- 0:43SPEAKER_01: What is it about that person that piqued your interest?
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: We all would like to be more interesting.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: In today's episode, my co-host Pete and I explore this topic and share ideas about how we can all be a bit more interesting.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Pete, welcome back to the show.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Rock, thanks for having me.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Great to be back.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: It's great to have you here talking about this topic, right?
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: So I love it.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: So, Pete, do you remember some years ago there was this ad campaign for Dos Eki Spear?
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: The most interesting man in the world.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: And it is just hilarious.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: It just, oh my gosh.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Where did it go?
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was just so funny.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was a wonderful, very clever ad campaign.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: And for the listeners who are not familiar, it was uh a campaign in which they created this fictional character who was sort of like a you know combination of like Ernest Hemingway and James Bond.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: You know, he was dapper and dashing and and uh you know very manly.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: He did all sorts of adventures, and they had these like a montage of video clips showing him doing these extraordinary things, and then there'd be like a voiceover saying, you know, kind of talking him up about how amazing he is.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: And then at the end, it you know, they always ended with uh them saying he is the most interesting man in the world.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Rox just real quick.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Um you know, just because my memory's terrible.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Um, I went back just to to watch a few of those or or read a few of those, and I could not stop laughing.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Oh, there's some of them.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: They're great.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: You know, can I say a couple of them real quick?
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, yeah.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Sharks have a week dedicated to him.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Or the one that hits me home because you can't pronounce my name.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: If he were to mispronounce your name, you would feel compelled to change it.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: I've I've thought about it many times.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Yes, I love that.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: And then yeah, one of my favorites that stuck with me is he speaks French in Russian.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: So again, and you just waited for that line, you know?
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: And so, so you know, I when these this ad campaign came out, I was kind of obsessed with it.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: I loved the campaign.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: I remember that, and I loved the the idea of like, what does it mean to be interesting?
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: You know, how could you know it's like, am I interesting?
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Like, how can I be more interesting?
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, clearly, we're not gonna be that fictional character who's like larger than life, etc.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: But I started giving that a little bit of thought back then.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: I I don't know, it probably didn't impact you the way it did me.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: No, I remember you.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: You really, really it was so compelling to you.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: And I was like, this is great, Rock.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: It really is.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, if you just start thinking about it, you know, it's it's that's that's a very successful campaign, then, you know.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Well, it didn't make me think about drinking the beer, which is means it's not that compelling a campaign.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Great point.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: It made me think about like self-improvement, you know.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: And you got right on that.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guess.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: But so so so yeah, so I started thinking about like what does it mean?
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: You know, what does it mean to be interesting, you know?
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I guess that's kind of the central question of this episode.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: So, Pete, what do you think makes someone an interesting person?
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: When you suggested that, I was like, where where do you go with that?
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: You know, and and and again, you know, I was just thinking about it and thinking about what really makes someone interesting.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And to me, interesting is so subjective, right?
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Um I've said many times on this platform, I just love meeting new people, even if it's for 20 minutes, right?
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Because to me, they're a whole new story, and to me that's what's interesting, you know, someone who has knowledge that I don't, you know, amount of interesting, unique conversations that I've had with people.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: It it it is my energy.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: And you know, real quick, I was as I was thinking about this, I think you were with me.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: It wasn't that long ago.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: We were uh uh in the city, and uh we just you know met somebody walking their dog and you know, started talking.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: I remember her, yeah.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: And I remember how interesting that conversation was, you know, just passing the street and we start talking 15 minutes, and then we see them again in the park and continue the conversation.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: And when when you're in the city and you're doing so many great things, and I get back and I remember a conversation with someone I've never met nor will see again, that to me is an interesting person.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: So what was it?
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: You know, what is it about a person that's that's makes them an interesting one?
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Well, I think you know, it's it's it's you know, they arouse curiosity.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that's I think that's gonna be a word we keep coming back to over and over in this episode.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Agreed, agreed.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: That's that's what does it for me.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: And you know, another thing, really, you know, this person, as with everyone else I find interesting, you know, held my attention.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: You know, I wanted to know more.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: And so remember, you know, to be interesting, you really need someone who is interested, you know, and and and to me, you know, that's how I get it is from someone that I don't know anything about.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: I don't know, you know, with their story, but then just listening and speaking in that is it's to me that's what's interesting.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: And and you know, I have kind of a similar um experience.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: You know, in my career as a doctor, uh, I met thousands and thousands of people, you know, and and you you really, you know, you you you pull away all the layers with with people, and you know, you're talking to them on a deep level about things that are important to them, things they're afraid of, things about their life.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: You know, all people are interesting, you know.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: I found that, you know, I find that also in my coaching business, you know, it's like when when people really bear themselves to you and talk about their real life and what their thoughts are and etc.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: All people are interesting.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I think I want to I want to say that up front.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: I think that we're all interesting, and we how can we become more interesting?
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: So that that's you know, but for me, an interesting person is someone who's curious, you know, who's interested.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Like I think you said it before.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: You um a person for a person to be interesting, they need to be interested.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they need to be interested in things.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: So the more things you're interested in, the more interesting you become.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Agreed.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: And you know, it doesn't have to be an intensely deep knowledge of everything, you know, it could it could be something that you're just so passionate about and always want to continue to learn.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: You know, one of the one of the really, really cool parts of my job is I get to give a lot of tours, right?
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: And you know how much I love it, you know, because it's it's it's you know a passion of mine to be with people, tell people, express my love for my subject, but have to part, and I and I tell them right from the start, this is a conversation.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna learn from you, you know what do you see, what do you feel?
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: I want to take that back also because not just a one-way tour, you know.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: So I want to be interested as well as trying to be interesting.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, and I I think that's something that is true.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, interesting people are interested in other people and sharing what they know, right?
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: You know, it's kind of like this idea of you know, if if a tree falls in the forest, uh you know, no one's there to hear it, did it make a noise?
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: You know, right?
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Like you can't really be interesting in a vacuum, you know.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: Like you can you could be some hermit who does all these interesting things, but how interesting are you if nobody knows about these things?
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: So there's a certain element of generosity that's perfect.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Honestly, until we started, you know, talking about this and looking at this, I I wasn't sure if I could be interesting, honestly.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: You know, and then and and then looking at the the fact that you know it's it's it's really again, we'll use this word constantly, you know, it's really about being curious, you know, and and and wanting to know more and learning and listening, you know, and that's when I realized that oh, you know what?
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Maybe I am interesting.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: Well, you definitely are.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: You're one of the more interesting, or let's just say, one of the most interesting people I know.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: You know, if we, you know, we talk about just like the different jobs you've had, the you know, your different like pursuits, you know, outside of work, you and your wife, you know, rescue animals, and yeah, you um do work with um, you know, people with disabilities and and you're you know, you're you have this deep passion for sports, and you know, you have a lot of things that make you interesting.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: You're a great conversationalist with a great sense of humor.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: So yes, you are but it's funny, you you don't think about it until you know you you really don't, you know, you just think that you know you're getting through, you're you're you're doing your part, but then you're like, you know what?
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and and it's it's it's so powerful to be able to to sit and just have conversations and just I mean, I I don't fear's not the right word.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Uh I worry about running out of time to be able to learn new things or to be able to read something or to be able to watch something, yeah.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: You know, and and and you know what I mean?
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: It's it's that oh I definitely know what you mean, you know.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: As you get to be a certain age, you know, you know your your your time is limited, you know.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: It's like it may be a while, but it's not like 50 more years, you know.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: So you you you can run out of time, and but that's that's important, you know.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Imagine if you got through everything you wanted to ever know, then you're like got 10 more years, like that would never happen.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: It's a great point.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: That's yeah, very well done.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: So I think um this is the part of the show where you have to tell me I'm interesting, or otherwise, why did we even do this episode?
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't have any notes on I give me and I just just joking, Pete.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: No, I know that's what that's what we do.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: But no, and you know it's so funny is I think that's how we've had this this friendship for for 50 years.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Um we are very different people in some ways, but in other ways, we are we're twins, you know, and and and our passion for learning, our passion for connection is is incredible.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Um in and we're so similar in that.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: We would so much rather have a conversation with others than talk about ourselves, you know, and and just look at all of your and accomplishments are in quotes.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: You know, it's it's all that you've done as a career, all that you I mean when I have a Mount Rush more of parenting, it's definitely you and Susan, you know, all the interesting things that you've done, but you know what?
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: You would so much rather sit by the fire, listen to somebody, and listen to their stories, not even say a word.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: You just wait and you listen and then you add to it.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: And it that's a skill, that's a gift that not everyone can do because there's so many people, and I get it, it I I'm guilty of it too.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Where I'm thinking about the next thing I'm gonna say, and you're keep talking, you know, you're telling your story, and I'm all right, okay, I'm gonna answer it this way, I'm gonna do it this way.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: That to me is not interesting, so yeah, yeah.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Well, that you know, that is interesting that you bring it up because I knew a guy who on paper should have been fascinating.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: He really should have been fascinating.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: He had a lot of hobbies, he had a pretty interesting job, you know, but all he did was talk about himself, yeah, and and what he was, you know, it's like, oh, I did this, I did that, I'm working on this.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: It's like, and you you just like he he didn't really need you there, you know, he could have had that conversation in front of the mirror, you know, right, right.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: And he was he was not interesting to be with.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: Isn't that something you mean he could have all the experiences in the world, but because of that, you know, because you know what you don't live life on paper, so it's yeah, yeah.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: So I'm curious if you can like identify besides me, uh like someone who's really interesting, like a historical figure, a popular figure, something like that.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: You know, I tried to think, you know, about that, you know, who do I find interesting?
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: And the list is too long, and it's for all different reasons.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: But if we're talking pop culture, you know, and there's different people for different reasons that I find them interesting.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Some you might know, some you might not know, but just even a quick list without going too too too in depth about why I find them interesting.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: Again, and when I give a tour, it's the same thing.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: I'll say something, I'll say something brief, and if you're interested, you look it up.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: You keep you know, you keep learning.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: But some people in in popular in quotes culture that I would say, I would I would I would love to sit down and and talk and and listen to people like um Robin Williams, you know, a a comedic genius to me.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Um I would love to sit and talk to Prince.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: You know, you know my type of music, and it's not that, but he's just to me an absolute genius, and I would love to hear, you know, his his story.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: Personally, one of my favorite all time, and and uh you know, and I've mentioned him before, but uh lead singer of the clash, uh Joe Strummer, you know, he just a was a passionate, you know, brilliant, intelligent, you know, um wrote about you know poetry and and and social norms and and that and um yeah to me just a very deep person who I would just be like you know with my mouth open just listening and take absorbing it all in.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: And I also thought about you know, I was trying to think of a sports figure, because you know me and you are just sports, sports, sports, sports, sports.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: You know, you might you might laugh at this one, but I would really love to sit and and uh listen to Shohei Otani.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: You know, when when you see someone who not only to me is the best out there now in so many different ways, you know, he's an amazing pitcher, sorry young candidate, obviously an MVP, but also you could see he enjoys playing, you know, and he enjoys the camaraderie and he enjoys the fans.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: And to me, how do you that's a complete person, at least that we see on the field.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: I would love to know his feelings about it.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: How about you, Rock?
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Do you have anyone?
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: I was thinking about um the world of sports too, trying to come up with somebody, and I believe that the most interesting um there's there's two people who I think are the most interesting people in sports, uh, and one of them is Aaron Rodgers.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: I think I think of Aaron Rodgers, you know, as you know, he's one of the all-time best quarterbacks in history, you know, and but he's also this fascinating guy off the field who's constantly trying to like go deeper into consciousness and and yeah, challenging, you know, challenging himself.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: He's yeah, does these nutty things like what was that, the darkness challenge or something where he goes and like lives in a like a I don't know what, like in total darkness for a weekend?
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like that's pretty interesting, right?
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: Like, what is that about, you know?
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: When when it's somebody like that, would you have questions waiting for them, or would you just sit there and and and just let it flow?
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I mean it'd be both because I would ask him a question and then let it flow and see what you know where he's going with with it.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: But you know, like if you can compare him to say Tom Brady, you know, Tom Brady is the best quarterback ever.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: But but I I don't think he's like super interesting, you know.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: He's compared to Aaron Rodgers, no, right, you know, and then there's a uh a woman uh that I don't know if many people in the audience know her of her, but her name is Temple Grandin.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: And I actually saw her speak one time.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Uh she is this woman on the autist autism spectrum who who first became known uh when Oliver Sachs wrote about her in one of his books.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: And um she is this a really fascinating person, you know, like she's she's on the autistic spectrum and she loves to try to explain how she sees the world given her neurodivergent situation.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: Uh and she's become really well known in working with um the design of different things for animals, like for um, you know, like barns and like enclosures and and things like that.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: And um, and and so I think she's pretty interesting.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: Um, and and then uh of a historical figure, yeah.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: Um, the two like total, you know, total renaissance men that I think of are Leonardo da Vinci and Benjamin Franklin.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, those two people were they had so many skills, interests, passion for life, for you know, curiosity, for everything.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: So, so those are the kind of people that I find interesting, you know, like super interesting, because it's like they they are um diverse, you know, like it's they're no they don't just do one thing, you know.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: No, I love it.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: And and anytime you think of, you know, history, you know, Da Vinci, Franklin that you're mentioned, they had nothing before them to work off of, you know, they're they're they're they're coming up with these ideas and these thoughts and these, you know, and it's like someone has to start it and and just geniuses like that that did.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: So amazing.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Those are great choices, Rock.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, thanks.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: Thanks.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: So so what you know, what are like the traits, you know?
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: So that I I I always like in this podcast to have some things that the listeners can say, okay, I can apply this to my life, you know.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: I want to be more interesting.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Here's a way to be more interesting.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Like, like for me, we've said it, you know, a couple of times already, but curiosity, yeah, that's that's a trait.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: Like if if you want to be more interesting, you need to be more interested in things.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: You need to be more curious, you want to learn about stuff.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: What do you think about that one?
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: I I think that's that's the key.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: You know, and I and I didn't know it was the was the key until we started this, you know, and and you know, just really digging deep into it.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: We could have started you know this whole thing is with curiosity, because that is that's that's it.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that it that is it, and and it kind of uh dovetails with this other trait with that I think is important, which is passion.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Yes, you know, a person is you know passionate about something.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I tend to prefer those people who have liter like kind of varied interests, but if you're passionate about just one thing, yeah, and you dive deep, deep, deep, deep into it, well, that's pretty interesting too.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it really is.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: So so having Having passion.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: So I think passion and curiosity go hand in hand.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: Agreed.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: In everything, you know.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: And it could be in anything.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: You know, it doesn't have to be one thing.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: You can be passionate about anything and just take it to the next level.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: Another thing that is, you know, when I started thinking about like what are the traits of an interesting person.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Um, being your authentic self.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: I think is really important.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like and it's not always that easy, but no, people are terrified to be their authentic self.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: I love that word.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: That is that is so true.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: You know, I think we, you know, people are afraid to like stand out or be like not like the the rest, not like the crowd, but being not like the crowd makes you more interesting.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: You know, so whatever you're you you you've got a a passion for, a curiosity about.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: Maybe, maybe you're really interested in like um, I don't know, like horror movies or something.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like I'm not interested in that, but go for it, right?
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: Like get deep into it, you know.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: Oh, absolutely.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so be your authentic self.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: Now that's something that I had the opportunity and the privilege as a doctor and a coach to meet people's authentic selves because they let their guard down and and tell you who they really are, and then they are actually way more interesting when they do that than when they are have their like protection up, you know, be out in the world, you know.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: Little little vulnerability there, yes, vulnerability, absolutely.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: You know, we've touched on this, but always learning and experiencing life, you know, that's part of that curiosity and passion.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: And going back to the most interesting man in the world commercials, the way he ended every ad was he said, What did he say?
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: Stay curious.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: No, he said, Stay thirsty, my friend.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: Thirsty, my friend.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Because he was selling beer, you know.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: See, I saw it as somebody who just, you know, wanted to keep you uh tied to his interesting behavior, but no, I get it.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: He did, he said, stay thirsty, my friends, which was about selling beer, yeah, but it really is stay thirsty for life, stay engaged, stay, you know, constant.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Don't say I'm done.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: You're never done.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love that.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, don't say I'm done.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: And and you know what that is when you said that, I just think of you and and all the things that you do.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: It's like non-stop, and it is amazing.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: So, another thing I think is really a good a trait, you know, if if you're you can be an interesting person, but you can become more interesting if you're better at telling stories.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, yes.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: Instead of saying, I did this, I did that, like make it come to life.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: Yes, paint a picture, yeah.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: And then you know what, and I you know, I hate to keep uh talking about you, Rock, but um please keep talking when you tell a story, it could be as simple as you know, you're traveling and you went to the market, or you're traveling and you went on a 60-day hike or whatever it is.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Um, I see the topography, I see the colors, I see the landscape, I see all that as you're saying it, because you paint that picture, you know, and and and there there's so much more to that than saying, you know, I hopped in my car, I went a mile, and I got there, I got what I needed, and came back.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: You start it, and sometimes longer than needed, but you start it and and paint a whole story, which is is that's a gift.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think you know that the the ability to tell a story um is how you get you kind of get people interested to to listen to what you're saying.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: So uh if you're not that good at it, there are ways to get better.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: And so if you want to be more interesting, keep that in mind.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: Storytelling.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: And it's very powerful in in the world of business too.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: You know, when I coach people, I talk about like, yeah, if you want to influence your, you know, people that, you know, because I'm a leadership coach, you know, it's like if you want to influence the your team, tell them a story, don't just tell them something, tell make it us into a story somehow.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: Um and so, you know, the other thing that you know I thought of is like, and and this is something we just were talking about, is like you can have a broad set of interests, hobbies, topic, you know, hobbies and things you you love and are curious about, or you can have like one or two and get like really into it.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and both ways are are interesting, and neither one is better than the other.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: You know, I think about you know, one of my uh favorite baseball players ever um was Ichiro Suzuki.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, and Ichiro was uh, you know, he was basically all his whole life was baseball, but to me he was fascinating.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: You know, he loved he would just like like I was sad for him when he um had to retire because that was his whole life.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: And I think he's like, you know, like still playing and coaching in Japan right now.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I've seen that recently.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, he was a he was we would go to many games, right?
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: And whenever I got to see him play, all of you know bang practice or you know, anything before game, I would just be glued to watching him, you know, to see everything he did.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: And it was just he was such a consummate consummate a professional who went about his business, right?
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: But you could tell he was having fun and other players were watching him and how he did it.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's it's uh unbelievable, unbelievable player.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so yeah, so if there's something you're interested in, just do it.
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: And don't worry what other people think, because that's being your authentic self, you know.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: If if you really like um, I don't know, like knitting, just do it, you know, even if you're a man, right?
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: Do it.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: Why not?
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: You're that interesting guy knitting on the subway, you know.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: My god.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: I mean if you were that person, right?
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: So um, yeah.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: Any any other um traits that that you can think of that to be more interesting?
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: You know, um, yeah, a few things, you know, real quickly.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Um to me, an interesting person um shows empathy.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: You know, it's uh to to me empathy is is is something that I gravitate to.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: You know, I am more apt to to listen and follow and digest from someone who has the ability.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: And it's it's and it's real.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: It's a it's a real sense of empathy that you get from people.
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: And to me, those are that makes an interesting person.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: I always say, you know, like uh, you know, I'm not here for me, you know.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: I I I I love other people and doing for other people.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: And and I think that is a reason why, you know, I have so many friends, I make so many friends, it's so easy to get to know and and enjoy people because I'm about them, you know, I'm about everybody else.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: And uh it's it's great for me, and I hope it's it's great for others too.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: You that is it's a great, it's a great observation, empathy, and you definitely practice it in all these different things that I alluded to earlier, you know, the different uh, you know, in your work and but also in your free time.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: Like uh I but I put free time in quotations because you don't really have free time, you have work time and time, volunteer time, it feels, you know.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: Right, you're right.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: And and you know what?
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: I let's um put one on the books for uh can we do a a retirement uh podcast coming up so I can get as much help as I can give.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we can talk about that.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: Appreciate it because that's scaring the heck out of me.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: Um, another uh couple more, I'll go real quick.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: Humility, you know, it's it's again, and all these are very similar, and you would think it's a no-brainer, but who are you gonna listen to?
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: You even said yourself, you know, you can have all these stories, you can have all these, but if you're not there being humble and listening to others and and and taking feedback, I I think the odds of being interesting in quotes are are are very slim.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: It's like, are you a blowhard?
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: Right, right, or are you are you someone who's sharing, you know?
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: It's like, are you humble about what you're doing?
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: Sharing is a great word.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yes, yes.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: You're you know, you you might be the expert, but you know what?
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Everyone has a boss.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: Humor to me, it makes someone very interesting.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: I am automatically gravitating to someone.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: If they made me smile, if they made me have a little butterfly in my stomach, if they gave me goosebumps, if they did something and they did it through humor, guess what?
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: You're getting it in my attention, you know, and and humor is subjective.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: You might find something funny, I might find something funny, I might find something funny today.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: It's not funny tomorrow.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: But if you're a humorous person, you you've got me.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: You know, I think that's that's a great treat to be interesting.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: That's a that's a great one.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: You know, and lastly, you know, and and it's very similar to empathy, humility, is uh something that you wouldn't think it would be so hard.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: Kindness, uh just being kind to people.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: Again, it could be simple acts of kindness, it could be larger acts of of you know just being kind to somebody.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: But again, if if it should not be hard.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: Kindness should not be hard.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: If you could be that kind person, guess what?
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: You've you've got an army of people following you, listening to you, and just gravitating to you because you know what to me, kindness is interesting.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well said, you know, I think that especially when you you're in a situation where you don't see a lot of kindness, it's interesting when someone is, you know.
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, so that that's our list of traits for people who are would like to maybe be a bit more interesting.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: Remember what I said earlier.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: We are all interesting.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: How can we be more interesting?
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: And part of it is, I think, you know, is the curiosity, the passion, but being that authentic you, you know, there's only one you, and and and being so unique, you're interesting.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Just just let your light shine, you know.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: Be just be the person that you are.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: So that's it for this part of the discussion.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: I hope that you all got something out of it, and we're gonna move over to Dr.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: Rocco's Rex.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: Now it's time for Dr.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: Rocco's Rex.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: Dr.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: Rocco's Rex.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: Now it's time for Dr.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Rocco's Rex.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Well, my recommendation for this week is learn a new skill.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: It can be anything, it doesn't matter.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: This is about you being your authentic self.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: If you're interested in juggling, just learn to juggle.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: It doesn't matter if you're 50, 60, 70 years old, just learn.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: Why not?
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: That'll make you more interesting.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: Whatever that skill is, learn a new language, learn how to, you know, use a compass, learn how to change your oil in your car, learn how to knit.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: So that is my recommendation for this week is you know, maybe you always wanted to play an instrument.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Just learn, just do it.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: Today I have uh a great conversation with Rock about being interesting, and I came up.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: There's so many quotes, but two really struck me.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: First one is by Sir Francis Bacon Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: Secondly, Einstein.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Albert Einstein said, I have no special talents, I am only passionately curious.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: Well, that's it for today's show.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for joining us.
