Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: With Dick Powell as Richard Diamond and Ed Begley as
- 0:03Speaker 1: Lieutenant Walter Levinson, NBC's early detective series follows a New
- 0:08Speaker 1: York case that begins with a cab driver. He delivers
- 0:12Speaker 1: Diamond a blood-stained hat bearing the initials BK, along with
- 0:16Speaker 1: a recently fired. 38 revolver, evidence with no victim in sight.
- 0:22Speaker 1: The trail leads Diamond to Bertram Kalmas and his employer,
- 0:26Speaker 1: George Watkins, while conflicting accounts and Lieutenant Levinson's investigation complicate
- 0:32Speaker 1: the search.
- 0:33Speaker 2: For the facts.
- 0:35Speaker 1: From July 2nd, 1949, this is episode 11 of Richard Diamond,
- 0:40Speaker 1: Private Detective, The Bloody Hat Case. We now take you
- 0:45Speaker 1: back to the original broadcast.
- 0:49Speaker 2: THE END.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Here's Dick Powell as Richard Diamond, private detective.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Hello there. My name's Diamond. If you spotted me on
- 1:30Speaker 2: the street, you'd probably figure me for an average working man.
- 1:33Speaker 2: But you'd be wrong. I fit the description all right
- 1:36Speaker 2: because I break my back six days a week to
- 1:38Speaker 2: keep my piggy bank nice and stuffed. But my occupation
- 1:42Speaker 2: puts me in a class by myself. I'm a private, honey,
- 1:47Speaker 2: nothing in this world but detective. You probably say, so what?
- 1:51Speaker 2: The average working man comes under the heading of a
- 1:53Speaker 2: lot of different jobs. And you'd be right on that count.
- 1:57Speaker 2: But there's one little thing that puts me in a
- 1:59Speaker 2: class all by myself.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Trouble.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Trouble. Mr. and Mrs. Average John Doe work six days
- 2:06Speaker 2: a week to keep clear of it. I put in
- 2:08Speaker 2: the same time playing footsies with it. It's a kind
- 2:12Speaker 2: of silent partner with references dating all the way back
- 2:15Speaker 2: to the year one. People get in trouble every second,
- 2:18Speaker 2: and I count on a small percentage to come to
- 2:21Speaker 2: me to get them out of it. The rest? Odds
- 2:24Speaker 2: and good advertising. As an example, take the other night
- 2:28Speaker 2: in a little bistro over on 48th Street. A couple
- 2:31Speaker 2: of guys sitting at a back table were getting set
- 2:33Speaker 2: for a special brand of trouble. The big kind that
- 2:37Speaker 2: you find under the heading of murder.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Oh, Bert, old boy, this is turning out.
- 2:41Speaker 2: To be a wonderful evening.
- 2:43Speaker 4: I'm glad you're enjoying it, George.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:45Speaker 5: Say, who's the blonde over there in the booth? Well,
- 2:49Speaker 5: I've never seen her before, but... She's cute.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah, she sure is. Good evening, baby.
- 2:54Speaker 4: George, George, take it easy.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Maybe she's waiting for someone. Oh, don't be silly. Look,
- 2:59Speaker 2: she's smiling. Let's ask her over to the table.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Well, I still think she's waiting for someone. If you
- 3:04Speaker 4: want to take the chance, go ahead, you ask her.
- 3:06Speaker 4: All right, I will.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I said good evening.
- 3:12Speaker 6: Good evening.
- 3:14Speaker 5: My friend and I noticed you were sitting alone and
- 3:18Speaker 5: we wondered if you'd join us.
- 3:19Speaker 7: Oh, I don't believe I can. You see.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Oh, please. Just for a few drinks?
- 3:24Speaker 6: No, really.
- 3:26Speaker 7: Thank you just the same.
- 3:27Speaker 5: Well, if you say so, but I'll be unhappy for
- 3:30Speaker 5: the rest of the evening.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Hi, baby.
- 3:32Speaker 8: Tony.
- 3:32Speaker 4: I'm sorry I took so long, but... Hey, who's this guy?
- 3:35Speaker 6: Now, tell me.
- 3:36Speaker 4: I said, who's the guy?
- 3:36Speaker 2: Uh, if you'll excuse me.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Now, you, wait a minute. Uh, George, come on. I
- 3:39Speaker 4: think we'd better leave. Is this guy a friend of yours? Yes,
- 3:42Speaker 4: he is. Was this guy making a pitch, ma'am?
- 3:44Speaker 7: No, he only asked me over for a drink.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Oh, he did, huh? Now, wait a minute, pal. Please,
- 3:49Speaker 2: I made a mistake.
- 3:49Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
- 3:50Speaker 4: So you made a mistake. Well, I don't like jokers
- 3:53Speaker 4: that try and pick.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Up my girl.
- 3:55Speaker 8: Hey, wait a minute.
- 3:56Speaker 4: You didn't have to slug him. Maybe you'd like to
- 3:58Speaker 4: do something about it. Maybe I would. Oh, no.
- 4:05Speaker 7: Well, that's the first time Tony ended up on the
- 4:08Speaker 7: short end of a fight in a long time.
- 4:10Speaker 4: You all right, George?
- 4:11Speaker 9: Yes.
- 4:12Speaker 5: I think I cut my head.
- 4:14Speaker 7: Yeah, you're bleeding all over the place. You better get
- 4:16Speaker 7: out of here, mister. I saw the manager duck in
- 4:18Speaker 7: the back room. He's probably calling the cops.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Here, let me give you a hand, George. Here, now,
- 4:23Speaker 4: take my hat and wear it over the cut until
- 4:25Speaker 4: you get home.
- 4:25Speaker 7: I'm getting out of here, too. You want me to
- 4:27Speaker 7: drop you off?
- 4:28Speaker 2: What about your boyfriend?
- 4:30Speaker 4: He's still unconscious.
- 4:31Speaker 7: He was that way when I met him. You want
- 4:33Speaker 7: the lift or not?
- 4:34Speaker 5: What about you, Bert?
- 4:35Speaker 4: Oh, I'll be all right. Now go on, let her
- 4:37Speaker 4: take you somewhere so you can get cleaned up. I'll
- 4:39Speaker 4: grab a cab and head for my place.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I'll call you in the morning. But I don't want to.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Now stop arguing. You can't afford a scandal.
- 4:44Speaker 2: All right.
- 4:45Speaker 6: Come on, honey, let's go.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Well, this is a very nice apartment.
- 5:01Speaker 7: You better go get cleaned up. Back to that room.
- 5:05Speaker 7: I'll get a couple of drinks.
- 5:06Speaker 5: I can sure use a drink.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I won't be long.
- 5:08Speaker 7: Take your time.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:14Speaker 7: Tony, get out of here.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Where is that guy?
- 5:16Speaker 7: Come on, get out of here.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Why, you cheap little.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I'll beat it out of you.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Let go of me. What's going on?
- 5:21Speaker 6: Take your hands off me. You take your hands off her.
- 5:24Speaker 4: I'll kill the both of you.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Help.
- 5:27Speaker 7: There's a gun in the sand.
- 5:29Speaker 4: A gun?
- 5:29Speaker 1: All right.
- 5:30Speaker 4: I'll wring your little neck.
- 5:32Speaker 2: You shot him. I did?
- 5:36Speaker 6: You better get out of here.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Yeah, but what about you?
- 5:42Speaker 7: Go on, get out while you can.
- 5:44Speaker 6: I'll think of something.
- 5:45Speaker 9: Yes.
- 5:46Speaker 6: Leave the gun. I'll float the river or something.
- 5:50Speaker 5: All right.
- 5:51Speaker 6: Now go on, beat it. You just killed a man.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Yeah, come in.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Hiya, Mr.
- 6:11Speaker 10: Diamond.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Well, Hennessy, what did you do, wreck your cab? Nah,
- 6:15Speaker 2: it's down in the front. Hey, that's a war magazine
- 6:19Speaker 2: you're reading there. Yeah. Listen to what it says here
- 6:22Speaker 2: about women's bathing suits.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Huh?
- 6:25Speaker 2: 1949 suits allow maximum exposure to sun. Note plunging neckline.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Note.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Who's going to miss it? If it plunges into the Lord,
- 6:34Speaker 2: wind up at the bend.
- 6:36Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Uh, Mr. Diamond, would you mind shoving it in the drawer?
- 6:39Speaker 2: The picture distracts me. Not at all, no. I don't
- 6:42Speaker 2: blame you, Hennessy.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Now, what's on your mind? This.
- 6:48Speaker 4: A hat?
- 6:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Well, I don't think I can do you much good.
- 6:52Speaker 2: What did you bring it to me for?
- 6:52Speaker 10: I found it in the gutter over in Flatbush.
- 6:55Speaker 2: So what? Some guy loses a hat. Don't tell me
- 6:58Speaker 2: you want me to find him.
- 6:59Speaker 10: No, I just got to worrying a little, you see.
- 7:02Speaker 10: I found this beside you.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Oh, a.
- 7:05Speaker 5: 38.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Well, let's have a look.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Take a look at the hat, too. It's got blood
- 7:09Speaker 4: all over the inside.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yeah. And initials on the inside. BK. Gun's been fired.
- 7:18Speaker 2: You can still smell the powder in the barrel. Why
- 7:21Speaker 2: didn't you take this to the police?
- 7:22Speaker 10: Oh, I didn't want to get mixed up in it.
- 7:24Speaker 10: You see, I got to pick up as many fares
- 7:26Speaker 10: as I can. I ain't got nobody to drive my
- 7:28Speaker 10: cab for me. And I didn't want to spend the
- 7:30Speaker 10: day answering questions down at headquarters.
- 7:32Speaker 2: You understand? Well, you'll probably have to anyway. I'll have
- 7:34Speaker 2: to notify them.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 7:35Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 7:36Speaker 10: Well, I thought maybe you could find out who owned
- 7:38Speaker 10: the hat and maybe solve the case before you notify him,
- 7:41Speaker 10: you see? That way I wouldn't have to spend too
- 7:43Speaker 10: much time. I could just tell him I found it
- 7:45Speaker 10: and beat it. Well, I can't withhold evidence. It'd take
- 7:48Speaker 10: away my license. And if you did, they'd lock you up. Okay,
- 7:51Speaker 10: I just thought maybe... Well, I can check the hat
- 7:53Speaker 10: store before I get to the fifth precinct.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Yeah, well, won't that be a tough job?
- 7:57Speaker 2: There's a lot of hat stores, you know. Well, the
- 7:58Speaker 2: hat's got a label. Besides, when someone finds a bloody
- 8:02Speaker 2: hat with a 38 lying next to it, I get interested.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Particularly when there isn't a corpse to go with it.
- 8:07Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Well, I gotta go, Mr.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Diamond.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Thanks a lot. You got a free ride anytime you want.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I may take care of that. So long, Hennessy. Well,
- 8:17Speaker 2: there you are. What did that tell you? When you're
- 8:20Speaker 2: working with trouble, something always shows up. Sometimes it's just
- 8:24Speaker 2: a routine case. A guy knocks off his wife and
- 8:28Speaker 2: he comes to you because he suddenly found out that
- 8:30Speaker 2: he had that lonely feeling. Or maybe you get a
- 8:34Speaker 2: real screwy one. A taxidermist that got tired of stuffing
- 8:38Speaker 2: animals and went to work on a neighbor. Or then
- 8:41Speaker 2: you get one that gives you the same feeling you
- 8:43Speaker 2: get when you pick up a poker hand and the
- 8:44Speaker 2: first four cards you look at are all spades. Well,
- 8:48Speaker 2: I was holding two cards. A hat with blood on it,
- 8:52Speaker 2: a gun that had been fired, and all I needed
- 8:54Speaker 2: to fill out the hand was a body. By all rights,
- 8:57Speaker 2: I should have taken the evidence right down to my
- 8:59Speaker 2: friend Lieutenant Levinson at Homicide. But I didn't have anything
- 9:03Speaker 2: to do, so I decided to see what kind of
- 9:05Speaker 2: pieces I could fit into the puzzle. The label in
- 9:08Speaker 2: the hat was from a store on Fifth Avenue. It
- 9:11Speaker 2: wasn't far from my office, so I walked it.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Yes, sir. Something I can do for you?
- 9:15Speaker 2: Yeah. Stop munching your sense in and tell me if
- 9:18Speaker 2: this hat is from your store.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Well, let me see it. These glasses are not telescopes,
- 9:22Speaker 4: you know.
- 9:23Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 9:23Speaker 9: Here.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Well.
- 9:25Speaker 4: If you're planning to return this merchandise, sir, I can
- 9:28Speaker 4: assure you the store will not accept it. You've been
- 9:31Speaker 4: bleeding on the sweatband. Look, Rosebud, I just want to
- 9:33Speaker 4: know if the hat is from this store. It most
- 9:35Speaker 4: certainly is. It's one of our custom models. Who did
- 9:38Speaker 4: you sell it to? If you found this hat, we
- 9:40Speaker 4: will be glad to return it to its owner. We
- 9:42Speaker 4: are not supposed to give out the names of our clients.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I have a small badge here that should cut this
- 9:47Speaker 2: conversation down to a few words. See?
- 9:50Speaker 8: Oh.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Now, would you mind telling me to whom did you
- 9:53Speaker 2: sell this hat?
- 9:54Speaker 4: Well, just because you're a detective, I am not impressed. However,
- 9:58Speaker 4: under the circumstances, I'll give you the buyer's name.
- 10:00Speaker 2: You're a real sport.
- 10:01Speaker 4: I suppose you wear a shoulder holster, too. Or is
- 10:03Speaker 4: that bulge your tailor's fault?
- 10:05Speaker 2: Psst. Come here. I really keep a midget in there.
- 10:09Speaker 2: You don't say? Yeah. He spits through the lapel of
- 10:12Speaker 2: stupid hat clerks. Oh. Now, come on, bright eyes. Who
- 10:16Speaker 2: bought the hat?
- 10:17Speaker 4: Well, if you'll just hold your horses.
- 10:18Speaker 2: That's the new line, if I ever heard one. Come on, Bubbles.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Here it is.
- 10:25Speaker 4: This hat was sold to a Mr. Bertram Kalmas. We
- 10:28Speaker 4: make all his hats for him. Well, bully for you.
- 10:31Speaker 4: What's his address? 430 Sutton Place. Now, will that be all, sir?
- 10:36Speaker 2: Yes, that will be all, and thank you. You've been
- 10:39Speaker 2: a freak through the whole ugliness. I left him watering
- 10:44Speaker 2: his gardenia and headed for the residence of one Mr.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Bertram Calmas. The apartment house was about ten blocks away,
- 10:51Speaker 2: and with the money I had in my pocket, all
- 10:53Speaker 2: taxi cabs started looking like iron claws with four wheels.
- 10:57Speaker 2: I walked. Yes? How do you mean that?
- 11:04Speaker 6: Yes, I don't want any.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Oh, and I've got a pretty good sales talk.
- 11:08Speaker 6: I never buy anything unless I have a demonstration.
- 11:10Speaker 2: My middle name is Semper Paratus. Like the Coast Guard,
- 11:13Speaker 2: I'm always prepared.
- 11:14Speaker 6: I suppose I could top that, but I'm getting tired
- 11:16Speaker 6: of trying to close the door on your foot. What
- 11:19Speaker 6: is it you want?
- 11:20Speaker 2: I hate to admit it, but I'm looking for Bertram Calmus.
- 11:23Speaker 6: My husband.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Good for him. Is he in?
- 11:26Speaker 6: No, but he will be any minute. And for the boss?
- 11:29Speaker 2: This hat, I believe it's his.
- 11:30Speaker 6: What blonde's apartment did it turn up in?
- 11:33Speaker 2: It was found in the gutter in Flatbush.
- 11:36Speaker 12: Well, Flatbush is a little out of his territory, but
- 11:38Speaker 12: the gutter sounds familiar. What's that stain all over it?
- 11:42Speaker 2: Blood. Does your husband bleed a lot?
- 11:44Speaker 6: Not recently. We've been getting along. Are you from the police?
- 11:48Speaker 2: I'm a detective. Oh. Come in. I'd hate to be
- 11:55Speaker 2: selling brushes.
- 11:56Speaker 6: I'd have slammed the door on your face.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Oh, well, then I made an impression. You have.
- 12:02Speaker 12: Let's just say you're waiting for a sacrifice to move
- 12:04Speaker 12: you to second base.
- 12:08Speaker 6: Won't you sit down?
- 12:09Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 12:11Speaker 2: What happens when I round third?
- 12:13Speaker 6: That depends on your batting average.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Diamond, Mrs. Calvert.
- 12:18Speaker 6: That fits.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Now, getting back to a very dull subject, does this
- 12:22Speaker 2: hat belong to your husband?
- 12:23Speaker 6: I don't know. It looks like one of his. Has
- 12:25Speaker 6: it got any initials on the band?
- 12:27Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 12:27Speaker 2: BK.
- 12:28Speaker 6: When did you find it?
- 12:30Speaker 2: I didn't. The cab driver picked it up this morning.
- 12:32Speaker 6: And it isn't my husband's blood. He left about a
- 12:35Speaker 6: half an hour ago to do some shopping, and he
- 12:36Speaker 6: was very bloodless.
- 12:37Speaker 2: No cuts on his head?
- 12:38Speaker 6: No cuts. He came in around two this morning. He'd
- 12:42Speaker 6: been drinking, but he wasn't caught up.
- 12:43Speaker 12: Oh, there he is now. I hope we can discuss
- 12:48Speaker 12: baseball in a bit.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Oh, I got all the things you wanted in it.
- 12:51Speaker 6: Um, Bert, this is Mr.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Diamond.
- 12:52Speaker 6: He's a detective.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 12:55Speaker 11: Well, how are you?
- 12:56Speaker 2: Fine, Mr. Calvins. Tell me, is this your hat? My hat?
- 13:00Speaker 2: Let me see it.
- 13:02Speaker 4: Why, no.
- 13:02Speaker 2: No, it isn't. The hat store on Fifth Avenue says
- 13:05Speaker 2: it's older to you.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Well, I can't help what they say.
- 13:07Speaker 2: That's not my hat.
- 13:08Speaker 6: Are you sure, darling? It was found in a gutter.
- 13:10Speaker 4: I don't care if they found it on a Yale
- 13:12Speaker 4: man in the Harvard Club. It's not mine.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Well, I guess I'll have to take your word for it.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Wait, wait.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Isn't that blood on the hat? Yeah. Well, goodbye, Mrs.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Calumus and Mr. Calumus. Nice meeting you both.
- 13:24Speaker 4: I'll see you to the door.
- 13:25Speaker 6: I can do it.
- 13:26Speaker 4: I know you can, dear.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Coming, Mr.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Diamond?
- 13:30Speaker 2: Sure. Goodbye.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Back again, Mr.
- 13:33Speaker 6: Garmis.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Well, goodbye, Mr. Garmis. Where can I call you? What?
- 13:39Speaker 2: I can't explain now.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Where can I call you in about a half an hour?
- 13:41Speaker 2: My office. It's in the book.
- 13:42Speaker 4: You'll hear from me, but please, please don't do anything
- 13:44Speaker 4: until then.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Okay. Half an hour. Then I go to the police
- 13:47Speaker 2: with this hat. Who's? Mr.
- 14:03Speaker 8: Diamond, this is Bert Kalmas.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 14:06Speaker 8: Yes, I couldn't say anything to you in front of
- 14:08Speaker 8: my wife.
- 14:09Speaker 4: That is my hat.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Oh, I thought so. Why did you deny it?
- 14:13Speaker 11: Well, I was out with a pal last night. There
- 14:15Speaker 11: was a fight over a girl. I didn't want to
- 14:17Speaker 11: mention it.
- 14:17Speaker 8: In front of my wife.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Oh, how did the blood get on the hat?
- 14:20Speaker 8: My friend got hit on the head, and I loaned
- 14:21Speaker 8: him my hat to cover up the wound.
- 14:23Speaker 2: What was it doing in a gutter in Flatbush?
- 14:25Speaker 4: I really don't know.
- 14:26Speaker 8: My friend left with the girl, and I went right home.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Well, who is this friend of yours? I think something
- 14:31Speaker 2: may have happened to him.
- 14:32Speaker 8: Well, I called him this morning, and he seemed very
- 14:33Speaker 8: nervous about something, and he asked me to come over.
- 14:36Speaker 8: I'm in the lobby of his hotel right now.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Ah, he's probably just worried about the girl he picked up.
- 14:40Speaker 2: As long as the blood on the hat was from
- 14:42Speaker 2: a cut on his head, I don't think there's too
- 14:44Speaker 2: much to worry about.
- 14:45Speaker 8: No, no, Mr. Diamond, I think it's more than that.
- 14:47Speaker 8: He's my employer, and I know him pretty well. I
- 14:50Speaker 8: do wish you'd come over.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Well, all right, Mr. Calumet. What's the address?
- 14:53Speaker 8: The Whitsitt Hotel on East 54th Street. I'll meet you
- 14:56Speaker 8: in the lobby.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Don't ask me why I started getting that lousy feeling
- 15:04Speaker 2: when all I had was a bloody hat, a gun,
- 15:06Speaker 2: and a pretty good explanation for one of the items.
- 15:09Speaker 2: But there it was, that jammed-up feeling in the pit
- 15:12Speaker 2: of my stomach like I'd just swallowed a whole pineapple.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Something was wrong, and I wanted to find out what.
- 15:19Speaker 2: So I hurried over to the Whitsitt Hotel and met
- 15:21Speaker 2: Calamus in the lobby.
- 15:22Speaker 4: I'm glad you came, Mr.
- 15:23Speaker 9: Diamond.
- 15:24Speaker 4: I just put in a call to George's room, and
- 15:25Speaker 4: someone else answered.
- 15:26Speaker 2: So what?
- 15:27Speaker 11: Well, the man asked a lot of questions, like who
- 15:29Speaker 11: I was and why I... What did I want with
- 15:31Speaker 11: George and.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Oh, I take it George is your friend of last night.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Yes, George Watkins. He's the president of the firm I
- 15:36Speaker 4: work for.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Well, let's go up. When someone starts asking questions like
- 15:40Speaker 2: that on the phone, it begins to sound like the
- 15:41Speaker 2: police have moved in. Come on. Come on. Yeah. Oh, hello, Walt. Rick,
- 16:00Speaker 2: what are you doing here? Fair question. I'll answer yours
- 16:02Speaker 2: if you'll do the same for me. I came up
- 16:04Speaker 2: to see you, Mr. George Watkins. So did I.
- 16:06Speaker 4: What's the matter? Is George in some kind of trouble?
- 16:09Speaker 2: Who's this guy? Oh, he's a friend of Watkins. Works
- 16:11Speaker 2: for him. Oh, yeah? Well, come on in.
- 16:14Speaker 4: George.
- 16:15Speaker 2: George, what's going on here?
- 16:16Speaker 5: You better let the lieutenant tell you, Bert. I can't
- 16:19Speaker 5: think anymore. What's the charge, Walt?
- 16:21Speaker 2: Murder.
- 16:22Speaker 6: Murder?
- 16:23Speaker 13: You got a call from a girl last night who
- 16:25Speaker 13: said a man named George Watkins killed someone in her apartment.
- 16:28Speaker 2: When we got over there, we found the girl dead, too.
- 16:30Speaker 4: Oh, well, you must have the wrong man, Inspector George, Lieutenant.
- 16:33Speaker 2: And I'm sure you think George wouldn't, but he just confessed. George? Yes, Bert,
- 16:38Speaker 2: I killed the man.
- 16:39Speaker 5: But I didn't kill her. The man came in and
- 16:43Speaker 5: tried to strangle her. She told me to get the
- 16:45Speaker 5: gun in the drawer, and when the man wouldn't let
- 16:47Speaker 5: her go, I shot him.
- 16:48Speaker 2: That isn't what the girl told us.
- 16:50Speaker 13: She said she took this guy home after he'd been
- 16:52Speaker 13: in a fight, and when they got to her apartment,
- 16:54Speaker 13: he made a pass just as her boyfriend came in.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Then Watkins shot him and ran out.
- 16:58Speaker 13: We figured he got excited, and when he had time
- 17:00Speaker 13: to think about it, he went back and killed the
- 17:02Speaker 13: only other witness.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I didn't kill the girl.
- 17:04Speaker 5: I never went back there at all.
- 17:05Speaker 4: I came straight here.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Now, Walt, Mr. Calmus here was with him up until
- 17:09Speaker 2: the time he left with the girl. Is that right, Mr.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Calmus? Why, yes, sir.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Now, there was a previous fight, and Watkins got that
- 17:15Speaker 2: cut on his head. Mr. Calmus loaned him his hat
- 17:17Speaker 2: to cover the wound.
- 17:18Speaker 4: That's right, sir.
- 17:19Speaker 2: And, uh, oh, by the way, Walt, what caliber was
- 17:21Speaker 2: the murder weapon? 38, but we haven't found the gun yet. Here,
- 17:25Speaker 2: check this one with ballistics. How'd you find this? Cab
- 17:28Speaker 2: driver named Hennessy brought it in to me this morning.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Found it lying with a hat. You ever see this
- 17:32Speaker 2: gun before, Watkins?
- 17:33Speaker 5: No. I told you I don't own a gun.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Well, what time do you figure he killed the man
- 17:38Speaker 2: and the girl? The coroner fixed the time of death
- 17:40Speaker 2: about one o'clock this morning. Hmm. How long were you
- 17:43Speaker 2: at this girl's apartment, Mr. Watkins?
- 17:44Speaker 5: Why, about five minutes before her boyfriend came in. I
- 17:48Speaker 5: shot him and left immediately. And you don't remember taking
- 17:51Speaker 5: your hat or the gun?
- 17:52Speaker 2: What are you getting at, Rick? This is an open
- 17:54Speaker 2: and shut case.
- 17:55Speaker 13: He admits killing one of them, but he won't admit
- 17:57Speaker 13: the other killing because he knows it was premeditated.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Oh, just a hunch, Walt. Just a hunch.
- 18:01Speaker 11: Mr.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Watkins, would you mind telling me just what happened after
- 18:03Speaker 2: the girl's boyfriend started choking him?
- 18:05Speaker 5: Well, I grabbed the gun out of the dresser near
- 18:08Speaker 5: the kitchen and I shot him. And the girl told
- 18:11Speaker 5: me to get out, that she'd take care of things,
- 18:13Speaker 5: so I dropped the gun and ran.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Did you hear anything else? Anything unusual?
- 18:17Speaker 8: No.
- 18:18Speaker 5: But, yes, now that you mention it. I did hear something,
- 18:23Speaker 5: but it slipped my mind until now.
- 18:24Speaker 2: What did you hear?
- 18:25Speaker 5: Well, I don't know whether I can describe it or not.
- 18:29Speaker 5: It sounded like someone had opened a bottle of flat champagne.
- 18:33Speaker 2: What are you getting at, Rick? Ah, wait a minute, Walt.
- 18:36Speaker 2: When did you hear this noise?
- 18:38Speaker 5: Right after I shot the man. I remember wondering if
- 18:41Speaker 5: someone hadn't opened.
- 18:41Speaker 2: A bottle in the kitchen. Is that where the noise
- 18:43Speaker 2: came from? Yes, I think so. All right, if I
- 18:48Speaker 2: go over and case the scene, Walt. We've done that. Yeah,
- 18:50Speaker 2: but you weren't looking for something. Why don't you come
- 18:53Speaker 2: with me, Mr. Calamus? I'd like to talk with you.
- 18:55Speaker 2: What's the address, Walt? 16 West 113th Street. Now, look,
- 18:59Speaker 2: don't worry too much, George.
- 19:00Speaker 4: I can handle the business, and in the meantime, I'll
- 19:02Speaker 4: do everything to get you off.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Thanks, Bert. Now, you wait a minute, Rick. If you
- 19:05Speaker 2: think you know something.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Walt! Yeah?
- 19:07Speaker 9: Bye.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Calmus and I went downstairs and took a cab over
- 19:14Speaker 2: to 16 West 113th Street. It was a middle-class apartment
- 19:18Speaker 2: house in Flatbush. A four-story brownstone. I let Calmus pay
- 19:22Speaker 2: the fare and we went in. I wonder what floor
- 19:25Speaker 2: it's on.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Well, she'll tell on the mailboxes. Yeah, here it is.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Nan Phillips, 206.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Well, let's go up. What do you do for Mr. Watkins?
- 19:37Speaker 11: I'm his vice-president. That's why I took him out last night.
- 19:40Speaker 11: I wanted to interest him in a new account. I
- 19:43Speaker 11: just can't imagine him killing anyone, but I guess people
- 19:46Speaker 11: do funny things when they lose their heads.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Oh, no. no. 206. Oh, here it is.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 19:56Speaker 2: Hello. Oh, no. Good afternoon, Sergeant Otis. What do you want, Diamond?
- 20:02Speaker 2: I want to stand out here in the hall and
- 20:03Speaker 2: count the hairs in your five o'clock shadow. Now, let
- 20:06Speaker 2: us in. The lieutenant said it was all right. Okay, comic. Mr. Calamus,
- 20:11Speaker 2: meet Sergeant Otis. How are you? Hello, Sergeant. Otis, make
- 20:14Speaker 2: like a policeman and point out the circumstances in this killing,
- 20:17Speaker 2: will you?
- 20:18Speaker 11: Well, I don't know why I should, Seamus, but if
- 20:19Speaker 11: the lieutenant sent you over, I guess I'll have to.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Two bodies was over there by the window. Lined pretty
- 20:25Speaker 2: close together. Uh-huh. The killer, that Watkins fellow, was standing
- 20:28Speaker 2: about here in the center of the room. With his
- 20:31Speaker 2: back to the kitchen door.
- 20:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:32Speaker 2: He shot them both from about here. Hey, what are
- 20:36Speaker 2: you looking for? Oh, I like to get out on
- 20:38Speaker 2: my hands and knees. It's cooler here.
- 20:40Speaker 13: And it won't do you no good to start looking
- 20:41Speaker 13: for fancy clues.
- 20:42Speaker 2: The guy already confessed. Well, well, well, well. Hey, what
- 20:46Speaker 2: do you got there? Just a wad. So, you got
- 20:49Speaker 2: some wadding from the murder gun. You better give it here. Sure,
- 20:53Speaker 2: but hang on to it, Otis, and be sure to
- 20:54Speaker 2: give it to the lieutenant. Maybe you haven't noticed, but
- 20:57Speaker 2: murder guns don't throw this much wadding unless you can
- 21:00Speaker 2: kill someone with a blank cartridge. What? Don't let it
- 21:03Speaker 2: throw you. Mr. Collins, I've got some things to do.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Can I drop you somewhere?
- 21:07Speaker 4: Well, no thanks.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Now that Mr.
- 21:08Speaker 11: Watkins can't take care of the office, I'd better go
- 21:10Speaker 11: down and check over some things. But I'll keep in
- 21:12Speaker 11: touch with you, Mr.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Diamond. You do that. Now, wait a minute, Diamond. Oh,
- 21:15Speaker 2: stop trying to figure it out, Otis. You'll snap your wig.
- 21:20Speaker 2: I was getting close to something. I wanted to tie
- 21:23Speaker 2: the ends together before it caught up with me. I
- 21:26Speaker 2: had a big fat hunch that Watkins had been framed good.
- 21:29Speaker 2: And the more I found out, the more it looked
- 21:31Speaker 2: like a killer was still loose. The whole setup had
- 21:34Speaker 2: been screwy from the first. Why would a guy lose
- 21:37Speaker 2: his hat and drop his gun in the same place? Or,
- 21:41Speaker 2: if he threw them both away, why wouldn't he burn
- 21:44Speaker 2: the hat and throw the gun in the river? Nobody's
- 21:47Speaker 2: frightened enough to lay them side by side in the gutter.
- 21:51Speaker 2: I learned a lot since this morning, and I was
- 21:52Speaker 2: certain of one thing. The killer tried to make it
- 21:55Speaker 2: look good, but he was an awful amateur. I knew
- 21:59Speaker 2: something else, too. Amateurs can be awfully mean sometimes when
- 22:03Speaker 2: you corner them. I put in a call to Walt
- 22:05Speaker 2: and told him what I had, and then I asked
- 22:07Speaker 2: him to give me half an hour and meet me
- 22:10Speaker 2: at Mrs. Kalmas' flat. I grabbed another cab, and 20
- 22:13Speaker 2: minutes later, I was sitting on a long couch next
- 22:16Speaker 2: to Mrs. Kalmas. It's easy to get that crowded feeling,
- 22:20Speaker 2: even on a long couch. You just both sit on
- 22:24Speaker 2: the same cushion.
- 22:27Speaker 6: Comfy.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Yeah. Uh, what kind of perfume is that?
- 22:33Speaker 2: My sin. Past or future tense?
- 22:37Speaker 6: A rounding second. Who brought you back, Mr.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Diamond? Oh, I, uh, I want to ask a couple
- 22:45Speaker 2: of questions.
- 22:46Speaker 6: Past or future tense?
- 22:48Speaker 2: What time did your husband get in last night?
- 22:51Speaker 6: I told you, about two o'clock.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Why?
- 22:53Speaker 2: Do you know if he knows a girl named Nan Phillips?
- 22:56Speaker 6: I really don't know.
- 22:58Speaker 2: All right, just a few more questions, and then we'll
- 23:01Speaker 2: get back to that perfume.
- 23:02Speaker 6: I'll think of it.
- 23:03Speaker 2: You said you'd been getting along with your husband. Would
- 23:06Speaker 2: you mind explaining that?
- 23:07Speaker 6: Certainly, I like nice things, and he's been buying them
- 23:10Speaker 6: for me.
- 23:10Speaker 2: What's your husband's salary?
- 23:12Speaker 6: About $ 15, 000 a year.
- 23:14Speaker 9: Oh.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Could he afford to buy you these things?
- 23:16Speaker 6: He told me he was getting a raise, and then
- 23:18Speaker 6: he'd gotten a bigger fan. What's this all about?
- 23:21Speaker 4: Maybe I'd better tell you.
- 23:23Speaker 6: Bud, I didn't hear you.
- 23:25Speaker 2: I did.
- 23:25Speaker 6: What are you doing with that gun?
- 23:27Speaker 2: I'm going to use it. I found Mr.
- 23:29Speaker 11: Diamond making passes at my wife, and I shot him.
- 23:32Speaker 6: Are you crazy?
- 23:33Speaker 2: Don't ask him that. He's allowed to start thinking about it.
- 23:36Speaker 2: You can't shoot me and get away with it, Calmus.
- 23:38Speaker 2: What are you going to do with your wife? She
- 23:39Speaker 2: won't back you up. No.
- 23:41Speaker 4: No, I guess she wouldn't. All right, both of you,
- 23:44Speaker 4: get up and walk downstairs to my car.
- 23:46Speaker 6: Bert, what are you doing?
- 23:47Speaker 2: Your husband killed two people last night, Mrs. Calmus. Now
- 23:50Speaker 2: he's going to try and cover because he guessed I
- 23:52Speaker 2: knew how it was done.
- 23:52Speaker 6: You're not going to kill me, too.
- 23:53Speaker 2: It's moving.
- 23:54Speaker 9: Bert, please.
- 23:55Speaker 8: Go on.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Better do as he says.
- 23:59Speaker 7: Why did you kill anyone, Bert?
- 24:00Speaker 4: He wanted to frame his boss.
- 24:02Speaker 2: I'll bet when the company checks, they'll find out he's
- 24:04Speaker 2: had his hand in the pill.
- 24:05Speaker 4: They won't find out, Mr. Diamond.
- 24:07Speaker 2: With Mr.
- 24:08Speaker 11: Watkins' book for murder, I'm next in line for president.
- 24:11Speaker 11: I'll be able to fix the book so it will
- 24:12Speaker 11: look like he took the money, too.
- 24:14Speaker 6: Is that where you got the money for all those
- 24:15Speaker 6: things you've been buying from me?
- 24:17Speaker 2: You shot the man and the girl from the kitchen
- 24:19Speaker 2: with a silencer, didn't you, Bertram?
- 24:21Speaker 4: That's right.
- 24:22Speaker 11: I knew you were onto something when you discovered that
- 24:24Speaker 11: wad from the blank cartridge.
- 24:25Speaker 2: I was onto something a long time before that.
- 24:28Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 24:29Speaker 4: All right. Come on. Over to that gray sedan. And remember,
- 24:32Speaker 4: I've still got this gun in my pocket.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Now, you're an amateur, Bertram.
- 24:36Speaker 5: Is that right?
- 24:37Speaker 2: Sure. I knew you had something to do with it
- 24:40Speaker 2: when we got over to the girl's apartment. I didn't
- 24:42Speaker 2: know what floor it was on, and you looked in
- 24:44Speaker 2: the mailboxes.
- 24:45Speaker 4: That's the best way to find an apartment, isn't it?
- 24:47Speaker 2: Yeah, but not once at any time did anyone mention
- 24:50Speaker 2: the dead girl's name. But you knew it and found
- 24:52Speaker 2: it on the mailbox.
- 24:54Speaker 4: All right, stop right here. Open the door, Jean, and
- 24:57Speaker 4: get in first. The front seat.
- 24:59Speaker 5: Please.
- 24:59Speaker 4: Get in.
- 25:02Speaker 5: All right.
- 25:03Speaker 4: Now you, Mr. Diamond, you're going to drive.
- 25:06Speaker 2: You know, I left my license in my other suit.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Stop stalling.
- 25:11Speaker 2: I had to do something to stall for just a
- 25:12Speaker 2: second because over Bertram's shoulder I spotted a prowl car
- 25:15Speaker 2: sliding up to the curb. And good old Walt was
- 25:18Speaker 2: climbing out. Bertram, would you mind answering just one question?
- 25:23Speaker 4: What is it?
- 25:24Speaker 2: The gun that Watkins thought he killed the man with
- 25:26Speaker 2: was loaded with blanks, wasn't it?
- 25:28Speaker 4: Sure. I killed the guy from the kitchen with a silencer.
- 25:31Speaker 2: The whole thing was rigged, huh? The man and the
- 25:33Speaker 2: girl were supposed to stage that fight... and Watkins was
- 25:36Speaker 2: supposed to shoot the guy with the dummy slug.
- 25:38Speaker 4: You said one question. Now get in the car. All right, Cowliss,
- 25:41Speaker 4: don't move.
- 25:42Speaker 11: What?
- 25:42Speaker 4: Why, you.
- 25:42Speaker 2: That was a close one. You're so right, Walt. Take
- 25:49Speaker 2: his gun. I think you'll find it's the one that
- 25:51Speaker 2: Watkins fired the branks from.
- 25:52Speaker 4: How is he?
- 25:53Speaker 2: On his way. Hey, Bertram.
- 25:55Speaker 4: I'll go call the wagon.
- 25:57Speaker 9: Bertram. Yes?
- 25:59Speaker 2: You want to tie the ends together?
- 26:00Speaker 9: Yes.
- 26:03Speaker 4: I paid the girl and the man to stage the fight.
- 26:08Speaker 11: I told them I wanted to frame George and blackmail him.
- 26:13Speaker 2: So you framed him with a double murder instead. Why?
- 26:17Speaker 4: I'd been stealing money from the company. How'd you know
- 26:23Speaker 4: it was me?
- 26:25Speaker 2: Knowing the girl's name, for one thing, and your wife
- 26:27Speaker 2: told me you'd gotten in about two. You told me
- 26:29Speaker 2: over the phone you went straight home after the fight
- 26:31Speaker 2: in the cafe. The killing took place about one. Watkins
- 26:35Speaker 2: said he'd been at the girl's for five minutes. About
- 26:38Speaker 2: 15 to get to her place, so that meant you
- 26:39Speaker 2: all left the cafe around 12.30. It doesn't take an
- 26:42Speaker 2: hour and a half to get... Hey, Bertram.
- 26:45Speaker 6: John.
- 26:46Speaker 8: Huh?
- 26:47Speaker 6: I don't think Bert can hear you.
- 26:49Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Well, it was a pretty dull story anyway. Well, the
- 27:09Speaker 2: wagon got there, and I briefed Walt on everything that
- 27:11Speaker 2: had happened. They took Mrs. Calamus home and released Watkins.
- 27:16Speaker 2: It was a stinking hot afternoon, and I needed something
- 27:18Speaker 2: cool to bring me down to normal, so I headed
- 27:20Speaker 2: for 975 Park Avenue. A tall lemonade with the mind
- 27:25Speaker 2: of its own, and a courageous redhead with the same gimmick.
- 27:32Speaker 5: Yes?
- 27:33Speaker 6: Oh, good afternoon, Mr.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Diamond. Afternoon, Francis. Miss Asheron?
- 27:37Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 27:37Speaker 2: She's in the study, reading. Thanks, Francis. Oh, how about
- 27:41Speaker 2: something cool?
- 27:42Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 27:42Speaker 5: Right away, sir.
- 27:46Speaker 9: Hi.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Hi. Wow, you look cool enough. That's a nice getup.
- 27:50Speaker 6: You like it?
- 27:51Speaker 2: It's the newest thing. Yeah, I saw it in the magazine.
- 27:55Speaker 2: What do you do if it shrinks? Oh, silly. No, no,
- 27:57Speaker 2: I'm concerned. You might get raided. Don't you like it? Yes, ma'am.
- 28:01Speaker 6: What do you think of me?
- 28:03Speaker 2: Ah, you're adorable. You're beautiful and you're cute.
- 28:05Speaker 6: Hey, that sounds like a song.
- 28:07Speaker 14: Mm-hmm.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Come here.
- 28:09Speaker 4: No, not now.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Sing it.
- 28:10Speaker 6: It's cute.
- 28:10Speaker 2: That's too hot.
- 28:11Speaker 6: I'm rather cool.
