- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of Not Another Football Podcast with myself,
- 0:08Speaker 1: Simon Donnelly and Jackie Might In No Matter. We're delighted
- 0:12Speaker 1: to say where in the presence of snook out the
- 0:14Speaker 1: greatness we have one of the finest players of our
- 0:18Speaker 1: John Higgins.
- 0:20Speaker 2: You're doing nicety seas great boys life good.
- 0:24Speaker 3: I better now the other night there was Scotland winning brilliant, great,
- 0:27Speaker 3: great night.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Good.
- 0:29Speaker 3: I've just I've not picked my cuy ups and said
- 0:32Speaker 3: world losing the World Championships. So I don't know what
- 0:35Speaker 3: you guys were like, obviously near the end of your
- 0:37Speaker 3: careers when it.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Comes to the off season.
- 0:40Speaker 3: But I just feel as if if I didn't pick
- 0:42Speaker 3: an off snucker Cup, I wouldn't.
- 0:45Speaker 2: It's just how long is there the off season?
- 0:50Speaker 3: Well, there's there's differences with some of the turns this
- 0:53Speaker 3: year were some of the top sixteen. Now we're seeded
- 0:56Speaker 3: in the later stage of the Tourrents, which has not
- 0:58Speaker 3: been like that for the last ten years, so it
- 1:03Speaker 3: gives us a little bit more time off. So my
- 1:05Speaker 3: next tournament is is the end of July and then
- 1:08Speaker 3: the August in Shanghai, Shanghai Masters that starts all over again,
- 1:14Speaker 3: starts all over again.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Can I take you back to the recent worlds then?
- 1:17Speaker 1: Because I watched it brilliant again, unbelievable to the semis,
- 1:21Speaker 1: just we better rubby the.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Green in the end. No, no, really, I had my
- 1:26Speaker 2: chances signed.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I was thirteen, I living up against Sean murfigure in
- 1:32Speaker 3: the final session.
- 1:33Speaker 2: And I felt I felt good. I felt felt good.
- 1:37Speaker 3: But you're playing against great players, and I think I
- 1:41Speaker 3: broke off twice, left him a latter shot and he's
- 1:44Speaker 3: went one hundred hundred, so before you know, you've got
- 1:47Speaker 3: a two frame cushion. Then you're scoring thirteen all Then
- 1:50Speaker 3: I managed to regroup a little bit, got to fifteen
- 1:52Speaker 3: thirteen at that felt okay again. But then I came
- 1:56Speaker 3: out and he was really strong, really positive, and sometimes
- 1:58Speaker 3: it can put you on the feet a little bit,
- 2:00Speaker 3: and I just welted at the end a little bit.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Now that happens.
- 2:05Speaker 3: It happens because I says it at the end that
- 2:07Speaker 3: when you're getting a little bit older, your your action
- 2:10Speaker 3: begins to break down at certain points where in previous
- 2:13Speaker 3: years it maybe winter.
- 2:14Speaker 2: And yeah, it's a format as well.
- 2:17Speaker 4: In in the world.
- 2:17Speaker 2: It's it's long and just long it's just a mental
- 2:21Speaker 2: mental torture some time.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And actually you're up and I went away and make
- 2:24Speaker 1: my dinner or something. I came back and I can
- 2:26Speaker 1: believe it pegged it back again.
- 2:28Speaker 3: A Well, it's one of the things that it's just
- 2:31Speaker 3: you're on you're on the treadmill. Every night, you're you're
- 2:34Speaker 3: going to sleep sometime. And through that turn, I was
- 2:36Speaker 3: always going to sleep my deficit. And it was funny
- 2:39Speaker 3: because that final day on the Friday night and into
- 2:42Speaker 3: the Saturday, that was the only time during a tournament
- 2:46Speaker 3: where I was leading because it was always going to sleep.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Two behind the four behind us eleven.
- 2:51Speaker 3: So you get a different mindset, whereas when you're thirteen
- 2:55Speaker 3: or living up you're sort of think like, how do
- 2:58Speaker 3: I protect this a little bit? Which is not my
- 3:00Speaker 3: the right way to go about things. It's it's it's
- 3:02Speaker 3: it's mental tortures.
- 3:03Speaker 4: What it's the biggest difference.
- 3:05Speaker 5: And as you get older you think as well as
- 3:08Speaker 5: it's recovery, you know your body there, I mean, what's
- 3:12Speaker 5: the difference in snooker just trying to get.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Rest, Jackie, That's what I asked. What I find out
- 3:16Speaker 3: there feel the concentration is waiving a little bit, but
- 3:21Speaker 3: just rest after each game, just getting back and just relaxed,
- 3:25Speaker 3: not not really going out and going for meals and
- 3:28Speaker 3: different things, just cutting your own dinner sometime and just
- 3:31Speaker 3: get as much rest as you can, because because when
- 3:34Speaker 3: you're down there on Sheffield and you've been siy, I
- 3:36Speaker 3: know you came here right a few years ago, but
- 3:39Speaker 3: you can't get away for it. So that's why I
- 3:41Speaker 3: always have an apartment. If you're stay in any hodelse,
- 3:44Speaker 3: if you walk into the reception, there's probably be always
- 3:47Speaker 3: people that are there to watch a snooker, so you want.
- 3:49Speaker 2: To come up and talk to you.
- 3:51Speaker 3: And how is the snooker going? And then you don't
- 3:53Speaker 3: want to be bad something. You just think you no,
- 3:54Speaker 3: I need to get.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Away for this.
- 3:56Speaker 3: That's why I always always trying to book an apartment.
- 3:58Speaker 3: You're just always just a for the buzz.
- 4:02Speaker 1: That tournament, what was the most stressful, because I've seen
- 4:06Speaker 1: you getting interviewed, I think just before I think it
- 4:09Speaker 1: must have been going to the World to split with Celtic.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Was it try on another World? Ended that season for Celtic.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I was crazy when man, it was crazy because they
- 4:17Speaker 2: put you on the spot and when I watched you,
- 4:20Speaker 2: you didn't sound too confident.
- 4:21Speaker 3: I wasn't he too confident, just because the way you
- 4:25Speaker 3: were hoping it was in previous years. You think normally
- 4:29Speaker 3: that time I'm going to Criswold the leak's done and
- 4:31Speaker 3: does it. But I in that time, I'm thinking, I
- 4:34Speaker 3: don't know. I don't think we can do it. We're
- 4:36Speaker 3: not playing well enough. But they just said the guts
- 4:39Speaker 3: and desire to get over that winning line. Henry on
- 4:42Speaker 3: your case, know he was piping up or he was
- 4:44Speaker 3: piped up body tournament, that bit the jam.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Now he lives in London, Now he does you know
- 4:51Speaker 2: what there is. But but I just didn't. I just
- 4:55Speaker 2: couldn't see his getting over that. I just know. I
- 4:57Speaker 2: don't know why.
- 4:58Speaker 3: I just didn't think every credit to them, they just
- 5:02Speaker 3: I mean, I was over in Asia after the World Championships.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I'd go over there for.
- 5:06Speaker 3: A couple of days and I come back on the
- 5:08Speaker 3: morning the Mother game, and I felt that was to
- 5:10Speaker 3: make a break game. And then when he equalized to
- 5:13Speaker 3: make it to each I'm thinking themselves, just don't lose,
- 5:16Speaker 3: because at that point, looks if Mother were stronger that
- 5:18Speaker 3: I'm just saying don't lose and then I've got a chance.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Like you never know what's going to happen the final
- 5:23Speaker 3: day Celtic couse. I just came out and went for it,
- 5:25Speaker 3: and who knows what would happened. But when they got
- 5:27Speaker 3: that goal to them just meant you only needed to
- 5:30Speaker 3: win the game, and that was a big home It's
- 5:32Speaker 3: just saying only, but it brought me back to when you.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Was one of the title one night. Yeah, I really
- 5:37Speaker 2: did die.
- 5:38Speaker 3: That atmosphere that then it was just it was just
- 5:42Speaker 3: in the air, just the atmosphere and the tension.
- 5:45Speaker 2: And and then when they.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Go over the line at the end, it was better
- 5:49Speaker 3: because I was there with my daughter. Now spent my daughter,
- 5:52Speaker 3: my brother was there, my niece, and you spent it
- 5:54Speaker 3: the four eas celebrating like mad. It was every credit
- 5:59Speaker 3: to the team and obviously Martin as well. It was incredible.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Back then you just won the first.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And I don't don't know.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I was won it and then you were praying the
- 6:12Speaker 3: trophy at half time a half time Big Sture care Well,
- 6:18Speaker 3: it's a big stud Big Steort. Carey contacted me. I
- 6:21Speaker 3: was pretty paralorly Big Stewart and he says, somebody knew
- 6:24Speaker 3: that I was pretty parlor of him, and they said
- 6:26Speaker 3: could you bring the trophy? And on the on the day,
- 6:30Speaker 3: I wasn't mery be there because I was meant to
- 6:32Speaker 3: be playing the tournament Inland, but I just fugged off
- 6:36Speaker 3: and I'm going, I'm gone, I'm going. And then after
- 6:41Speaker 3: the game, I was passing by Mudther macloud at one
- 6:44Speaker 3: point says all right, we are you doing?
- 6:46Speaker 2: He says, going down and say we've done to the
- 6:48Speaker 2: boys and what it's not and you just go.
- 6:52Speaker 3: And I seen seen news obviously like Paul Lambert different things,
- 6:55Speaker 3: but the Europeans black back and all that big map,
- 6:58Speaker 3: but they didn't have a clue.
- 6:59Speaker 2: He well, you was brilliant. I'll never forget that. That's
- 7:07Speaker 2: game as well. Yeah, yeah, that was.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I mean that's too, probably the most spectacular finishes that Celtic.
- 7:14Speaker 1: A further, as you said that, there've been so used
- 7:17Speaker 1: to in recent times getting the job done, but well
- 7:20Speaker 1: before this plant, so it's that added to you by excitement.
- 7:25Speaker 3: It was a mental bit, No, it was the I
- 7:29Speaker 3: thought it was significant as well.
- 7:31Speaker 2: The Grooms game never been getting back in the fire.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Three games as well, pulling together yeah, atmosphere because you
- 7:37Speaker 3: were at previous games and that that's his price, so
- 7:41Speaker 3: this's even sixty thousand there.
- 7:42Speaker 1: But you do need yeah to a sense that actually
- 7:45Speaker 1: from this split everybody was pulling direction for the full
- 7:49Speaker 1: Cup game was the first one, wasn't it?
- 7:50Speaker 2: I was down. I was down in Shaffl doing for
- 7:53Speaker 2: the full Cup game.
- 7:54Speaker 3: And then you've seen that three on your lap, right,
- 7:57Speaker 3: And then I just lost that Saturday and traveled up
- 8:01Speaker 3: on the Sunday morning and managed to get to I
- 8:03Speaker 3: didn't I didn't get toast the road, but watched in
- 8:06Speaker 3: the in the house, and then when they won, that
- 8:08Speaker 3: gave me at night three ago. And then I was
- 8:10Speaker 3: out in Asia when the week range of three one
- 8:13Speaker 3: it was crazy as well.
- 8:15Speaker 2: And then he said, mother, and then hats brilliant, brilliant,
- 8:19Speaker 2: great times. So let's get back then.
- 8:21Speaker 1: So obviously you're of the same age as myself and Jackie, Yes,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and a big Celtic supporter. As we know, when you
- 8:29Speaker 1: were growing up a lot of boys dames with football.
- 8:32Speaker 1: How did you what was a sneaker angle?
- 8:36Speaker 4: I wasn't.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I never really got now really good at snooker till
- 8:41Speaker 3: I was about fifteen right fifteen, did you have the
- 8:44Speaker 3: old kind of six by three in the house.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Seemed to have made the brother started and the older
- 8:50Speaker 2: brother had it.
- 8:50Speaker 3: When we go to the table, I was about nine,
- 8:53Speaker 3: he was about eleven or twelve.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Eye And then then the club opened up. Musha went
- 8:59Speaker 2: down to that.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Played Jim Donley just sadly just passed away there sadly
- 9:03Speaker 3: a few weeks ago there he he he was a
- 9:06Speaker 3: Scottish professional at the time. He opened it up, beautiful
- 9:08Speaker 3: club and then just started playing now most.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Days, but you're still playing football.
- 9:13Speaker 3: You still look at your mass, playing the bike, playing
- 9:16Speaker 3: playing all the different games and whatever you've got to play.
- 9:21Speaker 3: And I love to football. You thought you were pretty decent.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I always tell the story. I know it's probably good,
- 9:26Speaker 3: but I can always remember playing like a Scottish Cup
- 9:29Speaker 3: tie and I was apparently up against Charlie Miller because
- 9:32Speaker 3: he was the same age and I was in midfield,
- 9:35Speaker 3: and and somebody says, you're up against this boy.
- 9:38Speaker 2: He just sign one rangels Charlie Miller.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Oh my god, I think that just said to me
- 9:43Speaker 3: you never played football because you see somebody at different level.
- 9:49Speaker 2: You just said yourself, right, you've got a stick.
- 9:51Speaker 3: And then played and then just but it was only
- 9:57Speaker 3: really when I went into Glasgow. I don't know if
- 10:00Speaker 3: you guys would think the same thing. When you when
- 10:03Speaker 3: you play with better players, you come on yourself. You
- 10:05Speaker 3: make me good in your own little area. Rushier, you're
- 10:08Speaker 3: your best player in Rushia. But when I was going
- 10:10Speaker 3: into Glasgow and I was then at Manis, he was
- 10:14Speaker 3: just ready to term professional. And your other at the
- 10:17Speaker 3: club up at charm Cross, No, it was the club
- 10:19Speaker 3: at Dennis and Craig Park Masters. It was that one,
- 10:26Speaker 3: so I so it was that one that played in
- 10:29Speaker 3: when when I played there, when it was at fourteen fifteen, always.
- 10:34Speaker 2: The fifteen is quite. It's not late, I suppose.
- 10:37Speaker 3: But you look at I'm comparing now like you look
- 10:40Speaker 3: like that the babies when they started fifteen is quite
- 10:44Speaker 3: for you then to realize I'm decent at this, I'm
- 10:48Speaker 3: good at this. Well, I was playing, but I was
- 10:50Speaker 3: I was just staying at the same level now. And
- 10:52Speaker 3: you hear the stories what I do, and and you
- 10:54Speaker 3: read the magazines like Ronal Sullivan, Mark Williams, they were
- 10:57Speaker 3: playing in big amateur competition when they were like ten
- 11:01Speaker 3: eleven in London and England and they were everybody was
- 11:04Speaker 3: talking about them, whereas the first time that they'd probably
- 11:08Speaker 3: seen me play was I went to play in a
- 11:09Speaker 3: little World World Under sixteen event and a bum and
- 11:14Speaker 3: I'd been in practice in Glasgow for about six months
- 11:17Speaker 3: and I couldn't really tell if I was getting any better,
- 11:19Speaker 3: but people around about you were saying that you guys improvement,
- 11:22Speaker 3: he's improvement, he's improving.
- 11:24Speaker 2: And then I went down and I won the event.
- 11:27Speaker 3: I beat a Sullivan and I beat Matt Williams and
- 11:30Speaker 3: people were saying it was just a wee guy for Scotland.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Nobody had them.
- 11:33Speaker 3: And then after that tournament Ian Doyle Stephen Henry's magic.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Then I wanted to sign me up, but I didn't
- 11:40Speaker 3: want to go with him because I just loved being
- 11:42Speaker 3: in Glasgow, being about the guys.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Now just a patterner. I love being in that environment.
- 11:50Speaker 3: But he says, no, if you sign up, you can
- 11:53Speaker 3: come up to Sterling and practice with Stephen. And it
- 11:58Speaker 3: was too good an opportunity and Dad ad at me,
- 12:00Speaker 3: you've got to sign me this guy, and I was like.
- 12:02Speaker 2: I don't want it. I'm happy, but then I realized,
- 12:05Speaker 2: I'm thinking they have a chance.
- 12:06Speaker 3: He playing with the world number one Steven at the time,
- 12:09Speaker 3: it was too good opportunity to pass.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Was she like your kind of inspiration at the time,
- 12:12Speaker 1: obviously being a fellow scott Who did you follow at
- 12:15Speaker 1: that time?
- 12:16Speaker 2: Would I?
- 12:16Speaker 3: Well, it was Steve Davis at the time. He was
- 12:19Speaker 3: I don't know, because he was winning. I've met them,
- 12:21Speaker 3: and Henry came on the scene. All the Scottish boys
- 12:24Speaker 3: just looked up to him like an absolute god, because
- 12:26Speaker 3: you're saying, God, he's he's here and he could maybe
- 12:30Speaker 3: make it possible, and maybe he did make it possible
- 12:32Speaker 3: for a lot of is to go go on and
- 12:34Speaker 3: do Okay.
- 12:36Speaker 1: So you get to ninety eight, the first, your first
- 12:39Speaker 1: first World championship.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Incredible ken daughter in the final, care.
- 12:45Speaker 3: In the final, beat a Sullivan in the semi. Maybe
- 12:50Speaker 3: a session to spare.
- 12:52Speaker 2: She was a prob five years been a spec fact.
- 12:54Speaker 3: She termed pro when I was about seventeen. Yeah, nineteen
- 12:58Speaker 3: ninety two and then and this was nineteen ninety eight,
- 13:02Speaker 3: so twenty two twenty two, I was Kenny won the
- 13:08Speaker 3: previous year he'd be he'd beat Henry stop ten and
- 13:10Speaker 3: Henry'd won it five years in or or something. So
- 13:13Speaker 3: meeting into that tournament, there was a scenario would your
- 13:19Speaker 3: best being up twenty and he to best would have
- 13:23Speaker 3: been the quarter finals. Of course, I'd lost lost twice
- 13:26Speaker 3: one at a Sullivan and won two doctor I think
- 13:30Speaker 3: in the previous couple of years, so you were getting
- 13:33Speaker 3: at a certain stage. But then I think the tournament
- 13:38Speaker 3: before that, the World Championship was a brick show. I
- 13:41Speaker 3: beat Henry in the final, so that gave you little
- 13:43Speaker 3: little like chea up going there, and it put me
- 13:47Speaker 3: in a position where if the stario of stephen lost
- 13:50Speaker 3: in the first round, which he did, he lost to
- 13:53Speaker 3: Jimmy White in the first round, and if I won
- 13:55Speaker 3: the event, I would overtake him as world number one
- 13:57Speaker 3: as well.
- 13:58Speaker 2: So that was incentive.
- 14:00Speaker 3: It wasn't really in the setive that the tournament was
- 14:02Speaker 3: obviously the main thing in the World Championship. But then
- 14:05Speaker 3: against Ken I just played really well.
- 14:09Speaker 2: He was going on his defending champion.
- 14:11Speaker 3: He got the final, he'd probably be thinking a good
- 14:14Speaker 3: chance he could retain it. Back off to a good
- 14:16Speaker 3: start against I think I got six to in front
- 14:19Speaker 3: after the first session and then never really lost the advantage.
- 14:22Speaker 3: I just sort of kept kept the gap between us
- 14:24Speaker 3: and then and then one eighteen twelve, but.
- 14:29Speaker 2: It was one of it because it was the day
- 14:30Speaker 2: I think it was the day before the day before
- 14:34Speaker 2: he was playing on Ferman, right, and you wanted to
- 14:37Speaker 2: before no I was playing.
- 14:39Speaker 3: It was I was in the I was in the
- 14:41Speaker 3: middle of the final. Okay, use were playing on Ferman
- 14:44Speaker 3: and you'd score, didn't you? And then it was Falconbridge
- 14:47Speaker 3: or something equalized, So then that that meant, that meant
- 14:51Speaker 3: it went to the laughing at because of the day.
- 14:56Speaker 3: That meant it went to the final game. And did
- 14:58Speaker 3: that distracted at any point that did.
- 15:00Speaker 1: You get the chances?
- 15:05Speaker 3: Of course because your else to do. You're obviously trying
- 15:08Speaker 3: to concentrate. But somebodys popped the head in my brothers
- 15:10Speaker 3: and that seem like I won a lot, then messed
- 15:13Speaker 3: up and I come.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Off because I come off, I come off, and then
- 15:16Speaker 2: I was six two fronts.
- 15:17Speaker 3: You're delighted and buck rightly so, but then work took
- 15:27Speaker 3: probably better that you want in front of your own
- 15:29Speaker 3: fans than the following week.
- 15:31Speaker 1: But the follow me I obviously you've been there as
- 15:33Speaker 1: well with a trophy, but happy to say we didn't
- 15:36Speaker 1: They put them off completely final, but.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Even on since then, obviously even on they won it
- 15:43Speaker 3: four times. I was looking at some of your stats
- 15:45Speaker 3: last night.
- 15:45Speaker 1: You've been four other finals. I knew you'd been another final,
- 15:48Speaker 1: but four other finals. So I'm saying, you've got a
- 15:52Speaker 1: Sullivan who I think has been in eight or nine.
- 15:54Speaker 1: He's one seven. Hence he's been on that. You've been
- 15:57Speaker 1: in eight finals and.
- 15:59Speaker 3: He's been in nine. I think he's the most thing
- 16:01Speaker 3: a Sullivan has been in. I think Stevens won seven
- 16:07Speaker 3: some of them that I'd see one of them. One
- 16:13Speaker 3: of them was I should have maybe won. It was
- 16:16Speaker 3: against Celb at one point. I think it was like
- 16:18Speaker 3: nine three and ten four upon him at one point,
- 16:21Speaker 3: and he won the last three frames in the first
- 16:23Speaker 3: day's play. He make it ten seven and that got
- 16:26Speaker 3: within touching distance. Whereas if if you think back, you
- 16:29Speaker 3: think if he'd have won maybe one of the frames
- 16:31Speaker 3: just to keep a bigger gap and.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Then then he caught up. He was playing amazing at
- 16:37Speaker 2: the time.
- 16:37Speaker 3: You think he was world number one or something at
- 16:39Speaker 3: the time, but that would have been the one.
- 16:41Speaker 2: The other ones.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Probably say fair and square get beat Trump beat me.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Trump played the best thing MD's ever played in the final.
- 16:49Speaker 3: I would say he was incredibly beat me eighteen nine
- 16:53Speaker 3: or something.
- 16:54Speaker 2: He was brilliant.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Williams played him in a final and it was a
- 16:58Speaker 3: really good final. I was behind and I brought it back.
- 17:01Speaker 3: But you go over the line. He played great that
- 17:05Speaker 3: tour as well. And then I'm trying to think you
- 17:07Speaker 3: the other one. I've lost that many. I'm trying the
- 17:11Speaker 3: other one. So I've lost to I've lost to Williams
- 17:14Speaker 3: Trump Selby, and that's terrible.
- 17:21Speaker 2: I can't even remember a thing, honest, I'm not just
- 17:24Speaker 2: sitting here and you've been in that many finals. Don't
- 17:30Speaker 2: you better forgetting the.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Remember when you put it in that context with other guys,
- 17:37Speaker 1: other greats that are played in that many finals, it's
- 17:41Speaker 1: it's some achievement.
- 17:43Speaker 2: But you just always think before that you lost it.
- 17:46Speaker 3: You never It's Jackie said, I never think you how
- 17:49Speaker 3: the shots that when I won. I think you are
- 17:51Speaker 3: the ones that I mussed yeah when I lost. I
- 17:54Speaker 3: mean I always get back to the time when you
- 17:57Speaker 3: and Phil.
- 17:57Speaker 2: I'm just about to talk about that Williams one of
- 17:59Speaker 2: the you know, that's still the worst loss I've ever had.
- 18:03Speaker 3: It that right, I and the reason that I've said
- 18:06Speaker 3: that miney that was fourteen ten in front and in
- 18:09Speaker 3: that fin and he didn't shake my hand as he
- 18:11Speaker 3: went out to play right, and he still to this
- 18:14Speaker 3: day he says, he says like he didn't know why.
- 18:18Speaker 3: He just thought, which I probably, but I added my head,
- 18:24Speaker 3: I should have just gone over him and just says
- 18:25Speaker 3: I never shook hands, mate, I was just thinking before
- 18:27Speaker 3: the final was before just before his Now they say, right,
- 18:31Speaker 3: Matt Williams to break and he walked to the table.
- 18:34Speaker 3: It's a bit of a walk and he never shook hands.
- 18:37Speaker 3: And thing, I shoot my hand. You're thinking about the
- 18:40Speaker 3: things They just walked right over shook his hand in
- 18:42Speaker 3: the head and it's playing in your head. And then
- 18:45Speaker 3: I lost seventeen fifteen that night and I didn't see
- 18:48Speaker 3: news after it.
- 18:49Speaker 2: And then I that was just when you think because
- 18:53Speaker 2: I could I think that was like you could have
- 18:56Speaker 2: won it.
- 18:57Speaker 3: You never know, he'd got the taste of your back
- 19:00Speaker 3: where you were going to try and defend that, and
- 19:02Speaker 3: that's when you're when you're arriving here, maybe your But
- 19:05Speaker 3: I didn't win it again for night eight right up
- 19:07Speaker 3: to two thousand and seven.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Uh, huh.
- 19:09Speaker 3: So it's funny because my boy, my boy works with
- 19:13Speaker 3: Phil's boy, so he does I light and he had
- 19:17Speaker 3: he didn't know. He didn't know that. We had a
- 19:19Speaker 3: great night that night.
- 19:20Speaker 2: So I'm saying.
- 19:23Speaker 1: We're obviously Sheffield at the time it was Doogie do
- 19:25Speaker 1: only right was it the game right now? Dookie would
- 19:29Speaker 1: have been covering the sneaker. I think so whether they was,
- 19:32Speaker 1: he was covering the Sheffeld Wednesday game. I'll just come
- 19:34Speaker 1: to watch. And he's seen me in film, says He's
- 19:37Speaker 1: why I come to the snaker.
- 19:38Speaker 2: I'll be like, one hundred percent, we're coming. So I
- 19:41Speaker 2: think we were at two sessions.
- 19:42Speaker 1: That's where we met your family and friends, your brothers
- 19:45Speaker 1: and that. And I couldn't believe how quiet and how
- 19:49Speaker 1: small the crucible is.
- 19:51Speaker 2: What you're in there. You can hear yourself breathing. Well,
- 19:54Speaker 2: you're scared to move.
- 19:55Speaker 3: It's because you obviously grow up seeing it on the telly,
- 19:58Speaker 3: but to be there, it's it's unreal, unlike anything else
- 20:02Speaker 3: I'd imagine for you. And that's always say to people
- 20:06Speaker 3: like if right on top of you, if you do verny,
- 20:09Speaker 3: if you do like snooker, you've got to try to
- 20:12Speaker 3: go there once you've got to try to get there.
- 20:14Speaker 3: You actually watch it and experience it, and then it
- 20:17Speaker 3: makes it even better. It's just the one table set up,
- 20:20Speaker 3: because when there's two tables in the in the I mean,
- 20:24Speaker 3: it's still class. But when there's just one table there,
- 20:27Speaker 3: that's it's a special eye. So I Piers and it
- 20:32Speaker 3: was looking as I look. They played and I told
- 20:35Speaker 3: him the story. Brought a few drinks that night.
- 20:38Speaker 1: I remember the end of the night, it's me and
- 20:39Speaker 1: Phil standards about six in the Morman. I try to
- 20:42Speaker 1: get a taxi home, try to get a taxi back
- 20:44Speaker 1: after a night with you guys.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Mental mental, imagine if you'd won it. There's been a
- 20:50Speaker 2: few parties.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Now there has been a few, but.
- 20:54Speaker 2: But then its lifetime ago. Well it probably does.
- 20:57Speaker 3: But then you talk about the gap there, so that's
- 21:00Speaker 3: nine years to you want it again, the longevity there.
- 21:03Speaker 3: I mean you talk about yourself, Williams, Ronnie, who have
- 21:08Speaker 3: all come through at the same time.
- 21:09Speaker 1: A kind of clashes is you know when the tennis
- 21:11Speaker 1: boys with Jokovic and dal and that the.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Federal and Murdy kind of dominated the spot for U.
- 21:18Speaker 3: You's have went over that amount of time do you
- 21:20Speaker 3: think that will ever be done again?
- 21:24Speaker 2: I'm not listening, but we have done. You want to
- 21:27Speaker 2: twenty two? When you want to twenty two fifty one?
- 21:29Speaker 2: Now that remarkable. I it's lucky. It's no, it's no physical,
- 21:36Speaker 2: it's lucky.
- 21:38Speaker 3: So what is the challenges and you touched on the
- 21:39Speaker 3: other road, what is the gives a wee bit insight
- 21:42Speaker 3: into the practice.
- 21:45Speaker 2: When you're just as much now at all.
- 21:47Speaker 5: So when you've a younger motivation onerzation as well, and
- 21:50Speaker 5: but just concentration, concentration.
- 21:52Speaker 2: It's say, when you're younger, what are you doing younger
- 21:56Speaker 2: in the club?
- 21:56Speaker 3: All day you're ten them turn at night you'd be
- 22:02Speaker 3: playing matches, be going for lunch, you'd be coming back.
- 22:05Speaker 3: You'd be playing guys for like a pounder frame and
- 22:08Speaker 3: just and you didn't they know you were actually playing
- 22:10Speaker 3: because we're having great fund all your mates guys that
- 22:13Speaker 3: you are growing up with you having wee tournaments and
- 22:17Speaker 3: not saying it was a job, but it was just
- 22:20Speaker 3: used to have it.
- 22:20Speaker 2: At the football.
- 22:22Speaker 3: You were having drunk your mates, having the laugh of
- 22:24Speaker 3: the crack everything. But you were obviously getting better as
- 22:28Speaker 3: you were doing that. Whereas now I've got a table
- 22:30Speaker 3: at the house, but me and me and a couple
- 22:32Speaker 3: of boys Anthony McGill and Steve maguire. I've had this
- 22:35Speaker 3: unit now in Glasgow, just down for the foot, put
- 22:40Speaker 3: a table each other and try and play. But as
- 22:43Speaker 3: they are getting older as well, they feel as a
- 22:46Speaker 3: thunder one practice as much, so it's one everything and
- 22:51Speaker 3: I just I just think it just an hour or
- 22:55Speaker 3: two days more than enough and don't go wrong because
- 22:59Speaker 3: it just feel.
- 22:59Speaker 4: You're not going to get better. You're not going to
- 23:01Speaker 4: get better at that stage.
- 23:02Speaker 3: It's just and we're playing so many tournaments now so
- 23:05Speaker 3: that a lot of that is your practice as well,
- 23:08Speaker 3: so there's no need for you to be slogging your
- 23:10Speaker 3: guts five and six hours a day try to get
- 23:12Speaker 3: but I'm probably not. I'm not going to get any
- 23:14Speaker 3: better now. But you've you've learned to or the angles
- 23:19Speaker 3: to an extent with the table. It's just it's just
- 23:22Speaker 3: going to the eyes and struggling.
- 23:24Speaker 2: A bit.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Struggling and some of the boys, I've got to say,
- 23:31Speaker 3: I've been lucky that you've got about fifty one and
- 23:33Speaker 3: still but.
- 23:35Speaker 4: There is there is get a big Dennis Taylor's.
- 23:40Speaker 3: So I know they all say, like, once you start
- 23:43Speaker 3: using them, it's as if your eyes need the glasses sense.
- 23:46Speaker 3: And that's why I tried to stay away, Try to
- 23:48Speaker 3: stay away for as long as I can, and then
- 23:50Speaker 3: I don't really fancy that the laser treatment, because I
- 23:52Speaker 3: don't know how many more years, a couple of more years,
- 23:56Speaker 3: and then you think, Hi, guys, just a big shout
- 24:00Speaker 3: out to all our new members, thanks for joining up.
- 24:04Speaker 3: I hope you've enjoyed all your giveaways, all the little
- 24:06Speaker 3: bits of extra that we've done to join.
- 24:09Speaker 2: What do we need to do? Jackie?
- 24:10Speaker 4: The links and the description said.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Below Cheers seniors.
- 24:17Speaker 3: No, No, I could walk away and walk away and
- 24:19Speaker 3: just walk away. And just that's the way I feel.
- 24:23Speaker 3: I've done a little bit of commentating things this year
- 24:25Speaker 3: with Channel five.
- 24:26Speaker 2: They asked join them in.
- 24:28Speaker 3: No really, no really, because you're sitting in the green room.
- 24:33Speaker 3: I'm in the tournament, so it may be one one
- 24:36Speaker 3: day and then I'm in, and then you're sitting with
- 24:38Speaker 3: the boys. And now you've get Henry. He's slagging everybody off.
- 24:41Speaker 3: The certain shots so pointed, and I don't think I could.
- 24:47Speaker 3: I don't think I could. I quite like listen to
- 24:49Speaker 3: other mc man he's good, good, he explains it right.
- 24:53Speaker 3: But I'm saying that about Henry. A lot of people
- 24:55Speaker 3: like and Henry's more like you.
- 24:57Speaker 2: He tries to be like the Roy Kane, That's what
- 24:59Speaker 2: he tries to really, yeah, but.
- 25:01Speaker 3: He forgets it's a hard game.
- 25:04Speaker 2: I mean, so where do you see yourself? Remember the
- 25:07Speaker 2: snooker once you hang the qu up coaching, and then I.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Just, honestly, I'm just that Tafe. I don't know, I
- 25:15Speaker 3: really don't. I've never had a plan. I've never I've
- 25:18Speaker 3: never said I want to do this, I want to
- 25:20Speaker 3: do that. I've just see how it goes.
- 25:23Speaker 5: And then I could you think you're that kind of
- 25:26Speaker 5: personality because it was just a couple of years ago
- 25:28Speaker 5: you were playing golf and all you just chucked out?
- 25:30Speaker 2: Did you have no play?
- 25:31Speaker 4: I played you play well or something?
- 25:33Speaker 2: And about Jones the point, I'm just what is the
- 25:36Speaker 2: point of playing golfing?
- 25:37Speaker 3: The last time I seen you as it was was
- 25:40Speaker 3: the Tommy Gem for.
- 25:42Speaker 1: The statue statue and last year that was torture. And
- 25:45Speaker 1: then I tried, I tried to get you for something
- 25:47Speaker 1: because I.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Gave up, gave it up. I don't know how sound
- 25:55Speaker 3: I'm actually I'm all right, but I've not been a
- 25:58Speaker 3: down because it is so I shouldn't be. You could
- 26:00Speaker 3: say I have just won the league, just won the first
- 26:03Speaker 3: gave the World Cup in many years. But I was
- 26:07Speaker 3: actually watching you using the World Cup diaries how young
- 26:10Speaker 3: you look? Because it comes on whatever you've been watching
- 26:13Speaker 3: on YouTube, sort of thing that must come up Scotland,
- 26:16Speaker 3: and then it was showing you that.
- 26:18Speaker 2: And I was watching you. Believe. I know you know
- 26:21Speaker 2: you look young, Jackie, but you look really young.
- 26:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I think is now that's not deemed as young.
- 26:29Speaker 2: I was twenty three, then.
- 26:30Speaker 4: You come up twenty four. I was twenty four, come
- 26:32Speaker 4: up to.
- 26:32Speaker 2: I was the youngest in the squad.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Here was second, and I think then there was a
- 26:35Speaker 1: gap there. I was actually thinking about the other day
- 26:37Speaker 1: because you're looking at it, you're looking at the squads
- 26:40Speaker 1: in this tournament, and I was like, I think there
- 26:41Speaker 1: was an eighteen year old came after the bench for me.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Ben's what nineteen and twenty? Yeah, there's an eighteen ye
- 26:48Speaker 2: believe he's nineteen.
- 26:52Speaker 5: And then you've got Fletcher's boy nineteen as well, he's nineteen.
- 26:57Speaker 3: What did you think of that we haven't given in
- 26:59Speaker 3: with just thought that might be meant Lennon Lennon Miller.
- 27:03Speaker 4: I can, but you soon no, I could see both say.
- 27:07Speaker 5: I think if Lenham was playing week in week out
- 27:10Speaker 5: right and in that week it because he looked at
- 27:15Speaker 5: from the outside of going he's only played seventeen minutes
- 27:17Speaker 5: and men's football, but he is at man us like
- 27:21Speaker 5: his dad that he's like, he's like Darren Darren came
- 27:24Speaker 5: on and seeing young with Scotland, Dan Man you very
- 27:28Speaker 5: good player. But again if you're trying Entice's brother the
- 27:32Speaker 5: coming to play as well, when you see you know
- 27:35Speaker 5: he's maybe I think it's shown a bit of faith
- 27:41Speaker 5: him because it is a kind of agent squad.
- 27:44Speaker 4: You know, the squad is getting older.
- 27:46Speaker 5: When you said we were deemed as youngsters at twenty
- 27:50Speaker 5: three and twenty four year old was now that's an
- 27:53Speaker 5: experienced player, you know, so great a great an opportunity
- 27:57Speaker 5: for the kid coming in there.
- 27:59Speaker 1: He's obviously come in to fill the numbers up, but
- 28:02Speaker 1: maybe take part when guys are injured, and he's obviously
- 28:05Speaker 1: done well.
- 28:05Speaker 2: It's done well to get his chance. But I can
- 28:07Speaker 2: also see it.
- 28:09Speaker 1: For Lennon Miller's point of view and another boys who
- 28:11Speaker 1: have been round about it, and you know you're waiting
- 28:13Speaker 1: for your chancellor, so you can see both sides up.
- 28:17Speaker 1: But I think it's a great chance for the whether
- 28:18Speaker 1: he gets on the pitch and actually plays any match
- 28:20Speaker 1: for another question.
- 28:21Speaker 2: But Big Mass Billy Gilmurdy just the guy that.
- 28:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I think in certain games, I don't think like
- 28:27Speaker 5: the first game he's went four four to two, you know,
- 28:30Speaker 5: I don't think either I played him in that one.
- 28:33Speaker 4: I think the second game, I.
- 28:35Speaker 5: Think you'll go more defensive because Morocco I think will
- 28:39Speaker 5: be the best. I think they're the best in the
- 28:42Speaker 5: group between them in Brazil, but they will dominate the
- 28:45Speaker 5: ball more, whereas if you're kind of open, they'll fred
- 28:49Speaker 5: wright for you, you know, and get turned on the
- 28:51Speaker 5: half turned. So I think I think you'll go back
- 28:55Speaker 5: and change your shape to a fourth at or a
- 28:57Speaker 5: four to two c one which Gilmore maybe we started,
- 29:00Speaker 5: and that.
- 29:01Speaker 4: With the two in front of him.
- 29:04Speaker 5: I think you'll try and stay in the game, then
- 29:07Speaker 5: maybe go for it later on in the game because
- 29:08Speaker 5: he will know it'd be too open like he was
- 29:10Speaker 5: against it.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Looks amazing, but then to my brothers just back that.
- 29:15Speaker 2: He just says it was.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Just they go Boston, looked amazing Flower Scotland at the
- 29:21Speaker 1: hated game, just said emotional stuff.
- 29:25Speaker 2: And then they took over the baseball. Was there that
- 29:28Speaker 2: was at the base I speaking to some day.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I was doing the radio last night, I was speaking
- 29:32Speaker 1: something they actually that was organized within groups of the
- 29:36Speaker 1: Tartan Army was but they took over the baseball as well.
- 29:40Speaker 1: I just think I'm in social media the good thing
- 29:42Speaker 1: as well with the two games. So they obviously just
- 29:45Speaker 1: dropped tanker. It's not as if they have to go
- 29:47Speaker 1: for Boston to someone else. Did you never think about
- 29:51Speaker 1: your brother?
- 29:51Speaker 2: My daughter she was eighteen then Saturday night there she
- 29:56Speaker 2: no fancy that the whole house, know what I mean?
- 29:59Speaker 2: People now, so.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Sorry, But if they get to the knockouts, would you consider.
- 30:05Speaker 2: That would be that would be special when they use out.
- 30:08Speaker 1: No, it would be we've got some different We've got
- 30:12Speaker 1: stuff on it, some work something.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Although if we get to the knockouts, never know, I
- 30:18Speaker 3: could be Mexico. They're saying that looks some stadium dinner
- 30:23Speaker 3: that did look Aboutay and that stadium two finals in
- 30:26Speaker 3: that stadium.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I thought the final would have been there. But it's
- 30:29Speaker 2: new Jerseys, America obviously amazing. Just what the boys can do.
- 30:35Speaker 2: I hope they can get through. I mean use use
- 30:38Speaker 2: my clothes. I mean it was different back then because
- 30:41Speaker 2: I was at I was at Paris.
- 30:42Speaker 3: But but back then used we used to get then
- 30:47Speaker 3: every tournament. It wasn't like as now I was sitting.
- 30:51Speaker 3: I was sitting in the pub no long after winning
- 30:52Speaker 3: the first title, and see the boys were saying you fancy,
- 30:55Speaker 3: and we just says, I just jumped the train, may
- 30:58Speaker 3: get down. And one of the boys sister at the
- 31:02Speaker 3: house in Paris. We just think we just bunked here
- 31:06Speaker 3: now for a couple of nights and a time. Man
- 31:09Speaker 3: just wedn't didn't get tickets right, We were in a fountain,
- 31:13Speaker 3: other Brazilians now watching me, gaving the big screams. But
- 31:17Speaker 3: I always thought the Brazilians were going to be dead
- 31:19Speaker 3: friendly as well. But they were day are tall.
- 31:21Speaker 4: No.
- 31:21Speaker 3: But then somebody did mention it says, but you when
- 31:24Speaker 3: they get any like poor Brazilians going to Paris, it
- 31:27Speaker 3: would be all your yeah, your rich Brazilian say probably
- 31:30Speaker 3: hints this week.
- 31:33Speaker 2: So it was it was like.
- 31:34Speaker 3: It was a silly opened being there. But then you
- 31:37Speaker 3: think twenty eight years. If somebody would have said twenty eight.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Years, you'd never have guessed that, would you have a
- 31:43Speaker 1: because never with ninety four, I think we just took
- 31:47Speaker 1: it for granted.
- 31:47Speaker 2: But we're always going to be for twenty years, and
- 31:51Speaker 2: I think that's where you'll get. You'll get. You get
- 31:53Speaker 2: all the young team who have never experienced a wall
- 31:56Speaker 2: cut from and we.
- 31:56Speaker 3: Also get guys at her age are like, I'm missing
- 31:59Speaker 3: this because it's been so long since we've been there.
- 32:03Speaker 5: But it seems have been so hard to qualify though
- 32:05Speaker 5: after that, you know, like some of the ones that
- 32:07Speaker 5: you're getting close, you know you've drawn Italy and Italy
- 32:14Speaker 5: wanted to win it. Peerlo scored two three kicks San zero,
- 32:18Speaker 5: so he's like, you know, it was always difficult. We
- 32:21Speaker 5: get the playoffs with Holland and all. He took them
- 32:24Speaker 5: to the playoffs, England the playoffs. It was so hard
- 32:28Speaker 5: to qualify after that, of course, but I had I
- 32:33Speaker 5: mean that was our first one, ninety eight.
- 32:35Speaker 4: I always thought we.
- 32:36Speaker 5: Would have more, you know, even at my age at
- 32:39Speaker 5: that time, I thought, right, Japan and its need.
- 32:43Speaker 2: To be m hmm. See Tony Blair. Talk to them.
- 32:47Speaker 2: I want say my boys have watched that in the
- 32:51Speaker 2: vast They say, I.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Remember, but I gave my bass stick probably but there
- 32:57Speaker 1: was something to say.
- 32:59Speaker 2: But it was serial times. What was the one we Rod? Remember?
- 33:02Speaker 5: Rod gets script in Tell we were going to the
- 33:05Speaker 5: game and we were going out the State hotel, the Bordle.
- 33:09Speaker 5: There was a Norway game before we were leaving to
- 33:12Speaker 5: go to the game. He's getting carried Don.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Who legs.
- 33:18Speaker 4: Carried in the hotel?
- 33:20Speaker 2: Tell him he's the game, No way he made I
- 33:26Speaker 2: don't actually see it was. It was there the other
- 33:28Speaker 2: night when I apparently canceled the gig. I see they
- 33:35Speaker 2: get a bit of stick for he could do what
- 33:37Speaker 2: I suppose that.
- 33:38Speaker 5: Age kid you but get he gets carried down at
- 33:41Speaker 5: the hotel and we were going out to the game.
- 33:43Speaker 2: I don't mind. And but that been the first time
- 33:45Speaker 2: used that produs I met him before. I don't think
- 33:47Speaker 2: I think did they did they?
- 33:50Speaker 3: One of the stands Billy commonly dud they got his seat. Still, Rod,
- 33:55Speaker 3: You're still going to the game and he's getting script
- 33:58Speaker 3: along the reception before again for a bulls kicked Well.
- 34:02Speaker 2: That was that was the time in ninety eight when
- 34:04Speaker 2: me and my wee brother had seats in the north stand.
- 34:07Speaker 3: But when they've invited mint to the main stand, you
- 34:10Speaker 3: can take a guess I've took my wee brother. So
- 34:13Speaker 3: my dad and molder brother is over in the north
- 34:16Speaker 3: stand and we're standing there like I'm twenty two movie bro,
- 34:20Speaker 3: I was eighteen. My standing there, I know, and look
- 34:22Speaker 3: at anybody and who's come walking up to his Billy Corny.
- 34:25Speaker 3: I don't know if he knows who I am, if
- 34:27Speaker 3: you Adam right, but somebody's maybe said to or he
- 34:29Speaker 3: could have very well.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Been on this game, this is against Johnson game. He's
- 34:34Speaker 2: walked you up. He's like wy man.
- 34:36Speaker 3: He says, I watched every minute of the final. He says,
- 34:38Speaker 3: I'm over here doing a film and someday and then
- 34:41Speaker 3: and then, like he says, somebody says, you're a good
- 34:43Speaker 3: Celtic man. I loved watching you and fantastic and I'm
- 34:47Speaker 3: standing at Billy corn Yeah. I just couldn't believe me
- 34:50Speaker 3: and wee but I still talking about that to this day.
- 34:53Speaker 3: He was in a huddle where I wasn't he the
- 34:56Speaker 3: Jockstein stand he opened, I'm sure.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Have in a huddle.
- 35:00Speaker 1: We played either Liverpool or Newcastle, no mind, but he
- 35:06Speaker 1: came in and did the huddles.
- 35:09Speaker 2: See it's another lifetime.
- 35:10Speaker 3: And well it's Saint saying as well, look Hinky playing
- 35:15Speaker 3: in Glasgow and different things.
- 35:17Speaker 2: I was doing it. I turn A couple of years
- 35:19Speaker 2: after like that.
- 35:20Speaker 3: It was the Scotland were playing in the Team Team
- 35:23Speaker 3: Championship meet Stephen and Allen and Paul Doublish was playing
- 35:28Speaker 3: the Newcastle the.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Time, So I thank Stephen U Kenny Doublish.
- 35:32Speaker 3: Sir Paul came out for a night at shay Givansire,
- 35:36Speaker 3: she gave me, came up for a big ninety and
- 35:39Speaker 3: he says, he said, I'll never forget it. Says he
- 35:41Speaker 3: was at Celtic with me, were you and and he
- 35:45Speaker 3: was only what about fourteen or fifteen older.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Pretty bit older and I sixteen seventeen or something.
- 35:49Speaker 3: And he lived somewhere in Glasgow and he used to
- 35:52Speaker 3: get into the Masters and play right snooker right And
- 35:54Speaker 3: he says he was standing behind the screen a couple
- 35:57Speaker 3: of times and he's seen me play and he's lap
- 36:00Speaker 3: to Somebody's like, who's that wee guy, and and somebody says, oh,
- 36:03Speaker 3: he's John Higgins or something. He's got to maybe do
- 36:06Speaker 3: well or something. And he says, always kept that in
- 36:08Speaker 3: my head. Yeah, and then he says he's.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Seen me then obviously play so he lovely fella.
- 36:13Speaker 3: He was in the team of me, but it was
- 36:15Speaker 3: it was between him and Kelso, So you obviously know
- 36:18Speaker 3: stood very well and at the time for me, Kes
- 36:23Speaker 3: was a better goalkeeper. Obviously she doesn't want to have
- 36:25Speaker 3: a great career down south, but it was another one
- 36:27Speaker 3: I think she.
- 36:29Speaker 1: I think the boy Brad Threedo was itself. He was
- 36:32Speaker 1: there briefly as well, but she at the time. I've
- 36:36Speaker 1: just said Kelso was the better, a short stopper. Maybe
- 36:40Speaker 1: the Kelso struggled with the body feet a wee bit.
- 36:43Speaker 1: The pass back rule came in run a bit then
- 36:45Speaker 1: as well. But it's another keeper.
- 36:47Speaker 3: That just shows you a bit down how close moments
- 36:51Speaker 3: and then they get better at different times of their
- 36:54Speaker 3: career and different things, and that you just right place
- 36:56Speaker 3: at the right time as well, and.
- 36:58Speaker 4: It kills would by the problems we back as well.
- 37:00Speaker 4: Membery's back used to go and as he went and
- 37:09Speaker 4: he did.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Oh mother, is he still in the States. He's still coaching.
- 37:18Speaker 2: So yourself obviously a big SELIC fan.
- 37:20Speaker 3: Who's who's the players that have kind of over the years,
- 37:23Speaker 3: who were your favorite?
- 37:24Speaker 2: Well, I always tell a story as well.
- 37:28Speaker 3: First one of the first games European games I was
- 37:31Speaker 3: ever that was a part of Amn Belgrade game.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Jack and jacking off scored four, didn't he?
- 37:37Speaker 3: And that was one of the first time I mean
- 37:38Speaker 3: that I was allowed to go to the game with
- 37:40Speaker 3: older bra in the jungle.
- 37:41Speaker 2: What an atmosphere that was.
- 37:43Speaker 3: And then when you fast forward all the years I
- 37:45Speaker 3: got to playing one of the charity games Tommy Lloyd
- 37:50Speaker 3: and Jack and Offski was coming off the pitch as
- 37:53Speaker 3: I was going on.
- 37:54Speaker 2: He wasn't he wasn't he what?
- 37:55Speaker 3: He come off the pitch bank Big Martin be courses
- 37:57Speaker 3: like Jackie let him own for five minutes. And surreal
- 38:01Speaker 3: moment when you think standing in that jungle all the
- 38:04Speaker 3: years ago watching you, He's coming off and I was
- 38:07Speaker 3: replacing play on that path after I remember that after
- 38:12Speaker 3: they just won the Invincible travel that.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Was that was the son? Was that the only time
- 38:18Speaker 2: you played in one of those games? Did you get?
- 38:20Speaker 2: You know? That was the only time I played there?
- 38:22Speaker 3: Another time as well, but it was like a different
- 38:25Speaker 3: charity thing be Irish players and different things weekend dockery.
- 38:31Speaker 2: But that was the only ten I've I've done it.
- 38:33Speaker 2: That was well, that was full Jackie.
- 38:36Speaker 3: You no, you were you were and I remember you
- 38:41Speaker 3: coming on and you were on my team.
- 38:43Speaker 2: You were blown after a couple minute. I mean because big,
- 38:47Speaker 2: the big pick Big.
- 38:48Speaker 3: What we course sasty is I was blown after the
- 38:50Speaker 3: war for war, I'll get this, but he says.
- 38:55Speaker 2: What half do you want to play?
- 38:57Speaker 3: Just took me on for five minutes and that'll make
- 38:59Speaker 3: my my life. Don't don't worry about but I just
- 39:03Speaker 3: five minutes will do me. Who was here kind of
- 39:05Speaker 3: talk man name jack And at the time that was
- 39:07Speaker 3: the first you pauls day. He was a man when
- 39:14Speaker 3: he for the youngsters growing up like probably like yourselves
- 39:18Speaker 3: as well.
- 39:21Speaker 2: He was and then obviously but I've just always loved this.
- 39:24Speaker 3: It's the Scottish boys, just always loved like yourselves and
- 39:28Speaker 3: Caney McGregor James for.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Brilliant, yeah, brilliant more. I've been one of the guys that.
- 39:35Speaker 3: I've never really took to any loans signs coming in.
- 39:39Speaker 3: You see your hobby Keans and your Royal Keans and.
- 39:41Speaker 2: That as as I'm just saying that I played be Celtic.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Now it's it's guys that signing the dotted line for
- 39:48Speaker 2: the club. Now, that's that's the guy.
- 39:49Speaker 4: I think it's has hard to like loans in it.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Let's become permanent.
- 39:54Speaker 5: But you know, you just you just feel like they're
- 39:57Speaker 5: there for getting games at minutes or no point at
- 40:01Speaker 5: our club. But it's no worked out, no a lover.
- 40:06Speaker 5: Obviously we used loans a couple of times in management,
- 40:08Speaker 5: but in terms of like your club, I don't think.
- 40:11Speaker 3: They're greeny give the same you give the same passion
- 40:17Speaker 3: in that. I know, I know they probably do him
- 40:19Speaker 3: in and but.
- 40:21Speaker 2: It's not for me.
- 40:22Speaker 3: But by mixed day, mixed day, he was a class,
- 40:27Speaker 3: touch a class next day. I love Big something he's
- 40:30Speaker 3: seeing that Martins and I loved him. Now everything is
- 40:33Speaker 3: on a laughs and I just love Big certain of
- 40:35Speaker 3: Fair used to tell the stories some day just to
- 40:37Speaker 3: wind up merch.
- 40:38Speaker 2: He was good.
- 40:39Speaker 5: I mean you you never played with them, but I
- 40:42Speaker 5: think a lot of it was awkward. See like some
- 40:45Speaker 5: of my pal or ex teammates, they wouldn't know how
- 40:48Speaker 5: to take them.
- 40:50Speaker 4: You know when you're going out there so much. Your
- 40:52Speaker 4: other ones there had said is like you find him
- 40:56Speaker 4: rude or find them hair.
- 40:58Speaker 5: But he's shy, right really, although you wouldn't think it,
- 41:02Speaker 5: you know, in the dressing room or that, or you
- 41:03Speaker 5: see him when they telly it's there, but certainly bit
- 41:06Speaker 5: saying he was start if you were going out in
- 41:07Speaker 5: the night or something, he'd be standing at the fruit machine,
- 41:11Speaker 5: staring at it.
- 41:12Speaker 4: Don't speak to.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Anybody, just you know, just weird. It was.
- 41:17Speaker 5: But the other ones who got to him, and he
- 41:19Speaker 5: was shy totally what you wouldn't think. Remember the first
- 41:25Speaker 5: time I meet his wife Sam and she's like, my
- 41:28Speaker 5: kiss is shy, and that another guy slotting everybody in
- 41:32Speaker 5: the changing room. And but so you would then look
- 41:34Speaker 5: at him right, you know what I mean, he's just
- 41:36Speaker 5: but he's clever, very very clever guy.
- 41:39Speaker 4: But I wouldn't player great foil for Henrick, the two
- 41:43Speaker 4: of them.
- 41:43Speaker 5: Yeah, he puts I put in the back Eyebrooks midfield,
- 41:48Speaker 5: the ten John and Henrick.
- 41:51Speaker 4: But very clever guy, a very good footballer.
- 41:57Speaker 3: Well, I was nearly every every he gave me that
- 42:01Speaker 3: savill run I was in the stud gap.
- 42:04Speaker 2: It's a black bum nearly get trampled over there. I
- 42:08Speaker 2: fell people over there. Now there was fat too many
- 42:12Speaker 2: behind the goal, too many. I was actually standing up
- 42:14Speaker 2: the back.
- 42:15Speaker 1: You've got his tickets, so me fill and I think
- 42:18Speaker 1: they brought a couple of Irish boys for Cheffy Wednesday.
- 42:20Speaker 1: But we're standing right at the back of the behind
- 42:23Speaker 1: that goal because there was no seats.
- 42:25Speaker 3: They were just that was a good night. And then Liverpool, Liverpool.
- 42:29Speaker 3: I was right behind.
- 42:30Speaker 2: It was if there was name Harpson's gold right in
- 42:34Speaker 2: the face.
- 42:35Speaker 5: Now, if there was behind that behind behind the shot,
- 42:38Speaker 5: I was just two side him shouting they passed.
- 42:40Speaker 4: I'm glad.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Then savill God, that was.
- 42:50Speaker 3: That's one story as well, coming out of that, because
- 42:52Speaker 3: you're with a few berries and different things. But you
- 42:55Speaker 3: came out and there's so many bussies that used probably
- 42:57Speaker 3: when they know because he's a go and whatever, and
- 43:00Speaker 3: I've lost my dar and I'm like my brother and
- 43:02Speaker 3: I'm thinking I'm not getting back to ares here because
- 43:05Speaker 3: when they got on the bus to get back to
- 43:09Speaker 3: tours or something, and I was walking about for like
- 43:11Speaker 3: ten minutes, they lost all being and managed to run
- 43:14Speaker 3: into them and there what a trip it was.
- 43:19Speaker 4: It's good, that's your flight and audit.
- 43:22Speaker 1: I wast chaos at the airport. Everybody thinks I was steaming,
- 43:25Speaker 1: but it wasn't the case.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Bit. You need another podcast for that story. It was
- 43:30Speaker 2: just mad.
- 43:31Speaker 1: I think they were just trying to get all Celtic
- 43:33Speaker 1: fans out as quick as possible.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Or were you were you flying out that night?
- 43:36Speaker 1: I right for the Yeah, I get the bus, one
- 43:39Speaker 1: of the buses back. Somebody got on the bus to
- 43:41Speaker 1: the airport and your brother. Everybody was in the airport
- 43:44Speaker 1: and the flights were slowly but surely disappearing, and then
- 43:47Speaker 1: mine just went off the screen and I went to
- 43:49Speaker 1: the desk and she says, no, you must it. So
- 43:51Speaker 1: I had to get back into Seville and luckily meet
- 43:54Speaker 1: boys that were already there and get a flight home
- 43:55Speaker 1: by East Midlands later on the week. But I think
- 43:58Speaker 1: they were just, honestly, Shepherd, he was I just.
- 44:06Speaker 3: Come up and get on the team bus team fly
- 44:10Speaker 3: back home, getting scraped off the back.
- 44:12Speaker 5: Yet everybody was on that flight, Billy Corney and or Roger.
- 44:18Speaker 5: I mean, I can imagine after the Ball of Easter game,
- 44:22Speaker 5: or the fans waiting at the airport like it and
- 44:27Speaker 5: over there then when we got to Glasgow, I can
- 44:29Speaker 5: imagine what it would been like if we'd want it.
- 44:31Speaker 4: Oh, you know, just it was a sore when I do.
- 44:35Speaker 5: I do think if the game I've normally watched it back,
- 44:39Speaker 5: if you never watched it back, just when the tunneling
- 44:42Speaker 5: point is big Boat getting sent out, he stays in
- 44:44Speaker 5: his feet. I think we win that, you know, I
- 44:47Speaker 5: think we descendancy at that point. That kind of another fight.
- 44:52Speaker 5: Them have deco and stuff, and then that just changed
- 44:55Speaker 5: the whole thing and changed it back into the defense
- 44:59Speaker 5: and just getting extra hand.
- 45:01Speaker 2: And they were a very good team. But just.
- 45:10Speaker 5: How they acted, I mean, because they were a good side,
- 45:13Speaker 5: didn't need to do the things they did. But that
- 45:16Speaker 5: was the way when you know, had these players, there
- 45:19Speaker 5: was always that seize mentality or rolling about and screaming.
- 45:25Speaker 5: I mean in your profession, if you had any the
- 45:28Speaker 5: ones you want to actually go fighting.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Handshake because a wee bit searing. It's different.
- 45:36Speaker 5: I suppose difference physical, but certain games there were come in.
- 45:40Speaker 5: I've involved in quite a few fights and tunnels and after.
- 45:44Speaker 2: It, if you never didn't like yourself.
- 45:46Speaker 3: Goes nah, you did find it like when you were
- 45:54Speaker 3: younger killing and kiming on to play with some of
- 45:56Speaker 3: the older guys like you're Dennis Taylors and things that
- 45:59Speaker 3: you'd never believed it. But when I'm maybe missing a
- 46:01Speaker 3: shot and I want passion and your lucky.
- 46:08Speaker 2: I just would never inspect.
- 46:10Speaker 5: I'm like, it's so lucky just to mess with you
- 46:16Speaker 5: putting either because you may be for the older school
- 46:19Speaker 5: and seeing these young guys coming in, I'll go over
- 46:25Speaker 5: that and cross the pockets.
- 46:28Speaker 3: Something that you never believed it. But then me for
- 46:34Speaker 3: the younger boys, just let them playing, Just focus yourself.
- 46:39Speaker 3: I mean that that is a bit like obviously it
- 46:41Speaker 3: was well documented that the Chris Wold like a Sullivan
- 46:44Speaker 3: news is like a different chalk.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Further, he's talking about that eye.
- 46:47Speaker 3: It's brutal, but I think he does it to put
- 46:52Speaker 3: off when they need to, but just a little wee
- 46:55Speaker 3: thing and because he knows it just messes our heads
- 46:58Speaker 3: because we always he's.
- 47:00Speaker 2: The only guy he uses.
- 47:01Speaker 3: That's the only guy I seen he's all talking about that.
- 47:05Speaker 3: It's a nightmare because you're rubbing for kicks and kicks
- 47:10Speaker 3: again again, very last shot, Like I potted a red
- 47:13Speaker 3: and I'm just rolling through for the black. I remember,
- 47:15Speaker 3: I've got a massive kick, and I have shouted.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Oh my god, your heads get into the jab jack.
- 47:23Speaker 3: But I think he does it because he's got the
- 47:25Speaker 3: best he's got, He's got the best cubeball out so
- 47:30Speaker 3: he can override all these little kicks. So it's as
- 47:33Speaker 3: if he's like, I'll just use with us, try this,
- 47:37Speaker 3: whereas I can deal with my own sort of thing.
- 47:40Speaker 3: It might not be Listen, I've never sat down and
- 47:42Speaker 3: asked him a question of why.
- 47:43Speaker 2: Well, I think we have.
- 47:44Speaker 3: Sometimes, but he just thinks. He just thinks with that chalk,
- 47:48Speaker 3: he gets more gan upon the cuball. That's that's what
- 47:50Speaker 3: he says. He says, I've tried all the chop user using.
- 47:53Speaker 3: He says, he says, I feel as if imished cubore.
- 47:56Speaker 2: So that's what he says.
- 47:57Speaker 4: But a little bit of heckles. Then he had a
- 48:01Speaker 4: few eyes. I don't know if he's had his name for.
- 48:04Speaker 2: York for York York City support Trigger.
- 48:08Speaker 5: His nickname was Trigger, but he used to maybe we
- 48:10Speaker 5: were doing at York City the first game came in
- 48:14Speaker 5: after it and he's in my office and we get beat.
- 48:18Speaker 4: He's like, to him, where where's gaffer? He came in,
- 48:22Speaker 4: he went, that was fucking ship the.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Day in office a mad snooker fans.
- 48:31Speaker 5: But I'd heard a story that he was used to
- 48:33Speaker 5: play in the York one the barbicane barbicane in Ken
- 48:38Speaker 5: Dockerty and it was you had he had the like
- 48:41Speaker 5: snooker jumper on and Ken Dockerty.
- 48:45Speaker 2: You probably know this guy.
- 48:48Speaker 4: Ken missed a pot and he's went, that was fucking ship.
- 48:54Speaker 4: Was long to tell you it didn't he surprise me.
- 48:57Speaker 5: I could used to hear him like during the games,
- 49:00Speaker 5: just shouting at but he used to come in off
- 49:03Speaker 5: what did you say a half time or.
- 49:07Speaker 4: Obviously it's not like security, but it was well known.
- 49:12Speaker 2: And the bit and what was his name? Can you
- 49:14Speaker 2: remember his name?
- 49:15Speaker 4: He worked in the Nestleigh chocolate place. You know that
- 49:19Speaker 4: the cross for the stage.
- 49:21Speaker 2: He gets scorted. I will love a few I played
- 49:25Speaker 2: a Sullivan a few times in Wembley and he was
- 49:31Speaker 2: he beat me.
- 49:32Speaker 3: I think I played them three finals in a row
- 49:35Speaker 3: at one point there and he beat me twice really
- 49:38Speaker 3: really easy. And it was like do the sweaty now,
- 49:41Speaker 3: do the sweaty sweat like there's a hagis.
- 49:45Speaker 2: And because you just set lines there. I just sat
- 49:50Speaker 2: there and getting pumped and just.
- 49:54Speaker 3: But when you go to different places like China now
- 49:57Speaker 3: that they're obviously they want now their own players to
- 50:01Speaker 3: win one of the things, and mobile phones are going
- 50:03Speaker 3: off at different times to switch over.
- 50:05Speaker 4: I'd find that hard. You know.
- 50:07Speaker 2: It's a different, different environment and mine.
- 50:12Speaker 5: When twenty Wolves when playing at Looting and it was
- 50:17Speaker 5: not long after I went down there and the ball
- 50:19Speaker 5: went out down there.
- 50:21Speaker 2: It's a mentally stadium. I have seen that as seen bits.
- 50:26Speaker 5: But there's the crowd there and the balls went out
- 50:30Speaker 5: and somebody's getting treatment and I went to get the
- 50:33Speaker 5: ball and I heard the Scottish voice and the looking
- 50:37Speaker 5: crew crowd and the guy took his jacket off and
- 50:40Speaker 5: the Rangers jacket on him.
- 50:42Speaker 4: Jackie, we are the people. But I just actually just
- 50:47Speaker 4: bursted laughing.
- 50:48Speaker 2: Well done.
- 50:50Speaker 5: But he's probably always it came to the game just
- 50:52Speaker 5: to do that, and the timing of it, because it
- 50:55Speaker 5: was total silence.
- 50:57Speaker 2: All the people are a bit like the sky told
- 50:59Speaker 2: me to be.
- 51:00Speaker 4: Other people very good, that's mental.
- 51:07Speaker 2: You've been a great guest. Hope Trophy once more. A
- 51:13Speaker 2: couple of years in you.
- 51:14Speaker 4: No I don't put any pressure, but we finished.
- 51:18Speaker 1: We usually finished our episodes with a recommendation from a
- 51:21Speaker 1: previous guest, who was Tom Kitchen. I don't know if
- 51:23Speaker 1: you have did the Chef. Yeah, yeah, beautiful, So his recommendations.
- 51:29Speaker 1: It's a film, a song and an album. He never
- 51:32Speaker 1: went for a film. It was a series Last Drop,
- 51:35Speaker 1: which I think is about wine, which I'm going to
- 51:38Speaker 1: watch myself. It's on Netflix, a series. His song was
- 51:42Speaker 1: from Jimie Webster Weekend in Paradise. He's a big Liverpool fan.
- 51:46Speaker 1: I don't know if you're familiar with this, and the
- 51:48Speaker 1: album was from Jimmie Webster as well. So could you
- 51:50Speaker 1: give us for our next guest a film, a song
- 51:54Speaker 1: and an album. And by the way, did you come
- 51:56Speaker 1: on to I Am That at the World Change a song?
- 52:02Speaker 3: I remember seeing you at the before the store noses.
- 52:05Speaker 3: I don't even remember. We were at Hampden. We're in
- 52:08Speaker 3: We're in your your pal shop, we were in course,
- 52:12Speaker 3: we were in there before it. I'd say that's my
- 52:15Speaker 3: favorite song because the story behind that is my older
- 52:18Speaker 3: brother when he was about sixteen a DJ. My wee
- 52:21Speaker 3: brother's a DJ ay he's a DJ's and they more
- 52:24Speaker 3: looked the soul and different things. My younger molder brother,
- 52:27Speaker 3: he went down with all his mates to the Hassi
- 52:29Speaker 3: Ender he was sixteen seventeen and the store Noses I
- 52:33Speaker 3: think they were playing and there, so you got a cassette,
- 52:38Speaker 3: brought it back up of Road that was a first
- 52:40Speaker 3: album or whatever brought up Road. So I'm must be
- 52:43Speaker 3: about twelve, and now three are shared the room and
- 52:47Speaker 3: he's goort like the wee CD player, and he came in.
- 52:51Speaker 3: He started getting out of the weekends and every every
- 52:53Speaker 3: night he just put it on and play it. But
- 52:56Speaker 3: you laugh, fucking need to get to sleep, and you
- 52:58Speaker 3: try to go up press stops. So I just grew
- 53:03Speaker 3: up in my head like every song.
- 53:07Speaker 2: And then and brilliant. So I would say, now we
- 53:12Speaker 2: need an album and a film.
- 53:14Speaker 4: You know.
- 53:15Speaker 3: One of the best gigs I've ever been here was
- 53:17Speaker 3: a Proclaim US over and over in Amsterdam.
- 53:22Speaker 2: It was in the Paradiso like a music hall.
- 53:26Speaker 3: Me and the misses were were going over there for
- 53:29Speaker 3: a weekend and found out they were playing. Just be
- 53:32Speaker 3: luck and managed to get a couple of tickets and
- 53:34Speaker 3: managed to meet the guys after it. And it's a
- 53:37Speaker 3: place where they say the Rolling Stones go see if
- 53:39Speaker 3: they've got the new songs to try. This is the
- 53:42Speaker 3: they go in Amsterdam and it was incredible, It really was.
- 53:48Speaker 3: It was incredible. So I'd say best the Proclaimers or
- 53:52Speaker 3: their songs. And a film I watched it the Ard Area,
- 53:58Speaker 3: The Warriors, remember.
- 54:00Speaker 2: That playing to play.
- 54:04Speaker 3: The Warriors getting the train back to Corny and just
- 54:08Speaker 3: it's one of them you grow up and that was
- 54:11Speaker 3: when I.
- 54:17Speaker 2: That's that's what's my favorite watched there was in the house.
- 54:20Speaker 2: This is a brilliant. It's just that on. It's just
- 54:23Speaker 2: a classic, classic, brilliant. Thanks for coming on, well keep
