- 0:08[SPEAKER_06]: Hey everybody, welcome back to The Great Malkin Lane podcast where queer friends and allies gathered to review and discuss the original X-Men comics in continuity order.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_06]: Now the theme on the show and March is going to be gimmicks.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_06]: We're going to be talking about the worst and weirdest versions of the X-Men on the show.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_06]: Last week I got to delve into the world of power packiterms, which is the world where all the X-Men are elephants.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_06]: And today, we're going to be covering other various animal hybrids.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_06]: So happy to be joined by the incredible hosts of the X men podcast.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_06]: Okay, EX apostrophe.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_06]: I'm sorry, EX dash, M-E-N, which is a brilliant name for two hilarious trans girls running this show.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_06]: The only other show out there that has a name this clever is my gay friends in Washington, D.C. who have an exponential called homo superior, which is also
- 0:56[SPEAKER_06]: I'm basically name.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_06]: I'm so happy to have Beth and Shawty here on the show.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_06]: If you guys have been following them on Instagram, they're posting these hilarious wonderful video clips about all things X men.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_06]: I can't wait to get to know you both.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_06]: Thank you for coming on the show.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_06]: Let me have you introduce yourselves with your names and pronouns.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_06]: Tell us how you met and how you started your show.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_06]: We're just going to kind of begin there.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_03]: Well, my name's Beth, she here.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm shorting, she here.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_03]: In terms of how we met, Shorty and I play in a band together, I call Beth Seymour on the disease, because I'm so vain.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_03]: I named the band after myself twice.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_03]: Well, we kind of, we connected before that, having played like in,
- 1:33[SPEAKER_03]: shows in like our all the respective bends before kind of becoming friends and coming together.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_03]: The show came about because I am about one of the biggest X-Men fans on the planet and Shawnee had never read anything at all.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_03]: And I told her I'd had this idea kicking around.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, it was just kind of like an off-the-cuff joke.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, you know, it wouldn't be funny if there was a transcript hosted podcast called X-Men Get It because, you know,
- 2:03[SPEAKER_03]: You're wearing the whole time, but by societal standards, yes, I love the part of that yeah, that's it that's it She goes that's not a jerk anymore.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_03]: We're doing that.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_04]: So it's kind of like all I needed to hear and it was a massive Yeah, it's it's fun.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_03]: This dynamic.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_03]: We have we started from the beginning Well, we saw from giant size X men, so we could get into clam on this run because that's where the good stuff stopped And so we should have started with this 60 stuff and it took us like three years to get to Claremonts
- 2:31[SPEAKER_06]: My condolences.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_04]: Shorty Sarah, I think you want to add.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_04]: I think you summarized it well.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_04]: I was a really big fan of the X-Men from the cartoon and the movies.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_04]: So, like, as an idea, I always really love them and gravitated towards them.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_04]: But I never really got into comments.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_04]: This is my perfect entry point because Beth knows everything there is and I know enough.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_06]: That's such a fun premise.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_06]: Okay, so my really dear friends Justin and Alicia have the X wife podcast and their initial premise was Justin loves the comics and Alicia had never read them.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_06]: But their tag went on the show constantly as it's X wife like X men not like former wife.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_06]: We're still married after all.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, oh my god, if they got divorced in the midst of the podcast.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_06]: That would be dramatic.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_06]: Well, then we would go to Jay and Miles root, right?
- 3:20[SPEAKER_06]: Everybody knows their story as well for those of you that follow Jay and Miles.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_06]: There's a cute little sub genre of X-Men queer podcasts out there.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_06]: How has it been launching into fun X-Men commentary?
- 3:33[SPEAKER_03]: I have been stoked with the response honestly because looking through our comment sections and everything on TikTok and Reels and what have you, it doesn't seem like there's any straight X-Men fans.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_03]: So it just, every body in our comment section has been like,
- 3:50[SPEAKER_03]: very positive in engaging with us.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_03]: And we haven't had like, I've been on the internet a long time, you know, there's always people who want to tell you you're wrong and we get it every now and then.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_03]: But mostly people are just stoked that we're doing what we're doing and engaging with us.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_03]: And we have a very idiosyncratic brand of humor, I guess, the people who have listened to the show are just sort of taken to.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_06]: You guys just make each other giggle.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_06]: It makes me smile so big.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_06]: I love things that make me feel happy, especially in fascism America, but in 26, which is a terrible place, but things that make me smile and bring joy are such a huge thing.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_06]: Uh, let's talk about your music for just a minute.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_06]: Shawnee, how would you describe Beth's music style?
- 4:29[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, it's punk as hell.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_04]: But in a way that will make you cry, both because of the devastatingly poignant, illerical content.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_04]: But also it just gets you right in the heart.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_04]: If you are queer or trans or have just gone through like any sort of struggling life, she just has such a way of articulating it, make you feel less alone in a really powerful triumph.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_06]: So Beth, singer, songwriter, guitar player.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_06]: And how would you describe Shawnee's music style?
- 4:59[SPEAKER_03]: Johnny is one of the most phenomenal musicians I have ever had the honor of playing with because we started this band early last year and I set the songs through and I've never had it before that somebody turned up for a first-gen with me and she already knew every part and also the backing vocals.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_03]: And she just is like a very instinctive player.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_03]: Somebody who, like, the right thing to do just comes to her.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_03]: And I just think we have this great energy together.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_03]: We're, you know, always look over at her while we're rehearsing, we'll play the gig or whatever.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, we just, we just smile at each other and let, we're like, we're locked in.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_03]: We're in the zone.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_04]: And Sean, are you also a singer?
- 5:39[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, I am sorry, we're getting tears on the pod the earliest that we've ever done it.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_04]: Frank's allowed on the pod.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_04]: We always say that.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_04]: I'm allowed on our pod, so I assume the same here.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, I do, I do do a bit of singing, yeah, I am mainly into backups at the moment, because Beth is an absolute powerhouse, and it's just a joy to be singing along with her.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_06]: I love a punk queer band.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_06]: I can't wait to hear some of your stuff.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_06]: You have to send me links later.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_06]: I have an amateur band here as well.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_06]: I'm a singer.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_06]: My husband's a piano player, but my husband also plays keyboards sometimes for a local band of rock and roll drag queens, which is very fun.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_06]: I love that scene every time.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_06]: We're in Salt Lake City, which is a crazy place.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_06]: There's a why you're seeing here, which is not what you would expect always.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_06]: Beth, can I hear a little about your origins with the X-Men?
- 6:27[SPEAKER_06]: For many queer readers, the X-Men represent a safety and a sense of being seen.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_03]: I first connected with the X-Men, what was about six years old, you know, and like for a lot of people, my age, it would have been through the animated series.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_06]: And just for context, Beth is approximately 17 now.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_06]: I'm just letting it
- 6:46[SPEAKER_03]: I'm 35.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_06]: Oh my god, you look amazing.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, thank you.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_03]: The people on the audio are full man, I'm gonna hear that, but you know, they can scroll my Instagram.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_03]: I'll hype me up, gang.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_03]: It was just this franchise I always connected with, and I thought a logist time, I guess I just couldn't work out why, you know, I was singing to myself.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_03]: We've talked about this on our podcast for like, hmm.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think I'm a minority, but why do I resonate with this so deeply?
- 7:13[SPEAKER_03]: But these comics have been like a constant in my life and I've had a bit of a tumultuous existence and I've been through a lot and these comics always lend me a safe place to
- 7:26[SPEAKER_03]: escape to.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_03]: So on the journey of like discovering myself and becoming the person I am, but you know, resin is going to always resonate with the queer person that the X men are all different and they come together and they united through their differences.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_03]: And it's this sense of found family and connection translates very easily across.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_03]: So it's very obvious to see why this franchise would connect with people so deeply.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_03]: But I've been probably reading and collecting X-Men for it's got to be close to 30 years now.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_03]: It's, yeah, like I said, it's just always been there for me.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I've shared this on the show a few times, but I grew up in a very abusive household as a queer kid.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_06]: And X-Men was like my refuge, particularly in high school when things were pretty bad.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_06]: And by the time I graduated college, I had thousands of books.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_06]: And I ended up writing the Marvel Handbooks for years.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_06]: as part of a team, this like in cyclopedic knowledge of X-Men was such a huge part of my 20s, and now in my 40s, I'm going back and doing this show.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_06]: And it just feels like revisiting my childhood all over again.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_06]: It's a very special thing.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_06]: That's who are your characters, your X-Men characters?
- 8:31[SPEAKER_03]: In a frosty is an absolute massive one for me.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a style icon, uh, obviously.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_06]: So spiral and Emma, that's a very particular vibe.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah Emma Emma is she resonates with me and that she's this person who has this reputation for being bad, but she's always actually trying to do the right thing.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_03]: She's just very blunt and stand-offish about it and sometimes you've got to do the wrong thing to do the right thing.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_03]: I suppose.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_03]: Also she's hard as hell.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_03]: Um, and growing up, I was absolutely adored, broke, you know, I've always had this, you know, I'm trans like I've had this funny stuff around, you know, my body and around, you know, physical contact so this character who couldn't touch anybody.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_03]: That obviously connected with me even if I didn't really understand why and rogue is the character that as changes have kind of come to her over the years those changes have stuck when they don't always for a lot of other characters so that's I think I think that's something.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_06]: It's been a wild thing through my show to befriended a lot of comic book professionals.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_06]: Linor Zan, who does the Voice of Rogue is a Fred now, who I adore.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_06]: She's a huge trans advocate and she very much knows be a you can't touch me or I'll take your life force energy and how that resonates with the queer community.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_06]: And if you've read the recent Emma Frost limited series from just this like last few months, have you read that five issue limited?
- 9:58[SPEAKER_03]: You know what?
- 9:59[SPEAKER_03]: I just grabbed the last issue the other day and I haven't cracked into it yet.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_06]: I'm going to give you, I'm going to give you some insight before you pick it up.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_06]: So I have not had the writer on the show, but I did get to talk to her Amy in New York last year for a long time about the series.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_06]: And she wrote Emma as a trans woman.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_06]: Now it's not canon, but the way she approaches Emma in the series is from a trans female perspective, which is going to make it really special for you as you go.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_06]: It's good.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_03]: That's a bit of fan-cannon for a long time and there's like even there was some implications in some of Morrison's notes I think from the Morrison era when they were working on new X-Men that you know like the idea ended up on the cutting room floor But it you know this there was something there there's vibes
- 10:43[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there's always, there's always been vibes, you know, she's a character who's made herself into the most perfect version of herself based on like if you read that old Emma Frost ongoing from like when's that 2003 is she like she just looks like this completely different character and it's it's not a good series.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not going to go on to defend that series, but you're about to tell me all our friends with that right or two.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_03]: I don't remember who wrote
- 11:08[SPEAKER_06]: I am, Carl Ballers.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_06]: It's a black man writing a white woman and it's, this is funny, you could go back and listen to my interview with Carl Ballers about this.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_06]: So he was given the instruction by Marvel to write it as like an all-ages family friendly book, which he had to do and they wouldn't like let him use the Hellfire Club because they felt like that was too dark, but then they slapped all these like pornographic covers on the front.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_06]: of the book, it's crazy, it's a crazy interview, go back and listen to my interview.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_03]: I have to listen to that now.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_03]: Look, it's been a while since I read it, but the craziest thing about it is that all those like bunkers saucy
- 11:45[SPEAKER_03]: covers like the ones where she's like Emma Frost Emma Frost are on the issues where she's like a teenager and she's got like her dark hair and her school uniform and stuff and then it gets to the second half of the series and it swaps over and she's died her hair blonde in the second half of the series and all of a sudden we're back at school girl Emma on those covers.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_03]: I can't I can't work it out.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_06]: Right hand was not talking to the left hand per se.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_06]: Now, Shani, you're approximately 19 from the way I can judge things, but it's probably everybody about your intro to this series.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_06]: Did you connect to any particular characters when you were originally watching the shows of the movies?
- 12:17[SPEAKER_06]: And what's it been like for you to jump into the Claremont world from a 2026 perspective?
- 12:21[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, well, you know, as a 19-year-old, like we had to get past the age gap and stuff, but no, I am 35 as well.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_04]: But yes, I think me and Beth started in a similar place in that the original 90s cartoon was absolutely my entry point.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_04]: And same sort of thing, like I just had this feeling when I watched it, that really changed my brain chemistry.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_04]: Just this bunch of misfits who were criticized from the outside world, but banding together into this found family, just resonated with me in a really profound way that I just couldn't put my finger on for a really long time.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_04]: original show like Gambit was my boy of course like he's cool as hell he throws exploiting cards he's got a cool trench part just like I loved everything about him we love a fashion moment for sure
- 13:12[SPEAKER_04]: I've always loved a fashion limer.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_04]: That's why Jubilee was my other one from there, like, yeah, absolutely clean.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_04]: Storm has always been there as well, as just this literal force of nature who I have always loved.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_04]: So I was overjoyed going into the Klamont era that at least one of those characters was here with Storm's introduction.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_04]: And,
- 13:35[SPEAKER_04]: I was telling Beth, I was trying to manage my expectations because I know that writing in the 70s, particularly comic writing, I had this sort of idea of what it was, and I'm like, okay, I'm not going to go into this expecting Shakespeare.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_04]: Little did I know that,
- 13:54[SPEAKER_04]: Later on Shakespeare may be main influences Shakespeare and literally quotes Shakespeare in like the second issue that we read So that has been like such a joy that there are so many beautifully character moments in prose in these comics that I had no idea that I was in for
- 14:13[SPEAKER_04]: and I've just pulled any love.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_06]: It's so much fun.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_06]: I have spending a lot of time in the early 70s on my show right now and I take a very academic lens and in these early 70s in America right when Chris Climart was taking over the books there were all these kind of social issues shifting here.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_06]: So the idea of like Russia and the Cold War and where Colossus fits into that.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_06]: The idea of queer rights and civil rights and watching the advent of characters like Luke Cage and the Falcon and everybody popping up.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_06]: Female lead solo titles happening at this time because of second wave feminism like Spider-Woman and Ms. Marvel.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_06]: And then you watch like what happens with Storm and Gene Gray when Claremont gets his hands on powerful women poorer tropes were relaxed.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_06]: So like before a certain point, you couldn't say the word zombie in a comic.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_06]: But now, you know, the X-Men are fighting like, cure off the dam.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_06]: Doesn't like it's like the soundtrack that I've heard you guys talking about, right?
- 15:03[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that's our boy, here off the shatter of soul.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_06]: Great, right, issue.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_06]: So yeah, it's really fun to put all of this into context.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_06]: Now, I'm going to take you guys all over the pop culture world as we are reviewing different genres of the X-Men.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_06]: I'm going to presume none of you, or neither of you had seen any of these iterations of the X-Men before.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_06]: These are crazy, crazy journeys.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_06]: Beth, would you rather live in the world of the X-Bugs,
- 15:32[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, honest to God.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_03]: I love that mobile-life series like that's where I want to be and shunny same question Where would you live?
- 15:39[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I mean if I lived in Alegay to Loki world would I get to be one of those you Alegay it is?
- 15:46[SPEAKER_06]: Absolutely.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_04]: Well, oh, yeah, it's gonna have to be Alegay to welcome me.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, it was say you got to pick the cute one.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_03]: I got to pick the one where there's will be drama and action because I want the tea.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_03]: I want the gossip
- 15:57[SPEAKER_06]: I'm going to go live in the world of the uncanny ex bugs, which I find delightfully stupid.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_06]: Okay, so Marvel, we're not going to do a ton of set up here, but Marvel in the mid 80s is really capturing a ton of Saturday morning cartoon energy.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_06]: Go look at any American cartoon from like 1985 through 1992.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_06]: and you're gonna find cute bordering on gross.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_06]: So you jump from like the world of like the Smurfs and the gummy bears, and by the time you get into the early 90s, we're more like renn and stimpy and beat us in butthead, and it's all like boobs and butts and farts and like really stupid humor, and
- 16:34[SPEAKER_06]: Things really shifted the simpsons start right in the middle of all of this so like animation is going through a big revolution and Marvel has a huge line of parody comics one of the most famous which we've seen visited in the spider man movies and even in recent series is the character Peter Parker the spectacular spider ham
- 16:52[SPEAKER_06]: where he lives in a world of all cartoon animals and every character is a parody of something else.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_06]: Sometimes really uncomfortable, like the red skull is the red gold.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_06]: And Captain America is Captain America cat, right?
- 17:05[SPEAKER_06]: Like there's all these little funny versions of this.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_06]: Now, in the end of Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham number two, which is published in 1985, a guy named Steve Miller wrote a very short story featuring the uncanny ex-bugs.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_06]: I do not know a lot about Steve, I've been looking for information.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_06]: The only thing I can find outside of his Marvel credits is that he also wrote some episodes of Ran and Stimby.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_06]: So I truly know not like very little about him, but he created a ton of like animal versions of characters.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_06]: He also did some like Marvel tales, which is also just a parody of a lot of different things with like backup stories, featuring characters like the illegal eagle.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_06]: So just like very silly animal versions.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_06]: And we love to do this to our characters.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_06]: We love like Muppet Babies, where we have a baby version, which is the X Babies.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_06]: Or like the BAMS from Nightcrawler, we love a QtC kitty's fairy tale moment anytime in our comics.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_06]: Do you guys like the QtC side of the X-Men when it shows up?
- 18:05[SPEAKER_03]: You haven't had a lot of exposure to this kind of stuff yet, Shawnee.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_03]: Have you?
- 18:08[SPEAKER_03]: Like, we haven't hit any of that.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_03]: The X-Babies are always get a pop out of me.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_03]: you know.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_03]: All right, it's a wrestling term.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I love that stuff.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_03]: Like that's those standalone kiddie spirit has a great example, like it's a story that it just gives this standalone story that still.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_03]: appeals to kids, you know, and we forget that like initially comic books were a medium for children and like a lot of kids get into them and learn about themes and continue to engage with them as they mature but a lot of those
- 18:51[SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, I, I, I love seeing that kind of stuff, particularly in on older comics.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know that it translates as easily to a modern writing style.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_06]: In our X-Men books, we get characters like Lockheed or Jeff the Landshark or Alligator Loki or the Bamf dolls.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_06]: Or even characters like doop or warlock that kind of fall into this.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_06]: It's like a loony tune, kind of silly energy about them.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_06]: And that's what Spider-Ham is like, right?
- 19:19[SPEAKER_06]: If you've seen into the Spiderverse, we've got like old aged up Peter Parker, and that we've got Spider-Ham swinging around with his picnodes, right?
- 19:25[SPEAKER_04]: Well, yeah, my only exposure, like I've seen into the spiderverse, so I did appreciate the spider hand inclusion there and how they ducts opposed it against the most serious element.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, this was my first real exposure to it.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_04]: So I'm really only dealing with like the OG forms of the X-Men or Marvel characters begin with.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_04]: I haven't really dipped my child into the wacky,
- 19:53[SPEAKER_06]: So for a context for everybody and this is made way later than some people may think if you've ever seen the animated films and or a bug's life, those films did not come out until 1998 this is 1985 so much much earlier I was seven and then my late 40s of everyone I can own it but this is a this is a book I would have picked up off the shelf
- 20:13[SPEAKER_06]: So we're going to mostly just analyze the last five pages of Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham number two, which is the uncanny ex-bugs feature.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_06]: The tagline, we have little bugs all over the page.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_06]: It's written and drawn by Steve Malor.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_06]: They're uncanny, they're bugs, they're hyphenated.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_06]: Mutant insects, banded together for no particular reason.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_06]: And we open on our five feature characters, Beth, we you tell us about Cyclops.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_06]: who yells on the first panel.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_06]: Hurry, X-Men Professor X-Bug is summoning us telepathically.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_03]: I cannot for the life of me.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_03]: Workout, what kind of bug Cyclops is meant to be here?
- 20:51[SPEAKER_03]: But we have too little antennae popping out the top of his mask.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_03]: Because these costumes covering most of his body, it's the standard Cyclops costume that we got green skin and a very long nose.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_03]: No, no wings.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_03]: So I don't know, is he some kind of grab or sluggle or something?
- 21:08[SPEAKER_03]: He's got arms and legs.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know clue what Cyclops is meant to be here.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_04]: But he's specific bugs or they just like buggy in general.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_06]: They're bug-ish.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_06]: They're bug-lank.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I guess you're right like I'm like I'm looking over at stole.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_03]: I'm getting ahead of myself I'm looking over at storm over there.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like storms going to be a fly right, but I'm coming back to cycle up here And I'm like maybe maybe they're all the same things.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_06]: They all have antennas and like fly eyes like the design of the fly eyes But then every character is just kind of individually designed a shunny tell us about Colossus
- 21:43[SPEAKER_04]: Colossus has got a big, big doofy tongue hanging out of his mouth.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_04]: It's the same sort of thing.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_04]: He's got his little antenna.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_04]: He's definitely been, what's the term when a character is like not super intelligent.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_04]: And so then when they're in a simplified form, they just come.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_04]: plate dumb dumb.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, he's very like, uh, blah, like, through this whole thing.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_06]: He has also been skipping leg day.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_06]: He's like, big old barrel up top and like teeny tiny bits and teeny tiny legs, uh, do, do, do, feed, do, feed version.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_06]: Uh, I will describe Knight Crawler.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_06]: Knight Crawler is a little blue, Bampie guy who instead of Bamping, he just says, poop, like he's clearly farting in like every panel.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_06]: There's a, there's a little puff of smoke behind his butt and around him and the sound effect is poop.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_06]: So he has like, fart powers in this world, but still three fingers and three toes.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_06]: And like, a little teeny mouse tail.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_04]: Now I was gonna say I didn't notice that he had his canonical three digits.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_04]: So I like that detail.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_03]: If you're gonna look like he's like, the way that they've laid him out, like the bottom of his blue body almost looks like it's meant to be like like a like a diaper or something.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I can't quite work out what's meant to be going
- 22:58[SPEAKER_06]: Big or bad, he's adorable.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_06]: It's Shiny tell us about Wolverine.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so Wolverine has jawline almost as big as Colossus, which is impressive.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_04]: And he's got massive fists with a little spike thumb.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_03]: My man's all hands.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_03]: He's like a ludicrous in the move-back video.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_06]: He also has his hands are huge like the size of his head.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_06]: He has a weird version of his mask here that's so odd.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_06]: It just I don't know.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_06]: It looks like a character from like fat Albert.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_06]: If you look up those characters from the 80s, they're tuned.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_03]: And then Beth, yes, I know the exact character talk.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, with the eye holes.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_06]: Yes, that's what it sounds like.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_06]: And then we have our best character.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_06]: Although, wow,
- 23:41[SPEAKER_03]: Well, let's be real storms eating here.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_03]: We've got a bit of a boob tube.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_03]: What do you reckon, Shorty?
- 23:49[SPEAKER_03]: Like a placet going on.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't really look like her standard costume.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_03]: But we got a bit of a placet.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_03]: We got some beautiful white boots.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_03]: We got the white gloves to match.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_03]: And she still got a cape on there.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_03]: But I will note she's not wearing her traditional white costume.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_03]: It's this weird beige sort of color.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_06]: It's giving like she's very bucksome.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_06]: She's very, she's like a sexy little green bug with the roundest red mouth and like a little whispers of white hair.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_06]: They're trying to make her sexy, which is such a weird thing.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_06]: She's the smurf at Altma team.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_03]: Very, very odd.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_03]: Is this still in the Mohawk stormy, right?
- 24:27[SPEAKER_03]: You reckon?
- 24:27[SPEAKER_03]: Do you reckon?
- 24:28[SPEAKER_03]: Yep, this is her hair like that.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_06]: Well, and this is the costume that matches her Mohawk era when she's in that like black number where it's like her shoulders and the tops of her boobs are out, you know?
- 24:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, this um, like I definitely agree with you that that's what they go and fall here, but again, like they they could have colored it in the black leather to make that um, to make that apparent.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_03]: I'm just I'm just not getting it.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_03]: I guess.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_06]: So Professor X in this world is in earthworm with glasses and a graduation cap and okay, that's fine.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_06]: So they all come screeching to a halt in front of front of professor X who says greetings ex-bugs.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_06]: I have an important mission for you.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_06]: And then he leaves them to the insectoscope room.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_06]: And there's all these little things worked into these panels.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_06]: Pitch two storms boobs are huge, as she like leans back.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_06]: Nightcrollers reading a true bug magazine while he farts.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_06]: They all follow him into the the room and Professor X bug says our arch enemy mag Squito the magnetic mosquitoes on a rampage.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_06]: We must stop him and we see a TV screen image of mag Squito which is it just sounds like a dirty sex word that I just I just mag Squito makes me uncomfortable
- 25:43[SPEAKER_06]: And he's like just moving metal everywhere.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, well, uh, to help assist us with his powers.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_04]: He's got a giant magnet on his head in place of his usual little horns, which is helpful here.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_04]: He's wearing his classic, I think, Brittany of Amrong.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know like all the classic uniforms, but the purple and red has been pretty consistent.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_04]: from his get go right.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_06]: Yes, yeah, but this is this is like his his head looks like a bell.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_06]: There's like a full hat that's like his nose has like a like the helmet has a place for his long nose to go and then there's a magnet on top truly wild design.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_06]: The X-Men are the X-Bug's Rush to the X-Buggy, and they see in the bottom corner, hey, look, it's the micro-nuts.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_06]: The micro-nuts were huge property of Marvel in the late 80s, so we see versions of the micro-nuts in the bottom corner.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_06]: Colossus fully picks up Cyclops and Storm in this image, and Storm's asses out like round and cracked.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_06]: as a net crawler's farting behind her, and net crawler is like smoking a cigarette, which is this is a wild panel.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_06]: There's so much going on here.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like guys who is who it's Steve, my boy.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_03]: Who is this for?
- 26:58[SPEAKER_03]: Because I'm looking at like saucy storm over here, and I'm like, is this, is this meant to be funnier?
- 27:04[SPEAKER_03]: Is this you thing, dude?
- 27:05[SPEAKER_04]: This is very, like, um, this is like Max pleasure meets our crumb.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_04]: Like that, it's not really, if there's a woman character, they're going to be stuck on their chest and their butt.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_04]: Um, like come on transition goals.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_03]: Literally right, but not really just like lighting up in the background to like every panel here They're they're giving not crawl like a new little activity to do and it's like I get that It's a parody call for this weird thing about like reading a parody comic from 40 years ago It's like there's clearly a lot of parodies of stuff from the time and I don't know what where the true bug magazine is just like something nonsense Or if it's a reference to something from the 80s.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_03]: I assume it's right
- 27:49[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I just feel like to true crime, I suppose.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_03]: I assume like 3D movies might have been sort of back at the time.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_03]: And that's why Nightcroll is wearing 3D glasses when he's looking at the magneto screen.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_03]: Like, it's all this, um, we had stuff that like, it's.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_03]: It's a parody of like all things outside the X-Men, but then we've got X-Men doing stuff that isn't like a parody of what their character is necessarily.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_06]: It's the weirdest animation with the worst cartoon voices and like really odd transitions.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_06]: It's like this would be a terrible cartoon, but we would love it because it's kept.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_06]: So the Xbox all pile into one red car, net crawler, farts and every panel.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_06]: That car is not working, so they switch from an X buggy to an X checker, which looks more like a taxi cab, like the taxi cab from who framed Roger Rabbit.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_06]: And as they're driving, there's little bugs, civilians, one of them is selling on newspaper.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_06]: extra, extra, which Cyclops says, who's the guy waving and Storm, who appears to be asleep, says that's my ex boyfriend as a little bug says, hi, a tuts and that man could not get Storm, that's all I'm saying.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_04]: You know what I'm saying?
- 28:58[SPEAKER_04]: Never date these backwards cat fuck boy.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_03]: Come on, but it's common dude, like if you're gonna put a fit together, it takes more than a hat.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_06]: So we moved to a scene of magnetic devastation and we say expugs attack.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_06]: Okay, Shoney, we have a costume change in this first panel where the expugs are rushing toward Magsquito.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_04]: I wasn't really like understanding exactly what was happening here.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_04]: They're all wearing some different accoutrements.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_04]: Cyclops has got like a little baby crocket.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_04]: for Cap, Nightcrawler's straight-up got a gun with a Rambo headband.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_04]: Given Rambo being done, it's still fighting.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_04]: Storms got like viking, Esk sort of helmet.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_04]: Cyclops is going full century and with it, and Wolverine's just got a pot on you.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_06]: And as the pot on his head, and then they just kick mags,
- 29:58[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, we got Magneto immediately slicing McSquito up.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_03]: That feels like it should have come last.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_03]: Ah, because he's fully back together in time for Kurt to poke him in the eyes while still farting.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, my god, are the fights like the brimstone when he teleports?
- 30:16[SPEAKER_02]: Is that the joke?
- 30:17[SPEAKER_03]: You have, I only just piece this together.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not cut out for this parody business chat.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_03]: Then we got stormed absolutely new king him out of the sky with a lightning bolt and we just see McSquitos face in the lightning bolt Then we got my boy slim my boyfriend absolutely blowing a McSquitos away with a zap and finally we get a PD pure heart bonking him on the head
- 30:43[SPEAKER_06]: Colossus's tongue is out, but he also has like a huge pile of mucous rolling down his chin from his nose.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_06]: It's so gross.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_06]: On the final page, Professor X says, you're finished McSquida and I'll clean up this mess.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_06]: And he's like, you idiot, it's I've gone straight and he has actually opened a junkyard.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_06]: He's in the scrap metal business and they're all astounded and they run away whoops as he throws cans at them and are they're off to a new adventure.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_06]: final issue of the Spectacular Spider-Ham in the latter half.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_06]: There's a lot of like that shaming in this universe.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_06]: If you read the earlier tale, it's uncomfortable.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_06]: I don't love that.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_03]: I read it.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_03]: I did not care for us.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_06]: 80s humor.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_06]: Not my favorite.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_06]: But in the end of this one, the backup story also by Mike Miller and Steve Miller.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_06]: So presumably, brothers.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_06]: Uh, this is the secret furs, which is a parody of the secret wars.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_06]: We have characters like Duck Durdum and Iron Mouse.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_06]: Uh, so there's all these different characters running around in a world where Hulk Bunny, who is Bruce Banner in his other form, is kind of leading everyone into the world where the B yonder lives, and we have another bug character.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_06]: Uh, I don't know if Shani knows it all who the beyond is.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_06]: It's a godlike character who pulls all the heroes and do a crazy adventure in the 80s.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_06]: So secret for secret for us is a playoff of secret wars.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_06]: Now I'm just going to point out some silly moments here.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_06]: We have the loot cage who looks like goofy here, pounding Magsquitos hat down.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_06]: We see a magazine called The Play Bee, which is a sum of like presumably naked bees.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_06]: Uh, like in the form of playboy.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_06]: We see a cartoon version of the hate manga yanking out Captain America's tongue truly just some wild shit we're going to skip through a lot of this uh everybody's fighting everybody's acting crazy and then the Beyonder opens a television show
- 32:40[SPEAKER_06]: where he's interviewing different guests.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_06]: It's like Dr. Octopussycat, which is a cute version of that.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_06]: You'll notice to his left is a dear devil and in front of him the king pig and coctor doom, the alligator doctor doom over off to the side.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_06]: Uh, we finally land where he's interviewing Colossus and uh, we have a kitty bug who shows up here.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_06]: Uh, Sean, do you know who kitty pride is?
- 33:05[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, I'm loosely familiar with kitty pride, basically.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_06]: So, infamously, Claremont has like 13 year old kitty pride fallen love with like 1819 year old Colossus all through the 80s.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_06]: It's like a kind of an uncomfortable romance for people to read about now, but that's being played off of here.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, so this was something when we first started into the Clamon era, I was like, I love Colossus.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_04]: He's such a sweetie, like he's do protective storm, but like he's hunting the right place.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_04]: And Beth was just like giving me this little like, yeah, he isn't here the whole time.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_04]: And I just had to get it out of about this storyline that happened.
- 33:41[SPEAKER_04]: So now I'm not looking forward to this coming, but yeah, we have pluses here.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_04]: He's saying
- 33:51[SPEAKER_04]: Um, and Katie wants to, but is saying, uh, they can't because of how jealous Aurora bug and Wolverine bug uh, so now things get weird.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_06]: They start kissing and you know, weird or versions of Wolverine and storm walk in, uh, Wolverine apparently is dating Sprite and, uh, Aurora was apparently dating Colossus.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_06]: So they get in a big fight and end up with black eyes.
- 34:16[SPEAKER_06]: Uh, and then the dazzler, the B dazzler shows up singing some weird song with a chainsaw on a microphone in your hand and then we have a cute little like fuzzy bear version of the thing beating up Dr. Doop, it just goes crazy.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_03]: Well, first of all, and I said this, what I was messaging you.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_03]: I love the dazzler outfit.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_03]: out of all these expugs be desolate and be desolate brilliant name uh is the cutest and she gets one panel uh i can't tell if the song is a parody of stuff i don't think so i looked it up yeah it's i don't know but it's you know it's that cool kind of like more rock and roll outfit that she had you know as we came out of the uh
- 34:56[SPEAKER_03]: the disco era, but with their own twist, the whole, um, uh, X, I get the way of playing on the X men soap opera tendencies here.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_03]: That's what we're parodying, uh, but like the parody that doesn't necessarily reflect like the dynamic of the comic takes something that is like, I'm not sure that like this is when's this one?
- 35:17[SPEAKER_03]: 1986, if the other one's 1989.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_03]: they're about.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_03]: Like it, it really seemed like at the time.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_03]: Now we look back at Colossus and Kitty and we're like, yeah, that's gross.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_03]: And it makes it really, it key to read.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_03]: It seems like at the time from everything I've read back then.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_03]: Nobody really felt twice about it back then.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_03]: So I don't know necessarily that they're criticizing the Kitty and Peter relationship, even though they should be, but they've decided to make it even we at a buy.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_06]: We also has the worst design.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_06]: She's just like a little, like, an skinny black suit, right?
- 35:47[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, she's just got a little shaggy hash, not even like a superhero outfit, but you know at the time was she, you know, like blue jumpsuits sort of probably.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's like, we could, I feel like these got drawn very quickly.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_06]: Unpopular theory.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_06]: Do you think that the B-dazzler was the lead model in the play B this month in the, the B world?
- 36:11[SPEAKER_06]: We have nude, nude, B-dazzler in the magazine.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_04]: She's got to leave.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_03]: We don't have any other beaures.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_03]: She's got to be.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, my girl's spending a lot of play.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_03]: But you know what, if that's what she's got to do, you know what, nothing but respect for you does.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_03]: You do whatever you got to do.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, just these whole dynamic in this scene is weird.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, Choni and I were talking about this last night when we went out for dinner.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_03]: We're like the whole like the parodies in these issues, it's got like mad magazine energy.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, like we both tried to rate Mad Magazine as teenagers and we're like, I think it's funny, that's why I'm reading it, but I can't actually think of what like I maybe I don't actually think that it is funny.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_03]: It's like it's like it says this jokes, but I'm not laughing.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_06]: It is not meant for deep analysis.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_06]: This is the one we're going to spend the most time on, but I want to jump into two other animal worlds quickly.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_06]: One of them is alligator Loki.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_06]: If you guys watch the Loki series, there's an alligator alternate version of him that shows up there.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_06]: And then my dear friends Alyssa Wong and Bob Quinn get to launch the series on Marvel Infinity.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_06]: One of the closing issues, and they're just having fun in this kind of wordless comic.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_06]: The premise is that Loki has alligator Loki as his pet, very Jeff Delanchar, and it's just the series of misadventures on Earth 22311, which is the official designation for the alligator world.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_06]: Now, in this, we open on a lot of very cute art.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_06]: The title of the story is all the gators, so like everyone belongs.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_06]: And alligator Loki is coloring some pictures of different kinds of characters.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_06]: Now, Shani, on the third page, we see him design some very cute versions in crayon of our favorite characters.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_06]: Do you want to talk about these?
- 37:53[SPEAKER_06]: Yes, I do.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_06]: We're going to be like the same lineup.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_04]: So up the top we have a proud little four alligator and down the bottom we've got our little Colossus and nightcrawler alligator and next to them of course Wolverine and got some of it.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_06]: And do you like these little alligator versions?
- 38:11[SPEAKER_04]: I love them.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_04]: I am a huge fan, everything reptiles.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_04]: I always have my favorite thing to draw when I was little was snakes and lizards and stalks, but this is really scratching a particular age.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_06]: We go to the next page and we have Captain Marvel Iron Man Iron Fist,
- 38:29[SPEAKER_06]: which is a little cute purple sword one.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_03]: Hock on a little butterfly and telepathy coming around her head too, like the little representation of her telepathy, it's so cute.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_03]: That's so cute.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_03]: That's a little image of, um, alligator Loki with these little like flatten crayon because he's used so much grain.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_03]: That's my heart.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_03]: That's so adorable.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_06]: you.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_06]: Bob, Bob Quinn, the artist of this book has been on my show many times.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_06]: He's wonderful.
- 38:53[SPEAKER_06]: He's so fucking funny.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_06]: We see images of like Scarlet Witch Spider-Man and Beast poking up.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_06]: And then Loki is like, oh look at this world where alligator Loki wants to be.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_06]: And so he opens a portal because in the multiverse this is a thing at Marvel.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_06]: If you tell a story it exists out there somewhere in another universe.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_06]: Like there's it just becomes part of the
- 39:14[SPEAKER_06]: So they jump into a world where all of these characters exist.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_06]: And Shoddy talked to us about some of your favorite moments.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_06]: This is a wordless.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_06]: It's very cute as all the little hero alligators interact.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_04]: It is, and they are all fabulous.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_04]: My favorites have got to be a little duck to strange ones.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_04]: Still with these little mustache and go to looking hilarious on the Facebook alligator.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_04]: See, I love Nightcrawler because he's just like a little blue ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol' ol
- 40:02[SPEAKER_04]: human like the gators don't mix together and they're like right there yelling at each other words like the little of alligator crows that are following me around my favorite thing in this whole history.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_06]: We have moments of deliant shuddy has a hands-on face going on.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_06]: It's healthy.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_06]: So Odin ruins everything.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_06]: Loki has to take little Loki alligator Loki back to home where Thor and Frog Thor are waiting to give him some comfort and alligator Loki puts a picture of the four of them on the fridge to close out the issue.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_06]: A durable story.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_06]: I love these little alligator Loki comics, but there's alligator expert out there.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_03]: It's the long torsos for me.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_03]: Say, and the little alligator X man in their costumes, but they got these big long torsos because they're all agatists.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know, it's just so funny.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_03]: The little, um, Nikrola has this smug little smile on his face.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know, I just might, my heart's melting from the cuteness, you know.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_03]: It's just like, I was like a beautiful five minutes of my life reading this comment.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_06]: Okay, last one, and we're going to focus primarily on the X-Men characters in this one.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_06]: So not a super long discussion, but there's a world out there that exists called Earth 8101, which is the Marvel Apes verse where everyone is an A and it first shows up in 2008.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_06]: There is a little known mutant called the Gibbon who's a Spider-Man character.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_06]: I've done a Gibbon episode for those that might want to go listen for more.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_06]: His name is Marty Blank.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_06]: He gets transported into a world where he is not the only monkey person because he's a monkey mutant.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_06]: And everyone's a monkey.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_06]: And using terms that you guys like very much, this is a very metal book.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_06]: things go very quickly crazy.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_06]: More puns, for example, we have the ape ventures in this world, and there are worlds where if a human woman is here, like this woman Fiona fits you, she is hideous because she looks like a human and everyone else is a monkey.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_06]: Then we get zombie versions of Nazi ape characters in the form of old invaders coming back to
- 42:12[SPEAKER_06]: It ends up bleeding into our world so there's a four-issue limited series and then a whole bunch of one shots that follow this.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_06]: And the ape verse has been visited multiple times, including with one of Spider-Man parody, who's called the Spider-Monkey here, who has teamed up with like Spider-Ham and Spider-Man in our main universe.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_06]: Before we get to some of the X-Men parodies, that you seem to particularly enjoy this kind of denser series.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_06]: Talk to everybody about what you loved about the Marvely Appesline by Carl Kessel
- 42:41[SPEAKER_03]: When you like when I messes you this when I just started reading it I'd read like the first issue and I'm like what the hell Chad like why is why is this a good comic
- 42:50[SPEAKER_03]: it is so like story dense like and the the start is it really made me sympathize with given like it's uh because he's you know i'm i love a character who's like a character who's done bad things in the past and he's trying to redeem himself and they've been given is one of Marvel's earliest mutants he's an old spider-man character but he's never had anything to do with the X-Men.
- 43:14[SPEAKER_03]: It's and just every every time I turn to page like I'm like of course, that's happening.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_03]: It makes like it makes perfect sense with the setup like the setup in this comic is really good that it kind of pays off everything as it goes.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_03]: I will say though a lot of the eight puns are that they're just so invested in the fact fact that I guess apes say oook like oookay and a lot of the puns are just like, oh, doctor oook to push like.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_03]: That's the puns on Fantastic, but the story very enjoyable.
- 43:47[SPEAKER_06]: The roster of the ape vendors is Ms. Marvepe, Iron Mandrel, Thorangetang, Spidermanke, a character named Apex, who does exist in our world now.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_06]: Speedball, which is wild, who also came over to our world, Hawk Ape, and then just the vision in the wasp.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_06]: There's a couple of other parody characters, one of the funniest ones in the Fantastic Four, and the Human Torch is the
- 44:12[SPEAKER_06]: And then we meet the X simians, which is a a version of all of the X men and all of them just have regular name Cyclops ice man beast cylock night crawler storm, but the only one that has a different name is Colabas instead of Colossus we have Colabas.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_06]: And they're kind of in the background.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_06]: They're not a huge piece of the story.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_06]: The one that's the larger character through this series is the Wolverine eight who is also running around helping them fight the Nazis.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_06]: Wild wild journey.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_06]: There's one famous image of the Wolverine eight who is in a tree with curved hands and feet.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_06]: And instead of Klausi has bananas, I don't know if he's gonna be so funny.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_03]: Is that one of the, like, variant covers that are...
- 44:54[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, yes.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's huge era.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_03]: But reading through, like, the main story, the main mini series.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_03]: The ape Wolverine plays a role, you know, in the story.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_03]: It's where to go.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_03]: Like, it pretty much just looks like Wolverine.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_03]: this design like like for the most part yeah I would but if you told me that was normal Wolverine in amongst all the apes I believe it he just kind of has a monkey face and the regular costume man when he's always scowling too it's not like you can't he's always pulling the same face when he's uh regular Wolverine too it's like you can't necessarily uh necessarily tell I'll know like
- 45:33[SPEAKER_03]: seems to be some, this is at the end of I want to say is you too.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_03]: Like it seems to be some different kind of monkeys got a bit more of like that longer baboon face.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_03]: I guess while all the others just have that kind of generic ape face that most of the apes in this universe have.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_06]: Were you a little gagged by the reveal that the Nazi invader monkeys were zombies?
- 46:04[SPEAKER_06]: I will say that I loved it in issue three we have a backup story that plays again off of secret wars the watcher who's also in ape is like watching the beyond or mess with the heroes and we do have a wider shot where we get like new mutants versions of the apes
- 46:23[SPEAKER_06]: But they're all in the background.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_06]: There's a Rachel Summers, Magneto, Cannonball, Warlock, Wolves Bane, Mirage, Rogue.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_06]: They're all just kind of in a group shot, but they're canonically in this world.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_06]: And then they get involved in a slightly larger battle with the beyonder.
- 46:41[SPEAKER_06]: But not a lot happens.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_06]: It's a quick two-pager, but there's canonically the new mutants, apes, as well.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_06]: And I don't know if Shiny even knows who the new mutants are, so it's toss that in your way.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_03]: Wolf's Bank gets a little bit of dialogue though, like she introduces herself as Wolf's Bank.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_03]: She still has a Scottish accent, but yeah, she's got a little bit of dialogue talking to WCI man's name, Iron Man's name, Iron Man's name, Iron Man's name.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_03]: Iron Man's name.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_06]: And then in the back top of Issue 4, we get a wild story where the watcher pulls some characters from different timelines.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_06]: Lip from 299, which is the Marvel Future Properties
- 47:19[SPEAKER_06]: We have Nick Furry, Dr.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_06]: Strange, Ghost Rider, and then a Jean Grey, a who's also very busty.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_06]: We've got her red-headed ape woman.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_06]: She cries a little bit.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_06]: They're fighting Grey, Lactus.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_06]: It's very planet of the apes.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_06]: It's a kind of a silly story also, not a ton going on here, but if you need it, an ape galactus, fighting a Phoenix ape, here's your story for you.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_03]: Like, are they, I don't know much about the 299 universe, right?
- 47:47[SPEAKER_03]: I've never, I've read a bit of the Spider-Man, but like, is this fantastic for 299 that they're showing in the actual 299 universe?
- 47:58[SPEAKER_03]: No.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, this is completely made up.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_06]: They're just bringing a bunch of shit together for reasons.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_06]: I truly don't understand what the purpose of this particular story
- 48:08[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 48:08[SPEAKER_03]: Firstly, Nick Ferry in Saint-Name for the Nick Fury parody.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_03]: Also, Nick Ferry is a woman.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_03]: I, in this eight universe, so Nick Ferry, she's on the back of a eight ghost writer, 2099's Rocket Cycle.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_03]: That's just in a little sports brine and iPads, but you know, she, uh, she kept her dead
- 48:35[SPEAKER_06]: very.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_06]: So I want an a little bit of time on the variant covers, which is the weirdest thing.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_06]: So when Marvel Apes came out, every comic book being published in 2008 in a certain month by Marvel, got a variant ape cover.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_06]: And we're going to focus mostly on the X-Men ones, but if you guys want to point out any of them, that's fine.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_06]: We have to talk about cable number six.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_06]: which is a parody of the first appearance of cable when he shows up in new mutants and like the heads of the characters that he's impacting are all around and like reacting.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_06]: But in this version, everyone is in eight.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_06]: And then we have like the ape new mutants in the top corner box looking down.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_06]: This is a variant cover of cable number six by layfeld.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_06]: And it's wild, but the boom boom ape in particular is a really jarring.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_03]: I was going to say she ate with that lipstick.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_06]: She's having a bad day.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_03]: Looks like a boom boom is in all time of her may.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_03]: I freaking love boom man.
- 49:33[SPEAKER_03]: Like my my girl, you know, she's still she's a monkey, but she's still wanted to take some time to get the makeup nice.
- 49:40[SPEAKER_03]: Good on you girl.
- 49:40[SPEAKER_06]: We go a couple more pages.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_06]: We have a variance of Captain Britain in the MI-13 number five, where we have a giant Captain Britain like King Kong grabbing Megan and climbing up Big Ben.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely chaos.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_04]: I did not know who this was.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_04]: Many of these characters were the fact that it's in Britain and also I, uh, but I'm loving every second of it.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_03]: I freaking loved Captain Britain in MI 13 too when it was coming out like that was a sick comic Dracula lives in a castle on the moon and fires vampires it at earth from a space pirate ship out of like the cannons it's completely insane.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_06]: We've been doing script ratings with an all British queer cast of the early Captain Britain 70s books.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_06]: If you guys want to go listen on my show, wildly fun.
- 50:25[SPEAKER_06]: It's a good time.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_06]: I want to spend a moment on incredible Hercules parody from 121.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_06]: There's a Hercules ape dreaming about Nemora throwing him a banana split.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_06]: Which is just truly a wildly stupid cover.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_06]: We get one reading a bunch of group shots.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_06]: There's some Daredevil's.
- 50:44[SPEAKER_06]: There's some classic parodies.
- 50:46[SPEAKER_06]: There's a moon night.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_06]: One that's another that I want to point out is Ms. Marvel number 31 cover, which is the evolutionary chart with Carol Danvers slowly turning into an ape woman is so it's the evolution in reverse.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_04]: The dog, William, back dog, is funny.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_04]: We can't have apes without mentioning dogs.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_04]: They mentioned in the main marble aches plot line, I forget like someone saying like God help us or something, but they say Darwin help us.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_04]: So, chronically Darwin is God in this universe, which is interesting.
- 51:15[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, God, that maybe they got one of my favorite lines from the Marble Labs mini series, like right in the last issue.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_03]: Back on Earth.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_03]: Beatball has come back to Earth with Marty and the scientists and Marty says something about, you know, we have a saying on this planet that a hundred monkeys on a hundred type writers could write Shakespeare and Beatball says, yeah, well on my world, it just took one.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_02]: Mike, do you say to her?
- 51:45[SPEAKER_02]: So, monkey shakes beer, monkey Darwin, it all comes together.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_02]: It's freaking incredible.
- 51:49[SPEAKER_06]: I'm still getting to know you, but Beth, I'm assuming the, she hulk a rangatang, wait, lifting at the gym is giving particular Beth vibes somehow.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I'm a, I've only just got into like really working out.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, maybe I can get she hulk buff who knows.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_06]: And then, Shani, let's go a little farther.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_06]: We have this image of Wolverine I talked about with the banana claws.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah, it's fantastic.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_04]: He's got his banana claws, which what are they going to do?
- 52:14[SPEAKER_04]: He's got some real sharp teeth here as well in a real scale.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_04]: If those bananas are just going to mash against anybody, he swaps that.
- 52:21[SPEAKER_04]: But I haven't mentioned it.
- 52:23[SPEAKER_04]: It's come up on our part.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_04]: I love fun.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_04]: I've got, I'm still in joke jail for joking about how plus this has an iron lung.
- 52:30[SPEAKER_04]: So, many times.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_04]: Any, any pun, any substitution of a banana for a claw, because there's another moment in the issue where Nick Fury is like meant to be smoking a cigar, but he's just got a banana hanging out with me as well.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_04]: I love it.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_06]: So go to the next one.
- 52:45[SPEAKER_06]: We have a parody of X factor 35 by Boocook, which is a multiple man parody that's an actual cover, but it's a multiple man ape.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_06]: They do have the M tattoos over their eyes, and it's just every clone of multiple
- 52:58[SPEAKER_03]: Madrox.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_03]: That's the worst boy alive who I just love.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_03]: I'm conditionally, but I, uh, expect to investigate.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_03]: And that was as that comic was coming out.
- 53:10[SPEAKER_03]: I was mad for it.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_03]: So clearly, this is like after Madrox has like ended up in bishops.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_03]: future and been imprisoned and come back and then after that for the rest of the run he had the M tattoo on his his eye.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_03]: So that's pitching it in the run.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_03]: But like looking at this cover there's a cute little monkey eight mad rocks just up in the top left hand corner just poking onto the screen from the very corner and giving a little way that feels like me.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_03]: I love a photo box.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_06]: I'm the one in the like the middle that's like chewing on his own fingers very contemplative.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_04]: I like that.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_04]: I'm definitely on the file left in the middle of the page with a little tongue hanging out because like any excuse for like what I'm talking about is like got to get the tongue out there.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_06]: It's it's colossus bug as a Madrox 8 variant.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_06]: We then go to the young X-Men number 6 cover variant.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_06]: This is a wild series by Mark Guggenheim.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_06]: Well, Grimalkin' is cyvers.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_06]: So I think it's Grimalkin' in cyphor.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_06]: It might be Wolfkub and Cyphor.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_06]: But they're picking lice out of, once picking lice out of the others hair, just wild.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_06]: whole time.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_06]: How are we feeling as we've reviewed these bizarre animal parodies of our favorite characters?
- 54:35[SPEAKER_06]: Do we have any favorites?
- 54:36[SPEAKER_06]: I had you guys on for a stupid stupid episode.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_03]: Just I'm I'm here for the plot.
- 54:43[SPEAKER_03]: I'm here for the lore and I'm here for the thrill.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_03]: So any anytime somebody goes to me, I'm gonna draw every mobile character as an ape.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like go off gang.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_03]: Just just do it and I keep saying I had to
- 54:58[SPEAKER_04]: Like, because coming into this, it was wild enough that it's like, oh, yeah, they're marble characters, but they're all eight.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_04]: Not only are they eight.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_04]: They are vampire, so it's having a whole new element to it.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_04]: So I had a great time with this whole vampire Nazi ape, Steven.
- 55:14[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not a Nazi ape, it's not all that.
- 55:16[SPEAKER_04]: It's gonna bother them enough.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_04]: But favorite, favorite, like, I have to say that, like, the Ghost Rider ape, just being a flaming skull, but it's just like an ape skull.
- 55:26[SPEAKER_06]: Okay, if you brought one X-Men parody into the main Marvel universe to join the team from our reviews today, which one character would you bring over?
- 55:36[SPEAKER_03]: Be Dazzler and it's not even close because I have a complicated relationship with Dazzler, if she, if we have an alternate version of her on the team, that's a cute little bit maybe we'll see.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_04]: Shiny.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, it's gotta be, uh, eighth Wolverine.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_04]: I want to say normal Wolverine and a Wolverine constantly in competition with each other.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_06]: I kind of want MagSquito to make his way over.
- 56:00[SPEAKER_06]: I feel like this indestructible magnetic bug would wreak all kinds of chaos, but really my choice is a rural bug.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_06]: I want to see storm.
- 56:07[SPEAKER_06]: reacted to the little sexy bug version of herself.
- 56:10[SPEAKER_06]: It would be a hilarious story for me.
- 56:12[SPEAKER_06]: And my last question for you, too, if you were to write an X-Men animal parody in Australia, it could be like the X-Men as kangaroos versus the brotherhood of people mutants as koalas.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_06]: Do we have ideas here?
- 56:25[SPEAKER_06]: Am I selling you?
- 56:28[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's one of these things that whenever a band tour is Australia, they will put on their tour t-shirt like a koala or a kangaroo or a platypus or something and they're like I'm selling this shirt with Australian animals on it to Australians and I'm like gang I live here.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_03]: I don't it's for you that the band t-shirt has a kangaroo on it
- 56:53[SPEAKER_03]: I don't need, it's, I don't need Blink 1-8-2 Australian tour with an emu in a Tasmanian devil.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_03]: Actually, if it had a Tasmanian devil, that'd be dope.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but it's like, I'm gonna cook for me.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_03]: It's about the question.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_06]: Give me a quata instead.
- 57:10[SPEAKER_02]: That's it, like, have fun with it.
- 57:13[SPEAKER_02]: Where are the billbies?
- 57:14[SPEAKER_04]: This is where the final sins.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_04]: This is the thing about kangaroos, too, because they're so quickly essentially a failure because they are everywhere.
- 57:23[SPEAKER_04]: Like granted, I live a bit more ruraly.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_04]: but there are frequently kangaroos in my backyard.
- 57:29[SPEAKER_04]: Like they're a very, very common animal.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_06]: So kind of like a like a wait till deer for people in the states, yeah, yeah, I heard.
- 57:37[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you feel like if you wrote an Australian animal parody, it's not for Australians, then they're not going to want it, sorry.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_04]: OK, if we make it, that they're all snake.
- 57:49[SPEAKER_04]: They got all the kind of Loki.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_04]: I want to say everyone is snake.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_04]: Australia has a lot of different types of snakes.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_04]: How do they get around without um interesting plot point?
- 57:56[SPEAKER_04]: That's what I'm going to go for.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_06]: Snakes with Pfizer, Snakes with Claws, Exactly.
- 58:01[SPEAKER_03]: Villains, all Australia's most deadly fighters.
- 58:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, Snakes versus Pfizer is.
- 58:08[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, we have the funnel web.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_03]: We'll have the white tail.
- 58:10[SPEAKER_03]: We'll have the red back.
- 58:12[SPEAKER_03]: Red back.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_03]: I have the Huntsman.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_03]: It's ultimately harmless.
- 58:17[SPEAKER_06]: I have a door hanging out with you both today.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_06]: I think you're hilarious and delightful and I'm really happy to see you joining this like fun little queer X-Men sub community of nerds.
- 58:29[SPEAKER_06]: We're going to put this out in mid-marked on the show.
- 58:31[SPEAKER_06]: Tell everybody where they can find you online.
- 58:33[SPEAKER_06]: Is there anything you'd like to plug?
- 58:34[SPEAKER_06]: And do you have any final thoughts?
- 58:36[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, sure.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I think Beth can jump up this, but we're always going to be plugging at music as of much.
- 58:44[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's a short, short.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_03]: He likes to put me in charge of the projects.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_03]: We always, me and my girl, we always go to scheme.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be bubbling.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, by much, I don't think we're going to have like any new music out, but you know what, we put out two albums as best similar on the Lizzie's at the end of last year.
- 59:00[SPEAKER_03]: You wouldn't like it inside my head and outside you'd love me to death.
- 59:03[SPEAKER_03]: And that's only a few months ago.
- 59:04[SPEAKER_03]: So anyone out there probably going to be people listening to this who haven't heard of us before like go listen to our two albums.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_03]: I promise you they are really good.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_03]: X-Men, podcast, wherever you find podcasts, we're not just on YouTube anymore.
- 59:17[SPEAKER_03]: We are everywhere.
- 59:18[SPEAKER_03]: So give us, give us a listen and hear us say some even silly things than the stuff that we probably said today.
- 59:27[SPEAKER_03]: We always get caught up in the thrill of the moment and just keep your eye sealed.
- 59:32[SPEAKER_04]: We came on this episode.
- 59:34[SPEAKER_03]: If that said, yeah, probably.
- 59:37[SPEAKER_06]: We were talking about
- 59:40[SPEAKER_06]: We're run to you on my show to you.
- 59:42[SPEAKER_03]: I promise we often like film right at the end of the day like we'll start filming at like 8 p.m. And we both do a lot in a day.
- 59:51[SPEAKER_03]: So by the time we get to the end of it, like you girls, they're just bunkers.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_03]: And we just just go on off on absolute tangents like the most recent episode that went up yesterday.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_03]: I know that'll be months ago by the time this comes out.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_03]: But it's like, you know, we just went on a whole
- 1:00:10[SPEAKER_06]: There we go.
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_06]: The clip you posted just a couple of days ago where you're like the sole drink.
- 1:00:15[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, yeah.
- 1:00:17[UNKNOWN]: Yes.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_03]: Shorty loves any types of things that bit metal.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 1:00:24[SPEAKER_06]: Follow the show and grandma can underscore that on Instagram was prominently.
- 1:00:27[SPEAKER_06]: my own social media private because I got kiddos the two of you are welcome to follow me just ask the show's gonna end this month gimmick month in March with I always do you guys That a big academic trial or panel at the end of the month.
- 1:00:40[SPEAKER_06]: It's like my big macro episode So the end of this month is gonna be gimmicky villains The characters rampage and stilt man are getting the feature on the show and then April the theme for the whole month is gonna be gay cowboys So it's gonna get real queer up in here.
- 1:00:53[SPEAKER_06]: We're gonna have a great time.
- 1:00:55[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, yeah
- 1:00:55[SPEAKER_06]: Shotty and Beth what a delight to hang out with you.
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_06]: Well, thank you for your time and talents.
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_06]: I can't wait to hang out again.
- 1:01:01[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, they bless.
- 1:01:01[SPEAKER_03]: Thanks for having us.
- 1:01:02[SPEAKER_06]: All right, everybody.
- 1:01:03[SPEAKER_06]: Take care of yourselves in this crazy world.
- 1:01:05[SPEAKER_06]: It's dangerous out there.
- 1:01:06[SPEAKER_06]: Be safe.
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_06]: Live joyfully.
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_06]: We will see you all back here next time on the Great Morgan Lane show.
- 1:01:12[SPEAKER_06]: And now stay tuned for some thoughts on fascism as a special guest tonight talked about a red skull story and its modern applications.
- 1:01:22[SPEAKER_06]: I haven't talked yet today.
- 1:01:24[SPEAKER_06]: Julius Strecker was born in 1885 in Bavaria and trained as a school teacher before World War I.
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_06]: He served in the German army during the war and was decorated for bravery and experience the deepened his nationalist and anti-Semitic convictions.
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_06]: After Germany's defeat, he became active in far-right politics during the volatile years of the Vymar Republic.
- 1:01:45[SPEAKER_06]: Streccher joined Adolf Hitler's movement in the early 1920s and took part in the field Beer Hall Poosh of 1923, which we've talked about on the show before.
- 1:01:53[SPEAKER_06]: Unlike some early Nazis who later distanced themselves from Hitler, Streccher remained intensely loyal and was rewarded with influence in Franconia where he became gal later on Reed or Regional Party leader.
- 1:02:05[SPEAKER_06]: In 1923, Striker founded the Weekly News Paper, their Stoomer, STU-R-M-E-R.
- 1:02:11[SPEAKER_06]: The publication became notorious for its graphic caricatures and obsessive anti-Semitic rhetoric.
- 1:02:17[SPEAKER_06]: It portrayed Jews as criminals, sexual predators, parasites, and existential enemies of Germany.
- 1:02:23[SPEAKER_06]: Its style was crude and sensational, often featuring laureate illustrations and fabricated stories.
- 1:02:28[SPEAKER_06]: While not an official government paper, their stroller operated with Hitler's protection and was displayed publicly in glass cases known as stroller costume.
- 1:02:37[SPEAKER_06]: So they'd even those who did not purchase it would see its headlines and cartoons.
- 1:02:41[SPEAKER_06]: Strikers' writing was not subtle or intellectual.
- 1:02:44[SPEAKER_06]: It was designed to inflame emotion and normalize hostility.
- 1:02:47[SPEAKER_06]: During the 1930s, as the Nazi regime consolidated power, Strikers continued publishing increasingly extreme content.
- 1:02:54[SPEAKER_06]: So he did not hold a central administrative role in implementing the Holocaust.
- 1:02:59[SPEAKER_06]: His paper consistently advocated for the removal of Jews from German society, and later openly called for their annihilation.
- 1:03:05[SPEAKER_06]: Over time, even some within the Nazi party regarded him as embarrassing for his corruption and vulgarity.
- 1:03:11[SPEAKER_06]: In 1940, he was removed from his position as Galator, after accusations of financial misconduct, what a surprise, but he remained personally loyal to Hitler and continued publishing
- 1:03:23[SPEAKER_06]: After Germany's defeat in 1945, Streccher was arrested and brought before the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg.
- 1:03:29[SPEAKER_06]: He was not charged with direct participation in military planning or camp administration.
- 1:03:34[SPEAKER_06]: Instead, prosecutors focused on his sustained incitement to persecute and exterminate through propaganda.
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_06]: The tribunal concluded that his persistent public calls for destruction of Jews constituted crimes against humanity.
- 1:03:45[SPEAKER_06]: Streccher was convicted and executed in October 1946, a surprise ending to the story.
- 1:03:51[SPEAKER_06]: This case became one of the clearest examples of in-modern legal history of a propagandist how criminally responsible for the consequences of sustained hate-driven incitement.
- 1:04:00[SPEAKER_06]: Now we're going to jump to the world of uncanny Avengers.
- 1:04:03[SPEAKER_06]: This is a rick-remender book host of Avengers vs. X-Men where we mix.
- 1:04:07[SPEAKER_06]: Some Avengers and X-Men work together.
- 1:04:09[SPEAKER_06]: There are some infamous moments in this series.
- 1:04:11[SPEAKER_06]: It's say what you will a lot of rick-remender series.
- 1:04:13[SPEAKER_06]: This is a pretty fucking good book and there's some big amplified threats.
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_06]: We open with some quotes.
- 1:04:19[SPEAKER_06]: There is nothing surprising about the mutants behavior.
- 1:04:22[SPEAKER_06]: With their ranks core, they took extreme measures to rectify imminent extinction.
- 1:04:27[SPEAKER_06]: Evolution is no whisper, humming in the background.
- 1:04:29[SPEAKER_06]: It's the true substance of our every motive.
- 1:04:32[SPEAKER_06]: It is natural to safeguard one's lines from environmental competition.
- 1:04:36[SPEAKER_06]: Ah, but now the world has seen, felt the mutant boot on its neck, watched as mutants endangered all life to ensure their own propagation.
- 1:04:44[SPEAKER_06]: People do not fear tyranny, believe me, mankind will come for you, people.
- 1:04:49[SPEAKER_06]: Their hatred for you is too primal, too compelling to be denied.
- 1:04:53[SPEAKER_06]: hatred is natural.
- 1:04:54[SPEAKER_06]: hatred protects species from complacency in the face of its rivals.
- 1:04:58[SPEAKER_06]: It reminds you of one simple truth.
- 1:05:00[SPEAKER_06]: kill them before they kill you.
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_06]: We also get failure has always stemmed from looking to an outside source.
- 1:05:07[SPEAKER_06]: They will not be able to take this weapon from my grit.
- 1:05:10[SPEAKER_06]: I would be one with the power, with the brain of Charles Xavier, the red skull will eradicate the mutant menace.
- 1:05:18[SPEAKER_06]: In a horrifying beginning to this new series, the Red Skull cuts open the corpse of Xavier who was just killed by Cyclops with the Phoenix Force and removes his mutant brain.
- 1:05:27[SPEAKER_06]: He grafts it to his own presumably Artemisolo was involved and he assembles a brand new team of evil Nazi mutants called the S-Men.
- 1:05:34[SPEAKER_06]: I almost covered these guys when I did my show's last November on threats on Nazi themed threats.
- 1:05:40[SPEAKER_06]: These are mutants who believe in his cause, named the goat-faced girl, the living wind, the insect, Z, the turtle guy, dancing water, and maybe the most dangerous, honest John, who can basically be living propaganda.
- 1:05:53[SPEAKER_06]: So using these propaganda powers, the Red Skull Stokes Antimute and Furver through the news networks, increasing acts of violence against mutants across the world, he has Scarlet Witch stabbed and captured, he taunts her, claiming that he knows about Magneto during
- 1:06:10[SPEAKER_06]: to me in 1942 was me a months ago.
- 1:06:12[SPEAKER_06]: Hitler was meth-addicted, true, unhinged.
- 1:06:15[SPEAKER_06]: And they begin to suspect we would lose the war.
- 1:06:18[SPEAKER_06]: In preparation, my chief science officer Arnhem Zola recorded my consciousness within a cloned body, presented a bunker to revive in 70 years, when the world had forgotten me and my perceived atrocities.
- 1:06:28[SPEAKER_06]: So word led to believe this is a clone of the original red skull rather than the red skull himself.
- 1:06:32[SPEAKER_06]: I walk to an all-too familiar world stage.
- 1:06:35[SPEAKER_06]: In America, I saw the same embers that burned in Germany before the war.
- 1:06:39[SPEAKER_06]: A frightened population of total warshipers living in decline, flinching its shadows, or hungryly looking for someone to blame, mutants are the ultimate invading foreigners.
- 1:06:48[SPEAKER_06]: And he tries mentally influencing the Scarlet Witch into working with him to wipe out all mutants but Rook is there, and she escaped captivity and they find the brainless corpse of Xavier and the red skull and his S-Men attack.
- 1:06:58[SPEAKER_06]: Citizens, fellow human beings, I implore you wake up.
- 1:07:02[SPEAKER_06]: You walk by this monument of death and it suffocates your hearts.
- 1:07:05[SPEAKER_06]: It fills you with a terrible fear.
- 1:07:07[SPEAKER_06]: Who among us will be next?
- 1:07:08[SPEAKER_06]: There can be no safety living among creatures that bring down buildings without warning.
- 1:07:13[SPEAKER_06]: But what can we do?
- 1:07:14[SPEAKER_06]: What is the solution?
- 1:07:15[SPEAKER_06]: You are the solution.
- 1:07:16[SPEAKER_06]: You are the chemo therapy needed to eradicate this cancer growing in our midst.
- 1:07:21[SPEAKER_06]: You've heard the stories of everyday men and women taking it upon themselves.
- 1:07:24[SPEAKER_06]: To remove mutants from their neighborhoods, removing them, the only way possible, eradicating them like vermin, you anxiously hold on to hope that this blood shed will end and peace will find a way, it will not, it cannot, these mutants will attack again and again until we are dead.
- 1:07:40[SPEAKER_06]: To me, my S-Men, bring to me the villainous architects responsible for this heinous attack.
- 1:07:46[SPEAKER_06]: Let these good people here for themselves rise up, stand and be counted.
- 1:07:51[SPEAKER_06]: I unlock in you the sight.
- 1:07:53[SPEAKER_06]: Look close.
- 1:07:54[SPEAKER_06]: You can see the via X gene in their blood.
- 1:07:57[SPEAKER_06]: Your mankind's defenders, white blood cells, go forth, hunt and kill before invutations in the world weight.
- 1:08:04[SPEAKER_06]: this is crazy.
- 1:08:06[SPEAKER_06]: All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
- 1:08:10[SPEAKER_06]: He's bastardizing an anti Nazi quote.
- 1:08:13[SPEAKER_06]: We would do something right now.
- 1:08:14[SPEAKER_06]: We would protect our serbs and take back our future.
- 1:08:17[SPEAKER_06]: Okay, I know I only covered parts of this story, but let me welcome my friend Daniel Wilson to talk about uncanny Avengers numbers 1 through 3.
- 1:08:25[SPEAKER_06]: What a wild journey.
- 1:08:26[SPEAKER_06]: Daniel welcome my friend.
- 1:08:27[SPEAKER_06]: Are you a red skull fan?
- 1:08:29[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god, I love him.
- 1:08:30[SPEAKER_00]: He's such an aspiration.
- 1:08:31[SPEAKER_00]: No, not at all.
- 1:08:32[SPEAKER_00]: Get him in the bin, get him in the sea, get him in the space.
- 1:08:35[SPEAKER_00]: He needs like, he's, I would go as far as to say, he's that one of the few sort of Marvel villains that when he shows up in a book.
- 1:08:41[SPEAKER_00]: I see him then, I'm like, well, immediately, I can't wait until you get your face punched in.
- 1:08:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't want to hear what you've got to say because what you've got to say is bullshit, frankly.
- 1:08:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's, it's, it's,
- 1:08:49[SPEAKER_00]: it's beyond outdated and it's just terrifying that would sort of here and that retry coming around again isn't it?
- 1:08:55[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, so this book's over 20 years old at this point which is crazy and reading this.
- 1:08:59[SPEAKER_00]: Don't say that that day to me, that age is me so badly.
- 1:09:02[SPEAKER_06]: Oh no, I think these are my 10 years old actually.
- 1:09:04[SPEAKER_06]: That's bad.
- 1:09:06[SPEAKER_00]: That's good.
- 1:09:07[SPEAKER_06]: But I remember reading this, it's very smartly written, even though it's very, very, this is the series where Alex is like, I'm not a mutant, I'm just Alex, and like, dude.
- 1:09:15[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, I think it's a fantastic premise.
- 1:09:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was, I remember even thinking at the time, like, it was a book I was really excited for because it did feel a little bit like after so long of the X-Men being this endangered species of being they saw of, what, what is the respect?
- 1:09:30[SPEAKER_00]: Can we put some respect on the name, please?
- 1:09:32[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, I would have preferred Cyclops
- 1:09:36[SPEAKER_00]: It was sort of that sort of like that nod, that acknowledgement, and as much as I really liked it, I do remember thinking all the way through this run.
- 1:09:43[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, where's the physically mutated mutant?
- 1:09:45[SPEAKER_00]: Where's the, the visibly mutated mutant in this team?
- 1:09:48[SPEAKER_00]: So it does feel still very PR, very spin.
- 1:09:51[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of that.
- 1:09:52[SPEAKER_00]: Even in this early sort of like intro kind of thing to it.
- 1:09:55[SPEAKER_00]: It does feel like a very, very safe liner, but a safe liner can be good.
- 1:09:58[SPEAKER_00]: I, again, like I said, I remember being excited for the book because it had, you know, two of my favorite characters in it, Rogue, Scarlet Witch, fantastic.
- 1:10:05[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go.
- 1:10:05[SPEAKER_06]: It's a crazy fun lineup and the character moments in it are really powerful and it takes huge swings.
- 1:10:10[SPEAKER_06]: We go to the Apocalypse Twins and then the Axis event and all of the actions really, really crazy.
- 1:10:16[SPEAKER_06]: Some really good character moments for all of the characters.
- 1:10:18[SPEAKER_06]: It's smartly written even if it's not the people's favorite sometimes.
- 1:10:21[SPEAKER_06]: Reading this in 2026, it's a little different, however.
- 1:10:24[SPEAKER_06]: The walking propaganda with these just franchise-like racist mutants, it's like, oh no.
- 1:10:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's one of those things as well.
- 1:10:32[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, obviously looking at it.
- 1:10:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you as an American will be looking it through the lens of like this does not feel a million miles away from what we hear from the right, you know, in America, but similarly, as somebody British that sort of hit a little bit for me, as well.
- 1:10:45[SPEAKER_00]: It feels a lot sort of like like the culture that we've got going on here at the minute where there's a lot of sort of anti immigration, a lot of anti trans, a lot of anti LGBTQ stuff building and it does feel very, very sort of pressing in a way.
- 1:10:56[SPEAKER_00]: It feels really
- 1:10:57[SPEAKER_00]: quite scary that we're reading a comic from 10 years ago and we're actually seeing some of this in real life obviously without the superpowers but you know you've got this thing of like well society's shit everything's shit in the world we need somebody to blame who can we blame and it just it just hates that mark a little bit too close for home at the moment I feel and I'm I'm assuming you feel similarly
- 1:11:15[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, you know, they're the, they're honest John as the walking propaganda alone is really interesting honest John that phrase got its origins in like England in like the 17th century kind of meaning like someone who's very plain spoken and trustworthy but it kind of go and went tongue and cheek at a certain point so at a certain point it becomes kind of short hand for like the guy that says trust me, but you shouldn't trust him.
- 1:11:37[SPEAKER_06]: And for modern audiences, if you remember when Pinocchio is getting drawn up to the land where he gets turned into the donkey, the guy that pulls him away, which is basically a child trafficking story.
- 1:11:47[SPEAKER_06]: The guy that pulls him away is Honest John, the Fox guy.
- 1:11:50[SPEAKER_06]: So seeing this character as kind of this like weasely propaganda spreader while we see the influence of the red skull with Xavier's brain, truly wild storytelling, again, very smart.
- 1:12:01[SPEAKER_00]: I really, really enjoyed the Rogue Wanda stuff, so obviously they get separated quite early on from the bulk of the team.
- 1:12:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there's not even a team at the point where they're sort of absconded with.
- 1:12:12[SPEAKER_00]: But we've got that really nice sort of play-off with Rogue telling Mondage, you get the fuck away from Xavier's grave, you don't deserve to be here for him kind of thing.
- 1:12:20[SPEAKER_00]: And then obviously one does in a monologue pride and that is her very much being very respectful, very reverent and sort of like, you know, to do everything, I would be at your grave, the daughter of your enemy kind of thing.
- 1:12:28[SPEAKER_00]: And then obviously the bit later on when, you know, that in the red skills captivity and he's talking to wonder, and it's his initial sort of thought panel where he's referring to as, you know, the Jew in the gypsy and you just sort of like, it is wild to me that this guy who is just Nazi through and through is.
- 1:12:43[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, we're talking to somebody of both Jewish and Romani heritage, not that she's colored that way in these issues, but we'll get to that.
- 1:12:49[SPEAKER_00]: That's another matter, but you know, she, he's approaching this woman who is two things that he despises, but he's okay to use her as a weapon and it's just like that, that to me is just another layer of how awful he is as a person, the fictional director obviously, she's a, he's a Romani woman and yeah, and the dog of Magneo all in one and yeah, yeah, crazy.
- 1:13:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's just such a wild take to what I mean, it's almost like you might as well just walked up to and gone You and your emblematic of everything that I hate for no real reason that I'm an idiot And fancy killing some people for me, and you know, obviously with the brain powers of Xavier, she's just sort of like, okay, she or why not But that's not her.
- 1:13:27[SPEAKER_00]: That's not her.
- 1:13:28[SPEAKER_00]: We can figure that for that one But yeah, it's just I really love the rogue and wander based they just hit a bit differently Additionally the the Captain America deferring to havoc.
- 1:13:37[SPEAKER_00]: It was it's
- 1:13:38[SPEAKER_00]: I remember reading it at the time and thinking this feels so jarring, this feels so strange, but then I guess you've got Wolverine back in a havoc, which again feels like a wild take until you remember the meltdown book from God knows how many years ago that was.
- 1:13:50[SPEAKER_06]: Right, good back and see the trial of Alex numbers on my show.
- 1:13:53[SPEAKER_06]: Alex is the company man no matter what.
- 1:13:56[SPEAKER_06]: Alex, choice for Captain America, Alex was the public face of mutants working for the government during like Operation Zero Tolerance era.
- 1:14:04[SPEAKER_06]: He was the white guy running the team for a value of Cooper.
- 1:14:06[SPEAKER_06]: He was the yes man.
- 1:14:08[SPEAKER_06]: And Wolverine at this point has done a lot of stuff with Captain America and the Avengers and he's kind of playing the long game and
- 1:14:13[SPEAKER_06]: It's a really fun cast of characters.
- 1:14:16[SPEAKER_06]: It's again, very smartly written.
- 1:14:18[SPEAKER_06]: And the S-Men as awful as they are is a really fun team.
- 1:14:21[SPEAKER_06]: They're visually stunning.
- 1:14:22[SPEAKER_06]: They kind of mean marauders vibes.
- 1:14:24[SPEAKER_06]: It's just a group of kind of international reprehensible people.
- 1:14:29[SPEAKER_06]: And they are, they're cool in an interesting way.
- 1:14:32[SPEAKER_06]: I would love to do more conversations about the S-Men sometime.
- 1:14:34[SPEAKER_00]: They they crock me up so much like the initial thing where she's like was it your gifts are gone under the gaze of the goat face girl and you just sort of like who talks like that my love who talks like that It would powered you so to be so bold with your speech.
- 1:14:47[SPEAKER_06]: There's all these great moments to like they're based in Avengers mansion but rogue like hangs up a big picture of Charles Xavier.
- 1:14:54[SPEAKER_06]: Like, there's some really fun moments in this series.
- 1:14:56[SPEAKER_06]: Highly recommended, we're going to be spending a little bit of time in my next few red school conversations following up on this story, including in the next episode where Alex Seger is going to join me to talk about Issue 4, which is a very large red school story.
- 1:15:08[SPEAKER_06]: I opened with the idea of Julius Stracker and his kind of anti-Jewish messages.
- 1:15:13[SPEAKER_06]: This man was executed as a war criminal who did horrible horrible things.
- 1:15:18[SPEAKER_06]: It's interesting for me to try to think of the modern equivalent for that.
- 1:15:21[SPEAKER_06]: Like in America, I almost want to say it would be like Steve Bannon in the early Trump presidency using Breitbart to kind of throw out these propaganda messages.
- 1:15:28[SPEAKER_06]: And in England, I don't know if you would consider this the same, but like in the Boris Johnson Cabinet, I don't know if like dominant Cummings would qualify or that's a big statement from my name.
- 1:15:38[SPEAKER_00]: No, it is, but it's exactly that, it's like he thought that he, sorry, I could talk about this bit for ages and he actually with so you know the whole controversy with him.
- 1:15:47[SPEAKER_00]: I was living in that area at that time like where he came up to get his eyes tested during a lockdown.
- 1:15:53[SPEAKER_06]: If you want to talk about it briefly, many listeners may not be aware.
- 1:15:55[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
- 1:15:56[SPEAKER_00]: So Dominic Cummings basically had no actual political power within British government.
- 1:16:00[SPEAKER_00]: He wasn't an elected official.
- 1:16:01[SPEAKER_00]: He was sort of Boris Johnson's like spin guy like we're advising on things.
- 1:16:06[SPEAKER_00]: And for some reason, when he got caught breaching our COVID regulations, so our COVID guidance, which was obviously don't travel around the country because there's a virus that's killing people, you idiot.
- 1:16:16[SPEAKER_00]: He decided he would travel, I think, like 200 miles, 250 miles from London to a city called Durham, which is where he's originally from.
- 1:16:25[SPEAKER_00]: He was spotted by quite a few people just sort of about walking with his wife and his child, came up with all these excuses about it.
- 1:16:31[SPEAKER_00]: And obviously, during our lockdowns, I don't know if it was the same in the States, but there were actual prosecutions that were supposed to happen for reaching COVID.
- 1:16:38[SPEAKER_00]: So you're meant to get a fine document to get like, you know, I don't think an official police record or anything,
- 1:16:46[SPEAKER_00]: And he had this whole press conference in Downing Street, which is sort of our equivalent to the White House if you don't know, I remember the media just thinking like what just saying things like this is really uncommon.
- 1:16:55[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have advisors doing this.
- 1:16:57[SPEAKER_00]: This is for prime ministers.
- 1:16:58[SPEAKER_00]: Why have we got this guy who's being like this puppet master behind the scenes, giving this speech like we don't care me just resign pay your fine say you're in the wrong and is attitude.
- 1:17:06[SPEAKER_00]: It was just so belligerent and just it's just not a pleasant man.
- 1:17:10[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, horrible people who do horrible things.
- 1:17:14[SPEAKER_06]: And even those within the government are embarrassed by them.
- 1:17:16[SPEAKER_06]: And that's kind of happened in the Trump cabinet here.
- 1:17:18[SPEAKER_06]: Like anyone who was moderate can't get anymore.
- 1:17:20[SPEAKER_06]: You have to be sick of magic.
- 1:17:22[SPEAKER_06]: You have to be, I'm thinking of Mike Lindell and Rudy Giuliani and Pam Bondi.
- 1:17:26[SPEAKER_06]: And there's just this list of culprits at this point where we're also embarrassed and horrified.
- 1:17:31[SPEAKER_06]: I don't know if you had any thoughts on the Julius striker opening that I talked about the propaganda messaging
- 1:17:36[SPEAKER_00]: So I didn't actually know about this person at all.
- 1:17:38[SPEAKER_00]: But I find it very, very interesting that he's one of the people that was executed.
- 1:17:42[SPEAKER_00]: It seems very much sort of like that felt like send in a mess.
- 1:17:45[SPEAKER_00]: That feels very much like send in a message like that from from Nuremberg.
- 1:17:48[SPEAKER_00]: Sort of like, you know, if you're going to perpetuate this hate, if you're going to spout it to the level that you have that is instigated, x, y, and z, or you know, a fan of the flames kind of thing, there's going to be a consequence.
- 1:17:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's almost like chat shit, see what happens.
- 1:18:01[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, and then we think of the, I don't know, in America, for example, well, and in Britain too, the anti-immigrant kind of fervor that has stoked that's resulted in the ice stuff going on currently, which feels like the SS, which is the S-Men, and then we got like the anti-trans and anti-queer rhetoric.
- 1:18:14[SPEAKER_06]: And it's, it's, it's just, it's a rough time.
- 1:18:16[SPEAKER_06]: So that leads me to my final question for you, my friend.
- 1:18:18[SPEAKER_06]: How you doing in 2026?
- 1:18:20[SPEAKER_00]: Personally, I'm fine.
- 1:18:21[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just as somebody who, you know, I'm not an immigrant.
- 1:18:26[SPEAKER_00]: I am a white cisgender male.
- 1:18:27[SPEAKER_00]: I tend to not be as impacted by this sort of thing.
- 1:18:31[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, this is a very much me sort of understanding that I'm speaking from a place of privilege as well.
- 1:18:36[SPEAKER_00]: But obviously, I see what's happening.
- 1:18:37[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like it.
- 1:18:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's just bile.
- 1:18:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's just I just really wish that people would look around open their eyes wake up and realize that we are being pointed in a direction at easy targets so that we don't blame people actually ruin in things which are our governments either way if everybody it's our government's ruining it.
- 1:18:53[SPEAKER_06]: We're yeah one clear band to another and ocean between us uh I we're doing our best friends.
- 1:19:00[SPEAKER_00]: We're trying okay we're really trying
- 1:19:02[SPEAKER_06]: Did I do a new one friend of mine?
