- 0:14Speaker 1: The Little match Girl. It was very cold. The snow fell,
- 0:21Speaker 1: and it was almost dark. It was the last day
- 0:24Speaker 1: of the year. A little match girl was running in
- 0:27Speaker 1: the street. Her name was Gretchen. She had no hat on.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Her feet were bare when she left home. She had
- 0:34Speaker 1: on some big slippers of her mamma's, but they were
- 0:37Speaker 1: so large that she lost them when she ran across
- 0:40Speaker 1: the street. Gretchen had a lot of matches in her
- 0:43Speaker 1: old apron. She had a little bunch in her hand,
- 0:47Speaker 1: but she could not sell her matches. No one would
- 0:50Speaker 1: buy them. Poor little Gretchen. She was cold and hungry.
- 0:56Speaker 1: The snow fell on her curly hair, but she did
- 0:59Speaker 1: not think about that. She saw lights in the houses.
- 1:03Speaker 1: She smelled good things cooking. She said to herself, this
- 1:07Speaker 1: is the last night of the year. Gretchen got colder
- 1:12Speaker 1: and colder. She was afraid to go home. She knew
- 1:16Speaker 1: her Papa would whip her if she did not take
- 1:18Speaker 1: some money to him. It was as cold at home
- 1:21Speaker 1: as in the street. They were too poor to have
- 1:24Speaker 1: a fire. They had to put rags in the windows
- 1:27Speaker 1: to keep out the wind. Gretchen did not even have
- 1:30Speaker 1: a bed. She had to sleep on a pile of rags.
- 1:34Speaker 1: She sat down on a doorstep. Her little hands were
- 1:38Speaker 1: almost frozen. She took a match and lighted it to
- 1:42Speaker 1: warm her hands. The match looked like a little candle.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Gretchen thought she was sitting by a big stove. It
- 1:50Speaker 1: was so bright. She put the match near her feet
- 1:53Speaker 1: to warm them. Then the light went out. She did
- 1:58Speaker 1: not think that she was by the stove any mme.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Gretchen lighted another match. Now she thought she could look
- 2:06Speaker 1: into a room. In this room was a table, a
- 2:10Speaker 1: white cloth and pretty dishes were on the table. There
- 2:13Speaker 1: was a roast turkey too. It was cooked and ready
- 2:17Speaker 1: to eat. The knife and fork were in his back.
- 2:20Speaker 1: The turkey jumped from the dish and ran to the
- 2:23Speaker 1: little girl. The light went out and she was in
- 2:27Speaker 1: the cold and dark again. Gretchen lighted another match. Then
- 2:33Speaker 1: she thought she was sitting by a Christmas tree. Very
- 2:36Speaker 1: many candles were on the tree. It was full of
- 2:39Speaker 1: pretty things. Gretchen put up her little hands. The light
- 2:44Speaker 1: went out. The lights on the Christmas tree went up
- 2:48Speaker 1: up until she saw they were the stars. Then she
- 2:53Speaker 1: saw a starfall. Someone is dying, said the little Gretchen.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Her grandma had been very good to the little girl,
- 3:01Speaker 1: but she was dead. The grandma had said, when a
- 3:05Speaker 1: star falls, someone is going to God. The little girl
- 3:11Speaker 1: lighted another match and made a big light. Gretchen thought
- 3:15Speaker 1: she saw her grandma. She never looked so pretty before,
- 3:19Speaker 1: she looked so sweet and happy. Oh, Grandma said the
- 3:24Speaker 1: little girl, take me. When the light goes out, you
- 3:27Speaker 1: will go away. The stove and the turkey and the
- 3:30Speaker 1: Christmas tree all went away. Then Gretchen lighted a bunch
- 3:35Speaker 1: of matches. She wanted to keep her grandma with her.
- 3:38Speaker 1: The matches made it very light. The grandma took the
- 3:43Speaker 1: little girl in her arms. They went up up where
- 3:46Speaker 1: they would never be cold or hungry. They were with God.
- 3:52Speaker 1: The next day came, some men found a little girl
- 3:56Speaker 1: in the street. She was dead. In her hands were
- 4:00Speaker 1: the burned matches. They said, poor little thing. She froze
- 4:04Speaker 1: to death. They did not know how happy she was
- 4:08Speaker 1: in heaven. End of the Little match Girl by louise
