Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / Football at Four: Further Discussion on Issues From Eagles Loss to Rams
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher from the Inside the Birds podcast, and of
- 0:03Speaker 1: course Philly Voice is with us as he joins us
- 0:06Speaker 1: now on the Sports Pass Live on 97.3 ESPN. Let's
- 0:09Speaker 1: get the takeaways. As Jeff writes over at Philly Voice,
- 0:13Speaker 1: the Eagles blew it on fourth and goal, but not
- 0:16Speaker 1: because they went for it. We've been talking a lot
- 0:18Speaker 1: about that play and everything else, Jeff. I want to
- 0:21Speaker 1: get your takeaways. Do you think that that decision ultimately
- 0:25Speaker 1: cost the Eagles the game? No, not at all.
- 0:28Speaker 2: And I think that it was validated by the fact
- 0:30Speaker 2: that the Rams went and scored 14 points, right? So
- 0:33Speaker 2: what's the difference? Lose by one or lose by four?
- 0:35Speaker 2: I thought if you get that, you absolutely win the game.
- 0:38Speaker 2: You put it away. If you don't get it, you
- 0:41Speaker 2: have to make the Rams go 98 yards instead of
- 0:43Speaker 2: kicking a field goal and then making the Rams go, what,
- 0:46Speaker 2: 65 yards. And the Rams did go 98 yards. And
- 0:48Speaker 2: then they did it again.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Well, not 98.
- 0:50Speaker 2: They went down the field again on the next drive.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I've listened to some people who... The only argument that
- 0:57Speaker 2: I've heard that I can somewhat try to rationalize on
- 1:00Speaker 2: their side is that some people might think that the
- 1:04Speaker 2: Rams would attack offensively differently if they were down by
- 1:09Speaker 2: 13 instead. Because what was it, 20-10? Yeah, you kick
- 1:15Speaker 2: the field goal, you're up 23-10 instead of 10. I
- 1:20Speaker 2: don't know why that three points. That's what I said.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I don't understand it, but that's what.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Well, Jeff, I mean, I agree with you because they
- 1:28Speaker 1: went down the field like a hot knife through butter.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I mean, how much slower could they have gone? Like,
- 1:32Speaker 1: what differently? They went down and scored as fast as
- 1:34Speaker 1: humanly possible. There was no pushback. They went right down
- 1:38Speaker 1: the field and scored. And, you know, this is where
- 1:39Speaker 1: I talk about I agree with you. I don't mind.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I like to go for the points there because I'm shorthanded.
- 1:45Speaker 1: But then on the flip side, you can say, because
- 1:46Speaker 1: I'm shorthanded, I need to go up three scores. Right.
- 1:49Speaker 2: You're only two yards away. And, you know, you can't
- 1:53Speaker 2: anticipate that you're– Your left guard is going to run
- 1:56Speaker 2: into your quarterback on the third down play. That probably
- 1:58Speaker 2: would have been a touchdown because they were moving the ball.
- 2:00Speaker 2: That's another thing, Mike. They didn't get to the two
- 2:03Speaker 2: because of an interception return that got them there, right?
- 2:06Speaker 2: They actually were showing signs of moving the ball against
- 2:09Speaker 2: the Rams.
- 2:09Speaker 1: That drive, Jeff. They ran the ball right down the
- 2:13Speaker 1: Rams' throat. They went right down the field and ran
- 2:16Speaker 1: the ball with a ton of success. Yes.
- 2:18Speaker 2: So, I mean... I'm a big person on I judge process,
- 2:23Speaker 2: not results, because coaches always taught me that. Players always
- 2:25Speaker 2: teach you that. And the process to me was very sound.
- 2:29Speaker 2: The results were not. It happens.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I would look at, and again, I harped on this
- 2:34Speaker 1: in the playoff game and even in the Washington game
- 2:37Speaker 1: that they end up winning, the defense has a lead
- 2:41Speaker 1: at home in the fourth quarter of two scorers and
- 2:44Speaker 1: they can't finish the game out. I look at that
- 2:47Speaker 1: as a concern as, hey, my offense doesn't get it
- 2:50Speaker 1: on the two-yard line, but I'm giving you the chance
- 2:52Speaker 1: to make them go 98 yards, and you couldn't get
- 2:55Speaker 1: the job done. To me, that's where the game is lost.
- 2:59Speaker 2: For sure. And, like, we can sit here and beat
- 3:01Speaker 2: up the defense, but, like, you know, no Grenard, no
- 3:04Speaker 2: Quinion Mitchell, no Zach Vaughn. It wasn't really the Eagles defense.
- 3:07Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not trying to make excuses. Woolen got
- 3:10Speaker 2: beat a couple of times. The Rams have been able
- 3:12Speaker 2: to beat him throughout his career. They got fortunate earlier
- 3:16Speaker 2: in the game that Stafford just overshot a little bit
- 3:20Speaker 2: of what would have been an immediate touchdown right on
- 3:22Speaker 2: Jonathan Jones as soon as Mitchell got hurt. The whole
- 3:25Speaker 2: second half, I felt like the dam was going to break.
- 3:30Speaker 2: for the Rams offense against the Eagles defense because the
- 3:33Speaker 2: defense was lacking some really essential guys, right? And it did.
- 3:37Speaker 2: It broke at the worst time, and it happened, and
- 3:40Speaker 2: everybody's got to own it. I agree with that. Like
- 3:43Speaker 2: when Nick Sirianni says that, it didn't have to happen,
- 3:46Speaker 2: but the Rams are really good, too. It's not like
- 3:48Speaker 2: they did this against, you know, the worst offense in
- 3:51Speaker 2: the league or anything like that.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. You know, the defense has been frustrating
- 3:56Speaker 1: because you're right. They do have talent, and then, you know,
- 3:58Speaker 1: Grenard goes out. I thought Grenard– cause that first interception
- 4:02Speaker 1: this is where we talk about you don't have to
- 4:03Speaker 1: get a sack but if you get pressure that causes
- 4:07Speaker 1: a errant throw I thought Stafford put too much air
- 4:10Speaker 1: under that ball because Grenard leveled that running back almost
- 4:13Speaker 1: right into him and it causes him to make a
- 4:15Speaker 1: bad throw you get an interception and then he goes
- 4:18Speaker 1: out and then of course Mitchell goes out and then
- 4:20Speaker 1: they're picking on Jonathan Jones all game you know Trotter
- 4:23Speaker 1: I think is at least around the ball and makes tackles,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and he doesn't kill you out there, but he's not
- 4:29Speaker 1: Zach Vaughn, for God's sakes. So that is frustrating. And conversely,
- 4:34Speaker 1: you're down three guys on the offensive side of the ball,
- 4:36Speaker 1: and you're wondering where do they go in these situations.
- 4:41Speaker 1: It doesn't matter if Saquon's there, if Goddard's there, and
- 4:44Speaker 1: if Smith's there, if the line plays the way they
- 4:46Speaker 1: did on Sunday, though.
- 4:47Speaker 2: So it's a great point. We just finished up. taping
- 4:51Speaker 2: with Greg Cosell, our show inside the tape that we
- 4:53Speaker 2: do every week. We do offense and defense where he
- 4:55Speaker 2: breaks down the tape. And I admit it to Greg,
- 4:57Speaker 2: you know, being at the game in real time and
- 5:00Speaker 2: watching it and seeing how the Rams try to funnel
- 5:03Speaker 2: a lot of their overloaded blitzes toward Markel Bell's side
- 5:06Speaker 2: and Shipley struggled in past protection at times. I really
- 5:09Speaker 2: came out when the game was over. I'm like, man,
- 5:11Speaker 2: they really exposed the fact that Bell was starting in
- 5:14Speaker 2: place of Johnson. But then when you go through it
- 5:16Speaker 2: and I create the clips of the show and I
- 5:17Speaker 2: watch the tape and I think to myself, nope, It
- 5:20Speaker 2: wasn't Markel Bell that was the problem. It was the
- 5:24Speaker 2: left guard, Cam Juergens.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I don't know if you know this guy on Twitter.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I don't know what he does, but this guy, I
- 5:33Speaker 1: can't think of his name right now. I don't know
- 5:34Speaker 1: what he does, but he has 16 plays of Juergens
- 5:40Speaker 1: just getting his ass kicked.
- 5:41Speaker 2: 16 plays! Just from yesterday or since he took over
- 5:46Speaker 2: left guard?
- 5:47Speaker 1: Just in the game yesterday. What the hell is the
- 5:49Speaker 1: guy's name? Thomas Peterson. Thomas J. Peterson is the guy's name.
- 5:54Speaker 1: He does a really good job on, okay, I don't
- 5:56Speaker 1: know what he does for his job or what he does,
- 5:59Speaker 1: but he has 16 plays cut up of Juergens.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I can tell you I didn't find 16, but if
- 6:05Speaker 2: it's six, it's still too many.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Okay, he is 16, and then today, Sirianni says, I'm
- 6:10Speaker 1: pleased with where Cam is. He's doing good things. What?
- 6:14Speaker 1: I mean, I get it. He's not going to throw
- 6:16Speaker 1: the guy under the bus there. But the point being,
- 6:19Speaker 1: they have to seriously consider finding another option there, right?
- 6:24Speaker 2: Well, I mean, yeah, you would think, but what's the
- 6:27Speaker 2: other option? Is it Willie Lampkin? I mean, they don't
- 6:30Speaker 2: have a ton of great options to just stick in
- 6:33Speaker 2: there and say, this guy will do a way better job.
- 6:35Speaker 1: And then, frankly.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Then you open up the discussion, was Juergens playing well
- 6:40Speaker 2: even when he was at center?
- 6:43Speaker 1: No.
- 6:44Speaker 2: He was not.
- 6:45Speaker 1: No, and the one guy I think that's playing pretty
- 6:48Speaker 1: consistently well is Kendall.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Yeah, he'll still have an occasional interior pressure, and obviously
- 6:54Speaker 2: when you're facing the Rams and they blitz so much, Mike,
- 6:56Speaker 2: that they just took advantage of a unit right now
- 6:59Speaker 2: up front for the Eagles that's very disjointed and discombobulated.
- 7:02Speaker 2: So there's going to be warts from everybody, right? But
- 7:06Speaker 2: in general, I think when they, yes, I think general
- 7:09Speaker 2: Kendall has played well. They're still not running the ball well.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I don't think that's on any one person. I think
- 7:15Speaker 2: that they are falling into a trap of, hey, when
- 7:19Speaker 2: you're under center, they're running. When you're not, you're in shotgun,
- 7:22Speaker 2: you're passing. They're a little on the predictable side, if
- 7:25Speaker 2: I'm being kind, maybe. And so this whole run game,
- 7:30Speaker 2: you got to have your run game so that you
- 7:31Speaker 2: can be in better down and distance for passing so
- 7:35Speaker 2: teams aren't just completely teeing off against you. So I
- 7:38Speaker 2: understand what Nick says when it's not just Cam Juergens,
- 7:40Speaker 2: but he is part of the reason that you're getting
- 7:43Speaker 2: behind the sticks and getting into those bad down and distances.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I can't– listen, I can't disagree with you there. I mean,
- 7:50Speaker 1: he is getting absolutely destroyed. He's whiffing on guys. And
- 7:54Speaker 1: a lot of it looks like, Jeff– It is him
- 7:58Speaker 1: just having a lack of understanding of who I'm supposed
- 8:01Speaker 1: to block because he just doesn't play the position. So
- 8:03Speaker 1: he's going one way, but then he's like, crap, I'm
- 8:06Speaker 1: supposed to block this guy, and that guy's running free.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Or I was supposed to block this guy and get
- 8:11Speaker 1: a hand on him, but I went the wrong way.
- 8:14Speaker 1: It just looks like a guy who's thinking too much
- 8:17Speaker 1: and doesn't know where he's supposed to be.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you're half right to me in that. There were
- 8:21Speaker 2: certainly some plays, and even the way you just described one,
- 8:24Speaker 2: you're talking about a stunt where he– is basically double
- 8:26Speaker 2: teaming with Kendall on somebody and then let the stunter
- 8:30Speaker 2: go right throughout the middle. Like he'd never even turned to, to,
- 8:33Speaker 2: to block him. he should know. I mean, when you're
- 8:35Speaker 2: a center, you should know all of the protections for
- 8:39Speaker 2: interior pass rushes and stunts and twists, because that's like
- 8:43Speaker 2: the crux of your job. It doesn't change when you
- 8:46Speaker 2: move to left guard. Like you don't, you're yes, you're
- 8:49Speaker 2: playing a different position, but your understanding of what the
- 8:52Speaker 2: offense is trying to do to you. I'm sorry. Defense
- 8:54Speaker 2: trying to do to you shouldn't change. And that's what
- 8:56Speaker 2: was shocking to me is that he almost looked like
- 8:59Speaker 2: a guy who didn't have center experience or knowledge of,
- 9:03Speaker 2: how to defend a basic stunt.
- 9:05Speaker 1: With that, 0 for 12 on third down. They had
- 9:08Speaker 1: a lot of problems in the second half. Their second
- 9:11Speaker 1: half offense was atrocious. They averaged 3.4 yards per pass attempt.
- 9:18Speaker 1: He was 2 of 9 for 10 yards in the
- 9:21Speaker 1: second half, Jalen Hurts. Three yards per play, fewest in
- 9:25Speaker 1: any game under Nick Sirianni. 0 for 12 on third down.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Do we look at Jalen Hurts and say, not good enough, man,
- 9:32Speaker 1: or is this, hey, man, he just didn't have anything
- 9:34Speaker 1: out there for him? Which way do we– because there's
- 9:37Speaker 1: a lot of guys who are on the, hey, this
- 9:39Speaker 1: is Hurts, it's his fault. And there's the other side
- 9:42Speaker 1: who are looking at it and saying, there wasn't a
- 9:44Speaker 1: lot of plays to be made. So what's the right
- 9:46Speaker 1: answer here, Jeff Mosher?
- 9:47Speaker 2: I mean, I'm far more toward the he was not
- 9:52Speaker 2: in a good enough offensive environment to succeed category then
- 9:56Speaker 2: it's his fault they didn't succeed. I found two plays
- 10:00Speaker 2: that I thought he could have done a better job on. Unfortunately,
- 10:04Speaker 2: one of them was the fourth and goal at the two.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Three-step drop, speed out to Wicks, and he just doesn't
- 10:11Speaker 2: throw it. And you saw him kind of like get
- 10:14Speaker 2: stuck in the pocket and then try to shuffle the
- 10:15Speaker 2: ball out to Darius Cooper. Like three-step drop. You got
- 10:20Speaker 2: to plant and throw. He's looking at Wicks and he doesn't.
- 10:23Speaker 2: The coverage is tight by McDuffie, but if you throw
- 10:26Speaker 2: it with anticipation, you either hit him for the touchdown
- 10:30Speaker 2: or at least you give nobody else a chance to
- 10:32Speaker 2: make a play on the ball. But that, I mean,
- 10:35Speaker 2: two plays out of an entire game that I can
- 10:37Speaker 2: say I didn't think Hurts did a great job on,
- 10:39Speaker 2: that to me is a signal that it was way
- 10:42Speaker 2: more than Jalen Hurts.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Being the issue. Yeah, Moche, we've got people texting and
- 10:47Speaker 1: tweeting in, Jalen Hurts isn't a good quarterback. The guy
- 10:49Speaker 1: consistently needs a number one offensive line, a number one
- 10:52Speaker 1: wide receiver, a number one running back, and a number
- 10:55Speaker 1: one defense to be any good. When he has middle-of-the-road
- 10:57Speaker 1: supporting cast, he becomes a middle-of-the-road quarterback. Mahomes, Allen, et cetera,
- 11:01Speaker 1: they overcome those things. Is that a fair assessment from Mengel08?
- 11:07Speaker 2: I would ask Mengel how he thought Patrick Mahomes looked
- 11:10Speaker 2: last year before the knee injury when he had a
- 11:12Speaker 2: banged-up offensive line, no running game, and no receivers. It
- 11:17Speaker 2: didn't look pretty for the Chiefs passing offense last year, right?
- 11:19Speaker 2: And I'm not– this is not to play apples to
- 11:22Speaker 2: apples with Hurts and Mahomes, but, I mean, I think
- 11:24Speaker 2: if you took a lot of quarterbacks and their best– and,
- 11:28Speaker 2: by the way, losing your right tackle an hour or
- 11:30Speaker 2: two before the game, a future Hall of Fame one,
- 11:33Speaker 2: is a little bit different than having an entire week
- 11:36Speaker 2: to prepare. So I think that's just a little, it's
- 11:39Speaker 2: very unfair on Jalen.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Here's another post. The passing offense is the bottom of
- 11:44Speaker 1: the league for three straight years. It's without question the
- 11:47Speaker 1: quarterback who's responsible. He's not the 2022 guy anymore. He's
- 11:51Speaker 1: Russell Wilson and Cam Newton when they couldn't run. How
- 11:55Speaker 1: much do we look at the passing offense? Because that
- 11:58Speaker 1: guy is right. I watched a lot of games around
- 12:01Speaker 1: the league. I'm not talking about Miami. I'm talking about Tennessee.
- 12:04Speaker 1: I'm talking about the worst teams in the league. They
- 12:07Speaker 1: actually have some fluidity in their offense. They can move
- 12:10Speaker 1: the ball between the 20s. They just can't score is
- 12:13Speaker 1: their problem. Inside the red zone, they stink. The Eagles
- 12:17Speaker 1: never have fluidity. They never have a guy open. They
- 12:20Speaker 1: never seem to have a guy just wide open who
- 12:22Speaker 1: catches the ball and then gets yards after the catch
- 12:26Speaker 1: it's always so no.
- 12:28Speaker 2: See i i see that's see this this guy is
- 12:31Speaker 2: bringing up an unfair conversation because if he wants to
- 12:35Speaker 2: say that about the last two years and talk about
- 12:38Speaker 2: hertz's accountability for it i i will say yes that
- 12:41Speaker 2: he does bear a big part of that and we've
- 12:44Speaker 2: you know gone through the tape and show but i
- 12:46Speaker 2: thought for the first two weeks of this season at
- 12:48Speaker 2: least before all the injuries really started to come in.
- 12:51Speaker 2: He was leading. I mean, remember the two Dontavia and
- 12:54Speaker 2: Wicks catches in week ones?
- 12:55Speaker 1: Those were.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Excellent throws by Jalen Hurts that gave a receiver a
- 12:59Speaker 2: chance to make yards after the catch. And against Tennessee,
- 13:03Speaker 2: the last drive where he's hitting Devontae Smith left, Devontae
- 13:07Speaker 2: Smith right, Devontae Smith here and there. I mean, those
- 13:09Speaker 2: were really nice layered throws. Of course, Devontae Smith is
- 13:13Speaker 2: toe-tapping on a few of them and doing well as well.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I'm not saying it's all Jalen, but I thought you
- 13:18Speaker 2: were seeing some significant progress from Jalen Hurts for the
- 13:21Speaker 2: first two weeks.
- 13:22Speaker 1: And then.
- 13:23Speaker 2: came the Chicago game, and then came the second half,
- 13:28Speaker 2: the blown-up screens. They had some adversity. Oh, well, you
- 13:33Speaker 2: had the injury to Dickerson, right, that has thrown their
- 13:36Speaker 2: offensive line in flux. So let's see how this thing
- 13:40Speaker 2: goes for the next few weeks.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Does this look like a different offense to you, or
- 13:44Speaker 1: does it resemble? No.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Sorry to cut you off, but I'll tell you what
- 13:48Speaker 2: it looks like. I made this joke to somebody yesterday
- 13:51Speaker 2: when I was leaving the stadium. This is the old
- 13:53Speaker 2: offense and new offenses close, right? Yeah, you're going under center.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Big deal. And running wide zone.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Great.
- 13:59Speaker 2: If you go under center and run wide zone every
- 14:02Speaker 2: time you're under center, then you're being too predictable. And
- 14:05Speaker 2: then what happens when you don't? Then you're in shotgun
- 14:08Speaker 2: and you're running your shotgun based plays. So, yeah, you're
- 14:12Speaker 2: seeing condensed formations. Yeah, you're seeing wide zone. Yeah, you're
- 14:15Speaker 2: seeing this and that. Where's the under center play action?
- 14:18Speaker 2: You know, like, where is the element of this offense?
- 14:21Speaker 2: I feel like they're trying to build their foundation first
- 14:24Speaker 2: because the foundation is getting that run game going. But
- 14:26Speaker 2: how do you build it when you have cracks in
- 14:29Speaker 2: your foundation of your run game?
- 14:30Speaker 1: You can't block. I think the blocking is, you know,
- 14:34Speaker 1: and we have a poll question up at Mike Gill's show.
- 14:36Speaker 1: People can vote over there. You know, the Seagulls offense
- 14:39Speaker 1: stinks because... And you can see some of the results
- 14:43Speaker 1: right now. Jalen Hurts, offensive line isn't good. Sean Mannion,
- 14:48Speaker 1: Nick Sirianni. I am kind of happy to say that
- 14:52Speaker 1: the offensive line is a runaway winner right now at 55%.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Hurts is at 18%. Sirianni is at 21%. My question
- 15:01Speaker 1: with Sirianni, the offensive sticks because Sirianni is, he doesn't
- 15:04Speaker 1: even call the plays. He really has nothing to do
- 15:06Speaker 1: with the offense. But I feel like people just... Put
- 15:12Speaker 1: him in there. Just put him in there, right?
- 15:14Speaker 2: All right. I think you can just look at it
- 15:17Speaker 2: from a big-picture standpoint. This is the life that Nick
- 15:19Speaker 2: Ceriani chose when he hired Sean Mannion, who then hired
- 15:23Speaker 2: Chris Cooper, and it led to Jeff Stoutland not being
- 15:26Speaker 2: on the team. And that's fine. Everybody would love that
- 15:28Speaker 2: concept going into the year because it was all about
- 15:31Speaker 2: this brand-new, fresh offense, and sometimes change is needed. But
- 15:34Speaker 2: you're going through growing pains because– I mean, you had
- 15:38Speaker 2: a lot of breakdowns and protection on your offensive line
- 15:41Speaker 2: in that game. And you can say that didn't happen
- 15:44Speaker 2: very often under Stoutland. And it's not fair to say, well,
- 15:47Speaker 2: Chris Cooper sucks. It's his first go with the Eagles.
- 15:49Speaker 2: It's his first go around. He's trying to replace a legend.
- 15:51Speaker 2: But this is the life they chose.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Like they didn't hire an offensive coordinator who had years
- 15:58Speaker 2: and years of experience. who could bring in an offensive
- 16:00Speaker 2: line coach and a run game designer who had years
- 16:02Speaker 2: and years of experience. And Nick Sirianni has not hired
- 16:06Speaker 2: a senior offensive assistant who I think can be very,
- 16:10Speaker 2: very valuable. Adam Kaplan has made this point a thousand times.
- 16:13Speaker 2: They're trying to go through these growing pains without a
- 16:17Speaker 2: long-time veteran head coach to say, hey, guys, you may
- 16:19Speaker 2: want to try this or that.
- 16:20Speaker 1: All right?
- 16:21Speaker 2: So you can blame Sirianni for that. That's on him.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Manion is a first-time play caller. The past game coordinator
- 16:29Speaker 1: did call plays in Tampa last year, correct? He did.
- 16:33Speaker 2: I wouldn't quite call him a veteran because he did
- 16:35Speaker 2: it for like a year or two. When they were
- 16:37Speaker 2: talking about maybe bringing in Greg Olson, that made me,
- 16:41Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, that would be.
- 16:42Speaker 1: A slam dunk. Not the broadcaster.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yeah, no, not the offensive coordinator who's been with all
- 16:48Speaker 2: the great West Coast coaches in a 30-year career. I
- 16:51Speaker 2: thought it would have been a slam dunk.
- 16:55Speaker 1: What do you, what do you, Mannion's in the booth.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Does that mean anything to you? Like you say, hey,
- 17:02Speaker 1: maybe if he's on the field, there's a better communication.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Is anything there?
- 17:06Speaker 2: No, I've never, I've tried to like not study it
- 17:09Speaker 2: as far as like data, but just go through who
- 17:13Speaker 2: coaches in the booth and who to coach and see
- 17:15Speaker 2: if there's some sort of like, oh, it's far, it's
- 17:19Speaker 2: so obvious that people who coach from the sideline are
- 17:21Speaker 2: more successful or vice versa. And I can't find it.
- 17:24Speaker 2: I can't. I don't have a strong conviction there.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I don't have a strong conviction there. But it's almost like,
- 17:32Speaker 1: wouldn't you want the quarterback to be able to talk face-to-face?
- 17:37Speaker 1: I know, but face-to-face. Not on the phone. Not on, like,
- 17:40Speaker 1: an iPad. Just, hey, man, let's talk here. Let's figure
- 17:45Speaker 1: this out on the goal line.
- 17:48Speaker 2: But then you trade off. I always think there's a
- 17:52Speaker 2: way better– ability to see everything going on from an
- 17:55Speaker 2: all 22 aerial viewpoint. Then when you're right there on
- 17:59Speaker 2: the side, you're right. All these people in your way,
- 18:01Speaker 2: you got your, your focus can get distracted. If someone's
- 18:04Speaker 2: coming up, if you are talking to someone when you're
- 18:06Speaker 2: trying to figure out the next play to play calls.
- 18:08Speaker 2: So I think it's easily to be emotionally divested when
- 18:12Speaker 2: you're in that kind of closed booth and right there
- 18:15Speaker 2: on the sideline. And sometimes I want play callers in
- 18:17Speaker 2: the heat of the moment to not feel that, that
- 18:20Speaker 2: crunch and be, I want them to be emotionally divested.
- 18:23Speaker 1: All right, real quick, and listen, I know we don't
- 18:26Speaker 1: have the answers here, but I would imagine Barkley's out Sunday, right?
- 18:34Speaker 2: Well, I mean, given that they have to take what
- 18:36Speaker 2: I've never flown to London, you have, right? How long
- 18:38Speaker 2: is that flight?
- 18:40Speaker 1: About six hours.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Oh, I thought it was longer than that. Okay, well,
- 18:42Speaker 2: that's still not great when you've got a hamstring injury, right?
- 18:44Speaker 2: I mean, making it back from a hamstring is usually
- 18:48Speaker 2: more than a week. depending on severity, but the fact
- 18:50Speaker 2: that it's a travel game to London probably complicates it
- 18:53Speaker 2: a little bit. They might even leave early, which might
- 18:56Speaker 2: complicate it a little bit.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Then you've got Quinion.
- 19:01Speaker 2: That was a hamstring as well, or a knee?
- 19:04Speaker 1: I think it was a hyperextended knee, hyperextension knee.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Yeah, you're right. We've got to get more information.
- 19:11Speaker 1: On a lot of this. It doesn't look good, though.
- 19:14Speaker 2: To your point, not with one single one of those injuries,
- 19:18Speaker 2: other than Dajin who went back in, did it seem
- 19:20Speaker 2: like that's a minor thing that they can probably be back?
- 19:26Speaker 2: Don't forget, Mike, the last two weeks, we have had
- 19:29Speaker 2: pop-up injuries in the middle of the week. that I
- 19:31Speaker 2: didn't know about on game day. So you've got to
- 19:33Speaker 2: be aware of that, too.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Hey, they didn't know until game day, apparently, for Lane Johnson.
- 19:38Speaker 1: He practiced all week, and apparently Sirianni didn't find out
- 19:42Speaker 1: until the day of the game. So they couldn't elevate
- 19:45Speaker 1: a tackle on Saturday by 4 o'clock. You had to
- 19:48Speaker 1: do that. That's why they didn't have somebody.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Well, I'll tell you what, though. I'll tell you what, though.
- 19:53Speaker 2: You were just about to say it. Fred Johnson was
- 19:55Speaker 2: already out. I thought it was borderline arrogant of them
- 19:58Speaker 2: the last two weeks to not elevate an offensive tackle
- 20:02Speaker 2: from the practice squad. I mean, if Maialata or– if
- 20:06Speaker 2: Bell had limped off that field the way everybody was,
- 20:09Speaker 2: in a rainy, slick condition, who's playing any tackle at
- 20:12Speaker 2: that point? Steen?
- 20:13Speaker 1: I would imagine Steen. Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:16Speaker 2: I'm sorry. That's not a good way to protect your players.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher prediction is Cam Juergens playing left guard on Sunday. Yeah.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Jeez.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Gee, thanks, man. Sorry. Just back on Wednesday for Football
