- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, Brett, A little different and a little different front
- 0:13Speaker 1: end for you, the Sweet Life. Normally we would do
- 0:16Speaker 1: now reporting or something like that for you, but since
- 0:19Speaker 1: we figured since you wrote an article on Buster Posey
- 0:21Speaker 1: making a move up to the suite as President of
- 0:24Speaker 1: Baseball officer of the Giants, we introduced you with the
- 0:26Speaker 1: Sweet Life, So welcome, Bridgeroli. Apparently from Michigan State University.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Not go blue. I don't know what they say, but uh, hello, No, hi, guys.
- 0:37Speaker 2: They say go green, go white.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Yes, as we say, go blue is probably the worst
- 0:41Speaker 3: thing you could say to someone from Michigan State.
- 0:43Speaker 1: No. I don't know what they said, though, but I
- 0:45Speaker 1: didn't know what they said in Michigan State because it's
- 0:48Speaker 1: like all you ever hear is about Michigan and go blue.
- 0:50Speaker 1: So I didn't know what the I would have said,
- 0:52Speaker 1: go sparty, but I don't think that's right.
- 0:55Speaker 2: You could say go Sparta. That would be totally fine too,
- 0:57Speaker 2: but yeah, go blue is enough. Yes, I went to
- 0:59Speaker 2: my chicken steak.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Guys.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I swam at Michigan State, so big, big Michigan State Athletics.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Person, do you swim with the pool was frozen? How
- 1:07Speaker 1: do you do you go under.
- 1:08Speaker 2: We swim out. It's not even a joke. We swim
- 1:10Speaker 2: outside the outdoor pool until November. There would be snow
- 1:12Speaker 2: coming down and you would just go as quick as
- 1:14Speaker 2: you could from the door into the pool because the
- 1:17Speaker 2: pool was heated, but obviously the air around it was not,
- 1:20Speaker 2: so we moved inside after that. But November in Michigan
- 1:24Speaker 2: gets pretty cold, especially in the mornings, so it toughened
- 1:27Speaker 2: me up for those rough winters in the press box
- 1:29Speaker 2: in April, guys, for Toronto and April. Every time I
- 1:32Speaker 2: was on the bea, it's like, oh god, Toronto and April.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Yeah, inside it really was re tough getting there. Oh
- 1:39Speaker 1: you had to walk. Sorry, sorry, you had to take
- 1:42Speaker 1: the car, you had to take the taxi down into
- 1:44Speaker 1: the loading dog you know inside. So yeah, it's tough, tough, tough,
- 1:48Speaker 1: tough times for these reporters, KP. You'll learn one day
- 1:51Speaker 1: as a media member how tough the media always has it.
- 1:53Speaker 1: They'll always let you know, oh rough travel day to day.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I got in at noon and got to sleep till two.
- 1:59Speaker 1: So anyway, let's talk buster posey here. I'm a medium
- 2:03Speaker 1: a guy, now, Britt, I understand the rulers of rough
- 2:06Speaker 1: travel life. Okay, let's get into this Buster Posey article
- 2:11Speaker 1: that you wrote. It's one of the more fascinating things
- 2:12Speaker 1: for me because as a former catcher, former player, you know,
- 2:15Speaker 1: people say, do you want to manage? I think being
- 2:17Speaker 1: in charge of a team would be way cooler, meaning
- 2:20Speaker 1: getting to make all the decisions. And I always thought
- 2:22Speaker 1: it was fascinating to see how ex players do we
- 2:25Speaker 1: have Chris Young, obviously, we have Craig Breslow, we have
- 2:27Speaker 1: Buster Posey, and Buster's kind of the poster child because
- 2:30Speaker 1: he was a franchise icon for the Giants. So what
- 2:33Speaker 1: did you figure out now that? And how complicated is
- 2:35Speaker 1: this situation with him now?
- 2:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I think two things can be true. Regressed. I
- 2:40Speaker 2: think it's early in his legacy. It's only the second year,
- 2:42Speaker 2: and most president of mixedbal operations nowadays get four or
- 2:45Speaker 2: five years before we really evaluate them. Buster happened to
- 2:48Speaker 2: sign a three year deal, but because he's part ownership,
- 2:51Speaker 2: I don't think that really matters. I think he will
- 2:54Speaker 2: continue to oversee them as long as they think that
- 2:56Speaker 2: he's the guy. But what's interesting is you mentioned us
- 3:00Speaker 2: Young and Craig Breslow, Craig Breslow went to the Cubs,
- 3:02Speaker 2: Chris Young went and spent some time in the commissioner's office.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And also Chris Young was under John Daniels before they
- 3:08Speaker 2: fired John Daniels, so in both of those scenarios they
- 3:10Speaker 2: had a little bit of experience before they got the
- 3:13Speaker 2: head job. Buster went directly from playing to president, and
- 3:18Speaker 2: there really wasn't a whole lot of other president for it,
- 3:20Speaker 2: except for Derek Jeter, who obviously went from playing to
- 3:23Speaker 2: CEO of the Marlins. Derek Jeter is also an icon,
- 3:26Speaker 2: won a lot of World Series, but he didn't win
- 3:28Speaker 2: them for the Marlins. He won them for the Yankees.
- 3:31Speaker 2: So what Posey is doing is virtually unprecedented. Chris Young
- 3:35Speaker 2: isn't like it would be like Nolan Ryan taking over
- 3:37Speaker 2: the Texas Rangers. You would need that stature of a player.
- 3:42Speaker 2: David Ortiz the sign he's going to be president of
- 3:44Speaker 2: the Boston Red Sox, right, So there's all these different
- 3:47Speaker 2: factors here, and I think to some extent Buster has
- 3:49Speaker 2: been graded harshly because people thought he was going to
- 3:52Speaker 2: step in and did what he did as a player,
- 3:55Speaker 2: which is win three World Series in five years and
- 3:57Speaker 2: be a savior and be an icon, and it's a
- 4:00Speaker 2: lot harder to build an organization. I think he's learning
- 4:03Speaker 2: that firsthand than it is for all of us to
- 4:07Speaker 2: sit here and say, well, Buster's just got to go
- 4:08Speaker 2: in and sign a few big name players and that's it.
- 4:11Speaker 2: And there has been a lot of big swings, and
- 4:14Speaker 2: there's been some hits, and there's been some misses, and
- 4:16Speaker 2: I just think it's fascinating to look at where he's at.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It's certainly an inflection point right now for the Giants
- 4:23Speaker 2: in terms of where do they go from here and
- 4:25Speaker 2: how do they manage this roster to be a winner
- 4:28Speaker 2: in a division that, let's face it, is an incredibly
- 4:31Speaker 2: difficult division because you have the Dodgers.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Do you believe is he getting criticized more? You talked
- 4:37Speaker 3: about taking some big swings and misses. You believe he's
- 4:40Speaker 3: getting more criticized for the hiring of Tony Vitella, or
- 4:43Speaker 3: acquiring some of those veteran guys, the Rafael Devers, signing
- 4:48Speaker 3: a Matt Chapman, the Williadomas moves.
- 4:51Speaker 4: I think the.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Potello was probably the most criticism. And I think you
- 4:55Speaker 2: can look at Adamis and Chapman endeavors now and say
- 4:58Speaker 2: that maybe that wasn't a good idea, But at the
- 5:00Speaker 2: time people universally praised Buster getting the Chapman deal done
- 5:05Speaker 2: and kind of overstepping far hans Ad, who was in
- 5:07Speaker 2: charge of baseball operations at the time. People understood the
- 5:10Speaker 2: Devers deal for what it was, which was making a
- 5:12Speaker 2: trade that was probably going to look good on the
- 5:14Speaker 2: front end, but on the back end of that long
- 5:16Speaker 2: of a deal wasn't going to look great. But they
- 5:18Speaker 2: were getting the big name slugger, the big name free
- 5:20Speaker 2: agent that they couldn't attract right, so they traded for
- 5:23Speaker 2: him a Dames. They are again going out getting offense.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Devers and a Damis are still profile ast two of
- 5:28Speaker 2: their better offensive players, So I think on the surface,
- 5:31Speaker 2: every one of those moves was defensible. I think Tony
- 5:35Speaker 2: Battello's getting him as manager the year when there were
- 5:38Speaker 2: nine managerial openings and for a team that was a
- 5:41Speaker 2: win now team, when they fired Bob Melvin and said
- 5:44Speaker 2: the standards were high and they missed the playoffs, I
- 5:46Speaker 2: think that was probably the most in a vacuum, head
- 5:49Speaker 2: scratching decision. And also, guys, I think that's probably the
- 5:52Speaker 2: biggest decision you can make as a president or a
- 5:55Speaker 2: GM is who is going to be in your dugout,
- 5:57Speaker 2: Who is going to set the tone, who is going
- 5:59Speaker 2: to set the cult culture. I think that was probably
- 6:02Speaker 2: the biggest risk of them all because everyone whips on
- 6:05Speaker 2: free agency. Everyone makes trades great, but then don't age well.
- 6:09Speaker 2: But for me, I think the manager position was probably
- 6:13Speaker 2: the one that was the riskiest for Buster, And certainly
- 6:16Speaker 2: right now you look at it and and it just
- 6:18Speaker 2: has not worked out.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Was this one hundred percent Buster's call on Vitello? Does
- 6:25Speaker 1: he did the ownership? Did anyone else have any say in?
- 6:27Speaker 1: This was his? Buster's call? Because he's only been there.
- 6:31Speaker 1: He has been there less than a year. But you know,
- 6:33Speaker 1: we're hearing rumblings. People are starting to say will he
- 6:35Speaker 1: be there next year? He's had some quotes from the
- 6:38Speaker 1: beginning of the year. He talks a lot. We all
- 6:40Speaker 1: know that which we love is the media, right, but
- 6:43Speaker 1: sometimes he says some things and a lot of people
- 6:44Speaker 1: are like, wait, what is he talking about? So was
- 6:46Speaker 1: this Busters higher alone for Tony Vitello?
- 6:50Speaker 2: Well, I think that a couple things. People forget that
- 6:54Speaker 2: when this search went down. Nick Conley was the guy
- 6:57Speaker 2: and they had kind of tabbed him, and Nick Conley,
- 6:59Speaker 2: currently with the Texas Rangers' front office, chose to take
- 7:03Speaker 2: himself out of the running, and once that happened, it
- 7:05Speaker 2: became very clear that it was going to be Tony Mattello.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And I think it was a collaborative group within that
- 7:10Speaker 2: front office. But one thing I learned from talking to
- 7:13Speaker 2: dozens of people inside the organization and out is that
- 7:16Speaker 2: Buster is the final say. Buster is not just the
- 7:19Speaker 2: face of the organization and a figurehead. He makes the decisions.
- 7:23Speaker 2: He is decisive. That is one thing that people consistently said.
- 7:26Speaker 2: So at the end of the day, this was Buster
- 7:28Speaker 2: who made this call. And I think on the surface,
- 7:32Speaker 2: the way they defended it and why he thought Tony
- 7:34Speaker 2: was the guy and still could be the guy could
- 7:36Speaker 2: grow into this role certainly was the culture. And he
- 7:39Speaker 2: thought that what he did in Tennessee, in creating a culture,
- 7:42Speaker 2: in recruiting guys, in what he was able to build there,
- 7:46Speaker 2: was what he wanted to build with the giants. I
- 7:48Speaker 2: think there have been some very public growing pains when
- 7:51Speaker 2: it comes to bullpen management, when it comes to leading
- 7:53Speaker 2: guys who aren't seventeen to twenty two years old and
- 7:56Speaker 2: you're talking about guys who are in their thirties making
- 7:58Speaker 2: thirty million dollars a year. I think that has been
- 8:01Speaker 2: a little bit different, but that is what Buster was
- 8:04Speaker 2: trying to do, is create this culture and going with
- 8:07Speaker 2: a new manager I think he thought would bring some energy.
- 8:10Speaker 2: I do think Bettello is getting better. I do think
- 8:12Speaker 2: he's growing into this role. But I think what people
- 8:15Speaker 2: around baseball questioned at the time, and it is a
- 8:18Speaker 2: fair criticism, is whether that was the right move for
- 8:21Speaker 2: a Giants team that was built to win. Now that
- 8:25Speaker 2: fired Bob Melvin because they missed the playoffs in back
- 8:28Speaker 2: to back years, and because Buster said our bar's up here,
- 8:31Speaker 2: we have a very high bar. I think it's then
- 8:33Speaker 2: hard to rectify that with what has transpired this year.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Let's talk Fabletics, shall we. They have apparel for every season.
- 8:44Speaker 5: We're wearing it as we talk about it. It's soft,
- 8:46Speaker 5: it's comfortable. I wear it on the show sometimes on FT.
- 8:49Speaker 5: What else do you love about itcrats.
- 8:51Speaker 6: Well, I have it on right now and I'm all
- 8:53Speaker 6: about quality. But you know what, you know how good
- 8:57Speaker 6: your clothes are when you're a parent and your kids
- 9:00Speaker 6: keep stealing all of it. My daughter stole the sweatshirt.
- 9:03Speaker 6: My son sold one of my t shirts. So it's
- 9:06Speaker 6: gotta be nice looking.
- 9:07Speaker 5: And if it gets a little bit chillier, then it's
- 9:10Speaker 5: layering season and they've got layers for the fall. Shop
- 9:14Speaker 5: now at fabletics dot com, slash foul to get seventy
- 9:17Speaker 5: to eighty percent off everything when you sign up as
- 9:20Speaker 5: a new VIP. Take a quick style quiz and be
- 9:22Speaker 5: sure to select foul when prompted to unlock this offer.
- 9:26Speaker 5: This is a limited time offer, so do not wait again.
- 9:29Speaker 5: That's fabletics dot Com slash foul for seventy to eighty
- 9:35Speaker 5: percent off everything as a new VIP.
- 9:39Speaker 4: All right.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Dating back to the rumors of Aaron Judge signing in
- 9:42Speaker 3: Sansco not signing in San Francisco, Sama Tisco is a tough.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Place to hit offensively.
- 9:48Speaker 3: It's also the city has gone a little bit downhill.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna say that nicely.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Does Buster Posey and his front office have a plan
- 9:55Speaker 3: of a better way of attracting free agents?
- 9:59Speaker 2: That's that great question. I don't know if they have
- 10:01Speaker 2: a specific plan in place other than winning, right. I
- 10:04Speaker 2: think the only thing, the only way you get guys
- 10:06Speaker 2: to come there is if you're going to win and
- 10:08Speaker 2: if you're going to make them better. And that's I
- 10:10Speaker 2: think what you sell people on, whether it's a pitcher
- 10:12Speaker 2: or a hitter, you sell them on the organization's success,
- 10:16Speaker 2: and you sell them on Listen, we think you should
- 10:18Speaker 2: tweak this or do this with your delivery or your
- 10:21Speaker 2: batting stance, and we think that this will happen. These
- 10:23Speaker 2: are the numbers we have projected for you. So I
- 10:26Speaker 2: think a lot of the proof of that stuff is
- 10:28Speaker 2: in the put in. I also think for the Giants,
- 10:30Speaker 2: and Buster said this numerous times, that they have to
- 10:32Speaker 2: build from within, that their farm system has to be
- 10:36Speaker 2: a big source of how they get better, how they
- 10:38Speaker 2: get younger, and we're starting to see that. Baseball America
- 10:41Speaker 2: yesterday said they were the fourth best farm system. That's
- 10:44Speaker 2: up from about the middle of the pack. To start
- 10:45Speaker 2: the season, we saw the trade deadline them trade not
- 10:48Speaker 2: only free agents but also players under club control. We
- 10:52Speaker 2: saw them kind of emphasize getting younger collecting prospects. Now,
- 10:55Speaker 2: the issue is going to be that Chapman, Devers, Adamees
- 10:58Speaker 2: are only getting older and they're expensive, so they're going
- 11:01Speaker 2: to have to, in my mind, spend next year maybe
- 11:04Speaker 2: papering over problems with free agents, but then looking to
- 11:07Speaker 2: the future, looking at busters fourth, fifth, sixth year. If
- 11:11Speaker 2: he stays in that position, I think that's when you're
- 11:13Speaker 2: going to see those young guys that are in low
- 11:16Speaker 2: A ball, those young prospects that are highly touted come up,
- 11:19Speaker 2: and that might be a time for the organization to say, Okay,
- 11:22Speaker 2: we're selling off these big contracts. Our young guys are
- 11:24Speaker 2: here and there in the way, But I think the
- 11:26Speaker 2: next year or two might be like a little bit
- 11:28Speaker 2: of ugly transitions as they move forward. They certainly have
- 11:32Speaker 2: the money and could spend the money to compete next year.
- 11:35Speaker 2: And his Buster reminded me several times the years they
- 11:38Speaker 2: didn't win the World Series, they didn't make the playoffs,
- 11:40Speaker 2: So a lot can change from one year to the next,
- 11:42Speaker 2: especially when you have the resources of a San Francisco
- 11:45Speaker 2: Giants team. I do think they're going to go out
- 11:47Speaker 2: and have to fix the pitching that's really been what's
- 11:49Speaker 2: doomed them is that relief pitching. But I think as
- 11:52Speaker 2: you look at the health of this organization moving forward,
- 11:55Speaker 2: it's all going to stem from what they've done in
- 11:58Speaker 2: the minor leagues and whether or not Buster gets a
- 12:00Speaker 2: chance to see that through. I'm not sure they cannot
- 12:03Speaker 2: afford another season like they had this year. But I
- 12:06Speaker 2: think as they turn this corner, they have to look
- 12:09Speaker 2: at it as getting back to pitching defense and just
- 12:11Speaker 2: getting a lot.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Younger bright as somebody that knows that the Giants fans
- 12:16Speaker 1: can be a little bit not nice to people at times.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Do they have the patients? Do they have the patience
- 12:23Speaker 1: for that? The Giants fans have the patience to wait
- 12:26Speaker 1: three four more years?
- 12:27Speaker 4: Right?
- 12:27Speaker 1: Because this is every week we have GMS. We have
- 12:30Speaker 1: Jim Bowden on, we have Jim Duqutt, we have Dan Dukett,
- 12:32Speaker 1: all these guys who've been GMS, and it's always the
- 12:34Speaker 1: new wave of GMS is, oh, give me five years
- 12:37Speaker 1: and then or give me three years to clean it
- 12:39Speaker 1: out and then give me five years, so then I
- 12:41Speaker 1: really get eight years to get my players in. Well,
- 12:44Speaker 1: the Giants are a win now franchise, especially when they
- 12:46Speaker 1: look up and they see, oh, the Dodgers are winning
- 12:48Speaker 1: every year, Dodgers, Dodgers, Dodgers being thrown down their throat.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Do they have the patience to wait two or three,
- 12:54Speaker 1: four more years.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I think that's a great question.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I think that's the reason they haven't embraced rebuild to
- 13:00Speaker 2: begin with. I think had they really been honest with themselves,
- 13:05Speaker 2: they would have maybe let far Han after they had
- 13:07Speaker 2: that terrific year and then they kind of struggled, they
- 13:09Speaker 2: would have maybe let far Han just kind of sell
- 13:12Speaker 2: off some pieces and rebuild and start back over. I
- 13:15Speaker 2: think Buster looked at this team, and you know, as
- 13:18Speaker 2: early as last year when they started off really well,
- 13:20Speaker 2: and said, we are a win now team. We're going
- 13:22Speaker 2: to push our chips in. I think this fan base
- 13:25Speaker 2: hasn't seen a rebuild, and I think at this point
- 13:27Speaker 2: in time, they're not really set up because of the
- 13:30Speaker 2: core that they owe so much money to in the infield,
- 13:32Speaker 2: to be a rebuilding team. So I think realistically they
- 13:36Speaker 2: have to continue to go for it while also being
- 13:39Speaker 2: really good and really judicious with their prospects down below,
- 13:42Speaker 2: and that's a tough thing to juggle. We've seen an
- 13:44Speaker 2: executive struggle to do that. We saw Hein Bloom with
- 13:46Speaker 2: Boston really struggled to keep the Red Sox really as
- 13:50Speaker 2: a competitive team on the field. And then also improve
- 13:52Speaker 2: them in the minor league system. It's a tough juggling act.
- 13:55Speaker 2: The Tampa Bay Rays are really good at that. Obviously,
- 13:57Speaker 2: they've won a nine in a row. They're also ranked
- 14:00Speaker 2: the number one system. Eric Neander's one of the best
- 14:02Speaker 2: executives in the game. We're asking Buster Posey, who had
- 14:05Speaker 2: no front office experience before taking this role, to do
- 14:08Speaker 2: what is probably the most difficult thing in baseball, which
- 14:11Speaker 2: is to win now but also set the organization up
- 14:14Speaker 2: for the future. And so I think that is also
- 14:16Speaker 2: what's making this whole situation difficult.
- 14:18Speaker 4: Right.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Most of the time, when you come in and you're
- 14:21Speaker 2: a president, you're inheriting like Peter Bendex and or Paul Taboni,
- 14:25Speaker 2: and you have the five years because you got to
- 14:27Speaker 2: burn it to the studs. We are grading Buster a
- 14:29Speaker 2: little bit on a curve because we feel like the
- 14:32Speaker 2: Giants should be good now because they're constantly built to
- 14:35Speaker 2: win now. And now we're being told, well, we care
- 14:37Speaker 2: about the minor league system. So it's a really interesting
- 14:40Speaker 2: point that they're at right now. I don't know if
- 14:42Speaker 2: the fan base would be okay with saying, hey, we're
- 14:45Speaker 2: gonna be bad for three years. But I don't think
- 14:46Speaker 2: the Giants have to do that. I think they have
- 14:48Speaker 2: the money to compete for a wildcard team next year
- 14:51Speaker 2: and to also be good down below. And it's worth
- 14:53Speaker 2: pointing out, guys that as bad as the Giants have
- 14:55Speaker 2: been this year, like they've never been over five hundred
- 14:57Speaker 2: all year, they are still six best in base in
- 15:00Speaker 2: home attendance, They're drawing over thirty six thousand fans a night.
- 15:03Speaker 2: There is no Oakland A's anymore. They are the only
- 15:06Speaker 2: team in the Bay Area, and so I think that
- 15:08Speaker 2: also affords them the ability to maybe go out and
- 15:11Speaker 2: take more risks, because if you want to see a
- 15:12Speaker 2: baseball game, you're going to see the Giants. There is
- 15:15Speaker 2: no other alternative.
- 15:17Speaker 1: You're not going to Sacramento.
- 15:21Speaker 2: No, I don't think you're on a Sacramento to see that.
- 15:23Speaker 2: So you know they have a monopoly on that market.
- 15:26Speaker 2: They're also one of the three teams that own the stadium.
- 15:29Speaker 2: They have a lot of money. They were ranked top
- 15:31Speaker 2: five and the latest Forbes valuations like their ey team
- 15:35Speaker 2: that I think, and I think we do this with
- 15:36Speaker 2: David Stearns too, is like if you're inheriting Peter Mendix
- 15:39Speaker 2: and the Marlins. We're going to grade you on a
- 15:41Speaker 2: different scale than if you inherit a team that has
- 15:44Speaker 2: the resources to compete. Right, No one wants to sit
- 15:47Speaker 2: through a five year plan of David Stearns like you're
- 15:50Speaker 2: in charge of the Mets. It's the same thing with
- 15:51Speaker 2: Buster Posey with the Giants. Yes, this is a hard
- 15:54Speaker 2: thing to turn around. Yes it's only second year, but
- 15:57Speaker 2: fans see the Giants as this story for franchise, as
- 16:00Speaker 2: a group that has a big payroll, it's not afraid
- 16:02Speaker 2: to spend, and they want them turned around, and they
- 16:05Speaker 2: want them turned around quickly.
- 16:08Speaker 3: You kind of answered my question. But are we having
- 16:10Speaker 3: this conversation because it is Buster Posey? Are we having
- 16:13Speaker 3: this conversation because he has no presidential experience? Are we
- 16:18Speaker 3: having this conversation if the Giants would have gone out
- 16:20Speaker 3: and got someone from a different organization that maybe sat
- 16:23Speaker 3: underneath the president.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 16:26Speaker 2: I think, well we're having this conversation because I was
- 16:29Speaker 2: interested and wrote a story about this. But I think
- 16:31Speaker 2: that if you look at it, it's a couple of
- 16:33Speaker 2: different things. If it wasn't Buster Posey in charge and
- 16:36Speaker 2: it was a far hanziety type but it wasn't still
- 16:39Speaker 2: far Han, who had been there for I think seven years.
- 16:41Speaker 2: If they had hired somebody else knew, we'd say, this
- 16:43Speaker 2: is only their second year, let's give them some time.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Because it's Buster and he was an icon. I think
- 16:48Speaker 2: people thought he was going to save the franchise. I
- 16:51Speaker 2: don't think people realized that they weren't really in this
- 16:53Speaker 2: grade of a spot to begin with, So that, I
- 16:56Speaker 2: think is one piece of this. I think another piece
- 16:59Speaker 2: of this is that the Giants are a group of
- 17:02Speaker 2: fans who win, who are used to winning, who won
- 17:05Speaker 2: three World Series in five years, outside of like the
- 17:07Speaker 2: Dodgers right now, I mean they were an absolute die
- 17:10Speaker 2: and the Houston Astros, like, we're looking at a dynasty.
- 17:12Speaker 2: So the people that grew up with that expect that.
- 17:15Speaker 2: And the Giants right now are headed toward their fifth
- 17:18Speaker 2: non winning season. That's the most they've had in their history.
- 17:20Speaker 2: They've never had five non winning seasons in a row.
- 17:23Speaker 2: So that's another fact. Is like the Natives are getting
- 17:26Speaker 2: restless and they would like to see the Giants return
- 17:28Speaker 2: to glory. So I think that there's a lot of
- 17:31Speaker 2: different factors at play. And yes, Buster doesn't have the
- 17:34Speaker 2: experience and so this is also a big risk, even
- 17:37Speaker 2: though it's an icon like Buster Posey. So there's a
- 17:39Speaker 2: lot of different things that I think make the situation
- 17:42Speaker 2: so unique and so fascinating as we look at the
- 17:45Speaker 2: beginning of this Buster Posy era.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's amazing. You don't see it happen very often.
- 17:53Speaker 1: This is why it's so fascinating to me that someone
- 17:55Speaker 1: on this level goes into the front office. Nolan and
- 17:57Speaker 1: Ryan did do it. He was the president of the
- 17:59Speaker 1: Raging Jersey. He was president of the Astros, but he
- 18:02Speaker 1: wasn't the day to day baseball guy. I don't think
- 18:04Speaker 1: that Buster Posey is right. I think Nolan probably had
- 18:07Speaker 1: a say in it, but he had John Daniels when
- 18:09Speaker 1: I was in Texas, right, and he had other people
- 18:12Speaker 1: in Houston that would make the day to day decisions,
- 18:16Speaker 1: and he was just kind of I'm in charge, and
- 18:18Speaker 1: I got the sponsors to come in. So you don't
- 18:20Speaker 1: see this happen. I can only look back and see
- 18:23Speaker 1: I think of Ozzie Gean, right, because I played for
- 18:25Speaker 1: Ozzy and he just had his number retire. A player
- 18:28Speaker 1: that was not he wasn't a good of a player
- 18:30Speaker 1: as Buster Posey, Right, but then he comes back to
- 18:32Speaker 1: manage we win a World Series and then he gets everything.
- 18:35Speaker 1: But he also got fired. Well, no, he didn't quit,
- 18:40Speaker 1: but he didn't get fired. I don't know he left. Okay,
- 18:43Speaker 1: he didn't leave on great terms. Let's just say that. Right,
- 18:45Speaker 1: So it ends. And that's the thing that I think
- 18:48Speaker 1: is so fascinating is will Giants fans still love Buster
- 18:51Speaker 1: Posey if this doesn't work the way they did before?
- 18:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they will. I think they should. You're
- 18:57Speaker 2: right with Nolan Ryan, Like that was back in the
- 18:59Speaker 2: day when a president was like the real president of business. Right,
- 19:02Speaker 2: We've now seen this evolve into president of baseball operations. Right,
- 19:07Speaker 2: that has now become a thing over the last decade
- 19:10Speaker 2: or so that you know that person is in charge
- 19:12Speaker 2: of baseball operations. Same thing with Jeter. Jeter was CEO,
- 19:15Speaker 2: but then he hired Kim Ing, so it was a
- 19:17Speaker 2: little bit of a different situation. I think Giants fans
- 19:20Speaker 2: will still and should still appreciate and love Buster Posey
- 19:24Speaker 2: for a couple of reasons. Like one, as I wrote
- 19:26Speaker 2: my story, he didn't have to do this, Like he
- 19:28Speaker 2: could have gone fished, grown a beard showed up, the
- 19:31Speaker 2: World Series reunions, and like his legacy would have been intact.
- 19:34Speaker 2: He wanted to do this because he wants the Giants
- 19:37Speaker 2: to win so badly, and he feels like he could
- 19:40Speaker 2: do a better job than far On and than anyone else,
- 19:42Speaker 2: and that he can be the guy to restore them
- 19:44Speaker 2: back to their glory. And there's a certain amount of
- 19:47Speaker 2: respect for that, Like he is putting it on the line,
- 19:49Speaker 2: he's putting his name out there. He could have stayed
- 19:51Speaker 2: in ownership right and just been this like silent guy
- 19:54Speaker 2: behind the strings, behind the scenes, pulling strings, but he
- 19:57Speaker 2: wanted to be the guy. And with that comes the negative,
- 20:00Speaker 2: and with that comes to the risk. And I think
- 20:02Speaker 2: people should appreciate that a franchise icon cares enough to
- 20:06Speaker 2: want to put skin in the game, and that's what
- 20:08Speaker 2: Buster is doing. He's probably gonna go to Cooper Sound,
- 20:11Speaker 2: maybe as early as next year when he's on the ballot,
- 20:13Speaker 2: and that is such a unique thing. I don't think
- 20:15Speaker 2: it takes away from what he did as a player,
- 20:17Speaker 2: but I think the bar is up here in terms
- 20:19Speaker 2: of adding to his legacy, right, Like, if he doesn't
- 20:21Speaker 2: win as an executive, if he doesn't win a World
- 20:23Speaker 2: series as an executive that will be seen as a
- 20:26Speaker 2: failure because of what he was as a player. He
- 20:29Speaker 2: was such a winner as a player, and because the
- 20:31Speaker 2: Giants are, as he said, a organization of high standards.
- 20:34Speaker 2: So I don't think this should tarnish his legacy. I
- 20:37Speaker 2: don't think this should take away from anything he did
- 20:39Speaker 2: as a player. But I do think this is fascinating
- 20:42Speaker 2: because it is such a risk. He doesn't need the money,
- 20:44Speaker 2: he doesn't need the spotlight. He's doing this for the
- 20:46Speaker 2: right reasons. Will it have the right outcome? We don't know.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Yeah, well, Britt, you're comparing him to Derek Jeter. That
- 20:52Speaker 1: didn't go so well for him as few years in Miami.
- 20:55Speaker 1: So let's hope that it goes better for Buster than
- 20:57Speaker 1: it does for what Derek Jeter did. If you haven't
- 20:59Speaker 1: seen what David Sampson said about Derek Jeter at wow,
- 21:02Speaker 1: that's that was not nice. I'll just say I'll I'll
- 21:05Speaker 1: just leave it at that that David Sampson took some
- 21:07Speaker 1: some real shots at the captain. So, Frett, thank you
- 21:10Speaker 1: so much. It's always a pleasure to see you in
- 21:12Speaker 1: your Michigan Blue. We really appreciate it. If you want

- 21:25Speaker 1: discussing this just completely fascinating article.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Thanks guys, thanks for having me.

- 22:44Speaker 7: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 22:47Speaker 7: Ken Rosenthal here with my friend and colleague Alana Rizzo. Alana,
- 22:51Speaker 7: Our friend and colleague Joel Sherman wrote a column I
- 22:54Speaker 7: don't know about two weeks ago in which he was
- 22:56Speaker 7: talking about the Red Sox and he was saying, man,
- 22:59Speaker 7: it's a long season and we all forget it always,
- 23:03Speaker 7: and the Red Sox for one example.
- 23:05Speaker 4: The Blue Jays will talk about them there another. But
- 23:08Speaker 4: the one we want.
- 23:08Speaker 7: To start the show with is the San Diego Padres
- 23:13Speaker 7: from the what y Yeah?
- 23:15Speaker 8: The latest in terms of this right coming back from
- 23:18Speaker 8: the dead.
- 23:19Speaker 9: Tell me more?
- 23:20Speaker 4: Well, they won.
- 23:21Speaker 7: Fifteen of nineteen and if you remember mid June, mid June,
- 23:25Speaker 7: not that long ago, six weeks ago, they were last
- 23:28Speaker 7: in the National League and runs per game.
- 23:30Speaker 4: Short time after that, the rotation was in tatters.
- 23:33Speaker 7: Michael King, a guy who is really their mooth, solid starter,
- 23:39Speaker 7: was kind of holding up the rotation. A number of
- 23:42Speaker 7: their others were injured other starting pitchers or ineffective. Now
- 23:46Speaker 7: they've traded for Robbie Ray, traded for Casey Miies, Joe
- 23:49Speaker 7: Musgrove is on his way back, and suddenly they are
- 23:53Speaker 7: hitting again.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Actually not so suddenly.
- 23:55Speaker 7: This has been building, and this run that they're on
- 23:58Speaker 7: it started against Miami, Colorado and San Francisco, three teams
- 24:03Speaker 7: that are not or at least at that time were
- 24:06Speaker 7: struggling or not really in a place where you would
- 24:09Speaker 7: say they're contending.
- 24:10Speaker 4: But then even when.
- 24:12Speaker 7: You thought, okay, the Padres are kind of doing it
- 24:14Speaker 7: against weaker teams, their schedule got tougher and they started
- 24:18Speaker 7: playing tougher teams. Split a series with Arizona two of
- 24:22Speaker 7: three from Houston, and now they just have swept Milwaukee
- 24:25Speaker 7: and here they are Tatis. Remember he had no homers.
- 24:28Speaker 7: He's up to twelve homers. OPS is up to seven
- 24:30Speaker 7: seventy three. Merrill Jackson Merrill since July nineteen has been
- 24:35Speaker 7: on fire. Three seventy six batting average, nine home runs,
- 24:38Speaker 7: eleven hundred OPS, and Manny but Chado, while he's not
- 24:42Speaker 7: really hitting seven to ten OPS, two hundred batting average
- 24:45Speaker 7: in August, still has twenty three homers so they look
- 24:49Speaker 7: like the Padres again, even with all their injuries, and
- 24:53Speaker 7: to me, it's impressive what they've done. And it's just
- 24:56Speaker 7: another example, Alana of a long season. So here we go,
- 25:01Speaker 7: the San Diego Padres. They're back in the playoff mix.
- 25:03Speaker 7: They're holding the second spot in the wildcard race right now.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Good for them.
- 25:08Speaker 8: It's insane to think that Ken, we had written them off.
- 25:10Speaker 8: Some people would have even used as sharpie and said
- 25:12Speaker 8: that the San Diego Padres were done, but it is
- 25:15Speaker 8: not to be. Let's talk about another team, or really
- 25:17Speaker 8: another division that's interesting, and that is the AL East.
- 25:22Speaker 8: Three of the best teams in the league all coming
- 25:24Speaker 8: from that division, and Ken, it doesn't seem like the
- 25:26Speaker 8: Rays have any thought of stopping anytime soon.
- 25:30Speaker 7: No, and they're coming off a nine to zero road trip,
- 25:32Speaker 7: admittedly again against weaker or struggling teams it's Colorado, Seattle
- 25:37Speaker 7: and the A's, but hey, you have to win the
- 25:40Speaker 7: games in front of you, and we just saw Arizona
- 25:42Speaker 7: lose two or three at home to Colorado, so it's
- 25:45Speaker 7: not as easy as you think.
- 25:47Speaker 4: And the Rays, they have done this all season long.
- 25:50Speaker 7: We've talked about this and what's interesting to me is
- 25:54Speaker 7: the effect that Liam Hicks seems to be having in
- 25:56Speaker 7: a very short time since arriving from the Tampa I'm
- 25:59Speaker 7: the Miami Marlins. Remember the Rays were talking about adding
- 26:03Speaker 7: another hitter really could do it at any position.
- 26:06Speaker 4: They wanted a compliment, a fourth compliment to.
- 26:09Speaker 7: Their big three of Junior Caminero, Yondi Diaz and Jonathan Ronda.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Hicks looks like he can be that guy. Now.
- 26:16Speaker 7: I know it's a small sample, but he's eight for
- 26:19Speaker 7: twenty six since the trade. He is a guy with
- 26:21Speaker 7: two home runs, three doubles during that time ops about
- 26:25Speaker 7: eleven hundred and yes, you'll say small sample, can well
- 26:28Speaker 7: guess what a trade acquisition is designed to help you
- 26:33Speaker 7: over a small sample. Obviously, Hicks will be with the
- 26:36Speaker 7: team beyond this season, but this is the boost that
- 26:39Speaker 7: they were looking for. They've got Chandler Simpson hot as well.
- 26:43Speaker 7: They're doing some really good things, and of course they
- 26:45Speaker 7: have the pitching both at the back end of the
- 26:47Speaker 7: bullpen and in the rotation. So the Rays, We've talked
- 26:51Speaker 7: about this endlessly.
- 26:52Speaker 4: They're not going away. They've got a huge lead in
- 26:54Speaker 4: the AL East. They are the best team in the
- 26:56Speaker 4: American League.
- 26:58Speaker 8: Ken the Blue Jays or one of those teams we
- 27:01Speaker 8: talked about in terms of being streaky again, kind of
- 27:03Speaker 8: writing them off as many did with the San Diego Padres.
- 27:06Speaker 8: But hang on because Toronto Ken is saying, not so
- 27:10Speaker 8: fast is their life.
- 27:11Speaker 9: For these Blue Jays, there.
- 27:13Speaker 7: Seems to be alana and it's shocking to see because
- 27:16Speaker 7: this team is another one kind of like the Padres,
- 27:20Speaker 7: below expectations all season long, rotation, battered by injuries, still
- 27:25Speaker 7: having problems in that regard you. Savage is now out,
- 27:28Speaker 7: but they've won ten of their last fourteen. They're a
- 27:31Speaker 7: game and a half back in the wild card race,
- 27:34Speaker 7: and they've gotten a real boost from Brit Bateman, who
- 27:37Speaker 7: came over in the Gossman trade, as well as Charles
- 27:39Speaker 7: McAdoo at the top of their order. Vlad still does
- 27:42Speaker 7: not have a home run at Rogers Center, and there's
- 27:45Speaker 7: still questions in the rotation beyond Cease and now Soriano
- 27:50Speaker 7: along with Schrzer and Bieber, there really is no fifth
- 27:53Speaker 7: and one are injury more and they're going to be
- 27:56Speaker 7: in real trouble again with that rotation.
- 27:58Speaker 4: But they're playing again again.
- 28:00Speaker 7: The way we saw them play not so much in October,
- 28:03Speaker 7: but down the stretch last season in October.
- 28:06Speaker 4: They were on another level. But one and a half
- 28:09Speaker 4: games back in the wild Card. You cannot rule them out.
- 28:11Speaker 7: And it's been interesting to see this team evolve over
- 28:15Speaker 7: the course of the season as well.
- 28:17Speaker 8: I cannot believe Vladimir ger Junior does not have a
- 28:20Speaker 8: home run yet this season at home. I will say
- 28:23Speaker 8: this though, I just love saying Charles McAdoo. I love
- 28:26Speaker 8: this kid's name. What a great baseball name. All right,
- 28:28Speaker 8: as far as the Boston Red Sox are concerned, Ken,
- 28:31Speaker 8: they were going on a meteoric tear going into the
- 28:35Speaker 8: All Star Break. Coming out of the All Star Break,
- 28:37Speaker 8: they looked unbeatable. We never thought they were going to
- 28:39Speaker 8: lose again. But not only did they lose again, Ken,
- 28:42Speaker 8: they've dropped five straight. What's going on with them?
- 28:45Speaker 7: Their offense is stalled a little bit. Wilson Contrari's a
- 28:48Speaker 7: little bit banged up. I'm not terribly worried. And when
- 28:51Speaker 7: you're as hot as they were, there is simply no
- 28:54Speaker 7: way you can sustain that. We all knew this was
- 28:56Speaker 7: coming to some degree. The good news for the Red
- 28:59Speaker 7: Sox is that Roman Anthony seems to be on his
- 29:01Speaker 7: way back. There's a chance Croche could come back. Now
- 29:04Speaker 7: Whitlock is suddenly a concern. He's got an elbow problem.
- 29:08Speaker 7: We'll know more about that as the day.
- 29:09Speaker 4: And perhaps the weekend goes on.
- 29:12Speaker 7: But the Red Sox still are in a commanding position,
- 29:15Speaker 7: four and a half games up in the wildcard race,
- 29:18Speaker 7: holding that lead over the third place team. So they're
- 29:21Speaker 7: in a good spot and I don't expect them to
- 29:24Speaker 7: go all the way backwards.
- 29:26Speaker 4: But at the same time, this was coming.
- 29:29Speaker 8: Yeah, all right, let's go to the National League for
- 29:31Speaker 8: a hot second. Well, actually, I guess two teams, one
- 29:33Speaker 8: in the NL, one in the AL. The Phillies Field
- 29:35Speaker 8: of Dreams game tonight against the Twins, Bryce Harper in
- 29:39Speaker 8: right field. First of all, let's talk about the game itself.
- 29:42Speaker 8: This is something that I absolutely love. It's the one
- 29:45Speaker 8: thing in my career I've not been able to cover
- 29:47Speaker 8: and not being able to attend, and I'm excited about that.
- 29:49Speaker 8: I'd like your take on the Field of Dreams. And
- 29:51Speaker 8: then what the heck is going on in terms of
- 29:54Speaker 8: Bryce Harper and moving him back to the right, you know,
- 29:57Speaker 8: to right field, and everything going on with the Phills.
- 30:00Speaker 7: Well, I did the first two Field of Dreams games
- 30:02Speaker 7: for Fox, and they've been on hiatus with this game
- 30:06Speaker 7: for a couple of years now, and tonight it will
- 30:07Speaker 7: be on Netflix, and I'm interested to see whether it
- 30:11Speaker 7: kind of captures the magic of what it was that
- 30:14Speaker 7: first year when the Yankees played the White Sox that
- 30:17Speaker 7: was amazing. The next year, I believe was Reds and
- 30:20Speaker 7: Cubs not so amazing. The novelty kind of wore off.
- 30:23Speaker 4: But here it is.
- 30:24Speaker 7: Back after a few years away, and we'll see if
- 30:27Speaker 7: it becomes again this big event that MLB wants.
- 30:30Speaker 4: It to be.
- 30:31Speaker 7: Now, the Phillies we talked about this at the deadline
- 30:34Speaker 7: when they got a rise and they started moving in
- 30:36Speaker 7: field pieces all over the place. What was going to
- 30:39Speaker 7: be the impact And one of the possibilities, certainly, was
- 30:43Speaker 7: that Bryce Harper having to run a little bit more
- 30:45Speaker 7: than he would at first base, maybe a lot more
- 30:48Speaker 7: in right field. Who knows what that would mean to him,
- 30:50Speaker 7: And obviously he's having a left knee issue. His quote
- 30:54Speaker 7: was to Charlotte Farnes of the Athletic, I feel like
- 30:57Speaker 7: I'm going to spring training game with my arms, legs.
- 30:59Speaker 7: Every he feels like he's going to be okay. He
- 31:02Speaker 7: wants to play every game. I've noticed a lot of
- 31:05Speaker 7: Phillies fans online saying, what are we doing? Why isn't
- 31:09Speaker 7: Harper at first? Why isn't Bohm on the bench? If
- 31:12Speaker 7: you're going to play Bryce and Scott at third? There
- 31:14Speaker 7: were easier ways to go about this. Now, their outfield
- 31:17Speaker 7: is very thin, and they didn't really acquire an outfielder,
- 31:20Speaker 7: so that was one problem with that idea. But I
- 31:24Speaker 7: can see the point there.
- 31:25Speaker 4: And it's going to be interesting to see at.
- 31:28Speaker 7: Some point if they sacrificed in the outfield, which has
- 31:31Speaker 7: been a problem all season, put Harper back at first,
- 31:34Speaker 7: and say to Bom, listen, you're gonna be a part
- 31:36Speaker 7: time player now. It maybe should have been what they
- 31:38Speaker 7: did in the first place. Then you could have gone
- 31:40Speaker 7: and signed Austin Hayes like the Padres did. I know
- 31:43Speaker 7: the Phillies had.
- 31:43Speaker 4: Him before, but there were ways out here.
- 31:47Speaker 7: This is the path they chose, and it's a perilous path,
- 31:51Speaker 7: there's no question about it.
- 31:52Speaker 4: It's been that way from the very start.
- 31:54Speaker 8: And ken Rice Harper was an outfielder, and then he
- 31:58Speaker 8: became a first baseman, then he was a he was
- 32:00Speaker 8: a first baseman, then he's an outfielder again. Now he's back,
- 32:02Speaker 8: but his body is feeling it. He's feeling the change
- 32:05Speaker 8: in terms of position.
- 32:07Speaker 9: What do you make of that.
- 32:09Speaker 4: Well, they're giving him some DH days and they're going
- 32:12Speaker 4: to continue to do that. But it's not surprising to me.
- 32:16Speaker 4: I remember a lot of asking Mookie Betts.
- 32:18Speaker 7: About playing right field and going to shortstop, and he
- 32:21Speaker 7: was telling me what a relief it was for him.
- 32:23Speaker 4: Physically, and I was like, wooke, what are you talking about.
- 32:26Speaker 7: He goes, hey, man, you try running back and forth
- 32:28Speaker 7: to the outfield nine times a game and then running
- 32:30Speaker 7: around in the outfield.
- 32:32Speaker 4: It does take a toll.
- 32:33Speaker 7: It's might sounds silly to fans because these guys are,
- 32:36Speaker 7: of course, highly trained athletes. But it's more of a toll,
- 32:40Speaker 7: there's no question about that. So it's not surprising that
- 32:44Speaker 7: this is taking more of a toll on Harper, and
- 32:46Speaker 7: they're going to have to find ways around it by
- 32:48Speaker 7: dhing him certain days and also maybe by revising this plan.
- 32:56Speaker 5: Science experiment for the one minute we had to tell
- 32:58Speaker 5: you about why we love Quin's electrolytes, including watermelon salt,
- 33:02Speaker 5: raspberry salt, and I'm holding a citrus salt.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Just opened it.
- 33:05Speaker 5: Going to pour some powder into my water, shake it up,
- 33:08Speaker 5: and AJ, why do you love it?
- 33:09Speaker 1: I love Quints because after a long night out, a
- 33:12Speaker 1: long day at the gym, a long walk in this

- 33:59Speaker 8: On deck is present in by the Fox one app
- 34:01Speaker 8: appreciate the partnership with Fox one. Ken you have brewers
- 34:04Speaker 8: at the Dodgers Saturday on Fox, Jacob Mazerowski versus Justin Robleski.
- 34:10Speaker 9: Potentially a Battle of the All Stars. What are you
- 34:13Speaker 9: looking forward to?
- 34:14Speaker 4: Battle of the All Stars?
- 34:15Speaker 7: Battle of the skis if only aj Prazinski was in
- 34:18Speaker 7: the booth being noted.
- 34:20Speaker 1: But what I'm looking.
- 34:21Speaker 7: Forward to, of course, is seeing the Miz. But Robleski
- 34:24Speaker 7: has been a guy for the Dodgers all year long
- 34:27Speaker 7: who has quietly just been excellent. So the Miz is
- 34:31Speaker 7: going to command all the attention, and rightly so. He's
- 34:34Speaker 7: at two hundred plus strikeouts already. It's incredible what he
- 34:37Speaker 7: is doing, throwing a million miles an hour, all of that,
- 34:40Speaker 7: and we're going to have him on the broadcast. Smoltz
- 34:42Speaker 7: will be in the booth. Smoltz is always a great
- 34:45Speaker 7: win it comes to starting pitchers. I'm interested to hear
- 34:48Speaker 7: his analysis as this game goes on of Jacob Mizerowski,
- 34:51Speaker 7: and interested to see as well how these two teams
- 34:56Speaker 7: fare in this series. The Brewers are coming off getting
- 35:00Speaker 7: swept in San Diego. Now, the Padres are red hot
- 35:02Speaker 7: right now, and the Brewers kind of got in their
- 35:04Speaker 7: way and that was that. And the Brewers are dealing
- 35:07Speaker 7: with some injuries as well on the left side of
- 35:09Speaker 7: their infield, but they've been a remarkable team all year
- 35:13Speaker 7: and their manager Pat Murphy said yesterday, Hey, we've got
- 35:17Speaker 7: the most wins in baseball. There's a reason for that.
- 35:20Speaker 4: And even when you have.
- 35:21Speaker 7: The most wins in baseball, doesn't mean that struggles are impossible.
- 35:26Speaker 7: Doesn't mean that they're not going to happen. And we've
- 35:28Speaker 7: seen this and again it goes back to the long season.
- 35:31Speaker 7: Long season stuff happens. So the Brewers will be looking
- 35:34Speaker 7: to bounce back against the Dodgers. The Dodgers just got
- 35:37Speaker 7: their gift playing three against the Kansas City Royals and
- 35:40Speaker 7: sweeping them.
- 35:41Speaker 4: To end their one and eight slide.
- 35:43Speaker 7: So it's two teams kind of trying to get back
- 35:46Speaker 7: into gear. But remember the calendar says it's only mid August.
- 35:50Speaker 9: Yeah, August twelfth.
- 35:51Speaker 8: Pat Mnfree was saying it, as you mentioned, Ken, you're
- 35:53Speaker 8: still going to go through tough times like this. MLB

- 36:32Speaker 8: making our way right in to Grill and Ken your opportunity,
- 36:35Speaker 8: of course, to ask Ken Rosenthal some questions. Let's talk
- 36:39Speaker 8: about the Cubs and the Cardinals, and then of course
- 36:43Speaker 8: White Sox, Mariners and d Backs up next. But let's
- 36:45Speaker 8: talk the first question Ken, in terms of Mike g
- 36:49Speaker 8: fifteen has just got here.
- 36:52Speaker 9: L Oh, yeah, what did I miss? Are we talking
- 36:54Speaker 9: about how the Cubs are on an absolute wagon?
- 36:57Speaker 8: Mike wants to know, Ken, what do you make of
- 36:59Speaker 8: these Cubs and Alexgmen.
- 37:00Speaker 9: In his three home runs?
- 37:01Speaker 7: Mike, glad you asked, because we haven't talked about the
- 37:04Speaker 7: Cubs and we should be talking about the Cubs.
- 37:06Speaker 4: Guess what?
- 37:07Speaker 7: They are only three games behind the Brewers right now.
- 37:09Speaker 7: They won I believe eight of nine. Their offense again
- 37:13Speaker 7: is on fire.
- 37:14Speaker 4: And I remember it.
- 37:15Speaker 7: Was about a week ago, either on foul territory or
- 37:18Speaker 7: fair territory, I was asked, can the Cubs catch the Brewers?
- 37:21Speaker 7: And I said, Nah, probably not leave the deficit was
- 37:25Speaker 7: six or six and a half at that time, and
- 37:27Speaker 7: you just do the math.
- 37:28Speaker 4: It's not that easy to do.
- 37:29Speaker 7: But they have games left with each other, and these
- 37:32Speaker 7: are teams that are going to be battling, perhaps to
- 37:35Speaker 7: the end. But we'll see if the Cubs can sustain this,
- 37:39Speaker 7: because remember, they've had their highs this year and they've
- 37:42Speaker 7: been extreme, and they've also had some extreme lows. So
- 37:45Speaker 7: I don't rule anything out in this division race. And
- 37:48Speaker 7: the Brewers they've got some things going on, as I said,
- 37:52Speaker 7: with injuries right now, they're a little bit dicey for them.
- 37:55Speaker 7: But I loved what the Cubs did at the deadline,
- 37:57Speaker 7: and maybe that is the impetus they needed to catch
- 38:00Speaker 7: Milwaukee in at NL.
- 38:01Speaker 8: Central Ken we haven't talked much about the Brewer or
- 38:04Speaker 8: excuse me, of the Mariners.
- 38:05Speaker 9: We've talked a lot about the Brewers, but of the Mariners.
- 38:07Speaker 8: Lance Johnson fifty oh four would like to ask you
- 38:10Speaker 8: Seattle fire Scott Service because of their lack of hitting,
- 38:13Speaker 8: will they do the same to Dan Wilson? How much
- 38:15Speaker 8: of a leash does he have?
- 38:17Speaker 7: I don't know, and I will say to Lance Johnson
- 38:20Speaker 7: five to four, that question has crossed my mind.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Now.
- 38:24Speaker 4: It's late in the season for a managerial change.
- 38:26Speaker 7: But they fired their third hitting coach a couple of
- 38:30Speaker 7: weeks ago, Bobby Magayanis. That didn't do the trick, and
- 38:33Speaker 7: it was kind of a silly move anyway, you're firing
- 38:35Speaker 7: your third hitting coach, your assistant to the assistant. You
- 38:39Speaker 7: got Edgar Martinez up top. You got Kevin Sitzer right
- 38:42Speaker 7: after that, and Bobby Magianis.
- 38:43Speaker 4: Was after him. That didn't do it. But this team
- 38:49Speaker 4: does look like it needs a kick in the rear. Now.
- 38:52Speaker 7: I don't know that fire and the manager would do it,
- 38:54Speaker 7: but it's a really interesting question right now where the
- 38:57Speaker 7: Mariners are going with this and what happens to Dan Wilson.
- 38:59Speaker 4: Maybe not right away, but at the end of the
- 39:01Speaker 4: season if.
- 39:02Speaker 7: They do not pick it up, and we've been waiting
- 39:05Speaker 7: for them to get hot all.
- 39:06Speaker 8: Year long, cal Rawley not hitting perhaps a reason for
- 39:10Speaker 8: that too. Ken Marvislten wants to ask you, Ken, do
- 39:14Speaker 8: you think there will be more off season activity like
- 39:17Speaker 8: trades and signings before or after the CBA gets settled.
- 39:21Speaker 7: If settled I would say both, and the real question
- 39:25Speaker 7: will be November. And we know that the CBA expires
- 39:29Speaker 7: December first, and we know in twenty twenty two, the
- 39:32Speaker 7: last time the sport was in this situation, there was
- 39:35Speaker 7: a flurry of activity right before the lockout started on
- 39:39Speaker 7: December first. The guy I've been thinking about here is Schooble,
- 39:44Speaker 7: because if you're Schooble, it probably want to sign before
- 39:48Speaker 7: we have any kind of new system in place.
- 39:51Speaker 4: Now.
- 39:51Speaker 7: The new system is not going to take effect immediately
- 39:54Speaker 7: if indeed it's a cap system, and even if it's not,
- 39:57Speaker 7: we might have some grandfathering in. I would think if
- 39:59Speaker 7: they kept the current luxury tax plan in place then
- 40:03Speaker 7: it wouldn't be like that.
- 40:04Speaker 4: But either way, it.
- 40:05Speaker 7: Might behoove Scooble to act sooner rather than later. And
- 40:09Speaker 7: his agent, Scott Bores, is not one who always moves quickly,
- 40:14Speaker 7: but in certain periods does so that's the one to watch.
- 40:18Speaker 7: I would say there has a chance a good chance
- 40:21Speaker 7: of happening, perhaps before December first.
- 40:23Speaker 8: Yeah, I would like if I'm Schooble, to lock down
- 40:26Speaker 8: that big contract as soon as possible, certainly before a lockout.
- 40:29Speaker 8: Along the same lines of a lockout, Ken armand our
- 40:32Speaker 8: friend is amazing wants to know, with the recent sale
- 40:34Speaker 8: of the Lakers obviously twelve billion dollars, which is bananas
- 40:39Speaker 8: and MLB owners seeing that price and drooling over it,
- 40:42Speaker 8: what percentage would you put the entire twenty twenty seven
- 40:45Speaker 8: season as locked out? And is there a correlation in
- 40:48Speaker 8: your mind?
- 40:51Speaker 7: Certainly MLB owners have looked at the NBA and NFL
- 40:54Speaker 7: valuations of the franchises and been jealous.
- 40:58Speaker 4: For lack of a credit's round and envious of that situation.
- 41:02Speaker 7: Now, the Yankees just were valued at ten over ten billion,
- 41:05Speaker 7: So I don't know that it's as dire as circumstance
- 41:08Speaker 7: as you would think. But certainly MLB owners are quite
- 41:12Speaker 7: worried about their franchise valuations.
- 41:14Speaker 4: That's why they want a salary cap.
- 41:16Speaker 7: That's the number one reason they can talk about competitive
- 41:18Speaker 7: balance all they want. Now, do I think the twenty
- 41:22Speaker 7: twenty seven season will be entirely missed?
- 41:25Speaker 4: I do not think that.
- 41:26Speaker 7: I think that would be the height repeat the height
- 41:29Speaker 7: of stupidity at a time when the sport is experiencing
- 41:33Speaker 7: a renaissance. Are the owners capable of that kind of
- 41:38Speaker 7: conduct when they're intent on getting a salary cap Absolutely,
- 41:43Speaker 7: they are capable of it, but at some point, cooler
- 41:46Speaker 7: heads must prevail, and there are a lot of implications
- 41:49Speaker 7: from television contracts to fan discontent to all kinds of
- 41:54Speaker 7: things that would happen if you miss an entire season.
- 41:58Speaker 7: Sport would come back, but it would take some time,
- 42:00Speaker 7: and your franchise valuations might suffer a little bit in
- 42:03Speaker 7: the process.
- 42:04Speaker 8: I absolutely love that the height of stupidity. You my
- 42:07Speaker 8: friends are absolutely right. All right, we crowned dude and
- 42:10Speaker 8: dork of the Week next.

- 43:14Speaker 9: I'm the dude, so that's what you call me, all right, Ken?
- 43:21Speaker 9: I know somebody in the chat who already.
- 43:23Speaker 8: Is going to agree with your pick of dude of
- 43:26Speaker 8: the week, Christian A three. Why don't you tell everybody, Ken,
- 43:30Speaker 8: who you're due to the week?
- 43:31Speaker 1: Is?
- 43:32Speaker 4: It is Alex Bregman of the Chicago Cubs three homer
- 43:35Speaker 4: game last night. His OPS is up to seven fifty eight,
- 43:38Speaker 4: and we've been talking about it the entire show. It's
- 43:41Speaker 4: a long.
- 43:42Speaker 7: Season and it's started off for Alex Bregman not so great.
- 43:46Speaker 7: You often see this when a free agent signs a
- 43:48Speaker 7: big contract with a new team. It is not always
- 43:52Speaker 7: easy for that player to get going right away. It's
- 43:54Speaker 7: a big transition. We see it time and time again.
- 43:57Speaker 7: Gregman is a guy who is as serious about it
- 44:00Speaker 7: craft as any player in the major leagues. He can
- 44:03Speaker 7: overthink it at times, perhaps, and I'm sure he was
- 44:06Speaker 7: in his head a little bit while he was struggling
- 44:08Speaker 7: in the first half, but he is back. The three
- 44:10Speaker 7: homer game proved it, and he again is the dude
- 44:13Speaker 7: of the week for me.
- 44:14Speaker 9: Alex Bregman very studied.
- 44:17Speaker 8: He is a guy that absolutely pays attentions, always trying
- 44:20Speaker 8: to get better, always studies. Obviously, congrats on getting more
- 44:23Speaker 8: than ten years of service time for Alex Bragman this season.
- 44:27Speaker 9: My dude of the week is a couple of pitchers.
- 44:28Speaker 8: I'm going to start with Dean Kramer throwing seven innings
- 44:32Speaker 8: of one run, one hit ball against your longtime team
- 44:36Speaker 8: Ken nine days after they traded you away. That had
- 44:39Speaker 8: to feel pretty darn good for him. And I'm also
- 44:41Speaker 8: going to give an honorable mention. I know you're going
- 44:43Speaker 8: to roll your eyes to Blake Snell just because he
- 44:46Speaker 8: came off the il hasn't pitched since May ninth.
- 44:48Speaker 9: He's always a second half pitcher. He wants to take
- 44:50Speaker 9: half the season off. Good for him.
- 44:52Speaker 8: Six innings, three hits, one earned run, one walk. But
- 44:55Speaker 8: the ten punchies can. That's why Blake Snell gets an
- 44:58Speaker 8: honorable mention for me. All right time now for the
- 45:02Speaker 8: dork of the Week. Ken, you and I are in
- 45:11Speaker 8: agreement upon this, and I will let you go first,
- 45:15Speaker 8: because this was absolutely bananas, the four.
- 45:19Speaker 7: Out fiasco in Toronto involving the Red Sox and the
- 45:22Speaker 7: Blue Jays. Now, initially my thought was the Red Sox players,
- 45:27Speaker 7: the two guys on base who forgot the number of
- 45:29Speaker 7: outs there were or didn't know the number of outs
- 45:32Speaker 7: there were, Well, that's on them, but the scoreboard showed
- 45:35Speaker 7: two outs. They were kind of obviously not totally aware,
- 45:40Speaker 7: but it was a confusing situation for them.
- 45:42Speaker 4: But they're not the dorks of the week for that alone.
- 45:45Speaker 7: There was so much going on, There was so much
- 45:48Speaker 7: Dorktom and John Boy in his latest video it's fifteen
- 45:52Speaker 7: minutes long, he detailed it all and he shows he
- 45:55Speaker 7: shows in that video that the Blue Jays could have
- 45:59Speaker 7: avoided this whole matter by throwing to third base instead
- 46:02Speaker 7: of first base for the fourth out of the inning
- 46:06Speaker 7: or end, as well the umpire by signaling and waving
- 46:10Speaker 7: the run off. Initially, that caused confusion, so everybody on
- 46:14Speaker 7: the field seemed to be confused.
- 46:16Speaker 4: Now, in fairness to everyone involved, I don't know how
- 46:19Speaker 4: many of us knew this rule.
- 46:21Speaker 7: I certainly didn't, and a lot of people fans, people
- 46:24Speaker 7: in the game didn't really know it that well either,
- 46:27Speaker 7: or the entire sequence that involved these rules. So I'll
- 46:32Speaker 7: give it a little bit of a break to everyone involved.
- 46:36Speaker 7: But you can't just blame the Red Sox, you can't
- 46:38Speaker 7: just blame the Blue Jays, you can't just blame the obs.
- 46:40Speaker 4: Everybody had a role in this fiasco.
- 46:43Speaker 9: Ken, I'm in agreement with you.
- 46:44Speaker 8: They also are my dorks of the week, a lot
- 46:47Speaker 8: of dorkdom, as you put it. I was sitting there
- 46:49Speaker 8: watching this unfold in real time, and I was watching
- 46:52Speaker 8: it with Chris, and he was like, wait a minute,
- 46:54Speaker 8: shouldn't the players know how many outs are going in
- 46:57Speaker 8: the inning right now?
- 46:58Speaker 9: Because he was he also.
- 47:00Speaker 8: Said, you're always told the scoreboard isn't right, like, don't
- 47:03Speaker 8: pay attention to the scoreboard, Like you always have to
- 47:06Speaker 8: be mentally in the game, because that type of stuff happens, right,
- 47:09Speaker 8: whether it was an individual that accidentally put two outs
- 47:12Speaker 8: up on the scoreboard, or whether it was an automatic
- 47:15Speaker 8: system or however, it went down. You can't always rely
- 47:18Speaker 8: on the scoreboard, right, so it would behoove you to
- 47:21Speaker 8: make sure you know what's happening in terms of being
- 47:24Speaker 8: in the game. I think the only person in real
- 47:26Speaker 8: time that kind of was spot on with the rule
- 47:29Speaker 8: was Lumer Lone of the Nessen broadcast. He seemed to
- 47:32Speaker 8: be able to break it down before the seventeen other
- 47:35Speaker 8: explanations of what was happening. I certainly didn't know what
- 47:38Speaker 8: was going on, but you would think that the players
- 47:41Speaker 8: on the field would have a better sense of how
- 47:43Speaker 8: many outs were in the game. But Ken, before we
- 47:46Speaker 8: let you go, it is official. Garrett Whitlock is on
- 47:49Speaker 8: the IL for Boston with that elbow inflammation, and they
- 47:53Speaker 8: have recalled Greg Weissert from Triple A. So how concerned
- 47:58Speaker 8: should they be in terms of Whitlock's arm issue.
- 48:03Speaker 4: Anytime it's an elbow, you have to be concerned. It's
- 48:05Speaker 4: as simple as that. And I don't know what this
- 48:08Speaker 4: means for him.
- 48:08Speaker 7: Maybe it's a short term thing, but again, elbows are
- 48:12Speaker 7: a problem, all right.
- 48:14Speaker 9: Ken, Great to be with you as always. That is
- 48:16Speaker 9: it for us.
