Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time here on the Gill Connections podcast.
- 0:03In an effort to increase communication, empathy and
- 0:06understanding around the country, we're going to be
- 0:08running a new episode every day interviewing a coach, a high
- 0:12school coach from every state, and yes, even you, Washington,
- 0:16DC with explaining how the state qualifying system works in their
- 0:21state. We'll be talking with a local
- 0:23state expert on how many classes, private versus public
- 0:27schools, what events and what is the process?
- 0:30Is it areas, districts, regionals, state meet?
- 0:34Is it a descending order list? Are there fun things that you do
- 0:38a little differently? Like maybe you, I don't know,
- 0:41maybe you do double points for relays looking at you Texas.
- 0:45And then we're also going to get to the bottom of is it the state
- 0:48meet or do you qualify for states?
- 0:50So check us out every day here at April and May of 2024 as we
- 0:54run through each state with a local state expert.
- 0:57So let's get started right now. All right, here we go.
- 1:10We are continuing our state series here.
- 1:13Hopefully you are following along.
- 1:14We started back in April with Alabama.
- 1:17We're going alphabetical all the way to Wyoming 51 outdoor state
- 1:21championships. We're even including UDC.
- 1:24So we've got you in there coming up here soon as well.
- 1:26So today we're going to learn about the great state of
- 1:29Tennessee. So help me welcome from Franklin
- 1:31Rd. Academy.
- 1:32Mr. Drew Matthews. Drew, how are you Sir?
- 1:34Hey, Mike. Thanks for having me.
- 1:36Oh, man. You know, the The thing is for
- 1:38me to you, you know, to do this type of, you know, 51 interviews
- 1:42every day for two months. It doesn't happen without
- 1:45servant leaders like yourself stepping up and representing the
- 1:48whole state. No pressure.
- 1:49So thank you for being here. And you are one of the very
- 1:52first quick ones to to volunteer.
- 1:55So I'm very grateful for you. And thank you for being here.
- 1:57OK. Yeah.
- 1:58I appreciate it. Why don't we start with an
- 2:01introduction? Why don't we get to know you a
- 2:02little bit better? Give yourself some St. cred?
- 2:05Why should a coach from Alaska listen to Drew from Tennessee?
- 2:09Tell us a little bit about Give us a 32nd version of your
- 2:12experience there as a Tennessee high school coach.
- 2:14Yeah, so I've been a a coach at Franklin Rd.
- 2:17Academy here in Nashville, TN for the past four years.
- 2:20Heading into my my fifth season now, I just started coaching
- 2:23cross country as well, so I just finished up my first season in
- 2:26cross country. So shout out to all the the
- 2:28cross country folks out there and over these past four years
- 2:32I've specialized in sprints and relays.
- 2:34So that's kind of been my speciality.
- 2:36But over the course of my running career and coaching
- 2:39career, I've been involved in a lot of different events.
- 2:41So just have a whole love for all of track and field.
- 2:44I think that's the definition of high school track coach, right?
- 2:47Like all events, most events, some years it's distance and
- 2:51other years it's throws. So yeah, that makes a lot of
- 2:54sense. A lot of appreciation and
- 2:56empathy for our high school coaches out there.
- 2:57Love you guys and gals to death. All right, Drew, let's get into
- 3:01Tennessee. Some States and we're learning
- 3:03not many, but some states have a separate private school
- 3:08association. They go on to their own state,
- 3:10meet different qualifying system, etcetera.
- 3:13And then a separate one for public schools.
- 3:15They go over here, they go towards their own state
- 3:17championship series and most commonly though both private and
- 3:21public are going at it for the same state team opportunities.
- 3:25What are we doing in Tennessee Public and private schools?
- 3:28Yeah, in Tennessee we we do have it separated.
- 3:30So we have three classes, Division 1-2 and three.
- 3:36Franklin Rd. is in is a private school in Division 2A.
- 3:40So there are sub classifications below that, and the public
- 3:46schools do have a separate separate state championship, but
- 3:49both private and public school systems are.
- 3:52Governed by the same body, so they're put on by the same state
- 3:56state body. So each state championship is
- 3:58the same, just divided by private and public.
- 4:00So private, So same rule set, but private schools have their
- 4:06route and public schools have their route and never shall the
- 4:09two mix. No, no.
- 4:11Not during qualifications. Perfect.
- 4:13OK. So the next question is how many
- 4:16classes you started getting into that there, I think on the
- 4:18private school. So in private school we have
- 4:21D1D2D3, yes, but you mentioned 2A.
- 4:27Yes. So within those 3
- 4:28classifications, there are some sub classifications and those
- 4:31are for the the private school versus public school.
- 4:34So Class A or division two Class A that would be private.
- 4:39If it was Class B that would be public.
- 4:42OK, so all of Tennessee is D1D2D3 correct?
- 4:47And then so in the D2 where Franklin Rd. lives, Division 2A
- 4:52is your private schools. Division two BS, are your public
- 4:55schools correct? Can I assume then that therefore
- 4:58there's a 1A and 1B and therefore 3A3B?
- 5:02Yes, correct. Perfect.
- 5:03OK, All right. I thought you were going to get
- 5:05real complicated there, but so far we're OK.
- 5:08There's no CS, correct. It's just because it's just
- 5:11private and public is what A&B. Yes, No CS.
- 5:13All right, perfect. OK.
- 5:15So and you, you help us navigate this next question because of
- 5:19the private and public split here, how do we qualify?
- 5:23We've got 3, yeah, we got three boys state championships on the
- 5:27private side, 3 girls on the private side, so team titles and
- 5:31the public. We have the same three boys and
- 5:32three girls team titles. So are they different in how
- 5:37we're going to go to those state meets or are those the same as
- 5:40well? Talk us through, yeah.
- 5:41Actually they they are different.
- 5:43So for for private schools, for example, the classification
- 5:46we're in, we'll have three regional meets.
- 5:49So they'll be a regional meet. In East Tennessee, Middle
- 5:53Tennessee and West Tennessee. So think you're Memphis,
- 5:56Nashville and Knoxville if you like to think of it that way.
- 6:00And out of those two regional meets we take the two top marks
- 6:04or times, OK don't go there just yet on me, let's let's go
- 6:07through the whole is it regional and we're we're staying private
- 6:10school track here right now. So regional, what's the next
- 6:13round called? The state meet.
- 6:15OK, perfect. Now, so before we get to how we
- 6:17qualify for state, talk to me about how do I enter regionals?
- 6:21And what I mean by that is do I get 3 per event?
- 6:24Is there a qualifying time or distance standard?
- 6:27How do I get my kids into the regional meet?
- 6:29Yeah, for almost all events outside of the pole vault, there
- 6:32is no standard mark or time that you have to hit.
- 6:35There is one for the pole vault, I think, just for safety reasons
- 6:40and. I'm sorry, what was your initial
- 6:43question? So there's no qualifying
- 6:45standard etcetera to get into regional.
- 6:47So does that mean if I have a a whole group of stud sprinters,
- 6:51if I have 5 I want to enter into the hundred I can enter 5?
- 6:55No, there is a maximum. So yeah, there is a maximum of
- 6:58three. OK, perfect.
- 6:59So three per event. All right, so I get 3 per event
- 7:03to go to the regional meet. Now I'm at the regional meet.
- 7:08I I have the goal. I want to make it to the next
- 7:10week to the state meet. What do I got to do?
- 7:13You have to place either top two in your region, so either win
- 7:16your event or finish second in your region.
- 7:19So the top two from each region will be taken to state.
- 7:22Beyond that there are two at large bids, so the next two best
- 7:28marks or times from any of the regions.
- 7:31So they could be both from the middle region, they could be
- 7:35from the middle and West region. Really any.
- 7:37Any region can can. Fill those two at large bids, so
- 7:41top two in the event I punch my ticket, I'm going to the state
- 7:44meet and then they take all the rest of the results from all
- 7:47three, put them in together kind of a descending order list and
- 7:50the top two in that descending order list also make it to the
- 7:53state meet. So I'm taking 8 athletes.
- 7:55So we're we're kind of seeing what the state meet is.
- 7:57We're finals, only state meet. Yes, correct.
- 8:01Does that eight also carry over for relays and field events?
- 8:04So 8 pole vaulters, 8 shot putters, 8.
- 8:06Four by one teams. Correct.
- 8:08Got it. Perfect.
- 8:09All right, So I get to the state meet.
- 8:13OK, I think we're good there. Let's go ahead and do the venue
- 8:16actually. And then we'll come back to
- 8:17public and go that same question set.
- 8:19Does that sound OK? Sure.
- 8:21OK. So talk to us about the state
- 8:24venue for the private schools. We've got three boys team state
- 8:29championships and three girls. Are we doing all six meets at
- 8:31the same venue, same week? Do we split it up?
- 8:34Does that venue rotate year to year?
- 8:35Tell us about the state meet. Yeah, so the venue is the same
- 8:39for both public and private. It's at Middle Tennessee State
- 8:42University, awesome facility in Murfreesboro.
- 8:47It has rotated in the past but generally always stayed within
- 8:51the Middle Tennessee region just because of the shape of
- 8:53Tennessee it makes makes sense to meet in the middle travel
- 8:58wise. So it has rotated to other
- 9:00facilities. When I first got to Tennessee,
- 9:02it was at Rockville High School, but almost always is at Middle
- 9:06Tennessee State. So is our is the private school
- 9:11state meet and public school state meet at the same weekend?
- 9:16Within the same week. So for example, our
- 9:21classification for a private school will take place on a
- 9:23Wednesday and everything will take place on that day and then
- 9:27the next day the next classification will go.
- 9:29So it all takes place over one week and weekend.
- 9:32Got it? So because we're doing a finals
- 9:34only it's a one day meet and that one day is dedicated all to
- 9:38that division. So Division 2A is all Wednesday.
- 9:42There's no other divisions coming in that day.
- 9:45They have, They have done. Typically it's like that some
- 9:49years they have had it where they've done 2 divisions in one
- 9:51day. So maybe the first heat will be
- 9:53division two, the second heat will be Division One.
- 9:56So they they have played around with that a little bit, but
- 9:58typically do one or two divisions a day.
- 10:02And you said it's all week. So is it literally like this?
- 10:05I call it a state champion week. Is it like Wednesday is the
- 10:08state championship Thursday's the state championship, Friday's
- 10:10the state championship, Saturday's the state
- 10:11championship? Yeah, they go to Tuesday through
- 10:14Friday, so every day is a state meet.
- 10:16Yeah, love it. Very cool.
- 10:18Oh, very cool. All right, let's go over to the
- 10:20public school side. How are we qualifying for this
- 10:23state? Meet at Middle Tennessee State
- 10:24on the public school. Yeah, so a little bit different
- 10:27on the public school side, they have area meets.
- 10:31I'm not exactly as familiar with their qualification process, but
- 10:33do you know they have an initial area meet that allows them to
- 10:36qualify for a regional meet before they they make it to
- 10:39state. So they're going a three round
- 10:43system, so they're going area first.
- 10:46Some qualifying of top two or top three are going on to
- 10:49regional, regional same thing. And then we're going on to the
- 10:51state meet, which is happening there at Middle Tennessee State
- 10:54during this state championship week.
- 10:56Yes, correct. Perfect.
- 10:57Very cool. We've learned some states, you
- 11:00know, because we know, here's what we know, we know track and
- 11:02field is the most inclusive sport in the world.
- 11:07Short, tall, big, small. There is some event for you to
- 11:10have success with in our great sport states that we're
- 11:13learning. We're learning a lot that are
- 11:14adding some type of adaptive unified wheelchair events at
- 11:19their state meet. Anything like that going on in
- 11:21Tennessee? Yeah.
- 11:22No, not at the moment. I've seen other places, but we I
- 11:25haven't seen that in Tennessee yet.
- 11:26So OK, perfect. Now we've got all these state
- 11:29meets here Drew. So we've got you know six boy
- 11:33teams are winning a state 400 meter title and six girls are
- 11:37winning a 400 meter state title. Some states, whether it's
- 11:40officially through your association or unofficially
- 11:43through like maybe a coach's association, will do a meet of
- 11:46champions. They'll get the top 2-3 from
- 11:48each division and in each event put them all together, let them
- 11:51race and figure out air quotes here.
- 11:52The true state champion. Anything like that going on?
- 11:55No, not at the moment. I wish, but not at the moment.
- 11:58All right, well, you may get that.
- 11:59And you know, we got got the the magic wand coming up.
- 12:02We'll see if that's what Drew's Magic Wand's going to be.
- 12:04All right, let's talk about events, Drew.
- 12:06So let's go group by group here. We can assume you're doing the
- 12:09124 and the eight for boys and girls in the next two events.
- 12:13Are you doing the 1632? The fifteen 3000?
- 12:16The mile? Two mile.
- 12:17What's the next two here? 1632 Most common perfect 110
- 12:22high hurdles 100 high hurdles for boys and girls.
- 12:24Correct. Yes, 300 hurdles for boys and
- 12:27girls. Yes, correct.
- 12:29Let's go to the relays. We know you're doing the four by
- 12:31one and four by four because if you weren't, you are not really
- 12:33doing track and field and you wouldn't be on this podcast.
- 12:35What other relays might we be doing?
- 12:38The four by 200m relay and the four by 800 meter relay.
- 12:41Awesome. No Sprint medleys, distant
- 12:44medleys, shuttle hurdles, anything like that.
- 12:47No. So 4 by 1, four by two, 4x4, 4
- 12:50by 8, Correct. Perfect.
- 12:52Let's go over to our field events.
- 12:53Long jump and triple jump, boys and girls.
- 12:56Correct. Yep, shot put in discus.
- 12:58Boys and girls. Yes, povault, high jump Boys and
- 13:01girls. Yes.
- 13:02Anything steeplechase, javelin, hammer, multis, anything like
- 13:07that at the state meet? We do have a multis which has
- 13:11actually has its own separate meet to to.
- 13:17I love when there's Multis at the state meet.
- 13:19Sorry and it happens so infrequently.
- 13:22To set up my next question, do those multi points count towards
- 13:25the team title? Yes, they do.
- 13:27OK. So how, when it's a separate
- 13:29meet, how do we do it then? That's what I wanted to know.
- 13:31Yeah. So FRA actually hosts our Our
- 13:34State Decathlon, So we hosted the week before the state meet.
- 13:38So that gives them enough time to hopefully rest and be ready
- 13:41for their other events. It's the week before State meet,
- 13:44but that's also the I assume I didn't ask about time frame, the
- 13:48week of regionals. No, there's a weak gap in
- 13:53between actually. Got it.
- 13:54So regionals next weekend is multi state meet, next weekend
- 13:58is state meet, correct? What multi are we doing?
- 14:00Are we doing heptathlon and decathlon?
- 14:02Yes, both heptathlon and decathlon.
- 14:04Yeah. Oh, is that, you know, again,
- 14:06that's very unique. I love that as far as you know,
- 14:10Has that been around for a long time?
- 14:11Is that something new? Yeah, that's been around quite a
- 14:14while. Some some of the coaches I've
- 14:17worked with have been coaching here in Tennessee for a long
- 14:19time and it's it's been here as long as they have.
- 14:21So and and I just want to make sure not for clarification but
- 14:26for point of emphasis that that meet that you're hosting for the
- 14:29hep and deck the week before state meet when I win the
- 14:32heptathlon those 10 points are going.
- 14:34I assume it's 10 points are going.
- 14:36You know the multi should be double that, that we shouldn't
- 14:39move that. But those points are going to
- 14:41the next weekend, so some team is already starting off with at
- 14:44least 10 points in their state title search. 100% awesome.
- 14:48That is very cool. I love that.
- 14:50Some of these other events, Javelin, Hammer, Steep, yeah,
- 14:56Steeple, etcetera. Some states kind of like this
- 14:58Meet of Champions will do an unofficial state meets because
- 15:02it's not held at the state meet. You know, it's usually a coach
- 15:04who has a lot of passion for the hammer or something like that.
- 15:07Anything like that that you're aware of?
- 15:09No, nothing like that that I'm aware of.
- 15:11OK, now before we get to a couple of fun questions here,
- 15:14Drew, anything else that we should know, Anything that I
- 15:17didn't ask that makes Tennessee Track unique?
- 15:21You you double point your relays, although you should in
- 15:24the multis, you only score 6 places.
- 15:27You run the four by four at midnight because that's a
- 15:29Tennessee tradition. I don't know anything unique
- 15:31that we should be aware of. No, Other than the running, the
- 15:35heptathlon, decathlon. That really is the one unique
- 15:37thing I've noticed. As I say, you're pretty
- 15:39straightforward until you really take a hard left and go to both
- 15:42eyes. That's awesome.
- 15:42That's a good left to take. All right, Drew, help us settle
- 15:46a debate, at least in your culture, your area, your bus
- 15:50ride to the meet. When we're talking about this
- 15:52state meet down there at Middle Tennessee State University, are
- 15:55we qualifying for the state? Meet states state?
- 15:59How? Help us settle this debate.
- 16:00Which one are we saying? Qualifying for the state meet
- 16:04but with a southern drawl. So I heard no S but I heard some
- 16:09long alphabet. All right, so state meet.
- 16:12Put that in the state meet column.
- 16:14No no states here in Tennessee. At least in in Drew's neck of
- 16:17the woods. All right man you've done a
- 16:19great job Really do appreciate you love learning about that
- 16:22multi state meet part of your state meet there so you win the
- 16:25magic wand my friend. If you could change one thing
- 16:28and please only one thing. That would make the athlete
- 16:32experience, the coach experience, the sport better for
- 16:36track and field high school in Tennessee, what would you maybe
- 16:39change? Yeah, I I have thought about
- 16:42this a lot and I think the one thing I would change is I would
- 16:45make it just one automatic qualifying spot per region in
- 16:50our state. So the winner of the East, West
- 16:52and Middle would automatically qualify and we would just take
- 16:55the next five fastest or best marks.
- 16:58Is that because you have a concern that we're not maybe
- 17:01getting all the best athletes because of, you know, we don't
- 17:04have a choice of who all moves to the West side of Tennessee
- 17:07and we could be in a stacked region there?
- 17:09Yeah, I can understand the, the idea behind, you know, trying to
- 17:13get folks from different regions.
- 17:14I can definitely understand that.
- 17:15But I've run into instances where, hey, you know, maybe an
- 17:19athlete's finished fourth in our region, but they've got.
- 17:25You know, maybe the 4th, you know, you know the time faster
- 17:28than some of the other times in the east and West regions or or
- 17:31or could be the middle region. So yeah that that makes a lot of
- 17:33sense. That has been the number one use
- 17:36of the magic wand is how do we get the the right athletes to
- 17:41the state meet that we don't penalize them for you know again
- 17:43living in in a wrong region that they didn't choose to live in or
- 17:47they you know get sick that weekend or false star.
- 17:51How do we, you know, get get them all to the state meet, then
- 17:53let all the cards lying on the table And who gets first, Who
- 17:56gets second at that point? So it makes a lot of sense.
- 17:59Yeah. Hi, Drew, man, thank you so
- 18:01much. You know, we're continuing this
- 18:02journey on through the entire country.
- 18:04And this has been an amazing stop at Tennessee.
- 18:06Like I said, you guys were pretty straight and narrow, you
- 18:08know, nothing funny, No business going on here in Tennessee.
- 18:10And then you do the multis, which puts you, I want to say
- 18:14here at Tennessee, maybe it's a second or third state right
- 18:18around that has some type of multis at the state meets.
- 18:21I love that. And we, we started this series
- 18:23in the goal of creating communication among states.
- 18:26So if there's a state of coach, if you're listening right now
- 18:28and you're like, man, I've always wanted the multis at our
- 18:31state meet, but we just can't figure it out.
- 18:33Well, here we go. Bunch of coaches in Tennessee
- 18:35have figured it out. Let's start that conversation
- 18:37and bring those events to your state or all the other events
- 18:41that you're learning throughout our whole 51 state travel here
- 18:45throughout the country. So Drew, thank you so much.
- 18:47We're very, very grateful for you to be here today, join us
- 18:50tomorrow. We're going to go to another
- 18:51state. And if you haven't, listen to
- 18:53the other ones before Tennessee, let's get to go on and listen to
- 18:56those. Thanks everybody.
