- 0:00You're listening to the Sports Therapy Association podcast, putting evidence
- 0:04back into soft tissue therapy.
- 0:07Music.
- 0:17Hey people, how you doing? Welcome to episode 184 of the Sports Therapy Association podcast.
- 0:23My name's Matt Phillips, creator of OneChatLive.com. And as always,
- 0:27this episode is being recorded live on a Tuesday, 8 o'clock,
- 0:31on the Sports Therapy Association YouTube channel and the Sports Therapy Association Facebook page.
- 0:37And I think actually this particular episode, I am also streaming to the Sports
- 0:41Therapy Association open group.
- 0:43So it's the first Tuesday of the month, and we are therefore bringing you our regular series,
- 0:48Ask Us Anything, in which our STA panel discuss a selection of questions,
- 0:52both emailed in to me, matt at thesta.co.uk, and also taken from the Marvellous
- 0:57Sports Massage Training and Support Group run by Tracy McLimmon.
- 1:00But first of all, a big thank you to last week's guests.
- 1:04It was a great episode. It really was. And it always is because that's how we
- 1:09roll in the show. But it was a really good episode.
- 1:10And we thank everybody who joined us live and everyone who's downloaded it.
- 1:14It's still getting downloaded loads.
- 1:16It was physios versus sports therapists. If you listen to the podcast,
- 1:19then you can't see the image of it on the screen.
- 1:22But if you are interested in seeing what comes up on the screen,
- 1:24then this is recorded on YouTube as well. The name was obviously Clickbait.
- 1:28You have to do it. You have to do a little bit of that to get people to download stuff these days.
- 1:33And what we had was a panel of physios and sports therapists from the MSK Hub,
- 1:39which is a great Facebook group on Facebook, funnily enough.
- 1:42And we just talked it through some of the arguments normally down to misinformation.
- 1:49Or lack of information about what physios do
- 1:52what sports therapists do a little bit of pride a
- 1:55little bit of fear all the sort of things which cause miscommunication and
- 1:58it's a great eye opener and the physios on the panel learned some
- 2:01stuff the sports therapist learned some stuff and from the feedback we've
- 2:04had a lot of the listeners learned some stuff and we'll
- 2:07probably touch on it it again tonight because one of the questions we've had emailed
- 2:10in is about that i'll just leave that as a hook shall
- 2:12i yeah i won't tell you what the question is but anyway if you
- 2:15do want to listen to that i do recommend you do because so many sports
- 2:18massage therapists sports therapists think they're
- 2:21great but i'm not a physio and it's always that
- 2:24in the background niggling away yeah i'm good not physio so
- 2:27if you like that then i would encourage you to listen to
- 2:30this and hear from the physios also if you're an angry sports therapist
- 2:33who doesn't think all physios are out to get you not all
- 2:36of them some of them are rest assured just because you're paranoid doesn't
- 2:39mean no one's after you but not all of them are a lot
- 2:42of them are very nice and they actually form an important part of
- 2:45multidisciplinary care and you be you really
- 2:48should have a physio or a couple of physios in your little circle who you can
- 2:52refer to who you will get referrals back from and so on okay so anyway check
- 2:57it out it's an all popular podcast apps and if you want to watch the video you
- 3:00can see on youtube and also of course all of it is is put on the website for
- 3:04the STA, which is thesta.com.
- 3:07Right. That's it. So as I say, tonight, it's going to be, I'm going to bring up the STA panel.
- 3:13If you listen to this or watch this, and you're interested in being on the STA
- 3:16panel in the first Tuesday of the month, then thank you.
- 3:19We'd love to have you up here. You will see that there's absolutely nothing
- 3:22professional about the show, particularly the guests I've got tonight.
- 3:24And you don't have to be nervous. It's going to be fine.
- 3:27And it's just a lovely chance for therapists to answer therapists.
- 3:31Therapists the only criteria is that you've got a decent internet connection obviously webcam mic,
- 3:36and and you've got a little bit of experience to share but
- 3:39even then you know we'd love to have on the panel somebody's relatively
- 3:41new because it's all about just sharing tonight we're all
- 3:44on a level playing field and just helping each other with our experience whatever
- 3:47that might be so just one other thing if
- 3:50you are listening via the msk hub
- 3:53then you no sorry if
- 3:56you are listening via the open group you will need
- 3:59to give permission to facebook for your comments to
- 4:03be out there okay so there is something in the
- 4:05notes what i'll do is i'll put it up on the screen now as well and
- 4:09i can do that quite easily i'll put that on there now and you'll
- 4:12see it you put it in once it basically just gives facebook or live software
- 4:16a permission to use your photo when it comes up on there so you can do that
- 4:21right i've left them down in the dungeons for long enough what i will do now
- 4:26is bring up the sta panel for tonight's episode first tuesday of the month ask us anything.
- 4:33Music.
- 4:34You're listening to the sports therapy association podcast evidence back soft
- 4:40tissue therapy there we go hey everybody how are you good thanks,
- 4:46don't forget it's podcast the case of waving just doesn't kick it on this show
- 4:50So you have to use your voice, believe it or not. There's one or two waivers there, thanks for that.
- 4:56So yeah, thanks for coming along. What I am going to do is obviously give you
- 4:59a chance to introduce yourselves, because as we kind of talked about off air,
- 5:03we do get great feedback from this.
- 5:04It's so nice for therapists to hear real life stories and maybe potential solutions
- 5:09to problems which are equally shared.
- 5:11So I really appreciate you coming along and giving up your time and everything
- 5:15which you're happy to share.
- 5:16So thank you very much. so what we'll do and let's give a
- 5:19bit more room on here let's just not forget the people who've
- 5:22come to join us live so brian huxley how you're doing and ivan
- 5:26ward is in here as well if you listen to podcasts then what happens if you

- 5:41tim that's really nice coming from you thank you very much thank you it's good
- 5:45to see tim as well so So, yeah, and other people are coming through as well.
- 5:47Thank you for joining us. It really makes a difference how many people join us live.
- 5:51Right. Introducing in no particular order, then I'm just going to ask you to
- 5:55say who you are, what part of the country you're in, in case any of our listeners
- 5:58want to kind of hook up with you and get some advice. Sound a bit wrong. We'll edit that out.
- 6:03Let's do let's let's have Mark first of all.
- 6:07So, Mark, introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about you. Hi, I'm Mark Leasdale.
- 6:13I'm, as Gary referred to in a podcast I was listening to recently,
- 6:17I'm one of the 5% who's left working as a sports massage therapist coming into
- 6:22my fifth year since first deciding to do it.
- 6:26My background is really around, and I do regard myself as being pretty new to it.
- 6:33I did 30 years in the police service and was looking for something to do towards the end of it.
- 6:38I was interested in run coaching, so I've been doing that for six or seven years,
- 6:44and also other sports coaching, including cricket. cricket.
- 6:50The sort of the setup that I work with now is that we bought a premises to do
- 6:56something else in, which was sort of hot desking and office rental,
- 7:00but there was space for a therapy room in it, which I've spent a little bit of money on.
- 7:05And I work there now, probably I've got about two days a week work.
- 7:09So I still regard myself as a part-timer, but we've taken over another premises
- 7:14that suffered under covid so i've got a couple of other therapists who come and rent the room for a.
- 7:21Day that's me fantastic and what part of the country was it again not sorry
- 7:25west wales it's easy for you to say what was it called again.
- 7:31I think it doesn't begin with a fur i know it doesn't give you the first probably
- 7:34a lure isn't it or something yeah it is it's got a double l at the start it's
- 7:38um it's sort of about 15 miles miles away from Swansea for people. Fantastic.
- 7:43That's great. We've got a lot of members down that way. So it's good to know
- 7:46where you're from. Right. Thanks, Mark. Thanks for joining us.
- 7:49Treadmill still working well.
- 7:51Well, no, my treadmill is still broken down. I'm sorry to bring it up.
- 7:54Let's not bring the tempo down now.
- 7:57It was quite upbeat there. I'm going to be just trying to move on.
- 8:00We'll go down now. I don't want to open up that can of worms.
- 8:03Right, let's move along. Sarah Clackworthy, how are you, Sarah?
- 8:06Yeah, I'm really good, thank you. Thanks for having me on tonight.
- 8:10So, Clackworthy, I'm from the south-west in Gloucestershire.
- 8:14I'm a sports massage therapist and have been since 2013.
- 8:182013 so 11 years at level I'm now at level five I've always worked privately
- 8:24from home I've got this lovely lucky for me this lovely purpose-built therapy
- 8:30room mini gym that I use with my clients,
- 8:34but I do have a network of sort of physio, osteopaths and chiropractors I work
- 8:39with and refer to if I need to.
- 8:42My main sort of bread and butter is the running and triathlon community community
- 8:47i deal with a lot of those i've done that date analysis course just just that
- 8:53completed actually in in march so i work with a lot of a lot of those but but also just the general.
- 9:02Carpenters builders teachers and and anyone else
- 9:05that that comes along with some some pain or grumble i've
- 9:09the way that i've tried to advance myself over the years
- 9:12was by just adding my to my professional toolbox
- 9:16with lots of courses trying to keep myself up
- 9:19to date as much as my spare time allows it's
- 9:23doing things like listening to you guys on a on Tuesday
- 9:26night just trying to keep myself up with
- 9:29the the moving trends in our industry so yeah
- 9:32that's me brilliant thank you so much for that
- 9:35so you working did you say you converted your own house
- 9:38is it or your own own premises yes i'm lucky
- 9:41enough to have a room with a separate entrance which
- 9:45was very useful in the coded eras era
- 9:48but yes i should be working home that's great
- 9:51well get that it just reminded me actually you reminded me two things one i
- 9:54need to start sorting out the gate analysis course because that's coming
- 9:56up sooner than i thought for that yeah and a
- 10:00bit of those notes again and two we are
- 10:02going to have a whole month dedicated to kind of
- 10:06like panel stuff of of dedicated to different topics which.
- 10:09One of them is going to be setting up setting up in your home that
- 10:13the legal aspects of it whether it's in your garage in
- 10:16your home all the everything which people need to take on
- 10:18board so we might see you back for that then we'll do another one about setting up
- 10:21in a gym which will be renting stuff and then we'll do another one about mobile
- 10:24massage so we're going to do three of them because i think it's so interesting hearing
- 10:28for new therapists or therapists suddenly thinking
- 10:31well maybe i should do it from home because they want to hear from you guys
- 10:33so hopefully we might even have you back for that that'd be nice anyway thank
- 10:38you so much coming on right let's go down to dan hey dan how are you doing hi
- 10:44how are you i'm very well thanks for joining us.
- 10:50Yeah, thank you for having me. I can't believe people still want to listen to me.
- 10:55I am a sports therapist with an add-on of sports psych biomechanics.
- 11:01I run a clinic down in Sussex near to Gatwick called Body Health Gatwick,
- 11:06which has treatment rooms.
- 11:08It also has a gym space downstairs.
- 11:11I'm really lucky where I do rehab and S&C and now gait analysis. Plug in there.
- 11:21Yeah and yeah i've been going since 2012
- 11:25something like that and i predominantly used to
- 11:29work in football and now i have moved more
- 11:31into athletics uh specifically similar to sarah runners
- 11:35triathletes is my main kind of demographic but
- 11:38i work with loads of different sports in
- 11:41my unit to be fair but yeah probably more the runners and
- 11:44triathletes as a main main group excellent and
- 11:47you did a thing recently didn't you thing yeah I
- 11:50went to a sixth
- 11:54form college to go and plug sports therapy yeah
- 11:57so yeah and just say how wonderful it
- 12:00is and like hopefully for the next generation if they want to go into that or
- 12:06physio or something similar it was really cool it was a little bit terrifying
- 12:10being back at a school hall but they were very forgiving very nice and yeah
- 12:16really really lucky that they were quite engaging and asking questions.
- 12:19So that was quite a relief because, yeah, mass public speaking is not necessarily
- 12:25my first calling. So yeah, it was really good.
- 12:27That was great. I was really happy to see it. It was a great post and you looked
- 12:31really happy about it with yourself, which is great.
- 12:33And hopefully coming on to something like this, I don't know,
- 12:36did doing something like this help a little bit with the idea of,
- 12:39oh, people are interested in what I want to say, or did it help you up there?
- 12:42Just say just say no no yeah yes thank
- 12:46you I like to think a little bit the confidence
- 12:49helps because a lot of people they'd hate to do this
- 12:52no I am I really
- 12:55enjoy what I do and like I genuinely am really really passionate so I will speak
- 13:00to literally anyone who will give me five minutes of their day and yeah and
- 13:04I I'm a big believer as well of if you can do give back a little bit because
- 13:09it will work some cycles I never had anything like that when I was at school So if I can, like,
- 13:14speak to someone and get one sports therapist out of them, like, they're wonderful.
- 13:20Excellent. That's really cool. That sounds really good. Right.
- 13:23Moving on. Thank you for joining us, Dan. Over to Penny.
- 13:26Hi, everyone. So I've come from an education background.
- 13:31I was a teacher for, I don't want to say how long, for two decades and decided I needed a change.
- 13:38So I started doing a little bit of anatomy
- 13:41and physiology and pathology complete different language
- 13:44for me and been doing sports massage
- 13:47therapy since 2018 full-time completely
- 13:52left education and never looked
- 13:55back and I also
- 13:58did the maths course I just realized I'm looking.
- 14:01For the plug for me yeah you did a course that's
- 14:04fine yeah good so the running the running course
- 14:07course was amazing uh you're doing the right thing sarah i think daniela
- 14:10was on my talk about the course it's just
- 14:15brilliant and therapy now at
- 14:19level five so i'm basically a soft tissue
- 14:21therapist i don't quite understand the difference in the terms
- 14:25doesn't really matter so just you
- 14:28know helping people with their sport and you
- 14:32had a clinic or at home how do you how do i am working working from home yes
- 14:35i started straight away from home treating
- 14:38people and it's been great it's absolutely great
- 14:41amazing okay thank you thank you glad to be
- 14:44here thank you for inviting me an absolute pleasure and last
- 14:47but not least we've got gary who if people don't know is the founder of the
- 14:49sports therapy association hey gary how you doing hi matt
- 14:53and i'm the only one here who's not been invited onto your course but
- 14:57i have supported run chat
- 15:00live since since it started it's so it's all
- 15:02good well no i did the course up in lincoln about 25 years ago
- 15:05or something so you did it hasn't changed yeah i was
- 15:09trying to make you feel bad about it obviously didn't work no um yeah
- 15:12i just want to say happy birthday for last week to tim who's in the audience
- 15:16i think he was 30 last week happy birthday to him happy birthday to him yeah
- 15:21all fine at this end matt very busy talking to members i'm going to be out of
- 15:25office after tonight until friday late on friday and Jake's working remotely.
- 15:31But we are still dealing with everything, emails, Facebook messages, et cetera.
- 15:35Amazing. Right. Thanks, Gary. OK, so I think it's nice.
- 15:38I think it's important when we do get to the questions for people to have a
- 15:41little idea of where you're from.
- 15:42So you've got somebody who's started off and built their brand and is now and
- 15:47made it multidisciplinary.
- 15:48You've got gay and nasty stuff going on. We've got a few people who are at home.
- 15:52We've got people who started later in life.
- 15:54And it's nice because obviously all of that is going to give you different experiences
- 15:58and information to share.
- 15:59So hopefully there's someone on our panel who reflects what the listeners are
- 16:03doing, you the listener are doing.
- 16:04Doing so i'm going to bring up the questions i'm going
- 16:07to bring them on the screen for the people who've joined us live as well
- 16:10so you can see them then i'll also read out the whole thing some of
- 16:13them are anonymous some of them if i do read out the name it's because the person's
- 16:16given me permission to use the name i'm also
- 16:19very excited we got a which logo do you prefer later today for the
- 16:22first time on the show so we're going to analyze a couple of logos gary is
- 16:25just going to be salivating at that he loves his logos
- 16:28and business cards and you're like yeah brilliant so that's
- 16:31me coming up right so but i'm going to do them in order so i'm going to bring up
- 16:34up some questions now onto the screen so people join
- 16:37us live can see this going on so the
- 16:40first question the shortened version which you
- 16:42can see on the screen now is training for a massage therapist sports
- 16:46therapist or physio so it kind of ties in with last week's episode physio versus
- 16:49sports therapist the whole question was as follows gang you ready can i have
- 16:54people's opinion on further education after being a massage therapist i want
- 16:58to decide on training to become a sports therapist or a physio and that was
- 17:02from somebody at the sports massage training and support group.
- 17:05Common question anybody ever
- 17:08put that question to themselves or acted on it it's it's a question that i get
- 17:14asked fairly regularly matt i've worked in further education and higher education
- 17:20and what i say to people is if you're coming from a vocational background and
- 17:24you want to enroll roll onto an academic program,
- 17:26the academic establishment will probably want you to be able to evidence that
- 17:31you are returning to learning or you've got certain amounts of skills or the
- 17:35dedication required to complete the degree.
- 17:37So I would say look at the competencies for sports therapy and physio before
- 17:43you decide because, you know, physio is not the guarantee of employment it once used to be.
- 17:49It's no longer a funded degree that was bursaried by the NHS.
- 17:52So you're going to be paying student fees wherever and i
- 17:55think i saw this one on on one of the threads and i did put
- 17:59in there if a person wants to speak to me send sta gary a facebook dm or gary
- 18:04at the sta.co.uk and i'll just have a chat with them mark so a penny and danielle
- 18:09have you ever thought i need to be a physio i've got to be a physio have you
- 18:13ever caught your mind or i don't think any of you actually did it i'd be on no sorry.
- 18:19Oh sorry yeah so for for me because I went
- 18:21down the degree route it was common I would
- 18:25say a good like third of my
- 18:28classmates went on and did a MSK in physiotherapy
- 18:31or something else so I
- 18:34went down the sports science route personally I kind of fell into it by accident
- 18:40and I just went with the flow but yeah there has definitely been times where
- 18:44I thought oh maybe it would be an easier life etc etc but what I have found
- 18:49like Gary has said is actually it's not guaranteed employment.
- 18:53Either way like so it depends where you want
- 18:56to go like and I think you've got to ask your question what do
- 18:59you want to do and who do you want to work with because
- 19:02like you want to work in a hospital well then of
- 19:05course you should probably go down the video route you know
- 19:08and you could do both a bit more outside but
- 19:11if you want to work with more sporting people then you know therapy is
- 19:14definitely definitely more geared towards working with well for
- 19:17me it felt like it was like towards athletic people so
- 19:20I think the question you've got to always ask yourself is what is
- 19:23the end goal and like and like Gary
- 19:26said like research the course and what criteria will you fit in
- 19:29or would actually the level four five would
- 19:33that be a better way around around life that's
- 19:37great thank you Mark what were you going to say I was
- 19:40saying I sort of I'm still undecided actually because i've
- 19:44looked at both options a little
- 19:47bit longer than in england the welsh government were offering
- 19:50bursaries to train for physiotherapy and
- 19:54podiatry i think it was as long as you worked in the nhs for two the welsh nhs
- 19:59for two years afterwards i steered away from that really because i wasn't actually
- 20:04sure whether that is the work it was you know i was committing five years to
- 20:09it effectively by the time you've trained.
- 20:12So I'm still in that undecided learning phase and just sort of,
- 20:18you know, very similar to what Danielle says is what actually do you,
- 20:22what qualifications do you need to get the work that you want out of doing this?
- 20:28So at the moment, to a certain degree,
- 20:31you know, spending a lot of time studying, getting
- 20:34quite detailed qualifications isn't something that i
- 20:37personally need i i'm tending to try and pick up bits of cpd here and there
- 20:43and and actually sort of sit on my hands before making the decision in which
- 20:48direction to go with a bit more detail excellent so you're still tempted by
- 20:52the idea of of doing physiotherapy are you,
- 20:55yeah i am a bit because i can see the well the wider remit that they've that
- 21:00they've got but But my real interest historically has been around sports and rehab and,
- 21:08you know, and just dealing with that, you know, the results of playing sport.
- 21:13But I do realize that, you know, physiotherapy is going to provide a lot more than that.
- 21:18Also, at the back of my mind is my age, which is a big factor because I'm 55 now.
- 21:25And realistically, I want to work for 10, 12 years probably.
- 21:29So does it need the investment of three years of study to provide those remaining
- 21:36eight or nine years worth of work?
- 21:37So that's probably why I'd be steering away from it or I haven't made that jump.
- 21:41So when you see you're tempted by the extra from physiotherapy
- 21:44you like the idea of working outside of sport and working
- 21:47in hospitals in the different ward yeah yeah yeah and
- 21:50some people forget that because lots of
- 21:53my members of my family have worked in hospitals so doing different
- 21:56things i think that's such an important point which which sometimes
- 21:59we presume people know but we really when we say physiotherapy and
- 22:02sports therapy we really are comparing two pretty
- 22:06different things and as as Gemma was explaining from
- 22:09the MSK hub who's a physio herself and has championed multidisciplinary
- 22:12care a lot physiotherapists will do far
- 22:15less sports related MSK on the on the course than
- 22:19a sports scientist or sports therapist will because they're
- 22:22learning all about the other wards and places in
- 22:25a hospital they're learning all about the neuro and and working with
- 22:28children and working in and also all the other departments respiratory
- 22:31and everything so so it's really very different
- 22:34so like dan said you have to think what do i want to do do i
- 22:36want to work in different wards and be away from sport or do.
- 22:39I just want to work with sports people so two totally different
- 22:42careers which i think sometimes people get confused with
- 22:45and they set physiotherapy it's like well that's the best can
- 22:48i do that i need to get that when really it's like it's not
- 22:51what really after so penny and sarah
- 22:54it's a good topic have you ever had doubts i've had a recently
- 22:57i just i went on and googled can i get a
- 23:00master's in physiotherapy or something because i have so many qualifications
- 23:03in my background i want to do another three or four or five years
- 23:06in education again you know again like
- 23:09mark it's the age thing i you know how
- 23:12much can you invest i think that just reading at
- 23:15the question again it's not quite
- 23:18i don't quite quite know this person actually it's
- 23:21you know so it's does he mean or she does she
- 23:24mean like I want to do something because sports massage
- 23:27therapy is not giving me any you know pleasure at
- 23:30the moment I want to do something completely different or is the
- 23:34question about what's the next step after being a
- 23:37sports massage therapist so I can better myself and then
- 23:41videos and sports therapies are completely different modalities but they have
- 23:45overlapping qualities don't they including sports massage therapy so I agree
- 23:51with Daniela on the question they have to ask the question what is it that I
- 23:55want to be doing which types of people do I want to be helping.
- 24:00What's my target, you know, employment idea in a way before they,
- 24:05because it's still a title.
- 24:07If it's just about the title, there's no point.
- 24:10It all depends on why this question. And that's what I don't understand.
- 24:15So I think what happens when we have people come into this industry,
- 24:20and we've done a podcast in October about the changing face of qualifications
- 24:24and how much the qualifications have changed in the last 20 years.
- 24:29And i think what happens is because of the
- 24:31limited scope of practice that that now comes with
- 24:34the level three course of just administering or
- 24:37applying massage in the sport activity content in pre
- 24:39post and intravent and maintenance massage i think a
- 24:42lot of people might feel a bit restricted and and
- 24:46i know from experience that 18 months into my journey as
- 24:49a sports and remedial massage therapist i wanted
- 24:52to know more and i think that's a natural point where you've
- 24:55worked with a different you know different clients different body
- 24:58types different you know relationships with your
- 25:01clients then you think okay you know i'm i'm either
- 25:04not getting the results that i was promised from the from
- 25:07my educator so i want to know more and i think the question in general is where
- 25:12do i go next you know what are my options rather than specifically highlighting
- 25:16i want to be a sports therapist or a physio great great points and people listening
- 25:21live if you want to make share share your own experiences,
- 25:25or if you want to ask a follow-up question, feel free to do so.
- 25:28Brian Huxley, for example, has said, the bottom line is, if you want to work
- 25:31in the NHS, the traditional physiotherapy is the route to follow,
- 25:34especially if you're more interested in respiratory or cardiac rehabilitation.
- 25:38Yeah, I think that's a key point, isn't it? And then Rachel Francis Thompson,
- 25:41good to see you, Rachel, has commented, there are often inaccurate perceptions
- 25:45about what physiotherapy is.
- 25:46I get a huge volume of learners who say they want to be a physio but can't afford
- 25:49or bear the thought of three years.
- 25:52It's true. Yeah, it's getting more informed, isn't it? Which is the point of
- 25:58these things, isn't it? It's the point of belonging to a professional association
- 26:01who's going to give you unbiased advice and support and put you in contact with people who can help you.
- 26:07It's asking around and getting a bit more information before you rush into something
- 26:10just because someone else is doing it and you've got a bit of FOMO.
- 26:13Good points, Rachel. Can I just say that? I think plenty of time to explore
- 26:18many, many different areas of our business before you may take the jump.
- 26:25There's endless courses where you can dip your toe in, find out areas that you
- 26:30really like, bring some variation into your own clinic.
- 26:33You don't have to just take a plunge and make a decision one way or the other.
- 26:39I couldn't come to university for three years, for example.
- 26:43So I just try and choose courses that sort of cherry pick physiotherapy,
- 26:50areas of physiotherapy that I can bring into my clinic and offer to my clients.
- 26:56So it's not always about, you know, taking those really big steps.
- 27:01You can do it bit by bit and still be really satisfied with the product that you're offering.
- 27:07Great points. Good points. what type of treatments i'm going to move on to the
- 27:12next question sorry we're gonna have to go on because we've got five all right
- 27:15let's move on no now i feel bad penny what you're gonna say no i just want to
- 27:19say that basically what kind of treatment you want to offer to people,
- 27:23because there are differences between the modalities but i think you know we
- 27:30all struggle with the title of our profession and we feel inadequate and we
- 27:35have the imposter syndrome going around all the time but ask your clients see
- 27:39what your clients want what do they need.
- 27:42Matt just before you move on i think
- 27:45it's important to remember that you know
- 27:48if we are a frustrated therapist and we're not getting
- 27:51the the results that we expected in three to
- 27:53five sessions you know we are a signposting this this whole
- 27:56podcast come about we're a signposting service for people
- 27:59you know it's not about the commercially
- 28:02driven activities of the industry industry
- 28:05to get you to do more courses it's about you identifying
- 28:09within your client sort of
- 28:12demographic how you will become better at treating them or dealing with them
- 28:17and remember people are not motivated to buy services they're investing in outcomes
- 28:21so anybody who doesn't understand that you're an sta member just book a call
- 28:25with me and i can explain that or join us on one of our coffee evening chat
- 28:28because that's discussed regularly,
- 28:30Great. Yeah. Good points. Right.
- 28:33We've got five questions. So we're going to move on to the next one.
- 28:35I will make sure on the show notes that there's other podcast episodes connected
- 28:39to these questions, which you can look at and listen to, depending if you go
- 28:42to the podcast app of your choice or YouTube.
- 28:44Right. Next question. Here we go. So this was rebranding slash renaming my business. Which logo?
- 28:50The full question was sent in by Lynn Armitage Calvert, who's given kind permission
- 28:55for us to have a look at the logo she's considering.
- 28:59And this was again, a question in the sports massage training support group and
- 29:02lynn says i've been qualified in trading for four years and
- 29:05considering rebranding renaming my business my business
- 29:08is going really well growing day by day but i just don't think
- 29:10i like the name anymore or the logo i have torn between
- 29:14what to do the first photo is what i have the second
- 29:17is what i'm thinking of changing to so get
- 29:20your thinking caps on what i'm going to do is i'm going to share on the screen if you
- 29:23listen to the podcast then you're going to kind of lose out here i would
- 29:26suggest you go along to youtube because you're just gonna hear scratching
- 29:29of heads and comments and something you can't see but we'll try and describe it
- 29:32and and as we're giving our reasons maybe describe what's on
- 29:35the screen what you like or don't like so i'm going
- 29:38to bring these up onto the screen now i'll bring
- 29:40up the original logo which is what lynn has
- 29:44got first i'll put it on full screen but we can still
- 29:46hear you speaking behind it put that
- 29:50there okay so this is the original one if
- 29:53you listen to the podcast then how would i describe it we've got
- 29:55a picture of a blue rhino we've got lynn armitage big name underneath sports massage
- 29:59underneath long phone number underneath that and
- 30:02then we've got a lovely alliteration at the bottom relieve restore revive
- 30:05okay so we've got quite a lot of information on there that's
- 30:09panel you can see that okay yeah yeah cool right this is what lynn has come
- 30:14up with and she's thinking about changing it too or she's open for fresh ideas
- 30:18so interested to hear your feedback this is there we go so for podcast listeners
- 30:23um still got the blue runner which looks Looks like runners are kind of Lynn's bread and butter.
- 30:28But now we've got a handwritten kind of signature, which says Lynn Armitage.
- 30:33And then underneath in very small letters, we got sports massage.
- 30:36Phone numbers come off and we've got rid of that. Believe, restore,
- 30:40revise. So what do you think, people? It looks wicked.
- 30:45It's really, really good. What I've found with rebranding is think about where it's going to go.
- 30:52So if you want to print it on a t-shirt are you
- 30:55going to be able to embroider it or will you have to
- 30:58ask a really good point so keep
- 31:02it as simple as possible because so
- 31:05minimal colors as in like only choose like three colors max because sometimes
- 31:09you get charged more colors and obviously if you want to like so i've got mine
- 31:13embroidered on my shirt so and and that was one of the key things it had to
- 31:17be simple but this looks awesome i love that she's making her number off she
- 31:21doesn't need it. Yeah, it looks cool.
- 31:24Okay so that's interesting i love the color recommendations in that and taking
- 31:28the number off because it doesn't need to be on there if they want to get in
- 31:30contact with you they can just go to google your name can't they or something
- 31:33i guess yeah what are you going to say penny yeah.
- 31:36I was going to say they i would expect the the first
- 31:39one to be in a like a business card i wouldn't
- 31:42i don't see that as a logo okay only
- 31:45sorry it's just but the second one is it's really cool and
- 31:49i can see that on a t-shirt but i don't know whether they that's a
- 31:52good point by the embroidery i think then the
- 31:56font might be a little bit hard to to work signature thing
- 31:59yeah it's beautiful yeah it's really nice but
- 32:02my question is why why this need
- 32:06now to change the logo i think
- 32:09she was just bored with it she doesn't like the name yeah she
- 32:13said she hadn't for four years she's been
- 32:15training with it for four years and just wants to freshen it up maybe if
- 32:19somebody said no don't do it keep it that might be an argument as well the
- 32:22one thing is very important is to have what you do on your
- 32:25logo so that's very clear sports massage that's that's
- 32:29all it needs there yeah that's brilliant i don't
- 32:32understand anything i want to hear from you guys i think if
- 32:35you if you look at the font of the new one it's not as read off from a distance
- 32:40and so if she's standing around a trade fair or something people are looking
- 32:46for and she wants to be recognized they might find that a little more or difficult
- 32:50to read than the clearer print on the first one.
- 32:55I mean, all these changes cost money, don't they?
- 32:59So you'd have to change your logo on every piece of promo material.
- 33:05Be it flags or T-shirts, et cetera, all the paperwork.
- 33:11So you've got that cost. True. Put it away.
- 33:16Sorry yeah you've got to weigh that up haven't you it's a very good point
- 33:19yeah is it worth the finance it's going to cost you
- 33:21yeah yeah might be a website redesign uh require
- 33:25they're quite costly as well you know
- 33:28if you've got something that's that is clear in the first place is there a need
- 33:33for a change i like i like the second one it's a lot more modern it seems to
- 33:36have been updated and as she's already known the clients and people in the local
- 33:43area will recognize oh oh, that's Lynne,
- 33:46she's changed her logo, that's great, we like that,
- 33:49because I've seen that happen around here too,
- 33:51and still recognisable,
- 33:54it's just, yeah, they've updated,
- 33:56so that brings with it the sense of, she's moving with the times,
- 34:01and she's keeping an eye on the markets, etc., so yeah, that's good for her promo.
- 34:06Good points, I like that, so yeah, people already know her, will still recognise
- 34:10it through the runner, through the colours, they're very similar still,
- 34:13is still that kind of like purple colour and the runner. Cool.
- 34:16Mark, what are you thinking?
- 34:17I was just thinking, is the runner really the logo because that's her client base?
- 34:23And whether that might just be restricting things a little bit?
- 34:26I don't really know what the answer is.
- 34:28But bearing in mind, I think we've all said we don't have a sort of a single
- 34:31population client base.
- 34:34There's perhaps an opportunity to...
- 34:37Put something else there yeah i kind of think of what that would be at the moment,
- 34:42but if her client base is all runners and that's intended for fun runs and things like that to,
- 34:48display then then that works pretty well i remember
- 34:51gary benson about 15 years ago saying i need
- 34:54a different business card for the different places you go into because if
- 34:57you're trying to get your golfers to come to you i haven't
- 35:01changed my tune what i would say is that the
- 35:04first squash track it you know the first one
- 35:07makes more of a connection with the relieve
- 35:10restore revive the second one i don't think makes
- 35:13a you know a connection but i don't think having
- 35:16your name on it having your title on it i don't think that's important i
- 35:19think you need to do something that makes a connection with your demographic
- 35:22so if i was lynn and i was having
- 35:25you know a lot of runners i would have a different tagline for
- 35:29runners and you know are you failing your pb be regularly
- 35:32question mark with a picture of a run if I was trying to appeal to
- 35:35golfers I would have you know do you want to hit
- 35:37the ball 25 yards further so everybody it's
- 35:40Lynn's been you know this for four years
- 35:43now the majority of the people in her local area will know
- 35:46she wants to I expect expand to different networks and you've got to make that
- 35:53connection and understand the outcome that the individual wants you know whether
- 35:58they're a golfer you know a high jumper who's knocking the bar off regularly
- 36:01a long jump who's not reaching the sand pit whatever.
- 36:04You've got to make that connection great points
- 36:07and rachel here has raised a point which which kind
- 36:11of makes sense to me as well it said um could one be a business card
- 36:14and the other be the clothing logo because it depends
- 36:17where it's going to be isn't it because like i can't remember who it was but somebody said if
- 36:20you've got a t-shirt on and you've got that signature and the runner no
- 36:23one's going to see who you are if they don't know you for it could
- 36:26be a dancer or something you're not really straight away going to
- 36:29know what that person's selling if it's on a t-shirt at an event or
- 36:32therapy expo so maybe it depends where you're going
- 36:35yeah from a
- 36:38perspective of a designer right i would if
- 36:41i were to play with the designing of this logo the new one i'm
- 36:43talking about the runner would be smaller and the sports massage
- 36:46would be bigger so it kind of like shows what she's
- 36:49doing this is what i want to do i want to do sports
- 36:52massage yeah and i had the
- 36:55the same question as mark did with is it the target market
- 36:58is it runners is she working with runners yeah yeah
- 37:01yeah because imagine if that was a golfer on that picture or
- 37:04a basketball player it would change completely good point yeah i purposely moved
- 37:10away from a runner for when i rebranded because everyone's got a runner on their
- 37:16logo you know who's a sports therapist or a physio like local to me I just wanted
- 37:21to do something different,
- 37:23so yeah like I totally agree sports massage needs to be bigger,
- 37:27because but like something that
- 37:29I went to on the expo and I can't remember who it was but they did say.
- 37:34Logos are great but they are not the
- 37:37be all and end all because unless you're something like tesco's which
- 37:40is very recognizable doesn't it's
- 37:44something that's nice and represents you and it's nice to header things
- 37:47and it looks pretty but is it
- 37:50going to go national like like really like
- 37:54don't don't over overthink it do what you enjoy and
- 37:57what's simple keep it simple it's my biggest thing i learned
- 38:00that's good advice i like it okay brilliant
- 38:03thank you thank you for your thoughts people brilliant we're
- 38:06going to move on to the next one um lynn just to thank you for you for
- 38:09letting us share that um i will give you a link to this as you asked to
- 38:12listen to what our panel have said and there's
- 38:15a question in the question map from facebook user how
- 38:18does the panel keep things fresh in their own clinics
- 38:21right keeps in trust what's that what kind of comfort
- 38:25isn't it or what do you use oh i see
- 38:28what they mean now sorry yes yeah how do you keep things fresh in
- 38:31your clinics yeah i suppose they mean like in
- 38:34terms of like i don't know
- 38:37something new something oh guess
- 38:39what we've got special today the natural thing is to want is to want to add
- 38:44a service to your your portfolio your your skill set but i don't i don't personally
- 38:49think that's the answer and i don't think we have to keep things fresh i think
- 38:53you've got something that's working well stick with it go with it because people
- 38:57are coming to see you if you've got a full full diary.
- 39:00Nothing needs to change apart from occasionally you know redecorating and things
- 39:04like having a new t-shirt.
- 39:07I'm glad you said that larry because i was getting a bit nervous then
- 39:10because i haven't changed anything for a very long time
- 39:13but i'm lucky that i have
- 39:15people coming in every day you know i have a full diary every
- 39:18week so i did change my logo in the last four
- 39:21years just went for a more up-to-date brighter
- 39:25colors so that's another thing lean could
- 39:27think of a step out of any color to hers maybe but
- 39:31yes in terms of in terms of keeping dropping things
- 39:34graphics going going away and learning new things that I can then offer people
- 39:39in clinic especially your regulars who are who come in and say well you know
- 39:44you feel comfortable enough to say do you want to try this today because I think
- 39:47this would work really well for you I'd learnt it recently and pass it on to your regulars.
- 39:54It's an interesting question isn't it like why do you
- 39:57think I don't know Facebook user if you do want to bring your logo up and
- 40:01your name the reason why it says as facebook users you just got to
- 40:03click that link that i shared earlier on just to give facebook permission
- 40:06to show it or you can stay as facebook user but
- 40:09i'm just wondering what do you think because like
- 40:12gary said sometimes it can be a slippery path you're
- 40:15thinking right i need to do something new i need to change things around because it's
- 40:19not that kind of industry is it you know sometimes change is
- 40:22unnecessarily spend money and and really you should be
- 40:25looking more at just kind of making sure that
- 40:28the client experience is is tuned perfectly from beginning
- 40:30to end and looking maybe a bit more operations rather than just
- 40:34the whether it's fresh in clinic or not i'm not
- 40:37sure if it answers the question but you know aside of
- 40:40what you're offering i mean i'm spending money on a website being developed
- 40:45at the moment which will link to a booking system so the customer experience
- 40:49beforehand will and afterwards be very different good point but it's not it's
- 40:55not significant around the service being provided it is.
- 40:59I think posters and things are good. That's things you can move around.
- 41:02And again, it was, who was it?
- 41:04It was Andrew McCauley, who was talking,
- 41:09I mean, we've talked before about how the nocebo effect of having stuff on your
- 41:13walls, which can freak out clients, like the classic kind of old thing of like
- 41:17a knee joint with a meniscus taken out on the shelf and the person with knee
- 41:21pain is looking at going, oh my God, my knee's starting to hurt now.
- 41:23Is that what i got there this big red blob you know the kind of nasiva
- 41:26stuff but andrew in the episode was talking about how we can
- 41:29actually get the other side we can get them bolstered up and feeling good
- 41:32and ready for behavior change with some kind of
- 41:35not too in your face but some motivational stuff on
- 41:38the walls which gets people thinking i am empowered i can
- 41:41do this things are going to be okay that sort of stuff so maybe
- 41:44that can be something which could kind of freshen up
- 41:47the clinic a little bit you know just thinking should we change the messages people
- 41:50see when they come in i did like that thing from andrew because you
- 41:53are affecting that that contextual effect is happening from
- 41:56the moment they step through your door and look around the plants the
- 41:59life you know everything they see is gonna you know.
- 42:02Change their their happiness to change and listen to you
- 42:05so maybe that's one way facebook user i've got
- 42:08blackboards and i write things on it like motivational quotes on
- 42:11it and every month they know they will change so they they
- 42:14come back back every month and go okay what you've written down
- 42:16now penny so they find that exciting that's
- 42:20a nice idea we end up by the gate by the treadmill yeah always
- 42:23just choking something up there and people just say what have you got on your board
- 42:26today then yeah it's nice yeah it's good fine there you go thanks facebook thanks
- 42:31for the question i hope that gives you an idea right let's bring up a question
- 42:35from here what do we got we're going to move on to yeah let me just see this
- 42:40came as well the short version nutrition alongside my sports massage such. Best place to study.
- 42:45So this was a question which I like because I think a lot of,
- 42:47I think it's a healthy question because if you do want to help your clients.
- 42:51It's quite forward thinking to think, right, I can make them feel better with
- 42:54massage and this and that, but maybe it is a nutrition thing.
- 42:58I need to know a little bit about that, when to refer them on.
- 43:00So it's a factor I think people working with others in pain should be aware of.
- 43:04And the full question was, I'm thinking of doing online.
- 43:09No, I'm thinking of doing nutrition consultations alongside my sports massage.
- 43:13I was just wondering if anyone knows the best place to study this diploma course,
- 43:16please. And that was anonymous.
- 43:18So yeah, anybody got into nutrition, any recommendations i'm
- 43:21currently doing gary mendoza's course the applied
- 43:25nutrition and supplementation course and it's
- 43:28it's mine but it's great it's absolutely fantastic the only
- 43:31thing we need to be aware of is to what
- 43:34extent do we advise clients on nutrition
- 43:37within our remit because really why
- 43:40do we need to do this course i'm doing it for personal reasons
- 43:43i want to know more about things because i'm interested in it
- 43:46but and sometimes my clients do ask me questions but i
- 43:49do tell them look i'm not a nutritionist i'm not
- 43:53a dietician there's the basic principles you
- 43:55can follow but you have to refer on if it's
- 43:58not within your remit so it depends what type
- 44:01of qualification this person wants to get how advanced
- 44:04and what for i think what's
- 44:07happening here matt is it's another case of wanting another
- 44:11string to my bow another tool for my toolbox i think
- 44:15nutrition courses i'm nutritionally trained anyway it's great
- 44:19for sharing knowledge you know you might be able
- 44:21to say you know i've i
- 44:24avoid tomatoes because they've got high high histamine
- 44:27content and it just makes me itch all over so have you thought about this might
- 44:31be you know something or you might be able to suggest a food intolerance testing
- 44:35service or something like that but you know giving guidance it's the regulated
- 44:40profession fantastic penny on gary's course sorry So I just want to check with Penny.
- 44:46On Gary's course, do you go into how much when you know you've got to stop giving
- 44:51information to the client or making sure that you are working?
- 44:54I haven't got that far yet, but I am looking forward to that.
- 44:57Yeah, it's just it's it's a lot of studying. It's quite a few modules. It's very interesting.
- 45:02It's even a chapter on, you know.
- 45:05What's the word chemicals and
- 45:09stuff like that which i don't understand because i haven't done chemistry yeah so
- 45:13yeah yeah it's great it depends on why
- 45:16why this person wants to do this study what
- 45:20for what is going to be yeah and
- 45:23how are they going to market it as well is it how are they going to do that
- 45:26yeah yeah how's it going to be marketed alongside what they're
- 45:29doing already ready is this a completely separate little wheelchair
- 45:33will it be standalone or are we talking about just
- 45:36giving your client advice during the consultation path
- 45:39of their sport master so a
- 45:43useful way to think about this matt is what i suggest to
- 45:46people is have a think of your last 10 clients you
- 45:50know how many of the last 10 clients were your your treatment
- 45:53sessions successful with and if you've got you
- 45:56know if you can get that data and you know
- 45:59through feedback back or recommendations let's just say that you were
- 46:02you were successful with seven out of the ten and they've rebooked because
- 46:05they've invested in your your service but those
- 46:09other three how many would benefit from that nutritional guidance or how many
- 46:13benefit from sticking a needle you know if you're doing dry needling or medical
- 46:17acupuncture how many more benefit from from a kinesiology taping course or sticking
- 46:22a cup on them and that's a useful way to think about it and Facebook users come
- 46:26back, well, I'll let you deal with that, Matt.
- 46:28But, you know, sometimes it's let the patient, let the client inform your ongoing study.
- 46:36So if you're dealing with, you know, a high proportion of runners,
- 46:40it's appropriate to go and do some run training, some biomechanical understanding courses.
- 46:46But, you know, if your client base is perimenopausal, go and do some menopause
- 46:51training. You know, let them be the judge, really, and the guide to you being
- 46:56better with that main demographic, because we can't be everything to everybody.
- 47:00And that's why I always say, who is your ideal client?
- 47:04Excellent good advice as much as you can danielle you
- 47:08work a lot with athletes and and you've done
- 47:11sports science biomechanics yourself have you
- 47:14needed to get more involved in nutrition
- 47:17as well do you refer people on if you think there's a nutrition deficit there
- 47:20or me personally not really but i
- 47:23do know nutritionists who i can send people
- 47:26to so yeah the question may come up like i
- 47:29have very minimal knowledge i'm not a nutritionist is
- 47:32the key line I'm there but yeah no it's it's
- 47:35all about just just having people in
- 47:38your little pool of like around
- 47:41you so you can like call on them and just refer them on yeah
- 47:44I don't have anything to add I definitely think
- 47:47it's worth doing these courses to help with and we've
- 47:50talked about this a lot of times being able to refer on
- 47:53recognizing red flags recognizing disordered eating
- 47:56which potentially you could you know go on to eating disorders
- 48:00and and and also yeah just being
- 48:03knowing how to suggest that to your client in
- 48:07the way that they are actually going to seek that help rather
- 48:10than going oh yeah yeah i'll book it i'll give them a call thanks very much
- 48:12you know so i think it's really useful particularly and it doesn't matter whether
- 48:16you're a massage therapist and you're thinking oh a lot of people coming to
- 48:21you potentially are going to need that signposting you know they could be chasing
- 48:25something they could have a pain which could be.
- 48:28Directly down to some kind of disordered eating or
- 48:30so i think it's worth doing it for that that is a good arsenal
- 48:33to have recognizing and referring on because then the people you're referring
- 48:36on to once they know wow this massage therapist and down the road referred this
- 48:40person to me guess what when they've got clients coming in with various nutritional
- 48:44problems they're going to say what you need is a good massage you need to take
- 48:47some time out go down to so and so so So could be a good business model as well,
- 48:51says me. But hey, what do I know? Let's move on.
- 48:56Just dismissed myself in four seconds. Right, moving on. Booking apps. What is it?
- 49:004.54, no, 20.54. That's 8.54 in our language. Let's go to...
- 49:07No, I'm tired of booking apps. Let's go down to this one. This is an interesting one. Here we go.
- 49:12Hiring additional therapist. Is the subcontracting model effective?
- 49:16What's a fair hourly rate and commission split? So this was a good topic.
- 49:21I'd appreciate not everyone in the panel is hiring other people.
- 49:24But this question was from somebody in the sports massage and training and support group.
- 49:32And she did give me permission, I'm sure, to say this.
- 49:36I'm just looking for the name yes it was heather
- 49:38singleton and heather is saying what are your experiences in hiring
- 49:41additional therapists is this contracting model effective and like
- 49:45i said what's the what's a fair hourly rate and commission
- 49:47split for the therapist have you got i'm
- 49:50happy to i'm happy to start with this one what i would
- 49:53say in the first instance whether you're
- 49:56thinking of going to work for somebody else or in somebody else's
- 49:59clinic or you're looking to employ somebody else first first
- 50:02thing you should do is go to the hmrc website and
- 50:06google or google the employment status test
- 50:09by answering a number of
- 50:12questions and they're fairly
- 50:15general questions but it will give you an idea of whether your
- 50:18idea means that the it will
- 50:21be an employee or an associate because i know hmrc
- 50:24is getting a bit more strict on this recently because i've
- 50:27heard of clinics being investigated so you know
- 50:30self-employed or employee just
- 50:34go to the hmrc website type in employment status test and do that first just
- 50:39to clear yourself excellent great advice dad do you point at other people i'm
- 50:45in the process oh right tell us about it it's hard work.
- 50:52It's really hard a bit of advice that was
- 50:55given to me from from a client who was a business person
- 50:58was when you go down that employment route like get someone who's a little bit
- 51:02of you not everything of you and not 100 because if they're 100 of you they'd
- 51:06be doing what you do and it was like it because it stopped me micromanaging
- 51:12because it's my baby i'm you know my clinic so you know i'm I'm very protective of it.
- 51:17Yeah, so I'm in the process of looking for, if anyone's down in Gatwick,
- 51:23Crawley area, you give me a shout.
- 51:25Like it'll be a self-employed because they have to get their own clientele base, choose their own hours.
- 51:32I can't fix them to a day at a time, like because otherwise I'd be employing
- 51:37them. So there has to be a level of flexibility.
- 51:42So I've got a friend of mine who's used to working recruitment actually.
- 51:45So she's really helping me screen some interesting CVs out as well.
- 51:51Yeah, think about what's going to add and the type of person as well.
- 51:56I've had staff in the past, some wicked and some...
- 52:01Challenging to say the least and I think the rules are make yourself clear at the beginning.
- 52:10And something I learned a little bit the hard way was like when their staff
- 52:16although I'm pretty sure this has been like your thing that they're working
- 52:20under so make sure you're you're still the top of the the food chain as well
- 52:25like so if you do need to say something you can,
- 52:28i'm i'm you know i want to be friends with all my staff but it can't be the best days,
- 52:32because if i need to say something i need to say something i
- 52:36was interested in what you said just then can i just go back to you
- 52:39said i mustn't tell them when they're supposed to work
- 52:42because then you do you move into a different kind of position
- 52:46and what's the effect of doing that so for
- 52:49clarity matt what a self-employed person
- 52:53working under danny's umbrella if
- 52:56you like they get their own clients they
- 53:00set the times at which they want to
- 53:03go in they set the fee and they
- 53:06get paid by the client and then they pay a
- 53:09an agreed split and that should be
- 53:12contracted best advice is to get a contract and then they are officially self-employed
- 53:18but if danny was taking the money and saying it's a 65 quid a session and the
- 53:23self-employed person was working working their hours with no responsibility
- 53:27then to get cover if they're ill, for example.
- 53:31Then it's a fine line between crossing over between staff and self-employed.
- 53:36Gary, is there a third model, which is what we do, is that we just charge people a rate to use the room.
- 53:45Yeah, absolutely. And I do a half-day, full-day rate, and that's what I'm trying
- 53:53to steer clear of employing people.
- 53:55What we're talking about here is a bit like the McDonald's business model.
- 53:59They're not in the business of telling burgers. They're in the real estate business.
- 54:02You are not in the selling appointments.
- 54:05Appointments you're in the room hire business and that's that's
- 54:08fine to do it that way but you know i'm not an expert
- 54:11i just keep up to date with what the hmrc is saying
- 54:14and and and it's getting a little bit more tricky than it
- 54:16used to be very interesting i mean and and the point she makes about what's
- 54:21a fair hourly rate and and commission split i guess the hour rate depends so
- 54:24much on area and other businesses and that sort of stuff what about commission
- 54:27split though is there kind of like a well again it's a it's about negotiation
- 54:32that if you're going to get somebody or if i'm going to go in and work somewhere.
- 54:36I went to work in a gym and they said, well, it's £500 a month rent.
- 54:40I said, I don't want to pay £500 a month rent.
- 54:42I haven't got the client base yet. So why don't we say, if I get between 0 and
- 54:4710 clients a week, I pay this much.
- 54:49If I get between 10 and 20 clients a week, I pay this much.
- 54:53And have a negotiation, but always have a three-month and a six-month review period.
- 54:58Don't always enter into a 12-month contract. Just
- 55:01to cover both parties really because danny doesn't
- 55:04want to be stuck with one of those challenging therapists you know for
- 55:07a year if that puts in the contract where you have a probationary period
- 55:10or a review period it just makes things easier for both parties then excellent
- 55:16good advice has anybody here got experience of working with this system under
- 55:23someone else and it either working or not working sarah or mark or penny have
- 55:26you worked for somebody else and kind of had a bad experience When I first started,
- 55:30I asked around to find a place to start working instead of doing it at home.
- 55:33But they wanted like a 30% of my hourly rate.
- 55:39And I thought that was a lot, 30%. Because I just started, I didn't want to
- 55:44charge a lot of money because I was trying to get clients in.
- 55:47So then I just started working from home.
- 55:49When I started, I worked at a flat hourly rate for someone.
- 55:53But I was very part-time. I was one evening a week doing that.
- 55:56And that would sometimes be one client or it could be four or five.
- 56:01I guess with all of this, and I've learned this when I was employed by other
- 56:04people, is get support and talk to someone else.
- 56:10Sometimes people don't know their own value and they don't think that they should
- 56:13turn around to the person who's saying, oh, yeah, I'll take 30%.
- 56:17But this is, again, the idea of a professional association and people like Gary
- 56:20who can call up 24 hours, any time at all. The number will be in the show notes.
- 56:25And he will give you advice. He'll listen to your particular individual circumstances
- 56:29and say things you haven't even considered.
- 56:31So you know this that's what a professional
- 56:34association is supposed to do give you that advice things you wouldn't
- 56:37even think of yourself so and selfishly having
- 56:40worked i've only ever worked on my own for myself
- 56:44from home and and you know
- 56:47i say i say to myself i have i have some jobs
- 56:51that are going for sports massage therapists within a
- 56:53clinic and once i hear the the figures and
- 56:57how much they're going to take of my hourly rate when they
- 57:00want me in etc and I think about the the
- 57:03whole setup that I've got here already I
- 57:06think why why would I want to change you know I can I
- 57:09can work as hard or as little as I
- 57:12want I take off the time when I need it it's just
- 57:15incredibly convenient as long as you've got some
- 57:18support around you because that was the biggest thing that led me
- 57:21to a clinic was to have the support of other therapists around to question and
- 57:26have discussion with etc so i've tried to build that out as you know out of
- 57:32here now so yeah i've got i've got the in my opinion the best of the best in
- 57:38all the worlds at the moment.
- 57:40I think one of the services that we provide with
- 57:43our fortnightly coffee evening chats with scott on the accountability sessions
- 57:47with alex is that you don't have to feel isolated if you need to bounce ideas
- 57:52off somebody come and join us every other wednesday 7 30 till 9 p.m and and
- 57:57and mondays 12 to 12 45 i think it is but that's what we're here for that's what you pay your.
- 58:04Very very low 60 pounds per random membership
- 58:07fee for is to get you know to be
- 58:11part of a network in a community that's what we want it to be the
- 58:14facebook users come back matt have you seen that i
- 58:17think from reading that i think i'm looking at
- 58:21this person as they might come from ireland because they've mentioned sports
- 58:25therapy neuromuscular injury therapy and that used to be
- 58:27a qualification in ireland which has been re-badged but facebook users
- 58:31if you want to discuss things more with me just send SDA Gary a
- 58:34direct message and and and I'll try and
- 58:37help you where I can but yeah I agree with a lot of your points about
- 58:40you know the forever learning we should always be looking to develop
- 58:43ourselves but you know my model is let my
- 58:46clients inform me about what they
- 58:48need me to be better at excellent good
- 58:51points yes if there's anybody else in the comments section
- 58:55who we haven't had time to read out your thoughts but thank you for
- 58:58leaving them I just have to pick and choose depending on the
- 59:00time and that sort of stuff but we appreciate you all sharing information
- 59:04and it doesn't have to be the end of the conversation here this
- 59:07is why I put it onto YouTube in particular Facebook stuff disappears if you
- 59:11want the conversation to keep continue go to YouTube and put something in the
- 59:15comments there because that will appear in Google results and conversations
- 59:19can go on for far longer Facebook is probably the worst place in the world to
- 59:22have a conversation because it just goes within a day something else has replaced
- 59:25it it's never and see it again.
- 59:26So YouTube is the place to ask questions and obviously I'm watching them and
- 59:31I'll get notifications. So if you've got a question for one of our guests.
- 59:34Or anybody, then leave it in there and I'll make sure that they get back to
- 59:38you. I'll get back to you on behalf of them. So, right, look at that. It's 9.05.
- 59:41Thank you so much, people. That flew by, as always.
- 59:45There was a couple of questions here we didn't get to, but we may well bring
- 59:48them up next time, the first Tuesday of the month.
- 59:51If you're listening to the podcast and you'd like to be on the panel,
- 59:54then if you're an STA member, I do make it for STA members because this is one
- 59:58of the advantages of being in the STA, one of the many advantages for the low amount of £60 a year.
- 1:00:03You so yeah if you like the sound of it it's and it's a great learning experience
- 1:00:08as well you realize it's really not that scary and there's only 3 000 people
- 1:00:12going to hear your voice once they upload this to a podcast app so yeah it's
- 1:00:15not likely you're going to reach that many people so yeah if you've got any
- 1:00:18questions about that regarding that then matt at the sta.co.uk,
- 1:00:22and i can give you a little chat about that if you're thinking about coming up to the panel.
- 1:00:27Next week we will continue with our specialist
- 1:00:30guests i'm pleased to say that next week week
- 1:00:33i can tell you it's going to be thracolumbar fascia
- 1:00:36and lower back pain with a special guest claire boucher i think
- 1:00:39it's boucher could be boucher i haven't spoken to a face-to-face yet
- 1:00:42so let's go for boucher claire boucher who's a
- 1:00:45lecturer of sports therapy and rehabilitation at canterbury christ church university and
- 1:00:48a phd researcher at university of kent phd was
- 1:00:51in this very topic so it's going to be a really interesting thing to
- 1:00:53discuss that'll be next tuesday if you listen to the podcast at eight
- 1:00:56o'clock and you can join us either on the sports therapy association association
- 1:00:59youtube channel or the facebook page or the facebook group
- 1:01:02whatever works for you and once again people
- 1:01:05who joined us live thanks as well it's lovely to see you and thanks
- 1:01:08for giving up your time and of course thank you
- 1:01:11once again to mark bleasdale thank you for joining us sarah
- 1:01:14clatworthy and penny and daniel
- 1:01:17peters thank you very much for being in our panel people really appreciate it
- 1:01:21anything to close gary yeah just a couple of things matt what we've got coming
- 1:01:26up in forward plans for the STA team is we are producing some up-to-date resources
- 1:01:32on regulation and we hope to develop that into one of these web chat podcasts.
- 1:01:37In the middle of February which we're nearly at
- 1:01:39now we will be launching in the
- 1:01:42members area an up-to-date contraindication recognizing
- 1:01:47red flags session that's going to
- 1:01:49be recorded with Anna Maria and she's making that
- 1:01:52that available to to the members and then another thing
- 1:01:55that i'm asked regularly is about the the difference
- 1:01:58between sole trader and limited company so i'm producing a resource on that
- 1:02:03which will be a pdf and we will in the members area be inviting an accountant
- 1:02:08to come along talk to our members so we can discuss the pros and cons thereof
- 1:02:13exciting stuff coming up brilliant thanks going,
- 1:02:17right so that's it if again like i say if you listen to the podcast you fancy
- 1:02:21joining us live and next Tuesday we will be here at eight o'clock on YouTube
- 1:02:25or Facebook but once again thank you to my panel for joining us for tonight
- 1:02:29and sharing your time and hopefully we'll see some of you.
- 1:02:32Music.
