- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three
- 0:19Speaker 1: and fourteen and today the show. We're back for another
- 0:22Speaker 1: rut Fresh Radio episode in which we're getting the latest
- 0:25Speaker 1: intel from across the country on the White Tail Rut,
- 0:29Speaker 1: how deer activities changing in the tactics that are working
- 0:32Speaker 1: right now? All right, welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast,
- 0:46Speaker 1: brought to you by on X. It is rut Fresh
- 0:49Speaker 1: Radio here for you this week in which we're giving
- 0:52Speaker 1: you our weekly update from myself and from Spencer new
- 0:57Speaker 1: Hearth and from a series of hunters all across the
- 0:59Speaker 1: count tree on what's happening in the woods. What's the
- 1:02Speaker 1: progress of the rut, Howard dear acting, what contactics are
- 1:06Speaker 1: working right now? That's we're gonna do. And it is November.
- 1:10Speaker 1: No more exciting time to be in the woods. There's
- 1:11Speaker 1: no more exciting time to listen to rout Fresh Radio
- 1:14Speaker 1: as far as I'm concerned. Um, And we've got all
- 1:17Speaker 1: sorts of good stuff today, don't win, ma'am? Yeah? Um?
- 1:20Speaker 1: This is the time of year where you could just
- 1:24Speaker 1: about not listen to podcast. I hope that you do,
- 1:27Speaker 1: because I think you're still gonna get good info. But
- 1:29Speaker 1: kind of everything goes out the window when it is
- 1:34Speaker 1: these first you know, like fifteen days of November. The
- 1:38Speaker 1: weather doesn't really matter, the moon doesn't really matter. Um,
- 1:42Speaker 1: the biggest thing that matters is that you're in the
- 1:44Speaker 1: woods and that it's early November, because the rut is
- 1:47Speaker 1: going to be happening. As as some might say the
- 1:51Speaker 1: rut is fresh, it's a good run. I haven't been
- 1:56Speaker 1: sleeping very much late least, so my my wit and
- 1:58Speaker 1: my humor is probably off off right now. That's okay.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I think we were due to fit that in somewhere.
- 2:06Speaker 1: It hadn't happened. But yeah, man, so we've got rut
- 2:10Speaker 1: reports from four different people today, but you've got a
- 2:13Speaker 1: rut report yourself, right. Yeah. I came back to South
- 2:16Speaker 1: Dakota for a week of hunting, and I actually tagged
- 2:21Speaker 1: out on my third day. The deer movement was great
- 2:26Speaker 1: while I was here. If you were to break like
- 2:29Speaker 1: the rut down into the phases as we like to do,
- 2:32Speaker 1: it's not always, you know, as cute and in these
- 2:35Speaker 1: boxes as we think. But if you wanted to do that, um,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I would say, right now we're in like the chasing phase,
- 2:40Speaker 1: which is a really exciting time to be in the
- 2:43Speaker 1: woods because different than seeking that the deer aren't out
- 2:47Speaker 1: just like looking for doughs. They are harassing the doughs,
- 2:50Speaker 1: and that can move them all over a property and
- 2:53Speaker 1: so and it can move them all over property like
- 2:56Speaker 1: at any time of day two, I think we might
- 2:58Speaker 1: still be a few days away from like those big
- 3:01Speaker 1: mature bucks showing themselves at midday and and harassing doves.
- 3:06Speaker 1: But right now there's a ton of one and a half,
- 3:08Speaker 1: two and a half, three year and a half year
- 3:10Speaker 1: old bucks that are out harassing these doves. And it's
- 3:12Speaker 1: a really fun time to be in the woods. And
- 3:15Speaker 1: that's what was going on when I was out there
- 3:17Speaker 1: on November four. It's only about twenty minutes into shooting light.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I was hunting some doll betting. The devis had showed
- 3:24Speaker 1: up and they got nervous because this buck was around,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and he chased them off, and after they were gone,
- 3:30Speaker 1: I grunted him in and shot him at twelve yards
- 3:33Speaker 1: and and that was my South Dakota archer season is this, Uh,
- 3:38Speaker 1: did you have any trail cameras running on these properties?
- 3:41Speaker 1: Are you going completely blind this year? Nothing? I was
- 3:43Speaker 1: going to completely blind, um, which is sort of new.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I usually am running at least a dozen trail cameras
- 3:51Speaker 1: and actively scouting these properties, but with the move to Montana,
- 3:55Speaker 1: I decided I was just going to do everything blind
- 3:57Speaker 1: this year. UM. And I really regretted it when I
- 4:01Speaker 1: got back. I'd love to have that intel. But it
- 4:04Speaker 1: was also exciting just being out there and seeing all
- 4:07Speaker 1: these dear sort of for the first time. Yeah, did
- 4:10Speaker 1: you see any other nice bucks? Um? I I saw
- 4:14Speaker 1: maybe one and one other buck that would have been
- 4:18Speaker 1: a mature buck that I would have shot. But for
- 4:20Speaker 1: the most part, the action that I was seeing was
- 4:22Speaker 1: those one and a half two and a half three
- 4:24Speaker 1: and a half year old deer really outter asking those doughs.
- 4:27Speaker 1: But I think if I was in a tree right
- 4:29Speaker 1: now for these next couple of days, you would start
- 4:31Speaker 1: to see some of those more mature deer showing up
- 4:35Speaker 1: and probably dear that even if you did run trail cameras,
- 4:37Speaker 1: you may be weren't even familiar with because they're making
- 4:39Speaker 1: these longer extended walk abouts looking for dose. Yeah, tause
- 4:44Speaker 1: the season. Um, okay, well that is awesome. Congrats on
- 4:48Speaker 1: the buck um beautiful, dear, dude, beautiful in South Dakota, Dear,
- 4:52Speaker 1: I feel like this prairie deer I'll have that somewhat
- 4:55Speaker 1: unique coloration. I don't know if you've ever noticed that,
- 4:58Speaker 1: because that's where you grew up, but they just had this.
- 5:00Speaker 1: They blend in really well with that grass out there.
- 5:03Speaker 1: It seems like they're just a little bit lighter. Um,
- 5:06Speaker 1: and I think that's a pretty deer. Yeah, it's It's
- 5:09Speaker 1: a funny area to hunt, and I will certainly be
- 5:12Speaker 1: coming back every year no matter where I live. So
- 5:16Speaker 1: I've been at it in Michigan too. I can give
- 5:19Speaker 1: you an update. Um. The rut really start to pick
- 5:23Speaker 1: up around here on Halloween night. Halloween night is when
- 5:29Speaker 1: I saw my first real running activity. Um. I went
- 5:33Speaker 1: out there and it was actually nasty conditions. It was
- 5:36Speaker 1: twenty wind rain and then eventually snow, and in my head,
- 5:42Speaker 1: I was like, should I take the night off and
- 5:44Speaker 1: get some family time in or get some work done
- 5:46Speaker 1: because it's just so gnarly out there. Everything's probably gonna
- 5:49Speaker 1: bedded down, but I just was like, man, it's Halloween night.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I haven't missed a Halloween sitting forever. You gotta just
- 5:57Speaker 1: be out there. You never know what could happen. So
- 5:59Speaker 1: I went out sat a box blind. Actually just figure
- 6:02Speaker 1: I'll go somewhere where it's not gonna be a horrible
- 6:04Speaker 1: impact if the wind is crazy, but at least I
- 6:07Speaker 1: can see something, and ended up seeing a ton of
- 6:10Speaker 1: deer bucks were all over the place, and I saw
- 6:12Speaker 1: my target buck for the first time hunting, I saw Tran.
- 6:18Speaker 1: So Tran was back in the bedding area and the
- 6:20Speaker 1: neighbors like see him. He started running around and then
- 6:23Speaker 1: he actually ran all the way right to the edge
- 6:25Speaker 1: of the property I can hunt, and then spun right
- 6:28Speaker 1: the last minute, probably at sixty yards, and then a
- 6:30Speaker 1: dough it popped out and he spun and chased her
- 6:32Speaker 1: up and then ran way off from the distance. But
- 6:35Speaker 1: it's cool to have that first encounter. That was exciting.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And then the next day was November one, so I've
- 6:39Speaker 1: starting my all day sits um sat that day and
- 6:44Speaker 1: in the morning, I'm hunting down wind of the dough
- 6:46Speaker 1: betting are just like you were, And I have a
- 6:50Speaker 1: couple of young bucks come cruising through, and then I
- 6:53Speaker 1: spot a big set of legs off in the distance,
- 6:56Speaker 1: pull up my by nose, and right away I can
- 6:57Speaker 1: tell that's a that's a good buck. And then all
- 7:00Speaker 1: of a sudden realized, oh, that's that's this buck I've
- 7:03Speaker 1: been calling RB my buddy was a good man. That
- 7:05Speaker 1: bucks risky business because we didn't know if he was
- 7:07Speaker 1: three or four, so I was referring to his r B.
- 7:10Speaker 1: That's him, give mcgruant. And then he just turns and
- 7:14Speaker 1: starts walking right at me, and then stops, rips up
- 7:16Speaker 1: a tree and then comes right in. Now, this buck,
- 7:20Speaker 1: I can't remember. Have we talked about this buck? You
- 7:22Speaker 1: and you and I yet? Okay, So this is a
- 7:26Speaker 1: deer I saw all summer when I was out glass
- 7:28Speaker 1: and being fields in the properties. Really nice, dear. Um,
- 7:33Speaker 1: I kind of assumed that he was three. He's maybe
- 7:36Speaker 1: one thirties type ten point buck, which is a really
- 7:39Speaker 1: good buck for around here. Um. You know, I've only
- 7:42Speaker 1: had a handful of bucks like that on this farm ever. Um,
- 7:46Speaker 1: last year with that buck frank At killed, he was
- 7:48Speaker 1: an anomaly. We never have deer like that usually, you know,
- 7:52Speaker 1: class three year olds or the best we've gotten the farm. Well,
- 7:55Speaker 1: this year I had a hundred thirty class three year
- 7:58Speaker 1: old nine pointer and then a hundred and thirty somethings
- 8:01Speaker 1: ten pointer. This deer that I was thinking was three
- 8:03Speaker 1: as well. But I started looking at trail camera pictures
- 8:06Speaker 1: of him throughout the fall and I'm like, dang, maybe
- 8:10Speaker 1: he's older. Looking at the body, I was like, gosh,
- 8:12Speaker 1: some of these pictures, he looks like he's got a
- 8:13Speaker 1: tank of a body. So I just kept on going
- 8:16Speaker 1: back and forth, back and forth. I've been, you know,
- 8:20Speaker 1: thinking about trans so much. This this four year old
- 8:22Speaker 1: eight pointer that I passed last year that I really
- 8:25Speaker 1: thought this year was gonna be all about trains. So
- 8:27Speaker 1: I've been so focused and trying to dial in what
- 8:29Speaker 1: he's doing and trying to get in there after him,
- 8:31Speaker 1: and so I kind of get hung up on that
- 8:33Speaker 1: single buck thing, as you know. Um. But then i
- 8:36Speaker 1: started looking at pictures of this dear RB and I'm thinking, man,
- 8:40Speaker 1: if he's four, you know, four year old buck in Michigan,
- 8:42Speaker 1: that's something you can't pass on. Um. So I just
- 8:45Speaker 1: kept on going back and forth, back and forth, back
- 8:47Speaker 1: and forth. In my head every time I go out
- 8:49Speaker 1: to the tree, I look at a picture of him
- 8:50Speaker 1: and be like, what would I do if he showed up?
- 8:52Speaker 1: And then I kind of left it at I would
- 8:54Speaker 1: be a game time decision. If he shows up and
- 8:56Speaker 1: he just looks like an absolute tank and you get
- 8:58Speaker 1: pumped up, let it out a rip um. If not, don't. Well,
- 9:04Speaker 1: November one, here he comes and he comes in on string,
- 9:07Speaker 1: comes right in and steps into my shooting lane. I
- 9:10Speaker 1: draw back. He's at twenty yards and I'm still I
- 9:14Speaker 1: still like, I don't know, and so I didn't shoot.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I just couldn't bring myself to shoot in that moment
- 9:23Speaker 1: um because if I shoot that buck, then I'm not
- 9:25Speaker 1: gonna hunt tryin the rest of the year because I
- 9:27Speaker 1: had to save a tag for the back forty, So
- 9:30Speaker 1: it would have been the end of my hunting on
- 9:32Speaker 1: on this property that I like to spend a lot
- 9:34Speaker 1: of time on. And what was the date of that again,
- 9:37Speaker 1: the morning of November one, and he was just out
- 9:39Speaker 1: cruising and he came in right to that ground call
- 9:42Speaker 1: passed on him, and then as he walked away, I
- 9:44Speaker 1: got I got more time to look at him because
- 9:46Speaker 1: when he came in, he came in fast. He came
- 9:48Speaker 1: in through the brush. I knew it was him, but
- 9:50Speaker 1: I couldn't really look at him well. But as he
- 9:52Speaker 1: walked away, I could see him and I'm like, oh boy,
- 9:55Speaker 1: he looks really nice. I mean, he's a nice buck. Um,
- 9:59Speaker 1: one of the top you dear, probably as far as
- 10:02Speaker 1: antlers and body you know, that I've had on this
- 10:05Speaker 1: farm over the years. Um. But I passed on and
- 10:09Speaker 1: then at that point it's like, well, you're crazy, but
- 10:12Speaker 1: you sure as hell better get a shot train after
- 10:14Speaker 1: doing that. So one of the rest of the day
- 10:18Speaker 1: saw some more cruising, lots of like two year olds
- 10:20Speaker 1: up on their feet cruising around. UM year and a
- 10:23Speaker 1: half old as well, and I saw a decent three
- 10:27Speaker 1: year old that night. Again, I'll do the same thing
- 10:30Speaker 1: checking out doe betting ears. Um. The next morning, I
- 10:34Speaker 1: go back into the same general zone, but just bumped
- 10:39Speaker 1: one doe betting air over. There's kind of a series
- 10:41Speaker 1: of three doe betting areas on one side of this property. Uh,
- 10:45Speaker 1: one of them is on the neighbors, two of them
- 10:47Speaker 1: are on mine. And I can get kind of along
- 10:49Speaker 1: this line and then you'll get these bucks that go
- 10:51Speaker 1: from betting air to betting aar to betting air and
- 10:53Speaker 1: just follow the edge of it. And I'm on that edge.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Uh well, first light, I hear crashing around behind me,
- 11:00Speaker 1: and I turned around and I just see a profile
- 11:03Speaker 1: of a rack passing through the brush and I'm like bam,
- 11:07Speaker 1: like instantly could tell that was Tran And he was
- 11:10Speaker 1: right there. I don't know, thirty yards probably, but this
- 11:13Speaker 1: is before shooting light. This is as it's just light
- 11:16Speaker 1: enough that you can see stuff. But like I could,
- 11:19Speaker 1: I would never be able to get a shot. And
- 11:20Speaker 1: it was still too early. I saw him pass through.
- 11:23Speaker 1: He was in there, and you could just hear crunching
- 11:24Speaker 1: around and things snapping something, and maybe he's in there
- 11:27Speaker 1: with a dill the way it sounded like it was he.
- 11:29Speaker 1: He was in there for a long period time, but
- 11:31Speaker 1: he never popped out again. I couldn't see him, couldn't
- 11:33Speaker 1: coax him out, nothing. So then I wait, I wait,
- 11:37Speaker 1: I wait, I watch, And then a little two year
- 11:39Speaker 1: old eight pointer comes running out, And then I started
- 11:42Speaker 1: second guessing myself. Was this the buck that was into
- 11:45Speaker 1: the whole time? Did I somehow in my head just
- 11:48Speaker 1: get over excited and think it was Tran and instead
- 11:51Speaker 1: it was just this this two year old eight he
- 11:53Speaker 1: puts out and um, then a doe heads out and
- 11:56Speaker 1: there's no other buck behind her. So then that's what
- 11:58Speaker 1: I ended up thinking. Okay, that's that must be what happened. Um,
- 12:02Speaker 1: so I feel kind of like an idiot. I was
- 12:03Speaker 1: getting all fired up, and then the buck I thought
- 12:05Speaker 1: it was wasn't even in there. I'd also seen the
- 12:08Speaker 1: trespasser that morning, um, walking across one of my neighbors,
- 12:12Speaker 1: and so I was busy trying to get ahold of
- 12:14Speaker 1: the conservation officer and trying to get ahold of my neighbor.
- 12:16Speaker 1: And so I'm dealing with all that, and then I
- 12:18Speaker 1: turned around again and there's Tran. He's standing at like
- 12:22Speaker 1: sixty yards with a dough, so he had been in there, um,
- 12:25Speaker 1: but this is the other buck had passed through, so
- 12:27Speaker 1: trans out there sixty yards, he came out of the bedding.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Year he's with the dough, and long story short, he's
- 12:33Speaker 1: out of range, but he's on this dough and he
- 12:36Speaker 1: does these long circles around her, getting closer and then farther, closer,
- 12:40Speaker 1: and then farther, and then at one point he walked
- 12:42Speaker 1: way off like several hundred yards away, and I was like, okay,
- 12:45Speaker 1: it's done. The dough is way over there. And then
- 12:47Speaker 1: I looked to my right to see what's going on
- 12:49Speaker 1: if there's anything behind me, turned back and there's like
- 12:52Speaker 1: four or five doughs running right at me at like
- 12:54Speaker 1: twenty yards and trans right behind him. I'm like, holy crap,
- 12:58Speaker 1: it's gonna happen. I grabbed my bow. I'm thinking in
- 13:00Speaker 1: my head, is this real life? Um? He's tearing at me,
- 13:03Speaker 1: he's at sixties, at fifty five, he's at fifty. And
- 13:06Speaker 1: then he stops it, turns around, goes wack, walking back
- 13:10Speaker 1: towards the one solitary dell that he'd been with the
- 13:13Speaker 1: whole time. That was the story of November two. Tran
- 13:16Speaker 1: was was on that dough, UM, hot and heavy with her.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Couldn't get him to couldn't get him to give her up,
- 13:23Speaker 1: didn't get the shop, but it was exciting UM. And
- 13:27Speaker 1: then that was that was it. I tried to hunt
- 13:30Speaker 1: again that evening, hoping that she would cycle back through
- 13:33Speaker 1: her circle back through with him. I moved to stand
- 13:35Speaker 1: thirty yards closer to where they were at, hoping maybe
- 13:37Speaker 1: they'd follow that same entry point in the betting area,
- 13:40Speaker 1: but they did not, and the next day I had
- 13:43Speaker 1: to move to the back forty because we were starting
- 13:46Speaker 1: to film our rut hunts here in the back forty.
- 13:49Speaker 1: So I will try to be this along. I won't
- 13:52Speaker 1: give the full story because I'll probably do a big
- 13:54Speaker 1: recap of this um with Dan on a main episode
- 13:57Speaker 1: here soon. But the rut fresh report on the back
- 14:01Speaker 1: forty was that it was very very slow. I mean
- 14:03Speaker 1: we were seeing hardly anything, um hunting our best spots.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Finally going into the honey hole, which is this awesome
- 14:10Speaker 1: ridge transition slash bedding area that I thought would be
- 14:13Speaker 1: just bucks have to be passing through there. Um. Then
- 14:17Speaker 1: it moved to a pinch point along the edge of
- 14:18Speaker 1: the swamp. So good looking. But we're seeing three doughs
- 14:24Speaker 1: in a year and a half old in the morning,
- 14:26Speaker 1: two doys in a year and a half old in
- 14:27Speaker 1: the evening, a doll in a buck in the morning,
- 14:30Speaker 1: a dough and two year and a half hold in
- 14:32Speaker 1: the evening. I mean, just deathly slow days. Um, this
- 14:35Speaker 1: is getting pretty frustrating. But yesterday morning I heard a
- 14:39Speaker 1: buck bumping the doll around in the brush, but can
- 14:41Speaker 1: never see them. Kept on watching, kept on watching, kept
- 14:44Speaker 1: on watching. Then I turned to look over my back
- 14:47Speaker 1: and I see a big buck running across the field.
- 14:50Speaker 1: And it was this deer, that the one buck that
- 14:53Speaker 1: we've gotten the most pictures of that I saw once
- 14:56Speaker 1: because I bumped him. This buck I was kind of
- 14:58Speaker 1: referring to as the wide eight, the wide dates running
- 15:01Speaker 1: across the rage behind me. I bust out my grunt tube.
- 15:04Speaker 1: I fire off a large allowed grunt and he stops
- 15:07Speaker 1: on a dime, turns and looks, and then starts jogging
- 15:10Speaker 1: right at me. And long story short after going down
- 15:17Speaker 1: wind of me, came down wind, stopped, put his nose
- 15:21Speaker 1: in the air, sniff sniff, sniff, take a few steps
- 15:23Speaker 1: looking at me, sniff sniff sniff, keeps coming right in,
- 15:28Speaker 1: gets to twenty yards double along him, And that was
- 15:32Speaker 1: my rut on the back. Forty killed our first buck
- 15:35Speaker 1: off the back. Forty proved that a thorough sent control
- 15:38Speaker 1: process can pay off and had a hell of a day.
- 15:43Speaker 1: So it was nice to finally see some running action
- 15:45Speaker 1: out there, because up to that point it has been tough.
- 15:48Speaker 1: But I think that was a great reminder for me
- 15:50Speaker 1: and I had these every year. The rut can be
- 15:52Speaker 1: so hot and cold. Even though it might be a
- 15:54Speaker 1: day that's supposed to be great, if you're not in it,
- 15:57Speaker 1: it can be nothing. You won't see any ne dear
- 16:00Speaker 1: at all. You might see a few does. It could
- 16:02Speaker 1: just feel like the run has passed you by. But
- 16:04Speaker 1: then in a second, you know, in a moment, it
- 16:07Speaker 1: all change. So the rut for me is all about
- 16:09Speaker 1: trying to play that mental game, trying to stay positive
- 16:12Speaker 1: and focused, because when the moments come, they're quick and
- 16:15Speaker 1: you gotta be ready for it. Yeah, and I think
- 16:18Speaker 1: that there is a level of maturity that comes with
- 16:21Speaker 1: understanding that during the rout, because oftentimes your best rut
- 16:26Speaker 1: setups are going to be in some kind of tight
- 16:28Speaker 1: corridor where you don't have much for a line of vision.
- 16:32Speaker 1: And so you could go to a place like that
- 16:34Speaker 1: that's like the perfect funnel, but you can't see, you know,
- 16:37Speaker 1: beyond fifty yards, and so you could sit there all
- 16:40Speaker 1: day and not see any deer. But when you do,
- 16:42Speaker 1: it's those encounters that counts. And then there's a level
- 16:45Speaker 1: of maturity that comes with understanding that and accepting that,
- 16:49Speaker 1: you know, an observation stand might get you a sighting
- 16:52Speaker 1: of a dozen dear, but it doesn't really do you
- 16:55Speaker 1: any good if if they're not within bow range. Yeah,
- 16:58Speaker 1: it definitely is hard to do that unless you have
- 17:01Speaker 1: experience that tells you, hey, it's gonna be okay. These long,
- 17:05Speaker 1: slow sets are worth it if you know you're in
- 17:06Speaker 1: the right places. Um. Like you said, that does take
- 17:09Speaker 1: some some experience and some maturity to to know that
- 17:12Speaker 1: and accept that. Um. So it was nice to see
- 17:16Speaker 1: that come to fruition for me here recently, and glad
- 17:18Speaker 1: did for you too. Yeah, we'll congrat something awesome deer. Um.
- 17:21Speaker 1: And it sounds like we both agree that the rut
- 17:24Speaker 1: is here and maybe the best days are coming, like
- 17:28Speaker 1: this weekend or right around this weekend, if you need
- 17:32Speaker 1: any further motivation to to get out and hunt here
- 17:35Speaker 1: in these coming days. Last year, I did an article
- 17:38Speaker 1: for Meat Eater on the best day of the white
- 17:40Speaker 1: tail runte and I reach out to ten people that
- 17:43Speaker 1: I would consider to be white tail experts like Bill Winky,
- 17:46Speaker 1: Tony Peterson, Mark jur and I asked them what their
- 17:48Speaker 1: absolute favorite day of the rut is, and seventy percent
- 17:54Speaker 1: of them agreed on a day between November seven and
- 17:57Speaker 1: November ten. So this four day wind coming up here
- 18:00Speaker 1: in November seven, November ten. Many hunters who have a
- 18:04Speaker 1: ton of cloud agree is the best time to be
- 18:07Speaker 1: in the woods. Can't beat it, man, this is the
- 18:10Speaker 1: super Bowl. And uh I've got one more tag in
- 18:14Speaker 1: Michigan and a big eight pointer with with his name
- 18:18Speaker 1: on it. So hopefully we'll have some good news on
- 18:21Speaker 1: that front soon too. Yeah. Well, besides from us this week,
- 18:23Speaker 1: he was here from Mike Han Sucker and Missouri from
- 18:25Speaker 1: Hartland Bowl Hunter, and then we go to New Jersey
- 18:27Speaker 1: and talked to Pat Cutter from Red Hand Outdoor Company,
- 18:30Speaker 1: and then in Texas we talked to Tyler Jones from
- 18:32Speaker 1: the Element podcast and then we talked to Sam Sohold
- 18:35Speaker 1: from public Land Bus in South Dakota. Is that the
- 18:39Speaker 1: public Land van now what he still has? Both? It's not.
- 18:43Speaker 1: The public Land Bus isn't gone, it's just now he
- 18:46Speaker 1: is downsized and made his fleet a little more versatile. Nice.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Versatility is key. That's the key thing to think about
- 18:55Speaker 1: during the run as well. So well that said, I'm
- 18:58Speaker 1: I'm ready to wrap this up a few are and
- 19:00Speaker 1: get to those interviews. Alright, Happy Rutt, and we will
- 19:02Speaker 1: talk to you next week. Alright, and joining us on
- 19:06Speaker 1: the line next is Mike han Sucker from Heart Lampbow
- 19:09Speaker 1: Hunter in Missouri. Now, Mike in Missouri. What would you
- 19:12Speaker 1: say the buck activities been lately? On a scale of
- 19:14Speaker 1: one to ten, I would say probably a seven. Probably. Uh,
- 19:18Speaker 1: it seems like, you know, we're seeing a lot of cruising,
- 19:21Speaker 1: a lot of younger bucks cruising. Um, seeing some mature
- 19:24Speaker 1: deer on their feet, um, but not quite running hard yet.
- 19:28Speaker 1: So I think it's you know, they're they're seeking a lot,
- 19:31Speaker 1: they're they're hitting scrapes and and uh, you know, moving around.
- 19:35Speaker 1: But I don't think it's full born yet. What's your
- 19:38Speaker 1: strategy for trail cameras this time of year? Oh? Man,
- 19:43Speaker 1: you really should just throw them out. Throw the trail
- 19:45Speaker 1: camera strategy out the window. I feel like it's like, oh,
- 19:48Speaker 1: we get so hooked on, you know, trying to figure
- 19:50Speaker 1: out what a deer is doing and trying to figure
- 19:52Speaker 1: out what what area the deer is in, and um,
- 19:55Speaker 1: you know, they definitely can't help we. We'll run some
- 19:57Speaker 1: shellyo cameras and it is nice to know, u you know,
- 20:00Speaker 1: when the buck screws in the scrape, when he especially
- 20:03Speaker 1: in the coming weeks, you know, when he might be
- 20:05Speaker 1: in between does and he might be looking. It's good
- 20:07Speaker 1: to know then. Um, otherwise, man, they can really just
- 20:10Speaker 1: seems like they just drive you nuts this time a
- 20:12Speaker 1: year because you know, you check one and you're like, oh,
- 20:14Speaker 1: I should have been here and should have been there,
- 20:16Speaker 1: and when those deals this time of the year, you
- 20:17Speaker 1: just gotta get in the woods and hunt your spots
- 20:19Speaker 1: that the most productive and um, you know, you just
- 20:22Speaker 1: gotta hunt hard and hopefully luck fall in your favor.
- 20:25Speaker 1: You just mentioned scrapes. Are you still seeing some fresh
- 20:28Speaker 1: signmaking in Missouri? Yeah? Oh yeah, they're hitting the scrapes
- 20:31Speaker 1: really hard right now. It seems like, um, I've seen
- 20:33Speaker 1: a lot of buckscrews hitting scrapes. Actually a buck that
- 20:36Speaker 1: I was hunting this past week in Missouri, um was
- 20:40Speaker 1: actually frequenting this scrape but two days in a row,
- 20:42Speaker 1: middle of the day, like one thirty one day and
- 20:44Speaker 1: two o'clock the next day before it goes before the
- 20:46Speaker 1: time change. But basically you know, early early midday. So now,
- 20:52Speaker 1: for most hunters, using a decoy is kind of hail mary,
- 20:55Speaker 1: but it seems like you have a ton of success
- 20:58Speaker 1: doing it, so much so that you just decoyed in
- 21:00Speaker 1: two bucks today. Tell me about what your decoy strategies are. Yeah,
- 21:06Speaker 1: I absolutely loved using a decoy this time of year, um,
- 21:09Speaker 1: when the bucks are just on their feet just you know,
- 21:11Speaker 1: cruise and cruise and cruising. Um. You know, the decoys
- 21:15Speaker 1: are hit or miss. A lot of people don't have
- 21:16Speaker 1: success with them because you know, I use a buck
- 21:19Speaker 1: decoy exclusively. I don't really mess the dough decoy yet
- 21:22Speaker 1: or at all. I really haven't much us all released
- 21:25Speaker 1: so um, but those will get nervous with the buck
- 21:28Speaker 1: decoy and they'll come in and they'll stop and blow
- 21:30Speaker 1: and run off and they can mess up a hunt.
- 21:31Speaker 1: And so you know, a lot most of the time,
- 21:34Speaker 1: I'm not using them in super high beared into the
- 21:37Speaker 1: areas um where you know you're hoping to see much
- 21:40Speaker 1: of deer. A lot of times it's more of an
- 21:41Speaker 1: observation sitting spot where I can kind of sit back
- 21:44Speaker 1: look see movement maybe called the deer um. You know
- 21:49Speaker 1: there are there is an exception. I mean like actually
- 21:51Speaker 1: this morning, you know, I was hunting over a plot
- 21:53Speaker 1: with one um and I would never usually hunting more
- 21:56Speaker 1: you know, food plot in the morning. Um, or with
- 21:59Speaker 1: a deco. But this time of year, the does are
- 22:02Speaker 1: are being harassed so much in these fop plots, then
- 22:04Speaker 1: they're not really spending much time in there. So the
- 22:06Speaker 1: bucks are coming, they'll come pop up and check them,
- 22:08Speaker 1: but the doughs aren't, you know, spending a ton of
- 22:10Speaker 1: time in the food plots. So I just kind of
- 22:12Speaker 1: trying to risk it there. Do you do anything with
- 22:15Speaker 1: scents during the rout? You know, I don't, Actually, um,
- 22:19Speaker 1: I probably should. I just have never been a big
- 22:21Speaker 1: sin guy. Um, I just have never been you know,
- 22:26Speaker 1: big on introducing any other any sent outside of you know,
- 22:30Speaker 1: minimal minimal sense. So um, I probably should, though I
- 22:34Speaker 1: can see it being effective with the decoy I have
- 22:35Speaker 1: in the past actually saved you know, TARSI lands off
- 22:38Speaker 1: bucks and I put them on the decoy when using it, um,
- 22:41Speaker 1: because they always circled down when the decoy. That's the
- 22:44Speaker 1: hard part is getting is positioning the decoy to where
- 22:47Speaker 1: they can circle down when come in to the setup
- 22:49Speaker 1: without getting down when the view and offer you a shot.
- 22:51Speaker 1: And so um, I think, you know, having some sent
- 22:55Speaker 1: could definitely definitely help. Like the encounter I had the
- 22:59Speaker 1: night last night. Actually the buck circled down wint to
- 23:02Speaker 1: the decoy, and he circled wide down whin so he
- 23:05Speaker 1: kind of got to where he was on our you know,
- 23:07Speaker 1: almost down on the bus. And if we maybe had
- 23:09Speaker 1: that sin like he he wasn't like he didn't pick
- 23:12Speaker 1: us up big time and since freak, but he just
- 23:14Speaker 1: kind of like I have on the vill right, So
- 23:16Speaker 1: I think, you know, for maybe we had a little
- 23:19Speaker 1: bit of a bucks and on that deacoy may have
- 23:21Speaker 1: you know, convinced them otherwise. But so hard to say.
- 23:24Speaker 1: When you do make a shot using a decoy, how
- 23:28Speaker 1: does that often play out? Are you making the shot
- 23:30Speaker 1: as the buck approaches a decoy or is it right
- 23:34Speaker 1: after he gets up to the decoy? How how does
- 23:35Speaker 1: that usually go for you? It all depends. Um Ideally
- 23:39Speaker 1: you shoot him before they get to the decoy, because
- 23:41Speaker 1: most of the time they either get you know, two
- 23:45Speaker 1: or three feet and just charge it and then they
- 23:48Speaker 1: freak out because the deco goes flying and it's hard plastic,
- 23:51Speaker 1: or sometimes they'll come up to it slowly if they're
- 23:53Speaker 1: not really aggressive and confident, they'll come up to a
- 23:55Speaker 1: slowly and they'll smell it and they'll stick their nose
- 23:57Speaker 1: up to it, and I don't know if it's the
- 23:59Speaker 1: fact it doesn't have any sent or if it's that
- 24:01Speaker 1: it's like a hard plastic that they just they just
- 24:04Speaker 1: know it's not right. And a lot of times they'll
- 24:06Speaker 1: they'll bust out and you won't get a shot. And
- 24:08Speaker 1: so I always try to get a shot prior, um,
- 24:11Speaker 1: you know, because then getting too close. But it can
- 24:13Speaker 1: be tough. I mean, the buck I killed a couple
- 24:16Speaker 1: of years ago, and I I tried to stop, and
- 24:18Speaker 1: they usually are so so into it that they don't
- 24:21Speaker 1: really hear anything, and so getting in the stop can
- 24:24Speaker 1: be really tough going forward. Then, in this next week
- 24:27Speaker 1: or so, what do you think that bucket activity is
- 24:29Speaker 1: going to be on the scale of one to ten
- 24:30Speaker 1: in Missouri? I would say it's gonna be a nine
- 24:34Speaker 1: or ten. I gotta think, you know, these next few days, especially, um,
- 24:38Speaker 1: I think that they're gonna start really really running hard.
- 24:41Speaker 1: We got some good weather coming. Actually the weather has
- 24:43Speaker 1: been great for the past week, and uh really can't
- 24:47Speaker 1: complain about the weather at all. So I think these
- 24:49Speaker 1: next these next you know, three, four or five days
- 24:54Speaker 1: could be pretty special. Alright, Mike, I hope the decoy
- 24:57Speaker 1: success continues. Good luck and thanks for joining me. All right,
- 25:00Speaker 1: thanks man, all right in joining us online. Next is
- 25:03Speaker 1: Pat Cutter from Red Hand Outdoor Company in New Jersey. Now,
- 25:07Speaker 1: Pat in New Jersey. What would you say the bucket
- 25:09Speaker 1: activities been lately? On a scale of one to ten?
- 25:13Speaker 1: He was up Spencer, Um, I'd say right now today, Uh,
- 25:17Speaker 1: it's probably about a seven or eight. Um, I think
- 25:21Speaker 1: it's really starting to pick up now. I had I
- 25:24Speaker 1: had hunt it yesterday morning and uh, I passed up
- 25:27Speaker 1: a good three year old yesterday. And also yesterday afternoon
- 25:32Speaker 1: I had a buck dogging doll all behind me and
- 25:35Speaker 1: the thick stuff. Um, I could never get a crack
- 25:38Speaker 1: at that one. Um. But this morning again I went out.
- 25:41Speaker 1: I went out this morning and had another buck chasing
- 25:44Speaker 1: the doll all over the place, just just out of range. Um.
- 25:49Speaker 1: You know, I think it's I think it's really turning
- 25:51Speaker 1: on right now. Are you seeing any midday movement in
- 25:54Speaker 1: and if not, how far away do you think we
- 25:56Speaker 1: are from some of that midday action? Um. There. I
- 25:59Speaker 1: did check some cameras midday to day and I have
- 26:02Speaker 1: been seen some midday cruisers. Um. Nothing nothing over the
- 26:07Speaker 1: age of really four and a half, some like two
- 26:09Speaker 1: and three year old cruisers. But I think, you know,
- 26:12Speaker 1: if you got the time now, I think now is
- 26:14Speaker 1: the time to to to sit all day and just
- 26:16Speaker 1: put all your cards in. Are you seeing any signmaking
- 26:19Speaker 1: still in New Jersey? And how do you factor that
- 26:22Speaker 1: into your decision making? Um? Not as much. I mean
- 26:26Speaker 1: scrapes have have kind of trickled out a little bit. UM.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I think now they're just they're just looking for the
- 26:33Speaker 1: for the for the dose. UM. I would get you know,
- 26:36Speaker 1: you know in those typical funnels, or or get you
- 26:39Speaker 1: know downwind of known Gough betting areas and and just
- 26:43Speaker 1: post up shop there and you know it's this time
- 26:46Speaker 1: of year. It's all. It's all a lucky thing. Really,
- 26:49Speaker 1: He's got to be at the right place at the
- 26:50Speaker 1: right time and put your time in a lot of
- 26:53Speaker 1: the country for this rut is dealing with standing crops?
- 26:56Speaker 1: Is that something you're dealing with the New Jersey. I
- 26:59Speaker 1: have seen standing crops. Um. I did lose the one
- 27:02Speaker 1: lease that I'm on, um, so I'm not really hunting
- 27:05Speaker 1: any egg properties right now, but I have seen it.
- 27:09Speaker 1: I have seen crops still standing, so I'm sure it's
- 27:12Speaker 1: somewhat of an issue for for some guys. But I'm all,
- 27:16Speaker 1: I'm hunting all big woods right now, so obviously it's
- 27:18Speaker 1: not for me. When you are hunting those big woods.
- 27:21Speaker 1: What food sources are you focused on right now? I'm
- 27:24Speaker 1: up by us in the mountains, up by us a
- 27:27Speaker 1: lot of red oaks this year. Um, the whites really
- 27:30Speaker 1: didn't produce this year, but but the ground is littered
- 27:32Speaker 1: with red oaks. And you know, I got some of
- 27:34Speaker 1: my cameras on video video mode and you could just
- 27:37Speaker 1: see them just munching, you know, the cruise by the camera,
- 27:40Speaker 1: they hit a scrape and they'll grab a couple of
- 27:42Speaker 1: acorns and just keep moving. So they're all over the
- 27:45Speaker 1: place this year. When you're hunting the big woods in
- 27:47Speaker 1: New Jersey on public land, I assume that you're forced
- 27:50Speaker 1: to do some scouting as you go. What's your strategy
- 27:53Speaker 1: for scouting this time year when you plan on hunting
- 27:55Speaker 1: right away. I'm trying to find something that's going to
- 27:59Speaker 1: change the deer, whether you know, I got some spots
- 28:02Speaker 1: um where there's some there's some swamps, swamps up on
- 28:06Speaker 1: top of a ridge, and I'm trying to, you know,
- 28:09Speaker 1: find spots that will pinch the deer through a spot
- 28:12Speaker 1: you know within you know, anywhere from thirty to fifty
- 28:16Speaker 1: yards where I can get a shot at him. Um,
- 28:18Speaker 1: something like that. Um. You know, this morning I hunted
- 28:21Speaker 1: on top of a big mountain world ridge and um,
- 28:25Speaker 1: right right at the point, like the the thick laurels
- 28:29Speaker 1: kind of open up a little bit, so they so
- 28:30Speaker 1: they run that edge. UM. So that's something pretty much
- 28:34Speaker 1: for what I'm looking for. Um. But you know, it
- 28:37Speaker 1: all depends. Like this morning, I set up on that
- 28:40Speaker 1: edge and the deer were in the thick stuff and
- 28:42Speaker 1: they ended up cutting down to the bottom and I
- 28:44Speaker 1: never I never saw him again. But do you do
- 28:46Speaker 1: any calling when you're hunting public land in New Jersey?
- 28:50Speaker 1: I do? I mean these bucks they don't see too
- 28:54Speaker 1: many humans or hunters. If you're getting back to certain spots, Um,
- 28:58Speaker 1: they're they're not hearing much of that. I do. I
- 29:00Speaker 1: did call it the buck yesterday, and I did call
- 29:03Speaker 1: it the buck this morning, but they were they were
- 29:05Speaker 1: so focused on the on that dough that it didn't
- 29:08Speaker 1: make any difference and they just wanted to leave in her.
- 29:10Speaker 1: So going forward, then in the next week or so,
- 29:13Speaker 1: what do you think that buck activity is going to
- 29:14Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in New Jersey?
- 29:18Speaker 1: I think it's gonna stay pretty steady, um, around seven,
- 29:22Speaker 1: eight to nine even. I mean, our our temperatures are right,
- 29:26Speaker 1: we're coming into a good, a good moon phase. Um,
- 29:29Speaker 1: as long as they're not getting locked down. UM, I
- 29:32Speaker 1: think it's gonna be good the next the next week
- 29:34Speaker 1: or so. Alr, pat, good luck the rest of the fall.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me. Thank you, Spencer, alright and joining
- 29:41Speaker 1: us on the line. Next is Tyler Jones from the
- 29:43Speaker 1: Element podcast in Texas. Now, Tyler in Texas, what would
- 29:46Speaker 1: you say the buck activities been lately on a scale
- 29:48Speaker 1: of one to ten um, it's probably around the six
- 29:53Speaker 1: man um, I would say, I mean there's been a
- 29:55Speaker 1: good buck activity activity. I guess if you want to
- 29:58Speaker 1: look at screens and um, we've seen a tiny young
- 30:02Speaker 1: bucks side. I mean, I think we've got footage of
- 30:04Speaker 1: bucks fiding on the seventh of October, which is early
- 30:08Speaker 1: for us. I mean it's it's usually going to be
- 30:10Speaker 1: in the nineties far as temperature goes that time of year.
- 30:13Speaker 1: And um, so I mean we've had a good, very
- 30:17Speaker 1: cool October after having the hattest September on record, and
- 30:21Speaker 1: I think it really kicked um the bucks into kind
- 30:25Speaker 1: of overdrive. But I don't think it's necessarily done anything
- 30:27Speaker 1: for the dose. So as far as like stages of
- 30:30Speaker 1: the room, we're still not quite there. I don't think. So.
- 30:33Speaker 1: When you hear the report out of someplace like Indiana
- 30:36Speaker 1: or Kansas, for example, how relatable is that for you
- 30:39Speaker 1: guys in Texas, Uh, we don't typically pay a whole
- 30:44Speaker 1: lot of attention to it. Um. I mean, and there's
- 30:46Speaker 1: so many different ecoregions in Texas where you know, we've
- 30:50Speaker 1: uh we've got a coastal region, We've got the Panhama region,
- 30:53Speaker 1: you know, mountains, uh, piney woods, all these different regions,
- 30:57Speaker 1: so there's different uh windows. I mean, we have year
- 31:00Speaker 1: that rut in August and in the brush country South Texas,
- 31:03Speaker 1: then they run in mid December. So um, it's it's definitely,
- 31:08Speaker 1: you know, very specific to the region. But overall we
- 31:11Speaker 1: don't pay attention to a lot of that. I mean,
- 31:13Speaker 1: I gotta report from a buddy yesterday and he said
- 31:16Speaker 1: he's all bucks chasing at mid Dundy in Ottawa and
- 31:21Speaker 1: and essentially saying get up here, which I can't right now,
- 31:24Speaker 1: you know, but uh, it's it doesn't mean a whole
- 31:28Speaker 1: lot to us because ums in Texas and UM a
- 31:32Speaker 1: different part of the state than I live in, and
- 31:35Speaker 1: it's um, you know, it's it's still deer checking scrapes
- 31:39Speaker 1: and kind of light cruise in real early in the morning.
- 31:41Speaker 1: But there's nothing like morning at all. Are you seeing
- 31:44Speaker 1: much for signmaking right now? Then? Yeah, there's uh, there's
- 31:47Speaker 1: there's a pretty good, um, you know, number of scrapes. UM,
- 31:52Speaker 1: haven't seen a ton of road humor. I just um,
- 31:55Speaker 1: I think in the last week or so, temps have
- 31:58Speaker 1: been pretty moderate. I know at home they've been in
- 32:01Speaker 1: the um load of mid seventies. UM where I'm at
- 32:06Speaker 1: right now, we're still getting pushing into the mid sixties,
- 32:09Speaker 1: even though it's kind of cold in the mornings and
- 32:11Speaker 1: at night. UM, So you know, it's I just don't
- 32:15Speaker 1: know that they're all swollen up and read to you know,
- 32:18Speaker 1: push trees around two much I'm seeing if you're here
- 32:20Speaker 1: in there, but mostly still scraps. And actually a guy
- 32:23Speaker 1: on this hunt this morning shot a real nice eight
- 32:26Speaker 1: point on a great um this morning. So it's definitely
- 32:29Speaker 1: an effective thing for us. Here. If you're not seeing
- 32:32Speaker 1: much for rutting activity, that I imagine a lot of
- 32:34Speaker 1: your focus has been on food. What food sources should
- 32:37Speaker 1: hunters be looking for right now? In Texas? You know
- 32:41Speaker 1: oaks were back home where I'm at, oaks are predominant
- 32:44Speaker 1: food source. UM had another buddy shoot public Landier in
- 32:49Speaker 1: late October and he said there wasn't a thing in
- 32:52Speaker 1: his stomach to step for anythings. And UM, so I mean, well,
- 32:56Speaker 1: what we'll do is usually start out in mid October
- 33:00Speaker 1: in October hunting shumart oaks back home, UM, which are
- 33:04Speaker 1: a red oak with a big acron and UM, by
- 33:07Speaker 1: this point those are starting to stay and we've had
- 33:10Speaker 1: a lot of the swamp oaks, the willow oaks. UM.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Those kind of oaks are have dropped these really bright
- 33:17Speaker 1: orange acrons on on the inside their bright orange. So
- 33:20Speaker 1: they've got a lot o pins and know, but they
- 33:22Speaker 1: start to break down this month and especially in the December,
- 33:26Speaker 1: those will become a pretty good food source. UM. Per
- 33:28Speaker 1: Simmons also something that is UM. Depending on where you're
- 33:33Speaker 1: at and how much wins you had, you've had, UM,
- 33:36Speaker 1: they're probably about right right now. UM. They may be
- 33:39Speaker 1: on the back end of that a little bit. UM.
- 33:42Speaker 1: So those are kind of the natural food sources that
- 33:45Speaker 1: uh we focus on this time of the year. In
- 33:47Speaker 1: the state like Texas where you have limited public land
- 33:50Speaker 1: and a lot of hunters. What is your strategy for
- 33:53Speaker 1: hunting public land during pre rock Um, it's really just
- 33:58Speaker 1: about UM, you know, the more I look at, I
- 34:02Speaker 1: bounced around a lot, UM, and I think that it's
- 34:05Speaker 1: more about we run some trail cameras, we can can
- 34:11Speaker 1: usually see deer. Uh. If you see there in August,
- 34:15Speaker 1: you usually you know, and even September early September, you
- 34:18Speaker 1: usually you don't see those deer again in my experience, UM,
- 34:21Speaker 1: throughout the season hardly at all. But from that like
- 34:24Speaker 1: back half of September on indo October, if you can
- 34:27Speaker 1: use some pretty recent trail camera information, UM, then this
- 34:32Speaker 1: sitting there SoCal nights in a row on good winds
- 34:35Speaker 1: underneath oak trease that d m AB feeding on is
- 34:38Speaker 1: really a dead tactic. And it it doesn't really um,
- 34:42Speaker 1: like you were saying, there's there's limited public land in Texas,
- 34:45Speaker 1: so it doesn't really matter if you can see a
- 34:47Speaker 1: place on the map that looks good and it's it's
- 34:50Speaker 1: a mile and a half end, there's probably gonna be
- 34:51Speaker 1: a stand there. So, um, it doesn't matter how far
- 34:54Speaker 1: you're going in really it's really just about getting boots
- 34:57Speaker 1: on the ground, um, even this time of year, and
- 35:00Speaker 1: uh finding fresh time and then just finding it going forward.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Then in the next week or so, what do you
- 35:06Speaker 1: think that bucket activity is going to be a skill
- 35:08Speaker 1: of one to tend in Texas? Um? I think, um
- 35:13Speaker 1: across a lot of a lot of maybe the western
- 35:16Speaker 1: half of Texas, we're really gonna see the deer. When
- 35:19Speaker 1: I say western half, probably the Interstate thirty five which
- 35:22Speaker 1: goes through Dallas forth, Um Winster there, UM probably gonna
- 35:26Speaker 1: see a lot of um, the white tails are gonna
- 35:30Speaker 1: be really ramping up into the right um as we
- 35:33Speaker 1: go into the next week or so. Um East, I
- 35:36Speaker 1: think you know back where a hunt where I'm where
- 35:39Speaker 1: we're from, in our homes are at our home there's
- 35:42Speaker 1: it's gonna be probably more towards the middle of the
- 35:45Speaker 1: month when we see uh things really start to you know,
- 35:48Speaker 1: kind of get to that chaotic level a little bit.
- 35:51Speaker 1: So still got you know, a couple of weeks before
- 35:53Speaker 1: we get there. Um, But yeah, so Western Western have
- 35:56Speaker 1: to say, I think it's gonna it's gonna be really good.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I think we've got co Front coming in later this week,
- 36:02Speaker 1: so that should really just uh you know the scales. Alright, Tyler,
- 36:07Speaker 1: good luck to you and Casey from the Element podcast,
- 36:10Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me. Thanks Spencer, alright enjoying us online.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Next is Sam Soholt from the public Land Bus in
- 36:18Speaker 1: South Dakota. Now, Sam in South Dakota, what would you
- 36:20Speaker 1: say the buck activities man lately on a scale of
- 36:23Speaker 1: one to ten? You know, this first part of November,
- 36:26Speaker 1: I would say it's right somewhere between five and six. Um,
- 36:30Speaker 1: it hasn't been there hasn't been like all out chasing. Um,
- 36:34Speaker 1: there has been some falling ducks that are cruising after those,
- 36:37Speaker 1: and uh a couple of more mature gear chasing. But
- 36:41Speaker 1: it's not like it's not on the fire yet. Now.
- 36:44Speaker 1: That seems low for this time of year. Is that
- 36:46Speaker 1: historically the kind of number that you would give, or
- 36:49Speaker 1: is there something this year that's making that buck move
- 36:51Speaker 1: maybe a little bit worse for bow hunters, you know,
- 36:54Speaker 1: typically this early in November. Uh, here it's it's kind
- 36:59Speaker 1: of really just starting to kick off. And this year
- 37:01Speaker 1: I think what changed kind of what's been keeping it
- 37:03Speaker 1: lower is the fact that basically the entire eastern half
- 37:07Speaker 1: of South Dakota still has standing crop because of all
- 37:09Speaker 1: the water um back in this region. But yeah, I
- 37:12Speaker 1: think a lot of the deer are if they are
- 37:14Speaker 1: running hard, they possibly just doing in the middle of
- 37:17Speaker 1: cornfield instead of going through transitions or thickets or uh
- 37:22Speaker 1: timber stands. All that water that we've had in the
- 37:25Speaker 1: great planes. Has that change anything else for you besides
- 37:28Speaker 1: the delayed harvests? You know, for me personally, it definitely
- 37:32Speaker 1: changed some access points, some places that had to work
- 37:36Speaker 1: around to get into still, and I think it has
- 37:39Speaker 1: changed deer movement. Um One area that has historically seen
- 37:43Speaker 1: a few deer and the majority of the deer would
- 37:46Speaker 1: bed in a cattail slew nearby, it is absolutely full
- 37:50Speaker 1: of deer this year, simply because they are displaced by
- 37:53Speaker 1: the water. UM So, I think it's definitely changed how
- 37:56Speaker 1: deer are using the terrain. But it's also an opportunity
- 37:59Speaker 1: to find uh some funnels and pinch point because of
- 38:02Speaker 1: that water this year that probably didn't exist for the
- 38:05Speaker 1: past decade. If you're not seeing any of that midday
- 38:08Speaker 1: movement quite yet. When do you expect for South Dakota's
- 38:11Speaker 1: to see that kind of action. I would say in
- 38:14Speaker 1: the next day or two. It should kick off. Stuff
- 38:16Speaker 1: should be moving all day. We've got a lot of
- 38:18Speaker 1: We've got a huge cold weather system coming over the
- 38:21Speaker 1: next week, and I would imagine that the cold weather
- 38:24Speaker 1: and just it being that time of the month will
- 38:27Speaker 1: keep deer on their feet all day. Now, you just
- 38:29Speaker 1: killed a great buck there in eastern South Dakota on
- 38:32Speaker 1: public land. Tell us about that set up, and tell
- 38:34Speaker 1: us about what you're looking for when you pick some
- 38:36Speaker 1: of these places to bowhunts on public land. So I
- 38:40Speaker 1: typically try to get to places that a lot of
- 38:43Speaker 1: other people might not go or might overlook. Um. So
- 38:46Speaker 1: the setup I had was honestly just a real small
- 38:49Speaker 1: island of trees kind of in the middle of nowhere,
- 38:52Speaker 1: and it's uh, it's spot I have seen deer in
- 38:55Speaker 1: the past moving through, but it's never had a chance
- 38:58Speaker 1: to get in there and hunt. Um. But it was
- 39:01Speaker 1: it's thick enough kind of on the perimeter that I
- 39:03Speaker 1: knew it would be out of the wind. I was
- 39:04Speaker 1: hunting a windy day and happened to get in the
- 39:07Speaker 1: right tree at the right time and had had a
- 39:09Speaker 1: really good My buck was actually chasing um was pursuing
- 39:12Speaker 1: a dough through the the through the little thicket, and
- 39:16Speaker 1: she carried him right past me, so twenty five yards
- 39:20Speaker 1: and he did not go very far after that. In
- 39:23Speaker 1: the past, I know on public land you've killed some
- 39:25Speaker 1: deer this time of year using decoys. How do you
- 39:28Speaker 1: decide when you use a set up like that? So
- 39:32Speaker 1: typically for me, like I'm a fairly aggressive hunter when
- 39:35Speaker 1: it comes to this time of year, I figured, I
- 39:37Speaker 1: pretty I'll hunt a different spot every hunt, and if
- 39:40Speaker 1: I if I'm going to a spot that I know
- 39:42Speaker 1: is highly visible, a lot of times I'll bring a
- 39:45Speaker 1: decoy this time of year just to give me an
- 39:48Speaker 1: extra advantage where if I do see a buck cruising
- 39:51Speaker 1: at a distance, I can grown at him or rattle
- 39:54Speaker 1: at him to get his attention and then when he
- 39:55Speaker 1: looks over, he'll see the decoy and come check it out. Um.
- 40:00Speaker 1: So I don't think any time in the month of
- 40:02Speaker 1: November is a good time to use a decoy. If
- 40:04Speaker 1: you're in a place that's highly visible going forward, then
- 40:07Speaker 1: in this next week or so, what do you think
- 40:08Speaker 1: that bucket Kivy is going to be on a scale
- 40:10Speaker 1: of one to ten in South Dakota. You know, I
- 40:13Speaker 1: would say in the next two or three days that
- 40:16Speaker 1: should ramp right up to an eight or nine, um
- 40:19Speaker 1: and then be get kind of hold right there, if
- 40:21Speaker 1: not bump all the way to ten over the next week.
- 40:25Speaker 1: All right, Samuel, congrats on the awesome dear thanks for
- 40:27Speaker 1: joining me. Yeah, thank you, And that concludes this week's
- 40:31Speaker 1: episode of rut Fresh Radio. Thanks to Mike, pat Tyler
- 40:35Speaker 1: and Sam for joining me, and thank you guys for listening.
