- Lucas: Hey, Luna! Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. Episode 145 — can you believe it? Luna: I know! And I feel like I'm actually getting better. Remember last time we were at the gym and I couldn't figure out that machine? Lucas: Oh, I remember. You were standing there looking lost. That's exactly what we're tackling today — how to ask for help at the gym. Luna: Yes! Because I definitely need that. So, what's the first thing I should say if I'm stuck? Lucas: The most basic and useful phrase is 'Können Sie mir helfen?' That means 'Can you help me?' Let's hear it slowly: Können Sie mir helfen? Luna: Können Sie mir helfen? Hmm, Können Sie mir helfen. That almost sounds like 'can you me help' in English. Lucas: Exactly! The word order is a bit different, but it works. Say it again? Luna: Können Sie mir helfen? Yeah, I like that. It's polite and direct. Lucas: Totally. Now, if you want to ask specifically about a machine, say 'Wie benutzt man dieses Gerät?' — 'How do you use this machine?' Try it. Luna: Wie benutzt man dieses Gerät? That's a mouthful. Wie benutzt man dieses Gerät? Lucas: You got it. Break it down: Wie — benutzt — man — dieses — Gerät. Perfect. Now imagine you're at the gym, you see a strange machine, and you say that to a staff member. Luna: Right. Wie benutzt man dieses Gerät? I can see myself using that. But what if I just need help in general, not about a specific thing? Lucas: Then you say 'Ich brauche Hilfe.' — 'I need help.' Let's hear it: Ich brauche Hilfe. Luna: Ich brauche Hilfe. That's straightforward. Ich brauche Hilfe. I need help. Lucas: Exactly. And if you want to be a bit more casual, you can start with 'Kann ich mal fragen?' — 'Can I ask something?' It's a nice icebreaker. Luna: Kann ich mal fragen? Oh, that's soft. I like that. Kann ich mal fragen? Lucas: Yeah, it's like 'Can I just ask?' And of course, after someone helps you, you say 'Danke für die Hilfe.' — 'Thanks for the help.' Let's practice the whole interaction. Luna: Okay. So I walk up to a staff member and say, 'Kann ich mal fragen? Wie benutzt man dieses Gerät?' They show me. Then I say, 'Danke für die Hilfe.' Nice. Lucas: Perfect. You just had a whole conversation in German. Let's do a quick review. Repeat after me: Können Sie mir helfen? Luna: Können Sie mir helfen? Lucas: Wie benutzt man dieses Gerät? Luna: Wie benutzt man dieses Gerät? Lucas: Ich brauche Hilfe. Luna: Ich brauche Hilfe. Lucas: Kann ich mal fragen? Luna: Kann ich mal fragen? Lucas: Danke für die Hilfe. Luna: Danke für die Hilfe. Lucas: Great! Now you're ready to ask for help at any German gym. And you know, if this podcast has been helping you make real progress with German, it's thanks to listeners like you that we can keep it ad-free. Luna: Yeah, it's a small way to give back. Now, let's imagine you're at the gym and you see someone struggling with a machine. How would you offer help? Luna: Hmm, maybe 'Kann ich Ihnen helfen?' — 'Can I help you?' Lucas: Yes! That's the same phrase but with 'Ihnen' instead of 'mir'. 'Kann ich Ihnen helfen?' — perfect. So now you can both ask for help and offer it. Luna: That's so useful. I feel like I could actually survive at a German gym now. Lucas: You totally could. And the more you practice these phrases, the more natural they'll feel. Try using them this week if you get a chance. Luna: Will do. Thanks, Lucas. And thanks to all our listeners. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn German with Fexingo!
