- 0:18Speaker 1: Return to Glory Podcast.
- 0:19Speaker 2: It's February twelve, Valentine's Day week. I am recovering getting
- 0:27Speaker 2: over a cold.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Austin.
- 0:29Speaker 2: We did lay a couple of days getting over a cold.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Dak is not on tonight, and Nebraska's down. I mean
- 0:35Speaker 1: that I don't know about you, but everyone I know
- 0:37Speaker 1: is getting sick.
- 0:39Speaker 2: It's been a bloodbath out here, and I finally on
- 0:42Speaker 2: antibiotic to kill off all my craft that's been going on.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It's been a couple of weeks now for myself. But
- 0:49Speaker 2: I'm starting to feel better here in the past couple
- 0:51Speaker 2: of days, which is good, which is what that's supposed
- 0:54Speaker 2: to do.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Mm hmm. You're at least talking today, that's good. We're
- 0:59Speaker 1: supposed to cord Monday and my voice was yeah, it was.
- 1:05Speaker 1: It was not recordable, not good for the.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Mic middle of February, and everyone's sick. I guess that
- 1:14Speaker 2: makes sense. We got our first one of our first
- 1:17Speaker 2: pretty big snows today.
- 1:20Speaker 1: This is the only measurable snow we've had in Omaha.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yeah, like especially, it's all all that we've had so
- 1:26Speaker 2: far this year. So we're just getting the winter, all
- 1:29Speaker 2: the colds and sicknesses of snow in the middle of
- 1:31Speaker 2: you where you gotta love that. Thanks groundhog.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Did he see a shadow? I didn't even look to
- 1:38Speaker 1: see what Putsatani Fellows up to these days.
- 1:41Speaker 2: He whatever it was, it made longer winter.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I mean he saw that means he saw his shadow.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I know, it's like reverse what you would think.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Yes, oh so well. I mean, if it's more of
- 1:58Speaker 1: the winter we've currently had, it's not that bad. I said,
- 2:00Speaker 1: I wore shorts on Christmas Day, so true.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Pretty in the Husker sports world, a lot of a
- 2:08Speaker 2: lot of podcasts, a lot of news right now is
- 2:10Speaker 2: going through our our coaching staff and kind of looking
- 2:13Speaker 2: at that a little more detailed and giving their thoughts
- 2:15Speaker 2: on it. So I thought we'd do the same thing today.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I think it's worth worth pointing out some of those
- 2:22Speaker 2: new coaches and new faces that we have Nebraska basketball here.
- 2:27Speaker 2: We are just right in the thick of the bubble
- 2:31Speaker 2: like we were last year. We are, we are there,
- 2:34Speaker 2: we're currently in so there's a lot to go through there.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Uh do Let's start off with a little bit of
- 2:40Speaker 2: softball baseball introduction talk, since I guess it's here. They
- 2:51Speaker 2: played their first game already on February sixth. They're They're
- 2:55Speaker 2: five games in. They are three and two. They are
- 3:00Speaker 2: ranked number nineteen in the country. In the first polls,
- 3:03Speaker 2: they took down number six Tennessee to open the year.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Jordi Ball is back and pitching for the Huskers after
- 3:10Speaker 2: her injury. We have slipped up, slipped up for past
- 3:14Speaker 2: two games against Mississippi State and Texas Tech, both are ranked,
- 3:18Speaker 2: but two close losses there this last weekend. I mean,
- 3:24Speaker 2: the softball team was has been solid, right, We've been decent.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Last year, Jordi Ball comes in and unfortunately get a
- 3:35Speaker 2: season long injury and they kind of put a damper
- 3:37Speaker 2: on things for the rest of the year.
- 3:41Speaker 1: This year, there's some preseason hype.
- 3:45Speaker 2: There's some hope for the softball team.
- 3:49Speaker 1: You know, the Big Ten Conference is traditionally.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Average I would say at baseball, or below average at
- 3:56Speaker 2: baseball and softball. So Nebraska right now and especially in softball,
- 4:02Speaker 2: but baseball too. Here when we get to him in
- 4:04Speaker 2: a second, we're good, question mark.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I mean people think we're gonna be good. I mean,
- 4:12Speaker 1: the Big ten's a little bit better now that they
- 4:14Speaker 1: have Oregon, UCLA, USC some of those warmer schools. But yeah,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I mean Michigan has been good for baseball, but there
- 4:25Speaker 1: was a lot of hype last year until Jordi got hurt.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I don't know if you remember, just the season ticket sales,
- 4:30Speaker 1: like they sold out immediately. Not quite the same energy
- 4:33Speaker 1: this year, but yeah, that was a I'm excited for it.
- 4:40Speaker 1: It feels delayed. Last year was a good rush because
- 4:44Speaker 1: you know, we got Dilan Royal and then Jordie comes home.
- 4:46Speaker 1: It's like, oh, baby, Nebraska's back. Here we go. But
- 4:52Speaker 1: I'm struggling to shift gears to baseball and softball because
- 4:55Speaker 1: it just snowed a tough that it's a summer sport,
- 4:58Speaker 1: even though college I think think gets done too early.
- 5:02Speaker 1: It's not like I don't know about you, but every
- 5:05Speaker 1: college game I went to is always kind of cold out.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I never went to the Ones in May because that
- 5:09Speaker 1: was during finals week in the series.
- 5:14Speaker 2: It is the ironic time to start, as we began
- 5:16Speaker 2: talking about how we're just starting winner and then baseball
- 5:20Speaker 2: and softball starting up. Now, a lot of these earlier
- 5:23Speaker 2: games are not local has expected. The baseball team does
- 5:28Speaker 2: kick off on Valentine's game on Friday, Agains you see
- 5:33Speaker 2: Irvine and then they take on Vanderbilt on Saturday in
- 5:37Speaker 2: San Diego State on Sunday. Baseball teams also in the
- 5:40Speaker 2: top twenty five preseason Ranked number twenty four in the country,
- 5:45Speaker 2: they are projected to win the Big Ten from the
- 5:48Speaker 2: different people's preseason polls that I've been seeing. Once again,
- 5:52Speaker 2: coming off a very strong year, I would say last year,
- 5:55Speaker 2: we're still looking to get back to the College World
- 5:57Speaker 2: Series for the first time in quite some time.
- 6:01Speaker 1: It mean, it's tough.
- 6:01Speaker 2: There's sixteen region regionals, there's sixteen hosts. You know, you'd
- 6:07Speaker 2: like to host one to give yourself a better chance
- 6:09Speaker 2: than you got to win a super regional and then
- 6:12Speaker 2: and you know it, if you want to think of it,
- 6:15Speaker 2: kind of like college basketball, right, I mean, there are
- 6:18Speaker 2: sixty four teams that get in, but depending on your seed,
- 6:22Speaker 2: it's it's tough to get through all of that.
- 6:24Speaker 1: So the baseball team's got a lot of hype.
- 6:26Speaker 2: I I guess myself this year getting to know the
- 6:29Speaker 2: team more than I have in the past, just because
- 6:32Speaker 2: of the potential that that they do have.
- 6:35Speaker 1: In starting preseason rank is it's big. Coach Bolt's done
- 6:40Speaker 1: really well. Uh and you look at our schedule again,
- 6:44Speaker 1: I'm not a baseball excerpt. By any means, I'll watch.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I'll watch and listen to Nebraska baseball. And that's the
- 6:49Speaker 1: extent I'm not. I don't know what good college baseball
- 6:53Speaker 1: is until the World Series. It's like, oh yeah, but
- 6:56Speaker 1: it's always kind of the same names. But out of
- 6:59Speaker 1: our sixty ish games this year, I guess how many
- 7:01Speaker 1: ranked opponents preseason ranked opponents we play.
- 7:05Speaker 2: For games I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go. Well, yes, series,
- 7:10Speaker 2: I'm gonna go. There's two teams on our schedule.
- 7:12Speaker 1: There's one and as Vanderbilt we play them Saturday. There
- 7:16Speaker 1: are no preseason ranks teams on our schedule, so I
- 7:24Speaker 1: win in the Big Ten seems reasonable, I mean, if
- 7:27Speaker 1: you're going based off of the preseason rank, unless if
- 7:33Speaker 1: they don't add those numbers to the schedule yet. But
- 7:35Speaker 1: I don't know why they wouldn't. Here's what I appreciate.
- 7:42Speaker 2: And I know that you don't play as many games
- 7:44Speaker 2: in well football for sure, but basketball. We have a
- 7:48Speaker 2: home and home with k State, with Kansas and with Creighton. Yeah,
- 7:56Speaker 2: it's local, it's those are I will enjoy watching those games.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I don't know we've said that about football. I guess
- 8:03Speaker 2: is can we can can our non can we play
- 8:05Speaker 2: some these more local rivalry type teams like I appreciate
- 8:09Speaker 2: that from college baseball scheduling that way. I know there's
- 8:13Speaker 2: a lot more games, but it's more intriguing than playing,
- 8:17Speaker 2: you know, a random Arizona team like.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Yep, and it's fun, especially like in Omaha. It's like
- 8:25Speaker 1: I can go to the UNO well, I guess this year,
- 8:28Speaker 1: I think they're in Lincoln. But last year I went
- 8:29Speaker 1: to the un O Omaha game, and this year I
- 8:32Speaker 1: could go to the Creighton in Nebraska game in Omaha,
- 8:35Speaker 1: I don't. And it's like a Tuesday night, you know,
- 8:36Speaker 1: I don't need to take off work early to get
- 8:39Speaker 1: down there in park. It's just it's kind of nice.
- 8:46Speaker 2: And that's our preseason talk on baseball. I'll be honest,
- 8:48Speaker 2: I don't know many of the players. We did to
- 8:52Speaker 2: a forty and twenty two last year, and a lot
- 8:57Speaker 2: of a lot of those girls, A lot of those
- 8:59Speaker 2: players came back. We made a regional, we won the
- 9:03Speaker 2: Big Ten tournament. It looks like maybe eight of the
- 9:07Speaker 2: nine starters could be back, so there's a lot of returners.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I think pitching is the question mark. And on on
- 9:15Speaker 2: what we might have coming back there. But we have
- 9:19Speaker 2: Rob Childers as our pitching coach. Like that's that's good
- 9:22Speaker 2: a name that we trust.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Right, I don't know, I really like. I don't know
- 9:28Speaker 1: about you, but I like listening to Nebraska baseball on
- 9:31Speaker 1: the radio. I don't know if I really enjoy watching
- 9:33Speaker 1: it on TV. But it's one of those things it's
- 9:36Speaker 1: nice to have around. Remember I'm driving around in the spring,
- 9:38Speaker 1: I'll just throw it on the radio. It's kind of nice.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I'm glad it's back. Hopefully the softball team does really
- 9:43Speaker 1: well too, because that'd be freaking sweet if we could
- 9:45Speaker 1: just Oh, I just wants to be good at something again,
- 9:48Speaker 1: you know anything.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Yeah, another quick shout out here at the top super
- 9:55Speaker 2: Bowl cam, Jurgen's gates, let's go. Yeah, we throw o'shaun
- 10:04Speaker 2: matthis in there, but three three former Huskers, all winning
- 10:09Speaker 2: a ring cam. Obviously being from my hometown or close
- 10:14Speaker 2: to my hometown. I guess Pickrol at my high school
- 10:16Speaker 2: that I went to in Theatress and then you know,
- 10:19Speaker 2: moving on Nebraska, and then it was on Jimmy fallon
- 10:23Speaker 2: last night.
- 10:26Speaker 1: It's pretty neat.
- 10:26Speaker 2: It's pretty cool to see and a pretty awesome honor
- 10:31Speaker 2: obviously to win a super Bowl champion ship. I mean,
- 10:34Speaker 2: it's it's a lot and Eagles. I mean, it wasn't
- 10:37Speaker 2: like it was a oh boy, tough squeak. It was
- 10:41Speaker 2: a they just kicked the Chiefs ass. And that was
- 10:44Speaker 2: something that you know, I heard and maybe thought, Okay,
- 10:48Speaker 2: that could happen.
- 10:49Speaker 1: But now against Mahomes, I'm like, I'm not gonna do
- 10:52Speaker 1: it until I'm proven wrong.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Mahomes or the Chiefs in general. Like like someone was asking,
- 11:00Speaker 2: what does what you worked down?
- 11:01Speaker 1: The position?
- 11:02Speaker 2: Right? What positions do the Chiefs have an advantage? And
- 11:06Speaker 2: maybe you could argue quarterback going into the game. Some
- 11:09Speaker 2: maybe the last of the game are saying not but
- 11:12Speaker 2: like quarterback probably was the one obvious one. Other than that,
- 11:15Speaker 2: I don't I don't know where you would go. But
- 11:18Speaker 2: my answer was that I I don't know. But they
- 11:20Speaker 2: win like they know how to win. They find a
- 11:23Speaker 2: way to win, and there's no denying that out. I mean,
- 11:27Speaker 2: the game didn't they didn't win the game, But as
- 11:29Speaker 2: far as getting to that point, their team was not great.
- 11:31Speaker 2: They weren't great last year.
- 11:33Speaker 1: No, I agree, there's something to say. They definitely overachieved
- 11:38Speaker 1: this year and but they got absolutely slaughtered. I mean,
- 11:43Speaker 1: the only reason it doesn't look as bad as it
- 11:45Speaker 1: do is because the Eagles are like, there's six minutes left,
- 11:48Speaker 1: we have a thirty four point lead, We're definitely stepping
- 11:51Speaker 1: off the gas.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Nothing. It was I looked up as a team ever
- 11:56Speaker 2: been shut out in the Super Bowl and the answer
- 11:58Speaker 2: to that's no.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Yeah, for nothing, but like eight minutes left in the
- 12:01Speaker 1: fourth or something like. I mean, it was killer. Also,
- 12:09Speaker 1: though I will say the Chiefs D line did hold
- 12:11Speaker 1: Saquon to whatever was forty fifty seven yards forty seven yards,
- 12:16Speaker 1: and there's just a D line coach will be our
- 12:19Speaker 1: D line coach. So that's something. Commercial halftime show. I
- 12:27Speaker 1: like the halftime show. I don't. I'm not, you know,
- 12:29Speaker 1: I'm not a big Kendrick guy. But I thought it
- 12:31Speaker 1: was fun. As far as best commercial, there wasn't really any.
- 12:37Speaker 1: The Matt Damon one, I guess with Lionel Messi or no,
- 12:41Speaker 1: I was David Beckham, Sorry, David Beckham. I thought that
- 12:43Speaker 1: was pretty good.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Yep, yeah, And I'll be honest, I didn't watch too much.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Too many of the commercials are paid too close of attention.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Not the halftime show. I'm like not, it wasn't like
- 12:52Speaker 2: the best one ever. And I'm not a big Kendrick
- 12:56Speaker 2: Lamar guy. I know most of his songs. Have heard
- 12:59Speaker 2: of him at least, but I thought there was from
- 13:02Speaker 2: what I heard of people at the game, There's was
- 13:04Speaker 2: just a lot going on throughout the whole field. It
- 13:08Speaker 2: wasn't like it was a very elaborate setup they but
- 13:14Speaker 2: they kept they kept it very everything was moving constantly.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I guess the show was so out they did a
- 13:23Speaker 2: good job there. Yeah, nothing called six out of ten
- 13:27Speaker 2: like I mean.
- 13:28Speaker 1: As far as a watching experience, I'm not a Chiefs fan.
- 13:32Speaker 1: I watched it. I was in Kansas City. I watched
- 13:34Speaker 1: it at a watch party. The person who hosted had
- 13:38Speaker 1: a banner hanging up in their house Chiefs three times
- 13:41Speaker 1: super Bowl or three p Super Bowl fifty four or
- 13:45Speaker 1: whatever it was Champions And every quarter I was basically
- 13:53Speaker 1: we did like one of those where you buy the
- 13:55Speaker 1: squares yep, and every quarter I was basically had they
- 14:00Speaker 1: just stop the quarter like a minute sooner, I would
- 14:04Speaker 1: have won on like two of the four quarters or something.
- 14:07Speaker 1: So that was a little frustrating. But the game suck
- 14:10Speaker 1: to watch. It was funny to watch just the Chiefs
- 14:12Speaker 1: fans and disbelief as DeAndre Hopkins drops an eleven yard
- 14:17Speaker 1: you know, first down. It was pretty hilarious, just the
- 14:20Speaker 1: disbelief in their face that they're getting absolutely slaughtered. That's
- 14:24Speaker 1: awesome stat that if you looked at just the first
- 14:27Speaker 1: three quarters of games, Patrick mahomes performance by basically any
- 14:30Speaker 1: statistic measure, is the worst performance from any quarterback in
- 14:33Speaker 1: this season. Oh the super Bowl.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Man by Mahomes to you at least had that experience
- 14:43Speaker 2: of watching it with some Chiefs fans, because that was
- 14:45Speaker 2: the one thing that I missed was well we didn't
- 14:49Speaker 2: have any diehard Chiefs fans, and I know quite a few,
- 14:53Speaker 2: but none were just at the place that I was watching,
- 14:55Speaker 2: and that would have been the fun part is just
- 14:58Speaker 2: to shame them the whole game.
- 15:01Speaker 1: We loved that halftime and it sounds like a lot
- 15:03Speaker 1: of people left after us because we drove home that night.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Oh man, it was just hilarious, just the you know,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and then they got that first The refs called that
- 15:14Speaker 1: it was a pretty soft a J. Brown pass interference.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Offensive pass interference. All right, it's not an unwarranted cult,
- 15:21Speaker 1: but they were like, oh, man, look out, the refs
- 15:23Speaker 1: are helping the chiefs again. Oh we're gonna and then
- 15:27Speaker 1: oh it was good. You know, it's good to humble
- 15:32Speaker 1: once in a while. It is.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Okay, let's bubble talk, baby, bubble, let's do bubble. Let's
- 15:45Speaker 2: look where we're at. And this is what I love.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I will say this over the past two years, obviously
- 15:53Speaker 2: both years we've been in the bubble, we should mention
- 15:56Speaker 2: big win at home against Ohio State on Monday Sunday,
- 16:02Speaker 2: big game against Maryland at home. Who is now ranked
- 16:05Speaker 2: tomorrow on Thursday? Three games? Does it maybe out of
- 16:15Speaker 2: our last seven that That's what I'm kind of thinking.
- 16:22Speaker 2: But we're right there, like we're right in the middle
- 16:25Speaker 2: of the bubble. There's I don't even know how many
- 16:30Speaker 2: brackets are they're out there.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Well, this is okay.
- 16:32Speaker 2: I'll just say what I'm looking at here. Bracketmatrix dot
- 16:37Speaker 2: Com is what I like to go to. And if
- 16:42Speaker 2: you are looking and you see probably follow your favorite
- 16:45Speaker 2: stuff on Twitter, on Facebook, Instagram, whatever you look at
- 16:49Speaker 2: and you have, you know, you see the bracketologists. Nebraska
- 16:52Speaker 2: media people are retweeting, posting stuff. You know, some people
- 16:56Speaker 2: like them very number based, and people like just.
- 16:59Speaker 1: The I test all of that.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Well what I like is all of that but combined
- 17:03Speaker 2: into one. And Bracket Matrix does that. They every bracket
- 17:08Speaker 2: that's out there on the internet, they put on their
- 17:12Speaker 2: site and they put the date that it's updated on,
- 17:16Speaker 2: and they put you know, the common ones, all the ways,
- 17:19Speaker 2: the ones that you've probably never heard of, and they
- 17:22Speaker 2: do a really good job. They put your couple of
- 17:26Speaker 2: more popular ones at the beginning. They highlight the highest
- 17:30Speaker 2: seed that your team is, the lowest seed. We are currently,
- 17:34Speaker 2: as an average on in one hundred and eight brackets,
- 17:38Speaker 2: we are averaging a nine point nine to nine seeds,
- 17:41Speaker 2: so a ten seed. We are in one hundred and
- 17:44Speaker 2: seven of the one hundred and eight and the one
- 17:48Speaker 2: that we are not in is I believe I saw this.
- 17:52Speaker 2: It was not updated after the Ohio State game. So
- 17:58Speaker 2: that being said, right now, how we're in, you know,
- 18:01Speaker 2: given the situation, given people think that is left on
- 18:05Speaker 2: our schedule, we're in and I seed is a nine seed,
- 18:10Speaker 2: low seed is in eleven. It's what all these brackets have.
- 18:13Speaker 2: That's this is the one I like looking at the most,
- 18:15Speaker 2: because you do you get to see the range, the
- 18:19Speaker 2: variance of what people where people think you're at. And
- 18:21Speaker 2: then on top of that, like if you're in one
- 18:23Speaker 2: hundred and seven of one hundred and eight, like you're
- 18:25Speaker 2: gonna be in, You're gonna be in on selection Sunday.
- 18:29Speaker 1: It I probably agree three of the seven as long
- 18:33Speaker 1: as we don't get absolutely obliterated in those other four,
- 18:37Speaker 1: we're probably in. It would just it would be stillar
- 18:44Speaker 1: if we just closed out the year like we have
- 18:47Speaker 1: every year with Frek Hoiberg, with a little run. Two
- 18:52Speaker 1: ranked opponents left at this point Michigan, Maryland, and I mean,
- 19:00Speaker 1: our games have been close, like we're not there. That's
- 19:04Speaker 1: here's my concern is, I don't think it's elder all.
- 19:07Speaker 1: The possibility that we go on another you know, six
- 19:11Speaker 1: and or like a one in six stretch, because we're
- 19:15Speaker 1: not killing anyone, well, that would not put us in.
- 19:19Speaker 1: I don't think. I don't think so either. But outside
- 19:23Speaker 1: of Washington, which we were trailing at the end of
- 19:26Speaker 1: the first half and then Washington basically ran out of
- 19:29Speaker 1: juice and our three pointer found its way. I don't
- 19:32Speaker 1: know if it's three pointer, but we're just shooting found
- 19:34Speaker 1: its way. I mean I'm a little worried that we
- 19:39Speaker 1: could because Oregon we won seventy seven to seventy one,
- 19:43Speaker 1: Ohio State, seventy nine to seventy one Illinois and overtime,
- 19:47Speaker 1: and then all of our losses that six stretch, we
- 19:49Speaker 1: had a lot like five of them within five points.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Well here, I mean, here's the thing we said with
- 19:56Speaker 2: the Big ten, it's competitive every day an out and
- 20:01Speaker 2: we've gotten killed in a few games. But you're looking
- 20:05Speaker 2: at these teams that that that those were by, like
- 20:07Speaker 2: these teams are kind of stretching themselves out perdue. You know,
- 20:13Speaker 2: Michigan State UCLA is playing hot again. We actually beat them,
- 20:18Speaker 2: so we do. We know that we're playing competitive games
- 20:25Speaker 2: every night and that's not going to change. I don't
- 20:28Speaker 2: think I don't expect us to go and blow out
- 20:30Speaker 2: Penn stayed on the road, like we're just not going
- 20:32Speaker 2: to do that.
- 20:33Speaker 1: But we got to find a way to win three
- 20:35Speaker 1: our two ranked opponents ranked currently our home games, which
- 20:40Speaker 1: is good. We have four of our home games, so
- 20:43Speaker 1: I mean, you win two home games and maybe still
- 20:45Speaker 1: one on the road. Ideally, you win four home games,
- 20:48Speaker 1: you're locked. All we have to do is went at
- 20:49Speaker 1: home that's all we have to do, which we've done
- 20:51Speaker 1: really well at.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Another thing to point out, and you know, as we're
- 20:57Speaker 2: looking at the rest of our schedule, which I guess
- 20:59Speaker 2: we'll read that off here cause you mentioned it, Maryland
- 21:02Speaker 2: at home, We go to Northwestern and Penn State next week.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Then the week after that we host Michigan and Minnesota,
- 21:09Speaker 2: and then we finish off at Iowa State and then
- 21:12Speaker 2: hosting Iowa on March ninth. When the Big Ten Tournament follows,
- 21:16Speaker 2: the top fourteen teams get in. The bottom four will
- 21:20Speaker 2: be left out. Right now, we're sitting eight. It's pretty tight,
- 21:25Speaker 2: but you know, you win three of those games, you're
- 21:28Speaker 2: gonna be in the Big Ten tournament as well, so
- 21:30Speaker 2: you're gonna get another game there or more.
- 21:34Speaker 1: So that's what we got left.
- 21:36Speaker 2: And as we're counting down those games. The other site
- 21:40Speaker 2: that I like to look at is team rankings dot Com.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Another really good sour set had a lot of stats
- 21:45Speaker 2: on it, which is right down our rally. But they
- 21:48Speaker 2: do they break down the bubble and you're percentages by
- 21:55Speaker 2: a bunch of different things. So they have us an
- 21:57Speaker 2: eighty eight percent chance right now to make the tournament
- 22:02Speaker 2: most likely seed being a ten seed, so that that
- 22:04Speaker 2: that checks out. That's in line. Here's what I like
- 22:07Speaker 2: that they do. They update this every day. They have
- 22:10Speaker 2: an odds to make the NCAA tournament by win total.
- 22:14Speaker 2: So right now we're sixteen and eight. They basically have
- 22:17Speaker 2: all their scenarios in math generated behind the scenes that say,
- 22:19Speaker 2: if you get two x amount of wins, you have
- 22:23Speaker 2: this percentage chance to get in. So, you know, winning
- 22:25Speaker 2: three out of the seven that puts in nineteen that
- 22:28Speaker 2: gives us, according to them, an eighty eight percent chance
- 22:30Speaker 2: to get in, which is right where we're at. You
- 22:34Speaker 2: get four wins, you get the twenty wins, you're at
- 22:36Speaker 2: a ninety eight percent chance, so and everything higher than that,
- 22:40Speaker 2: you know, feace for itself. You get two more wins,
- 22:45Speaker 2: you're still looking at fifty seven percent chance according to them,
- 22:50Speaker 2: which is interesting, but you don't want to put that
- 22:53Speaker 2: in jeopardy. I don't think you want to for sure
- 22:55Speaker 2: win three of them four like you said, or more.
- 22:59Speaker 2: You also are moving up in the seedings too when
- 23:02Speaker 2: you do that, which I think if you ask Husker fans,
- 23:06Speaker 2: they would rather probably not be a nine seed or
- 23:08Speaker 2: ten seed versus actually getting a seven or six if
- 23:10Speaker 2: we can get up there if we keep winning.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm looking at so. I mean, I'm trying to
- 23:21Speaker 1: figure out what seed do I want. Obviously I don't
- 23:23Speaker 1: want a nine seed just because that puts you in
- 23:25Speaker 1: the one seed bracket. But it looks like Wichita is
- 23:31Speaker 1: a host city for a ten seed, very drivable. Milwaukee
- 23:35Speaker 1: is also another host seed for ten seed. So ten
- 23:39Speaker 1: seed team is pretty sweet even though you're in the
- 23:42Speaker 1: two seed bracket. If we could get up six, six
- 23:45Speaker 1: or seven, that would be ideal. But I don't know
- 23:47Speaker 1: if that would happen. Yeah, I I don't know.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I mean, I get the argument of not being by
- 23:54Speaker 2: a one seed or or two seed whatever. I just
- 23:57Speaker 2: think we want to win games.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Oh I agree, I'm not Yeah, you're not. You're not
- 24:01Speaker 1: going to gain the system to try to get out
- 24:03Speaker 1: of it, right, But six seed would be ideal. I
- 24:07Speaker 1: mean that that would be best case scenario. If it's
- 24:12Speaker 1: a difference between a ten and a seven, I don't
- 24:13Speaker 1: care eight and nine. It's I want to be a
- 24:17Speaker 1: ten to seven or six. I don't want to be
- 24:19Speaker 1: here eight and nine. I really don't want to play
- 24:21Speaker 1: the one seed round two.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Me if you want to look to one other thing
- 24:27Speaker 2: right now in the Big ten, there's a big cutoff
- 24:31Speaker 2: after team number seven, that that being Illinois. So I
- 24:33Speaker 2: mean it drops from nine to six to Oregon, who's
- 24:36Speaker 2: six and or Ohio State six and seven. So are
- 24:40Speaker 2: we Oregon six and eight? And I mean there's a
- 24:43Speaker 2: big still jumble the bunch of teams there. The good
- 24:45Speaker 2: news is the teams that we are playing to.
- 24:47Speaker 1: End the year. Michigan's playing well.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Michigan's at the top but in Maryland, but the other
- 24:55Speaker 2: ones are below us, so that work star our advantage. Again,
- 25:00Speaker 2: site has us at nineteen point four projected wins overall,
- 25:03Speaker 2: so again sitting in a good spot. But we have
- 25:06Speaker 2: to stay on edge. You know, if you're Fred Hoiberg,
- 25:10Speaker 2: if you're the players, you have to come out every
- 25:13Speaker 2: game like it's your last of the season, because they do.
- 25:17Speaker 2: They all matter.
- 25:17Speaker 1: At this point, we're winning the games because our energy
- 25:20Speaker 1: on defense and Bryce Willims has been able to get
- 25:22Speaker 1: to the line. That's that's how we're going to win
- 25:25Speaker 1: the games. That's how we have to keep winning the
- 25:26Speaker 1: games correct. And I will say before we move on
- 25:29Speaker 1: for mens, Creighton's is going to be in and I
- 25:32Speaker 1: don't know if you're following Uno probably going to win
- 25:35Speaker 1: the seventh League.
- 25:36Speaker 2: I've seen them in the sixteen seed about every single
- 25:39Speaker 2: bracket that I keep looking at, we could have all
- 25:41Speaker 2: three teams in. Let's just look out of the one
- 25:45Speaker 2: hundred and eight brackets you and O is an eighty
- 25:48Speaker 2: of the one hundred and eight.
- 25:49Speaker 1: That's pretty good in the Summing League.
- 25:50Speaker 2: So they are definitely the favorites right now to win
- 25:52Speaker 2: their conference tournament. And then Creighton, since you mentioned them,
- 25:57Speaker 2: they are currently as they're in all bracket projected brackets,
- 26:01Speaker 2: they're sitting at a seventh seed right now on average.
- 26:06Speaker 2: The matchup that I saw in a couple of them
- 26:09Speaker 2: was US against the Yukon. I like that'd be kind
- 26:11Speaker 2: of funny.
- 26:12Speaker 1: That would be funny.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Well, gosh, all right, anymore bubble talk. Well, we'll be
- 26:20Speaker 2: talking bubble every episode from here on out.
- 26:21Speaker 1: I guarantee it. I don't think so big game if
- 26:26Speaker 1: we I said, I think, if we beat Maryland, we
- 26:30Speaker 1: only need two more wins to lock it up.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and maybe I mean yeah, beat Maryland and I
- 26:39Speaker 2: think three wins is pretty safe.
- 26:40Speaker 1: I really do.
- 26:41Speaker 2: I think, no matter who they are Maryland being one
- 26:44Speaker 2: of them. Yeah, you can almost probably lock it up
- 26:46Speaker 2: if we can get two more after that. Tickets as
- 26:48Speaker 2: low as three dollars, it says for the game.
- 26:50Speaker 1: I can't believe that.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Well, I would never have thought at Northwestern is the
- 26:58Speaker 2: highest going ticket for the remain games on our schedule.
- 27:01Speaker 1: I don't know why that is Senior Night at Northwestern.
- 27:07Speaker 1: I don't know expensive to be a Northwestern men are
- 27:13Speaker 1: doing better than the ladies, though ladies aren't a little
- 27:15Speaker 1: bit of a skid.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Yeah, they have. They have stroled a couple recently. I
- 27:24Speaker 2: don't I don't don't have much. I've kind of watched them.
- 27:26Speaker 2: I'm not really sure where they're sitting at.
- 27:29Speaker 1: The sixteen and eight. They're on a three game losing streak.
- 27:31Speaker 1: They lost to Iowa by fifteen, Michigan by eighteen, Indiana
- 27:36Speaker 1: by sixteen. So, I mean, it's been I don't know.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I don't know what happened to Prince, but she has
- 27:43Speaker 1: not been playing well the last couple of games.
- 27:46Speaker 2: The big ten micd are up the other day, did
- 27:49Speaker 2: they blame them? All? Right, let's move on here, last
- 27:56Speaker 2: topic of the day. Let's talk about our coaching staff.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I think you know, keeping football fresh and moving ourselves up.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Have we claimed the off season Natty title banner?
- 28:08Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Some people have claimed it.
- 28:13Speaker 1: I thought Texas Tech claimed it this year. The best
- 28:16Speaker 1: portal class in a generation, GM Worthy stealing or whatever
- 28:20Speaker 1: it was. Yeah, not so fast.
- 28:26Speaker 2: We are. We are the champs in the off season
- 28:32Speaker 2: coaching staff. That's the topic today. We mentioned as they've
- 28:37Speaker 2: all came in in random times when it's final as
- 28:41Speaker 2: officially yesterday with the contract being out there of coach
- 28:45Speaker 2: Mike Eckler, our special teams coordinator. Who's the last piece
- 28:49Speaker 2: to this new puzzle that Matt Rule has put together
- 28:54Speaker 2: for this coaching staff. I'll start with this very positive
- 29:02Speaker 2: vibes from all these hires, and.
- 29:08Speaker 1: I think.
- 29:11Speaker 2: You can chalk that up to a little bit of
- 29:13Speaker 2: the kool aid, the rul aid, the off season hype.
- 29:16Speaker 2: But there may be a piece of it, like if
- 29:17Speaker 2: you're just a objective fan from another Big Ten team
- 29:22Speaker 2: or another team in the country, you look at it
- 29:24Speaker 2: and you go, okay, to Nebraska's got some names. You know,
- 29:29Speaker 2: they did a good job bringing in some people. I
- 29:32Speaker 2: think that's also a very true statement now as a
- 29:35Speaker 2: fan and us in this podcast, let's see what happens
- 29:39Speaker 2: with it. And we're not really probably gonna see a
- 29:41Speaker 2: whole lot until we hit the field Naugus without being
- 29:44Speaker 2: able to see the spring game. So there's a lot
- 29:47Speaker 2: of pieces here, I guess overall general thoughts before we
- 29:51Speaker 2: dive into the individual coaches.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I'm not gonna say we won the offseason national title,
- 29:58Speaker 1: but I do feel good about that hires. I know
- 30:01Speaker 1: that part of that's probably because the puff pieces I read,
- 30:04Speaker 1: but you know that's how I get my information. I'm
- 30:08Speaker 1: not deep in the trenches of special teams. You know,
- 30:12Speaker 1: rankings for every team in the league during the season,
- 30:15Speaker 1: so if they don't feel like good hires and you've
- 30:18Speaker 1: seen at least statistics that sort of back up those
- 30:22Speaker 1: arguments such special teams. And then you see, you know,
- 30:26Speaker 1: the D line guy, I can't say D line looked
- 30:27Speaker 1: really good. They held the run game pretty well. Thirteen.
- 30:34Speaker 2: I guess fourteen if you include Matt rules. So there's fourteen.
- 30:37Speaker 2: And as a reminder to this whole new coaching world
- 30:43Speaker 2: that we live in, where you know that used to
- 30:45Speaker 2: be laws around analysts and number of coaches you could
- 30:48Speaker 2: have on staff.
- 30:49Speaker 1: A lot of those are gone.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Uh, And you can get as many coaches as you
- 30:53Speaker 2: want and put them wherever you want and do whatever
- 30:55Speaker 2: you want. And so as a as a head coach,
- 30:58Speaker 2: as a program leader, it's your job then to find
- 31:02Speaker 2: one who those people are, and two put them and
- 31:05Speaker 2: give them the responsibilities to do the job correctly. So
- 31:09Speaker 2: when you put all of it together on a football field,
- 31:12Speaker 2: it looks good. It's different than basketball, it's different than baseball,
- 31:15Speaker 2: It's different than any other sport because there's so many
- 31:18Speaker 2: unique pieces that have to come together at one time
- 31:22Speaker 2: on the field that one time. I mean, what other
- 31:23Speaker 2: sport can you think of is with eleven people on
- 31:27Speaker 2: the field? Is there is there one?
- 31:30Speaker 1: I don't know how people are in rugby. Yeah, maybe
- 31:33Speaker 1: rugby that could be similar. I don't know.
- 31:39Speaker 2: I think football obviously is the one we're most familiar
- 31:41Speaker 2: with in America that has a lot of players on
- 31:46Speaker 2: the field, and that's your job to coach all of
- 31:49Speaker 2: them as one unit, but also have all these position
- 31:53Speaker 2: coaches to help and specialize and teach fundamentals.
- 31:56Speaker 1: And all of that.
- 31:58Speaker 2: So I'm not going to comment on it now, but
- 32:01Speaker 2: the word that I've used, or the phrase that i've
- 32:03Speaker 2: heard when it comes to coaches, not just in Nebraska
- 32:06Speaker 2: but just in general with these new rules is how
- 32:09Speaker 2: many cooks in the kitchen is too much? So just
- 32:12Speaker 2: keep that in mind here as we're going through this.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Head coach Matt Ruhle obviously has been here now for
- 32:20Speaker 2: his third year as head coach. Offensive coordinator Dana Holgerson,
- 32:26Speaker 2: technically he is new to start the year, came in
- 32:29Speaker 2: middle of last year. Defensive coordinator John Butler similar story.
- 32:34Speaker 2: He's not new, but he's got a new titles from
- 32:37Speaker 2: what he was last year.
- 32:38Speaker 1: He is the DC.
- 32:41Speaker 2: By himself here, and then special teams coordinator Mike Eckler
- 32:46Speaker 2: most recent higher rounds out the coordinators, all three new
- 32:52Speaker 2: real they are they're new coordinators. And what's funny is
- 32:56Speaker 2: you is it is funny?
- 32:59Speaker 1: It's it is what it is? But are we talk
- 33:01Speaker 1: about it?
- 33:02Speaker 2: We said, Okay, these are all three great hires, all
- 33:04Speaker 2: three new faces. We like them. And then I heard
- 33:06Speaker 2: someone say lio State's got three new coordinators too, They're
- 33:10Speaker 2: gonna be in trouble. I'm like, maybe, like as it
- 33:16Speaker 2: Nebraska media at its finest, but I do regardless of
- 33:20Speaker 2: that comment, I think that like you said that they're
- 33:24Speaker 2: this is everybody's saying. Okay, Nebraska got a big name.
- 33:28Speaker 2: They got Mike Eckler, like one of the in the
- 33:32Speaker 2: coaching world better special teams.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Of the three, you feel like one might be a
- 33:35Speaker 1: step back and the other two are at worst a wash, correct,
- 33:40Speaker 1: you know, But I don't. We don't think either one
- 33:43Speaker 1: of them are washes from special teams or offensive coordinator.
- 33:50Speaker 2: So here's here's how I'm like piecing this together. I
- 33:54Speaker 2: guess in the past we've always had coordinators that have
- 33:57Speaker 2: a position as well. I think that's pretty true on
- 34:03Speaker 2: both sides of the ball. None of these three guys
- 34:07Speaker 2: have specific responsibilities as far as positions now. Eckler's special
- 34:14Speaker 2: teams coordinator that kind of its own thing, but Dana
- 34:17Speaker 2: and John Butler are both strictly coordinators.
- 34:25Speaker 1: We go a level down further. Okay, On the offensive side,
- 34:30Speaker 1: Glenn Thomas is back as the quarterbacks coach. E J.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Barthole is back and he's been here with the Rule
- 34:37Speaker 2: as the running backs coach. Same thing with Donnie Royola
- 34:40Speaker 2: as the alliance coach, and then the Keel Shorts, our
- 34:44Speaker 2: new receivers coach, who is a Dana guy. With them
- 34:47Speaker 2: at West Virginia, at Houston, most recently at Kentucky. UH,
- 34:53Speaker 2: that's our offensive staff. And those guys are in charge
- 34:55Speaker 2: of the position. Who'd I forget coach seven Satterfield, I
- 35:00Speaker 2: didn't have him circled, I have him written down. Guy
- 35:03Speaker 2: Ed's coach, Marcus Sadderfield. All these guys are in charge
- 35:08Speaker 2: of their own individual positions in my mind, teaching the
- 35:11Speaker 2: teaching them the fundamentals, the techniques.
- 35:15Speaker 1: UH.
- 35:15Speaker 2: And then Dana's gonna take all those things and piece
- 35:17Speaker 2: them together. And and Dana is gonna have input in saying, hey, coaches,
- 35:21Speaker 2: we need guys X, Y and Z to be able
- 35:23Speaker 2: to do this, this, and this, and they're going to
- 35:27Speaker 2: scheme up something together as a staff. To me, it
- 35:30Speaker 2: makes it makes a hierarchy. The hierarchy. It makes sense
- 35:33Speaker 2: more so than what we've had in the past. That's
- 35:38Speaker 2: on the opposite side of the ball.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Defense.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Similar story John Butler and then Rob Devorchik at the linebackers.
- 35:45Speaker 2: He's been with rule here since he got here. Phil
- 35:48Speaker 2: Simpson the new end's coach, which sounds like maybe we'll
- 35:54Speaker 2: be more linebacker type ends. Phil snow who's the associate
- 36:00Speaker 2: head coach. Kind of rules. I don't know what consultant
- 36:05Speaker 2: or guy that helped him last year. He's now the
- 36:07Speaker 2: associate head coach, but also gonna be helping with the
- 36:09Speaker 2: defensive line. You mentioned Terry Bratton, the Kansas City assistant
- 36:13Speaker 2: d line coach that is now officially on board there
- 36:17Speaker 2: Addison Williams, the new defensive backs coach that rounds out
- 36:22Speaker 2: our defensive position positions there. So again, I like the structure.
- 36:30Speaker 2: I like hierarchy. It makes logical sense to me. We'll
- 36:36Speaker 2: see if it plays out in the field, but I
- 36:38Speaker 2: think it structurally makes sense.
- 36:41Speaker 1: And it is also funny because our the defensive backs
- 36:46Speaker 1: coach was a defensive coordinator, and then you have John
- 36:50Speaker 1: Butler defensive coordinator, Phil Snow defensive coordinator, and then on
- 36:54Speaker 1: offense you have Glenn Thopas who was co offensive coordinator,
- 36:57Speaker 1: Saderfield who was offensive coordinator, and then obviously Holgerson offensive coordinator,
- 37:05Speaker 1: and then Matt Rule above all of it. So I
- 37:07Speaker 1: just feel like there's there might. There are gonna be
- 37:10Speaker 1: a lot of ideas and it will be interesting to
- 37:13Speaker 1: see how they all align.
- 37:15Speaker 2: So what I like though, because I agree when when
- 37:19Speaker 2: it goes to cooks in the kitchen and and and
- 37:22Speaker 2: you're starting to think about that what that means with
- 37:24Speaker 2: all these coaches, because even we don't know the names
- 37:28Speaker 2: of these people. But when you talk about let's just
- 37:30Speaker 2: take the the linebackers for example, you're gonna have personnel
- 37:34Speaker 2: staff that's even further down than Rob Devorchik.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Right, the grad associate assistance and the yes, yeah that
- 37:42Speaker 1: also have So what I like about it is the the.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Hierarchy is very clear. Now. Word that can get fuzzy
- 37:50Speaker 2: is if you feel like your your your input is
- 37:53Speaker 2: not heard or valued. There's frustration, there's there's there can
- 37:57Speaker 2: be some disruption within a within an organization.
- 38:02Speaker 1: It is, it's all gonna flow.
- 38:04Speaker 2: However, the information flows, like you said, real realizes your
- 38:07Speaker 2: responsibilities when it comes to the day to day game
- 38:10Speaker 2: Like I think he was kind of involved with the
- 38:13Speaker 2: defense a little bit, but then Tony White's when when
- 38:15Speaker 2: they brought him in, I mean, Tony White was damn good.
- 38:18Speaker 2: So then our offense stuck like rules Like Okay, I
- 38:21Speaker 2: got it.
- 38:22Speaker 1: I don't think what do you think like this is
- 38:25Speaker 1: not like what do you think he's gonna be doing?
- 38:27Speaker 1: Because I feel like Holkers is gonna be game playing
- 38:30Speaker 1: in the offense. Yep, Well, theer's gonna be game playing
- 38:32Speaker 1: the defense. Eckler's gonna be game playing special teams, which
- 38:36Speaker 1: really shouldn't change that much per game. Like what is
- 38:40Speaker 1: he doing?
- 38:41Speaker 2: Like, So that's it's fascinating And and this conversation Will
- 38:46Speaker 2: I can almost guarantee come up. I mean, his job
- 38:51Speaker 2: is to manage all the pieces. By doing that, you're
- 38:57Speaker 2: also gonna have your own input. But what's funny is
- 39:01Speaker 2: he's not going to have as far as a game
- 39:03Speaker 2: plan like you're mentioning. But what have we always said
- 39:07Speaker 2: about rule the last few years, Like we know he's
- 39:10Speaker 2: a great whether you know whether we think it's fake or.
- 39:16Speaker 1: You know, genuine he is.
- 39:18Speaker 2: He is a communicator, he is, that's his that's his
- 39:21Speaker 2: top quality is like just talking to people and talking
- 39:24Speaker 2: to people the media, talking to.
- 39:26Speaker 1: The public, talking to people who like that. That's what
- 39:30Speaker 1: his job is.
- 39:31Speaker 2: We've always said he might not be a great X
- 39:34Speaker 2: and OSE guy, he might not under look at his
- 39:36Speaker 2: time management stuff that we've had, it's not been great.
- 39:41Speaker 2: But but conceptually big picture, he's not bad when it
- 39:47Speaker 2: comes to that stuff. So he can take a step
- 39:49Speaker 2: back and look and say oh shit, like, it doesn't
- 39:53Speaker 2: matter if our if our defense is the best in
- 39:56Speaker 2: the country, God, if we can't have a top one
- 39:58Speaker 2: hundred offense, it doesn't matter. He's able to look at
- 40:03Speaker 2: that and then and then yeah, it's up to his next.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Guy on the totem pole.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Those three to take your position group and obviously special
- 40:11Speaker 2: teams was what it was this year, big flaw.
- 40:14Speaker 1: So I think his job is to manage all that.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Is that a hard job?
- 40:17Speaker 2: Some would say, well, gee, he's not going to be
- 40:19Speaker 2: doing anything. If it works a lot of it's going
- 40:24Speaker 2: to be credit to rule, and it should be. But
- 40:26Speaker 2: if it blows up, it's also a lot on rule
- 40:30Speaker 2: where he kind of protects himself a little bit. The
- 40:34Speaker 2: blame's going to get put on the head position or
- 40:37Speaker 2: the head coordinator.
- 40:39Speaker 1: If goes, it's cheaper to fire those people. And I'm
- 40:43Speaker 1: not saying like, I'm not pointing that out as like
- 40:45Speaker 1: a rule doesn't do anything sort of. It's just it's
- 40:48Speaker 1: funny to think about because when you think about you're
- 40:50Speaker 1: like Ryan Day, he's involved with the offense. You know,
- 40:53Speaker 1: Kirby smart, he's a defensive minded guy. Rule is I mean,
- 40:58Speaker 1: I would assume you think of him as a defensive
- 41:00Speaker 1: head coach, but you don't really only I don't think
- 41:04Speaker 1: of him as an offense or defensive head coach. It's
- 41:07Speaker 1: just weird.
- 41:10Speaker 2: You could pick out almost every coach in college football,
- 41:13Speaker 2: even as just a casual or fan. You could place
- 41:16Speaker 2: him in one category. I don't know what you would
- 41:18Speaker 2: do with the rule and where you would put him.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Here's where I think things got harry last year. I'm
- 41:25Speaker 2: just speculating. I don't know this as a fact. Our
- 41:28Speaker 2: offense sucked. Our defense is pretty damn good for the
- 41:32Speaker 2: most part, not every game. Tony White was pissed that
- 41:36Speaker 2: our offense sucked, and I feel like that got ugly
- 41:42Speaker 2: a little bit as far as the chemistry when we
- 41:47Speaker 2: went on those losing streak there to the middle of
- 41:49Speaker 2: the of the year, with the coaching staff, with the players,
- 41:53Speaker 2: you know who they trusted. You know it is because
- 41:57Speaker 2: it is as defensive coach, if you're doing everything you
- 41:59Speaker 2: can and then you're like offense, figure figure figure your.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Ship out not carrying their weight, and it sticks out
- 42:04Speaker 1: like a sore throne, and then you guys still get
- 42:08Speaker 1: picked on like it's like, well, you know, Tony White's
- 42:10Speaker 1: defense did it stop them on that last drive. It's like, well,
- 42:12Speaker 1: I hold I held Ohio State to fucking seventeen points.
- 42:16Speaker 2: You know, and the speculation again, I I thought this
- 42:20Speaker 2: ever since the Dana Holders and Marcus Sadderfield. Sadderfield is
- 42:24Speaker 2: obviously still on staff. I think that Rule and Sadderfield
- 42:27Speaker 2: their buddies. I think their bet they're really good friends.
- 42:30Speaker 2: And I think that ticked Tony White off that Rule,
- 42:34Speaker 2: not that he sided with Marcus, but that he was
- 42:38Speaker 2: he was defending Marcus more than they for even to
- 42:42Speaker 2: start the year and bringing back as the OC. Like
- 42:46Speaker 2: I I do think that was a big part of it.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Speculation there. So I think that's a lot of the
- 42:53Speaker 2: reason potentially why Tony White left, amongst other things.
- 42:56Speaker 1: But I also think that's why they brought Phil Snow
- 42:59Speaker 1: in as another layer of like like you know, Bill
- 43:04Speaker 1: Snow cannot get fired for anything, like there's nothing that
- 43:07Speaker 1: that man will do that will be like that's the
- 43:09Speaker 1: problem with the OSCAR program. So now Rule has created
- 43:12Speaker 1: a layer of separation of like, hey, Phil, I need
- 43:14Speaker 1: you to talk to sat like he's not getting a
- 43:18Speaker 1: shit done with the tight ends or there's just a
- 43:21Speaker 1: tier to handle that there.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Is, And what's the element we haven't talked about with
- 43:27Speaker 2: all of this is the evolving college football landscape that
- 43:32Speaker 2: continues and probably will continue for a long time of
- 43:35Speaker 2: the transfer portal, and I al, YadA, YadA, YadA. Do
- 43:39Speaker 2: we have the staff the coaches in place to react
- 43:42Speaker 2: to that and adjust appropriately and trying to stay ahead
- 43:49Speaker 2: of the curve on a lot of this stuff.
- 43:53Speaker 1: That I don't know.
- 43:55Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 43:57Speaker 1: I don't think we're in.
- 43:58Speaker 2: A bad spot by any means now, and in fact,
- 44:00Speaker 2: I think if you put it on a scale, we'd
- 44:01Speaker 2: probably be still towards the front end of an IL
- 44:05Speaker 2: and all that. But there's some pretty old school guys
- 44:11Speaker 2: on this staff. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing.
- 44:13Speaker 2: That can also be a good thing depending on where
- 44:15Speaker 2: everything goes.
- 44:17Speaker 1: But I don't know. I don't know the answer to that.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Do you know the guys?
- 44:21Speaker 2: I know we have some pretty good recruiters on the staff.
- 44:25Speaker 2: But I think this whole new generation of kids is
- 44:29Speaker 2: with all this money, it's just so so different, it's
- 44:31Speaker 2: so odd, and we still have the financial support. I
- 44:36Speaker 2: think I saw we were fourth in the Big ten
- 44:38Speaker 2: from our nil valuation as a team like that's great,
- 44:42Speaker 2: but it comes to taking that and then putting the
- 44:45Speaker 2: puzzle pieces together, like you've got to do it. I
- 44:48Speaker 2: we we have no excuse to not be able to
- 44:51Speaker 2: do it with the financial resources that we have, and
- 44:54Speaker 2: now this coaching staff that we have in are paying
- 44:56Speaker 2: a lot of money. So I don't think there's many
- 44:59Speaker 2: excuses left for Husker fans for Rule, especially in its staff.
- 45:04Speaker 2: Like you got it, it's now or never, dude, like
- 45:07Speaker 2: figure it out.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I agree. I I don't. I don't want
- 45:16Speaker 1: to say I'm drinking the Rule aid, but I wasn't
- 45:19Speaker 1: upsetting with anything that happened this offseason, outside of obviously
- 45:22Speaker 1: Tony White. I think there wasn't a moment where I
- 45:26Speaker 1: was like, oh man, that really sucks.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess would you the answer to that, would
- 45:32Speaker 2: you feel better if Tony White was here and we
- 45:35Speaker 2: retained those guys that all transferred, Yeah, yes, we would
- 45:40Speaker 2: feel a lot better.
- 45:42Speaker 1: We would feel a lot better. We would. I'm trying
- 45:44Speaker 1: to think of who all transferred that I'm really disappointed transferred.
- 45:50Speaker 2: I mean there's some younger guys I think that like
- 45:53Speaker 2: you're you're James Williams is one name Williams. My mind,
- 45:56Speaker 2: Mackay beaher. I thought like, like not huge, but think
- 46:00Speaker 2: you know.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Just some conces I agree with that. Yeah, No, I totally.
- 46:04Speaker 1: I definitely yes, if he was here, I would definitely
- 46:07Speaker 1: feel better. But I don't. The drop off wasn't as
- 46:10Speaker 1: much as I thought it was gonna be going in.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Don't ash this off season?
- 46:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and what we don't know to what you really
- 46:16Speaker 2: don't we've we've heard that maybe we want to retain
- 46:19Speaker 2: the same type of scheme, the three three five.
- 46:22Speaker 1: How is that going to be adjusted? We're not really
- 46:24Speaker 1: gonna know.
- 46:24Speaker 2: And I think that's smart, Like, I think that needs
- 46:26Speaker 2: to be kept under wraps until we start playing, because
- 46:30Speaker 2: we have from now and when spring practice starts here
- 46:33Speaker 2: in a couple of weeks till August to work on
- 46:36Speaker 2: all of whatever we're adjusting from last year on that
- 46:39Speaker 2: side of the ball, with new coaches, with new faces,
- 46:42Speaker 2: there's gonna be the element of the unknown when we
- 46:44Speaker 2: take the field the Arrowhead against Cincinnati. We need to
- 46:48Speaker 2: make that happen like that can only help you, all right,
- 46:52Speaker 2: There's no reason we need to be telling.
- 46:53Speaker 1: People what we're doing.
- 46:54Speaker 2: I'll be really upset if that does come out because
- 46:58Speaker 2: our media pushes forward or there's no reason to release
- 47:02Speaker 2: any of that information on what you know, maybe you
- 47:04Speaker 2: can be very high level and say like we have been,
- 47:08Speaker 2: like it's a version of last years, but we're gonna
- 47:10Speaker 2: have some new faces, like keep it that, keep it
- 47:12Speaker 2: high level, but don't give away anything that we're trying
- 47:15Speaker 2: to do.
- 47:19Speaker 1: And now we just have to wait six more months.
- 47:23Speaker 2: And we just gotta keep talking, keep talking about random topics.
- 47:28Speaker 2: I love it.
- 47:30Speaker 1: Okay, Well, no Dak tonight.
- 47:32Speaker 2: So hopefully he'll be back next week and tough enough
- 47:38Speaker 2: a little bit maybe maybe maybe maybe hopefully maybe we
- 47:42Speaker 2: don't hope. Uh yeah, we'll be back next week. Hopefully
- 47:45Speaker 2: couple of wins, that's for sure. Hopefully the Maryland and
- 47:50Speaker 2: Northwestern from the Huskers.
- 47:51Speaker 1: So NBA All Star Weekend team Shack, team shack. May.
- 47:59Speaker 1: I actually don't know if I feel like we're a
- 48:00Speaker 1: team Shack. But I'm not gonna put too much weight
- 48:03Speaker 1: into it because the All Star Games always suck.
- 48:06Speaker 2: They're not great.
- 48:07Speaker 1: I usually still watch them. I do too. I just
- 48:11Speaker 1: want one person to care, yeah, and that'll just force
- 48:15Speaker 1: everyone else to care. But no one cares.
- 48:18Speaker 2: I don't know if that'll ever happen.
- 48:20Speaker 1: Whatever, it's like, Oh, I'm sorry, you get paid sixty
- 48:22Speaker 1: million dollars and you have to come and play one
- 48:24Speaker 1: more game.
- 48:25Speaker 2: Oh it's so tough with all the other guys that
- 48:28Speaker 2: are getting paid that much. All right, whatever, all right,
- 48:34Speaker 2: all right, go be red.
- 48:37Speaker 1: GBR almost feels empty without that boomer. Sooner, you know, start, start,
