SPEAKER_03: Welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of In the Crease with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of deep two men's across.
• 0:19
SPEAKER_03: I'm your co-host, Kevin Stenstrom, and with me as always is our Dr.
• 0:24
  SPEAKER_03: Emmett Brown, Danny Moran.
• 0:27
  SPEAKER_03: Hey Danny.
• 0:29
SPEAKER_05: Kevin, you dig deep for these.
• 0:32
SPEAKER_03: I don't know where you come over.
• 0:33
SPEAKER_03: This is definitely an obscure reference, so bear with me.
• 0:37
  SPEAKER_03: Okay, bear with me.
• 0:38
  SPEAKER_03: Dr.
• 0:39
SPEAKER_03: Emmett Brown was Christopher Lloyd's character in Back to the Future.
• 0:44
SPEAKER_03: And that is kind of what I feel we are doing tonight.
• 0:46
SPEAKER_03: This episode is kind of our Back to the Future episode.
• 0:50
SPEAKER_03: I think I see where you're going with this.
• 0:53
SPEAKER_03: This is our final one in our series of D2 coaches going to D1.
• 0:58
SPEAKER_03: And this is really interesting because it is one of those that has come full circle.
• 1:04
  SPEAKER_03: It involves three coaches.
• 1:06
SPEAKER_03: They've all coached together at one time or another.
• 1:09
SPEAKER_03: Then they went their separate ways, and now they have reunited to take over the Queen's University lacrosse program.
• 1:16
SPEAKER_03: So it's kind of back to the future.
• 1:18
SPEAKER_03: They're all back together again.
• 1:19
  SPEAKER_03: What do you think?
• 1:21
SPEAKER_04: Reunited and it feels so good.
• 1:28
  SPEAKER_04: Reunited and it's understood.
• 1:33
  SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
• 1:33
SPEAKER_05: This that's a that was a great preview, Kevin, of what's to come.
• 1:38
  SPEAKER_05: That was like really.
• 1:39
SPEAKER_03: So actually, we could have cut out all what I said and just had you sing.
• 1:42
SPEAKER_03: That's the way I feel right now.
• 1:44
SPEAKER_03: That yours was so much better.
• 1:47
SPEAKER_03: So anyway, why don't we just welcome them in right now?
• 1:50
SPEAKER_03: What do you say, Danny?
• 1:51
SPEAKER_03: Head coach for the court.
• 1:52
  SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
• 1:53
SPEAKER_03: Nick Colpitts and his assistant coaches Joe Turner and Connor Doyle.
• 1:59
  SPEAKER_03: Welcome, gentlemen.
• 1:59
  SPEAKER_03: How you doing?
• 2:01
  SPEAKER_01: Good.
• 2:02
  SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having us.
• 2:04
  SPEAKER_01: Doing well going.
• 2:05
  SPEAKER_01: Good to see you.
• 2:06
SPEAKER_01: Good to see you again, boys.
• 2:08
SPEAKER_05: Good to see you guys again.
• 2:10
SPEAKER_05: Uh, guys, I can't tell you how proud I am of you guys.
• 2:14
SPEAKER_05: I know uh Coach Colpitz personally, I know Coach Turner personally, and Coach Doyle, just because you know those guys, you must be a pretty decent guy, too.
• 2:24
SPEAKER_05: You know, you might yeah, they're all right.
• 2:26
  SPEAKER_02: They're all right.
• 2:28
SPEAKER_05: No, but you did your thing at Alabama Huntsville, and you had uh Coach Turner come with you.
• 2:33
SPEAKER_05: And Coach Colpitz, you started out as a graduate assistant at Wingate and did Division Two.
• 2:39
SPEAKER_05: Coach Turner, you were at Wingate, Division Two, and now you guys are taking that next step, that that jump up to Division One.
• 2:48
SPEAKER_05: And Queen's University of Charlotte.
• 2:52
SPEAKER_05: Coach Colpitz, how how'd it come along?
• 2:54
SPEAKER_05: How did that all come about?
• 2:57
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, I think I'll start back um probably about six or seven years ago now when I was still living in Minnesota.
• 3:04
SPEAKER_01: Um, and Coach Turner actually was my coach at the University of St.
• 3:07
SPEAKER_01: Thomas for uh two seasons, and then uh, you know, he kind of wanted to get into college coaching, so he moved back to Long Island uh to work for Coach Doyle, or Coach Boyle.
• 3:18
SPEAKER_01: That always confuses me, the D's and the B's, but um to work for uh exactly.
• 3:25
SPEAKER_01: Um, but then you know, Dalling closed and Coach Turner and Coach Boyle moved down to Wingate.
• 3:30
SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, just by luck, uh Coach Turner reached out to me asking if I'd be interested in the graduate assistant position, and then you know, took that and uh moved to North Carolina for for two years as a GA and then kind of stayed on for two more years as an assistant.
• 3:46
SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, COVID, I think, threw you know everyone in the coaching profession for a little bit of a loop.
• 3:52
SPEAKER_01: So uh I saw posting uh an opportunity at JU and went and spent two years at Jacksonville and um you know wanted to get back to Charlotte, really enjoyed the area and you know was fortunate enough to be an assistant last year and um had a really good experience, um, learned a lot just you know from from all facets of of being involved with the Division I program and being really hands-on.
• 4:16
SPEAKER_01: And then uh just you know, kind of the way it all shook out, you know, the job opened up and and I interviewed and uh was fortunate enough to get the job.
• 4:24
SPEAKER_01: And I think I made two phone calls before I reached out to Coach Turner um asking if he wanted to come aboard.
• 4:31
SPEAKER_01: Um, I think it was my girlfriend, my dad, my mom, and coach Turner in that order, probably within the span of an hour or so.
• 4:37
SPEAKER_01: Um, and then we're fortunate enough to have Coach Doyle join us as well.
• 4:40
SPEAKER_01: So uh it's been surreal.
• 4:42
SPEAKER_01: Uh it's been a crazy story, but uh I'm really fortunate for how it all kind of shook out.
• 4:48
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I I have to say something about yeah, I have to say something about that.
• 4:52
SPEAKER_03: You take you take over and then you basically pull in a staff that decimates the D2 coaching ranks.
• 5:02
SPEAKER_03: Tell us about a little more about your assistants and why why you pulled them up with you.
• 5:08
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think, you know, I think a good head coach is aware of what his blind spots are.
• 5:13
SPEAKER_01: Um, I think that's part of the job, right?
• 5:15
SPEAKER_01: Is recognizing what your strengths are and pairing those up with with guys that you think are gonna help you out.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_01: Um, and I am so fortunate.
• 5:22
SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, obviously working with Coach Turner for man, four years at Wingate.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_01: Like I saw how he operated on a day in and day out basis.
• 5:30
SPEAKER_01: Um, and I know you know he was doing great things at Mars Hill.
• 5:34
SPEAKER_01: Um, and I wanted someone who I felt really comfortable with, um, someone where it wasn't gonna be a you know a two-month process of learning how to work with each other.
• 5:43
SPEAKER_01: We had to hit the ground win.
• 5:45
SPEAKER_01: Um his experience as a head coach, I think obviously pairs well with me, who, you know, I'm still you know trying to learn the ins and outs.
• 5:53
SPEAKER_01: Um, and so I thought he would have been a great resource there.
• 5:56
SPEAKER_01: Um, and then with Coach Doyle, uh their relationship, just talking with Coach Turner and kind of vetting who we thought would be a good fit.
• 6:04
SPEAKER_01: You know, his first name that he mentioned was Coach Doyle.
• 6:07
SPEAKER_01: Um, and after you know, meeting with Coach Doyle um and grabbing coffee and kind of chatting through the interview process, um, I thought it was a no-brainer.
• 6:14
SPEAKER_01: So uh, you know, I think then the narrative of Division II lacrosse is is kind of always kind of looked over, right?
• 6:22
SPEAKER_01: It's it's never, you know, the D threes and the D1s always have the history and traditions.
• 6:27
SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, there's good lacrosse and good coaching at the division two level, and and hopefully we can do our best to put that on display here at the division one level.
• 6:37
  SPEAKER_05: Very well said, coach.
• 6:38
  SPEAKER_05: Very well said.
• 6:39
SPEAKER_05: And Coach Turner, when you got that call, what'd you think, man?
• 6:43
SPEAKER_00: Oh, it was uh I think it's you know, I can probably speak the same for Connors that you know when you're a player, every kid kind of aspires to, you know, make it to the highest level you can.
• 6:56
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 6:57
SPEAKER_00: And when I first started coaching, I always had some aspirations of where I would go.
• 7:01
SPEAKER_00: And you know, once you make it to D2, you're very comfortable in your surroundings and you're used to the teams you're playing with, and you know, you're you're being a head coach and you're thinking about your day-to-day stuff of what you need to do to make the team better, and then boom, all of a sudden out of nowhere, there's this thought of, oh, here's you know, a possibility of you know something you never really thought could actually happen, or you know, maybe that door was might have been closed a couple years ago because you didn't really get in at the right time.
• 7:27
SPEAKER_00: So I think it was just the excitement of what it could be.
• 7:31
SPEAKER_00: Um and then not only that, after spending four years at Wingate and you know, obviously working with Coach Colbitz and um you know, seeing the the university here at Queens and like seeing the teams that we played against and seeing the facilities and just seeing everything about the university, we were like, That place is beautiful.
• 7:51
SPEAKER_00: So it was kind of a trifecta of you know not only being able to coach with someone that you already know and having that chemistry, but you know, a beautiful school and and a dream all in one is uh kind of what made it made it pretty shocking.
• 8:05
SPEAKER_00: Um, I know as soon as as soon as Coach Kolbitz called me, I called uh Connor.
• 8:10
SPEAKER_00: I called Coach Dill right away.
• 8:11
SPEAKER_00: And I was like, what do you think, man?
• 8:14
SPEAKER_00: Like, what do you think?
• 8:15
SPEAKER_00: Like, do you think this is a good idea?
• 8:16
SPEAKER_00: And you know, so it was kind of like a even before you know we even got to that point, it was uh, you know, we were all we were all kind of intertwined already.
• 8:25
SPEAKER_00: So um I think that's you know, you guys already mentioned it, but that's what makes this so special is yeah, you know, being able to work with people that you trust because we talk about trust with our players all the time, but you know, we already have each other's backs and kind of already know each other, and you know, I feel like that you know, a new staff coming together makes that even better.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_03: And I want to play off that, Coach Turner, for a second and go to you, Coach Doyle.
• 8:46
SPEAKER_03: It's really interesting what you said.
• 8:47
SPEAKER_03: And when I I love how you said, like, you coach called Coach Doyle, you're like, what do you think?
• 8:52
  SPEAKER_03: I I don't really know.
• 8:53
SPEAKER_03: It sounds like a good idea, but I don't know.
• 8:55
SPEAKER_03: Because both of you were making such great strides at both Mars Hill and UAH and really turning those programs um around.
• 9:05
SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously, Mars Hill had been there before, Coach.
• 9:07
SPEAKER_03: You were starting to get it back there.
• 9:08
SPEAKER_03: Uah the last couple of years, coach.
• 9:10
SPEAKER_03: My God, last year was just a phenomenal season to watch.
• 9:13
SPEAKER_03: So you mentioned it, Coach Turner, of like what you did.
• 9:17
SPEAKER_03: Talk about your mindset, Coach Doyle, when you got asked about maybe coming on and and and then your thought process.
• 9:26
SPEAKER_05: Do you think Turner was messing with you?
• 9:28
SPEAKER_05: Did you think Turner was messing with you?
• 9:30
  SPEAKER_02: I did, I did, yeah.
• 9:32
SPEAKER_02: You know, it's funny because you know, Coach Turner had asked me um, you know, what he should do, and you know, I tell him it's a no-brainer, and then all of a sudden things were flipped over to me, and you know, I was all of a sudden I had you know my world turned upside down.
• 9:46
SPEAKER_02: So um it was funny how it kind of played back to me there um on that side.
• 9:50
SPEAKER_02: But I I gotta tell you, I mean, it was you know, again, a surreal moment, you know, to kind of think about it and to be you know looking at that.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_02: But you know, I I look at our program at UAH and looked at it and what we had done there over the last three years, and um, it was pretty special, you know, a team in Alabama that you know no one thought could do anything, and that you know, it was just a bunch of guys out there that were you know, nerds at an engineering school.
• 10:13
SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, we flipped that program around, you know, and started doing some really good things.
• 10:17
SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, all of a sudden I'm I'm getting a call to uh to go to Queens, and it was a massive rival of mine in division two, being at Belmont Abbey in Queens.
• 10:26
SPEAKER_02: Um, and then right, right.
• 10:28
SPEAKER_02: Now I get to kind of look at it at the division one level, and you know, leaving Alabama Huntsville was a very tough decision to make.
• 10:35
SPEAKER_02: But you know, the opportunity here, just the upside of Queens, what we can do here is just through the roof.
• 10:40
SPEAKER_02: Um, and I'm extremely excited, you know, to get to work with this group of guys that you know have been nothing but amazing so far.
• 10:47
SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, very exciting times.
• 10:49
  SPEAKER_05: Awesome.
• 10:50
SPEAKER_05: First of all, first of all, the city of Charlotte is just absolutely beautiful, it's just a gorgeous city.
• 10:56
  SPEAKER_05: You'll see me a lot.
• 10:58
SPEAKER_05: But Coach Colpitz, now that's a warning.
• 11:00
  SPEAKER_05: That's a warning to you three.
• 11:02
  SPEAKER_00: Sideline pass.
• 11:03
  SPEAKER_00: Let's get them a sideline pass.
• 11:06
  SPEAKER_05: Here we go.
• 11:07
  SPEAKER_05: I'm psyched, I'm pumped.
• 11:08
SPEAKER_05: But Coach Colpitz, now that you're at the helm, and what's on the agenda to get going like first?
• 11:18
SPEAKER_05: Like, what's what are you trying to get accomplished right away?
• 11:23
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you know, we talked about it as a staff when we all got together, um, was just laying a foundation uh of what this year is and what our identity is going to be.
• 11:34
SPEAKER_01: Um, I think it's really important to know what you stand for before you start rolling the ball out and practicing.
• 11:39
SPEAKER_01: Um, so we identify it as a staff, you know, areas of the game that we really wanted to focus on in the fall and uh the skills and the menu that comes with being successful in those areas.
• 11:51
SPEAKER_01: Um and those are things that we're we're you know going through.
• 11:54
SPEAKER_01: We have 26 freshmen um in this class, and then we have a lot of returners who are who are learning things for the first time.
• 12:03
SPEAKER_01: Um, so we as a coaching staff have to be a little patient um in what our expectations are um because we are essentially building from the ground up in terms of what our expectations are.
• 12:14
SPEAKER_01: Um, so you know, my biggest thing is is just being uh, you know, having a 30,000 foot view of where we're trying to go um and understanding that it's not going to happen tomorrow, but it's gonna be a series of good days stacked on top of each other.
• 12:29
SPEAKER_01: Um, and and sometimes, you know, I can get a little impatient.
• 12:32
SPEAKER_01: I think Coach Turner and Coach Doyle could, you know, probably agree with that, but it's just you know, looking at the possibilities of this school.
• 12:39
SPEAKER_01: I mean, you said it, you know, Charlotte's a beautiful area, the school, you know, making the transition to division one and and kind of the momentum behind that decision.
• 12:48
SPEAKER_01: Um, and then, you know, just the the amount of interest that we've got from from players uh makes it a really good situation.
• 12:56
SPEAKER_01: I mean, you mentioned the you know banking industry and all the professional sports opportunities around here.
• 13:02
SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I I really think if we do our job, um, you know, we can you know be competitive.
• 13:08
SPEAKER_01: Um, it's just gonna be up to us and our guys on on how quickly that becomes the reality.
• 13:14
  SPEAKER_03: That's great, coach.
• 13:14
SPEAKER_03: I had the same question that, but Danny stole it, so he's a good man for having that in front of you.
• 13:19
  SPEAKER_03: But no, you're you're all good.
• 13:21
  SPEAKER_03: You're all good.
• 13:22
SPEAKER_03: I uh I'll follow up on that and kind of what you guys have been talking about.
• 13:25
SPEAKER_03: So all three of you already have a bond, maybe not all three of you together, coaching, but there's a bond connection between all three of you.
• 13:34
SPEAKER_03: And as you look to build that program, and you talked about it, Coach Turner.
• 13:38
  SPEAKER_03: So I'll ask you.
• 13:38
SPEAKER_03: You know, you talk about trust with the team.
• 13:40
SPEAKER_03: How do you think your bond as coaches is going to translate or transcend to the culture and what you're trying to build in a D1 contender at Queens?
• 13:54
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think leadership trickles down.
• 13:56
SPEAKER_00: So when you when the players see us, how we treat each other and how we interact both on and off the field, I think that's you know, we're leading by example, which is a little cliche.
• 14:07
SPEAKER_00: But you know, when they see us working together and interacting and being collaborative, and you know, there's an there's an idea and we're all you know listening and trying to you know get to the same place with that idea, you can do it 13 different ways, but you know, kind of getting to that one, you know, that one path that makes it connected for all of us is important.
• 14:24
SPEAKER_00: And I think when the players see that, you know, and they're like, hey, the coaching staff's all connected, that that can really, you know, build a lot of faith from you know, a maybe a new voice that they haven't heard before and they don't really know, you know, where we're from or what we are.
• 14:38
SPEAKER_00: Um, so I think that's great, you know.
• 14:40
SPEAKER_00: And then Coach Colbus kind of touched on it before, but when you bring in, you know, a new coaching philosophy, I guess you could say, is you know, everyone's learning it for the first time.
• 14:51
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, not only are the freshmen, but everyone is, and because we're so connected as a staff, it's one voice together.
• 14:58
SPEAKER_00: There's no confusion of like, I think Coach Doyle likes it like this, but let me go check with him.
• 15:03
  SPEAKER_00: Like it's right, we're unified.
• 15:05
SPEAKER_00: Like it's one voice, it's coming together.
• 15:07
SPEAKER_00: We all know exactly what we want.
• 15:08
  SPEAKER_00: So when there's a question, it's one answer.
• 15:11
SPEAKER_00: And that makes it a lot simple for a player who's coming in from you know many states away and he just wants to do the right thing for coach.
• 15:18
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, especially because he's not gonna hear one thing and then he's gonna turn around and say, But Coach Turner said this, right?
• 15:23
SPEAKER_03: I mean, and that can happen, and it's not no one's fault.
• 15:25
  SPEAKER_03: That happens before.
• 15:27
SPEAKER_03: Um I I just lost my train of thought on my my next question there.
• 15:31
SPEAKER_03: Danny, you got any right there?
• 15:34
SPEAKER_05: I just want to know like what conference are you guys in?
• 15:38
  SPEAKER_05: Coach Culp, Coach Colpitz?
• 15:40
SPEAKER_05: What conf because I don't know crap about D1, to be honest with you.
• 15:45
  SPEAKER_05: I'm a D2 guy.
• 15:46
SPEAKER_05: I mean, all three of my sons.
• 15:48
SPEAKER_05: My first son was 2009, you know.
• 15:51
SPEAKER_05: So that's how long I've been sticking around the D2 ranks.
• 15:55
SPEAKER_03: So what that's why that is why Danny and I will never graduate to a D1 podcast, and we're gonna stick to what we know.
• 16:02
  SPEAKER_03: D2.
• 16:04
SPEAKER_01: And and I I will say you you guys said it uh before we jumped on, uh, asking me if I have you know ever listened.
• 16:12
SPEAKER_01: And I will tell you this my recruiting trips in eight hours and 12 hours in the car.
• 16:17
SPEAKER_01: There were a lot of uh you know podcasts by you guys getting me through those drives.
• 16:22
SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I never forgot my roots either, you know.
• 16:25
SPEAKER_01: So you know, you always have a fan in me, but uh that's awesome.
• 16:29
  SPEAKER_05: That's awesome.
• 16:30
  SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
• 16:31
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, me and Coach Boyle actually text back and forth asking if we listen to the latest episode over at Wingate.
• 16:37
SPEAKER_01: So uh, you know, you so Boyle actually listens?
• 16:40
  SPEAKER_01: Really?
• 16:41
  SPEAKER_01: He does.
• 16:41
  SPEAKER_05: I gotta watch what I say.
• 16:43
SPEAKER_01: Oh, he does for sure.
• 16:45
  SPEAKER_01: He does.
• 16:46
  SPEAKER_01: Um, that's great.
• 16:48
SPEAKER_01: But to uh yeah, to get back to your question though.
• 16:51
SPEAKER_01: So we're in the uh A Sun conference, so uh it's it's it's it's a lot of uh, you know, it's not a regionalized conference in lacrosse.
• 17:00
SPEAKER_01: So we're we're fortunate enough to be able to play teams like Utah and Air Force and Lindenwood, just kind of going west to east.
• 17:07
SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, we play Detroit Mercy, Cleveland State, Robert Morris, Mercer, Jacksonville.
• 17:13
SPEAKER_01: Um, gosh, I'm probably missing one or two, but um Bellerman.
• 17:18
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 17:18
  SPEAKER_01: Wow.
• 17:19
SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, it's it's a cool conference for our guys to play in.
• 17:24
SPEAKER_01: Um, because I think when we were in the South Atlantic conference, a lot of them were bus trips, and maybe you had one or two overnights where you know you would go to Wingate uh, you know, early in the morning and get back that night, where pretty much every away game is a is an overnight stay and and possibly even a flight.
• 17:40
SPEAKER_01: Um to give our guys that experience of being able to, you know, get on a plane and fly to Utah is pretty surreal because at the end of the day, most of our roster right now is recruited as a division two athlete.
• 17:52
SPEAKER_01: Um and this opportunity of being a division one athlete kind of you know, for lack of a better term, fell into their lap, so to say.
• 17:58
SPEAKER_01: Um, so for those guys to experience it, I think it's pretty special.
• 18:02
  SPEAKER_05: That's awesome, man.
• 18:04
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's awesome.
• 18:05
SPEAKER_03: All right, so Coach Doyle, I've got kind of a an off-the-wall question, and it really comes from something my my son said, who was coached by both both Cole Pitts and Turner.
• 18:15
SPEAKER_03: He said that Coach Cole Pitts, and you're since you're the new guy with him, this is why I'm asking you, reminds him of a Ted Lasso type of coach.
• 18:23
SPEAKER_03: My question to you is do you agree?
• 18:26
SPEAKER_02: Uh well, since I love Ted Lasso in every way, I'm gonna say absolutely.
• 18:31
SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't know if he uh if he wears the khakis as well as Ted Lasso does, but does he dance like him?
• 18:39
SPEAKER_02: You know, I haven't seen it yet.
• 18:40
  SPEAKER_02: Haven't seen it yet.
• 18:42
SPEAKER_02: Uh, but it's early days, so maybe.
• 18:46
  SPEAKER_03: That's that's great.
• 18:47
SPEAKER_03: I I had to throw that in there.
• 18:49
SPEAKER_03: Coach Kolpitch, you talked about and Coach Surner, what you're kind of trying to do right immediately.
• 18:56
SPEAKER_03: And I I kind of want to bring that to the next step.
• 18:58
SPEAKER_03: What are your, you know, you talked about you got D2 players, you've recruited 26.
• 19:03
SPEAKER_03: What are your kind of your future top projects?
• 19:05
SPEAKER_03: What do you say your number your top three going forward in the next two years or year and a half to get to you where you're gonna be at the top of the Yesun?
• 19:17
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I uh that's what I expect from you guys personally.
• 19:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and that's our goal too.
• 19:22
SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm not gonna sit here and say, you know, our expectations are anything but that, because we wouldn't be doing our job if we were settling for something lower than that.
• 19:31
SPEAKER_01: Um, but I think the most important thing is establishing what our culture is and what our expectations of our player is and never wavering on those standards.
• 19:39
SPEAKER_01: Um, I think first and foremost, if guys can understand what is expected them from them day in and day out, um, that is the whole, you know, kind of backbone of what a program is and and how success is sustainable.
• 19:52
SPEAKER_01: I think we talked about it as we don't want to be a team that has one good year and one bad year.
• 19:57
SPEAKER_01: I think that's something I learned from Coach Boyle at Wingate was, you know, he talked always about the program, um, and no one's ever bigger than the program.
• 20:04
SPEAKER_01: So I think it's important for our guys to understand that.
• 20:06
SPEAKER_01: Um, and then just trying to, you know, kind of be delicate in our roster makeup.
• 20:12
SPEAKER_01: Uh, again, I think you can do this transition one of two ways.
• 20:16
SPEAKER_01: You can, you know, show up like Deion Sanders and say, you know, everyone's gone, I'm bringing my own guys.
• 20:23
SPEAKER_01: Um, but that just that's a different situation than what we're in.
• 20:27
SPEAKER_01: Um, a lot of our guys committed when the school was division two and had no say in the matter um of a transition to division one.
• 20:35
SPEAKER_01: Um, and something that I always talk about is is making this a true family atmosphere.
• 20:40
SPEAKER_01: And I don't think I'd be speaking truthfully um and living that if I just came in and took an axe to a roster.
• 20:46
SPEAKER_01: Um, so you know, every guy that was on the team, you know, that was when it was division two, um, has the opportunity to, you know, continue to be on the team.
• 20:55
SPEAKER_01: But the expectation is that they're continuing to improve and and elevating their game.
• 21:00
SPEAKER_01: Um, and we told them last year, you know, our job is to out-recruit you, and your job is to, you know, if you're playing, you know, keep your job, or if you're not playing, you know, continue to improve.
• 21:11
SPEAKER_01: Um, and so, you know, what we tell recruits right now is, you know, we're probably, from a playing perspective, going to be the youngest division one lacrosse team in the country for probably the next two or three years.
• 21:24
SPEAKER_01: Um, but that's by design.
• 21:26
SPEAKER_01: Um, because it's it's my hope that if we do our job as as coaches um and our guys get the experience that by the time our freshmen this year are, you know, juniors and seniors, now they have more playing experience than any other junior and senior classes in the country.
• 21:41
SPEAKER_01: And you hope that you can use that momentum um and hopefully do some things that maybe some people um weren't expecting of you.
• 21:49
SPEAKER_01: Um, but again, I don't think it's something that is gonna happen tomorrow.
• 21:53
SPEAKER_01: Um, it's gonna be a steady process.
• 21:55
SPEAKER_01: And, you know, we just have to do our jobs of of holding our standards every day and.
• 22:00
SPEAKER_01: Making sure that we're bringing in the right people.
• 22:02
SPEAKER_01: I think that's the one thing I learned during my time at Jacksonville.
• 22:05
SPEAKER_01: You know, we had a year where we were seven and seven, and then the very next year we were 14 and 3.
• 22:11
SPEAKER_01: And the only difference really was the mentality of the guys in the locker room, um, where they were they were grown men coming to work every day or coming into the locker room every day.
• 22:21
SPEAKER_01: They weren't just, you know, showing up and and trying to go through the motions.
• 22:25
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 22:26
  SPEAKER_05: Makes sense.
• 22:27
  SPEAKER_05: Well, you know what?
• 22:28
SPEAKER_05: All three of you made, you know, you made your bones in division two.
• 22:31
SPEAKER_05: And all three of you were very successful in division two.
• 22:34
SPEAKER_05: Coach Doyle, if you could had to pick one thing that was is gonna help you at the D1 level, what would that be?
• 22:43
SPEAKER_02: Um, I think it's attention to detail um that I've kind of picked up over my years of coaching is just that you know, you can't leave any rock, you know, uh unturned, and you got to really touch on all the the bases of your team.
• 22:56
SPEAKER_02: Um, and so I think coming into division one and having that mentality with so many young guys, you know, it's just implementing what we want to implement day after day and repetitively hitting on some things and um having that attention to detail, you know, with all these guys, I think truly makes a difference.
• 23:12
SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, I've learned that over my years, and now getting to put it into the division one landscape, I'm uh I'm excited to see the turnout of it.
• 23:21
  SPEAKER_05: That's fantastic.
• 23:22
SPEAKER_05: And Coach Turner, same question for you.
• 23:24
SPEAKER_05: What's the one thing that you think you can take from you know the division two ranks that's gonna help you at the division one rank?
• 23:31
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think um just like being moldable is the biggest thing that I've learned over the years.
• 23:36
SPEAKER_00: You know, you you have a lot of success at Wingate, and then you go to a different school, you know, and this is Alabama Huntsville was much different of an academic school than Wingate was.
• 23:44
SPEAKER_00: So you're gonna go to different universities regardless of the division, and you're gonna have a different student, you're gonna have a different atmosphere, you're gonna have a different culture that's the campus provides and the athletics provides.
• 23:56
SPEAKER_00: So, kind of really learning that lacrosse and coaching doesn't isn't like a one thing fits all.
• 24:02
SPEAKER_00: You know, every school is gonna be a little different.
• 24:04
SPEAKER_00: And the way that you speak to the student and the way that you recruit the kids, everything is gonna be a little different everywhere.
• 24:10
SPEAKER_00: And if you try to treat it the same at every little spot, you may not have the same success.
• 24:15
SPEAKER_00: So I think learning, you know, from all the universities that I've been at, everything is gonna be a little bit different where you go.
• 24:20
SPEAKER_00: So being able to be adjustable to the players first and learning what works at Queens, and then making sure that that fits our message and fits what Coach Kolpitz wants of me, um, I think is the biggest thing that I've learned and and hopefully to bring with because I think that there's some really good kids at every level.
• 24:39
SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know, the attention to detail, like Coach Doyle said, and the effort and sacrifice that these guys have shown here at Queens has been, you know, something that's been a bit of a shock to me.
• 24:49
SPEAKER_00: So I think that, you know, when you put in the amount of work that our guys are putting in, it's only a matter of time until they're successful.
• 24:55
SPEAKER_00: It's just our job to make sure we're putting them in the right place to be successful.
• 25:00
  SPEAKER_03: That's that's excellent.
• 25:02
SPEAKER_03: I I love the what you all said about that.
• 25:04
SPEAKER_03: I've got one more question for you, uh Coach Colpitz.
• 25:08
SPEAKER_03: And it kind of goes to, you know, we talked to Coach Ryan, he's kind of bringing in a whole new staff.
• 25:12
SPEAKER_03: You got to kind of get the players bought in, right?
• 25:17
SPEAKER_03: Same thing happened to Coach Levine when he went to LIU.
• 25:20
SPEAKER_03: You were an assistant at first and then took over.
• 25:24
SPEAKER_03: Do you think that makes it you're gonna put your own stamp on it without a doubt, but do you think that helped the transition of you becoming a head coach because they already knew you, and then knowing based on your bond with Coach Turner and Coach Doyle is helping kind of bridge that gap quicker?
• 25:44
SPEAKER_03: I guess is my question.
• 25:46
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think whenever you know you have the benefit of knowing, you know, probably half the roster and being a head coach, it's probably a little easier for the transition, I think, for the guys, especially, right?
• 25:58
SPEAKER_01: Because, you know, hopefully if I'm doing my job correctly, they trust me and trust what I'm telling them.
• 26:04
SPEAKER_01: And I think if they trust me and I bring in guys and say, listen, uh, you know, these are the guys that I selected and that I want to do this with, hopefully it's easier for them to, you know, see those guys and be able to trust them right away.
• 26:17
SPEAKER_01: Um, so I do think it was helpful.
• 26:19
SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, it it's been a really good fall.
• 26:23
SPEAKER_01: Um, and our returners have been awesome.
• 26:25
SPEAKER_01: Just with I, and again, maybe I'm speaking for for both Coach Doyle and Coach Turner, but I I don't think there's been much of a drop-off or like a questioning.
• 26:34
SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, our guys have have really embraced the change and are really excited about it.
• 26:38
SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, I couldn't be more pleased with with how our guys are are kind of responding to all the changes.
• 26:44
  SPEAKER_05: That's awesome, Coach.
• 26:46
  SPEAKER_03: That is.
• 26:47
SPEAKER_03: And I just want to say, guys, we really appreciate you coming on.
• 26:51
SPEAKER_03: I'll tell you what, I was never a Queens fan.
• 26:54
SPEAKER_03: You guys know that from where I come, where I sat before, but I'm totally bought in.
• 27:00
SPEAKER_03: I'm bought into any, I'm bought into Linenwood.
• 27:03
SPEAKER_03: I've bought into the everyone going from D2 to D1.
• 27:06
SPEAKER_03: And obviously, especially Queens since I know a little bit better.
• 27:09
SPEAKER_03: And with you three coaching, I think really the sky's the limit.
• 27:13
SPEAKER_03: You guys can be at the top of the A Sun and you can be competing for, you know, getting into the NCA tournament and making your your place known.
• 27:20
SPEAKER_03: And I'm really excited to watch it, and I definitely be watching this year in between all my other D2 games I gotta watch.
• 27:26
SPEAKER_03: But uh we really appreciate the time you took to come on with us tonight.
• 27:30
SPEAKER_03: It's been phenomenal, and and it was great seeing all of you.
• 27:33
SPEAKER_05: Personally, personally, I think it's I think it stinks that you guys are going, all right.
• 27:38
SPEAKER_05: I I don't like it at all because I love you guys, I have such a rapport with you guys, and it goes back a long time.
• 27:46
SPEAKER_05: And I appreciate what you do and what you have done in the past, and I know you as gentlemen and as men and as people, and Queens are getting they're getting great, a great group of guys with you three.
• 28:00
SPEAKER_05: And uh D2 is gonna miss you guys, and and we're gonna miss Queens.
• 28:04
  SPEAKER_05: And you know what?
• 28:05
SPEAKER_05: Some of the best games I've ever seen are those Queens Wingate games that you know and the SAC tournament games, and they've been unbelievable games, and you know, the rivalry and that collegiate whole thing was great.
• 28:17
SPEAKER_05: The only thing was missing was the bands, you know, at the end zones.
• 28:21
  SPEAKER_05: But you know what?
• 28:22
SPEAKER_05: D2 is is gonna miss you guys, and we wish you nothing but success over there at Queens, and you know, we'll be in touch, you know that.
• 28:29
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think if I can speak for for these guys that first we thank you um for what you guys do for the division.
• 28:37
SPEAKER_00: Um, we're very proud of our roots, and I think that also makes us very excited uh for our journey because we're proud of where we came from and we're almost taking a little pressure to represent the division because the division has a lot of talent and a lot of great coaches, and we're just honored that we can say that we came from there and now we're in a new place, you know, trying to represent.
• 28:58
SPEAKER_00: So, first, thank you, and uh, we hope that we can be uh the D2's team's finest.
• 29:04
SPEAKER_03: All right, Danny, you said it they are going to be messed.
• 29:08
  SPEAKER_03: I didn't say it up there.
• 29:10
SPEAKER_03: You I'm glad you did say it to them because they are gonna be missed in D2.
• 29:15
SPEAKER_05: Oh, definitely, you know, they're they're again, they've all been successful at the Division II ranks.
• 29:23
SPEAKER_05: And now they're gonna take it and and and form that bond as a coaching bond.
• 29:28
SPEAKER_05: And they're friends, you know, and yeah, I think I think you know, they said it correctly.
• 29:32
SPEAKER_05: It's really gonna help the the kids uh see that these coaches are legit, they they know what they're doing, and they're together on this, and it's gonna be I think it's gonna be a good thing with those three guys.
• 29:44
  SPEAKER_05: I really do.
• 29:45
  SPEAKER_05: I do too.
• 29:47
  SPEAKER_05: And you know what?
• 29:48
  SPEAKER_05: They're good recruiters.
• 29:49
SPEAKER_05: Uh you know, uh Coach Turner's a good recruiter, he's got great eye.
• 29:52
SPEAKER_05: I mean, some of the some of the players that I know that he brought to Wingate, and some of the players that he got to go to Mars Hill are really, really good.
• 30:01
SPEAKER_05: So he knows good players.
• 30:03
SPEAKER_03: And you look at what Coach Doyle did uh at UAH.
• 30:07
  SPEAKER_03: Phenomenal.
• 30:08
SPEAKER_03: He's did a phenomenal job there, a remarkable job there.
• 30:12
SPEAKER_03: And you know Colpitz himself in his assistant roles where he's been.
• 30:18
  SPEAKER_03: Wingate, Jacksonville, Queens.
• 30:22
SPEAKER_03: He's part of that too.
• 30:23
SPEAKER_03: So I think that's a really good mix to bring in the the folks they need to get to that top of the A Sun and see what they can do.
• 30:29
SPEAKER_03: And I think they've got the right perspective of held holding the kids to a standard, their players to a standard, and keeping the same message and then driving to that and holding that game that way.
• 30:44
  SPEAKER_05: I agree with you.
• 30:44
SPEAKER_05: And I'm I'm gonna miss Queens being being in Division II, yeah, and be and being in the sack because I've been watching that team for a long, long time, Kev, and there are always been a great team, yeah.
• 30:56
SPEAKER_05: A spunky, scrappy, fighting, great lacrosse team.
• 31:01
SPEAKER_05: And you know, with those sack tournaments, very, very good fundamentals all from that team.
• 31:06
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, and those sack tournaments when Queens came in.
• 31:10
SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know, they were great, they they would put beatdowns on people.
• 31:14
SPEAKER_05: So Queens is a good lacrosse school, and it's a good school, and it's in a beautiful part of Charlotte.
• 31:20
SPEAKER_05: It's just gorgeous there, and I wish all three of them all the best of luck in the world.
• 31:25
  SPEAKER_05: I really do.
• 31:25
SPEAKER_05: I have a lot of uh respect for all three of them.
• 31:29
  SPEAKER_03: I agree with you.
• 31:30
SPEAKER_03: So just as we turn the page, next on the list are episodes on our coaching changes.
• 31:36
SPEAKER_03: And first up are going to be not real coaching changes, but all the new programs.
• 31:41
SPEAKER_03: Are you excited for those?
• 31:43
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, man, and there's a lot of new programs coming into Division II this year, Kevin.
• 31:47
SPEAKER_05: So there's a lot to talk about and a lot going on in division two.
• 31:52
SPEAKER_05: And we're in the fall, and it's almost midterms almost already, you know.
• 31:57
SPEAKER_05: And uh it's we're in the middle of fall, ball, and it's go time soon.
• 32:02
SPEAKER_05: It's right around the corner.
• 32:04
  SPEAKER_03: 100%.
• 32:05
  SPEAKER_03: And with that, that's a wrap.
• 32:08
  SPEAKER_03: That's a wrap, yeah.
