- 0:00Welcome to Unspoken Career Truths.
- 0:02I'm Lauren Levac Gilbert. And I'm Kyra Wood.
- 0:06And we're here to be the Co workers you can trust.
- 0:09In just 10 minutes, we'll cover the strategies you need, the
- 0:12mistakes to avoid, and the insider secrets no one tells you
- 0:16so you can show up with confidence at work.
- 0:19We are here for wisdom under fire, Woo.
- 0:23Hoo, my favorite, can't wait. Well, we are talking about
- 0:28follow your passion, or as Lauren wanted to call it, do
- 0:33what you love and you'll never work a day in your life.
- 0:36So let's talk about if this is advice you've gotten, if it's
- 0:40good advice, if it's worked for you, if it's failed for you.
- 0:44What do you think? 1st, we should start kind of
- 0:47with the origin of the phrase. If you Google this, which is
- 0:51what I did to find the origin of the phrase, I'm very sorry to
- 0:54all of the librarians listening. It actually comes up like
- 0:58attributed to a lot of different people.
- 1:01Could you just Mark Twain, Mark Anthony?
- 1:04So I think we can just safely say that this concept.
- 1:08Mark Anthony, the Roman, not the singer.
- 1:11Just want to clarify. Thank you.
- 1:13Thank you, Mark. Anthony the Roman.
- 1:17So we're talking Confucius, We're talking Marc.
- 1:20Anthony the Roman. We could just kind of safely say
- 1:23that this phrase has been around for a long time.
- 1:28Yeah, I mean, I don't know about you, Cara, but I have heard this
- 1:31so many times. I think my father said it a
- 1:33bunch of times. I've heard it from advisors,
- 1:37from people tossing it around, or when you complain about work
- 1:41or you're like, oh, I love this or I love that.
- 1:44I mean, Are you ready for my hot take, Cara?
- 1:47Yeah, I'm ready for your hot take.
- 1:50A job is still a job and work is still work.
- 1:53Like I do believe that you can love your job and and I, I do
- 1:58love my job. I've loved a lot of my past
- 2:00jobs, but at the end of the day, it's still a job.
- 2:04And I think I, I think it's really important to make sure
- 2:10that your identity is not necessarily tied to it.
- 2:12So the whole do what you love and you'll never work a day in
- 2:15their life like you're still working.
- 2:17It's still a job. There's still expectations, you
- 2:19still have someone to answer to. So you can love your job and you
- 2:22can be happy, but you're still working.
- 2:24That's my that's my hot take. I think that's fair and I'm so
- 2:28conflicted in this one. You talked about kind of hearing
- 2:31this from an early age. One of the first people to say
- 2:34this to me is my uncle, who runs his own business.
- 2:38And he just swears by the fact that he's like, I just found the
- 2:42thing that I love. It's impossible to hear him talk
- 2:46about it without feeling caught up in how magical He's a
- 2:51videographer. This, you know, his career in
- 2:53videography has been. I have also seen him, you know,
- 2:56frustrated in hard days. And he works weekends a lot, see
- 2:59videos, people's weddings. You know, it's, it's a tough
- 3:02job. It's a job, but he loves it.
- 3:04He really sells this idea. But I'm conflicted because like
- 3:08you, I've seen how often you can just have bad days at work.
- 3:13You can still, you can love aspects of your work.
- 3:15You can have your work change depending on who you're doing it
- 3:18with and who's around you and or what you're doing it for and in
- 3:21what cause. So there's so many ways that
- 3:24this can pivot that it, it's a really complicated 1 and I'm,
- 3:30I'm kind of excited if people have reactions or, you know,
- 3:33things. One thing that inspired me to to
- 3:37pick this as a wisdom under fire for us to debate though, is that
- 3:41there is a little bit of psychological research that does
- 3:46say when you choose something that's large and you know you
- 3:51can drive towards, you're actually more apartment to
- 3:56achieve something. Even if you don't achieve the
- 3:59big hairy audacious goal that you initially set.
- 4:02It's inspiring enough that the people who set really big goals
- 4:06are the ones who are more likely to follow through on something.
- 4:09And that intrigued me. And I think it's connected to
- 4:11this idea of like, follow your passion.
- 4:14And I just have to say, Cara, I feel like we've flipped the
- 4:16script because I'm usually the one on wisdom under fire, which
- 4:19is like, I believe it, but I don't.
- 4:21And this one I'm like in One Direction and you're flip
- 4:24floppy. So let's all look.
- 4:25All that out. There.
- 4:27I'm all over the place on this one.
- 4:30I'm glad we're flipping the script because usually I'm like,
- 4:32well, maybe I. Don't know.
- 4:36Yeah. Well, and I, I think in part
- 4:38it's because I am a writer and it's something fiction writing
- 4:44you just, you just do it. You actually, you would do it if
- 4:48you didn't get paid. A lot of people do it.
- 4:50I know I'm not paid to do it. And so there's something already
- 4:53that drives me that I'm super passionate about.
- 4:56And but does that work, right? Exactly.
- 4:59Is that work? And there are people who argue
- 5:02that when you take on like you said it too, like, well, this
- 5:05thing that you do, does it define you too much?
- 5:08Or is it something that once you do it as work, then does it feel
- 5:13like pressure or work? And does that change your
- 5:16relationship with it? So there's so many questions
- 5:18that I have, I don't know if we'll answer them on this wisdom
- 5:21under fire, but that's why I feel so conflicted about Follow
- 5:25your back. I get it.
- 5:26I, I, I totally get it. I get your perspective.
- 5:31Yeah. So I think, I guess what is our,
- 5:34what is your advice, Lauren, kind of when someone is trying
- 5:39to figure out what to do with their career, like I know that
- 5:42you've worked in counseling. I would love to hear sort of how
- 5:46do you navigate giving people advice on how to choose what to
- 5:49do at different points in their career?
- 5:53Well, so you hit on my college admissions career life.
- 5:56So that was my first career. I've had many different careers,
- 5:58but I always used to say to students, because it's really
- 6:01hard, like freshman year of college, like picking a major,
- 6:04I'm like, this does not determine the rest of your life
- 6:07like and you have time to change your mind.
- 6:10And for for college students specifically, I would always say
- 6:14like learn life skills and learn like how you operate in certain
- 6:21different scenarios and learn more about yourself.
- 6:23The major stuff doesn't really apply.
- 6:25Like I was a journalism and dance major and I'm an
- 6:27e-commerce like who would have ever expected that?
- 6:30So I think my advice overall is just understand what drives you
- 6:36and make sure that you are in a career or a job that complements
- 6:41that, right? Like for example, I was talking
- 6:43to someone the other day and they were like, I love data and
- 6:46analytics. Like I could sit in spreadsheets
- 6:48like all day long that would make my eyes bleed, right?
- 6:51Like so just know yourself and know like what environment makes
- 6:55you thrive, what your values are and try to match that into your
- 7:00career. And then you will love what you
- 7:02do, which which is great, but it also takes time to figure that
- 7:05out. And if you do something that you
- 7:07don't like, that's great information because you know you
- 7:10don't like it. Yeah, and that that makes a lot
- 7:14of sense. I feel like, and I know we've
- 7:15talked about sort of like jungle gym careers before another
- 7:19episodes or another episode. I and I, I think that's right.
- 7:25I feel like it's really easy at the start of something,
- 7:29especially when you're first picking a major that a, you feel
- 7:32like you are committing to not just a job, but an identity or
- 7:36like what you care about and finding the things around what
- 7:42you care about or the things that also motivate you.
- 7:45So you might, you know, want to be a doctor, but is that because
- 7:48you're someone who likes the data analysis of diagnostics or
- 7:52is that because you're someone who wants to cure people?
- 7:55Like those are two different drivers that if you understand
- 7:59those, which one of those things you might fit into that would
- 8:03actually help you kind of drive your career forward and again,
- 8:07make you passionate, make you set those really exciting goals
- 8:11that will like further and give you energy to kind of show up to
- 8:14work not exhausted. I love the doctor example
- 8:17because I have a good friend who went to school for medicine,
- 8:20went to Med school and then saw like blood and like a really
- 8:25kind of gross scenario and was like, Nope, this isn't for me.
- 8:28And was able to pivot and is totally fine.
- 8:30But like, you know, you're going to have those moments where you
- 8:34might think one thing, but it leads you in another direction
- 8:37and that's OK. And that's what's supposed to
- 8:39happen. So just embrace those moments.
- 8:42Yeah. What are some signs that either
- 8:44like things are clicking for you or and you are satisfied in your
- 8:49job and you're just having a bad day?
- 8:51And what's the sort of red flags like actually this career?
- 8:54I need to rethink it. I mean for me, and I think it
- 8:59can be different for everyone, but for me, I would say like I'm
- 9:01excited to get up and go to work everyday.
- 9:03Like I'm not dreading, I call it Sunday scary's.
- 9:06Like I'm not having Sunday scary's for Monday, right?
- 9:08Like I'm excited about new projects.
- 9:11Like I'm willing to raise my hand to do different things.
- 9:13Like I think for me, those are kind of the signals and one
- 9:17other point I want to make, and I want to hear yours as well.
- 9:19Cara is it's a privilege to be able to follow your passion.
- 9:23I just want to be clear about that because I think a lot of
- 9:26people might have a passion that maybe might not pay the bills
- 9:29and they need to do that for their family and that's amazing.
- 9:32And that's OK. And maybe there's other ways
- 9:35that you can fulfill that passion.
- 9:36So I also just wanted to state that because sometimes not
- 9:40everyone is able to fully follow their passion in the way they
- 9:43want because they have other responsibilities and like that
- 9:47makes sense. 100% And I think it's also again like there's the
- 9:54follow your passion and then there's the like be happy at
- 9:57work. And so there are jobs that
- 9:59people take and then they find the values in them.
- 10:02I read some study where actually janitors who work at either
- 10:07schools or hospitals are often happier than janitors in other
- 10:10places. And it's literally just because
- 10:12when you're cleaning up at a hospital, you can really see the
- 10:15impact that you're making on everyone's health and
- 10:17well-being. When you're cleaning up at
- 10:18schools, you can see the impact that you're having on children.
- 10:21Like they're both just, you know, they're not still not fun
- 10:23places to clean up, but they're like places that you get to see
- 10:27the impact that the institution you work for is having on
- 10:29people's lives. But you're right, it is a
- 10:33totally privileged situation to kind of sit back and think, what
- 10:36am I going to do, follow my passion?
- 10:38We talked about college already, like people picking majors.
- 10:41There's plenty of people that don't go to school and then
- 10:44they're just kind of picking what is available in their area
- 10:47or what things like also spark excitement for them.
- 10:52Cara, what are your signs of like, being, feeling, feeling
- 10:56passionate, work or feeling fulfilled?
- 10:58Yeah. For me, I feel like I like to
- 11:01always know that I have more to learn.
- 11:03So and I've had like someone has said to me before, I like, OK,
- 11:07if you are the smartest person in the room or you think you're
- 11:10the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room.
- 11:12And so to me, having a job where I'm learning from the people
- 11:16around me or my industry's changing and I'm learning from
- 11:19that, or I get you already talked about like getting to
- 11:22start new projects. So I'm happy when those things
- 11:25are happening and when they're not, then it's sort of time for
- 11:28me to like look elsewhere or to challenge myself and say, where
- 11:32do I want to go next? And I think what's exciting is
- 11:35that this is different for everyone.
- 11:37I've definitely had colleagues who say actually, like, I don't
- 11:41want my job to be my passion. I have family that I care about.
- 11:45And this, the fact that my job is a nine to five job or
- 11:48contained hours is the best thing about my job.
- 11:50And that is totally fine. So to recap, I mean there are
- 11:55practical things like earning potential, cost of living,
- 11:58market forces that all play a role in choosing your career.
- 12:01So I think we are both in alignment that you can't always
- 12:04follow your passion and then but there is some evidence that you
- 12:08know, setting big long term goals actually does lead to
- 12:12better outcome. So find the things, reflect on
- 12:15what works and inspires you. And you know, you have to kind
- 12:20of know what your needs are, what your tendencies are, what's
- 12:23gonna fulfill you. But then be audacious where you
- 12:26can, because we all sort of aspire for that, you know,
- 12:29pursuit of happiness, that pursuit of belonging.
- 12:32And know yourself. And I'm gonna leave it at that.
- 12:35And that's a wrap. Thanks for joining us on
