Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: An Attitude Of Gratitude
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Abadi here, you are listening to five
- 0:24Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle. I hope everyone listening to this
- 0:29Speaker 1: was able to enjoy Thanksgiving yesterday. I was so happy
- 0:36Speaker 1: to spend it with my mom in Brooklyn. It was
- 0:40Speaker 1: my first ever holiday spent since I've moved here, so
- 0:45Speaker 1: it's been almost eleven years now, I think, and I've
- 0:48Speaker 1: always wanted to do a city holiday, and so this
- 0:52Speaker 1: year was the year that I invited my mom and
- 0:55Speaker 1: her partner and my good friend to come over. We
- 0:59Speaker 1: did appetizers and everything at my place and then went
- 1:03Speaker 1: out for dinner and Chef's kiss. If you have never
- 1:08Speaker 1: been to Evelina in Fort Green, Brooklyn down on a
- 1:13Speaker 1: ten ten out of ten, would definitely recommend anyway. I
- 1:20Speaker 1: just want to talk a little bit today about gratitude.
- 1:23Speaker 1: You know, It's something that we chat about, I chat
- 1:27Speaker 1: about a lot on the show, and I would be
- 1:30Speaker 1: remiss if I didn't say that. It hasn't always been
- 1:35Speaker 1: something that I've been super cognizant of. I believe within
- 1:39Speaker 1: maybe the last three to four years, it's when gratitude
- 1:44Speaker 1: took another role in my life and the importance of
- 1:47Speaker 1: it really and the stress on it. Every single day,
- 1:51Speaker 1: whether it is in my journal first thing in the morning,
- 1:55Speaker 1: or when I sit down at my desk or before
- 1:57Speaker 1: I go to bed, I make it a priority to
- 2:01Speaker 1: be mindful of the things that I'm grateful for. When
- 2:05Speaker 1: I'm journaling, that's literally looking like a something that happened
- 2:10Speaker 1: over the past twenty four hours that I want to
- 2:12Speaker 1: make sure that I highlight that made me feel especially grateful.
- 2:16Speaker 1: When I sit down at my desk, I love to
- 2:18Speaker 1: write down three things then and then before I go
- 2:22Speaker 1: to bed as well, just taking a moment to pause
- 2:25Speaker 1: and reflect on the things that I am thankful for
- 2:29Speaker 1: in my life. And I and I've said this on
- 2:32Speaker 1: the show before, when I have trouble articulating what these
- 2:37Speaker 1: things might be, that's when I really do a pulse
- 2:40Speaker 1: check and I take a step back, and I ask myself,
- 2:42Speaker 1: what am I doing that I'm so busy in my
- 2:44Speaker 1: day to day that I'm not slowing down and finding
- 2:47Speaker 1: the small things right, finding the joy in the minutes
- 2:54Speaker 1: that pass. And these things, these gratitude moments, the highlights,
- 2:59Speaker 1: they don't need to necessarily be big things for me.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I'm sitting at my desk right now, I'm looking at
- 3:06Speaker 1: a weekly planner that I bought at Target last week,
- 3:09Speaker 1: and this is just the smallest thing that brings me joy.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I'm grateful for this. I'm grateful for the fact that
- 3:16Speaker 1: I went on a rum this morning. And running has
- 3:18Speaker 1: been challenging for me lately navigating injury. But I got
- 3:24Speaker 1: out there, and despite my body not being one hundred percent,
- 3:27Speaker 1: I felt so grateful for the opportunity to move for
- 3:31Speaker 1: my health as it looks right now, and instead of
- 3:34Speaker 1: focusing on how things aren't or the things that I am,
- 3:37Speaker 1: without truly just being so content with what is. I
- 3:42Speaker 1: know it's not easy to have that mindset each and
- 3:45Speaker 1: every day, but if you can approach your days with
- 3:50Speaker 1: this grateful lens, with a grateful heart, then I promise you,
- 3:55Speaker 1: when you look around and realize how thankful you are,
- 3:58Speaker 1: there will be more things to be thankful for in
- 4:02Speaker 1: your life. Period. My prompt for you this week, coinciding
- 4:07Speaker 1: with the holiday, what are three things you are thankful for? Again?
- 4:13Speaker 1: What are three things you are thankful for? Now? Before
- 4:18Speaker 1: I go into this week's listener question, I do want
- 4:22Speaker 1: to take a moment and say thank you to some
- 4:24Speaker 1: sponsors of the show and that is because in this
- 4:28Speaker 1: week's hurdle moment, where I spoke about my journey with depression,
- 4:32Speaker 1: it didn't feel right for me to include any sort
- 4:36Speaker 1: of ad messaging. So, as you know, sponsors a huge
- 4:40Speaker 1: part of what helps me keep doing this work, so
- 4:44Speaker 1: I need to give them credit where credit is due.
- 4:48Speaker 1: First up, my friends at Whoop. I literally just got
- 4:51Speaker 1: a package of so many absolutely beautiful Whoop accessories and
- 4:55Speaker 1: I cannot wait to switch up my strap. They are
- 5:00Speaker 1: running a huge promotion on accessories and Whoop memberships as
- 5:04Speaker 1: a whole this weekend, so now is as good of
- 5:08Speaker 1: a time as any to get in on the Woop game.
- 5:12Speaker 1: For those of you that may not know, Woop is
- 5:14Speaker 1: a fitness wearable and companion app that specializes in breaking
- 5:18Speaker 1: down your recovery, sleep and workouts. Every single morning, when
- 5:23Speaker 1: I open that app, it shows me what's up with
- 5:26Speaker 1: my sleep, along with other key help metrics like rusting
- 5:29Speaker 1: heart rate, and based on that, Woop then gives me
- 5:32Speaker 1: a daily recovery score from zero to one hundred percent,
- 5:35Speaker 1: so I know exactly how ready my body is to
- 5:38Speaker 1: take on the day. Just last week, I got my
- 5:42Speaker 1: flu shot and the morning after my shot. I woke
- 5:45Speaker 1: up and I was in the red. You can either
- 5:48Speaker 1: be in the red, the yellow, or the green. I
- 5:50Speaker 1: was in the red, and I said, you know what,
- 5:53Speaker 1: the last thing I need to do is push my
- 5:55Speaker 1: body way too far today. I'm a hold off on
- 5:58Speaker 1: today's workout until tomorrow. I was so much better for it.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Woop has helped me prioritize the positive routines of my life,
- 6:05Speaker 1: and the data around the negatives has really also assisted
- 6:09Speaker 1: me to cut out some of the habits that hurt
- 6:12Speaker 1: my sleep and recovery. Trust me, this is something that
- 6:17Speaker 1: will be in my routine for a really long time.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Start tracking your health, wellness, and fitness at a deeper
- 6:23Speaker 1: level today by heading out over to woop dot com

- 6:41Speaker 1: friends at Future. Future has made training for me truly

- 8:11Speaker 2: Hi Emily, it's Kathie. I'm looking for my next good book.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I thought I knew everything about Tunday from taking her
- 8:19Speaker 2: Pelton classes and listening to her on your podcast. Then
- 8:22Speaker 2: I got her book on Tuesday and couldn't put it down,
- 8:25Speaker 2: so I was done by Wednesday. I'm looking for the
- 8:27Speaker 2: same kind of read. You have any suggestions, I am
- 8:31Speaker 2: open to all of them. Thanks so much.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I love this question. And actually there's a woman that
- 8:37Speaker 1: her name is escaping me at the moment, but every
- 8:39Speaker 1: year she dms me and asks for a book recommendation
- 8:43Speaker 1: for an option to give to her co workers. I
- 8:46Speaker 1: think last year I may have recommended to her Shoe Dog,
- 8:51Speaker 1: and the year before the daily Mantra meditation reader that
- 8:57Speaker 1: I have. It's called Journey to the Heart, which is
- 8:59Speaker 1: a goodie. And she just popped in the other day
- 9:02Speaker 1: and I recommended her speak actually, so this made me
- 9:06Speaker 1: laugh a little bit. The book recommendation I'm going to
- 9:08Speaker 1: offer right now is from the one, the only, Michelle Obama.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I'm about a halfway through her new title, The Light
- 9:16Speaker 1: We Carry, and I am absolutely loving it, absolutely loving it.
- 9:21Speaker 1: So that is probably what I would recommend if you're
- 9:25Speaker 1: looking for another great book to gift, I would say
- 9:29Speaker 1: Untamed by Glennon Doyle or always a classic, The Alchemist
- 9:35Speaker 1: by Palo Kuelo. That's it for this week. Thanks all
- 9:39Speaker 1: so much for all of your kind words to me
- 9:42Speaker 1: over the last few days. It means the world and again,
- 9:47Speaker 1: talking about gratitude, talking about being thankful, you are surely
- 9:52Speaker 1: on the top of my list. Another hurdle conquered. Catchy
- 9:56Speaker 1: all next time. The mos
