Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Health New Zealand's released after pressure from news Talk SETB.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I might add staffing levels across the public health system.
- 0:06Speaker 1: It looks at basically every single nursing shift in the
- 0:09Speaker 1: public system over twenty twenty five, were they staffed to
- 0:13Speaker 1: Health New Zealand's targets that's the question. Well, twenty five
- 0:16Speaker 1: percent didn't have enough staff, forty four percent were overstaffed,
- 0:21Speaker 1: and thirty one percent were staffed at target. Malcolm R.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Holland is patient voice alter hat oh Chin and joins
- 0:27Speaker 1: me this morning. Malcolm, Good morning morning. Ryan, Health New
- 0:30Speaker 1: Zealand says this data is not actually very useful. What
- 0:32Speaker 1: do you make of it?
- 0:34Speaker 2: I tend to believe the nurses to be honest over
- 0:36Speaker 2: a bureaucrat. Anybody who spent time in ed lately or
- 0:42Speaker 2: in the hospitals will know that the staff they are
- 0:46Speaker 2: overrun and there's just not enough of them.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Will we ever have enough nurses? Because it doesn't matter
- 0:52Speaker 1: who's in power, it doesn't matter who's in charge, it
- 0:55Speaker 1: seems like we never have enough nurses.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I think it's getting particularly bad though, Ryan. I think
- 1:00Speaker 2: you're right. I mean, you know, how much is enough?
- 1:03Speaker 2: And you could say that both labor and national and
- 1:06Speaker 2: guilty of it. But it seems to me over the
- 1:08Speaker 2: past two to three years that the situation's become particularly
- 1:12Speaker 2: bad and you only need to take a quick look
- 1:14Speaker 2: at media to see the reporting that's coming through about
- 1:16Speaker 2: patient arm that's been caused as a result. So I
- 1:19Speaker 2: would say that things are getting worse.
- 1:22Speaker 1: So what is what are we going to just get
- 1:24Speaker 1: more nurses.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Get more nurses, pay them so that we can be
- 1:29Speaker 2: competitive with Australia. We know that many of our workforce
- 1:33Speaker 2: go over there. We need to have a realistic conversation
- 1:37Speaker 2: and debate about how much we value our nurses and
- 1:41Speaker 2: our doctors for that matter.
