- 0:08And so we are in chapter 4 of 1 Timothy. We are
- 0:12going to go back to chapter 1 during this message.
- 0:16So just get ready to have a little walk. You
- 0:19guys know how this is. Are you guys ready? Father,
- 0:22I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness
- 0:24and goodness. Thank you, Lord, for your word.
- 0:26Thank you that it does accomplish all that you've
- 0:31set it out to do, that it does not return to
- 0:33you void, that your word is living and active.
- 0:36We thank you that it is everything we need for
- 0:39life and godliness. We thank you that you have
- 0:42clearly defined what it is to be a man and what
- 0:45it is to be a woman, but specifically what it
- 0:48means, what it is to be a man and woman of God,
- 0:50a family of God, to raise up children for you,
- 0:55children of God. Lord, we praise you and thank
- 0:58you for your faithfulness and your goodness.
- 1:00Help us to be a shining light in a very dark
- 1:02world. We praise you. To you be honor and glory
- 1:05forever in Jesus' name. amen so principle number
- 1:08one we are in first timothy chapter four let
- 1:11me let me read first timothy four first before
- 1:13we um before we go into the principles so it
- 1:17says now the spirit expressively says that in
- 1:21the latter time some will depart from the faith
- 1:26by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and
- 1:29teachings of demons, through the insincerity
- 1:32of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid
- 1:36marriage and require abstinence from foods that
- 1:41God created to be received with thanksgiving
- 1:43by those who believe and know the truth. For
- 1:46everything created by God is good, and nothing
- 1:49is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
- 1:53for it is made holy. by the word of God in prayer.
- 1:57If you put these things before the brothers,
- 2:00you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being
- 2:04trained in the words of the faith and of the
- 2:07good doctrine that you have followed. Have nothing
- 2:10to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather, train
- 2:14yourselves for godliness. For while bodily training
- 2:17is of some value, godliness is of value in every
- 2:22way, as it holds promise. for the present life
- 2:26and also for the life to come. The saying is
- 2:29trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance.
- 2:32For to this end, we toil and strive because we
- 2:35have our hope set on the living God, who is the
- 2:39Savior of all people, especially those who believe.
- 2:43Commend and teach these things. Let no one despise
- 2:47you for your youth, but set the believers an
- 2:50example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith.
- 2:55impurity. Until I come, devote yourself to the
- 2:59public reading of scripture, to exhortation,
- 3:03to teaching. Do not neglect the gift which was
- 3:07given you by prophecy when the council of elders
- 3:09laid hands on you. Practice these things. Immerse
- 3:13yourself in them so that all may see your progress.
- 3:17Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching.
- 3:22Persist in this. For by doing so, you will save
- 3:26both yourself and your hearers. What an imperative.
- 3:31What an encouragement that Paul gives. He exhorts
- 3:35Timothy to be one who rightly handles, preaches,
- 3:40teaches, walks, lives, is committed and fully
- 3:45devoted to the word of God. That is the necessity
- 3:49here. So as men, we must commit. To the word
- 3:54of God. Our wives, our children are watching.
- 3:58The world is watching. So the teaching and the
- 4:00schemes of demons continue even today. And the
- 4:03inoculation of false doctrine is Christ's true
- 4:07and faithful doctrine. There is a doctrine. There's
- 4:10one doctrine. One true and real doctrine. The
- 4:13doctrine of Christ. The complete truth of His
- 4:16Word. This is what it says in 2 Peter 2, verse
- 4:201. But false prophets also arose among the people,
- 4:23just as there will be false teachers among you
- 4:27who will secretly bring in destructive heresies,
- 4:30even denying the Master who bought them, bringing
- 4:34upon themselves swift destruction. Isn't it interesting
- 4:38that Peter says the same exact thing that Paul
- 4:41says to Timothy here? Now the Spirit expressively
- 4:45says that in later times. So this is a prophecy
- 4:49that the Holy Spirit is giving Paul to tell Timothy.
- 4:54This is from God himself. The Spirit of God says
- 4:59this. In latter times. What's interesting about
- 5:02this word times is it's a fixed and definite
- 5:06time. What time? Today time. How do we know?
- 5:09Look at the world. Look at the preachers. Look
- 5:13at the teachers. We live in that time now. That's
- 5:17the time. Some. This word some, as I explained
- 5:20to you last week, this word tis means certain
- 5:23ones. Which ones? The ones that were not of the
- 5:26family, who came in as if they were of the family,
- 5:29wolves dressed in sheep's clothing, and they,
- 5:33those ones, will depart. They were never of us.
- 5:36If they had been of us, they would have remained
- 5:38with us. But because they're not of us, they're
- 5:40gone. Eventually they'll leave because they've
- 5:43came in and devoured the sheep and tried to wreck
- 5:46the church and as a result have left the church
- 5:49in a dismantled way. That's the idea. Or they
- 5:52get caught and then they're slain like a bad
- 5:54wolf that they are, right? Slain with the word
- 5:57of God. Now, to this word, some means certain
- 6:00ones will depart, episteme, withdraw oneself.
- 6:04They will withdraw themselves from the faith,
- 6:09from the pistis. The word faith here means gospel.
- 6:13They will withdraw from the sound doctrine of
- 6:16the gospel. But what happens in our day that
- 6:20we live? The day that we live is these men who
- 6:22have withdrawn from the sound doctrine of the
- 6:25gospel have built up churches to teach bad doctrine.
- 6:29And they draw in thousands. And people give thousands
- 6:33of dollars to these people. Because they write
- 6:36a book that we think is Christian, they've got
- 6:39to be believers. I mean, you're promised that
- 6:42if you give $1 ,000, you're going to get that
- 6:46new car. It's only a matter of time if the only
- 6:49new people have been deceived. And to some degree,
- 6:54I can't help but think that this deception is
- 6:56a judgment upon them from God himself, which
- 6:59we will read later on. So these people, these
- 7:03men have departed. have withdrawn themselves
- 7:06from the sound truth of the gospel, and they
- 7:09have devoted. This word devoting means to apply,
- 7:12attach, hold, or cleave oneself to. They have
- 7:17fully committed themselves to deceitful spirits.
- 7:21Like, think about that. This word deceitful means
- 7:24actuated or moved by. It's an attitude of disposition.
- 7:29What are they? actuated or moved by they're actuated
- 7:32and moved by the teachings of demons that's what
- 7:36moves them that's what that's what motivates
- 7:38them to do what they do now these teachings of
- 7:43demons this word teachings is our teachings the
- 7:47demons means teachings disseminated by evil spirits
- 7:51and seducing people from the truth now what we'll
- 7:54read here is that these particular men had said
- 7:57that they need to They need to stop marrying.
- 8:00They need to stop having intimacy with their
- 8:02wives. They need to stop eating food that God
- 8:07has declared clean. Why? Think about Ephesus.
- 8:11What was all over Ephesus? If you stop having
- 8:14sex with your wife, where are you going to go
- 8:16have sex? At the next temple down the road. Because
- 8:19that's what they did. If you stop eating food
- 8:22that God has declared clean, what have you done?
- 8:25You end up being a hypocrite. Because you can't
- 8:28gather with those who eat differently than you.
- 8:30They live in Ephesus. It's a very different type
- 8:34of city than Jerusalem. And so what we end up
- 8:37seeing is they have given themselves over to
- 8:41these teachings of demons. Now what's interesting
- 8:44is that as they've given themselves over to the
- 8:46teachings of demons, through the insincerity
- 8:49of liars, this term, insincerity of liars, means
- 8:53lies. Or false teachings, hypocrisy. They are
- 8:58hypocrites. You call yourself a believer in Jesus,
- 9:01but you live as if you're not. You want to follow
- 9:05the law and deny the grace of God. When in reality,
- 9:09the law is the teacher. The law is the proof
- 9:13that you are lost and desperately wicked. But
- 9:16they commit to the law, not commit to Christ.
- 9:19The fulfillment of the law. whose consciences
- 9:22were seared. This word, conscience, is burned
- 9:25in with a branding iron. Now, how many of you
- 9:28guys ever looked at a cow get burned with a branding
- 9:32iron? Can you make that brand go away? You've
- 9:35got to kill the cow. So the point is that their
- 9:37consciences have been seared with a branding
- 9:41iron that will always be there. They have given
- 9:44themselves over to these bad, evil teachings.
- 9:49Now, How do we know this? Go to 1 Timothy chapter
- 9:521. Why was Paul telling Timothy this? It's a
- 9:56reminder of what he says to Timothy in chapter
- 9:591, verse 5 through 7. Look what it says. The
- 10:03aim of our charge is love. What Paul is doing
- 10:07here in telling Timothy about these evil men,
- 10:11and we know who these evil men are because they're
- 10:13mentioned at the end of chapter 1. Is that our
- 10:18aim for you, Timothy, and for the brothers and
- 10:20sisters in Ephesus is love. And our love that
- 10:24issues from a pure heart and a good conscience
- 10:29and a sincere faith. We're telling you this because
- 10:32it is of a clear conscience that what we're telling
- 10:36you is absolutely true. It is with sincere faith,
- 10:41knowing the gospel, that we share this to you.
- 10:44And then he says in verse 6, Certain persons,
- 10:47by swerving from these, by swerving from what?
- 10:51Love, good conscience, sincere faith, have wandered
- 10:56away into vain discussion, into doctrines of
- 11:00demons. That's what he means here. Into these
- 11:03deceitful, actuated, and moved attitudes. concerning
- 11:09the word of God, desiring to be teachers of the
- 11:12law without understanding either what they are
- 11:15saying or the things about which they make confident
- 11:19assertions. They spoke to the people in Ephesus
- 11:22as if it was factual. You know you need to abstain
- 11:25from sex with your wife. Don't get married. You
- 11:28know you can't eat this type of food. And what
- 11:31Paul does in verse 3, chapter 4, verse 3, he
- 11:34says, These particular men say, who forbid marriage,
- 11:38require abstinence from food? This is a false
- 11:41sense of high moral standard, a self -righteousness
- 11:45by following the law. Look at what I can do.
- 11:50But he says this, but, right, that God created
- 11:54to be received with thanksgiving. These foods
- 11:57that God created, these marriages that God has
- 12:01united, should be received with thanksgiving.
- 12:05The whole point, men, of marriage is to be an
- 12:09example of Christ and his church. Without marriage,
- 12:12what other example will the world see? The first
- 12:16institution that he created was family. The family
- 12:19is necessary for the proclamation of the gospel.
- 12:23Without the family, where does the gospel go?
- 12:26Because families build the family of God. Isn't
- 12:30that interesting? Look what it says. By those
- 12:33who believe and know the truth. That we who know
- 12:37the truth, who believe in Christ, should receive
- 12:40these things with thanksgiving. Verse 4. For
- 12:44everything created by God is good, and nothing
- 12:48is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.
- 12:52Why? For it is made holy by the word of God and
- 12:57prayer. Every wedding that I have done has been...
- 13:01has been clearly articulated through the scripture
- 13:04of Christ and his church, and has been poured
- 13:08out in prayer in that service. When we sit down
- 13:11and eat, we pray. And we praise God for his creation,
- 13:16that he has given us all things. And it says
- 13:18in Genesis, when he had finished the work, he
- 13:21said, it is very good. Why do we call things
- 13:25as if they're bad? Second principle. Faithful
- 13:28men commit to the full gospel and sound doctrine
- 13:32by which they can avoid false and silly doctrine.
- 13:36Now, these verses might be slightly offensive
- 13:40a little bit, and I'm okay with that. So please
- 13:42make sure you understand the heart of why I'm
- 13:44saying what I'm saying, okay? But before we go
- 13:47there, 2 Peter chapter 3. Verse 17 through 18
- 13:50says this. You therefore, beloved, knowing this
- 13:53beforehand, take care that you are not carried
- 13:56away with the error of lawless people and lose
- 14:00your own stability. If you do not stand on the
- 14:04chief cornerstone, Jesus Christ, upon the foundation
- 14:07of the apostles and the prophets, which is the
- 14:10word of God brought to us and given to us on
- 14:13paper, then where else are you going to stand?
- 14:15But on sand. Now. but grow in the grace and knowledge
- 14:19of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be
- 14:22the glory both now and to the day of eternity.
- 14:27Amen. 1 Timothy 4, 6 through 7a. If you put these
- 14:33things, what's these things? The instructions
- 14:36that have been supplied to you. What instructions?
- 14:39Everything that I've talked to you about, Timothy.
- 14:41All the things that you've learned under my mentorship.
- 14:45Everything I've said from chapter 1 to chapter
- 14:484 so far. These things. Supply these things before
- 14:52the brothers. Give them to the brothers. This
- 14:55is what a pastor does. This is what a teacher
- 14:58does. We come before you and we give you these
- 15:01things. And your responsibility is to diligently
- 15:04search them out and prove them. And when you
- 15:07prove them, apply them. Now, if you put these
- 15:11things before the brothers, you will be a good
- 15:14servant. Of Christ Jesus. You hear that? What
- 15:17happens if you don't put these things before
- 15:19the brothers? You're a bad servant. So when I
- 15:23share with you things that are difficult. I have
- 15:26a responsibility to put them there. Especially
- 15:29if I search them out to be true. Based upon all
- 15:31of the study and teaching that I've gone through
- 15:34myself. Now that being said. Let's keep reading.
- 15:37Being trained. And trefo is the word here. Means
- 15:40to educate or form the mind. What's the proof
- 15:44of this? Romans chapter 12, verse 2. Do not be
- 15:48conformed to the pattern of this world, but be
- 15:49transformed by the renewing of your mind. This
- 15:52word training means to educate or form the mind
- 15:57in the words of faith, in the words of the gospel
- 16:02of Christ, in the sound doctrine of Christ. And
- 16:07that's what it says next. And of the good. the
- 16:10teachings of Christ that you followed. You, Timothy,
- 16:14must educate, continue to educate, form the mind
- 16:18in the words of the gospel of Christ and of the
- 16:21sound doctrine, the teachings of Christ that
- 16:24you have followed, that you have committed your
- 16:26life to. This word follow is the word perakal.
- 16:31I knew I was going to mess that up. I do that
- 16:33every time. Every week I've got a Greek word.
- 16:35I'm not even going to say the word because it's
- 16:37not going to come out right now. But this word
- 16:39means conform oneself to. I still want to say
- 16:43it, but I'm not going to. That's my ADD. I see
- 16:46it. I've got to do it, but I'm not going to do
- 16:48it. Anyway, it means to conform. What are you
- 16:50conforming yourself to, Timothy? The gospel and
- 16:54the teachings of Christ have nothing to do with
- 16:57irreverent, profane, silly myths. This word silly,
- 17:01here's where. I'm so sorry. But when I read this,
- 17:06I'm like, oh, Lord, do I? Yes, I have to. This
- 17:11word silly means grandma or old womanish. Now,
- 17:17what? I noticed everybody starts laughing at
- 17:20that. Like, what are you talking about? Well,
- 17:22grandma with the little kids. Grandmom says silly
- 17:26or old womanish things. And the children go,
- 17:29what are you talking about, grandma? That doesn't
- 17:32even make sense. That's because we think differently.
- 17:35So when you're thinking about this issue, he's
- 17:37really getting us to understand that we should
- 17:39have nothing to do with profane or things that
- 17:42don't make sense, right? And myths, this word
- 17:46myths means fiction or falsehood. Now that I'm
- 17:49older and getting older, I know that I'm going
- 17:53to say something to my kids that are going to
- 17:55be silly. I know when I was a youth pastor because
- 17:57of my age, I say stuff and they're going, Pastor
- 18:01Joe, you're just dumb. Like, you don't even know,
- 18:04right? So think of it this way. It's this idea
- 18:09of the big fat Greek wedding. Does Windex really
- 18:12make any sense? So if you ever watched my big
- 18:15fat Greek wedding, they would put Windex on everything.
- 18:18You get a scrape, Windex. You want to clean the
- 18:21countertop, Windex. Everything's Windex. Windex
- 18:23fixed everything. That's silly. Where'd it come
- 18:26from? Grandma. It makes no sense. That's the
- 18:29idea here. So let's move on from that. I figured
- 18:33you would laugh at that. Third principle, men
- 18:35of God fight, contend for the sound doctrine
- 18:38of God by the consistent study of the word and
- 18:42must expose all who contradict it. He must hold
- 18:46firm to the trustworthy word as taught so that
- 18:50he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine
- 18:53and also to rebuke those who contradict it. Titus
- 18:58chapter 1 verse 9. Look what it says in 1 Timothy
- 19:014, 7b to 10. Rather, train yourself for godliness.
- 19:07This phrase, train yourself for godliness, means
- 19:10purpose to exercise vigorously the mind to become
- 19:15godly or to become like Christ. You have a responsibility
- 19:19to exercise vigorously the mind. You've got to
- 19:24spend time in the word. You wonder why Christians
- 19:27walk defeated lives all day long. It's because
- 19:30they haven't spent time in the Word. And then
- 19:33when they look at the Word, they haven't searched
- 19:35it out for a while. Bodily training is of some
- 19:38value. Godliness is of value in every way. Why?
- 19:44Because if the word of God is renewing my mind
- 19:47and if the word of God is really saturating my
- 19:51life, then the stewardship and the care of all
- 19:54things will be lived out. As it holds promise
- 19:59for the present life and also for the life to
- 20:03come. Can you imagine that godliness today is
- 20:07not a waste because of what's to come. What you
- 20:10do today... is going to and is actively impacting
- 20:15your eternity. Like, it's not a waste of time.
- 20:18God doesn't put us on earth here, and then once
- 20:21it's all over, we go, well, he just washes it
- 20:25clean and starts over again. No, he started the
- 20:29process for you in the beginning of time. When
- 20:32he wrote your name in the Lamb's book of life.
- 20:34And then through that time period as he brings
- 20:36you to salvation. And then progressively starts
- 20:39to sanctify you. To make you more like Christ.
- 20:41The scripture says that he will complete the
- 20:45work that he started. You have been predestined
- 20:47to be conformed into the image of his son. You
- 20:51are a work in progress. And he will finish that
- 20:54work when Christ returns. He doesn't come and
- 20:57then start all over again. And wash you clean
- 20:59and just give you everything you wanted. It's
- 21:01not how God works. Now, understanding that, how
- 21:05should you live? How should you be living out
- 21:07your life now? What kind of effort should you
- 21:10be putting in now? Now, godliness is a value
- 21:13in every way as it holds promise for the present
- 21:16life and also for the life to come. This promised
- 21:19life, present and future. The more perfect state
- 21:22of things. The saying. What saying? The saying
- 21:26that's in verse 7 and 8. That saying, the one
- 21:29we just talked about. is trustworthy and deserving
- 21:32of full acceptance. Live now. Work now. Spiritually
- 21:36exercise now. It's not a waste of time. Look
- 21:40what it says this here. For to this end we toil,
- 21:43we labor, and strive, contend. So to this end
- 21:47we labor and contend because we have our hope
- 21:50set on the living God. I love when Paul uses
- 21:54this term, living God. He's not a God who's dead
- 21:58like the rest of the idols and false gods. This
- 22:01is the living God. Like all we do for him now
- 22:04is effective and purposeful. And he is the savior
- 22:08of all people. All what people? Especially, chiefly,
- 22:12those who believe. He saves those who believe.
- 22:16And has commanded... that we must command and
- 22:19teach these things, Paul says, that we should
- 22:24be commanding these things and teaching these
- 22:26things. Now, you guys know, love God, love his
- 22:29word, love his ways, love his things, right?
- 22:31Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
- 22:34them in the name of the Father, Son, and the
- 22:35Holy Spirit. A lot of churches stop there. It
- 22:38doesn't stop there. What we see is surrender,
- 22:41conformity. Conformity. Sanctification. You cannot
- 22:46understand the purpose of the work of the sanctifying
- 22:48work of God unless you are in the word. You must
- 22:51obey. There is not an option here. Teaching them
- 22:54to observe all that I command. Not the things
- 22:58I want or the things I don't want. All that I've
- 23:01commanded you. I can't help but think in Romania
- 23:04that they do this. This is a common understanding
- 23:06in different countries. But here in America,
- 23:09it's not a common teaching. Because all we want
- 23:12to do is tickle ears and make people feel like,
- 23:15oh, God loves me. But Jesus says, if you love
- 23:18me, you obey my commands. This is not an issue
- 23:21of legalism. It's an issue of surrendered heart
- 23:24and life to the purpose of glorifying God in
- 23:26how I live. It's good for you. That's why he
- 23:29says here, train yourself. Exercise vigorously
- 23:33the mind to become godly. Lastly, I can't believe
- 23:38we got this entire chapter done. Praise God.
- 23:41Men of God, keep careful attention to that which
- 23:46is entrusted to them. You must keep careful attention
- 23:49to that which God has entrusted to you. And I'm
- 23:52going to give you some basic things that God
- 23:54has entrusted to you. First and foremost, he's
- 23:56entrusted the gospel to you. The most important
- 23:59thing on the planet, more important than your
- 24:01wife, the gospel of Jesus Christ, the life -giving
- 24:04word of God. There is nothing more important
- 24:07than that. The second, your wife. Take good care
- 24:11of her. Be the example of Christ in the church
- 24:13by being sacrificial to her. And then third,
- 24:17your children. The future of what God has given
- 24:21as a gift to you. Your children are his. He desires
- 24:25godly offspring. So men of God, keep careful
- 24:29attention to which God has entrusted to you.
- 24:32The word of God and the gospel of Christ. Let
- 24:35us hold fast the confession of our hope. without
- 24:38wavering, for he who promised is faithful. What
- 24:42is he faithful to do? Everything that he's promised.
- 24:45You must be careful to care for and contend for
- 24:50what he's entrusted to you. 1 Timothy 4, 12 through
- 24:5316. Let no one despise you. Let no one think
- 24:57little, disdain you for your youth. If you are
- 25:00young, good. Youth has nothing to do with godliness.
- 25:04If you're a godly man, or a godly woman and you're
- 25:07young, be an example of godliness. Because there's
- 25:11a lot of old people that need to see that. Timothy,
- 25:13roughly around 19 to 20 years old, like I've
- 25:16said, he was an example of godliness to the older
- 25:21men in the community. And they said, don't let
- 25:23anyone look down on you, disdain you, or despise
- 25:26you, Timothy, but set the believers an example.
- 25:30And there is no other word in the Greek, I looked
- 25:33them all up, This list is exactly what he means.
- 25:36An example in speech and how I speak. In conduct
- 25:40and how I live. In love and how I give my life
- 25:44for God and his people. In faith and how I contend
- 25:48to the gospel and the doctrine of truth. And
- 25:50in purity and how I live so that no one can say
- 25:53anything about me. Do this, Timothy says, until
- 25:56I come. And then he says, devote. Devote thought
- 25:59and effort, Timothy. To what? to public reading
- 26:04of scripture, of exhortation and teaching. Do
- 26:07not. This is an imperative statement. It's a
- 26:11command. Do not neglect. Amaleo is the word here.
- 26:15Do not be careless with the gift. What gift?
- 26:19The God -given power to discharge the office
- 26:23of an evangelist is the word here. This word
- 26:26gift means that. Do not stop being an evangelist
- 26:30and preaching the full counsel of God's word
- 26:33and the gospel. You have ensue is the word here.
- 26:37You have in you what's in us. God, you have,
- 26:42that word you have means in you. Do not be careless
- 26:46with the gift that is in you, which was given
- 26:49by prophecy. The word prophecy means this, that
- 26:53which comes through and by the gospel. It's not
- 26:56by. Men laying hands on the person and some power
- 27:00comes out and all of a sudden they have received
- 27:02something that they never had before. That's
- 27:04not what it means here. The power of the evangelist
- 27:07comes by the power of the Holy Spirit by which
- 27:10he has been given through the gospel. All things
- 27:14come through Christ. That which comes through
- 27:18and by the gospel. When the council of elders...
- 27:23Presbyterion is the word here. It's where they
- 27:25get the word presbytery from or presbyterians.
- 27:29The council of elders. That's why the elders
- 27:33have a very important role that we play in how
- 27:36we look at, evaluate deeply those who are the
- 27:41elders and the deacons of the church. The church
- 27:44doesn't make that choice. God makes that choice.
- 27:47What do we do? This council of lepers that have
- 27:50been laid, they laid their hands. Epithesis is
- 27:54the word here. They imposed. Imposed what? Imposed
- 27:57the power and the truth of God to Timothy. They
- 28:02have imposed God truth upon him. He says this,
- 28:06Timothy, practice. Attend carefully these things.
- 28:10Immerse yourself in them. Do you hear that, men?
- 28:13How much do you immerse yourself in the word
- 28:17of God? How much time do you spend listening,
- 28:21singing, hearing, writing, thinking about? You'll
- 28:26be like, that's a little bit too much. Man does
- 28:28not live by bread alone, but by every word that
- 28:30comes out of the mouth of God. The very word
- 28:32of God keeps you alive. And you can't devote
- 28:35yourself 15, 20 minutes to that. I'm too busy.
- 28:39There's nothing in your life that's so busy that
- 28:42you can't spend time with God and his word. There's
- 28:45no reason. There's no excuse. You've got 24 hours
- 28:47a day. I don't have enough time. God is giving
- 28:50you enough time. He's giving you 24 hours. And
- 28:52you don't know the day when it's all done. You
- 28:54better get it in now because when the day is
- 28:56over, you ain't getting it in no more. Practice
- 28:59is done. Practice. Attend carefully to these
- 29:02things. Immerse yourselves in them. Why? So that
- 29:05all may see your progress. You hear that? That
- 29:09all may see the sanctifying work of God in your
- 29:12life. So it's not, I don't do this because I
- 29:15want to feel good. I'm doing this so others can
- 29:17see. When others see, others may want. Very interesting.
- 29:22This word progress means make known. Make known
- 29:25what? The effectual work of the word of God.
- 29:30Make known. Now, keep a close watch. Give attention
- 29:34to what? Yourself. Watch yourself, Timothy. Pay
- 29:38attention. Keep the word. That's what he says
- 29:41here. Keep watch. On yourself and on the teaching.
- 29:45What teaching? That which has been taught. The
- 29:47doctrine that you've been given. Not some new
- 29:50doctrine. There's no new truth coming. It's what
- 29:53you've been given now through the word. And then
- 29:55he says this. Persist in this. In what? In the
- 30:01work of the teaching of the doctrine that you've
- 30:03been given. For by so doing, you will save both
- 30:07yourself. And your hearers, what's he mean you
- 30:09will save? The word means to maintain, to keep,
- 30:12to live in such a way that your life is so impactful
- 30:17that your hearers will be impacted. In other
- 30:20words, the effectual work of God will not be
- 30:24a waste. And it's never a waste. Now, so as men,
- 30:28we have a high responsibility. And as men of
- 30:32God and preachers, we have the greatest responsibility
- 30:35within the church. And so one of the things I
- 30:38want you to continue to hear over this next year,
- 30:40as men and women of God, as we really look at
- 30:43the importance of biblical manhood, biblical
- 30:45womanhood, get this basic, simple motto deep
- 30:49down. Love God, love his word, love his ways,
- 30:54and love his things. When you can do that, you
- 30:58will continue to walk in a way that honors him.
- 31:01You have to love his word. You love his word,
- 31:04you will love to live. When you love to live
- 31:07His ways, then you will love and steward His
- 31:10things. Father, I want to thank you so much for
- 31:12your faithfulness and goodness. We praise you
- 31:15for your word. We praise you that you are actively
- 31:18working in the hearts and the lives of your people
- 31:22to conform us in the image of the living Son
- 31:24of God. We praise you and thank you in Jesus'
- 31:27name. Amen.
