Transcript
- 0:00Hello, everybody. Welcome back to the Rick Mast
- 0:02Show. I am Charlie Marlow.
- 0:04That is the great Rick Mast. And I'm telling you, Rick, we
- 0:06started this podcast about a month ago and the timing could
- 0:09not be more perfect because every week NASCAR just gives us
- 0:14so much to talk about North Wilkesboro and the fight.
- 0:18It was absolutely nuts. How you doing man?
- 0:20Doing well, doing well, Charlie. I'm like, I, you know, I think
- 0:23the same thing to watch these races.
- 0:24I'm like, man, it's a good time to be doing the Rick Mast show.
- 0:27We got all kinds of stuff. All right, let's let's get right
- 0:31to it. I feel bad because nobody's even
- 0:33mentioning the fact that Joey Logano actually won the race in
- 0:36in very dominating fashion. But I'll just throw it to you
- 0:40first. Just, just.
- 0:42And if you want to talk about Logano, that's fine, But most
- 0:44people are talking about the fight.
- 0:45Just give me your take. Yeah.
- 0:47Then one of the neat deals Logano, they were, I saw an
- 0:49interview they were talk with Logano and he says they were
- 0:52talking about the fight and he says, well who won the race,
- 0:55right. And I thought that's pretty
- 0:56cool. Logano, that's pretty cool.
- 0:58The man that he man, he he whipped their their asses.
- 1:01Great Lord of mercy he did good. And the neat part about it, the
- 1:04track, you know they repaved the track and you know I think
- 1:08Goodyear learned some stuff because they came with a hard
- 1:11tire and a soft tire. Well, everybody, we ended up on
- 1:14the soft tire and the soft tire did not go away right the way
- 1:19they anticipated. So that you know that tells me a
- 1:22Goodyear is going to go back. Now they've got to go back and
- 1:24do a little more work because that I think that caught them
- 1:26off guard. You remember the you remember
- 1:28the Bristol debacle right when we had the rain tire and 40 laps
- 1:32the tires were wore out and the guys are have to figure out how
- 1:34to do that. Well that's what they were
- 1:35trying to do with the soft tire at at Wilkesboro.
- 1:38But clearly they weren't near as soft as they weren't soft as
- 1:41they needed to be to fall off and create the drama.
- 1:44They did it that they had at Bristol.
- 1:47But my Lord, the 22 cars, I mean they just hit they, you know,
- 1:51it's it's the same every week or everywhere you go since I've
- 1:54been racing. You hit on something.
- 1:56You know if your race car a little something with your
- 1:58chassis and it works and you carry that forward for a few
- 2:01weeks on that type of track because somebody catches up and
- 2:05obviously the 22 hit on something.
- 2:07Now the mile and a half deal, the 22's got work to go to do.
- 2:10But you know, this ought to give a little confidence gives, I
- 2:13tell you what it does, it gives it gives Joey confidence that,
- 2:16yeah, my guys can still put a fast race car under me, right?
- 2:19And all that stuff just builds on itself.
- 2:23OK, so when it comes to the fight, and I heard Denny
- 2:27Hamlin's take on this and and mine is similar, I feel like
- 2:31when when you get wrecked on lap two and then the great tweet
- 2:35from Dale Earnhardt Junior saying, hey, we better cement up
- 2:38all these tunnels so that none of the drivers can leave.
- 2:41So, so Ricky's all fired up and pissed when he does his
- 2:44interview and he goes, you know, Bob poker ass.
- 2:47Ask him how you going to respond, why don't you watch
- 2:49afterwards? And so to me it was almost like
- 2:52Ricky because he had to wait two hours, he felt like he then had
- 2:56to respond. I'm sure at that point he'd
- 2:59cooled down, he'd showered, he put on the fun shorts and all
- 3:02that. And then even when when he threw
- 3:05the punch, it was like at that point, Kyle was getting ready to
- 3:10apologize and say, OK, if that's if that's the way you saw it,
- 3:13I'll check the replay. You know, it wasn't like he
- 3:16punched him immediately. You know, they're 2530 seconds
- 3:19in and it didn't even seem very heated.
- 3:22But I feel like, you know, to use a poker term, Ricky felt
- 3:25like he was pot committed. He had already told everybody he
- 3:28was going to fight him and he basically had to throw the punch
- 3:30at that point. Yeah, you got to be careful with
- 3:32your words, dude. I mean you really do.
- 3:35He could have said that and then left the racetrack if it if it
- 3:38had a tunnel. But you know, he sit there and
- 3:40stood for, you know, an hour or two and still there.
- 3:43And he made that comment. I don't know, once he made that
- 3:46comment, if he if he thought that, he'd then had to follow
- 3:49through with it because he made the comment, you know, the, the
- 3:52telling one was when he said, you know, hold my watch, right.
- 3:55That refers to Richard Trillas jumping on Kyle Busch a few
- 3:59years ago, and he, he made Austin Dillon hold his watch.
- 4:03Why He pounded on Kyle's head. You know, I'll tell you one
- 4:07thing, Kyle's head is it's cost a lot of people a lot of money.
- 4:09You know, there's been a lot of fans off of Kyle's head, people
- 4:12beating on his head. But I I don't know, in our
- 4:17sport, man, you've just got to how can I say you, you, you,
- 4:21your actions and the way you do things.
- 4:24And if you say things, if you say things and don't follow
- 4:27through with it, everybody within the garage jury picks up
- 4:30on it, you know, and they think, well, we can do whatever we want
- 4:32with that sky, right? But he goes out there and says
- 4:35it and then you know he tries to lay a punch.
- 4:38It wasn't really a, you know, he he comes around pretty good, but
- 4:42he didn't have a lot of, he didn't have a lot of strength
- 4:45behind that punch. If you look at it, the direction
- 4:47the punch was going and the way it landed, it really didn't, you
- 4:51know, it really didn't mount to anything.
- 4:53OK. And not that I'm a fight
- 4:55connoisseur but I have seen some brawls and but it been around a
- 4:59few and how that works but you know he backed himself in a
- 5:03corner dude but by saying that and you know he could have said
- 5:08it left the racetrack and probably everything will be all
- 5:11right and everybody be looking for the big wreck this week at
- 5:13Charlotte. But you know the way it worked
- 5:15out he was stuck in there and I I I really I don't know how much
- 5:19was still anger and how much was you know I got it.
- 5:22I got to do what I said is going to do because, you know, he had
- 5:27a good poker. I will give him.
- 5:28I'll give. I'll give him credit for this.
- 5:30He had a good poker face when he was talking to Paul Bush, right?
- 5:33I mean, he was, it looked like he was, he was, he looked like
- 5:36somebody that, you know, you're not really going to have to
- 5:38protect yourself from, from a swing right now, you know, he
- 5:41was pretty much under control and all that.
- 5:44But, you know, why in the hell do these dads always have to get
- 5:48in these fights, Charlie? Why do they do that?
- 5:52You know, I mean, I I go back to Logano's dad, right.
- 5:58He got thrown out and suspended for a while.
- 6:00He some ways I forget who it was whipping upon Joey and he got in
- 6:04the middle of it. So they had to ban him from the
- 6:06racetrack. I remember the Bush's dad
- 6:09getting into being in the middle of these squabbles sometimes,
- 6:11you know, in short track. I tell you, in short track, race
- 6:14is coming up a lot of times. It's the bombs.
- 6:16It's the bombs you got to watch out for, right?
- 6:19It's like because the bombs, I mean they they'll get in the
- 6:22middle of this stuff. And I who was it that time at
- 6:25Wilkesboro when Tiny Lunn remember that they got in a big
- 6:29fight with the Pettys after the race and and Tiny, you know it
- 6:32was a big band and I guess Morris or Maurice was into it
- 6:35with them and and they they they they they talked to Tiny
- 6:39afterwards and he said, well you know, I don't mind fighting
- 6:42Richard or Reese or or Dale or any of those guys.
- 6:46He says the problem is when you when you go pick a fight with
- 6:48him, you got to fight. You got to fight the whole
- 6:50family. And in that particular fight,
- 6:53Lee, Petty's wife, Richard, Petty's Mama, came over there
- 6:57and started beating Tiny Lun in the head with her purse.
- 7:00That had a gun in it or something heavy, right?
- 7:02And it was. And I could go back to a lot of
- 7:06bottle bombs, getting involved in this stuff, taking care of
- 7:09their kids or trying to protect their children.
- 7:11Right. But for the dads to be doing it
- 7:15at on this stage, you know, I'm, I'm a little, I'm a little
- 7:18uncomfortable with that one. I really am.
- 7:20I truly AM. Yeah, and if you look at the
- 7:22replay, at first I thought Ricky Stenhouse Senior just grabbed
- 7:26Kyle. But then you see all, you know,
- 7:28we're breaking this down like the Zapruder film now.
- 7:30And it sure looked like Ricky Senior got a nice little right
- 7:34uppercut that was kind of shielded by his body.
- 7:37It looks like he got a little right uppercut to Kyle as he was
- 7:40taking him down. And then Kyle, Kyle got some
- 7:42good shots on Ricky's dad as well.
- 7:45Here, here's here's what I think is unfair about the way that
- 7:49NASCAR, I don't even want to say, allows drivers to fight
- 7:52because they don't really allow the fight to happen.
- 7:55When I look at sports where you're allowed to fight and not
- 7:58talking about boxing or UFC, which is fighting, but I'm
- 8:01talking about hockey. If if hockey players want to
- 8:04fight, they fight. It's fair.
- 8:08It's fair. Nobody jumps in until somebody's
- 8:10really getting pounded or they hit the ground.
- 8:12And then safety is a concern. But it's fair, and what I don't
- 8:16like about NASCAR fights, this happened last year with Ross
- 8:20Chastain versus Noah Gregson. Look, Ross Chastain got his
- 8:23punch. Noah Gregson wasn't allowed to
- 8:26retaliate because he gets everybody grabs him.
- 8:29And that was kind of the same thing.
- 8:30Look to me, Ricky got his punch in, but then all of a sudden
- 8:34when Kyle tries to retaliate, he's got 4000 people on him.
- 8:38So I think they have to make it a little more fair.
- 8:41I don't know. I don't know how you do that,
- 8:42but it always bothers me when the second guy, I don't think
- 8:46he's allowed to fairly retaliate.
- 8:49Yeah, you know, and and I and I see this on on on social media,
- 8:53but there's there's the big dude that's always in the middle of
- 8:57the fights and he's from NASCAR. But somebody says he's the head
- 9:00of security for NASCAR. I don't know.
- 9:02But he's the one. He's the one that seems like
- 9:05never lets the second guy get the punch in.
- 9:08And every, every time there's a fight, if you know what I'm
- 9:11talking about. Charlie, right?
- 9:12Big big old dude got a NASCAR. Shirt the black guy, right?
- 9:15Yeah, the big black dude, man. Every time there's a fight he's
- 9:18right there and this he, the second guy cannot get to lick
- 9:23you. I see people on social media
- 9:25fussing raising cane about that let that tell that guy to stay
- 9:28away from these fights. But that is true.
- 9:31They they do that. But I, I, I, you know it's it's
- 9:36what what really surprised me. Well man it's so much about that
- 9:39fight. You know when they showed Bush
- 9:41walking to his truck and there there's there's that's the dude
- 9:46in his shorts, his Bermuda shorts chilling, just sitting
- 9:49there waiting on Bush to show up.
- 9:52Right. And nobody's around and they're
- 9:54sitting there when they start talking for the videos.
- 9:57There's nobody around and it's like in three seconds when the
- 10:01when the when the Stenhouse throws the punch there's like a
- 10:062-3 dozen people around this all of a sudden I'm, I'm not sure
- 10:08where they were all standing and sitting back and but I'm going
- 10:12to tell you something man. The coolest still this whole
- 10:14fight was old big country big Bubba, whoever the hell he is,
- 10:17the guy that was the the guy with Bush that was throwing him
- 10:20off the trailer. Did we ever figure out who that
- 10:22is? Do we know who that is?
- 10:23Have we figured that out yet? It's obviously a Kyle Busch crew
- 10:28member. I didn't find his name.
- 10:29Somebody had his name on Twitter when it happened and I can't
- 10:32remember his name. We should know his name though.
- 10:34You're right. But it was cool if you noticed.
- 10:37I mean, you could tell that guy's been around because he was
- 10:40in the middle of that stuff. He never threw punches.
- 10:42He was just grabbing those guys by the shirt collar, throwing
- 10:44them off the truck. Get away from our truck, right.
- 10:47That's a guy. What that is, Charlie, That's a
- 10:49guy that's been in scuffles before, right?
- 10:52He understands what it means to actually throw a punch and get
- 10:54punched. But he wasn't doing that.
- 10:56He was just trying to clear the scene.
- 10:57You know, I I thought that was the the the the the funniest
- 11:01part of the whole deal. But you know, the fighting
- 11:04stuff. I mean now we now we got into
- 11:07the fine this morning, right? The the NASCAR's fighting,
- 11:11sitting out 75,000 and all that and everybody's fussing about
- 11:14that. You can't promote the race.
- 11:16You can't promote the fight, which they'll do and then find
- 11:19the guy also. You know, I, I yeah, I'm not
- 11:22sure about all that. But you know it's always been
- 11:25prevalent. Here's the here's the issue.
- 11:27But here's one of the problems with this deal.
- 11:30We as a sport try to remain clean and all that.
- 11:33But everybody knows that when two cup guys get in a scuffle
- 11:37after the event or whatever that's going to, that's going to
- 11:40generate interest. It always is go back to 79
- 11:43right? The famous Daytona 500
- 11:45Yarborough analysis that those that fight is still replayed,
- 11:49right. So then you have a factor of our
- 11:52sport that wants nothing to do with that.
- 11:55You know I noticed there's a couple reporters or beat writers
- 11:57that are really raising cane about this saying and and and
- 12:01and the fighting becoming a not the big issue and those guys
- 12:04just don't want any part of that.
- 12:05But the problem is it is part of our sport.
- 12:08It always has been and always will be.
- 12:09It's called passion. It's like Kitty said it's it's
- 12:12everybody's passionate about this So that's what happens.
- 12:15But here's here's the issue. We have Saturday night bull
- 12:19rings all across this country, short tracks, right?
- 12:22And and I've been, I've been involved with some promotions.
- 12:26I understand promoter side of these things.
- 12:28And the worst thing that happens if these Saturday night bull
- 12:32rings is when competitors get in fistfights, right?
- 12:36Because it becomes it, you know, they, they carry these
- 12:40fistfights on out a little bit further.
- 12:42It becomes more of a brawl and you're sitting there as a
- 12:44promoter trying to project the family sport.
- 12:47You got your your man and his wife and three kids sitting in
- 12:50the grandstands, right? And then you know you've got
- 12:53your drivers and everybody's on the edge, Everybody.
- 12:56The promoters don't make it any money.
- 12:57The drivers and teams are losing, buddy, but they're doing
- 13:00it for fun. And all of a sudden you got
- 13:01fights. And as a promoter, you know it's
- 13:04the last thing you want to happen because you cannot
- 13:06promote that fight at your local short track to bring people in
- 13:10next week. You can't.
- 13:11It don't work. It don't work like it does with
- 13:13NASCAR. So you know, they try to keep it
- 13:15clean. If somebody gets to fight at
- 13:17most those places, they ban them, they bar them, right.
- 13:19And it it's just a terrible. Believe what I'm telling you
- 13:22folks, short track promoters do not want any part of this,
- 13:26right? So they do everything they can
- 13:27to try to keep it out. Well, what happens?
- 13:31These guys are running these Saturday night race tracks and
- 13:34the and the promoters, they turn on the frigging Cup race, the
- 13:37biggest deal in the world. And there's the the, you know,
- 13:41the big deal that everybody aspires to be there.
- 13:43They are fighting, right? And you're sitting there like I
- 13:46don't want that at my short track.
- 13:48So that that's a hindrance when when they have these things,
- 13:52that's probably to be honest with you, Charlie.
- 13:55It's everybody's a secret. That's probably the only
- 13:57downside to these fights that happened because the upside is
- 14:01it's so good to talk about it draws interest.
- 14:04It it, it, it. I mean, hell, we're on ESPN,
- 14:06we're on the McAfee show everybody, right?
- 14:09Everybody had the clip of that. They were talking about it
- 14:11Sunday or Monday morning. Every news outlet in the in
- 14:15America had the fight on, right. So it's like Big Bill Fresh.
- 14:19You see publicity's publicity bad publicity still publicity,
- 14:23right. So, but if it just didn't
- 14:26trickle down to what short track promoters and those those
- 14:29drivers were trying to do, you know, I would.
- 14:32That's the only to me. That's the only downside to it.
- 14:35As long as nobody gets hurt, you know, 'cause we can sit here and
- 14:37talk about it and laugh about it and joke about it and it's fun.
- 14:40Somebody gets hurt, then yeah, all right, we got to take a
- 14:43different stance. But for, you know, I I don't
- 14:45know, I I enjoy the stuff. I just enjoy it.
- 14:49Oh, it's great. And by the way, while you're
- 14:50talking, I feel like we we owe it to the guy to find his name
- 14:55since he was clearing everybody out like the Royal Rumble.
- 14:57It's Justin White. So Justin White, Kyle Busch's
- 15:01crew, guy with the zone fire suit, just eliminating folks off
- 15:06the stage and and he was not fine.
- 15:09So the two crew members that were fine were from Ricky's
- 15:11team. That's Keith Matthew suspended 4
- 15:14weeks. Clint Myrick 8 weeks.
- 15:17Ricky's dad suspended indefinitely.
- 15:20Ricky gets $75,000 and definitely don't you think
- 15:23they're going to say, hey, why don't you stay away from the
- 15:25track for the rest of this year and then let things kind of,
- 15:29yeah. We have to go back and look at
- 15:32what what how they treated Logano's dad kind of a similar
- 15:36situation. Go back and see when he he can
- 15:38come back and that's probably, that's probably going to tell
- 15:41Mister Stenhouse when he's able to come back.
- 15:44OK Yeah. But Jason.
- 15:47Jason White, you said Justin White.
- 15:49Justin White. Justin White, whoever you are,
- 15:52Justin, you're my hero, dude. When I get to the next, when I
- 15:54get to the next racetrack, I'm going to come up and I'm going
- 15:57to oops, Sorry about that, folks.
- 15:58That's high technology at work, folks.
- 16:00I'm going to come and get your autograph.
- 16:02Justin. I am, man.
- 16:03You're my hero. Just, you know, that's funny.
- 16:06You give me happiness. You know, I hadn't thought about
- 16:09that. Obviously the way the the
- 16:11Internet especially works in social media, you become a
- 16:14sensation instantaneously. And now thinking about that,
- 16:18this guy's been all the memes and all the gifts as the kids
- 16:22call them. And think about it, there's
- 16:24going to be kids now that probably print out or somebody,
- 16:26somebody, NASCAR should make money off this.
- 16:28They should, they should have some really nice glossy photos
- 16:32of Justin White throwing somebody off the truck trailer
- 16:35and he should be autographing those with a nice silver
- 16:37Sharpie. Because I I would take one of
- 16:39those for sure. Exactly.
- 16:41And he, they could use him as a promotion of what to do when you
- 16:45want in the fight. This guy tried to stop a fight,
- 16:48and that's what we're trying to project everybody in America
- 16:51with. This guy's our hero.
- 16:53We don't want to fight him, but we want him breaking up fights
- 16:56and throwing people off the truck.
- 16:58Great promotion for NASCAR makes everybody hell.
- 17:00Everybody's happy now, dude. Everybody's happy.
- 17:03Nobody can fuss about that. Right.
- 17:05I'll tell you what, and I agree. You know, you can't find Ricky
- 17:09in my opinion and also promote it.
- 17:11It just makes no sense. But I think, I think the way the
- 17:13fight ended, you know, if you just if you think about
- 17:17storytelling, you know, beginning, middle end.
- 17:21I mean the way that Kyle yells at Ricky and basically says
- 17:26says, you know I suck just as bad as you, let's go.
- 17:29I mean he's, you know, they're both frustrated.
- 17:31You know Ricky's running in the 20s whatever.
- 17:34Kyle obviously usually is AI mean he's a champion.
- 17:37He's usually winning races this year.
- 17:38He isn't. They're both frustrated.
- 17:40But I thought the way that he ended it just saying, hey, I
- 17:43suck just as bad as you, let's go.
- 17:45It's just like 2 frustrated dudes.
- 17:47Very frustrated. And our boss Kenny I think the
- 17:51other day used the word passion or compass or passion, right And
- 17:55and it it's unless you're into the sport, unless you come
- 17:58through as a driver, dead ass broke or whatever and fought and
- 18:03scratched and crawled your way to that to that division, the
- 18:07the, the, the pinnacle of of auto racing in my mind.
- 18:11And you're there and you you're once you get there then the
- 18:16stuff that it the stuff that it takes to stay there.
- 18:20You know the the the drive and of course when performance on
- 18:23the racetrack. But everything off the
- 18:24racetrack, the the political stuff, the PR stuff, all the
- 18:27stuff you have to accommodate as a driver.
- 18:31And then you do all this stuff you go through, you go through
- 18:35all this in your life and all of a sudden you're running like
- 18:39crap, right? And you cannot, you cannot let
- 18:45that go. It's just it's it's it's all
- 18:47consuming. It's all, I don't know how to
- 18:49say it. I said this when I started.
- 18:51I don't know how to say this. But you cannot express, you
- 18:55cannot explain to somebody this not or never been in that
- 18:58situation what it means to to to to be in that situation.
- 19:04Because it's your whole being. It's your whole life.
- 19:07It's everything you work for. And if you feel like in this, in
- 19:11that moment that it's been threatened and it's been taken
- 19:14away from you, right. And that's why Ricky was so
- 19:17compassionate or so full of so much passion about what he was
- 19:20going to do. That's why Kyle reacted with We
- 19:23both suck, right? Let's go.
- 19:26It's it's it's it's just all consuming and everything you've
- 19:30worked your whole life for in that moment.
- 19:32The feeling is this guy's trying to take it away from me, OK?
- 19:36And that's really, that's really explains a little bit why these
- 19:40guys do and act the way they do. Because in the moment, man,
- 19:43there's nothing else any more important than this guy is
- 19:47basically trying to take a gun and shoot me.
- 19:48He's trying to kill me, trying to end my career, trying to end
- 19:50what I've worked for. And you do whatever you've got
- 19:53to do, whatever your mindset is and whatever your, you know,
- 19:56however you handle things in your life, that's what you
- 19:59revert to. And most of the time, it's
- 20:00barbaric. It's just barbaric.
- 20:03And that dude, let me tell you something.
- 20:06I cannot say names. I got a good story to tell you,
- 20:09but I cannot say names. Charlie and it It's such a good
- 20:12story, but I cannot say names. But if it's all right, could
- 20:16should I do that without giving the folks names?
- 20:19Sure and let we they. Can they can?
- 20:21Guess all right. We were at Rockingham one time.
- 20:24This was very very very early my career cup and I parked in the
- 20:28garage there there's a there's a multiple winner driver OK that
- 20:33leading the race almost got it won.
- 20:35There is a future cup champion pitted come out of the racetrack
- 20:40for new tires clip the the leader of the race and rectum
- 20:44right. I come in get out of my car and
- 20:47those days you pull your car up to the back of the truck right
- 20:50on the right side of me is a multiple winner driver truck.
- 20:54On the left side of me is the future Cup champion truck and.
- 20:59What year is this about? Well, I don't want to say if I
- 21:02say the year about to go out and figure this out.
- 21:04Let's just say very, very, very early in my career, all right,
- 21:08Like you're talking 9192, probably.
- 21:12So said driver that wins a bunch of races, walks, gets out of his
- 21:16car, walks by me. Hey, Rick, how you doing?
- 21:19Or something Like, how'd your day go?
- 21:20I said, well, whatever. And he's smiling and he walks by
- 21:23me and he goes right by my car and goes down in between my
- 21:27truck and the future Cup Champions truck.
- 21:29And I turn around and look well there's a future cup champion
- 21:32walking between our trucks. The multiple winner guy says
- 21:37something to him. The future champion turns
- 21:39around. The multiple winner comes from.
- 21:41And I tell people this story all the time.
- 21:42He comes from seems like China with his right fist comes
- 21:45straight up in the air and hits hits the multiple champion or
- 21:49the the future champion right here And a guy comes off the
- 21:53ground and he goes back and his hands are on both sides of the
- 21:56truck or this truck and this truck as he goes back and lays
- 22:00him out cold. Right.
- 22:02And I'm watching this the multiple winter guy comes
- 22:06walking by me grinning. All right Rick, have a good week
- 22:09buddy. See you next week and walks on
- 22:11down not not just grinning not sweating.
- 22:14And I look around and the future champion sitting there I said
- 22:17he's done killed him he's done killed this good.
- 22:20Right. And finally, you know, some crew
- 22:22members coming to get him, to get him up.
- 22:24And everything's fine and nobody knows about it.
- 22:28No reporters on it. There's no TV, OK, there's.
- 22:34And I'm like, 'cause I again, this was my really, really,
- 22:38really early my career. I knew kind of how things work,
- 22:42you know, through the Bush series and all the Outlaw and
- 22:45Saturday night Bullring stuff we used to do.
- 22:47I kind of knew how you handled things.
- 22:48And basically in those days you just handled stuff, right.
- 22:52Meeting didn't get involved. You didn't count on your dad's
- 22:55fighting for you. You didn't count on the media
- 22:57going into press and doing all this crap.
- 22:59You had to work your deal out with the driver, right?
- 23:02And most of the time it didn't. It didn't revolve around
- 23:06fighting. You know?
- 23:07Sometimes when it gets bad enough, it did.
- 23:10And there's no question, but most time you can work things
- 23:13out. Everybody understood.
- 23:15But when I saw this happen, I'm like, OK, they do the same shit
- 23:21here in Winston Cup races that I've done my whole life to
- 23:25patrol yourself, right? You're talking about policing
- 23:27ourselves. We've heard that term and I know
- 23:29you fans have heard this, that we police ourselves.
- 23:32It's a self policing sport. What I just told you is what the
- 23:36essence of policing ourselves means, right?
- 23:40Because when it was over, those two drivers, as far as I know,
- 23:43never had any more trouble. There were no fines written
- 23:47down, right, dude? I learned of a story also last
- 23:52week at the alumni group and I I I I pride myself in knowing
- 23:56everything or pretty much everything that was going on in
- 23:58our garage during during my tenure there.
- 24:01This one I missed a young driver at North Berks Wilkesboro one
- 24:06time. Had a little little problem with
- 24:08Dave Marcus. This young driver, when the race
- 24:11is over went all the way from one end of Pit Rd.
- 24:14To the other end of Pit Rd. to get in Dave Marks's face right.
- 24:20The end result was Dave Marcus cold cocked it, knocked the crap
- 24:25out of it. The said driver then walked back
- 24:28down Pit Rd. to the red truck and went to Mr. Beatty, talking
- 24:33about what had just happened. Dick Beatty was the leader of
- 24:36our sport and then he controlled the garage.
- 24:39Dick Beatty said. Quote.
- 24:42So you're telling me that you got out of your car, walked all
- 24:45the way down the other end of Pit Rd. to confront that man,
- 24:47and that man knocked the shit out of you?
- 24:50Said driver said yes. Sir, he's throwing.
- 24:52My advice to you is never get out of your car and go down to
- 24:55the other Pit Rd. trying to find a fight.
- 24:58We'll see you next week, OK? It.
- 25:01It it. Makes sense?
- 25:03And to my knowledge those two never had any trouble before.
- 25:06But that that's what I mean by that's what they mean by self
- 25:09policing, right. And like like today's today's
- 25:13deal. If that deal I'm telling you
- 25:15about had been videoed, well, hell, he probably have charges
- 25:18against you because I thought the guy was dead.
- 25:20You know what I really did, man. He's gonna kill this guy what
- 25:23we're going to do. And the said driver walked by me
- 25:25like hell. He just got his hair cut
- 25:28smiling, happy. All right, Rick.
- 25:30See you next week, buddy. And you know and it's like it
- 25:34wasn't that big a deal, but you know you you took care of things
- 25:36so I, you know, I, I but but now you you can't do that now.
- 25:41I mean, obviously the deal at Daytona in 79 was publicized
- 25:45because CBS Sports was telecasted and there it was for
- 25:48everybody to see. But believe me, bad.
- 25:50There's all kinds of stuff that went on always in the background
- 25:52that kept our sport, you know, self policed.
- 25:56And those are the stories. Those are awesome stories.
- 25:59So let's call an audible and go to What's Pissing Rick off this
- 26:04week? Because I I think it's fight
- 26:05related And then we'll wrap up our Our Fighting segment here
- 26:08because I saw you. I saw you on Twitter and I I
- 26:12posted a video last night where Richard Childress is at this
- 26:15charity event and he basically says, hey, I'd have jumped in
- 26:19and protected my guy Kyle Busch and Ricky Stenhouse Junior said
- 26:23he's going to wreck Kyle at Charlotte.
- 26:25And I'm going to tell Ricky if he does like you're going to get
- 26:27an ass whooping whatever it is. So then people are saying, oh,
- 26:30this guy's pushing 80, he can't do nothing.
- 26:32And and I saw you on Twitter say don't, you know, don't
- 26:36underestimate Richard Childress. Yeah, I mean, he, you know,
- 26:41bias, of course, 'cause, you know, he's older than me, of
- 26:44course, but I'm sort of that the younger part of his generation,
- 26:47you might say. But the thing that pisses me off
- 26:50about it, and I don't know if it's really pissed off, more
- 26:52irritated or pissed off. But the comments of the people
- 26:56talking about Richard, like you just said, I old man, he needs
- 27:00to go back. He needs to go to his, but he
- 27:01needs to go to the old folks home.
- 27:03He he did spend his time trying to get his team running better
- 27:06instead of doing this crap. And I'm like so much of social,
- 27:10social media is just the people making comments just really
- 27:15don't know what the hell they're talking about.
- 27:18So they just throw stuff out there and then then what
- 27:20happens? Some people come along and
- 27:22believe what they just saw. Right.
- 27:24Take it verbatim. The deal with Richard Band you
- 27:28know give you a little bit of insight.
- 27:30When I was very young, these teams would some teams would be
- 27:34a it'd be a race team when they go out of business.
- 27:36They have these auction sales and I went to maybe three or
- 27:39four and went to Jim test is down in Kings Mountain NC one
- 27:43time and we're at this auction and and people involved in
- 27:46racing to be there. Well, there's Richard Childress
- 27:48and I'm watching him bidding on stuff and buying stuff and I
- 27:52mean I'm talking like 10 and $15 items.
- 27:54He bought a I'll never forget he bought a AMCO valve grinder.
- 27:58So all your old folks know what I'm talking about.
- 28:00Everybody else on here know what the hell is he talking about.
- 28:02It's a it's an engine piece it's a part of a a machine tool
- 28:05that's used to build engines works on valves and I forget
- 28:09what he gave and I remember watching that deal and you could
- 28:12tell Richard was struggling. The thing got up to like 70 or
- 28:15$75 and it was a struggle for Richard to go that extra $5.
- 28:19I'm like and he this is before he This is why he was still a
- 28:22driver right. He he this is before Earnhardt's
- 28:25time and he you could tell Richard was struggling to give
- 28:28that extra $5 for that valve ground machine.
- 28:31Well he took all that stuff and what he did he built his empire
- 28:35over the years and his deal, I'm going to tell you something his
- 28:38deals like Dale Earnhardt. Dale Earnhardt.
- 28:42It's been chronicled and a lot of this goes back with Dale his
- 28:46early years. Dale wherever he rate, wherever
- 28:49he finished in that race this is before cup.
- 28:52Wherever he finished in that race is how he fed his family
- 28:55that week or made his payment that that's been qualified.
- 29:00It's been talked about it's verified That's the way it
- 29:02works. And so many of us, once I got in
- 29:04the Bush it was the same way for me that you know by whatever I
- 29:07we won. You know that's how we kept our
- 29:09team going and Dale was very, very hungry every time when you
- 29:14go to supper table, right. He was the he was the hungriest
- 29:17guy there ever was when you go to sit down and eat supper.
- 29:19So to eat a good supper, he had to do good on the racetrack and
- 29:23all that just carried over to the racetrack.
- 29:25And the the neat part about Earnhardt, he never lost that
- 29:29drive for the day he died. He never lost that.
- 29:31He drove every lap of every race like he was.
- 29:34He's going to eat, you know, rice or he's going to eat a big
- 29:37steak this week. And that's the way he drove.
- 29:40Richard Childress is the same way with owning the team, right.
- 29:43Everything that that he worked for and built and done is
- 29:47through his hard work, blood, sweat and tears.
- 29:49You know he's he doesn't have other business so well he's
- 29:52starting to get the wine wine stuff and all that but you know
- 29:55his his money you you you know like Rick and and and and all
- 29:59these other guys Rodger those guys you that have other avenues
- 30:03to help do the trade-offs from sponsors.
- 30:05Richard doesn't have that so he has fought and scraped for
- 30:09everything in his life for everything he's got and that
- 30:13that part is just like Dale Earnhardt that that'll never
- 30:16leave that man right. And the the thing that people
- 30:19didn't pick up on what he said was, yeah, I'm older now.
- 30:22And what did he say? Charlie?
- 30:25I fight differently. I fight differently.
- 30:28I'm older now and I fight differently now.
- 30:30You could take that for what it means.
- 30:32I know what that means. I think, right, if you're going
- 30:35to pick a fight with Richard, even though he's 90,000 years
- 30:38old, you're going to lose because he's a smart man and he
- 30:41knows he can't. At 80 or 77 years old, he can't
- 30:45fight like you used to be able to fight.
- 30:47He would try, but he also smart enough realized he's got to have
- 30:50a couple of advantages up his sleeve, right?
- 30:53I would not mess with that man. You know it's the mentality of
- 30:56the man. It's not you know, it's not the
- 30:58size of the dog, the fight. It's the fighting the dog.
- 31:01And that's what you that's what you're up against when you come
- 31:04across somebody like Richard cheers.
- 31:06And I'm telling you right now that wasn't that wasn't
- 31:09Wordsmith and that was if Stenhouse.
- 31:12It's this is folks. This is not going to happen.
- 31:15Stenhouse is over. They don't want any more of this
- 31:17crap. Believe what I'm telling.
- 31:18Believe me, he Ricky doesn't want any more of this crap.
- 31:21But if Stenhouse was to go out there and blatantly wreck
- 31:25Childress's car, you might as well get the big dude from
- 31:30NASCAR, the security guy, to go over where Childress is.
- 31:32You might as well set up all the cameras because he's going to
- 31:35get some kind of liquid in on Richard on Ricky Stenhouse.
- 31:38It's just the way it is, right? I I tell people these stories
- 31:42about our sport and I always come back to the word barbaric
- 31:45because it seems like it comes down to that sometimes.
- 31:48But it's not really. It's it's just your mindset
- 31:50right. And the way these guys think and
- 31:53and and Richard, just one of them guys.
- 31:55He says man I'm older and I got a new way of fighting.
- 31:59You better believe what he's saying.
- 32:01Don't don't don't discredit this man.
- 32:03Don't don't call him an old fool.
- 32:05Don't do that. He he is not that.
- 32:08He is. He is one of those dudes.
- 32:12You know, so many people talk crap, Charlie.
- 32:14You know that They get under yap, yap yap.
- 32:16You're going to do this, going to do that, and they don't want
- 32:18to do shit. Richard's one of those guys
- 32:21that, you know, whatever he tells you you could take
- 32:24verbatim. He's going to follow through.
- 32:26All right, our our Rick Mass story time.
- 32:29We can wrap this into the the NASCAR Hall of Fame
- 32:32announcement. So you have a Ricky Rudd, a a
- 32:35good Virginia boy like yourself. You have Carl Edwards and you
- 32:38have a Ralph Moody who is a mechanic and race strategist.
- 32:41And so Ricky Rudd is a guy, and I always tell people I didn't
- 32:44grow up a hardcore NASCAR fan, but I'd always heard of the of
- 32:48the name Ricky Rudd. And then you start to read more
- 32:51about him and what one of NASCAR's 75 greatest drivers 23
- 32:55wins. The thing that stood out for me,
- 32:58he was he was second in 1991, but 906 Cup races over 32 years,
- 33:05This guy raced in Cup for 32 years.
- 33:07That's pretty amazing. Yeah, Ricky's one of those guys,
- 33:10man. He probably should already been
- 33:12in the hall, but he's in there now, so that's a mute point.
- 33:14But Ricky, Ricky's a little bit different guy.
- 33:19Ricky was always a little aloof, I got to say, aloof.
- 33:23He was a he was aloof in the garage there.
- 33:25Very nice man. Very respectful band right.
- 33:30Very talented race car driver, never into squabbles never into
- 33:34stuff. An easy race car driver to race
- 33:37with somebody. You would you would give breaks
- 33:39on the racetrack, right, because he would give you breaks on the
- 33:42racetrack never into stuff much And and I think him and the
- 33:48Harvick deals about the only deal I know of it happened at
- 33:50Richmond that time. But you know he and Linda and
- 33:52their little son landed they. I don't know, Rick.
- 33:56Ricky came along. When he came along he was one of
- 33:59he was kind of like one of the first clean cut guys.
- 34:02Charlie. All right.
- 34:04And when he came along the sport he, I mean he was you know you
- 34:07people didn't really know him. He raced those go karts.
- 34:09He was very successful but he came into sport as a as a clean
- 34:12cut guy and that image that he projected when he first came in,
- 34:16you know he carried that same image all the way through the
- 34:18end of his career. You know as even as an owner,
- 34:22right. And I don't know.
- 34:24He's an Ricky is an interested study in probably the way you
- 34:29should conduct yourself in the sport right.
- 34:33He was never an Earnhardt flashy Richard Petty type Gordon deal
- 34:38right. But he just he did his thing
- 34:42very well, respected he he he he he made his fortune in racing.
- 34:47You know he he he got in the ownership roller for a while his
- 34:50own team. I think that kind of probably
- 34:52put him more the edge because owning, owning team in cups,
- 34:56especially then it's not an easy deal.
- 34:58But you know he's enjoying life. I'm I'm really, really happy for
- 35:02him. I'm happy that he got in,
- 35:03really. I really AM.
- 35:05Speaking of clean cut, also you have Carl Edwards and when I
- 35:09really started paying attention to NASCAR, I was working for ATV
- 35:12station in Lansing, MI. So we had MIS in our market.
- 35:16We had two Cup races at the time.
- 35:17So this was this was 2006, 2007. And so this was you know Carl
- 35:22Edwards at that point. He was one of the guys right
- 35:25then. But you know, Jimmie Johnson,
- 35:26Dale Junior. But I just remember Carl Edwards
- 35:29obviously with the flip and he was another guy, you know, that
- 35:32would what He tried to kind of fake punch Matt Kenseth the one
- 35:36time. But a guy who won a lot of
- 35:38races, you'd see him on the cover of Men's Health magazine,
- 35:41'cause he's all Jack still is, by the way.
- 35:43You can still tell that he's freaking in the weight room all
- 35:46the time. Obviously he left early.
- 35:49It seems like he was pissed off about the way things ended at
- 35:52Homestead and felt felt like probably he was he was cheated
- 35:55out of a championship there. So a really interesting guy, a
- 35:58Missouri guy. I'm sitting here and in Saint
- 36:00Louis. He's from, he's from Columbia.
- 36:02So just give us your thoughts on Carl Edwards.
- 36:06Yeah, Charlie, my takes a little bit different, just a little
- 36:11bit. Number one, I don't know
- 36:13anything about the Hall of Fame. I don't know what the criteria
- 36:16is. I'm sure there's a mission
- 36:17statement and I don't know what the criteria is to be a Hall of
- 36:21Fame member. My issue with Carl is this.
- 36:27We never heard of Carl Edwards. He came into our sport, He did
- 36:31his thing, tremendous race car driver.
- 36:34Golly is talented. But he came in, he got his
- 36:38fortune and when he left, he left the sport never to be heard
- 36:43or see from again, right. That's my problem with him being
- 36:47a Hall of Fame member. You know, give back to the
- 36:49sport. Excuse me, where is your give
- 36:51back to the sport, Carl? Right.
- 36:53So I'm thinking about that. And then my kids were talking
- 36:56about that last night. And my my daughters and my son,
- 37:00you know, we're all into this stuff pretty hard.
- 37:03They're better at this stuff than me, actually.
- 37:06They dig up stuff. They point out Carl's history.
- 37:09They point out his stats, right? And I, because I discounted him
- 37:15by leaving our sport and not being involved after I kind of
- 37:21threw his stats out, didn't think about them.
- 37:24His stats are incredible, dude. Yeah.
- 37:26So do we do we put, do we put guys in because of the stats
- 37:31their contribution to sport or the impact they made?
- 37:34Right when Carl was here, he made a hell of an impact.
- 37:37And and what you just said, what you just said is one of the
- 37:41reasons you're from the Midwest, Carl's from the Midwest.
- 37:44You latched on to him, right. How many 10s of thousands of
- 37:48folks and you, you fans, did we get in the Midwest because of
- 37:52Carl Edwards, right? I'm sitting here justifying to
- 37:55myself to y'all why I I I think Carl, Carl belongs to be in
- 38:01there, deserves to be in there. When originally I did not think
- 38:04he did because I felt like he didn't help our sport when he
- 38:09left, right? But the impact he had when he
- 38:12was here, Pretty substantial, dude.
- 38:15Pretty substantial. Yeah, I'm looking right now.
- 38:18So 6 Truck wins out of 60 races in a fourth place finish in
- 38:222438, Xfinity wins and A championship in 2728 Cup wins
- 38:29and finished second twice. And you know, it's it's funny.
- 38:33I I like your perspective there and I'm I'm as a person who's
- 38:37always worked in the media. I also just always am drawn to
- 38:40storylines. And for me, I think the way Carl
- 38:44Edwards left the sport makes him even more interesting.
- 38:47Now to you. I get it.
- 38:49I get it. Hey, hey, he needs back at the
- 38:52tracks for the alumni. I know he came last year for the
- 38:55for the top 75 deal. But I I understand your point of
- 38:58saying no, he needs to come back.
- 38:59He needs to, to help out the sport.
- 39:01But kind of being you, you said aloof earlier, I believe talking
- 39:05about somebody but being kind of that recluse where you don't
- 39:08hear from him very often, it's kind of more mysterious.
- 39:12I'm trying to think, you know, who's like that a Saint Louis
- 39:15Cardinals old school and and what Philly's Steve Carlton was
- 39:19like that and his guy that because you never heard from
- 39:24him. It was more fascinating.
- 39:26Like, what is he up to? Why does he not want to do
- 39:28interviews? And I think there's that with
- 39:30Carl. Like it adds to his mystique.
- 39:32I feel like that you don't hear from him very much.
- 39:35It it makes me more interested in Carl Edwards.
- 39:37Yeah. And and the story, you know, if
- 39:39we ever get the true story, you know it's been hints and rumors
- 39:42and all that while you know he he, he he read second to Tony at
- 39:46Homestead and lost the championship.
- 39:48That's last time we saw him race, right.
- 39:50What? And then the rumors and the
- 39:52stories. It's been about him and he has
- 39:54absolutely given no one any indication why he did what he
- 39:59did. Right.
- 40:00It's like ADB Cooper, man. Where'd he go?
- 40:02In the plane. And it's like, what happened.
- 40:05Carl, what's the story here? You're the mystique, the
- 40:07mystery. I mean, I agree with you,
- 40:09Charlie. Somewhere down the road maybe
- 40:11that that'll be uncovered. You know why he did what he did
- 40:15and maybe. You know if you if you read the
- 40:17the the the one take is he was so pissed at NASCAR and felt
- 40:22like he got wronged he would never have a chance right.
- 40:26If if you believe that, then you know, if that was to ever be
- 40:31true and he's never said, well, what?
- 40:33Let me get back if if that was really what happened.
- 40:37Well, maybe he was trying to protect the sport instead of
- 40:40coming out and saying these bunch of people screwed me.
- 40:43I've never on and on and on. I'm leaving it, you know what I
- 40:45mean? Leaving the sport, maybe if he
- 40:47did feel the weight I have. No, this is pure conjecture on
- 40:50my part and I'm just conjecture this from other people's
- 40:53conjecture, right? And if that was the case, maybe
- 40:56he was protecting the sport. If he felt like they
- 40:58interounded, he want everything to do with it anymore instead of
- 41:01laying blasting, You know, they give me, they've given me my
- 41:05retirement for the rest of my life.
- 41:06I'm just going to leave it alone.
- 41:07Maybe. I don't know.
- 41:10Who knows? Yeah I feel like I could be
- 41:12wrong and maybe it's because I'm I'm wishing this to happen but I
- 41:16feel like he may come back for some type of one off race.
- 41:19And I only say that because when he did a couple of interviews at
- 41:22I think it was what Darlington last year and some people asked
- 41:25him about it and I think he's been working a little bit with
- 41:28track House and he's kind of hanging around the shop with
- 41:31track house. He said he had done some type of
- 41:33SIM. I I can't remember exactly what
- 41:35he said this was a year ago, but he said he'd been doing
- 41:37something in The Sims. So it seems like he's getting a
- 41:40little bit of an itch and I feel like it's kind of like, you
- 41:43know, Dale Junior still wants to race couple Xfinity races every
- 41:47once in a while and have his kids see him race.
- 41:49So I don't know, I just feel like in the next couple years it
- 41:52wouldn't surprise me if Carl Edwards comes back for for a one
- 41:56off race. I I don't know.
- 41:57Maybe it's because I want that to happen.
- 41:59It'd be cool. I mean it'd be very cool if you
- 42:01did. And he could probably pick right
- 42:03up about where he left off because he was an extraordinary
- 42:06talent. Yeah and and but you know so
- 42:09many guys when they walk away from the sport, man, they're
- 42:11done. You know you've you've, you've,
- 42:12you've done it for so long and you know you're just you're used
- 42:17up, basically. That's what happens to good crew
- 42:19chiefs. Crew chiefs get used up about.
- 42:22I talk about crew chiefs all the time, man.
- 42:23Crew chiefs, they'll, they will, the good crew chief said.
- 42:27I've seen so many of them do the same thing.
- 42:29It doesn't seem to be quite as prevalent today because it
- 42:32doesn't seem like it's quite as much on them.
- 42:34But a crew chief would in my day, he would breathe it, eat
- 42:38it, poop it, drink it, sleeping right 24/7, all the time.
- 42:44And those guys, and I'm talking truly 24/7 being into it.
- 42:50Everyone of them do the same thing.
- 42:51Some were, Some were, depending on when they started and
- 42:55whatever the age they were. But let's just say somewhere in
- 42:58the 40s or late 40s or whatever, they hit a wall.
- 43:01All of a sudden they wake up one day.
- 43:03I've hit this friggin wall. I cannot do this anymore.
- 43:06I'm either going to have to stop or going to have to shoot
- 43:08myself, right? I cannot invest my whole being
- 43:13into doing this. And you know, they'd walk away
- 43:16right Then. You see the crew chiefs that
- 43:19would kind of linger on forever. They were never as successful as
- 43:23those other guys and and and and you know, but but they weren't
- 43:27putting everything into it right?
- 43:30And they were just kind of linger on.
- 43:33Maybe that's what happened to Carl here, you know what I mean?
- 43:35A lot of guys, when they leave the sport, they're done.
- 43:37They don't want to come back. They will be a part of it.
- 43:39But as it as time goes on, I know like with me nostalgia
- 43:42starts taking over a little bit and you want to be a part of
- 43:45what's going on and try to help what you can help.
- 43:48And some guys don't leave at all.
- 43:50You know, they they quit driving but they're still in there.
- 43:52But I'm just there's so much mystery with Carl Edwards.
- 43:55I'm just not sure which category he fits in.
- 43:58Charlie. I I I don't know yet.
- 44:00And like you said, that's what's kind of intriguing about him,
- 44:03right. And trying to think about it and
- 44:05figure it out. You know maybe someday maybe
- 44:07that'll be CC's Charlie's big deal.
- 44:11He'll get to the bottom somehow. You or maybe we have only Rick
- 44:14Mash. So said listen they're going
- 44:15tell us nobody gives a shit now tell us, right.
- 44:18Yeah, who knows? I know, I'll tell you what, just
- 44:22kind of random fact. So on on Kenny's channel, which
- 44:25this is being broadcast on as you're watching right now, our
- 44:28most popular video ever was a couple years ago.
- 44:32Kenny just doing 10 minutes on his opinion on why Carl Edwards
- 44:37retired from NASCAR early and it's pushing like 900,000 views.
- 44:40Hopefully it gets over a million in the next several months.
- 44:45And so look, Kenny being a Saint Louis guy and Carl Edwards
- 44:49Columbia guy, they have the Missouri tie.
- 44:51So I I know Kenny has tried to get Carl on the Kenny
- 44:55conversation which maybe he does down the road.
- 44:58I don't think Carl wants to do a lot of media, but I also think I
- 45:01think time really does heal all wounds.
- 45:04You know if he if he was pissed at NASCAR.
- 45:06I do think as you get older you know this, you want to see your
- 45:08old buddies. You do want to be remembered.
- 45:10It might be 10/15/20 years from now, but everybody, you want to
- 45:14go to the NASCAR alumni and have a nice dinner and drink some
- 45:17beers with the boys, right? I I do feel like after a while I
- 45:20think we'll see. Maybe he doesn't race, maybe I'm
- 45:22wrong on that, but I think we'll see him again as as he ages,
- 45:26hanging around tracks more. Yeah, I I agree.
- 45:28You know, again, he's such a friggin mystery.
- 45:32I never knew Carl, OK? So I it's hard for me to kind of
- 45:36say you. A lot of the guys you know if we
- 45:38got some stuff going on and mystery in a little bit and not
- 45:40figured out, I kind of got a pretty good idea maybe where
- 45:43they're coming from. But this dude here, none.
- 45:46You know Rick Mass is completely out to lunch with this dude.
- 45:49Right. I will say this I disagreed with
- 45:52the Hall of Fame start with right after talking with my
- 45:55children last night and looking at what had happened and and
- 45:59listening to you today about the Midwest connection, I'm like
- 46:02yeah, this dude. This dude definitely deserves to
- 46:05be in the Hall of Fame. You know my problem, I'll tell
- 46:08you what, Charles, my whole problem with Hall of Fame is, is
- 46:11in that opinion, it should have been the first year or two.
- 46:16We should have put 20 or 30 guys in that.
- 46:19That. That's been my take all along.
- 46:21Get all the guys from 20, all those guys that that are getting
- 46:25in there, like the Ralph Booty, right?
- 46:27You know, those guys I think should have been put in the
- 46:32first couple years. You get all those guys out of
- 46:34the way, all the all the the Banjo Matthews of the world,
- 46:38right? All those guys put in the sport
- 46:40back then to start with. Then we can start each year
- 46:45having a better, I think better conversation because that's
- 46:47still a, that's still a critical conversation that people have
- 46:50between the old drivers, old time guys and the new guys,
- 46:54right? It's an argument every frigging
- 46:56year. So if we'd have put a lot of
- 46:57those guys in to start with, I don't think we'd.
- 46:59I don't think the Hall would have set themselves up to be
- 47:02criticized as much as they do, right?
- 47:04And that's that's the really, in my view, the only criticism I've
- 47:09ever had of the Hall of Fame. Any pics or anything, you know?
- 47:13Yeah. And this gets back to, I'll keep
- 47:15saying kind of the same type of narrative, but to me, and this
- 47:18is, this is as a sports fan, you know, this is about Barstool
- 47:23talk. You and I, we're talking now,
- 47:25but I would like to think it's the same if you and I are
- 47:28sitting drinking a couple beers. To me, the arguments are what
- 47:32makes it fun. So I agree with you, it probably
- 47:35made more sense for NASCAR to put 30 in, But if they only put
- 47:38three in every year, it keeps the discussion alive every year.
- 47:43And I think that's what's fun. Like with baseball, you know,
- 47:45baseball, it's always should Barry Bonds be in?
- 47:47How do you handle the PED guy? Should this guy be in?
- 47:50Are they letting everybody in? And like, we all get passionate
- 47:53about it. We know it's at the end of the
- 47:55day, it's not that huge of a deal, but it's kind of fun to
- 47:57talk about. Yeah.
- 47:58And you're you're right, Charlie, that what you just
- 48:00said. It's been the same thing thrown
- 48:03back, thrown back at me when I, when I express my feelings about
- 48:06that. I've heard that from numerous
- 48:07people. This exact same thing you said.
- 48:10But you know, thinking about something, you know, the biggest
- 48:12travesty is it travesty in Hall of Fame.
- 48:15You know what it is. Is it?
- 48:17Is it What sport is it? Baseball.
- 48:20Pete Rose. No doubt.
- 48:23No doubt. And I and I know I hear all the
- 48:26arguments about that, but my God almighty, we can, We can.
- 48:30We can never criticize our our NASCAR Hall of Fame as long as
- 48:34Pete Rose is not in the ML Baseball Hall of Fame.
- 48:37We cannot criticize our Hall of Fame because that's the biggest
- 48:40travesty in sports. Case closed.
- 48:43All right, another day. Let's I'll tell you what another
- 48:46day we should we should have a little debate on that, although
- 48:48I I don't. Have a strong take, I don't.
- 48:50Have a strong take, but I can always just find my way into an.
- 48:52Argument on. On any topic I've.
- 48:54Noticed that. Yeah, let's finish the Hall of
- 48:57Fame. Ralph Moody again.
- 48:59I'm not going to pretend like I knew a ton about him until I
- 49:01just read about him recently, but a famous and successful
- 49:05obviously mechanic and race strategist.
- 49:08Yeah. The only interaction I ever had
- 49:11with Ralph Moody, I'm a young fledgling race car driver.
- 49:14Right. And I talked earlier about going
- 49:16to these sales, you know trying to buy a piece of air equip line
- 49:19or something. Richard Giles bodies $75, what
- 49:21you call it valve ground. I go for some reason or another
- 49:26I stop in home and Moody's shop. All right.
- 49:29And I don't know these people from Adam, but I'm I'm a
- 49:31fledgling race car driver. I've got AI guess at that point
- 49:35I'm running late model sports with this is before the Busch
- 49:37series and we're in I'm in Charlotte might have been one of
- 49:41those sales I don't know but for some reason I just stopped at
- 49:44home and Moody shop. I don't know why the hell I
- 49:45stopped there but like man this is like this is like big you
- 49:49know bug eyed race car driver going to home and Moody shop.
- 49:52This is cool and I go in the shop and I'm kind of looking
- 49:55around and the guy comes up to me Can I help you Sir.
- 49:57I said no, I'm just, you know, I'm in the area.
- 50:00I told, but I gave him my name and I'm, I said I'm going to got
- 50:03a light ball I'll try to run up to Virginia and I'm just want to
- 50:06stop in here and look, this guy said come on and this guy walks
- 50:09me through the place, right? And then he takes me to his
- 50:12office and we sat down and I sit down in this office and I
- 50:16probably an hour and a half or longer talking to this guy.
- 50:22Right? And his name is Ralph Friggin
- 50:24Moody. You know what I'm saying?
- 50:26I'm like and I don't even know exactly for sure who the hell
- 50:29I'm even talking to at the time goes, you know, I'm removed from
- 50:32that deal for being in for Virginia.
- 50:35But I knew it was home and Moody and Moody.
- 50:37This is the that's on the on the building home and Moody and and
- 50:41this is the Moody, that part of home and Moody, that's on the
- 50:43side, right. I didn't understand at that
- 50:47moment. In the moment I didn't
- 50:48understand the significance. I didn't understand what it
- 50:51meant. I didn't understand all that.
- 50:52But I always look back at that thinking, damn, that was cool,
- 50:56that guy. But between walking through the
- 50:58shop and sitting down with me, I mean, it was well of two, 2 1/2
- 51:01hours, right? This guy just sat down and he
- 51:04explained racing to me. He we were talking about
- 51:07chassis, we were talking about cars.
- 51:09The main thing we're talking about was chassis, right?
- 51:12Because I was just somebody just thirsted for knowledge about
- 51:15chassis and race cars and how they, how they handled what,
- 51:18what it took to make them work and on and on and on.
- 51:20And I was, at that time I was building boat race cars too,
- 51:22right? So it was just to me was just
- 51:25fascinated. Somebody like this would take
- 51:27that amount of time with somebody just walk through the
- 51:30door some fledgling kid, right? And just take his time to do
- 51:35that. And I've, I've always thought
- 51:37about that with that guy, right? I'm like, damn, that was pretty
- 51:40cool. You think?
- 51:42Because you can I tell you what, I go to some other owner shops
- 51:44at all and they like, get the hell out of my way.
- 51:46What you doing in here, boy? You know what I mean.
- 51:49You you were treated like that at different places.
- 51:51But man, man, oh man, what a special do you.
- 51:54What a special, what a special conversation.
- 51:56End time. That's very cool.
- 51:58Let's let's move on here we'll we'll finish up with the the
- 52:02Coke 600. Just give us your thoughts, any
- 52:05stories from your past. And also I mean is, is it that
- 52:09big of a difference your your longest race in NASCAR?
- 52:12Can you feel that? Is it more mentally wearing on a
- 52:16driver, grinding on you when you're going 600?
- 52:19Charlie, the first time I went to the World 600, it was start.
- 52:23It would start at what, 12 or 1:00 or whatever.
- 52:26I remember the first couple races down there in that deal
- 52:30getting out of the car, and this is before I'd run, maybe two of
- 52:33them before I ever got my big time deal with Skull and I had
- 52:38started working. At that point.
- 52:40I had really started working with UVA trainer with a program
- 52:43to get myself physically fit, and it reminded me when the race
- 52:49was over, I'd get out of the car and look up and down the pit Rd.
- 52:52of the garage. It reminded me of a deer
- 52:55slaughter and what I mean drivers laying down on the
- 52:59ground, everybody fan of them. Coats.
- 53:02I mean towels. Water being poured on them,
- 53:05Medics running around giving Ivs, giving fluids, right.
- 53:09I'm like damn. And and and and you and you.
- 53:13Hell, I was probably involved in it myself too.
- 53:15I I was putting more out, dehydrated and done.
- 53:18But it was. But that's what it reminded me
- 53:21of. Dude.
- 53:21It was so brutal. Golly, it was brutal.
- 53:24Now what happened when they went to the night race, it was like
- 53:29you'd start the race at 5 or whatever and you'd be running
- 53:32along. You start to get a little tired
- 53:34or whatever, and then the night cool air would start hitting
- 53:37into the car is like, you regenerated, man.
- 53:39The last part of the race is like, man, this is cool, 'cause
- 53:43you feel as good now or better than we did when the race
- 53:45started, you know, And but yeah, it it it, it's a big deal if
- 53:50they run the race at 1:00 in the daytime and it's 95° outside.
- 53:55Believe what I'm telling you, even today with today's car and
- 53:59today's driver, that race is going to be over and it's still
- 54:02going to look like a damn deer slaughter.
- 54:03All right, let it be 95°. Start the race at 1:00 and I'm
- 54:07telling you, you'll see what I'm talking about.
- 54:09But OK, one of the interest things one of the interesting
- 54:13things happening one time we were there and we had.
- 54:18I had me and my wife we had went to a restaurant there at the
- 54:23Concord Mills right at a place one of the rest anyhow ate get
- 54:30food poisoning right Sunday's the the race man.
- 54:35I'm sick of the dog. I spend all day Sunday in the
- 54:38Enfield care and they're just publicly full of fluids.
- 54:42We start that race. I mean, I'm still not in good
- 54:45shape. And we start that race and we
- 54:47run that race and we run and we run and finally, this is at
- 54:51night time, we have a rain delay.
- 54:54It starts raining. So they stop the red flag of the
- 54:57race. I immediately leave the car, go
- 55:00to the Enfield care center. They hook up IV to be pumped
- 55:04fluids into me again and by the time I come out of there, man,
- 55:08I'm starved. I begged my crew guys, told him
- 55:10to go get me some fried chicken and eat the fried chicken.
- 55:14I put something like that on Facebook a while back and one of
- 55:17the one of the my PR band, Michael Rump.
- 55:19At the time, he had to correct a few of the little things about
- 55:22the store. He said I'm the one that brought
- 55:24the chicken and we didn't bring it to infield carry.
- 55:26We actually took it to the car to you right when you get back
- 55:29in the car. So you know when you start that
- 55:32race, you got food, poison, you're like, man, I'm not going
- 55:34to make it, I'm not going to make it.
- 55:36But the the medical care I received at the at the field
- 55:39care of those guys, it was pretty remarkable.
- 55:43All right, let's end on this note then, because the fact that
- 55:46it's a night race, at least now allows for Kyle Larson to to
- 55:51pull off this double. So what, what do you think of,
- 55:54and it's been done before, obviously, but what do you think
- 55:56of Larson's attempt, which is, you know, it's great for all of
- 55:59racing and NASCAR. It's what everybody's talking
- 56:01about, really, the whole month. Yeah, it's the coolest thing,
- 56:04man. It's the coolest thing.
- 56:06I mean he's, you know, I mean he's been compared as the as the
- 56:09greatest ever. And here we go again with social
- 56:11media, man. They're all the hell.
- 56:13Everybody's fighting, right. So somebody said, well, this
- 56:16will put him in contention to be in the talks of the greatest
- 56:20race car driver in the world, right?
- 56:21Lord have mercy. The F1 people come out of the
- 56:23woodwork now. Everybody, now, everybody's
- 56:25fighting between him and what's his name, Max Burbett and
- 56:28whatever his name is, right? Yeah, yeah, that's it.
- 56:31And I'm like, come on guys, just enjoy the boat, everybody.
- 56:35Quit your damn fighting on social media.
- 56:37But, but, but Kyle and and we all know this, he's a
- 56:40generational, generational talent, right?
- 56:43And you know who else is like that?
- 56:46We know AJ Foyt, Mario, that's it.
- 56:50I mean that's really it AJ and Barrio and this guy comes along
- 56:54doing what he's doing and it's not I don't think that anybody
- 56:58that this guy is college driven for even the even the the dirt,
- 57:03the dirt car late model guy that he drives for the Sprint cars he
- 57:07does the of course Mr. Henrick and all those people.
- 57:10I don't think if you really get down to it, I don't think any of
- 57:13them were surprised about what Kyle's doing it into right
- 57:17'cause they know how how talented this little dude is.
- 57:22Hell, it doesn't matter. Put him in a car.
- 57:23If it's a race car, he's going to get the most out of that race
- 57:26car. And God, what a story would be
- 57:29if he's to win that thing, you know, that's that's that's going
- 57:32to be very, very hard to do. But you know, he's good enough
- 57:35talent to do it, dude. Yeah that's you know I can't
- 57:39remember who said this because I've I've just seen so many
- 57:42interviews it it was a a famous cup guy now and I don't even
- 57:46want to pretend to remember who it was.
- 57:47But they basically said they were asked what do you think
- 57:50will happen with Kyle Larson in the Indy 500.
- 57:53And this guy just said well I think he's going to win it and
- 57:56he said it so matter of factly he goes that's just that is how
- 58:00much respect I have for Kyle Larson as a race car driver that
- 58:05that I don't think he's just going there for fun to finish
- 58:07whatever it is 17th. No, he's like, it would not
- 58:10surprise me one bit if he wins the actual race.
- 58:13Yeah, it would surprise me. And you can bet your butt the
- 58:16Rick Hendrick makes sure that he's in a car that's capable
- 58:19winning. Yeah, OK.
- 58:21I mean, well, look what Kurt Busch did.
- 58:22Kurt, I thought in it. I don't know why it doesn't get
- 58:24as much play as it does, but I thought what Kurt Busch did that
- 58:27year was phenomenal, right? We do totally do.
- 58:30Well, when he did it because he came, he, he he drove those
- 58:33cars. He already do that.
- 58:34Kurt Busch did never give them cars and he went up there and
- 58:38we'll have to look the stats up. I forget the stats, but man, he
- 58:41was up there in the top deal the whole time he was up there,
- 58:43right? And then then when Kyle comes
- 58:45along, you bet your ass that that the deal was done with,
- 58:49with with McLaren and all that with Hendrick, that yeah, we
- 58:52we're going to let Kyle do this, but if he's going to do this,
- 58:55he's going to have a legitimate shot at winning from from a team
- 58:59standpoint, OK? And I think that part part was
- 59:02probably already covered. And the rest of us up to, you
- 59:05know, the luck and the engineers and the set up and all that.
- 59:08But, you know, like I said, that goes back to what I just said,
- 59:14Charlie, you don't. And what you just said, you
- 59:15don't. I don't think there's anybody
- 59:17that that's surprised that knows Kyle put it this way, people
- 59:21that's worked with Kyle, right, that like the driver said, yeah,
- 59:24he'll win. You know, no big deal.
- 59:26You know, we know. We know who he is, what he is.
- 59:29Right. Right.
- 59:29So that would be so friendly. Cool.
- 59:31But that's going to be fun to watch.
- 59:33And I always say watch for my tweet.
- 59:35Man, I've been doing this for for a few years.
- 59:39Or it's AX. What do you call it?
- 59:40You don't tweet. What do you do?
- 59:41You don't. You don't tweet you.
- 59:44XI guess you do. It's called, It's called Posting
- 59:47now on X you. Post on X instead of saying I
- 59:49tweeted, all right, that's what I got to do.
- 59:51Yeah, Each year I put on their own and I'll do it again Sunday
- 59:54morning or sometimes Sunday. I'll say I just had Bacardi for
- 59:58breakfast, right? Eating some wine and cheese for
- 1:00:01lunch and I'll be eating fried chicken and beer for supper,
- 1:00:04baby, right. And not a lot of most people get
- 1:00:08it, but a lot of people don't get that right.
- 1:00:10Bacardi for breakfast, Wild cheese for In fact, Jay Fry got,
- 1:00:14you know, Jay Jay's a He's a whatever.
- 1:00:19He's a Mizzou guy. Played football Mizzou.
- 1:00:21Yeah, yeah. But he's he's the president of
- 1:00:23IndyCar races. Yeah, of IndyCar.
- 1:00:25Yeah, yeah, you know, I posted that one year and Jay got bad at
- 1:00:28me. We eat plenty of fried chicken
- 1:00:30and and beer in Indianapolis 500.
- 1:00:32Rick, we don't just eat wine and cheese.
- 1:00:35That was pretty fun. So anyhow, everybody gets your
- 1:00:38Bacardi, your wine and cheese, and your beer and chicken for
- 1:00:41Sunday. I love it.
- 1:00:43Fantastic. Well, Rick, this was really fun.
- 1:00:45I I think, first of all, we've had some good episodes.
- 1:00:48I think this so far has been our best.
- 1:00:51Some great stories from you and also NASCAR is really hot right
- 1:00:55now. Like everything is trending.
- 1:00:58Anything you put out there about the fight, people are watching
- 1:01:01and consuming. It's good for business, buddy.
- 1:01:03And you know what? Some of the guys, we'll get into
- 1:01:06this sometimes. Some of the negative, some of
- 1:01:08the negative journalists that just rag on our ass all the time
- 1:01:11in our sport. It's been quiet all week.
- 1:01:14It's been quiet. I've been 'cause I personally go
- 1:01:17to their sites and look at what they're saying and writing and
- 1:01:20posting on X. And I'm like, where you at,
- 1:01:23guys, right? But they still come up with
- 1:01:25something negative. But I've enjoyed watching it.
- 1:01:28Someday we'll get into that. Maybe even name names for these
- 1:01:31assholes, you know? That.
- 1:01:33That that beat on us and don't like us, but get.
- 1:01:35I love it and and my thing is, look, I look at it all as
- 1:01:39content, a fight, an argument, negativity.
- 1:01:43It's. All, hey, it's it's any
- 1:01:45publicity is good publicity, even if it's negative.
- 1:01:48People are. And you know what's worse?
- 1:01:49What's worse is when nobody talks about you, Bill.
- 1:01:52Frank Senior would love you. Charlie, Bill, Frank Senior
- 1:01:54would have loved you, yes. All right, Rick, We'll see you,
- 1:01:58man. This was fun.
- 1:01:59Take it. Easy.
- 1:01:59See you guys. Take care.
