A surfer battled deadly conditions off Fitzroy Beach—30-40 knot winds and 2m swells—before being spotted struggling by a member of the public. Taranaki Police and Surf Life Saving New Zealand sprang into action, deploying a rescue boat and ATV team in under 40 minutes. The surfer was pulled safely ashore, hypothermic but stable, avoiding hospitalization.
