- 2:22The original air date September the seventeenth of nineteen forty nine and the title
- 2:27the Baton Sinister Get This and Get It Straight. Crime is a sucker's road,
- 2:32and those who travel and wind up in the gut of the prison of
- 2:35the Grave. There was a gorgeous tapestry found under a tomb, and they
- 2:38were all after it, the worried impart of the man with half a face,
- 2:42the Englishman in an la slum, and the lady wearing a green veil.
- 2:46But before it was over, none of them had it, and two
- 2:47of the four was dead. From the pen of Raymond Chandler, outstanding author
- 2:53of crime fiction, comes his most famous character in the Adventures of Philip marmel
- 3:07Oh, with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlaw. We bring you tonight's transcribe
- 3:12story, The Baton Sinister. I'd watched the blood red sun set behind an
- 3:28ugly purple storm out on the ocean, and the weird afterglow that crept into
- 3:31the canyons of the Hollywood Hills made me uneasy. I added emphasis to the
- 3:36disquieting phone call I received at my office. My man named Pollack Schindler min
- 3:39knew was a very capable worldwide broker of bizarre art objects in words that fellow
- 3:45of each other in urgency. He asked me to meet him at my place
- 3:47at once. As I drove to my apartment, I figured the trouble lay
- 3:51ahead, but I didn't realize how close it was until I parked and started
- 3:54out of my car. A bullet smashed the corner my winch here and my
- 3:58duck for covered and hugged it building and headed for the rear, where I
- 4:00was sure I'd seen a gunflash. I was halfway there when the side door
- 4:03flew open and Pollard Shindler himself stopped me. It was white faced and shaking,
- 4:08his eyes, ring by dark blue circles of fatigue. Barlow that shot.
- 4:12Yeah, somebody throw a slug at me? She look from back there.
- 4:14Okay, I was afraid of this. We can't talk here, not
- 4:16now. Come, Let's get in your car and drive hurry. Wait a
- 4:19minute, Wait a minute. What's all this about? Who shot at me?
- 4:21And why? It must have been that lizards five and lost hu?
- 4:26He's furrowed me all away from England model because but I tell you what about
- 4:30it? And be safe right now? We must get away from here.
- 4:33Okay, but watch yourself. Come on. Well, so far, so
- 4:40good. I see that hole in the winchhield. It's lucky it's not in
- 4:43my head. Have you being followed? Not yet anyway, oh Pollot.
- 4:47Last time it was a cloak of came a May and a trip to Honolulu.
- 4:50What is it? This time? It's worse? The tapestry modeled fifteenth
- 4:54century and exquisite worked twenty thousand. There's a museum piece alone, A lot
- 5:00of money for chuck a cloth ah snuffing. I'm getting there around eighty thousand
- 5:03for it from a man named Alfthur Merrit in Seattle. Eighty grand Yes,
- 5:09correct, you see this Merit claims to be a direct descended from Edward,
- 5:13second Duke of York, who felt it ajincour really yeah, he spent a
- 5:16fortune raising his genealogy and collecting family pressures and regards this tapestry as his greatest
- 5:23price. Or HiT's a gorgeous steam bottle depicts the Duke and a gold horse
- 5:29riding to battle beside the king. Want such colors, reds, blues,
- 5:32greens, breast but I'm so tired. I don't think I've slept in weeks.
- 5:41For eighty thousand bucks, you're going to afford to retired Sheendler. How
- 5:44does the guy with itchy trigger finger fit into all this raft that's come He
- 5:48was after the tapestry tour. He got hint of the fact that someone was
- 5:51willing to pay eighty thousand for it. Mart He doesn't know who. I
- 5:56see you found it first. Yes, he's in a sealed tomb on the
- 6:00ruins of a castle in Vales, just minutes ahead of Loft. Why is
- 6:03the tapestry now at this moment. It's in a cheap suitcase checked in a
- 6:08public locker at the Kevenga Boulevard busty book. Now, I want you to
- 6:13pick it up and get it safely to Arthur Merritt. Here, here's the
- 6:15locker key. You take it on a plane leaving in three hours and your
- 6:19money five one hundred dollars bills. Enough enough, Well I find out the
- 6:25Merrit seventy six Rest Streets, Seattle. He'll be expecting you and Marlow.
- 6:30I feel better if you get the tapestry soon and keep it with you ontil
- 6:34the plane time. You're really afraid of this guy laughed, an't you?
- 6:38He'll stop at nodding. I warn you now, I'll get off here at
- 6:42the corner Marrow. Incidentally, when you get the tapestry, don't go back
- 6:46to your apartment loft maybe waiting there. I'm at the Hollywood Crest Hotel,
- 6:53Hollywood Crest. Yeah, call me when the chop is done. Goodbye,
- 6:56Marlow, and good luck you'll need it. The key shinder the left was
- 7:05number four ten, So I drove to the bus station and went in a
- 7:09casual walkthrough. Showed me that locker number four to ten was the last on
- 7:12the left. Then I ambled over to the lunch counter or ordered the sandwich
- 7:15and coffee and sat down the case the rest of the customers. Finally I
- 7:18spotted him, a dark man in ragged clothes with a profile out of Western
- 7:21Asia who was also watching number four ten a profile glanced around nervously and looked
- 7:27away fast when he caught me watching him. I used the key to four
- 7:30ten out of my pocket and slipped it under my sandwich. All the waitress
- 7:32I'd be right back, and started taught him. He saw me coming and
- 7:35made for the back exsit broke into a run when he got to the door.
- 7:38We played follow the leader down the tunnel to the alley behind the bus
- 7:40barn and around the corner. There the game stopped because a claw that belonged
- 7:45down a lobster reached out, grabbed me by the shirt front and pulled me
- 7:46up against eighteen inches of curved Damascus steel, chopping up the shaved with so.
- 7:53I knew then why he showed me only his profile. Half his face
- 7:57was handsome, the other half well, when he spoke, he he's through
- 8:01the flexible half of his mouth. Thanks till my friend or I slichorg gizz
- 8:05it for you. Where is Myron Loft? I don't know. I never
- 8:07met a man up close. That is why you are working for him.
- 8:09Keep using that knife of punctuation. Hell, I admit anything. I followed
- 8:13the fat German. I watched him put the tapestry in one of those lockers
- 8:16inside. Therefore I knew that Loft or his hireling wouldn't be far behind him,
- 8:20and mayor off base. That's myrone, love to you what Indeed,
- 8:24only I know the true value of that tapestry, But it was I who
- 8:28paid for it. But half my face and half my mind. But before
- 8:31I'm through, Loft will know too. Where is he? I don't know,
- 8:33but I wish I were with him. She like you for being stupid,
- 8:37got a Loft and tell him that a car is not dead, but
- 8:41has come back to teach him the price of treachery. This will surprise him
- 8:45now, doubt. And he murdered me so I would not talk. He
- 8:48left me for dead and me a hurtling. I'm conscious of a bridge and
- 8:50a top of braazing oil. It made me like this claw for a hand,
- 8:56a face to frightened demons, But it did not kill me sky Lord
- 9:00and the tapestry itself. Tell him it will bring him nothing but despair.
- 9:05But I have put a curse of worthlessness on it. A car from the
- 9:11alley the shot. Did you see who it was? I car? No,
- 9:15but I didn't have to see it to know. He thinks he has
- 9:18finished it now, but he is wrong. Look look for the button city
- 9:24start what look for what? A car in the duke shield? The button
- 9:30sinister? A car the words baton sinister whatever that meant on his twisted lips,
- 9:43twisted little man dyed. I walked back carefully the way I'd come with
- 9:46lightning. The busty bow was going on as usual. The waitress gave me
- 9:50a hard eye when I sat down at the lunch counter again in a mirror
- 9:54over the back, but told me why I was pasty green from eyes to
- 9:58mouth. I thought that death and an alley still did that to me was
- 10:01strangely gratifying. I got the key fromund of the sandwich, dropped a buck
- 10:05on the counter, and then went to lock up four ten and opened it.
- 10:07Shindler's t haaded suitcase was there. I picked it up, took it
- 10:11over to a stall phone and sat on it while I put in a call
- 10:13Lieutenant Matthews at Homicide. Oh say that again, Model, I don't think
- 10:18I heard you right? Yeah she did, Matthews. I said, a
- 10:20man with half a face named that car was shot in the alley backup coinga
- 10:24bus depot, probably because he knew too much about a tapestry. Yeah,
- 10:28yeah, that's what you said the first time. Who did you got any
- 10:31ideas? Really? Could be a guy named Myron Loft. That's all I
- 10:33know about him, just a name. Okay, I'll send somebody stick around
- 10:37with it film. Hey, hey, lieutenant, yeah, you happen to
- 10:39know what a baton sinister is? H the spell off me with it?
- 10:43Feel never mind, Matthews. I'll call you again before I leave. When
- 10:54I left the bus depot, I drove to my office, took the suitcase
- 10:56upstairs, and after I locked myself in, I opened it on the lamp
- 10:58on my desk. Boles of dazzling cloths spilled out. I remember Chindler saying
- 11:03Duke was riding a gold horse, so I looked for that. Yeah,
- 11:07it was easy to spot, and from there I located his shield. It
- 11:11was deep blue with three white roses on one side and a red lion on
- 11:15the other, and in a set of pointing diagonally from up a right to
- 11:16lower left was a thin line of still deeper blue. That was all I
- 11:20had a chance to see, because a hand in a rubber glove clamped a
- 11:26wet cloth over my face, and the sickly sweet odor went through me like
- 11:33warm oil through a paper bag. One hundred years later, I had a
- 11:45strange dream. I saw a pair of high heeled green swede shoes, and
- 11:50then a woman in a green veil looking at an empty suitcase. It must
- 11:54have been a green because I couldn't move and my eyelids were leaden. When
- 12:00the green veil and green shoes left, everything went black again. Next time
- 12:11it was no dream. I was faced down in my office, copet alone
- 12:16and very sick to my stomach. I'd been chlorophormed. I crawled over to
- 12:20the desk and pulled myself up. The suitcase was open and empty. Somehow
- 12:26I got the phone off the hooked dial of information. In a minute later,
- 12:28I had my client on the wire, Marrow, you sound sick,
- 12:31but he's wrong. I am sick. They're gonna be too. Shinley a
- 12:35tapestry is gone. It was stolen. God, I'm stolen? Yeah?
- 12:37Oh no, no, it can't be you plumbering, stupid Folmno, why
- 12:43did you say? I'm sorry? Screaming and hysteeli. I won't get it
- 12:48back via No, how did it happen? Well? I brought it up
- 12:52here to my office, but somebody was already in here laying for me.
- 12:54I was chloroformed and out for about half an hour, and I came to
- 12:58it was gone. Now listen, you know a man named my car horribly,
- 13:01Scott from Burns a car. No, why did he get it?
- 13:05Yeah? Not the way you think? He was killed at the bus station?
- 13:09What kids, heavens did's loft to it? I don't know that car,
- 13:15thought so, And I'm getting tired of hearing that name lofty. Incidentally,
- 13:18what's a battime? Sinister? Yeah? I ma terribly? But what
- 13:24had that point? It might be important? What is it? Actually?
- 13:26Partly it's simply a short line on a shield or a scutcheon. It runs
- 13:31diagonally from sinister chief to deckster base. What does that mean? From uper
- 13:35right to lower left? Maybe if you're facing the sheet. Yes, it's
- 13:37the mark of fraudulents. Why I was totally to look for the battown sinister
- 13:43by wait a minute, pollen and something on the floor head looks like an
- 13:48envelope. Yeah, there's nothing in it, but it's addressed to Holy smoke.
- 13:54This is address to Myron Loft nine four six South Grand Avenue. L
- 13:58I knew it. I knew twist behind the tapt Morrow. But now we've
- 14:01got a chance to get the text to be back. There is this Grand
- 14:05Avenue. It runs through a slum called Bunker Hill. Any cab driver knows
- 14:09it. I'm going down there now. She good. I'll get there as
- 14:11soon as I can to cover you and marrow. Listen the man, he's
- 14:16a devor be care for Bunker Hill stuck up above downtown. I lay like
- 14:26a water on a debu tanse hand the big street to the tunnel under it
- 14:30or bypassed the years ago left it nothing more than the dingy, isolated attic
- 14:33where the city has worn out cast offs finally end up to die. The
- 14:37big hotels that open on the Swine Street below it all carefully turned their backs
- 14:41on the hill. I parked near Angel's Flight and walked on the yard number
- 14:45side of the street until I spotted nine four six, a crumbling yellow stucco
- 14:48rooming house clung to the hill face from habit only, and I gave the
- 14:52windows a lot of attention to be sure no one was watching, and went
- 14:56out of the corner, crossed and came back. And I need me night
- 15:00light was not at the end of the hole, so I pushed my way
- 15:03through the smells toward the door with a grimy card that set office. I
- 15:05was about the knock when a voice purred from the landing on the stairs behind
- 15:09me. When you turn around, do it slowly? Understand? Oh,
- 15:13perfectly, I dare say you're prolarge shindlers man could be, which makes you
- 15:18myron laugh. Yes, I've been up on the roof watching you expect you
- 15:22to come before long. I suppose you want the tapestry. Now, how's
- 15:24she gets then? And what prices should have decided to offer me? Price
- 15:28your kid hardly. I don't enjoy humor. Perhaps you don't know much about
- 15:31the tapestry. Not much. I know more than I used to. I
- 15:35had quite a chat with that car. A car that's impossible. My exsistant
- 15:41is dead, I know, but he lived long enough to tell me about
- 15:43the baton sinister and the duke shield. Yeah, to lie, my fine
- 15:46fellow, there's no baton sinister on that shield, and it's oh, of
- 15:50course that's sly idiot AKA. I would try something like a baton sinister,
- 15:56But what purpose I can't imagine. Just to make sure that you'd pay for
- 15:58his murder? What's that? Must have been a shock to find out it'd
- 16:02survived that burning truck accident you tried, so you finished them tonight with a
- 16:04bullet. Oh that's strange. How much more do you know along this line
- 16:10enough to make bargaining more than worth your while? And I haven't kept it
- 16:12all in my head? I see for my door is a second on the
- 16:15left. I'll move along now quickly. I see no reason to hurry.
- 16:19I do see what you mean. Although the accent was Oxford, the gestures
- 16:26were strictly scared roll. So as I proceeded myron left and gun into my
- 16:30lord's sagging chamber, I watched carefully for the chance I knew i'd have to
- 16:34take before long. But a small step toward a dark corner told me it
- 16:40wasn't going to be easy. The gentleman with a flexed voice was being very
- 16:44wary about me, now turn it out and faced me quickly, so wary
- 16:47about me, in fact, that the quiet footstep behind him went out.
- 16:49Noticed the footsteps that had been made by a green swede pumped belong to a
- 16:53lady with a veil, also green. I now knew i'd actually seen earlier
- 16:57in my office. When she took her next step, the gun she clenched
- 17:02in her expensively gloved hand was raised high, came down hard early of my
- 17:08dreams. I thank you. That was neat, and believe me, not
- 17:11a moment too soon. He's not dead, isn't. No, it's just
- 17:15how cold? Isn't deep freeze? But aren't we being a little matter of
- 17:19fact about all this? Well? Did you expect pears well from the veil?
- 17:23Yeah, that's where I'm probably being misled. I should concentrate on your
- 17:30green swede shoes. They seem to be more in character, and you seem
- 17:32to be quite ungrateful and gabby. So why don't we just move on some
- 17:37over there? That bundle it could be the tapest tap. Hey lady,
- 17:41you're not after it too? No, I came here to save you alife.
- 17:45I love you come on, mister Robbie, warm hot, this is
- 17:49it all right? Good? Don't get back? Oh no, oh yes,
- 17:55way back, and for safe keeping in the snug little closet there.
- 17:59But that's so much as a peace at the veil, I mean without so
- 18:00much is another word your mouth. I mean, go on inside. It
- 18:04won't hold you for long, but I don't need long anymore. She was
- 18:15so right, didn't hold me for long, because even a misplayed ticcop could
- 18:18you all lose most any given segment of Bunker Hill construction. However, by
- 18:22the time I got to the street, it was lady with veil and bundle
- 18:23tucked underneath her arm, climbing into a cab, and only a tail light's
- 18:26getting out of sight around the corner. So I played the only bedlet.
- 18:30She departed in a cab. Maybe she'd arrived in one, and maybe that
- 18:33one was still in line at the hackstand across the street at the back of
- 18:37the hotel at number four. I connected, Yeah, yeah, sure,
- 18:41the doll with a veil. I brought her here? Why what's that mean
- 18:45to you? Everything? She's my long lost sister. Where'd you pick her
- 18:47up? I can't remember? Okay, okay, here here's five. Not
- 18:51try it. Sure it was a sunset gardens hotel. Villa twelve witches around
- 18:56on the side, but you know what else, Oh what else? I'll
- 19:00bet this five she ain't really assisted at all. I'll bet she's really your
- 19:03white Yeah, you're so wrong, She's really typhoid Mary Jackiet. But I
- 19:07fumigate fast, both inside and out. Goodbye. I was thirty anxious minutes
- 19:18weaving my way through the thick west Brown traffic than any snail could have easily
- 19:22outsprinted before I was finally parked away from Villa twelve, then out of my
- 19:26car and running toward the squadschunk of termite proof Old Spain. But I hope
- 19:30that again meet up with both. The lady who wore a mosquito net for
- 19:32a hat in my client's hard come by Drapery at the bungalow in front of
- 19:36me said no such luck, because it was dark, close, tight,
- 19:38and as quiet as snow falling all the way around until I was in the
- 19:41bank. For each villa had its own junior picnic grounds, complete with barbecue
- 19:45pit. Then from somewhere behind me, I heard it, first a rattle
- 19:49of paper, then a few footsteps high heels that I knew could be the
- 19:52green swede ones on flagstone. After that over either pit, liquid poured on
- 19:57wood, and then sudden flame. It was the lady who shoes I knew,
- 20:02all right, But this time no veil, only a face that might
- 20:04have been pretty if it weren't for the prancing shadows. The flames threw over
- 20:07an expression that was a little more than determination, a little less than psycho.
- 20:11I moved close to her quietly, and when she had the tapestry on
- 20:15wrap and was ready to make a little offering to the fire gods, that
- 20:17took my cue. Marshmallows will taste better, baby, honest you Yeah,
- 20:21little me and thirty eight not so little, don't stand very still, honey,
- 20:23priceless heirloom included. No, I won't. It's going to fire work.
- 20:27That's a matter of opinion. Go on, you big hat, let
- 20:30it go, baby, better way, dirtyeth retingent, Come on, let
- 20:33go, that's better. I come on fire blug you, oh Naomi marsh
- 20:38us Okay, now tell me where you fit in the tapestry or do we
- 20:44shake some more? No? Thanks, I'll tell you what you want to
- 20:48know. Who are you? James Philip Marlowe, Papa oh, a private
- 20:52detective hired the baby sitting with a tapestry. Let's not change the subject.
- 20:55Heay, Okay, getting there. I'm Arthur Merritt's and so lair guy in
- 21:02Seeattle, who's waiting for me to deliver this item as your uncle. My
- 21:04uncle is Jersey. Wait a minute, Wait a minute, let me get
- 21:07this straight. You steal a tapestry, risk your life, play with guns
- 21:11and with people who only play for keeps so you can get a chance to
- 21:15burn eighty thousand bucks where the pantcy needle. My uncle has been throwing away
- 21:18his money on antiques and all this that less of a half a million is
- 21:22one hundred grand. I don't want four fifths of that use for this stinking
- 21:26substitute for wallpaper anything else. Yeah, how long you've been working on this
- 21:30project? This operation? Arson a week came down from Seattle, and I
- 21:36learned that the man my uncle was dealing with his name Poulade Schindler. You
- 21:38can till I've been to Mayor. Now do you mind if I leave?
- 21:42I'm looking forward to bed and a good cry. Eighty thousand dollars worth?
- 21:48Do I go? Yeah? On one condition. Yeah, gun baby,
- 21:52it stays. I watched her until she was around at the front of the
- 22:03bungalow and out of sight, and I grabbed up the tapestry and started to
- 22:07fold it when a sudden flare from the fire threw a crazy spurt of light
- 22:11over the material on my arm, and I saw them on the shield as
- 22:15the Duke of Kent carried. There was no Bedtown Sinister. This was not
- 22:18the same tapestry I'd examined in my office like them. Just to make things
- 22:23all the merrier, I once again heard from Naomi Mark and the even chance
- 22:30that this was a trap, Naomi playing fossom with healthy lungs. I ditched
- 22:33the tapestry in a nearby clump of trees, then gun in hand ran for
- 22:36the front door of Villa twelve. I got there just as a great convertible
- 22:38lights out roughed off and Naomi was climbing back onto her feet. What judges
- 22:42a long list knew the real tapestry? Where is it? The Oh no,
- 22:47you're kidding. Maybe that number you just tried to burn is not the
- 22:49one I started out with tonight. It's minus Baton Sinister minus Who what are
- 22:52you talking? About just this. Maybe you still have the tapestry, and
- 22:56the routine with the flames was done with a phony and strict right for my
- 22:59benefit. You are nuts. No, you listen. When I told you
- 23:02before was the truth? Nothing? But however it happened to work out that
- 23:04I walked off with a phony and you did likewise. I'm sorry, I'll
- 23:07bet the time being all buy it that way. Tell me what went on
- 23:12here? I was about to unlock the door when it happened a hand with
- 23:17a rubber glove. Grab me. Wait a minute, Wait a minute,
- 23:18rubber gloves, rubber glove? Do we say everything twice? Whoever it was
- 23:22obviously didn't want to leave fingerprints or the smell of chlorophone on his hands.
- 23:26He comes to think that I did get a whisk of something funny. How
- 23:29do you know about that in my office when the tapestry was Wait a minute,
- 23:33you were that and you get a look at him? No, there
- 23:34was only a single light on, and you were already out cold when I
- 23:37got there, which must have seen something your stars. After he took the
- 23:41tapestry, then laid an envelope of some kind next to you. I told
- 23:45him to reach way up, got me piled into a heap on your office
- 23:48floor. Envelope I followed, but I lost it. Hey, hey,
- 23:51hold it back up, Naomi, What you say he placed that envelope there
- 23:55next to me. That's what I said. See what I mean. We've
- 23:57got it out, baby, I've got an idea of thought about a bedtion
- 24:00cinnis then what's really going on? Also, it just occurred to me that
- 24:04Myron Love might not remain unconscious forever, and that my client was going to
- 24:07cover me at lost place on Bunker Hill. Wait, what are you going?
- 24:11Mol Once I pick up the tapestry I just hid, which may not
- 24:12be a phony back of Bunker Hill. It's a long kid. Oh no,
- 24:37somebody somebody called it police Brow Tomorrow, Barlow, Thank goodness you're here.
- 24:44I I just shut Myron Love. You did watch Shindler? Yes,
- 24:49good to him? Did Marlow? Way? What's going on in John?
- 24:56Now? Then you can help sweet hat O try to hold it down.
- 25:02It was terrible and Marlow. I came to this place after I didn't hear
- 25:06from you and found out Rich gloom Loft head red Eyed been in. He
- 25:10was on the floor unconscious. So I started to look around for the tapestry.
- 25:14In the meantime, Loft came too, got hold of the gun and
- 25:15rushes at it. Yes, we struggled, and then the convent off for
- 25:21Marlow. What should we do now? Call the police. Yeah, I'll
- 25:25take care of it. You go back into the room there and don't touch
- 25:26anything and see that nobody else does. All right, Marlow, but you
- 25:30have the tapestry. Yeah, I got a Chandler safe and sound. Your
- 25:33worries are over homicide. Matthews speaking Marlow, Matthews, I'm a nine four
- 25:51six South Grand Avenue and sells another body admired and Loft. I mentioned my
- 25:56client Paula Chandler just shot him in self defense, which also clears up that
- 26:00death of that car up behind the bustypo. I mean love got him and
- 26:03then tried for your client but missed. Yeah. Yeah, if you believe
- 26:08my client. Oh Malo, what are you reaching for? You? Very
- 26:15tasty but hard to swallow. Facts One, my client's a liar to my
- 26:18client killed both I con Myron laugh in. Three, I've been set up
- 26:21and used as Nita's chump, Patsy sucker fall guy. They all fit even
- 26:25shot through my windshield for realism. Alan Shindler never had the real tapestry,
- 26:29Matthews, He had only a phony, gave it a meet to deliver,
- 26:32and then swiped it from me, after which he put me on the trail
- 26:33of the real one. Uh huh. So while swiping it back for him
- 26:37like a good private detective, you are you'd come up with the real one.
- 26:40Ah, that's tidy. I'll be right down, Phil. Okay,
- 26:45you told the police what happened to Marrow. Yeah? I told them,
- 26:49mister Shindley, I told them everything. Now there's nothing for us to do.
- 26:55But wait, that does a lieutenant seven fool pages of confession for mister
- 27:11Pollock Chindler very craft deeper. Yeah yeah, thanks money. Oh bring that
- 27:17girl in a couple of minutes with me, right well, Phil, here
- 27:21it is the whole story. Yeah yeah, look followed. Schindler went after
- 27:25the tapestry in England, but Myron Love got there first. However, Shindler
- 27:29was the one who knew where he could sell it way above museum price.
- 27:30So Love had a tuple kit made up and saw to it that Schindler stole
- 27:34it from And it was Zach who added the battime sinister the mark of fraudulents
- 27:38in herald read the fake tapestry. Yeah, but I still don't clearly follow
- 27:44the rest of it, Phil, I mean here in la Oh, well,
- 27:47it wasn't much of a change and other very same song. Love State
- 27:49closed to Shindler all the way back from England, and he watched and he
- 27:52waited until he tigured that Schindler was ready to close his deer you see,
- 27:56Yeah, and he stepped forward and announced that the tapestry Schindler had was a
- 27:59phony ah, and that he'd give him the real one for a healthy cut
- 28:02of the sale price. Uh Loft couldn't go to Merit direct because he didn't
- 28:04know who Merit was, sure, and from Merit was me, the patsy
- 28:08with the best of references. Yeah, just about shouldn't look kill thatac Caromi
- 28:12didn't expect in the scene in the law too, he did so neither one
- 28:15could spill to you it's fact now, yeah, come in, come in
- 28:19now. When did you oh just a minute, miss March and please,
- 28:23when did all this come across to you? Phil? When I got mixed
- 28:26up with the lovely lady here, she told me that the man who would
- 28:30florify me in my office had carefully placed an envelope on the floor next to
- 28:33me, an envelope I later took as a clue From that switch, I
- 28:37started to look around from this, Oh great, hooraysa camp a grill me.
- 28:41What kind of a metal do? I guess? You get a pretty
- 28:42nice one, miss March, And thanks to Monow, you get freedom.
- 28:45You know, we could prefer charges against you like what like what like as
- 28:51salt and battery for slugging Loft Grand lost me for the theft of the tapestry
- 28:55from Loft's place, attempted destruction of Prile. Okay, it's not about those
- 29:00things. Thanks Malo, Thanks Marlow. That your official statement. No more,
- 29:04not even I'm sorry before you go. Well, yes, I'm sorry,
- 29:10all right, real sorry that I missed. Goodbye. It was another
- 29:22hour and my signature was on another dozen official papers before I was free to
- 29:26leave Matthews, who kept the real tapestry, but gave me the one we
- 29:30got back from Paula Shindley, the one with a baton sinister on. It
- 29:33is a souvenir. So by the time I got back to my apartment,
- 29:37it was pushing four o'clock in the morning, and I was tired. I
- 29:41had of a knight that had been jammed full of crooked people who were taking
- 29:45crooked paths half across the world chasing up buck. So tired, in fact,
- 29:51that I didn't notice the Oni Marchant leaning across the door opposite mine until
- 29:55she spoke, Mama, Mama, we could take that tapest you have there,
- 29:59even if, because Tony, in spite of see Alan Peloton goar that
- 30:00before he knows anything about what happened to here, Marlow, smallow, No,
- 30:07smallow, smallow. There was only one thing to do. Put both
- 30:12hands firm on her shoulders, spin the girl around and across my knees.
- 30:18M you like me? Oh well? And I was too tired for even
- 30:23there. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe Bringing You Raymond, Chandler's most famous character
- 30:41and Crime's most deadly enemy, starred Gerald Moore and are produced and transcribed by
- 30:45Norman McDonald. Script is by Meldonella, Robert Mitchell and Gene Lovett. The
- 30:51special music is composed and conducted by Richard Rand. Be sure and be with
- 30:59us next week. When Philip Marlowe says, rains slashing a glass roof an
- 31:04old man's curiosity and an imaginary ins out of place. They all became important
- 31:10when two people died violently so a third could make a killing. Paul Masterson
- 31:33speaking, this is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System, Welcome back poor Marlowe
- 31:51talking about corrupt people, and then in incomes that girl suggesting that Marlowe help
- 31:59her cheat the uncle out of eighty thousand dollars. And I love how the
- 32:05lapd lets Marlow take that whole thing home as a souvenir. Seriously, I
- 32:12love this episode. There are just so many great classic characters in there,
- 32:16and it was a different conclusion. Plus on Johnny Dollar, I've been talking
- 32:22about the lack of continuity between shows, and here we have a returning client
- 32:27who this time turns out to be up to no good, and Marlow brings
- 32:34him in in a different way. Usually it ends with some big confrontation,
- 32:37but here he subtly deceives him and just sets it up for the police to
- 32:42go ahead and bring him in. It's nice to have a change of pace
- 32:45every now and then, and this episode definitely does it. Now we turn
- 32:51to some listener comments and feedback. Bobby Lee comments, I'm becoming a bigger
- 32:58Philip Marlow fan ever episode. And then we also received a few comments on
- 33:02our Thinman special. We received this from Linda who says, we love these
- 33:10old radio shows, things so much simpler and enjoy the country first attitude,
- 33:15and Gina says, I'm glad these shows are around for other generations to enjoy.
- 33:21Well. Thanks so much for your comments. Definitely appreciate them, and
- 33:24that will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with Nick Carter and
- 33:29then join us again next Wednesday for another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow.
