his tail a bit. When we got to the vet's clinic.
- 4:45He liked dropping the vet. Robin sat down on the
- 4:48floor next to Barcas. He didn't try to wick Robin's
- 4:51face the way he always did. Robin looked in his ears.
- 4:55I think Barcas has an ear infection, she said. He's
- 4:59going to need to take some pills. Robin taught my
- 5:03father how to give Barcus' pills. She put the pill
- 5:06in some cheese and opened Barcas's mouth. She held his
- 5:10mouth shut. After a minute, Barcus swallowed. Bring him back
- 5:14next week, she said. Then rob took Baby out of
- 5:18her carrier and gave her a shot. Baby didn't care.
- 5:21She jumped out of Robin's arms and ran over to
- 5:24be with Barcus. Friends, said Robin with a smile. Every day,
- 5:29my father wrapped the pills and bread or cheese or
- 5:32turkey or ham or peanut butter. Every day Barcus took
- 5:37his pills, then went behind the couch. Then one day
- 5:40he came out from behind the couch. Soon Barcus wagged
- 5:44his tail at me. He played with baby. Barcus was better.
- 5:48The pills had worked, but Baby surprised us. She bat
- 5:52at Barcus's pills out from behind the couch. That's a
- 5:56week of pills, said my mother. Barcus did swallow any.
- 6:01I said it was time to take Barcas back to
- 6:04the vet. Barcus sat and looked out the window, his
- 6:07nose on the glass. He was happy to see Robin.
- 6:11She looked at one ear and then the other. You're
- 6:13all better, Barcus, she said. But he didn't take the pills,
- 6:17I said. Baby found them behind the couch. Robin laughed.
- 6:22I guess Barcas got better without them, she said. She
- 6:25led them to the scale. He gained weight while he
- 6:29was sick. How could that happened, she said, I know
- 6:33how it happened, said my mother. Haymm a turkey and
- 6:36bread and cheese and peanut butter, I said. Barcus likes
- 6:40peanut butter much better than pills. He likes peanut butter
- 6:43better than everything, said my mother. Barcus wagged his tail
- 6:47and whirled around. Excited. He barked, I think, Barkus said,
- 6:52peanut butter, said Robin, he did. I said, no more
- 6:56peanut butter. Barcus said, Robin, you'll get fat. Barcus didn't care.
- 7:01He looked Droppin's face anyway, a high note. It was
- 7:07the town's birthday. We carried a picnic basket and a
- 7:10blanket to the park. Barcus walked beside me. There were sparklers,
- 7:15there were balloons. I opened the dog park gate and
- 7:18Barcus ran inside. There were many dogs playing, then with
- 7:22short legs, Rudy the terrier who needed brushing, Molly the
- 7:27great per Lli with curls. A band played a peppy song.
- 7:34Barcus stopped playing and listen. Barcus watched. Barcus wants to
- 7:38play in the band. I said, that's one thing Barcas
- 7:42can't do, said my father. Next, four girls danced on stage.
- 7:47Barcus perked up his ears. He wagged his tail. Barcas
- 7:51wants to dance, I said, too bad, said my mother.
- 7:55There's another thing Barcas can't do. Catch that balloon. A
- 8:00man shouted, Barcas leaped up and caught the string in
- 8:03his mouth. Thank you, thank you, said the man. He
- 8:07handed the balloon to a little girl. She patted Barkas.
- 8:11Good catch, said the man. That's a good dog, the
- 8:14best dog in the world. I said, that's something Barkas
- 8:18can do, but we would all be surprised. There was
- 8:22one more thing Barcus could do. A lady in a
- 8:25fancy dress came on to the stage. The band conductor
- 8:28lifted his baton. The band played. The lady sang, then
- 8:33she coughed. She sneezed. Ooh oh, said my father. She'll
- 8:37never hit the high note. At the end of the song,
- 8:39the lady sang on. She coughed again, she sneezed twice,
- 8:43and then came the end of the song. The lady
- 8:46couldn't reach the high note, but someone could beside me.
- 8:50Barkus stood his nose in the air, his mouth and
- 8:53a little oh. Everyone turned to see where the high
- 8:56note was coming from. It's that dog, someone called a dog.
- 9:01Barkus held the note for so long. I finally patted him.
- 9:05You can stop, Barkas, I said. Barcus stopped. Everyone clapped,
- 9:10even Missus Fillmore clapped and there's another thing Barcas can do,
- 9:14I told my mother and father. The next day, there
- 9:18was a picture of Barcas in the newspaper. Under the
- 9:20picture was written, Barcas hits a high note the very
- 9:26long day. Knock, knock, knock. It was very early when
- 9:29someone pounded on the front door. It was Gin, who
- 9:32had a farm down the road. Where's your father, Nikki,
- 9:35she asked in bed. I said, you're wearing pajamas. My
- 9:40herd's gone, said Gin. My father came out of his bedroom.
- 9:44He was wearing pajamas too. What do you mean gone,
- 9:47he asked. Barcas paid it out from my bedroom. Baby
- 9:51came too. When I got up this morning, the fence
- 9:54was broken. Seven cows and two goats are gone, and
- 9:58bby too. Who's bebe, asked my father her donkey, I said.
- 10:04Barcas's ears perked up. Barcus liked boebe. My father got
- 10:08his wallet and car keys. We'll be back, he said.
- 10:12When your mother wakes up, tell her where we've gone.
- 10:16Barcus and Baby went out the door too. They were
- 10:19happy outside. I was happy to go back to bed, Nicki.
- 10:23It was my mother's voice. I sat up in bed,
- 10:27where's your father? He went to help Gen find her
- 10:29lost her. Where are Barcus and Baby? I'll find them,
- 10:34I said, But they weren't outside. They weren't inside, they
- 10:37weren't anywhere. Suddenly we heard noises in the yard. Barcus
- 10:43was there, Baby was there. And so we're seven cows,
- 10:46two goats with bells around their necks, and bb there
- 10:49was a white chicken tooth. My father's car screeched to
- 10:52a halt in front of the house. My father and
- 10:55Jen got out of the car. Oh, thank you all,
- 10:58said Jen. We couldn't find them anywhere. It wasn't me,
- 11:02said my mother. It wasn't me, I said, it was
- 11:05Barcus and baby. Barcus and Baby, said my father. You
- 11:10have your pajamas on, said my mother. Where did the
- 11:13chicken come from? Asked Jen. Isn't it your chicken, asked
- 11:18my mother. Nope, said Jen. But I'll take her home. Barcus,
- 11:23you and Baby can herd. I said, good job. You're
- 11:26the best dog and cat in the world. You are,
- 11:29said Jen. But Barcus didn't hear. Baby didn't hear. They
- 11:34were asleep. It had been a very long day trade about.
- 11:40There was a new dog next door. It was miss
- 11:42Daly's new dog. My sister gave me your dog because
- 11:46she has to travel, said miss Day. That's how I
- 11:49got Barkas, I said, from my uncle Everton Lucky, yes,
- 11:53said miss Day. Does Millie have toys? I asked, a
- 11:57few old stuff animals that smell bad. My sister socked
- 12:01so Milly won't miss her. Barcus and Milly liked each
- 12:04other right away. They played. They swam in the lake,
- 12:08they slept in the shade. When they played inside our house.
- 12:12Baby tried to play too. At first, Milly was afraid
- 12:15of the little animal that wasn't a dog, but soon
- 12:18they played together. Some days Barcas went to Milly's house,
- 12:23some days Milly went to Barcas's house. At night, they
- 12:26both sat in the windows of their houses and looked
- 12:28across the yard at each other. One morning, Barkus came
- 12:32home with Milly's sock. You stole Milly's sock, I said,
- 12:37Barcus borrowed it, said my mother. I'm sure Milly will
- 12:40come over and take it back home. But Milly didn't
- 12:43take her sock back home. She took the stuffed beaver
- 12:46with the flat, shiny tail. The next day, Barkus brought
- 12:50home a warn stuffed rabbit with one ear borrowed. I
- 12:54told my mother, back and forth, back and forth, they
- 12:57went trading toys. Soon all of Milly's toys were in
- 13:01Barcas's basket, and all of Barcas's toys were in Milly's
- 13:05toy tup. It's called a trade about, said miss Daily,
- 13:08A trade about. I said, maybe a little trade about again,
- 13:12And I was right. That very night, when Barkus and
- 13:15Nelly looked out the windows at each other. Barcas had
- 13:18his feaver, Nellie had her sock, a trade about dog dreams.
- 13:24A big storm was coming. My mother bought food and
- 13:28ice and candles. Why ice and candles, I asked. The
- 13:32electricitia might go off when the winds come, said my father.
- 13:36That sounds scary, I said. Storms can be scary, said
- 13:40my mother. But we'll be safe inside. Barcus didn't look scared,
- 13:44I said. Barcus and baby lay in a curled up heap. No,
- 13:48Barcus and baby are not scared, said my mother. It
- 13:52started to rain. You should take Barcas out now before
- 13:56it gets worse, said my father. He went outside to
- 13:59bring the law on chairs in side. Barcus didn't love rain.
- 14:03I had to push him outside. It's only rain, Barcus,
- 14:07I said. But the rain came harder and the wind
- 14:10was strong. My father chased after a chair that was
- 14:13blowing across the grass. Miss Daly came out of her
- 14:16house with Milly. She wore rain hat and coat and
- 14:20carried an umbrella. Milly didn't love the rain either. Miss
- 14:24Daly's hat blew away and her umbrella turned inside out.
- 14:28Then some shingles from Miss Daly's porch roof blew off
- 14:31above us, and a branch fell from our maple tree.
- 14:35My father grabbed Miss Daly's arm. We all ran to
- 14:38our house. Miss Daly looked a little scared. I was
- 14:42a little scared. Miss Daly hung up her coat. I
- 14:45took off my shoes. Barcus and Milly shook water all
- 14:49over us. That made Miss Daly smile. Come sit down,
- 14:53said my mother. You can stay with us until the
- 14:55storm is over, said my father. That's nice of you,
- 14:59said Miss Daily. There was a sudden loud clap of thunder.
- 15:04The lights went out. My father lit the candles, and
- 15:07my mother built a fire in the fireplace. The fire
- 15:11was cheerful. The dogs moved closer to the fire and slept.
- 15:15We ate sandwiches. As the wind shook the house, we
- 15:18would hear small tree branches falling on the roof. I
- 15:21wonder why baby and the dogs aren't scared, I said,
- 15:25they know we will take care of them, said miss Day,
- 15:28And they dream She added Milly yip yip yipped in
- 15:32her sleep. Barcus whined in his sleep. Then he moved
- 15:36his feet as if he were running. They're dreaming about
- 15:39chasing each other on a sunny day, said Missus. Day.
- 15:43I dreamed too, I said, mostly good dreams, sunny days
- 15:47and ice cream like Barcus, and Millie, said Miss Day.
- 15:50They're having dog dreams. I like dog dreams, said my mother.
- 15:55Me too, said my father, me too, I said. As
- 15:59it turned out that night, we all dreamed dog dreams.
- 16:02And when we woke the next morning, the wind and
- 16:04rain were gone, and there was the sun. Our next
- 16:08story is titled Barcas the Most Fun and it was
- 16:13published by Chronicle Books. It has a copyright year of
- 16:16twenty twenty one and the author of our book is
- 16:20Patricia mac laughlin. What Barcus knows Barcas is excited. He
- 16:29knows something. Barcus always knows something. My father puts a
- 16:33grill in the car. Barcus knows all about grills. Grills
- 16:37mean hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages. My mother puts tents and
- 16:41sleeping bags in the car. Barcus knows all about sleeping
- 16:45bags and tents camping. There's a tent for you and
- 16:49Barcus in one for your father and me, says my mother.
- 16:52What about baby, I asked. Barcus's ears go up. Camping
- 16:57is not for cats, says my mother. Mister Bailey will
- 17:00take care of baby. Barcas jumps up in the way
- 17:03back of the car. He likes to look out of
- 17:06the back window and wag his tail when we pass cars.
- 17:09Sometimes people wave at Barcas. I climb into the back
- 17:12seat with my fishing pole and three books to read.
- 17:15If it rains, I wave it miss daily As we
- 17:18drive away. Are you all right in the back? I
- 17:21called to Barcus. Whoof I know the sound of that
- 17:24Barcus wolf? He knows something. Barcas has a secret. When
- 17:29we get to our campsite, my mother opens the back
- 17:31door of the car. Barcus jumps out Baby jumps down
- 17:35behind him. That was Barcas's secret. Oh no, camping is
- 17:41not for cats, repeats my mother. But when we put
- 17:44up the first tent, Baby runs inside. Baby likes camping.
- 17:48I say, see, I see, says my mother. But she
- 17:53won't like the water. Water is not for cats. Barcus
- 17:57rows in the sand, sand flies everywhere. Grain Baby runs
- 18:01to the water. She jumps over little waves, shaking the
- 18:05water from her feet. I think baby likes the water too,
- 18:08I say, hmmm, says my mother. Baby will not like
- 18:12nighttime when the owl screech in the trees. But the
- 18:15night inside our tent, Barcus north, I watch baby. Baby
- 18:20sits in the tent screen opening, listening to the calls
- 18:24of owls, and she watches the moon rise over the water.
- 18:27Then baby sleeps. The next day, I do not catch
- 18:31a fish. Barcus runs with Baby, who finds something to chase.
- 18:35My father grills sausages. The day goes by too quickly.
- 18:40The cars packed to go home again. The drive is long.
- 18:44How are things back there, asked my father, looking at
- 18:46me in the rear view mirror. I answer with one
- 18:49of my father's expressions. As expected, I called to him,
- 18:54how are things back there, Barcas, I asked, Wolf is
- 18:58a contented wolf. I peer through the sleeping bags and tents.
- 19:02In the way back. There's Barcas. There's Baby, all curled up.
- 19:07The crazy cows of spring. Barcus stands by our car. Wolf.
- 19:13He knows that every spring we visit my grandparents farm
- 19:16in the hills. When my father opens the way back
- 19:19to put in suitcases, Barcas jumps right in. Smartest dog
- 19:25in the whole world. My father says, Baby jumps right
- 19:28in too, smartest cat too. I say. We drive past
- 19:33many farms. Barcus wags his tail at the cows in
- 19:36the meadows. He wolfs at horses. Then I see it
- 19:40the road to my grandfather Jesse's farm. Grandfather Jess waves
- 19:45to us from the barn door. Barcas races up to him.
- 19:50Jess hugs Barcas, he hugs me. The cows come out
- 19:54into the sunlight. I know them by name, Jane with
- 19:57a star on her face, Flora Nor a door, and
- 20:00Emmy the calf. Then it happens, maybe it is a
- 20:04sudden sweet breeze. The cows kick up their heels, They
- 20:08race around the middle. They run over to the fence
- 20:11and push through, splintering the top rail. Hey yells, just stop.
- 20:16Grandmother Bet runs out of the house and waves it's
- 20:20spring Jess. She calls the cows trot onto the main road.
- 20:24Barcas and I cut across the field to head them off.
- 20:28Baby follows the cow slow down when they see Barcas
- 20:32in front. The cows pass the small pond. Two ducks
- 20:37watch the horses in the middle look up, surprised. The
- 20:40cows go down South Street, headed to the village. Car
- 20:44stops so the cows can pass. The cows pass the school,
- 20:48they pass the post office. Barcas leaves them around the
- 20:52library twice. Green spring grass is growing there, and the
- 20:57cows are happy. Then the cows are tired. Wolf Barcas
- 21:01walks toward the road. The cows follow Barcas back up
- 21:05South Street. The cows walk over to walk over the
- 21:09stone Ridge bridge. They passed the small pond. They turn
- 21:12onto the farm road to their meadow. I hold the
- 21:15paddic door open for them. Jess feeds them grain to
- 21:18thank them for coming home. Happy Spring, just says to
- 21:22the cows. Wolf says Barcas. Barcas is tired. He's worked hard.
- 21:29But that night Mark Barcas won't come inside to sleep.
- 21:32He stays out in the field. He'll keep door company,
- 21:36says Jes, turning off the porch light. The next morning,
- 21:39I hear barcasoof. Barcus knows something. I hear Jess go
- 21:45out the door, baby, and I go out to see what.
- 21:48Barcas knows. Door has a calf, says Jess, happily. Barcas
- 21:54wolf softly, as if telling us, hush, it's a girl,
- 21:59said Jess. Get that's what Barcus and I have named her.
- 22:02What I ask, spring, says Jess. Wolf, says Barcas, and
- 22:07then Barcus lies down in the spring grass and goes
- 22:11to sleep. The most fun Barcus loves fall. He rows
- 22:16in the neat piles of rig leeves, jumping out at Baby.
- 22:20I love fall because I love the parade, Wolf, said Barcas.
- 22:24Barcus knows the ambling of the Calf's parade celebrates all
- 22:28the animals people love. There is a band and baton
- 22:32twirlers and floats. Once I rode on, wondrous is a
- 22:36red leaf. We can't take baby, says my father. You
- 22:40have to have leashes for the animals. You take to
- 22:43the parade. I bought a small cat leash for baby,
- 22:47says my mother. What ask my father? My mother slips
- 22:51the red leash around Baby's neck. She twists and escapes.
- 22:55My father and I laugh. Barcas waits by the car.
- 22:59Baby jumps on Barcas's back and up into the car.
- 23:02Smartest dog, says my father, smartest cat, I add. The
- 23:07parade begins with the horses and their lively coats. A
- 23:11band goes by, children pool wagons of cage chickens, some
- 23:15roosters with colorful red combs, and some silkies white and fluffy.
- 23:20The llamas walk by with their graceful necks. One comes
- 23:23over to touch noses with Barcus. Two large floats passed by,
- 23:28both filled with dogs. The first has good dogs painted
- 23:32on a banner. The second has a banner that says
- 23:35sort of good dogs. Making people laugh and clap. Barcus
- 23:39bark set them all wo woof. The dogs answer back
- 23:43in a din of barking, and then finally comes the calves,
- 23:47wearing wreaths of flowers around their necks. Barcus pulls his
- 23:51leash out of my father's hand and prances next to
- 23:55the band. Baby gets on Barcus's back. The crod cheers,
- 24:00and that is how a photographer takes a picture Barcus
- 24:03and Baby. The pictures in the town newspaper the next day.
- 24:07Beneath the picture is written, Barcus and friends the most fun. True.
- 24:12They did have fun, but I had the most fun
- 24:15of all. A winter's tail. Snowflakes fall as we pack
- 24:20to drive to our cabin. The skis and ski poles
- 24:23are on the car roof. Warm sleeping bags and pillows
- 24:27are in the way back. Barcus jumps right in. Smartest dog,
- 24:32says my father. Baby jumps right in, smartest cat, I add.
- 24:37The snow falls a little harder. As we drive, it
- 24:40begins to stick to the road. The wind begins to blow.
- 24:43There are no other cars on the road. Barcus sighs,
- 24:48he is bored. He flops down and goes to sleep.
- 24:50As we get closer to our cabin, the wind shakes
- 24:54the car. My father has to drive around some tree
- 24:56branches that have been blown down. Soon we see the
- 25:01hill that leads to the cabin will be there just
- 25:04in time. This will be a big storm, says my father.
- 25:07When my father stops the car, Barcus jumps down into
- 25:10a drift of snow. I carry baby tucked in my jacket.
- 25:14Let's go in and start a fire, says my father.
- 25:17Wolf agrees Barcas. The house's cold, no electricity, no heat
- 25:23or stacks of wood by the fireplace. Wolf Barcas knows.
- 25:28My father builds a fire. He sends light across the
- 25:30walls of the cabin. We put down the sleeping bags
- 25:33and pillows in front of the fire. My mother finds oil,
- 25:37lamps and candles. It will be dark soon, too stormy
- 25:42for skiing, says my mother. But what will we do?
- 25:46I ask? You can read one or two or three
- 25:49of your many books, says my father. We'll get out
- 25:52a huge shick saw puzzle, and we'll eat delicious food,
- 25:55says my mother. Wolf says Barcas. We can't grow out
- 26:00out in the wind and snow, says my father. I
- 26:04need lots of grilled chicken and biscuits, said my mother.
- 26:06And I brought frozen corn cops from summer. We'll warm
- 26:09them over the fire. Barcus Wolf's at the fireplace. My
- 26:13father puts more wood on the fire. We will have
- 26:20to finish this story the next time. This conclude our
- 26:24children's story are for today. Please join us next time
- 26:27as we will read more stories, fables and fairy tales.
