- 2:44morning, Welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave. Here are you.
- 2:46I'm doing fine, Thanks for being here great. Thank you. It's
- 2:49been a few months since you made your announcement to run for Secretary of State.
- 2:53We had you on the show at that time, and I know you've
- 2:54been Chris crossing the state since then, how's the campaign been so far to
- 2:59give you an idea, sixteen counties in the last twelve days. Yeah,
- 3:05and keeping a full time job going at the same time. But it's it's
- 3:08been good. It's been a reunion of sorts, you know, for my
- 3:12days as state Republican Party chairman and county chairman up in Montegelia County again,
- 3:17it's been like a reunion seeing folks just on Sunday afternoon again in Upshur County
- 3:23and Lewis County, and it's quite frankly, it's amazing to see the size
- 3:29of the crowds coming out for Lincoln Day dinners and that sort of thing.
- 3:31By the way, Kennall County is having their Lincoln Day dinner this Saturday,
- 3:37the twenty seventh, and they're still accepting ticket purchases for one more day at
- 3:42KCREC dot net. But these things even in the small counties. Wetzel County,
- 3:47one hundred and twenty people were out, so you see a number of
- 3:51the folks that I was involved with years ago and new faces. There's the
- 3:58Republican Party is alive well. And that's the subject of Hoppy's commentary. If
- 4:02you get a chance to read it today about the costa with the most recent
- 4:06voter registration numbers. I'm going to get into that a little bit later on
- 4:10a good chance you may want to go read that because exactly what Hoppy is
- 4:13talking about. And I'll get a plug in for Putnam County because they have
- 4:15their Lincoln Date dinner on Thursday night. We'll be there Thursday night, Sleepy
- 4:18Hollow too. Can't let Kenaw County out do Oh no, yeah, Putnam
- 4:23County always has two hundred and fifty almost three hundred people, so they do
- 4:26well. So as you're out on the campaign trail, Chris, and as
- 4:30you said, you've seen the Republican Party grow, I mean as somebody and
- 4:34I'm gonna get into this letter somebody who's southern, from southern West Virginia.
- 4:38To see the growth of the Republican Party in West Virginia's is truly remarkable.
- 4:42And of course, you know, as you said, former GOP party chair,
- 4:45even then, and I know you had high hopes for the party,
- 4:48but did you think that it would grow like it has? We knew it
- 4:51at one point, you know, we didn't know when, but we knew
- 4:55at some point, everything would go Republican just like it had gone Democrat,
- 5:00and that it is done. You your southern West Virginia counties that are all
- 5:05flipping you know, red Republican red. Now I think we have forty five
- 5:11counties where the Republicans hold the majority. And that's a complete switch, you
- 5:15know, one hundred and eighty degree turn since I got started, you know,
- 5:20as state party chairman in two thousand. Why do you think that is?
- 5:25Chris? Why do I think what is? Why do you think that
- 5:28we've seen such a decided change in all these the flipping the parties going back
- 5:33to too, I mean because this predates Trump. I mean this was actually
- 5:38starting before Trump. That certainly helped add added added to it. But why
- 5:43do you think that we've seen this switch? I think people like to point
- 5:46to various political figures, but I would tell you the people of West Virginia
- 5:49have always been conservative. They've been a hard scrabble, hard working conservative people.
- 5:56And we now have representatives that match the people in the district, you
- 6:02know, you know, single member districts now will allow the Republican Party to
- 6:09match the people that they represent, you know, for the next thirty or
- 6:14forty years, but it's been an effort of you know, back in early
- 6:17two thousand, we realized we had to challenge every one of the one hundred
- 6:21House of Delegate seats, every one of the seventeen state Senate seats, and
- 6:25as a state party chairman, we recruited those folks and when we were able
- 6:30to match up campaign dollars with challenge in every one of the seats, that
- 6:34was the magic for us because the Democrat Party didn't know where we were focus
- 6:40in our effort, and we would focus on ten or twelve seats at a
- 6:44time, and it took, you know, eight or ten years, and
- 6:46we've built the Republican majority, the Conservative majority in both the House, the
- 6:50Senate, every statewide office except Joe Manchin and he'll retire in November. We're
- 6:56talking to Chris Water, Republican candidate for Secretary of Staved Dave Allley Chilling five
- 7:00eighty lie brought to you by Bridge Valley. If you're interested in improving your
- 7:02company's IT workforce, you want to know Bridge Valley offers custom tailored IT training

- 7:17Today, as you're out campaigning for Secretary of State, Chris, what are
- 7:20you hearing from the voters? So I'm on the campaign trail, the voters
- 7:26on the campaign trail. It is tough as candidates to get people engaged in
- 7:32the race. You know, we think this campaign's you know, coming down
- 7:36to the end. But what I've learned from voters is most people are just
- 7:41now starting to pay attention. So I know that sounds crazy. Candidates out
- 7:45there that have been running campaigns for a year and I've been in the race
- 7:48since January, but most people are just now starting to pay attention. So
- 7:53I'm encouraging other candidates to you know, now is when they need to make
- 7:57the push and make sure they're messages heard. Now. You mentioned some of
- 8:01the Lincoln Day dinners that are covered up Pydnam County Thursday night, Knawa County
- 8:05on Saturday night. Are there any debates, Chris or forums that are planned
- 8:09that you know of involving the candidates for Secretary of State? Not that we've
- 8:13been invited to. I haven't heard anything. The closest thing that we came
- 8:18to a debate was a candidate forum in Harrison County. They had an excellent
- 8:22program on a Saturday morning. We went for about two hours and there was
- 8:26some good back and forth. But most of the times, these events all
- 8:33across the state, you got three minutes to speak. There's so many candidates
- 8:37running, you got three minutes to speak, and you're fortunate if they have
- 8:41a question answer period. Most of the public, Chris, when they think
- 8:43about the Secretary of State's office, they only think about elections, and elections
- 8:46are what gets the most interest. But somebody who used to used to work
- 8:50in that office, I realized that there's a whole lot more to it than
- 8:54just elections. I mean, you got it depends, you know, from
- 8:56time to time it changes. But you got maybe five seven people in elections,
- 9:01but you got you know, twenty five or twenty five, twenty or
- 9:03so in the business division. So when you're preparing to run for this office,
- 9:09and of course your brother is the current Secretary of State, but how
- 9:11how do you what's the education process like? Because you got you got to
- 9:16know not just elections, but you also got a no business and you've got
- 9:18no charities and notaries and what's the education process like that? Well, in
- 9:22each one of my stump speeches, if you will, I get the opportunity
- 9:28to talk about there are only six employees in the Secretary of State's Office that
- 9:31focus on elections. There are three times that many in the Business Registration Office.
- 9:39I've had the opportunity and we're proposed right here this morning in the business
- 9:43one stop that was created by the you know, the Secretary of State's Office
- 9:48and Secretary Mike Warner, that we create the Office of Entrepreneurship. And that
- 9:54can be done without hiring anyone else, Dave. It's not going to increase
- 9:58costs. It's a matter of training those folks down on the boulevard for this
- 10:01position. But it's going to allow entrepreneurs the opportunity to more government contracts,
- 10:09to expand their business, cut red tape, and streamline, but keep a
- 10:13real focus on entrepreneurs for the you know, thirty years prior to being appointed
- 10:18by President Trump to lead rural development in West Virginia, I created business and
- 10:22enterprise centers in Montegalia County and Mineral County and Barber County. Those were all
- 10:28private, no support from government. But I realized what is needed to help
- 10:33a small business get started. And I want to bring my business experience,
- 10:37not only from the days of creating business and enterprise centers, but also my
- 10:41time at Rural Development and now as executive director of the West Virginia Economic Development
- 10:48Authority, and bring that to the Secretary of State's office. Let's talk about
- 10:52elections instead of West Virginia. Chris has one countless awards for election security.
- 10:56And you know you hear all the jokes about election fraud and state as I
- 10:58mentioned from southern West Virginia. I've heard them all, but truth is reality
- 11:03now is in West Virginia. It's just not happening, at least certainly not
- 11:07to the scale that it used to happen. How do we keep that street
- 11:11going? Well, the work quite frankly, that you and others did in
- 11:15the Secretary of State's Office and working with the fifty five county clerks. You
- 11:20know that they've removed four hundred thousand names from the voter rolls. Those are
- 11:24people that have died, moved to another state, convicted felons. Well,
- 11:28we're still going to have people convicted of felonies, moving to other states,
- 11:33dying. Those roles need to be kept up. The Secretary of State's Office
- 11:37needs to provide the tools necessary for the county clerks to do their role.
- 11:46What makes Chris Warner the best candidate for Secretaries DAK I think the last thirty
- 11:52five years of being involved in elections, day of working with the Republican Party
- 11:58as county chairman, State chairman, Republican National Committee man. But then to
- 12:03mix in and add in the work of my business experience. You know,
- 12:09I'm going to give just one example. Kevin O'Leary from Shark Tank was in
- 12:16about a month and a half ago and we met for several hours talking about
- 12:20businesses that he wanted to bring to West Virginia and a meeting with Commerce and
- 12:24Department of Economic Development, the Economic Development Authority. The Secretary of State's Office
- 12:30should have been right there in that meeting answering the questions he wanted to know,
- 12:35specific questions about businesses located here in West Virginia. It would have just
- 12:41helped that meeting go on and they should have been a part of that.
- 12:45I think now because of my role at EDA, that we would be able
- 12:48as a newly elected Secretary of State to have a seat at the table and
- 12:54be able to help answer questions that are needed on the spot. You know,
- 12:58we pride ourselves on being able able to pull everybody together, including the
- 13:01Governor's office and Commerce and Economic Development. When we have guests in from out
- 13:07of state that are looking at locating here, I think we need to add
- 13:11the secretary of State's office as well. Where can people learn more about your
- 13:13campaign, It's Chris Kris Warner. Warrwb dot com and give me the final
- 13:22thirty on why his people should vote for Chris Warner. I think it's the
- 13:26business experience, it's the election experience over the last thirty five years. But
- 13:31most importantly, I would bring to this office the last thirty five years of
- 13:39conservative values that I've been working and fighting for. There's never been any equivocation
- 13:45here. I'm the conservative Republican candidate for Secretary of State. Wish you the
- 13:50best of luck in the campaign. Chris, thanks a lot for being here.

- 17:22the show with us today. I think, Stephen, good morning. You're
- 17:26one of the hardest working journalists out there, and you called yourself going on
- 17:30vacation last week, you and the lovely Jessica sailing the ocean blue. But
- 17:34while while you were out at sea, you are also writing news, no
- 17:37risks, no rest for the wicked man. Well, I can't turn it
- 17:42off. I'm two OCD for that. So I get it. I get
- 17:47it, and I don't want to be caught flat footed when I get back
- 17:48from vacation. So I kept track of everything that was going on, even
- 17:52out in the middle of the Caribbean and on the eastern side of Florida,
- 18:00off the continental shelf. I was keeping track. I know you were,
- 18:03so a couple of endorsements. I want to ask you about. Governor Justice
- 18:07has endorsed former Delegate more Capital for governor Jess Yesterday, Senator Joe Manchin,
- 18:11who is not seeking another term as senator, Endorsedheey mayor Glen Elliott for the
- 18:15Democratic nomination for senator. We already know former President Trump has endorsed Jim Justice
- 18:21and the Republican race for senator. Senator hoppied at an informal poll Stephen yesterday
- 18:26on AX asking people how much difference endorsements make to the average voters in political
- 18:32races, and the results weren't surprising to me. Sixty percent of people informal
- 18:37poll on Next, sixty percent of the people said it didn't matter at all
- 18:40to them endorsements, thirty percent said it mattered a little, while just around
- 18:44twelve said it mattered a lot. Again, don't be a surprise to me,
- 18:47how about you, sir? Yeah? In general, I would agree
- 18:48with that. For example, I don't know if my newspapers are doing endorsements
- 18:52or not. Sometimes I have editors that would really love to just do away
- 18:56with it. There probably will be endorse I would suspect, but I don't
- 19:02know how much of an impact those really have. You see endorsements from unions,
- 19:07from political organizations, from businesses, things of that nature. I don't
- 19:11know how much of an impact that has. I do think certain endorsements do
- 19:15make a difference. Did the Trump endorsement make a big difference from Jim Justice?
- 19:18I think it did at one point. In fact, I would say
- 19:22this far out, I would imagine people forgot that Trump even did endorse because
- 19:26he endorse so early in no race. In the case say of more capital
- 19:30in Jim Justice. In the short term, I think that helps more capital.
- 19:33In the long term, it's going to depend that they do any campaigning
- 19:36together. And in the case of Glenn Elliott being endorsed by Joe Manchin,
- 19:41I do think that helps in that field to some extent as well. So
- 19:45I think there are short term benefits to it. Long term, it just
- 19:48depends on how you capitalize on it. What do you think about Glenn Elliott?
- 19:52And here's the reason I ask. I've had Glenn on the show.
- 19:55I've never met him in person. He's been long time a mayor of Wheeling,
- 20:00but I heard him on on Talk line a couple of weeks ago.
- 20:03And as far as Democrats go, Steven He's not the most left wing guy
- 20:07out there. He's more of an older I don't want to say old school
- 20:10Democrat West Virginia old school democrat, but he's more of a I didn't even
- 20:15want to say moderate, in the middle of the road. He's not a
- 20:18He's not far far left. I mean, does that bode well for him
- 20:22in the Senate race. It certainly doesn't hurt. He reminds me a lot
- 20:26of somebody I worked for for a couple of years, and that his former
- 20:29Senate President Jeff Kessler, Democrat out of Marshall County, who was the last
- 20:36Democratic Senate president before the Republicans took over in twenty fifteen. I think Glenn
- 20:41Elliott has some progressive tendencies. I think there are areas in that that can
- 20:45appeal to some people. I do think, though, being a mayor of
- 20:49one of the state's major cities, politics don't really play until at least partisan
- 20:53politics don't really they should anyway, And he can work with Republicans, he
- 20:57can work with Democrats. He knows when to reach across the aisle to do
- 21:00this one thing with say a Republican, and he knows when to do something
- 21:07progressive, and he knows how to balance those things out. And I've always
- 21:10said it takes a balance of conservative and in progressive ideals to some extent for
- 21:15a government to function. So I think on that account, he knows how
- 21:18to kind of turn both of those things on and off. Say Sack Shrewsbury,
- 21:22he's very much onto full progressive Bernie Sanders far left contingent. Doesn't know
- 21:27how to turn that off, and turning it off means compromising, and compromising
- 21:32as we know today is bad. You got to have that or Don blanket
- 21:36Ship, who I'm not entirely sure what he's running on, but he's kind
- 21:40of running as a Maga Democrat. You got to have somebody that can balance
- 21:44at Boffalo's factions, a little Blankenship, I mean, Steven, let's be
- 21:47honest. Mike, Chip's just run to piss people off. That's the only
- 21:49reason he's running. I don't know why he's running. Told you to make
- 21:53people running, But I looked at the campaign finance numbers just yesterday. For
- 21:57that he's given. The only money he has is about eleven hundred dollars in
- 22:02all the pardon me he gave himself Like, so Don Blanketship's got more than
- 22:07eleven hundred dollars in his couch cushions, No, kiddy, So I don't
- 22:10under if the goals just say the troll Mitch McConnell, who we all know
- 22:14that he hates. Yeah, can't do that for eleven hundred dollars. So
- 22:17I don't know why he's running. I had a conversation with him a couple
- 22:18of weeks ago. I mean, he's got ideas, but I don't know.
- 22:22Yeah, it's Steven Aldadas from Ogden Newspapers. Is here, Dave Allen

- 22:37dot com. Steve what I talked a little yesterday with former mayor Danny Jones
- 22:40on the show about advertising. Uh, and it would seem if you watch
- 22:45or listen to the ads from Republican candidates for governor, the only thing that's
- 22:48an issue in the state is the whole trans thing and who loves Trump more?
- 22:53Who Trump loves more? You kind of get that idea too, Ah,
- 22:56for sure, for sure. You know, we've talked a little bit
- 22:59about all the ads of Chris Miller's ran, practically putting out a new ad
- 23:02every week. He's got a new ad up today, and we've seen the
- 23:06amount of just sheer volume in favor of Patrick Morrissey in that race, including
- 23:12Americans for Prosperity. We've talked about the mailers and that sort of thing,
- 23:15door knocking. You know, that's all well and good, but I do
- 23:21think that at some point there is a tipping point where you can oversaturate and
- 23:26you can cause a situation where people start to block out, ignore mailer,
- 23:32throw it away, that sort of thing. And I kind of feel with
- 23:34at least the Morrissey campaign and the Chris Miller campaign, we may have reached
- 23:37the desensitization oversaturation point right now where I think people are tired of it.
- 23:44I think that's while you're starting to see the candidates put out kind of some
- 23:47at least somewhat more positive ads. Morrissey's got one out, I think as
- 23:51the day and I said Chris Miller has one out that's got like a little
- 23:53softer tone to it, a little bit more positive. They all still Trump,
- 23:56you know, talk about the Trump stuff, but I think they're trying
- 24:00to be a little softer now. I think you might see more of that
- 24:03going forward, because it's just been bombardment with this stuff. Yeah. Well,
- 24:07and you know, you wondered when they when tv ads first started running,
- 24:11you wondered, at what point are one of these packs going to go
- 24:15after the Chris Miller TV ads and of him, you know, and in
- 24:19its context, I mean, yeah, he had the blonde wig on and
- 24:23he was doing the Trump thing and whatever. But you gotta understand if you're
- 24:26probably if you're not from this part of the state and you don't constantly see
- 24:30those Dutch Miller ads, you may be watching it in Berkeley Springs going what
- 24:34the heck is this? You know, And but it's context. But I
- 24:38knew the minute that Chris Miller, who's been on the show and I considered
- 24:42to be a friend. As soon as Chris Miller came on this show,
- 24:45or as soon as Chris Miller announced he was running, I thought, well,
- 24:48they're going to go dig up the ads, and by golly, that's
- 24:49what they did. Yeah, Yeah, same here. I knew that was
- 24:52going going to happen because there's all sorts of fodder that you could have with
- 24:56that, because I mean, you're trying to sell cars and you do it
- 25:00with some humor, which is what Chris Miller has certainly tried to do or
- 25:04whatnot, which can be fun. But at some point, yeah, that
- 25:07was always going to come back to buy them a little bit. I have
- 25:11to think that they kind of knew that too going into it. So we'll
- 25:15see if it has a negative effect, particularly in places of the parts of
- 25:18the state. Eastern Panhandled obviously don't have a Dutch Miller dealership that don't see
- 25:22these ads and aren't used to what they're seeing, So maybe it might have
- 25:26an effect in the Eastern Panhandle. That's the thing to think about. Has
- 25:29this race on the Republican nomination for governor Steven Has it been as ugly as
- 25:33you thought it would be? Is it not really that ugly? Is it
- 25:37too ugly for repair moving forward? What do you think? I mean,
- 25:41I think the one person in the state above the fray on all this for
- 25:45the most part, has been more capital Other than a little he's kind of
- 25:48I think one of his ads he kind of got on the transgender thing too,
- 25:52But for the most part he's been positive. I think Patrick Morrissey and
- 25:56pro Patrick Morrissey groups certainly have tried to be very native, particularly in regards
- 26:00to Chris Miller. As we just talked about. Chris Miller has certainly put
- 26:04on the whole gambit against Patrick Morrissey, and it's been focused solely on that.
- 26:10And then when you come to Mac Warner, who's just kind of trying
- 26:12to find any type of pathway to get attention. You know, he had
- 26:17a twenty paid i think nearly twenty page presterlies complaining about the Justice endorsement of
- 26:22Capito, trying to bring Larry Puccio, famed or infamous lobbyist for Governor Justice
- 26:27and former Democratic Party chairman, former Mansion chief of staff into the freight because
- 26:32he donated to the More Capitol campaign. I got to tell you, someone
- 26:34who's written about Larry Puccio for off and off for a decade, if it
- 26:40was going to hurt people politically, it would have hurt Jim Justice in twenty
- 26:42sixteen. It didn't hurt him in twenty twenty and I don't think it's going
- 26:45to hurt Jim Justice or more capital in this election. But he's just trying
- 26:52to find any pathway to try to get himself out or pull somebody else down.
- 26:56And it is probably and I thought it was going to be. Here's
- 27:02the thing I think sometimes that we we have a tendency to forget and hear
- 27:07me out on this. I had an old radio boss one time, tell
- 27:11me said, people on the radio don't listen to the radio the way that
- 27:15the average person does. And I think that's probably true of any business.
- 27:19You know, you don't view it to say the same as as as your
- 27:23customers do you and I and others and Brad and a lot of the people
- 27:29that write this stuff, you know, whether it's with the gazette mail or
- 27:30whether any of the other publications that are out there, or Mark Curtis or
- 27:33whatever. We tend to view politics a little bit differently because it is practically
- 27:38our lives. I talked to eighty percent of what I talk about on there's
- 27:41seventy to eighty percent of whant to talk about on this show. I don't
- 27:45know that the average person. I mean, I had I was at an
- 27:48event last week, Stephen, and you know, the television, airways,
- 27:52radio, your post office box, online, whatever, you're constantly seeing ads
- 27:56for governor and the Senate race whatever. I had somebody seemingly very very intelligent,
- 28:03actually a couple of them last week, asked me who was running for
- 28:06governor. Oh no, and look, I don't I'm not saying that in
- 28:11a negative way toward them, right, I'm just saying they're not turned on
- 28:15yet. That we have a tendency to think that everybody thinks like talking heads
- 28:19like you and I do, and that's not necessarily the case. But oh,
- 28:23completely agree with that, Completely agree with that. That's why you guys
- 28:26stay plugged and you got to talk to people. And I think it explains
- 28:29some of the high undecideds that you see in these polls. Even the West
- 28:33Virginia Metro News wv pole rex repass poll came out at the beginning of last
- 28:37week. I mean, the undecides are still high. Today is the final
- 28:41day to register to vote or to update your voter registration prior to the primaries.
- 28:47I had to pull out my calendar. You could correct me if I'm
- 28:49wrong. I think early voting may start next week. First yeah, okay,
- 28:53there you go. So I mean we're just now getting a point where
- 28:56people are going to be able to vote. I think you're going to start
- 29:00to see people engage a little bit more. I think possibly people are going
- 29:04to tune in a little bit more. I have a feeling a lot of
- 29:07them are tuned out onto full just gambit of ads out there, So they
- 29:11may be tuning back in and they'll probably start making some decisions now on who
- 29:17they support. But yeah, we're all plugged into this, So we're watching
- 29:19We've been watching this for two years. Yeah, we're already thinking about you
- 29:23know. I mean people in our business are already looking ahead to like two
- 29:26years from now. Yes, you know, we're already thinking about that.
- 29:29I will say this, I think it's going to be interesting, and I'll
- 29:33be attending one of the political events here in a couple of nights. I'm
- 29:34interested to see how what the interaction is like in the with the with the
- 29:41candidates for governor for example. Oh for sure. Yeah, I mean at
- 29:45this point, I mean, they got to pull out all the stops and
- 29:49they got to get in front of people. I think that's what makes more
- 29:52capitals campaign at least interesting. They're all going out the dinners and Linked day
- 29:56events and that sort of thing, but more capitals certainly has hit the road
- 30:00out there. It's why that endorsement from Justice is going to be interesting in
- 30:03short term, it's good in long term. Unless they start campaigning together,
- 30:08I don't know if it makes much of a difference. And Jim Justice really
- 30:11hasn't campaigned. He hasn't had to. I mean, he's so far ahead
- 30:15at this point right now, he hasn't had the campaign. But he's going
- 30:18to have to actually start physically campaigning with more capital for that Endorsempait you think
- 30:23about the matchup, and let's just and I with all due respect to Alex
- 30:26Mooney, I mean, at this point, Jim Justice is so far ahead
- 30:30in the polls. I don't know that. I don't know if that's going
- 30:32to change. So let's say it is a matchup in the fall for the
- 30:34Democratic for the for the seat that the Mansion has now pretty much it's Jim
- 30:41Justice and Glenn Elliott in the fall. Who do how do you see that
- 30:44race? I'm not asking for a winner, but how do you see the
- 30:45race looking I don't I do think Glenn Elliott will make it competitive. Now,
- 30:52I think he's going to run into a lot of the same problems.
- 30:55We've seen this scenario before. We saw it in twenty twenty with Jim Justice
- 31:00Kennell County Commissioner Ben Silango, so we've already kind of had a preview of
- 31:03this to some extent. And I think Ben Selango Glenn Elliott, I'd say
- 31:07their politics is probably about similar as far as that as far as that goes,
- 31:11Ben Selango might be a little bit more democratically conservative, But I do
- 31:17think we've seen this preview before, and I think they'll keep it competitive.
- 31:21But I think there's too many advantages from Jim Justice for Glenn Elliott to overcome
- 31:30right now, unless something drastic hap and something with Jim Justice's health, which
- 31:33is really a possibility, you know, at his age and that you know
- 31:37his girth, if you will, And there could be other things too,
- 31:41There could be other business issues come up. He's big boned, big boned,
- 31:45big bone. So we'll we'll see what happens. But I do think
- 31:48it'll least be competitive, and I think he has the potential to get some
- 31:52money, maybe not from the nationals, but from the locals that will probably
- 31:56help him out a little bit too, So we shall see. How hard
- 31:59do you think that, I mean, Manchin gave the endorsement to Glenn Elliott
- 32:02yesterday, no surprise here. How much do you think, if at all,
- 32:06Joe Manchon has involved in this race come the fall, Joe Manchin I
- 32:09could definitely see probably going out to stump for Glenn Elliott. He did it
- 32:15for Ben Silango. There were several events that the Jim Justice on Jim Justice
- 32:20that Joe Manchin did. I think Joe Manchin will do everything within his power
- 32:24to help, but will it be enough, I don't know. Keep in
- 32:29mind he won in twenty eighteen against Patrick Morrisey by a round three points,
- 32:35that sort of thing. So and the voter numbers of you know, the
- 32:40registration numbers have changed even since then. I think it's going to be tough.
- 32:45But I do think that Jim Joe Mansion will do everything he can.
- 32:50But Dave Island showing five any life bright to you? Fired by Morgan to

- 32:54A couple things before we let you go, Steve and I have to say
- 32:57you and I may be kindred spirits when it comes to advertising mailers, candidates,
- 33:02candidates read my lips. Every single one I get goes directly in the
- 33:09trash. I don't even look at them. I couldn't tell when I see

- 33:45go for you. Maybe they'll put them on display someplace. Mine are going
- 33:49in the burn pit. Sorry, what are you looking at today, Steve?
- 33:52Well, we got the governor's briefend later on today, so we'll see
- 33:55what the governor has to say about whatever he has the to say about,
- 34:00because he has a lot to say. But when we ask him questions,
- 34:02he doesn't really have specific answers to any of our questions anymore. So that's
- 34:07it. I'm looking at some campaign finance numbers. I've got a big investigation
- 34:10I'm also working on, which I'm not going to tease a whole lot about.
- 34:14But yeah, it's gonna be like dropping a piano on somebody. All

- 38:31I did run for office and was elected to the Putnam County Republican Executive

- 38:43just because no one else wanted to run uh and I ran, but no
- 38:46no running running for offices, not for me. I don't think I've been

- 39:46election. He will be joining us tomorrow on the show, as will Kenawh
- 39:51County Commissioner Ben Selango, who's getting to be kind of a regular on this
- 39:54show. There's been a lot of the news involving the County Commission here lately.
- 39:59Ben was on the Sho show I think last Friday, and he was
- 40:01also on the show earlier in the week, but he will be on the
- 40:04show tomorrow. There's a lot of big news going on here involving the County
- 40:07Commission, City of Charleston. Of course, yesterday I had a chance,
- 40:13along with several other members of the media, to tour the old Macy's location
- 40:19at the Town Center Mall. The demolition work has already started, at least,
- 40:22well I guess the pre demolition so to speak. Like I speak like
- 40:25I'm an expert on demolitions, but I got to do some preliminary work to
- 40:30get ready for it, which will hopefully make way for the proposed new Capital
- 40:35Sports Complex. And I will say I have to admit it was a bit
- 40:39sad walking around the building yesterday because remember it was Kaufman's before it was Macy's.
- 40:50And I was actually texting with my wife and I was walking through the
- 40:53building there yesterday and she informed me that her first ever credit card came from
- 41:00Kaufman's and she got a set of Spuds Mackenzie glasses for signing up for a
- 41:06credit card from Kaufman's and some people are scratching had going who is Spuds Mackenzie.
- 41:15I was also joking with some members of the media what it was like
- 41:20to be a teenager and coming to the town Center with the waterfall and all
- 41:25the excitement, especially around Christmas time and all the food choices at that time
- 41:30during the food court area. You know, being a kid from southern West
- 41:32Virginia, we didn't get McDonald's in my hometown until I was in college,
- 41:38so that was in nineteen eighty nine. So the town Center at that time,
- 41:45especially with the completion of one nineteen, you know in the eighties,
- 41:49when you could get from places like Madison and Logan and Williamson in a short
- 41:53amount of time to Charleston. I mean, the town Center was just was
- 41:58just was everything, And uh it's sad. It's sad, really, and
- 42:02people wish it would go back. But as my late great grandmother used to
- 42:07say, you wish in one hand and you know what, and the other
- 42:08one and see which one gets filled up more quickly. Uh, the Charleston
- 42:12Town Center is not coming back to what it was not happening, no matter
- 42:16who owns it, and and there will always be a place for shopping malls.
- 42:22People that say that shopping malls are dead, I would say, probably
- 42:27go to the Huntington Mall. I was at the Huntington Mall on a Saturday
- 42:30afternoon a couple of weeks ago, and uh and it was thriving. It
- 42:34was, it was just booming. Uh and uh so so they're not all
- 42:37dead. There will always be a place. Even with online shopping, there
- 42:42is always a place for people who like to just go and look at stuff,
- 42:45you know, and kill a little time and grab something to eat and
- 42:47just walk around a little bit. Look at South Ridge and the shops a
- 42:52trace fork. What's going on with this? Uh? With with the construction
- 42:55in South Charleston right now, and you know one of that there's so many
- 43:00knocks on the town center. People say that you got to pay for parking.
- 43:04Well, you've always had to pay for parking. This is not anything
- 43:07new, and you just have to make make it work with what you have.
- 43:14And I'm talking about the actual building or where the building is going to
- 43:16be torn out. And I've said before in this show, folks, I
- 43:19am one hundred percent behind the sports complex, the amount of money that it's
- 43:25going to bring into Charleston, we can't even begin to imagine it. I
- 43:30mean, look at what has already happened out at Shawnee. I mean,
- 43:35the sky is the limit here. I mean a couple of weeks ago of
- 43:42the tournament out at Shawne, thirty two teams came in for this tournament,
- 43:45thirty two and the ratio is usually an average of about two people per player,
- 43:52you know, eight ten, twelve players per team. All those play,
- 43:57all those people got to stay in hotels and they're going to need a
- 44:00restaurants sometimes with these tournaments. My friends that have kids who play travel ball,
- 44:04say, you roll into town maybe on a Friday, and you don't
- 44:06play again until Sunday. Well, what are you gonna do? You know,
- 44:08for forty eight hours, You're gonna go shopping, You're going to go
- 44:10to stores, You're gonna go stay in the hotel and whatever. So sky's
- 44:15the limit for sports, uh, for sports travel uh all over the country.
- 44:21Now, as for the as for the two restaurants that closed over the
- 44:23weekend, we talked about a little bit yesterday. I am told that the
- 44:27owners of Chop House and Tide Waters simply could not wait for the sports complex
- 44:34to be built. They were one hundred percent behind behind it. And I've
- 44:37heard you know, you see all the chatter online people saying, well,
- 44:40that's why they're no, it had nothing to do with it. They actually
- 44:44wanted this sports center to be built. Anybody with any sense wants this sports
- 44:47center to be built at downtown Charleston. It's I mean, the rents were
- 44:52going up and up and up, I'm told, and uh and and I
- 44:57get it, and it's badly as I feel for the workers there, and
- 45:05trust me, I really do, I will say that none of them should

- 48:55It's not so much happy to pay for parking, it's the women were the
- 48:59primary shoppers at the town Center mall and the parking garages were dark, dirty
- 49:05and dangerous, not an inviting atmosphere at all. Texas David Selango was governor,
- 49:12this state would be booming. He has energy to burn. Tex says,
- 49:16well, those other restaurants pay as well as chop House or Tidewater,
- 49:20not to mention seniority. Yeah, I can't answer that, and I would
- 49:23have much rather, as I was just trying to find the positive in the
- 49:27negative here. I would much rather that Tidewater and chopousees stayed open and kept
- 49:30those people employed. But that's not happening, that's not it. So I'm
- 49:35just trying to trying to look for the positives here. So I was listening
- 49:38to Hope East commentary driving in this morning and by the way. You can
- 49:42read it at wv metro news dot com. Today, of course, the
- 49:45final day Stephen and I talked about the final day the registered to vote for
- 49:47the May fourteenth primary Hoppy crunch. The numbers and Republican voter rolls continue to
- 49:54soar, while Democrat numbers continue to plummet. In some counties they just remained
- 50:00the same. Overall, forty point three percent of all registered voters are Republican,
- 50:07thirty point six or Democrats, with twenty four percent independent or no party.
- 50:12Now the rest are some other parties, Libertarian, so on, and
- 50:14so forth. Interesting to me in all this, though, and looking at
- 50:16the numbers, in twenty sixteen, only fourteen of the state's fifty five counties
- 50:22had a Republican majority. In twenty twenty, that number was twenty six.
- 50:27Now it is forty forty of the states fifty five counties now have more registered
- 50:34Republicans than Democrats or other parties. What is interesting to me here is not
- 50:45that the counties are necessarily flipping like they are, but rather some of these
- 50:51specific counties. I'll take Lincoln County as an example. Lincoln County was once
- 50:59a Democrat stronghold. For sure, it is now solidly, solidly read in
- 51:07Logan County, where I'm from. All and I may be wrong about this,
- 51:12and I know some people in Logan listen to me, you can correct
- 51:15me if I'm wrong. I think all but one of the elected officials there
- 51:21are currently Republican. And again I might be wrong about but I think all
- 51:28but one. I think the circuit clerk remains a Democrat, I think.
- 51:31But regardless, most were Democrats and of all flipped. It's amazing, and
- 51:38I've mentioned this on the show as well before. In the early nineties there
- 51:42were not enough Republicans in Logan County to have the number needed to work the
- 51:45polls. They had to have Democrats work in the Republican poll worker slots.
- 51:52The times they are changing, and for sure, there is zero evidence that
- 51:59this is going to change anytime. So I mean, even here in Kanawha
- 52:00County, once solidly blue, it's still blue, but not by much.
- 52:06And prediction is that'll change within a couple of years too. The party is
- 52:09even having trouble finding people to run for office. So okay, I'll try
- 52:15to hold on that text for tomorrow. If it's far far too long,
- 52:21all right, I will try to get to these text tomorrow because they're a
- 52:22little bit too long, all right. Thank you so much to Republican candidate
- 52:27for Secretary of State Chris Warner for stopping buying and Stephen Alan Adams from Ogden
