[rock music plays] Hey, everybody.
0:25
Welcome to Full Spectrum Cycling. This is show number 285. Yes, it is. We- Last of the year. You'd never know it, but we're off to a late start [laughs] here. Oh, a really late start.
0:36
Just the frantic nature of your voice at this point. In, in internet time, it's all good. I know. You need a nap, don't you? Need a little- I need a nap... a little nappy napper. [laughs] Um, so yeah.
0:47
So yeah, last show... Well, the last show we're doing together this year, but I do have one in the can, number 286, I recorded Saturday with, um, Mike McAbee, who came- Yeah...
1:00
through town and did some cool singing stuff and- Oh, yeah... joke playing and- Yes. Very good... did you s- did you see him somewhere? Yeah. Right. Yeah. That's what... Yeah, I went off menu. Okay.
1:11
I did Muleskinner Blues. Oh, right, right, right. It's on the menu though. Nope. Yeah. Eh. No, it is. No, it isn't. I do. I had a picture of it. It's right on his menu. I don't see it.
1:21
Well, it was a good call anyway, and then he did it- Right... the next, he did it the next day too at, uh, Vegas. Yeah, I stopped in at Vegas for a couple songs. I saw you kind of mosey in and mosey out. Yeah. I got...
1:32
I was, I was accosted [laughs] by fun people. Yeah. Good stuff. Trying to tell me to, "Eat food. Eat food. Eat food." And I'm like- Oh, is that-... "I'm just here for- Yeah...
1:41
I'm just here, I'm just here for just to get a little bit of mic and a little bit of drink, and then go home and wait for the Packers to win." Yeah, which they did in fine form. They played? I didn't even know that.
1:51
The Packers played, yes. Yeah. They played the ball-footing thing. [clears throat] The throw ball game. Yep. Is that throw ball? Yeah, it's one of them. Hand, egg. One, one of the throw ball games. Hand, egg.
1:59
Hand, egg, throw ball. Let's do a little bit of Milwaukee stuff real quick, and, uh, we're gonna have Mark Peterson join us in a little bit, and that's gonna be a good thing- Woo!... because we haven't had- Yeah.
2:08
Exactly... [laughs] we haven't had Mark on the show for a while. So, um, number one on the list, Retrospect right down the street got robbed. That's the thing. No. Yeah. From the outside or the inside? From w- why...
2:20
Was it an inside job? I'm not sure. No, no, no. But- I mean, like, how do you get in? No, they- I mean, like, from the inside is-... they came right, they parked right on the street, walked in the door somehow,
2:29
and came out with, like, bankers boxes. Okay. Couple. Casual, casual, not running, no sense of urgency. Comes back out with this thing.
2:38
I don't know, was a tarp, or if it was a really big bag, but he had it over his shoulder. It was red, and I thought, "Santa Claus is going there to get cameras for all the little kiddies." Holy shit. You should see it.
2:50
It's dragging on the ground. It's like- No shit... this big. It's huge. Uh. I'd, I don't know. But they, they, they were... It, there's a story on the news. You can look at it. It's, uh- Oh, wow.
2:59
I didn't know about this at all. Yeah, which it's just our neighborhood, and, you know. Unfortunate. Yeah, 'cause that's a cool place. They- Yeah... they get all sorts of... They have... I think they still have Walkmans.
3:10
You can buy a brand-new Walkman- Yeah... from them. [laughs] And it's like, you know- Kind of-... why, why, why you gotta mess with-... a car Discman that has the anti-jiggle- I think-... technology... like Tony has.
3:19
Right. Right. I still have some MiniDisc players. Right. John? Freaking love those things. Lordy, lordy. All right. Point number two, the Nut Factory party is confirmed for February 22nd, so- Okay. Okay...
3:31
Mark, Mark, if you're in Milwaukee on the 22nd of February, we're having a big building party. [laughs] Party, party, party. It's a good time. It's a good time. Party party. Party, party, party.
3:39
And, uh, uh, we, there's not a lot on the Milwaukee thing that- Yeah, the Minnow got tagged... the SS, the SS Minnow is still, uh- Oh, it got tagged. It was hilarious. Yeah.
3:48
It, it's still, uh- I love that it's still beached... I think the drones did it... it's, I... There's a bunch of... Milwaukee Record guys go down there all the time and they take a- Yeah.
3:55
Well, the, the other Corey, not Bowman, the, uh, Van... I can't remember his name. But, um, I think it was Fuel, Fuel Cafe guy. He's like, "Somebody beat Miggs to it." [laughs] Yeah. I saw that. I was like- Yeah...
4:09
"Damn, that is great." [laughs] In general, in general, I'm not a fan of tagging people's stuff, but that was kind of funny. But they're clever. Oh, I love tagging. They're clever. I'm sorry. Well, you- Yeah.
4:18
It's become clever tagging at this point... what if, when they tag your garage, you're gonna be happy about that? They tagged my one on- Yeah... 3039.
4:23
Kind of bummed me out a little because it had a custom paint job, but- If you do it artistically, come on. It'll be like Portugal. Well, if you pre-tag it- Yeah. Or France is what I...
4:30
[laughs] exactly what I was thinking. Like, I love European tagging. If you pre-tag it, maybe they won't do it. Maybe. Exactly. Well, they'll just cover your shit up with their shit, though. My...
4:38
I remember because when I moved to River West, my friend on the east side said, "Hmm, I wonder how long it's gonna be before your garage is tagged," and then his got tagged. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And mine never did. All right.
4:48
That covers Milwaukee. Yeah. There we go. Milwaukee minute. We did that in I don't know how many minutes, like four. 28, 28 minutes. Four minutes. Uh, so- 20...
4:54
with- without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, welcome Mr. Mark Peterson from Ogden, Utah. Woo-hoo. Yeah. Welcome different time zone. Yeah. [howls] Mountain Time, baby. How are you guys doing?
5:06
Fuck yeah, let's do this. [laughs] We have no snow, and it's kind of warm. Yeah, it was rainy warm. I know. Kind of shitty warm. I mean, I- I know... what the fuck? What's, what's it like out- Why?
5:19
What's it like out- Why?... where you are? What's the, what's the weather in Ogden these days? Dry. Dry, brown, no snow. God damn. Like, fat biking a, a, a distant memory in my mind- Right?...
5:30
when I remember back in the day of just plowing crazy trails through deep snow. Gone. Not, not so much now, huh? Uh, well, it's n- not this year.
5:44
You know, s- here's something though- I mean, I, I can only hope next year there's, like, a volcano explosion somewhere on the planet, and it totally fucks up our entire climate- [laughs]...
5:55
and makes it so there's winter again, but, you know, whatever. It could be Yosemite. So I kind of dropped- We j- just need a small- I kind of-... a small meteor to hit us. [laughs] I kind of- Just a small one...
6:05
I kind of dropped the ball on the, on, on this idea But I was gonna have- For bike life... I was gonna have one of these with Mark's face on it. [laughs] Oh, man.
6:14
It's like a, it's like a paint stirrer stick with somebody's face. This is Pee-wee Herman. Looks like a hamburger. This is Pee-wee Herman's face on this one, but- La, la, ha, ha, la, la, ha, ha...
6:21
when we, when we have a, when we have a guest like Mark on the show, it's like when you're talking, we're just kinda sitting here listening, and everybody watching is going, "What the fuck are those guys doing just sitting around doing nothing?"
6:32
So I thought I'd have a stick- We're talking to Mark... with Mark's face on it, but I dropped the ball and Pee-wee Herman is out of here. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. You don't just throw Pee-wee.
6:41
Pee-wee took... He's fly- That thing flies really well. I guess. All right, so, uh- [laughs] Paging Mr. Herman. Oh, that's awesome. P.W. Herman. M- Mr. Herman. Pee-wee Herman.
6:53
Have you noticed, Mark, that the fatbike.com site is now fully operational again? I have, and I was a little bit shocked when I saw this conversation pop up on social media. What the fuck, bro?
7:10
What, what, what do you mean what the fuck? [laughs] What's the conversation? I don't know. Like, y- you, you are the epitome of fat biking, always have been, always will be.
7:22
Why would you even think of walking away from- Oh, oh, I wouldn't... the greatest website on the planet? I, I, I didn't... Well, I mean, I didn't walk away per se.
7:31
It just, I stepped away to do a job that I had to do that took up a bunch of time, and somebody else, ch- who shall remain nameless, kinda took it over for a while and then- It's called theft...
7:43
kinda ran it into the ground, sort of. Yep. So now we're back and I've, and I've- Yep, yep, yep... I've got, uh, Sealy Dave giving us a hand, and he's very, uh, well-versed in doing stuff like this.
7:53
He was the executive director of the Bike Fed and took care of their website, wrote stories. He's an AP photographer. You know, he can, he can do the, he can do the deeds, so. Far cooler, though. Far cooler.
8:04
I, I, I'm excited. He knocked over Prince. [laughs] Oh, yeah. I, yeah. Well, he did knock over Prince. [laughs] I, I have pa- I have passion in my soul. I know how we were, how it was. Yeah.
8:14
And I know that we can get that same kind of passion out of people again. They're looking for it. They've just got no place to find it. Yeah.
8:22
Well, now they, now they know where to go again and, and, you know, you're welcome to contribute at any time. I know you got a lot of stuff going on in Ogden, and, and, uh, we'll get to your situation in a second. Yeah.
8:32
But, uh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Feel free. Feel free. Take photos. Write stories. That, that- Do, do cool stuff... that's a big factor why I'm not contributing right now. Yeah. So let us in on what Mark's been up to.
8:41
We haven't talked to you for a few months now, so- Yep... give us a, give us a... I've seen your videos. I know you're making some, uh, some bike shop videos, but what else is happening?
8:52
Well, basically, I thought I had a heart attack, and it turned out to be, uh, just, uh, uh, pulmonary embolisms filling up both of my lungs. That's all. Phew. Yeah, that's all.
9:02
But, um, that disrupted my heart to the point of, uh, like a failure, AFib, like, just not gonna work. Like, your, your, your stuff is not working, right? Wow.
9:12
So I've been in the process of addressing those issues in the way that you do, which is slowly and methodically going down a path that insurance has laid out in front of you. Oh. [laughs] Hmm. Okay.
9:30
And is, is it- So here's the thing. I didn't have any insurance when I went into the hospital. Oh. When I was in the hospital having this medical emergency, they said, "Hey, you qualify for insurance.
9:42
You are poor as fuck." [laughs] Okay. "You definitely qualify for insurance." Give the man some money. "So we're gonna give you insurance, and, and don't worry about all this stuff. We gotcha, bro."
9:55
Well, shit, that didn't make you feel better off the bat. And then three months in- Well, uh, as long as the morphine drip was hitting right... right? They tried to make me feel secure.
10:04
Uh, just comfy and like, "Oh, I've got... I'm... I can trust these guys for sure." Yeah, yeah. Anyhow, uh, three months in, like- Turn up, turn the drip up a little more, a little more, little more... right?
10:14
[laughs] Three months in, I get a phone call saying, "Hey, your next appointment where they're gonna either shock your heart or we find out the medication you've been on is the appropriate medication." Okay. "Oh, yeah.
10:26
Y- you're not covered. Your insurance isn't covered by that, so you can't come in." What? Wow, and they're the ones that told you that you could, huh? Yeah. Well, I mean, it was an appointment.
10:39
It was set up through this entire process that I got the insurance while I was in this very specific hospital. So it turns out that there's two major hospital, um, providers of service in our area.
10:56
There's Intermountain Healthcare and there's Ogden Regional, and they're two different things. Ogden Regional, eh, kind of like the half-ass service. [laughs] Okay.
11:08
Uh, Intermountain Healthcare, that's what the rich kids go to. [laughs] Ah. That's like the Mayo Clinic of the West. So- Right, but you probably doesn't go to the Mayo Clinic, so.
11:16
I tried to go to the rich kids category, right? That's the hospital I went to for this situation, and they gave me insurance there. Why they gave me insurance there, uh, it was for the wrong place intentionally. Oh.
11:30
They gave me insurance for the opposite caregivers. Huh. That's bizarre world. So after 30 days of the emergency room visit, I was forced to switch to the other caregivers.
11:49
Like, switching my- Goddamn insurance... primary physician- [laughs] What a fucking fiasco... changed everything. Every, every single thing, uh, un- we were on this, like, flow of going through my recovery.
12:00
We have to start that over. Oh, boy. Well, that's, that's kind of a, a bummer, but it, I hope things are getting on the right track now, hopefully. Hmm. You're feeling better?
12:12
Well, yeah, well, uh, Steve, that's the bottom line. I don't give a fuck. We're gonna be feeling better one way or another. Life is too short to be worried about this stuff. Um, it'll get straightened out.
12:24
Um, I'll get fixed up and we'll be down the road on this thing. The one thing that's most important to me, though, is bicycles. Yeah. Yep. Well, and also, dude, you didn't have a heart attack. Yeah, that's what I hear.
12:38
Yeah. So- Well, yeah, well, I'm, I'm just still in AFib constantly, though. [laughs] Yeah. With the, uh, for, for the uneducated, AFib means your heart is flipping the fuck out, right? Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. Yeah.
12:50
It, it, it, it's ready to go redline at any moment. Yeah, I have, uh- I'm constantly in AFib. Wow. I have, uh, a... What is it? Uh, what is it called? Exercise induced... I, yeah, I don't know.
13:07
I, I had to do a stress test type thing where they really push you to the- Yeah... "Holy Christ." Sure. You know, like, like when I bike, like, up a really big, big, big, big hill, [laughs] Yeah...
13:18
sometimes I'm just like- Yeah... "Oh, no, no, no, no, no." Oh, that's a good- "I'm just gonna slow my"- Yeah... what have you- That's how that works... for a minute. That's- Well-... called being in shape right there...
13:26
blow your load... well, no, no, no, I just don't want my heart to fucking explode- No, that would be bad... because it becomes, like, I know the vibe. Right. Yeah.
13:33
Which led me to really want our heart to- But between that and then I did that, I had like a false alarm as well where it was, like, well, it was, uh, indigestion. Oh, yeah. Which- Mm... just sounds like- Yeah...
13:44
"Fuck you." Yeah. "No, I think I'm having a heart attack." Yeah, that's, that happens to people all the time. "No, you have indigestion." I'm like, "Bleh." It doesn't, I mean- Yeah...
13:51
it sounds like it's minimizing the pain I'm in, but- Yeah. Thank you for me- making me feel like an idiot. Yeah. You don't need a lot of help. You're gonna have a heart attack, JK.
13:59
You don't need a lot of- You just have a- You don't need a lot of help with that... a lot of help. Yeah, yeah. All right.
14:04
You, you guys know as well as I do that as we get older, there's situations that may, we may encounter. Mm. This is one of them, of a, a heavy duty medical situation.
14:14
So what kind of response do dudes like us have to these situations? Well, I think we, we go internal and we find what has helped us survive the worst shit in our lives in the past. Riding a bike.
14:30
And for me, what has helped me survive the worst shit in my past has been riding bicycles. Absolutely. Yeah. Awesome. That means riding fat bikes in particular.
14:38
When the, when I first hooked up with you guys 10-plus years ago, man, 2012, I was stuck in a bad, bad place and my fat bike was like Willy Wonka right out of that place. It totally- Mm-hmm, mm-hmm...
14:56
instantly transported me from the shit of my life into the funnest of my life. Awesome. And I think that that's what kind of faded away in people's enthusiasm.
15:10
They forget that transition, how much of a difference that makes. Yeah. Now they're, they're quantifying everything. Oh, how fast does it brake or turn or corner or excel or- Right... any of that kind of stuff.
15:22
Grand champion. Yeah. And they forget the fun factor. Like, how much fun is it? Yeah. No, I agree. Absolutely. I, I'm glad it's, it's helping you again, so it's like- It's coming full circle... a co- Yeah, for sure.
15:35
Um, y- so- Okay. Okay... I don't, was it a, was it a Facebook post that...
15:40
So not to minimize the health thing, but, uh, I wanna get to, to your, um, your post because you wanna, you need to make some money part of, partly because of this situation and you have all these bikes and you're trying to get them to people, and they're awesome creations, and people don't wanna spend any money on them.
15:57
Yeah. So y- so I actually had- Dude, how weird is this phenomenon? Yeah. Well, actually, I mean, I, I, I, I've had, I- Like, dude, like, you've had them. I know you-
16:06
I, I have a whole script written about doing- Me and you, me and you have definitely had the same sort of situation in the past where, where we have put a lot of effort into creating, uh, a bike that's maybe built up for a certain situation, and then we think it's gonna sell instantly, but it doesn't.
16:23
[laughs] No one wants it. But it doesn't. It sits there. Well, it's- And it sits there. Yeah. And it sits there. Yeah. That's why I got the fuck you ch- And, and then you have 40 fuckers- Yeah, that's true...
16:32
or excuse me, 40 of them. True that. [laughs] Well, so I, I, I had this idea to do a video in the shop of a 1995 GT LTS Team that I have that was, like, my downhill race bike from '95- I like that bike...
16:45
with Kooka cranks and Paul Components stuff. Sweet. It's got, it's got all the best stuff. That's a dope bike. And I'm like, what is somebody gonna- Hell, yeah... oh, it even has a Lowa Leader fork on it, right?
16:54
It's the good shit. And I'm like, what is somebody gonna pay for the whole bike? Because- 50 bucks. Yeah. Are they... Or even 1,500 maybe. Right. They, they- I don't know... maybe if you're lucky.
17:03
It's got titanium spoked, you know, Cane Creek wheels. Dude, dude, seriously- But do I-... 300 to $500 for what you're describing. Yeah, but when I part it out, it's like $2,500 or something. Right. It's 3,000. Yeah.
17:16
But then you gotta throw in your labor. Yeah, yeah. Right. Exactly. Which was, which was gonna be the thing.
17:20
It was like, if I could get rid of this, just if it was a number for 1,500 and just get it out the door, that's fine. [laughs] If it's gonna be less than that, then it makes sense to part it out.
17:30
But you say, "Well, you know, now I've gotta pack all that stuff," and it takes time to do all that. Yeah. Mental. But if I'm making- That's mental tyranny... twice as much, is that where the, the, the line is?
17:39
Or- Maybe it's worth it. You know. Yeah. It, it is worth it because- Well, you know... I, I need to maximize how much money's [laughs] coming. And I'm probably not gonna sell that bike.
17:47
Well- That was just an example, but I have all these other bikes. Like, I got a full custom Wednesday. You know, it's like a $4,500 thing retail. Yeah. It's a $3,500 thing with a good deal. Yeah.
17:57
And I can't get somebody to buy it for the- Yeah... price of a new stock Wednesday. Yeah, a regular Wednesday. It is the stupidest thing. I don't know. Exactly. Whatever. I don't know how to- It is.
18:07
And, and that, that brings me to kind of my, my next question. I have a lot more. We could talk about that shit for hours and hours- [laughs]... what we were just talking about. Yeah, for sure.
18:15
But, um, where, where I wanna go next is where we're going over the next four years. All right. Do tell. Yeah, exactly. My, my point is, is I think, uh, bike shops are in a lot of trouble. Oh, yeah. The...
18:33
Any kind of retail on bike shops is in serious trouble. Anything that is gonna involve a tariff- Mm-hmm... is in serious trouble.
18:44
Well, you know, for, I mean, for bike shops selling new bikes, that I can see, and in our current situation that's probably not that big a deal because we don't have a storefront anymore.
18:55
But if that's the case, that- You're just service now? Yeah, well, to some extent, and cargo bikes and, you know, custom builds and stuff, but, um, we don't, we- Right... got rid of our storefront. It... Long story.
19:06
I could... That, this would take an hour just to explain. We could go for hours on that one. Yeah. But- [laughs] So here's, so here's the, here's the deal.
19:11
We need to do a show- [laughs] We need to do a show where we can really talk about everything we wanna talk about. Yeah.
19:16
[laughs] But I mean, like, here's the thing, uh, service is always gonna be a thing because you can't buy that over the internet, right? Right.
19:24
And, and if the tariffs are gonna make bikes really expensive, that's almost better for the service side of the business because people are gonna have to either maintain or upgrade their current bikes.
19:34
Parts might be a little more expensive. 100%. Yeah. So, you know, I don't know that it's a horrible thing for small guys like us. I think it's a horrible thing for manufacturers and for bigger shops, but- Yep...
19:45
you know, I don't know. Yep. What are you gonna do? You, you pays your money and you takes your chances. You know what? I'll tell you exactly what you're gonna do. You're just gonna wait, and guess what?
19:53
Not gonna fucking happen, 'cause the motherfucker lies all the time. Yeah, that's- [laughs] That's my take. I- No, so- I-...
20:00
my, my thought was is that we are hitting it on stride, that actually the fact that you've gone through what you've gone through and you're where you're at is gonna put your shop positioned to deal with this situation better than most.
20:17
Sure. That I, being just a mechanic out of my home, being able to keep that overhead super stupid low is going to find a path through these next few years that is going to be amazing.
20:33
Yeah, yeah, as long as you can keep the overhead down, I think you're right on the right track. Let's, uh, let's do the- Absolutely... let's, uh, do the- Hit the thing... we're gonna- Hit it. Hit it. Do that thing.
20:42
There we go. [bell ringing] Since, uh, since Tony's refilling on the beer side of stuff, we're, uh, we're at the top of the hill here. Uh- Are you able to drink beer, Mark, or are they saying no?
20:53
Um, I am actually abstaining right at the moment. Okay. Um, I, I'm just kind of, uh, taking care of my situation. Understood. We are... JK got this, uh, Out- I'll be on a podcast [laughs]
21:09
Uh, JK got this Outlaw Mile High Light beer, which is actually pretty decent. Yeah. I don't mind this. I could drink a lot of this. I don't know. It's... Is it sort of Montuke-ish? Yeah, it's very much like a Montuke.
21:19
Kinda. It's sort of a Colorado beer. Do you think it'd really been around since 1859? I'd be, uh- I don't know. It's like- I don't know. It seems-...
21:25
it's called Tivoli or Trivoli, uh, Brewing Company out of- I love the can... Colorado. Where's- Daredevil- It's got a nice map... since 1859. Enjoy the gold.
21:34
[laughs] It's sev- seven bucks a six-pack over at Gilberto, and- And it's five what? I was like, no, it's like four. 4.2. 4.2 is even better. Dude, it's totally... Yeah. I mean, it's a- Oh. Yeah... yeah. This is sorta-
21:47
Super enjoyable. All right, now what do you got going, what's going on over there, Mark? Yeah. Um, well, I've, I've actually, um, like, I've been running my business out of my home, and right as we spoke- [laughs]...
22:00
I had one of my favorite clients, Ky- Kyle, show up to pick up a couple of his kids' bikes that I went through just recently. Oh, cool. Cool. So he's rolling out the front door with bikes. [laughs] Nice. Nice.
22:12
Uh, that's awesome. Yeah, yeah. I'm a functioning bike shop as we're talking. [laughs] That's nice. Yeah. Back when we had a bike shop, we used to do that, too. That was fun. Mm-hmm.
22:21
It's always great to have someone, and then you get them on the show, and you're like, "Hey- Yeah, yeah... you got time to sit down and talk on the thingy?"
22:26
Yeah, the dude that showed up with a badass fat bike, and he was like- [laughs]... "You told me to go out and take pictures of it. You gotta go take a look."
22:31
Yeah, go take a s- go take some pictures with the- Oh, so, so, so what do you guys think of the new tires, the, the new, the Moon- Moonlander, the new one? What do you think? I'm- Oh, the six-inchers?
22:40
I haven't seen it yet, and I haven't had an opportunity to ride it yet. Ride it, yeah, me either. I mean, George has one up in Green Bay. I could go up there and check it out, but yeah. That seems- I mean-...
22:48
terribly excessive... it's, it's excessive. It's, it's pricey, too, but it's cool. It's cool. Yeah. Well, it's up to you.
22:56
I mean, it already feels like we're riding, like, on a couch, like, you know, boom, boom, boom, you know, on the r- on the right kinda snow. I, I- Yeah... I was excited for the idea of a six-plus inch fat bike.
23:09
I thought fatter the tire, hell yeah, that's where we're going. And I like that they dropped the size of the wheel down, too. Oh, you remember those tires that we were gonna make? Yeah.
23:17
It, it's- You like how that came out, turned out, man? [laughs] Otherwise you end up with too much of a 29er with six-inch wide tires. Well, you remember, remember that- Yeah...
23:25
remember, remember that, uh, woman that had the, uh, double- The double fork... the double fork Surly? Mm-hmm, yep. So it was, like, four, and they only- Right up front... I think it was, like, four inch on each one.
23:34
Mm-hmm. But still, I mean, that's like a- Intrigued... 10-foot imprint... the change that occurred. Like a cow catcher, damn it. Yeah. Okay. It was- Yeah, that funky fork with the two wheels on it.
23:45
[laughs] Is that the one you're talking about? I might have to- Rear, rear regular and then two front tires? Yeah. Yeah, that was pretty cool. Yeah. And it was, like- I mean, so-... army green and da, da, da, da, da.
23:55
Think if you put a Sea Widow on that. I, I like the idea of the Surly. My issue with it is that there's only one tire for it, and- Yeah, true that... are other people gonna come- Yeah... and jump in and do that again?
24:07
Like, Surly's done that in the past with the Pugsley, you know? Are they gonna never make a Black Floyd for it? I don't think that would be... That would be stupid. The thing is for riding on soft sand and soft... No.
24:18
It's not made for riding on the street. [laughs] That's what I wanna ride on. Um- You need to find somebody that's going to work there and then- But it's, but it's long... put the bloop on your ear.
24:25
You know, it has to be long so you can, you know, pedal, otherwise you're scraping your feet on the tire I don't know. Like I said, George has one. Looks fun. Probably should go up to Green Bay and check it out.
24:34
I don't wanna bash it until I ride it, but- Right. But- I'm going, I'm going back to a Northpaw, I think. I mean- What are they, 4,500? Well, no, I mean- Yeah, 45 with a pinion...
24:42
even, even with the five, even the, with the five, turning the, I mean, just in turning at times- I-... it is kinda like swimmy, like w- Oh, it feels like a tractor to me... you know, like that. I'm not a fan of it.
24:52
I can only imagine- It's because-... another inch- I-... would be like going like, "Oh, hey, any power steering fluid in here?" Yeah. Right. I mean, it's a geometry thing. If they have the geometry right- Oh...
25:01
it should ride fine. But, uh, yeah. No, I just don't- Yeah, I- No, I would... Dude, I, I think here's the problem. Here's the problem that you guys are running into.
25:09
The terrain that you're riding doesn't suit the needs of that kind of a bike. True. Like, as in- Mm-hmm... what you're riding doesn't need a 6 1/2 inch bike. No. Yeah. True.
25:21
It would be nice if we had some snow this year. We, uh, we have that though. We have snow if we wanna ride. We don't have any snow yet still. We go through this want, need thing too. But see, that's the thing.
25:30
Um, that- Yeah... transport was built on this, like, like absurd predication where y- you know, you went from, what, what was it? 1.9s, then they would stack three of them side by side- [laughs] Sure...
25:42
on a bitter rod- Yeah... to get the kind of support that they needed. You know what I mean? Yeah. And it just was bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger, and it was only bigger and bigger for a reason. Right.
25:54
I, I- And I think there's a reason on the, on the new Topolok. I think that, that the six inches are justified. I think they're outrageous. [laughs] I think that they're a bit of a marketing ploy.
26:06
But at the same time- Totally... anything you can shock this, this, like, community with- Industry with, yeah, yeah, yeah... to get them excited about, I think is good. So would you... Well, I mean, I...
26:17
Have you ridden one yet? No. I want to- Yeah... so bad. Right. I can imagine what they feel like. So, so I guess what I'm wondering is- I'm using my five-inch- Yeah... mentality and kinda just... Yeah.
26:30
I'm, I'm just wondering, like, are- It just feels like it would just- Are people going to- I don't wanna be shocked by turning left or right...
26:35
are, are people going to, like, sell all their other fat bikes for this one, or is this just an additional one for that, those extremely rare circumstances where that platform is necessary?
26:46
Or are you just gonna keep your normal, uh, four incher? Option b- option B. Option B. Yeah. It, it is going to be for a super tight niche. Um- Sure... it is gonna fail miserably.
27:00
They are gonna lose a shit ton of money on it. And we can all get them for cheap. But it'll be a fun damn bike to ride. [laughs] Yeah. Hopefully- Just nobody buys them.
27:09
Well, I mean- Well, in a year or two we're gonna be able to get one of them for like 100, 200 bucks. [laughs] Yeah, I'm then there. Hey, we're playing- I, I would be s-...
27:15
yeah, we're playing five dimensional chess here, people... I would be surprised if they made more than 200 of them because they can do small runs like that. Uh, you know. I don't know. Yeah. Whatever.
27:28
I wanna- Like, like in the world of- I, I guess I better go up and- It's like- Before I start talking out of my ass, I should go up there and ride one up in Green Bay- Right...
27:34
and just see what it feels like, but I'm gonna wait till they actually have snow up there- Yeah, yeah... enough to give it a good test on. I think George will let me take one for a day.
27:42
So it feels like if you- He's got one that he's using, so- As I, as I remember back, as I remember back on my first experience ever on a fat bike, um, I remember my anticipation of what I was going to feel and then what I really felt, right?
27:57
And so I would be willing to apply that same kinda thought to this entire thing, that you- Mm... may have an anticipation of what you're gonna feel, but it may be totally different than that.
28:08
Like, for example, when I got on a Moonlander for the very first time, I thought it, I was gonna be able to feel these big, squishy monster truck tires in front of me. But instead, it felt like just a mountain bike.
28:22
Mm-hmm. It really didn't feel that much different at all. I, I'm trying to- Yeah. Yeah, yeah... I'm trying to think of the first fat bike I rode. Yeah. It would be a Northpaw, I would imagine.
28:30
It was just like- I mean, I bought Northpaw one- It was like half of a, like half a block distance. It was like, "Okay, what do I expect? And wait, no, this is just a bike." This is a regular bike. "This is a bike. Okay.
28:40
Yeah, it's a bike." Yeah, I think the first one I rode was a Northpaw- Yeah, it's a bike. It's like riding-... and I was like, "This is freaking incredible."
28:48
All right, Mark, let's co- let- That's what I think may end up happening... let, let's cover one more thing real quick before we get out of here. Um, tell, uh, how's the, the video thing with, um...
28:59
I think it's, it's, now it's you, basically, Mark Peterson or Fat Bike Films, but you're doing filming in your shop, doing, doing maintenance and, and doing other things. How, uh, how's that going?
29:09
It looks like you're being a little more prolific with, uh, posting videos. Well, I've been experimenting like crazy, and here's the thing. I don't, I don't kinda give a fuck.
29:22
Um, I'm, I'm gonna, I'm gonna play around with this art. I'm gonna let it do what it's gonna do.
29:28
Um, if, if I settle into filming in one way, it'll be because of these reasons and those reasons, not because of preconceived ideas or thoughts. And so I'm not trying to win, everyone.
29:43
I'm not trying to win the whole thing. I'm just trying to swim along and, and absorb the process. But I think ultimately that swimming along will get people to rewatch the earlier shit, be able to see- There you go...
29:57
how I got where I got- Yeah... from where I went there. So are you- Does, does that make sense? Yeah, it does. Are you putting them on YouTube or are you just doing them on Facebook right now? No, they're all on YouTube.
30:11
[laughs] Nothing goes onto Facebook. Okay. It's always from YouTube to Facebook. So is there... Is it, is the Mark Peterson, uh, Fat Bike Films one the one you're putting that on? Or is- No, no. Actually- Okay...
30:24
that, that, that is m- my old, uh, repository of- Yeah...
30:28
hundreds of hours of people fat biking that eventually we're going to put into, like, a- Some kind of eclectic revision, you know, remembering the entire sport over a decade or more, you know, kind of thing.
30:43
So is the new one, then, then it's Neighborhood Bike Shop is the new one? Yeah. Um, the, the Neighborhood Bike Shop is what I'm gonna try to, like, live from.
30:55
If the Neighborhood Bike Shop makes progress and goes a certain direction, there's the possibility of the Community Bike Shop happening- Nice. Cool... which would be a much larger non-profit type organization.
31:09
But I've gotta establish the dynamics of the first part, and then figure that out, and then move on from there. I can't, can't jump to the top of the mountain. Right. Right. Well, I just was thinking we could...
31:19
Oh, there you are. Hi, now I see you. Um, [laughs] I, I think I'm pretty sure I'm sub- He's teleported... pretty sure I'm subscribed. Well, if I'm not, I'm gonna hit the sub- I just hit the subscribe button, Mark.
31:30
I just hit- Post it. Oh, yes. I can hear it. I can hear some- I, I thought I'd already- Thank you. Thank you...
31:34
I thought I'd already subscribed to it, 'cause I wanna keep up with what you're doing, and, uh, I think maybe other people do too, so we'll definitely...
31:41
Maybe I'll pop one of your videos into the show notes and then be like, "Well, let's see what Mark's doing over there." Right on. Yeah. [laughs] Seems like a good idea. So. That'd be cool. I mean, I, I, actually, I've...
31:52
What I've been focusing on primarily lately is just doing tune-ups for my friends and family around me. People know what my medical situation is, so they wanna donate, but I don't wanna just have them give me money.
32:04
Copy that. I would rather do a service or- Right on... something for them to- Mm-hmm... to earn that money.
32:10
And I've been getting overwhelmed with, um, t- tune-up requests, like you guys saw during the, the show when I was- Yeah. [laughs]... delivering a couple bikes to a client like that. [laughs] That was great.
32:22
Um, it- Uh, love it... it, it is something that I'm getting about six or seven every two weeks right at the moment. Mm. Um, at 100 bucks a pop-ish, that's not enough. I need to do more.
32:34
Um, but at the same time, you can't always get what you want without working for it, so I'm gonna put some labor into this thing, put some time into it.
32:45
I've got some other plans that are trying to help keep me afloat during the meantime.
32:49
I may end up having to take some kind of other job just to, you know, make ends meet, but bicycles are always gonna be the bottom line for me. I'm- Oh... I'm a bike guy. Yeah, you are. [laughs] You are a bike guy.
33:01
And we're glad- You are definitely a bike guy... we're glad to have you. Yeah. All right, man, we're gonna wrap this thing up this time, but, uh, let's not make it a few, few months before we talk- Yeah, please...
33:09
to you again. So, uh, and [clears throat]- You sound good... yeah, definitely. Um, um, just if I can get 30 seconds, please. Yes, go.
33:16
If you're in the Ogden or Utah area, please come visit Pronghorn Bicycles, either up in Perry, Utah, at...
33:24
And you can find them at 475 Maddox Lane with a phone number of 435-230-3775, or if you're out in the Syracuse area in Utah, you can always hit us up at 2432 West 1700 South Syracuse, with a phone number of 801-820-5934, and I would love to see you there, even if I'm not there in the middle of winter.
33:53
Uh, hopefully I'll be there during the summer, and we'll be able to say hello, and coordinate, and communicate, and get this bicycle community really tight and popping again. Right on, man. Nice. All right, Mark.
34:05
All right. Excellent. Thanks for being on the show this week, and- Yeah, we needed to talk... we will again catch up sooner than later. Talk to you again. Yeah. Well, if... Thank you for having me.
34:14
Hopefully I wasn't too boring. No, no. [laughs] Hopefully I wasn't any kind of like a depressant or a bummer or anything like that. [laughs] You're doing good, dude. Love you guys. All right. Have missed you like crazy.
34:22
Yeah, I wish we could go ride together. Good. And fucking have a great night. Love you, man. All right, man. Happy holidays. Peace. Bye. Merry Christmas. All right, everybody. Mark Peterson. Likewise.
34:31
[laughs] Happy, happy things. Mark Peterson- Happy, happy days off, everybody... from Ogden, Utah there. Hail Santa. It's good to hear he's doing well again. I know there was some kind of s- scary- That's always scary.
34:40
Always scary... scary, scary moments there. Yeah. So I'm glad that he's back, and thanks again for calling in, Mark.
34:46
And, uh, we'll put a le- link to the Neighborhood Bike Shop on, uh, on the old Instagram, or the, uh, Facebook, whatever. No. All of them. YouTube thing. Come on. Let's do it. Some freaking thing, whatever.
34:55
[laughs] The Instagram is a subsidiary of Facebook, which is a subsidiary of Meta. It's all... So, uh, it's okay. But YouTube is part of the evil empire. They are. YouTube is part of the Google empire- Right on...
35:07
so it's a different part of the empire. All right. Go move into your hole. So next week we're- [laughs]... next week we've got the, uh, Mike McAbee thing. He, he, this is awesome.
35:15
Not only is he a, a cool musician and he plays stuff, but he's also ridden around Lake Michigan. Yeah. He likes to pee outside. He likes to pee outside.
35:23
And, uh, he rode from Castalia, Ohio, to Castalia, Iowa, which is kind of cool. That's like a 600-mile thing. And he used to take his rig, his guitar, his amp, all his shit, to do shows on his bike.
35:36
So I mean- Yeah, yeah... he's, he's the real deal. Yeah, no shit... and it was, it was, it was a fun conversation. He's, he's a very, uh, he's a talky guy and he talks the good stuffy stuff. Nice.
35:45
So that'll be next week. I look forward to that one. Show number, uh, whatever that will be. Talented, fun as hell. And then- Good chat... our fine team is taking off the New Year's Eve time. Well, yeah.
35:55
And then we'll- Holidays... we'll be back with, uh, whatever number it is, 287, on s- on J- January 7th, 2025. So we'll see all y'all next year. Peace. What are you gonna do in this interim? I don't know. I know.
36:10
Make fatbike.com content. Oh, no. Oh, no. I am going on my honeymoon. Oh, no. Oh, you're honeymooning. Oh, you're honeymooning. Oh, yeah. To Nawlins. Nawlins down there. Yes. Well, see if you can run into Big Sheksha.
36:23
That's what I was gonna say, yeah. Do a little Sheksha business down there. Yeah. I've been tracking him on the face place. I'll see him. Yeah. I'll see you. I'll see you. All right, VBS. Later.
36:33
I'll be by MRB, no, most likely. [laughs] Okay. MRB on San Felipe. We'll see you later. [laughs] Bum, bum, bum. There we go. Bum, bum.
36:47
[rock music]
