Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello everybody.
- 0:00Speaker 2: My name is Shane Told and I am the vocalist
- 0:03Speaker 2: for the Canadian group Silverstein.
- 0:06Speaker 3: Beautiful, Thanks so much.
- 0:08Speaker 4: Silver Stain is celebrating twenty five years. What does it
- 0:11Speaker 4: feel like to hit that milestone and how do you
- 0:13Speaker 4: keep the passion alive after all this time?
- 0:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty surreal, to be honest with you, I
- 0:19Speaker 2: think when you really think about twenty five years, it's
- 0:23Speaker 2: like kind of nuts. You know, it's my entire adult
- 0:26Speaker 2: life and I don't know where the time is gone.
- 0:33Speaker 1: You know, I walked into I live in Las Vegas.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Actually this wasn't in Las Vegas, but I live in
- 0:39Speaker 2: a place where there's a lot of casinos.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And sometimes when you walk into a casino, they'll love
- 0:43Speaker 1: be like how old are you? Like They're just like
- 0:45Speaker 1: wondering if the should.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I do you?
- 0:46Speaker 1: And I'm like, I do I look like I could
- 0:48Speaker 1: be underage? Yeah, but they asked.
- 0:50Speaker 2: They asked me my age, and I went and I
- 0:53Speaker 2: was with my girlfriend and I went, I went forty
- 0:56Speaker 2: two and.
- 0:56Speaker 1: She goes, no, you're not and I was like, oh fuck, no,
- 0:59Speaker 1: I'm not four. What It's like.
- 1:02Speaker 2: It's really weird how time, especially seemingly since like post
- 1:07Speaker 2: COVID time is just like weird now and I don't
- 1:10Speaker 2: I can't describe it. But the fact that twenty five
- 1:13Speaker 2: years has happened and we've I've been doing this the
- 1:16Speaker 2: whole time, like we haven't stopped. We have never stopped,
- 1:19Speaker 2: we have not taken any breaks hiatuses. We've either been writing, recording,
- 1:24Speaker 2: touring literally the entire time. It's really it really is surreal.
- 1:29Speaker 2: But at the same time, it's it feels amazing. I
- 1:34Speaker 2: don't feel my age, I don't feel tired. I just
- 1:40Speaker 2: every time a show, I feel like we keep getting
- 1:43Speaker 2: better and my voice keeps getting stronger, and it's like,
- 1:47Speaker 2: I mean, there's got to be some limit, but like
- 1:49Speaker 2: right now we're just enjoying it and enjoying this just
- 1:53Speaker 2: like the show's being bigger than they've ever been too,
- 1:56Speaker 2: So it's all really fucking awesome.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Yeah, that's amazing, amazing to hear as well that you
- 2:01Speaker 4: feel you still feel really good and that you feel
- 2:04Speaker 4: like you still can put on the best performance of
- 2:06Speaker 4: your life.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's weird, you know, like with with with age
- 2:11Speaker 2: comes like confidence and knowledge and you know, and I
- 2:16Speaker 2: don't know, like I don't know, I almost want to say,
- 2:19Speaker 2: like sometimes my back hurts, but like not really like
- 2:22Speaker 2: you know, it's it's like, you know, it's still physically,
- 2:25Speaker 2: I still feel really good.
- 2:26Speaker 1: So yeah, I don't know. I just think we've we've
- 2:30Speaker 1: learned a lot.
- 2:32Speaker 2: And you know, sometimes I think about that, you know
- 2:34Speaker 2: that ten thousand hours theory. Yeah, the idea for your listeners,
- 2:39Speaker 2: like the idea that you know, if you do anything
- 2:42Speaker 2: for ten thousand hours, you become an expert on it.
- 2:45Speaker 2: That's the that's the number that they did ran experiments.
- 2:49Speaker 2: If you do anything for ten thousand hours, you're And
- 2:51Speaker 2: I was thinking about it, and I'm like, maybe that's it.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Maybe I've like finally hit my ten thousand hours of EMO.
- 2:58Speaker 3: I think it'd be a lot more.
- 3:01Speaker 4: I don't.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know, like I mean, if a
- 3:03Speaker 2: show isn't we haven't played ten thousand shows, but you know,
- 3:05Speaker 2: I guess with all the practicing and all that other stuff,
- 3:08Speaker 2: like you know, maybe it's something like that.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And yeah, I don't know that that kind of I
- 3:13Speaker 1: kind of think about that sometimes because I don't know
- 3:16Speaker 1: what it is.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I feel amazing and and if and I sound great,
- 3:20Speaker 2: if I can say, if I can say that without sounding.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Like an eagle.
- 3:24Speaker 2: It really feels good and and we're excited to come
- 3:28Speaker 2: back to Australia. Finally, it's been way too long to
- 3:31Speaker 2: uh to to show you what we got.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, we can't wait. It has been a while.
- 3:38Speaker 4: And you mentioned you did mention before that you guys
- 3:40Speaker 4: have never had a hiatus in like over two decades.
- 3:43Speaker 3: How have you guys managed that?
- 3:48Speaker 2: I don't really have an answer. We just kept going,
- 3:51Speaker 2: you know, it just never stopped. We we there was
- 3:54Speaker 2: never a point where we said, okay, we needed like
- 3:58Speaker 2: we need to take some time away, like okay, let's
- 4:02Speaker 2: not talk to each other for six months or something
- 4:04Speaker 2: like that, We're taking a year off like that never
- 4:07Speaker 2: happened that. We just never had that conversation. It was
- 4:09Speaker 2: just like cool, we did this, like what's next. And
- 4:12Speaker 2: I think the longest like true break that I ever
- 4:16Speaker 2: remember us having was like three months, and I know,
- 4:22Speaker 2: and during that three months it was like kind of
- 4:24Speaker 2: like time like we were Okay, let's do some writing,
- 4:26Speaker 2: you know, but it wasn't even really time off. And
- 4:29Speaker 2: also during that that time off was I found out
- 4:32Speaker 2: that my girlfriend was cheating on me. So that was
- 4:35Speaker 2: like a miserable, like feeling worthless three months of my
- 4:38Speaker 2: life too. So Okay, I've gone way too I've said
- 4:42Speaker 2: too much, but you know, it's it's so it's it's
- 4:45Speaker 2: funny though. Yeah, Like I don't know, we just I
- 4:47Speaker 2: guess some bands maybe get to a point where they're
- 4:49Speaker 2: so burned out that they're like, I just need we
- 4:51Speaker 2: just need this time off. But like, honestly, I think
- 4:54Speaker 2: if I had like a year off of No Silverstein,
- 4:58Speaker 2: I think it.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I think i'd be I am miserable.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know if I would enjoy that really,
- 5:06Speaker 2: you know, I don't know.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I mean maybe.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Maybe at some point, you know, we'll you'll catch up
- 5:10Speaker 2: with us a little bit and we'll need it.
- 5:12Speaker 1: But so far, two and a half decades, we're good.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Yeah, that's amazing.
- 5:17Speaker 4: And so it's obviously a testament too to how close
- 5:20Speaker 4: you all are as friends and people and business partners.
- 5:23Speaker 3: I suppose as well.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we're all of those things, you know, And
- 5:28Speaker 2: and I think that's I think that's important. You know,
- 5:31Speaker 2: I think I've always said that, you know, we're not
- 5:35Speaker 2: best friends, like you know, I see some bands it's
- 5:39Speaker 2: like funny, you know, they'll they'll come home from tour,
- 5:43Speaker 2: like a six week tour where it's like, oh man,
- 5:46Speaker 2: it's like a grueling tour, and then the night they
- 5:48Speaker 2: come home, they're all hanging out at the same bar
- 5:51Speaker 2: with like all the same friends, like they're all part
- 5:53Speaker 2: of it, and it's like.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Man, I think you need a little bit of space.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:58Speaker 2: No, And like I like, I love each and every
- 6:01Speaker 2: one of my band members, and we have our own
- 6:03Speaker 2: relationship and they have their own relationships with each other,
- 6:07Speaker 2: and like, you know, and.
- 6:09Speaker 1: It's it's it's just cool.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Like it's just I just feel like it's great and
- 6:14Speaker 2: we have a great respect for each other, you know,
- 6:16Speaker 2: and all that stuff. And then you know, once a week,
- 6:18Speaker 2: we we get on a zoom call.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Like this and we we just chat.
- 6:22Speaker 2: We catch up and whether it's like what's going on
- 6:25Speaker 2: in our lives or just like you know, what's going
- 6:27Speaker 2: on with the band. You know, we just kind of
- 6:29Speaker 2: do that and yeah, it's just a good feeling and
- 6:33Speaker 2: nothing is like too dramatic ever. Yeah, and uh yeah,
- 6:38Speaker 2: I think we're just all really happy in what we
- 6:42Speaker 2: do in our band.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Sounds really healthy too, relationship wise. As you mentioned, to
- 6:47Speaker 4: spend some time apart from each other, but then you know,
- 6:50Speaker 4: I always come back and be cool with each other obviously.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I really do think so, you know, And and yeah,
- 6:59Speaker 2: it's it's it's really it's really good.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Yeah that's awesome.
- 7:02Speaker 4: And looking back, what moment stands out as the most
- 7:05Speaker 4: defining in silver Stein's careers?
- 7:08Speaker 3: I know that's a tough one.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Big questions, Yeah, the big question, the most defining moment.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Hmm maybe for you.
- 7:16Speaker 2: I you know, this is going to sound like a
- 7:20Speaker 2: bullshit answer, but it's really not. And I'm going to
- 7:23Speaker 2: tell you why. So.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I grew up and I never thought I was.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Going to be like a professional musician or anything like that,
- 7:32Speaker 2: Like that was never even an option. I love music,
- 7:36Speaker 2: I love playing in bands, I love playing shows, but
- 7:40Speaker 2: I never even thought like I would be a touring
- 7:42Speaker 2: musician or whatever. And then Silverstein we started getting a
- 7:46Speaker 2: little bit of you know, a little bit of hype.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I was going to university, like trying to get my
- 7:52Speaker 2: degree for science, and we got signed, right, and I
- 7:58Speaker 2: was like, okay, cool, so we're on Victory rec It's
- 8:00Speaker 2: a big label. This is like a big deal. So
- 8:02Speaker 2: I'm gonna quit school for this. But you know, I'm
- 8:05Speaker 2: probably probably gonna be We're probably gonna put out one,
- 8:07Speaker 2: maybe two records and break up because that's like what
- 8:09Speaker 2: all my favorite hardcore bands did.
- 8:12Speaker 1: And then, you know, the band got bigger. The band
- 8:14Speaker 1: got bigger.
- 8:16Speaker 2: And during this time, believe it or not, I was
- 8:21Speaker 2: still doing like correspondence classes in school. Like we had
- 8:28Speaker 2: sold like one hundred thousand albums, and we were touring
- 8:32Speaker 2: like playing, And let me tell you what's really funny
- 8:35Speaker 2: is that the moment that I realized.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Hmm, I think I'm good with this.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I don't think I'm gonna be going back to school
- 8:47Speaker 2: was the first time that we came to Australia two
- 8:50Speaker 2: thousand and five. Because when that was a really like
- 8:55Speaker 2: earth shattering moment for.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Us, we flew how far we have to you have
- 9:01Speaker 1: to fly? I you've been to America before, it's a nightmare.
- 9:04Speaker 1: And we were.
- 9:04Speaker 2: We flew all the way there and we're like, no
- 9:07Speaker 2: one's gonna know our band, Like we were like we
- 9:10Speaker 2: got a free trip, like we're pulling the wool over like.
- 9:14Speaker 1: We were really and back then it wasn't the internet
- 9:16Speaker 1: was differently.
- 9:16Speaker 2: You know, we weren't even know how many tickets they
- 9:18Speaker 2: sold and we landed and they're like yeah yeah. And
- 9:22Speaker 2: and our first show I'll never forget was in Brisbane
- 9:26Speaker 2: and uh and they're like, yeah, it's I think it's
- 9:30Speaker 2: going to be sold out. Well what yeah yeah, uh
- 9:33Speaker 2: oh yeah it's sold out. And we're like, what are
- 9:36Speaker 2: what people like? And we played the show we did
- 9:39Speaker 2: that was back when you did like an eighteen eighteen
- 9:41Speaker 2: and under show and then like over eighteen whatever you
- 9:45Speaker 2: did like two shows and they were both crazy and
- 9:48Speaker 2: they were both sold out, and we were like, how
- 9:51Speaker 2: do people know us? Like we are so far away
- 9:53Speaker 2: from home. I guess we have records that like, I
- 9:56Speaker 2: guess we have a distributor, but how is this happening?
- 9:59Speaker 2: And at that moment I was.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Like, wow, we this is like crazy. I don't even
- 10:05Speaker 1: know if we'd been to Europe yet. Yeah, we'd been
- 10:07Speaker 1: to the UK, we'd been to the UK, but I
- 10:09Speaker 1: don't even think we've been to like mainland Europe yet.
- 10:12Speaker 2: So the fact that the fact that we we, I
- 10:15Speaker 2: just realized like it's like, Okay, this isn't just a
- 10:18Speaker 2: couple people that care about a CD that's in like
- 10:22Speaker 2: in the US and Canada, Like this is global and
- 10:26Speaker 2: that really that really did affect me my mindset. And
- 10:29Speaker 2: I think that when I got home from that tour,
- 10:32Speaker 2: that's when I like said, Okay, I can probably put
- 10:34Speaker 2: these books away and and I never did another correspondence
- 10:37Speaker 2: class after that.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Sorry, mom, oh wow, that.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Is insane And that's so cool that you know, as
- 10:44Speaker 4: an Australian we have that connection.
- 10:46Speaker 3: For you, that that was that moment that you kind
- 10:48Speaker 3: of realized it was.
- 10:49Speaker 1: It was just such a huge moment for us.
- 10:50Speaker 2: And like after we did that that Australian tour, just
- 10:53Speaker 2: to talk a little bit more about that, we finished
- 10:57Speaker 2: the tour and it was with destroy all Lines.
- 11:01Speaker 1: They booked it. And this is back when they were
- 11:03Speaker 1: like real small, you know.
- 11:04Speaker 2: I think they'd only brought like they brought in Berlin,
- 11:06Speaker 2: I think and maybe come back kid and then us
- 11:10Speaker 2: and it was this much smaller thing and we felt
- 11:13Speaker 2: like they were like our family. And I was like sad,
- 11:16Speaker 2: like Bronwyn and Nigel and I forget who was there
- 11:19Speaker 2: at the time, Like we it was like they were
- 11:22Speaker 2: like family members. We were leaving and I was like sad,
- 11:24Speaker 2: like I had like tears in my eyes, like leaving Australia.
- 11:28Speaker 2: We felt such a connection to it, and it was
- 11:31Speaker 2: also like by far the best wur we'd ever done at.
- 11:33Speaker 1: That point, and we were like, well, can we come back?
- 11:35Speaker 1: Can we come back? Can we come back next month? Practically?
- 11:38Speaker 2: And I think we did come back a little bit
- 11:40Speaker 2: too much after that because we couldn't wait.
- 11:42Speaker 1: But but it.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Was I think we came back two thousand and five,
- 11:45Speaker 2: two thousand and six, two thousand and stuff. But but
- 11:49Speaker 2: you know, it really was, and it still is like
- 11:54Speaker 2: my favorite place to tour, and just we always just
- 11:58Speaker 2: feel so loved and treated so well there, and our
- 12:01Speaker 2: fans are just so excited that we're there.
- 12:04Speaker 1: So it's amazing.
- 12:05Speaker 3: You're gonna make me cry. I'm so happy to hear that.
- 12:09Speaker 3: That's so lovely.
- 12:11Speaker 4: I'll just ask, off the top of your head, what
- 12:13Speaker 4: is your maybe your favorite place in Australia.
- 12:15Speaker 3: You've been to, or favorite experience in Australia.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Oh, that's a hard question. I remember one time, where
- 12:26Speaker 1: are you based?
- 12:27Speaker 3: Okay, so sort of New Sydney. I'm in a rural
- 12:30Speaker 3: area called Mudgee.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Okay, I am not not aware of it. I do
- 12:35Speaker 1: remember this one time.
- 12:36Speaker 2: I might have been in that first tour and bron
- 12:38Speaker 2: will let me drive the van on the wrong side
- 12:40Speaker 2: of the road or the right side of the road
- 12:41Speaker 2: for you guys. Left ye, and I got to drive
- 12:45Speaker 2: from Melbourne to Adelaide.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Oh wow.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I remember it was just such a beautiful drive.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And I don't know, it's just it's really nice down
- 12:53Speaker 2: there in South South Australia. And I just always remember
- 12:58Speaker 2: that moment and just you know, like it's just crazy
- 13:01Speaker 2: to like look out and see the beautiful scenery and
- 13:04Speaker 2: like kangaroos and ship like on the side.
- 13:06Speaker 1: It's just great. It's crazy.
- 13:07Speaker 2: It's like such a surreal place. So you know that
- 13:10Speaker 2: I just remember that that moment specifically. And also the
- 13:13Speaker 2: first time we went out to Perth too, and a
- 13:16Speaker 2: friend of mine like showed me this, like because you
- 13:19Speaker 2: can go up this hill and like look over the
- 13:20Speaker 2: whole city and this is just like so beautiful. And
- 13:26Speaker 2: and of course like uh when we played up a
- 13:29Speaker 2: Byron Bay and the first time we were up there,
- 13:33Speaker 2: we stayed at Winston from Parkway Drives parents house.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Yeah, we slept on the floor in his garage.
- 13:41Speaker 2: He was on tour, he wasn't even there and his
- 13:43Speaker 2: and his parents like took us in and his dad
- 13:46Speaker 2: made me avocado toast. Is the first avocado toast I
- 13:48Speaker 2: ever had, too, I've never.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Had it before. I think aust to that one.
- 13:54Speaker 2: And yeah, and yeah, it's just those those are just
- 13:57Speaker 2: a few moments among so many, you know that that
- 14:03Speaker 2: that I have. And I have like probably like seven
- 14:05Speaker 2: or eight photos of me holding a koala too. Uh,
- 14:10Speaker 2: of course from loan Pine, which I guess doesn't Isn't
- 14:12Speaker 2: there anymore you can hold?
- 14:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know if it's loan Pine still, but
- 14:16Speaker 4: there's I know that was around for ages and there
- 14:19Speaker 4: is still heaps of places that you can still do that.
- 14:22Speaker 4: Oh okay, I'm sure you're all koala out.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm good now. Yeah.
- 14:29Speaker 2: I still like feeding the kangaroos though, that's like that's
- 14:31Speaker 2: kind of dope.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Yeah, like they come around and.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Me eat out of your hand and I still like
- 14:35Speaker 2: that part. But yeah, I'll leave the qualas alone.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, Look, I've got to talk about the albums.
- 14:42Speaker 3: I'd love to chat to you all day about all
- 14:44Speaker 3: of this because it's so interesting.
- 14:47Speaker 4: But we've got Anti Bloom and Pink Moon both releasing
- 14:50Speaker 4: this year.
- 14:50Speaker 3: How did you approach splitting the songs between the two albums.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Uh, yeah, it was. It was tough, you know.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I think we had, like I've said this in numerous interviews,
- 15:02Speaker 2: but we had so many songs. We went in with
- 15:04Speaker 2: twenty five songs that we couldn't just make a single album,
- 15:09Speaker 2: and our drummer had the idea to do it into
- 15:12Speaker 2: two records, and I love the idea for a lot
- 15:16Speaker 2: of reasons, but specifically, there were two album closers that
- 15:21Speaker 2: I was really worried about because I couldn't imagine them,
- 15:24Speaker 2: any of them not being closers.
- 15:26Speaker 1: So that when we had two albums, I was like, great,
- 15:29Speaker 1: now we can put one on one on one on
- 15:30Speaker 1: the other. So that was easy. That was an easy one.
- 15:33Speaker 2: And then I had two distinctive and different ways that
- 15:37Speaker 2: I wanted to start the records, one being Mercy Mercy,
- 15:42Speaker 2: which is like an out of the gate, fucking smasher,
- 15:45Speaker 2: and the second album is a completely different approach to.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Those to those to that record starting.
- 15:53Speaker 2: So that was kind of like we had those ones
- 15:56Speaker 2: figured out and then it was sort of Okay, where's
- 15:58Speaker 2: the rest of it going? And I think another thing
- 16:02Speaker 2: was we really wanted to save a couple of songs
- 16:05Speaker 2: for the second album, and I think maybe we save
- 16:08Speaker 2: too much because I think the second album might be better.
- 16:11Speaker 1: But we're really happy with both.
- 16:13Speaker 2: And you know, it's been really cool that we've been
- 16:15Speaker 2: able to put out like four singles.
- 16:17Speaker 1: For the first record records out.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Now we can put out more singles, and it's kind
- 16:21Speaker 2: of like just a whole year long of music coming
- 16:24Speaker 2: out and at the end people are going to have
- 16:28Speaker 2: two pieces of work that I think are our strongest,
- 16:32Speaker 2: and yeah, it's really it's really exciting.
- 16:34Speaker 4: It is so exciting as a fan as well to
- 16:37Speaker 4: keep up and listen to what's coming out next. And
- 16:40Speaker 4: you know what is really impressive too, is that this
- 16:44Speaker 4: it doesn't feel half asked, like you guys really have
- 16:47Speaker 4: put out songs.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Like I first heard Mercy Mercy and I.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Was like, oh my god, Like it's not just another
- 16:53Speaker 4: song by Silverstein or anything. It's like, no, these guys
- 16:55Speaker 4: put in efforts.
- 16:56Speaker 2: If you could be a fly on the wall Angelo
- 16:58Speaker 2: when we're making songs, you would be like the fucking
- 17:03Speaker 2: shit that they are spending time arguing about that, like
- 17:07Speaker 2: no one will notice. Yeah, like it we're crazy people
- 17:12Speaker 2: in the studio, crazy crazy, crazy people about the finest,
- 17:17Speaker 2: tiniest details. And the thing is is like all those
- 17:21Speaker 2: little details add up. Yeah, yes, no, one doesn't matter.
- 17:24Speaker 2: But when you start talk about like, you know, ten
- 17:27Speaker 2: or twenty in every song, like it does, it starts
- 17:30Speaker 2: to do that and we're perfectionists and.
- 17:32Speaker 1: You're but you're right.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Nothing is half asked, nothing is like yeah, whatever, I
- 17:36Speaker 2: don't care, no one, everyone has an opinion. And then
- 17:38Speaker 2: we go through every one's idea. We go through, we
- 17:42Speaker 2: try everything until we finally say, okay, yeah, this is
- 17:46Speaker 2: the one and we kind of have to we almost
- 17:48Speaker 2: have to getanimously agree, which can take time. But that's
- 17:54Speaker 2: that's the thing is we're we're absolute psychos and perfectionists
- 17:59Speaker 2: about about the music. And that's I think probably a blessing. Yeah,
- 18:04Speaker 2: even though at the time sometimes it feels like a curse.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, no, definitely, it definitely feels like that. How
- 18:11Speaker 4: you've described that, it is a collaborative effort that like
- 18:13Speaker 4: every little detail has been thought of.
- 18:16Speaker 3: That's what my I think when.
- 18:18Speaker 2: I hear Anti Bloo, there's no doubt it has been
- 18:22Speaker 2: and yeah, and it's yeah, there's a lot of there's
- 18:25Speaker 2: a lot of steps along the way, you know, there's
- 18:27Speaker 2: the writing step, there's the recording step, there's the you know,
- 18:31Speaker 2: the mixing step, and ever and the mastery, every all
- 18:34Speaker 2: of it it comes into play, and it's all we're
- 18:37Speaker 2: very hands on, yeah the whole time.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Yeah, and just for my own interest, was mostly mostly
- 18:43Speaker 4: recorded first.
- 18:45Speaker 3: And have you played it live?
- 18:46Speaker 2: We've never played it live. In fact, we've only ever
- 18:50Speaker 2: played Skin and Bones and Confession live so far, so
- 18:55Speaker 2: that we have got a lot of other songs that
- 18:57Speaker 2: we hope to bring into the fold at some point.
- 19:00Speaker 2: And what's it recorded? I can't remember. I don't think
- 19:02Speaker 2: it was recorded first. I can't recall exactly. But we
- 19:08Speaker 2: we typically we would do like three songs a week
- 19:10Speaker 2: kind of or four maybe, and we would kind of
- 19:13Speaker 2: like say, all right, these are the four we're gonna
- 19:14Speaker 2: work on this week, and then we would sort of
- 19:16Speaker 2: tackle them piece by piece and then at the end
- 19:19Speaker 2: of the week we'd have kind of four of them done.
- 19:21Speaker 1: And and we.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Didn't we didn't do like anti Bloom first and then
- 19:25Speaker 2: because we didn't know which songs we're going to be
- 19:27Speaker 2: on which record yet, Yeah, until like we started to
- 19:29Speaker 2: figure it out as we went. But going when we
- 19:32Speaker 2: when we went in on the first day. We didn't
- 19:33Speaker 2: even know what songs we were going to record. We
- 19:35Speaker 2: had like twenty five and we we didn't even know
- 19:37Speaker 2: how many we were going to record. So it was
- 19:39Speaker 2: a process, but it was also really looking back on it,
- 19:44Speaker 2: it was tough, but I'm really glad, glad we did it,
- 19:48Speaker 2: and it's I feel great about it.
- 19:50Speaker 1: I feel like better about it than any of our records.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 19:54Speaker 4: So starting I guess, starting way back when you guys did,
- 19:57Speaker 4: what are some of the things you've noticed from then.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Then to now.
- 20:03Speaker 4: I mean that's a really broad question, but maybe within
- 20:07Speaker 4: yourselves as a band, how.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Have you grown?
- 20:12Speaker 1: Hmmm.
- 20:15Speaker 2: I think we've developed, or I at least I can
- 20:17Speaker 2: speak for myself. You know, I've developed a lot more
- 20:19Speaker 2: confidence in what I can do, my abilities. I think
- 20:24Speaker 2: I'm not scared of anything anymore. I think there were
- 20:27Speaker 2: times when I really was, you know, like I just
- 20:30Speaker 2: didn't know if I could I could do whatever I
- 20:32Speaker 2: was trying to do, and and I shied away from it.
- 20:35Speaker 1: When now it's like, I'll try.
- 20:37Speaker 2: And I remember even Sam saying that to me, our producer,
- 20:41Speaker 2: Sam saying, I love you because you're willing to try
- 20:45Speaker 2: anything and it's true, and I am and uh and
- 20:51Speaker 2: I don't. I wasn't always like that, so you know,
- 20:53Speaker 2: I think I've developed that and I've I've developed a
- 20:56Speaker 2: new a newfound confidence. And it's interesting because, like you know,
- 21:00Speaker 2: I think most bands when they get to the twenty
- 21:02Speaker 2: five year mark.
- 21:04Speaker 1: You think of them declining in some way.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Whether it's like their creative creative output might not be
- 21:10Speaker 2: as good as their old stuff, or like maybe they're
- 21:13Speaker 2: the guys have a little more trouble hitting the notes
- 21:16Speaker 2: or whatever. And I really feel like we have just
- 21:19Speaker 2: done this and it's like a really honestly cool feeling
- 21:24Speaker 2: to be able to honestly say that.
- 21:27Speaker 1: But it's not because it's because.
- 21:30Speaker 2: We've worked hard and because we've there's been no shortage
- 21:32Speaker 2: of work and like like you know, no hiatuses do
- 21:36Speaker 2: just go go go and continue to work on a craft.
- 21:39Speaker 2: And yeah, it's an awesome feeling, and it's exciting that
- 21:44Speaker 2: more people want to see us live than ever because
- 21:45Speaker 2: our shows are as big as ever too, so it
- 21:48Speaker 2: all it's.
- 21:48Speaker 1: All working out.
- 21:49Speaker 2: And you know, you caught me at a really good
- 21:51Speaker 2: time in our career to speak to this, because it
- 21:54Speaker 2: really does feel like it's it's like kind of the
- 21:57Speaker 2: pinnacle right now.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Yeah, that's so awesome.
- 22:00Speaker 4: And as you mentioned, bands after a certain point usually
- 22:03Speaker 4: do drop off a bit. It's very rare that they
- 22:06Speaker 4: still have that energy and tenacity and produce really good
- 22:09Speaker 4: songs by the way, after all that time.
- 22:12Speaker 1: So absolutely, yeah, Testimate.
- 22:15Speaker 4: And what was it you did mention Sam before? What
- 22:18Speaker 4: was it like working with him on both albums?
- 22:22Speaker 1: He's great. You know, he's our old friend from Toronto.
- 22:26Speaker 2: He lives in La now and you know, I guess
- 22:30Speaker 2: this is his third album he's done with us. Yeah,
- 22:33Speaker 2: now third in a row if you include these as
- 22:35Speaker 2: one album or if you don't, it's four.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:38Speaker 2: You know, it's cool because he was like this kid
- 22:41Speaker 2: in our scene, Like he's quite a bit younger than me,
- 22:44Speaker 2: and he was like thirteen years old playing in a
- 22:47Speaker 2: band with like my friends, like some of my and
- 22:49Speaker 2: they're older than me, my friends. He was like this
- 22:52Speaker 2: little kid that they've got in their band. He's like,
- 22:54Speaker 2: they're like, he's awesome. He's like an awesome kid, and
- 22:55Speaker 2: he's like an awesome drummer. And I knew him a
- 22:58Speaker 2: little bit. I kind of knew him as like like,
- 23:00Speaker 2: why is there a thirteen year old kid? Yeah, maybe
- 23:03Speaker 2: maybe he was like fourteen, but yeah, like his mom
- 23:04Speaker 2: would drive him to shows.
- 23:05Speaker 1: He couldn't drive a car or anything, and uh, and
- 23:09Speaker 1: I didn't really know him. And then you know, he became.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Like obviously he's super talented, became like a big record producer,
- 23:16Speaker 2: and you know, he just he I watch him continue
- 23:19Speaker 2: to grow too, you know, with his talent and his
- 23:23Speaker 2: art and his capabilities. Each record we do, each song
- 23:26Speaker 2: we do, you know, he gets better and better too.
- 23:29Speaker 1: So yeah, he's he's incredible. I can't. I can have
- 23:34Speaker 1: nothing but amazing things to say about him.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Insane.
- 23:36Speaker 4: Imagine watching this little kid on a drum set and
- 23:39Speaker 4: then all of a sudden he's a huge producer.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Like that's crazy.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Yeah, it is.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Any artists or bands that have really impressed you lately that.
- 23:49Speaker 2: You're listening to, Yeah, there's two bands I'd like I'd
- 23:52Speaker 2: love to to reflect on real quick. They're both bands
- 23:56Speaker 2: we've toured with this year, and they both have albums
- 23:59Speaker 2: coming out on May sixty.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Both of them do on the same day on the
- 24:03Speaker 1: same day.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Arms Length band from Canada, uh just up the road
- 24:07Speaker 2: from US.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Awesome awesome.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Like, let's just call him an emo band, really really
- 24:12Speaker 2: cool band everybody needs to check out. And probably the
- 24:15Speaker 2: craziest band out there right now doing the wildest music
- 24:18Speaker 2: is the Callus Dow Boys from Atlanta, Georgia. Yes, it's
- 24:21Speaker 2: like everything from like synthpop to freaking death Corps. It
- 24:25Speaker 2: is like wild this this what this band does both
- 24:28Speaker 2: radically different. But my musical tastes are all over the place.
- 24:31Speaker 2: So yeah, there's just there's a couple of recommendations for
- 24:34Speaker 2: for some stuff that's coming out super new not even
- 24:36Speaker 2: out yet.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Sacredy my Life thatsh And if Silice you guys are
- 24:43Speaker 4: cover sorry you guys are going on tour with real friends.
- 24:46Speaker 4: If you guys could cover any of their songs live,
- 24:49Speaker 4: which one would you pick?
- 24:50Speaker 2: And why, Oh my god, that's a really really tough question.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I'm going to have to pull up their Spotify here, yeah,
- 24:58Speaker 2: because yeah, well they what a band, right, I mean
- 25:02Speaker 2: they also have they have like they're kind of a
- 25:05Speaker 2: cool band too because they have like their old stuff
- 25:07Speaker 2: and then have their new stuff. And yeah, it's like
- 25:11Speaker 2: really hard to pick. Yeah, but I mean I don't know,
- 25:15Speaker 2: late nights in my car, that's a pretty good song.
- 25:18Speaker 2: I think that's from their first record, maybe that one.
- 25:21Speaker 2: I think we could do that. Just okay, I'm going
- 25:24Speaker 2: with that.
- 25:25Speaker 4: And how about what made you guys decide to choose
- 25:29Speaker 4: them to come along on tour with you?
- 25:31Speaker 2: Uh, well, we were doing the tour with them next
- 25:34Speaker 2: month in the in the US, and it kind of
- 25:37Speaker 2: just worked out with our schedules. They're there's a band
- 25:39Speaker 2: that we've really admired for a long time. And uh,
- 25:43Speaker 2: I kind of think they're they're kind of a cool, like,
- 25:45Speaker 2: you know, not quite super nostalgic in terms of like
- 25:49Speaker 2: you know, oh they were coming up with us in
- 25:52Speaker 2: like two thousand and.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Three, but they're still kind of like that middle middle
- 25:56Speaker 1: era and I just I just think they're great and
- 26:00Speaker 1: they write with great lyrics.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Yeah, and I don't actually don't know their history of Australia,
- 26:04Speaker 2: how many times they've been down there or anything, but yeah,
- 26:08Speaker 2: we're really happy to bring them along.
- 26:09Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah we could.
- 26:11Speaker 4: And last few questions, post hardcore and emo have had
- 26:15Speaker 4: major resurgences in recent years.
- 26:17Speaker 3: What do you think keeps those genres so timeless?
- 26:22Speaker 1: The lyrics?
- 26:24Speaker 2: And I think that that's I've really seen that a lot,
- 26:27Speaker 2: you know with you know, like a festival like when
- 26:30Speaker 2: we were young, and you know, people just coming out
- 26:33Speaker 2: and drove sport and younger people discovering this music.
- 26:37Speaker 1: It's because the lyrics are.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Timeless and it isn't like a genre like you know,
- 26:43Speaker 2: like hair metal, Like people want to compare it to
- 26:44Speaker 2: hair metal, Like yeah, sure we both had bad haircuts,
- 26:47Speaker 2: but they were also singing about like.
- 26:52Speaker 1: You know, prs and faster women. It's like bullshit stuff
- 26:56Speaker 1: that has no emotional like content or anything.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Whereas like I was in my bedroom, you know, singing
- 27:02Speaker 2: about heartbreak and that is eternal. That is unfortunately timeless,
- 27:07Speaker 2: and I think that people are always going to be
- 27:09Speaker 2: drawn to these to these songs and then this subject
- 27:12Speaker 2: because it's like it has that and it's raw and
- 27:15Speaker 2: it's real.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, definitely, great answer. I really liked that. I
- 27:20Speaker 3: really I don't think I've heard that before, but I
- 27:22Speaker 3: think you're so right.
- 27:23Speaker 4: It is the lyrics, because I'm like, why to this
- 27:25Speaker 4: day am I still hugely into emo music And you
- 27:29Speaker 4: know what.
- 27:29Speaker 2: It's not the fucking recording so that a lot of
- 27:31Speaker 2: the records are terrible, and like that's that could be
- 27:33Speaker 2: a hurdle for people to get past. Yeah, you know,
- 27:36Speaker 2: but it's it's definitely yeah, it's definitely lyrics.
- 27:39Speaker 4: Yeah, and because you guys were sort of the pioneers
- 27:42Speaker 4: of the you know, emo movement at the time, who
- 27:46Speaker 4: are your influences?
- 27:49Speaker 1: Well, we were influenced by a lot of stuff. And
- 27:51Speaker 1: there's a band from our hometown called Grade.
- 27:54Speaker 2: They were also on Victory Records, and they were kind
- 27:57Speaker 2: of like the I think the band that we took
- 28:00Speaker 2: the most from, both in terms of our sonic sound
- 28:03Speaker 2: and also just like sort of their ethic, like they
- 28:05Speaker 2: were they went to Europe, like they did all this stuff,
- 28:07Speaker 2: you know, and was like, cool, well, if they did it,
- 28:09Speaker 2: maybe we can too. So, you know, it was bands
- 28:12Speaker 2: like that and the get Up Kids, and you know
- 28:16Speaker 2: some of the like the hardcore like a Poison Well
- 28:19Speaker 2: was a big influence.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Hot Water music.
- 28:22Speaker 2: It's some of those bands just just it's kind of
- 28:25Speaker 2: all over the place. But then again, our music is
- 28:27Speaker 2: kind of all over the place, so you know, it
- 28:30Speaker 2: kind of makes sense.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Yeah, a few different influences there. And you guys have
- 28:36Speaker 4: been in a band so long. Who's the most likely
- 28:40Speaker 4: in the band to miss sound check? Because they were
- 28:42Speaker 4: off chasing a kangaroo or something equally chaotic.
- 28:44Speaker 2: In Australia, all of us we don't sound check. We
- 28:48Speaker 2: literally did not sound check anymore.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Really, no, we don't. We don't need to. We have.
- 28:54Speaker 1: What happens is our sound guy records the show from
- 28:56Speaker 1: the night before.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Yeah, he plays it through the PA and he's says, cool,
- 29:00Speaker 2: that sounds good.
- 29:01Speaker 1: And then we don't have to be there.
- 29:03Speaker 3: My god, that's nuts.
- 29:05Speaker 2: And it's great because I don't have to wake up
- 29:07Speaker 2: at whatever time and have to sing and like maybe
- 29:09Speaker 2: blow up my voice or whatever.
- 29:10Speaker 3: So yeah, oh damn, that's awesome, Shane.
- 29:14Speaker 4: I'm running out of time. Zoom's going to kick me off,
- 29:16Speaker 4: but it's been amazing to talk to you.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Yeah, no, thank thank you so much, Angela, And I'll
- 29:20Speaker 1: see you in maybe Sydney.
