- 0:08Speaker 1: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 0:11Speaker 1: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 0:20Speaker 2: That's right.
- 0:21Speaker 3: You are tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show here on
- 0:24Speaker 3: ESPN 792.1 FM. Sean O'Connell not here today, though. He
- 0:30Speaker 3: is in Chicago calling some PFL fights. So you got me,
- 0:34Speaker 3: James Peterson, sitting in the air chair. 4OC today. Tyson
- 0:39Speaker 3: Whiting behind the glass producing the show today in my spot.
- 0:45Speaker 3: So got excited to do this with you. Got a
- 0:48Speaker 3: incredibly fun show lined up for you. We're going to
- 0:52Speaker 3: talk with Gordy Chiesa for an hour in studio. We
- 0:55Speaker 3: don't usually do that during football season, but we got
- 0:57Speaker 3: some extra time today. So we're going to do an
- 1:00Speaker 3: hour with Gordy in studio at 1130. Going until 1230.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Daily Dump, of course, at 1230, 1 o'clock. We will
- 1:10Speaker 3: replay Dishin' with Dev. This is usually the day that
- 1:14Speaker 3: we air Dishin' with Devin. As everyone knows, Thursdays at 1.
- 1:18Speaker 3: But because of some wonky schedules, it's fall break up
- 1:23Speaker 3: on the hill. And for most of the school districts
- 1:28Speaker 3: around here, public schools and whatnot, So Devin had to
- 1:32Speaker 3: do it live yesterday. So we're going to replay that
- 1:34Speaker 3: today instead of bringing it to you for the first time.
- 1:39Speaker 3: That's going to be at one o'clock and we've got
- 1:41Speaker 3: a Thursday night football preview for you. It's a Seahawks
- 1:46Speaker 3: road game. We are now your home of the Seahawks
- 1:49Speaker 3: here on Utah's number one sports talk. So we've got
- 1:52Speaker 3: that game for you. The Seahawks home radio call. That's
- 1:55Speaker 3: at 6 o'clock. They're playing the Broncos. You can hear
- 1:58Speaker 3: the home Broncos call also on Utah's ESPN radio network
- 2:03Speaker 3: over on the sister station, 103.9 and 98.3 ESPN, The Fan.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So you've got.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Both home calls you can choose from here on the
- 2:12Speaker 3: same network, here on the home of the Seahawks or
- 2:15Speaker 3: over on ESPN, The Fan, the home of the Broncos.
- 2:17Speaker 3: So that's exciting. We'll give you a preview of that today.
- 2:21Speaker 3: The Mammoth are in action. Tyson Whiting, the producer, you
- 2:25Speaker 3: guys know he was the longtime voice of the Grizzlies,
- 2:28Speaker 3: so he'll give us plenty of hockey knowledge. We'll break
- 2:33Speaker 3: that game down as well for you. They're taking on
- 2:35Speaker 3: the Oilers tonight. And, yeah, that's the show today. You
- 2:43Speaker 3: can always text in like OC likes to do. I
- 2:45Speaker 3: want to keep it going.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Text in 877-353-0700.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Any thoughts you have, Utah football thoughts, you're a Seahawks fan,
- 2:56Speaker 3: Broncos fan. They're both in action playing each other tonight,
- 2:59Speaker 3: of course, as I said. So bring those in for me.
- 3:03Speaker 3: If you're one of our BYU fans, we've got our
- 3:05Speaker 3: resident BYU fan, Darren, and then the other BYU fan
- 3:09Speaker 3: who listens to the show, as we affectionately call him.
- 3:13Speaker 3: We've got at least two of you out there. If
- 3:14Speaker 3: you've got thoughts on BYU Notre Dame, the celebrity guest
- 3:17Speaker 3: picker has been announced.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Tyson.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Tyson.
- 3:20Speaker 3: And Tyson, I know you are a BYU fan too.
- 3:26Speaker 3: So Steve Young, celebrity guest picker, feels like right on
- 3:30Speaker 3: the nose. But there's nothing wrong with bringing back the
- 3:34Speaker 3: program legend, maybe the most famous BYU football alum.
- 3:39Speaker 5: It felt like the obvious choice, although Steve Young doesn't
- 3:41Speaker 5: work for ESPN anymore, so there was a thought of
- 3:44Speaker 5: would Steve Young agree to do it. My thought was
- 3:47Speaker 5: maybe Fred Warner if the 49ers would let him out
- 3:50Speaker 5: of practice because San Francisco's got a Monday night.
- 3:52Speaker 6: Game on ESPN. So maybe a little promotion of that.
- 3:56Speaker 5: If it wasn't going to be a sports guy, I
- 3:57Speaker 5: was thinking maybe Benson Boone would have been a good choice.
- 4:00Speaker 5: But you can never go wrong with Hall of Famer
- 4:02Speaker 5: Steve Young.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Yeah, Benson Boone is a sneaky great guess by you.
- 4:08Speaker 3: If they were going to go local celebrity instead of...
- 4:13Speaker 3: Former BYU athlete, football player.
- 4:16Speaker 5: Seems like they like to go with musicians every now
- 4:18Speaker 5: and then, especially those country musicians on those SEC games.
- 4:21Speaker 5: And so I thought Benson Boone would have been a
- 4:22Speaker 5: good choice. But, you know, lefty Steve Young would certainly
- 4:25Speaker 5: be a great one is after all, you know, he's
- 4:27Speaker 5: a three time Super Bowl champion. And a two-time MVP,
- 4:31Speaker 5: and so you can never go wrong with Steve Young.
- 4:33Speaker 2: And I don't know, is Benson a BYU fan?
- 4:35Speaker 3: If he is, he'd probably say, Notre Dame, please don't
- 4:38Speaker 3: take the beautiful things I got, right?
- 4:39Speaker 2: He'd probably drop that line on them.
- 4:41Speaker 5: He dropped a few lines. He's got a few good
- 4:43Speaker 5: hits these days. I think he went to, like, BYU-Idaho,
- 4:46Speaker 5: did Benson Boone. Okay, so he might be a BYU fan.
- 4:50Speaker 3: He didn't go to BYU at Provo, but, you know,
- 4:53Speaker 3: maybe a BYU football fan.
- 4:54Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I had not even considered Benson Boone when you told
- 4:59Speaker 3: me pre-show that you were thinking that might be the
- 5:02Speaker 3: way to go. I'm like, oh man, that's a good
- 5:05Speaker 3: guess for a former football player. They go with Steve
- 5:09Speaker 3: Young instead. He was on McAfee talking about that just
- 5:14Speaker 3: a little bit ago.
- 5:14Speaker 5: I think that's when they actually broke the news that
- 5:16Speaker 5: he was going to be the celebrity guest picker on McAfee.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so too. It was around 10-15 or so.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Steve Young.
- 5:24Speaker 3: We were talking about this, too. He's doing like a
- 5:27Speaker 3: wet hair, slick back look now, I guess. I hadn't
- 5:30Speaker 3: seen that from him before.
- 5:31Speaker 5: He had kind of curly hair when he was a player,
- 5:33Speaker 5: and I think he's just happy he still has hair. Yeah,
- 5:36Speaker 5: so he's going with a different look, or at least
- 5:39Speaker 5: he did today on McAfee.
- 5:41Speaker 2: So that's interesting.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Exciting to have Steve Young back in Utah. He'll be
- 5:46Speaker 3: the celebrity guest picker on Saturday for game day ahead
- 5:50Speaker 3: of No. 8 BYU hosting No. 2.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Notre Dame.
- 5:53Speaker 3: We'll get into that game a little bit here in
- 5:55Speaker 3: the opening segment as well. But, of course, I want
- 5:58Speaker 3: to start out with Utah football. My question to you
- 6:03Speaker 3: guys out listening, the listeners, and Tyson, you can chime
- 6:07Speaker 3: in on this too, is what do you need to
- 6:09Speaker 3: see from Utah against Colorado on Saturday? And the reason
- 6:13Speaker 3: I ask that question is this kind of, even though
- 6:17Speaker 3: it's a conference game and obviously a power four opponent, Tyson,
- 6:22Speaker 3: it kind of feels like because Colorado seems to be
- 6:28Speaker 3: so vastly inferior to Utah on paper and the way
- 6:32Speaker 3: that obviously Utah has been able to execute 11 straight
- 6:37Speaker 3: 30 point games. The last one, by the way, that
- 6:41Speaker 3: they did not score 30, you know, which game that
- 6:43Speaker 3: was where a lot of you thought should have kicked
- 6:47Speaker 3: a couple more field goals, right? I'm with you guys
- 6:50Speaker 3: on that one. Um, The Holy war game was the
- 6:53Speaker 3: last one that Utah failed to score 30 points in.
- 6:57Speaker 3: It's been 11 straight since that game. Actually in a
- 7:03Speaker 3: couple of days, it's the one year anniversary of that game.
- 7:06Speaker 3: So about this time last year is the last time
- 7:09Speaker 3: Utah failed to score 30 points in a game. So
- 7:13Speaker 3: they're executing obviously way better than Colorado is undefeated. Colorado's not,
- 7:18Speaker 3: they got handful of losses here. They're just vastly inferior
- 7:22Speaker 3: to Utah, right, Tyson? So that's why I ask. It
- 7:26Speaker 3: almost sounds like a question that we ask when Utah's
- 7:31Speaker 3: playing or BYU's playing an FCS opponent before the Idaho game,
- 7:34Speaker 3: for BYU before the Utah Tech game, which feels disrespectful
- 7:39Speaker 3: to Colorado. It's in Boulder, for crying out loud. But also,
- 7:45Speaker 3: is that not the kind of game we're looking at
- 7:47Speaker 3: here where it's like, of course you want... You're looking
- 7:51Speaker 3: for Utah to win, ultimately. You're looking for them to
- 7:54Speaker 3: win big. Besides that, what specifically, 877-353-0700, are there some
- 8:02Speaker 3: bugaboos that you've seen Utah on the offense or defensive
- 8:06Speaker 3: end that you're like, I would like them to use
- 8:10Speaker 3: this game to get that right? Are there other specific
- 8:16Speaker 3: things you're looking for Utah to do against Colorado besides
- 8:19Speaker 3: the obvious, win the game and win big.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Tyson, what do you think about this one?
- 8:23Speaker 5: I think with Utah, they've had a lot of success
- 8:25Speaker 5: early in games, a lot of touchdowns in the first
- 8:27Speaker 5: drive of games. I think what you want to do
- 8:29Speaker 5: is you want the first two offensive possessions, just take
- 8:32Speaker 5: the ball, get it right down the field, and make
- 8:34Speaker 5: Colorado play catch up the whole game because Colorado has
- 8:37Speaker 5: really struggled on the offensive side of things. However, outside
- 8:40Speaker 5: of the Northwestern game and maybe the fourth quarter against
- 8:42Speaker 5: Texas Tech, Colorado's defense has actually not been that bad.
- 8:46Speaker 5: you know, their weakness a few years ago was the
- 8:48Speaker 5: defensive side of the ball. Colorado's actually built a pretty
- 8:51Speaker 5: decent defense. And so it's going to be big for
- 8:53Speaker 5: Utah to score early, make Colorado play catch up and
- 8:56Speaker 5: really see if he can rattle Isaac Wilson. The big
- 8:59Speaker 5: thing about this matchup is the Utah coaching staff knows
- 9:02Speaker 5: Isaac Wilson inside.
- 9:03Speaker 6: And out, and they know that they can rattle him
- 9:05Speaker 6: and get him flustered.
- 9:06Speaker 5: So get off to an early lead and then fluster
- 9:09Speaker 5: Isaac Wilson, forcing him to make some mistakes and see
- 9:12Speaker 5: if he can get Isaac Wilson pulled. And then, uh,
- 9:14Speaker 5: you know, get a big lead at halftime and just
- 9:16Speaker 5: kind of cruise from there.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:20Speaker 3: And the good news is for Utah, when it, in
- 9:24Speaker 3: that regard, it's just do what you've been doing. Score early,
- 9:28Speaker 3: score a lot early, right? They've already shown the ability
- 9:32Speaker 3: to do that this year. That's one of the things
- 9:34Speaker 3: that I agree with you is going to be key
- 9:37Speaker 3: in every game. And this game is no different, but
- 9:41Speaker 3: they've already shown that, Hey, We're already really good at
- 9:44Speaker 3: doing that. So I don't I don't think there's much
- 9:47Speaker 3: doubt that they'll be able to do that again, even
- 9:49Speaker 3: though you did say this is an improved defense for Colorado.
- 9:52Speaker 3: If there's a strength to this team, it is their defense.
- 9:55Speaker 3: But even saying that OC broke it down yesterday, they're
- 9:59Speaker 3: like middle. to kind of middle to, uh, kind of
- 10:05Speaker 3: behind in the pack in the Big 12. They're like
- 10:08Speaker 3: 9th or 10th in total defense. So even though it's improved,
- 10:11Speaker 3: it's not like this is a defense that can't be exploited.
- 10:14Speaker 5: They had a really bad game against Northwestern, although Northwestern,
- 10:17Speaker 5: as it's turned out, might be a decent team this year.
- 10:19Speaker 6: It looks like they're a well-improved club. It's true.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Colorado won with defense against Georgia Tech in the season
- 10:25Speaker 5: opener and for about three quarters looked like they were
- 10:27Speaker 5: right in there with Texas Tech, a team that's obviously
- 10:30Speaker 5: competing for the Big 12 championship. And so Colorado probably
- 10:34Speaker 5: has some hope that if they can play defense, get
- 10:36Speaker 5: some stops early, they can maybe build some confidence from there.
- 10:39Speaker 5: And that's why I think for Utah, it's important. Those
- 10:41Speaker 5: first two offensive drives, take the ball down the field
- 10:44Speaker 5: and see if you can make Colorado quit.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Yeah, get in the end zone. I like that point
- 10:50Speaker 2: by you.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Again, getting started early, scoring touchdowns early in your first
- 10:57Speaker 3: couple possessions, getting 14 to 21 points in the first quarter,
- 11:01Speaker 3: huge against Atlanta. any team Colorado, no different. The first
- 11:06Speaker 3: big 12 road game, by the way, that's where Utah
- 11:09Speaker 3: has been dominant this year. I mean, it seems like
- 11:11Speaker 3: the second big 12 road game, you get those.
- 11:13Speaker 5: Joined in progress games where the previous game runs late
- 11:16Speaker 5: and you know, they, they come, they come in, you know,
- 11:18Speaker 5: they come in hot there for the bride, the TV
- 11:20Speaker 5: broadcast and Utah has already.
- 11:21Speaker 6: Got seven or 14 points on the board.
- 11:23Speaker 2: It's true. It's true.
- 11:26Speaker 3: What I would, what I think is important for them
- 11:31Speaker 3: to do. And it, It's closely related to what you're saying, Tyson,
- 11:37Speaker 3: except to me, I'm almost like assuming that they're going
- 11:42Speaker 3: to get off to a hot start, so I'm not
- 11:45Speaker 3: feeling like that's something for me that needs to be
- 11:48Speaker 3: highlighted on its own. What it is for me is
- 11:52Speaker 3: staying consistent offensively throughout the game. If you're going to
- 11:57Speaker 3: have a whole third quarter which we've seen in that
- 12:01Speaker 3: quarter in particular this year being tough for Utah. Last
- 12:04Speaker 3: game against Kansas, it was the second quarter, the end
- 12:07Speaker 3: of the second quarter, that was like, whoa, there's a
- 12:09Speaker 3: lull here offensively. First time all season that that's kind
- 12:12Speaker 3: of happened in the first half for Utah. They've had
- 12:16Speaker 3: at least one of those per game where they go 7, 8, 10,
- 12:19Speaker 3: 12 minutes of offense They're just being stifled offensively.
- 12:25Speaker 2: And you've got to credit the opposing team's defenses.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Maybe they figured out something that is slowing down Utah.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Whatever the case may be, whether it's more Utah's fault
- 12:38Speaker 3: or the other team just playing really good defense for
- 12:40Speaker 3: stretches against this really good Utah offense, can't afford... maybe
- 12:46Speaker 3: you can afford to do it in this game, but
- 12:48Speaker 3: you can't afford to do it against next week against Houston,
- 12:51Speaker 3: probably certainly not against BYU, certainly not against those caliber
- 12:56Speaker 3: ranked opponents.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:58Speaker 3: So this, I would love for this game to be
- 13:00Speaker 3: an opportunity where they show that's the part.
- 13:05Speaker 2: One of the things we're going to get, right.
- 13:06Speaker 3: We are not going to have a long lull offensively
- 13:08Speaker 3: to where we get, you know, three, four possessions in
- 13:11Speaker 3: a row or three and out or a turnover and
- 13:14Speaker 3: three and outs.
- 13:15Speaker 5: Right.
- 13:16Speaker 3: Some consistency in that regard on the offensive end. I
- 13:21Speaker 3: think also defensively, it's been really good. Utah's defense has
- 13:26Speaker 3: been really good, especially the scoring defense, which is the
- 13:28Speaker 3: most important thing, right? Keep them out of the end zone.
- 13:30Speaker 3: But it's been a lot more bend but don't break.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I don't know if you agree with me on that, Tyson.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Maybe those– out there on the text line eight seven
- 13:39Speaker 3: seven three five three zero seven hundred to me it
- 13:41Speaker 3: seemed like instead of a dominant stifling defense it's been
- 13:45Speaker 3: more bend but don't break which is a little which
- 13:48Speaker 3: is is not what we're accustomed to from from a
- 13:51Speaker 3: morgan scali now colton swan um defense i'd like it
- 13:56Speaker 3: just to be a little bit more dominant not give
- 13:59Speaker 3: up so many last week it was passing yards right
- 14:03Speaker 3: not had that the run defense has been much more
- 14:05Speaker 3: improved it's especially compared to the end of last year.
- 14:10Speaker 2: But continue that.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Don't have some leaks in the run defense, which has
- 14:16Speaker 3: happened from time to time this year. Thankfully, for the
- 14:19Speaker 3: most part, they've been able to fix what ailed them
- 14:23Speaker 3: at the end of last season in that regard. But
- 14:25Speaker 3: that also means it's just been a little more leaky
- 14:29Speaker 3: on the pass defense. Not quite enough. They've actually gotten
- 14:34Speaker 3: a fair amount of total sacks and a fair amount
- 14:37Speaker 3: of interceptions Tyson, but what we haven't seen is like,
- 14:43Speaker 3: we obviously hadn't seen a pick six.
- 14:45Speaker 2: That streak is still in jeopardy. The 20, it would
- 14:47Speaker 2: be 23 years.
- 14:48Speaker 3: If they can, if they can make that happen this year,
- 14:51Speaker 3: still plenty of time to do that, but we're still
- 14:53Speaker 3: waiting for that first pick six, but also we haven't
- 14:57Speaker 3: even seen one really long interception return, let alone a
- 15:01Speaker 3: pick six Tyson. I just feels like the big plays
- 15:04Speaker 3: by the defense have been lacking in a little bit,
- 15:07Speaker 3: even though you look at the numbers and go, I mean,
- 15:10Speaker 3: total sacks, pretty good. None of them are coming from
- 15:13Speaker 3: the defensive ends though. It's been defensive tackles and linebackers.
- 15:17Speaker 5: It's almost like you're just trying to avoid the big
- 15:19Speaker 5: play on the, you know, giving up the big play.
- 15:21Speaker 5: And so you kind of play a little bit passive
- 15:23Speaker 5: and I'm not going to allow that 30 yard pass
- 15:25Speaker 5: down the field. So I'll let you get that five
- 15:27Speaker 5: or 10 yard pass in front of.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Me, which has been a winning formula for them so far.
- 15:31Speaker 3: And honestly, if you're going to play the whole, I
- 15:33Speaker 3: got to give up something. So, I'm going to make
- 15:37Speaker 3: sure I don't give up this. That's a good strategy, right?
- 15:40Speaker 3: It's almost like we've seen in the NBA in recent years.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Teams are like, we'll give you layups. We won't give
- 15:47Speaker 3: you layups or three-pointers. You can have the mid-range. And
- 15:50Speaker 3: in the playoffs, that's hurt teams. But in the regular season,
- 15:53Speaker 3: that's been like the number one seeds in the NBA.
- 15:55Speaker 3: Milwaukee Bucks, a few years ago now, they were famous
- 15:58Speaker 3: for like, you have those mid-range.
- 16:01Speaker 2: You're going to be terrible at shooting threes against us.
- 16:03Speaker 3: And you're not going to get easy dunks and layups
- 16:06Speaker 3: at the rim. And they were the number one seed
- 16:08Speaker 3: for year in, year out for a few years there.
- 16:10Speaker 3: So it's like that in football where what you're saying, hey,
- 16:15Speaker 3: we're not going to give up the big play. You
- 16:17Speaker 3: can dink and dunk all you want. Obviously, we're being
- 16:21Speaker 3: greedy where it's like, just don't let them have anything, right?
- 16:25Speaker 6: No yards for you. You get nothing.
- 16:27Speaker 2: And that's obviously unrealistic.
- 16:28Speaker 6: Against Colorado, that might be the case.
- 16:30Speaker 5: I mean, Isaac Wilson's one of those guys that he's
- 16:32Speaker 5: shown he can throw balls in there. It seemed like
- 16:34Speaker 5: every time somebody played Brett Favre, they'd be like, well,
- 16:37Speaker 5: he's going to give us some chances. He's going to
- 16:39Speaker 5: give us three or four where if we catch him,
- 16:41Speaker 5: we get interceptions and we can make big plays defensively.
- 16:44Speaker 5: But Isaac Wilson, he threw an interception into his own
- 16:47Speaker 5: end zone for a pick six that went, I think.
- 16:50Speaker 6: Zero yards.
- 16:53Speaker 5: I think we're going to see a more aggressive Utah
- 16:55Speaker 5: defense kind of forcing Isaac Wilson to make good decisions
- 16:58Speaker 5: because I think they're going to bank on him giving
- 17:01Speaker 5: Utah a few free ones.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Yeah, and they might have the same approach. It's not like,
- 17:07Speaker 3: unlike Kansas, Colorado doesn't have much of a run game, right? Kansas,
- 17:11Speaker 3: that was their strength going into the Utah game, which
- 17:14Speaker 3: is why they gave up more passing yards against Kansas,
- 17:17Speaker 3: because they were like, we want to make them throw.
- 17:19Speaker 3: You heard Morgan Scali say that in his press conference,
- 17:21Speaker 3: and I think on the coach's show this week. Colorado,
- 17:27Speaker 3: you almost want to have the same mindset because you
- 17:30Speaker 3: know Isaac Wilson so well. You know, and we love
- 17:33Speaker 3: Isaac still here, but I will say this. We know
- 17:36Speaker 3: that he's very flawed, right? It's the reason why he
- 17:39Speaker 3: was the third string quarterback last year when he was
- 17:41Speaker 3: still with the Utes and the reason why he probably decided, hey,
- 17:46Speaker 3: I don't really have an opportunity because they got Devin
- 17:48Speaker 3: and Bird here because he's a flawed quarterback and Utah
- 17:53Speaker 3: can take advantage of of a flawed quarterback like that.
- 17:56Speaker 2: That's a good point by you.
- 17:57Speaker 6: Here's a question.
- 17:58Speaker 5: How quickly does Bill mention in the broadcast and how
- 18:01Speaker 5: much does the TV broadcast mention how quickly that Isaac
- 18:04Speaker 5: Wilson grew up a Utah fan? Considering that every time
- 18:07Speaker 5: Zach Wilson took the field for the first time at BYU,
- 18:10Speaker 5: they had to mention that he grew up a Utah fan.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Dad played for the program.
- 18:14Speaker 5: They're going to mention Isaac Wilson being a former Ute,
- 18:16Speaker 5: but they're going to mention that he grew up a
- 18:17Speaker 5: Utah fan as well.
- 18:18Speaker 6: His dad played at Utah and Zach Wilson.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Is in the NFL.
- 18:23Speaker 3: It's the Matt Harpering played football of the, of college
- 18:27Speaker 3: of this college football.
- 18:28Speaker 6: Jake Murphy is Adele Murphy's son.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Wait, what?
- 18:31Speaker 3: Yeah, that was my, that's always my go-to is watching
- 18:35Speaker 3: growing up a jazz fan, watching a bunch of the
- 18:37Speaker 3: jazz local broadcasts is fuller. You know, when Matt Harpering
- 18:42Speaker 3: football player, Georgia tech, Hey, Matt Harpering, he plays like
- 18:45Speaker 3: a football.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Player, little Jerry, little Jerry. Um, Absolutely.
- 18:50Speaker 3: And then speaking of Zach Wilson, the one that got
- 18:53Speaker 3: made fun of in the COVID season when he was incredible, got,
- 18:59Speaker 3: you know, is the season that got him to be
- 19:01Speaker 3: the number two overall pick, which has not worked out
- 19:03Speaker 3: well in the NFL, of course, was the, hey, he's
- 19:06Speaker 3: being trained by John Beck.
- 19:07Speaker 6: Did you know that?
- 19:07Speaker 2: Did you know that John Beck's working with him?
- 19:09Speaker 6: Had to make that long, long, long drive out to
- 19:12Speaker 6: see John Beck every weekend. Exactly.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Going to the text line, Cade. One of our regulars,
- 19:18Speaker 3: we love you, Cade, texted in, consistency is my key
- 19:21Speaker 3: for both sides of the ball, all gas, no brakes.
- 19:25Speaker 3: That's kind of the point I was making. Stay consistent.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Don't have long lulls where you're just not getting anything
- 19:31Speaker 3: done on the offensive end. There's been at least one
- 19:34Speaker 3: of those every game, it feels like, maybe besides the
- 19:36Speaker 3: Idaho game. I'd like for them to get that right.
- 19:42Speaker 3: In this game against Colorado too, Cade. Great text there.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Want to see zero injuries. This is the next texter, 1943.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Want to see zero injuries.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Injuries.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Have Devin play the first half, then let Bird take
- 19:53Speaker 3: over the second half. I mean, that is absolutely FCS
- 19:58Speaker 3: football treatment by 1943 there. I'm not sure that Utah's
- 20:03Speaker 3: going to have that kind of luxury against Colorado, but
- 20:07Speaker 3: that speaks to just the perception of just how inferior
- 20:11Speaker 3: the Buffaloes.
- 20:12Speaker 5: Seem to be compared to the Utes, Tyson. And, you know,
- 20:15Speaker 5: I think we can make those statements. I think we
- 20:18Speaker 5: can think that way. The players can't, though, because I
- 20:20Speaker 5: think Morgan Scully is going to remind them that they
- 20:22Speaker 5: gave Texas Tech a pretty good test for about three quarters.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 20:25Speaker 3: And he's going to remind them that, hey, this is
- 20:28Speaker 3: the Colorado Buffaloes. This is not the Idaho Vandals. This
- 20:31Speaker 3: is not my Utah Tech Trailblazers.
- 20:34Speaker 5: As Dan Hawkins, former Colorado coach, once said, it's the
- 20:36Speaker 5: Big 12 in any of their murals.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Yeah, there you go. And then fifty nine ninety five.
- 20:42Speaker 3: I think it feels that way.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Oh, let's see.
- 20:45Speaker 3: They need he shot off a couple of texts in
- 20:48Speaker 3: a row here. They need three plus turnovers, especially with Isaac.
- 20:51Speaker 3: He said Zach Wilson. But I know what you mean there.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Isaac Wilson playing. They know his tendencies. That's the point
- 20:58Speaker 3: Tyson and I were just making. Good, good point by you.
- 21:01Speaker 6: And then.
- 21:02Speaker 3: And then the follow-up is, I think it feels that
- 21:05Speaker 3: way because our D-line is not what it has been
- 21:07Speaker 3: in the past. Getting more pressure makes them more elite.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I think you're responding to me saying it doesn't feel
- 21:13Speaker 3: like the defense has been as dominant, making as many
- 21:18Speaker 3: big plays this year. It's been more, from my perception,
- 21:24Speaker 3: more bend but don't break instead of just a dominant,
- 21:26Speaker 3: stifling defense. Great text by you. Thank you for sending
- 21:30Speaker 3: those in. Keep them coming, 877-353-0700. If we want to
- 21:35Speaker 3: make Tyson work a little bit more, you can call us, too, 877-353-0700. Oh,
- 21:39Speaker 3: if I know how to work the phone machine here. Yeah,
- 21:43Speaker 3: I'll help you out. Don't you worry about that.
- 21:45Speaker 5: Utah, they're not getting as much of a pass rush,
- 21:48Speaker 5: but defensively, they've done an outstanding job stopping the run,
- 21:51Speaker 5: especially early in games. They're only allowing, what, 78.8 yards
- 21:55Speaker 5: rushing per game, which ranks in the top five nationally.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Yeah, they really have. And OC made this great point,
- 22:01Speaker 3: and this is the way that I think, too. You
- 22:04Speaker 3: can have the total defense stat, which is, of course,
- 22:09Speaker 3: total yards per game given up. You can have the
- 22:14Speaker 3: total pass defense, total run defense, yards per game given
- 22:17Speaker 3: up in both those categories, respectively. For me, it's like,
- 22:23Speaker 3: how many points are you giving up? And yes, you
- 22:27Speaker 3: don't want it to be, or no, you don't want
- 22:29Speaker 3: it to be Ben, but don't break all the time.
- 22:32Speaker 3: You want it to be more dominant than that, but
- 22:34Speaker 3: honestly scoreboard, right? There's maybe some nitpicky things we can
- 22:40Speaker 3: point to is like, we'd like to have more of this.
- 22:42Speaker 3: We'd like to be more dominant in these areas, but
- 22:46Speaker 3: you're giving up less. The most points you've given up
- 22:49Speaker 3: this season is last week against Kansas, 24 points. And
- 22:54Speaker 3: before that it was 17, right? Iowa State. And so
- 22:59Speaker 3: most of the games you're giving up 10 points or less.
- 23:02Speaker 3: As long as you keep doing that, the defense is
- 23:06Speaker 3: playing well enough. We're spoiled because we're used to it
- 23:11Speaker 3: just being more dominant. And we're used to these ball hawks, RSNB, right?
- 23:17Speaker 3: In the secondary, getting more pick sixes. doing more with
- 23:23Speaker 3: the interceptions on an interception return than what we've seen,
- 23:27Speaker 3: not just catching it and then getting tackled immediately or
- 23:31Speaker 3: catching you got some room but not able to shake
- 23:33Speaker 3: the defender in front of you to get a good
- 23:36Speaker 3: interception return. Instead, you get taken down pretty close to
- 23:39Speaker 3: after you caught the ball.
- 23:42Speaker 2: We're spoiled. The point is you're getting those turnovers. And
- 23:46Speaker 2: you're keeping the points off the board.
- 23:48Speaker 3: If they continue, if that's what we continue to see,
- 23:50Speaker 3: and we don't see these, these get right things that were,
- 23:54Speaker 3: that were pointed out here, you still got to feel
- 23:56Speaker 3: really good.
- 23:57Speaker 2: It's just, we want to feel better than really good, right? Tyson.
- 23:59Speaker 2: We want to feel, we want to feel.
- 24:01Speaker 6: Like this team's going to win 77 and nothing.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 24:05Speaker 5: And we on college football, you've, you want style points
- 24:08Speaker 5: because after all, you're still your playoff fade.
- 24:10Speaker 6: If you don't win, the conference is going to be
- 24:12Speaker 6: judged on a committee.
- 24:13Speaker 4: Yep.
- 24:13Speaker 2: It's, it's completely subjective. It's true.
- 24:16Speaker 3: And talking about these things that we'd like to see
- 24:21Speaker 3: Utah get better at against an inferior opponent like Colorado
- 24:26Speaker 3: this week leads me into my next point here. What
- 24:32Speaker 3: I took away from a crazy college football Saturday this
- 24:37Speaker 3: last week, Tyson, including Utah's game, is just that almost
- 24:42Speaker 3: every team is flawed.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Almost every good team....
- 24:46Speaker 3: Is somewhat, not fatally flawed, obviously. These guys got one
- 24:51Speaker 3: loss or they're undefeated. Utah's undefeated. It's not fatal flaws,
- 24:54Speaker 3: but it's pretty significantly flawed in some ways, right? Texas
- 24:58Speaker 3: was not a great number one overall team. Oklahoma proved
- 25:05Speaker 3: that in the Red River rivalry game. Arch Manning, he
- 25:09Speaker 3: had way too many turnovers. Oklahoma took advantage of that
- 25:12Speaker 3: and upset Texas. they even, they didn't even look very
- 25:16Speaker 3: good in the game when they upset my Buckeyes.
- 25:18Speaker 4: Right.
- 25:20Speaker 3: And it was only barely an upset. It was number
- 25:22Speaker 3: one versus number four, but still they, they looked pretty
- 25:25Speaker 3: bad in that game until the Buckeyes let them come
- 25:28Speaker 3: back with an incredible fourth quarter.
- 25:30Speaker 2: But even it's not like they scored, they won 24,
- 25:34Speaker 2: 23 Tyson.
- 25:34Speaker 3: It's not like they, they put up 35 to 40
- 25:39Speaker 3: points and just completely dismantled the Buckeyes.
- 25:41Speaker 2: So it, A flawed number one team, they're not number
- 25:44Speaker 2: one anymore.
- 25:44Speaker 5: Well, I think in this era of NIL and of
- 25:46Speaker 5: the transfer portal, teams aren't going to be as deep
- 25:49Speaker 5: as they used to be. So when teams start getting injuries,
- 25:52Speaker 5: and even guys that you probably would have as backups,
- 25:56Speaker 5: they're starting elsewhere. And so teams aren't as deep as
- 25:58Speaker 5: they used to be. And teams aren't as complete as
- 26:00Speaker 5: they used to be. And so I think you're probably
- 26:03Speaker 5: seeing the middle class of college football be a little
- 26:06Speaker 5: bit better, but I think you're seeing less dominant top
- 26:08Speaker 5: teams because they're just not as deep as it used
- 26:10Speaker 5: to be.
- 26:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 2: It's a great point by you.
- 26:11Speaker 3: And speaking of Ohio state for anyone that's like, Oh,
- 26:14Speaker 3: this guy's just panning the team that beat them because
- 26:17Speaker 3: he wants Ohio state to, to feel better about how
- 26:19Speaker 3: state now, like they're also very flawed.
- 26:21Speaker 2: They blew it. They blew it.
- 26:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:23Speaker 3: They blew a 20 point lead in the fourth quarter
- 26:25Speaker 3: against a flawed Texas squad. And honestly, the defense has
- 26:29Speaker 3: been really good, but they, it, The it's been such
- 26:33Speaker 3: a strength. It's been like the best defense in college
- 26:35Speaker 3: football the last three or four years this year. They're
- 26:38Speaker 3: giving up a touchdown or so more against inferior teams
- 26:43Speaker 3: than they've done in the last couple of years. So
- 26:44Speaker 3: they've got some warts. BYU's warts right now is is
- 26:48Speaker 3: significant injuries.
- 26:49Speaker 5: L.J.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Martin's out for another few weeks.
- 26:52Speaker 8: Right.
- 26:52Speaker 1: They.
- 26:53Speaker 2: They. Got it done.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Bear Bachmeier was awesome against Iowa State, but it wasn't
- 26:57Speaker 3: a dominant performance by BYU against the inferior Iowa State team.
- 27:03Speaker 3: Ole Miss got destroyed by Florida. They're a top 10
- 27:05Speaker 3: team still. They got destroyed by Florida. Barely beat a
- 27:08Speaker 3: three loss Louisville team like they got some warts. Texas
- 27:14Speaker 3: Tech's offense just looks okay. Just kind of like last year, right?
- 27:17Speaker 3: Same kind of story as last year.
- 27:19Speaker 5: We're seeing exactly why Texas Tech tried so hard to
- 27:22Speaker 5: make sure that Brendan Swords was eligible because they knew
- 27:24Speaker 5: what they had.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 27:26Speaker 3: And then we talked about the things that are not
- 27:28Speaker 3: ideal about Utah already. We'll talk more college football as
- 27:32Speaker 3: the show goes along. Tyson and I filling in for
- 27:36Speaker 3: OC today on the Sean O'Connell show. But up next,
- 27:39Speaker 3: real treat, we got Gordy in studio, which has not
- 27:44Speaker 3: been a college football time segment over the last couple
- 27:47Speaker 3: of years. So it's really excited to have an hour
- 27:50Speaker 3: with Gordy next on the Sean O'Connell show on Utah's
- 27:54Speaker 3: number one sports talk in your home of the Utes ESPN, 792,
- 27:56Speaker 3: one FM.
- 28:11Speaker 1: What the matter with your hair?
- 28:16Speaker 7: Peace out.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Let's get the latest on the Utah Jazz with former
- 28:19Speaker 1: Jazz assistant coach Gordy Chiesa. He's forgotten more about the
- 28:23Speaker 1: NBA than any of us will ever know.
- 28:25Speaker 7: Let's not get crazy.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Come for the hoops talk. Stay for his list of
- 28:29Speaker 1: the day.
- 28:29Speaker 7: My list today.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Here's OC with basketball savant Gordy Chiesa on the Sean
- 28:35Speaker 1: O'Connell Show.
- 28:36Speaker 3: All right, no OC today, but Gordy Chiesa is here
- 28:42Speaker 3: in studio.
- 28:42Speaker 2: James Peterson filling in for OC. He's in Chicago.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Calling some pfl fights maybe we catch up with him
- 28:48Speaker 3: tomorrow maybe air some grievances with him tomorrow we'll see
- 28:52Speaker 3: if he's available but right now you heard the big
- 28:56Speaker 3: voice guys say gordy chiesa in studio live on youtube
- 29:01Speaker 3: at espn 700 sports utah you can see all of
- 29:04Speaker 3: his all of his papers spread out bevy of information
- 29:08Speaker 3: as we talk utah jazz and nba for the next
- 29:11Speaker 3: hour here gordy So excited to do this with you.
- 29:14Speaker 2: How are you doing?
- 29:14Speaker 7: I am doing well, James. Thank you. Thanks for the invite.
- 29:17Speaker 7: It's our 10th season together, all of us here in
- 29:20Speaker 7: the studio, and we're excited for the NBA season and
- 29:24Speaker 7: also the NFL and also, James, for all the fans
- 29:30Speaker 7: around the state, including BYU and Notre Dame.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Game day in town. And the big news on that,
- 29:38Speaker 3: I don't know if you heard, Gordy, Steve Young. coming
- 29:40Speaker 3: back to town to be the celebrity guest picker.
- 29:42Speaker 5: Oh, sure.
- 29:42Speaker 7: Absolutely.
- 29:43Speaker 2: For game day.
- 29:43Speaker 7: You know, one time, James, I went to the game
- 29:45Speaker 7: one time, BYU, Notre Dame, back in 2004.
- 29:49Speaker 2: I was invited.
- 29:49Speaker 7: I was there. I was sitting there at the game.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Was that in Provo?
- 29:53Speaker 7: In Provo.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Okay.
- 29:54Speaker 7: Yes, I went to the game.
- 29:56Speaker 2: That's the last time Notre Dame's come to Provo.
- 29:59Speaker 4: Okay, Gene.
- 30:00Speaker 2: I was there.
- 30:01Speaker 7: I was there. And I remember I met the president
- 30:03Speaker 7: of BYU. And he was a jazz fan. And so
- 30:06Speaker 7: we're some sort of event tent. I'm not sure I
- 30:09Speaker 7: got invited. So it sounds like I'm skeptical here. I
- 30:12Speaker 7: somehow got invited. Yeah. Who knows how, but they invited me.
- 30:15Speaker 7: So I went to the game. And I remember talking-
- 30:18Speaker 7: to the BYU people, and BYU won.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and that was back when you were still on
- 30:23Speaker 3: the bench, coaching with Jerry Sloan.
- 30:26Speaker 7: That's right, back in 2004. I coached with Jerry from 1989.
- 30:31Speaker 7: We came together in 89. I left in 2005 to
- 30:34Speaker 7: go to the Nets, and Jerry left coaching in 2011,
- 30:38Speaker 7: and Tyrone Corbin followed him.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Was Bobby Marks with the Nets at that time?
- 30:43Speaker 7: Yes, he was. Yes, he was. Bobby Marks is with us,
- 30:45Speaker 7: and Bobby Marks listens right now, Bobby Marks works for ESPN,
- 30:49Speaker 7: the national affiliate, and does a great job in-house as
- 30:53Speaker 7: far as front office. That guy knows every nuance of
- 30:57Speaker 7: the salary cap. James, you and I, we know the
- 30:59Speaker 7: basic parts of it. These people know all of it.
- 31:02Speaker 7: The nuances, like anything. Here's the question of professional sports.
- 31:06Speaker 7: How do you develop a roster within the framework of
- 31:10Speaker 7: the salary cap slash luxury tax?
- 31:13Speaker 2: He knows everything.
- 31:14Speaker 3: We know that aprons are involved. He knows exactly what
- 31:17Speaker 3: that means. And he also knows how to avoid doing
- 31:22Speaker 3: what Steve Ballmer and the Clippers did. He knows the
- 31:25Speaker 3: sour cap circumvention rules and what lines not to cross.
- 31:29Speaker 2: So he knows it. down to those minute details.
- 31:33Speaker 7: Oh, very much. Also, you mentioned the word apron. See,
- 31:36Speaker 7: guys like me, apron to me is like a barbecue.
- 31:38Speaker 7: You have an apron at barbecue.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Or in the kitchen.
- 31:41Speaker 7: In the kitchen, yeah. But Bobby Marks type people, because
- 31:43Speaker 7: they're much smaller than we are, is that they know
- 31:45Speaker 7: the apron.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:47Speaker 7: It's the first apron and second apron. And before that,
- 31:50Speaker 7: it's a salary cap. And it sounds to everyday folk,
- 31:54Speaker 7: it sounds very confusing. And it is somewhat. However, when
- 31:58Speaker 7: you get it right, it's magical because the question is,
- 32:02Speaker 7: You could be a wonderful team, but if you have injuries,
- 32:06Speaker 7: is your roster good enough to fight through adversity? Because
- 32:11Speaker 7: we know in the NFL and also in the NBA,
- 32:13Speaker 7: it's a battle, James, of attrition.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:16Speaker 7: Attrition. where suddenly you're in basketball, your 10th man is
- 32:21Speaker 7: now your 7th man on a road trip in the
- 32:24Speaker 7: middle of January, and he plays well and outplays the
- 32:28Speaker 7: starting small fold of the other guys. Suddenly on a
- 32:31Speaker 7: road trip, you go 4-1 versus what? 1-4.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Absolutely, and there's a significant jazz injury. You've already talked
- 32:39Speaker 3: about it with OC. I want to get into it
- 32:42Speaker 3: with you as well. Before we do that, I want
- 32:45Speaker 3: to let you know, This segment brought to you by
- 32:47Speaker 3: Aladdin Injuries, your VLUX Skylights dealer. And also brought to
- 32:52Speaker 3: you by Uintah Golf by Worldwide Golf.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Get there.
- 32:55Speaker 3: And Tyson, we talked so much college football in the
- 33:00Speaker 3: first segment. We failed to mention that there is an
- 33:02Speaker 3: ALCS game happening right now in Cleveland. Guardians and Rays,
- 33:07Speaker 3: that series is tied at one apiece. It's a pivotal game.
- 33:10Speaker 3: Did the Guardians just score, by the way? Is that
- 33:12Speaker 3: what I'm seeing, Tyson?
- 33:12Speaker 5: Looks like Nathaniel Lowe just hit an RBI double bottom
- 33:15Speaker 5: of the second inning. Cleveland now leads Tampa 1-0.
- 33:18Speaker 7: 1-0.
- 33:19Speaker 3: Former Jazz man Gordy Donovan Mitchell in attendance. He was
- 33:23Speaker 3: on the field. You saw him on the TBS radio.
- 33:26Speaker 3: Pre-game show, getting interviewed. He probably threw out the first
- 33:29Speaker 3: pitch or something in his Cleveland Guardians gear.
- 33:31Speaker 7: He's a baseball guy because of his dad.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 33:33Speaker 7: His dad played for the Mets and worked for the Mets.
- 33:36Speaker 3: Still a Mets fan, but he plays in Cleveland now.
- 33:39Speaker 3: He's doing the right thing, repping the hometown city, trying
- 33:42Speaker 3: to be that community advocate.
- 33:43Speaker 7: Very much. But speaking of your rep, James, I live
- 33:45Speaker 7: in a neighborhood where there's so many Dodgers fans. And foolishly,
- 33:50Speaker 7: I was talking to them this morning.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Foolishly.
- 33:52Speaker 7: They're about to get swept. Exactly right. It's dangerous by you.
- 33:57Speaker 7: You're exactly right, James. I was trying to give them
- 34:00Speaker 7: encouragement because I'm a man of the people.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:04Speaker 7: But these people, Dodger fans, some of them that I know,
- 34:09Speaker 7: that they lost their bravado.
- 34:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:13Speaker 7: Two-time defending champion. We're going to three-peat.
- 34:17Speaker 3: Every great player in the league, it seems like, whether
- 34:20Speaker 3: it's a pitcher or a hitter or a fielder, two
- 34:24Speaker 3: on that team.
- 34:24Speaker 7: So getting back to Judge. So, James, segue, part of
- 34:28Speaker 7: it is that with the Jazz is that we mentioned
- 34:31Speaker 7: about the Sally Cap roster, a great thing. It's a
- 34:34Speaker 7: thing called chemistry. So you can never equate chemistry towards
- 34:38Speaker 7: having knockout talent. Now, you need talent to win. In
- 34:42Speaker 7: the NBA and also in the NFL. Yes, talent rules.
- 34:47Speaker 7: But within that talent, if you don't have a roster
- 34:50Speaker 7: that plays together with connectivity in any sport, the chances
- 34:56Speaker 7: are winning greatly as far as getting to one, getting
- 35:00Speaker 7: to the playoffs, two, advancing the playoffs, and then three,
- 35:03Speaker 7: get to the promised land, a gate to heaven, meaning what?
- 35:06Speaker 7: NBA or NFL Super Bowl champions. And that's where it
- 35:08Speaker 7: gets so interesting. You can pay a whole bunch of
- 35:11Speaker 7: money for a lot of players But if they don't
- 35:13Speaker 7: play together and there's an element of fun when they
- 35:17Speaker 7: play slash respect, that's what gets interesting.
- 35:21Speaker 2: It absolutely does. I'm old enough, Gordy, and I know
- 35:24Speaker 2: you are too.
- 35:25Speaker 7: Old enough.
- 35:25Speaker 1: You're young.
- 35:26Speaker 3: To remember that the Yankees were the Dodgers, the way
- 35:30Speaker 3: the Dodgers are now. It's like, oh, my gosh, they
- 35:33Speaker 3: got another all-star? Hate that. That's the way that anyone
- 35:37Speaker 3: who's not a Dodgers fan reacts any time they sign
- 35:41Speaker 3: or trade for a great player.
- 35:42Speaker 2: They're down 3-0, though, even with all that talent down 3-0.
- 35:45Speaker 7: Very much.
- 35:46Speaker 3: You're exactly right about the chemistry thing. And you're exactly
- 35:49Speaker 3: right about what we were talking about before we got
- 35:51Speaker 3: on that baseball tangent.
- 35:51Speaker 7: This is weird. He keeps telling me exactly right. I
- 35:53Speaker 7: wish my wife was listening. I wish she was listening.
- 35:56Speaker 3: Nancy, are you taking notes?
- 35:59Speaker 1: Come on.
- 35:59Speaker 7: James, thank you so much.
- 36:00Speaker 2: A lot of you, by the way.
- 36:01Speaker 7: I'm getting confidence here.
- 36:05Speaker 3: No, but you're right about this, too, Gordy, before we
- 36:08Speaker 3: got on that baseball playoffs tangent about how, Roster construction
- 36:15Speaker 3: has just as much to do about making sure you
- 36:18Speaker 3: have good depth as you have great stars and great
- 36:21Speaker 3: starting lineup and great players to begin games and get
- 36:25Speaker 3: you close out games. And the Jazz are going to
- 36:28Speaker 3: find out just how much depth that they have. I'm
- 36:32Speaker 3: not sure they have enough at the center position, Gordy.
- 36:35Speaker 3: I was feeling that way after they traded Walker Kessler,
- 36:38Speaker 3: of course, even with bringing back Yusuf Nurkic. After that,
- 36:43Speaker 3: I did not like what they did to shore up
- 36:46Speaker 3: the backup center position. Jackson Hayes, their best player that
- 36:49Speaker 3: they got this offseason at that position. And now, Yusuf Nurkic,
- 36:53Speaker 3: is he out four weeks?
- 36:54Speaker 2: Is that right, Gordy?
- 36:55Speaker 7: Yes, he's out.
- 36:56Speaker 3: They're going to find out just how big a hole
- 37:00Speaker 3: they have with Jackson Hayes as their starting center, probably.
- 37:05Speaker 3: That's who it's been in the preseason, if I'm not mistaken.
- 37:07Speaker 4: Correct.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Rather than having a healthy Yusuf Nurkic.
- 37:10Speaker 7: Very much. Yusuf Nurkic, for the listeners, is that he'll
- 37:14Speaker 7: come back roughly, I'm guesstimating, November 20th of this year.
- 37:18Speaker 7: So he'll miss roughly between 14 to 16 games.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Could be much worse. Like, that's only a month.
- 37:24Speaker 7: A month, yeah.
- 37:24Speaker 3: And there's like six months in the season. So, Jazz,
- 37:28Speaker 3: there's plenty of time to overcome this. I just wonder
- 37:31Speaker 3: how big a hole they're going to dig. They're going
- 37:33Speaker 3: to have to dig out of, with Jackson Hayes as
- 37:36Speaker 3: their starting center, I'll do respect.
- 37:37Speaker 4: Okay.
- 37:38Speaker 7: But add to that though, but the jazz got a good, uh,
- 37:40Speaker 7: early schedule where the jazz first, um, six wrestling games,
- 37:44Speaker 7: fire at home. So the jazz have a chance to
- 37:49Speaker 7: start out very, very well. They're getting back to use
- 37:51Speaker 7: of Nurgage. The Bosnian bully is that he has a
- 37:54Speaker 7: plantar fasciitis, uh, tear on his, um, second toe of
- 37:58Speaker 7: his right foot. And again, it, Us normals, if we
- 38:02Speaker 7: had a soft foot, we'd be able to rest it
- 38:04Speaker 7: for a few weeks and we'd feel better. But when
- 38:06Speaker 7: you're a basketball player, and by the way, when you're 6'11, 295,
- 38:11Speaker 7: 290 pounds, there's so much stress on the lower part
- 38:14Speaker 7: of your body. So that's why the Jazz are using
- 38:18Speaker 7: good judgment by the doctors to get it healed properly
- 38:21Speaker 7: and to be able to go. All right, so the Jazz,
- 38:23Speaker 7: as far as James is alluding to about the Senate position,
- 38:27Speaker 7: Jackson Hayes has a bouncy game, but he's not physical.
- 38:30Speaker 7: Mo Bamba's got a shot-blocking ability, but he can't score
- 38:35Speaker 7: on his own, which we call then he's a recipient scorer.
- 38:38Speaker 7: He needs help to score, either dribble drive to the penetration,
- 38:41Speaker 7: lob pass and short corner spacing, offensive rebounding, broken play scoring.
- 38:46Speaker 7: But you can't go to him as far as in
- 38:47Speaker 7: the mid-block to score or face-up jump shot. All right,
- 38:51Speaker 7: so now Jaron Jackson, part of the equation. He's a
- 38:54Speaker 7: finesse big. Hey, we love him outside. He can make
- 38:57Speaker 7: three-point shots, and he's a highly skilled big guy. But
- 39:02Speaker 7: he doesn't rebound his position. He only averages 5.1 rebounds
- 39:05Speaker 7: per game. And so in this Jazz lineup, without the
- 39:10Speaker 7: Bosnian Beast, you need him to rebound more. Larry Malkin
- 39:13Speaker 7: got hops. He got some serious hops. All right. But
- 39:17Speaker 7: he's a finesse rebounder. So it's almost like the two
- 39:21Speaker 7: guys that are going to have to rebound, they're both finesse.
- 39:24Speaker 7: They've got to be more gritty in the present tense.
- 39:27Speaker 7: And then with Jackson Hayes and with... Mo Bamba, as
- 39:31Speaker 7: far as giving one start, one reliever, is that they've
- 39:34Speaker 7: got to almost overachieve offensively to make it work. Last
- 39:38Speaker 7: point about rebounding. Besides effort and tenacity, you need what? Technique.
- 39:43Speaker 7: So the Jazz, though, the Jazz perimeter guys have James
- 39:47Speaker 7: have to rebound down, which means that so suddenly... Keontae George,
- 39:51Speaker 7: Darren Peterson, Ace Bailey, who's got talent, certainly, Isaiah Collier,
- 39:57Speaker 7: Josh Green, Steve Mihailuk, who should play a lot, is
- 40:02Speaker 7: that those guys, they can't watch and stare. They're going
- 40:05Speaker 7: to get involved in a mix. So they've got to
- 40:07Speaker 7: rebound down to help out the big guys in the game.
- 40:10Speaker 7: Will they do it? Let's find out.
- 40:12Speaker 3: If you've got a question for Gordie, by the way, 877-353-0700.
- 40:14Speaker 3: We got him for.
- 40:18Speaker 3: The next forty five minutes here in studio so go
- 40:21Speaker 3: ahead and send that in eight seven seven three five
- 40:23Speaker 3: three zero seven hundred jazz nba whatever kind of question
- 40:28Speaker 3: you got for gordy chiesa i'll try to read it
- 40:31Speaker 3: off for you here as we discuss uh... some basketball
- 40:35Speaker 3: with our basketball guru guru here in studio one other
- 40:39Speaker 3: thing when it comes to roster construction gordy this one
- 40:42Speaker 3: kind of snuck up on me the rookie extension deadline
- 40:47Speaker 3: is monday so Got a few days until then, and
- 40:52Speaker 3: thankfully the Jazz extended.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Their main.
- 40:57Speaker 3: Guy who they wanted to give an extension to. That's
- 41:00Speaker 3: Keontae George, who's in this rookie class eligible for an extension.
- 41:04Speaker 3: Thankfully they got that done. So there's only one other
- 41:08Speaker 3: guy from that class. They traded away Taylor Hendricks to
- 41:12Speaker 3: get Jaron Jackson Jr., so that leaves Bryce Sensabaugh, who
- 41:15Speaker 3: was a first-round pick of that 2023 draft. So that's
- 41:21Speaker 3: the question. Do you think the Jazz will extend Bryce Sensabaugh,
- 41:27Speaker 3: or do you think they'll let him enter free agency?
- 41:29Speaker 3: And in your opinion, I want to give your opinion, too.
- 41:32Speaker 3: Should they extend him, or should they just wait until
- 41:34Speaker 3: he's a restricted free agent? What do you think they
- 41:36Speaker 3: should do with Bryce Sensabaugh before Monday?
- 41:38Speaker 7: Wait. I'd wait. Yeah, just wait. They like him. He's
- 41:41Speaker 7: a good shooter. He plays hard. That's commendable. But I'd
- 41:44Speaker 7: just wait because he has very little leverage as far
- 41:47Speaker 7: as in the big picture of the NBA. But the
- 41:49Speaker 7: Jazz like him. He's homegrown. He's a 28th pick in
- 41:52Speaker 7: a draft. You feel you have good moments with him
- 41:54Speaker 7: as far as coming off the bench. So he can
- 41:57Speaker 7: play in the NBA. But I just wait because a
- 42:00Speaker 7: lot of times you might need his skill set as
- 42:05Speaker 7: far as in a trade later on. this in February.
- 42:10Speaker 7: It's possible because he does have value. And if he
- 42:14Speaker 7: overachieves right now this year, which is wonderful, the Jets
- 42:17Speaker 7: are successful, then he's a restricted free agent, then you
- 42:20Speaker 7: can reassess then as far as by giving him the
- 42:23Speaker 7: qualifier offer, then wait to sell him bids on him.
- 42:27Speaker 7: Then if a worse scenario, next July, where he had
- 42:30Speaker 7: a great season and he has a contract as far
- 42:34Speaker 7: as other teams, then try to sign and trade him
- 42:36Speaker 7: to get value for him. So I just wait, even
- 42:40Speaker 7: though I do like him as a player. I'm talking
- 42:42Speaker 7: more the business side of it right now.
- 42:44Speaker 3: Yeah, and it also sounds like, Gordy, based on that
- 42:47Speaker 3: opinion that you have, I think we share this one.
- 42:50Speaker 3: I think we both like him as a player. we
- 42:53Speaker 3: both see how he could contribute to a team that's
- 42:56Speaker 3: trying to contend for a champion championship, especially in that
- 43:00Speaker 3: like microwave six, seventh man guy off the bench, instant offense,
- 43:05Speaker 3: whatever number he is off the bench, he's instant offense.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Whenever he's out there, you can absolutely picture that on
- 43:12Speaker 3: a team that's trying to win, which the jazz we
- 43:15Speaker 3: assume are starting this year.
- 43:16Speaker 4: Right.
- 43:18Speaker 3: But all that being said, he also feels like he's
- 43:22Speaker 3: more of an, end of the rotation guy and so
- 43:26Speaker 3: for that reason it does feel more prudent to go
- 43:30Speaker 3: the route that you're talking about let's wait and see
- 43:34Speaker 3: let's see how he develops this year maybe he's a
- 43:36Speaker 3: guy who's gonna who's gonna prove hey no i am
- 43:40Speaker 3: be i am towards the beginning at the start of
- 43:42Speaker 3: the top of the rotation here as a bench player
- 43:45Speaker 3: or as a fringe starter not towards the end of
- 43:48Speaker 3: the rotation and if he does that then you absolutely
- 43:50Speaker 3: want to bring him back in a long-term deal More likely,
- 43:53Speaker 3: he kind of stays the same, and maybe then you're
- 43:56Speaker 3: thinking more about, hey, let's look at some salary cap
- 43:59Speaker 3: flexibility for him. Let's look at some, can he be
- 44:03Speaker 3: used in a trade? If he were a player that
- 44:06Speaker 3: is obviously a lot better than he's shown, we probably
- 44:11Speaker 3: wouldn't be thinking that way about him, right?
- 44:13Speaker 2: Yeah, correct.
- 44:14Speaker 7: Yeah, also, part of it is getting playing time.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:17Speaker 7: So James alluding to, again, the– ninth man of a
- 44:22Speaker 7: team versus the seventh man. So the better teams get
- 44:28Speaker 7: the contracts correct towards winning, either presently or future tense,
- 44:33Speaker 7: as far as being successful. And that's why most times
- 44:37Speaker 7: when you just use an element of patience. Now the
- 44:41Speaker 7: Jazz probably are going to wait, but with Keontae George,
- 44:46Speaker 7: they're committed to him. So philosophically, to your point, I'll
- 44:50Speaker 7: call Keontae a guard.
- 44:52Speaker 4: All right?
- 44:52Speaker 7: And that's a compliment. He can score the ball, certainly.
- 44:55Speaker 7: So the Jazz already committed to Keontae George as far
- 44:58Speaker 7: as in that class right now.
- 45:00Speaker 2: And Darren Peterson, who they just drafted second overall.
- 45:02Speaker 3: Very much.
- 45:03Speaker 7: And also, let's not forget Ace Bailey. What's interesting with
- 45:06Speaker 7: Ace Bailey is that probably, it seems to me, he'll
- 45:10Speaker 7: be the six-man starter. And that's the catch word, starter.
- 45:14Speaker 2: All right?
- 45:14Speaker 7: Where he's going to play. So the question is, at
- 45:16Speaker 7: the end of the game, who's in the lineup? So
- 45:18Speaker 7: Ace Bailey is a major young fella talent, and he's good.
- 45:22Speaker 7: And it seems to me he's a good guy also
- 45:24Speaker 7: as far as his personality on the court. He's very coachable.
- 45:28Speaker 7: People tell me that he listens very intently, which is commendable.
- 45:31Speaker 7: And Ace got talent. So what you want to do
- 45:35Speaker 7: is that with Ace Bailey, probably is that he's part
- 45:40Speaker 7: of the Jazz future, certainly. So really, Jazz future in
- 45:44Speaker 7: the big picture is Keontae George, Darren Peterson, Ace Bailey,
- 45:49Speaker 7: and then we'll see how it plays out with the others.
- 45:53Speaker 7: Larry Markin and Jaron Jackson, they're all good players. The
- 45:56Speaker 7: question is the second or third contract, which is absolutely
- 45:59Speaker 7: part of it.
- 46:00Speaker 2: And they're in their early 30s, not their late 20s anymore.
- 46:04Speaker 3: So as far as how they fit into what you
- 46:07Speaker 3: think is your potential title contending window, as far as
- 46:11Speaker 3: age goes, that's certainly something to consider here. Got a
- 46:13Speaker 3: question from the text line, and then we're going to
- 46:16Speaker 3: go to our first break here. Spencer on the text
- 46:18Speaker 3: line says, question for Gordy. Is there a player you
- 46:21Speaker 3: coached who was particularly difficult to deal with or one
- 46:25Speaker 3: that the staff worried about while off the court? Is
- 46:28Speaker 3: there one that comes to mind?
- 46:30Speaker 7: Oh, many of them.
- 46:31Speaker 9: Many?
- 46:32Speaker 7: Oh, absolutely, many. It's a family show here on ESPN
- 46:36Speaker 7: Radio 700.
- 46:36Speaker 3: We don't have to go into details as to why
- 46:38Speaker 3: you might have been worried about them.
- 46:39Speaker 7: No, the answer is yeah.
- 46:41Speaker 3: But if you're comfortable naming some of them.
- 46:43Speaker 7: No, I'm not. That's like, you know, the guys right
- 46:47Speaker 7: now are retired. He's 53 years old.
- 46:49Speaker 2: They're listening to the show. We don't want to embarrass them.
- 46:51Speaker 7: The guy living in Mexico City right now, you know.
- 46:54Speaker 2: On the ESPN 700 app, tuned in.
- 46:55Speaker 7: No, he should be, right? No, however, every... Everybody has coaches,
- 47:00Speaker 7: guys like that. They have, again, it's not a perfect
- 47:05Speaker 7: world as far as your roster, as far as personalities.
- 47:08Speaker 7: And again, you know, as always, when does the maturity
- 47:13Speaker 7: kick in to a person? Is it age 22? Is
- 47:16Speaker 7: it 27? Is it 33? Is it 43? Hey, James,
- 47:21Speaker 7: I know some guys I hang out with who are
- 47:22Speaker 7: 80 years old. They're immature.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Really?
- 47:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Really?
- 47:25Speaker 7: 80? Immature?
- 47:26Speaker 4: What?
- 47:26Speaker 7: What are you talking about?
- 47:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:28Speaker 7: So the question is, when you're a basketball player in
- 47:31Speaker 7: the NFL, you have all this money around you and
- 47:34Speaker 7: all these other vices staring right in front of you,
- 47:38Speaker 7: how do you react? And again, the better teams, though, truly,
- 47:41Speaker 7: the better teams have dramatically less guys because they police themselves.
- 47:47Speaker 7: So the teams do. So even though the coaching staff
- 47:51Speaker 7: is the voice of authority, when it's all said and done,
- 47:55Speaker 7: it's the players in the locker room that they determine
- 47:59Speaker 7: so much as far as what they do. I call
- 48:02Speaker 7: that being an A & E, is that when the
- 48:04Speaker 7: team leadership is that they enforce the rules of the
- 48:08Speaker 7: coaching staff and they encourage players to what? To be
- 48:12Speaker 7: the best they can be. That's what? Being on time.
- 48:16Speaker 1: Curfew.
- 48:17Speaker 7: Imagine having curfew in jazz basketball. And last year, during playoffs,
- 48:21Speaker 7: we had a self-appointed captain's curfew where Carl and John,
- 48:25Speaker 7: those guys, They were the ones in charge of curfew.
- 48:28Speaker 7: And guess what? They ruled.
- 48:30Speaker 3: And there was nobody messing around. Being hall monitors at
- 48:34Speaker 3: the hotels?
- 48:34Speaker 7: The answer is yes, they were. Very much. And if
- 48:38Speaker 7: someone got a little bit wayward, if you get my drift, James, wayward,
- 48:42Speaker 7: that That we didn't know about it. I'm sure they
- 48:44Speaker 7: did because those guys took it in charge of it.
- 48:47Speaker 7: Because you know why? The stakes are so high. So,
- 48:48Speaker 7: for example, James, who was the guy in the Super
- 48:50Speaker 7: Bowl in New Orleans? How come it always happens in
- 48:53Speaker 7: New Orleans Super Bowl, someone that's on Bourbon Street, there's
- 48:55Speaker 7: something weird. So the guy's playing Super Bowl and suddenly
- 48:59Speaker 7: he's what? A distraction to the team because he gets
- 49:01Speaker 7: in trouble at 2 o'clock in the morning on Bourbon Street.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Really?
- 49:05Speaker 7: Yeah. Really.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Before the biggest game of your life.
- 49:09Speaker 4: Right.
- 49:09Speaker 7: So suddenly it's a distraction for the team.
- 49:12Speaker 8: Why?
- 49:12Speaker 7: So that's what happens.
- 49:14Speaker 2: So at least one guy every team you coach, probably.
- 49:18Speaker 7: Oh, absolutely.
- 49:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:19Speaker 2: Some knucklehead if you will a head case whatever.
- 49:22Speaker 7: Oh very much and also remember it's the person's also
- 49:25Speaker 7: people around him so a lot of times the guy's
- 49:29Speaker 7: wayward because it's his people around him that lead into
- 49:32Speaker 7: that and by the way When a guy's knucklehead retires
- 49:37Speaker 7: from the NBA, you know what happens also? His whole
- 49:40Speaker 7: people retire also. Because now they're what? Less important now.
- 49:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:44Speaker 7: They're less important. So when they're there, they're banging their
- 49:47Speaker 7: chest at my guy, my guy, my guy. Okay. When
- 49:50Speaker 7: you retire, though, you're not important at all.
- 49:52Speaker 3: They got a different guy who's still playing, probably. Yeah,
- 49:57Speaker 3: great story by you, Gordy. We're going to head to
- 49:59Speaker 3: a break here. Continue with Gordy for another half hour,
- 50:03Speaker 3: 40 minutes or so here on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 50:05Speaker 3: James Peterson filling in on Utah's number one sports talk
- 50:08Speaker 3: and your home of the U. CSPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 50:12Speaker 1: He's forgotten more about the NBA than any of us
- 50:14Speaker 1: will ever know. Come for the hoops talk.
- 50:18Speaker 2: Stay for his list of the day.
- 50:20Speaker 1: Here's OC with basketball savant Gordon Chiesa on the Sean
- 50:25Speaker 1: O'Connell Show.
- 50:28Speaker 3: Continuing our hour with Gordy Chiesa here in studio. Brought
- 50:34Speaker 3: to you by Aladdin Industries. Your V-Lux Skylights dealer. And
- 50:40Speaker 3: you went to golf by Worldwide Golf. Get there. Gordy,
- 50:46Speaker 3: we were talking as you came in about some of
- 50:49Speaker 3: the teams that are around the Jazz. They'll probably be
- 50:54Speaker 3: in the play-in mix. fifth or sixth seed in the
- 50:58Speaker 3: West maybe is the ceiling there. The Dallas Mavericks are
- 51:02Speaker 3: one of those teams, and they got themselves a brand
- 51:04Speaker 3: new head coach. No Jason Kidd. What did I just
- 51:08Speaker 3: hear Jason Kidd's going to be doing now?
- 51:10Speaker 7: ESPN.
- 51:11Speaker 2: ESPN. That's right. Studio analyst. So no Jason Kidd anymore.
- 51:16Speaker 3: Kyrie Irving's back, but the new head coach is Dusty May,
- 51:20Speaker 3: national champion coach with Michigan.
- 51:22Speaker 2: But you know, you worked with You worked with Rick Pitino, who.
- 51:26Speaker 3: Made the jump to the NBA and didn't have great
- 51:30Speaker 3: success two different times. It's a whole different thing being
- 51:33Speaker 3: a great college coach and being a great NBA coach.
- 51:36Speaker 3: What does Dusty May have in store for him as
- 51:38Speaker 3: he makes that transition?
- 51:39Speaker 7: Well, the first thing is that, James, with Kyrie Irving
- 51:42Speaker 7: being there, do you think the world's flat or round?
- 51:46Speaker 10: Right.
- 51:46Speaker 7: What do you think?
- 51:47Speaker 2: I mean, round.
- 51:48Speaker 4: Round, okay, good.
- 51:48Speaker 7: I'm a round earther. You're a round earther. Good, that's good.
- 51:51Speaker 2: We all know Kyrie is famously a flat earther.
- 51:54Speaker 7: Yes, it is. As are maybe some of our listeners.
- 51:56Speaker 7: Shout out to you guys. Okay, so that's the first thing.
- 51:59Speaker 7: All right, with Dusty May, national champions commendable. First thing
- 52:04Speaker 7: is right now is coaching staff. Lead assistant is Willie Green,
- 52:08Speaker 7: who is a five-year NBA head coach with the Pelicans,
- 52:11Speaker 7: former assistant with the Warriors and the Suns.
- 52:14Speaker 2: Long-time NBA player, too.
- 52:16Speaker 7: Very much. NBA players also on the staff are Garrett
- 52:20Speaker 7: Temple and Tyson Chandler.
- 52:21Speaker 4: Oh.
- 52:22Speaker 7: So they're on the coaching staff of the Dallas Mavericks.
- 52:25Speaker 7: All right, what are some adjustments? Here's the first thing.
- 52:28Speaker 7: As a college coach going to the NBA, the speed
- 52:31Speaker 7: and physicality of each game, you think you know about physicality,
- 52:35Speaker 7: you don't know until you see it up close every
- 52:38Speaker 7: single night. The second thing, there's more offensive half-court possessions.
- 52:43Speaker 7: So you got to be able to have some level
- 52:45Speaker 7: of execution of either set offense, and within that offense
- 52:49Speaker 7: is swinging the ball from side to side. The next
- 52:52Speaker 7: one adjustment is that most times in college basketball, again,
- 52:57Speaker 7: is always outlier. Most teams have, we'll say James, no
- 53:01Speaker 7: more than six or seven talented people where it's defined
- 53:05Speaker 7: who the starters are in the NBA. You have to
- 53:08Speaker 7: develop a skillful bench. So how do you get those
- 53:12Speaker 7: NBA bench guys? One committed and also development of, about
- 53:16Speaker 7: putting them in the game at a certain time. Next
- 53:19Speaker 7: part of it adjustments. Oh, by the way, If you're
- 53:22Speaker 7: really an elite college team like Michigan was last year,
- 53:25Speaker 7: you might play 37 to 40 games. In the NBA,
- 53:28Speaker 7: are you kidding me? You play 82 games. James, I
- 53:31Speaker 7: know college coaches and also first rookie players, they can't
- 53:35Speaker 7: believe how long this season is. Whoa a second. It's
- 53:38Speaker 7: only February 4th, and we already played. We still have
- 53:42Speaker 7: 44 games left in the season right now.
- 53:44Speaker 2: They call that the rookie wall, right, Gordy?
- 53:46Speaker 3: They get to game 30-something, 40-something, and all of a sudden.
- 53:50Speaker 2: They got no energy. They're like, hey, my body's not
- 53:53Speaker 2: built for this yet.
- 53:54Speaker 7: Very much. So there's more games, which means what? More
- 53:57Speaker 7: plane rides, which means what? More practices, which means what?
- 54:01Speaker 7: More individual workouts. So it's unbelievable the cumulative effect hazard
- 54:05Speaker 7: equals what? Burnout. As a young guy, suddenly you're fatigued.
- 54:12Speaker 7: From a coaching standpoint, you're tired mentally because you don't
- 54:16Speaker 7: used to how there's so many games and pressures on yourself.
- 54:21Speaker 7: And that's why it's so critical to sometimes walk away
- 54:26Speaker 7: from the game and practice and clear your head because
- 54:30Speaker 7: otherwise it's overwhelming.
- 54:32Speaker 2: Let me give a few, when you have a.
- 54:34Speaker 3: day when you don't have a game maybe in the
- 54:37Speaker 3: college in college realm certainly you're you're probably accustomed okay
- 54:41Speaker 3: obviously we're practicing we're not playing maybe there's maybe you
- 54:44Speaker 3: have more of those you know it's just a complete
- 54:46Speaker 3: day off we don't even need to practice today because
- 54:48Speaker 3: we we need a break from basketball you maybe more of.
- 54:51Speaker 7: That oh that's understatement the answer is yeah one of
- 54:54Speaker 7: jerry stone's uh greatest traits ever was he knew when
- 54:59Speaker 7: to read the locker room where where no practice today
- 55:04Speaker 7: and everyone else, and that means that no one comes
- 55:07Speaker 7: in to the office on the practice court.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Not even Carmelone lifting weights or anything.
- 55:13Speaker 7: No, nobody come in to give everybody in the organization
- 55:18Speaker 7: a mental health, see what I'm using, not physical health break,
- 55:21Speaker 7: a mental health break. So the guys who work in
- 55:24Speaker 7: the video room, do not come in. Everybody take a
- 55:28Speaker 7: day off. hang out with your new girlfriend, wannabe girlfriend,
- 55:31Speaker 7: old girlfriend, wife, wannabe wife, whatever it is, I don't
- 55:34Speaker 7: care who it is, is that hang out, get yourself
- 55:37Speaker 7: ready to go the next day, every once in a while.
- 55:40Speaker 7: And that's what you do, not all the time, but
- 55:42Speaker 7: it really helps so much. You learn that. Also add
- 55:45Speaker 7: to this, player-coach relationships. You're learning how to adapt to
- 55:50Speaker 7: coaching older people. Oh, it's easy when you're the voice
- 55:53Speaker 7: of authority and suddenly you, as a college coach, that
- 55:58Speaker 7: you're coaching someone 18, 19 years old. Yes, and the pros,
- 56:00Speaker 7: you do that also, rookies and first-year players, second-year players.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Nowadays, more than ever, you're coaching teenagers or 20-year-olds for sure.
- 56:08Speaker 7: But the better teams have guys, what, 38 years old?
- 56:11Speaker 1: Yep.
- 56:12Speaker 7: So you're 38 years old, so you're coaching older people,
- 56:16Speaker 7: and that's a whole different skill set is that the
- 56:21Speaker 7: question is, How do you coach these guys? You have
- 56:25Speaker 7: to be friendly towards them. That's the catch word. Friendly,
- 56:28Speaker 7: but you're not their friends. It's an unbelievable, invisible line.
- 56:33Speaker 7: And that's any business right now. So I'm talking about coaching.
- 56:36Speaker 7: I was a coach for 36 years. All right. So
- 56:38Speaker 7: I say it's firsthand as far as you're friendly with everybody,
- 56:43Speaker 7: but you're not friends. Next one about doing this is
- 56:46Speaker 7: that you're dealing with more damage control on a weekly basis.
- 56:51Speaker 7: There's more damage control because there's so much scrutiny by
- 56:55Speaker 7: the media that these people are known throughout the world.
- 57:00Speaker 7: So you're coaching, we'll say, Kyrie Irving. You're coaching Cooper Flagg,
- 57:05Speaker 7: who everybody knows who he is right now. He's only
- 57:08Speaker 7: 20 years young, but you're coaching him. You're coaching guys,
- 57:11Speaker 7: veteran players on that team and that there's more scrutiny.
- 57:14Speaker 7: And how do you deal with the outside influences in
- 57:17Speaker 7: the locker room and team practice? And the last point
- 57:20Speaker 7: about that is understanding this one. This is absolutely critical.
- 57:24Speaker 7: Understanding that the star players and or players are more
- 57:29Speaker 7: important and valued than the head coach by ownership.
- 57:33Speaker 6: Absolutely.
- 57:35Speaker 7: That the star Cooper flag is more valued than Dusty Baker.
- 57:40Speaker 7: I'm sorry, Dusty Baker. Dusty May. Dusty Baker. I love
- 57:44Speaker 7: Dusty Baker. I love him. All right, Dusty May.
- 57:46Speaker 3: He's more valuable. Is Najee Marshall still on the Mavs
- 57:49Speaker 3: this year?
- 57:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:51Speaker 3: There's different rules for Cooper Flagg than there is for
- 57:55Speaker 3: Najee Marshall.
- 57:56Speaker 7: Yeah, but also, but more importantly, is that from ownership
- 57:59Speaker 7: and management group, where if things get a little bit wayward,
- 58:03Speaker 7: you're our guy, you're our guy, you're our guy, until what?
- 58:06Speaker 7: You're not a guy anymore.
- 58:07Speaker 2: Right, oh, yeah.
- 58:08Speaker 7: And that was Jason Kidd. In other words, objectively, sitting
- 58:11Speaker 7: here in Salt Lake City downtown, talking to James Peterson
- 58:15Speaker 7: here on this wonderful Thursday afternoon at 12.07. No one
- 58:19Speaker 7: can tell me that Jason doesn't know basketball, Jason Kidd.
- 58:22Speaker 7: And when he played the game, he was what? Pass happy.
- 58:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:25Speaker 7: So that when your point guard's pass happy, the locker
- 58:28Speaker 7: room is happy. So Jason Kidd, NBA coach with the Bucs,
- 58:35Speaker 7: with the Nets, and with the Dallas Mavericks, they let
- 58:39Speaker 7: him go for whatever reason and that, Only we know
- 58:42Speaker 7: behind the doors what would actually happen is that, boy,
- 58:45Speaker 7: you can't say white, doesn't know basketball, and doesn't know white,
- 58:48Speaker 7: can't relate to people.
- 58:49Speaker 8: Really?
- 58:50Speaker 7: You're delusionary. Yes, he can.
- 58:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're absolutely right.
- 58:54Speaker 3: We're going to head to a break, but I remember
- 58:57Speaker 3: you telling a story, maybe more off-air than on-air, Gordy,
- 59:02Speaker 3: about how the Jazz, with Jerry Sloan as the head coach,
- 59:06Speaker 3: had a much more unique dynamic where it was, yeah,
- 59:10Speaker 3: Malone and Stockton, very important ownership, very important to Larry Miller,
- 59:13Speaker 3: but equally important was the head coach, and Jerry knew that, right?
- 59:18Speaker 3: And he was able to coach really hard because he
- 59:21Speaker 3: knew he had security to the point where, hey, if
- 59:25Speaker 3: these guys sour on me, ownership's going to back me.
- 59:28Speaker 8: Correct. Correct.
- 59:29Speaker 7: That's an understatement. And so 23 years later, oh, by
- 59:33Speaker 7: the way, in case you forget this, the Jazz went
- 59:35Speaker 7: to the playoffs 20 straight years in a row.
- 59:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:38Speaker 7: Unfortunately, the Jazz.
- 59:39Speaker 2: 23 out of 26 or whatever.
- 59:40Speaker 7: Very much. And let's point back to, if we get
- 59:42Speaker 7: the break, is that the Jazz probably would have been
- 59:45Speaker 7: champions if we didn't lose to the world's greatest player
- 59:49Speaker 7: of all time to do the greatest things to beat us.
- 59:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 59:52Speaker 7: So is any other great player probably a championship? Probably.
- 59:57Speaker 7: But That number 23, James, he wouldn't cooperate. How dare you?
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: Absolutely not. So on the other side, last segment with Gordy.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: We'll go another 20 minutes with him. Delta Center renovation,
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: downtown entertainment district renovation between City Creek and the Delta Center,
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: that whole block there, a few blocks if we're being honest,
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: Ryan Smith had a big announcement about that. Also, Gordy's
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: seen what the jazz arena looks like, the jazz configuration
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: looks like in the Delta Center now. I've just seen
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: the hockey configuration. Very curious as to Gordy's thoughts on that.
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: And we got his list. We're going to talk NBA
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: title contenders as well. All that and more on the
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: other side in about three minutes here on the Sean
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: O'Connell Show. James Peterson filling in. Gordy hanging out in
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: studio for another segment. Here on Utah's number one sports
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: talk and your home of the Utes, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell Show continues. We officially start hour two. I'm
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: not that different from Sean. I'm noticing a little long-winded, Gordy.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: At the end of the break. But that's okay.
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: Aladdin Industries sponsors our conversations with Gordy Chiesa on Tuesdays
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: and Thursdays every week. They are your VLUX Skylights dealer.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: We got Gordy in studio today for another 15-20 minutes here.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: Brought to you by Aladdin Industries. Also brought to you
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: by Uintah Golf by Worldwide Golf. Get there. Gordy, I
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: don't know if you saw this. Ryan Smith, there's been
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: a lot of talk over the last few years about
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: how Downtown is going to be reimagined by the Smith
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: Entertainment Group in partnership with the state legislature and the
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: mayor's office, Mayor Mendenhall. We now have some more detailed
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: renderings of what that's going to look like. Did you
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: see these?
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: Amazing.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's going to look amazing.
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: Just to give our listeners some details, you may have
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: missed it. It's on Ryan Smith's Twitter, by the way.
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: He's got the actual videos and pictures. you can see
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: what all this kinda describe it for you verbally here there's.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: Gonna be up.
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: It's gonna connect City Creek to the Delta Center right
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: and what that means is if you can picture or
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: fear you're working downtown you look outside your office window
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: you're working from home downtown you can your around the
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: salt palaces Delta Center area the salt palace kinda blocks
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: of the end of City Creek and to where the
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: Delta Center is, right? They're going to completely change the
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: Salt Palace so it doesn't just create a wall like that,
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: and they're going to change Japantown Street as well so
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: that from the end of City Creek, what's that Nordstrom
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: that's at the end there?
- 1:03:04Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: Right across from the Salt Palace from there to the
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: Delta Center is going to be a walkway. I don't
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: think any cars are going to be allowed on this.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: It's just going to be a pedestrian walkway that will
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: connect the two places there Abravanel Hall is also right
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: there next to the Salt Palace. That's going to get
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: revamped as well, right there in the middle. If you
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: haven't seen the video or the pictures, again, Ryan Smith's Twitter.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Has some great pictures there. It looks really cool, Gordy.
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: Also part of this, we heard the announcement about the
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: Live Nation downtown concert venue. Apparently, that's going to be
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: part of this big entertainment district as well, not that
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: far out.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: From the Delta Center. So you said you saw this.
- 1:03:49Speaker 7: Yeah, I did.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: And your thoughts on this reimagined downtown. We finally have
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: a picture of what it's going to look like.
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: Yeah, very much. It's commendable. It's going to be spectacular.
- 1:03:58Speaker 7: Just think about downtown where they're trying to attempt to do.
- 1:04:02Speaker 7: It's really a community hub. Yeah. No matter what, what
- 1:04:05Speaker 7: you're interested in, it's going to be there. And now
- 1:04:08Speaker 7: with the, with the walk inside walk, as far as
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: whether or not it doesn't matter. That's part of the
- 1:04:14Speaker 7: reason why. I think it's great. Most cities that have
- 1:04:19Speaker 7: a big-time feel have a vibrant downtown, just generally speaking.
- 1:04:24Speaker 7: And this will absolutely add to downtown and whether you're
- 1:04:27Speaker 7: a sports fan. whether you're a fan of music, whether
- 1:04:29Speaker 7: you're a fan of the shopping, whether you're a fan
- 1:04:32Speaker 7: of just hanging out, whatever it is, it'll be downtown.
- 1:04:34Speaker 7: I think it's going to be great. I moved there
- 1:04:36Speaker 7: in 1989, so I've seen the unbelievable growth in Salt
- 1:04:40Speaker 7: Lake City, and it's really great.
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: It's already, I imagine, changed so much, this part of
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: downtown in the time that you've been here.
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: City Creek, for example, it was... It was not there.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: It was the old DCMI Mall that was underground, right?
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: Right by Temple Square.
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: And now that's above ground, City Creek. So that's been
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: a big change to downtown since.
- 1:05:02Speaker 7: Very much.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: Since you moved here.
- 1:05:03Speaker 7: And the Delta Center didn't exist. It wasn't there.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: That's a good point. It was the Salt Palace.
- 1:05:08Speaker 6: No, it was.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: That they played, that Jazz played at.
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:05:10Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 1:05:11Speaker 7: Jazz played at Salt Palace... until, excuse me, my year's right.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: Was it 93?
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: No.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: 92, 93?
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: No, the first year at Delta Center was 1991, 92 season.
- 1:05:26Speaker 7: That was the first year. So the Jazz played in
- 1:05:30Speaker 7: the old Salt Palace, which held 12,844 people. I remember
- 1:05:35Speaker 7: the day Larry Miller said to me, I've got to
- 1:05:38Speaker 7: build an arena because John and Carl entering their prime
- 1:05:41Speaker 7: season There's so many clamoring for tickets. I've got to
- 1:05:44Speaker 7: build an arena. Thus, it became what? The Delta Center.
- 1:05:47Speaker 7: At that time, back in the late 80s, because of
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: the banking loan industry scandals, now one bank in America
- 1:05:53Speaker 7: was owning, was loaning money to people with a speculative investment.
- 1:05:58Speaker 7: Larry had to borrow $ 100 million out of Sumitomo Trust
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: in Tokyo via LA branch for the seed money to
- 1:06:06Speaker 7: build a Delta Center. That's fast forward. More importantly, Ryan
- 1:06:08Speaker 7: Smith right now is doing a great job as far
- 1:06:11Speaker 7: as making downtown such a different vibe for it. And again,
- 1:06:16Speaker 7: it's one guy did it this way, 35, 37 years later,
- 1:06:19Speaker 7: now it's a different viewpoint. Both were great.
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: Yeah, and we talked about City Creek is a newer
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: thing since the Delta Center was built, of course. Now
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: it feels like it's been around for a really long time,
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: but it's a lot newer than the Delta Center. But
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: between the Salt Palace and the Delta Center, that's basically
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: stayed the same.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: For most of that time.
- 1:06:41Speaker 7: Correct.
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: Right. So this is the first time that we're going
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: to see a drastically different look to downtown in what?
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: 40, 50 years.
- 1:06:52Speaker 8: Correct.
- 1:06:52Speaker 7: Yeah, very much.
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: And I love, and I love the, the way the renderings,
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: the plan that they have to make it look one
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: note on this to Aaron Mendenhall, the Salt Lake city mayor.
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: She's in this SCG video talking about, uh, the salt
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: palace in a Bravino hall in particular, uh, She says
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: that they expect 5 million visitors to the district every
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: year once it's going to be completed, which there's some
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: of us that are like, you know what?
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: It's already too crowded. But, hey, that's going to bring
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: in more.
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: You talked about a lot more vibrant downtown and obviously
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: more people coming in.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: That's more.
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: Tourism dollars and revenue for the city and for these
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: local business owners that are going to be part of this.
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: It can't be that bad.
- 1:07:37Speaker 7: It gives Salt Lake City an unbelievable big-town feel in
- 1:07:41Speaker 7: a great way, and that's the goal. And where people
- 1:07:44Speaker 7: of all different faiths, all different walks of life can
- 1:07:49Speaker 7: come together and enjoy a hockey game, a basketball game,
- 1:07:52Speaker 7: a concert. Just hanging out with family, new friends, old friends.
- 1:07:57Speaker 7: A lot of.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: Different shopping experience. Very much.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: They want the Salt Palace to be the number one
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: destination for national and international conventions after this. Which you're
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: going to have a hard time competing with Vegas on that,
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: just saying.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: But!
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: I love the ambition. I love the aspirations there. So
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: that's the latest on the downtown district. They're calling it
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: the Sports Entertainment Culture and Convention District. That's what they're
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: going to call this after it's completed. They did not
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: give a timeline. They just said it will be done
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: in advance of the 2034 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: So sometime.
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: In the next eight years, this will be finished, is
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: what they told us, which that's a long range, but
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: we'll see. Real quick, Gordy, I want to get into
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: some NBA title contenders here, our short list here. But
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: before we do that, speaking of the renovations and stuff,
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: you've been to Jazz NBA preseason games.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: I've been to.
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: Utah Mammoth, the opening night game, with the new arena configuration.
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: I'm really curious what you think of the Jazz configuration
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: with this new gondola seating, which look awesome for hockey.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: What's the look like for Jazz games? How do you
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: feel about it?
- 1:09:19Speaker 7: Spectacular it's great it's a great feel absolutely the jazz
- 1:09:23Speaker 7: have good players so it's going to be a great
- 1:09:25Speaker 7: home court wonderful advantage it looks great fans love it
- 1:09:31Speaker 7: looking at it and also reacting to it as far
- 1:09:34Speaker 7: as uh cheering for your the home team it's it's
- 1:09:37Speaker 7: wonderful so they've done a great job as far as
- 1:09:39Speaker 7: combining the newness of it with an old feel also
- 1:09:43Speaker 7: in a good way.
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: Still got that steep pitch that's always been unique to
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: the Delta Center.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: Over the years, which is awesome.
- 1:09:51Speaker 7: No, but the Delta Center, James, it's loud. It's a
- 1:09:54Speaker 7: loud arena. I'm simplifying it, but it helps the home team,
- 1:09:59Speaker 7: and the fans love it. Utah Jazz fans, they're number one.
- 1:10:02Speaker 7: They love their team. Objectively, I could say the Jazz,
- 1:10:06Speaker 7: the Spurs... the trailblazers, those smaller type markets, just generally speaking.
- 1:10:14Speaker 7: And also, it sounds weird saying it, James, Sacramento Kings, despite,
- 1:10:18Speaker 7: you know, ineptness, they have a great fan base. I
- 1:10:20Speaker 7: know it sounds weird saying it, but they actually do.
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: We saw that when they got back to the playoffs, what,
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: four years ago, and it was like, oh, this feels
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: like the old Arco Arena, the newer Golden One Center.
- 1:10:33Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: Feels like early 2000s Arco Arena. They still got a
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: great fan base. You're absolutely right about that. Yeah, so
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: I'm excited to get in. I'm going to go opening night.
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: It will be my first Jazz game. Gordy, excited to
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: see you there and see what that configuration looks like
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: with the new Delta Center. By the way, one more
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: phase of upper bowl renovation to be done in the
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: Delta Center. That's the other side of where the new
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: gondola seating is. That's the southwest side of the arena,
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: if I'm not mistaken. That's going to happen next. this
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: coming summer and then it'll be, it'll be absolutely complete. Uh,
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: so excited for that. Uh, Gordy, uh, NBA title contenders.
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: I wrote this short list for each conference, um, after
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: LeBron committed to sign with the Sixers, which kind of
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: signaled a Kauai's thing. Trade hadn't been finalized with the Raptors,
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: but we were, we were kind of assuming it would
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: eventually happen, uh, which it did. And so I was
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: assuming Kawhi on the Raptors at this point. Why don't
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: I give you my Eastern Conference first, and then maybe
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: you can give me yours.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Does that sound good, Gordon?
- 1:11:43Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: And then we'll do the West?
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: So I'm going to go.
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: I have five teams in the East that I think
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: could win a championship. There's more than that. They're going
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: to play for a championship in the playoffs. I only
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: think five of the eight that are going to play
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: for a championship as playoff teams have a truly realistic chance.
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: I will go five to one. So I've got Kawhi's Raptors.
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: New Look Raptors is five. Some people have them a
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: lot higher. I've got them at five. I've got the
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: Boston Celtics at four. And that's one you might be going,
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: you're crazy. They don't have Jalen Brown anymore. They signed
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: Mike Conley to help their depth at point guard, which
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: was a sneaky lack of depth for them this past season.
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: One of the reasons why they couldn't get out of
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: the first round, despite being a number two seed last year,
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: in addition to injuries. They signed Mitchell Robinson to shore
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: up their center position, their most glaring weakness on the
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: team last year. And Paul George can still play. I
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: know he's not Jalen Brown, but when he's healthy, he
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: can still be a good.
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: Number two scorer for them.
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: I'm not as low on the Celtics as some people
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: might be, Cordy. Number three, I have the Sixers. They
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: add LeBron. They trade for Jalen Brown. Tyrese Maxey is...
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: an all-world player, VJ Edgecombe, incredible rookie season last year,
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: expected to take another leap this year. And then it
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: all hinges on Joel Embiid's health. But even if Embiid
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: doesn't play a lot in the regular season, they should
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: still have a really high seed because everybody else on
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: the team is really good, Gordy. So I like this.
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: Sixers I have is my third best Eastern Conference NBA
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: title contender. Two, I have the defending champs. This is
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: where I have the Knicks. And you might go, If
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: someone's listening, might go, are you crazy? That is so
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: disrespectful to this Knicks team. They brought back almost everybody.
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: They replaced Mitchell Robinson with Andre Drummond, which, to use
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: your word, Gordy, yikes. I do not like that for
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: the Knicks. Their depth was one of the reasons why
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: they were able to get to the finals and then
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: beat the Spurs. Because they had a coach who was
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: willing to use their depth, too. That's going to really
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: hurt their depth. That's just one reason why I don't
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: have them, number one. Number one, I have the Indiana Pacers.
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: And I'm not sure anyone else who's not a Pacers
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: fan who follows the NBA, Gordy, probably has this Pacers team,
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: number one. But they get Tyrese Halliburton back. Zubats is
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: a big upgrade compared to Miles Turner off the bench.
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: They go 10, maybe 11 guys deep, too. They signed
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: Kelly Oubre. which was a big signing to help shore
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: their depth up. They still have all their great depth
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: pieces off the bench that they had when they got
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: to game seven of the finals two years ago. The
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: Pacers are my favorite to win the East this year.
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 1:14:36Speaker 7: Okay. I like it. Well said. I'm going to go
- 1:14:40Speaker 7: just quickly as far as, I'll just give you, without
- 1:14:43Speaker 7: going into detail, here's my top five in the East.
- 1:14:46Speaker 7: Number five, the Cavs. Number four, the Celtics. Number three,
- 1:14:52Speaker 7: Defending champ, Knicks. Number two, 76ers. Number one, the Heat.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: The Heat. The Heat.
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: I would love it if it's the Heat. I love
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: Giannis to the Heat. I don't know if they have
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: enough pieces around Giannis.
- 1:15:08Speaker 7: Sure.
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: Tell me why you have the Heat, number one.
- 1:15:11Speaker 7: Because, one, the coaching is terrific. They've been there before.
- 1:15:15Speaker 7: They battle. They play defense. They play fast offensively and defensively.
- 1:15:20Speaker 7: They've been overcoming, the last few years, they've been injured
- 1:15:24Speaker 7: as far as with key positions. I just like the
- 1:15:26Speaker 7: way they play. They have enough talent. And I believe
- 1:15:32Speaker 7: that coaching is so important. So what they're going to
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: probably try to use off the bench. You remember now,
- 1:15:40Speaker 7: they added Tim Hardaway. They added Klay Thompson as a starter.
- 1:15:44Speaker 7: So they start Davian Mitchell, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Giannis Dominguez.
- 1:15:49Speaker 7: And Bam Adebato. That's a very good starting team. But
- 1:15:54Speaker 7: they've done a good job with the bench. Adding Tim
- 1:15:56Speaker 7: Hardaway will help them. And Fontecchio. And they added Bobby Portis. So,
- 1:16:01Speaker 7: I like their coaching. I like their team. I like
- 1:16:03Speaker 7: Giannis being motivated. I like Pat Rowley as the main
- 1:16:07Speaker 7: guy that runs the organization. I think they're going to
- 1:16:12Speaker 7: have a great season. In the West, quickly.
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: Five, Rockets.
- 1:16:15Speaker 7: Four, Nuggets. Even though we love Jokic. Four, Nuggets.
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: Three, T-Wolves.
- 1:16:22Speaker 7: Okay. A mellow ball. Good. Anthony Edwards.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: Good.
- 1:16:26Speaker 7: They got some crew there right now.
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: Two, Spurs.
- 1:16:32Speaker 7: One, Thunder.
- 1:16:34Speaker 3: I feel like probably everyone in the world has those
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: last two, either Spurs one, Thunder two, or vice versa
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: the way you had it.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: I'm similar.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: I only have three teams in the West that I
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: think can truly win the championship, Gordy. Number three, the
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: Houston Rockets. I think Fred Van Vliet gives them an
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: adult in the room at point guard that they did
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: not have last year. And we saw that that was
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: we all learned just how glaring that was, especially in
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: that first round series loss to the Lakers, who had
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: nobody playing except for LeBron, it seemed like. And they
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: still they still lost to them. Fred Van Vliet's going
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: to make a huge difference for them. And then I
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: have the Spurs. I have the same as you.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: Spurs 2, Thunder 1, Jalen Williams, J. Will.
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: He's going to be healthy to start the season. If
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: he's healthy in that series against the Spurs, the Thunder
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: probably go back to the finals and maybe they're back-to-back champions, right?
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: If he's healthy, even with as bad as Chet Holmgren
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: played in that series against And if Chet Holmgren doesn't
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: get any better, if he's healthy, they ought to be
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: able to win the West this year, even with the
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: Spurs being improved in the offseason and another year older,
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: which is huge for a young team like that with
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: a lot of talent. But it's going to be close
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: between those two. It's like Thunder Spurs here and then
- 1:18:00Speaker 3: kind of a big gap. Then for me, it's the Rockets.
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: You have, who was your third team?
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: The T-Wolves.
- 1:18:05Speaker 7: T-Wolves, yeah. Nuggets four, Rockets five.
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:18:08Speaker 3: So I think the Nuggets are going to regress this year.
- 1:18:11Speaker 3: I think the Lakers are going to regress this year
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: a little bit. But we shall see how it all
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: plays out.
- 1:18:16Speaker 7: And that's the beauty of the whole thing in the NBA.
- 1:18:18Speaker 7: You think you know, you know nothing.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: Gordy, we're over time already, but we still have time
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: for your list, of course. Give us your list of
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: the day.
- 1:18:26Speaker 7: The list today, James, is the 15 greatest all-around NBA players. Yikes.
- 1:18:32Speaker 7: 15 greatest. Here's the criteria. So you're driving right now
- 1:18:36Speaker 7: on I-15. Don't be start wigging out when I get
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: these names out. So here's the criteria. One, scoring.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: Two, passing.
- 1:18:44Speaker 7: Three, defending, including shot blocking.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: Four, rebounding.
- 1:18:49Speaker 7: Five. end of game, clutch two-way plays. Six, longevity. Seven,
- 1:18:56Speaker 7: NBA titles. All right, you have to win a title.
- 1:18:58Speaker 7: As great as you are, certain players are, you got
- 1:19:01Speaker 7: to win at least one title. Here we go. Number 15,
- 1:19:04Speaker 7: Oscar Robinson. One title. Number 14, He plays for the
- 1:19:10Speaker 7: Rockets right now, Kevin Durant, two NBA titles. Number three,
- 1:19:16Speaker 7: former Rockets, the all-time leader in shot blocking and the
- 1:19:21Speaker 7: greatest ever stealer in the NBA for a big guy,
- 1:19:24Speaker 7: Hakeem Olajuwon, two NBA titles. Number 12, all-time, four NBA titles,
- 1:19:31Speaker 7: Shaquille O'Neal. Number 11, talked about it a second ago,
- 1:19:36Speaker 7: The Denver Nuggets, one NBA title, three-time MVP, Nikolai Jokic.
- 1:19:42Speaker 7: Number 10. One of the greatest ever clutch players, three championships,
- 1:19:48Speaker 7: Larry Bird. Number nine. The world's greatest shooter of all
- 1:19:52Speaker 7: time versus off the dribble versus what? Catch and shoot.
- 1:19:56Speaker 7: Four NBA titles at 6'3, 186 pounds. He's once in
- 1:20:01Speaker 7: a generational talent, Steph Curry. Number eight.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: Mr.
- 1:20:05Speaker 7: Fundamentals, five championships, Tim Duncan. Number seven, 11 titles in
- 1:20:13Speaker 7: 13 years, including being a player coach. We'll go later
- 1:20:17Speaker 7: on quickly about him. Number seven, all-time, Bill Russell. Number six,
- 1:20:21Speaker 7: five NBA titles. He did it with a smile, Magic Johnson.
- 1:20:25Speaker 7: Number five, all-time greatest player, five championships, He left his
- 1:20:29Speaker 7: way too early in life, Kobe Bryant. Number four, they
- 1:20:33Speaker 7: changed the rules to try to guard him in a
- 1:20:35Speaker 7: game because he's impossible to guard. One time someone said
- 1:20:38Speaker 7: that you don't pass the ball enough, led the NBA
- 1:20:40Speaker 7: in assists the following season, Wilt Chamberlain, with two championships,
- 1:20:44Speaker 7: four all-time. Number three, he did it with a skyhook.
- 1:20:48Speaker 7: He did it with goggles, six NBA titles, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
- 1:20:53Speaker 7: Number two, 24th year in the NBA coming up right now.
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: Still playing, Gordon.
- 1:21:00Speaker 7: Still playing. Plays for the 76ers. LeBron James with four
- 1:21:03Speaker 7: titles and the number one greatest player of all time.
- 1:21:07Speaker 7: Six NBA titles. There was nobody like him ever. Both
- 1:21:11Speaker 7: two-way sides of the ball. You know what I'm going
- 1:21:14Speaker 7: to say right now? His name is Michael Jordan with six. Quickly.
- 1:21:17Speaker 7: Who might on his list someday could be added? What
- 1:21:20Speaker 7: about Victor Wembeamba someday could be on this list and
- 1:21:24Speaker 7: Let's go back to Bill Russell.
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: Feels like only a matter of time.
- 1:21:26Speaker 7: Very much.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: All right, Bill Russell.
- 1:21:29Speaker 7: Here's Russell's stat line. I have to bring it up
- 1:21:31Speaker 7: because he's such a unique player. Five-time league MVP. He
- 1:21:37Speaker 7: was 10-0 in game sevens of playoffs, undefeated. He averaged 15.1
- 1:21:43Speaker 7: points per game in his career. He averaged rebounds, 22.3
- 1:21:47Speaker 7: rebounds per game, and.
- 1:21:51Speaker 7: They didn't keep block shots until 1973, 74 season. He
- 1:21:56Speaker 7: retired in 1969. But if they did, he'd average blocks
- 1:22:01Speaker 7: per game. James, I'm tempering my words here. At least
- 1:22:06Speaker 7: five blocks a game.
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: Thus.
- 1:22:10Speaker 7: That's my list of today. Please text James Peterson and
- 1:22:15Speaker 7: give James Peterson your list of the 15 greatest players.
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: If you do, we'll 877-353-0700. We might compare that a
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: little bit later in the show. Gordy, thank you so
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: much for coming in studio. So much fun. Have a
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: good rest of your day.
- 1:22:30Speaker 7: Thanks, James. Peace out.
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: All right, that's.
- 1:22:31Speaker 3: Gordy Chiesa brought to you by Aladdin Industries, your VLUX
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: Skylights dealer, and you went to golf by Worldwide Golf.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: Get there.
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: Daily Dump next, including a Thursday night football preview. Seahawks
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: and Broncos on the station tonight around 6 o'clock. That's
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: next during the Daily Dump on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: Feeling out of the loop? Let's catch up on today's
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: biggest headlines in the Daily News Dump, where we flush
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: out the biggest stories of the day on the Sean
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: O'Connell Show and Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: Brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Just
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: look for the truck with the duck.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: All right, Daily Dump. Brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating,
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: and Cooling.
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: Here on the Sean O'Connell Show, James Peterson filling in
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: for OC. He's in Chicago calling PFL fights. We've got
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: Tyson Whiting behind the glass, former voice of the Grizzlies,
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: now one of our producers. So happy to have Tyson
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: in today as well. I'm going to be real quick
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: with this because I spent a long time with Gordy Chiesa,
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: and you can't help but spend a long time with
- 1:23:45Speaker 3: Gordy Chiesa. It's so much fun to talk with the
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: former Utah Jazz assistant coach. Quickly, Utah Volleyball hosting number
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: 14 BYU tonight. We interviewed or OC interviewed Ashley West,
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: the outside and opposite side hitter for the Utes on
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: yesterday's show.
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: ESPN700sports. com.
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: Search the Sean O'Connell show wherever you get your podcasts
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: to check that interview out. 7 o'clock tonight, rivalry game.
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: It's a red out, so you got to wear red.
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: And we want to pack the Huntsman for this, for
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: the rivalry match. Go to utahtickets.com slash volleyball for tickets.
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: If you can't make it to the Huntsman for whatever reason,
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: you can watch it on ESPN +. Again, 7 o'clock,
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: rivalry game for Utah Volleyball hosting number 14, BYU.
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: This came through yesterday, Tyson.
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: Utah men's tennis is getting a new coach. Athletic director
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: Mark Harlan announced that they are parting ways with Roland,
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: and I believe it's Brottenu. I apologize if I didn't
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: get the name right there. Stan Von Burden has been
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: named the interim coach. Roland Brottenu spent 21 years with
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: Utah's program, including two years as a player, seven as
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: an assistant, and the last 12 as head coach. Four
- 1:25:09Speaker 3: NCAA tournament berths. one Pac-12 championship in his 12-year tenure.
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: That was in the last year of the Pac-12 in 2023.
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: So coaching change in men's tennis up on the Hill.
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: Big 12 announced a partnership. You may have seen this
- 1:25:25Speaker 3: earlier today, a partnership with Principal, you know, the retirement
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: savings company. Principal will have a jersey patch above the
- 1:25:32Speaker 3: Big 12 logo, Tyson, during basketball conference tournaments. That's men's
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: and women's. and various Olympic sports conference championship events. They're
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: going to, you're going to see the principal logo above
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: the big 12 logo, nothing in the press release about
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: the financials, even like how much money per school this
- 1:25:51Speaker 3: might be bringing in. That's honestly the most important thing, Tyson.
- 1:25:55Speaker 3: Like I, I don't care about where the Jersey that
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: there's going to be a Jersey patch, where it's going
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: to be. Just tell us how much money it's going
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: to make the conference, but they didn't include that in
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: the press release. If it's not going to make much money, Tyson, it's,
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: I don't really see the point of any of this.
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: If you're the big 12, who's like the third or
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: fourth best power for conference, you're trying to make money
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: to catch up to the big 10 and, and the sec.
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: The money's the most important thing. And I'd almost wonder
- 1:26:19Speaker 5: is where do you put the monster logo? Where do
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: you put some of the other sponsor logos? And are
- 1:26:23Speaker 5: they going to play on that computer screen basketball floor again?
- 1:26:26Speaker 5: Are they going to be on our traditional basketball floor
- 1:26:28Speaker 5: for the upcoming big 12 championships?
- 1:26:30Speaker 6: And while we're at it, where's the NASCAR logo going
- 1:26:32Speaker 6: to be?
- 1:26:33Speaker 5: Where's the, and obviously every Jersey manufacturer has got to
- 1:26:36Speaker 5: be on somewhere. Before you know it, I think they're
- 1:26:38Speaker 5: going to start producing and playing some of these games
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: on Sundays in racetracks because, after all, it looks like
- 1:26:45Speaker 5: they've got NASCAR suits with all the sponsors they're wearing.
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: You're absolutely right. It feels like it's headed that way.
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: It's nowhere near that, thankfully, yet. But I get where
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: you come from, tongue-in-cheek with that. It feels like it's
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: headed that way. So that's the other thing. You talk
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: about where's the Monster Energy logo because it's the Monster
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: Energy Big 12 football and basketball season, right, starting this year.
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: The picture that they have that shows the principal patch
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: above the Big 12 logo doesn't have the monster patch
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: anywhere near there. My guess is it's going to be
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: the principal, as I'm on YouTube pointing at my shirt.
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: It's going to be principal here, Big 12 logo here,
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: and just to my right, your left if you're looking
- 1:27:28Speaker 3: at me, of the Big 12 logo. is where that
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: green monster M is going to be like we've seen
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: on the football uniform so far.
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: So it's going to look pretty busy in that part of.
- 1:27:39Speaker 5: The Jersey or just what they do in soccer and
- 1:27:42Speaker 5: just take away the team name and team logos and
- 1:27:44Speaker 5: just put the sponsor right in the.
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: Middle of the chest there. Absolutely. Uh, so that's, uh,
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: that's the announcement.
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: Hopefully it brings in lots of revenue to schools like
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: Utah and, uh, and BYU, our local schools here, part
- 1:27:56Speaker 3: of the big 12. Uh, Quickly, a Thursday night football preview.
- 1:28:00Speaker 3: We've got this game on the station tonight. Tyson, Seattle Seahawks,
- 1:28:05Speaker 3: we are your home of the Seahawks this year at
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: the Denver Broncos. Coverage starting at 6 on your home
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: of the Seahawks right after the drive with Spence Check.
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: It's also, by the way, on the network, Utah's ESPN
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: radio network on ESPN The Fan.
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: That's 103.9 and 98.3 FM.
- 1:28:25Speaker 3: You can hear the Denver Broncos home call if you're
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: a Broncos fan. So no need to go anywhere else
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: on your radio dial except for Utah's ESPN radio network
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: either here at ESPN 792.1 FM to hear the Seahawks
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: home call. ESPN The Fan on 103.9 and 98.3 FM
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: to hear the Broncos home call.
- 1:28:46Speaker 6: We got all bases covered here.
- 1:28:48Speaker 5: We got Dave Logan on 960 there, and we got
- 1:28:51Speaker 5: Steve Rabel here on ESPN 700, so you can have
- 1:28:54Speaker 5: your pick as to what your flavor is for that game. And, hey,
- 1:28:57Speaker 5: Broncos are going to need to get off to a
- 1:28:59Speaker 5: quicker start. They have really struggled offensively, especially in first
- 1:29:02Speaker 5: half of games. Their defense has done a good job
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: keeping a minute. But, boy, Denver, I think a lot
- 1:29:07Speaker 5: of people thought that this was going to be a
- 1:29:09Speaker 5: Super Bowl contender, and it's really not shown to be,
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: even though their schedule has been pretty tough early in
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: the season.
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: And then on the other side with the Seahawks, not undefeated, right?
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: They've got some losses most recently to their rivals, the
- 1:29:22Speaker 3: San Francisco 49ers. We know OC's really happy about that.
- 1:29:26Speaker 3: on Sunday in Seattle, but you had Sam Darnold leave
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: early in the season opener against the Patriots.
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: They ended up winning that game. Anyway, Sam Darnold's back.
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: You had the, the, all the turnovers in the game
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: again in Washington, but I mean, all things considered, you're
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: not in first place if you're the Seahawks, but you're,
- 1:29:48Speaker 3: you're about where you want to be. As far as
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: how you're playing, you just wish you could have won, uh,
- 1:29:53Speaker 3: a couple more of those games you're undefeated, but like,
- 1:29:56Speaker 3: I don't know that you have that many concerns. If
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: you're a Seahawks fan, there's certainly not the concerns that
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: you have as a Broncos fan that you just outlined
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: where offensively they wait until like the third quarter to
- 1:30:07Speaker 3: get going.
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: And Sean Payton finally taking over the play calling duties,
- 1:30:10Speaker 5: which I think we all knew the minute that Sean
- 1:30:13Speaker 5: Payton took away the play calling duties from himself, gave
- 1:30:16Speaker 5: it to the Davis web. I think we knew it
- 1:30:18Speaker 5: was only a matter of time before Sean Payton was
- 1:30:20Speaker 5: going to take it over again. As for Seattle, uh,
- 1:30:22Speaker 5: I think we're starting to see exactly what kind of
- 1:30:25Speaker 5: an impact Kenneth Walker had in that lineup, and losing
- 1:30:29Speaker 5: that guy and obviously seeing the impact he's had with
- 1:30:31Speaker 5: the Chiefs so far this season, I think that's a
- 1:30:33Speaker 5: bigger loss than what the Seahawks originally thought.
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: Yeah, you're absolutely right about that, but I still think
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: they're playing pretty well, all things considered. I would feel
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: pretty good about tonight's game if I'm Seattle, even though
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: the game's in Denver, and Denver's a talented team, and
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: I would feel pretty good about them doing a really
- 1:30:53Speaker 3: nice title defense and getting into the playoffs this year
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: if you're a Seahawks fan.
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: We'll see how tonight goes.
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: Again, coverage starting at 6, Seahawks home call here on
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: your home of the Seahawks, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM
- 1:31:08Speaker 3: right after the drive and Spence check. It's more NFL news, Tyson.
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: Did you see the videos of after the overtime game
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: on Monday Night Football?
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a.
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: Little bit of a ruckus there, and some punches were thrown,
- 1:31:24Speaker 5: and there was a two-game suspension, although it looks like
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: with Aliark-Jackson, that's been reduced from two games to one. But,
- 1:31:32Speaker 5: you know, that's one of those that every now and then,
- 1:31:34Speaker 5: it's not like you see it after every game, but
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: every now and then, you know, people are shaking hands
- 1:31:38Speaker 5: and having a good time, but it's a little bit
- 1:31:41Speaker 5: too fired up, and maybe a couple words are exchanged,
- 1:31:43Speaker 5: and before you know it, you've got a fight to
- 1:31:45Speaker 5: break up. Yeah, so I believe it's a Larrick-Jackson, a Larrick-Jackson,
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: however you say that, The Rams offensive lineman, he punched
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: Bradley Chubb.
- 1:31:55Speaker 3: And I know there's videos of people doing it. They
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: put it in super slow-mo, and it makes it look
- 1:31:59Speaker 3: like maybe he had an open.
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: hand there. And they, they call that a mush, not
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: a punch, whatever.
- 1:32:04Speaker 5: Maybe that's where it goes from two games to one
- 1:32:07Speaker 5: game and close the fist.
- 1:32:08Speaker 3: Maybe because it, maybe because it may have been an
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: open fist or open palm there.
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:32:15Speaker 3: Maybe Brett, they were able to prove that Bradley Chubb
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: said something that was way over the line. And they're like, okay,
- 1:32:21Speaker 3: you still shouldn't do that to retaliate, but we get
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: why you felt provoked.
- 1:32:26Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 1:32:27Speaker 3: Uh, it looked like a, it looked like a punch
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: to Bradley Chubb, Bradley Chubb. Certainly he, he admitted that
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: he initiated the trash talk after the game, the conversation there,
- 1:32:38Speaker 3: and they were trash talking throughout the game and he
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: was just continuing it, but still like you, you can't
- 1:32:43Speaker 3: punch a guy open fist or not the way that
- 1:32:45Speaker 3: he did, especially it gets caught on national TV cameras
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: as ESPN SVP was still doing his post game show.
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: So they're still panning the field.
- 1:32:54Speaker 5: I was listening to the Westwood one call and they
- 1:32:55Speaker 5: were actually in the, uh, In the middle of an interview,
- 1:32:58Speaker 5: and they're talking to Rosu, who blocked the kick. Yeah, Rousseau.
- 1:33:05Speaker 5: And so he had to stop the interview. It's like,
- 1:33:07Speaker 5: go break up a fight, and resume the interview. One
- 1:33:10Speaker 5: other big NFL story that's come out over the last hour,
- 1:33:12Speaker 5: Jalen Hurts, the Eagles quarterback, has been ruled out for
- 1:33:16Speaker 5: this upcoming game against the Panthers with a blood clot.
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: Yikes, blood clot.
- 1:33:20Speaker 6: So Jalen Hurts is out for the Eagles.
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: That is scary.
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: To have a blood clot be the reason why, and
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: that's a big loss for the Eagles who already have,
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: they just traded their center away. They've made some moves
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: that it looks like they're trying to dial things back,
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: trying to maybe start a rebuild here, but who knows,
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: and they certainly don't have much of a chance against
- 1:33:48Speaker 3: what's a sneaky good Panthers team, Devin Lloyd. Former Ute
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: leading things on the defensive end, looking like maybe one
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: of the best linebackers in the league, if not the
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: best linebacker in the league so far.
- 1:33:59Speaker 5: Looks like Tanner McKee is going to get the start
- 1:34:01Speaker 5: for the Eagles.
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: Tanner McKee. We know him from Stanford. He played Utah
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: a few times.
- 1:34:06Speaker 5: Well, BYU fans, because I think he's a member of
- 1:34:08Speaker 5: the church, I think BYU fans for many years thought
- 1:34:10Speaker 5: that he was going to end up as a cougar.
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: Talented guy, but never really... put it all together at Stanford.
- 1:34:17Speaker 3: And it says something about his talent that he's been
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: able to stick as a backup for the Eagles for
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: what's his third or fourth year now.
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: But he's no Jalen Hurts.
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: And so that's going to, you like this? You ready
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: for this, Tyson? It's going to hurt the Eagles to
- 1:34:34Speaker 3: not have Jalen Hurts at quarterback.
- 1:34:37Speaker 6: Good one, James.
- 1:34:39Speaker 3: That's the kind of thing that OC would roll his
- 1:34:41Speaker 3: eyes and say, okay, moving on. Um, Oh, see, he's
- 1:34:45Speaker 3: not here though. So you're going to get more of
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: that as I fill in for him today, Tyson, we've
- 1:34:51Speaker 3: got a playoff baseball going on right now, early game,
- 1:34:55Speaker 3: trying to avoid some weather in Cleveland and we got
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: a score update for us.
- 1:35:01Speaker 5: It looks like we're in the bottom of the sixth
- 1:35:02Speaker 5: inning guardians lead the race three to two PD Halpin
- 1:35:06Speaker 5: had a two run Homer for Cleveland to give him
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: a lead. And so Cleveland to Tampa, uh, Cleveland three,
- 1:35:13Speaker 5: Tampa two.
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: That game's in the bottom of the sixth inning. Yeah,
- 1:35:16Speaker 3: so Cleveland is hitting. This game is at Progressive Field
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: in Cleveland. Donovan Mitchell in attendance. We saw him in
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: the pregame wearing his Guardians gear. Real quick, because we'll
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: head to a break, but there's Brewers and Dodgers tonight.
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: Brewers might sweep the Dodgers tonight. That's at six. We
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: were talking off-air, Tyson. It feels like, assuming the Brewers
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: close out the Dodgers, whether it's tonight or some other night,
- 1:35:49Speaker 3: it feels like we're going to have, whether it's the
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: Guardians or the Rays winning in the AL, if it's
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: the Brewers on the other side, you might have the
- 1:35:57Speaker 3: Spider-Man meme where everyone's pointing at each other, looking in
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: a mirror at each other. It feels like the Dodgers
- 1:36:04Speaker 3: are the only team that's not like the other teams
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: that are playing right now. Rays, Guardians, Brewers, they're not
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: about hitting home runs every time. They're about making contact,
- 1:36:15Speaker 3: getting infield hits, putting pressure on pitchers, and then on
- 1:36:21Speaker 3: their side of things, pitching really well and deep with
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: their starters and great bullpens. It feels like we're going
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: to have two mirror images in the World Series if
- 1:36:30Speaker 3: the Brewers finish off the Dodgers like we expect them
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: to and whoever comes out of the American League.
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: And it goes to show you it doesn't really matter
- 1:36:38Speaker 5: what kind of payroll you have. the Brewers, the Rays,
- 1:36:41Speaker 5: the Guardians, they seem to be clubs that have to
- 1:36:45Speaker 5: be complete teams. One through nine have guys that can
- 1:36:47Speaker 5: make contact up and down the lineup. Obviously, in this
- 1:36:51Speaker 5: day and age, the big money teams don't necessarily spend
- 1:36:54Speaker 5: a whole lot of cash on bullpens. All three of
- 1:36:57Speaker 5: those teams outside of the Dodgers that are still playing
- 1:36:59Speaker 5: are outstanding in the bullpen. Especially when starting pitchers are
- 1:37:02Speaker 5: only going four and five innings like they are anymore,
- 1:37:05Speaker 5: your relief pitching is going to make a big difference.
- 1:37:07Speaker 5: So far, That's been huge for all three teams outside
- 1:37:11Speaker 5: of the Dodgers. They're still alive. It almost seems like
- 1:37:15Speaker 5: those teams, it really doesn't matter how much money you
- 1:37:18Speaker 5: make or how much money you spend.
- 1:37:20Speaker 6: It's really how much front offices know what they're doing.
- 1:37:24Speaker 5: Brewers, Guardians, and Rays are three front offices that really
- 1:37:27Speaker 5: know what they're doing, and that's why they're still playing
- 1:37:29Speaker 5: this time of year.
- 1:37:30Speaker 3: Absolutely, but hey, Brewers still got to close out those Dodgers.
- 1:37:34Speaker 3: They're up 3-0. They haven't won the fourth game yet.
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: Game four is tonight going for a sweep, 6 o'clock
- 1:37:42Speaker 3: on Fox.
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: One more break here.
- 1:37:44Speaker 3: We'll discuss maybe a little. We got Tyson Whiting, former
- 1:37:49Speaker 3: voice of the Grizzlies here. Lots of hockey knowledge on
- 1:37:52Speaker 3: the other side of the glass here in our ESPN
- 1:37:55Speaker 3: 700 Murdoch Hyundai Studios, Murdoch Chevy Studios.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: Let me get a little preview of the.
- 1:38:00Speaker 3: Mammoth game tonight as they visit Connor McDavid and the
- 1:38:04Speaker 3: Edmonton Oilers.
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: We'll do that for a few minutes.
- 1:38:07Speaker 3: Next, in about three minutes here on the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 1:38:10Speaker 3: James Peterson filling in on Utah's number one sports talk,
- 1:38:12Speaker 3: your home of the youths and your home for football,
- 1:38:15Speaker 3: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:38:18Speaker 7: I'm being haunted.
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: All right. I know it's one o'clock. Stay with me here.
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: We're still in hour two. All right. This is Radio Magic.
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: We're ending hour two.
- 1:38:41Speaker 3: We'll begin hour three a little bit late in classic
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell Show style.
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: James Peterson filling in. By the way, this song.
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: Is uh something in my house feeling by dead or
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: alive shout out to texter 1466 yesterday who uh requested
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: this one as we're gonna play we're gonna try to
- 1:39:02Speaker 3: play at least one halloween spooky type song throughout the
- 1:39:07Speaker 3: month of october the day before halloween just get ready
- 1:39:10Speaker 3: for a lot of halloween music all right it's a
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: friday Um, but until then we'll do, we'll do one
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: a day. Today's is the something in my house feeling
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: by dead or alive. Shout out to texture 1466 who
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: requested that, um, yesterday.
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: And that, that was for you.
- 1:39:27Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: And you know what? I hadn't heard that one before.
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: Kind of a banger Tyson. All right.
- 1:39:32Speaker 6: That's pretty good. Halloween produces some really good music.
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: It does. It does.
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: Uh, to close out our two, as we technically say,
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: as you look at the clock, have begun Hour 3.
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: Radio Magic, stay with me here. Tyson Whiting, former voice
- 1:39:48Speaker 3: of the Utah Grizzlies. You know he knows hockey, guys. Tyson,
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: the Mammoth, off to a great start, visiting another team
- 1:39:57Speaker 3: off to a really good start, and who just recently
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: went to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals. Lost in seven games,
- 1:40:04Speaker 3: lost in six games, just right there, close to a
- 1:40:07Speaker 3: Stanley Cup. Edmonton Oilers, who feature only Connor freaking McDavid,
- 1:40:13Speaker 3: all right? This game's in Edmonton, 7 o'clock tonight. Utah
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: 16 over the air if you got the antenna. Mammoth Plus,
- 1:40:21Speaker 3: you're watching it otherwise. If you're out of market, you
- 1:40:24Speaker 3: can catch it on ESPN Plus as well, but most
- 1:40:27Speaker 3: of you are going to be watching it on one
- 1:40:28Speaker 3: of those other two channels. Tyson, what do you expect
- 1:40:32Speaker 3: tonight in Edmonton from this Mammoth team who's looking really
- 1:40:36Speaker 3: good to start the season?
- 1:40:37Speaker 6: The Mammoth are 5-2. They're 3-2 on the road.
- 1:40:40Speaker 5: A lot of their goals on Tuesday against Toronto in
- 1:40:42Speaker 5: the 5-4 victory came in the transition game where they
- 1:40:45Speaker 5: utilized defense, turned defense into offense, showed a lot of
- 1:40:50Speaker 5: patience in open ice, and were able to come away
- 1:40:52Speaker 5: with some big goals. This is an interesting matchup because Edmonton,
- 1:40:55Speaker 5: after losing their regular season opener in overtime to Vancouver,
- 1:40:59Speaker 5: they have won five in a row, and after allowing
- 1:41:01Speaker 5: 13 goals in the first two games, the Oilers have
- 1:41:04Speaker 5: only allowed five goals in the last four games, and
- 1:41:08Speaker 5: that's certainly big because you've got Connor McDavid, who's got
- 1:41:11Speaker 5: 15 points in his last five games. You've got Leon Dreisaitl,
- 1:41:15Speaker 5: year in and year out, scores 40 to 50 goals.
- 1:41:18Speaker 5: Edmonton's really working on building a little bit of depth,
- 1:41:20Speaker 5: and Mike Babcock is trying to get that defensive identity
- 1:41:23Speaker 5: that's going to get them working in the playoffs. And
- 1:41:26Speaker 5: so Edmonton's a club that's really played some good hockey
- 1:41:30Speaker 5: to start the season.
- 1:41:31Speaker 6: Edmonton likes to play fast.
- 1:41:32Speaker 5: Mammoth like to play fast, and as a result, I
- 1:41:35Speaker 5: think it's going to be a very exciting game, not
- 1:41:38Speaker 5: only tonight, but Saturday night.
- 1:41:39Speaker 6: They're playing a home-and-home.
- 1:41:40Speaker 5: Over a three-day stretch, and so Saturday night, the Oilers
- 1:41:44Speaker 5: are going to be at Delta Center. I know there's
- 1:41:46Speaker 5: going to be so many games on Saturday night, but
- 1:41:50Speaker 5: that would be a fun one to watch because Edmonton
- 1:41:52Speaker 5: likes to play fast. Mammoth like to play fast. Both
- 1:41:55Speaker 5: teams' goaltenders haven't been outstanding to start the year, so
- 1:42:00Speaker 5: I think we're going to get a couple high-scoring, exciting games.
- 1:42:02Speaker 6: Probably 5-4 on Tuesday night.
- 1:42:05Speaker 5: We're probably going to see a couple 5-4 type of
- 1:42:07Speaker 5: games when the Mammoth take on the Oilers in the home-and-home.
- 1:42:10Speaker 5: They're on the road Thursday, and they'll be at Delta
- 1:42:12Speaker 5: Center on Saturday.
- 1:42:14Speaker 3: If you like offense, you want to tune into these games.
- 1:42:17Speaker 3: Whether you go to the Delta Center on Saturday, watch
- 1:42:20Speaker 3: it on TV, and tonight you're watching it on TV
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: because I doubt many of you are making the trek
- 1:42:25Speaker 3: across the border. To Edmonton to watch tonight. Maybe some
- 1:42:28Speaker 3: of you are. Shout out to you guys. That'd be
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: quite the trip to go to. And any chance, like
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: on Saturday when Edmonton's in town, any chance you get
- 1:42:38Speaker 3: to see an all-time great. And Edmonton's got two of them, right?
- 1:42:43Speaker 3: But particularly Connor McDavid. I mean, you want to take
- 1:42:46Speaker 3: advantage of that, right, Tyson?
- 1:42:48Speaker 5: It's certainly worth it every time. And interestingly enough, Saturday
- 1:42:50Speaker 5: night you've got the superstars in town. But this is
- 1:42:52Speaker 5: almost like a superstar month. is on Monday, Sidney Crosby,
- 1:42:56Speaker 5: Evgeny Malkin, and Chris Letang, and the Pittsburgh Penguins are
- 1:42:59Speaker 5: going to be in town. And then Tampa comes to
- 1:43:01Speaker 5: town later on next week, and they've got some superstars
- 1:43:04Speaker 5: with Vasilevsky and Nett, and Nikita Kucherov, and former Utah
- 1:43:08Speaker 5: Grizzly legend, Charles Edward Das, who's on that Tampa Bay
- 1:43:11Speaker 5: roster as well. And then Minnesota, the last home game
- 1:43:15Speaker 5: in October, they've got Kaprizov and Quinn Hughes, and Minnesota's
- 1:43:19Speaker 5: got some pretty good stars as well. So, It's almost
- 1:43:21Speaker 5: like a superstar month over at Delta center with the
- 1:43:23Speaker 5: quality of superstars coming to town over the next few
- 1:43:27Speaker 5: home games.
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: So got their hands full over the next few weeks
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: here against facing off against some really good players, teams
- 1:43:37Speaker 3: with really good players. And it starts tonight against the
- 1:43:40Speaker 3: Edmonton Oilers real quick before we break Tyson and we'll
- 1:43:44Speaker 3: get to addition with.
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: Devin, the replay of that.
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: We had it live yesterday because of a, Different schedule
- 1:43:51Speaker 3: because of fall break for Devin this week, so we
- 1:43:53Speaker 3: did it live on the show yesterday. We'll bring it
- 1:43:55Speaker 3: back to you on the other side of this segment
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: coming up in a few minutes here. Before we do that, though, Tyson,
- 1:44:02Speaker 3: you mentioned Mike Babcock. controversial hire and kind of a
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: controversial firing.
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: Was it Chris Knobloch? Did I get that right?
- 1:44:12Speaker 5: Chris Knobloch was with Edmonton and it looked like he
- 1:44:14Speaker 5: was doing a pretty good job.
- 1:44:15Speaker 3: Guided them to back-to-back Stanley Cup final appearances. Losses, but
- 1:44:20Speaker 3: still three straight playoff appearances. They turned to the veteran
- 1:44:25Speaker 3: Mike Babcock, but this is a guy who in his
- 1:44:28Speaker 3: last couple of stops, not been very well liked. Had
- 1:44:31Speaker 3: some controversy follow him. It looks like They don't have
- 1:44:35Speaker 3: any regulation losses this year, as you mentioned. They've won
- 1:44:39Speaker 3: five in a row. It looks like, for now, seems
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: to be working really well. But I just want to
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: get your thoughts on that move, kind of controversially hiring
- 1:44:49Speaker 3: a guy like Mike Babcock, who has won cups before, right?
- 1:44:54Speaker 6: He's won one cup, and he's been to three Stanley
- 1:44:57Speaker 6: Cup finals.
- 1:44:58Speaker 3: But he's had, like I said, a controversial recent history
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: as a coach.
- 1:45:04Speaker 5: Well, he was hired by Columbus, and then they fired
- 1:45:07Speaker 5: him before he coached the game. I think he was
- 1:45:08Speaker 5: going through players' phones and whatever, just kind of weird stuff.
- 1:45:12Speaker 5: And then everybody comes out with these Mike Babcock stories
- 1:45:15Speaker 5: about how much they hated playing for him. And so
- 1:45:17Speaker 5: you thought that Mike Babcock was done, that you hoped
- 1:45:20Speaker 5: they'd saved enough money that he can just kind of
- 1:45:22Speaker 5: retire and maybe get a TV job. But even then,
- 1:45:26Speaker 5: it seemed like that would be kind of murky because
- 1:45:29Speaker 5: it seemed like a lot of people that had been
- 1:45:30Speaker 5: around Mike Babcock don't necessarily like him. But the Oilers
- 1:45:33Speaker 5: are betting on his track record of winning. After all,
- 1:45:36Speaker 5: his first year as an NHL head coach was with
- 1:45:39Speaker 5: the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and they went to the
- 1:45:40Speaker 5: finals in 2003. And almost immediately, he built a reputation
- 1:45:45Speaker 5: as being one of the top coaches in the National
- 1:45:47Speaker 5: Hockey League. Had that good run with Detroit, and then
- 1:45:50Speaker 5: even in Toronto, he won quite a bit there, even
- 1:45:53Speaker 5: though it wasn't necessarily playoff success. He does have a
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: winning record in the playoffs. And so they're betting on
- 1:45:59Speaker 5: Mike Babcock winning. being able to relate to the young players,
- 1:46:02Speaker 5: in particular, relate to their superstars. And if the superstars
- 1:46:05Speaker 5: buy in, they think that they've found the missing ingredient,
- 1:46:08Speaker 5: the missing piece to winning a Stanley Cup. Obviously, for Edmonton,
- 1:46:12Speaker 5: goaltending is going to be something to watch out for.
- 1:46:15Speaker 5: They're more of an offensive-style team, so they kind of
- 1:46:18Speaker 5: leave the goaltending hanging to dry a little bit. And
- 1:46:20Speaker 5: so that's going to be a big question for them
- 1:46:22Speaker 5: down the stretch. But Edmonton certainly is a fascinating club
- 1:46:25Speaker 5: because they do have the star power to go all
- 1:46:27Speaker 5: the way.
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: Absolutely. So, again, Mammoth.
- 1:46:30Speaker 3: In Edmonton tonight, taking on Connor McDavid, Leon Dreisaitl, and
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: the Oilers. 7 o'clock, Mammoth Plus or Utah 16. If
- 1:46:41Speaker 3: you're out of market, listen on the app. You'll be
- 1:46:44Speaker 3: able to watch it on ESPN Plus as well. Dishing
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: with Devin, a replay of that. If you missed it yesterday,
- 1:46:51Speaker 3: want to hear it again today. If you heard it yesterday,
- 1:46:53Speaker 3: want to hear it again today. That's next, brought to
- 1:46:56Speaker 3: you by Colgan Water, Salt Lake City, Valley Plumbing, Heating,

- 1:47:11Speaker 2: It's time to talk to Utah quarterback Devin Dampier.
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: This is Dishing with Devin on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: Brought to you by Colligan Water, Salt Lake City, America

- 1:47:25Speaker 1: here's OC with Ute Star signal caller Devin Dampier on
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: your home of the Utes and your home for football.

- 1:47:36Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:47:38Speaker 9: Welcome in QB number one at the University of Utah,
- 1:47:41Speaker 9: Devin Dampier, signal caller leader for a 5-0 Utah football team.
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: Dev, welcome to the show once again. How are you?
- 1:47:51Speaker 4: Man, doing good, doing good.
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: How does it feel to be 5-0?
- 1:47:54Speaker 10: You know, I would say it feels just about right, honestly.
- 1:48:02Speaker 10: It's Confidence I got in my team, this is a
- 1:48:05Speaker 10: position where we've talked.
- 1:48:07Speaker 8: About being at, and we're just going week by week,
- 1:48:10Speaker 8: and we're doing what we said we would do.
- 1:48:15Speaker 9: We'll look back at Kansas a little bit, look forward
- 1:48:17Speaker 9: to Colorado here in just a second. But, uh, did the,
- 1:48:21Speaker 9: did the Jayhawks surprise you at all?
- 1:48:25Speaker 8: Um, no, I thought the Jayhawks were a pretty good
- 1:48:27Speaker 8: team when we went in there. I mean, they competed
- 1:48:29Speaker 8: pretty well with, uh, even their two losses before us,
- 1:48:33Speaker 8: you know, they, they competed pretty well.
- 1:48:34Speaker 4: With them also.
- 1:48:35Speaker 8: So, um, uh, I knew it was going to be
- 1:48:39Speaker 8: a game, and I'm just happy how it ended up
- 1:48:43Speaker 8: turning out.
- 1:48:45Speaker 9: You finished the game 23 of 30, 238 yards, three touchdowns,
- 1:48:47Speaker 9: and an interception. I wanted to talk to you about
- 1:48:53Speaker 9: the efficiency of this offense, especially in first possessions of
- 1:48:57Speaker 9: the game.
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: I'm sure you're aware of this.
- 1:48:59Speaker 9: You all have scored a touchdown on all five of
- 1:49:01Speaker 9: your opening possessions. As a team, you've only trailed, I think,
- 1:49:05Speaker 9: for four and a half minutes, and that's because somebody
- 1:49:08Speaker 9: else got the ball first.
- 1:49:11Speaker 2: When we're talking about that, a hot.
- 1:49:13Speaker 9: Start and starting off the right way with a scoring
- 1:49:16Speaker 9: drive and a touchdown scoring drive, not just a field goal,
- 1:49:19Speaker 9: what kind of tone does that set for all of
- 1:49:21Speaker 9: you in knowing that your preparation was done the right
- 1:49:25Speaker 9: way and knowing that the game's going to go fine?
- 1:49:29Speaker 8: Yeah, and, you know, that's something that doesn't get talked
- 1:49:32Speaker 8: about a lot, but, yeah, I do love the way
- 1:49:34Speaker 8: we start on both sides of the ball. You know,
- 1:49:37Speaker 8: normally when defense goes out there first, they normally get
- 1:49:40Speaker 8: us a good position where maybe we're starting at the 35. So,
- 1:49:45Speaker 8: I mean, they shorten the distance for us to have
- 1:49:46Speaker 8: to march down there. And just as offense, you know,
- 1:49:49Speaker 8: we take it a little bit personal when a team
- 1:49:51Speaker 8: feels good about giving us the ball first. You know,
- 1:49:54Speaker 8: a lot of teams do that, so their defense gets
- 1:49:55Speaker 8: out there and gets a stop.
- 1:49:57Speaker 4: But we definitely take it personal. I'm like, all right, better.
- 1:50:00Speaker 8: If you want our offense out there first, we're going
- 1:50:02Speaker 8: to make you pay for it.
- 1:50:03Speaker 4: That's just the mentality.
- 1:50:05Speaker 9: I like that that's the mentality because, that's not why
- 1:50:08Speaker 9: they're doing it. They're doing it so they can get
- 1:50:10Speaker 9: the first possession of the second half, but you guys
- 1:50:13Speaker 9: turn it into motivation.
- 1:50:15Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: All right. So tell me what you saw from Ricky Johnson.
- 1:50:22Speaker 9: It went in practice and in the game this week
- 1:50:25Speaker 9: to where you felt like maybe this was going to
- 1:50:27Speaker 9: be his breakout day.
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: And it was five catches, 104 yards and a touchdown.
- 1:50:33Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, Ricky's been proving himself for a long
- 1:50:35Speaker 8: time now. I'm pretty sure there's an interview of me
- 1:50:38Speaker 8: saying Ricky was someone that I thought was impressive in
- 1:50:43Speaker 8: the spring and fall, and so did Scali.
- 1:50:45Speaker 4: He brought him up in the fall.
- 1:50:47Speaker 8: Also, just some players that were going to end up
- 1:50:49Speaker 8: emerging at some point this year. I'm just happy to see,
- 1:50:53Speaker 8: you know, Rick. Rick's been working to have those opportunities, and,
- 1:50:57Speaker 8: I mean, he made the most.
- 1:50:58Speaker 4: Of every single ball that came his way. The only one.
- 1:51:01Speaker 8: He didn't capture is him Going for getting a P.I.
- 1:51:04Speaker 4: Call.
- 1:51:05Speaker 8: So just when the ball goes his way, you know,
- 1:51:07Speaker 8: he's doing a pretty good job with making the most
- 1:51:09Speaker 8: out of his opportunities.
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: What is he like personality wise?
- 1:51:13Speaker 9: Because he was on the postgame show on the radio
- 1:51:17Speaker 9: and he's got the coolest accent. And then Morgan Scali
- 1:51:23Speaker 9: came on right after. And they were like, Oh, we
- 1:51:26Speaker 9: just talked to Ricky Johnson. And Morgan was like, did
- 1:51:28Speaker 9: he say anything? Cause he's a quiet kid. So, so Rick,
- 1:51:32Speaker 9: he didn't seem like he was a quiet kid when
- 1:51:34Speaker 9: they were doing the interview with them. But then Morgan
- 1:51:36Speaker 9: was like, yeah, he never says anything.
- 1:51:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:51:39Speaker 8: So Ricky, Ricky's like the ultimate, like dude, you can't
- 1:51:45Speaker 8: get the talk unless like he feels ultimately comfortable. Like,
- 1:51:49Speaker 8: I've never heard Ricky talk before we went to our
- 1:51:52Speaker 8: Arizona trip. I've probably heard Ricky say 10 words the
- 1:51:57Speaker 8: whole entire spring. And then that summer when we kind
- 1:52:01Speaker 8: of forced.
- 1:52:01Speaker 4: Him to be with all of us for... Seven days straight.
- 1:52:05Speaker 8: And, you know, by day two, like, Ricky was starting conversations.
- 1:52:09Speaker 4: It was funny to see, like, him open up.
- 1:52:11Speaker 8: So I think I've built that comfortableness with him where,
- 1:52:15Speaker 8: you know, he talks to me. We've been playing Fortnite now.
- 1:52:17Speaker 8: I've been getting on the game with him. But, yeah,
- 1:52:20Speaker 8: Ricky's a character, bro.
- 1:52:22Speaker 4: I love him.
- 1:52:23Speaker 9: Got a lot of talent in that wide receiver room
- 1:52:25Speaker 9: as we have talked about a lot. Ricky with five catches,
- 1:52:29Speaker 9: BP with seven for 72. Creed Whittemore got involved. You
- 1:52:32Speaker 9: got the ball to Noah Benny, Daniel Bray. But the
- 1:52:35Speaker 9: one that really got the fan base going was a
- 1:52:39Speaker 9: one-yard pass to Semmy. Semmy Talanga on that option play.
- 1:52:45Speaker 9: You pull the ball and you throw the touchdown pass.
- 1:52:48Speaker 9: And it was like, I mean, that was a crucial,
- 1:52:50Speaker 9: crucial moment for in the game. Kansas, to their credit,
- 1:52:54Speaker 9: had made it a game, and you guys needed to
- 1:52:57Speaker 9: score there, and you needed to convert on fourth down,
- 1:53:00Speaker 9: and the play call gives you the option to throw
- 1:53:03Speaker 9: to big number 99.
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: Tell me what you saw. Tell me about the read,
- 1:53:07Speaker 2: and of course, the result. Yeah.
- 1:53:11Speaker 8: Man, there's a point where I handed off Timmy.
- 1:53:15Speaker 8: A run play and he went for a yard and
- 1:53:17Speaker 8: the crowd got real loud. So when we got to
- 1:53:20Speaker 8: that fourth down and I knew semi had a chance
- 1:53:22Speaker 8: to get in the ball, I was like, I thought
- 1:53:24Speaker 8: I already knew, like I, I seen him already scoring
- 1:53:26Speaker 8: in my head.
- 1:53:26Speaker 4: Like, Oh, the crowd, let the crowd love to see,
- 1:53:29Speaker 4: should be scored touchdowns.
- 1:53:30Speaker 8: But, uh, Matt, Maggie, he talked to us after he
- 1:53:34Speaker 8: was like, You know, four down, me calling that. He
- 1:53:39Speaker 8: said it with confidence to the coaches, like, yeah, let's
- 1:53:40Speaker 8: run that.
- 1:53:41Speaker 4: And then after he put the mic down, he was like,
- 1:53:44Speaker 4: all right.
- 1:53:46Speaker 8: So he told us after the game, it was the
- 1:53:48Speaker 8: way we all laugh, and then the offense will be there. Yeah, no,
- 1:53:53Speaker 8: perfect call, honestly. Being so close in there, you know,
- 1:53:57Speaker 8: they sleep on those guys being able to catch the ball.
- 1:53:59Speaker 4: So it all worked out.
- 1:54:01Speaker 9: And, look, you were able to freeze the defense with
- 1:54:04Speaker 9: the play action and the fake to weigh, Sean.
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: You had the option to give that ball there, right?
- 1:54:11Speaker 7: Yep.
- 1:54:13Speaker 4: Yep, I had the option to give it and, I mean,
- 1:54:16Speaker 4: weigh it.
- 1:54:18Speaker 8: Wade's been playing tremendous. There's a lot of good plays
- 1:54:24Speaker 8: where the.
- 1:54:25Speaker 4: Whole line makes holes for him.
- 1:54:26Speaker 8: There's also plays where Wade's getting touched minus one and
- 1:54:30Speaker 8: somehow turned it into an A-yard gain. I'm like, I've
- 1:54:33Speaker 8: been telling him just keep that up, bro.
- 1:54:35Speaker 4: We need it.
- 1:54:36Speaker 8: We're feeding off of it. And that's exactly how Semi
- 1:54:40Speaker 8: got open. I mean, Wade's playing his heart out. Those
- 1:54:42Speaker 8: guys respect him running the ball.
- 1:54:45Speaker 4: He just opened up the offense for other people as well.
- 1:54:47Speaker 2: If you had given it, he would have got in.
- 1:54:50Speaker 9: Bill Riley on the radio call actually thought you had
- 1:54:54Speaker 9: given it. He called it a touchdown for a way
- 1:54:55Speaker 9: shot and had to go back and The backtrack and
- 1:54:57Speaker 9: correct himself. And everyone was happy to see semi, but
- 1:55:00Speaker 9: as long as we're talking about way, Sean, there's a,
- 1:55:03Speaker 9: there's a scenario in this game where your defense gets
- 1:55:06Speaker 9: a much needed stop and it's still close. And the
- 1:55:09Speaker 9: outcome is at least in, on some level, still up
- 1:55:12Speaker 9: in doubt. And now you are all you're backed up
- 1:55:14Speaker 9: against your own end zone. You're, you know, you're standing
- 1:55:17Speaker 9: in the North end zone. when you're taking these snaps
- 1:55:20Speaker 9: or when you're dropping back, what are your thoughts and
- 1:55:23Speaker 9: what is the conversation like with your teammates when you're
- 1:55:25Speaker 9: backed up and you've got to go 99 yards to
- 1:55:28Speaker 9: get the score? Of course, it only took a few plays.
- 1:55:30Speaker 9: We'll get to that here in a second. But when
- 1:55:32Speaker 9: you're going out there and your defense has got you
- 1:55:34Speaker 9: that stop and stole some of the momentum back, what
- 1:55:36Speaker 9: were you thinking?
- 1:55:39Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, I just brought together the offense, and, you.
- 1:55:43Speaker 4: Know, this is our time to shine.
- 1:55:45Speaker 8: This is when, you know, this is when pressure hits us.
- 1:55:50Speaker 4: As offense, and, you know, what are we going to
- 1:55:52Speaker 4: do about it?
- 1:55:54Speaker 8: We've been in this situation before, you know, Coach Cowley,
- 1:55:56Speaker 8: puts us in a lot of situational drill throughout the year. And,
- 1:56:00Speaker 8: you know, we've done back-up periods so many times. And,
- 1:56:04Speaker 8: you know, we're able to get out of those on
- 1:56:06Speaker 8: our defense.
- 1:56:07Speaker 4: So just the confidence.
- 1:56:08Speaker 8: We've built, we're just like, hey, this is another time
- 1:56:12Speaker 8: to be the most efficient we can.
- 1:56:14Speaker 4: And I thought, you know, we did pretty well getting
- 1:56:16Speaker 4: out of there.
- 1:56:17Speaker 9: Well, you got the pass to BP for, you know,
- 1:56:20Speaker 9: kind of get you out of the shadow of the
- 1:56:21Speaker 9: end zone, right, to give you a little bit of
- 1:56:23Speaker 9: breathing room. And then Wayshawn Parker takes it 90 yards,
- 1:56:27Speaker 9: which it was good to see him get that one
- 1:56:29Speaker 9: back because a couple weeks ago he had one that
- 1:56:32Speaker 9: was called back on a penalty. So big long run
- 1:56:35Speaker 9: from that Wildcat formation for Wayshawn Parker. Were you motioned
- 1:56:42Speaker 9: out as a wide receiver, or were you on the sideline?
- 1:56:45Speaker 4: Yep, I was.
- 1:56:46Speaker 8: All that receiver at that play.
- 1:56:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:56:49Speaker 9: Now, when you're standing out there as a wide receiver
- 1:56:52Speaker 9: and you're watching that go, tell.
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: Me how it is.
- 1:56:56Speaker 8: In my head, I'm just always like, well, he's going
- 1:56:58Speaker 8: to get it.
- 1:56:59Speaker 4: So I'm just like, I'm just like that. But then I.
- 1:57:03Speaker 8: Low-key seen him, like, I can tell when Way, like,
- 1:57:05Speaker 8: sees a crease.
- 1:57:06Speaker 4: There's like a... he's got like a movement.
- 1:57:09Speaker 8: I've just, I've been able to like tell where you
- 1:57:11Speaker 8: can see a crease and he.
- 1:57:12Speaker 4: Stuck it and just hit it. And I was like, Oh,
- 1:57:15Speaker 4: he might be gone. And sure enough, that boy was gone.
- 1:57:19Speaker 9: I'll tell you it's, there's no guarantee in today's like
- 1:57:23Speaker 9: era of college football that even when you get to
- 1:57:26Speaker 9: that second level, no contact when you got 90 yards
- 1:57:29Speaker 9: to go, some of these DBS are really fast.
- 1:57:32Speaker 2: And way sean's not like a long strider he's.
- 1:57:35Speaker 9: Not a guy that we think of as like the
- 1:57:37Speaker 9: biggest breakout speed but uh you know he took all
- 1:57:40Speaker 9: the bad weight off himself in the off season no
- 1:57:43Speaker 9: one was going to catch him and again that's not
- 1:57:45Speaker 9: like a foregone conclusion in college football because how fast
- 1:57:48Speaker 9: some of these corners are nobody was touching.
- 1:57:50Speaker 8: Him yeah i mean the fact way probably way 25,
- 1:57:55Speaker 8: 30 pounds more than the corners and running at the
- 1:57:58Speaker 8: same speed or even faster.
- 1:58:00Speaker 4: I think he hit 23 miles an hour.
- 1:58:02Speaker 8: That's where they caught the man.
- 1:58:04Speaker 7: 23?
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. He was sliding.
- 1:58:07Speaker 4: He was sliding. At like 210?
- 1:58:10Speaker 2: Or whatever he is. That's a, that's the kind of stuff.
- 1:58:12Speaker 9: That's the tape that NFL coaches and NFL scouts are
- 1:58:15Speaker 9: going to be like, yeah, let me get that guy.
- 1:58:17Speaker 8: Speaker 3 What's funny is that was the first time
- 1:58:19Speaker 8: he hit that high of a number. So now scally's like,
- 1:58:21Speaker 8: all right, so now we know what your 90% is
- 1:58:23Speaker 8: every week when you got to hit the top three.
- 1:58:26Speaker 4: So that has gone up.
- 1:58:29Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 1:58:30Speaker 9: He just hurt himself in practice by going. Oh, Devin,
- 1:58:35Speaker 9: Deb peers, our guest here on the Sean O'Connell show
- 1:58:38Speaker 9: brought to you by Culligan water of salt Lake city,
- 1:58:40Speaker 9: America first credit union and Valley plumbing, heating and cooling
- 1:58:44Speaker 9: dishing with Dev every single week right here on your
- 1:58:47Speaker 9: home of the Utes.
- 1:58:49Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:58:49Speaker 9: You know, I got to do this to you. A
- 1:58:51Speaker 9: couple of turnovers in this game. Tell me what happened
- 1:58:54Speaker 9: on both of those plays.
- 1:58:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I can have the first one. I
- 1:58:59Speaker 4: just think I can have.
- 1:59:00Speaker 8: Better pocket movement out there. You know, I thrive on
- 1:59:04Speaker 8: my pocket movement and being able to help our O-line when,
- 1:59:07Speaker 8: you know, the things don't go right for them.
- 1:59:08Speaker 4: I'm always back there being able to recover.
- 1:59:11Speaker 8: So just pocket movement definitely could have helped the first turnover.
- 1:59:17Speaker 8: And yeah, I mean, just the second turnover, me and
- 1:59:19Speaker 8: BP were just on different terms. He thought I was
- 1:59:22Speaker 8: throwing him farther than I was and Yeah, it just,
- 1:59:26Speaker 8: it happens. You, you get to game five, you know,
- 1:59:29Speaker 8: I think that was the first interception where, you know,
- 1:59:31Speaker 8: I kind of threw one, um, just not being pressured
- 1:59:35Speaker 8: or anything.
- 1:59:36Speaker 4: So, I mean, it, it, it comes with the game, but, um,
- 1:59:39Speaker 4: you know, I, I think.
- 1:59:41Speaker 8: The biggest part that I took away from that is
- 1:59:43Speaker 8: just how we responded, honestly. Um, you know, gate, everything's
- 1:59:47Speaker 8: not going to be perfect, but the way you respond
- 1:59:49Speaker 8: definitely matters to me and my team.
- 1:59:51Speaker 4: And, you know, I think we take full advantage of that.
- 1:59:54Speaker 9: Well, yeah, obviously you guys responded well, and we've talked
- 1:59:58Speaker 9: a little bit about your process of, of making sure
- 2:00:01Speaker 9: you put the bad stuff out of your mind and
- 2:00:02Speaker 9: there are going to be broken plays like that. There
- 2:00:05Speaker 9: are going to be errant throws. There are going to
- 2:00:07Speaker 9: be fumbles from you or whoever else, like you have
- 2:00:10Speaker 9: to overcome those things in football. There is no such
- 2:00:13Speaker 9: thing as perfection in this game. in that particular case, right?
- 2:00:17Speaker 9: Do you go and you talk to BP and say, Hey,
- 2:00:20Speaker 9: that's not what I was doing. We got the wrong
- 2:00:21Speaker 9: read on each other. Do you go and take that
- 2:00:23Speaker 9: moment you've described by yourself and just like flush it
- 2:00:27Speaker 9: in the actual game against Kansas?
- 2:00:29Speaker 2: How did you move on from that, that throw?
- 2:00:33Speaker 8: Yeah, I definitely wouldn't imagine what the BP and half
- 2:00:35Speaker 8: what he was thinking and stuff like that. But I mean,
- 2:00:38Speaker 8: I always take full credit. That's, it's me putting the
- 2:00:42Speaker 8: ball out there it's me making those decisions so but
- 2:00:46Speaker 8: I just want to make sure if the situation ever
- 2:00:48Speaker 8: comes back again you know we're on the same page
- 2:00:50Speaker 8: we're clicking but I don't really stress too much I
- 2:00:54Speaker 8: get I do get a little quieter than I want
- 2:00:56Speaker 8: to be at times when when things go bad just
- 2:00:59Speaker 8: because I need to breathe I need to just reset
- 2:01:02Speaker 8: my my system that's that's how I've always got through
- 2:01:05Speaker 8: things is just breathe calm down get my heart rate
- 2:01:09Speaker 8: back down low and Um, so that's a little bit
- 2:01:12Speaker 8: of how I get, um, but still learning how to
- 2:01:16Speaker 8: be a leader at the same time, still encouraging my team,
- 2:01:18Speaker 8: let them know, you know, I'm not quiet because I'm
- 2:01:21Speaker 8: down on myself. I'm, I'm quiet because I'm, I'm calming
- 2:01:24Speaker 8: myself down.
- 2:01:24Speaker 4: Because, um, you know, there's no need to panic mode.
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:01:31Speaker 9: So, uh, to me when I'm watching, uh, the, the,
- 2:01:35Speaker 9: the running version of Devin Dampier this year looks healthier.
- 2:01:40Speaker 9: Looks like, you know, your body moves twitchier than it
- 2:01:43Speaker 9: did last year for obvious reasons, because you were, you
- 2:01:45Speaker 9: were at this point in the season, if I'm not mistaken,
- 2:01:47Speaker 9: you were already dealing with some stuff last year when
- 2:01:51Speaker 9: you watch yourself running or when you're evaluating your tape,
- 2:01:55Speaker 9: 17 carries 71 yards and a touchdown in this game.
- 2:01:59Speaker 2: Uh, How are you evaluating yourself? What do you want
- 2:02:02Speaker 2: to see more of?
- 2:02:03Speaker 9: What are you satisfied with, et cetera, when it comes
- 2:02:05Speaker 9: to you running the ball, carrying the football?
- 2:02:09Speaker 8: Yeah, I think, you know, the mindset of the way
- 2:02:13Speaker 8: Mac G just calls offense and things like that is
- 2:02:17Speaker 8: anytime I'm running the ball, there's always an option to
- 2:02:20Speaker 8: pass the ball. So, you know, I'm always trying to
- 2:02:24Speaker 8: Just take whatever is the best opportunity, honestly. Whatever is
- 2:02:28Speaker 8: going to move the change, what I feel confident in,
- 2:02:32Speaker 8: that's the decision I make. I feel like the run
- 2:02:35Speaker 8: game isn't as heavy as it was last year on me.
- 2:02:39Speaker 4: It's kind of up to me if I choose to
- 2:02:41Speaker 4: end up running in those gaps or not.
- 2:02:44Speaker 8: Honestly, I've been pretty fine with the amount of hits
- 2:02:48Speaker 8: I feel like I've been taking.
- 2:02:49Speaker 4: I feel like I've been taking the safer route on.
- 2:02:52Speaker 8: Getting hit this year just to prevent the injury of
- 2:02:56Speaker 8: sides of things because that contains a lot of experience
- 2:03:01Speaker 8: from last year.
- 2:03:01Speaker 4: Just playing and running the ball on the safer side.
- 2:03:05Speaker 8: Also, I mean, Wayshawn, I got unbelievable faith in him
- 2:03:09Speaker 8: that he's going.
- 2:03:09Speaker 4: To go make some out of nothing. I have Full
- 2:03:15Speaker 4: intentions of giving the ball whatever I can to win.
- 2:03:18Speaker 9: We talked about this also. You're a football player, ultimately.
- 2:03:22Speaker 9: You don't shy away from contact. You don't mind contact.
- 2:03:26Speaker 9: You're physically strong. So was that process of learning to
- 2:03:30Speaker 9: take the safer route, was that a natural thing for you?
- 2:03:33Speaker 2: How much effort went into that?
- 2:03:37Speaker 4: Um... I would say the injury probably did that to me. Okay.
- 2:03:44Speaker 4: It's one of those things where you test the limits
- 2:03:47Speaker 4: of something until it goes the other way.
- 2:03:50Speaker 8: I think that was.
- 2:03:53Speaker 4: The most severe injury I've ever had in my career.
- 2:03:57Speaker 8: So just having that, it definitely shifted my mindset where
- 2:04:02Speaker 8: this past spring and fall, we're practicing diving. Diving instead
- 2:04:07Speaker 8: of sliding, especially with the concussion thing that goes on
- 2:04:11Speaker 8: from QB sliding. We just practice diving instead. Taking a hit,
- 2:04:19Speaker 8: just being more, not going full head-on with the hit,
- 2:04:24Speaker 8: just learning to brace the hit, fall away from where
- 2:04:27Speaker 8: you get hit from.
- 2:04:27Speaker 4: Just small things like that.
- 2:04:29Speaker 8: That can definitely help the fall and the hit.
- 2:04:34Speaker 2: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:04:36Speaker 9: Devin Dampier, starting quarterback at the University of Utah, is
- 2:04:39Speaker 9: our guest. Edition with Deb, brought to you by Culligan
- 2:04:41Speaker 9: Water of Salt Lake City, America First Credit Union, and
- 2:04:44Speaker 9: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. All right, so now it's
- 2:04:48Speaker 9: another road trip. Crazy, you're getting into the midpoint of
- 2:04:52Speaker 9: the season. This is only the second road game. You
- 2:04:55Speaker 9: got to go on the road to Boulder. This is
- 2:04:56Speaker 9: a Colorado team that has a lot of things to
- 2:04:59Speaker 9: figure out right now. There's a couple of familiar faces there.
- 2:05:02Speaker 9: that side that we'll get to here in just a
- 2:05:04Speaker 9: second but uh what are your initial thoughts on this
- 2:05:08Speaker 9: colorado buffaloes team given the tape you've seen.
- 2:05:13Speaker 8: Yeah i mean i think they've been completing their games
- 2:05:16Speaker 8: pretty well i think you know they had times where
- 2:05:19Speaker 8: um you know the game started to get the best
- 2:05:22Speaker 8: of them at times but uh i mean they just
- 2:05:24Speaker 8: came off a bye week you know i think it's
- 2:05:26Speaker 8: They got kind of rid of a couple players on
- 2:05:29Speaker 8: their team. They're trying to make that shift so they
- 2:05:33Speaker 8: can be the most prepared going into the rest.
- 2:05:35Speaker 4: Of the season. I'm expecting a good opponent to come
- 2:05:38Speaker 4: out there.
- 2:05:39Speaker 8: We've got to put our best foot forward when we
- 2:05:44Speaker 8: go against them.
- 2:05:45Speaker 9: Former Ute Isaac Wilson has been given the start opposite you.
- 2:05:49Speaker 2: He'll be the opposing quarterback.
- 2:05:51Speaker 9: And in the modern era of college football, this is
- 2:05:54Speaker 9: a much more normal thing where you play against a
- 2:05:57Speaker 9: former teammate, you know, maybe every dang week in this conference. Also,
- 2:06:02Speaker 9: Stokes is over there. What does that do? Does that
- 2:06:05Speaker 9: change anything? How do you react to that?
- 2:06:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think that really changes too much. Yeah,
- 2:06:16Speaker 4: I honestly think it's just, it kind of just, we
- 2:06:19Speaker 4: respect those guys, we love those guys.
- 2:06:21Speaker 8: You know, football, after you've been around somebody for so long,
- 2:06:25Speaker 8: you know, you do genuinely care for them. But, man,
- 2:06:29Speaker 8: football is football, you know, and they know that as well.
- 2:06:31Speaker 8: You know, when the time comes, we strap those helmets on.
- 2:06:34Speaker 4: You know, it's all about what happens on that field.
- 2:06:37Speaker 4: And then, you know, afterwards, we'll definitely show our love
- 2:06:39Speaker 4: to each other and, you know, go on.
- 2:06:43Speaker 9: Does Deion Sanders being the head coach change the vibe
- 2:06:47Speaker 9: at all?
- 2:06:48Speaker 2: Because, I mean, he's.
- 2:06:51Speaker 9: One of the greatest defensive backs of all time. He's
- 2:06:53Speaker 9: one of the greatest overall NFL football players of all time.
- 2:06:57Speaker 9: He's an icon, and he's the competition, and obviously you
- 2:07:01Speaker 9: don't have a ton of interaction with an opposing head coach,
- 2:07:04Speaker 9: but does it change anything at all for you or
- 2:07:06Speaker 9: any player on this team?
- 2:07:10Speaker 4: I don't think so. I think, you know, we.
- 2:07:13Speaker 8: We respect anyone that's able to earn a head coach
- 2:07:17Speaker 8: job in college football. You know, you gain kind of
- 2:07:22Speaker 8: a lot of respect to be in that position and
- 2:07:25Speaker 8: do what you do. So, you know, I think we
- 2:07:27Speaker 8: treat everybody, you know, pretty equal. I think he's had
- 2:07:31Speaker 8: an amazing career in the NFL, though, no doubt. Definitely
- 2:07:34Speaker 8: respected in that area. But just as a head coach-wise,
- 2:07:37Speaker 8: you know, we.
- 2:07:38Speaker 4: Respect everybody we go against.
- 2:07:41Speaker 8: It's hard to have a job in college football. So
- 2:07:44Speaker 8: if you have one, you know, there's definitely respect towards
- 2:07:46Speaker 8: your name.
- 2:07:48Speaker 2: We didn't talk about this yet.
- 2:07:50Speaker 9: Against Kansas, the kickoff time got moved up, which was
- 2:07:53Speaker 9: very weird. I mean, from the fan, even from like
- 2:07:57Speaker 9: just I'm going to go to the game perspective, it
- 2:07:59Speaker 9: was strange. because you have, you know, your, your routine
- 2:08:02Speaker 9: already pictured in your mind. And again, not as a player,
- 2:08:05Speaker 9: just as a person, like, all right, I'm going to
- 2:08:07Speaker 9: take the kids and do this.
- 2:08:08Speaker 2: And then I'm going to put them to bed and
- 2:08:10Speaker 2: then I'm going to get to the game and it'll
- 2:08:11Speaker 2: be perfect timing.
- 2:08:12Speaker 9: And then you get a text or a tweet and
- 2:08:14Speaker 9: it's like, nope, moving this thing up to avoid the
- 2:08:17Speaker 9: bad weather.
- 2:08:18Speaker 2: What did that do to you guys?
- 2:08:19Speaker 9: Because obviously it's scheduled out a lot more carefully for
- 2:08:24Speaker 9: players than it is for fans. And you got late
- 2:08:26Speaker 9: notice that this kickoff was being pushed up.
- 2:08:29Speaker 2: How was it handled?
- 2:08:32Speaker 4: Um, I think it was honestly fine. Um, you know,
- 2:08:36Speaker 4: it ain't the team. It's a late starter. I won't
- 2:08:40Speaker 4: say it's not, but, uh, for it to get moved
- 2:08:43Speaker 4: up to sixes, it's like, okay, Ben, we just, for us.
- 2:08:47Speaker 10: It just became, we had less time, uh, at the
- 2:08:50Speaker 10: hotel of off time.
- 2:08:52Speaker 4: That's really all that kind of broke down.
- 2:08:55Speaker 8: We had, we had like about two hours of off
- 2:08:57Speaker 8: time at the hotel instead of we would have had
- 2:09:00Speaker 8: four or fill that eight. So, um, not, not too
- 2:09:03Speaker 8: different with that timing.
- 2:09:05Speaker 9: Uh, uh, I was a skeptic. I'm superstitious. So I
- 2:09:11Speaker 9: was like, I don't know about a whiteout in a
- 2:09:13Speaker 9: night game. And ultimately, it looked great. You guys looked great.
- 2:09:17Speaker 9: The whole team played great. You got the win. That's
- 2:09:20Speaker 9: all that really matters. What did you make of the whiteout?
- 2:09:24Speaker 9: First one at Rice Echo Stadium at night.
- 2:09:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I was excited when they got presented.
- 2:09:30Speaker 8: And especially seeing the helmets like a whole like two
- 2:09:33Speaker 8: months ago.
- 2:09:34Speaker 2: It was like.
- 2:09:36Speaker 4: And, you know, Scali asked for some of our preferences
- 2:09:38Speaker 4: on what we would change and stuff.
- 2:09:39Speaker 8: And I felt like, you know, us guys, we were
- 2:09:42Speaker 8: able to make the helmet just slightly better.
- 2:09:45Speaker 4: It was already tough.
- 2:09:49Speaker 2: Tell me the changes.
- 2:09:49Speaker 9: Tell me the artistic expression of Devin Dampier. What made
- 2:09:54Speaker 9: that helmet better? What did you bring in that maybe
- 2:09:57Speaker 9: we would not have seen if it weren't for your opinions?
- 2:10:01Speaker 8: I think the original, the original, the helmet was a
- 2:10:05Speaker 8: little bit more gray.
- 2:10:07Speaker 4: So it stood out from the white.
- 2:10:10Speaker 8: So we wanted it to flow better with all white uniforms.
- 2:10:13Speaker 8: So we had them lightened. lighten the gray of the,
- 2:10:18Speaker 8: which was like the main color of the helmet was
- 2:10:20Speaker 8: kind of grayish.
- 2:10:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:10:22Speaker 4: So we just, we kind of made that the white and.
- 2:10:24Speaker 8: Then made everything else the gray to pop out and
- 2:10:28Speaker 8: stuff like that.
- 2:10:30Speaker 4: But the red, the red U was on there already. Um,
- 2:10:34Speaker 4: there was a couple, I think there was some on
- 2:10:36Speaker 4: the back that we took off maybe just to add
- 2:10:39Speaker 4: more snow, snow falling on the helmet. But yeah, it was,
- 2:10:43Speaker 4: it was already kind of there. We just, we just,
- 2:10:45Speaker 4: Put a little dab in it.
- 2:10:46Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:10:47Speaker 9: Well, they looked great. Now, somebody texted this. We were
- 2:10:51Speaker 9: talking about this, I think, on Monday. If Devin Dampier
- 2:10:54Speaker 9: wants to keep his hand-painted special edition helmet, do you
- 2:10:59Speaker 9: get to keep that and put it in the home office?
- 2:11:03Speaker 8: For the previous years, we've had to buy them if
- 2:11:05Speaker 8: we want the helmets or not. Um, but I mean, they're,
- 2:11:12Speaker 8: they're at a pretty affordable price for us to.
- 2:11:14Speaker 4: Be able to get them.
- 2:11:15Speaker 8: So I think, I think this might be the helmet
- 2:11:17Speaker 8: I do buy the first light out.
- 2:11:19Speaker 4: Uh, definitely is going to have to happen. All right.
- 2:11:22Speaker 2: You already had that plan for like, where are you
- 2:11:24Speaker 2: going to like keep all this stuff?
- 2:11:26Speaker 9: Do you already have a spot in the house where
- 2:11:27Speaker 9: you keep your memorabilia?
- 2:11:29Speaker 2: You're just at the beginning of this whole journey.
- 2:11:31Speaker 9: Well, you know, you're going to have NFL jerseys and
- 2:11:32Speaker 9: all that stuff to worry about, but do you, do
- 2:11:35Speaker 9: you already know what that looks like in your mind?
- 2:11:39Speaker 4: You know, I got an idea. You know, it's hard
- 2:11:43Speaker 4: to exactly.
- 2:11:44Speaker 8: Make one of those right now when you're, like, living in.
- 2:11:47Speaker 4: It, if that makes sense. Yeah. Like, when I get
- 2:11:50Speaker 4: the helmet, I'm going to be like, I just wore it. So, like,
- 2:11:53Speaker 4: it isn't going to be, like, that cool yet.
- 2:11:55Speaker 8: But then, like, yeah, when I get, I don't know, second,
- 2:11:58Speaker 8: third year in my NFL career, then it's going to
- 2:12:01Speaker 8: be like, when I see the helmet and I walk
- 2:12:03Speaker 8: back to my house, it's going to be like, oh, yeah,
- 2:12:04Speaker 8: that was tough.
- 2:12:05Speaker 2: All right, well, when you get it, bring it into
- 2:12:07Speaker 2: the studio with you next time. We'll keep it for you.
- 2:12:09Speaker 4: No problem.
- 2:12:10Speaker 2: We'll put it back here behind me on the YouTube.
- 2:12:13Speaker 4: You can hold it back in my house.
- 2:12:16Speaker 11: Perfect.
- 2:12:18Speaker 2: Dev, good luck. Stay healthy in Colorado. Thanks for joining us.
- 2:12:21Speaker 9: I know the schedule gets a little bit crazy sometimes,
- 2:12:23Speaker 9: and we appreciate you making time.
- 2:12:26Speaker 2: And we'll talk to you soon.
- 2:12:28Speaker 4: You know it. Appreciate you. That is.
- 2:12:30Speaker 2: Edition with Devin.
- 2:12:34Speaker 3: Replay there brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooling,

- 2:13:05Speaker 3: as well. It's Dishing with Devin, episode 22, counting back
- 2:13:09Speaker 3: to the start of last season. So another great one there.
- 2:13:12Speaker 3: Appreciate Devin for making the time with us yesterday. Be
- 2:13:16Speaker 3: sure to go back and watch it or listen to
- 2:13:18Speaker 3: it if you haven't. You missed the whole thing, didn't
- 2:13:21Speaker 3: just hear it now, didn't hear it yesterday. Or you
- 2:13:23Speaker 3: want to hear it again. Great interview once again with O.C.,
- 2:13:28Speaker 3: And Devin Dampier. Okay, we have breaking news in college
- 2:13:31Speaker 3: football as far as the college football playoff is concerned.
- 2:13:36Speaker 3: Bring that to you in the next segment here. We
- 2:13:39Speaker 3: also have an Advocates Injury Attorneys Injury Update in the
- 2:13:45Speaker 3: Big 12, which Utes are out, which Utes may not
- 2:13:48Speaker 3: play on Saturday. What's BYU versus Notre Dame looking like?
- 2:13:53Speaker 3: We'll break it down next on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:13:56Speaker 3: James Peterson filling in. Utah's number one sports talk, your
- 2:14:00Speaker 3: home of the Utes and your home for football, ESPN
- 2:14:02Speaker 3: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:14:03Speaker 2: This is.
- 2:14:07Speaker 1: The Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the best inside
- 2:14:10Speaker 1: of your Utes. Let's get back to OC from the
- 2:14:13Speaker 1: Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:14:21Speaker 3: All right, winding down the Sean O'Connell show. We got
- 2:14:25Speaker 3: one more segment after this. Spence Checketts will be in studio.
- 2:14:28Speaker 3: We'll do a little crosstalk and then hand it off
- 2:14:31Speaker 3: to him. We'll bridge that with, how about, it's not breaking,
- 2:14:36Speaker 3: breaking news, Tyson. This is now a couple hours old,
- 2:14:39Speaker 3: but we haven't had a chance to talk about it
- 2:14:41Speaker 3: on the show yet. Pete Thamel reporting that the college
- 2:14:46Speaker 3: football playoff is nearing a deal to expand to 24 teams.
- 2:14:50Speaker 3: The new format will start next season in 2027 and
- 2:14:54Speaker 3: is expected to come together in the near future pending
- 2:14:57Speaker 3: final approval. So not officially official, but basically official 2014
- 2:15:04Speaker 3: playoffs starting next year, Tyson.
- 2:15:08Speaker 5: Well, you could say goodbye to the bowl season now.
- 2:15:10Speaker 5: I mean, any bowl game, it's not a playoff game.
- 2:15:13Speaker 5: I mean, it's hard to convince anybody to play in that.
- 2:15:15Speaker 3: I think that they're going to incorporate some of the
- 2:15:18Speaker 3: other bowls into the playoff games.
- 2:15:21Speaker 2: That's what I, and maybe they won't. That's what I
- 2:15:23Speaker 2: think they should do.
- 2:15:25Speaker 3: That seems like the most natural thing to do. Like
- 2:15:27Speaker 3: make these bowls mean something other than just exhibition games
- 2:15:33Speaker 3: against other good teams, right?
- 2:15:35Speaker 2: Like they've always been.
- 2:15:37Speaker 3: There's probably going to be first-round games on campuses. I
- 2:15:41Speaker 3: honestly think as great as on-campus game atmospheres are, it's
- 2:15:45Speaker 3: almost nothing like it anywhere in sports, particularly here in
- 2:15:49Speaker 3: the U.S. Just make them all neutral sites. That's what
- 2:15:53Speaker 3: the bowl season's always been. And save the bowls that way,
- 2:15:57Speaker 3: in my opinion. But obviously on-campus games are great, too.
- 2:16:03Speaker 3: So whatever they do there, I imagine the first round
- 2:16:05Speaker 3: will still be on campus like the 12-team playoff has been.
- 2:16:08Speaker 3: And then they'll incorporate some of these other bowls that
- 2:16:12Speaker 3: aren't New Year's 6 into the other rounds.
- 2:16:15Speaker 6: We'll see.
- 2:16:15Speaker 5: You almost have to because you think about fans probably
- 2:16:19Speaker 5: trying to calculate, all right, do I make one trip,
- 2:16:22Speaker 5: two trips? It's almost like those fans are like, I
- 2:16:25Speaker 5: can maybe make two trips to wherever they're going to
- 2:16:28Speaker 5: play those playoff games, but they can't make like four
- 2:16:30Speaker 5: or five trips. different trips over a month stretch true
- 2:16:33Speaker 5: because you know those vacations they take time you know
- 2:16:36Speaker 5: they take time and a whole lot of money especially
- 2:16:38Speaker 5: towards the christmas season and so that's why you probably
- 2:16:42Speaker 5: are going to see a lot of games on college
- 2:16:44Speaker 5: campuses until maybe the the round of eight or at
- 2:16:46Speaker 5: least around a 12 or something like that yeah.
- 2:16:49Speaker 3: Yeah we'll see how it goes again not officially official
- 2:16:52Speaker 3: it's pending final approvals according to pete thamel But the
- 2:16:57Speaker 3: CFP expected to expand next year from 12 to 24 teams.
- 2:17:02Speaker 3: This is what we kind of have been told is
- 2:17:05Speaker 3: going to happen eventually. So not a huge surprise that
- 2:17:09Speaker 3: it's going to start as soon as next season. And
- 2:17:13Speaker 3: I don't think it's a bad thing to have, obviously,
- 2:17:16Speaker 3: more teams in the playoff.
- 2:17:19Speaker 2: This is probably as much as it needs to be, though.
- 2:17:21Speaker 2: 24 teams.
- 2:17:24Speaker 3: I think 16 is probably the most it should be.
- 2:17:27Speaker 3: 24 certainly probably shouldn't expand anymore. But then the men's
- 2:17:32Speaker 3: NCAA and women's NCAA basketball tournaments, March Madness, is expanding
- 2:17:35Speaker 3: to 76 this year. So I'm sure it's going to
- 2:17:38Speaker 3: get into the 30s at some point. I just feel
- 2:17:40Speaker 3: like let's just keep it at 24 if that's where
- 2:17:43Speaker 3: we're going.
- 2:17:43Speaker 5: We're almost by the year 2040. Everybody's going to get
- 2:17:46Speaker 5: invited to the party, whether you went 0 and 12
- 2:17:48Speaker 5: or 12 and 0.
- 2:17:49Speaker 2: Yeah, 130 team college football playoff thereabouts. Let's go.
- 2:17:54Speaker 6: Can't leave anybody out.
- 2:17:55Speaker 5: Can't leave any deserving team out, you know, regardless of
- 2:17:58Speaker 5: who you are and regardless of what your resume is.
- 2:18:01Speaker 6: Rutgers, come on down. You're a playoff team.
- 2:18:03Speaker 3: If you want at least one game, if you were
- 2:18:05Speaker 3: at the lead at the half and at least one
- 2:18:08Speaker 3: of your games.
- 2:18:09Speaker 2: You're a playoff team.
- 2:18:11Speaker 6: Congratulations, Colorado Buffaloes. Coach Prime, you're a playoff team.
- 2:18:16Speaker 3: We got to do an injury update brought to you
- 2:18:17Speaker 3: by the Advocates Injury Attorneys. Injured in an accident, auto
- 2:18:21Speaker 3: or otherwise, not just a car accident, motorcycle accident. Maybe
- 2:18:25Speaker 3: you're just walking around outside, tripped and fell, hurt your
- 2:18:30Speaker 3: knee really bad. If you're curious, if you have a case,
- 2:18:34Speaker 3: call the advocates at 801-355-5550 or visit utahadvocates.com. You deserve
- 2:18:41Speaker 3: an advocate. Hopefully, you haven't been in an accident, but
- 2:18:45Speaker 3: these things happen. The advocates are there for you. Like
- 2:18:48Speaker 3: I said, if you're just curious if you have a case,
- 2:18:51Speaker 3: you don't even know if your case is a viable one,
- 2:18:56Speaker 3: they'll give you a free consultation, 801-355-5550. or visit utahadvocates.com.
- 2:19:04Speaker 3: Utah and Colorado, the Big 12 availability report. The first
- 2:19:08Speaker 3: one came out last night. It always comes out Wednesday night.
- 2:19:12Speaker 3: Utah has their cornerback J.C. Hart listed as out, and
- 2:19:16Speaker 3: linebacker Preston Pitts listed as doubtful. You don't want to
- 2:19:21Speaker 3: hear about guys being injured, Tyson, but that should be
- 2:19:24Speaker 3: pretty good news for Utes fans because those are guys that,
- 2:19:26Speaker 3: all due respect, have not been a factor yet. in
- 2:19:29Speaker 3: any of the games this season at their positions on
- 2:19:32Speaker 3: the defensive side. So that means Carson Kalfusi, who's been
- 2:19:36Speaker 3: listed as questionable on the initial injury report for much.
- 2:19:39Speaker 2: Of this season.
- 2:19:40Speaker 3: Isaiah Garcia, Ike Garcia on the offensive line, he's been
- 2:19:44Speaker 3: on the injury report every game. Listed as questionable or out,
- 2:19:49Speaker 3: has not played a game yet. He's not on this
- 2:19:51Speaker 3: initial injury report. So all your key players should be
- 2:19:55Speaker 3: available unless, knock on wood, something happens in practice between
- 2:19:59Speaker 3: now and game time, all of your key players should
- 2:20:03Speaker 3: be available if the injury reports continue to look like this.
- 2:20:06Speaker 5: Well, some teams across the country, their injury lists are huge.
- 2:20:09Speaker 5: You know, 10, 15 guys. But for Utah to only
- 2:20:12Speaker 5: have a couple players on there, that certainly is huge
- 2:20:14Speaker 5: as soon as we head into the second half of
- 2:20:16Speaker 5: the season.
- 2:20:17Speaker 3: Colorado, they only have one notable guy on their report.
- 2:20:21Speaker 3: They got a lot of guys on their report, but
- 2:20:22Speaker 3: one really notable one, it's Lamont Lester Jr. He's their
- 2:20:26Speaker 3: sack leader. He's second for them in tackles for loss.
- 2:20:31Speaker 3: He's listed as questionable. So there you go. No injury
- 2:20:35Speaker 3: report for BYU Notre Dame because it's not a conference game,
- 2:20:37Speaker 3: of course, so you only get these for Big 12 games.
- 2:20:40Speaker 3: But we found out, or it was reported, It was
- 2:20:44Speaker 3: put out there earlier this week. Isaiah Glasker, who missed
- 2:20:48Speaker 3: the Iowa State game, he's expected to play.
- 2:20:51Speaker 1: L.J.
- 2:20:51Speaker 3: Martin's still out for a number of weeks here. Sione Moa.
- 2:20:58Speaker 3: I'll say it like this. It sounds like he's cleared
- 2:21:00Speaker 3: medically to play, but they have not said that he's
- 2:21:05Speaker 3: officially going to play yet, that they expect him to play.
- 2:21:08Speaker 3: He may sit out this week, the number two running
- 2:21:11Speaker 3: back who's been out all year long. But he's healthy
- 2:21:17Speaker 3: enough to play if they feel like he's ready. Tyson,
- 2:21:20Speaker 3: you're the BYU fan here. Noel J. Martin, Sonny Moen,
- 2:21:25Speaker 3: next best thing. This is big news for the Cougars.
- 2:21:28Speaker 3: That would certainly be huge if he could find a
- 2:21:29Speaker 3: way to play. But if he's going to play, I
- 2:21:31Speaker 3: think BYU is going to say at the very last
- 2:21:33Speaker 3: minute that he's going to play.
- 2:21:34Speaker 6: I think that they want to.
- 2:21:36Speaker 5: Maybe make it look like he's going to be out
- 2:21:38Speaker 5: so Notre Dame doesn't plan for him. Losing LJ Martin
- 2:21:42Speaker 5: is certainly huge because BYU wants to be a balanced offense,
- 2:21:46Speaker 5: especially when you've got a dual-threat quarterback like Bear Bachmeier.
- 2:21:48Speaker 5: So when you lose LJ Martin, who pretty much is
- 2:21:50Speaker 5: BYU's equivalent of Wayshon Parker, if the Utes lost Wayshon Parker,
- 2:21:56Speaker 5: it means the same thing to them. And so Bear
- 2:21:59Speaker 5: actually threw the ball pretty well in the last game
- 2:22:02Speaker 5: against Iowa State. And so they're probably going to need
- 2:22:05Speaker 5: 250 to 300 passing yards from Bear, and they're probably
- 2:22:08Speaker 5: going to need Bear to run the ball maybe a
- 2:22:10Speaker 5: little bit more. Instead of maybe him running it 10
- 2:22:12Speaker 5: times a game, maybe he needs to run it 15 times.
- 2:22:15Speaker 5: It's certainly going to be huge against this Notre Dame
- 2:22:17Speaker 5: team if Sione Mohawk can play because BYU needs at
- 2:22:21Speaker 5: least the threat of a running game to not be
- 2:22:24Speaker 5: so one-dimensional.
- 2:22:25Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 2:22:26Speaker 3: So we'll see on that one. Keep you updated as
- 2:22:28Speaker 3: we hear more about those guys' status. It'll be a
- 2:22:31Speaker 3: lot more clear on the Utah game than the BYU
- 2:22:34Speaker 3: game because there's no official Big 12 injury report for
- 2:22:37Speaker 3: the BYU game, but we'll keep you apprised as we
- 2:22:39Speaker 3: hear more about that. It's October, so it's time to

- 2:23:17Speaker 3: We're home in the Seahawks. They're facing the Broncos in
- 2:23:20Speaker 3: Denver Thursday night football coverage starting at six right after
- 2:23:24Speaker 3: the drive here on ESPN 792 1 FM. We broke
- 2:23:27Speaker 3: down the Mammoth and Oilers game a couple of segments ago.
- 2:23:31Speaker 3: Tyson gave us the lowdown on that. 7 o'clock on
- 2:23:34Speaker 3: Utah 16 and Mammoth Plus. And MLB playoffs. One game
- 2:23:39Speaker 3: just ended. The Cleveland Guardians now lead the Tampa Bay
- 2:23:42Speaker 3: Rays two games to one. They won 3-2 in Cleveland.
- 2:23:46Speaker 3: That one just went final a little bit ago. NLCS
- 2:23:50Speaker 3: game four tonight at six on Fox. The Milwaukee Brewers
- 2:23:54Speaker 3: might sweep the two-time defending World Series champion, superstar-studded L.A.
- 2:24:01Speaker 2: Dodgers.
- 2:24:01Speaker 3: Get excited, everyone who's not a Dodgers fan, right? Like,
- 2:24:05Speaker 3: this is incredible what the Brewers might do tonight. Up
- 2:24:09Speaker 3: three games to none, six o'clock on Fox. We'll do
- 2:24:13Speaker 3: a little crosstalk and finish out the show. Hand it
- 2:24:16Speaker 3: off to Spence Check. It's in the drive. Next, on
- 2:24:19Speaker 3: Utah's number one sports talk and your home of the Utes,
- 2:24:22Speaker 3: ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 2:24:25Speaker 1: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700.
- 2:24:31Speaker 2: At 92.1 FM.
- 2:24:32Speaker 3: All right, wrapping up the show here.
- 2:24:38Speaker 2: James Peterson been filling.
- 2:24:40Speaker 3: In for OC today. He's in Chicago calling PFL fights.
- 2:24:43Speaker 3: He's out again tomorrow. I'll be with you again tomorrow.
- 2:24:46Speaker 3: We may... get him on from Chicago. Maybe air some
- 2:24:49Speaker 3: grievances with him. We'll see if he's got the time
- 2:24:51Speaker 3: to do that. But right now it's time for crosstalk
- 2:24:55Speaker 3: brought to you by advanced window products.
- 2:24:56Speaker 2: Spence check. It's in studio. Spence.
- 2:25:00Speaker 3: The question that I'm asking Utah fans today is what
- 2:25:03Speaker 3: do you need to see from Utah against Colorado this week?
- 2:25:06Speaker 2: And I, I preface this by saying.
- 2:25:08Speaker 3: It sounds like a question you ask when they're playing.
- 2:25:11Speaker 2: I know an FCS team, right?
- 2:25:14Speaker 3: But it feels like even though they're a power four
- 2:25:16Speaker 3: team and a conference opponent to boot, it feels like
- 2:25:22Speaker 3: there's that much of a talent gap between Utah and Colorado.
- 2:25:27Speaker 3: And even though it's a road game, it kind of
- 2:25:28Speaker 3: feels like that's the kind of game we got on
- 2:25:30Speaker 3: our hands.
- 2:25:31Speaker 2: It's like obviously you want to win. Obviously you want
- 2:25:33Speaker 2: to blow a.
- 2:25:34Speaker 3: Team that you have that big a discrepancy with talent-wise.
- 2:25:38Speaker 3: You want to blow them out even though it's on
- 2:25:40Speaker 3: the road. So what else– do you need to see
- 2:25:44Speaker 3: from this Utah team similar to the way we talk
- 2:25:46Speaker 3: about when they're playing an FCS team?
- 2:25:48Speaker 2: So what do you think?
- 2:25:49Speaker 11: I feel a little bit similar as I did last
- 2:25:51Speaker 11: week against Kansas because, you know, when you look at
- 2:25:54Speaker 11: some of the deeper advanced metrics, Colorado's run defense isn't bad.
- 2:25:59Speaker 11: And so Utah at least will have some pushback there.
- 2:26:02Speaker 11: I don't think Colorado can stop Utah's run game. Kevin
- 2:26:06Speaker 11: McGiven right now, as a result of an offensive line
- 2:26:09Speaker 11: that's answered every question we've had, And a team that
- 2:26:12Speaker 11: stayed relatively healthy. BYU is dealing with some injuries. And Utah,
- 2:26:16Speaker 11: up to this point, has been more or less healthy.
- 2:26:19Speaker 11: Every game, we see a different playmaker emerge. Ricky Johnson
- 2:26:22Speaker 11: last week over 100 yards. You know, to your point,
- 2:26:27Speaker 11: I don't think Colorado has near the talent Utah does.
- 2:26:31Speaker 11: And this is one of those games that I wouldn't
- 2:26:32Speaker 11: mind seeing over by the end of the third quarter.
- 2:26:35Speaker 11: Get the players on ice. Make sure they're healthy because
- 2:26:38Speaker 11: Houston is good. And this is a team. right now
- 2:26:43Speaker 11: that has beaten every team they've played by 14 or
- 2:26:46Speaker 11: more points. No team in college football has done that.
- 2:26:49Speaker 11: By every data point and metric, they're one of the
- 2:26:51Speaker 11: top two or three teams in the Big 12. And
- 2:26:54Speaker 11: so just like an anxiety-free Saturday night, Isaac Wilson, who
- 2:26:59Speaker 11: we know in the seven starts he made for Utah
- 2:27:01Speaker 11: as a freshman, had eight, quote, big-time throws, 18 turnover-worthy plays.
- 2:27:07Speaker 11: Isaac is a little bit like his brother. They can
- 2:27:08Speaker 11: throw the football, but they're going to put it in
- 2:27:10Speaker 11: spots where you talk and turn them over. So clean game,
- 2:27:13Speaker 11: minimal penalties, no turnovers, leave no doubt. Good teams cover.
- 2:27:17Speaker 11: I say it all the time. It's a 15 and
- 2:27:19Speaker 11: a half point spread. That feels low to me. I
- 2:27:22Speaker 11: actually think this is closer to a three touchdown game
- 2:27:24Speaker 11: for Utah. And I'm starting to feel like I felt
- 2:27:27Speaker 11: when Arkansas was here that I don't think Colorado has
- 2:27:30Speaker 11: a prayer.
- 2:27:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's how I feel about it too. Like
- 2:27:33Speaker 3: I said, it feels ridiculous to be talking about a
- 2:27:37Speaker 3: powerful conference opponent, the way, the way that we're thinking
- 2:27:41Speaker 3: and talking about Colorado and, and hopefully that's not how
- 2:27:44Speaker 3: the players and coaches are thinking about it, but us
- 2:27:46Speaker 3: in the media, like that's what it feels like. And
- 2:27:48Speaker 3: so I'm just looking for, let's not have another long
- 2:27:51Speaker 3: stretch of an offensive lull where you three and out turnover,
- 2:27:54Speaker 3: three and out, whatever that we've seen. It feels like
- 2:27:57Speaker 3: at least one quarter a game this year. Let's eliminate that.
- 2:28:01Speaker 3: Maybe extend that pick six streak against Isaac Wilson here.
- 2:28:06Speaker 3: Let's have some more big defensive plays that I feel
- 2:28:09Speaker 3: like have been lacking a little bit as good as
- 2:28:11Speaker 3: the defensive end. We haven't had those big plays yet
- 2:28:16Speaker 3: very much on the defensive side. That's what I'm looking
- 2:28:19Speaker 3: for from Utah this week. We had some texters just
- 2:28:22Speaker 3: simply say, just be more consistent, and I think that's
- 2:28:25Speaker 3: more speaking to let's not have those offensive lulls.
- 2:28:29Speaker 2: In the middle of this game.
- 2:28:30Speaker 3: And this could be like a get right's not the
- 2:28:34Speaker 3: right term because they're undefeated. Maybe it's like a perfect
- 2:28:37Speaker 3: kind of game. Perfect the things that haven't been ideal.
- 2:28:41Speaker 2: And I expect them to be able to do that
- 2:28:43Speaker 2: this weekend.
- 2:28:43Speaker 11: Yeah, and look, Morgan, during his media availability on Monday,
- 2:28:47Speaker 11: was asked if he's concerned about the lack of sacks, right?
- 2:28:50Speaker 11: And he was emphatic that he's not. And so he's
- 2:28:52Speaker 11: that coach. I will cede to him. But I want
- 2:28:54Speaker 11: to see a defensive end get Isaac Wilson on the ground.
- 2:28:58Speaker 2: Go even day, Lance Holtzclaw.
- 2:29:00Speaker 11: And I do think that, you know, again, I've tried
- 2:29:03Speaker 11: to analyze this team through what will it look like
- 2:29:06Speaker 11: when Houston is here? What will it look like when
- 2:29:08Speaker 11: BYU is here? What will it look like when you're
- 2:29:10Speaker 11: at Arizona? Because I still think Arizona is a good team.
- 2:29:13Speaker 11: And it's not a great litmus test once again, because
- 2:29:16Speaker 11: Colorado is not very good, but if you can't get
- 2:29:20Speaker 11: Isaac Wilson on the ground, bear Bachmeier is going to
- 2:29:22Speaker 11: run over you, you know? And so I understand Morgan's point.
- 2:29:25Speaker 11: And again, he is the head coach. So we will
- 2:29:28Speaker 11: trust what he has to say. If he's not concerned
- 2:29:29Speaker 11: about it, none of us really should be, but I
- 2:29:32Speaker 11: I'd like to see a defensive end, get a sack.
- 2:29:35Speaker 11: I I'd like to see them get Isaac on the ground. And, uh,
- 2:29:38Speaker 11: you know, I want way Sean to be as healthy
- 2:29:40Speaker 11: as possible, but I wouldn't mind seeing way Sean get
- 2:29:42Speaker 11: 20 carries.
- 2:29:43Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:29:44Speaker 11: I mean, he's averaged 10 yards of carry over his
- 2:29:46Speaker 11: past two games. 100-plus yards receiving. He's the leading receiver
- 2:29:50Speaker 11: in all of P4 football from the running back position.
- 2:29:54Speaker 11: And he has a chance to win Big 12 Offensive
- 2:29:56Speaker 11: Player of the Year. It's a tricky dance because you
- 2:29:58Speaker 11: want to make sure he's healthy. But I'd like to
- 2:30:00Speaker 11: see the kid get his numbers a little bit. I
- 2:30:02Speaker 11: want to see him get 20 touches. I wouldn't mind that.
- 2:30:04Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. And then we'll close it out with this, Vince.
- 2:30:09Speaker 4: The.
- 2:30:10Speaker 3: It's unofficially official. Pete Thamel put the tweet out there.
- 2:30:14Speaker 3: There's going to be a 2014 playoff pending final approval
- 2:30:17Speaker 3: is what the language is there starting next season. They've
- 2:30:23Speaker 3: been talking about this like it's been inevitable, so none
- 2:30:25Speaker 3: of us should be surprised, but it is starting as
- 2:30:28Speaker 3: early as next season.
- 2:30:28Speaker 2: Your thoughts?
- 2:30:29Speaker 11: Yeah, it's not great for people that are still holding
- 2:30:33Speaker 11: on to the historical romance of college football. And I
- 2:30:38Speaker 11: get that. I don't look yet. We need we need
- 2:30:41Speaker 11: to be grown ups about this. OK, when the Supreme
- 2:30:44Speaker 11: Court threw the NCAA out and said you are a
- 2:30:46Speaker 11: serial antitrust violator, go figure it out. Paving the way
- 2:30:50Speaker 11: for NIL to become a reality. And now these kids
- 2:30:52Speaker 11: can get paid. And then the transfer portal allows them
- 2:30:55Speaker 11: to change teams every single year. When those two things happened,
- 2:30:59Speaker 11: it was an inevitability that this sport is going to
- 2:31:01Speaker 11: move into a professional model. It already is there. So
- 2:31:05Speaker 11: if and I want to be clear here, I miss
- 2:31:09Speaker 11: parts of the old sport. OK, and this will dilute
- 2:31:14Speaker 11: and diminish the regular season. And that sucks. There's no
- 2:31:17Speaker 11: way around it. You know, one of the great this
- 2:31:19Speaker 11: is the best regular season in sports, because if you
- 2:31:22Speaker 11: lose a game, well, it's not going to matter anymore.
- 2:31:28Speaker 11: But historically speaking, you lose one game. And your margin
- 2:31:31Speaker 11: of error to win your league or advance to a
- 2:31:33Speaker 11: CFP is very, very small. And we've already seen some
- 2:31:38Speaker 11: Big Ten and SEC teams lose three games and be
- 2:31:41Speaker 11: able to get into the 12-team CFP. So what is
- 2:31:43Speaker 11: it going to mean moving forward? What does the access
- 2:31:44Speaker 11: look like? The reality is it actually is good for
- 2:31:47Speaker 11: a program like Utah, right? The schools that exist in
- 2:31:52Speaker 11: the forever were either between 11 and 24.
- 2:31:55Speaker 2: It's good for.
- 2:31:56Speaker 11: Okay. So there's an argument to be made. This is
- 2:31:58Speaker 11: actually good for Utah. Is it good for the overall,
- 2:32:01Speaker 11: overall sport of college football? Probably not because it does
- 2:32:04Speaker 11: diminish what I believe is the best regular season in
- 2:32:07Speaker 11: all of sports. Unfortunately.
- 2:32:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:32:11Speaker 3: What I'm afraid of is what we've seen with the
- 2:32:13Speaker 3: NCAA tournament gradually over the years. We're now with March madness.
- 2:32:17Speaker 3: We're now a 76 teams starting this year.
- 2:32:19Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:32:20Speaker 3: We're going to get to 45 teams to the college
- 2:32:23Speaker 3: football playoff. Like I, 24, I don't even know if
- 2:32:26Speaker 3: it needs to be that big.
- 2:32:27Speaker 2: I would have capped it at 16 maybe seems reasonable
- 2:32:30Speaker 2: to me.
- 2:32:31Speaker 3: 12, I've liked. It needed to be more than four.
- 2:32:35Speaker 3: Let's be clear about that. There's some people who are like,
- 2:32:36Speaker 3: four was the best.
- 2:32:37Speaker 6: No, it wasn't.
- 2:32:40Speaker 3: But if we're going to if we're already jumping to 24,
- 2:32:43Speaker 3: then we're probably going to get over 30 teams in
- 2:32:45Speaker 3: the playoff at some point. And I just like if
- 2:32:47Speaker 3: we're going this far, let's just keep it this way
- 2:32:50Speaker 3: for good.
- 2:32:50Speaker 2: But that's not how things work in this sport.
- 2:32:52Speaker 6: Yeah, probably not.
- 2:32:53Speaker 11: There's there's a side of the debate that says this
- 2:32:57Speaker 11: is good for the middle class of college football.
- 2:32:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:33:01Speaker 11: And is Utah in the middle class of college? The
- 2:33:03Speaker 11: reality is, if you're in the Big 12, you're in
- 2:33:04Speaker 11: the middle class of college football. Unless, you know, a
- 2:33:07Speaker 11: Texas Tech with Cody Campbell money one year. is able
- 2:33:10Speaker 11: to elevate if BYU beats Notre Dame on Saturday. Maybe
- 2:33:13Speaker 11: we talk about them differently. But if you're in the
- 2:33:16Speaker 11: Big 12, this is actually probably good because you do
- 2:33:19Speaker 11: get access to the tournament. The reality is college football
- 2:33:22Speaker 11: is not like college basketball. There will not be the
- 2:33:25Speaker 11: 24th-ranked team win five games to win a national championship.
- 2:33:29Speaker 3: You can have a mid-major make it to the Final Four,
- 2:33:32Speaker 3: whatever equivalent like that.
- 2:33:34Speaker 2: Is in college football.
- 2:33:35Speaker 11: Tulane is not winning five straight games to win a
- 2:33:37Speaker 11: national championship. That's not how it works. It's another step
- 2:33:41Speaker 11: in college football becoming more of a pro model, and
- 2:33:45Speaker 11: we can cry about it all we want. There's part
- 2:33:47Speaker 11: of me that doesn't like it, but we have to
- 2:33:48Speaker 11: be adults and realize where we're at with the sport.
- 2:33:50Speaker 3: Absolutely, and like you said, in the short term, Utah's
- 2:33:54Speaker 3: probably going to make the playoff most years. BYU's probably
- 2:33:56Speaker 3: going to make the playoff most years in this 2014 field,
- 2:33:59Speaker 3: so kind of embrace that, I guess, if you're feeling
- 2:34:03Speaker 3: kind of like us, where you're like, yeah, I don't
- 2:34:05Speaker 3: really like it. Embrace, hey, more access. is definitely a
- 2:34:09Speaker 3: good thing for our local teams. What's coming up on
- 2:34:11Speaker 3: the drive?
- 2:34:12Speaker 11: Mostly college football today. Sammy Mora, Ted Robinson, who is
- 2:34:16Speaker 11: a Notre Dame grad, Ryan Gunderson, Utah quarterbacks coach, and,
- 2:34:20Speaker 11: of course, it's Thursday, so our friends from Handy and
- 2:34:22Speaker 11: Handy will stop by.
- 2:34:23Speaker 2: Awesome. Sports court.
- 2:34:25Speaker 6: Love it.
- 2:34:25Speaker 3: That's coming up on the drive with Spence Checketts. I'm
- 2:34:27Speaker 3: James Peterson, filled in for OC today. I'll be filling
- 2:34:31Speaker 3: in again tomorrow. OC out on assignment for the PFL
- 2:34:34Speaker 3: in Chicago. And, again, the drive with Smets jackets is
- 2:34:37Speaker 3: next here on Utah's number one sports talk in your
- 2:34:39Speaker 3: home of the UTSB and seven hundred ninety two one FM.
