- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show for a Monday nights.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Thanks for tuning in wherever you are, either on the
- 0:06Speaker 1: radio or online via the Varsity Network app or the
- 0:08Speaker 1: Varsitynetwork dot Com. Well, if you haven't noticed, the power
- 0:12Speaker 1: play has really taken off since the Husky's returned to
- 0:14Speaker 1: play in Milwaukee back in the late December. And a
- 0:17Speaker 1: big reason well players, obviously, but Tyler Heilton, the associate
- 0:22Speaker 1: coach for the Yukon hockey team, has also had a
- 0:26Speaker 1: big part in that, and it comes down to something
- 0:29Speaker 1: that Alan Iverson used to hate practice. Is it simplistic
- 0:33Speaker 1: to say that, Tyler, First of all, thanks for doing this,
- 0:36Speaker 1: But I know the conversations that you and Mike and
- 0:39Speaker 1: the coaching staff has a lot to do with practicing
- 0:42Speaker 1: the powerplay more. Is it simplistic to say.
- 0:44Speaker 2: That, yeah, thanks for having me on, Bob. I think
- 0:48Speaker 2: I think so.
- 0:49Speaker 3: I think we started to practice it a little bit more.
- 0:51Speaker 3: I think we we liked what we did in the
- 0:53Speaker 3: first half, and then we started doing more five one
- 0:56Speaker 3: zero in the second half when we got to Wisconsin.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Just so we're all in the same page as a group,
- 1:02Speaker 3: and I think it's obviously helped a little bit here
- 1:05Speaker 3: with us.
- 1:05Speaker 1: So what have you seen differently on the ice? Is
- 1:09Speaker 1: the puck moving better, the movement not only for the
- 1:11Speaker 1: puck but the players as well on the man advantage.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I think it's a little bit of both.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I think at the start of the year, I actually
- 1:19Speaker 3: liked our first half on the power player.
- 1:20Speaker 2: We just weren't scoring.
- 1:21Speaker 3: I think we were top five in a lot of
- 1:22Speaker 3: different categories with expected goals and shots, shots on goal
- 1:26Speaker 3: and high quality chance.
- 1:28Speaker 2: We just weren't scoring.
- 1:29Speaker 3: But I think the biggest thing is I think learning
- 1:32Speaker 3: from years prior is I thought we were very stagnant.
- 1:36Speaker 3: So guys have learned how to play in different spots
- 1:39Speaker 3: and they're kind of interchangeable. So that was a little
- 1:41Speaker 3: bit of an adjustment for the guys that they're just
- 1:43Speaker 3: not standing on a flank.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Sometimes you're gonna be the NetFront or sometimes you're gonna
- 1:46Speaker 2: be the bumper.
- 1:47Speaker 3: So I think they got more used to it, and
- 1:49Speaker 3: I think it's starting to show where guys are comfortable
- 1:52Speaker 3: and playing in all spots now.
- 1:54Speaker 1: That sounds familiar. In fact, in talking with Mike and
- 1:57Speaker 1: Gino for that matter, because I know they talk a
- 2:00Speaker 1: lot and they see each other practice and they actually
- 2:03Speaker 1: say they can use certain things for both hockey and basketball,
- 2:07Speaker 1: and movement is one of those. And it's amazing. In
- 2:10Speaker 1: the day and age of covering Gino's team, it's like
- 2:13Speaker 1: everybody can play every position now, or should be able
- 2:16Speaker 1: to play every position out Obviously, that seems to be
- 2:18Speaker 1: the same way for hockey. On the power play particularly.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think on the power play, I think
- 2:24Speaker 3: it's a lot like basketball because they have sets in basketball,
- 2:28Speaker 3: and I think even watching Gino's team and even watching
- 2:31Speaker 3: Dan's team, I think they have a lot of unique
- 2:32Speaker 3: sets that they run.
- 2:33Speaker 2: And I think that's something we've tried to do here a.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Little bit more, is add more movement into the power
- 2:39Speaker 3: play and not be as stagnant. And I think it
- 2:42Speaker 3: creates confusion because when I did PK here for a while,
- 2:45Speaker 3: I thought the teams that on the power play that
- 2:47Speaker 3: were moving around and you didn't really know where guys
- 2:49Speaker 3: were going to be or the toughest to defend.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Right. Taller Helton, the associate coach for the men's hockey team,
- 2:55Speaker 1: is with US Connecticut ice coming up this weekend. Now, look,
- 2:59Speaker 1: you can practice the cows come home, but you got
- 3:01Speaker 1: to have the Jimmy's and Joe's to be able to
- 3:04Speaker 1: to put the pocket the net. Obviously we've seen what
- 3:07Speaker 1: Joey Boldowney has done, but obviously one of the big
- 3:10Speaker 1: question marks coming into the season, where was the goal
- 3:13Speaker 1: scoring going to come from. It's come from a lot
- 3:15Speaker 1: of places, and it's good to see these guys mature
- 3:17Speaker 1: and boy, Joey's really taken off lately.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and he's he's been awesome. But as a group,
- 3:22Speaker 3: I think we knew that we were gonna have to.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Everyone's got the raise where they were last year, obviously
- 3:28Speaker 3: our returners, but Joey's been great. I mean he he's
- 3:31Speaker 3: always been a goal scorer. I remember when I first
- 3:33Speaker 3: watched him at Nichols. I think he ended up having
- 3:35Speaker 3: close to a goal game when we first recruited him,
- 3:38Speaker 3: and I thought he came into his own at the
- 3:40Speaker 3: second half of the year last year. I started to
- 3:42Speaker 3: play this type of hockey we needed. But he just
- 3:45Speaker 3: worked so hard constantly. He's strong, but every day he's
- 3:49Speaker 3: trying to get better, which I think it's starting to
- 3:51Speaker 3: show a lot more right now, Tyler.
- 3:53Speaker 1: It's a group effort. We've raved about the speed on
- 3:56Speaker 1: this team all season long, and boy really has showed
- 4:00Speaker 1: itself last couple of weekends New Hampshire Maine was fabulous.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I mean, you get four points out of orno, you've
- 4:05Speaker 1: done something special. But the speed certainly has really taken
- 4:09Speaker 1: a major step up from last season, hasn't it? Yeah?
- 4:12Speaker 2: Significantly. I think we skate a lot quicker.
- 4:15Speaker 3: I think we moved the puck better too as a group,
- 4:18Speaker 3: as we're more connected as a group of five on
- 4:20Speaker 3: the ice, which I think allows us to play quicker.
- 4:23Speaker 2: But I mean, I think the guys that we brought
- 4:26Speaker 2: in can really.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Skate, and it makes a huge difference because I think
- 4:29Speaker 3: for us, like we want to be able to skate,
- 4:32Speaker 3: we want to be able to pressure teams and create turnovers.
- 4:34Speaker 3: So I think skating and pace is a big thing
- 4:37Speaker 3: for us.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Tyler, what about the Kai and his work on the
- 4:40Speaker 1: power play? Quarterbacking the power play.
- 4:42Speaker 2: In a lot of situations.
- 4:43Speaker 1: What are your thought of his play?
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah, he's been really good. I thought he had a
- 4:46Speaker 3: really good weekend up at Maine. Obviously, gets an assist
- 4:50Speaker 3: on that goal to tie it up on Saturday, and
- 4:52Speaker 3: I think he did a good job getting the shot
- 4:54Speaker 3: through but he's been really good on the power play.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I think he's been better five on five. I think
- 4:59Speaker 2: he's showing more.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Flas of offense, probably five and five, And I think
- 5:02Speaker 3: that's just him kind of getting used to the league
- 5:04Speaker 3: and knowing what he can do and what he can
- 5:06Speaker 3: get away with a little bit more. But I think
- 5:08Speaker 3: he defends hard. He shows up and to practice every
- 5:12Speaker 3: day with a smile on his face, which is always nice,
- 5:15Speaker 3: and you never never lacks energy. It was fun to
- 5:18Speaker 3: see those guys. I mean, man can be kind of intimidating,
- 5:20Speaker 3: and Friday, I'm watching him during starting lineups and he's
- 5:25Speaker 3: got the biggest smile on his face and he thinks
- 5:27Speaker 3: his greatest thing.
- 5:27Speaker 2: He wasn't scared of the moment at all.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it was great. Atmosphere always is at al fun.
- 5:31Speaker 1: All right, seven shorties come on. That's tremendous. And look,
- 5:36Speaker 1: I think of the post of children, of the power
- 5:38Speaker 1: of the penalty kill. I think of Tats, I think
- 5:40Speaker 1: of Tabor Heath Slip. I think of those kind of
- 5:42Speaker 1: guys that have been doing what they've been doing since
- 5:45Speaker 1: freshmen and now the playoffs finally coming.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Yeah, No, for sure, it's been exciting to watch. And
- 5:50Speaker 3: I think, like you said earlier, I think we skate
- 5:52Speaker 3: really well. And when you talk about our penalty kill,
- 5:55Speaker 3: the guys that are killing, especially up front, can all
- 5:58Speaker 3: really skate. And the way we pressure and cost turnovers.
- 6:03Speaker 2: It's hard to for a power play.
- 6:04Speaker 3: It's scary at times, I know when we talk about it,
- 6:07Speaker 3: and guys that have short handed goals, you got to
- 6:08Speaker 3: be on your toes and be ready for them to jump.
- 6:10Speaker 3: And I know Coach talked about it last week. A
- 6:13Speaker 3: lot of teams are in a one three one, so you.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Can get a lot of odd man rushes off of it.
- 6:17Speaker 2: And the way we skate, I think it allows us
- 6:19Speaker 2: even more.
- 6:20Speaker 1: All right, Tyler, Finally a break from Hockey East, the
- 6:23Speaker 1: last break you get now it's well, other than the
- 6:26Speaker 1: Alaska game and coming up in February, but this weekend's
- 6:28Speaker 1: Connecticut Ice. It's there for the taking this year. I
- 6:32Speaker 1: don't know. I know Hockey East is first and foremost,
- 6:34Speaker 1: but you're playing for a trophy this week and I
- 6:36Speaker 1: got to think, if there's ever going to be a
- 6:38Speaker 1: year to do it, you've got the squad to do
- 6:40Speaker 1: it this year.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's an exciting tournament. It's a little
- 6:44Speaker 3: different than Milwaukee because we've played it. I think this
- 6:47Speaker 3: is probably the fifth year of it, so it's got
- 6:50Speaker 3: a little bit of the bean pot feel. I think
- 6:52Speaker 3: we got to keep on building it, but there's definitely
- 6:55Speaker 3: a different feeling. It feels more like Hockey East playoffs
- 6:58Speaker 3: or what an NCAA tournam would feel like. And obviously
- 7:02Speaker 3: losing I think the last three years in the championship
- 7:04Speaker 3: game to Quinnipiac has been We've been close, and I
- 7:09Speaker 3: think we're excited for the opportunity on Friday to show
- 7:12Speaker 3: that we're a little different than we were last year
- 7:13Speaker 3: and hopefully we can take advantage of it.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just sorry we won't be around to see
- 7:17Speaker 1: it this week, and the women are in Omaha, so
- 7:19Speaker 1: I'll certainly be following and Tyler appreciate a couple of minutes.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Best of luck this weekend, and I'll be back for
- 7:25Speaker 1: the Providence Series. I can't wait to do hockey again.
- 7:27Speaker 1: It seems like it's been forever for me, so looking
- 7:29Speaker 1: forward to the stretch run.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Awesome, Thanks for having me. It'd be good to have
- 7:32Speaker 2: you back.
- 7:32Speaker 1: All right, you bet? Thanks Tyler? Coming up next Thomas Sineo,
- 7:35Speaker 1: Ukon defenseman is The Yukon Hockey Coaches Show continues in
- 7:38Speaker 1: a moment here on Learfield.
