- 0:00Welcome to Raising the Curth, a podcast designed to teach you everything you need to know
- 0:05to be better with your money.
- 0:07And the wise words of Amy Schumer were slipping carrots into the brownie recipe.
- 0:11I don't really get the saying.
- 0:14It's kind of like eating vegetables that actually taste good.
- 0:17You know, I'm like, still not ready to eat.
- 0:19Are you on the script?
- 0:21It's basically like saying, investing in finance can be boring, but it totally doesn't
- 0:26need to be.
- 0:27OK, OK, so we're making it fun by putting the carrot.
- 0:31OK, the vegetables are just good for you.
- 0:33It's the brownie recipe.
- 0:35OK, we got there, we got there.
- 0:36OK, OK.
- 0:37Well, you've really got a finance mate.
- 0:39Yeah, one of us has to.
- 0:40This is a joke.
- 0:41OK, come and learn alongside me from Vick Harris, ex-fun manager.
- 0:45Well, I'm going to ask all the questions that you wish you could.
- 0:48And I'm going to be eating all the brownie you wish you could.
- 0:51No, that's so not the joke, Vick.
- 0:54OK, just come and talk and learn and laugh with us.
- 0:56Because together, we really can raise the curve.
- 1:01So, yes, we've been here for a couple of months now.
- 1:06And we have not yet done a podcast on our London experience.
- 1:11I know.
- 1:12We've literally been head down, bum up, working our little tutsis off.
- 1:16It's crazy how fast time has gone.
- 1:18I know.
- 1:19You know, when you're having fun, having fun working hard,
- 1:22it's like the classic, what's it work hard play hard?
- 1:25I think that's what we're doing.
- 1:26Yeah, burning the candle both ends.
- 1:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:29And then it's like, help, I'm dying.
- 1:32It's been an interesting experience, because I think culturally,
- 1:35the UK and New Zealand are really similar.
- 1:38Yes, really similar sense of humour.
- 1:40I don't know.
- 1:41Like, just, everyone thinks I'm funny.
- 1:44Everyone thinks I'm funny because I'm from New Zealand.
- 1:46No, I just think, I don't know.
- 1:48They get us.
- 1:49Yeah, I think they love Kiwis and we love them.
- 1:52Yeah, it's a reciprocal relationship.
- 1:54We're all part of the commonwealth.
- 1:55You know, there's a bit of home here.
- 1:57All hell lookling.
- 1:58King.
- 2:00Oh, God.
- 2:02Today we were in a meeting with this insurance company.
- 2:04And it was like, it was fine.
- 2:07Like, the meeting was fine.
- 2:08But then they were like, oh, who's your meeting with tomorrow?
- 2:11Because we told them we had a meeting with like another insurance company.
- 2:14And I'd opened the wrong day and I had the meeting name.
- 2:17And I go, oh, yeah, yeah, so and so and so.
- 2:20And then the guy who's the COO and like,
- 2:22CEO and founder of this company was like, oh, no, that's me.
- 2:25And we'd been in this meeting for like 45 minutes.
- 2:28It was quiet.
- 2:29And I was just like, he didn't my hand going, oh, my God.
- 2:31I should start to like, back kid all on us.
- 2:34Like, oh, it was, I mean, like, oh, it was just such a foot in mouth.
- 2:36And I think up until that point, they were like, oh, the Kiwis love these girls.
- 2:40I mean, I mean, I mean, just totally show.
- 2:43It's okay.
- 2:44You know?
- 2:45You can't be great all the time.
- 2:47You lose something.
- 2:48Just not even I've seen the time would be great.
- 2:49Thank you.
- 2:51Anyway, so we're going to run through today some of our learnings,
- 2:56our experiences, what we like, what we don't like, money related ones,
- 3:01non-money related ones, dating ones, non-diving ones.
- 3:06Yeah, so it's going to be a fun time.
- 3:09So we've got a little list.
- 3:10I don't mind like a reflection when I was riding all these down.
- 3:13I feel quite good to think about it.
- 3:14Yeah.
- 3:14Because otherwise you're just unconsciously living your life and spending money
- 3:18and doing all the stuff and not actually riding it down.
- 3:20Because normally I journal, but I've been too busy for that.
- 3:24Too busy.
- 3:24Too busy.
- 3:25But then you do stuff like you say the wrong names and medics
- 3:28and you think, shit, I need to get back to the journal.
- 3:30Yes, yes.
- 3:31So do you want to go first?
- 3:32You can do, should we do like a money related, non-money related?
- 3:36You know, both in me.
- 3:37Yeah, but we both do a money one and then we both do a non-money one.
- 3:40Okay.
- 3:40Okay.
- 3:41Well, I'm going to start with the price of coffee.
- 3:46Yeah.
- 3:48Honestly, today this morning I got an oat flat white and I know I shouldn't be doing this like
- 3:55transferring pounds to New Zealand dollars on my head.
- 3:58But I'm earning New Zealand dollars, so it's kind of hard.
- 4:00But I ordered an oat flat white and it was £4.73.
- 4:07Which is the three by the way.
- 4:09I feel like there was some like tax or something like that.
- 4:12I, that is nearly $10 for a coffee.
- 4:17No.
- 4:18And it's disgusting.
- 4:20I almost wanted to say something, but then I was like, what am I going to say?
- 4:22Your exchange rates too high, though.
- 4:24It was honestly.
- 4:26I, but yeah, it wasn't until I'd ordered it, started drinking it and then had to pay for it.
- 4:30So it was almost like, you know when you get a haircut and you're like,
- 4:32oh, so expensive, it was too late.
- 4:34So I had a, I've had this weird obsession start lately and I think it's a
- 4:38combination of being time pour over here.
- 4:40But also the person I'm living with loves it.
- 4:42It's cold marches from Starbucks, which is a bizarre habit to get into this morning in a meeting.
- 4:49And I was like, is it, either it's a green smoothie that you've put in a Starbucks cup?
- 4:53No, no, the cup.
- 4:54No, it's just weird.
- 4:55I bought one.
- 4:56Yeah.
- 4:56I bought one and I went across it at 7.30 this morning and not even having had a show yet
- 5:01and got one and then went back to my meetings.
- 5:03And I just thought, this is, this is, do you get like cream on top?
- 5:06No, but my point is is that it was still, it was like 4.30 or something for a small.
- 5:10And I can't just say, this is not happening.
- 5:12I think the hardest thing is we keep translating it back to New Zealand dollars,
- 5:17which I mean, for, even $4.70 for a coffee is expensive.
- 5:22Yeah.
- 5:22Then you double it and you're like, then you've got to double it.
- 5:24But I was like, wow, I really need to start making more coffees at home.
- 5:28Okay, my one is I would have thought that public transport
- 5:34because there's so many people in the city and it's so well established.
- 5:38Like if you've seen a tube map, it is like a spider web.
- 5:42It's, it is, I'm pretty sure they won like a design award for how amazing the map is.
- 5:47Anyway, you would think, oh, there's 5,000 people on this tube.
- 5:52Surely this is going to cost me 25 cents.
- 5:54No, it's unbelievable.
- 5:57I'm pretty sure I spent 17 pounds on public transport the other day.
- 6:01Yeah.
- 6:02But there's no other way to get around.
- 6:03I know, and like that's the thing.
- 6:04It's like God gave me legs.
- 6:06But can I be bothered walking two hours to a meeting?
- 6:08No.
- 6:08Also, Lyme's very expensive.
- 6:11Lyme's, yeah.
- 6:12I was spending $10 to Lyme for four minutes down the road.
- 6:15Use your legs, girl.
- 6:16I know, but the problem is we all know I'm never really early for a meeting.
- 6:19So that's what I was like, you need to buy an umbrella.
- 6:22It's not a raining today and I was like, so if you need to buy an umbrella,
- 6:24you're in London in summertime.
- 6:26It's going to rain.
- 6:27It's like Auckland in summer.
- 6:28You know, it's going to rain.
- 6:29It's like bought an umbrella from New Zealand.
- 6:31Like, who does that?
- 6:32Who is that organist?
- 6:33It's tiny.
- 6:34It's tiny.
- 6:35But just honestly, it's like a $5 umbrella.
- 6:36Why would you not just buy one here?
- 6:38It's so weird.
- 6:39We are financially educating.
- 6:40Yeah, you're right.
- 6:41Okay.
- 6:42Non-finance related one.
- 6:43Oh, the British accent.
- 6:46Makes me weak in the knees.
- 6:48I stand in a queue and like hear it.
- 6:50And I'm just like, and then you turn around,
- 6:52it's always kind of a disappointment.
- 6:53But still, it's like, if it was a Kiwi accent,
- 6:56it would be like a real disappointment.
- 6:57True, true.
- 6:57You know, everyone's just 10 times higher.
- 6:59And so like, what I got there?
- 7:00Yeah.
- 7:01I mean, if you just took a look.
- 7:04In the dark, in the dark.
- 7:05Yeah.
- 7:06It's so sexy.
- 7:07But also just really calming and beautiful.
- 7:10It's like ASMR.
- 7:12Yeah.
- 7:12Just keep talking, put me just like.
- 7:13Yeah.
- 7:14Exactly.
- 7:14Even like, would you like a coffee?
- 7:15I'm like, yes.
- 7:16I'll pay for what I was simply through.
- 7:18For Pouncy Ruth.
- 7:19So we're getting financially fucked over
- 7:21because the accent is so cute.
- 7:23Will I fall taken?
- 7:24I'll take that.
- 7:25Okay.
- 7:25What is my non-finance related one?
- 7:28I eat way more unhealthy over here
- 7:31because I'm always in a hurry
- 7:32and everything is, I need it to be convenient.
- 7:35Yes.
- 7:35So you'll find me with like a rapid hand from M and S,
- 7:38which is like the, you know, pre-made,
- 7:40they have heaps of pre-made stuff.
- 7:41Or, I'll just go, like I'm very much like,
- 7:44oh, I'll eat well while messaging and calling
- 7:47and screeching along the road trying to get to a meeting.
- 7:50You know, I just find myself in New Zealand time
- 7:53as much slower as like, I don't know,
- 7:55just like an easier pace to keep up with.
- 7:57Whereas here, I'm, and also I'm always out
- 8:00so I'm hardly ever cooking at home.
- 8:02Yeah.
- 8:02And I think you also end up paying more
- 8:05because you're paying for convenience.
- 8:06Not only unhealthy, but it's, yeah, you're paying more.
- 8:08Thanks.
- 8:09So there's how, like if I was looking
- 8:10through my statements the other day,
- 8:12and I reckon if I was just to fast for three days,
- 8:14I would save 300 pounds.
- 8:16Yeah.
- 8:17I guess been so much money on food.
- 8:18We're not encouraging that, no, no, no, no, no.
- 8:21But you haven't noticed that you look great though.
- 8:22Thank you so much.
- 8:23Yeah.
- 8:24My money related one would be,
- 8:28I thought Pilates was expensive in New Zealand.
- 8:32Holy Jesus, sorry.
- 8:33Is there like $60 for a Pilates session?
- 8:36It wild.
- 8:37Yes.
- 8:38I was like, you know what, this brings me joy.
- 8:41You know this is good for my body.
- 8:43But even I'm just, wow, yeah, every time it makes you go
- 8:46because I'm definitely not missing a class
- 8:48because it was so bloody expensive.
- 8:50Yeah, so it's like 30 pounds of class for a one-off,
- 8:54which is $60.
- 8:57And again, it's not converting, but it's so annoying.
- 9:00It just, yeah, stabs you in the guts for fun.
- 9:02It makes hanging tight booty difficult.
- 9:04I know.
- 9:04Maybe I need to start running, but I'm just,
- 9:07God, it takes a lot for me to put my running shoes on
- 9:09and get out of that.
- 9:10Maybe you should run to the meetings,
- 9:11then you have time to eat, then you bit, yeah,
- 9:13but you'll be sweetie.
- 9:14I always end sweetie in meetings anyway.
- 9:17I was gonna start a montage of sorry arriving at meetings.
- 9:20I want to see it take show.
- 9:23And she's like glowy in the face and it's so weird.
- 9:25Yeah, she sure is quiet.
- 9:27I mean, she's like, I can use the bathroom in zero water,
- 9:29like I just need to see the,
- 9:30just need a few seconds to like decompress.
- 9:32It's so hilarious.
- 9:34Oh, God.
- 9:35I just think it doesn't matter how much time I leave.
- 9:37Like today, I left, I said to myself,
- 9:39I'm gonna arrive at quarter to one
- 9:41because I'm just, I can't deal with the trees
- 9:45if there's any more than me.
- 9:47Still?
- 9:48How far away are you?
- 9:48Still get there at the three past one.
- 9:50And it was so stressful and I just, I just can't.
- 9:53Anyway, my money related one actually is a positive.
- 9:57Yeah.
- 9:58No, actually I'm going for another negative.
- 10:00Everyone used to talk about flights is so cheap to Europe.
- 10:03You can't just hop on a plane and quickly pop
- 10:06over to Europe for $30.
- 10:07No, it's not.
- 10:08It flights to $600 return.
- 10:10It's anywhere.
- 10:11It's like, and when you want to go is the Friday night,
- 10:13Sunday nights, you know, that's when you want to travel,
- 10:15it's when everyone else wants to travel.
- 10:17It's like going to Queenstown in New Zealand.
- 10:20The Friday night and Sunday night prices
- 10:24are always the most expensive.
- 10:25It's the same here.
- 10:26Have you ever used to talk about it being super cheap?
- 10:28Yeah.
- 10:29I just want to set the record straight.
- 10:30It's not.
- 10:31I think it was cheap.
- 10:32Yeah.
- 10:32And then COVID and the world's a bit different these days.
- 10:37My non-money related is that nobody in London is up
- 10:42before about 9 a.m.
- 10:44And the weekends are 10 times worse.
- 10:47You are the earliest bird that has ever
- 10:50woken up in the whole world though.
- 10:51But it's light at like 5 a.m.
- 10:53It's nice.
- 10:54But you're still in anomaly.
- 10:56Yeah.
- 10:56And Vick's like, it's so weird.
- 10:58You know, soons are doesn't get to the gym
- 10:59till 10 in the morning.
- 11:00I'm like, it's not that weird, actually.
- 11:02But for you, that's just like, that's like four
- 11:04in the afternoon.
- 11:04Yeah.
- 11:05But then it also come 9 p.m.
- 11:06I'm like half asleep.
- 11:07Yeah.
- 11:08If someone messages something through for work
- 11:10at like, any minutes, past nine,
- 11:11I'm always like, Vick's asleep, don't worry about it.
- 11:13So I was like, oh, hey, but this one, because my colleague
- 11:15is not around.
- 11:16But it's annoying, because it means
- 11:17that I have to be up later.
- 11:19So I can't think it in the routine of getting up earlier.
- 11:21Yeah, maybe we should talk about this.
- 11:22Take this off.
- 11:23Yeah, we'll take this off later.
- 11:25OK, my non-money related.
- 11:29We've already touched on the accents.
- 11:30Mine was just I want to marry an Englishman.
- 11:32So probably, oh, I've got a good one.
- 11:34Being 30 is like the new 40 over here.
- 11:37Totally.
- 11:38It's so normal to not have to have the white pocket fence
- 11:43up with seven dogs, 15 children, be married.
- 11:47And like, do you know what I mean?
- 11:48I think over here, it's so acceptable to have a business
- 11:52or be single and going out on a Wednesday.
- 11:57Like all of that stuff is totally normal.
- 11:59And I think in New Zealand, we love you.
- 12:01But it's kind of frowned upon.
- 12:03If you're single at this age, people are like, why are you single?
- 12:06Someone sent you a DM saying, I can't why are you still single?
- 12:09Literally today.
- 12:11It's like, go away.
- 12:12We're choosing to be single, because we don't like anyone.
- 12:16You know, let it out.
- 12:17Sorry.
- 12:18Let it out.
- 12:19I'm just so sick of it.
- 12:20Evening on over the age of 55, it's like, I just...
- 12:22Oh, darling.
- 12:23Why are you not...
- 12:24Why are you not...
- 12:25You know, is there no one out there?
- 12:26I don't know.
- 12:27Oh, wait.
- 12:28It's ostracized in New Zealand, where it's here.
- 12:29It's less, much less so.
- 12:31And I think there's a lot more diversity
- 12:33and people doing different things.
- 12:35And so that's not the natural progression that you need to take.
- 12:37It's like, we're focusing on business right now.
- 12:39It's kind of just much more acceptable.
- 12:41But yes, definitely not just that.
- 12:43Yeah.
- 12:44If someone was to turn up to a pub at 44 on a Friday night,
- 12:50people I reckon in New Zealand would be like,
- 12:53oh, what's she doing?
- 12:54Shouldn't she be home with her?
- 12:56You know, people are so judgey here.
- 12:57Someone could be like stumbling out of a bathroom
- 13:01at 4 in the morning.
- 13:02No one would care what they're not allowed.
- 13:04You know?
- 13:05Yes.
- 13:06Go back.
- 13:07Me.
- 13:08Okay.
- 13:10That wise, previously used to be called transfer wise,
- 13:13is a beast platform to transfer money.
- 13:15Yeah.
- 13:16It's so simple and so easy.
- 13:18It's with you in seconds.
- 13:19This is not a paid ad for it.
- 13:20But honestly, it's all on your phone.
- 13:23It's an app.
- 13:24You've also got a digital if postcard or debit card on your phone
- 13:28and you can just pay away.
- 13:29But honestly, it's just made my life so much easier.
- 13:31I remember even three years ago,
- 13:33and I had to use transfer wise
- 13:34and then transfer that to a monitor.
- 13:35I don't know.
- 13:36It's just everything's in one place.
- 13:37I'm still doing that.
- 13:39But it removes the extra step,
- 13:40which means you can get money faster
- 13:41and then that kind of,
- 13:42and you can pay people easily.
- 13:44And it's crazy.
- 13:45It's at least to pay like $50 for a international transfer fee.
- 13:48Yeah.
- 13:49Just a fee, a one-off,
- 13:49this is what it's going to cost you.
- 13:51And so you transfer massive amounts of money
- 13:53and then those money,
- 13:55that money isn't earning interest
- 13:56because you're having to have it in a spending account.
- 13:58And so it was kind of counter-intuitive.
- 14:00But yeah, I definitely think wise has made my life
- 14:03so much easier, but almost too easy.
- 14:05I'm like, no, just tap, tap, tap, yeah.
- 14:07It's so easy on this transfer more money in there.
- 14:09Yeah, it's not ideal.
- 14:10Yeah, transfer wise is a game changer.
- 14:13Money related, what have I noticed?
- 14:15Oh, so many people don't contribute to their pension.
- 14:19So pension is like a kiwi saver in New Zealand.
- 14:22It is absolutely mind-blowing.
- 14:25How few people care about it,
- 14:27know about it, contribute to it.
- 14:30Yeah, it's crazy.
- 14:31And it's 8% here.
- 14:32Yeah, so 8% is almost like the default amount
- 14:35to New Zealand, it's like 3, 6, and 10 is it?
- 14:373 is the default.
- 14:38Yeah, 3 is the default.
- 14:39We're just here, it's 8.
- 14:40Yeah.
- 14:41And the government matches it by a whole dollar.
- 14:43Yeah.
- 14:44Which is crazy.
- 14:45Have I got snott on my nose?
- 14:46Is that the case you keep?
- 14:47No, I think it's like here.
- 14:48Oh, okay.
- 14:49I feel like I've got a here.
- 14:50I keep stepping or like a fluff.
- 14:52Do you want me to have a look?
- 14:53Turn to the side.
- 14:54Other way?
- 14:55I'll just wipe it.
- 14:56No, you don't, you're good.
- 14:57There you go.
- 14:58Sorry, sorry, that was a bit distracting.
- 15:00Are you okay?
- 15:01Just do it like, nice.
- 15:03I put bronzer, I think, one of the brushes.
- 15:06Oh, I hate that.
- 15:07Yeah, yeah.
- 15:08You know, I'm sorry.
- 15:09Yeah, anyway, I guess my thing is I feel proud of New Zealand and Australia for being
- 15:15so on top of their super and Kiwis over.
- 15:18But I'm sorry, the default New Zealand's 3%, it's 8% in the UK and it's 10% in Australia.
- 15:25Like, come on.
- 15:263%, that's going to be sorted out.
- 15:28Yeah, we need to up that.
- 15:29I mean Kiwis over hasn't been around for that long, so I'll give you that Kiwis over
- 15:33in the Prime Minister of what's us.
- 15:35Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, tag them.
- 15:36Yeah.
- 15:37Up at place.
- 15:38Someone actually mentioned, this is a bit of a side note, that they were thinking about
- 15:42curbing inflation by making Kiwis over contributions go up to people who had to save more,
- 15:47so they weren't spending, as well as increasing interest rates.
- 15:51And I was like, oh my gosh, so people are really struggling to get by right now, let alone
- 15:56the government change the rules and saying you have to contribute more.
- 15:58Like, I think there's a time to do it.
- 16:01And yeah, I think it will increase over time, but most do, like the UK one, they want
- 16:07to get 15%, same in Australia, so I think it will increase over time.
- 16:11But I mean, we're at the lot, one of the line of thecentage, the time is on now, definitely
- 16:15not the time.
- 16:16We need all the money we can get.
- 16:20The Curve Classroom Vicki.
- 16:21Woohoo!
- 16:22It's that time of year again that comes around twice a year.
- 16:26So the Curve Classroom is our sixth week online, of course, to learn all about DIY and
- 16:30investing.
- 16:31I think this has been one of the most empowering things they've done to date.
- 16:35Because you've done quite well in your investments, haven't you?
- 16:37I've liked that credit for that, but I can't.
- 16:38No, you absolutely can take credit for that.
- 16:41A hundred percent.
- 16:42There's no way I would have done that without the course.
- 16:43Yeah, so the foundations of investing, it takes you all the way from the basics, so if
- 16:48you're sitting there going, I don't know anything about investing, perfect for you.
- 16:51And it builds your knowledge, and your confidence, and then you create this amazing portfolio
- 16:56that's suited for you, so it's got a bit of everything for everyone.
- 16:59I will just add in there.
- 17:00It doesn't matter where you're at and you're investing journey.
- 17:02It is.
- 17:03It's right at the time.
- 17:04Yeah.
- 17:05And it's $699, which might sound like a lot, but it's totally worth the investment.
- 17:10It's a six week course.
- 17:11There's live chickens with me along the way.
- 17:14There's exclusive podcasts.
- 17:16There's a personalized budgeting and spending check.
- 17:18There's honestly, I could go on and on.
- 17:20Yep.
- 17:21So if you'd like to find out more or you want to join the weightless, then click the link
- 17:24in our show notes.
- 17:26Do you just do one?
- 17:28I can click on where we're up to.
- 17:29No, I'm on non-money related now.
- 17:32It's so refreshing.
- 17:34I don't know how this is going to come across, but it's so refreshing to be unknown and
- 17:39be anonymous.
- 17:40Oh, I know what you mean.
- 17:41Just not know anyone.
- 17:42I'm not saying I'm a someone, but I know exactly what you mean.
- 17:45Just like to walk down the street, pick your nose and know that no one says, we're
- 17:48the Jennifer, we're just about to record this podcast.
- 17:52We were lucky.
- 17:53So Gerrano's here doing the audio technical stuff.
- 17:56We were just doing a quick shot check and fix sitting there.
- 18:00Oh my god.
- 18:01Shops are finger-operated.
- 18:02I just had to clap.
- 18:03I had to clap.
- 18:04Yeah, whatever.
- 18:05We were like, good midshot.
- 18:06It was hard.
- 18:07It was like, what are you doing?
- 18:08You were so embarrassed.
- 18:09Anyway, no, I don't mean that.
- 18:10I just mean you can walk down the street and you could be dressed like a crazy person,
- 18:16singing your heart out and no, you're not going to bump into me.
- 18:18I don't know anyone.
- 18:19Do you know what I mean?
- 18:20I do get, I love that about, and I don't want this to be like an I hate New Zealand podcast.
- 18:25But I do love that about New Zealand sometimes, that you walk down, you see so many people
- 18:29when you catch up and I love that.
- 18:30But I also love here, you can have the complete opposite and not bump into anyone.
- 18:34And when you do it, it's so exciting.
- 18:36We bumped into a friend of ours when we were last here and we were both screamed her
- 18:40night at the same time.
- 18:41She got such a fright.
- 18:43We just was so not used to bumping into someone.
- 18:45It was quite crazy.
- 18:47I also think, yeah, I mean, it's made me do some strange things, I'll be honest, like
- 18:51the anonymity.
- 18:52The other day I was having our lights, like our podcast lights delivered from where I was
- 18:56staying when I was last here.
- 18:58So there was stored for me in a friend's house, anyway, they ubered and it was dinner time.
- 19:02I was in my robe and the uber was arriving.
- 19:06I had my hair in a barn that I had no shoes on.
- 19:08I was in a G string and no bra with this like wrap around the no shoes.
- 19:12And the uber started pulling up and I thought, I'm just going to go down and I'll just
- 19:15go down and quickly pick them up and I actually had a couple of friends there for dinner
- 19:18and they're like, you're not going to go out like that though, are you?
- 19:21And I said, yeah, yeah, I am.
- 19:23And so I ran downstairs, we were outside and the car, the uber driver, like the car was
- 19:27locked.
- 19:28So he couldn't seem to, I was like hurry up, hurry up, get it out, I just want to quickly
- 19:32run inside.
- 19:33I had to rush.
- 19:34I'm making it on the road.
- 19:35Make it at like 5.20pm and he couldn't open the car, so I was just standing there for
- 19:41like, oh, so mortifying, like I never, I looked, I looked like this, the weird neighbour.
- 19:47Yeah.
- 19:48That was not good.
- 19:49But I know what you mean.
- 19:50And I think there's something so refreshing about just being able to, you know, you don't
- 19:54go to an excite class in the morning and see someone you're at high school with or
- 19:57an ex-boyfriend or three or, yeah, yeah, no, it is good.
- 20:02It means you meet lots of interesting people as well.
- 20:04So I just very good at that, talking to people at the bus stop, talking to people with
- 20:07a job.
- 20:08I just love meeting random people.
- 20:09I think it's the funnest thing you've ever, um, oh, people just have so much party stamina
- 20:15over here.
- 20:16No, I'm, I mean, I'm, I'm a great, I'm, yeah, I'm looking at you, but I'm also looking
- 20:21at my flatmate who came home at 10.30 in the morning and then goes to work.
- 20:27And I'm like, are you all right?
- 20:29Like, does this need to be an intervention or is this just totally normal?
- 20:32And it appears to be that it's totally normal.
- 20:34Yeah.
- 20:35That's a good one.
- 20:36Yeah.
- 20:37Um, money.
- 20:38My money related one is, well, it's finance related, there are, what I love about being
- 20:45in bigger cities is that you can walk around and there's so many public companies that
- 20:49you can invest in.
- 20:50You can actually see the brands and you can see the shops and the, well, whatever it is,
- 20:55and it's quite cool.
- 20:56Whereas we do have that in New Zealand, but a lot of the companies are the warehouse.
- 20:59Well, yeah, they're not, they're not, I guess, consumer facing their, their, their
- 21:04future building, you know, or contact energy or the, I knew that was going to be at least
- 21:08next.
- 21:09There's the ones in the background.
- 21:10They're not the cool, fun, exciting ones.
- 21:12So there's like Sainsbury's, which I shop at all the time, I'm like, oh, this is a
- 21:15public thing.
- 21:16Do you shop at Sainsbury's?
- 21:17Yeah.
- 21:18Maybe I need to start shopping at Sainsbury's.
- 21:19Yes.
- 21:20That's a conversation for a time.
- 21:21Yeah.
- 21:22Um, like H&M Boots, Boots is, it's actually listed in the US.
- 21:25It's owned by Walgreens.
- 21:26That's a pharmacy.
- 21:27There's a pharmacy, but yeah, uh, Tesco's, Burberry, Vodafone, like all those names that
- 21:31you know, that you see around, you can actually, I don't even know what Tesco is if you're
- 21:37from Australia.
- 21:38It's a supermarket.
- 21:39Yeah.
- 21:40Oh, really?
- 21:41No.
- 21:42Because I even remember when we were here last year and you're like, make me outside the
- 21:44Boots and I was looking for a shoe shop for like 10 minutes.
- 21:48Oh, please.
- 21:49Okay.
- 21:50My many related ones, eating organic fruit and vegetables is so much more achievable
- 21:56over here.
- 21:57It's actually way cheaper.
- 21:58Is it?
- 21:59I've been going to the Whole Foods because honestly, that's the one thing that I remember
- 22:03when I had to give that up in New Zealand because I love organic produce.
- 22:07I think it's so, if I can afford to eat organic, that's something that brings me a lot
- 22:10of joy.
- 22:11But I had to cut back on that because it was just totally unfeasible.
- 22:13Yeah.
- 22:14But over here, the Whole Foods, actually not that expensive.
- 22:18Yeah.
- 22:19That's been kind of nice for me because I'm like, oh, it's like a treat.
- 22:22Yeah, it's such a treat.
- 22:23Every day.
- 22:24Yeah, yeah.
- 22:25I love that.
- 22:26Nice.
- 22:27Which we do one more non-money, non-money, then a money.
- 22:30Yeah, I love that.
- 22:31Okay.
- 22:32One of my non-money related ones would be, I think, just the places we've had meetings and
- 22:40has been so wild, like the historic buildings, the history, the stories behind them.
- 22:48You're just like, you forget that London and the UK has been around for so much longer
- 22:52than New Zealand.
- 22:53There's so much history here.
- 22:54And they've had to take a moment to be like, wow, there were people in the 1800s walking
- 22:59these.
- 23:00Before they even like the 1200s.
- 23:01Yeah, it's crazy.
- 23:02When we were in Oxford?
- 23:03Yeah, that's crazy.
- 23:04Yeah.
- 23:051200.
- 23:06When we went to speak at Oxford, like, I don't know how long it was now by the time this
- 23:09podcast comes out, but we did a little hop on, hop off bus tour after we did a talk.
- 23:15And then we were like, we've got to have a look around.
- 23:17And some of the buildings were from like 1200s.
- 23:20Yeah.
- 23:21And when we were in the House of Lords, which I didn't even actually want to ask, that
- 23:25we got an invitation for this meeting, and that had to email and capitals go, this is
- 23:29essentially Parliament, by the way.
- 23:30And I was like, oh, so I was like, do you reckon we'd go three hours early and have a look
- 23:33around?
- 23:34I was like, I think we'll be arrested if we could.
- 23:36I was like, can I wear a crop top in charge?
- 23:39She's like, absolutely not.
- 23:40And then the photo afterwards, it's like, well, we were told, yeah, not to wear, we weren't
- 23:44told, but we were like, surely we shouldn't wear suitors.
- 23:46Did a bit of research.
- 23:47We're a bit hangover.
- 23:48Shouldn't wear a major.
- 23:49Shouldn't wear sleeveless.
- 23:50I don't know after it, of us.
- 23:51Why?
- 23:52What did we look like?
- 23:53I'm wearing no sleeves and you're wearing red midriff shine, and I was like, wow, we had
- 23:57one job.
- 23:58Didn't even fall in shock.
- 23:59Like, we try to look professional.
- 24:00Yeah, we forget the memo that was like, yeah, my top must have just written up, because
- 24:03I definitely was in the crop top.
- 24:04Yeah.
- 24:05It all wasn't meant to be a crop top.
- 24:06Okay.
- 24:07Was it kind of like...
- 24:08Well, then we met with two people in our ring sneakers.
- 24:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:10We built it up for the ring.
- 24:11But yes, being able to walk into an area where Prince William's wives are painted
- 24:17around in a big circle of malls and, yes, something.
- 24:20King Richard's eight wives or something.
- 24:21Whatever.
- 24:22Prince William's eight wives.
- 24:23No, sorry.
- 24:24Sorry, Kate.
- 24:25I think I said Henry, didn't I?
- 24:26Anyway, what do you know?
- 24:27Yeah.
- 24:28And that kind of...
- 24:29Oh my God, this is just so classic embarrassing Kiwi in London.
- 24:31And I was like, oh my gosh.
- 24:32And the meeting we had in this room and we were right by the fangs.
- 24:36Looks like...
- 24:37I was like, where?
- 24:38I mean, the team's.
- 24:39I was like, oh, yours.
- 24:40I was like, you know, I'm kind of like not surprised.
- 24:46Oh, really?
- 24:47Yeah.
- 24:48I know.
- 24:49No, it's my turn.
- 24:50Don't steal the lemma.
- 24:52Okay.
- 24:53What's another one for me?
- 24:56Non-money related.
- 24:57Yeah, I'm trying to think of it.
- 24:58I want a good one.
- 25:00I'm kind of sick of my lust.
- 25:02I'm going to go rogue.
- 25:03Oh, okay.
- 25:04This is...
- 25:05This is maybe going to sound...
- 25:07I know.
- 25:09I just think what I like is sometimes in small countries.
- 25:14Are we baking New Zealand games?
- 25:16I'm sorry.
- 25:17Slightly.
- 25:18I mean, we love it.
- 25:19No, but the thing is, I feel like we're recycling men like we're in a bot lot.
- 25:23And people have brought in their old cans and we've come to pick up a new one.
- 25:27You know, it's very...
- 25:28That was a really weird analogy, but it feels like we're waiting for each other to break
- 25:32up with their ex-boyfriends to date them.
- 25:33Oh, and you date someone and they're like, oh, they've dated those three friends of yours.
- 25:36You're like, yeah, well, that's normal.
- 25:37Yeah, you can't do this to my sister.
- 25:38My mom went on a date with them.
- 25:40You know what I mean?
- 25:41Like, it's just like a lot.
- 25:42Yeah.
- 25:43Anyway, what's lovely about this thing?
- 25:45Have you ever dated the same guy as your sister?
- 25:47No, but you have.
- 25:48No, I haven't.
- 25:49It's my sister.
- 25:50No, I haven't.
- 25:51I have to definitely not.
- 25:52I don't think so, anyway.
- 25:53No, neither.
- 25:54I know, but like, even like all the dating apps over here, I'm like, oh, my gosh.
- 25:58I think it's just fun to be like, oh, you look cool.
- 26:00You look cool.
- 26:01And I have no mutual friends, and you're probably not a serial killer, because in New
- 26:04Zealand, if you don't have 150 mutual friends, you assume there's something wrong with
- 26:10them.
- 26:11So it's not me, but it's kind of true.
- 26:14And I just think you could go.
- 26:15I mean, you could go on four dates in a week, and it's fine, because no one's going to
- 26:19know each other.
- 26:20Not that I have that much time.
- 26:21You can date here.
- 26:22You can date.
- 26:23You can date here.
- 26:24And be young and have fun and not be stressed about coming up at the local yoga class.
- 26:28Yeah.
- 26:29You know?
- 26:30Yeah.
- 26:31Love yoga, but you know what I mean?
- 26:32Okay.
- 26:33This last one from me, Money Related, which I'm like so angry.
- 26:38Oh, God.
- 26:39Anyway, the GST threshold for online purchases here is so low.
- 26:45Like I have been stung so badly.
- 26:48What do you mean love?
- 26:49So in New Zealand, it's $1,000.
- 26:51If you buy anything over worth more than $1,000 from overseas, you have to pay GST and
- 26:56an admin fee and you know, there's a DHL, whoever brings the parcel and charges you, and
- 27:01then they'll release it and you can get it.
- 27:03Here it is 130 pounds.
- 27:06So anything over that amount, you get stung.
- 27:09And I didn't realise this and I bought something from Australia and I got the bill and I was
- 27:13like, oh my God.
- 27:14I was like, why didn't I just wait and get that St. New Zealand or like how much was the GST?
- 27:18It was about 250 pounds.
- 27:21I know.
- 27:22What did you buy?
- 27:24You have to say.
- 27:25I bought that share shirt that you wore that other beautiful.
- 27:29Yeah, I know.
- 27:30Such a good shirt.
- 27:31But you can't say no.
- 27:32So you got $500 New Zealand dollars worth of tax.
- 27:35Yes.
- 27:36Do you know what?
- 27:37I just like to tell you that it makes me feel so much better about myself because that
- 27:40is a mere thing.
- 27:41I know.
- 27:42The fact that you did that makes you feel better.
- 27:43I just thought we're in New Zealand and it's $1,000.
- 27:45You know, I kind of don't think twice when I buy online New Zealand, unless it's super expensive,
- 27:50but then I'm seriously considering with them buying it.
- 27:53But here, I just didn't even think and then got so stung and I was like, did you cry?
- 27:58I reckon that's like, cry with it.
- 28:00I just don't want it anymore.
- 28:01Yeah, because that's like a very extensive topic at this point.
- 28:04Yeah.
- 28:05So I feel all right.
- 28:06Oh, like, oh, that's real lovely.
- 28:08I thank you for doing that because you would have only worn about once when you, that
- 28:12is a friendship.
- 28:13Yeah.
- 28:14She needed to look hot.
- 28:15She had about three guys in one room that she'd patched up.
- 28:17Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:18It was an important night for me.
- 28:19I turned up to Vic tonight.
- 28:20Are you all right?
- 28:21Did you just fall out?
- 28:22I just worked with Honey God.
- 28:23Oh.
- 28:24I, Vic had drinks and there was three people there that I was like somewhat semi-interested
- 28:29or had gotten, you know, gotten with before.
- 28:32And I got there and I just hated my outfit.
- 28:34And I was like, Vic, I really, I don't feel good.
- 28:36So she took me into a room and gave me a full new outfit.
- 28:39And I felt a million dollars.
- 28:41Someone told me I looked expensive and I thought, oh, perfect.
- 28:45Just what I was going for.
- 28:46Just the last one.
- 28:47Okay, I couldn't make it good.
- 28:49In with the bang.
- 28:50I'm trying.
- 28:51No pressure.
- 28:52No pressure.
- 28:53And we've lost a few listeners in the meantime.
- 28:57I'm like, I can't thank you.
- 29:00Oh, I just, none of mine are a bang.
- 29:01I feel like I started with all the good stuff.
- 29:04I just think my, the way that I started to think about my time versus my money has changed.
- 29:10I feel like I'm valuing my time more than I'm valuing my money at the moment.
- 29:15What do you mean?
- 29:16So like the other night I went out for dinner with a friend quite far away from home.
- 29:21I'd had about half a bottle of wine, which for me is weird because I don't even drink wine.
- 29:26So at this point I was like, oh, like the thought of being on public transport for an entire hour.
- 29:30I was like, nah, not only is it probably unsafe, but I just like want to get to bed.
- 29:34So I don't feel like shit tomorrow.
- 29:35So I paid for a, I think was a $25.30 Uber home.
- 29:38Yeah.
- 29:39Which it's not outrageous, but it's also quite unnecessary.
- 29:43But in my head I just thought, you know what?
- 29:45To get me home 20 minutes earlier.
- 29:47Yeah.
- 29:48I just decided it was worth it.
- 29:49Yeah.
- 29:50And sometimes Uber's aren't quicker.
- 29:51No, that's a thing.
- 29:52But yeah, when they are, you're kind of sometimes just like, I'll just jump and it takes you jump and it over.
- 29:56Yeah.
- 29:57No, I get that because it does take so long to get around sometimes.
- 30:00It's just an interesting mentality shift for me because I've always been like,
- 30:04save a doll here, save a doll here.
- 30:06You know, really like my dad is the most resourceful person I've ever met.
- 30:10Like I actually remember at Christmas one year, he brought a CD for me from the warehouse.
- 30:15And then he printed out this illegal by the way, so please don't arrest him if you're listening
- 30:20at the place or someone.
- 30:22He printed out a cover for it, found a way to cut it into a circle,
- 30:27like burned the disc, stuck the sticker for the CD on and gave it to me as my Christmas present.
- 30:32And then returned the CD to the warehouse.
- 30:35You know, as like a Monday, it's so illegal.
- 30:37It's so illegal.
- 30:38Sorry, sorry the warehouse.
- 30:39Sorry the warehouse.
- 30:40I only have a sponsor for Casper's.

- 30:51It's a great mentality though.
- 30:52It is good, but it stresses me out because I'm always trying to save a dollar.
- 30:55Yeah.
- 30:56And I think since being here, I've sellered to value my time more than I value the money.
- 31:01Yeah.
- 31:02Which I think has been actually quite healthy.
- 31:04Yeah.
- 31:05Because I still am obsessed with trying to save money, but it's just, I think loosened the reins
- 31:09a little bit for me so that I'm enjoying living here more.

- 33:24Yeah, and the next thing I'm taking will be like, what do you myself?
- 33:27Imagine, I actually do feel, I feel like I could teach people about investing now.
- 33:31Obviously, I wouldn't want any Q&A.
- 33:33I don't want anyone asking any questions because we can't go there.
- 33:36But if I was just spitting all in what I know, it is quite impressive, I must say.
