Sam: Hey, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about The Way Up by Errol L. Pierre with Jim Jermanok. It's a career growth book that absolutely wrecked my assumptions about how people actually get ahead. Sophie, I have to ask, what made this one stand out for you?
• 0:19
Sophie: Hey there Sam. So The Way Up is this really grounded look at upward mobility in America, and the reason it matters is that it refuses both easy stories. It won't tell you that grinding harder is enough, and it won't tell you the deck is stacked so why bother. It lives in the messy middle, and that's where all of us actually are.
• 0:40
Sam: Right, and the first big thing he does is just admit the bootstraps story is broken. We've all been fed this idea that if you stay later and work harder, you'll rise. Pierre basically says that's comforting, but it ignores how the game is rigged in subtle ways.
• 0:58
Sophie: And what he replaces it with is social capital. That's the real currency of advancement. It's not just what you know or how hard you work. It's who knows you, and whether you can read the unspoken rules of the rooms you're trying to enter.
• 1:13
Sam: Which is such a different metaphor than we're used to. He says the way up isn't a ladder at all. It's a series of bridges you build.
• 1:20
Sophie: Yes, and I love that because a ladder implies one path that everyone climbs the same way. Bridges imply you're constructing connections between where you are and where you want to go. That changes everything about how you'd strategize.
• 1:34
Sam: And he's not theorizing here. His own story anchors the whole book. He grew up working class, son of immigrants, and had to learn the rules of the professional world completely from scratch.
• 1:47
Sophie: The cultural dislocation he describes is so specific. He talks about having to decipher unwritten codes, from how people dressed to how they networked at cocktail parties. And he's clear that intelligence and ambition alone were not enough to close that gap.
• 2:03
Sam: I actually pushed back on this when I first read it, because code-switching can sound like erasing yourself. But he frames it as becoming fluent in multiple cultures. You're not abandoning your roots, you're adding a language.
• 2:17
Sophie: Exactly, and that's the key distinction. The skill is translating what you already have into a language the establishment understands. That's not selling out. That's literacy.
• 2:28
Sam: Then he gets into failure, and this part really got me. He says the path isn't a straight line up. It's a series of lateral moves.
• 2:36
Sophie: Right, and he calls the willingness to do that strategic patience. You slow down in order to speed up later. Taking a job that looks like a step down can give you a new skill, a new network, or a whole new industry.
• 2:50
Sam: Isn't that wild? We're so terrified of moving sideways because the culture is obsessed with constant upward trajectory. But he argues that pressure to always be advancing leads to burnout and bad decisions.
• 3:04
Sophie: And the courage to pause and reassess builds a more resilient career. That reframe alone was worth the read for me.
• 3:12
Sam: Okay, so let's talk about networking, because I usually hate this topic. But his take is refreshingly honest. He completely rejects the transactional version, the business cards and the generic LinkedIn requests.
• 3:25
Sophie: He proposes authentic connection instead. The most powerful networks are built on genuine relationships, mutual respect, and a willingness to give before you receive.
• 3:36
Sam: And he gives a real blueprint. How to approach a mentor, how to ask for help without feeling like a burden, how to turn a casual acquaintance into an advocate. It's practical stuff.
• 3:48
Sophie: Plus he points out your network isn't just for finding a job. It's your support system, your information source, and your safety net when things go wrong. The people who rise fastest aren't the most talented. They're the ones who built a community around themselves.
• 4:04
Sam: Then there's the hidden curriculum, which is probably my favorite concept in the book. It's the set of unwritten rules that govern success in professional environments but are never explicitly taught.
• 4:16
Sophie: And if you didn't grow up in a household where those rules were modeled, you're at a real disadvantage. It covers how to write a professional email, how to conduct yourself in a meeting, how to ask for a raise, how to manage your personal brand.
• 4:31
Sam: I love that he doesn't just name the gap. He fills it. He teaches you how to read a room and advocate for yourself without coming across as aggressive. It's basically professional literacy for anyone who felt like they were playing a game without the rulebook.
• 4:46
Sophie: Yeah, and then he does something I did not expect. He reframes ambition itself. In a culture that equates ambition with selfishness, he argues it's actually a moral imperative.
• 4:58
Sam: Generative ambition. That's the term. The goal isn't to get to the top and pull the ladder up behind you. It's to reach a position of influence where you can create opportunities for others.
• 5:10
Sophie: Which transforms the whole journey from a lonely competitive struggle into something collaborative. Your rise isn't zero-sum. It can be a rising tide that lifts a lot of boats.
• 5:22
Sam: And the measure of your climb becomes the number of people you bring with you. That's such a different scoreboard than we're used to.
• 5:28
Sophie: He also tackles risk, which I found really useful. He says the ability to take calculated risks is a muscle you have to exercise. People from disadvantaged backgrounds are often taught to play it safe, and that understandable caution can become an obstacle.
• 5:46
Sam: His framework is to build a risk portfolio, basically diversifying your bets so one failure doesn't wipe you out. And he argues the biggest risk of all is taking no risk. Playing it safe is often the surest path to stagnation.
• 6:01
Sophie: And underpinning all of it is self-awareness. He pushes this idea of a personal audit, where you identify your strengths, your weaknesses, and the behavior patterns that are holding you back. It's not a one-time thing either. It's an ongoing practice.
• 6:17
Sam: Honestly, the humility piece surprised me. He says the most successful people are constantly seeking feedback and admitting what they don't know. That's not weakness. That's a source of strength.
• 6:30
Sophie: He also critiques the modern workplace pretty sharply. Many organizations aren't designed to foster mobility for everyone. They reward presence over productivity and conformity over innovation. So he gives you tools to navigate that and even change it from within.
• 6:47
Sam: And it's not just for individuals. There's a whole section for leaders, about building ladders of opportunity inside a company, with transparent promotion criteria and mentorship programs. He argues developing talent is just smart business.
• 7:03
Sophie: So the book ties it all together into a philosophy. The way up isn't a destination. It's a way of being. It's a mindset of continuous growth and a willingness to embrace struggle as a teacher.
• 7:16
Sam: The line that stuck with me is that the person you become along the way matters more than any title or salary. And he's honest that the barriers of race, class, and gender are real. He just refuses to accept they're insurmountable.
• 7:31
Sophie: Which is why it's ultimately a hopeful book. It's a practical roadmap that says your background doesn't have to define your future. The climb isn't a burden to be endured. It's an adventure to be embraced.
• 7:44
Sam: So if I'm naming the one thing I'm taking away, it's this. Stop treating my career like a ladder and start treating it like bridges. Build relationships before I need them, and be patient with the sideways moves.
• 7:58
Sophie: And honestly, if you want to go deeper, the whole library is over at 7minutebooks.com/app, with over 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language. It starts at $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 once for lifetime access.
• 8:22
Sophie: The whole point is that the way up was never meant to be climbed alone, and the view is always better when it's shared. We'll see you in the next one.
