- 0:05Speaker 1: It's always a big week in the Coulson house and
- 0:08Speaker 1: this week things are the same as always. There's stacks
- 0:11Speaker 1: going on. We can't wait to tell you about lift
- 0:13Speaker 1: the load, walking 50 kilometers, a daughter leaving home, Kylie
- 0:18Speaker 1: going on holidays and not taking me because there was
- 0:21Speaker 1: too much work to be done and a whole lot more.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It's our I'll do better tomorrow episode of the happy
- 0:26Speaker 1: families podcast with lessons for life and family coming up
- 0:30Speaker 1: right after this. Hello, welcome to the Happy Families podcast. Friday,
- 0:37Speaker 1: the 9th of October, it's our I'll Do Better Tomorrow edition.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And we are Justin and Kylie Coulson. We're the parents
- 0:43Speaker 1: of six kids, although our household is rapidly shrinking. More
- 0:47Speaker 1: on that shortly. Every Friday on the pod, we, what
- 0:50Speaker 1: do we do, Kylie? We pull the week that we've
- 0:52Speaker 1: just been through apart and look for life lessons, how
- 0:54Speaker 1: we can make family life better. And we kind of
- 0:57Speaker 1: just get involved in show and tell.
- 0:59Speaker 2: It's not show and tell.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I hate the idea.
- 1:03Speaker 2: We can't show you anything, number one.
- 1:05Speaker 1: We're behind the times. We're not doing video.
- 1:07Speaker 2: But one of the things that I absolutely love about
- 1:10Speaker 2: the relationship that you and I have built is there
- 1:13Speaker 2: is always an opportunity for us to look at what's
- 1:16Speaker 2: going well in our lives and what's not and kind
- 1:18Speaker 2: of change course if we need to.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I did a webinar the other night. And in that webinar,
- 1:24Speaker 1: I was telling a story about how we're supposed to
- 1:26Speaker 1: get it all right. And then I disclosed that one
- 1:30Speaker 1: of our kids annoyed me about a month ago and
- 1:34Speaker 1: we were supposed to be out the door and she
- 1:35Speaker 1: knew we were supposed to be out the door and
- 1:37Speaker 1: I was calling her because I didn't know where she
- 1:38Speaker 1: was in which room of the house or whether she
- 1:40Speaker 1: was in the car and I was calling and calling
- 1:41Speaker 1: and calling. I was teaching the principal that you really
- 1:43Speaker 1: want to make sure you've got your child's attention before
- 1:45Speaker 1: you start speaking. And of course I was doing exactly
- 1:48Speaker 1: the opposite and becoming irate because she wasn't answering me
- 1:51Speaker 1: and it's just currently the stage of life that she's
- 1:55Speaker 1: in that when we try to talk to her she
- 1:56Speaker 1: doesn't respond. She waits until she feels like responding. And
- 2:01Speaker 1: one of the comments from somebody in that webinar was,
- 2:04Speaker 1: I just love hearing that the parenting expert is dealing
- 2:06Speaker 1: with the same stuff that we're dealing with. But it's humanizing.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Okay, so this is show and tell.
- 2:12Speaker 1: And yes, we are dealing with everything you're dealing with.
- 2:14Speaker 1: That's why we're doing this, right? Because we're right in
- 2:17Speaker 1: the thick of it. Oh my goodness. Anyway, there are
- 2:19Speaker 1: three things we're talking about today. Kylie, you've got a
- 2:22Speaker 1: big story that you're going to discuss in just a moment.
- 2:23Speaker 1: But there are two things that I'm going to touch on.
- 2:26Speaker 1: One of them is just an important news item. And
- 2:29Speaker 1: the second of them is my I'll do better tomorrow.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So first of all, the news item, feel free to
- 2:34Speaker 1: chime in where you need to, Kylie. I'm raising money.
- 2:37Speaker 1: trying to raise $ 50, 000, which is no small feat, especially
- 2:41Speaker 1: in the current economic climate.
- 2:42Speaker 2: That's a lot of money.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I'm walking 50 kilometers to raise $ 50, 000. It's 50K for 50K.
- 2:47Speaker 1: That's what I'm calling it. And we're going to link
- 2:48Speaker 1: to this in the show notes. It's lift the load
- 2:51Speaker 1: for top blokes. I've raised almost $ 20, 000, which has blown
- 2:57Speaker 1: me away already. I'm so grateful. So many people have
- 3:00Speaker 1: been remarkably generous. Some people are donating 20 bucks, right?
- 3:03Speaker 1: I need a thousand people to chuck in 50, but
- 3:05Speaker 1: some people are only putting in 20 or 25 because
- 3:07Speaker 1: that's what they've got. And to me, that donation is
- 3:10Speaker 1: just as remarkable and just as wonderful and gives me
- 3:13Speaker 1: chills as much as somebody who's chipped in a thousand dollars.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And there's been a couple of people who've done that
- 3:17Speaker 1: as well. But I've obviously got to get another $ 30, 000,
- 3:20Speaker 1: which is another 600 people. So if you're listening right
- 3:24Speaker 1: now and you'd love to help, here's why I'm doing it.
- 3:27Speaker 1: And I don't even want to talk about this But
- 3:29Speaker 1: I'm going to anyway. This past week, there was a
- 3:33Speaker 1: newspaper article that broke my heart in the Courier-Mail. Two boys,
- 3:38Speaker 1: a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old from the Gold Coast have
- 3:40Speaker 1: taken their lives. It absolutely tears me apart. Kaya Kennedy,
- 3:45Speaker 1: 12 years old. Trayvon Bradshaw, 13 years old. They're not
- 3:49Speaker 1: here anymore because so many of our boys are just struggling.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And then you've got stories like Boy, well, these are
- 3:58Speaker 1: men now. Men who, they're not struggling. They're just getting
- 4:02Speaker 1: it so wrong. The atrocious behavior of the Cornell 7,
- 4:06Speaker 1: I think they're now being called, the sexual assault case
- 4:10Speaker 1: that's happening in the United States that is just, I
- 4:14Speaker 1: can't even comprehend the reality that something like this would happen.
- 4:19Speaker 1: And if you haven't seen it, I'm not going to
- 4:20Speaker 1: talk about it on the podcast because it's just so disgusting.
- 4:23Speaker 1: I don't even want to put it in people's minds.
- 4:25Speaker 1: And then we've got the allegations of, Sam Wood. Just yesterday,
- 4:30Speaker 1: he was in the Maroochydore District Court and saying, well, actually, no,
- 4:35Speaker 1: it didn't happen. He's arguing against the allegations. But he's
- 4:39Speaker 1: in court now on allegations of domestic assault. And I
- 4:44Speaker 1: look at this and I just think there has never
- 4:46Speaker 1: been a time in my life where I can recall
- 4:49Speaker 1: thinking about how badly boys and men are doing. And
- 4:55Speaker 1: they need help. And somebody told me that they were
- 4:58Speaker 1: going to share my lift the load challenge on their
- 5:01Speaker 1: Facebook page to encourage people to donate. But because of
- 5:03Speaker 1: all the horrible stuff that boys are doing, they just
- 5:06Speaker 1: don't think it would be right. It would be too
- 5:07Speaker 1: insensitive and it would go down badly. And I'm like, no, no, no,
- 5:09Speaker 1: you're missing the point. Like this is the time we
- 5:12Speaker 1: need to be bringing money in because Top Lokes sends
- 5:15Speaker 1: mentors into schools and find boys who are frankly at
- 5:18Speaker 1: risk and gives them mentors, gives them boys who will
- 5:22Speaker 1: teach them about healthy masculinity, teach them about Stepping away
- 5:26Speaker 1: from the manosphere and how to get away from misogynistic
- 5:29Speaker 1: attitudes and how to actually be considerate and kind and
- 5:31Speaker 1: careful and how to be a man, a real man,
- 5:34Speaker 1: not the man, a man. That's what they're doing. I
- 5:37Speaker 1: just don't know if there's more important work that's out there.
- 5:39Speaker 1: So that's what I'm doing. And I'm obviously getting a
- 5:43Speaker 1: head full of steam about this, but I just, please donate.
- 5:46Speaker 1: And if you have donated, thank you so much. But
- 5:48Speaker 1: if you haven't, 600 more people is all I need.
- 5:52Speaker 1: 600 more people, 50 bucks each. We hit the 50K.
- 5:55Speaker 1: And tomorrow, I don't know how I'm going to survive
- 5:58Speaker 1: tomorrow because I'm going to walk 50 kilometers in one day.
- 6:01Speaker 1: If it takes me all day, I don't care. I'm
- 6:03Speaker 1: going to do it carrying a 10 kilo load. And
- 6:08Speaker 1: it's possibly going to be one of the hardest things
- 6:09Speaker 1: that I've ever done physically in my life.
- 6:11Speaker 2: One of the things that I so admire about you
- 6:15Speaker 2: is your desire to make the world a better place.
- 6:18Speaker 2: And this walk is so close. to your heart and
- 6:25Speaker 2: your reasons for doing it are so personal. And it's
- 6:29Speaker 2: going to be tough. There's no two ways about it.
- 6:32Speaker 2: It's going to be tough. But what I love is
- 6:34Speaker 2: that you actually don't have to do this alone. Our
- 6:38Speaker 2: son-in-law is going to join you tomorrow. I'm going to
- 6:41Speaker 2: join you tomorrow. You've got Kieran Foran and so many
- 6:44Speaker 2: others in the community who are rallying behind you because
- 6:49Speaker 2: this matters. This matters to so many people. It's not
- 6:52Speaker 2: a small thing number one it's not a small thing
- 6:55Speaker 2: that you're doing but it's not a small thing that
- 6:58Speaker 2: we're trying to fight against we're trying to bring more
- 7:01Speaker 2: awareness to.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Well we'll look to it in the show notes lift
- 7:05Speaker 1: the load lift the load help us to lift the
- 7:07Speaker 1: load 50k for 50k so that we can get more
- 7:09Speaker 1: mentors in front of more boys so that we have
- 7:11Speaker 1: fewer of these stories because my goodness i just don't
- 7:14Speaker 1: want to read another story like this it's crushing me
- 7:17Speaker 1: all right lighter news on the Happy Families podcast today.
- 7:21Speaker 1: And we're already halfway through it. After the break, my
- 7:25Speaker 1: I'll Do Better Tomorrow and one from Kylie as well,
- 7:27Speaker 1: which has just had the whole family in tears. Find
- 7:30Speaker 1: out more in just a second. Okay, this is the
- 7:40Speaker 1: Happy Families podcast. We're talking not just about lifting the load,
- 7:43Speaker 1: but also about how we can do better tomorrow. Kylie,
- 7:46Speaker 1: you were away last week. I had a whole lot
- 7:47Speaker 1: of work to do. I couldn't go with you. You
- 7:49Speaker 1: took a couple of kids. You spent some time in
- 7:50Speaker 1: Wollongong and on the New South Wales Central Coast with
- 7:54Speaker 1: family while I looked after the dog and did so
- 7:57Speaker 1: much work. And one of the hardest things about running
- 8:04Speaker 1: a small business is just how hard it is to
- 8:06Speaker 1: actually get family time. And I feel so awful about this,
- 8:11Speaker 1: but it's so, so hard because there's so much to
- 8:13Speaker 1: be done all the time. But while you were away
- 8:15Speaker 1: with the kids and I was working, Abby, our second daughter,
- 8:18Speaker 1: and her hubby, Elijah, they've been married for three months now,
- 8:21Speaker 1: three and a half months. They said, oh, we're coming
- 8:23Speaker 1: up to the coast. Maybe we could have dinner on
- 8:26Speaker 1: Sunday night. And I said, you betcha. What do you want?
- 8:28Speaker 1: And Abby said, I'd love a roast. So there's three
- 8:30Speaker 1: of us. And I cooked a roast for three. And
- 8:33Speaker 1: I felt so proud of myself. They showed up. They
- 8:35Speaker 1: were so ecstatic. Had the lamb roast, had the potatoes,
- 8:38Speaker 1: had the pumpkin, had the sweet potato, had the gravy.
- 8:40Speaker 1: I did it all. Did it all on my own.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I was so excited about it. And they loved it.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Then the next morning, they said, oh, we thought we'd
- 8:49Speaker 1: come around for breakfast. When you look at how much
- 8:53Speaker 1: a cafe breakfast costs these days, that's fair enough. So
- 8:56Speaker 1: I messaged and said, I'm on a bike ride. And
- 8:58Speaker 1: then I've got to get into the office, but I'll
- 8:59Speaker 1: be home at about nine. So help yourself or I'll
- 9:03Speaker 1: be there at nine o'clock. And she interpreted that as
- 9:05Speaker 1: if I show up at nine, dad's going to cook
- 9:06Speaker 1: me breakfast. And I was like, no, that's what I said,
- 9:09Speaker 1: but I can see how she interpreted it. So anyway,
- 9:10Speaker 1: I decided to cook brekkie for our 20 something year
- 9:13Speaker 1: old daughter and her husband. did a big harvest breakfast
- 9:15Speaker 1: with the spinach and the bacon and the eggs and
- 9:18Speaker 1: the mushrooms and the tomato. And Kylie, it just felt
- 9:23Speaker 1: so great to spoil, even though she's grown up and
- 9:25Speaker 1: even though she doesn't need it, it felt so great
- 9:27Speaker 1: to sit there with our adult daughter and her husband
- 9:30Speaker 1: and shoot the breeze, no agenda, just enjoy them. So
- 9:35Speaker 1: that's my I'll do better tomorrow for this week. I'd
- 9:38Speaker 1: love to talk about your birthday gifts and all that
- 9:40Speaker 1: sort of stuff, but that's what I've selected because taking
- 9:42Speaker 1: the time And building the relationship and the foundations when
- 9:45Speaker 1: they're young means that you get to do this stuff
- 9:47Speaker 1: when they're older. And it's just been, it was just
- 9:49Speaker 1: a joy.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Her birthday is coming up in a few weeks. And
- 9:54Speaker 2: after that experience, she actually sent me a message and
- 9:56Speaker 2: she said, it doesn't have to be this year, she said,
- 9:58Speaker 2: but for. either birthdays or Christmas moving forward, a daddy-daughter
- 10:03Speaker 2: or a mummy-daughter date would just be the bee's knees.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Kids spell love, T-I-M-E, right?
- 10:08Speaker 2: It's so heartwarming to know that of all the things
- 10:12Speaker 2: that they could ask for, they just want more time.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Okay, Mrs. Happy Families, your I'll do better tomorrow. Let's
- 10:18Speaker 1: hear it.
- 10:19Speaker 2: So a few weeks ago, I sent you a post
- 10:22Speaker 2: that came up in my feed and it was all
- 10:25Speaker 2: about resilience.
- 10:26Speaker 1: For every podcast listener, this drives Kylie crazy because I
- 10:28Speaker 1: do not have social media. And so Kylie has to
- 10:30Speaker 1: screenshot everything and send it through. Otherwise, I don't see anything,
- 10:34Speaker 1: which is wonderful. Anyway, you sent me the post about resilience.
- 10:37Speaker 2: And she did such a good job of visually showing
- 10:40Speaker 2: what resilience looks like. Too often, we think that if
- 10:45Speaker 2: we're resilient, that everything looks neat and tidy, that life
- 10:49Speaker 2: runs smoothly because we're strong, we're capable. But she had
- 10:54Speaker 2: on her board not knowing at one end and knowing
- 10:59Speaker 2: at the other end.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Oh, this is that Becky Kennedy one.
- 11:01Speaker 2: And then instead of a beautiful straight line of what
- 11:04Speaker 2: it looks like to go from not knowing something to
- 11:06Speaker 2: knowing something, It was this beautiful, messy rollercoaster ride all
- 11:09Speaker 2: the way through it. And she just explained, being resilient
- 11:13Speaker 2: looks messy when you're in it. It doesn't feel nice.
- 11:16Speaker 1: It feels awful.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And this week we've experienced a bit of that, and
- 11:19Speaker 2: I'm going to get emotional. But we've said goodbye to
- 11:22Speaker 2: another baby. Yeah. And the night before she left.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Yesterday. It was yesterday. We took her to the airport
- 11:29Speaker 1: and said, love you, have a great time.
- 11:33Speaker 2: The night before she left, you were tired. You said goodnight.
- 11:36Speaker 2: and she just wanted to keep talking and she was,
- 11:39Speaker 2: she was wrestling. Like this is hard. What, what, what
- 11:42Speaker 2: our kids are choosing to do with their lives is hard.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Our daughter is doing what two of her big sisters
- 11:48Speaker 1: have done. She's going on a mission for our church.
- 11:50Speaker 1: So it's 18 months. She's going somewhere she's never been before.
- 11:54Speaker 1: And she's going to be with people she's never spent
- 11:56Speaker 1: time with before. And she's going to spend 18 months
- 11:59Speaker 1: doing community service and, um, and sharing our religion with
- 12:03Speaker 1: people if they're open to hearing it. Um, I just
- 12:05Speaker 1: want to highlight for those who are not religious, if
- 12:08Speaker 1: you ever see the missionaries from our church wearing the
- 12:10Speaker 1: black name tags, please be nice to them because they're
- 12:12Speaker 1: just kids. But more than that.
- 12:15Speaker 2: And one of them's our kids. And one of them's
- 12:16Speaker 2: our daughter.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Yeah. But more than that, I was talking to somebody
- 12:20Speaker 1: the other day who's not religious at all. And he said,
- 12:22Speaker 1: I love what you're doing. Even if I'm not into
- 12:25Speaker 1: the religion thing, what I love about it is you've
- 12:27Speaker 1: got these 18 and 19 and 20 year old kids
- 12:31Speaker 1: and they're They're stepping away from home. They're stepping away
- 12:33Speaker 1: from comfort. They're stepping away from all of their selfish
- 12:36Speaker 1: preferences and pursuits. They're doing something where they're tapping into
- 12:40Speaker 1: the service of something bigger than them. And he said,
- 12:44Speaker 1: it must be so character building. It must be so
- 12:48Speaker 1: profoundly impactful in their lives. And that's what she's doing.
- 12:52Speaker 1: So she literally flew out yesterday, a couple of weeks
- 12:57Speaker 1: of training in New Zealand, and then she's off to
- 12:59Speaker 1: Adelaide for 18 months.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Wow. And as we sat there on the lounge room floor,
- 13:03Speaker 2: her contents of her suitcase scattered all over the lounge
- 13:09Speaker 2: room floor. And she just sobbed with me and she
- 13:12Speaker 2: just said, I don't know if I'm ready, Mum. Like,
- 13:15Speaker 2: I feel so scared right now. And I just said,
- 13:19Speaker 2: there are going to be so many times in your
- 13:21Speaker 2: life where you're going to feel this over and over again.
- 13:24Speaker 2: You never feel ready.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Yeah. Like, you never feel ready.
- 13:27Speaker 2: And if you do feel ready, then you're definitely not
- 13:29Speaker 2: ready because you have no idea what's coming.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Yeah, have some meal, Lottie.
- 13:34Speaker 2: But I am so grateful for each of our girls
- 13:38Speaker 2: and for the decisions that they've made to do something
- 13:41Speaker 2: bigger than themselves. And we started this podcast with Lift
- 13:45Speaker 2: the Load and this idea that you are doing something
- 13:48Speaker 2: that's larger than you and it's not about you. And
- 13:52Speaker 2: our girls are following suit in their own way and
- 13:54Speaker 2: doing their own things. And as we sat around the
- 13:56Speaker 2: dinner table the night before she left, and we had
- 14:01Speaker 2: our son-in-laws there, and I was just so overcome with
- 14:05Speaker 2: gratitude for these beautiful human beings that I happen to
- 14:08Speaker 2: get to call mine and ours, and that we get
- 14:12Speaker 2: to have a front row seat to this glorious, messy life.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I just couldn't be prouder.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:23Speaker 2: And being at the airport, oh my gosh.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Oh, the tears.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Annie didn't stop. She didn't stop the whole time. And
- 14:29Speaker 2: I managed to hold it together. And it literally wasn't
- 14:32Speaker 2: until we waved her off and we said goodbye. She
- 14:34Speaker 2: went through the departure gate. And our little grandbaby, Indy,
- 14:38Speaker 2: who had been so full of smiles only minutes before,
- 14:41Speaker 2: she just bowed her head. And I looked at her
- 14:43Speaker 2: and I said, Indy, I said, are you okay? And
- 14:45Speaker 2: the little bottom lived lips started quivering and.
- 14:47Speaker 1: She said, I want my auntie Annie. Well, that was it.
- 14:51Speaker 1: I was gone. And she cried all the way to
- 14:53Speaker 1: the car.
- 14:54Speaker 2: You actually looked at her and you said, have you
- 14:55Speaker 2: dribbled all over Lolly? You had no idea that she
- 14:57Speaker 2: had literally sobbed her little heart out. So that's my
- 15:03Speaker 2: I'll do better tomorrow. As a parent, it would be
- 15:05Speaker 2: so easy to want to rescue our kids when they're
- 15:07Speaker 2: in that wrestle. But the wrestle is actually where the
- 15:12Speaker 2: learning happens and where They get to learn who they
- 15:17Speaker 2: are and what they stand for and what's important and
- 15:20Speaker 2: what's not. And oh my gosh.
- 15:23Speaker 1: But you know you're doing it right when they go, right?
- 15:25Speaker 1: Like that's our job. Make yourself redundant. And the great
- 15:28Speaker 1: irony is if you do it well, because they don't
- 15:31Speaker 1: need you, they come back not because they need you,
- 15:34Speaker 1: but because they want to. be there you keep on
- 15:37Speaker 1: crying and i'm going to start crying okay we need
- 15:39Speaker 1: to wrap this up uh we really appreciate that you've
- 15:41Speaker 1: listened to the podcast today some some heavy stuff some
- 15:43Speaker 1: exciting stuff we hope that it's been a a good

- 15:50Speaker 1: again if you if you can please jump online and
- 15:53Speaker 1: donate to this lift the load top blokes foundation not-for-profit
