- 0:33SPEAKER_03: Thanks.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: Thanks for having me.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, I'm excited to talk about my favorite topic of all time.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Well, how are you doing today?
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: Good.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, good.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: Apart from the tube strikes.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, I've got a couple of gigs tonight and I'm like studying.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, but I haven't like gigged all week, so I'm like gonna brave the tube strikes and just pretend it's not happening.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, probably gonna be on public transport for like three hours tonight.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I heard even yesterday people were on like buses for an hour and a half, and I was like, how is that possible when like there wasn't even a strike yesterday?
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't understand.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: I've heard it's like rolling over in tomorrow into tomorrow as well, but like not the actual tube strike, just like the knock-on effects, which I don't really get how that works because yeah, because it closes overnight, so I don't really don't understand it.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: Maybe it's like more people are traveling on those days because they're not traveling today.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: You work from home usually, or do you like have you been working from home usually or do you uh work at in the office?
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: Um I often work from home, but it's like I'm meant to go in like once a week.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: But I really am very full of excuses.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: So I mean you have an excuse today, yeah.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, I think I am actually gonna be going in this afternoon.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah.
- 2:07SPEAKER_04: Fun.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's I mean, I live really central, so like I really don't have much of an excuse.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: Uh like, yeah, it's actually very close to me, so that's good.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: I think the furthest I can get is because I live just north of London.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: So I think the first I can get is like Highbury in Islam or like Moorgate or somewhere like around there, and then from there I just have to I'd have to get a bus from somewhere.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: I didn't know that you weren't in London.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: I mean like I'm just outside, literally on the border, so like it's very close.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: So when I say like, yeah, it's literally like one stop away, and I'm in London.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: Is it like how is it like one of those places that it's like people argue about whether it's London or not?
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Yes, basically.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So you've come on here to talk about the movie Pearl Harbor.
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: Yes, a very easy choice for me as well.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: I mean, as soon as you said it, I was as as soon as you asked me, I was like, Pearl Harbor.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: But so you knew you knew it wasn't gonna be well reviewed.
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: Well, no, because I was like, what I would want to do is Pearl Harbor, but I was expecting for it to like be so well loved I wouldn't be able to.
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: Um interesting.
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I it like kind of saddens me that it's not as well loved as what I thought.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: And it's it's really not well loved at all.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: No, it's 24%.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: I can't believe that.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, it made me watch it in like a totally different light.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Interesting, yeah.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: Um, but I've like I tried to like look into like why people don't like it, and the reasons are just so lame.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: Like um, it's like historically inaccurate.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: There's like loads of people are annoyed about the fact that they're like smoking Marlborough.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, I didn't even notice that.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because it's like they weren't invented yet.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And like, yeah, that's fine.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, stupid reason.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: Um like I thought that it would be like the racism or something, yeah.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: Um but it's like the really like small historical inaccuracies.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: So I just I feel like that's kind of telling of like the whole film kind of like it explains everything, which is that it's a really good film, but the problem is that it's like it's a rom-com, like there's like a lot of comedy in it, isn't there?
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: And like I don't know if there I couldn't I can't tell you a single bit of comedy in it.
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: I don't think I thought that was loads of there's like loads of like comedic characters, like red.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Which one's red?
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: Is that the one that like snorts when he talks?
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Was that supposed to be funny?
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: I think so.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: I thought there's like loads of like slapstick stuff, like you know, when they're like injecting the soldiers on the bum.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: The problem is is that like that just doesn't marry with a war film.
- 5:18SPEAKER_03: Also, it's so it's three hours long, yeah, so long, it's so long, and it's just like it's totally wrong for a war film.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: Like and I think that's why people hate it.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: But actually, if you just like look beyond the fact that it's a war film, it's incredibly enjoyable.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Well, the thing that people describe it as, which I do agree with, is it's Michael Bay trying to make Titanic, but like a war version of it, yeah.
- 5:47SPEAKER_03: Um can I just say better than Titanic?
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: I I'm not a huge Titanic fan, and I'd still say Titanic is better.
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Well, I'll start off by saying I I really didn't like this movie.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: Because it was the first time that you watched it.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: It was the first time, yeah.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Uh um, sorry.
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: Okay, tell me.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Well, so what I was saying, so we did we did run into each other last week, and I said to you that I'd seen the first hour of it at that point.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: And I got and then I came back, I I watched the rest of it yesterday, and it was so boring.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: Well, you did leave a week, yeah.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: You left a week between the first hour and the last two hours, which is like the whole thing, you have to be completely invested in the romance.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: So I would say that was your first mistake.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, I just found the whole thing that the the whole movie is really slow and boring, and for anyone not who anyone who can't see the video, Sarah is so angry at Richard.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: I'm just shocked.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: Like genuinely, it's like it's like I'm in like an alternate reality where people don't like Pearl Harbor.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: I mean the one thing, and this is I can't believe I'm saying this.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: The one thing that I thought was good was the action.
- 7:18unknown: Yeah.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Like that 40-minute action scene in the middle of the movie is maybe the only good bit in it.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: But wow, even then, I don't I don't care enough.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: I felt I felt like I don't care and I didn't care enough about it.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: Okay, do you know what I found out is that that the Pearl Harbor itself as a film will cost more than the damage to the actual Pearl Harbor from that attack.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: And I feel like you can really like feel that in that 40-minute action scene where like it's genuinely like they invested more, like as much into that as like into the real Pearl Harbor.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like that's mental.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: But I saw that it cost 140.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Was it 140 million before was that like altogether, or was that before it even got made that they gave them 140?
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: I can't even say no, but I mean I think a good investment personally.
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: Um also, you know, it's the only film ever to be like Oscar nominated and nominated for like worst film as well.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: In like there's no other film that's been really yeah.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, interesting.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: And I do feel like the Oscars thing is definitely like it is so patriotic, so it does feel quite biased.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Well, I only got one Oscar nomination, that was a sound.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Oh it did win.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: Incredible, so deserved.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: I didn't know it got any I didn't know it got like Razzie nominations, so yeah.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: I don't think I okay, I don't think it deserved Razzie nominations.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: I'll I will I will say that.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: I don't think it deserves that's kind I just got I don't think it was I don't know the acting I don't mind.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's badly directed as such.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: I don't like there are good act, there's good directing in it as much as I don't like Michael Bay.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: It's just boring.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: That's what that's what I felt.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: Hmm.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: Okay, so it's interesting that you say that because I did feel that when I watched it the other day.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: Um, but I was also like, you know, I'm watching this from like a scholarly perspective now.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: Like I was like taking notes.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: So I was like, of course it's gonna be like, you know, a little bit more boring than like the hundreds of times I've watched it before.
- 9:54SPEAKER_04: But how many times have you seen it?
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: Okay, so I don't know because when I was younger, I went to a girls' school firstly.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: I think that's like an important part of my story with Pearl Harbor.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: Um, I went to a girl's school and my friend Maddy, her her house was like next to the school.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: Okay, and we used to go every lunch break and watch a bit of Pearl Harbor every lunch break, a tub of MS mini bites, and like we genuinely had never met boys before, so like this was like what I thought of yourselves as the nurses, yeah, literally, and also so my mum's a nurse, and she met my dad not on the battlefield, but like in as his nurse, yeah.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: Um and so I was like, this is a very real depiction of romance to me.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, this makes so much sense now, yeah.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: And like, okay, also this is mad, but I genuinely didn't know that this was a part of the second world war.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: Like I thought that this was just a romance film and that they'd like created this war.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: This had you not heard of Pearl Harbour though, uh vaguely, probably.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just not never thought about it.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like it was just eclipsed by the romance, yeah.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: For me, so I just like didn't ever.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: I just like yeah, I guess I just this was just I was like watching this and learning.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: I was like learning how to be in a relationship from Pearl Harbor.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: Well, that this is not how to be in a relationship, no, absolutely not.
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: It really is.
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, I think like the relation aspect was always like the most interesting part to me, right?
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Um I can see that.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, there's so much moral ambiguity, like that is interesting, like that whole everything around surrounding those three is like well, I should we should clarify like for people who haven't seen it, like there the basic plot is that it's set during obviously Pearl Harbor, like the the war and everything that was going on with during that, but it's about like this guy, uh his name is Rafe, uh played by Ben Affleck and his best friend Danny, Josh Josh Hartner, and they they grew up together, they go to they go to like they enlist in the war, and uh they Ben Affleck meets uh Kate uh Kate what's her name?
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: Beckensale.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Beckinsale, yes, I got Kate Blanchett in my head.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Um Kate Beckinsel's character, yeah.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Kate Beckinsale's character, they fall in love.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: He goes to he gets sent to England to go fight, and they think he they think he's dead, basically.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: And and then she ends up falling in love with Danny.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and at that point, Ben Affleck comes back, yeah.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: So it's a lot of stuff to go do with that surrounding.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: And then Danny dies.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, he dies at the end.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, okay.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: Sorry, I I was like, and again, I was like not even waiting for you to be like, and then Pearl Harbor happens, like skip that bit.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: I was giving like the brief synopsis, like the mate, the the general idea of it, yeah.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, there's a there's a lot of moral ambiguity, like you said, like yeah, surrounding like do you fall in love again immediately after someone okay?
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: Well, they do make it really clear that three months has passed.
- 13:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: Um, like that's but also like that doesn't make any sense because like the like Japanese spies are already like very much preparing for for the for Pearl Harbor to happen tomorrow, and then they just go three months, and then you see her and her and Josh Hartnett start to fall in love.
- 14:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: So I think that there was like, you know, like that wasn't meant to be a three-month period, but that probably they were like, fuck, maybe it is actually a bit bad for her to just immediately fall in love with space, like let's just put in like a blank screen three months later, and then it will be fine.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Well, I also read that they shot 300 hours of footage, so there must be like stuff they cut out as well, but that are like that is like in that sort.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Maybe there is stuff that from that little three-month period that they cut out, yeah.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, probably, but 300 hours of footage that's so mad, yeah.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: But I mean it is a masterpiece, so expect nothing less.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, I I have some questions about the relationships though.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, yeah.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: Does she really fall in love with Josh Hartnett?
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: Because it feels like she doesn't.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: I don't feel like she does, yeah.
- 15:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: Like, even what she says, it's almost like out of duty of the fact that she's slept with him, yeah, and is pregnant.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: She's like, Well, you know, I should probably now stay with him.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: But yeah, he doesn't seem very convinced by being in love with him.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: No, he also doesn't like talk.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Well, I feel like they barely get to know each other.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: Well, again, 300 hours of footage, they probably cut some stuff out.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: But I would say that what I do think is cool is that about Bal Abbott, the least cool film ever, um, is that you know, Josh Hartner is like the ultimate beta male, and like you never see for like all of the racism and misogyny and like one-dimensional, yeah, every every character that isn't Ben Affleck is incredibly and maybe even Ben Affleck to be honest, like even from their like childhood, their only character trait is liking flying.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's so true, they don't have any other traits, do they?
- 16:30SPEAKER_03: No, but I would say that like they do wonders for beta males everywhere through Josh Hartlet.
- 16:37SPEAKER_03: Maybe that was the whole point of the film, just like representation for beta males.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: Well, now we know that what what kind of male you're into.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, actually, actually, no.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: Like, I yeah, I feel like maybe I'm supposed to be into Josh Hartner, but always Ben Affleck for me.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, they want you to be, they want you to be into Ben Affleck, I feel like that's probably why they did that with Josh Hartnett.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: I feel like they want to justify the like the final bit of like her ending up with Ben Affleck.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: I feel like they want to that to be clear, but I don't know.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Like that so is that the so that's the part that you obviously gravitate towards then, like you that's the storyline that you're most interested by.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: It's like the the three that the romance uh between the three of them.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: Um because that's another here's another thing about this, that's so many different storylines in this movie.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, too many.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: There's a too many.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: What do you say?
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: I wholeheartedly disagree, but please continue.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: There's a whole storyline with Cuba Gooding Jr.'s character.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: What is that?
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: With who?
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: See, you don't even remember Cuba Gooding Jr., the boxer navy guy that's like oh yeah.
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: Wait, I thought his name was D Doris.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: Dory.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: It probably is.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about the real guy.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, which I do think that that is actually an insult to the real life hero.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: To be like a side piece in that film.
- 18:20unknown: Yeah.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: I think they just they kind of just stuck him in there for the sake of like saying, Oh, yeah, we've got him in here as well.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Like he does nothing in this movie.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: No.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's I think they're like, that was them trying to be woke.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Michael Bates' version of woke is.
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: Um, and like, I mean, that guy, the real life guy, uh, like he should have an entire war movie to himself.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: Um, like when you read his story, and instead it's just like he has like one scene with where he's like in a boxing match, another scene where he's like uh kind of being negged by Kate Beckinsale.
- 19:07unknown: Yeah.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: Like you know, when she's like, I mean, why would you feel like you need to use your fists to get respect?
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: And then she like takes another blow, which I'm sure that this is just like his title, but to me it sounded really mean when she was like, Goodbye, petty officer.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: It's like, hey, he's just told you his whole life story, and you still feel the need to like hit him with the door on the way out by being like petty officer.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: It's it's sad for his character.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Like, think that and also like he has one more sit one scene at the end where he like shoots down a plane, and and then he gets uh he gets like awarded uh something he gets like a medal of honor or something at the end, doesn't he?
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: I think that's the only reason they show that.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: Well, I guess it's like them trying to be like African Americans weren't like allowed to fight.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: Um they do I think she does say that, like her she narrates that in the end, doesn't she?
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I definitely didn't understand that when I was younger.
- 20:26SPEAKER_03: I was like, why is he a cook?
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: He's so good at fighting.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: Um, which I think is kind of the whole point of showing him in that boxing match.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, I do find it really sad when you know the guy that he boxes against who like gets trapped.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: That's really sad.
- 20:48SPEAKER_03: That's horrible.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: His watching his death.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: That's an awful scene.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: Like the the war scenes are like for for as much as they're like still a 12A or whatever, like it's still pretty graphic.
- 21:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: I was quite quite surprised because one of the complaints I did read was like people saying, Oh, it's not realistic enough or whatever.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: I it's not like far off.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I think those people are like really nerds.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: Um like it's never I I read that like it contains 177 mistakes, and like um loads of them are like what does it say?
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: Um, oh, okay, this.
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: Okay, this isn't like really about the war thing, but like this is why in an article someone said that they didn't like the film.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: It's because um, you know, like that scene where he asks Kate Beck and Sale out when he's like got injected and he's like um dizzy and he says, I really lick you instead of I really like you.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: So someone wrote like um Evelyn giggles.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: As if it's sexy, not a realistic reaction.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: In the 1940s, to lick someone meant to beat them up.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: Like, sorry, that's ridiculous.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: Come on.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like, okay, so every film now that we watch has to be like completely true to the like you'd have to have like a dictionary from that time.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: And also, she might like she knows he's like dizzy and like not saying it.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: She could still find that funny.
- 22:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it is cute.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: And also another example of the slapstick humour that I was talking about.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: I still think that well, it's all in that like one place that you're talking about.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: No, there's also the bit where he like pops the champagne bottle into his nose.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: And there's also like a few characters who do seem to be there for like light comic relief.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: Like Michael Shannon is there for quite relief.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Um the uh he plays yeah, I'm trying to find his name in it.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: I'm really bad at like character names.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: So he is where is his name on the list?
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: I can't even find him on here.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Goose.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: That's who I was thinking of.
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: Like, you know how he um when they're like talking about whether Josh Hartnett should go out with Kate Beckinsale, yeah, um, and he goes, I once had a girlfriend, and like that's it.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like that cracks me up so much.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: I think he's my favorite character, isn't it?
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: Because he's like doing the most with nothing.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, he I think he's great.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, and also like how dorky Josh Hartnett is.
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: Like that's quite funny, like when he like brings her the handkerchief.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Um but I one thing I think think is very funny is like how Josh Hartnett and Ben Affleck are supposed to be the same age.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: And like they do not look, they do not seem the same age at all to me.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: Josh Hartnett does look extremely young.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: I think they're supposed to be like early 20s or something, and Ben Affleck looks like at least 10 years older.
- 24:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but yeah, I'm worried about myself how much I fancied Ben Affleck in that film.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: Like why because Ben Affleck is there is something a bit gross about Ben Affleck.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it's like in retrospect, it's probably in retrospect, yeah.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because he does say some really rogue things, but like Josh Hartnett is just so much better in every way.
- 24:51SPEAKER_03: Um I also just love like um I just was like thinking that like Josh Hartnett should be who like tells everyone when someone dies.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: Like it's like the worst moment ever, but like Josh Hartnett's telling you just be kind of just be a prerequisite to like any moment of grief.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: I think you just love Josh Hartnett now.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: Oh, he's so handsome though, isn't he?
- 25:22SPEAKER_03: I feel so old saying that with my curlers in.
- 25:25SPEAKER_03: Such a handsome boy, but he really is.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, you've revealed the curlers now, you can't go back.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I'm happy to reveal them.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: Um Sarah is wearing hair curlers.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: I've got a very rogue fringe.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: Um, but I'm like desperately trying to grow out.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: So I have to wear these all day.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: All day.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just until I'm like still you gotta go out tonight.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, until my gigs later.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Um yeah.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: But what where do you stand on the moral ambiguity of the like her going out with his best friend?
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: Because I kind of do find it weird how I just find it like a strange choice in the writing.
- 26:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: How they don't have like anyone of either either Josh Hartnett or Kate Beckinsale's friends who were like, um, you know, maybe not.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: Everyone's so on board, everyone's like, fuck Rafe.
- 26:27SPEAKER_03: You two should be together.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: What would you have if that were if you were one of the friends, would you have been like, maybe don't do that?
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Or would you have been like, no, go out with him?
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: I would be like, well, I mean, it's it is Josh Hartner, so yeah, I guess.
- 26:47SPEAKER_03: But also, like, I don't know.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: You would have been like, don't go out with him, because I'm gonna go out with him.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I would be like, absolutely not.
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: That's another moral question that we need to speak about here.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: But I suppose that, like, I I I mean, yeah, it is fine.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: Obviously, like they they think he's dead, yeah.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: But I would be like, Yeah, move on, but also like that's like the first person that you're gonna date is his best friend.
- 27:13SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, start swiping, get on hinged, like see if there are any other options.
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: Like, you're in Pearl Harbor where apparently everyone is a hot young soldier.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: Like that's the other thing, find someone else.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say maybe weight of it, but then also like the fact that you just pointed out that they are in Pearl Harbor during a war, like maybe they don't have yeah, maybe they're just in panic.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: That's true, but they don't seem none of them seem very panicked for a really long time.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: Like, I know that you enjoyed the war stuff, but like from it was more interesting.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was just in more interesting to me.
- 27:52SPEAKER_03: Because from my perspective, as someone who was like, you know, very heavily involved in the love story.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: I was like, Oh, can we like the war is so annoying?
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Like, I found it just it's too long, I will say that.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's 40 minutes in the right in the stick, it's 40 minutes stuck right in the middle of the movie, and like and it just feels yeah, it's weird sticking it right there, and then like I do feel like that was them trying to win the Oscar though, yeah.
- 28:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like that whole thing.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: That's the Titanic sinking.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: That's them, that's their Titanic sinking, yeah.
- 28:34SPEAKER_03: Um but I just yeah, I am just like shocked that people hate it so much.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: I don't like necessarily hate it, I just think it's really boring.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: And I don't know like if I try let me look at what people are saying.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: They're they're like they're just saying it's like hollow, it's it reduces one of America's biggest tragedies into a series of Kodak moments.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Uh there's no authentic humanity in it.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: Bloated and boring, full of cliche war movies uh stuff.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Which is fair.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: I feel like every war movie is a bit cliched though, isn't it?
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:26SPEAKER_03: Like it is extremely patriotic.
- 29:29SPEAKER_03: I think like one of the first lines ridiculous.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, one of the first lines in the film is like baby Wraith and baby Danny playing with the plane, and they go like land of the free, and then one of them goes like home of the brave, and it's like, what kid is doing that?
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I wrote down like four lines in four, like my fourth note in is this is so overly patriotic.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: So it's probably that moment.
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: Also, like we need to talk about um Alec Baldwin's character because he's just America, like that character is just like America personified.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: He's the worst character in it.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 30:09SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, I hate him.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: Um and also, like, he was in the movie I was talking about last week, Cat in the Hat.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: He was in that, and he was the worst thing in that as well.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: It's like it's very consistent.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: He's always playing the same person, right?
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh it's always something off about it.
- 30:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um I actually read that that's a real character.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Of course it is.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: Him, yeah, who's like, but it's always like he's he's meant to be like the angel on their shoulder.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: Like anytime they're like doubting whether they should like, you know, do a suicide mission or like um what should I do?
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: Like, should I, you know, go and bomb all of these civilians in Japan?
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: And he's like, Well, you know, I would.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: It's like oh yeah, there's that one, there's the one scene like near the end where literally, like what you're saying there, he's like, he's like, um, they're like, what would you do if uh the planes were gonna crash or whatever?
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: What if we do if we lost our we lost our fuel or whatever?
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: And he's like, you know what I would do?
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: I would like I would go head nosedive straight into all the all of them, and I would kill the Japanese, I'd kill as many as I could.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: And I was like, oh, this is awful.
- 31:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, it is, and like oh, I didn't know that their mission, because the mission, sorry, but it's so random the mission that they go on after Pearl Harbor.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: Like I thought initially that like the reason why they showed it as like because they're very much showing that like they're the underdogs with that mission, aren't they?
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: Like, there's only 16 planes, and like um, you know, like we're like poor us, like, look at us, we're so um courageous.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: But and I was like, maybe they've done this because like it's like nuclear war, yeah, which is really what happened, isn't as romantic as like sacrificing yourself um as like one of only 16 planes, but apparently it was actually like a real mission, yeah.
- 32:19SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, I didn't know that.
- 32:21SPEAKER_03: And the whole point of the mission was to show that they could reach Japan by plane.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: It's like, what?
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: What's the point?
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: Like they lost every single plane, yeah.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: And they were like, it really boosted American morale because it was like, look, we can hit back, and it's like, but what we can't, yeah.
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: It was a rubbish mission, yeah.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was the yeah, I guess it worked though.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: Apparently, but like, you know, all of it, I mean, also like just I feel like everyone in it is like very uh one-dimensional.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: But obviously, like all of the Japanese characters, it's like cartoons.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it like I there's things in it that apparently that apparently the Japanese people hated it.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: Um they said that like there's a scene where they're discussing uh they're discussing what they're gonna do, but they're discussing it outside, they're taking a meeting outside, and apparently that's really offensive to Japanese people.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: They do not take meetings outside.
- 33:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, all of everything in Japan is outside.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: It's like they live in a a field in like tents.
- 33:38SPEAKER_03: It's like it's so weird.
- 33:41SPEAKER_03: And they've got like chalkboards, whereas like the Americans have like really like up-to-date stuff, yeah.
- 33:47SPEAKER_03: Um, and they're like doing everything like with like they're moving the ships around with like origami.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like it's like this is not, and also like this is 1940, what is it, 1942, 1940 to like 1940.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just 1942.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: That's not it's it's not like the 1600s, yeah.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: It's so weird.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: I've and I feel like all of the Japanese characters have like no personality other than war.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: No, I don't know anything about any of those characters, no, nothing other than they're just like what they're discussing about what they're going to do.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, like to be fair, like the British characters have like no personality other than beer, like drinking beer in like one scene and being a bit rugged.
- 34:40SPEAKER_03: I couldn't even remember the British characters, yeah, and like the women have no personality other than just like talking about men.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: Um I mean, I guess like they do, they are quite amazing in the hospital, but like still they're like just there for the men.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: They're there for the yeah, but like, yeah, their depiction of Japanese characters is like I'm gonna be honest, surprisingly, actually, when I was re-watching it, like less racist than I was expecting it to be.
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:15SPEAKER_03: Like they do at least, at the very least, show them being like, you know, I wish we didn't have to go to war.
- 35:23SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's still very shocking.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: I was just trying to look up what the writer has also written, and it does not surprise me.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: He wrote Braveheart.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: All right, and he wrote We Were Soldiers, and The Man in the Iron Mask.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: So maybe he has no personality other than war.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:51SPEAKER_03: Maybe that's his whole thing.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:55SPEAKER_03: Probably like oh, I was just gonna say, like, he probably like doesn't actually know any other character traits because he doesn't have any.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say he was he was nominated for uh an Oscar for Braveheart for his writing.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: I haven't actually seen Braveheart.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't like Braveheart, but like it's I just think it's funny.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: He's got nominated for an Oscar for his writing for Braveheart, and then two films later he's get uh for Pearl Harbor, he gets nominated for a Razzie for his writing.
- 36:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that is good.
- 36:32SPEAKER_03: Is what do you think's better, this or Braveheart?
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: Oh, they're both bad.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: Uh Braveheart I find really annoying.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: Like this this is not annoying to me.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: This is just kind of boring.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Um Brave, yeah, plus Brave Heart's got the whole Mel Gibson thing, so like is that so probably I'd rather watch this than Braveheart, I think.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:00unknown: Yeah.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: Also supposed to be right answer.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: Also supposed to be another historically accurate movie, but I feel like this writer very much uh uses historic history loosely.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, you got you cut you're not sure how many times you've seen this thing.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: No.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: Um before, so you watched it uh before this.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: You had you had a rewatch before this.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: When was the last time you'd seen it before that though?
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: Probably like I mean heavily when I was a teenager, probably like eight years ago or something.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: I thought you would have like watched it regularly.
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: No, so I am really bad at what like watching things again um because I hate like reliving the emotion of it, like it it gives me like the thought of like re-watching anything.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: I'm like, if it's like feels like PTSD.
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I can't go through that again.
- 38:05SPEAKER_03: But the only reason why I watched this so many times, and I probably like fast forward it to the all stuff, is literally because I was like, I'd I guess like romanticizing that three-way relationship.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: So you cut out the 40 minutes in the middle, and then you just go back to yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: That's why this doesn't feel that bad to you because it's it's only like a two and a half hour movie, then or two hours.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: It's like less than that.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:35SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, I I also like I know this isn't a therapy session, but I feel like watching this, rewatching this now was like kind of scary to me because I realized like how much it has informed the way that I like date men.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: I know it's so bad, isn't it?
- 39:00SPEAKER_03: Like so basically, like, um, you know how they uh like Rafe doesn't sleep with uh Kate Beckinsale, Evelyn, because he's like, I like you too much.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: And I feel like that's something that I thought was true.
- 39:20SPEAKER_03: Like that's like this is such a lie.
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: But I was like, you know, that's a sign when someone doesn't want to sleep with me, that means that they're in love with me.
- 39:32SPEAKER_03: Like basically everyone who's ever rejected me, I'm like, I guess they're just really in love with me.
- 39:38SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: Um, I know, and also like oh, it really normalizes like tricking women into having sex with you.
- 39:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: Like in that scene where they're all in New York, they're like, um, you know, he's like got the like one of the soldiers has like the fake tears, yeah.
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: And then, and that's like a funny thing that he's like, yeah.
- 40:06SPEAKER_03: And so like that kind of stuff I now think is like so bad, but I guess like you think it's like kind of normal.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: So when you thought someone cry someone crying, you're like, oh yeah, that's like yeah, or just like yeah, I don't know.
- 40:23SPEAKER_03: I guess it just like you don't think that like because it is all like coercion, isn't it?
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's awful, yeah.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: But like I guess at the I guess it's like extremely normalized because it's that's like funny stuff that yeah, it's supposed to be a joke, yeah.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: Um and also, yeah, I do feel like the idea of having like two friends who both really like you fighting over you.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: This film makes that feel like the most like validating thing ever.
- 41:00SPEAKER_03: Like and she's like so important because like she is the difference for them between like living and dying.
- 41:09SPEAKER_03: Like, she's like the last thing that any of them like remember seeing when they're like about to die.
- 41:16SPEAKER_03: So I think that that gave me like really unrealistic ideas of like how much people should fancy me.
- 41:24SPEAKER_03: And like that all of their friends should fancy me too, and like really very bad.
- 41:30SPEAKER_03: Um, but I feel like this film is where it all started for me, my toxic relationships.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, so since we're like a little bit rushed for time, let's kind of uh we'll talk about.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna like talk all the way through the film or whatever, but like let's talk about some stuff that uh we we haven't really talked about.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: So there's uh there's I want to talk about John Voigt as the president as uh FDR.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: Oh terrible acting, terrible acting, and so much, so many prosthetics as well on his face.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: He looks so you can't even recognize him, and then he's also wearing like the funniest thing I I read was that he's wearing duplicates of steel leg braces that FDR had to wear, and because of that, he was like bruised for weeks after finishing filming.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: Oh dear, good like character.
- 42:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, what's the word when you like act in like method acting?
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: Yes, I guess like I guess kind of, but like at the same time, I don't I don't remember him wearing, I don't remember him walking even.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: So no, do you know that bit where he stands up where he's like, oh okay, so you know I don't remember it.
- 42:54SPEAKER_03: Okay, so there's a meeting just after Pearl Harbor where they're like, Are we really gonna invade Japan?
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: And he's like, um, don't ever tell me something isn't possible, and then he gets up from his wheelchair and like stumbles um to prove that nothing is impossible.
- 43:15SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 43:15SPEAKER_03: Um but I was like googling, like, did that really happen?
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: Because like that's quite a huge thing to claim that a president did.
- 43:26SPEAKER_03: Like he defied his like medical diagnosis to like prove a point about the war.
- 43:34SPEAKER_03: Um, but I don't think that it did really happen.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: So again, there's no way that happened.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: A lot of poetic license in this film.
- 43:42SPEAKER_00: Uh I also want to say that Ben Affleck's grandfather declined to see the film because he didn't want to relive the war.
- 43:48SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, I had that as well.
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: And I feel like he I don't feel like it was that was the reason.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: I feel like he just thought this looks shit.
- 43:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Fair enough.
- 44:01SPEAKER_03: I do think that the most unrealistic thing about the film for me is, you know, at the beginning, where Evelyn is on the train with her friends and they're going to New York.
- 44:14SPEAKER_03: And they've like, she's met Rafe and they've like fallen in love in that month before this train journey.
- 44:20SPEAKER_03: And she's like telling her friends about it for the first time.
- 44:24SPEAKER_03: Like, no way.
- 44:26SPEAKER_03: Like, there is no way that like you'd you've like had this whirlwind romance with a and all they do, they all they do is work together non-stop as well.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: There's no way.
- 44:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and they live together.
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: And like, sorry, but like you would your friends would know his like co-star rising sign exactly on the second date, like as if um, yeah, like no one talks about that.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: Everyone's like, they're smoking Marlborough cigarettes.
- 44:54SPEAKER_03: It's like this is a completely unrealistic portrayal of female friendships.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you what is realistic though, the bit where they go, has he got any friends for us?
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: And it's like everyone, and then they're just like the lineup of the guy just standing there, like, oh yeah, and also that Red is going out with like Jamie King.
- 45:16SPEAKER_03: That's crazy to me.
- 45:18SPEAKER_03: That's but also Yeah, that's not you know it says she says at one point, like, you know, he proposes, and she was like, She's like, We're gonna wait two years until I'm 19.
- 45:27SPEAKER_03: Oh, I know.
- 45:28SPEAKER_03: So it's like what?
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:31SPEAKER_03: It's like, okay, Red superv.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, how yeah, because he would have been like, what, 25?
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 45:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: Ugh.
- 45:39SPEAKER_03: Ugh, gross.
- 45:40SPEAKER_03: And they're just like, that's like totally fine and normal in this film.
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: It's just very Michael Bay.
- 45:48SPEAKER_03: I don't know how many Michael Bay films you've seen, but like it's I don't know how many I I've seen uh Armageddon.
- 45:57SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's the only one I do like of his no, that's not true.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: I do like a couple of them.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: I like Armageddon and I like um like the bad boys movies as well.
- 46:05SPEAKER_03: I've never seen them.
- 46:06SPEAKER_03: I've never seen um any of the Transformers either.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: Those those are probably like the worst ones.
- 46:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, he did The Quiet Place.
- 46:16SPEAKER_00: No, he just like produced it, I think.
- 46:18SPEAKER_03: Oh right.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that doesn't I I wouldn't count that as him.
- 46:21SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: Uh what else?
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: Pain and Ga.
- 46:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:26SPEAKER_00: They're not the island, they're not good movies.
- 46:30SPEAKER_03: He likes drama though, doesn't he?
- 46:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and he likes overly long movies.
- 46:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: They're all real like ridiculously long.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: He's not good at direct, he's not good at like with any like kind of female representation.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: They don't really like have they're there to be like gawked at, basically.
- 46:51SPEAKER_03: But I do think that I do think that, but also uh Kate Beckinsale's character, Evelyn, she is quite spunky.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: Like, I guess.
- 47:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, I I hate that like when she's at the hospital and like everyone around her is dying, she like basically gets her lipstick and like is like writing with her lipstick on people's forehead, like how to treat them or like whether they're fatal.
- 47:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:19SPEAKER_03: And then she like takes off her tights, like her pantyhose, and she's like so basically like great, like stripping down to like save the men.
- 47:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but she is resourceful and she does always like she she calls them out.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: Like, she's like when Josh Hartnett comes with that handkerchief, um, she's like, Why would you bring me this?
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: Like, what are you thinking?
- 47:44SPEAKER_03: Like, she's not like just sweet.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: No, I guess, yeah.
- 47:50SPEAKER_00: Like they do get, yeah.
- 47:51SPEAKER_00: She's she's one, I will say she is one of the better written female characters in his movies, and that's saying something, yeah.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she's not great, but she's not yeah, she's not terrible.
- 48:13SPEAKER_03: That's the best you can hope for.
- 48:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a bit that that's the best you're gonna get with one of his movies.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: But I uh I've just read just now as well that Michael Bay became frustrated with Josh Hartnett's serious approach to acting, so that he he got uh when he caught him smiling on film, he said send that to ILM and tell them to copy and paste it.
- 48:35SPEAKER_00: He just wanted him to smile.
- 48:37SPEAKER_03: I do think um Josh Hartnett's acting is really bad in this.
- 48:42SPEAKER_00: He's not a very good actor.
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: No, he's so pretty that it's fine, but it is like it is quite bad.
- 48:51SPEAKER_03: Um, but you can see that, like, because um Rafe gets so much more screen time.
- 48:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I feel like they did cut a lot of like but that's what I mean.
- 49:03SPEAKER_00: I don't feel like they gave him a lot to do.
- 49:05SPEAKER_00: No, his whole character is just like kind of pathetic, he's there to like serve the other two, yeah.
- 49:14SPEAKER_00: Their love story, essentially.
- 49:15SPEAKER_00: Like he's there as like a B plot.
- 49:18SPEAKER_00: Um also Ashton Kutcher lost the role of of Danny to Josh Hartnett.
- 49:24SPEAKER_00: Good fair enough, not an Ashton Kutcher fan.
- 49:29SPEAKER_03: I just think like compared to Josh Hartnett, who's also like because it's Ashton Kutcher, like there's something a bit problematic about him, isn't there?
- 49:41SPEAKER_03: Um or am I making that up?
- 49:43SPEAKER_03: Am I thinking of Ben Affleck?
- 49:46SPEAKER_00: I mean there I remember he did like one advert where he like did brown face for it.
- 49:52SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: Well, I feel like you know, he's probably he's he's almost like Josh Hartner is like personality-less and like very unproblematic, yeah, and like I guess in direct contrast to like Ben Affleck's character, who's like meant to be like extremely macho.
- 50:14SPEAKER_03: And I do feel like Ashton Kutcher probably is a little bit too much.
- 50:19SPEAKER_00: He would especially at this point, he would have been way too broad, I feel like.
- 50:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 50:25SPEAKER_03: Like I can see him playing Ben Affleck's character more than I can.
- 50:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, interesting.
- 50:31SPEAKER_03: Josh Hartnett's.
- 50:33SPEAKER_00: I can see him playing like one of the other characters.
- 50:36SPEAKER_03: Hmm.
- 50:37SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, not those two, I don't think.
- 50:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 50:42SPEAKER_00: Also, the producers wanted alongside Ben Affleck, they wanted Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow as the three leads.
- 50:49SPEAKER_03: Oh no, absolutely not.
- 50:53SPEAKER_03: I do think I think the casting is perfect.
- 50:56SPEAKER_03: If there's one thing that they got right, I will say it is the casting of this film.
- 51:01SPEAKER_00: I like I like I think Ben Affleck and Kate Beckinsale are really good casting.
- 51:09SPEAKER_00: Actually, Josh Hartnett, yeah.
- 51:10SPEAKER_00: I can't even really argue with Josh Hartnett here as well.
- 51:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: All right, okay, I'll agree with you there.
- 51:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, thank you.
- 51:18SPEAKER_03: I do think I do think some of the like um supporting actresses are random, though.
- 51:25SPEAKER_03: Like Jennifer Garner, yeah.
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: Future wife of future ex-wife of uh Ben Affleck.
- 51:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, also I wonder if do you know if they met on that film?
- 51:36SPEAKER_00: It would have been, yeah, they must have met on this film because then they did uh Daredevil two years after this, right?
- 51:45SPEAKER_00: I am a bit like which I thought they I thought that's where they met, to be honest, but no, must have been here, yeah.
- 51:52SPEAKER_03: But like she's like a main actress, and she's she got like four lines in this film, and all of them are just her being nervous.
- 51:59SPEAKER_00: Was she big at this time?
- 52:02SPEAKER_03: At this point, perhaps not.
- 52:04SPEAKER_03: I feel like this was post-13 going on 30, though.
- 52:08SPEAKER_00: No, this was pre-13 going on 30.
- 52:09SPEAKER_03: Oh, right.
- 52:10SPEAKER_03: So this wasn't her breakthrough.
- 52:12SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, she was not big at this time, just looking at her like what she was in.
- 52:19SPEAKER_03: With Kate Beckard's sale, though, I do I understand like professional boundaries, but if she didn't have a romance with either Josh Hartnett or Ben Affleck from this film, that is big loser alert.
- 52:37SPEAKER_03: Like, what why?
- 52:41SPEAKER_03: Like, I I just there's so much chemistry in this film between the three of them, even Ben and Josh when he's dying in his arms.
- 52:53SPEAKER_03: Like, if none of them slept together, I'm extremely disappointed.
- 52:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, that is the plot of the movie.
- 53:02SPEAKER_03: I know, but that's something else that I will say about this film.
- 53:06SPEAKER_03: I've never seen better chemistry ever.
- 53:08SPEAKER_03: Name me a film with better better chemistry.
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, any rom-com.
- 53:15SPEAKER_03: Go on, name one.
- 53:16SPEAKER_00: Uh when Harry met Sally.
- 53:18SPEAKER_03: No, absolutely not.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: 13 going on 30.
- 53:23SPEAKER_03: No way.
- 53:25SPEAKER_03: No way.
- 53:26SPEAKER_03: This is like when she's in the plane with Josh Hartnett, is your heart not just out of your chest?
- 53:34SPEAKER_03: No.
- 53:35SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 53:36SPEAKER_03: I get like I get so so many feelings watching this film.
- 53:41SPEAKER_03: Like, even at the end, I think maybe it's like the music, like at the end when like the child's in the plane with Ben Affleck.
- 53:49SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, so emotional.
- 53:53SPEAKER_00: Okay, we need to talk about that as well.
- 53:55SPEAKER_00: The child, it's Josh Hartnett's kid.
- 53:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 53:59SPEAKER_00: And he because he dies, he tells Ben Affleck to raise it as uh raise the child as his own.
- 54:05SPEAKER_03: Does he even say that?
- 54:07SPEAKER_03: Does I feel like he doesn't have enough time when he's dying?
- 54:10SPEAKER_03: Well, it's oh yeah, he says, No, you know, you're a father.
- 54:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're it says you're the yeah, you're the father.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: Incredible love, not a father.
- 54:20SPEAKER_03: It's quite a burden, isn't it?
- 54:22SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, I had sex with your for the love of your life.
- 54:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and now my dying wish is like you raise it.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: And now you've got to look at that.
- 54:34SPEAKER_03: The villain of this film, the villain of this film is Josh Hartner.
- 54:38SPEAKER_03: Surprising villain.
- 54:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:43SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah.
- 54:46SPEAKER_03: I I also I don't know if you feel this with the children actors, but they've like tried too hard to make them exact replicas of their parents, yeah.
- 54:55SPEAKER_03: Um or their like older selves.
- 54:58SPEAKER_03: Like that child looks so much like Josh Hartnett.
- 55:01SPEAKER_00: He does, yeah.
- 55:02SPEAKER_03: It's really weird.
- 55:04SPEAKER_03: It's like Sim.
- 55:05SPEAKER_03: It's like Sim version of Josh Hartnett.
- 55:09SPEAKER_03: Like they've just put it in child form.
- 55:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's very weird.
- 55:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:14SPEAKER_03: And the same with them at the beginning.
- 55:16SPEAKER_00: It's like I hated those kids at the beginning.
- 55:21SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 55:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like I also the fact that they're just like in the plane flying it, like a grip.
- 55:33SPEAKER_00: As if I mean that dad's that's that dad's fault for leaving the keys in there.
- 55:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:41SPEAKER_03: Also, I didn't get their relationship with their parents, like their NAFLEC, Wraith's dad, is meant to be like very traumatized from World War One and kind of horrible.
- 55:57SPEAKER_03: And then Josh Hartnett his dad is randomly like leaves him with a plane at the beginning, but then doesn't come into it throughout the whole rest of the film.
- 56:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 56:13SPEAKER_00: I I think it's literally just to showcase their love of planes.
- 56:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 56:20SPEAKER_03: Which they could have done so many other ways.
- 56:22SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 56:27SPEAKER_00: Do you want to know something funny about this as well?
- 56:29SPEAKER_04: What?
- 56:30SPEAKER_00: The after party, after the after premiere party for the film is said to have cost more than the whole production of Billy Elliott.
- 56:39SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 56:40SPEAKER_03: That's amazing.
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: God, I would have loved to be at that party.
- 56:46SPEAKER_03: I would have done it.
- 56:47SPEAKER_00: What a party that would have been.
- 56:49SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, yeah.
- 56:51SPEAKER_03: Would have been so good.
- 56:53SPEAKER_00: You just wanted to, you just want to meet Josh Hartnett.
- 56:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 56:57SPEAKER_03: I wonder who would be cast in those roles now.
- 57:00SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 57:02SPEAKER_00: Who would you cast?
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: Uh see.
- 57:07SPEAKER_03: I feel like Emma What Emma Watson could be uh Emma Watson, interesting.
- 57:12SPEAKER_03: Could be good for Kate Beck and Sale.
- 57:15SPEAKER_00: I can see I guess I can see that.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: I feel like you've got to have Harry Styles in there.
- 57:21SPEAKER_00: Ugh.
- 57:22SPEAKER_03: What?
- 57:23SPEAKER_03: You don't like Harry Styles?
- 57:24SPEAKER_00: Not as an actor.
- 57:26SPEAKER_03: Oh, I think he's like Josh Hartner, like just chuck him in, it's fine.
- 57:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he would actually, you know what?
- 57:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he would sue that Josh Hartner role because it's not really anything to do there.
- 57:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's not heavy on the acting.
- 57:39SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so we got Emma Watson and Harry Styles.
- 57:46SPEAKER_03: Who was here's another because I'm such a fan girl, I'd probably put like Pete Davidson.
- 57:53unknown: Oh god.
- 57:56SPEAKER_00: No, Pete Davidson is the Michael Shannon role.
- 57:59SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, like the yeah, you're so right.
- 58:02SPEAKER_03: I had a girlfriend.
- 58:05SPEAKER_03: Only just like there, just get blown up and be funny.
- 58:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: Um, I can't think of any actors, weirdly.
- 58:13SPEAKER_00: No, I can't think of anyone.
- 58:15SPEAKER_03: Who's like a young young actor?
- 58:21SPEAKER_00: Um I can't think of anyone now.
- 58:26SPEAKER_03: No, me either.
- 58:28SPEAKER_04: Um Holland.
- 58:36SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, no, he's Timothy Shadow.
- 58:42SPEAKER_03: Maybe.
- 58:44SPEAKER_00: I think he's too small.
- 58:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:47SPEAKER_00: Ooh, like a Liam Hemsworth, maybe.
- 58:51SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, I could see him as that.
- 58:53SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, some of these people would not.
- 58:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, some of these people are just too small.
- 59:00SPEAKER_03: I feel like there isn't a market for a Ben Affleck these days.
- 59:04SPEAKER_00: No, it's not.
- 59:05SPEAKER_00: It's like kind of that kind of person is like disappeared from access.
- 59:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 59:11SPEAKER_03: Like, I mean, this whole film is just obviously very dated, but that whole like all American, one-dimensional hero is like yeah, just doesn't exist.
- 59:25SPEAKER_03: How tragic.
- 59:26SPEAKER_00: I'm so glad it's gone.
- 59:28SPEAKER_00: Um, just because I know you've got a you're short on time.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: Like, are we um is there anything else you want to talk about within this?
- 59:35SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, let's move on to the final section.
- 59:37SPEAKER_03: No, final section is good for me.
- 59:39SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 59:40SPEAKER_00: Uh okay, so uh the final section is the reverse of this, which is uh, do you have a film that's uh bad well rated and reviewed and loved by people and critics that you think is actually a bad movie?
- 59:53SPEAKER_03: Um, yes.
- 59:54SPEAKER_03: What's that film that just came out with The Girl from Haim?
- 59:58SPEAKER_00: Oh, Licorice Pizza.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_03: Licorice Pizza, absolutely the worst film I've ever seen.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm the worst film you've ever seen.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_03: Ever.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_03: I do not understand at all why people like it.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_03: Like, it's really shocking to me.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_00: Um, it's got such a love hate, isn't it?
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_03: That film.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like people a lot of people love it, but there are people that really hate it.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_03: I only keep seeing people who love it, and I like do not understand.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_00: Majority of people love it.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_03: I did get stood up on a date to go and watch it, so I had to watch it with my sister, and I was really angry the whole time.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_00: But also, what a horrible date to see that.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_00: Like that was.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, what a great date!
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_03: I just thought there was like no story.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_03: Oh, it was like it also made me feel thick because I was like, you know, when you're watching something that everyone says is really good, so I was like, what am I missing?
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_03: I don't know if you see a theme here, but like I really have to see myself reflected in the film.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_00: I'm glad you don't see yourself reflected in that film.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that would be concerning.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_03: I just also like didn't really get any of the characters, and but yeah, it's like 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's very highly rated, and it's probably apparently like it's the favorite to win the screenplay this year at the Oscars.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_03: That will really piss me off.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_03: I was it's also like her journey of self-discovery.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_03: Like, is it like what does she discover?
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_00: She likes 15-year-olds, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_03: All of it.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_03: I feel like I've blocked it out.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_03: Um, so I can't I don't have that much to say about it.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_03: But I feel like people just like it because it like looks spiced.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, I haven't I haven't actually seen it yet, so I I still can't I can't comment fully on it, but like the stuff I've heard about really puts me off watching it as well.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_00: Like all the there's like the scene with like the uh with the Japanese person, isn't there?
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_00: That's like really offensive, and then like for no reason it's in there, yeah.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_00: And then there's like yeah, all that stuff with her and him just sounds creepy as well.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, all of it.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_03: And she's like, is it weird that I hang around with him and his friends?
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_03: It's like, yes, very weird.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_03: Like you are literally dating a 15-year-old boy.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_03: So weird, and like it is, and like isn't she like 25 as well?
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh he's 25, he's 15.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, just like I feel like it's like subverting the whole like mid-20s woman, um like finding herself and like going into adulthood in the sense that like she's going backwards into spending time with these teenagers and like reverting, but also like who cares?
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like that was I just wasn't interested in it at all.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_03: Um, but my mood on the day and you were in a bad mood, yeah.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fair enough.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_00: All right, well, uh, this has been great.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_00: I know I do want to make sure you get off on time, like get away on time.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_00: So, like, um uh how can we find you online?
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_00: And do you have anything you want to promote?
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_00: Also, this is going out literally in the next like I'm gonna edit it right now and immediately put this one out.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_03: So, like, if you have anything you want to promote for tonight, even um for tonight, not for tonight, I don't think, but um I've got a night on the 24th of March, which we're about to put out called Pussycat Lols.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_03: Oh, um, so get tickets to that.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_00: Clashing with my night and oh no, it's fine.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_00: It's fine.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_00: I'm not even borrowing mine, so it's fine.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, I don't know.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_03: Don't know what else.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_03: I guess find me online Sarah Roberts, lots of underscores, because there are about a hundred million of us.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_03: Um yeah.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_00: How many underscores?
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_03: Or is it just like just like three, but I would just say keep going until you find me.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_00: I'll tag you and everything so people can find you as well.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_03: Thanks.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_03: Thanks for having me.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thanks so much for coming on.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry that you hated the film so much.
