An expedition fleet attempts to establish contact with an industrialized planetary civilization, but their transmission lasers inadvertently ignite the planet’s highly reactive upper atmosphere. Believing they are under attack, the planet launches a massive volley of sub-light kinetic kill vehicles toward the fleet. The expedition's diplomat must convince the fleet admiral not to authorize a retaliatory glassing of the planet, trying to decipher a way to surrender to a species they cannot even talk to.
