Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Growth and Maturation of the Psychic Being Brings Increasing Power and Influence on the External Being
Transcript
- 0:02We experience a growth of consciousness during the
- 0:05maturation process, starting with birth and continuing as the
- 0:09infant becomes a school aged child, then grows into teenage
- 0:14years and passes through puberty and the hormonal changes that
- 0:18come with that period, then into young adulthood and experience
- 0:23of adult life. Eventually, as an elder who
- 0:27hopefully has gained some vision and reflection about life as he
- 0:31reflects on his experience, a similar process occurs for the
- 0:37growth and maturation of the psychic being the sole essence
- 0:41within each individual, although that process takes place not
- 0:46within the space of a single lifetime, but across numerous
- 0:50lifetimes, gathering the fruit of the soul's experience without
- 0:55attachment to specific bodies, lifetimes, or formations that
- 1:00may have been part of that experience.
- 1:03This brings us to an important and interesting observation.
- 1:08We cannot expect the psychic being to wield the same
- 1:11influence in its initial stages of development as when it has
- 1:15fully matured. Each individual passes through
- 1:19these various stages, and thus we have a continuum of soul
- 1:24development across not only the individual soul's growth, but
- 1:29across the entire spectrum of humanity.
- 1:32Just as we do not blame the infant or the child for not
- 1:36having at that stage of life the full mental capacity that they
- 1:40will have as an adult, so we also cannot blame any individual
- 1:46whose psychic being is still forming and not yet fully
- 1:49managing the external being and its interactions in the world.
- 1:55And if we reflect on the growth process, we begin to appreciate
- 2:00that there is no room for pride or arrogance about one's own
- 2:04superiority, as it is not truly a superiority but a matter of
- 2:10timing. The butterfly cannot look down
- 2:14upon the Caterpillar because it cannot yet fly, Sri Aurobindo
- 2:20observes Quote. Moreover, the psychic being, the
- 2:25sole personality in US, does not emerge full grown and luminous.
- 2:30It evolves, passes through a slow development and formation.
- 2:36Its figures of being may be at first indistinct, and may
- 2:40afterwards remain for a long time weak and undeveloped, not
- 2:45impure, but imperfect. For it rests its formation, its
- 2:50dynamic self, building on the power of soul that has been
- 2:54actually, and more or less successfully, against the
- 2:58resistance of the ignorance and inconscience put forth in the
- 3:03evolution upon the surface. Its appearance is the sign of a
- 3:07soul emergence in nature. And if that emergence is as yet
- 3:12small and defective, the psychic personality also will be
- 3:16stunted, or feeble. It is, too, by the obscurity of
- 3:21our consciousness, separated from its inner reality, in
- 3:25imperfect communication with its own source, in the depths of the
- 3:29being. For the road is as yet I'll
- 3:32built easily obstructed the wires often cut or crowded with
- 3:38communications of another kind, and proceeding from another
- 3:42origin its power to impress what it recedes upon the other
- 3:48instruments is also imperfect. In its penury, it has for most
- 3:54things to rely on these instruments, and it forms its
- 3:59push to expression and action on their data, and not solely on
- 4:04the unerring perceptions of the psychic entity.
- 4:09In these conditions it cannot prevent the true psychic light
- 4:13from being diminished or distorted in the mind into a
- 4:16mere idea or opinion, the psychic feeling in the heart
- 4:20into a fallible emotion or mere sentiment, the psychic will to
- 4:25action in the life parts into a blind vital enthusiasm or a
- 4:30fervid excitement. It even accepts these
- 4:33mistranslations for want of something better, and tries to
- 4:38fulfil itself through them. For it is part of the work of
- 4:42the soul to influence mind and heart and vital being, and turn
- 4:49their ideas, feelings, enthusiasms, dynamisms in the
- 4:54direction of what is divine and luminous.
- 4:58But this has to be done at first, imperfectly, slowly, and
- 5:03with a mixture. As the psychic personality grows
- 5:06stronger, it begins to increase its communion with the psychic
- 5:11entity behind it and improve its communications with the surface.
- 5:16It can transmit its intimations to the mind and heart and life
- 5:20with a greater purity and force, for it is more able to exercise
- 5:26a strong control and react against false mixtures.
- 5:31Now more and more it makes itself distinctly felt as a
- 5:35power in the nature. But Even so, this evolution
- 5:39would be slow and long if it left slowly to the difficult
- 5:44automatic action of the evolutionary energy.
- 5:48It is only when man awakes to the knowledge of the soul and
- 5:52feels a need to bring it to the front and make it the master of
- 5:56his life in action that a quicker conscious method of
- 6:00evolution intervenes and a psychic transformation becomes
- 6:05possible. End Quote Reference Sri
