Transcript
- 0:00Break Fix Podcast is all about capturing the living history of people from all
- 0:05over the autos sphere, from wrench, turners, and racers to artists, authors,
- 0:09designers, and everything in between.
- 0:11Our goal is to inspire a new generation of Petrolhead that wonder how did they
- 0:16get that job or become that person.
- 0:19The road to success is paved by all of us because everyone has a story.
- 0:27Like most of us, William S. Jackson became involved with automobiles at an early age.
- 0:32During the early 1950s, he was a member of Penn State University's hot rod
- 0:36club, and in the mid 1950s, he began racing in SECA events with a Jaguar
- 0:41one 20 M and later some Morgans.
- 0:44After his military service, he completed his degree at Penn State and began
- 0:48a lifelong career in journalism.
- 0:50His editorship of major vintage car clubs, magazines during the 1960s
- 0:54and seventies gives bill credit as one of the founders who launched the
- 0:58then fledgling old car hobby, turning it into the vibrant community and
- 1:03economic powerhouse that it is today.
- 1:05Bill is a charter member of the Society of Automotive Historians,
- 1:08founded in October of 1969 and during the annual SAH Awards banquet in
- 1:132023 held in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
- 1:15Bill presented his autobiography to the banquet audience, including his
- 1:20recollections of the early days of the SAH, and the following recording was made
- 1:24by Bill from that same script in 2024.
- 1:28When I was approached by SAH past President Bob Barr and friend, and
- 1:33SAH, board member Dean Nelson, to be the speaker at our annual awards
- 1:37center in October, 2023, we ended up having a conference phone call and
- 1:44discussed what I might talk about.
- 1:46We quickly discarded the idea of a serious automotive history topic, but
- 1:50rather address my history with the SAH.
- 1:54As it appears, I am the last one living of those who are in attendance
- 1:59at that October 11th, 1969 gathering in my office in the then small
- 2:06national headquarters of the Antique Automobile Club of America, from
- 2:10which I produced the bimonthly edition of antique automobile for the club.
- 2:16For historical accuracy.
- 2:17The photograph taken on that occasion was taken with all those attending outside the
- 2:23front doors, which led to both the Hershey Museum and the A A CA headquarters.
- 2:29It was located at the western end of the old Hershey Arena, an ice hockey
- 2:34arena that then the home of the Hershey Bears American Hockey League team.
- 2:39How did the founding group get there?
- 2:41In the spring of 1969, friends and fellow automotive historians, g Marshall Nall of
- 2:47Newark, Delaware, and Richard b Brigham of Marietta, Georgia, had corresponded
- 2:52regularly on various automotive history subjects and commented on the need for
- 2:57a national organization, which would bring together and expand, as well as
- 3:02give some organization to the field.
- 3:05As a result, they decided to mail a questionnaire addressing
- 3:09the subject to about 75 of their acquaintances with similar interests.
- 3:14The results were very positive and even included the suggested name,
- 3:19the Society of Automotive Historians.
- 3:22My own response was printed in that first reorganization newsletter, number
- 3:27one, in which I ventured quote, I think this is an idea, long overdue.
- 3:33We are still in the first generation of the automobile in this country.
- 3:37Yet if we do not glean this history within, at most the next 10 years,
- 3:43it will be in some part lost forever.
- 3:46In that letter, I also offered my office at Antique Automobile Magazine
- 3:51as a possible location for a first meeting to organize the society.
- 3:56This during the Antique Automobile Club of America's Eastern National Fall meet
- 4:00in Hershey, the second weekend in October, a letter from Marshall Nall followed
- 4:06first noting I was pleased to receive your letter of the application with
- 4:10check for membership in this society.
- 4:14Was the first received.
- 4:15He then went on to say they were accepting my invitation and the initial
- 4:20meeting of the society was set for 10:00 AM Saturday, October 11th, 1969.
- 4:26The meeting was held and resulted in the photograph being taken outside
- 4:30the entrance to the Hershey Museum.
- 4:33Of all those, attending the inaugural event past President Bob Maher has
- 4:38asked me to report what I know of each.
- 4:41I'm going to go from right to left as I know more about
- 4:45those on the left of the photo.
- 4:47First, Glenn r Bachelor, a student of automotive history, and one of those
- 4:52working on what we simply called the list as we tried to identify all of the early
- 4:58automobile manufacturers in America.
- 5:01Richard b Brigham with his wife Grace r Brigham, truly one of
- 5:05the co-founders of the Society.
- 5:07Guy p Sealey Jr.
- 5:09And Charles W. Bishop.
- 5:11Two more of the early researchers on the American auto industry.
- 5:16G. Marshall Nall, the other co-founder of the Society, Herman l Smith
- 5:21from Canada, and a researcher on American cars manufactured in Canada.
- 5:26Bruce Baldwin, MOS of Madison, Wisconsin, who attended but never joined the society.
- 5:32Bruce was the builder of the MOS safari car, but also the mo's ostentatious sedan.
- 5:39He was there at my invitation showing an early race car at the A-A-C-A-B.
- 5:45Next John m Peckham automotive artist and graphic artist who designed some
- 5:50of the early SAH membership brochures.
- 5:54John paintings, one of a Mack truck, char Blank was included in John
- 5:59Monte's history of Mack Truck and paintings of a cord model eight 10
- 6:04sedan and a Model j Dusenberg Boattail Roadster, which was never built.
- 6:09Gordon B's design appear in our book Rolling Sculpture.
- 6:14Then Henry Austin Clark Jr. Creator of the Long Island Automotive Museum in
- 6:20Sandy Hollow, New York, and builder of one of the largest and most inclusive
- 6:25automotive libraries and early literature collections in the country, two
- 6:30semi-truck loads when he went to the Henry Ford Museum following his death.
- 6:35I could regale you with OTE Clark stories for the entire evening,
- 6:39but I'll tell you just two.
- 6:41When OTE built the Long Island Automotive Museum, he immediately
- 6:44applied for fire insurance only to be told by several insurance companies.
- 6:49His museum was too distant from any fire company protection to qualify
- 6:53for coverage not to be deterred.
- 6:56He applied for and received a state charter for the Sandy Hollow Fire Company.
- 7:02Having a red model T Ford Coop chief's car, an early American France ladder
- 7:07truck, and an early motorized pumper.
- 7:10He was immediately in inundated with calls and catalogs from companies
- 7:15wishing to sell him equipment, et cetera.
- 7:18He got his fire insurance and ordered one chief's badge and 50 captain's badges.
- 7:23He then received a call from the badge company stating that, aside
- 7:28from the city of New York and the city of Los Angeles, it was the
- 7:32largest order for captain's badges.
- 7:34And where was Sandy Hollow, New York wife.
- 7:37Rosemary and I are captains in the Sandy Hollow Fire Company,
- 7:41but that's another story.
- 7:43Secondly, when I was named editor of Antique Automobile Magazine in 1962, I was
- 7:49contacting all of the automotive writers, photographers, artists, historians, and
- 7:55libraries seeking their ideas and help.
- 7:58One I wanted to meet was Austin Clark.
- 8:01I knew he was going to attend the a a c annual meeting in Philadelphia
- 8:05and planned to meet him there.
- 8:07I was going to wait till after the annual banquet and speak to him.
- 8:11Then thus, I waited and waited and they were turning down the banquet room
- 8:16lights and he still had not emerged.
- 8:19I went in looking for him.
- 8:20It was the 50th anniversary year of Dodge and the Chrysler Corporation had
- 8:25reproduced the first Dodge brochure and one had been placed at every seat at
- 8:30the banquet I located Austin, making the rounds of all the tables, picking up all
- 8:35the Dodge brochures that had been left.
- 8:38When he saw me, he simply said They'll be paying me $5 a piece
- 8:43for these in a year or two.
- 8:44You're Bill Jackson, and what can I do to help you?
- 8:48That brings me down to the last guy on the left in the picture, yours
- 8:53Truly, at the time, I was in my eighth year as editor of Antique Automobile
- 8:58Magazine for the A-A-C-A-A stretch.
- 9:01That was to end in June, 1970 when Rosemary and I purchased the nearby
- 9:07Hummelstown Sun Weekly newspaper and printing firm, changing it to
- 9:11the sun, quote, covering Hershey Hummelstown and lower DA county.
- 9:16However, it was not the end of my automotive magazine editing years as
- 9:21just months after purchasing the Sun.
- 9:23The Classic Car Club of America came calling and I became editor
- 9:27of their classic car magazine for the next three and a half years.
- 9:31In January, 1980, I took over as publisher and managing editor of
- 9:35Bullhorn, the magazine for the Veteran Motor Car Club of America, which I
- 9:40produced for about next two years.
- 9:43Other automotive publication contributions include my column Old Car World, which
- 9:48I did for the old competition Press and Auto Week from 1964 to 68, was Vintage
- 9:54car editor of World Car Guide Magazine, also 1964 to 68, and did articles and
- 10:01photos over the years and Road and Track Motor Trend and Automobile quarterly.
- 10:07Books thanks to Friend and longtime, SAH Secretary Charlie
- 10:11Bets, who was series editor.
- 10:13I did the Lincoln Continental, 1940 to 48 for an English publisher in 1967,
- 10:19was a contributor to the American car since 1775, published in 1971, did
- 10:26Rolly Sculpture, a designer, and his work with Gordon m Burrick, published
- 10:30in 1975 with a second edition in 2008.
- 10:35A chapter on British car manufacturer, auto carrier AC in rural bertia
- 10:41when British Sports Cars Saved the Nation by John Nicholas in 2017.
- 10:48Activities in SAH.
- 10:50Due to other obligations I had, I never sought a position on the
- 10:54board of directors nor officer.
- 10:55As about the only Hershey area resident member, myself and wife Rosemary were
- 11:01responsible for making arrangements for the SAH Annual Dinner and Awards
- 11:05presentation for the first 10 years, taken us from the Hershey Italian
- 11:09Lodge to the Mill Street Inn, and on to the Hershey Parkview Banner.
- 11:13As our membership attending grew, also the printing division of my newspaper,
- 11:18the Sun printed some of the early SAH brochures as designed by John Beckham and
- 11:24edited by the secretary Charlie Betts.
- 11:27I could keep you here all day telling stories about the many SAH contributing
- 11:31members, but I'll limit it to just two.
- 11:35In June, 1970, when I was leaving the editorship of antique automobile
- 11:39and purchasing this son, a man by the name of Chester Krow visited my office
- 11:45explaining he was a publisher from Iola, Wisconsin and was planning to start a new
- 11:50publication dedicated to the auto history and collecting hub working title old cars.
- 11:58He offered me the editorship and invited Rosemary and I to visit Iola, giving
- 12:04us plane tickets to Green Bay where he picked us up and drove us on to Iola.
- 12:09We spent two days there meeting those who would be on my staff and
- 12:14touring the vast sprinting plan.
- 12:16We considered it, but the move to rural Wisconsin plus the bank's
- 12:20approval to buy the Hummelstown sun led us to turning it down.
- 12:24Mr. Raey was disappointed and asked me, where am I going to
- 12:29find another journalist that knows old cars and the hobby?
- 12:33I then told him I had been corresponding with this young man
- 12:36in Massachusetts who was producing a small, regional old car publication,
- 12:41and I thought he might be the answer.
- 12:43His name, David Brownell, and the rest is history.
- 12:47Dave guided the creation of old cars, even enlisting Henry Austin Clark Jr.
- 12:52To write a column and oh yes, he also served a term as president of SAH.
- 12:57Secondly, you have to go back to 1960.
- 13:00When Rosemary and I returned to Penn State for our master's degrees in
- 13:04journalism, we were a small class and all got to know each other.
- 13:09At the time, I was still active in Sports Car Club of America, hill Climbing,
- 13:13and the central Pennsylvania region.
- 13:16One of our class members was a girl who was majoring in theater
- 13:19arts and minoring in journalism.
- 13:21She had seen my 1957 AC Bristol Sports car, and it had stirred some
- 13:27interest, so we invited her to a party at our resident, which was
- 13:31mostly for our sports car friends.
- 13:33She came and was totally fascinated by the cars.
- 13:37Fast forward to her graduation with a job lined up in New York City
- 13:41with a theater publication, which folded shortly after she got there.
- 13:46Thus, she went to the New York Times classified ad section and saw ad
- 13:50for a research assistant at a new automotive history publication.
- 13:56Remembering how she had liked our car friends.
- 13:58She went for an interview.
- 14:00The person running the ad was l Scott Bailey, and the research
- 14:04assistant he was seeking was to help him at Automobile Quarterly.
- 14:08The young lady got the job and thus began her fabulous career in auto
- 14:13automotive history writing, including the editorship of aq, the young lady's name.
- 14:19Beverly Ray Kimes, who also, like Dave Brownell, served
- 14:24a term as President of SAH.
- 14:26Of course, I take full credit for their mutual success in the automotive
- 14:30writing field and leadership of SAH.
- 14:33But how did I arrive at the position as Editor of Man Automobile Magazine?
- 14:38Like most likely all of you, I started as a car guy, booked
- 14:42on hot rods in the late 1940s.
- 14:45This turned into a black lowered DRO three quarter race, engine 51 Ford,
- 14:50which went to Penn State with me where I became president of the Penn
- 14:54State Pacers, the only national Hot Rod Association chartered club at a
- 15:00college east of the Mississippi River.
- 15:02Then I discovered sports cars and went Sports Car Club of America
- 15:06Road racing in 1955 with a 54 Jaguar XK one 20 M Roadster, and did that
- 15:13until I got drafted in June, 1957.
- 15:16I found my career as a journalist in the Army as sports editor of the Eighth
- 15:20Infantry Division newspaper, the arrow.
- 15:23This prompted Rosemary's and my marriage in 1960 and had our return
- 15:28to Penn State for master's degrees.
- 15:30I conned my thesis committee into letting me do mine on the history of automotive
- 15:36journalism in the United States.
- 15:38I did most of my research in the vast library of early publications at the
- 15:43Swaggart Museum in Huntington, pa. There.
- 15:47I met William e Swaggart museum owner and a board member of
- 15:51the Antique Automobile Club of America, one cold winter afternoon.
- 15:55When I was doing research in his archive, he visited and sent something
- 15:59like, you really are dedicated.
- 16:01How would you like to be editor of Antique Automobile magazine?
- 16:05I answered in the affirmative, and he just simply said, oh and left.
- 16:09Fast forward a little over a year later when I had been hired as editor
- 16:14of the Union County Journal weekly newspaper in Lewisburg, pa. My phone
- 16:19rang one night, and upon answering, the caller said, this is William Swagger.
- 16:23Well, would you.
- 16:25I replied, would I what Mr. Swaggart?
- 16:28His irritated response was, would you like to be editor of antique automobile?
- 16:33Story was Editor l Scott Bailey had left the editorship of antique automobile
- 16:38to start automobile quarterly.
- 16:40This without much notice.
- 16:43As the A A CA board had pondered where they would find an editor.
- 16:47Mr. Swaggart told him my story, and the board agreed to have then
- 16:51president Mail and patent and vice president for publications.
- 16:54Jordan Norton interviewed me.
- 16:57Long story short, I got the job as a part-time position for the next six years,
- 17:02growing into a full-time job in 1968 with the stipulation I moved to Hershey and
- 17:08work out of a a CA national headquarters.
- 17:11There you have it.
- 17:12While Rosemary and I sold the sun in 2007, we both still write for it as to SAH.
- 17:19My only contribution these days is providing material for editor
- 17:23Rubin Verde at the SAH Journal.
- 17:26Case in point, my article, what's your autobiography in the March April issue
- 17:32in which I hope other SAH members will follow up with stories about a favorite
- 17:38car or automotive history happening.
- 17:41So much.
- 17:41Thanks for listening, and I'd be happy to answer any questions.
- 17:49This episode is brought to you in part by the Society of Automotive Historians.
