- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here it's Thursday the 22nd of May
- 0:16and I hope you're going well. Thanks for tapping on play.
- 0:18We are continuing in this fascinating journey working our
- 0:23way through the book of Hebrews, and this reading today really is
- 0:28talking a lot about old rules of worship and sacrificial law and
- 0:33the way that God's people in the Old Testament really had to
- 0:38prepare themselves to come before God.
- 0:40And there was lots of cleansing process to make themselves
- 0:44presentable and clean in order to come to the priest who would
- 0:49then facilitate them coming into God's presence.
- 0:52It was this long, painful process to transform essentially
- 0:56an unclean human into being fit to come before a clean God.
- 1:02And that to them, that was just natural.
- 1:04That was the thing they had to do.
- 1:05And it was long, it was painful. And I never really appreciated
- 1:09this until I went to my local synagogue a number of years ago
- 1:12and participated in their Passover feast.
- 1:16And all the way through, we would stop and we'd go through
- 1:18the process of cleansing, of of cleaning, of washing, of making
- 1:23ourselves acceptable. So built into their psyche was
- 1:26this concept that we are not acceptable to come before God
- 1:30unless we are cleansed. And while that might be a little
- 1:34bit lost on us normally, let's put ourselves in that place to
- 1:37fully appreciate what Jesus has indeed done for us.
- 1:42So you ready? Let us read it together,
- 1:44friends. Let's read Hebrews Chapter 9.
- 1:56That first covenant between God and Israel had regulations for
- 2:00worship and a place of worship here on earth.
- 2:04There were two rooms in that Tabernacle.
- 2:06In the first room were a lampstand, a table, and sacred
- 2:10loaves of bread on the table. This room was called the Holy
- 2:13Place. Then there was a curtain, and
- 2:16behind the curtain was the second room called the Most Holy
- 2:20Place. In that room were a gold incense
- 2:23altar and a wooden chest called the Ark of the Covenant, which
- 2:28was covered with gold on all sides.
- 2:31Inside the ark were a gold jar containing Manner Aaron's staff
- 2:36that sprouted leaves and the stone tablets of the covenant.
- 2:41Above the ark were the cherubim of divine glory, whose wings
- 2:46stretched out over the ark's cover.
- 2:48The place of atonement. But we cannot explain these
- 2:52things in detail now. When these things were all in
- 2:55place, the priests regularly entered the first room as they
- 2:59performed their religious duties, but only the High Priest
- 3:03ever entered the Most Holy Place, and only once a year, and
- 3:08he always offered blood for his own sins and for the sins the
- 3:12people had committed in ignorance.
- 3:14By these regulations the Holy Spirit revealed that the
- 3:18entrance to the Most Holy Place was not freely open as long as a
- 3:22Tabernacle and the system it represented were still in use.
- 3:27This is an illustration pointing to the present time, For the
- 3:31gifts and sacrifices that the priests offer are not able to
- 3:35cleanse the consciences of the people who bring them.
- 3:38For that old system deals only with food and drink and various
- 3:42cleansing ceremonies, physical regulations that were in effect
- 3:47only until a better system could be established.
- 3:51So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good
- 3:55things that have come. He has entered that greater,
- 3:59more perfect Tabernacle in heaven which was not made by
- 4:03human hands and is not part of this created world.
- 4:07With His own blood, not the blood of goats and calves, He
- 4:11entered the Most Holy Place once and for all time and secured our
- 4:17redemption forever. Under the old system, the blood
- 4:22of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse
- 4:25people's bodies from ceremonial impurity.
- 4:29Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our
- 4:33consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living
- 4:38God. For by the power of the eternal
- 4:41Spirit, Christ offered Himself to God as a perfect sacrifice
- 4:47for our sins. That is why He is the one who
- 4:51mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who
- 4:56are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has
- 5:00promised them. For Christ died to set them free
- 5:04from the penalty of the sins they had committed under the
- 5:08first covenant. Now, when someone leaves a will,
- 5:12it is necessary to prove that the person who made it is dead.
- 5:16The will goes into effect only after the person's death.
- 5:21While the person who made it is still alive, the will cannot be
- 5:24put into effect. That is why even the first
- 5:28covenant was put into effect with the blood of an animal.
- 5:31For after Moses had read each of God's commandments to the
- 5:35people, he took the blood of calves and goats along with
- 5:38water, and sprinkled both the book of God's law and all the
- 5:43people, using hyssop branches and scarlet wool.
- 5:47Then he said, this blood confirms the covenant God has
- 5:52made with you. And in the same way he sprinkled
- 5:56blood on the Tabernacle and on everything used for worship.
- 5:59In fact, according to the law of Moses, nearly everything was
- 6:03purified with blood. For without the shedding of
- 6:06blood there is no forgiveness. That is why the Tabernacle and
- 6:12everything in it, which were copies of things in heaven, had
- 6:16to be purified by the blood of animals.
- 6:19But the real things in heaven had to be purified with far
- 6:23better sacrifices than the blood of animals.
- 6:26For Christ did not enter into a holy place made with human
- 6:30hands, which was only a copy of the true one in heaven.
- 6:34He entered into heaven itself to appear now before God on our
- 6:39behalf, and He did not enter heaven to offer Himself again
- 6:43and again, like the High Priest here on earth who enters the
- 6:47Most Holy Place year after year with the blood of an animal.
- 6:52If that had been necessary, Christ would have had to die
- 6:55again and again ever since the world began.
- 6:59But now, once for all time, He has appeared at the end of the
- 7:05age to remove sin by His own death as a sacrifice.
- 7:10And just as each person is destined to die once, and after
- 7:14that comes judgement, so also Christ was offered once for all
- 7:19time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people.
- 7:25He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring
- 7:29salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for Him.
- 7:44Jesus, it is quite incredible to hear these words spoken about
- 7:49the fact that this whole process that was set up here to cleanse
- 7:53God's people, that was just a shadow, just a copy of the real
- 7:59way that you were going to cleanse all of us.
- 8:04That it was your plan all along to save us through Jesus
- 8:08sacrifice. So this system was entirely set
- 8:13up to point toward you, Jesus, and to point toward what you
- 8:18would ultimately do to bring us face to face to God without sin,
- 8:25without shame, so that we can stand before you, our loving
- 8:29Father, as your perfect children, transformed by your
- 8:35perfect Son. Oh, we are so grateful for the
- 8:39enormity of your plans and how you just carry them out with
- 8:43absolute precision with the one goal, the one goal our Father,
- 8:49that's to bring your children back to you.
- 8:52So here we are, your children, and we receive that gift that
- 8:56you've given us through Jesus, and we're so grateful to be part
- 9:01of your family and to feel your love and your acceptance and our
- 9:06firm identity as your child. So we just praise you and pray
- 9:14all of these things in the name of that perfect sacrifice, the
- 9:18name of Jesus, Amen.
