- 1:33Speaker 1: Allow me a moment to discuss the passing of Nancy Leonards,
- 1:39Speaker 1: whom I never met, and I wish I had the
- 1:43Speaker 1: story of Nancy Leonard. The story of slick Is, Indiana
- 1:53Speaker 1: is filled with absolutely incredible, surreal, almost insane stories. We
- 2:02Speaker 1: are we built a football stadium without a football team.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I say we.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I wasn't here, but it's an incredible story. We build
- 2:14Speaker 1: a football stadium that then gets the Ersay family to
- 2:23Speaker 1: come to Indianapolis to take a look when they're thinking
- 2:27Speaker 1: of moving the Colts and they take one look at
- 2:34Speaker 1: the place, they see the blue seats.
- 2:37Speaker 2: This is how the story is told to me. Maybe
- 2:39Speaker 2: it's true, maybe it's not.
- 2:41Speaker 1: They say the blue seats, so they're like, oh, that's
- 2:43Speaker 1: our color.
- 2:44Speaker 2: It was meant to be. That's that's insane, that's crazy.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Look at what this place did. The story of the
- 2:59Speaker 1: Circles City Mall i Argue is one of the great
- 3:02Speaker 1: stories in America. We need to build up downtown. How
- 3:07Speaker 1: do we build up downtown? You know what, We'll build
- 3:09Speaker 1: them all. You're in, You're in, you're in, you're in.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Not you're in, you're in.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Boom, they built a mall.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It's an incredible story of how these businesses came together
- 3:20Speaker 1: to create something for that that worked for everyone, that
- 3:23Speaker 1: was better. The story of Nancy and Slick Leonard and
- 3:31Speaker 1: by the way, a great write up of Nancy Leonard
- 3:34Speaker 1: over at NBA dot com slash Pacers. Here is a
- 3:40Speaker 1: basketball team that wasn't gonna make it. There was no
- 3:45Speaker 1: money left.
- 3:46Speaker 2: They didn't know how they were gonna go on, and
- 3:50Speaker 2: Nancy and Slick Leonard engage, go at it.
- 3:57Speaker 1: And create this this telethon. Hey, everybody, we need to
- 4:05Speaker 1: keep our team here. We need to sell eight thousand
- 4:10Speaker 1: season tickets to raise enough money to keep the franchise afloat.
- 4:16Speaker 2: And so.
- 4:19Speaker 1: From July third to July fourth, nineteen seventy seven, they
- 4:26Speaker 1: hold a telethon.
- 4:31Speaker 2: To keep the team here, I.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Swear to you if you don't want to live in
- 4:38Speaker 1: Indiana after hearing those stories, I don't know where it
- 4:41Speaker 1: is you want to live, but best of luck to you,
- 4:44Speaker 1: as I've learned to say, bless your heart. Nancy Leonard
- 4:50Speaker 1: passed away at the age of ninety three yesterday.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And I said this.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Months ago, and I'm on it was on a Twitter X.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I'm going to repeat myself. We need a statue.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Now.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I have an idea.
- 5:06Speaker 1: We don't need a statue that is like Peyton Manning
- 5:09Speaker 1: statue in front of Lucas Oil. We need a statue
- 5:13Speaker 1: that the people can connect with because they Slick and
- 5:17Speaker 1: Nancy Leonard turned to the people and said, we need
- 5:19Speaker 1: to connect with you.
- 5:20Speaker 2: You need to connect with this team.
- 5:22Speaker 1: We need a statue in front of gamebridge Field House
- 5:26Speaker 1: that isn't bigger than life, that is actual size that
- 5:29Speaker 1: people could put their arm around and take a picture
- 5:31Speaker 1: with and give a hug to. The kind of statue
- 5:34Speaker 1: in the bronze that eventually from so many people showing
- 5:37Speaker 1: their thanks and appreciation and making sure they take their
- 5:39Speaker 1: picture with Slick and Nancy, that it starts to that
- 5:42Speaker 1: the finish starts to rub off and it starts to
- 5:45Speaker 1: be warned because they were of the people, very clearly,
- 5:48Speaker 1: quite obviously from every single story.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Again, I never had the pleasure of meeting them.
- 5:53Speaker 1: We need that that has to happen. It transcends the politics,
- 5:58Speaker 1: It transcends the sports, it transcends the madness. It's a
- 6:01Speaker 1: picture of two people who said we can make a difference.
- 6:04Speaker 1: My gosh, if we're not going to exalt and glorify
- 6:07Speaker 1: people who do that in our society, what exactly are
- 6:10Speaker 1: we doing? And the way to do it is not
- 6:13Speaker 1: through corporate sponsorship, although there's gonna be a ton of
- 6:15Speaker 1: corporate sponsorship for something like this. The way to do
- 6:18Speaker 1: it is to do it the way they did it
- 6:20Speaker 1: and go to the people. We need to put on
- 6:23Speaker 1: a telephone where the Indiana Pacers and the Indiana Fever
- 6:29Speaker 1: answer the phones. There is not a television station, there's
- 6:33Speaker 1: not a radio station that wouldn't be involved.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I don't get to speak for Urban one, but watch me,
- 6:38Speaker 2: hell yes, we will all of us, B one.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Of five seven, the fan, Hank TLC all all of it,
- 6:49Speaker 1: all of it. There is not a station that won't
- 6:55Speaker 1: say we're in. There is not a Hoosier who could
- 6:57Speaker 1: even think of not saying, let's be a part this
- 7:00Speaker 1: and the donation we're looking for nineteen dollars and seventy
- 7:04Speaker 1: seven cents to match the year in nineteen seventy seven
- 7:08Speaker 1: when they had the telethon to begin with, I swear
- 7:14Speaker 1: to you, if we don't do this, we're insane. And
- 7:17Speaker 1: I'm not one hundred percent sure how to put this on,
- 7:19Speaker 1: but I do know how to say, let's go do
- 7:23Speaker 1: this thing. This is a must. This is a must
- 7:31Speaker 1: that can actually bring a city and a state and
- 7:33Speaker 1: a region together.
- 7:35Speaker 2: We should, for just one moment, look at that statue
- 7:39Speaker 2: of those two.
- 7:39Speaker 1: They are local artists who can make this happen. Look
- 7:42Speaker 1: at each other and say, man, that's something to aspire to.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I'm all in in every single way.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Gosh, I hope we can do this.
