Latest / Rusty's Garage / Tabitha Ambrose - racing with a famous surname
Transcript
- 0:00Hello you.
- 0:00How are you?
- 0:01I'm good.
- 0:01I'm good.
- 0:02Thank you.
- 0:02This is crazy for me because I can remember you know you and your sister and the news of kind of your arrival into the world if you will and crazily the Rust daughters are a very similar age to you and your sister so to think that we're
- 0:23The fact that you are on your own motorsport journey, I love.
- 0:27Clearly, Dad is of inspiration to you.
- 0:30But what was the first thing that you can maybe remember that you were drawn to it?
- 0:35What was it?
- 0:36Well, I've spent my whole life around racing.
- 0:38Obviously, Dad raced in America.
- 0:40And so we spent every weekend at the track with him.
- 0:43And so I've been around the racing... What do you call it?
- 0:47It's like the racing...
- 0:50I like the word for it, the racing family all my life.
- 0:54And then, um, dad said, oh, let's, let's give it a go.
- 0:57Let's put you in a little pink go-kart.
- 0:59And so there we, there we went, did a test day in a little pink go-kart.
- 1:03This is in America.
- 1:04Oh no, in Australia.
- 1:05Sorry.
- 1:06Um, yeah, no, so, and then once we come back to Australia, everything kind of settled down for dad, he did less racing himself and then he focused on other projects.
- 1:14And so, and then he was like, well, you know, do you want to have a go in a little pink go-kart?
- 1:17I think it'll be fun.
- 1:18We borrowed one of our friends, little pink go karts and, um, in Tassie, so at Launceston Kart Club, uh, which is really cool.
- 1:27And then, yeah, and then it all just kind of spiraled from there.
- 1:30And, um, and then COVID really kind of messed us up just with the whole trajectory of everything.
- 1:34Obviously you're locked down, can't do much racing.
- 1:37Dad started building sims.
- 1:39And so if I wasn't in the go kart, I was on the sim.
- 1:41He had a motion sim, which was really cool.
- 1:42So the VR, the motion sim, and yeah, I just, I started loving it.
- 1:46He and I might have had a quiet few gin and tonics one night and he showed me that sim, which was remarkable.
- 1:51And at that stage, the whole advent of sims was sort of on this, this huge growth.
- 1:55But I love how he is.
- 1:58He's always thinking about stuff like that, isn't he?
- 2:00About what he could do, how he could do it and so on.
- 2:04You've missed a little element of the story, and I wouldn't mind bringing it out if that's okay.
- 2:07Brett Murray, who's here in the studio with us, reminded me today.
- 2:10He's been around motor racing, public relations, Speed Cafe, you name it, for many, many years.
- 2:15And he reminded me of this beautiful picture, I want to say, of you at school.
- 2:21Dad brought the NASCAR.
- 2:22You must have been at school in Charlotte, I think, were you?
- 2:25And, you know, he brought the race car to school.
- 2:28That was quite a big day, wasn't it?
- 2:30Oh, absolutely.
- 2:31I mean, it was the best bring your dad to school day.
- 2:32I can't quite remember it, but I think they had this, like –
- 2:38And then dad was like, Oh yeah, I'm coming to school today.
- 2:40And I was like, Oh cool.
- 2:41And then all of a sudden they wheel out this, um, they bring out the hauler and they have the NASCAR come out and then dad's in his race suit and all the kids are kind of getting around it.
- 2:48Cause there's such a big culture around NASCAR in America.
- 2:49It's huge.
- 2:50So, um, it's a big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big
- 3:00No, it was a really awesome day.
- 3:01And then dad was like, oh, well, you know, we don't have time for everyone to sit in the NASCAR.
- 3:05So I got to sit in the NASCAR.
- 3:07So that was really cool.
- 3:08And it ended up being the same car as I just raced at Adelaide Motorsport Festival.
- 3:13So it was a big full circle moment for us as a family.
- 3:15It was really, really cool.
- 3:17Can we go there?
- 3:18I mean, you know, podcasts and sometimes I do things in a timeline, right?
- 3:21But we don't have to here.
- 3:22So let's go there because...
- 3:24You got to test it, I think, in the lead up.
- 3:26There were a couple of little lessons around that for you too, weren't there?
- 3:29I mean, it's such a massive amount more horsepower, 700 plus horsepower, compared to the Formula Ford.
- 3:36What the heck was that thing like?
- 3:37It was just insane when they reached out...
- 3:39And so dad and I, we kind of looked at each other and we're like, oh, I'm going to have a race car.
- 3:43And I'm going to have a race car.
- 3:44And I'm going to have a race car.
- 3:46And I'm going to have a race car.
- 3:47And I'm going to have a race car.
- 3:48And I'm going to have a race car.
- 3:49And I'm going to have a race car.
- 3:50And I'm going to have a race car.
- 3:52And I'm going to have a race car.
- 3:53And I'm going to have a race car.
- 3:54And I'm going to have a race car.
- 3:56And I'm going to have a race car.
- 3:57And I'm going to have a race car.
- 4:02Am I actually ready for this?
- 4:03Can I, can I actually step into this NASCAR and be ready and be comfortable?
- 4:07And so we thought, well, we might just do a test day at QR and see how that goes.
- 4:11Won't lock ourselves into anything.
- 4:13Cause if it's not right, then we won't do it.
- 4:15Don't want to really put myself in a situation, put Jared, the car owner in that situation to like step out in Adelaide and just not be ready.
- 4:21It's just, it's not a, it's not a great look like you want to go out there and you just want to be professional and you want to be, you want to be ready for it.
- 4:27Do it properly.
- 4:27Exactly.
- 4:28So, um, no, the test day at QR went really, really well.
- 4:31Um, it was a lot of fun.
- 4:33How, how eye opening?
- 4:34I know it was very eye opening.
- 4:36And I said to dad, the first thing I said to dad was, gee, I just got down the straight so fast.
- 4:40One minute I was like on the, on corner exit and then I was into turn one and it was just so quick.
- 4:45But, um, I think.
- 4:47The Formula Ford has taught me a lot, um, because it is such a light, I know it doesn't have the horsepower behind it, but because it's such a light car, um, it does, it kind of gives the effect of having a lot of power under your foot, if that makes sense.
- 5:00That's true.
- 5:00In a relative sense.
- 5:01In a relative sense, because you can't just put the throttle on, otherwise, you know, you'll, you'll lose the rear.
- 5:06So, um, just, it has this kind of the same quirks as maybe as you would.
- 5:10And when you hop into a higher horsepower car, cause like when you put the throttle on the NASCAR, like that thing goes.
- 5:17So, um, no, it was, it was good.
- 5:19The formula forward got me ready for it, but the amount of horsepower, I don't think anything can really prepare you for that.
- 5:24The formula forward is something that, um, both of you, both you and your dad are very passionate about.
- 5:30And there's a lot of great history in this country.
- 5:32So many good people have come through it.
- 5:34Most of the good people say you really need to go and do that along the way.
- 5:38And you've been kind of steadfast in that approach, haven't you?
- 5:41Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:42We've got, um, family heritage with the Formula Ford.
- 5:45Yeah.
- 5:45Poppy, um, Ross Ambrose, he, you know, he kind of started the whole Formula Ford thing for the family with Van Diemen, um, and his roots with Formula Ford and then dad raced Formula Ford in Australia and in Europe and he's quite passionate about it.
- 5:57And then, um, we kind of hopped out of the XLs, looked around and said, what's next?
- 6:02What am I, what am I going to do?
- 6:03We couldn't race Formula Ford in Tasmania and that's kind of.
- 6:05And so for me, it was, it was Formula Ford just learning the craft rear wheel drive.
- 6:08And so for me, it was, it was Formula Ford just learning the craft rear wheel drive.
- 6:10And so for me, it was just a little bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit
- 6:27Um, and I've just had a lot of fun in it.
- 6:29This is my second year in the formula ford.
- 6:31I learned heaps the first year in the second year, in the second year, I just want to kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind
- 6:42cement everything that I've learned and go out there and just, um, go out there and just kill it.
- 6:47Gotcha.
- 6:47Basically.
- 6:48You are doing that with a nice tip of the hat to the color scheme that dad ran in that iconic period in supercars, right?
- 6:56I can remember the release coming out in February last year and, and, um, it immediately transported you back 20 or so years.
- 7:03And then even this year, I think with the subtle fluro touches, that's very reminiscent of 04, I think, isn't it?
- 7:08So, yeah, 04 or 05.
- 7:09Yeah.
- 7:09Yeah.
- 7:10Yeah.
- 7:10No, I'm so grateful to have, um, protect back on board this year.
- 7:14I mean, it's so cool with the family heritage, um, and they're, they're really big on, um, passing down.
- 7:20So a lot of franchisees have now had kids and, and they're growing up and now they're passing on their franchise to maybe their, um, their children.
- 7:28And so it's, it's really cool cause dad and I, we can kind of represent that as like the passing down.
- 7:32Yeah.
- 7:33Yeah.
- 7:33Yeah.
- 7:34Have you learned from, I mean, this is a business, right?
- 7:38Like at the end of the day, it's something that you want to pursue and I'm pursuing very passionately.
- 7:42But I mean, it's from all the back end stuff that you need to do.
- 7:46How big has the learning curve on that side been?
- 7:49Learning to deal with corporates.
- 7:51You're in a podcast scenario today.
- 7:53You might have been at Mount Panaramba Bathurst with Repco and doing some talks and so on.
- 7:57And, you know, fun bits of content for people.
- 8:01I mean, that is a massive.
- 8:02How big is that learning been?
- 8:04I know there's a lot within the driving, but you've also got to represent yourself and you're representing brands like representing Pertec, representing Repco.
- 8:15And so you've got to learn when to bite your tongue.
- 8:18You've got to learn when to bite your tongue.
- 8:20You've got to learn when to bite your tongue.
- 8:23You've got to learn when to bite your tongue.
- 8:25You've got to learn when to bite your tongue.
- 8:27You've got to learn when to bite your tongue.
- 8:29Um, and you've got to learn how to speak in front of people.
- 8:31That was something that I was not so good at.
- 8:33I found that I talk a million miles an hour.
- 8:35Um, I can't quite, you know, get the words out that I want to say.
- 8:38And so just being able to learn how to represent myself and represent a brand and talk to people, I think has been huge.
- 8:47Your dad can obviously bring a lot of learnings from his time and all of that, right?
- 8:51I mean, the, the amazing things that he did in his career.
- 8:54but you're also in a different generation.
- 8:57So I love the fact that you listen, right?
- 8:59That's very clear that whether it's around the team of people that you're with, you mentioned Crush there a moment ago, but what's it like with dad?
- 9:07Because you carry the surname and that is both blessing, but also spotlight at a very early phase of your career that other competitors would not necessarily have.
- 9:21No, absolutely.
- 9:22Um, having dad in my corner has been great.
- 9:23I mean, we're both team Ambrose.
- 9:26Um, for him, he's got his reputation, like he's Marcus Ambrose, you know, he's this, um, supercar champion, went over to NASCAR and he represents Marcus Ambrose.
- 9:36And so he also represents the Ambrose name.
- 9:38And so to step into it as well, like I've got to now represent the Ambrose name.
- 9:42Gotcha.
- 9:43And so that holds a little bit of weight for me because, you know, I don't obviously want to do anything to, um, to.
- 9:50You want to build on that, don't you?
- 9:51Yeah, I want to build on the Ambrose name.
- 9:52I don't want to just, you know, cut it down.
- 9:54So, um, just being able to, um, I don't know, represent myself on social media too, I think is so important as well.
- 10:01Is dad helpful with that or not really?
- 10:02No.
- 10:03Oh my goodness.
- 10:04No, he is not.
- 10:05We...
- 10:07And I'm adding him on the podcast right now, but, um, the Marcus Ambrose motorsport, that's, that's probably, well, you can tell when, when dad makes a post on Marcus Ambrose Motorsport because it is so authentically him.
- 10:20It's like he's talking.
- 10:21Yeah, exactly.
- 10:22And so I think, um, 80% of the time it's me and so I've learned how to, you know, write up a little Instagram post or something, trying to, trying to update people, not necessarily give a race report because I, um.
- 10:35you know, with all the stats and everything, because I think a lot of people just like to know about the journey and also the behind the scenes stuff to actually get out on the track.
- 10:44We ran the little race team last year.
- 10:45And so I learned a lot about what actually goes into running a race team.
- 10:50In a kind of coordination and business sense and everything else.
- 10:53That's a lot.
- 10:53So I ended up being in charge of the logistics.
- 10:57So I'm booking the accommodation, changing accommodation, like invoices, um, travel flights.
- 11:04That was a big one.
- 11:04I learned a lot, um, at Darwin with, um, the time, time zones and also like AM flights and, and, um, PM flights.
- 11:11We ended up booking like a AM flight for the next day because we got all confused about, um, which day we were trying to fly out.
- 11:18So, um, I think it's a big one.
- 11:19But otherwise it's been a really great journey.
- 11:21And so to learn from the different sides of, you know, the, um, the representing Ambrose and then also being a part of a team, helping a team owner because dad was a team owner last year and then also being a race car driver.
- 11:35Like I feel like I've got all these little hats that I've put on throughout my very short career in motorsport.
- 11:40And you are, I think, as you said before, you are telling your own story and writing your own pages in that, right?
- 11:45We're still very early in that, in that story.
- 11:49the six hour, you're going to do that again.
- 11:51And we're going to release this pod in the run, in the run up to that class victory there last year.
- 11:57I mean, that was, that was really cool.
- 11:58Wasn't it?
- 11:59Oh no, it was so cool.
- 12:00And to do it with, um, two other girls by my side as well, Carly and Courtney, it was a lot of fun.
- 12:05Um, I've never been in an old girl's setting before, like all my peers have been, have been guys and that's just what I'm, I'm used to.
- 12:12Yep.
- 12:12And so to step in the car with them in this little girl driver team that we've got, it's not an all girls team.
- 12:18It's just like the three girls.
- 12:20In the front line.
- 12:21Yeah.
- 12:21So, um, but yeah, it was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to going back there this weekend.
- 12:27Little birdie tells me you cheekily said to dad, I'm the first Ambrose to walk away with the Bathurst trophy.
- 12:32Is this true?
- 12:33It is.
- 12:33It is true.
- 12:34It is.
- 12:35I think that was the first thing that Crutch said to me after we won that.
- 12:39Make sure you tell him that.
- 12:40No, he knows.
- 12:41Don't worry.
- 12:42He knows.
- 12:42I'm sure he does.
- 12:43I mean, the great initiatives, and there are many of them around women in motorsport, are something that you are
- 12:49very giving and happy to be a part of.
- 12:50But I sense in you two you are racer.
- 12:53This is your own story.
- 12:54So it is a collective of all of those things, isn't it?
- 12:56But in the same breath, whether it's the business side, the driving side, whatever, that's, is that where you're at?
- 13:04Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:05That's where I'm at.
- 13:05I'm just, I'm another competitor.
- 13:07I'm just another person in motorsport trying to make it.
- 13:10Um, I think to an extent we've all got an equal playing field.
- 13:14Um, whether you're like a team owner or, you know, a mechanic in, in the workshop or a driver, I think that everyone's got their, um.
- 13:22There's just so many different pathways in motorsport now.
- 13:24And I love, I love the initiative that they've got with the girls on track.
- 13:27I think that's awesome in, um, bringing more women and, and just teaching them that, you know, this is your space too, because it is, it's everyone's space.
- 13:35I don't think.
- 13:35And it's good for our game, the inclusivity, the, whatever you want to call it.
- 13:38Yeah.
- 13:38Yeah.
- 13:39I just think it's anyone's space.
- 13:40It's anyone's game at the end of the day.
- 13:42I love that from a a storytelling point of view where do you want this to go what is the what is the kind of short and and we probably should tell people that um and you alluded to it I think a little bit around COVID and stuff that you had a plan here didn't you there there has been I don't know how cemented and solid that was maybe it was a loose plan but there was there was you know an idea of where you wanted to go with this wasn't there
- 14:06Absolutely.
- 14:06I mean, dad sat me down pretty early on and said, we're not going to go up to Europe.
- 14:10Like that's not what's going to happen.
- 14:12Um, we're going to be very realistic about it.
- 14:14And so that's the approach that we've had throughout, even in the go-karting, we've just kind of taken it one year at a time, one step at a time and just looking at, okay, we've kind of wrapped that up.
- 14:22What's next.
- 14:24And it's, we just, I want, I want it to take me as far as I, I can handle it.
- 14:28Um, and so, you know, maybe three years down the line, if it's not fun, then we're not going to do it.
- 14:34That is, crushes looking at us over our shoulder.
- 14:36That's his kind of mantra, isn't it?
- 14:37Like it's got to be fun.
- 14:38It's got to be fun.
- 14:40Um, and I've got to be capable.
- 14:41You know, I'm not, I'm not there just to participate.
- 14:44Like I want to be, I want to be in the front.
- 14:46I want to be fighting for, for a title.
- 14:48I want to be fighting for it.
- 14:49So, you know, in a couple of years, if I, if I step sideways or, you know, I try and make it, it doesn't quite work.
- 14:55There's always going to be a spot for me in motorsport.
- 14:57somewhere along the line, might be, you know, in a team working with the logistics as I learned last year, or, you know, it might even be something a little bit more exciting, like being on TV or trying to be in the social media side of things.
- 15:08So I know that, um, if I don't make it as a driver, I'm going to sidestep and hopefully try and build a career in motorsport otherwise.
- 15:16But the kind of zero – that is a – let's call it – they're alternate possibilities.
- 15:24But there is like a zero focus thing on driving, right?
- 15:28Yes, all the other business learnings about it, but a zero focus on the driving.
- 15:31So do you –
- 15:34my buddy lee diffie who you know the the uh you know former indycar caller and now calling nascar and stuff he's got this great line a very appropriate line about a calling card as you take those next steps on the ladder you need a calling card to be able to say hey i'm the you know whatever i uh my cv shows that i've won the formula four championship and so on so is that the kind of thing now we want to get a couple of those things on the on the ticked list if
- 15:59I'm looking at the bigger picture, you know, I do want to make it in the highest form of racing possible.
- 16:08Like I'd love to race supercar and I'd love to go to America and, you know, race NASCAR and just build myself up.
- 16:14But I do have to, I do have to be very realistic and, you know, take it one year at a time.
- 16:20Did you test a Trans Am, true or false?
- 16:22Have you driven one?
- 16:23True.
- 16:23True.
- 16:24True.
- 16:24Can you tell me about that experience?
- 16:26I can.
- 16:27I did two sessions in a Trans Am.
- 16:30At Winton?
- 16:31At Winton, bedding and brakes.
- 16:33Did you?
- 16:33Yeah.
- 16:34Yeah.
- 16:35And I kept running off the track because it's, you know, it's, it's on the other side, like you're driving on the other side and the car is so big too.
- 16:41Like I came from a formula Ford.
- 16:43I know the NASCAR is big as well, but the Trans Am was just very wide.
- 16:46And so I kept running off the track and dad's like, you've got to keep it on the black stuff.
- 16:50What are you doing?
- 16:51And I'm like, I don't know.
- 16:53It's a really difficult thing.
- 16:55I'm speaking from a parent perspective now, and I can only imagine what it is like for Marcus, right?
- 16:59Because at the end of the day, you want your son, your daughter to avoid pitfalls, things that you might have done in your own life, and you wish only the very best for them success.
- 17:08But at the end of the day, you have to walk your own road.
- 17:11Is there, what is that conversation like for you guys around that stuff?
- 17:14Because he's got this beautiful knowledge bank of things that you can draw from.
- 17:18He's a great straight shooter, often in the way that he tells you things.
- 17:22What's that like being around him for that stuff?
- 17:25And, you know, we covered the fact before that you listen, which I think is terrific.
- 17:29But sometimes in that generational thing, the age that you're at now, the natural reaction for a lot of kids is to roll their eyes and go, okay, Dad, like, you know, you don't know social media or you don't know blah, blah, blah.
- 17:38But I feel like you have a beautiful relationship, you guys.
- 17:42Even that massive road trip you did last year where you went to Darwin and then back to Queensland or whatever.
- 17:47It was a beautiful time on the road there with Dad, wasn't it?
- 17:49Yeah, I've spent a lot of time with dad over the past couple of years.
- 17:52I'd like to say that it was a mix of both.
- 17:54I'm like, yeah, right.
- 17:55Okay, dad.
- 17:56And then sometimes I actually do listen and, um, it's, it's our biggest conversation at the dinner table.
- 18:01We talk about it at dinner.
- 18:02We talk about it on the road.
- 18:04Our lives are just motorsport.
- 18:05That's all we talk about.
- 18:06So, and then we're on the sim and then when I'm not on the sim, he's on the sim.
- 18:10Yeah.
- 18:10And so it's, it's really funny because we're all, we're constantly trying to beat each other's lifetimes on the sim.
- 18:16And so we do, we have this rivalry on the sim.
- 18:18And then when we, when we're at the dinner table, we're just constantly talking about it, you know, about motorsport, different ideas and what he's doing and then about my racing as well and what we're going to do there.
- 18:27And then when we're in the office, we're talking about motorsports.
- 18:30So it is, and we've got to try and find other things to talk about, but because we're both so passionate about it and we both love it and in the industry, um,
- 18:39It ends up being quite old.
- 18:40Yeah, it just ends up being motorsport.
- 18:42The balance might come a little bit from your beautiful mum, who's been an amazing photographer over time, like Julia Ringel.
- 18:48She's got a really good eye for it.
- 18:49And your sister isn't, I wouldn't say she's not into motorising, because she's acutely aware of what you're doing and obviously what dad's done and so on.
- 18:56And we've seen her at some big events and things along the way.
- 18:59But I don't feel like necessarily that's the path she wants to get full on into like you do.
- 19:05No, she, she's actually started, um, she's a dental assistant now.
- 19:08Fantastic.
- 19:09I know.
- 19:09So she's gone into healthcare.
- 19:11Okay.
- 19:11So at least one of us has, you know, gone on to do something to help.
- 19:15Don't be harsh on yourself.
- 19:16You're doing good things.
- 19:17I know.
- 19:17I know.
- 19:18Um, but no, she, she enjoys motorsport.
- 19:20She loves watching it.
- 19:21Um, you know, and she gets involved in the dinner table conversation.
- 19:24Same with mom.
- 19:25Mom's been telling me how to drive and what I should do on track.
- 19:28She's been getting very vocal.
- 19:30Has she?
- 19:30Um, yeah, even on, even on the top of the, um.
- 19:33And when we're watching like at the bend, I'll use the bend as an example.
- 19:36She's been doing the catering.
- 19:38Okay.
- 19:38And so it is, it's a family thing for us at the racetrack.
- 19:41Like, um, mom gets in and she does the catering and she helps out when she can.
- 19:45And you know, she's cooking up the sausages or whatever she's doing.
- 19:48And then when the race is on, she goes up and she watches and, and
- 19:51Apparently what I've heard, because obviously I'm in the car, she can be very vocal up there, standing there.
- 19:57Animated.
- 19:58Very animated.
- 19:59Very animated.
- 19:59She gets very excited.
- 20:01And she does.
- 20:02She gets very animated.
- 20:03So it is really fun.
- 20:04It's a family thing for us.
- 20:06Adelaide isn't as involved in it anymore.
- 20:09But when she can and takes the time off work, she loves spending time at the track.
- 20:14Awesome.
- 20:14You got to play Fanbassador at Adelaide last year with Dad, and Dad had had success at that amazing event, grand final for supercars and so on, and you did.
- 20:24You two, we joke about him.
- 20:25There's a group of us that joke about him being the energizer bunny because he's just all go, or 10 tenths, whatever, he's one thing to the next and so on.
- 20:32You got to do some cool stuff around that, didn't you?
- 20:35But at the end of it...
- 20:36I think they tell me you jumped in a, I don't know, it was an Uber or whatever it was and you might've been leaving and you had this beautiful bright smile on your face around everything that you'd done and dad gently brought it back to the ground again, didn't he?
- 20:49Just like, like, Hey, it's not always going to be like this.
- 20:52I think he's, that's what he said.
- 20:53Yeah, yeah.
- 20:54He did ground me and he does ground me a lot.
- 20:56Does he?
- 20:57Um, he does, but no, being a fan bastard was awesome.
- 20:59That was actually my first Bathurst, um, that I'd been to the, the first Bathurst 1000 that I'd been to.
- 21:05And so to be a fan ambassador with my dad was really exciting.
- 21:09Um, thanks to Repco.
- 21:10I mean, we got to do so many cool stuff and also show time.
- 21:13So that's also touching on what we spoke about before with the learning how to represent yourself.
- 21:18And so I did, that was the first time that I'd ever been on like a stage in front of an audience and they've got this, um, they've got this little, I forgot what they called it, but it's like this little bus.
- 21:29And the little truck and it's got the stage and it's got the fireworks and and everything and it's all big and loud music.
- 21:35And the first time I got up there, they're like, now you have to dance.
- 21:39And so it was the first time that I was on stage and then I had to dance and then we had to speak and then we were throwing things out into the crowd.
- 21:46We were at the top of the mountain.
- 21:47I'd never been at the top of the mountain before and in with all the, um, the fans camping and everything.
- 21:52And so it was just so much fun and it was actually very eyeopening for me.
- 21:55Was it?
- 21:56Cause it was just like, okay, this is, you know, the activation around that.
- 21:59Repco had so much activation around that.
- 22:02Did that start around that amazing ad that your dad and Murph did?
- 22:05I mean, they were a bit of rivals back in the day.
- 22:07Very funny ad, Jimmy Richards and everything went crazy.
- 22:10Um, I think you were on set for that, were you?
- 22:13Did you watch it and maybe that's how it all kind of started?
- 22:15Yeah, no, I got to, I got to watch, I got to meet the Repco family, which was awesome.
- 22:20Um, and it was, it was a huge production.
- 22:23Like I'd never really been a part of it.
- 22:25I've never really seen a production or the making an ad and, and it was very eyeopening when I got there and they had this massive green screen, these floating trees that went around and then they had the bus and they had all the, um, they had all the actors, uh, and then they had, um, they had Greg and they had dad.
- 22:42And yeah, it was just, it was very, very eye-opening.
- 22:45And I was like, oh, awesome.
- 22:46Well, I love that though, because that shows you how big it can be.
- 22:49It's huge, yeah.
- 22:51Awesome.
- 22:52At the end of last year, you and I got to attend a thing called the Pertec Legends Night.
- 22:57I got to work on that in an MC capacity.
- 22:59I love that.
- 22:59Your dad was the guest of honor that night.
- 23:04And he opened up on his battle with cancer.
- 23:07I was...
- 23:09like many in the room, blown away by that.
- 23:12I think a handful of people probably knew the gravity of what he went through.
- 23:17His candid, very open way that he spoke about that I think was so beneficial for so many people.
- 23:24You saw that behind the scenes and that must have been tougher times.
- 23:29But maybe there's a little something in that that you saw in your dad that's a great kind of life lesson.
- 23:33I mean, he attacked that with just this relentless determination, didn't he?
- 23:41What was that like?
- 23:42It was the fight.
- 23:43For me, it was, you know, the fight.
- 23:45Like, he really...
- 23:47And it was, that was what I looked up to the most.
- 23:53I was like, yeah, that's, that's how you do it.
- 23:55That's how you go about it.
- 23:57Um, and it was awesome and it was such a great night too.
- 24:00Um, and so just to kind of finish off the chapter and to end it in such a great night and, you know, and talk about it and have, um, and also have crushed there was really good because you got to just, you know, just kind of finish off the chapter and to end
- 24:12Control it.
- 24:13Like in his own narrative.
- 24:14He didn't have someone, you know, talking for him.
- 24:16Yes.
- 24:17And so it was really good for you to MC it too and for Crush to be there and everything.
- 24:21And it was just, it just went so smoothly and it couldn't have been done better by better people.
- 24:25It was just, it was the best.
- 24:27Has it made you sort of think, got to, you know, maximize what I do here and live life to the full kind of thing?
- 24:32That's a, that's a...
- 24:34you know, in a sad, but good way, a really, you know, life lesson here.
- 24:37Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 24:38You gotta, you gotta fight for it.
- 24:40And, and that's what I've learned.
- 24:41Like you've got to fight for everything that you do and everything, you know, you, you back to, you have to back yourself.
- 24:46You have to fight, you have to fight for yourself too.
- 24:49Um, and so just, just learning that and how strong a person can actually be.
- 24:54Well done you.
- 24:55This has been ace to chat with you today.
- 24:57I see this pod as just a little introduction to Tabitha Ambrose.
- 25:01You have so many more wonderful chapters to write.
- 25:04I love the perspective that you have in this and that at such a young age, what are you now?
- 25:09How old are you now?
- 25:10I'm 20.
- 25:12Born on the Gold Coast, bulk of your life in the States, and now here you are back where it began for your dad and carrying on that.
- 25:19I mean, it's great that you brought up Poppy before too, third generation in many respects.
- 25:24So we wish you luck with that.
- 25:26And I...
- 25:27I can't wait to get you back in for a follow-up pod at some stage and talk about the next phases of what you've gone on to do because I feel like you've got all of these great framework ingredients around you to use and that you are using.
- 25:43Grab them with both hands and go for it.
- 25:45Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:45I've just got to use all my resources around me and I've just got to go do it now.
- 25:49So I think we're going to have a great year this year.
- 25:51I'm really looking forward to it.
- 25:53We're going to finish off the Formula Ford things and then just reassess and see where it all takes me.
- 25:57Go well.
