- 0:00Well, you've probably realized by now I'm not Pastor Clark or
- 0:03Pastor Lewis. My name is Sam Morris.
- 0:06I'm part of the leadership here at Calvary Chapel.
- 0:08I serve with the kids in Sunday school and do some teaching on
- 0:11Wednesday night as well as helping with some of the youth
- 0:13on Wednesday. So good morning to everyone,
- 0:18happy Palm Sunday. Let's let's pray and get into
- 0:21the word. Lord.
- 0:27It says in Isaiah that you tell us the end from the beginning,
- 0:29Father, so that we know that You are God and there is no other.
- 0:33Over 500 years ago, Lord, you prophesied of your coming into
- 0:36Jerusalem. You revealed the very day in the
- 0:39very manner of your coming, Lord.
- 0:41Lord, please help us to discern the times that we live in today.
- 0:44Lord. We see wars, rumors of wars,
- 0:46pestilence, plagues, Father, or in famines and diverse places.
- 0:51Lord. Lord, please just help us today
- 0:53in our generation. We look at the world around us
- 0:56and we wonder how much longer till you come again.
- 0:58Father, I pray that each person here today or listening would
- 1:02hear your word and be drawn closer to you in Jesus name,
- 1:05Amen. All right, so I think everyone's
- 1:10aware this is a very significant day, Palm Sunday, right?
- 1:14The fulfilment of many prophecies, the arrival of
- 1:17Messiah of Jerusalem. So I want to give a brief
- 1:19overview of sort of what we call what the Passion week, right?
- 1:24I know on, you know, Friday, Pastor Clark will talk about it
- 1:28and then Lewis on obviously on Resurrection Sunday, we'll get
- 1:30into a little bit more. But I thought it'd be a good
- 1:33idea just to give you a sort of a layout of the week, right?
- 1:36Jesus from Sunday to Sunday. So Palm Sunday writes A
- 1:40triumphal entry in the Jerusalem.
- 1:41Jesus arrives on the scene and this is as you'll find them in
- 1:45the Gospel, Luke, you'll get scholars at the bait, some of
- 1:48the events from Wednesday to Thursday and things like that.
- 1:50But a lot of people have it like this.
- 1:53So on Monday, he walks in and cleanses the temple, right?
- 1:55And this is actually the second cleansing of the temple.
- 1:57The first time it occurred in John 2, if you go back and look
- 2:00at that, at the beginning of his earthly ministry.
- 2:02And then he does it again at the end of his earthly ministry.
- 2:06And when he's there in the temple, he has the lame and the
- 2:09blind. They come in and he heals them,
- 2:11right? Just like it was prophesied in
- 2:12Isaiah. And then on Tuesday, he teaches
- 2:15in the temple and he's questioned by the religious
- 2:17leaders. Wednesday the religious leaders
- 2:21plot to kill Jesus, and then Judas agrees to betray him.
- 2:24Thursday you'll see the Passover with his disciples they arrest
- 2:27in the Garden of Gethsemane. And then Friday, Good Friday,
- 2:30you see Peter's denial, Jesus questioned by the Sanhedrin,
- 2:35Pilate and Herod, and then crucified in the tomb before
- 2:38sundown. And then Saturday's the Sabbath,
- 2:40right? The day of rest.
- 2:42And then on Sunday, the 1st day of week, obviously we're all
- 2:44very familiar with that resurrection Sunday, right?
- 2:47Now you're going to get some people that argue Christ's
- 2:50death, whether it occurred on Friday or Thursday because they
- 2:52say he had to be in the tomb for three days.
- 2:54But if you look at Jewish, you know, the Jewish day, it's
- 2:58sundown to sundown. So people who say Good Friday,
- 3:01right? If he was in the tomb before
- 3:03Friday evening, there's one day, then he's there Saturday, and
- 3:06then he raises from that on Sunday, right?
- 3:08So that'd be 3 days. So you get that argument.
- 3:10We're not going to belabor that because me, some people say, Oh,
- 3:13no, it's Thursday to get the full 3 days.
- 3:15The most important part is he wasn't in the tomb anymore on
- 3:18Sunday, right? So we're not going to worry
- 3:20about that one. So before we get in the loop
- 3:24today, and that's where we'll be in Chapter 19, if you would
- 3:27please turn with me to Exodus 12 because I think it's important
- 3:30to understand the Passover in itself as you look at this week
- 3:33ahead for Jesus. So, Exodus 12.
- 3:47So you have the 1st 9 plagues in Egypt, right?
- 3:50And then it gets to the 10th one in Pharaoh's heart's been
- 3:52hardened. And God says I'm, I'm going to
- 3:54do something else, right? I'm going to take the first born
- 3:57from everyone. But there's a way for you guys
- 3:59to escape at the Israelites, right?
- 4:01And he institutes the Passover where they had to take a lamb
- 4:05and put the blood above their doorpost.
- 4:06But we're going to read it here. So Exodus 12 verse, we'll go
- 4:11through verses one through 6 here.
- 4:13And it says, now the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land
- 4:16of Egypt, saying, this month shall at the beginning of
- 4:18months, it shall be the first month of the year to you speak
- 4:22to all the congregation of Israel, saying on the 10th of
- 4:25this month, and that's the 10th of Nissan, every month shall
- 4:28take for himself. Every man shall take for himself
- 4:30a lamb according to the House of his father, a lamb for a
- 4:33household. And if the household is too
- 4:35small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house
- 4:38take it according to the number of persons, according to each
- 4:41man's need. You shall make your count for
- 4:43the lamb. Your lamb shall be without
- 4:45blemish, a male of the first year.
- 4:47You may take it from the sheep or from the goats.
- 4:49They shall keep it until the 14th day of the same month.
- 4:52And the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall
- 4:55kill it at twilight. So that's the 14th of Nissan,
- 4:58four days later. So if you jump down the verse 12
- 5:00now says, For I will pass through the land of Egypt on
- 5:05that night and I will strike all the first born in the land of
- 5:07Egypt, both man and beast and against all the gods of Egypt.
- 5:11I will execute judgment. I am the Lord.
- 5:14Now the blood shall be assigned for you on the House is where
- 5:16you are. When I see the blood, I will
- 5:18Passover you and the plague shall not be on you to destroy
- 5:21you when I strike the land of Egypt.
- 5:24So when you look back at the passion we Christ arrives on
- 5:27Sunday, right? He's tested by the religious
- 5:29leaders for four days and then he's killed at twilight, right
- 5:33and buried Friday evening. So really parallels the Passover
- 5:37that God instituted going back into the Exodus.
- 5:41It's almost like God was trying to show them something through
- 5:44their entire history leading up to that point, right?
- 5:46That your true Passover lamb has arrived.
- 5:49You need His blood to avoid this judgement that's coming.
- 5:52So you either can accept him in turn or you're going to face
- 5:55judgement. So we can get in the loop now.
- 5:58So if you go to Luke 19 verse 28.
- 6:09So we'll be jumping around a little bit today because this is
- 6:11a very prophetic event, very historical.
- 6:15So as we work down through, we're going to be jumping
- 6:17through a couple different verses, but we'll start here in
- 6:21Luke 19, verse 28 says, when he had said this, he went on ahead
- 6:27going up to Jerusalem and it came to pass when he drew near
- 6:31to Beth, Fuji and Bethany at the mountain called all of it that
- 6:33He sent two of his disciples saying, going to the village
- 6:36opposite you, whereas you enter, you will find the Colt tide and
- 6:40on which no one has ever sat loose it and bring it here.
- 6:43And if anyone asks you, why are you losing it?
- 6:46Thus you shall say to him, because the Lord has needed it.
- 6:49So right off the bat, my first thing is like, Jesus knew what
- 6:52the disciples were going to ask here, right?
- 6:53I think of like a modern equivalent.
- 6:55You're walking into someone's driveway and you're just going
- 6:58to go in and take their car, right?
- 6:59Someone comes out of the house and they're like, Hey, what are
- 7:01you? What are you doing, right?
- 7:02So Jesus is preempting saying, Hey, tell me the Lord has need
- 7:05of it and they'll understand that, right?
- 7:10It's it's one of those things that you you think about and
- 7:13it's kind of like, Oh yeah, the Lord doesn't need it.
- 7:15They take and they just walk away.
- 7:17But you think those people there and what we'll see that here
- 7:21coming up in verse 3234, how they respond to that.
- 7:24They must have had some sort of awareness to what was going on,
- 7:27some awareness to who this Lord may be, right?
- 7:29Just to hand over their donkey and colt and walk away from it.
- 7:32So in verse 32, so those who were sent their way found it
- 7:36just as he said to them. But as they were losing the
- 7:38colt, the owners of it said to them, why are you losing the
- 7:41colt? And they said the Lord has need
- 7:43of him. So going back to their thoughts,
- 7:48right, So they either recognize these disciples and have seen
- 7:51them with Jesus and they knew who the Lord was that they're
- 7:53Speaking of, right? Or they understood the prophecy
- 7:56in Zechariah 9. So if you guys want to turn
- 7:58there to Zechariah 9, it's a little bit before Matthew.
- 8:01So don't go too far into the Old Testament back just a little
- 8:05bit. So Zechariah 99 says, rejoice
- 8:22greatly, O daughter of Zion, shout, O daughter of Jerusalem,
- 8:25behold, your king is coming to you.
- 8:27He's just in having salvation lowly and riding on a donkey, a
- 8:31colt the full of a donkey. I will cut off the chariot from
- 8:34Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem.
- 8:36The battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the
- 8:40nation's. His dominion shall be from sea
- 8:42to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth.
- 8:45So you see, God had prophesied 500 years before the survival of
- 8:49Christ that he would ride in on a cold a full of a donkey. 500
- 8:54years before it happened He had prophesied of it.
- 8:57So go back to Luke here in verse 35.
- 9:02Then they brought him to Jesus and they threw their own clothes
- 9:04on the cold and they set Jesus on him.
- 9:06And as he went, many spread their clothes on the road.
- 9:10So Matthew's gospel, if you go look in chapter 21 of Matthew,
- 9:14you'll see that there was a great multitude.
- 9:15It was not just a few of the disciples or the 12 disciples,
- 9:18right? It says there was a great
- 9:19multitude that laid their clothes down on the road.
- 9:22That's where you see them cutting down branches, palms,
- 9:24right? The lay lay on the road and
- 9:26spread them across there. So when you think about the idea
- 9:30of laying clothes on the road, it's an idea that they're
- 9:32showing respect for a king. There's a couple of examples of
- 9:35it. The one that you see in the Old
- 9:37Testament is give you a little bit of background.
- 9:39So I think everyone probably knows who Ahab and Jezebel are.
- 9:43You probably don't see too many people named Jezebel for a good
- 9:46reason. But so Elisha and the sons of
- 9:51the prophet. Elisha tells one of the sons of
- 9:53the prophet go annoying Jehu king, right.
- 9:56I'm going to print out God's pronouncing judgement on Ahab
- 9:59and Jezebel and their family line.
- 10:01So one of the sons of prophet runs out, goes to Jehu, anoints
- 10:04him king takes off running because I think he's afraid he's
- 10:07going to kill him. He runs back and Jehu gets back
- 10:09to his sort of entourage and they say, oh, what, what did
- 10:13what did that crazy prophet say? He's that he's just a crazy guy
- 10:15in there. And they're like, no, really,
- 10:16what did he tell you? He said I'd be king and he
- 10:19anointed me. So immediately all his entourage
- 10:22lays down their garments before him on the steps, right?
- 10:25It's a sign of royalty, a sign of a king showing respect for
- 10:28him. Now, the idea riding on a
- 10:31donkey, you know, when Jesus came in on a donkey, this is
- 10:34very significant in terms of his first coming versus second
- 10:36coming. When he comes in on a donkey, it
- 10:38symbolizes peace and humility. So normally a king, when they
- 10:42come into a city and they're as a ruler, right?
- 10:45They're looking to conquer, they're going to come in on a
- 10:46horse, right? That sign of power, a conquering
- 10:50king. And that's where you see Israel
- 10:54and the Jewish people, right? They, they missed it.
- 10:56And you even see the disciples, the chapters before, when Christ
- 10:59is telling them, hey, this is what's coming.
- 11:00I'm going to be cut off. They're going to kill me.
- 11:02I'm going to die for the sins of the world.
- 11:04And the disciples had no ID. And you see that all throughout
- 11:07the Gospels that they were just as blind as everyone else was to
- 11:09what was going to come because they, they expected their,
- 11:13they've been taught their entire lives that the Messiah would
- 11:15show up, set them free from Rome, and he'd established his
- 11:18Kingdom. That's where you see James and
- 11:19John and the mother arguing about, hey, when you come into
- 11:22your power, can my son sit on your left and right hand, Right.
- 11:25So they're thinking of this earth, earthly rule, which will
- 11:28happen. But that's the second coming.
- 11:29And they didn't. They didn't quite get that.
- 11:37So if you look again in Luke 19/9, a little bit before Jesus
- 11:41rides in, it's the story of Zacchaeus, right?
- 11:42And you get to the end of that and he says salvation has come
- 11:45to this house. What Jesus came to do in his
- 11:49first coming at the end of that verse in 99, it says that he
- 11:52came to seek and save that which was lost.
- 11:54That was his goal of the first coming, right?
- 11:57He's the true Passover lamb. And you see that reference
- 11:59throughout the New Testament, the Gospels.
- 12:00You see a Peter people calling him the Lamb of God.
- 12:03John specifically called him the Lamb of God.
- 12:06He is their Passover lamb in our Passover lamb, right?
- 12:11So if you want to turn with me to Luke 4, so just go back a
- 12:15couple pages. We're going to talk a little bit
- 12:17more about his first coming compared to the second coming.
- 12:25So Luke 4, he's in, in Nazareth, right in his hometown.
- 12:28He walks into the synagogue and he's reading from Isaiah.
- 12:36So in Luke 4 verse 16, so so he came to Nazareth where he had
- 12:42been brought up, and as his custom was, he went into the
- 12:45synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read.
- 12:47And he was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah.
- 12:49And there's a lot of prophecies in Isaiah for telling of the
- 12:53coming of Christ and what he would do.
- 12:56He'd cause the blind to see the lame to walk.
- 12:59So he stood up and read Start here, verse 17.
- 13:02And he was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah.
- 13:04When he had opened the book, he found the place where it was
- 13:06written. The Spirit of the Lord is upon
- 13:08me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor.
- 13:12He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim
- 13:15liberty to the captives and recover of the sight of the
- 13:18blind, to set liberty at those who are pressed to proclaim the
- 13:21acceptable year of the Lord. So that that's Christ's first
- 13:26coming, right? He came to sake and see, save
- 13:30and seek that which was lost. We are right now in the
- 13:33acceptable year of the Lord. And you notice he didn't quite
- 13:37finish that verse. If you go look at that verse in
- 13:39Isaiah, the next line is in the day of vengeance of our Lord,
- 13:42right? So that's his second coming.
- 13:44That's what's coming next. So the time that Christ first
- 13:47came until now we are all in the acceptable year of the Lord.
- 13:53So that second coming and this time He is going to come on a
- 13:56horse. If you go to Revelation 19, God
- 13:59willing, we get there with Lewis.
- 14:01If the rapture of Christ doesn't return before then.
- 14:12So Revelation 19, verse 11, it says, Now I saw heaven opened,
- 14:23and behold a White Horse. And he who sat on him was called
- 14:26faithful and true, and in righteousness he judges and
- 14:29makes war. His eyes were like a flame of
- 14:31fire, and on his head were many crowns.
- 14:33He had a name written that no one knew except himself.
- 14:36He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and his name is
- 14:40called the Word of God. And the armies in heaven clothed
- 14:44in fine linen white. And queen followed him on white
- 14:47horses. Now out of his mouth goes a
- 14:49sharp sword, that with it he should strike the nation's, and
- 14:51he himself will rule them with a rod of iron.
- 14:54He himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of
- 14:57Almighty God. And he has on his robe and on
- 15:00his thigh a name written King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
- 15:03So that's the second coming of Christ.
- 15:04He's going to come in judgment in his second coming.
- 15:07He's he's going to be on a horse that time and they will
- 15:09recognize him that time. So I look at that and you think
- 15:20about being in the acceptable year of the Lord.
- 15:23We have a chance today to believe, right?
- 15:26To put your faith in Christ while we're in this time.
- 15:28Because listen, not everyone knows when they're going to die.
- 15:32Your days are numbered. You can walk out today.
- 15:34You can get in the car, start driving down the road, someone's
- 15:37texting and they hit you and you're, you're, you're done,
- 15:39right? It's over.
- 15:40There's a lot of people texting out there in their cars.
- 15:43There's a lot of accidents. There's a lot of sickness.
- 15:45You just don't know the number of your days.
- 15:49And James says it's pointed once for a man to die and then comes
- 15:53the judgement. And Christ said that he's the
- 15:55way, the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father but
- 15:57through him. So when you put those together
- 15:59and you hear a lot about, Oh no, I'll wait to get right with
- 16:02Christ, right? I'll wait, I'll put it off until
- 16:04I'm dead so I can live this life now and enjoy everything I'm
- 16:06enjoying. You can live in sin.
- 16:08That's not how it works. And you see books written out
- 16:11there that say, you know God, God loves everyone, which he
- 16:14does. He loves everyone but they say,
- 16:17oh, he'll just keep him in time out for so many years and after
- 16:19that he'll let him free and everyone be in heaven together.
- 16:22If that were so, then the question would be why?
- 16:25Why in the Garden of Gethsemane, why did Christ say Father let
- 16:29this cup pass from me, right? If there's another way, let it
- 16:32pass from me and there wasn't right?
- 16:34He said not my will, but your will be done.
- 16:36So to contradict the character of our Father.
- 16:39If it wasn't that way now, I mean, for me, hey, he's right to
- 16:44do whatever he wants. He could say, OK, I'm going to
- 16:47let everyone out, you know, and be good with it like I could.
- 16:49I couldn't argue him if he wants to do that in the future.
- 16:52But everything that we see here in Scripture says that once
- 16:56we're going to die and then we're going to be waiting for
- 16:57judgement. So we have to make our decision
- 17:00today, right? So verse 37, Luke 19.
- 17:19Then as he, as he was now drawing near the descent of
- 17:22Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began
- 17:24to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for the for the
- 17:28mighty works they had been there for they had seen saying,
- 17:32blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord, peace in
- 17:35heaven and glory in the highest. And then in Matthew's Gospel you
- 17:38see Hosanna to the Son of David, right?
- 17:40Hosanna meaning saved now and son of David is obviously
- 17:44Messianic. So that's why you see in this
- 17:46next verse here, the Pharisees and some of the Pharisees called
- 17:49to him from the crowd. Teacher, rebuke your disciples.
- 17:52They knew what the disciples were claiming Christ to be.
- 17:54They knew what the multitude was saying.
- 17:57What was, you know, calling out the Christ.
- 17:59And that's from Psalm 118. If you want to go there and look
- 18:02at that one, but we'll stay here for now.
- 18:05And Jesus answered them in verse 40.
- 18:07He said, but I tell you that if these should keep silent, the
- 18:11stones would immediately cry out.
- 18:14When you think about that, the culmination of prophecy from 500
- 18:17years from Zechariah, and even before that of the coming
- 18:20Messiah, Christ is saying this is such a significant event that
- 18:23even if there was no one around, the rocks would cry out.
- 18:26And now it's his coming. And it's going to be the same
- 18:28way when he comes a second time, right?
- 18:30Because it's been prophesied of and you can't get around God's
- 18:32word. If he says something's going to
- 18:34happen, it's going to happen, right?
- 18:36We're not going to get around that.
- 18:44So when you see the mighty works, right, it says the
- 18:46disciples are praising him for the mighty works that they had
- 18:48seen. What did they see in the
- 18:51Gospels, right? They they saw the deaf, lame and
- 18:53blind healed. They saw multiple people raised
- 18:56from the dead. Lazarus, he's already in the
- 18:58tomb for four days, brought back to life.
- 19:01Those are the mighty works that he had seen.
- 19:03When you think about that, just seeing something doesn't always
- 19:07make you believe. You think in our own life, you
- 19:09know, we we know it's Jesus after he's resurrected, right?
- 19:13He says to Thomas, because you have seen, right, you believe a
- 19:16blessed are those who believe and have not seen.
- 19:19That's kind of where we are, right?
- 19:21We believe, and even though we didn't see all the miracles, we
- 19:23didn't see him physically erased from the dead, but we believe
- 19:26because he changed our hearts and he came into us.
- 19:29So you can get caught up. In all this knowledge and all
- 19:31this idea, like the Pharisees, they obviously knew a lot about
- 19:34God. They didn't take it the heart
- 19:35and they kind of created a bunch of traditions that were
- 19:37nonsense. And God, I'm in a lot of
- 19:39trouble. But you can get caught up in
- 19:41this idea that you know so much about Jesus, but you don't
- 19:45really know Jesus, right? And what's it say when Peter,
- 19:49Jesus was asking the disciples, who do people say I am?
- 19:53Some of the disciples said, Oh, you're Elijah.
- 19:55Or some people were saying you're, you're John the Baptist
- 19:58or some prophet. And what what's what's Peter say
- 20:01to them? You know, what's Peter say back
- 20:03to Jesus? He says.
- 20:05No, you're, you're the Christ, you're the Son of the living
- 20:07God. And that's the most important
- 20:09question that you can answer for yourself.
- 20:11Who is Jesus to you? It's not who's Jesus to me?
- 20:13I can't make that decision for you to believe.
- 20:16You have to have that in your own heart, whether Christ is the
- 20:19Son of the living God, your Messiah, not my Messiah.
- 20:22He has to be your Messiah, right?
- 20:30So another point here, it says it talks about the Mount of
- 20:32Olives. That's pretty significant as
- 20:34well. We'll get to that here in a
- 20:36second. Throughout Christ's.
- 20:40Ministry on earth, you don't see him too often declaring himself
- 20:44as the Messiah. This is one of the first times,
- 20:47I think the first time really, that he walks in and says he
- 20:49sets it up, goes, gets the donkey, has the everything
- 20:52organized basically. And the fairy Pharisees say
- 20:54rebuke your disciples because they're claiming this.
- 20:57And he says, Nope, the rocks would cry out if, if they didn't
- 21:00declare it in all the gospels, you'd see him heal people.
- 21:04You'd see all these miracles. And what would he tell the
- 21:06people after that? Keep quiet.
- 21:07Don't tell anyone that I'm basically here, right?
- 21:10He's kind of being hush, hush about it because his hour had
- 21:13not come. You'd see that throughout the
- 21:14gospel that says for his hour had not come because he didn't
- 21:17want the people taking him and marching him into Jerusalem
- 21:20before the will of God right before the time that he was
- 21:22appointed to arrive in Jerusalem on that day.
- 21:33All right, so. Speaking of the Mount of Olives,
- 21:35his first coming, right? So he comes in on the Mount of
- 21:37Olives. Let's talk a little bit about
- 21:40the second coming now. So if you go to Acts One, it's
- 21:43the ascension of Christ. And he goes up into the.
- 21:46Clouds. We're going to jump around a
- 21:48couple different verses here. So if you flip to.
- 21:52The right from Luke. So verse 9.
- 22:11Here says, now when He had spoken these things while they
- 22:13watched, He was taken up in a cloud, received him out of their
- 22:16sight, and while they look steadfastly toward heaven, as He
- 22:18went up, behold, 2 men stood by them in white apparel, who also
- 22:23said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven?
- 22:25This same Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven will so
- 22:29come in like manner as you saw him go into heaven.
- 22:32And then verse 12, it says then they return to Jerusalem from
- 22:34the mount called all of it, which is near Jerusalem, the
- 22:36Sabbath day's journey. So you see Jesus came in the
- 22:40first coming on, you know, through the Mount of Olives.
- 22:42He ascended back into the clouds from the Mount of Olives.
- 22:46If you go to Zechariah 14, we're going to see in the second
- 22:48coming that he's also going to return to the Mount of Olives.
- 22:54So if you go to Zechariah. 14 Just a little bit to the left in
- 22:57Matthew. All right, so we'll pick up.
- 23:12There in verse one it says Zechariah 14 One, behold, the
- 23:15day of the Lord is coming, and your spoil will be divided in
- 23:18your midst. For I will gather all nations to
- 23:20battle against Jerusalem. The city shall be taken, the
- 23:23house is rifled, the women ravished, half of the city shall
- 23:26go into captivity, but the remnant of the people shall not
- 23:28be cut off from the city. And then the Lord will go forth
- 23:31and fight against those nations as he fights in the day of
- 23:33battle. And that day his feet will stand
- 23:36on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east.
- 23:39The Mount of Olives shall be split into two from east to
- 23:42West, making a very large valley.
- 23:44Half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it
- 23:46toward the South. So I have never been to Israel,
- 23:50but I do have Google Maps and Google Earth, so you can look at
- 23:54this. So if you look at the Mount of
- 23:56Olives, right, I'm trying to get my bearings right here, so.
- 24:02It's on the other side. Of the eastern gate of
- 24:03Jerusalem. So this is my left hand.
- 24:05So we're going to go here, right?
- 24:06So eastern gate of Jerusalem. Now I'm backwards either way.
- 24:10It's on the other side of the eastern gate of Jerusalem,
- 24:11right? So Christ is going to arrive
- 24:13there and he's going to split that mountain and you have the
- 24:15Kidron Valley in between there. Now, there's some interesting
- 24:18things about that right now today.
- 24:20So the eastern gate where Christ has prophesied to enter back
- 24:24into Jerusalem in 1541, the Ottoman Turks, I think it was
- 24:30Suleiman the Magnificent, he sealed that gate shut because of
- 24:34the Jewish prophecy that the Messiah would arrive there.
- 24:37And they also put a Muslim graveyard right in front of it
- 24:39because they thought, oh, a Jewish person is not going to
- 24:41defile himself coming through the graveyard, right?
- 24:44So they believed in it from the Jews, right?
- 24:46And then on the other side of the Kidron Valley, on the Mount
- 24:49of Olives, there's one of the most ancient and largest Jewish
- 24:52graveyards awaiting the arrival of the Messiah.
- 24:55So you got a pretty good picture of these people are trying to
- 24:57keep the Messiah out. And on the other side you have
- 24:59all the people waiting their Messiah, right?
- 25:02Pretty interesting when you look at that.
- 25:04But for them sealing that eastern gate, it's also called
- 25:08the Golden Gate of the beautiful gate in Jerusalem.
- 25:11You can go look this up online. You'll see images of it.
- 25:14I wouldn't be banking on the Muslims keeping him out when he
- 25:17arrives. If he's going to split the
- 25:19mountain in two, I think that's also going to split and he's
- 25:22just going to kind of walk in. So, you know, they they can try,
- 25:26but I don't think it's, I think it's going to work there.
- 25:31All right, so back to Luke 19. So this section we're going to.
- 25:45Get into a little bit more history and prophecy.
- 25:51And there's. A reason for belaboring some of
- 25:53this because I think, I think it's important that we know that
- 25:56everything in God's Word is true, right?
- 25:59You can go back and look at the historical sites.
- 26:01They keep digging places, they keep finding more and more.
- 26:04So it's important to know that what you have in here is true
- 26:07because when you get into the New Testament says everyone who
- 26:09believes in the name of the Lord, right, who calls the name
- 26:12of Jesus will be saved. If that wasn't true, why should
- 26:15you believe that, right? So we're going to go through
- 26:18some of this. So in verse 41 of Luke 19, it
- 26:25says now as he drew near, he saw the city and he wept over it,
- 26:28saying, if you hadn't known, even you, especially in this
- 26:31your day, the things that make for your peace, but now they're
- 26:34hidden from your eyes. For days will come upon you when
- 26:37your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround
- 26:40you, close you in on every side, and level you and your children
- 26:44within you to the ground. They will not leaving you one
- 26:46stone upon another because you do not know the time of your
- 26:50visitation. That's that's a tough one,
- 26:56right? To hear that one.
- 27:00First time Israel they. They missed the first coming of
- 27:02Christ, and it's been kind of a pattern for them.
- 27:05If you read the Old Testament, what did they do?
- 27:07The Joseph. They rejected him, threw him in
- 27:09a pit, and then sold him as a slave to Egypt.
- 27:11And the second time they accepted him.
- 27:13Same thing with Moses. Remember when he went in to try
- 27:15to Save the Children of Israel? They rejected him and they
- 27:18wanted him gone. And then the Lord sent him back
- 27:20and they finally accepted him. It's a bit of their pattern,
- 27:23right? And then you see in Jesus's
- 27:25final public sermon in the temple, right, he really lays
- 27:29into the religious leaders and it's all those woes, right?
- 27:32I think there's seven of them in there.
- 27:33It says, woe do you scribes, Pharisees, you hypocrites.
- 27:36And then he gets through all this that he's basically
- 27:39hammering him with, and he gets the end of me.
- 27:40He says, you will not see me again until you say, blessed is
- 27:43he who comes in the name of the Lord, right?
- 27:45Speaking of that nation of Israel, who right now their eyes
- 27:48are blinded. And you'll see that in Romans
- 27:5011, the Paul says that their eyes have been blinded until the
- 27:54fullness of the Gentiles be brought in.
- 27:57So it's. A bit of a big.
- 27:58Judgement on them. So a little bit of history for
- 28:01this section of scripture. So in 68 AD.
- 28:08The Vespasian, who was a general at the time, had conquered the
- 28:11outside areas like Galilee area leading up to Jerusalem, and he
- 28:17was laying siege to Jerusalem. And then all of a sudden Emperor
- 28:21Nero dies and he has to run back to Rome, right?
- 28:25So you see in the New Testament, Christ warning them, and I think
- 28:29it's even in the next chapter of Luke, he says that when you see
- 28:31Jerusalem surrounded, flee, right?
- 28:34He tells them to get out, run. And that's why you also see in
- 28:38the book of the Acts that it's possible that.
- 28:42The Holy Spirit and God. Put on those believers in
- 28:45Jerusalem, on their hearts, that's all they had and
- 28:47basically live communally together because in a short
- 28:49period of time they were going to have to flee for their lives.
- 28:52And if you have a house and you have a bunch of land, that's
- 28:55going to make it pretty tough to get rid of that, right?
- 28:57So that's, that's the thought behind that because you don't
- 28:59really see that elsewhere in the Scripture and some of the other
- 29:02letters that Paul writes to the church.
- 29:04So there's a thought for that one, but we'll keep going here.
- 29:11So once Emperor Nero died, there was a bit of a struggle with
- 29:15some other guys, but eventually that's Basalum and that's when
- 29:17that the city and the sanctuaries destroyed, he takes
- 29:20over, right? If you ever run any accounts to
- 29:22Josephus, he might be a little bit favorable to Titus and the
- 29:27way he talks about him because he basically, I wouldn't say he
- 29:30was a traitor turned on the Jews, but he kind of went on to
- 29:33the Roman side. And that's how he was able to
- 29:35live right under that line of emperors.
- 29:39But so Titus, he goes back, sieges Jerusalem again, all the
- 29:43Jews at the final hurrah get barricaded into the temple.
- 29:48And there was an argument and Josephus was talking about this,
- 29:50who's a Jewish slash Roman historian that Titus didn't want
- 29:55to burn the temple down because he kind of wanted to keep his
- 29:58like a trophy, right, for the conquest.
- 30:01Like, hey, look what we did. Look at this beautiful building,
- 30:03right, that we have and wipe them out.
- 30:05So he can kind of conferred with his generals and said that no,
- 30:07we're going to, we're going to keep it.
- 30:09But you know, you kept getting the Jews coming out and
- 30:11attacking the Romans and the Roman soldiers eventually set
- 30:13fire to it and burn the temple down.
- 30:15So they end up wiping out the temple in 70AD.
- 30:19And when you see about not. One stone being left upon
- 30:22another. When they wiped out the temple
- 30:24and it burned down, a lot of the walls were laid with gold,
- 30:27right? So that burned down and melted
- 30:29into the cracks. And then the Romans went in
- 30:31there to get all the gold and the treasure out.
- 30:33They picked apart the stones and threw them out so that even
- 30:36today you can see images online, if you've been to Jerusalem, you
- 30:39can see that there's, these massive stones have been thrown
- 30:41down from the temple wall on the ground, right?
- 30:44Huge stones because the Romans, literally, they, they took it.
- 30:47They took it down one stone upon another to get the gold out of
- 30:50it. All right, so let's.
- 30:54Let's go to Daniel 9. We got to finish the thought.
- 31:00Here on this one. So I'm going to skip some.
- 31:06Of Daniel 9 and we'll get we'll get the one part of it I'll fill
- 31:09you in so Daniel's praying he looks back at prophecy from
- 31:15Jeremiah and realizes that there's 70 years in Babylon that
- 31:19they were going to have to spend for forsaking the Sabbath, right
- 31:23So he's basically confessing his sins in the sins of the people
- 31:26to the Lord and at the end of that prayer and that's where
- 31:30we're going to pick up in verse 20 of.
- 31:33Daniel, Chapter 9. He says now while I was
- 31:36speaking, praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people,
- 31:39Israel. Now it's an interesting thing
- 31:41because Daniel, he's one of the, we know Daniel had sin, but he's
- 31:43one of the people in the Bible that there's no mention of sin
- 31:46of Daniel, right. And you'll see that where God
- 31:48calls him greatly beloved, but we know he had sin because
- 31:50Christ is only one without it. But very interesting that you
- 31:53see that there. He's presenting my supplication
- 31:56before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God.
- 31:58Yes, while speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen
- 32:02in the vision at the beginning being caused if I swiftly to
- 32:05reach reach me about the time of the evening offering.
- 32:08And he informed me and talked with me and said, Oh, Daniel, I
- 32:11have now come forth to give you skill to understand at the
- 32:14beginning of your supplications. The command went out and I've
- 32:16come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved.
- 32:19Therefore, consider the matter and understand the vision.
- 32:22So I'm going to try to go through this pretty quick
- 32:24because we won't have too much time.
- 32:26So it says 70 weeks are determined for your people and
- 32:29for your holy city. So this prophecy is for your
- 32:32people and your holy city. Speaking to Daniel, it's talking
- 32:34about the Jews. This is not a prophecy on the
- 32:36Gentiles. This is a prophecy on the Jews
- 32:39in Jerusalem. It says to finish transgression.
- 32:42So you're going to see six things listed here.
- 32:44The first three are the first coming of Christ.
- 32:47The second three are the second coming of Christ.
- 32:49It says to finish the transgressions, to make an end
- 32:52of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity.
- 32:54And that's what Christ did for us on the cross, right?
- 32:57You finished a transgression, ended sin and made
- 32:59reconciliation. And then here's the second
- 33:02coming to bring in everlasting righteousness.
- 33:04So this is one that have a hard time where people say that we're
- 33:07living in the millennial reign right now because I don't see
- 33:10everlasting righteousness in the world.
- 33:12I don't see everything under under Christ right now.
- 33:16When he comes back, we're going to see that.
- 33:18But I don't see that right now. And Satan still seems like he's
- 33:22not bound. So we'll we'll continue on.
- 33:25So seal a vision and prophecy. I think there's some outstanding
- 33:28prophecy. I don't think Christ has
- 33:29returned yet, unless someone can tell me otherwise.
- 33:32And to anoint the most holy, it says this is part of where we're
- 33:36going to see our verse here today in Luke.
- 33:37It says no, therefore and understand that from the going
- 33:40forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem.
- 33:43So this is not about building the temple, which you're going
- 33:46to see in Ezra. And we don't have time to get in
- 33:47all these verses, but the command the build and restore
- 33:50Jerusalem was a Nehemiah 2 and approximately like 445 BC from a
- 33:55hazardous says until the Messiah the Prince, there shall be 7
- 33:59weeks and 62 weeks. So 69 of those 70 weeks is the
- 34:04time period from that command until Jesus walks into
- 34:07Jerusalem. And the street shall be built
- 34:11again. In the wall, even in trouble
- 34:13sometimes that's in Nehemiah, if you want to go read that.
- 34:16They had a lot of trouble rebuilding the walls and streets
- 34:18of Jerusalem and says after 62 weeks, so there's already been
- 34:22seven weeks and now after another 62, so we're at week 69.
- 34:28The Messiah shall be cut. Off, but not for himself.
- 34:33So a lot of people have looked. At this the 70 weeks or
- 34:37seven-year, so it's 70 * 7 four, 190 years when you go through
- 34:42this prophecy and we'll we'll continue on here.
- 34:45So you have 490 years. We fulfilled 483 of it until the
- 34:50coming of Christ, right? So when you read that in Luke
- 34:5319, it says for in this year day what we've had for you, the
- 34:57peace I've had you, you should have known, right?
- 34:59You should have known the time that I was coming to you because
- 35:01I told you 483 years ago, or yeah, I told you 4 and 83 years
- 35:06ago when I was going to arrive on the scene.
- 35:08But you didn't see it, right? And there's some people and
- 35:11there's some books out there. I think it's called The Coming
- 35:14Prince. And he does his calculation.
- 35:17He says it that Jesus would have if it was March 14th, 445 BC,
- 35:21when the hazardous gave that command that he would arrived
- 35:24on, let me see here, 32 AD, April 6th, which is really
- 35:27close. Now you can argue that date
- 35:29where it's 30 AD 33 or whatever, but it's really close.
- 35:32And you have to remember when you go do this, the Jewish
- 35:34calendar is 360 days, not 365. There's a lot of different
- 35:38calendars out there. So it's not as easy as it looks
- 35:41just taking 365 * 43 and getting there.
- 35:45So there's a little bit more than that.
- 35:48But what Jesus is telling them, they.
- 35:49Should have known it, right? So let's continue the prophecy
- 35:53because it also goes into what we have today.
- 35:56And after 62 weeks, Messiah shall be cut off, but not for
- 35:59himself. And the people of the Prince who
- 36:01is to come shall destroy the city in the sanctuary.
- 36:04So we already know that who destroyed the city in the
- 36:07sanctuary? It was the Romans.
- 36:09And then it says the people, the Prince who is to come.
- 36:11And a lot of people believe this is the Antichrist descended from
- 36:14the line of Rome, Rome. But Rome had a vast area.
- 36:17So good guess on who exactly that may be right?
- 36:21They had a lot of territory. The Babylon in six O 5 BC.
- 36:26So this is somewhere in the neighborhood of like 530 ish BC
- 36:30520 something BC. He's already prophesying that
- 36:33there's a second temple in Jerusalem before the 2nd temple
- 36:36is even wiped out. All right, it's not even built
- 36:39yet until until the end of the war.
- 36:41Desolations are determined. It says then he shall confirm a
- 36:45covenant with many for one week. And this is the Antichrist in
- 36:48that last seven-year period that with the timetable is going to
- 36:51go back to the Jews, right? Because right now we're living
- 36:54in the acceptable year of the Lord.
- 36:59So that's that 483. To 490 that's left, it says.
- 37:02But in the middle of the week, he shall bring an end to
- 37:04sacrifice and offering. So when you see people talking
- 37:07about 1/3 temple, you might be wondering, why do people think
- 37:10there's going to be a third temple?
- 37:11It's because right here, because in order to have sacrifice and
- 37:14offering for the Jews, they have to have a third temple, right?
- 37:18And for the Antichrist to cut that off, there must be one
- 37:21there. And it says on the wing of
- 37:23abomination shall be one who makes desolate even until the
- 37:26consummation which is determined is poured out on the desolate.
- 37:29So let's go back to Luke here. So we'll start getting towards
- 37:33the end. And I mentioned before I.
- 37:50Belabored going going through some of that just because I
- 37:54think it's important for you to know that everything that the
- 37:57Bible says is true. If you go back and look at those
- 37:59prophecies, it happened exactly how God said it would happen.
- 38:04And there's people out there and critics like to say no, Daniel
- 38:07was written, you know, 100 BC or 200.
- 38:10He still said the sanctuary is going to be sacked in 70AD,
- 38:13right? He still prophesied when Christ
- 38:15was going to arrive and they found that his prophecies they
- 38:20are dated back to that time period is 500 BC plus.
- 38:29You know, going back to the Jewish people.
- 38:31And I mentioned before about Romans 11 that blindness has
- 38:34come to them until the fullness of the Gentiles is brought in.
- 38:38And then you see again in Luke 21, it talks about Jerusalem's
- 38:40going to be trampled by Gentiles until the time of the Gentiles
- 38:43are fulfilled. I mean, it's really hard not to
- 38:48say God's on his own timetable with things, right?
- 38:50He's given us numbers and dates and things are when it's going
- 38:52to happen. He knows, you know, it might not
- 38:54be our time. It's his time.
- 38:56And you think about where we are right now.
- 38:58We're in a generation where 100 years ago there was no nation of
- 39:02Israel to look at. There was no, you say you would
- 39:04read these and you'd be like, huh, like, what does that mean?
- 39:07It must be the church, right? But God has not replaced Israel
- 39:11with the church. If you go read Romans 910 and
- 39:1411, you'll see that in there in Isaiah 66, A, it says, can a
- 39:21nation be born in one day? Speaking of Israel, right,
- 39:24that's where you see in May 14th, 1948, the nation of Israel
- 39:27was declared a state again, right?
- 39:29A country which came out of nowhere, right?
- 39:32You never would have thought all these Jewish people from all
- 39:34over the world would not be gathered back.
- 39:36And I think there's seven, some million of them there.
- 39:38So we live in some interesting times, right?
- 39:41I think everyone's like, oh, that you hear that phrase out
- 39:45there, We've never been closer to the coming of Christ, right?
- 39:48And it's true because actually passes, you're getting closer.
- 39:51But I think our generation, we've literally never been
- 39:54closer to the coming of Christ. We have the nation of Israel
- 39:57sitting in their land. You see other prophecies in
- 40:00Daniel where it talks about people going to and fro
- 40:02throughout the whole earth and knowledge is going to greatly
- 40:04increase. I mean, what age do people say
- 40:07we live in, right? It's the information age.
- 40:10We have AI and data centers and all this crazy stuff going on.
- 40:13You can't tell what's real and what's fake anymore.
- 40:23So if the worship team wants to come.
- 40:25Forward here, I'll begin to wrap up.
- 40:26We're going to do a brief about the verse 45 and 48 for the
- 40:30temple here for cleansing of the temple.
- 40:32And it says in verse 45. Then he went into the temple and
- 40:36began to drive those out who bought and sold.
- 40:38And it's saying to them, it is written, my house is a House of
- 40:41prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.
- 40:43And he was teaching daily in the temple.
- 40:45But the chief priests and the scribes and the leaders of the
- 40:47people sought to destroy him and weren't were unable to do
- 40:50anything, for all the people were very attentive to hear him.
- 40:55So there's there's a lot. That can be said about what was
- 40:58going on in the court of the Gentiles and the Temple during
- 41:01that time. So what it was, you had all the
- 41:04money changers and in the courtyard, right?
- 41:07People will come in with their currency from out outside and
- 41:10they say, no, you have to use the our currency here.
- 41:13So they basically RIP you off. You go to another country,
- 41:15they're going to charge you more to get their currency.
- 41:17It might take a little bit. So they're had some exuberant
- 41:20taxes basically to get the right coinage to be able to purchase
- 41:24things in the temple courtyard. And then they were selling
- 41:26animals because you would show up with your animal and they
- 41:29say, Nope, that's not good. Has spots and blemishes, right?
- 41:32And they'd be like, here, you have to buy one from us.
- 41:34So now they're making people, when they're robbing them,
- 41:36they're literally robbing them of their money, right?
- 41:39And they're taking away the connection that the people have
- 41:41to their sacrifice for their atonement, right?
- 41:43So it just becomes a ritual of them.
- 41:45It's just a thing they do. Hey, I can pay for it.
- 41:47You just pay for it, right? It doesn't affect you at all.
- 41:51What was that doing to Israel right?
- 41:52Is destroying their witness right that court of the Gentiles
- 41:56was supposed to be an area where they could come in and see the
- 41:58God of Israel, right? The one who brought them out of
- 42:01Egypt and see who he was but it. Was a den of thieves.
- 42:06You know, First Corinthians 6 says, do you not know that your
- 42:09bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you
- 42:12have received from God? You are not your own, for you
- 42:16were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your
- 42:19body and in your spirit, which are gods.
- 42:24If you're here today and listening, if you allowed sin to
- 42:26come into areas of your life, it's it's slowly going to
- 42:29destroy you. You know the.
- 42:32Bible says what do light. And darkness have in common.
- 42:34If you're backsliding and living in sin, you might look really OK
- 42:37on the outside, but I guarantee you, you feel empty on the
- 42:40inside. If all you have to do is get
- 42:44back with. Jesus and he'll come into you,
- 42:46He'll cleanse you just like you did the temple, and he'll take
- 42:48that sin and remove it. But when you start spending less
- 42:51time with Jesus and more time with the world, you're not going
- 42:54to be in a good situation. And for those, if you don't know
- 42:58Christ today and you can't stop the fooling around, the
- 43:01drunkenness, the anger, the lying, stealing or whatever type
- 43:04of sin may be controlling your life, you know, you're
- 43:08completely empty inside. You might have a lot of social
- 43:10media followers and look like everything's pretty dandy on
- 43:13there. I mean, for the young kids, if
- 43:15anyone's listening, social media is really fake.
- 43:18Everything you see on there is not real.
- 43:19It might be real. The picture, even some of those
- 43:21pictures are fake because people just want likes.
- 43:24What you see on there is not real Life, OK?
- 43:30But if if you're that. Empty inside.
- 43:31You can't fix it on your own. You see a lot of self help
- 43:34books, they get you through something, but what do you see
- 43:36on the other side? A lot of people relapse, they go
- 43:38back into it, right, because they can't do it on their own.
- 43:40But. What does Christ promised?
- 43:43Us, if you accept him as your Savior, it says the Holy Spirit,
- 43:46he's going to come into you, He's going to cleanse you and
- 43:48he's going to give you a new heart.
- 43:50He's going to give you peace that passes all understanding.
- 43:53All you have to do is invite. Him in and you have that peace
- 43:56that you've never had before. So as we look at taking.
- 44:03Communion here. For revealing yourself.
- 44:21To us, Lord, through many prophecies and Lord even going
- 44:25to look back at history and see the time, the very manner and
- 44:28our Lord, the day that you would arrive in the Jerusalem.
- 44:31Father for our own benefits so we can look back and understand
- 44:34that what you were telling us is real.
- 44:36It's not a favorable. It's not something that someone
- 44:38just came up with. Lord, we can believe that this
- 44:41word that we have here today is true, Lord.
- 44:44And we know when you say that if we confess with our mouth, Lord,
- 44:47and leave in our heart and you, Lord, that you will save us from
- 44:50our sins, Father. Lord, we just thank you.
- 44:53For this time today, Lord, I pray that you would bless those
- 44:56who are here today. Lord in Jesus name, Amen.
- 45:00All right, it. Says on the night he.
- 45:02Was betrayed. He took the bread and we had
- 45:04given thanks. He broke it and said this is my
- 45:07body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.
- 45:28Says in the same way after. Supper He took the cup, saying,
- 45:31This cup is a new coven in my blood.
- 45:33Do this whenever you drink it in remembrance of me.
- 45:42Says whenever you eat this. Bread and drink this cup.
- 45:44You proclaim the Lord's death until he comes again, and
- 45:48that's. What it's all about right we're.
- 45:49Looking forward to the Lord coming again, and we know, we
- 45:53know he's going to come again soon.
