- 5:42Fashion After Hours podcast. In case you guys missed that
- 5:44first little blurb, we're here to bring another episode with a
- 5:47guest. Not just any other guests, but
- 5:50we have James Graves. Welcome everybody.
- 5:53Whoa, what's up, gentlemen? Yeah, dude, that was a good
- 5:55audience. That was a good little flow into
- 5:57that one. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:58But OK. So it's Graves, not Gravy, Not
- 6:00Garvey, No. Yeah, it's Graves.
- 6:02Like, I don't know, picture like British people from 5000 years
- 6:06ago or something. Just real.
- 6:08Maybe not 5000, maybe 500. Yeah, one of my picturing here.
- 6:12What are they going to James Graves?
- 6:15Yeah, yeah, that is kind of a, it's like such a.
- 6:18Proper English name, you know. I think for, for those of you
- 6:22who don't know James, but you take some of 'cause I had a
- 6:26buddy ask me like, Oh well, who's James?
- 6:29And I was like, dude, he just takes some of the most dramatic
- 6:33photos I've ever seen. Sometimes at club loose like
- 6:38you're looking at the photo and you're like.
- 6:40I feel the same way about that. You know what I mean?
- 6:42You capture a moment in there where it's like very emotional
- 6:45type of photo. So I'm like, yeah, well, go
- 6:48check out his Instagram. Thank you.
- 6:50Thank you. Then I check it and now you
- 6:51started something else. It called.
- 6:53Are we allowed to talk about this?
- 6:55Yeah, yeah. But it's called motor.
- 6:58Motor car media. Card Motor car Media card.
- 7:00Yeah, officially went live a little over a year ago, doing
- 7:04pretty well. It was just me kind of wanting
- 7:08to formalize what I do also kind of a rebrand outside of like the
- 7:14drifting world and the the sort of enthusiast world more I guess
- 7:20like collector based, but also just sort of anything that's
- 7:26rare, interesting, valuable, the stuff that you don't necessarily
- 7:32see on the Internet. Like I work with a lot of
- 7:36brokers and stuff that sell, build, buy pre war Grand Prix
- 7:41race cars, stuff like that. Stuff that an entire generation
- 7:45doesn't really know about because it's not on the
- 7:47Internet. Like all the dudes who are into
- 7:49this stuff, they're all like pencil and paper dudes in their
- 7:51like, 30s, forties, fifties, 60s, you know, like there's an
- 7:55entire subculture that nobody really knows about because it's
- 7:58just not on the Internet. Wow.
- 8:01That's some crazy. 2 1/2 minutes into the podcast and we have the
- 8:06most info we've ever received. So pre war supercar like race
- 8:12cars so. Yeah, before F1 was even called
- 8:16F1, back when it was just the Grand Prix.
- 8:19Yeah, this is exactly what I was looking.
- 8:20At OK, these photos are crazy. Well, it's James.
- 8:23Come on, man. Like what?
- 8:24Does this not encapsulate what I just said?
- 8:27It's like. The one on the right right
- 8:28there. The the most, yeah.
- 8:29What? I just got up.
- 8:31Yeah. So that's.
- 8:32A. Looked at my garage.
- 8:33Lotus 7 from the 60s. Death trap death.
- 8:38Trap. I bet, I bet, I bet.
- 8:41I love it though. If you're familiar at all with
- 8:43like Caterham, yeah, this is basically like the Super set
- 8:47Caterham was. Yeah, is this not what this is?
- 8:49Yeah, this is what the Caterham 7 is based off of basically.
- 8:53And this specific one belonged to Lex DuPont, member of, you
- 8:57know, the very affluent, well known DuPont family.
- 9:00He drove it around England. It was like his daily driver.
- 9:04So fuck, that's what I'm saying. What?
- 9:07How? Do you meet these people?
- 9:08What? What we're over here hanging out
- 9:10with? Fucking look.
- 9:12What are we? Doing the craziest part is it's
- 9:14got 16 likes on it and this is the probably the coolest car
- 9:16I've ever seen in my. Life this deserves more like,
- 9:19no, it's just the photos too. It's just I, I don't know, you
- 9:22get to see. OK, first of all, Malcolm, can
- 9:26you go back to the one with the that that cut ain't perfect in
- 9:33today's standard. Somebody's going to call you
- 9:34like a butcher for that. But probably back then, that's
- 9:41maybe as good as you could have gotten it.
- 9:43You know what I mean? Like they were cutting it with a
- 9:45template. Yeah, they were feeling even.
- 9:46They were just. I don't even know.
- 9:49My only guess is probably that the car like that's right where
- 9:52the carbs are. So the car might have at one
- 9:55point had some different carbs that.
- 9:56Had a stack or something? Yeah, yeah.
- 9:58And then it went and got these side intake carbs on it that are
- 10:02under that shroud there. That two piece flare is also
- 10:05crazy. I love looking at the like glass
- 10:08and stuff like that. Like that is a sheet of glass
- 10:11that they just found, like a they made a frame for.
- 10:14Probably. Yeah, look at the linkage, look
- 10:16at look at where the shifter and shit is like what the fuck?
- 10:19The windshield looks like an afterthought, yeah.
- 10:22Yeah, the trance tunnel looks like an afterthought.
- 10:24Look at that bro. The trance is like above the
- 10:27tunnel. Hand built in England in the
- 10:2960s. And it's still running.
- 10:32That's the vibe. Oh, this one's not running.
- 10:34OK, that makes more sense. Well, that makes more.
- 10:35Sense nobody said anything. About it running built in
- 10:39England, yeah, there's no way it's running.
- 10:42Like that's this is kind of the stuff that I love.
- 10:45I mean, I love everything. Cars are cars are it.
- 10:48And you can ask anybody that knows me, cars are it.
- 10:50But like I said, there's an entire world out there of this
- 10:54kind of stuff that nobody knows about.
- 10:57And this is like a car that you could rock up to a cars and
- 11:01coffee with and you'd get as much attention as.
- 11:03Like. A 9/11 GT3, maybe more.
- 11:06You know, it's just interesting stuff, and it's the stuff that
- 11:11will really, really, really kill you if it goes wrong.
- 11:14Yeah. Like no roll cage, no anything.
- 11:17Like the seat that you see there is the seat, there's no
- 11:20seatbelts, like no bolstering anything.
- 11:24That's a car that you would take out on the track.
- 11:26And this is also on also, this is something that you would for
- 11:29some reason see driving through the streets of South Plainfield
- 11:32in New Jersey. That is insane.
- 11:35Like when you see, you ever see anybody driving like an old car
- 11:38on the road? Lately I see a lot of them.
- 11:40This is like a go Kart though. You're not driving.
- 11:43Maybe you're not driving this one on the road.
- 11:44Maybe. I mean, I hope someone is, but
- 11:46it's. So crazy.
- 11:47If you do I hope you got some belts or something.
- 11:49According to James, this shit is pretty.
- 11:51So how, how did you find this car?
- 11:54So they're this guy. So going back, it is a guy,
- 11:58yeah, going back several years. I initially got into the
- 12:03collector car thing because I know a guy who knows a guy, more
- 12:08or less. I went to school with these two
- 12:10dudes. They were a year above me, and
- 12:14they went on to start a collector car business in Philly
- 12:18called LBI Limited. And I didn't hear about LBI
- 12:21Limited until many years later. These guys graduated from my
- 12:24school in O7. I didn't know them personally,
- 12:26but I knew of them and I had friends who were friends with
- 12:29them. So like 10 years goes by, I'm
- 12:33working as a full time salaried in house jewelry photographer
- 12:37for this company in Philly. And we had a shoot that was
- 12:42happening, social shoot, we called them.
- 12:45We'd have a model come in, she'd wear all the jewelry and we'd
- 12:47photograph it. Our makeup artist dropped out
- 12:51last minute, like the morning of, had an emergency, something
- 12:55like that. And this was going to be a 2 day
- 12:56shoot. So it was like a big deal.
- 12:58We needed somebody there. So our backup makeup artist
- 13:02ended up being the life of one of the guys who started LBI
- 13:05Limited. And I heard her talking to my
- 13:08producer about cars and my ears perked up a little bit.
- 13:12So I'm like, hey, you know, like what's going on here?
- 13:17And so she's chatting with me. She's like, Oh, yeah, you got to
- 13:19like, meet my husband, you know, like, blah, blah, blah.
- 13:22And she gives me his name. And I'm like, his name sounds so
- 13:26familiar to me. Why does this sound familiar?
- 13:28And I go home that night and I'm researching it and I'm like,
- 13:31Andrew, oh, shit, I went to school with this guy.
- 13:35Whoa. So the next day I come back to
- 13:39her and I'm like, can you put me in touch with him?
- 13:41You know, like, it's crazy that this is happening, You know,
- 13:44like a decade later, come back full circle on this.
- 13:48And I'm like, holy hell, that's cool.
- 13:50So I went there, checked it out. They were like a full, full
- 13:54operation, big, big storage space, all of that in Northeast
- 14:00Philly, in Frankfurt. And so met with those guys, they
- 14:03didn't really have a position for me at the time.
- 14:07They were just starting to get together their Midwest building
- 14:11out in Pontiac, MI. They were like, well, if you
- 14:13want to move to Pontiac, like we need a guy out there.
- 14:15And I was like, it's not really in the cards right now, you
- 14:19know? It's a little far from us at
- 14:21the. Moment but their photographer
- 14:25Nick started throwing me work on the side.
- 14:29He ran his own thing and after the pandemic happened, I really
- 14:33had a lot of time. So Nick started throwing me work
- 14:36on the side and it was like a lot of collector car stuff He
- 14:40would shoot for RM Sotheby's, Bonhams, all the the big auction
- 14:45houses. So I went out to this shop out
- 14:50in Amish country called DL George and I shot an AR for them
- 14:57and then like that was cool. The owner David George like
- 15:00showed me around the shop. Super nice guy, super duper
- 15:04duper into it. Like his dad started the
- 15:07business and his dad had unfortunately passed away like a
- 15:12year before we met. So we call him Deege.
- 15:16That's his like nickname. Deege was just kind of like
- 15:20taking over the business from his dad.
- 15:21He already knew everything that he had to do to run it and all
- 15:24of that and he was really good at it.
- 15:26So shot this alpha for Deege. He showed me around super nice
- 15:31guy and then I wasn't sure if we were ever going to cross paths
- 15:34again. Then a couple years went by and
- 15:37photographing a gig at this other big car storage facility
- 15:42on the mainline called Car Vault.
- 15:44And it was like a holiday party. And I look across the way and I
- 15:49see this guy that looks kind of familiar to me.
- 15:51And he starts like strolling across the the green that the
- 15:54whole facility is like turfed because it was like a an indoor
- 15:58sports facility. I was about to ask, like, what
- 16:01is this yard you're walking across?
- 16:02Yeah. It's an indoor sporting facility
- 16:05that these storage people bought out and they turn the back end
- 16:08of it into regular self storage. In the front is this place
- 16:11called Car Vault and it's car storage and like a social club.
- 16:16Yeah, I think I heard of this one.
- 16:17Yeah, it's fairly new. It's fairly new.
- 16:19They've been doing their thing for like 2 years now.
- 16:22But I see this guy and he's walking up to me and he's like,
- 16:26hey, you look kind of familiar to me.
- 16:28And I'm like, you look familiar to me too, but I don't know from
- 16:31where. And it like clicked for both of
- 16:33us and we're like, Oh my God, DL George, it's like, yo, so we
- 16:38reconnected there and it was like December of 2022.
- 16:44And indeed just like, hey, I have work, you know, I need a
- 16:47photographer. Do you want to like shoot for
- 16:49me? I was like, cool.
- 16:51So started going out to his shop.
- 16:53I'm usually there like once a month or so and come out and
- 16:56shoot for the day, whatever he needs to get done.
- 16:59So this little Lotus was part of his kind of inventory that he
- 17:03has. That's where a lot of the other
- 17:06like pre war kind of stuff does come from.
- 17:09They do mostly mid century like pre war to early post war race
- 17:16cars. That's kind of what their vibe
- 17:18is. Is there a large market for
- 17:21stuff like that? It's it sounds like a secret
- 17:24club that we're talking about the way that like, are you
- 17:27getting that vibe? Like I feel like we shouldn't be
- 17:29talking about it but like just maybe just cuz I'm looking at
- 17:31this photo. I'm looking at these fenders and
- 17:33they look like motorcycle fenders too.
- 17:35Oh yeah, that shit right there Is the front Fender fucking
- 17:38sporty? Yeah, and the back 1 is a six
- 17:40inch chopper Fender. Yeah, that's an 8 inch chopper
- 17:42Fender. It's basically a motorcycle with
- 17:44four wheels. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:45It's but no, like the way that we're talking about it, like I'm
- 17:49almost like, yeah, I can't, don't, I mean.
- 17:54I mean, these are the kind of things they're hiding in these
- 17:56car storage places. That's what I'm saying.
- 17:58And we don't know anything about this stuff.
- 18:00So it's like, what is it and these?
- 18:03People just buy these cars and they don't even drive them, they
- 18:04just look at them and. Yeah, you'd be surprised.
- 18:08Some of this stuff gets toured around.
- 18:09There's a big tour in Colorado called the Colorado Grand.
- 18:13They just take with the stuff like this and they drive it
- 18:15around for like a week. Can we type that in Malcolm?
- 18:17I would like to a. 1000 miles on old cars and I don't know how
- 18:21they do it because I've ridden in some of these like pre war
- 18:25Grand Prix race cars, stuff like this and even less developed
- 18:28than this. I mean, a lot of the Grand Prix
- 18:30stuff I've been in is, you know, 30 years older than this, like.
- 18:36This is cool. I'm sorry Malcolm.
- 18:38Just thank you. Malcolm.
- 18:39Just googled up some photos of the Colorado Grand.
- 18:42Yep. So we need to do this with D
- 18:46cars. Bro, come on.
- 18:48Yeah, I mean, I don't know if it'd be as cool though.
- 18:50The Colorado Grand but the everything is lowercase except
- 18:53for the D so it's like the Colorado Grand D.
- 18:55Hey, if you get a squad going, like whatever you're driving,
- 18:58it's cool. Hey, we had a we had a buddy
- 19:00recently moved to Colorado. Shout out Andy is there?
- 19:02How much? That Ben's right there.
- 19:04I want to know how much that is. Dude, that the gull wing.
- 19:07SL Gull Wing. Probably a lot.
- 19:09That's at least $1,000,000 car. That's crazy.
- 19:13Props to them for taking it out and driving.
- 19:14Yeah, I don't know why he's dressed like a Nazi, but yeah.
- 19:17Oh, that's a cop. Never mind.
- 19:20Same thing. That Bentley right next to it,
- 19:23that green car there, that's probably close to $1,000,000 as.
- 19:26Well, what? Yeah, yeah, this stuff.
- 19:29But it it like, you're not wrong.
- 19:30It's kind of a secret society because.
- 19:33Yeah, what the fuck? All the people with this stuff,
- 19:36they're not on social media, you know?
- 19:37Oh. Yeah, I don't even know how to
- 19:38work a phone. Look at that guy.
- 19:40Dude, that's speedster Malcolm, can you go?
- 19:42Can you go back up to that white speedster?
- 19:44It's the two door Porsche right there.
- 19:45Oh my God, Yeah, yeah, that's what I'm whipping right there.
- 19:49That. I've driven A356 cabriolet, they
- 19:53are super comfy. It's just compared to the other
- 19:56stuff that I'm seeing. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:01And that looks so cool. Look how short the look, how
- 20:03close the wheels are. Dude the wheels are pretty big
- 20:07for the size of the car. Yeah, dude, I don't know.
- 20:10I kind of like the go back up now.
- 20:14What would you drive in this shit?
- 20:15Oh, right there on the right down that thing.
- 20:18Right there, that's the what was that the Bentley you just
- 20:20pointed out? That's the Bentley.
- 20:21Yeah, yeah, I need a Bentley. Yeah, I'm smoking you.
- 20:24I'm I'm. Or or go up Malcolm, that that
- 20:27middle one right there up right. Yeah, that car in the middle.
- 20:31What's that one in the? Middle.
- 20:32Oh, the silver one, That's a. Cobra.
- 20:34That thing. Is that really?
- 20:35Yeah. Am I maybe?
- 20:40Or maybe because it's missing the glass?
- 20:42It's probably a recreation cobra.
- 20:44But there's no windshield. Or am I blind right now?
- 20:46There's a little tiny windshield.
- 20:47Oh, good, good, good. I could be wrong honestly, like
- 20:51a lot of these cars look so similar from yeah, certain
- 20:53angles, especially when you're looking at a photo like this.
- 20:55And that's what they say about the cars nowadays.
- 20:57So yeah, obviously nothing's changed.
- 20:59This is the time we think it has.
- 21:01I'm wearing them. You know what?
- 21:03Oh, the goggles. Yeah, I'm rocking the goggles.
- 21:06Yeah, you have to you, absolutely.
- 21:07Have like this one. The windscreen's a little
- 21:09larger. I feel like I could hide from.
- 21:11The Ferrari right there. Yeah, that looks.
- 21:16That looks fantastic. 512 bbi. All original.
- 21:21Well, I would. Hold is this?
- 21:23Is this the Magnum Pi car? No.
- 21:26What's Magnum Pi drive? I was getting Magnum Pi and the
- 21:29other guy mixed up. One's a Testarossa.
- 21:32It's it's not that. It's it's not that.
- 21:33Three O 8 GTS, there's Magnum Pi and who's the other guy?
- 21:40Miami Vice. Are they the same?
- 21:42There's 2. Why do I feel like Miami Vice
- 21:44would have a testarosa that's. Why I think vice is the
- 21:46testarosa? You're going to have to help him
- 21:48out now. I think he's already doing that
- 21:50here. What am I looking at?
- 21:52Oh, no, Miami Vice car, I guess if you don't mind, We don't ever
- 21:56look up Ferrari stuff or anything of the like over here.
- 21:59This is not oh, that it was totally not.
- 22:04Oh no, there is. And the Ferrari Testarosa.
- 22:06Yeah. I don't know about a Daytona
- 22:08being in Miami Vice, but Testarosa, yes, Testarosa is it.
- 22:14There it is on the right, that white testarosa.
- 22:17Yeah, the white Testarosa. Oh wow.
- 22:21Oh yeah, dude, that's a 180SX. So that's a that's.
- 22:24A 70s. Car.
- 22:25Damn. Was it really Testarosa were I
- 22:28think late 70s, early 80s. There's three iterations of the
- 22:32Testarosa. So there's the OG, and then
- 22:35there's the 512 TR, and then there's the five, the F512M.
- 22:41Is there a 90s one too? Yeah, it's the F512M.
- 22:44OK. Those are the really expensive.
- 22:46Ones F512M. What was really the difference
- 22:48between that and what we're looking at here?
- 22:49Because I had a bunch of these cars as like toys.
- 22:52The the TR, the 512 TR got some updates that made it a little
- 22:56better driveability wise. They dropped the engine down a
- 22:59little lower in the in the subframe area engine department.
- 23:04Give it a little better weight balance and all of that.
- 23:07The F512M got a lot of stuff like titanium connecting rods in
- 23:10the engine, probably some other titanium bits here and there.
- 23:14Damn. 512 M also doesn't have pop ups.
- 23:17It's got standard headlights, and I believe they're actually
- 23:21Z32 headlights I'm pretty sure. Oh no, I 512 Lamborghini has
- 23:27those headlights for sure. Can we type that in Malcolm
- 23:29Ferrari 512M? We got you working overtime and
- 23:31by we I mean me. 512 M is the most expensive of the three.
- 23:36You can get a Testarossa. For what the.
- 23:38Hell, under 200, maybe even around 100, but 512 M you're
- 23:43looking at north of half $1,000,000.
- 23:47What the fuck is this? I feel like I've never seen
- 23:49this. Before that's cool looking
- 23:51though. Yeah, they are.
- 23:51I actually just photographed one that looked just like this.
- 23:54Yeah, that thing's sick. That's also 180SX but the Super
- 23:57dupe covers. They're very cool cars.
- 24:00The last Ferrari with a flat 12 so.
- 24:03That probably flat 12. That probably sounds so, so
- 24:09good. Are you kidding me?
- 24:10They. Sound real cool.
- 24:12They sound real cool. Gated shifter.
- 24:14All the Ferrari Quarks you'd expect, like the steering wheel
- 24:17is right in front of you and then all the pedals are like 6
- 24:20inches to the right, so you have to.
- 24:21Drive. Oh my God, I'm looking at it
- 24:23right now. Why is it like?
- 24:25That what? What?
- 24:27Because the wheels are so tucked in like why is it like?
- 24:29That partially because the wheels are so tucked in.
- 24:31Also because everything is behind you.
- 24:33So they have to make all the linkage to everything go from
- 24:35the front of the car to the back, like shifter, pedals, all
- 24:39of that stuff. It all has to make it to the
- 24:41rear of the car. That looks so ridiculous.
- 24:44Now, Frankie, I don't mean to relate this to what to my 2002
- 24:48likes as high as 300, OK, but that is exactly how I sit in my
- 24:52car. I'm like this.
- 24:54Your car's like that too. Yeah, that's because I.
- 24:56Just crashed into it. No, the seat bracket is mounted
- 24:59a little fucked off. Even if you look at like an E36,
- 25:04the steering wheel. Column.
- 25:06Nothing about that. Doesn't go straight.
- 25:08Yeah. Does it really?
- 25:09Not there? Yeah.
- 25:10I mean even my Chevy Silverado is like off center.
- 25:12Yeah, yeah, everything is. Yeah, well, at that point you're
- 25:15just rearranging your, your, your feet you're.
- 25:18Just no. But like the seat, the seat's
- 25:21not even in line with the steering wheel in my truck.
- 25:23Yeah. Like you'll look at and you're
- 25:25like, wait a minute. Because that got hidden.
- 25:29Too. I mean, it definitely did, but
- 25:31that's not the reason. But I've seen that in a lot of
- 25:33cars. This looks a bit extreme.
- 25:36No, that's extreme. I'm not even going to hold you.
- 25:37That first photo, that Malcolm, that's crazy.
- 25:39What the fuck are we doing here? Bro that's why it looks insane
- 25:43it's like. Wild getting in these cars
- 25:46because you get in it and you feel like you're sitting on the
- 25:48ground, like you're so low and there's no power steering.
- 25:53So you're just like little like go Kart car.
- 25:56You know, it's crazy. Like the funniest part is like
- 26:00you get in and you put your foot down where you think the brake
- 26:02is and you're like stepping on the clutch and you're like oops,
- 26:05gotta. Move that over, rearrange, and
- 26:07then you could probably get used to it.
- 26:09You do. I'm sure you do.
- 26:10I have. That back one mouth, right?
- 26:12You were just on it, that one. That thing's sick.
- 26:16That's a 180SX. Kind of is.
- 26:18It has literally a 180SX. Yeah, those are those are Cokie
- 26:22tail like look. At the vents.
- 26:23The vents on the sides are crazy.
- 26:25And that's a car modifier. With the kid, yeah.
- 26:27Literally the. Strafes that's like the the, you
- 26:31know, kind of defining yeah piece on the Testarossa that
- 26:36side profile with the strafes all along the.
- 26:39That's not on. That's not on every single one,
- 26:41is it? On all the testeros it is, yeah,
- 26:43yeah. So even the 70s ones.
- 26:45Yep, Yeah. So if it's a Testarosa, if it's
- 26:49in that family, it's got the the little side vents on.
- 26:52It that you don't? Yeah, dumb little holes on the
- 26:54side color that looks. Good.
- 26:56And they're functional too. The the intake ducts for the
- 26:59radiator are right here, so it's not even just for show.
- 27:02And that's a flat 12 you send? Yep, that makes sense.
- 27:05Look how flat the back end of that corner.
- 27:06Yeah, that's it. Just looks like it should be in
- 27:09there. Yeah.
- 27:10Can you lay the engine? Got a hell of an engine in
- 27:12there. This is turning into just a
- 27:15automotive automotive education. Podcast because what do we know
- 27:21about this? Thank God James is here.
- 27:24Oh Oh my bell housing bro. I'll drop that trans in 30 what
- 27:30you could get all the bolts. You have to too, because.
- 27:34The. Biggest thing with Ferraris up
- 27:37until like the late 90s, engine out service every like 5000
- 27:41miles. What the fuck?
- 27:43What? Yeah.
- 27:44What are they doing? New belts, pulleys, all that
- 27:48stuff. 5000 miles for a lot of stuff, yeah.
- 27:52What a piece of shit. What if I put what if, what,
- 27:54what what if? I dude, I'd be the worst Ferrari
- 27:57owner, bro. I would drive that shit.
- 27:58Every day. Yeah, you'd be paying for it
- 28:00too. No, I wouldn't.
- 28:01Yeah, you would. I would start fixing it with gum
- 28:02and tape. I mean, that's kind of how they
- 28:04come from the factory if you. That's what I'm saying like.
- 28:07Deep enough in a Ferrari. Like when you pay for a Ferrari
- 28:10you're getting an engine and a transmission.
- 28:13Everything else is extra. Like you look at the welds on a
- 28:16Ferrari, you don't want to. No way.
- 28:19Yeah, you don't want to. That's crazy.
- 28:21They're amazing to drive. Like it's a it's an experience
- 28:25that you can't put into words and no amount of just talking
- 28:29about it will do it justice. Like you take a Ferrari out on
- 28:33the highway and you mat it and you hear the scream coming out
- 28:37of it and then you like grab the shifter and you click it into
- 28:40the next gear. It's just like, there's nothing
- 28:44like it, dude. Make me want to drive.
- 28:46A crazy experience. Yeah.
- 28:48But then all I'm thinking in my head is I'm like, can I
- 28:50replicate that experience and give myself that feeling with
- 28:53anything else? And the answer.
- 28:55Not an IS3 header. Yeah, yes.
- 28:57It is the other day when my hood flew up.
- 28:59I got a pretty good feeling about it.
- 29:01They put it right in a fourth. Not a gated shifter, but it's a
- 29:04manual. And then the hood flew.
- 29:05Up that's the that's yeah, that's how you match the
- 29:07exhilaration of a. Ferrari, it gave me feelings
- 29:10that I've not felt in a while. Did you pee a little?
- 29:13No, no, a, a, a feeling of anger just went from my toes right up
- 29:18to my fingers. Dude, it was like.
- 29:21And you were like, Derek left the hood open.
- 29:24I know, I know. Derek, he, I, he said don't
- 29:27forget to latch. It is.
- 29:28And then I forgot it. I would say like S2000, yeah,
- 29:32not entirely comparable, but there's things, not a lot of
- 29:35cars out there that you can just like Rev the nuts off of them
- 29:37and they just ask for more. That's so funny because I had a
- 29:40car get dropped off to me the other day that had his buddy who
- 29:43picked him up had an S2000I remembered mine and I was like.
- 29:46That engine is sick. That was seeing that tack go all
- 29:51the way up to 9 and I was like, when like, you know what I mean?
- 29:57Like you're, you're almost like like maybe I should just shift
- 30:02now. But you can literally all the
- 30:04way take it all the way to the to the end.
- 30:06Got to do it 9200 or something like that just and it sounds
- 30:12like you don't even want to be up there sometimes.
- 30:14Yeah, I forget there's AP1 and AP2.
- 30:17AP1 Revs higher. AP1 Revs higher, AP 2 got more
- 30:21torque though 'cause it was. It went from a 2 liter to a 2.2.
- 30:25Yeah. And it looks better, no?
- 30:27AP1 with sixteens the hard teens.
- 30:31AP1 sixteens hardtop white. Yeah, on the Spoon wheels.
- 30:36Good, Yeah. One has an electronic throttle
- 30:39body and one doesn't, right? Or are they both?
- 30:41Probably I don't know that much more about them.
- 30:43I knew all the weird stuff like Cam driven.
- 30:47It was like a single Cam for both the cams.
- 30:52Like like there was a chain that drove the one gear that drove
- 30:56the two cams like or whatever, vice versa.
- 30:59But that that that looked super weird in the front.
- 31:01Sounds like Audi but more reliable.
- 31:03And there is also you want to check your tensioner, Cam chain
- 31:08tensioner or some shit for the front you need that I.
- 31:12Remember the AP 2 was just the better one, but the problem was
- 31:15that the AP one Rev tire. But it sounds like.
- 31:17I don't remember why still. It's not by much, it's like 300
- 31:20RPM. Yeah, it's like, still very
- 31:22good. Yeah, like and.
- 31:25Yeah, I would just put a tune on the AP 2 and have a Rev 300.
- 31:28Dude, I the weirdest thing to me about those cars, and similarly
- 31:33the Honda Fit, is how quick the steering rack is.
- 31:37Yeah, you turn the wheel in an S2000 or a Honda Fit and you
- 31:41feel it like this, and then all of a sudden you're like, like,
- 31:46Oh my God. Like, what the fuck?
- 31:47Like the rack is so quick. Yeah, the the rear suspension on
- 31:52those 2 is they like I think it tows in as it compresses.
- 31:57So they're really easy to end up spinning when you lift off,
- 32:03they'll just throw you. Yeah, that's why a lot of people
- 32:05don't drift them, right. I think that's.
- 32:08Actually I have a buddy who had one.
- 32:10It was his first car. He was like hey I'm looking to
- 32:15get a sports car, can you help me out?
- 32:17I don't know anything about cars.
- 32:18This was like 2020 so he found an S2K in Egg Harbor Township,
- 32:23NJ. He couldn't even drive stick yet
- 32:26so he was like will you come with me to get this car?
- 32:29He brought like 15K in cash in like a little Fanny pack and we
- 32:36went and looked at this car. It was, I forget what your S2K
- 32:39it was if it was an AP1 or AP2, but it was all modded out.
- 32:42It had been resprayed in that like dark burgundy that you
- 32:44could get on like Nissan Altima's, like real dark
- 32:47burgundy. It looked good though.
- 32:49It looked good in the wrong light, it looked like black, but
- 32:51in the right light it was like a deep, deep, deep like red wine
- 32:55had like the spoon trunk, Fender or trunk cover, whatever thing
- 33:00like the tail section. The spoon like tail section had
- 33:03hardcover top so it was just like a coupe you know no
- 33:06convertible to it or anything BC racing coil overs that were like
- 33:11rock hard enki RPF ones and I think a short shifter kit in it.
- 33:18And my buddy got the seller to like drive the car all the way
- 33:23back to Philly for him. And then like the next few
- 33:25weeks, we spent a couple hours each like in South Philly, me
- 33:29just like teaching him how to drive the car in parking lots.
- 33:32And he would like come down to me once he like got it right and
- 33:35could figure it out. And I remember one of the first
- 33:38times that he brought the car down to my place, I was like
- 33:40living in Delco at the time because my wife was doing her
- 33:43her like internship at Crozier. We were living in Delco.
- 33:48My buddy brings the S2K down and we take it out on the highway
- 33:52and we're getting on the highway and I'm just like letting it eat
- 33:56like 9 grand second gear dropping into third just like
- 34:02ripping and we're going down the on ramp and like we hit like a
- 34:05bump and the car was set up so badly.
- 34:09They just. Saw like rock hard, he like put
- 34:13the the suspension on like the softest setting and it was still
- 34:15rock hard because you had like this much Fender gap, you know?
- 34:18So like you had no travel option and you'd like hit a bump in
- 34:22this thing and you're only hope was to keep your foot in it
- 34:26'cause otherwise it was just gonna like bumps to your
- 34:28sideways and like throat you dude.
- 34:31So like it was a riot. It was an absolutely hilarious
- 34:35death trap of a car. Was there nitrous in it?
- 34:37No. When I had sounded like a.
- 34:40Car my friend, babe. When I had that, when I had my
- 34:42S2000, the problem that I had that would do that.
- 34:45And the only reason why I know how terrible that was probably
- 34:49that probably felt is 'cause when I got mine, it was super
- 34:54duper low. And then apparently the S2000 is
- 34:59one of those cars just like the IS where if you don't get it
- 35:02aligned and and it's really low like that, it's just going to
- 35:05pull left, right, forward, back, whatever like and throw you
- 35:10around when you hit the bump because the suspension is just
- 35:12like. Yeah, if you don't have role
- 35:13center correction or anything going like that, it's like the
- 35:16suspension doesn't. Well, just generally just just
- 35:18like if it's not aligned, it will fucking just toss you.
- 35:22And then another thing that I was having was that if I was
- 35:24accelerating and the car was that low, which I ended up
- 35:29pulling it back up, it would vibrate like fuck because you
- 35:34needed to get axle spacers because the axles are super
- 35:38duper pulled like this when you lower an S2000.
- 35:41So I just raised it back up to stock.
- 35:44It was cool. I did some Donuts in mine like
- 35:46it was not that great. It was not like a car that you
- 35:49would just let go of the wheel, just.
- 35:51Let it drift. You would have to like.
- 35:53I mean, no one really drifts that car.
- 35:55Like literally no one drifts. That car I had a buddy named
- 35:57Nino who did he has he had a blue one supercharged now.
- 36:01Like for real drifted it. Yeah, like at Poconos, Really.
- 36:05Yeah. They're worth too much money
- 36:06now. It's very expensive Nino's.
- 36:08Yeah, that's very. That's probably another reason
- 36:10why I guess. Yeah, I think the what's the
- 36:12special? The Club Racer Edition.
- 36:13The CR. Oh, the CR, yeah.
- 36:14Those are worth like, I don't know, 100 grand now or
- 36:16something. Like.
- 36:17That anything with a number though, you know?
- 36:20Yeah. There's only how many of those?
- 36:22I don't. I don't know.
- 36:23I'm not a Honda person. But it was not a lot, no, I'll
- 36:27tell you that much. They're cool though, factory
- 36:29spoiler and all that. Yeah, a lot of them are yellow
- 36:32from the factory, which is awesome.
- 36:33I love yellow parts, man. Cool.
- 36:34Yeah. And not a lot of things.
- 36:38Like I think that one doesn't have AC.
- 36:40I might be mistaken, but there's also like an option where
- 36:46there's no roof. Imagine paying $100,000 for a
- 36:48car with no. AC no, I think, I think
- 36:50generally there's no roof because there's a Tonneau cover
- 36:53that's matched. So they try to make it light.
- 36:55So it make it makes it look really cool with the Tonneau
- 36:57cover. I don't know how light it.
- 36:59Is Malcolm's going shopping right now over there?
- 37:07OK, good. Yeah, they're not too bad.
- 37:09Yet they might have come down or it's still bad, but.
- 37:11I'm telling you, there's no many.
- 37:12Miles. There's no roof on that
- 37:14motherfucker like a retractable. Does it come with a hardtop?
- 37:17I don't know if it comes with a hardtop, it comes with, you
- 37:20know, a soft top. OK, so you can flip up, but at
- 37:24that point you'd be. I would, I mean, I would love
- 37:26that in blue that that'd be the one I get.
- 37:28I. Feel like the CR don't got a
- 37:30roof. I think it's AI.
- 37:32Think it's just a tono cover. I wouldn't be surprised.
- 37:35That I I think so. Oh.
- 37:37Oh, wait. In place of the standard soft
- 37:41top. Yeah dude, I saw one of those
- 37:46brand new in the dealer when I was a kid.
- 37:48Damn. I was like, what the heck is
- 37:50this? Why would you want to put?
- 37:52Why would you want to take the roof off like now it looks like
- 37:56I like, I like well. They come with soft tops, right?
- 37:59Yeah, but I like the that they put the tunnel cover.
- 38:01Do you know what the tunnel cover is?
- 38:02The thing on the back that covers.
- 38:04Oh, that covers the soft tops. Yeah, S 13, S 13 verts have them
- 38:08too. Oh, so that was on there.
- 38:09It came on there. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:11Instead of can you? Probably OEM 1 Malcolm or like
- 38:13A. That was a OEM one.
- 38:15That was a hardtop. That was OEM.
- 38:19I'm confused. OEM.
- 38:21That was an OEM hardtop. OEM hardtop.
- 38:23Yeah, yeah. But like AOEMCR like.
- 38:25Yeah, that's OEMCR. Oh, it comes with that, OK.
- 38:29But the normal cars don't. No, they come with a soft top.
- 38:31No, and, and, and we might be somebody might out there might
- 38:35correct us and say they didn't even come with the hard top.
- 38:38Some like that might have been an option for the CR God knows
- 38:41what. I don't know what I'm thinking
- 38:42how much S2000 OEM hardtop is right now.
- 38:45Shit's like $4000. Forty, $500.
- 38:48I mean that's that's a non negotiable part though.
- 38:50You got to just keep one around in case your buddy comes and
- 38:52sleeps over getting the cover to sleep.
- 38:54Under. Yep, that's perfect.
- 38:56Yeah, dude, James, I feel like you would have it.
- 38:58You're an S2000 guy. You would.
- 38:59You would have an S2. 1000 dude, I've never owned a Honda.
- 39:02But that one though, it's just like a race bred.
- 39:05That's probably the one I would like.
- 39:07Type of machine, yeah. I've like I've considered
- 39:10dropping an F20C in my E36 but I don't know why.
- 39:16Cool. Why?
- 39:17What? Why not?
- 39:18Is that a swap? Is that like a it?
- 39:20Could be if you have enough money.
- 39:22Oh OK, but this hasn't been done yet.
- 39:24This is just like an inspirational thing.
- 39:25Yeah, OK. There's a lot of inspirational
- 39:28things going on up here with my E36.
- 39:31I don't know what's going to happen.
- 39:32I think at this point I want to keep it fairly like it is.
- 39:36The first iteration was going to get A2J.
- 39:39That was 2019 when 2 JS weren't, you know, 15 grand or whatever.
- 39:45And then the iteration that stuck for a while that I don't
- 39:48really think I want to do anymore because it'll ruin the
- 39:51balance of the car was get a 5 three and drop that in and
- 39:57that's a 323 cubic inch displacement and then put 323CI
- 40:02badging on the back of the car. They never made a three 2-3 CI
- 40:07E36. OK.
- 40:09And. Just like catch out all the
- 40:10nerds would be like, it's the wrong badge, but it started up
- 40:13and it's just like. Is that an aluminum block or is
- 40:16that? 53 I don't actually know,
- 40:18probably. Would be aluminum, right?
- 40:19It's a newer one I'm talking. About, I don't know, 5/3?
- 40:21'S, they're like, they're like the ones that you'd find in like
- 40:24Tahoes and everything. Else that's the LQLT.
- 40:27Oh, it probably is a fucking iron block.
- 40:29LQ LQ9 Yeah dude that shit sounds like a truck.
- 40:33That would be heavy as fuck. Every time the one of those V8
- 40:36drive by me or or on grid or on track, you're driving with one,
- 40:41you know it's LQ. I'm like what is that sound it
- 40:45sounds like? Wait, you can eat so?
- 40:47But isn't it almost the same as an LS1?
- 40:49Dude, it just, there's something about the way it sounds.
- 40:52They're like sounds in the family.
- 40:53Yeah. It's like I don't know.
- 40:55I don't, I don't. I'm not AV eight guy.
- 40:57I don't know the whole like delineation.
- 41:00You're about to put one in the beamer.
- 41:02You just do shit and then you figure it out.
- 41:04I should go, you know, like that's all it is, man.
- 41:08Let's be honest, you're a WRX. You're a Subaru person.
- 41:11You're a Subaru person. I am, yeah.
- 41:13I've had my WRX for 7 1/2 years. I bought it off my buddy Nate.
- 41:18It was his kind of like, gift to himself when he graduated from
- 41:24college. We were roommates freshman year
- 41:26of college. So I've known Nate for, I don't
- 41:29know, 3/4 of two decades now. What's that 15 years?
- 41:33Damn, dude, it's a long way to say 15 years.
- 41:36But so it was his car and the whole way that I like got into
- 41:42wanting one of these was I had my best friend's family had like
- 41:46a 97 Outback when I was like 1718.
- 41:51And I just love the way it drove.
- 41:54I think before that even I was kind of into like the sound of
- 41:58the Subarus and all of that. But I really liked how smooth it
- 42:02was like the flat 4, just like doesn't have all the traditional
- 42:05vibration of like inline 4 or anything like that.
- 42:09Super smooth. It drove nice.
- 42:11The all-wheel drive is great. So I was like, I really want a
- 42:15turbocharged Subaru. It's like, these things are
- 42:17cool, man. They sound like nothing else.
- 42:19Like you're like you hear it and you're.
- 42:21Like that's how they get. You that's so the one outside is
- 42:23yours. Yeah.
- 42:24OK, that makes sense. I was like, what the hell is
- 42:26this thing? Doing here.
- 42:27No, I'm just kidding. They they, they come through
- 42:28here from time to time. Yeah, Brian.
- 42:30I hear them whenever I'm at home.
- 42:33Can always tell when one goes by.
- 42:35I do like the Subaru sound when all the when it's an equal
- 42:40length header. Is that the thing?
- 42:41When it gets Evo. When you get rid of the rumble.
- 42:44Yeah, you like it when you get rid of the rumble.
- 42:45Yeah, you like it when it does? But but I've had, I've had, I do
- 42:50know, I had to think about what you meant by what, when it's
- 42:53like how smooth it is. Yeah.
- 42:54Because yeah, it kind of, it kind of do feel a little
- 42:58different. It does feel different.
- 42:59Do you know what I'm talking about?
- 43:00Try to picture it right now. You're driving a Subaru.
- 43:02You Rev it from first, second to third, just like you're driving
- 43:05into town. And like, for some reason it
- 43:09don't, it don't do like the I don't know.
- 43:13It's just I know what you mean by it's smoother.
- 43:15That's why it's called a boxer, because.
- 43:17Yeah, they're opposed. One side, yeah, they're opposed
- 43:19as opposed as it's different than like the timing on like say
- 43:23a, a 180° V 4 would be. So it's like on one side, like
- 43:29when one piston is going out, the other piston is going out.
- 43:32So it's vice versa. So they always cancel.
- 43:36Out versus like in a in one of ours, it's like exactly.
- 43:40That's why like. So many in.
- 43:42The Pistons. Yeah.
- 43:44One cylinder you still which cylinder are you, 123 or 4?
- 43:47I don't that might have been that might have been three, I
- 43:50think just out of time slightly. But tell us about the two J.
- 43:55That thing's kind of smooth, right?
- 43:56Yeah, because, dude, how would that work then?
- 44:00Because the the the Jay-Z line and a lot of the UZ line of
- 44:04motors, right? Yeah.
- 44:05It's like I have this thing where somebody told me, not
- 44:11somebody, but I was watching somewhere and somebody told me
- 44:15that the Toyota line of motors like the UZ and the Jay-Z motors
- 44:18are very balanced. Yes.
- 44:21So like also naturally that straight sixes are pretty.
- 44:24Is that what that but but yet it's it's doing, you know.
- 44:27Yeah, it's just the firing order and the amount of cylinders.
- 44:29Straight sixes from my general understanding is when 2 Pistons
- 44:34are going up, two Pistons are going down and then two Pistons
- 44:37are like basically right in the middle of the cylinder.
- 44:39So they kind of always keep themselves balanced that way.
- 44:43There's like a 4 cylinder. A lot of four cylinders need a
- 44:46counterbalance weight somewhere in the crank.
- 44:49Yeah, yeah, I know. Like I had a Mazda 4 before my
- 44:52WRX. And what the heck is that?
- 44:54Mazda 3 Sorry I was 4 cylinder Mazda.
- 44:57Three. What is?
- 44:58That no, there's no Mazda 4. I'm just making stuff and a mod
- 45:02that some people would do. A controversial mod was to
- 45:05delete the balance shaft. Oh, that's smart, Yeah.
- 45:09So let's like, make the. Let's make the crank.
- 45:11Let's. Just let's just change what the
- 45:14engineers did. What?
- 45:16What is? It's?
- 45:17What was the purpose? I I think it was to.
- 45:20Reduce. Weight.
- 45:21Yeah. Rotating mass.
- 45:22So get like a lightened flywheel or something.
- 45:24Get rid of this shit. Yeah.
- 45:27That's what I did. My Mazda 3 had a lightweight
- 45:29flywheel on a stage 1 clutch in it and it felt great.
- 45:32It was a four. Cylinder.
- 45:33Yeah, those, the V6 ones were just below out, left and right.
- 45:35That's all I remember. Yeah, I don't know.
- 45:37I don't know too much about the V6.
- 45:38The V6 Mazda 3, that shit would blow up left and.
- 45:41Right. Oh, wait, no, no, no, no, I'm
- 45:42thinking about. 6 Is it that 1/3 didn't have a V6?
- 45:46OK, then the Mazda 6. Yeah, yeah, you get a V6 Mazda
- 45:496. Yeah, that shit was terrible.
- 45:51I knew people with those things. They all the motors blew up.
- 45:53But they had a, they had a turbo V61, didn't they?
- 45:57I don't know about they did. They had a speed 6.
- 46:00Yes, and it had a turbo. Are you sure?
- 46:02It was a turbo 4 cylinder. Yeah, I don't.
- 46:04Same 4 cylinder out of the speed three.
- 46:06Oh shit. But they speed 6 was kind of a
- 46:09tragedy. They only made the speed 6 for
- 46:1106:00 and 07:00. I wonder why?
- 46:13And they were all-wheel drive. They were actually like, very
- 46:16slept on. It looked like a really dude.
- 46:18This. I would never buy one of those.
- 46:20Dude when I was looking for a first car I thought the speed 6
- 46:23looked cool but I also thought the RX8 looked really cool.
- 46:26Yeah. So similarly they've had this
- 46:29the bubbly fenders and the RX or the the speed 6 like was pretty
- 46:34proportional like you had a short trunk, long hood.
- 46:37Dude RX8 looks way better than a a speed 6 dude.
- 46:40I don't. Know Malcolm?
- 46:42Do you mind? Way better.
- 46:43Generation of Mazda 6. They kind of.
- 46:45There was fire kind of good. It was so nice.
- 46:47RX8. RX8 looks sick.
- 46:49What are you like? You don't have to replace the
- 46:51apex seals. You don't have to replace the
- 46:53engine in the Mazda 6. OK, look.
- 46:55Look how good this thing looked. No.
- 46:57Yes. Are you kidding me?
- 46:58Yes, Malcolm, come in. No.
- 47:01Yeah, looks cool, yeah. Looks kind of like an EVO.
- 47:04Look how small the lights are an.
- 47:06Evo. Yeah, look at the proportions
- 47:07you got, like the short trunk. That looks like a Saab it.
- 47:10Kind of looks like a Evo, like an American car or something.
- 47:13Oh like a like a GT? Like a GTO?
- 47:16They were owned by Ford or not owned, but like Ford, had a
- 47:18controlling stake in. Modeling.
- 47:20Isn't this a Mondeo? Isn't this a Mondeo?
- 47:23I think you might be right. Is you saying that I would not
- 47:27make up that this is a Mondeo? My Mazda 3 had a lot of four
- 47:30parts on it. I would believe it, yeah.
- 47:33Frankie, look at the, look at the, literally look at the I'm
- 47:35trying my hardest and I don't see now that's a car.
- 47:38Right there. That looks good.
- 47:39Yes, that's. Silver one right there.
- 47:41But the Mazda speed three that's sick hard on the on the veil
- 47:45side. I still.
- 47:46Want I still want an RX8 not gonna lie.
- 47:48RX eights are awesome. Man, you seem like a a pretty
- 47:52intelligent guy. You need an RXC.
- 47:56I'm glutton for everybody. Everybody we know who is pretty
- 47:59intelligent, who's an engineer or thinks like an engineer.
- 48:03Rotary. Yeah, they're cool and you can
- 48:06make them sound nasty. Like how a car sounds is one of
- 48:10the like defining points for one.
- 48:12Yes, it's got to sound good. It's one of the senses in your
- 48:15body where like. Like that color?
- 48:19It it will trigger other senses, like I don't know, if I hear
- 48:22something, I can almost fucking smell and taste and see it.
- 48:25Like I'm like, Oh yeah, yeah. It's a good color too.
- 48:30Dude, that's a, That's AR. Yeah, R3.
- 48:32R3 Yeah. That's what Miyagi had right
- 48:35under the red one an R. 3. Yep, he had that.
- 48:38He had an R3 dude, that's the best RX8 you could have.
- 48:41Yep. What the fuck?
- 48:44Got rid of that shit. That shit's actually the only.
- 48:47RX8 that's worth bread right now.
- 48:50Like if you were to sell one like, you know?
- 48:52The thing that sucked about this one is like no good body kits
- 48:55are fit that because they don't fit the fenders.
- 48:57What are you talking, dude? Oh.
- 48:59Yeah, body kit only the only the one before that.
- 49:02Slam it. Yeah, I would take that with
- 49:04like a what? Ari Mamma Mia probably makes
- 49:08something. Oh, look at that.
- 49:09Wow, just like that. Lower it a little bit more.
- 49:12I'll take the one that's not a :) in the front.
- 49:14That's fine. But they kind of all are.
- 49:17Look at the yeah. Dude, kind of a Mazda thing.
- 49:19Yeah, it's the it's a Mazda, but the R3.
- 49:21Yeah, but it gets worse, like as the years go.
- 49:23On the R, get happier. See.
- 49:25Look at that one. That one's like.
- 49:27Yeah, they get way happier as the years go on.
- 49:31I don't. Like it My Co worker took me
- 49:34around in one of one of like for a little bit in his and this is
- 49:39a fun car. Yeah, it is so fucking.
- 49:42Fun. One of the coolest sounding
- 49:43cars, yeah. Yeah, they sound awesome.
- 49:45The little like suicide doors. Yeah, so cool.
- 49:48Oh yeah. That's so roof amazing.
- 49:50Any sunroof that comes out like that when it opens, it's my
- 49:52favorite. Swoopy interior?
- 49:54Does that make sense? Like everything is like very
- 49:56geared. Isn't.
- 49:56This. I actually fucking hated the
- 49:58interior. Isn't the center like kind of
- 49:59like Rotary? Yeah, shaped.
- 50:01It's it's like a little triangle guy.
- 50:03That tried to make everything a Rotary.
- 50:05Yeah, it's so retarded. Like look at the fucking circle
- 50:08in the. Middle, yeah.
- 50:09Nah, dude. Then the shifter is a rotor.
- 50:11Yeah, the shifter is a triangle and the dashboard that in every
- 50:15single car is cracked. Really.
- 50:17Yeah, they all crack right there on the right, right in front of.
- 50:20The look at this stupid E brake. It's a fucking knife.
- 50:23I'm grabbing the as long as as long as that thing is locking.
- 50:26Your handle, yeah, it is a vacuum cleaner.
- 50:28As long as it's locking it up, I'm grabbing the fuck out that
- 50:32thing. Look at the fucking ship now.
- 50:33It's a rotor. Look at the look at the seats.
- 50:36You know what's crazy? That's a S15 trans in there.
- 50:39It's called style, sweetie. Look up.
- 50:41There rotor. It can't be bought, but that's a
- 50:43S15 trans I'm pretty sure. What?
- 50:46The rear tail end of that I'm pretty sure is an S15.
- 50:50It might be, it might be is. It not and it shares it with the
- 50:54S2000 as well. Yes, just the back.
- 50:58What you mean the? Back like the like the actual
- 51:00gearbox, the actual. Yeah, the coolest part was the
- 51:03back seats. The.
- 51:03Center. Console went all the way back.
- 51:05Right kind. Of like, Oh yeah, this shit like
- 51:08a Bentley for real. Individual seats, chairs, you
- 51:12could even call them. Yep, I wonder.
- 51:13I wonder what was in that little.
- 51:15Oh, it's probably the handle. I'll tell you what.
- 51:17Where? Right there on the door.
- 51:20It looks like the door handle Yeah on.
- 51:21The door handle, I thought. I thought an umbrella might come
- 51:23out of there. Yeah, right.
- 51:27Dude, this was a really car that I regrettably did not get to
- 51:30own. I'm.
- 51:30Surprised you didn't have one of.
- 51:31These Yeah, me too. I don't know what you can get
- 51:33them for now but like. Like 4 I feel like yeah.
- 51:35Like 4 bucks 4 bucks 4. 1000 I know.
- 51:38You can get them for like 4 grand with like you know,
- 51:41100,000 miles on yeah or something like.
- 51:42That but then you. Don't want to buy that.
- 51:44Now you're now you're gambling. Yeah, I mean, you've been
- 51:46gambling. You're like you've been
- 51:48gambling. You're like OK, tired with the
- 51:51Lotto. I didn't even realize I was
- 51:52gambling until after I bought my WRXI.
- 51:54Like bought it and then realized everybody's like.
- 52:00No but dude my other friends who are like you all skate by.
- 52:06Yeah, 'cause they checked their oil.
- 52:07They do the things that are needed for the car.
- 52:10Yeah, it's crazy. 85,000 miles online.
- 52:13Still original transmission, original engine.
- 52:16Better. Better pumpkin, that is.
- 52:20What other preventative maintenance have you done
- 52:22though? All right, so it gets oil
- 52:25changes every 3000 miles 3. Yeah, synthetic.
- 52:28Yeah, Modal 8100. Holy.
- 52:31Crap, dude. Yeah, that thing's living
- 52:33forever blue. OEM filter a lot of dudes will
- 52:36like swear by like the Tokyo Roki filters and stuff like
- 52:39that. I'm like OE Ms. fine gets the
- 52:41job done. Just follow maintenance like
- 52:47plugs every 60K. Make sure there's oil in it.
- 52:49Make sure there's oil in it. Yeah, check the oil every other
- 52:51time you fill up. And you take this thing pretty
- 52:53far because obviously your your work probably takes you pretty
- 52:56far. Yeah, I put like 12,000 miles a
- 52:57year on it. Jesus.
- 52:59Yeah, yeah, it's fine. It doesn't.
- 53:02I just did a 400 mile trip last weekend and didn't lose a drop
- 53:06of oil. How many, how many miles are in
- 53:08it? A. 112 I got it at 28.
- 53:11So now you now you are probably looking at the timing valve.
- 53:15Oh. Yeah.
- 53:16Oh, you did that again, Like you did that because that's 100,000
- 53:20miles. That's that's.
- 53:21Like 90,000 if you're you. It's 10 years, they say like 10
- 53:24years or 100K, but we did it early because I did it like when
- 53:29the car was 10 years old, so like 2022 and the tensioner was
- 53:33weeping a little bit like we pulled the timing cover off.
- 53:35The tensioner was losing some some fluid, but it's like just
- 53:41don't beat the shit out of it. Like that's, that's what all
- 53:43these dudes do is they like get them and then they like bang
- 53:46them off limiter gear for gear for gear and then they're like,
- 53:49why blow up? And it's like.
- 53:51The head gaskets will blow. Though dude, there's just like a
- 53:53different level of like beating them up.
- 53:55It's crazy. The turbo cars were never an
- 53:57issue with the head gaskets. Turbo cars came from the factory
- 54:00with MLS head. Gaskets, yeah, yeah, everyone
- 54:02always swears by the the OEMSTI head gaskets, the NA.
- 54:08DJs from the early twos that like late 90s early 2000s up
- 54:11until 2010, those had the head gasket issues.
- 54:14So anytime you see anybody making fun of Subaru WRXS for
- 54:18head gaskets doesn't exist. Those are all the Subarus that
- 54:22my brother loves. Yeah, they're in that window
- 54:25that you just did that those years are the Subarus that my
- 54:31brother specifically. I mean, they were still like,
- 54:35they put flat fours from Subaru in airplanes, you know, like
- 54:38they're reliable engines. You just have to actually take
- 54:41care of them. EJ22, Indestructible.
- 54:43You put a quarter million miles on it, EJ. 22 Which one is that?
- 54:46What is that? It's.
- 54:46From like the GC 8 like late. 90s yeah, dude, that's the one.
- 54:50Two liter, that's the one that my brother has.
- 54:52Tons of them. You can't blow those up.
- 54:55You can't. Yeah, A.
- 54:58Couple of hours yeah, I I put a turbo on it.
- 55:01Remember that one I would drive here from time to time with the
- 55:03the white 1 and I was driving home from here and the timing
- 55:05belt snapped. Oh my God, that was.
- 55:08Sounds like maintenance to. Me, that was dude, we just did
- 55:12it. I don't know what freak accident
- 55:13it was really. I did it or not.
- 55:15I did it. My brother.
- 55:16My brother had it like thousands of miles prior to that but
- 55:20within the window not. It just snapped, but then we
- 55:24replaced it and it just ran totally fine.
- 55:25Yeah, well, I have my buddy Ricky out in Nevada.
- 55:29He had he has he might still have it GD chassis.
- 55:33I think it was a BLOB eye and the the Cam sprocket snapped off
- 55:38one day like he was driving it. The whole Cam sprocket snapped
- 55:42off and he thought the car was done.
- 55:44Like he was like, well that's game over because they're
- 55:46interference engines. So it's like you're cooked.
- 55:49So jokingly I think he was like recording and he went in to like
- 55:52Rev the car more or something like that.
- 55:54He's like whatever it's done. They like took that car and they
- 55:58redid the timing on it and everything and he's still
- 56:00driving it. Yeah, dude, that's exactly what
- 56:03that's exactly what happened to us.
- 56:05Yeah, the 2 liters and the 2.2 liters sometimes.
- 56:08You get lucky. Sometimes you get lucky.
- 56:10Well, sometimes you get lucky. I looked it up just as you said,
- 56:13interference motor and after I popped the timing cover off and
- 56:17saw that the timing belt was just non existent, I was like oh
- 56:21done. And then we've just put the
- 56:24timing. My brother came over, put a new
- 56:25timing belt on it, turned it on, shit was totally fine.
- 56:29No smoke or. Anything.
- 56:30No, it just turned right on. I was driving mint.
- 56:33Yeah, that's lucky. If like, the belt ends up in a
- 56:36spot where it's chafing, that's going to, you know, eat the belt
- 56:41real fast. Oh, OK.
- 56:42Something like that. Like if it's not, if the guides
- 56:44aren't quite there, like the guides were installed improperly
- 56:47or something like that, it's going to chafe the belt.
- 56:50And after so many, you know, thousands of Revs, it's just
- 56:53going to like eat the belt through.
- 56:55I've seen that happen also. Or Amazon timing belts.
- 56:59I was going to say Gates timing belt kits don't do it.
- 57:04Really don't do. It you're not good.
- 57:05No. The blue one, everybody, Yeah,
- 57:07everybody knows the blue one I've.
- 57:08Never seen any problems with them but.
- 57:10Dude, no. In the Subaru world you don't do
- 57:13a gates kit like ever. It's not necessarily a belt
- 57:16itself, it's all the other components.
- 57:18Like if you can get a gates kit that's 100% made in the US.
- 57:22Yeah, I heard something about like some of them not being made
- 57:25if. Your Gates kit has made in China
- 57:27parts on it, like bearings, rollers, stuff like that.
- 57:30That stuff is prone to failure. That's why like OEM is
- 57:33recommended, Azin is recommended and that's like it.
- 57:37If you if you're like selling the car tomorrow, throw a Gates
- 57:40kit at it. Nobody's gonna, you know, like,
- 57:45I mean like a Gates kit is significantly cheaper from what
- 57:48I remember. But like, you know, if you want
- 57:52to risk that, go ahead. It's a 10,000.
- 57:54Dollars Johnny was talking about Gates 2 like that.
- 57:57He was, he was saying something. I'm trying to think what I've
- 57:59run a Gates timing belt on, but I don't think I use all eyes and
- 58:04shit just because it's usually an option.
- 58:07Yeah, and that's usually what it says on the OEM shit, so that's
- 58:11what I buy. Yeah, my wife's Impreza is
- 58:13running a Gates kit. Knock on wood.
- 58:16You're a crazy guy bro. Oh my, my buddy did the the
- 58:21timing job on it and he was like, yeah, I'll just order the
- 58:23parts like no worries. And I show up with the car for
- 58:26him to like do the timing job and it's a Gates kit.
- 58:28And I was just like, well, this car sees like 4000 miles a year
- 58:31so. I think it'd be fine.
- 58:33Yeah, it's been a few. Years.
- 58:34It's better than what was on there, probably.
- 58:36Yeah, yeah, for sure. So what was on there?
- 58:38It was definitely cooked. You know, like this car only has
- 58:43to last another like three to four years on to somebody else.
- 58:47So when you when you got here, you said something to me that I
- 58:49want to bring up. You said you're like, he said.
- 58:52I didn't get into cars till I was like, how old were you, 30?
- 58:55Man, like I didn't have a car in my own name with my own title
- 59:00until I was like 2526 and. You didn't get into cars till
- 59:04then. So I was like soft into cars,
- 59:07you know, I would like watch Top Gear.
- 59:08I was like new to GTR was all this stuff.
- 59:11But like, I never had the accessibility to cars as a
- 59:15younger person. I lived in, I come from this
- 59:20place in PA called Coatesville. It's a former steel town.
- 59:24You know, it's kind of gone the way all the steel towns have
- 59:26gone. They're kind of like in a sad
- 59:27state now. And I lived there and it was
- 59:29like this town that's bordering poverty basically.
- 59:34And I lived in a, a little borough of South Coatesville
- 59:38called Modena. So it's like even more to
- 59:42bordering on property. Like lots of people like coming
- 59:44in and out rental properties, like very working class, if
- 59:47that. And so after 6th grade, I was
- 59:51going to get put in this special school that Coatesville was
- 59:53starting up like a new like revolutionary tech school with
- 59:58laptops and everything. And this was just part of the
- 1:00:01public school system. And then that like fell apart.
- 1:00:04It flopped. It collapsed like before.
- 1:00:07The first, you know, year started, so my parents were
- 1:00:10like, well, we don't want you just go into another school in
- 1:00:13this school system that's like not doing that well where you're
- 1:00:16not going to get the proper, you know, amount of attention or
- 1:00:19education or whatever. My family is all very educated,
- 1:00:24like basically everybody in my family's going to college
- 1:00:26graduated. We've got doctors, lawyers, like
- 1:00:29everything, but they were like, we're going to do our best to
- 1:00:34get you the best education that you can have.
- 1:00:36So they sent me to this public or not public, this private
- 1:00:39school that was like 30 minutes away.
- 1:00:41It's a boarding school. It's like 180 boys basically.
- 1:00:44I didn't want to live there. I didn't live there.
- 1:00:46I actually went there from 7th to 12th grade.
- 1:00:48Didn't spend one night there. But sports were mandatory, like
- 1:00:53after school sports. So I'd get on a bus at like 6:00
- 1:00:57AM and I'd get home from there at like 6:00 PM like Monday
- 1:01:02through Friday. So I.
- 1:01:03Had that 12 hours away from the house.
- 1:01:05Yeah, as a child. Yeah, for six years, really so.
- 1:01:11I want to go home and have APB and J right away.
- 1:01:14Yeah, I had. You're crazy.
- 1:01:15I like for one, I had no time to have like a job or anything like
- 1:01:19that because being a private school, there was a lot of
- 1:01:22education, like you had a lot of like homework and stuff like
- 1:01:25that. And luckily, like this was a
- 1:01:27very, very subsidized private school.
- 1:01:29Like my parents don't make a lot of money.
- 1:01:31We don't come from a lot of money like.
- 1:01:33So we're luckily in a situation where the school is very
- 1:01:36subsidized and you could like afford to send your kids there.
- 1:01:41But I had no time to have a job. And I also had no reason to like
- 1:01:47have a car really because I was getting bussed there one way and
- 1:01:49my parents were picking me up the other way.
- 1:01:51And I also had no friends with cars because like, most of the
- 1:01:56kids lived at the school and I had one best friend outside of
- 1:02:01there who still went to public school and like, he wasn't a car
- 1:02:04guy. So like, high school for me was
- 1:02:08not a time where I had cars. I was actually terrified of
- 1:02:10driving. I didn't get my license until I
- 1:02:13was almost 19. I was absolutely terrified of
- 1:02:16driving. So then I went to Philly for
- 1:02:20college, and you don't need a car in Philly either.
- 1:02:23Yeah. You know, when I was at Drexel,
- 1:02:24and Drexel is a school that doesn't have summer vacation.
- 1:02:29I had the first summer after freshman year off.
- 1:02:33And then after that, you're in class year round.
- 1:02:35You have like really a week or two off between semesters.
- 1:02:38Yeah, my, my bachelor's degree was like 180 credits, which is
- 1:02:42like a master's at a lot of other.
- 1:02:44Places my. Gosh, what the fuck?
- 1:02:46Wait, what major did you graduate with?
- 1:02:48Digital media BS and digital media so.
- 1:02:52What the fuck? How many, How many, How many?
- 1:02:55Is a normal one. Don't.
- 1:02:56Be asking me that it's. Like 120 to 100 and. 30 I think
- 1:02:59120 is the number that I was thinking of.
- 1:03:01So I spent basically like from 6th grade until I was like 22,
- 1:03:08just like immersed in school like completely that was it.
- 1:03:13That was the life, you know, And so I had no time for cars or
- 1:03:17anything like that. And also I just came from such
- 1:03:18a, an impoverished area and a place where, you know, we didn't
- 1:03:22have a lot of money. Like I specifically remember a
- 1:03:23time being like a little tiny kid, like four or five years old
- 1:03:27in like daycare and like the daycare attendees like pointing
- 1:03:32out to each other that I had a raggedy old like bred tie for a
- 1:03:37zipper pull because the zipper had broken off my coat.
- 1:03:40Like we didn't like everything was hand me down, you know all
- 1:03:43that. My mom worked on farms, like
- 1:03:45horse farms. You know, my dad had a good
- 1:03:47office job, but my mom like was always working on horse farms.
- 1:03:52So I came from like a very kind of mixed like low middle class.
- 1:03:57So when did the need for the car just occur?
- 1:04:00I was like after college I started to need a car more and
- 1:04:04more and all through late college I was borrowing friends
- 1:04:06cars and stuff like that. My best friend, him and his
- 1:04:10little brother and all of his cousins all had Volvos.
- 1:04:13So like my like late teens, early 20s were spent under a
- 1:04:18Volvo 240. Oh, that's all my neighbor got.
- 1:04:21240 or no? Yeah, turbo wagon and wagon
- 1:04:27actually 2 wagons that he got a boxy guy.
- 1:04:31I like, I like new Volvos. OK.
- 1:04:34I was like, these are damn cool cars.
- 1:04:36But like after college it was moved back home for a little bit
- 1:04:41or I was staying in the city with my girlfriend at her
- 1:04:44parents house. Their parents owned a house in
- 1:04:46West Philly because her brother had gone to school before us and
- 1:04:49they were like, we'll just buy a house and rent it out to people
- 1:04:52and you won't have to pay rent. But after so long, it just
- 1:04:56became like my mom was like, you need a car here, take my old
- 1:04:59car. So my first car was my mom's 96.
- 1:05:03Geoprism. Geoprism. the Hatch.
- 1:05:07No, it's not a hatch. It's a sedan.
- 1:05:08Yeah. Geo I know.
- 1:05:10What that is? Yeah, Geo was like.
- 1:05:11A it's like a Corolla. Yeah, it was.
- 1:05:13That's what it was, yeah. She bought, she bought this car
- 1:05:16brand. She leased it in 96 brand new.
- 1:05:19It was, Yep, fine. Frankie Black beans.
- 1:05:23Yeah. He hasn't.
- 1:05:24That's a Corolla. But that just.
- 1:05:27Like that? That's Frankie Beans right
- 1:05:28there. Yeah.
- 1:05:29So we had this car in our family for 20 years and it became mine
- 1:05:34at like 220,000 miles. Nice.
- 1:05:37And it it still got like 35 to 40 miles to the gallon.
- 1:05:42Malcolm right there to the right of that, to the right of that
- 1:05:44one. They don't make them like they
- 1:05:45used to. Nope.
- 1:05:46Bottle fives. Hell yeah.
- 1:05:48That has got to be in the no. It's in Massachusetts, but I
- 1:05:50thought it was in the Philippines.
- 1:05:52That's like something you would see in the Philippines.
- 1:05:54I had a Corolla 4AF Efe. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:00Like a 1.6? Yep.
- 1:06:02Or if you got the prism I think LSI or GSI you can get a 1.8.
- 1:06:08But anyway this was my first car and I had it until like 2016
- 1:06:14when I bought my Mazda. But this was this was it.
- 1:06:18This was my ride. And then what?
- 1:06:19You had the Mazda 6 Mazda. 3. Yeah, Mazda 3 four-cylinder.
- 1:06:23Yeah, but the Geo is just mechanically it was good, but it
- 1:06:27was rotten through. Like the rockers were completely
- 1:06:30gone, the B pillars were gone. Like at the rocker.
- 1:06:34Like you could see into the rocker there was.
- 1:06:36Half of it's going to fly away or what's?
- 1:06:38Up this much of the B pillar was gone.
- 1:06:40The bottom of the B pillar was just non existent.
- 1:06:43So. I drove that thing until like it
- 1:06:46was like, if I get T boned, somebody's just going to drive
- 1:06:50through me and keep going. I was like, I need a newer car.
- 1:06:54I need something new. So I got back from a trip and
- 1:07:00found this Mazda 3 at a local dealership because I was a
- 1:07:02Toyota dealership and I wanted it.
- 1:07:04I've been doing a lot. I still didn't know much about
- 1:07:06cars like originally I was gonna look into like a newer like
- 1:07:10Corolla S like an 07:00-ish. Yes.
- 1:07:13Ohh those are good two ZZ, you know.
- 1:07:15Those were cool. You know, just a Corolla with.
- 1:07:17Like everything about Toyota. Just just, just just Toyota,
- 1:07:20just. Like Toyota engines in a
- 1:07:22Corolla. I'm like what?
- 1:07:23Yeah, dude, dude, I have had like a bunch of these Toyotas
- 1:07:26like it's. Just so crazy.
- 1:07:27Dude 2 ZZ good, one ZZ no good. That's all you need to know.
- 1:07:32Like one ZZ likes to blow up, two ZZ less likely to blow.
- 1:07:36Up is it in a sports car or any sort or no that's.
- 1:07:38No, it's up in a Toyota Matrix. OK.
- 1:07:41Yeah, I kind of looked into a matrix too.
- 1:07:43Yo X you get. These with all-wheel drive,
- 1:07:45yeah, but they only came in automatic with all-wheel drive
- 1:07:48and also. So you wanted you wanted a
- 1:07:50manual? Yeah.
- 1:07:51So was the GO manual. The GO was manual, yeah.
- 1:07:54Oh dude, that was problem. That's how you got introduced
- 1:07:57to. My mom was the stick shift
- 1:07:58driver in the car or in the family?
- 1:08:00Yeah. And that was that was it.
- 1:08:01It was like between her and my friend's dad who had inherited,
- 1:08:07unlike 87 Isuzu Trooper diesel manual.
- 1:08:12I learned to drive stick on those two cars and it was like
- 1:08:15the trooper. You literally could not stall it
- 1:08:18out. Like it would just punish you.
- 1:08:20Like if you got the shift wrong, you know, or the timing wrong or
- 1:08:22whatever. Just just it wouldn't shut off.
- 1:08:26It would just keep like. Wait, I want to see this.
- 1:08:29Guy, it was just a little high enough just so that it can like
- 1:08:31keep it going. Yeah, 'cause this diesel, it had
- 1:08:34so much torque, like it couldn't die.
- 1:08:35Isuzu Trooper. Diesel though 87.
- 1:08:38I didn't even know that that was 8687.
- 1:08:40I think that it's called the trooper.
- 1:08:41Like dude, you know? How?
- 1:08:43It has. Come on.
- 1:08:44It. Had like seats out of an RV in
- 1:08:46it or something so they were super.
- 1:08:48Damn. Bro I need.
- 1:08:50This. It was white.
- 1:08:51Yeah, it looked like this. Yep.
- 1:08:52Dude, what? Yeah.
- 1:08:54That's a diesel I don't. I don't know what that one is,
- 1:08:56but you could get them the one that's.
- 1:08:58Sweet. Learned on was a diesel.
- 1:09:00Yeah, cool cars. Oh, I would have kept that man.
- 1:09:02I know. Holy crap, I I might have to
- 1:09:04look into this shit. They got ball joints on that
- 1:09:07shit. I do not want to go.
- 1:09:09They don't want to do this again.
- 1:09:10Yeah, they don't got that situation.
- 1:09:13That thing looks like if you had a kid draw a truck.
- 1:09:18Or a Jeep. Yeah.
- 1:09:20Bro. That's a Cherokee if you fucking
- 1:09:22drew like a rectangle. Dude, this is.
- 1:09:26Cool man. It was a cool car.
- 1:09:28It looked kind of like that one with like the roof rack on it.
- 1:09:31I think it had some some like sibbies on the front of it or
- 1:09:33something but like it was. 4 cylinder or.
- 1:09:37I think it was. I didn't know too much about it
- 1:09:39at the time. That's like an extremely foreign
- 1:09:42looking, yeah. I'm shocked this is even in this
- 1:09:44country. Yeah.
- 1:09:45Yeah, it was like it had been, it had been my friend's family's
- 1:09:49like grandfather's car and then it got passed down.
- 1:09:52I think he passed away or something and it got passed down
- 1:09:54to like my friend's parents. And it was, it wasn't like a
- 1:09:58daily or anything. It was just like they had like 7
- 1:10:01cars at all times. Different cars for different
- 1:10:03purposes, but it was like the car they take out in like a
- 1:10:06snowstorm, stuff like that. It was a tank.
- 1:10:08They were like, yeah, that is the tank of the family.
- 1:10:11Like there's always that. It had like I think it had like
- 1:10:13locking dips like 4 low. Fire like, that's what I'm
- 1:10:16saying bro. That's why I was looking at this
- 1:10:18bro. Isuzu makes the diesel.
- 1:10:20Fucking. Engines, dude, you're.
- 1:10:21Telling me this is going to be a piece of crap.
- 1:10:24They make the Duramax too. Oh.
- 1:10:29You know what I'm? Saying make the best diesel
- 1:10:31engines. They had it for a while and then
- 1:10:33like it was basically like it was basically like farm tractor
- 1:10:36status, you know, like it was never going to really like be
- 1:10:39Rd. worthy anymore like rotten out all this stuff.
- 1:10:44I think somebody else ended up buying it and actually like
- 1:10:46turning it into their like farm truck.
- 1:10:47Yeah, but it was a fun truck to to kind of learn on and get I.
- 1:10:51Wonder how much those? Costs.
- 1:10:52I'm dumb checking. Carl's already on Marketplace I.
- 1:10:55Just want to know real quick because like why is that?
- 1:11:01So when did you start? I mean, you were going to school
- 1:11:02for photography, kind of. I went to school mostly for
- 1:11:06animation. Really.
- 1:11:08Yeah, the photography thing. My dad got me my first camera
- 1:11:12when I graduated high school. He got me a Canon Rebel.
- 1:11:15OK. And, but like all through like
- 1:11:18maybe late middle school and high school, I was obsessed with
- 1:11:21cameras. Like when I when my, when I
- 1:11:23finished fifth grade, my like fifth grade graduation gift from
- 1:11:27my parents that I asked for was a Polaroid izone.
- 1:11:29Do you guys remember those? Yeah, wait, what's a izone?
- 1:11:32Skinny camera. Yeah, it had like with the
- 1:11:35imprints out the bigger. Little no, this is little
- 1:11:38thumbnail size pictures. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:41Yep, this yo. Oh my God.
- 1:11:44Ah, dude, I. Yeah.
- 1:11:46So I had one of these in year 2000.
- 1:11:47Why don't we still have? These we do.
- 1:11:50It's called the iPhone. No, fuck that shit.
- 1:11:53The. Instant camera thing has just
- 1:11:54blown up. You can get so many different
- 1:11:55instant cameras dude. Seriously.
- 1:11:57I mean, we can. I didn't get.
- 1:11:58One of those, yeah, maybe we should hit like a little
- 1:12:00fashion. So I had one of these and then
- 1:12:03like I was always swiping my parents like point and shoot or
- 1:12:06like camcorder or whatever to make stupid little like videos
- 1:12:08with like action figures and stuff like that.
- 1:12:10I was just obsessed with all of it, you know, So I thought I
- 1:12:13wanted to be an engineer. And then like senior year of
- 1:12:16high school, we had like a guest engineer come in and like,
- 1:12:19somebody's like, oh, what's it like being an engineer?
- 1:12:21And he just like, flat out was like, well, get ready to sit at
- 1:12:23a desk all day and do a lot of paperwork.
- 1:12:25And I was just like. That guy fucked.
- 1:12:28You up I was like dude like well because I wanted to be hands on
- 1:12:32you know like I took AI took a shot class where we like
- 1:12:34disassembled a 2 stroke motor and had to put it back together
- 1:12:37like and make it run I. Loved that stuff, I did too.
- 1:12:40I was like, all about it, you know, So I wanted to be more
- 1:12:44probably of like a machinist or something than an actual
- 1:12:47engineer. But like, I don't know, I just
- 1:12:50like, I wanted to be creative and I wanted to do something
- 1:12:52with my hands. I didn't want to sit at a desk
- 1:12:54all day. And it just kind of turned into
- 1:12:57like, we found the digital media program at Drexel, which was
- 1:13:01still fairly early on. And I was like, whoa,
- 1:13:03animation's cool. Like I like gaming and like,
- 1:13:05I've always wondered how like 3D is done and like movies and
- 1:13:08stuff like that. So my dad got me this camera and
- 1:13:12then three months later I started at Drexel and like I was
- 1:13:15always taking photos, like always.
- 1:13:18Like anytime I had free time, the camera was out and I was
- 1:13:23really big in a paintball. So I was on Drexel's collegiate
- 1:13:27paintball team and I was always out at the field taking action,
- 1:13:31photos, paintball and stuff like that.
- 1:13:34And it just kind of evolved from there.
- 1:13:35I finished Drexel, got my degree, didn't really know what
- 1:13:40to do with it. It's really like, and you move
- 1:13:43to California and you work for like Pixar or something, you
- 1:13:45know, like there's not a whole lot of stuff that was like in my
- 1:13:47realm around here. Well, like, no.
- 1:13:49If you think about it, there wasn't like a path.
- 1:13:52Yeah, it's pretty. They say now the movies are
- 1:13:55coming to this area again. Yeah.
- 1:13:57You know, like, are they really? In Morristown.
- 1:14:00I don't know. Wherever they're making that
- 1:14:01Netflix, the. Fucking yeah, yeah, facility.
- 1:14:03That might be what I'm talking about.
- 1:14:04We. Got like, you know, M Night
- 1:14:06Shyamalan, he's a local Philly guy, makes all of his movies
- 1:14:10like kind of in like the Philly. Surroundings.
- 1:14:12All that like. The guy who made No, I'm
- 1:14:15thinking about Michael Bay. That was the Transformer movie.
- 1:14:18Little different. I'm like.
- 1:14:20What the fuck? He's a Philly native.
- 1:14:22He knows Reese Marin. What I.
- 1:14:26Mean I don't know where Michael Bay is from, but different
- 1:14:28different. Genre, but no, it's definitely
- 1:14:30not M Night Shyamalan or whatever.
- 1:14:32Yeah, so I was just like, I don't really know what to do.
- 1:14:35I ended up getting like after, you know, like 6 months, I got a
- 1:14:39job at like this startup and that didn't go great.
- 1:14:43It was like super wishy washy, this woman who was kind of just
- 1:14:47like pulling the wool over the eyes of all of these like fresh
- 1:14:49college graduates who didn't know any better.
- 1:14:52Like. That lasted for like 8 months of
- 1:14:55being on and off. Like started off.
- 1:14:56You're like, yeah, I got this full time job.
- 1:14:58And then like two months later, hey, we're not doing well.
- 1:15:00We're taking everybody down to like one day a week and like one
- 1:15:05day, dude, it was. Damn, they dragged it down so
- 1:15:07they didn't lay you off, but they didn't fire you.
- 1:15:10It was so they didn't have to pay out.
- 1:15:11It's so silly, man. They were trying to put together
- 1:15:14this software that would like be for patient education, for like
- 1:15:17medical procedures and stuff. So like basically your doctor
- 1:15:20could come in with an iPad and show you like a 3D animation of
- 1:15:24them, like putting a stent in your heart or whatever, and be
- 1:15:26like, this is what we're going to do.
- 1:15:27What's a funny break? Here's what's wrong with you.
- 1:15:31And it's just like you like your heart failing, Yeah.
- 1:15:34There's a visual aid like. Look like like right here is
- 1:15:37often just gonna this. Is what's gonna happen.
- 1:15:39Here's the aorta. Yeah, it is fucking exploding.
- 1:15:43Your aorta looks like a party balloon right now, but don't
- 1:15:45worry, we're gonna fix it as soon as we finish making this
- 1:15:47soft. Look, we got this cool animation
- 1:15:49for you, yeah? Like this is what your heart's
- 1:15:50gonna look like when it explodes.
- 1:15:52So I guess it was not for that. It was more like this is how
- 1:15:54we're gonna help fix. It yeah, it's like, here's a
- 1:15:58little education on like, and how this is going to go down.
- 1:16:00But it was so unrealistic. I mean, they, they like
- 1:16:05everything was so sketched, like we were running like cracked,
- 1:16:08like student versions of software, like all this stuff
- 1:16:11that was like so bad. And the way it would work would
- 1:16:15be if you wanted a job there, you would take on a month of
- 1:16:18unpaid internship. And then like from there they
- 1:16:22would decide whether like you're worthy or not.
- 1:16:24This place is saving money bro bro bro.
- 1:16:27That is literally the epitome of just somebody who preys on,
- 1:16:31yeah, what James just mentioned, like fresh new grads, because
- 1:16:34that is exactly what I fell into.
- 1:16:36And then not really no, but similarly just different, like a
- 1:16:43different medium. Yeah, but they're still going
- 1:16:46after. You fresh college grads and they
- 1:16:48know that you could overwork the fuck out of a college grad
- 1:16:50thing. Oh.
- 1:16:51Yeah, dude, dude, my, my commute one way was like 60 miles or
- 1:16:55something. Stupid fuck that.
- 1:16:57Stupid. And it was like, for some reason
- 1:16:59we didn't have like, the company didn't have enough money to
- 1:17:01like, pay us really. But when this was like the year
- 1:17:05The Hobbit came out, the first Hobbit, the movie, Yeah.
- 1:17:09What the They took the like all 15 of us to go see The Hobbit in
- 1:17:133D. That's a write off.
- 1:17:15That's a write off. What are we doing here?
- 1:17:17They had to offset something. You.
- 1:17:18Know and like what? Are we doing here?
- 1:17:20I need to drop it down. It tried to be the like, cool
- 1:17:22start up vibe or like, you know, The Office has like an arcade
- 1:17:25game in it and like there's Nerf guns everywhere and all this
- 1:17:28shit. Pay us.
- 1:17:29Yeah, yeah. We don't want the nerf guns.
- 1:17:31You know, like after being there for like 8 months of like I was
- 1:17:37like January 2013 or whatever, like I'm still only coming in
- 1:17:40like 1 day a week or whatever, living at home, you know, trying
- 1:17:43to figure my shit out. By like April or May.
- 1:17:46They were like, hey, good news, we've got like money and we're
- 1:17:48going to bring everybody back full time.
- 1:17:50And it's like cool. And then, like in June, they
- 1:17:53fired me. I'm taking the severance.
- 1:17:58Fire me all you want. The next job that I go to and
- 1:18:00they ask what happened, I'm gonna literally tell them I
- 1:18:03worked at a shit hole. Dude, they made-up.
- 1:18:05They would try to get us to do stuff that physically was not
- 1:18:08possible because we were using cracked software and they
- 1:18:11wouldn't pay for proper funding for anything.
- 1:18:13And it's like you just like kept going back to people and being
- 1:18:17like, I've spent 40 hours trying to turn water into wine here.
- 1:18:19Like so they would just. Sell these animations to like
- 1:18:22doctors. Oh, they didn't.
- 1:18:23Even get they didn't even get that far dude.
- 1:18:25What were they doing? What were y'all doing?
- 1:18:27Dude, I don't. Like we were trying.
- 1:18:30We were trying. Meanwhile, like I remember being
- 1:18:32there late at night one night like me and three other people
- 1:18:35and the boss is still there and she's back in her office and
- 1:18:38like somebody knocks at the door and she goes and answers it and
- 1:18:41it's a drug dealer. OK, I had a feeling that
- 1:18:44something else was going on here.
- 1:18:45So like her and her drug dealer go back in the office and then
- 1:18:48like 20 minutes later we're out there still working.
- 1:18:50It's like 7:00 at night. Drug dealer comes back out and
- 1:18:53leaves. This woman walks out with like 2
- 1:18:55oz. She's just like.
- 1:18:56Yeah. Like, we're like, we've been
- 1:19:01here for 12 hours and you're just like shaking $300 worth of
- 1:19:04drugs in front of us and like, you know.
- 1:19:06Like is she Sharon? Why the fuck is the reason
- 1:19:09they're showing your employees? It's crazy.
- 1:19:11Where's the decorum? So.
- 1:19:12So were you taking photos of cars at this point yet or no?
- 1:19:16No. No, this was like still four
- 1:19:19years, 4 1/2 years before I started taking pictures of cars.
- 1:19:23So the whole time you kind of just, I'm going to assume you
- 1:19:25like were just finding, yeah, like What Car drove by where you
- 1:19:31were just like click, there it is you.
- 1:19:36Know what I mean dude? Like Club, Loose was my first
- 1:19:38introduction to shooting calls. Well, how did you even find?
- 1:19:40Yeah. How the hell did that happen?
- 1:19:42So I after after I got fired from this place because
- 1:19:46apparently I was like argumentative and wouldn't do
- 1:19:48what they said and was combat of it.
- 1:19:50And all it was was me trying to tell them, hey, the shit you're
- 1:19:53trying to do is unrealistic and it's not going to work.
- 1:19:55Like you're just wasting your time.
- 1:19:58Or you can actually put the money into like getting us
- 1:20:00properly funded with like real software and stuff.
- 1:20:03Yeah, that place folded fast. Like first they fired me because
- 1:20:08they got a new 3D intern in, you know, who was going to work for
- 1:20:12a month for free. So they fired me.
- 1:20:15But then they got to get the next person lined up and then
- 1:20:16like. Three months later, they fired
- 1:20:18all the 3D guys like completely. So like this whole medical
- 1:20:22project gone like entirely, you know, because it was me and a
- 1:20:26couple other dudes from my graduating class at Drexel who
- 1:20:28ended up there. And so like we were all out by
- 1:20:32like the middle of 2013. So, and then that place has
- 1:20:36since folded, you know, 12 years ago now.
- 1:20:38That place has hard folded at this point.
- 1:20:41Do you think back on that time as a time that you, I don't
- 1:20:45know, do you think you could have used that time more
- 1:20:49beneficially? Because like, I think back on it
- 1:20:52sometimes. And there's there's there's
- 1:20:53points in my life where I'm like, I could have done
- 1:20:55something else, but really that showed me like something that I
- 1:20:59shouldn't be doing. So I was like, all right, yeah.
- 1:21:02I guess I'll take that as a learning.
- 1:21:03Yeah, I think. A big lesson in life is that
- 1:21:07doing stuff can teach you what you want to do, and it can also
- 1:21:10teach you what you don't want to do.
- 1:21:12And like that was the moment where I decided like, I don't
- 1:21:16want to do 3D anymore. Like unfortunately all through
- 1:21:19college it was like you'd have these professors who they're
- 1:21:22very book smart and they know what they're talking about, but
- 1:21:24they're not really people people.
- 1:21:26So you'd be on your own for everything.
- 1:21:29It's like they whizzed through like a three hour class.
- 1:21:32Like here's how to use Adobe Illustrator.
- 1:21:34And then you're like project's due next week and you're like
- 1:21:38dog like I don't know, you know, so.
- 1:21:41Project. Yeah, like what is happening?
- 1:21:44College taught me to be very self reliant and self
- 1:21:47resourceful just because like if you didn't teach yourself how to
- 1:21:51do this stuff, nobody was going to teach you how to do it.
- 1:21:54That was. Crazy.
- 1:21:55It's like not the point of college.
- 1:21:57Yeah, dude, No, no, no. Like college, you're right.
- 1:22:00Like I, but you're. Supposed to be taught the.
- 1:22:02Takeaways that I got from college were like, how to
- 1:22:06survive. Yeah, Like, that's it.
- 1:22:09Yeah, that was it. It's like how close to this
- 1:22:11deadline can I get to this with doing the minimal amount of
- 1:22:14work? And get through.
- 1:22:16No, that's literally it. That's efficiency, is it not?
- 1:22:21It's like the least amount of time I need to get this task.
- 1:22:25But don't you want to like do this at a?
- 1:22:26Satisfactory rate. That is the, that is the, that
- 1:22:30is the you. Don't want to get it done like
- 1:22:31early. Satisfactory rate.
- 1:22:33That's it. You think I graduated college
- 1:22:36with a four O? Oh dude.
- 1:22:38You look like a four O type of I.
- 1:22:39Got a 3-4 but I had a 299. Dude, I was like so mad that I
- 1:22:44didn't get a three and I was like.
- 1:22:46Motherfucker, I just, I wanted the three I wanted.
- 1:22:49I wanted the little sash guy and I was short.
- 1:22:51Yeah, I was short. You need a 3/5 for that so that
- 1:22:54you could get the cum loud. Wait, what's that?
- 1:22:57That's the cum laude. Yeah, it's like.
- 1:23:00I don't think it's cum loud. Yeah, it's.
- 1:23:02Cum loud. OK.
- 1:23:05Type it in. Type it in.
- 1:23:07Type it in on Google. See, Malcolm definitely got that
- 1:23:09though when he he. He make sure it's safe, search
- 1:23:11what was. Your GPA?
- 1:23:14Look, I think mine was 3.1 or something really well, Why?
- 1:23:22Are you a job that you look smart?
- 1:23:25131 is. Great.
- 1:23:27What are you Carl? And Carl had a What was your
- 1:23:29degree in? Oh, business Admin.
- 1:23:31Oh, now we're comparing the. Grades, I mean mine was in like
- 1:23:33sciences and health stuff. Mine was so easy.
- 1:23:36What do you like? I did not learn anything.
- 1:23:40Yeah, I, I learned a lot, I'm not going to lie.
- 1:23:42So I went into college like. I'm jealous.
- 1:23:44A lot of these kids had programs in high school where they were
- 1:23:47learning Photoshop, Illustrator, like maybe even some animation
- 1:23:51stuff. Like I had nothing like that in
- 1:23:52college or in high school, like nothing.
- 1:23:55So I came in completely unaware. My first time opening Photoshop
- 1:24:00was a cracked version of CS3 that a friend gave to me the
- 1:24:05summer before I started college. So.
- 1:24:07I hit that little generator guy the key Gen. and that shit is
- 1:24:10playing the song. Do you know what I'm talking
- 1:24:12about? Yeah, to crack.
- 1:24:13Yeah, there used to be. To crack the software, allegedly
- 1:24:19Photoshop. I don't know what this shit is.
- 1:24:21You would you would need to type in the code because when you buy
- 1:24:24a software there's like they give you a code in the box.
- 1:24:26Yeah, yeah. Yeah, but there was like a crack
- 1:24:29and I forget which which software it was.
- 1:24:31If it was Photoshop, it was Sony Vegas, whatever, but it would
- 1:24:35like play this tune. It was like, it was like, it was
- 1:24:38really like ominous sounding 64 bit song and then it would like
- 1:24:43play while you're generating the key.
- 1:24:46And this is illegal. Yeah, was, yeah, was.
- 1:24:49I don't. Think people FBI I.
- 1:24:51Don't think people do like CD. There's no real like, it's hard
- 1:24:54to do. It's all online now.
- 1:24:56It's all online. Everything gets.
- 1:24:57Verified through the Internet, so.
- 1:24:58There's no way to even like, get that shit anywhere for free.
- 1:25:01If you have like if you find like ACD copy of, I don't know,
- 1:25:04Photoshop from 10 years ago or something, probably yeah.
- 1:25:07But like everything. So it dude, everything is
- 1:25:11getting monetized. All right.
- 1:25:12Before I get into that though, I want to get back to like how I
- 1:25:16got from being ripped off in a three in a start up to shooting
- 1:25:20cars. Yes, thank you.
- 1:25:22Thank. You for that, Frankie.
- 1:25:25We were about to jump another topic, I.
- 1:25:27Didn't say anything I'm. Just jumping all over the place
- 1:25:30here, it's OK. No, dude, one take a minute.
- 1:25:33I want to take a minute to say how good of a storyteller James
- 1:25:35is, because I'll listen to anything James got to say right
- 1:25:38now. Like.
- 1:25:41Dude, I want to know where the next job is.
- 1:25:43Oh dude, the next all right, we're talking like summer 2013.
- 1:25:48I'm living in this house in West Philly with my girlfriend, her
- 1:25:53parents house. They don't live there, but like
- 1:25:54it was me and her and a bunch of her friends that like we're all
- 1:25:59finishing up their last year of college.
- 1:26:01And I don't really know what I was going to do.
- 1:26:03I was like lost, you know, like a lot of people who leave
- 1:26:06college and like it's their source of community and
- 1:26:09everything. Everybody splits apart and then
- 1:26:11you're lost. You don't know what to do.
- 1:26:13It's like you lost your your friends circle.
- 1:26:16If they all moved away, you lost your support structure.
- 1:26:18Like you're kind of like, damn. I don't, I don't really.
- 1:26:20I went through like a deep depression at the end of my
- 1:26:22senior year like. It was hard.
- 1:26:24This is sending me. This is making my my chest,
- 1:26:27like, kind of hurt. Yeah, dude, dude, that that was
- 1:26:31a real ass feeling. Like, OK, Frankie doesn't know
- 1:26:34because he went to Paramus University.
- 1:26:37Yeah. I went to Community College so
- 1:26:39it. Was a good Community College
- 1:26:41bro. I never went.
- 1:26:42I never like left my friends. Yeah, yeah, as you would say.
- 1:26:46Yeah, you know, I'm still friends with a lot of my college
- 1:26:48friends and my college friends from other colleges that I
- 1:26:51didn't even go to. That's like the feeling though,
- 1:26:53through my chest where it was like when it all was done, we
- 1:26:56all just like, split. Yeah, it was kind of wild.
- 1:26:59Yeah, yeah, yeah. So like during senior year, I
- 1:27:03mean, I worked myself to the bone, I took on way too much
- 1:27:05work. I was doing senior project where
- 1:27:07we were developing an iPad game, like in a 3D adventure iPad game
- 1:27:11from scratch, OK. And that was hard because like
- 1:27:15basically. Or what is the one temple run?
- 1:27:19Sorry. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:27:20Were you into like? Genre was a movie.
- 1:27:22If you were the discoverer of that, you were probably the.
- 1:27:25Yeah, he would not be no that. Was yeah, he wouldn't be here.
- 1:27:28That was hard. And then on top of that, I was
- 1:27:30taking a senior 3D animation class that like, it was
- 1:27:34basically like, you had to hate yourself if you were going to
- 1:27:38take on this much of A workload. And I had all my other senior
- 1:27:41classes too. So it was like really long days,
- 1:27:43really long nights. And like third week of April, I
- 1:27:47like, had a total emotional breakdown.
- 1:27:52Like I remember getting back to my apartment and like my
- 1:27:54roommate wasn't there and like just chilling on the couch and
- 1:27:57all of a sudden like kind of all of the repressed emotion of my
- 1:28:02life. Like you're not, you know,
- 1:28:04there's a point where you kind of become self aware of like
- 1:28:06your emotions and like depression and anxiety and all
- 1:28:09of that. And it's like up to a certain
- 1:28:10point, you're just kind of like operating on autopilot and you
- 1:28:12haven't really like. Fully.
- 1:28:13I'm waiting for that to kick in. No, I know exactly what you're
- 1:28:17talking about. It's.
- 1:28:18Just like you're just living with the, you're living with the
- 1:28:20insanity. It's like you just posting.
- 1:28:23Yeah, yeah. So just you're getting by.
- 1:28:25I just, I guess it like something in the back of my head
- 1:28:28just like snapped and I just like broke and I went into like
- 1:28:31my first panic attack ever and like I had no idea what that was
- 1:28:34like. I was like alone.
- 1:28:36No, no clue. I was just like, holy shit, am I
- 1:28:39dying? Like what's going on here?
- 1:28:41And for like the next week straight uncontrollable anxiety.
- 1:28:45Like they like I went to like the the Drexel like Health
- 1:28:50Center. They gave me some Klonopin to
- 1:28:52like chill me out and make me functional and then like.
- 1:28:56I had your health place gave you.
- 1:28:57That. Yeah, they just gave you
- 1:28:58Klonopin. Yeah, they could do that.
- 1:29:00Yeah, this. Is fun they.
- 1:29:01Gave me fucking amoxicillin when I thought I was fucking dying.
- 1:29:05They were. Like give me some tums, take it
- 1:29:07easy. What the fuck?
- 1:29:08Yeah, so I. Went to Rowan, so I was kind of
- 1:29:11near Philly. So I was I'm trying.
- 1:29:12To I almost went to Rowan. Thank God you didn't, because
- 1:29:15you turned out pretty well. Drexel gave me a better
- 1:29:18scholarship. That was the only yeah, and when
- 1:29:21I went that shit had nothing cool there.
- 1:29:23Like not now, apparently It's pretty good now.
- 1:29:25Oh, everything's pretty good now because we all spent $1,000,000.
- 1:29:28Yeah, just psychologist maintained.
- 1:29:30Life. It's like my tuition here this
- 1:29:33window. I left and then there was like 7
- 1:29:35more bars went up. A fucking urgent care, a fucking
- 1:29:38hospital. Like, oh good.
- 1:29:40So I went through a rough patch, uncontrollable anxiety, like
- 1:29:45barely functional, you know, and that really like, it made me
- 1:29:49self-conscious about like mental health and all of that.
- 1:29:52And then like that summer was absolutely awful.
- 1:29:55I like felt like if you've never experienced real depression, I
- 1:30:01hope you never do because it's like the worst thing in the
- 1:30:03world. Like unfunctional.
- 1:30:05This just came out of nowhere. This is just the stress of
- 1:30:08school, life, all of that. But it kind of did come out of
- 1:30:12nowhere. It was definitely building up
- 1:30:14and I just didn't know it. Also, there's definitely a
- 1:30:16history of it in my family, so it's not surprising.
- 1:30:19Certain stuff, certain family history stuff, it doesn't come
- 1:30:21out until a certain age. So it's just like, well, like,
- 1:30:25this was rough. This was real rough.
- 1:30:26And this is before you had the job, obviously.
- 1:30:28Yeah, yeah, yeah. So by that fall, I was starting
- 1:30:30to feel a little better, getting myself together.
- 1:30:33I weaned myself off of antidepressants by like 2014.
- 1:30:36A good idea? Yeah, they just, they just
- 1:30:38turned me into a robot. Like you don't feel anything,
- 1:30:40you know? Like you can't be happy, you
- 1:30:42can't be sad. You're just kind of like running
- 1:30:44on neutral, you know? So Fast forward, living West
- 1:30:51Philly, girlfriend, girlfriend's friends, all that.
- 1:30:53It's like summer 2013. Don't know what I'm going to do.
- 1:30:57Just like kind of bouncing all over the place.
- 1:30:59By that fall, I found an internship.
- 1:31:02It was unpaid, but it was a cool like kind of step on the way.
- 1:31:05Do you guys know who Steve McCurdy is?
- 1:31:07I. Don't.
- 1:31:08Know you've definitely seen his work.
- 1:31:10Is he a photographer? Yeah, National Geographic level
- 1:31:13photographer I. Probably did see it I.
- 1:31:15Just don't know. Seen this photo called the
- 1:31:17Afghan Girl. It's from the early 90s.
- 1:31:19Oh, I heard of that photo. She's in a.
- 1:31:21Shawl super penetrating eyes. Yeah, that's his work.
- 1:31:24And that's like with the thing like in the.
- 1:31:26Yeah, yeah, that's like one of his most famous photos ever.
- 1:31:31So yeah, this photo the. Eyes.
- 1:31:34Yep. No different photo than I was
- 1:31:35talking about, but also crazy. So he didn't.
- 1:31:40He wasn't based. He's like based in New York, but
- 1:31:43his sister Bonnie ran kind of the administrative office for
- 1:31:47his business out of Exton, PA, which was like right near where
- 1:31:51I grew up. It was an unpaid internship with
- 1:31:54a stipend. But I was like, dude, hell yeah,
- 1:31:56I'm going to take that. So I was there for like, I don't
- 1:32:00know, from like mid November to like late December, I'd say just
- 1:32:06scanning in slides from his life's work, like handling
- 1:32:12prints, handling slides that like probably has like his
- 1:32:16thumbnails or his thumbprints on them, stuff like that.
- 1:32:18You know, like actual ephemera that Steve Mccurry used.
- 1:32:22The basement had a rack that just had all his khaki
- 1:32:26photographer vests on it from like all of his world travels.
- 1:32:31I like went down there one day and I just like brushed my hand
- 1:32:33across and I was like, Oh my God, like I'm touching Steve
- 1:32:35Mccurry's jackets. Like this is absolutely crazy.
- 1:32:38You know, like this guy is like, like hi, you know, he shot on my
- 1:32:43favorite film stock Kodachrome, which was also super inspiring.
- 1:32:48But I worked there for like 6 weeks and one day I'm at Walmart
- 1:32:51with my girlfriend. I'm standing in line and I just
- 1:32:54get an e-mail from Bonnie saying my services are no longer
- 1:32:56needed, which was like between Christmas and New Year's.
- 1:33:00Damn it, I was. Just.
- 1:33:01Like I would have been in Walmart crashing out type shit
- 1:33:05crazy. I was like, Oh my God.
- 1:33:07This sucks. This really?
- 1:33:09Sucks God damn so it. Was rough.
- 1:33:11And then like at this point, you know, I'm like 3 months behind
- 1:33:15on rent. I don't know what I'm going to
- 1:33:16do now. I have nothing going on.
- 1:33:19So like I did the only thing that I could do, I got a job at
- 1:33:22Panera Bread. There was a new Panera Bread
- 1:33:24opening up downtown across from the Convention Center in Philly,
- 1:33:28and so I was only opening crew for the Panera Bread, making
- 1:33:30like 750 an hour or something like that.
- 1:33:34Dude, yeah, 'cause you got to remember this is fucking like
- 1:33:3620. This was 7016, early 2014. 14
- 1:33:41yeah. So yeah, minimum wage is 750.
- 1:33:45It's still in 10 years it. Still is in Pennsylvania.
- 1:33:48It's still like 725I. Think.
- 1:33:49Wait, what? Yeah.
- 1:33:50That, like, hasn't changed. Pennsylvania's run by a bunch of
- 1:33:53like, you know, Republicans that don't wait.
- 1:33:56Any promise? Yeah, yeah. 7/25.
- 1:33:59What's it here? Isn't it 15 something?
- 1:34:02Malcolm, do you know I don't. Know I'm pretty sure in PA it's
- 1:34:04still like 725 or 750. I think we.
- 1:34:08The federal is that. We we looked it up recently, I
- 1:34:11think on another podcast. The federal minimum wage is 7
- 1:34:15something. Yeah, but I would.
- 1:34:17I'd just be shocked. At it, it's actually that.
- 1:34:20Oh, OK, now it's not. No.
- 1:34:22All right, That's a lot better. It's set to increase, thank God.
- 1:34:24All right, 1731. There we go.
- 1:34:26That's much better. Oh look, 2025 it was 14.
- 1:34:31Oh wait, small employer minimum. Oh, there's two different types
- 1:34:34too. Interesting.
- 1:34:36Oh, oh, that's that's. Actually a good.
- 1:34:39Fucking idea to have two two different types.
- 1:34:43As a small business owner, that makes a lot of sense.
- 1:34:46You know, like if you have a big corporation, they should be
- 1:34:48paying their employees more. They should be.
- 1:34:50And a small business owner should be able to pay a little
- 1:34:52bit less. That's actually a really smart
- 1:34:54idea. I don't think we have that in
- 1:34:55New Jersey. But then I hope that that still
- 1:34:58incentivizes people to work for people with small.
- 1:35:01Businesses, well, I mean, it is what it is.
- 1:35:03If they need more money, they got to find a different job.
- 1:35:05But. Small.
- 1:35:06Businesses can't afford to pay crazy amounts of money so.
- 1:35:10Can't. I wish I could afford to hire an
- 1:35:11assistant. I have so many guys that are
- 1:35:13like yo, if you ever need somebody.
- 1:35:14On the I can't wait to get to this section of the story.
- 1:35:16Yeah. Wait, So what happened with
- 1:35:18Bonnie that you've managed to land the like?
- 1:35:21The Panera gig. Yeah, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:35:23Like you had to obviously find your way back.
- 1:35:26Dude, yeah, I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:35:27I don't know what happened with Bonnie.
- 1:35:29I don't know why. She was just like, I'm letting
- 1:35:30you go. Bye.
- 1:35:31I helped. So there was a no.
- 1:35:32What? I mean, like, how'd you find
- 1:35:33your way back to the photography?
- 1:35:36Yeah. Yeah, forever.
- 1:35:38No, no you're not still. There imagine he's like I'm a
- 1:35:40manager. Yeah, I actually I.
- 1:35:42Actually. Own the Panera.
- 1:35:44Yeah, yeah, no, I was still they made.
- 1:35:46Movies about you. The whole time I was like
- 1:35:48freelancing on the side, like weekends, I'd be either second
- 1:35:51shooting weddings or like the end of 2014 was when I, I
- 1:35:55stepped out and I started to like shoot weddings on my own.
- 1:35:58So I had the day job to like give me a consistent income and
- 1:36:02then on the weekends I was working the like weddings and
- 1:36:06stuff like that. And I knew a couple Philly
- 1:36:08photographers, you know, you could make like 400 bucks in an
- 1:36:118 hour day as a second shooter, which was not bad.
- 1:36:14Yeah. Cuz at the end of the day, you
- 1:36:16hand them your files and you go home.
- 1:36:18You never have to see the clients again.
- 1:36:19You never have to edit. Like that's nice.
- 1:36:21So it's like in and out, clean cut.
- 1:36:24So I was doing that and I was still living in this house in
- 1:36:26West Philly that rapidly fell apart.
- 1:36:30A lot of stuff went down. I won't get into it, but it was
- 1:36:34just a lot of drama. I ended up getting kicked out of
- 1:36:37that house for no reason of my own, just like the wrong people
- 1:36:44moved in and they just kind of slowly moved me out of the
- 1:36:49house. And then by the end of 2015, I
- 1:36:55was back. Or no.
- 1:36:57By the end of 2014, I'd moved back in with my parents.
- 1:37:00I was there for a year, early 2015.
- 1:37:03I got a job in a camera shop. So I worked in this camera shop
- 1:37:06from like January until like August.
- 1:37:09Lived at home, saved up my money, got to know a lot of cool
- 1:37:12people in the industry. Like we'd have like Sony reps
- 1:37:15come in and show us the newest thing for Sony, whatever.
- 1:37:17I was like developing people's film.
- 1:37:20I was like scanning film, you know, doing like Photoshop
- 1:37:23correction. People would bring in like their
- 1:37:25faded like photos and I would scan them in and then do the
- 1:37:29colour correction to bring them back to like true colour and
- 1:37:32then print them back out for them, stuff like that.
- 1:37:35So that was really cool. I made some good friends there.
- 1:37:38And that was like also another like eye opening part of the
- 1:37:42journey. It's like kind of a, a teaching
- 1:37:45moment about life because some people would bring in like shoe
- 1:37:49boxes, right? And this shoe box is full of
- 1:37:52photos and you're going through all these photos and you see
- 1:37:57like grandparents get older and older and older and then
- 1:38:00disappear out of the family photos.
- 1:38:02You see pets come and go. You see children grow up.
- 1:38:05You just like you see life like happening right before your
- 1:38:08eyes. You get any?
- 1:38:09You ever get any like dirty ones?
- 1:38:11Sorry, but no. I'm just like.
- 1:38:12My brain is like so immature. I'm just thinking of if you're
- 1:38:15just like looking through a shoe box and then boom.
- 1:38:17Like luckily. Whoa, this.
- 1:38:19Shit was getting so emotional and then Carl just goes dirty
- 1:38:22photos. Dude.
- 1:38:24Because like as as somebody who's developing photos, you
- 1:38:27can't you, that's sure. There might have been something.
- 1:38:30Confidentiality there that ran a titty here and there.
- 1:38:32Yeah, I get it. They.
- 1:38:33Shouldn't leave you know what I mean like somebody probably
- 1:38:36getting some developed for their man's like it never it should
- 1:38:39never leave quickly not but like I gotta ask like you ever see
- 1:38:43like. Luckily not.
- 1:38:44I hear what you're saying. Yeah.
- 1:38:45I hear what you're saying with life.
- 1:38:47Yeah. That's how I feel every single
- 1:38:49day I wake up. Yeah.
- 1:38:50Yeah. OK, I absolutely hate it.
- 1:38:51All right. Yeah, sorry, I just no my my
- 1:38:54puny mine had to go there. It's.
- 1:38:55Hilarious. By like the end of August, me
- 1:39:01and my best friend had found a house, a brownstone in Philly
- 1:39:06and we found a it was a four apartment building in Fairmount,
- 1:39:09like three blocks from Eastern State Penitentiary.
- 1:39:14And Halloween's going to be lit. I've actually never been through
- 1:39:18on Halloween. To this day I still haven't done
- 1:39:20it. I want to do.
- 1:39:21It let's go this year, we'll meet up.
- 1:39:23All right, let's do it. Let's.
- 1:39:24Go. We're all gone.
- 1:39:26Well, hard park out front and everybody's.
- 1:39:28Like damn, I let I let you guys. Carl's definitely.
- 1:39:31Coming. I'll let you guys know.
- 1:39:33Tell me how that go. We're going.
- 1:39:35Look, we're going to like bring. We're going to drag.
- 1:39:37Yeah, you're going we're. Going to go on that extra tour
- 1:39:39that. Last I'll be waiting at like
- 1:39:40Angelo. And take you into like.
- 1:39:42That rooms and stuff. That's exactly what I don't
- 1:39:44like. Like remember, what was the one
- 1:39:46that you brought me to you last? We brought him to one that's.
- 1:39:48Local to us up north. And no one was touching him and
- 1:39:51he was freaking out. Dude, it wasn't the there was
- 1:39:54only one section of that and we're veering off from the topic
- 1:39:57here, but there was one section of that haunted house that I
- 1:40:00didn't like and it's. I don't care that people are
- 1:40:03fucking yelling at me, but when I feel like I don't have
- 1:40:06anywhere to to run then I'm like.
- 1:40:09Dude, we went there with him. Trapped, I'm about to start
- 1:40:13swinging my arms around. So I only knew Carl like, well,
- 1:40:16for like what, a year or two, maybe a year, maybe 2 years,
- 1:40:18maybe a year, I think. So I bring him.
- 1:40:21I was like, he he seemed like he was a little scared, but I was
- 1:40:23like, yeah, he'll be OK. And then we're big Frankie.
- 1:40:26Yeah, we're going. And I'm not, I'm not really like
- 1:40:29next to him or whatever. And then one moment we're going
- 1:40:32through this thing and I'm like, yo, Carl, I'm, I'm behind you.
- 1:40:36And he grabs my arm. He's grabbing it like for dear
- 1:40:39life. And I was like, oh shit.
- 1:40:41I was like, Oh my God, this guy's having a fucking panic
- 1:40:43attack right now. I'm going.
- 1:40:44Through not just a panic, not a panic attack, but it was.
- 1:40:46Fierce it was fear I. Just don't like that.
- 1:40:48Yeah, you know, when, when, when you feel you're like, oh, OK, we
- 1:40:51fucked up. Dude.
- 1:40:52And then there was this one where there was like just so
- 1:40:55many strobing lights and like smoke and bars and mirrors.
- 1:41:01And I was just like that one I didn't like because now I'm like
- 1:41:05just getting a sensory overload of like, and now I'm just either
- 1:41:09going to run through one of these bitches.
- 1:41:11Or your head. On like it, it'll build up and
- 1:41:13then just some sort of retard moment is going to happen where
- 1:41:15I just something's going to happen like I'm just going to
- 1:41:19break something. So I'm just like I don't.
- 1:41:22Know, yeah. Sidebar to the sidebar.
- 1:41:24I actually worked in some haunted houses when I was in
- 1:41:27like middle school. It's.
- 1:41:28Like. The most fun thing you could
- 1:41:30ever. Do.
- 1:41:31Dude, those always. The staff look.
- 1:41:33Like they having so much fun sometimes.
- 1:41:35If everybody's not being a douche, yeah.
- 1:41:37Yeah, I still regret not working at Six Legs, but you had to
- 1:41:39like, live there so. Oh, really?
- 1:41:40Yeah. My best friend's dad would do a
- 1:41:43haunted house. So they're back.
- 1:41:45We're all in the woods, right? So their backyard had a trail
- 1:41:48loop that just like started on one side of the yard and it went
- 1:41:50like big horseshoe through the woods and came back out the
- 1:41:53other side fire. So they would do a haunted house
- 1:41:56every year and we would like post up on the trail and like we
- 1:42:00set up like fake, you know, like gravestones and all this stuff.
- 1:42:03And the, like, climax of this was my friend's dad would be at
- 1:42:08the end with the chainsaw and the coveralls and the Jason mask
- 1:42:13and, like, people would get close and you're just here.
- 1:42:19I love it. And, like, you just, like, run
- 1:42:21out. And you just hear everybody's,
- 1:42:23like, running away screaming. Like, it was great.
- 1:42:25He, like, took the chain off the chainsaw.
- 1:42:27So like, he's not gonna hurt anybody.
- 1:42:28Yeah. But like, it was awesome.
- 1:42:31Might have forgot one night. Thank God.
- 1:42:32Shit, that's the wrong 10 man. Yeah.
- 1:42:36So damn, so you're living there. Yeah, so my best friend and I
- 1:42:39moving together Fairmount Brownstone, late 2015
- 1:42:42brownstone, we had this apartment that was like the back
- 1:42:46half of the first floor of this brownstone and the basement it
- 1:42:48was like 1000 square feet total, so like the.
- 1:42:51Fucking big ass apartment. It was pretty big, yeah.
- 1:42:53And we were paying, like, we were paying like 1200 bucks a
- 1:42:56month for rent for the whole place.
- 1:42:57So like, the price was right. And like, it wasn't, it wasn't
- 1:43:02like it wasn't without faults. The bedrooms and the bathroom
- 1:43:06were in the basement. And so when it rained real
- 1:43:10heavy, sometimes the basement would flood and my bedroom was
- 1:43:14the one that was closer to the half of the basement that
- 1:43:16flooded so. I was sleeping on stilts bro.
- 1:43:20A few times early on living there my room, my carpet all
- 1:43:25turned soggy and like like it was.
- 1:43:28It was a little bit of a pain in the ass but for the price it was
- 1:43:30great and the main root cause of it was on the 3rd floor.
- 1:43:34This family is young family. They had twin toddlers and a
- 1:43:37newborn. And like, the toddlers
- 1:43:40apparently would like, drop toys and stuff in the toilet and then
- 1:43:44like, flush it and all the toys would end up blocking up the
- 1:43:47sewer line. So then, like, the rain backs up
- 1:43:52and it's got nowhere to go and it just fills up the basement.
- 1:43:55And like, the landlord's solution for this was, this is
- 1:43:58such a silly thing, right? Especially like you're living in
- 1:44:001/2 basement apartment. He had a mop and another broom
- 1:44:05handle taped together to make this really long plunger, like
- 1:44:09this, like 10 foot long plunger. And it was raining real hard and
- 1:44:12you saw like water starting back up in the basement.
- 1:44:14You know, go out to the curb, pop off the vent cover for the
- 1:44:19for the sewer and just like plunge the shit out of it.
- 1:44:23So you're like out in the rain on the curb, plunging the shit
- 1:44:27out of the sewer line to make sure that the water would drain
- 1:44:31out. And did it work?
- 1:44:33Yeah, it worked. Sounds real glamorous, right?
- 1:44:35But like, you know, we're just like middle 20 something that.
- 1:44:38Makes sense. The price makes sense, yeah.
- 1:44:40Yeah, trying to get our shit together.
- 1:44:41I lived in that place for five years.
- 1:44:43We had a back patio. I had off street parking.
- 1:44:45It was great for like the price and everything.
- 1:44:47It was awesome. Like, yeah, good luck finding
- 1:44:49anywhere to live in that area for $1200 period right now.
- 1:44:52Yeah, no way, No way. No shot so.
- 1:44:55While I was living there, I was still freelancing and I got
- 1:45:01picked up. I started working at Trader
- 1:45:03Joe's because I was, I just turned 26 and needed health
- 1:45:06insurance. I was like, what am I going to
- 1:45:08do for like health insurance, you know, not on the parents
- 1:45:11deathly afraid of like getting sick or something like that and
- 1:45:14not having health coverage. Because when you have no money
- 1:45:16and no health insurance, like it's a great way to go bankrupt
- 1:45:19real quick. Frankie just staring off into
- 1:45:23the I'm just thinking I have health insurance I.
- 1:45:25Just said no and well, yeah, technically I guess I do, but I
- 1:45:29just didn't. I was like health insurance.
- 1:45:30I'm not going to need that till dude.
- 1:45:31It's like so many people don't have health insurance.
- 1:45:33It's horrible. Yeah, but I was working at
- 1:45:36Trader Joe's and I was usually working like 2nd shift.
- 1:45:38So I would go in usually like 4:00 PM ish, like between 1:00
- 1:45:43and 4:00. And I'd work until like between
- 1:45:45like. 10 So you stopped working at the.
- 1:45:47Oh, Panera. Camera Store.
- 1:45:49Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because the camera store was
- 1:45:50like near where my parents were. So I left there, moved back to
- 1:45:54Philly because that's where all the work was worked at this
- 1:45:57Trader Joe's still was doing photography on the weekends,
- 1:46:00still like second shooting and all of that.
- 1:46:02And it was enough to like, you know, make a living.
- 1:46:06Then like spring 2016, this company DMS me and they're like,
- 1:46:10hey, we found you through Instagram.
- 1:46:11We found your work. We love it.
- 1:46:12And there's this jewelry company in Philly, pretty big jewelry
- 1:46:17company. I'm not gonna not gonna name the
- 1:46:18name, but they're pretty big, pretty competitive with like a
- 1:46:22lot of the other like largest Jewelers like David Ureman,
- 1:46:25stuff like that. And they just saw your
- 1:46:26Instagram. They found me through Instagram,
- 1:46:28yeah, and they needed like it. Was Rolex, dude, I wish it was
- 1:46:33Breitling or whatever. I wish.
- 1:46:35I wish, man. Well, let's just say it was
- 1:46:37whatever it was. Yeah, and they found me because,
- 1:46:39like, when you're a wedding photographer, you end up doing a
- 1:46:41lot of details of like, the bride and stuff like earrings,
- 1:46:44like bracelets. How did you learn how to shoot
- 1:46:49the way you shoot? Your photos are very like, I
- 1:46:52don't want to say unique, but I guess they are unique.
- 1:46:54It's like that's the word I would use.
- 1:46:55Literally just. They're full of emotion type of,
- 1:46:57you know what I mean, like you get.
- 1:46:59It's something, can you bring up his Instagram out 'cause I'm,
- 1:47:02I'm, I'm trying to figure out what I'm talking.
- 1:47:04About the banked photos dude. The bank at night.
- 1:47:08The James Graves photos at night on the bank.
- 1:47:11Yeah. Even the photos that you were.
- 1:47:16I mean, yeah, these photos are good.
- 1:47:17I want to see some non drifting photos.
- 1:47:18Yeah, let's go down. Yeah, like, yeah, these photos
- 1:47:22are just good. Like what?
- 1:47:24I don't know shit about we we do you know Eric Ryan.
- 1:47:28Ryan. I know Malcolm, always correct.
- 1:47:30Is it? Is it really Ryan?
- 1:47:31Maybe I probably what's his Instagram I might know him more
- 1:47:34through. Instagram Eric Ryan.
- 1:47:36Oh, is. It like look at that race, the
- 1:47:37gentleman photo. I'm assuming that's what that
- 1:47:39is. Go back that one.
- 1:47:42What? Oh damn.
- 1:47:43That one did really well. I really wish I saw that photo
- 1:47:46was done. You know what it?
- 1:47:47Is it's the colors. All right, so I'll just do a
- 1:47:50quick like breakdown of why this photo works.
- 1:47:54One, it has dimension, right? We've got foreground here, OK.
- 1:47:58And that kind of leads you in to this section over here with the
- 1:48:01motorcycle. And then your eye kind of goes
- 1:48:03back to this line of cars and then your eye just kind of keeps
- 1:48:06going back to the whole like pier in the background.
- 1:48:10So like I, I think about depth a lot when I shoot.
- 1:48:14That's why a lot of my work has foreground in it, because a
- 1:48:17photo is a 2D object and you have to be able to translate the
- 1:48:21depth. If you don't have any depth, it
- 1:48:25doesn't feel real. So getting depth, having
- 1:48:28foreground, that's a big part of it.
- 1:48:31This also just works because the sun's in the right spot.
- 1:48:34Like this time of day, it's very bright, it's very hot out.
- 1:48:38You kind of want to shoot into the shade.
- 1:48:42Everyone's evenly lit, nobody's got raccoon eyes going on.
- 1:48:45There's no harsh like contrast on the cars or anything like
- 1:48:49that. It works for that.
- 1:48:51It also works just because of, like you said, the colors work,
- 1:48:54you know, and over the overall content, like a bunch of pre
- 1:48:59war, like hot rods on a beach. You have the juxtaposition of
- 1:49:04these older gentlemen here and even older vehicles and then
- 1:49:09this like modern scene in the background.
- 1:49:11So it's kind of timeless in a way you can't really pinpoint
- 1:49:14like when it took place. Yeah, like I don't see.
- 1:49:17It yeah, that could that. Could have been in the 70s.
- 1:49:18This photo. You see the sporty so.
- 1:49:21It all, you know, this is all stuff that's sporty.
- 1:49:23Like at this point in my head it just happens like that.
- 1:49:28I just. Find Can I buy this photo from?
- 1:49:29You. You could, yeah.
- 1:49:30Yeah, I need this. Yeah, OK.
- 1:49:32Yeah. Dude, we were there this year, I
- 1:49:35think, or that year. Me and the club loose media boys
- 1:49:37try to go every year. Yeah, this is one of my favorite
- 1:49:41events ever. Yeah, it's so good.
- 1:49:44It's so. Good if you don't fucking invite
- 1:49:46me this year, I'm. Just not inviting you.
- 1:49:47You just got to come. All right then, I'm going
- 1:49:49myself. Fuck you.
- 1:49:51I'm going to go get a crowd of my own that'll go with me
- 1:49:53that'll say that they going with.
- 1:49:54Me if anybody can get me a media pass so that I can actually get
- 1:49:57into the pits and like get up and close and.
- 1:49:59That was that was without you being in the pits.
- 1:50:02Oh yeah, I see what you're saying.
- 1:50:03Yeah, I tried to get a media pass for like 2022, and it just
- 1:50:07turned into this interview of like, why should we give you a
- 1:50:09media pass? And I'd be like, and then they'd
- 1:50:11be like, why should we give you a media pass?
- 1:50:13And I'm like like like. Dude, just show them that photo
- 1:50:17next time you try and that's going to be it.
- 1:50:18So, you know, I'm hoping I would really love to get a media pass
- 1:50:22and like, get in there and really, really, really, really
- 1:50:24like, yeah, like put nose to the grindstone on it.
- 1:50:29Yeah, I don't know why they wouldn't, I mean.
- 1:50:30Dude these this looks sick. Like even that photo is sick.
- 1:50:34Fucking bird or whatever. Hell yeah, That's flow.
- 1:50:37Yeah. So what do we got there?
- 1:50:40Just some bikes, but I liked this photo because the headlight
- 1:50:44on the scooter is lighting up the bikes.
- 1:50:47So it kind of like leads you in that way and it's just like, I
- 1:50:50didn't set this up or anything. It just, we were just walking
- 1:50:52around at night and it was just like that.
- 1:50:54And you just saw the light like on the bike and you were like,
- 1:50:56there it is. Yeah, pro tip, follow the light,
- 1:50:58like look for good light. That's all you got to do.
- 1:51:02Step number one, look for good light.
- 1:51:05I don't know shit about these kinds of cars, but man, I would
- 1:51:09love something like that. That's.
- 1:51:10Just a good photo. Something just dumped on the
- 1:51:13ground, but you know it's all. It's hitting everything but you.
- 1:51:15We don't give a fuck. Yeah, it's like the truck is so
- 1:51:18out of place, but it also just fits, you know, like colour wise
- 1:51:21it fits my boy Christian. Who eating a pizza out the back
- 1:51:26like that? Christian's a maniac.
- 1:51:31Yeah, dude. That's that yellow fever, dude.
- 1:51:35That's that yellow fever, low riding.
- 1:51:37Look at the. Candy paint hitting.
- 1:51:38That's so cool. Hard.
- 1:51:40Oh my. God, I think.
- 1:51:41It was like embellished all over.
- 1:51:42Yeah, no, look at the. There might have been like some
- 1:51:45ghosting work in the. Yes, there is.
- 1:51:47There is, there is, there is. Oh yeah, what the fuck?
- 1:51:51Yeah, it was just that car was going by and I was just like.
- 1:51:54And then you got to go through all these photos and just pick
- 1:51:56the ones that are going to make it fit your Instagram.
- 1:51:58Yeah. You know, like, that's something
- 1:52:00a lot of people don't think about being a photographer.
- 1:52:03Like if you've ever spent 5 minutes trying to get a photo,
- 1:52:07like, even if it's a photo of like your food, you know?
- 1:52:10Now imagine being a photographer, you have to do all
- 1:52:13those mental calculations like 100 times an hour, right?
- 1:52:18If you're like on a gig, like if you're shooting somewhere, like
- 1:52:21getting paid, you're constantly, your brain is just like
- 1:52:24constantly like analysing like Terminator style where it's like
- 1:52:28like the overlay of just like seeing all the pieces or like in
- 1:52:31the Lego Movie when they can just like see all the bits and
- 1:52:34be like, here's how to build a motorcycle out of the alleyway.
- 1:52:36You know, like your brain is just constantly doing this.
- 1:52:40And that's why like photography is hard because it is mentally
- 1:52:43exhausting. Like after a day of trying to
- 1:52:47take 100 photos an hour that look like this, you're just
- 1:52:49shot. This photo right here.
- 1:52:52What made you leave it at this angle?
- 1:52:56So I like I liked getting the lead in to kind of show where
- 1:53:02the car is going off into the horizon.
- 1:53:05I also like putting the car down.
- 1:53:06That's like a a rule of thirds, like key point, you know, like
- 1:53:09lower left. The car is obviously just come
- 1:53:13off this trailer here and these dudes are like prepping it to
- 1:53:15get it ready. I also like that the car is
- 1:53:17sitting on top of these chevrons and they're yellow and the car
- 1:53:20is green. From this angle, you can see the
- 1:53:22roof of the car. You can see how patina it is.
- 1:53:25It kind of like stands out from all these modern cars that are
- 1:53:28sitting here. It was just an interesting
- 1:53:29scene. The light was right.
- 1:53:30This was our first night at Trog in 2024.
- 1:53:36And this was from like the balcony of our our, our hotel
- 1:53:38room or our motel room where we were staying.
- 1:53:41So these dudes just happened to be staying here too.
- 1:53:44And they just like pulled up, got this car off the trailer.
- 1:53:48They were futzing with it for a long time.
- 1:53:49And I was like, this is a cool photo op and I didn't want to
- 1:53:52like, go up and be super aggressive and like get in their
- 1:53:55faces while they're focusing on trying to get this car.
- 1:53:57Running. Obviously this is better than
- 1:53:59whatever you probably would have got.
- 1:54:01I think like a lot of a lot of car photographers, especially
- 1:54:05starting out, they make the mistake of making the car the
- 1:54:08whole shot like edge to edge the car.
- 1:54:12Is it like front to back bumper? You've got like a 16th of, you
- 1:54:16know, space between them and the edge of the frame.
- 1:54:19And cars tell a story, but they tell a better story when you
- 1:54:23have some context around them. So putting the car in an
- 1:54:28environment where it has context and especially like taking into
- 1:54:31account the leading lines and all of that, it just kind of
- 1:54:35works. Like the line the the house is
- 1:54:38kind of lined up to the roofs of the house is almost a straight
- 1:54:41line on top of the photo, which is interesting.
- 1:54:43It just goes off into, you know, the horizon.
- 1:54:46And I was like, that's cool. It's a leading line.
- 1:54:49And it also like another basic rule, is like look for
- 1:54:52triangles. Like triangles are in
- 1:54:54interesting shape. So we got the top of the road
- 1:54:57there leading down to here, leading it over here, and you've
- 1:54:59just got this nice triangle and it just ends up like your eye
- 1:55:03doesn't know why it works, but it just works.
- 1:55:05One of my favorite parts is the power lines.
- 1:55:07I don't know why I I think the fact that you can even see them
- 1:55:10is is awesome. Yeah, I made sure.
- 1:55:12I made sure you can see the power.
- 1:55:13Lines. Yeah.
- 1:55:14I was going to ask you if you did that.
- 1:55:15I just figured you had a really good camera.
- 1:55:17I don't know how this shit works.
- 1:55:18Yeah, it's, it's a little everything like the iPhone
- 1:55:21cameras now are insane. I mean like you like.
- 1:55:25Dude, I've taken some pretty silly photos with my iPhone
- 1:55:28camera lately and I'm like what the heck.
- 1:55:30They're so good, modern like professional cameras are great,
- 1:55:35but the iPhone cameras have been so integrated with like AI and
- 1:55:40everything for so long. Even stuff like before AI became
- 1:55:44the trendy thing, they were still, you know, there was still
- 1:55:46enhancement happening in the background to make the photos
- 1:55:49better digitally. Like all the blur, all the like
- 1:55:51depth of field and all that. That's all fake.
- 1:55:53Like the. Camera can't actually make
- 1:55:55photos like. The lens doesn't.
- 1:55:57No, you're not doing that. The lens doesn't do that.
- 1:55:59Anything, Yeah, interesting. It's.
- 1:56:01All fake. So I didn't know that.
- 1:56:04The phones can do some amazing stuff, and it's a different kind
- 1:56:07of amazing than a real camera can take.
- 1:56:11But a phone photo? You can't necessarily get the
- 1:56:15detail you need at a. Certain.
- 1:56:17The thing is with the phone versus your camera is I don't
- 1:56:19know how to use your camera. The phone is I.
- 1:56:21Don't know how to use my camera. User front you obviously do.
- 1:56:24Dude, I took AI, took a sick photo of Chris's car and it's
- 1:56:27very, I feel like it's very James Graves esque.
- 1:56:31I'm sending it to Malcolm right now.
- 1:56:32Let's compare. Let's go.
- 1:56:34I'm sending it to Malcolm right now.
- 1:56:37Yeah, Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 1:56:39Let's see it. Hopefully people don't just send
- 1:56:41you random shit after you say that.
- 1:56:43That would be terrifying. Well, definitely after you just
- 1:56:45said that. Yeah, I think so.
- 1:56:48Pandora's Box. Did I send that to Malcolm?
- 1:56:54Yeah, I sent that to Malcolm, dude.
- 1:56:56OK, so I saw Chris's card. So what I again, what I like
- 1:57:00about your photos is like, it takes you there, but like, look,
- 1:57:02this is James. Great.
- 1:57:04Right here, bro. Check it out.
- 1:57:06He's got the foreground. Yeah, he's got the foreground.
- 1:57:08The car's own photo. Dude I did not know my phone can
- 1:57:12do that. The car is framed up well.
- 1:57:13It's like kind of in the middle of the.
- 1:57:15Frame. You don't really like that,
- 1:57:16right? No, it works here.
- 1:57:18So like it's because it's like 1-2 rule of thirds is all about
- 1:57:22just like putting the car on a point where it's going to create
- 1:57:27Accenture. You know, I don't even know if
- 1:57:30I'm using that word right, but. What is Accenture?
- 1:57:32I believe you. Whatever it is, you're right.
- 1:57:34You're right. I'll just say right away, right,
- 1:57:37you've got the one white car in the room, so it sticks out that
- 1:57:40way. It's also the only car that's
- 1:57:42pointing this way, so it sticks out even more.
- 1:57:46It's got a good side profile going on.
- 1:57:47You have these cars in the foreground that are leading into
- 1:57:49it, so your eyes are looking at it that way.
- 1:57:51You've got all these vertical posts in the background that
- 1:57:54make the image look upright, which is good.
- 1:57:57Having straight lines in a photo, that helps a lot.
- 1:58:01Triangle. Once you point out the triangle,
- 1:58:03I'm like, can I Unsee this triangle that James has talked?
- 1:58:07To you never will or the Fibonacci golden ratio spiral.
- 1:58:11I don't know a lot of people like put that over like photos.
- 1:58:14Why did that? Why did that word just trigger
- 1:58:16something in? It's all mad.
- 1:58:18Did you learn about that? I don't know.
- 1:58:20This is all mad. That doesn't sound familiar.
- 1:58:22You're telling me that Fibonacci does not I've.
- 1:58:24Heard that word before but. Right, it means from where
- 1:58:26school. Yeah, probably.
- 1:58:29There you go. What the heck is this so?
- 1:58:32What does this fucking mean? Yeah.
- 1:58:33What is that? I'm just looking at a squiggly
- 1:58:38line with like multiples in it I.
- 1:58:40I don't like. I don't remember what the heck
- 1:58:42this was it. I think it was in math probably.
- 1:58:45Yeah, there's so many insane crossovers between mathematics
- 1:58:48and nature like it. It almost makes nature feel like
- 1:58:52something that's man made. Whoever put that one on the
- 1:58:54pyramid, just shut the fuck. Up.
- 1:58:56Yeah, what the fuck? Is that that's not how that
- 1:59:00works. That's all right.
- 1:59:01How that works? I mean, I, yeah, it's just a
- 1:59:03reach, but yeah, what in like flowers and shit, I guess they
- 1:59:06see it, yeah. Or even, you know, that photo of
- 1:59:11that green car that we just had on, like if you overlaid this
- 1:59:14over that, you'd probably see that this little spiral here is
- 1:59:17right where the green car is or there about starts.
- 1:59:19It's just it just works. I can't explain it.
- 1:59:22Dude, what about that one that. Donald Trump's.
- 1:59:24Hair. They're trying to analyze
- 1:59:26Donnie's fucking hair with the Fibonacci.
- 1:59:29That's. Amazing.
- 1:59:30That's it right there. The golden ratio.
- 1:59:33Golden for sure. Yeah.
- 1:59:34What? They're calling it, dude.
- 1:59:36OK, Do I know what? Do I know what it takes to take
- 1:59:42a good photo? Nope.
- 1:59:44But I'm glad that I don't, because I know that people like
- 1:59:47you, James, do, and that we get to analyze it from like.
- 1:59:53I like analyzing. Yeah.
- 1:59:54Would we? Do we, do we occasionally get a
- 1:59:57good photo like that one? Do we get occasionally get a
- 2:00:00good photo? Yeah, actually you take some
- 2:00:02pretty good photos. Show me.
- 2:00:03Show me your favorite drifting photo you ever took.
- 2:00:06Oh man, I want to see that. We got to go back a little ways.
- 2:00:09All right, that's fine. That's dude.
- 2:00:11I want to see that all. Right, we got to scroll probably
- 2:00:14back to like 2122. Damn, you know it though.
- 2:00:18Just. Keep going, you'll see it.
- 2:00:20You'll know when you see it. It's it's an in car shot.
- 2:00:23Brian app. It's 2.
- 2:00:26That's crazy, he said. You'll know when you see it.
- 2:00:27Two Blood Masters cars. 2. You like that one?
- 2:00:34Oh, that's from that's. An awesome.
- 2:00:37Radwood, Radwood, 2023. Keep going.
- 2:00:42Malcolm likes BMW. Because I was thinking like, as
- 2:00:46we were talking about this, I was like, it's hard to get a
- 2:00:49good drifting photo to honestly, to me, to me, I don't, I don't
- 2:00:52really like them that much. I like them when I could feel
- 2:00:55them. Yeah, sometimes you get 1 and
- 2:00:57you're like, oh, that actually is awesome.
- 2:00:59Oh. That's it right there, Leonardo.
- 2:01:02DiCaprio. Yeah, that's always like I've
- 2:01:06seen other photos like this where it's like an in car one
- 2:01:08that's like everyone's favorite. That's from who was I riding
- 2:01:13with in there? I think this is out of a right
- 2:01:15hand drive car because I'm shooting out the.
- 2:01:17I think that's Nick Delesio's car I was riding.
- 2:01:19Oh nice. But yeah, I think this is it.
- 2:01:23I think this kind of summarizes if you were going to turn
- 2:01:26drifting into a movie poster. I think this is it.
- 2:01:29Now, what makes you? What's your favorite parts of
- 2:01:31this? Partially just the fact that
- 2:01:35it's this moment that you don't really register if you're riding
- 2:01:40in a car. It doesn't really register if
- 2:01:41you're taking footage necessarily.
- 2:01:44Like I think that's the power of photos, is not to capture time,
- 2:01:48but to freeze it. You know, like you freeze a
- 2:01:51moment, you can see it in a light that you didn't
- 2:01:54necessarily see it before, right?
- 2:01:56Because it's just the blink of an eye.
- 2:01:57Yeah, video you. You could basically relive a
- 2:02:00moment. Yeah, photos aren't really.
- 2:02:02Reliving it's, capturing it's freezing it.
- 2:02:05It's giving other people the opportunity to interpret and
- 2:02:08feel something about that moment that, you know, you might not
- 2:02:11necessarily feel like this might, you know, pump somebody
- 2:02:15up and be like, wow, that's cool.
- 2:02:16I want to go drifting. You know, I'll say right away
- 2:02:19the Sky's fake. I I was going to ask you like,
- 2:02:22is this like natural like no. That is a that's a dropped in
- 2:02:25sky part of my digital artistry, but like pretty good just
- 2:02:31overall. I like this photo because it was
- 2:02:34kind of a cool moment. Like riding on the razor's edge,
- 2:02:37you know drift cars can spin out.
- 2:02:39This is hairpin, right? This is coming.
- 2:02:43Through in front of the bleachers.
- 2:02:47No, this is midfield I think. It looks like hairpin to me too,
- 2:02:52but I don't know. Because isn't that the tire wall
- 2:02:54back there, in the back, back there?
- 2:02:57I think that's the tire wall on the run up to first turn though.
- 2:03:00Yeah, yeah, like I'm pretty sure this is coming through midfield
- 2:03:03because we're moving fast. If we were coming off Hairpin,
- 2:03:07we'd be moving a little. Slower.
- 2:03:09I just don't know which way we'd be coming from.
- 2:03:12I don't because they're both right hand turns.
- 2:03:15It's all a blur honestly, like at this point it's.
- 2:03:17Dude, I don't know, but all I'm feeling is like it's like
- 2:03:20pulling me that way, like. Yeah.
- 2:03:24Because it's so like, like directional, like, I feel the
- 2:03:28speed going this way. Yeah.
- 2:03:30And you know. Part of it is that like we as
- 2:03:34like a Western society read from left to right.
- 2:03:37So a lot of photo composition for us makes sense when it's
- 2:03:41left to right kind of leads you in.
- 2:03:44If you go somewhere where they read right to left, it would
- 2:03:47probably be the opposite. So your eye just kind of since
- 2:03:50we've read left to right, your eye just kind of naturally
- 2:03:52starts in the upper left corner of a frame.
- 2:03:54And it's just because you've been reading books your whole
- 2:03:56life or whatever, Reading anything online, it's just so
- 2:03:59weird. Where do you start?
- 2:04:00Actually, on a screen it doesn't matter.
- 2:04:02You start in the top left, so from there you have the cars and
- 2:04:06you move in and you kind of like have the speed of the pavement
- 2:04:10being the last thing you see. And I also like that in the
- 2:04:12foreground you kind of have a tiny little bit of Nick's car,
- 2:04:15and you also have all the smoke coming off of his car.
- 2:04:18So it shows you're in a car too. Yeah, like it's that's.
- 2:04:21The other thing, you're a big guy with foreground.
- 2:04:23Yeah, you see that obviously because almost every photo has
- 2:04:26something that is in the foreground, either blurred or
- 2:04:31you know. Foreground is very important.
- 2:04:33It's like what brings you into the photo so.
- 2:04:35So you're saying if I if you flip this, if you inverted this,
- 2:04:38it would feel different to us? It probably would.
- 2:04:41Yeah, I agree with that. A rule, a trick that I've
- 2:04:45learned along the way is like if you like, let's say I'm shooting
- 2:04:51like a couple, like an engagement shoot or something
- 2:04:54and I want to shoot the couple like laying.
- 2:04:57Let's say they're like laying down in some long grass and you
- 2:04:59want to get that shot from overhead.
- 2:05:01If you like take that shot in post and then flip it the other
- 2:05:04way. It has a whole different vibe to
- 2:05:06it, like. Like flip the camera and face it
- 2:05:09to you. Yeah, like type B and you
- 2:05:13rotate. Yeah, get in the photo with the
- 2:05:16couple. Yeah, No.
- 2:05:18But if you like, if you take Malcolm, you take your photos
- 2:05:23and flip them upside down, they can have a totally different
- 2:05:26vibe, you know? Yeah.
- 2:05:27Just just Malcolm sitting there like this over the couple.
- 2:05:30But it's a picture of it. Like when someone asks you to
- 2:05:32take a photo of them and you just take photos of yourself.
- 2:05:34Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, thank you.
- 2:05:38Yeah. So, you know, there's just a lot
- 2:05:42of consideration and this is just stuff you learn over time
- 2:05:44from like, sucking forever and then like just getting better
- 2:05:49and better and better. And like the thing that I always
- 2:05:50tell people, just keep shooting. Like, you're not going to get
- 2:05:54better if you don't keep shooting.
- 2:05:56And you're not going to get better if you don't look at
- 2:05:57other people's work. Like find photographers that
- 2:06:00inspire you. And really, like, I spend so
- 2:06:04much time looking at other people's work and looking back
- 2:06:08at my own being like, what made this photo actually, like pop
- 2:06:11off on Instagram? Why do I like this photo?
- 2:06:13Like, what's so good about it? And it's like, there's only so
- 2:06:18much that you can do without taking inspiration from other
- 2:06:23people and without, like, kind of turning it into your own.
- 2:06:26Yeah. You got to have a place to
- 2:06:28start. If you just go out and think,
- 2:06:30like, I'm going to be a superstar photographer as soon
- 2:06:33as I buy a fancy camera, it's just not going to happen.
- 2:06:36Takes so many years, so many like times getting screwed over,
- 2:06:42so many times of like dropping the ball.
- 2:06:45You learn from your own mistakes.
- 2:06:46You know, like maybe a client got out to you last week and a
- 2:06:50week has gone by and you haven't gotten back to them.
- 2:06:52You're like, oops, I lost that client because I didn't respond
- 2:06:55fast enough. Or, you know, let's just say
- 2:06:58like you get to a shoot and you forget your memory cards or your
- 2:07:02battery or something like that. Like you're you're not going to
- 2:07:05do that more than once. Because.
- 2:07:07You learn. So how do you get involved with
- 2:07:10club? Loose.
- 2:07:12Let's Fast forward from like 20/15/2016 this jewelry company
- 2:07:15picked. Me up.
- 2:07:16They brought me in as a freelancer, like working one day
- 2:07:19a week. So for the majority of 2016,
- 2:07:23especially the latter half, I was photographing like a wedding
- 2:07:29or something on one of my days off.
- 2:07:33I was working at this jewelry company on the other day off and
- 2:07:38then I was working like 2nd shift at Trader Joe's like five
- 2:07:43days a week. Do so like you were.
- 2:07:45Probably cranking hours I. Worked hustling.
- 2:07:48Yeah, for a solid like four months I had like 3 days off a
- 2:07:51month. That's what it takes if like I
- 2:07:55was so. Yeah, no, I would mentally
- 2:07:59collapse. I was like, so about like
- 2:08:01getting like, my goal was at this point a photography career.
- 2:08:07I was like, I want this. I want to get paid full time to
- 2:08:12use a camera. I'm good at it.
- 2:08:14I love doing it. I don't care what I'm shooting.
- 2:08:17So I like worked like that for four or five months just like
- 2:08:21basically no days off, you know, and I was young, I could do it,
- 2:08:25couldn't do it now probably had just like melt, but.
- 2:08:29Real. Yeah, the jewelry company.
- 2:08:32Frankie's like. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:08:35The jewelry company at the end of the year invited me to their
- 2:08:38holiday party and the the creative director brought me
- 2:08:43into a side room and she slid an offer letter across the table
- 2:08:47and was like, hey, we want you to come on board full time so.
- 2:08:53Yeah, this is going to get yeah. What the fuck?
- 2:08:55So then you had to be like 1 million or nothing.
- 2:08:59Oh my God dude. I probably could have gotten
- 2:09:02more than I asked for, but what I asked for was like more money
- 2:09:06than I'd ever seen in my life. So I just did it.
- 2:09:09I just did it, no questions asked.
- 2:09:10I was like, I don't, I don't like, I don't know anything
- 2:09:13about shooting jewelry. So all of a sudden I went from
- 2:09:15this guy who is freelancing like stocking shelves and shooting
- 2:09:20weddings, to working in a studio for a $50 million a year jewelry
- 2:09:25company. What the fuck?
- 2:09:27That's sad. And like the other, they have
- 2:09:30another photographer that worked there and she like trained me
- 2:09:32up. I was like catching on
- 2:09:34instantly. And she trained me up on like
- 2:09:36how to shoot jewelry in a studio environment, like how to manage
- 2:09:40reflections. That's a big part of it with
- 2:09:42cars. You got to know how to manage
- 2:09:44your reflections. You got to know like what is in
- 2:09:48this scene that I'm going to see in this car?
- 2:09:50You got to know how to work around it.
- 2:09:52Excuse me, especially black cars.
- 2:09:55Black cars are just a mirror. Pro tip.
- 2:09:57If you're going to shoot a black car, find somewhere open.
- 2:10:00You don't want to shoot a black car anywhere where you're going
- 2:10:03to see everything around that black car in all your shots.
- 2:10:06So I started working there and you guys know TL Tera Lutz, Matt
- 2:10:13Petty's girlfriend, she worked there.
- 2:10:16So we worked in different departments, but our department.
- 2:10:19Of Jewelry Place. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:10:20She still works there. Hell yeah, she has.
- 2:10:23Like she's gone from being one of the new product development
- 2:10:30general people to I think she runs new product development
- 2:10:33now. Shout out TL.
- 2:10:34Good job killing it. But she's in new product
- 2:10:39development and I was working in a photo studio.
- 2:10:41So we overlapped a lot because NPD would have to fill us in on
- 2:10:46new collections. They'd tell us like, hey, like
- 2:10:49don't shoot this yet, it's still in development.
- 2:10:50Like this is just a prototype, etcetera, etcetera.
- 2:10:52So she was up in our space A lot and we just kind of like would
- 2:10:57chit chat every once in a while. And then one day I was like down
- 2:11:01there and she was like chit chatting with me and she didn't
- 2:11:06really know I was into cars. And I like brought up cars for
- 2:11:10some reason or whatever. And she was like, oh, you like
- 2:11:12cars? And I was like, yeah.
- 2:11:14And I like this scene will never leave my head.
- 2:11:16This was the moment. These were the words that came
- 2:11:19out of her mouth. She said, I have to show you my
- 2:11:21boyfriend's drift car. And that was it.
- 2:11:25And it was petty. And it was.
- 2:11:26Petty. Yeah.
- 2:11:28Yeah, that couldn't have been any more.
- 2:11:29Perfect Petty. I haven't seen him in a minute,
- 2:11:31probably because I haven't been to club loose in a while, so
- 2:11:34fuck fuck. Damn it, that was like that was
- 2:11:37it. That was like the before club
- 2:11:39loose to the after club loose. And from there on it was it was
- 2:11:44like, that's it. You know, I think Freedom Moves
- 2:11:462017 was like my first event. I would just show up.
- 2:11:50TL was like, yeah, just show up. Like we'll get you in, we'll
- 2:11:53give you a vest, blah, blah, blah.
- 2:11:54I didn't even have like a media pass or anything.
- 2:11:56I would just show up and they would just like provide and I
- 2:11:58was like this is awesome. That is amazing.
- 2:12:00Yeah. And then after a few rounds,
- 2:12:02like they were like, hey, you can start like applying for
- 2:12:04media passes and stuff right now.
- 2:12:06And it just kind of grew from there.
- 2:12:07Like I had no idea what I was doing, you know, like you.
- 2:12:13Just started crazy shit dude. I yeah, like I remember.
- 2:12:17Crazy one. Jay-Z, Oh my God, is the best
- 2:12:19thing ever. Yeah.
- 2:12:20It was just like like like the last 10 years of like teenager
- 2:12:26into like late 20 something where I was like, man, I love
- 2:12:30cars. It was just like boom all of a
- 2:12:33sudden miss finally little. Yeah, then discovery like.
- 2:12:38And it was like, it was like, you know, I'm seeing like E 30s
- 2:12:41with like LS swaps in them and stuff.
- 2:12:43Like that. Oh never seen a swap a car
- 2:12:44probably. Do you remember like what you
- 2:12:49what you what it what that feeling was like?
- 2:12:52Ah, dude. That's probably awesome.
- 2:12:53It was mind. Yeah.
- 2:12:55It's absolutely mind blowing and also ear shattering because I
- 2:12:57had no idea how. Loud.
- 2:12:59Anything was going to be. You know, like what?
- 2:13:01What? Year 27 so ZS existed?
- 2:13:03So straight pipes ZS existed. Dude.
- 2:13:06Like. One of the early cars that
- 2:13:08always stood out to me was Rich as Z, his 350Z.
- 2:13:12My buddy owns that because like. Oh, really?
- 2:13:14Because it had, I don't, I don't remember like what the like
- 2:13:17delivery had. I was kind of like pink, like
- 2:13:19jagged design on it or something like that.
- 2:13:21I don't remember. Like, oh, you know what?
- 2:13:23I don't know if it's that one, if it's the one that.
- 2:13:25Getting it too. Yeah.
- 2:13:26The one he bought or he wanted a raffle was black I think.
- 2:13:31Yeah, I don't remember. It is a black.
- 2:13:34This Z was black but it just had vinyl on it and it wasn't over
- 2:13:37the whole car. It was just like decals on it.
- 2:13:39Maybe. But hey, Brad, if this is your
- 2:13:42car. It always stuck out to me.
- 2:13:44Like before I knew who anybody was, it always stuck out to me
- 2:13:47because he would always lose his back bumper on a lap.
- 2:13:50Like it would always be dragging by the end of the lap.
- 2:13:53Like it never came off completely.
- 2:13:54It was always like one side was still bracketed on.
- 2:13:57So like he'd get back to grit and he was just like every
- 2:14:01single time. And I was like, oh, it's Rich
- 2:14:03Whiteman. Like everybody just knows Rich
- 2:14:05Whiteman, you know, like so it just kind of like went from
- 2:14:08there, man. And I didn't go a whole lot in
- 2:14:10the beginning. I think I went for like an hour
- 2:14:12of freedom moves or something because I had a shoot right
- 2:14:14after or something like that. Then I think I went back for
- 2:14:19either haunted moves, something like that.
- 2:14:21And then I took my girlfriend at the time, now wife for stuffed
- 2:14:27moves and she got put in a drift car and like she got her mind
- 2:14:32blown there. Oh, haunted moves, I think.
- 2:14:35Oh man, I got put in my like like shortly after I started
- 2:14:38going there, I got put in my first drift car and it was Ben
- 2:14:41Sarley's drift taxi. I don't know if you guys know
- 2:14:45who Ben Sarley is. He was like an old school dude
- 2:14:49that used to drift at Club Loose.
- 2:14:50He had this drift taxi. It was like A5 series with I
- 2:14:54think like an M5 swap in it or something.
- 2:14:57Like that. You don't know this, Frankie.
- 2:14:58Come on. Please.
- 2:14:59I thought I was. I was looking at Frankie like
- 2:15:01the whole time. I'm like, no, please, please,
- 2:15:03please. Give me, give us an explanation,
- 2:15:05please. Yeah.
- 2:15:06But I got it, Frankie. I got put in the back passenger
- 2:15:10seat, passenger side seat of that car for night laps.
- 2:15:15This is like a 600 horsepower drift taxi.
- 2:15:17Dude, And if you're in the back seat, do you know how far that
- 2:15:20shit swings around? You're going like.
- 2:15:24This. When the front of the car is
- 2:15:25only doing this. Oh, it's like, you know what I
- 2:15:27mean? It's like so insane.
- 2:15:29I had the time of my life. I was just like.
- 2:15:32Yes, this is so cool. Yo club loose at night is also
- 2:15:36scary as shit. There's.
- 2:15:38No lights. There's.
- 2:15:39No lights back when? Back when there was Friday night
- 2:15:42drift parties, if you have an S13 with the factory pop ups,
- 2:15:47they're not the strongest lights.
- 2:15:50Yeah, and like, dude, I remember just coming into turn 1.
- 2:15:54I have bad astigmatism too, bro. It's all these lines in my eyes
- 2:15:59and I'm like. Might as well be closing your
- 2:16:00eyes. Where the hell is the turn?
- 2:16:02Right here. Yeah, like where's the apex?
- 2:16:05Right up the hill. And then it's also pitch black
- 2:16:08because now you get the light from all the.
- 2:16:10Stairs. That's the worst part.
- 2:16:12And then it's like super, super dark and then you come down the
- 2:16:14hill and then you feel fucking cool as fuck.
- 2:16:19You hit that infield. Everybody's there because it's
- 2:16:21Friday Night Drift, dude. What a time, dude.
- 2:16:24Friday Night Drift was awesome. It was like 100.
- 2:16:27It was. It was like 75 bucks to drive at
- 2:16:32Club Blues. You would get out of work and
- 2:16:34just jet the fuck over right down Route 18.
- 2:16:37Try to leave early. Like just just lie down to
- 2:16:39fucking club Blues. OK, it was so cool in the
- 2:16:42beginning. I mean, it's still really.
- 2:16:43Cool. It's still is awesome.
- 2:16:44That's what I'm saying I. Need.
- 2:16:46To get my way. Over there, I'll never like not
- 2:16:49go back there at least I know like life is, you know, moving a
- 2:16:52lot of people away from club loose, but it'll definitely
- 2:16:56always be a home for me. I can't thank like the entire
- 2:17:01club loose community enough or the naps or anybody else who
- 2:17:05makes this shit happen. You guys like it is a village.
- 2:17:08You're literally part of it. Yeah.
- 2:17:10You're you're like, you're like part of it.
- 2:17:13Yeah, you're a pretty big part of it, yeah.
- 2:17:14Club loose makes man. Like I was talking.
- 2:17:17I was talking to another buddy of mine who shoots photos, too.
- 2:17:19Shout out, Javi. But a buddy of mine named Javi.
- 2:17:22Yeah, I know. You know Javi?
- 2:17:23Yeah, probably. Jeff's cousin or Jeff's nephew?
- 2:17:25Yeah, but I was like, yo, you know James Gravy?
- 2:17:33Oh, James, dude, you should. I totally forgot what he told me
- 2:17:36to ask you. I'm so sorry.
- 2:17:37But he he was just talking about how good of a person one of his
- 2:17:40favorite photographer. I'm like, OK, perfect.
- 2:17:43I can't wait. I can't wait to meet him, dude.
- 2:17:45And now, now here you are. That's you're a part of it.
- 2:17:48Yeah. Like your photos?
- 2:17:50Media? Guys are a big part of it, yeah.
- 2:17:52I'm I'm happy to be a part of it.
- 2:17:54And it's so cool. I got a shout out.
- 2:17:56So this shirt is from a a company, well, company
- 2:17:59organization. I don't know if they're still
- 2:18:00around. I hope they are called Drifting
- 2:18:02for Kittens. Oh yeah, yeah, I got to shout
- 2:18:04them out. One of the like highlights of my
- 2:18:08time in the Drift community is my wife and I.
- 2:18:12We have two cats. We used to have three cats, she
- 2:18:16got. Him just left.
- 2:18:17He fucking. He's the cat guy.
- 2:18:19For the record, the third cat, Coco, he's still alive and well.
- 2:18:22He lives with my parents now because trying to manage 3 cats
- 2:18:26while your wife is going through like the Med school thing and
- 2:18:30all of that, it was just like too much to try and handle.
- 2:18:32So Coco lives with my parents. My dad loves him.
- 2:18:35Coco loves my dad like he's this, this little professor cat.
- 2:18:38Now he's all chubby. He has a bow tie.
- 2:18:40He just like, hangs out with my dad all day sick.
- 2:18:42But my mom's a big cat lady. She's a big animal person.
- 2:18:46She's such. A like, well, she was a horse
- 2:18:48person, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:18:50Yeah, she's always been big into the horses.
- 2:18:52Yeah. No, no, no, not the what the
- 2:18:54fuck to the horse thing. What the fuck?
- 2:18:56Where the hell did that come from?
- 2:18:57He was a horse trainer or something, right?
- 2:19:00So, yeah, I, I posted a thing for about Father's Day on my
- 2:19:03Instagram with all this old footage that my mom gave me from
- 2:19:07I was in the Devon horse show as like a, a toddler, basically
- 2:19:11like 21 months old. My mom loves horses.
- 2:19:14So she put me on this Little Pony and I'm like riding around.
- 2:19:18This is like 1991. I'm like riding around.
- 2:19:20She's like walking me around on this, this horse.
- 2:19:25But anyway, so my mom loves animals and you know, they still
- 2:19:28live in this like borough of South Coatesville that's got a
- 2:19:30lot of like property turnover and a lot of like rental people
- 2:19:33who like dump their pets unfortunately and stuff like
- 2:19:35that. So.
- 2:19:36Fuck. She takes care of like all the
- 2:19:39cats that end up in her yard and gets them like spayed and
- 2:19:41neutered and stuff. She got this pregnant Mama cat
- 2:19:44in the cat had kittens and in 2019 my my girlfriend now wife
- 2:19:52adopted one of the kittens who became Coco and so he's a male
- 2:19:56cat. Male cats can tend to have this
- 2:19:58issue with their their urethra where like they make too many
- 2:20:03crystals in their bladder and it blocks up their urethra and it
- 2:20:05can be a really like serious issue they.
- 2:20:07Can't. Holy crap.
- 2:20:08So Coco started to have these issues like late 2021 and we had
- 2:20:14like no money. Like this was after the
- 2:20:16pandemic. I had like no job.
- 2:20:19I was just starting to like make a name for myself like
- 2:20:22freelancing and all that. My wife's still like going
- 2:20:25through residency and all that. Like we had no money.
- 2:20:28Coco got super sick and I put out a, a GoFundMe because like
- 2:20:34we needed some way to take care of this cat.
- 2:20:38Like we had no money to do it. And the drift community came
- 2:20:42together and I think like in total they like funded like 4
- 2:20:471/2 or 5 grand for us for this cat.
- 2:20:50So like again, thank you drift community, you guys like thank
- 2:20:56you so much. I will forever be in your debt.
- 2:20:59Hell yeah for Coco. Man, Yeah, so Coco's doing
- 2:21:02great. He's alive and well.
- 2:21:03He's he's with his cat grandparents and he's living his
- 2:21:06best life. And that is because of drifting
- 2:21:08for kittens and it's because of Club Loose and it's because of
- 2:21:11everybody. Hell yeah.
- 2:21:14That's insane, man. I.
- 2:21:15Really say that, dude, you don't.
- 2:21:17You don't. You don't usually hear those
- 2:21:18stories. You're the opposite.
- 2:21:20So that's pretty. Good, sometimes the the
- 2:21:22community can really band together and get shit done for
- 2:21:25real. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:21:26So that was really nice. Yeah, it was.
- 2:21:29I'm super thankful for all of it.
- 2:21:30I love Sammy of Drifting for Kittens.
- 2:21:32I've known her since I started drifting.
- 2:21:34Yeah. Yeah, she's always doing.
- 2:21:35She's super solid. Selling the coolest stickers
- 2:21:37too. Yeah.
- 2:21:38Yeah, absolutely. Her.
- 2:21:40Her whole aesthetic to me is absolutely hilarious.
- 2:21:42Yeah. So.
- 2:21:42Like she's awesome. I'm all about it.
- 2:21:44Sweet. Do I have time to tell one more
- 2:21:46hilarious club blue story? Yeah, yeah, absolutely, bro.
- 2:21:49All right, so I think it was like my first summer at Club
- 2:21:54Loose. I still didn't know anybody.
- 2:21:55This was like 20, like summer 2018.
- 2:21:59I had the WRXI, bought the WRX like early 2018, like February,
- 2:22:04and I went to the track for a 2 day event, might have been ECB
- 2:22:09or something like that. And as was before, I was like
- 2:22:12camping out in the pits. So at the end of the day, camped
- 2:22:16out all the way out in the field, like where spectators
- 2:22:19are. But like spectators at this
- 2:22:21point, we're still camping out like way out there, like almost
- 2:22:23back kind of where like the shop is how?
- 2:22:25Yeah, that's crazy shit. And that is Mosquito fucking
- 2:22:29Alley. Dude.
- 2:22:30Oh, the whole place is Mosquito Alley, Yeah.
- 2:22:32But particularly in that that little grassy Knoll where
- 2:22:35there's. Nothing else.
- 2:22:37Yeah. Dude, that is.
- 2:22:39The grassy Knoll, the. Grassy.
- 2:22:40Knoll Yeah. Oh my gosh.
- 2:22:42Just me and JFK. 'S coast dude.
- 2:22:44Nice. So.
- 2:22:47It's like late at night and you know, like after a day of
- 2:22:50drifting and then a night of like drinking with like the few
- 2:22:53people that I did know, I knew like 3 people there, like a
- 2:22:56night of drinking, you know, playing past the Dutchie, all of
- 2:22:58that. I went back to my car and I'm
- 2:23:00like camping out in my car for the night.
- 2:23:03So I get my car all ready to camp out and I got my air
- 2:23:07mattress. Like the WX is awesome because
- 2:23:09if you fold the front seats forward and then push them all
- 2:23:13the way forward, there's enough room in the back to fit a a twin
- 2:23:16air mattress does. It.
- 2:23:17Really. Yeah, I'm 6 foot and I sleep in
- 2:23:20my car comfortably. That I'm not a you know what?
- 2:23:24Now he's getting a super. You're sold.
- 2:23:25You. You sold me on it.
- 2:23:27I need 1 Malcolm. Dude I'm telling you man, best
- 2:23:32car I've ever had. It's so good.
- 2:23:34Dude, Malcolm's getting one for my brother and like, I feel like
- 2:23:38I need one too because everyone's dude, Derek bought a
- 2:23:40fit, You saw that? Derek's bought 3 three cars in
- 2:23:43the last three weeks. They're all at my house.
- 2:23:46But no, the, and while everybody's buying Honda Fits,
- 2:23:49we should be buying, It's got to be dropping other things down
- 2:23:54like that's, that is a feature that people probably don't know.
- 2:23:59Because when I look at those hatches, I would have never
- 2:24:01thought that I'm like, oh, it's it's got to be kind of smaller
- 2:24:04in there because it's a, because it's a sedan car that has a
- 2:24:09hatch version. So you I assumed it's probably
- 2:24:13small. It's real comfy. 6 foot.
- 2:24:17And if you get one of those camp, this is something I
- 2:24:19recently discovered. If you get one of those camp
- 2:24:21pads that's really just made for one person and is like one
- 2:24:24person's width, you can just put the passenger seat forward.
- 2:24:28And also seat on that side so. It's even more like Top Gear.
- 2:24:32And then you have a whole other half of the back to like, put
- 2:24:34all your stuff down. You're a Top Gear challenge, you
- 2:24:37get watcher. I forgot that was one of the
- 2:24:39first pieces of information. I hate moving my driver's seat
- 2:24:43as a manual car driver. I hate it because it never feels
- 2:24:47like it goes. Back to the right spot, but you
- 2:24:49know, touchdown, you're like. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:24:51So. That's so real.
- 2:24:53What are you doing? Yes.
- 2:24:55I mean I'm the type person that doesn't move a seat no matter
- 2:24:58what. Like if I get in it in someone
- 2:24:59else's car I never move. I don't touch it.
- 2:25:01I'll just drive. I'll drive like this.
- 2:25:03Yeah. And they're like, move the seat,
- 2:25:04get comfortable. I'm like, Nah, that's you.
- 2:25:06That's your seat. No, no, that's that's absolutely
- 2:25:09correct. It's so.
- 2:25:09Tricky, though. Yeah.
- 2:25:10So it's like 11:30 at night, maybe midnight.
- 2:25:14I'm winding down. I'm out in the middle of this
- 2:25:16field. There's like other cars around
- 2:25:18me, but like everybody's like going to bed for the night, you
- 2:25:20know all that. I'm sitting in the front
- 2:25:23passenger seat, like probably brushing my teeth or something
- 2:25:26like that. I've got the rear all ready to
- 2:25:28go. I've got the keys sitting in the
- 2:25:31cup holder. No.
- 2:25:33And I get out. I, for whatever reason, I locked
- 2:25:38the door and then stood up out of the car.
- 2:25:42Well, the passenger seat is still open.
- 2:25:44And then I shut the door and the car just goes.
- 2:25:49Boop, I'm. Like.
- 2:25:52So cute. Oh my God, cool.
- 2:25:55And I'm like, fuck, I'm in like T-shirt and gym shorts, no shoes
- 2:26:02on, phones in the car, everything is in the car.
- 2:26:06I'm like. I'm like, I'm going to have to
- 2:26:09schlep a quarter mile to the pits barefoot, find the most
- 2:26:15sober person I can that's still awake, and then I don't know
- 2:26:18what I'm going to do 'cause like, what's the next plan?
- 2:26:21What are they? Going to do like give.
- 2:26:23Me A. Floor to sleep on in the shanty
- 2:26:25or something like what am I going to do?
- 2:26:27I was like I was like so determined for this to not
- 2:26:30happen I was like no, no, no, this is not fucking happening
- 2:26:33right now like no, no way I refuse yes I refuse.
- 2:26:37So I'm like working my little squirrel brain, like, what the
- 2:26:41hell can I do? You know, like and I'm thinking
- 2:26:44like. With bare feet, by the way, and
- 2:26:46for those of you for, for the people who don't understand what
- 2:26:48the pits look like at club barefoot in the and in your in
- 2:26:52the pits where it's like it's coarse gravel really mainly and
- 2:26:58grass, but in the grass, in the grass.
- 2:27:00What sucks is you can't see. What's in the grass?
- 2:27:04No, it's. Like stepping on a Lego in.
- 2:27:05Shankar like yeah, so yeah. And it's late.
- 2:27:09Yeah. And your phone is in the car, so
- 2:27:12that means you're dark. And no light.
- 2:27:14No light. Yeah.
- 2:27:15So I'm like it. Sounds great.
- 2:27:17I'm like, what the hell am I gonna do, dude?
- 2:27:19Sleep on the roof. No, yeah.
- 2:27:20I was like, am I just gonna lay down on the grass here and like,
- 2:27:23collect dew in the morning to roof like the roof?
- 2:27:25Would have been a good idea. That would have been good.
- 2:27:27So I I'm like, oh shit, my windows were down just enough
- 2:27:34that I could get my hands in up to my wrist and I'm like, huh,
- 2:27:39OK, I can get a hand inside the car.
- 2:27:42What do I'm thinking to myself? Maybe I'm like I don't even know
- 2:27:46if my locks work this way but maybe if I can get something in
- 2:27:49there and like leverage the inner like door latch I can like
- 2:27:54get the door to pop open from. The inside yes, yes, yes.
- 2:27:57And I'm like. What the hell am I going to use?
- 2:27:59And I'm like. Windshield wiper.
- 2:28:02Yup. Yup, Yup, Yup, Yup.
- 2:28:05Bro, come on, dude, come on. That was sick.
- 2:28:09You can't make that shit up. Pop the windshield wiper off the
- 2:28:11car and I get it in there up to my wrist and I'm, like trying
- 2:28:16to, like, pry on the, like, inner door latch and, you know,
- 2:28:18it's just like a little flappy guy.
- 2:28:19So you can get lots of leverage on it.
- 2:28:21Yeah, but like, it's not. There's no button for you to
- 2:28:24just go. No, there's no button.
- 2:28:26Well, there was a button maybe on on my driver's.
- 2:28:28Door but you are on the I don't pass the windows side.
- 2:28:32Yeah, I think only my rear windows were down.
- 2:28:35So I'm like fuck. And I'm like trying at this for
- 2:28:37like 3 or 4 minutes. I'm like, I don't know what to
- 2:28:39do, dude. Dude.
- 2:28:40Like obviously, like if the doors are locked, like you can't
- 2:28:42pull the inner door handle and expect it to open.
- 2:28:44I'm like, shit. So I'm like about to accept
- 2:28:47defeat and I'm like, fuck it, one more time, let's pull on the
- 2:28:52outer door handle. And I pull on it and the door
- 2:28:55opens and the alarm goes off and it's like, it's like you could
- 2:29:01probably hear it for four miles. I have hell of horns on the car
- 2:29:04too. And it's so like.
- 2:29:08They're just point blanking everybody else that's within
- 2:29:11like a quarter mile radius of me and I dive for the keys and I
- 2:29:15hit the button and shut it off and I'm like, why did that just
- 2:29:19work? What if you just like, bonked it
- 2:29:22just enough? Just that little lock guy.
- 2:29:23That's what happened, the little butterfly switch while I was
- 2:29:26trying to open the door. I ended up accidentally flicking
- 2:29:29the butterfly switch and unlocking the door without
- 2:29:32knowing. Just dumb luck.
- 2:29:34Lucky guy. So you just went to open it.
- 2:29:36You're like, maybe it'll just be open, Yeah.
- 2:29:38And it was and it was and it was.
- 2:29:40And I was just like, dodge that bullet.
- 2:29:43There was one of my first times showing up to Club Blues.
- 2:29:48It was hot moves. Usually it's in May.
- 2:29:53Is it hot? Yes, it's hot.
- 2:29:55Hot moves. No, no, hot.
- 2:29:57Moves is like a July. June, June, July.
- 2:29:59Nonetheless, it was it was hot moves.
- 2:30:01When it's real. Hot.
- 2:30:02I was in the tech line and while I was getting teched, like I
- 2:30:06looked over to the left and there's somebody in a kiddie
- 2:30:09pool passed off. Fuck out.
- 2:30:11Just like arms or legs. Like the bottom half of your
- 2:30:16legs. So knees and below out of the
- 2:30:17pool. Yeah.
- 2:30:18And your elbows and above, so you by your hands out of the
- 2:30:22pool. So just their torso was in the
- 2:30:24pool. And I was like what the fuck?
- 2:30:27Yeah, hot move. Yep, that's it dude.
- 2:30:30I just told my wife last week I was like, yo, I'm thinking about
- 2:30:33getting us a kiddie pool because.
- 2:30:35Dude, get one of a tractor supply man them like like water
- 2:30:38through things. Oh my God.
- 2:30:39Just kind of sick. Yeah, might might be the movie.
- 2:30:42It's my country persona. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:30:43That'd be that'd be sick. We got some questions, comments,
- 2:30:46concerns. I'm just going to run through
- 2:30:48some of these real quick, all right?
- 2:30:49What do we got? Ricardo, He asked.
- 2:30:51Are you for or against cropping photos?
- 2:30:54Oh dude Ricardo what's up bro? Ricardo's been following me
- 2:30:58forever and I just started following him last week as we
- 2:31:02started jumping it up at the track.
- 2:31:04Ricardo what's up buddy? Cleanest S13 S 14.
- 2:31:09S13180SX still still 80. He has.
- 2:31:13Such. A nice big car.
- 2:31:16I'm not against cropping photos. I think a photo should be
- 2:31:22croppable. I think the more latitude you
- 2:31:26have when you shoot it, the more options you can deliver to a
- 2:31:29potential client. So this is me thinking as
- 2:31:32someone who is shot for brands, shot for companies like worked
- 2:31:36with graphic designers internally, externally, all of
- 2:31:38that. They like to have options.
- 2:31:42So like, you know, even some of my broker clients that I work
- 2:31:45with now, they'll be like, hey, can you like shoot extra wide on
- 2:31:48this one? Because we're thinking about
- 2:31:50putting it in this e-mail. Or maybe it's a horizontal photo
- 2:31:53that you need to crop vertical at some point for like a Stinger
- 2:31:56or something like that. So I think if there's a purpose
- 2:32:01for it or you think you're going to need that crop down the line,
- 2:32:06yeah, shoot wider crop your photo.
- 2:32:09Yeah. Is that like a thing that people
- 2:32:10are like against that? Yeah, I was about to ask that.
- 2:32:13Is that like? There's what's the.
- 2:32:14Equivalent of that for drifting. It's like, it's like.
- 2:32:17Not using a handbrake. No, it's I feel like crop in a
- 2:32:20photo is like it's like putting a sticker for your Defy gauge
- 2:32:26that's fake on the car. That's what crop in a photo is,
- 2:32:30I guess or putting the TE 37. No, that's.
- 2:32:33Pretty bad though. I mean, that's what I think.
- 2:32:35That's why I'm. That's what I was saying, even
- 2:32:37know what the equipment would be.
- 2:32:39But yeah, I think like depending on how much like, you know,
- 2:32:42space you have in your camera, like my camera's 45 megapixels,
- 2:32:45which is like 8000 pixels on the long side, a little more than
- 2:32:49that 8200. So like I can crop a lot and
- 2:32:52retain a lot of detail. I feel like when I read that I'm
- 2:32:54like sounds like not cropping is cool or something.
- 2:32:57No. Or maybe that's what.
- 2:33:00You think it would? Be cool.
- 2:33:01There is like an A like, you know, some photographers will be
- 2:33:06like, oh, like crop in camera and stuff like that.
- 2:33:09And it's like, the reality is that just doesn't always work.
- 2:33:12Yeah. Because like.
- 2:33:14Like I said, like somebody down the line, depending on who
- 2:33:16you're shooting for or what you're shooting for or somebody
- 2:33:18down the line might not be able to use a a certain crop you got
- 2:33:21to give them. I'm going to go with your I feel
- 2:33:24like opinion on this. Yeah, that's equivalent to like
- 2:33:26a angle kit, angle kit and no angle kit type of thing.
- 2:33:33No. OK, maybe.
- 2:33:34Nah, Nah, Nah, yeah. Cause 'cause then like, I don't
- 2:33:37know, 'cause then what I'm thinking about people who don't
- 2:33:39crop are like film. You couldn't.
- 2:33:42You couldn't just be like with film, couldn't you?
- 2:33:46Like film as in video or film as in or.
- 2:33:48Like, like film photos? Yeah.
- 2:33:50Like film photography? Yeah.
- 2:33:52You can analog photos have so much grain even like even like
- 2:33:57lower ASA exposure, you're still going to see the grain in there.
- 2:34:01I mean, like the nice thing about film is it has no limit,
- 2:34:04right? So like you can take like a 35mm
- 2:34:09piece of film stock and put it through a an enlarger and blow
- 2:34:12it up to be like a 20 by 30 print.
- 2:34:15But can you? Can you?
- 2:34:16Can you choose to grab like a section of that?
- 2:34:19If you scan it in digitally, you still could, yeah, yeah, if you
- 2:34:22digitized it, but. Prior, but prior I'm saying like
- 2:34:25the old way, would you have to like cut it?
- 2:34:27No cropping would happen really typically.
- 2:34:30So that's why I'm like, they wanna.
- 2:34:32It's the people who like, just like people who like
- 2:34:35shovelheads, dude. Yeah, it's literally that.
- 2:34:38Nerd nerd shit. You'd be surprised by how much
- 2:34:41older photos were edited. Like you'll see a lot of you'll
- 2:34:43see a lot of dudes who are like do all this before Photoshop and
- 2:34:47they did, they just did it in a dark room.
- 2:34:49That's what dark rooms were for. That's cool.
- 2:34:52To me it's like, what can you do?
- 2:34:54Yeah, look up old school, look up any old film photography
- 2:34:58that's marked up. You find it all over Google the
- 2:35:01amount of editing that goes into it.
- 2:35:04Tons and tons of editing. Damn, that was that sounds nuts.
- 2:35:07They're not like content aware filling shit like they are now
- 2:35:11or using AI or anything like that.
- 2:35:12But yeah, they dodge and burn and potentially you add things
- 2:35:16in or remove things if they could get away with it.
- 2:35:20I could see them adding like UFOs in the sky.
- 2:35:23Yeah, it. Could like.
- 2:35:24Whoa. It's a lot easier to doctor
- 2:35:26stuff back then, you know, like so much.
- 2:35:29Easier way this guy you see that trying to start some shit.
- 2:35:33I'm just saying. The other day, you the other
- 2:35:36day. Remember when we were talking
- 2:35:37about what were we talking about?
- 2:35:41Obama doing something. I don't know.
- 2:35:44Yes, we were. And guess what?
- 2:35:46That pod got taken down. Oh.
- 2:35:49Did I screenshot and send it to you?
- 2:35:51We were talking. About something.
- 2:35:52Yeah, I remember. We were.
- 2:35:53Talking about something and then.
- 2:35:54We were going crazy on. That one, yeah.
- 2:35:56But why did it get deleted? Like, come on.
- 2:36:01No, we said something. Oh I know.
- 2:36:02I got fucking deleted, Malcolm. Was it that one where you showed
- 2:36:06the whole trailer 28 years later?
- 2:36:08Oh yeah, that's why. Oh, that's why I got deleted,
- 2:36:11Yeah. Yeah, yeah, it's.
- 2:36:12A trailer. We're trying to show people
- 2:36:14they're trailer. You should be happy.
- 2:36:15Right, that's what I was like. It was awesome, by the way.
- 2:36:18Yeah. Oh, you did see it.
- 2:36:19How how do you like how that was shot and everything you know I
- 2:36:21love. That Danny Boyle does so much
- 2:36:25cool stuff like ignores rules like you must shoot an AK.
- 2:36:28Like ignores all that stuff. Like the original, you know 28
- 2:36:33Days Later was shot on like such.
- 2:36:36Low budget. Cameras like one of the coolest.
- 2:36:39I, I like took a deep dive into all his production stuff after
- 2:36:42we after we saw 28 years later. And it was like the funniest
- 2:36:47thing that I saw was, you know, they did all the like with
- 2:36:50Killian Murphy, all the when he's like first out of the
- 2:36:52hospital and he's just running through like an empty London.
- 2:36:55They didn't have the budget to shut down the streets and the
- 2:37:00police were like, well, you can't stop people from crossing
- 2:37:03like traffic and stuff, but you can't ask them nicely.
- 2:37:06So Danny Boyle went out at 4:00 AM to film Killian Murphy, like
- 2:37:11running around London. And his like idea was that,
- 2:37:15well, the only people running around at 4:00 AM are like
- 2:37:17dudes, you know? So he brought his like teenage
- 2:37:20daughter out, his like 18 year old daughter and her friends had
- 2:37:24them like stand at either end of like the section of Rd. that
- 2:37:27they were trying to film on. And just kind of like flag down
- 2:37:31the cars and like, you know, put the sweet talk on the guys and
- 2:37:34be like, oh, do you mind? Like, you know, hanging out for
- 2:37:36a minute while my dad films this scene with Gillian Murphy.
- 2:37:39He's a really big star, you know, Like, that was it.
- 2:37:42That was it, like. That's crazy.
- 2:37:44One of the most like disruptive zombie movies ever made and it
- 2:37:50was like shot on a shoestring. I can't believe that they didn't
- 2:37:53pay to show any any. They didn't pay to show any of
- 2:37:56that. They like didn't have the
- 2:37:57budget. You just got to find that.
- 2:37:58Just goes to show you that New York City is unlike any other
- 2:38:01fucking city out there because you could never fucking just
- 2:38:03like, wiggle your way through that.
- 2:38:06No, you know what I mean. Why not?
- 2:38:08Times Square is never empty. I forget what movie it is.
- 2:38:12There's a movie that holds the record for like, the most
- 2:38:16expensive. Yeah, Shot with Tom Cruise.
- 2:38:18We were talking about this, I think.
- 2:38:19It's vanilla Sky maybe? I've never seen actually, I
- 2:38:21think. Vanilla Sky.
- 2:38:22A good movie, but. It's.
- 2:38:24They had to shut down all of Times Square.
- 2:38:26Yeah, unless I'm thinking of the wrong one.
- 2:38:27What was the plot of Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise?
- 2:38:29Never seen it. It's like a.
- 2:38:30Weird thriller movie like some weird.
- 2:38:33Shit I I have that DVDI don't know why I think I unless that
- 2:38:37I'm thinking of the wrong thing but on camera DS.
- 2:38:41Yeah, maybe. In vanilla Sky.
- 2:38:43Yeah, maybe. Yeah, I don't know.
- 2:38:46I think so. If only we have.
- 2:38:47Google. I'm gonna look that up, Malcolm.
- 2:38:49Don't, don't, don't. Don't worry, he's not.
- 2:38:52Don't worry, he's not. It's crazy, all right?
- 2:38:56What else we got, Sky? Ricardo asked.
- 2:38:58Do you feel cameras are improved too quickly, making them
- 2:39:01obsolete after a few years? You know, it's not about the
- 2:39:06camera, it's about the photographer.
- 2:39:08I think with the the onset of good mirrorless cameras, I think
- 2:39:16it's really about what you're shooting for.
- 2:39:19The the cameras these days are so future proof.
- 2:39:21Like I just spent between a new camera and a new laptop.
- 2:39:25I just spent 10 grand on new new kit over the winter.
- 2:39:29That job's paying off. It's all financed.
- 2:39:33So. Pro tip, B&H offers a like
- 2:39:39credit card that you can get like 12 month interest
- 2:39:42refinancing. That's basically a free business
- 2:39:45loan. So I did that for my camera and
- 2:39:48then PayPal Credit six months interest free financing for my
- 2:39:53laptop and it's like I have the I have the money if I needed to
- 2:39:58pay it outright. But this way I can let my money
- 2:40:02continue to accumulate interest and like be there when I need it
- 2:40:05and just pay this kid off over time as I use it.
- 2:40:10I think to a certain degree cameras aren't moving too fast.
- 2:40:16I think the industry as a whole is just moving so fast.
- 2:40:19I mean, like AI is already leaps and bounds better than it was
- 2:40:24last year, better than the year it was before I started messing
- 2:40:28around with the AI thing. When it started to become
- 2:40:30popular in like 2022, I had a mid journey account and like it
- 2:40:36couldn't even make a car, you know?
- 2:40:38And in three years now I think it was 22, maybe 23, whatever.
- 2:40:42It was one of those blurred years.
- 2:40:44Now it's like you can photo render stuff, like stuff that
- 2:40:50you can't even tell if it's real or not.
- 2:40:52And it's like it's come so far so fast.
- 2:40:55And I called this like early on, I was like, we're getting into
- 2:40:59the like decent stills part, just wait until we start having
- 2:41:03AI rendered footage and we're there now, yeah.
- 2:41:06Like, it's scary. Yeah, a little bit.
- 2:41:08You can't tell like, no more people with seven fingers like.
- 2:41:11Yeah, that was, that was for like what, 6 months and then
- 2:41:13that was gone. Yeah, like, like the latest
- 2:41:16version of whatever the Google prompt is that you can literally
- 2:41:18just like type in a prompt and it will generate an entire short
- 2:41:22film that looks like it was made by a million dollar production
- 2:41:27company. And it's like it's it's one of
- 2:41:30the scariest parts of the industry because we're already
- 2:41:33seeing the effects of it in the technology sectors.
- 2:41:37I think like Microsoft just laid off like 9000 people or
- 2:41:40something like that while having record high profits or shares or
- 2:41:45whatever. It's like all the entry level
- 2:41:48positions, like coders that you know would normally do this
- 2:41:51stuff like AI is doing it now and I'm using it like I use
- 2:41:57ChatGPT to help me like code HTML and stuff for my website
- 2:42:00because I don't know how to code HTMLI can read it.
- 2:42:03I can understand it because I did a little bit of it in
- 2:42:05college. But like it's just the way
- 2:42:09things are going. It's, it's like, I think AI is
- 2:42:11basically tripping over itself trying to improve and we're
- 2:42:16going like, we're going far fast, a little too far, a little
- 2:42:20too fast. I think it's like when are like
- 2:42:24soon we're going to get to the point where a company like
- 2:42:26Toyota or Subaru or someone, instead of hiring a production
- 2:42:29crew to go out into the woods for two weeks and film and
- 2:42:32photograph the new wilderness edition of one of their cars or
- 2:42:35whatever, it's just going to be rendered on AI.
- 2:42:38Yeah, that's kind of freaky. You know, I was just like spaced
- 2:42:41out just thinking about the fact that AI really is going to do
- 2:42:46that. Yeah, they're going to have to
- 2:42:47figure out some. Them office?
- 2:42:49No, dude, all of them. Figure out some crazy stuff.
- 2:42:51All of them. Fucking jobs.
- 2:42:53Every single one of them. Fucking jobs that was at my old
- 2:42:55office that I worked at? Gone.
- 2:42:57Yep. What they're going to do it
- 2:43:00because. Dude, it's it would, it would be
- 2:43:01so easy. Those are most the most mundane
- 2:43:04functions ever on a computer. When is a company ever preferred
- 2:43:07people over saving money? Dude, that is crazy.
- 2:43:11Like it's going to happen, you know.
- 2:43:13And so like I'm also as a photographer, like not to get
- 2:43:17too off topic, but I'm trying to stay in a lane where I know I
- 2:43:20have job security. Like I would love to be the guy
- 2:43:22that's shooting commercials for Toyota, but I just don't know
- 2:43:25that by the time I made those connections and getting there,
- 2:43:28like there is still going to be a job.
- 2:43:30But like if you want to like sell your 1978 Ferrari Lamont
- 2:43:35car that there's only three of them in the world.
- 2:43:39AI can't render that. You need to photograph that like
- 2:43:43hey, I can maybe render a a vision of that car, but it's
- 2:43:46not. That.
- 2:43:47Car, you know, like people. There's still going to be
- 2:43:49instances where people need to see the actual version of what
- 2:43:53they're getting. People are still going to need
- 2:43:56portraits, like real portraits. Like in a way, there is like a
- 2:44:01space where on a certain level, photography is becoming more in
- 2:44:05demand because it's real. And I think at some point,
- 2:44:08probably much like all of Gen. Z is bringing back like analog,
- 2:44:13you know, like records and like wired headphones and like 90s
- 2:44:17clothing and all that. Damn, I never left wired
- 2:44:19headphones. Dude, I didn't either.
- 2:44:20Yeah, I still have. But the problem is, is that this
- 2:44:23phone that I got no longer takes that new thing that I got like
- 2:44:28that. The Lightning, the.
- 2:44:29Lightning one, yeah, and now I need to get headphones for this
- 2:44:33that are wired. Yep, it's like a new Yeah, this
- 2:44:35exists. This is a USBC.
- 2:44:37You got USBC uncle. Fuck no, I don't.
- 2:44:39Yeah. What do you what do you have?
- 2:44:41Some old shit bro. You got the.
- 2:44:42You got the lightning. The lightning, yeah.
- 2:44:44Is it a lightning? You show it to James.
- 2:44:46Is it the lightning? Yeah, it's the skinny guy,
- 2:44:48right? Yeah, that's the lightning.
- 2:44:50Thank you dude, the USBC thing's kind of convenient.
- 2:44:54For me, I wish they would not fucking change the charging port
- 2:44:57like every 10 years. Like five years.
- 2:44:58It's not going to happen anymore.
- 2:45:00Yo. It was like.
- 2:45:01I'll I'll remember to you gotta. Remember that?
- 2:45:04Remember that you remember your phones?
- 2:45:06Our phone errors, dude, The every charger was fucking
- 2:45:10different dude, and we had a different charger Razor you.
- 2:45:13Know once you got an iPhone, that was it.
- 2:45:14That was it. Yeah.
- 2:45:16But that that was a that was a new thing.
- 2:45:18Now you're spoiled. Now you're spoiled.
- 2:45:20That's it, Yeah. Unless you had Android, you used
- 2:45:23to be able to use micro USB for all of them.
- 2:45:25So they were kind of. Yeah, they were a little ahead
- 2:45:27of the. Curve a little bit, but nobody
- 2:45:28talks about that. I think it was like an EU ruling
- 2:45:31or something like that that said told Apple.
- 2:45:33Like you have to go USBC or? We're not going to let you sell
- 2:45:37your phones in our country, Yeah.
- 2:45:39You can't do this bullshit anymore.
- 2:45:40Jesus, I'm glad they did. They also did the whole thing
- 2:45:42with the iMessage, right? Oh, make it more compatible
- 2:45:46with. Yeah, I think.
- 2:45:47Yeah, yeah, it still doesn't work right.
- 2:45:49I was about to switch this to a flip phone because I saw a
- 2:45:51TikTok one day. They almost sold me on that
- 2:45:54shit. I want to get a flip phone so
- 2:45:55bad you. Would dude, you could take the
- 2:45:57SIM out of that and put it in a flip phone and it would do
- 2:45:59everything. I don't want to do that.
- 2:46:02I want to get rid of this and not have anything but I want
- 2:46:05Spotify on a flip phone. Yeah, that's it.
- 2:46:07That's the only thing that's on it.
- 2:46:09IPod. IPod.
- 2:46:10Yo, somebody, I know exactly what somebody's getting for
- 2:46:13Christmas, bro. I know exactly what it is.
- 2:46:16You would love this thing. All right, Malcolm, You know
- 2:46:19what I'm talking about. Yeah, dude, he would love it.
- 2:46:23Fuck yeah. All right.
- 2:46:24I got to remember that. The only other thing was Jake
- 2:46:26Parish said. Gravy train James.
- 2:46:28So many memories with him when I first started media.
- 2:46:31Jake Parrish. Good old Jake Parrish shout out.
- 2:46:33Jake Parrish. Yeah, that's right.
- 2:46:35Jake was. Jake was a media guy.
- 2:46:37He was a media guy, Yeah. He was just a little nipper.
- 2:46:39Yeah, dude. Some of some of y'all make it,
- 2:46:42some of y'all don't. It was Whoa, Jake.
- 2:46:44Jake's. Making it dude Jake is awesome.
- 2:46:47Jake is a. Driving Prodigy though, yeah,
- 2:46:50but he's got an Else 1 so now I don't even know what he's doing.
- 2:46:53Now that guy is. Just look at him.
- 2:46:56That guy is. He's not.
- 2:46:57Even happy about it, he's. That guy is in LS1.
- 2:47:01He's like, he's like, yeah, I gotta get the LS1 for you.
- 2:47:03Crumple him up. He's like.
- 2:47:04Yeah, I know you. Crumple him up and envision Jake
- 2:47:07as a motor LS. All the I feel like he's that
- 2:47:12engine you were talking about in that Corolla.
- 2:47:15What is it? Two ZZ or no?
- 2:47:16No, no, no, no, that's not Jake that that motor is highly
- 2:47:19efficient and lean. OK, so never mind.
- 2:47:22That's dude, that's crazy. That's not Jake.
- 2:47:25One of my You gotta love Jake for who Jake is.
- 2:47:27One of my funniest Jake Parish moments was you guys know Justin
- 2:47:31Cottrell right? He had the Turbo Miata at Club
- 2:47:35Loose. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:47:36Yeah, yeah. So, you know, he's all tattered
- 2:47:38up and like one of the events when Jake was still like before
- 2:47:42he could even drink, I think. I don't know.
- 2:47:43Maybe he's like nubile. Maniac.
- 2:47:46Yeah, young Jake he. Like he got like everybody at
- 2:47:49Sneaky Pete's to like, draw all over his body.
- 2:47:52And. He, like, was walking around
- 2:47:56shirtless the next day and like, I took a photo of him.
- 2:47:59And then I also had took a photo of Justin Cottrell with no shirt
- 2:48:03and I put them side by side. I was just like, like father,
- 2:48:06like son, you know, like. 'Cause it was just.
- 2:48:08Are you the reason that was his dad like that was no.
- 2:48:11It was already a thing before then.
- 2:48:13Like they did that themselves. I'm not.
- 2:48:16I wasn't trying to put any like family together like that, but I
- 2:48:19was just like, dude, like this is hilarious.
- 2:48:23Like couldn't have painted a more like Jake Parrish picture.
- 2:48:26We need to get that kid a new hat, I think.
- 2:48:28No, I got him. I think I gave him one.
- 2:48:30Dude for Christmas. I think his girlfriend came in
- 2:48:32here and. Bought 1 I think.
- 2:48:33He's fucking gone through that one already.
- 2:48:36Yeah, he probably did, dude. I don't think he leaves his
- 2:48:38head, dude. Yeah, and when it does, you know
- 2:48:42what I mean? That's.
- 2:48:44Fucking dude, you know? I'm not saying.
- 2:48:46Anything dumb but Jake I'll get most loyal hat wear ever a.
- 2:48:51100%. Everywhere I got.
- 2:48:52This he promoted that hat more than we ever did.
- 2:48:55Seriously, like it doesn't leave his head and I got AI got a
- 2:48:59fucking awesome photo of him. Look at him wearing the hat
- 2:49:02right there. There he is at poker.
- 2:49:05That's your boy. Yeah, that was RSD.
- 2:49:07That hat does not leave his head yet.
- 2:49:09It was RSD. We were talking about before we
- 2:49:11started or earlier we were saying you've only shot at club
- 2:49:15loose so far, right? I've shot at club loose, did 2
- 2:49:19rounds of FDNJ and it's kind of. It's kind of yeah.
- 2:49:24I shot at Thompson once. I went for.
- 2:49:27That's cool for a lock city drift or no.
- 2:49:28It was final bout special stage E 21 I.
- 2:49:31Think that's the one that you judged?
- 2:49:33You need to go to final bout in the Midwest because you need to
- 2:49:36go to that track it. Wouldn't be cool.
- 2:49:37I would love to see a a gravy set.
- 2:49:39From more importantly, he needs to go to the the Toge ones.
- 2:49:43They'd be doing Drift Appalachia.
- 2:49:45Appalachia You. Know that would be crazy to see.
- 2:49:48I've been wanting to go to that. I don't know.
- 2:49:50I don't think it's going to happen for reasons outside of my
- 2:49:53control. It's pretty far as shit.
- 2:49:57I mean, that's not the issue. It's I, I, I don't think the
- 2:50:01people running it would let me in, really.
- 2:50:04It's a long story. It's.
- 2:50:05Not. It's not a story for the
- 2:50:07podcast. All right, that's good.
- 2:50:09I'll tell you guys offline. All right, that's for the
- 2:50:12Patreon. Only you.
- 2:50:12Know no, no, there's not. But is there anything else that
- 2:50:16you wanted to share or or dude, thank you for coming on the
- 2:50:19podcast. Thank you.
- 2:50:19Guys, thank you for driving. It's been amazing.
- 2:50:21It's finally great to meet you like the person behind the lens.
- 2:50:24Oh, and I. Think we'll have to have another
- 2:50:25one because you got a lot of stories.
- 2:50:26Oh. Absolutely, guys, I would love
- 2:50:28to come back, yeah. Dude we need to do like a maybe
- 2:50:32like a club loose one but involve like I don't know what.
- 2:50:35More media people, you mean? Like yeah, that would be cool.
- 2:50:38GABA Ghoul and a couple other people reached out to me to say
- 2:50:41that they wanted to do one with us.
- 2:50:43So I was like, no, let me talk about.
- 2:50:44Maybe we should get a couple media people and do something
- 2:50:47like that. I guess.
- 2:50:48I mean, we like to have, we like have media guys on cuz it gives
- 2:50:50you a different perspective, you know?
- 2:50:52Yeah. No, me and the me and like the
- 2:50:55core media dudes who made-up like most of the, the, I guess
- 2:51:00primary group from like, I don't know, 2018 onward or we've kind
- 2:51:06of like phased out now, but we're all still in a group chat
- 2:51:09together. Where do you all go to Trog
- 2:51:10together every year? Like last year it was like 7 or
- 2:51:138 of us deep that went to Trog. Like people are slowly moving on
- 2:51:18to new stuff. Like just life is happening.
- 2:51:21Yeah. But we try to get together still
- 2:51:24and it would be cool to have some of those guys on.
- 2:51:26Here we'll be at Trog with cars, dude.
- 2:51:28There's so many other there's another guy I know that when I
- 2:51:30went to Rowan with recently that I I, and he's into bikes too,
- 2:51:35goes to Trog the race of gentleman's or whatever, dude.
- 2:51:39I wonder if do you know what Ryan says?
- 2:51:42I feel like I've heard that name, but I don't.
- 2:51:44He would always shoot turn one at club loose, but he was always
- 2:51:46in the bikes and always going to the race.
- 2:51:48The gentleman's before I even knew what that was.
- 2:51:50Yeah, shout out Ryan's ass. But yeah, thanks for coming on
- 2:51:53the podcast. We're going to have another one.
- 2:51:55For sure. Oh, sorry, hit a little burpsky.
- 2:52:00You ever hit a little Burpsky just now?
- 2:52:02I heard it. Yeah, it was fucking smells
- 2:52:04horrible over here. Thank you guys.
- 2:52:08Thank you James and everybody for listening.
- 2:52:11This has been another episode. We got more good ones coming
- 2:52:13this month. Yeah.
- 2:52:14Do we? Yeah, we do.
- 2:52:15Oh, fuck yeah, we got. Who do we have next week?
- 2:52:17Jordan Voorhees? Yep.
- 2:52:19And then after that we have. Am I allowed to say this?
- 2:52:22Let's not. Yeah.
- 2:52:23All right. Well, we have Jordan Voorhees
- 2:52:24next week. I talked to him at Ready Set
- 2:52:26Drift last week. I got to talk to him about bikes
- 2:52:30because I have a bike, you know what I mean?
- 2:52:33And I got to talk about his booth.
- 2:52:34Big biker boy. Oh, so you told him the whole
- 2:52:36thing when you saw his thing? I DM D him that day OK.
- 2:52:39I was like I. Didn't know if he I was like,
- 2:52:41I've been following Jordan for 10 years, really like 8 years or
- 2:52:44something. Like that, I thought you were
- 2:52:45just going to wait for the pod. No, I was just like by.
- 2:52:47The way dude is this, it's like our first DM.
- 2:52:50I think I had Adm to him from like 2014, yeah.
- 2:52:54And then after that it was like, yo.
- 2:52:58But this month looks pretty good.
- 2:53:00Sounds good. Yeah.
- 2:53:02Thank you guys so much for the support so far.
- 2:53:03With the painting thing, where do they find your stuff, James?
- 2:53:07Do you do anything of that? Sort.
- 2:53:08Oh wait, we have that one Instagram.
- 2:53:10Yeah, you can. Follow me on my personal
- 2:53:12Instagram, James Gravy. You can follow Motor Car Media
- 2:53:15Co, which desperately needs more marketing because like I.
- 2:53:18Deserves. Right now I work in a space
- 2:53:21where I don't have any exposure on that account.
- 2:53:24Like I work with all like 2 of my 3 brokers are not on
- 2:53:27Instagram and the third one. This is just how it goes when
- 2:53:32you work for businesses. Like you don't always get tagged
- 2:53:34in the work. You're just kind of the guy
- 2:53:36behind the scenes making it happen.
- 2:53:37So need more exposure. I need more people to hire me.
- 2:53:40I would love to like I haven't really shot any Japanese stuff
- 2:53:44for motor car media Co, but like clean, you know, S chassis, like
- 2:53:50NSXSGTRS, like anything that's cool, interesting, like all of
- 2:53:55it. I'm into it like R35 would love
- 2:53:58to get an R35. I've never worked with an R35.
- 2:54:01If anybody you know out there wants to get together to collab,
- 2:54:04whatever. Yeah, but it's not, it's not
- 2:54:07photo. Oh, it's not like a that.
- 2:54:09Oh, OK. I would also love to come like
- 2:54:10shoot some photos for you guys. Just come whenever I'm back.
- 2:54:13We'll be in touch, I was about to say.
- 2:54:14Do you see? Did you guys talk in here?
- 2:54:16We didn't talk about shit until right now.
- 2:54:19You didn't show him at all. He.
- 2:54:20Saw the shop but we didn't really.
- 2:54:22This shop's a mess right now too because of the.
- 2:54:24This is OK. Perfect.
- 2:54:25I want James to see what a mess looks like in here.
- 2:54:28We'll go for a little. Walk probably looks awesome.
- 2:54:30I mean, just from what I saw, it's like the cleanest drift
- 2:54:33shop, Yeah. What the fuck?
- 2:54:34I would sleep on the floor. Yeah, in there.
- 2:54:37Anyway, I appreciate it and the. Corners.
- 2:54:39Awesome. The corners are swept up.
- 2:54:41I would come here just to look around like it's basically like
- 2:54:44a, a museum almost, you know? Like I think some people do.
- 2:54:47Do some people do that? With my car here it is a museum,
- 2:54:49yeah. It is well thank you guys so
- 2:54:52much for watching. I am now twitching and I have
- 2:54:55ADHD to move so I need to get up.
- 2:54:56See you so good night. Thank you guys always for the
- 2:54:59support. Peace, guys.
- 2:55:00Peace. Thank you dude.
- 2:55:02I got you first. Yeah, why would you?
- 2:55:06Do that right off the rim first. Question.
- 2:55:37All right, another podcast for the books.
- 2:55:40James Gravy. James Gravy on that gravy train.
- 2:55:44Gravy train going off the rails on the gravy train.
- 2:55:47He's a He's a good storyteller, though.
- 2:55:50You know, gravy train, they called, they called that when
- 2:55:52you got a lot of easy work at the shop.
- 2:55:54Gravy train, You're on the gravy.
- 2:55:55Train Everything's gravy too easy.
- 2:55:58Yeah, he's on the gravy train. Remember when Brian told us that
- 2:56:00story when he worked at the dealership?
- 2:56:02Yeah, he made a gravy. Train made 150 hours in a week?
- 2:56:05Yeah, that's a gravy train trying to.
- 2:56:07Figure out how to do that here. Yeah, good luck.
- 2:56:09All right. So anyway, great episode, loved
- 2:56:12it. Guys, if you think we should
- 2:56:14have more media people on, let us know and send us some ideas
- 2:56:17because it's definitely a different perspective.
- 2:56:20And on the drifting community, I would say, yeah, you know.
- 2:56:24You get the the people who love drifting for the visual reasons
- 2:56:30rather than the. Yeah, driving experience totally
- 2:56:34different. And I asked him, I was like, oh,
- 2:56:35you, you drift before it started.
- 2:56:37I said you drift. He's like, Oh, no, don't know if
- 2:56:40I really want to get into that. I was like, oh, all right,
- 2:56:42that's fine, that's fine. It sounds like you're smart.
- 2:56:45So yeah, I mean, he he's got the E36, I think E36, right?
- 2:56:49Yeah, something like that might might be thinking about doing
- 2:56:52that, but it's just, I don't know.
- 2:56:54Drifting is expensive. So, you know, some people, some
- 2:56:57people just don't want to get into it.
- 2:56:59And they not to mention he sees everyone's everyone drifting at
- 2:57:02club loose and he sees how much of A hassle it is for a lot of
- 2:57:05them. Probably so.
- 2:57:07Love, sweat and tears. But I will say those are some of
- 2:57:10the best photos. Yeah, he's he makes amazing
- 2:57:15compositions, if you will. Yeah.
- 2:57:17Is that what it is? I guess that's the.
- 2:57:18He's really good at. I was waiting for him to tell me
- 2:57:21that he had some special button he presses on his camera and it
- 2:57:23just turns it into that cuz like dude I literally was like
- 2:57:26looking at some of those photos. I was like why does his photo
- 2:57:29look like that and no one else's photos look like that?
- 2:57:32Yeah, it's a lot in the post. Do they?
- 2:57:35I think the post editing is what I kind of was.
- 2:57:37Yeah, but like you need to be artistic just to edit.
- 2:57:42Well, the yeah, the layout of the photo, obviously.
- 2:57:45Obviously he has a thing where he likes the foreground stuff.
- 2:57:48And yeah, like the planning starts as soon as you look
- 2:57:51through the, what is that called?
- 2:57:53The lens, the aperture, this the viewfinder.
- 2:57:59Yeah. Yeah definitely cool.
- 2:58:02Man. I wish we could have talked
- 2:58:03about his photos more honestly, but this outro is.
- 2:58:07Way too many. Yeah, I know I said this outro
- 2:58:09is getting crazy. We probably cut it.
- 2:58:10Yeah. All right, anyway, this is
- 2:58:12running into a podcast. I hope you guys like the
- 2:58:15secondary podcast at the end of each episode.
- 2:58:18Guys, we have a raffle going on this month, just like every
- 2:58:21month, because you know what we do here?
- 2:58:22We give shit away for free. Yeah, and they just keep getting
- 2:58:24bigger and better every month. Bigger.
- 2:58:26Better fucking. I just I don't even know
- 2:58:30everything is just I wish I could enter the giveaway
- 2:58:33sometimes. Let's just put it that way, Like
- 2:58:36we just gave stage wheels away to to some some kid.
- 2:58:38He he answered the phone. He said, Oh well, how much?
- 2:58:41Oh, what's the discount prep? No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 2:58:43It's free. It's free man.
- 2:58:45You got you won them for free. He's like, I didn't even know I
- 2:58:47was entered in this. I just bought 2 bolts.
- 2:58:49I was like, look RA, it doesn't matter what you bought.
- 2:58:52Do you see? His dad commented on the
- 2:58:53Instagram post. No, I didn't see him.
- 2:58:55He was like, thank you guys so much.
- 2:58:57Like he was so for real happy when I got home.
- 2:58:59Like he would jump in for joy. Yeah.
- 2:59:02Class act guys. That's what we are here at
- 2:59:04Faction Motor Sports. We're just a class act.
- 2:59:06Yeah, we honestly wear a suit and tie every day to work just
- 2:59:10to keep it professional. Yeah, I definitely don't fucking
- 2:59:12do that, but but we'll keep giving shit away for free if it
- 2:59:15means you guys order with us. So slight bribery.
- 2:59:19Well, it is a marketing scheme. I don't want to lie to anyone
- 2:59:23here, but no, guys, it's fun. This is fun.
- 2:59:29That was fun calling that guy up.
- 2:59:30Yeah, it's always fun every month.
- 2:59:32Yeah, when you get. But every, every time they
- 2:59:34answer the phone, they're like, yeah, OK.
- 2:59:37They have no idea they were even entered to win anything.
- 2:59:40And then once we e-mail them after, they're like, oh God,
- 2:59:42thank you guys so much. I'm like, sorry I didn't.
- 2:59:44Once they realize it's not a scam, they're like, oh.
- 2:59:46Shit. And after I say this phone
- 2:59:48call's being recorded, they're probably like, fuck what?
- 2:59:50Did they do? Yeah, that's not good either.
- 2:59:52But this month we're giving away Origin Labo front and rear over
- 2:59:56Fender set. Not just the fronts, not just
- 3:00:00the rears. You're completing the whole car.
- 3:00:03All four corners in one. Shot done just like that with a
- 3:00:08snap of the fingers and a click of the enter button.
- 3:00:11When you, when you spend $5 on the website, boom, your car's
- 3:00:14done a little bit of paint here and there and and you're good to
- 3:00:17go. So we just got a bunch of origin
- 3:00:21Labo parts in stock as well. So that means that when you do
- 3:00:24win, you, you guys got the pick of the litter because there's
- 3:00:28what, 170 pairs of fenders back there, 150 pairs of penders pair
- 3:00:32pairs of fenders back there, I think.
- 3:00:34Yeah, we got a lot of guys. Yeah.
- 3:00:37So no, there won't. There most likely won't be any
- 3:00:39waiting around for fenders so. Yeah, unless all of it sells out
- 3:00:43this month, which would be crazy.
- 3:00:45Which would be great. I really honestly if y'all could
- 3:00:48make that happen, so be it. So be it.
- 3:00:51That would be great. But yeah, that being said, we
- 3:00:54have a lot of origin label parts in stock.
- 3:00:55So if you guys are interested in any of that and you're, you're
- 3:00:58trying to see if we have it in stock, well, guess what we do
- 3:01:02don't even ask because we have it in stock unless it's the GT
- 3:01:06wing or an Eagle wing or, or an FRS hood or, but most I would
- 3:01:12say, I would say we have like 75% of everything in stock.
- 3:01:16Yeah, every all the popular stuff, yeah.
- 3:01:18So check out our website, check out our Instagram.

- 3:01:44The best merch. The best, The softest.
- 3:01:46We try to keep our shirts nice and thin so that they're easy to
- 3:01:49wear in the summer when you're working on your car, when you're
- 3:01:51sweating in the car. It's not like a.
- 3:01:53It's not like a piece of canvas sticking to your body.
- 3:01:56It's not like a gilding shirt, let's put it that way.
- 3:01:59Yeah. I fucking hate those shirts.
- 3:02:01You like those shirts? No, no, I mean I hate different
- 3:02:04types of shirts. I don't know.
- 3:02:05Yeah, you're right. I just never, never buy anything
- 3:02:07Gilden. Yeah, but guys, order on the
- 3:02:11website, we got a lot of stuff available, shop guys.
- 3:02:14Shop is busy, shop is real. The.
- 3:02:15Shop is busy. The shop is hot and heavy right
- 3:02:17now. It's hot and get your cars in
- 3:02:20here. Guys, if you feel bad for Jesus
- 3:02:22or Chris, get them a cooler or something.
- 3:02:24I need some other some fans. Yeah, send them.
- 3:02:27Something Uber them like a cooling towel or?
- 3:02:30Something Uber them a cooling towel or donate us to one of
- 3:02:34those big ass things that. Oh the big ass AC units.
- 3:02:38Yeah, yeah, they're about what? 5. $5000 yeah, I'm sure.
- 3:02:42Yeah, we saw the Massima that one year.
- 3:02:43Yep, didn't buy them. Yeah, we looked at them and say,
- 3:02:45Oh yeah, we'll let you. Dude, if we had one of those in
- 3:02:47the shop, that would be nice. That would be nice.
- 3:02:51But you probably got to stand in front of it to really feel.
- 3:02:54We got to sell a lot of Origin Arrow to make that happen.
- 3:02:57That's all I'm going to say. Yeah, every purchase helps us
- 3:03:00cool down the shop. Every purchase, every purchase
- 3:03:03helps. For every $5 spent, that's it.
- 3:03:05Just $5. You spend $5, boom, you got a
- 3:03:09body kit, you got you got front and rear over fenders.
- 3:03:12You could buy a product for one of our sponsors, Chase Bays
- 3:03:15Limitless Auto Fab. Come on guys, it's that easy.
- 3:03:19Don't forget about our other sponsor to.
- 3:03:21East Coast Drift School. East Coast Drift School going
- 3:03:23crazy right now with the drifting.
- 3:03:25I mean, it's, it's about to be, they're about to release their
- 3:03:27August schedule, I think. So, yeah, get ready for that.
- 3:03:30If you're in in New Jersey or local to this area, that's
- 3:03:35that's the best way to get your foot in the door with drifting.
- 3:03:37Yeah, before you win these fenders, go practice a little so
- 3:03:40you don't bust up some new friend fenders.
- 3:03:42Yeah, but if you got busted, offenders come by more we got.
- 3:03:45There's too many fenders here, Malcolm.
- 3:03:47Yeah, I'm drowning. Help.
- 3:03:50Help. All right, guys.
- 3:03:52We'll see you on the next one. See you.
