- 0:57Speaker 5: as we do every Thursday at nine o'clock, Leggy. Since
- 1:02Speaker 5: we last spoke, free agency has opened up. The Broncos
- 1:06Speaker 5: I think have been remarkably, remarkably good in the decisions
- 1:11Speaker 5: that they have made. But for the moment, let's start
- 1:15Speaker 5: from the beginning. Hufanga Dre Greenlaw, I know there's some
- 1:18Speaker 5: injury risk that's to them, But do you see a
- 1:22Speaker 5: weakness right now with the Broncos starting defense as currently constituted.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Now? And you know, if healthy is the big phrase
- 1:30Speaker 3: for their free agency class, even you know Evan Ingram,
- 1:34Speaker 3: you know, missed half the season last year. So you know,
- 1:38Speaker 3: all three guys at the top of their free agency
- 1:41Speaker 3: class are coming off an injury season. So if they
- 1:45Speaker 3: get it right and get some good fortune, I think
- 1:49Speaker 3: they've done very well. And you know, they got the
- 1:51Speaker 3: prices they got because of those injury questions. So but
- 1:56Speaker 3: I mean, Hufango is you know, having an all Pro
- 2:00Speaker 3: season when he tore his ACL a couple of years ago.
- 2:03Speaker 3: And you know Greenlaw uh is just one of the
- 2:07Speaker 3: better weak side linebackers in the free agency class. But
- 2:12Speaker 3: and Ingram, you know, they haven't had a pass catching
- 2:15Speaker 3: tight end like Ingram, you know, for a long time.
- 2:18Speaker 3: I mean the guy at one hundred catches a couple
- 2:21Speaker 3: of years ago, so you know, they haven't had anybody
- 2:23Speaker 3: live in that neighborhood ever, you know, recently in tight ends.
- 2:28Speaker 3: So again, if they've got it right, if they you know,
- 2:32Speaker 3: if if their physicals and you know, all their due
- 2:36Speaker 3: diligence proves to be correct. You know, these guys are
- 2:39Speaker 3: playing as soon as they walk through the door. And
- 2:43Speaker 3: a defense that finished number one and some of the
- 2:46Speaker 3: most important advanced metrics gets two guys at the you
- 2:52Speaker 3: know that are impact players at the two spots where
- 2:55Speaker 3: they needed it.
- 2:58Speaker 2: They're on is Mike Dernellie, Hang on, vict go ahead.
- 3:01Speaker 6: Give me a comp for Hufunga if you don't mind.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Like what player does he remind you of?
- 3:06Speaker 3: You know, it's it's sort of like, you know, I
- 3:09Speaker 3: hate to do it with a Hall of Famer, but
- 3:10Speaker 3: paulam Malu liked. I guess would be my.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Hair makes it easy, right.
- 3:16Speaker 3: No, I mean he touches the ball a lot, which
- 3:20Speaker 3: for a safety is you know, he's either knocking the
- 3:23Speaker 3: ball out, knocking the ball down. He is around where
- 3:26Speaker 3: the action is, and you know they need that kind
- 3:29Speaker 3: of safety. They're Uh, they were. For all the aggressiveness
- 3:33Speaker 3: on their defense last year, they were they were pretty
- 3:37Speaker 3: conservative with their safety play on the back end. They
- 3:40Speaker 3: just wanted to make sure guys were in the right place.
- 3:43Speaker 3: And when they did their review at the end of
- 3:44Speaker 3: the season, Uh, they just found a lot of sort
- 3:48Speaker 3: of you know, maybe errors we didn't think about a lot,
- 3:52Speaker 3: but they they found a lot of errors, you know,
- 3:54Speaker 3: where the two safeties were putting their eyes, where they
- 3:57Speaker 3: were lining up, those kinds of things. So they they
- 4:00Speaker 3: wanted to add some impact there and I think they
- 4:03Speaker 3: get that. But he you know, he's an active player
- 4:07Speaker 3: and at his best was at an all pro level.
- 4:11Speaker 3: So that that's as good as you can find in
- 4:13Speaker 3: free agency. Again, it's he's missed what thirty eight games
- 4:17Speaker 3: in his career with a variety of injuries because of
- 4:20Speaker 3: the way he plays. Yeah, you know, he's he's in
- 4:23Speaker 3: the red he's redlining in a lot physically. And you know,
- 4:27Speaker 3: those guys often, you know, sort of take themselves out
- 4:32Speaker 3: of the game because just the way they play.
- 4:36Speaker 7: Jeff, Now that they've done this, how much I know
- 4:39Speaker 7: teams don't change their philosophy, but how much does this
- 4:42Speaker 7: allow the Broncos in the draft to wander a little
- 4:45Speaker 7: bit to a guy that they really like as opposed
- 4:49Speaker 7: to just best player available.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Well, I mean, moj I always think when you know,
- 4:55Speaker 3: when you phrase the guy they would really like is
- 4:58Speaker 3: probably their best player of avail, you know, in terms
- 5:02Speaker 3: of great because you know, I think that's why they
- 5:05Speaker 3: liked last year's class so much. In their mind, they
- 5:09Speaker 3: drafted players, you know, a full round or more after
- 5:14Speaker 3: after where they had them graded, so they thought they
- 5:16Speaker 3: were getting awesome value on their board. So, but this
- 5:21Speaker 3: does what you want in free agency. This is how
- 5:24Speaker 3: you should do it. You know, free agency should be,
- 5:27Speaker 3: you know, picking off your needs so you can you
- 5:31Speaker 3: can build your team in the draft, and you know,
- 5:34Speaker 3: just keep stocking the depth chart with as much good
- 5:39Speaker 3: you know, talent on on rookie contracts as possible. You know,
- 5:44Speaker 3: don't leave, don't leave really good players on the board
- 5:47Speaker 3: for other people to take because you're chasing a position.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Those are the teams that draft poorly. And when the
- 5:54Speaker 3: Broncos have had poor drafts, that's what they've done. They've
- 5:57Speaker 3: chased positions instead of take players.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Jeff heard a report from Adam Schefter earlier today talking
- 6:06Speaker 5: about the Broncos might be interested in Cooper Cup.
- 6:08Speaker 2: What have you heard?
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I never say they're not interested in anybody.
- 6:14Speaker 3: They will consider anyone at this point. I mean, they
- 6:17Speaker 3: they know the division they're in, they know, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 3: I think things are only getting tougher in the AFC
- 6:25Speaker 3: West with Pete Carroll's arrival and kind of what they've
- 6:28Speaker 3: done and with the Raiders this offseason, so they know
- 6:32Speaker 3: where they're at and they know they can't leave any
- 6:35Speaker 3: opportunity to get impact. It's just you know, what are
- 6:40Speaker 3: you what Cooper Cupp are you getting? You know, that's
- 6:44Speaker 3: always the question. He's almost thirty two, you know, I
- 6:50Speaker 3: think he's you know, he's not at the level of
- 6:53Speaker 3: where when he won the Triple Crown. You know, I
- 6:56Speaker 3: think sometimes when we talk about veteran free agents, we
- 6:59Speaker 3: talk about their best season, no matter how long ago
- 7:02Speaker 3: it was. And you know, look, you know I want
- 7:05Speaker 3: to champion old people on their jobs as much as
- 7:08Speaker 3: possible because I am one. So uh, but you know,
- 7:13Speaker 3: if you're building your team, you got to consider that stuff.
- 7:17Speaker 3: They're interested, yes, because at his best, he's an impactful
- 7:22Speaker 3: route runner who will be exactly where bo Nicks needs
- 7:25Speaker 3: them to be on every play, uh, And they need
- 7:28Speaker 3: that in their offense. They need to get people off
- 7:31Speaker 3: of Sutton, you know, and and free up things down
- 7:35Speaker 3: the field. You know, they need to keep people from
- 7:38Speaker 3: from mashing up the middle of the field on them
- 7:41Speaker 3: the way they have been. So yeah, they're interested, But
- 7:45Speaker 3: I think it would have to be at the right price,
- 7:47Speaker 3: and I think they would have to really think through
- 7:50Speaker 3: how many snaps is he getting? Who does it cost
- 7:54Speaker 3: when he gets those snaps? Will they be preventing the
- 7:57Speaker 3: development of anybody? All those things? But sure they would
- 8:00Speaker 3: be interested because he he would give you everything he has,
- 8:04Speaker 3: you know, on every play.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Got a two parter here for you, Jeff.
- 8:07Speaker 6: Could you see now now that Javonte's gone, He's gone
- 8:10Speaker 6: to Dallas and not sure about their running back status?
- 8:13Speaker 6: Could you see them going free agency maybe bring in
- 8:16Speaker 6: some depth veteran to help us supplement that position. And
- 8:20Speaker 6: at the same time, could they at number twenty draft
- 8:23Speaker 6: of running back? How many running backs on your board
- 8:26Speaker 6: right now would qualify for the Broncos at number twenty?
- 8:30Speaker 3: Maybe you know, maybe only one? Really a lot of people?
- 8:34Speaker 3: Well again, I you know, maybe you know, Jente, I
- 8:38Speaker 3: think for sure Hampton is a guy. You know, I've
- 8:42Speaker 3: got I've got guys in the league telling me he's
- 8:45Speaker 3: the top fifteen player on their board. But you know,
- 8:49Speaker 3: would a team take him there? You know, that's it's
- 8:51Speaker 3: always the the pure grade versus the value of the
- 8:55Speaker 3: position and all that. The issue in the running back
- 8:58Speaker 3: in the draft is this is an awesome class. You
- 9:01Speaker 3: would not have to go at twenty to get a
- 9:04Speaker 3: guy who could walk in and contribute. I think all
- 9:07Speaker 3: the way down through the second and third rounds, they're
- 9:10Speaker 3: gonna be running backs who could walk in as the
- 9:13Speaker 3: rookies and participate and have impact in the Broncos offense.
- 9:18Speaker 3: And you know, I think a guy like Samson from
- 9:22Speaker 3: Tennessee and I think atn from Georgia are two guys
- 9:27Speaker 3: that would interest them down the board a little further
- 9:30Speaker 3: that you wouldn't take it twenty, but they're gonna come
- 9:33Speaker 3: in and do things for you as soon as they
- 9:35Speaker 3: get here.
- 9:36Speaker 6: What do you think of Devin Nil, the running back
- 9:38Speaker 6: from Kansas.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Yeah, no, again, he breaks tackles. He running back coaches
- 9:43Speaker 3: love that kind of guy because he he gets through
- 9:46Speaker 3: the first tackle. You know, an awful lot. And I
- 9:51Speaker 3: just think of this. You know, if it was any
- 9:53Speaker 3: other year, you know, he might be a guy we're
- 9:56Speaker 3: talking about, but he may not be in the top
- 9:59Speaker 3: ten running backs of this class. Wow, just because it's
- 10:02Speaker 3: so deep. I mean, you're talking this is the best
- 10:06Speaker 3: class of running backs I think I can remember ever.
- 10:09Speaker 3: I'd have to go back and really dig through the binders.
- 10:12Speaker 3: But this is a really, really good class of running
- 10:15Speaker 3: backs and I will be stunned if they don't take
- 10:18Speaker 3: at least one of these guys because it's too good
- 10:20Speaker 3: to pass on.
- 10:22Speaker 2: You know, I look at it too, Jeff.
- 10:24Speaker 7: I guess I shouldn't be because the guy's emerge at
- 10:26Speaker 7: every position. But always like, man, that guy was a
- 10:30Speaker 7: fourth round running back and now he's a total player.
- 10:32Speaker 7: I mean, he's really helping Team X, you know what
- 10:34Speaker 7: I mean. It just feels like if the scheme is
- 10:38Speaker 7: right for that player, you can get them down the
- 10:40Speaker 7: line and they're gonna make an impact on your club.
- 10:44Speaker 7: Is that what you're talking about when when you've got
- 10:46Speaker 7: the opportunity to maybe wait on a guy but come
- 10:49Speaker 7: into the Broncos and be a featured type of back.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Yeah, twenty mileage. I just think in the first round,
- 10:56Speaker 3: that's what if Jesse's out there for me every Okay, Ever,
- 11:01Speaker 3: if the best guy at that spot is a wide
- 11:05Speaker 3: receiver or an inside linebacker, you take them and and
- 11:09Speaker 3: you figure it out later, because the teams that take
- 11:12Speaker 3: all the good players win a lot of games, and
- 11:14Speaker 3: they don't, you know, the Ravens. Don't go into the
- 11:17Speaker 3: draft ever, you sitting down at twenty five, twenty seven, thirty.
- 11:23Speaker 3: They don't win every year because they pick for need
- 11:26Speaker 3: down there. They take the best guy, they don't care
- 11:29Speaker 3: what he plays. They and then they say, give me
- 11:32Speaker 3: all these good players and we'll figure it out as
- 11:34Speaker 3: we go. And that's I think that's the the thing
- 11:37Speaker 3: the Broncos have to do. I mean, they they surrendered
- 11:40Speaker 3: the the blue chip area three drafts with Russell Wilson
- 11:44Speaker 3: and Sean Payton coming here, So that's that's still a
- 11:48Speaker 3: big hole that that they're dealing with in their developmental area.
- 11:53Speaker 3: I mean, they got to to me, they have to
- 11:55Speaker 3: keep draft picks and keep using them to get players
- 11:59Speaker 3: because they've got a three year window there when they
- 12:02Speaker 3: weren't able to sort of participate at the top of
- 12:06Speaker 3: the board. So I don't think they can waste any
- 12:09Speaker 3: of their chances to do that.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Now, what do you think they're feeling is with estimate?
- 12:15Speaker 3: You know, I they like him, but you know, the
- 12:19Speaker 3: playoff game will always baffle me. I just don't I
- 12:22Speaker 3: don't get it. You know, you don't. You don't put
- 12:26Speaker 3: him out there and then the guy you put out
- 12:28Speaker 3: there instead of him, you didn't even use So I just,
- 12:31Speaker 3: you know, the wild card getting able to baffle me
- 12:33Speaker 3: for a long time, as far as the run game,
- 12:36Speaker 3: the running backs, all of it. But I don't know
- 12:40Speaker 3: how they could look at him practice, you know, what
- 12:43Speaker 3: I've seen in practice and what I've seen in games.
- 12:45Speaker 3: I don't know how you can look at that and think,
- 12:49Speaker 3: you know that he's unable to participate. I mean, that's
- 12:51Speaker 3: a player he should be used, and I think that's
- 12:54Speaker 3: part of you know, I think he's in the plan.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Their issue is in Sean Payton's offense. That pass protecting
- 13:04Speaker 3: running back is a big deal, And it's a lot
- 13:07Speaker 3: bigger deal than maybe the fans, to us, to anybody else.
- 13:11Speaker 3: It matters to them, and that's how they're going to
- 13:14Speaker 3: fill a lot of the roles on some of those downs,
- 13:17Speaker 3: is who they feel like can do the things Javante
- 13:21Speaker 3: did on those downs, because that's why Javante was playing
- 13:25Speaker 3: so much right on those downs when everyone was so
- 13:28Speaker 3: frustrated about why he was playing.
- 13:30Speaker 5: Well, let me ask you the periodic question that we
- 13:33Speaker 5: always ask then, because Sean Payton did not run the ball,
- 13:36Speaker 5: has not run the ball, consistently for two straight years here.
- 13:39Speaker 5: But he did run the ball. He did run the
- 13:41Speaker 5: ball consistently in New Orleans, So he didn't trust the
- 13:45Speaker 5: personnel in the backfield. If he got somebody that was
- 13:48Speaker 5: a good running back, would he do it differently or
- 13:50Speaker 5: is this all a mental thing of how he wants
- 13:52Speaker 5: this offense to look well?
- 13:54Speaker 3: You know, he's got the headset, so ultimately, his complaints
- 13:58Speaker 3: about how it looks or you know, they're not doing
- 14:01Speaker 3: something enough, you know, fall on him. You know, he's
- 14:05Speaker 3: the guy with the headset.
- 14:06Speaker 5: But does he not trust did he not trust guys
- 14:08Speaker 5: like Javonte and estimated Julie last year to do it
- 14:10Speaker 5: effectively enough?
- 14:12Speaker 3: That was a question. I asked a lot of people
- 14:13Speaker 3: who've worked for him last year and who've played for him,
- 14:17Speaker 3: and they saw Sean Payton that that moved around the
- 14:21Speaker 3: play card more here than he has in New Orleans,
- 14:25Speaker 3: that less of Hey, these three plays are really working.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Let's just keep rocking that until they don't work. There
- 14:32Speaker 3: was a more of a move around. You know, their
- 14:35Speaker 3: first drives would often look good, and then they would
- 14:38Speaker 3: depart from the things they did on those first drives,
- 14:42Speaker 3: you know, and go do other things, and I think
- 14:45Speaker 3: sometimes they lump all that in the We had to
- 14:48Speaker 3: make adjustments, but sometimes you didn't have to make adjustments.
- 14:52Speaker 3: It was working great. It probably would have worked a
- 14:54Speaker 3: little longer, but that's what I see that. You know,
- 14:58Speaker 3: the run game for them is about commit Hey, you know,
- 15:01Speaker 3: I'm not talking about return to the eighties or anything.
- 15:05Speaker 3: You know that there are good running teams that only
- 15:07Speaker 3: run the ball thirty eight percent of the time. But
- 15:09Speaker 3: they're good running teams. They run at the right time,
- 15:12Speaker 3: They got the right people. You know, they stress the defense.
- 15:17Speaker 3: But again with all these nickel defenses, you're facing defenses
- 15:21Speaker 3: that have linebackers that are the size of safeties used
- 15:24Speaker 3: to be. You know, it's just you've got to pound
- 15:27Speaker 3: it in there at some point, no matter how smart
- 15:30Speaker 3: you want to be, and no matter how much you
- 15:32Speaker 3: want to throw the ball. The successful offenses right now
- 15:36Speaker 3: have found a place for the run game. And you know,
- 15:41Speaker 3: in the Broncos Division, I'll keep saying it. I think
- 15:44Speaker 3: keeping the ball has merit. I know that's not fun
- 15:47Speaker 3: to talk about that time of possession as a dogus
- 15:50Speaker 3: stat and all that. I get it, but at some
- 15:53Speaker 3: point it's a lot harder for the homes to score
- 15:56Speaker 3: without the ball. Jeff.
- 15:58Speaker 7: Last thing for me, real quick, there's a lot of
- 16:00Speaker 7: freezing quarterbacks out there. You know, some names that that
- 16:03Speaker 7: that that people know, like James of course, and Cousins,
- 16:08Speaker 7: all the Trey Lances out there. Are all these guys
- 16:11Speaker 7: going to find a job in one way or another.
- 16:14Speaker 7: I mean, what are we looking at here?
- 16:16Speaker 3: Yeah? Well, I mean the quarterback class is thin in
- 16:19Speaker 3: the draft, so it's hard for me to believe all
- 16:22Speaker 3: these guys won't have a place. But we're really seeing
- 16:25Speaker 3: modern free agency MOS. The first two days Monday Tuesday,
- 16:29Speaker 3: the negotiating period. That's the player's time, maybe maybe a
- 16:35Speaker 3: little of Wednesday too, that that's really the player's leverage
- 16:40Speaker 3: in free agency. And if you're not one of the
- 16:42Speaker 3: guys who agrees to a deal Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday,
- 16:47Speaker 3: then you're on the team's terms. I mean, look at
- 16:49Speaker 3: all the one year deals you see from Wednesday on,
- 16:54Speaker 3: you know, and by on I mean all the way
- 16:56Speaker 3: to Mini camp. You know it'll be nothing but one
- 17:00Speaker 3: in two year deals. Now for the rest of the
- 17:03Speaker 3: you're on the team's clock now. And all these veteran quarterbacks,
- 17:08Speaker 3: uh are at the whim of these teams who want
- 17:10Speaker 3: to see, okay, with the dust settles, how do we
- 17:12Speaker 3: look how do we look here? And what do we
- 17:15Speaker 3: you know, which one of these guys will come in
- 17:17Speaker 3: and behave and be a good backup for us. And
- 17:20Speaker 3: that's some you know, free agency is that's how it looks.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Now.
- 17:25Speaker 2: There's a bunch of former Broncos.
- 17:27Speaker 7: I mean, you got Russ obviously, you got Brandon Allen,
- 17:29Speaker 7: you got Jeff Friscoll, you got Rip, you got you
- 17:32Speaker 7: got all these different guys floating around up there. I
- 17:35Speaker 7: don't know, It's just it just looks like a lot
- 17:36Speaker 7: of names to me. And I'm like, I don't see
- 17:38Speaker 7: how all these guys find find a gig.
- 17:41Speaker 3: They may not, you know it. Maybe you know, you
- 17:43Speaker 3: gotta keep working out and people bring you in and
- 17:46Speaker 3: I mean, just think about it. The Lions brought in
- 17:48Speaker 3: Teddy Bridgewater at the end of the season last year.
- 17:50Speaker 3: He was coaching high school football. So it's hard for
- 17:52Speaker 3: me to believe that, uh, a lot of these guys
- 17:55Speaker 3: won't have at least some employment. And with the practice squads,
- 17:59Speaker 3: now you're you're looking at some future veteran practice squad guys.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Here moving forward to.
- 18:06Speaker 6: My TikTok account has been hacked and I'm wondering can

- 18:13Speaker 3: Yeah? You know, you know me. I'm an expert. I
- 18:16Speaker 3: am the only person on planet Earth who has never
- 18:19Speaker 3: had a TikTok account.
- 18:20Speaker 2: So there you go, me too, Leggy.
- 18:23Speaker 3: I just can't. I can't believe anyone would be interested
- 18:25Speaker 3: in my don't in.
- 18:28Speaker 5: Your dances, and like, like you stand up and give
- 18:31Speaker 5: me a good old Jackson the homes.

- 18:36Speaker 2: Let's get some music for Jeff.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Like I like to keep I have to keep my moves,
- 18:39Speaker 3: you know, in the private realm. Let's just say.
- 18:42Speaker 5: That, you know, you know, like not not even five seconds,
- 18:46Speaker 5: little hand movement anything.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Oh no, come on, come on, Jeff.
- 18:52Speaker 7: What was the last time you did dance? What whose
- 18:54Speaker 7: wedding were you? When you the last time you danced?
- 18:58Speaker 3: Let's see. Now, you know, I've had some I've had
- 19:01Speaker 3: some questivus. There's no question, all right, I give you
- 19:06Speaker 3: all right, if I give you five seconds, it'll live forever.
- 19:09Speaker 3: So there's no way, pretty.
- 19:11Speaker 5: Much, Jeff, Mark, Jeff, I'm just gonna have to do
- 19:15Speaker 5: this then from here on out until the draft starts,
- 19:18Speaker 5: you either give me five seconds of a TikTok dance move,
- 19:21Speaker 5: or you give.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Me one of your top one hundred. You choose which one.
- 19:24Speaker 5: I don't care which one, but you have to do
- 19:26Speaker 5: one of them.
- 19:27Speaker 3: That feels like a threat.
- 19:31Speaker 2: I could never threaten Legwald. I'm terrified of you. You
- 19:33Speaker 2: got you got like bear pause for hands. I wouldn't dare. Uh.

- 19:51Speaker 5: start with a job in.
- 19:52Speaker 2: With a career. You guys agree with me, by the
- 19:53Speaker 2: way I am.
- 19:54Speaker 6: You were like a world class answer and we didn't know.
- 19:57Speaker 2: It's just hidden.
- 19:58Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean if you just pulled out some were
- 20:00Speaker 6: ridiculous moves I had.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Do you guys agree with me on this?
- 20:04Speaker 5: Lakewold strikes me as a guy that was like a
- 20:06Speaker 5: world class wrestler and like high school in college and

- 20:11Speaker 5: a tussle with him, he would break you in half.
- 20:14Speaker 5: He seems like one of those stout like hands the
- 20:18Speaker 5: size of anvil's kind of guy that I'm not messing
- 20:21Speaker 5: with him.
- 20:22Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 20:24Speaker 5: So it wasn't a threat, like you as a request
- 20:27Speaker 5: either a five second TikTok dance or one of your
