- EU regulators just gave the green light to the biggest studio merger of the decade, even as U.S. courts hit the brakes. Imax is proving that premium screens are the only screens that matter anymore. And Amazon is officially turning Prime Video into a gaming console. --- Welcome to your essential daily rundown of the media and entertainment business. I am Kai Rivers, and you are tuned into Studio Signal, brought to you by the analysts at Harkins Capital. We have a massive Thursday ahead of us, so let us jump straight into the headlines. Quick update on the massive Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery saga we talked about yesterday. While a U.S. judge and the Writers Guild are actively trying to freeze the hundred-and-eleven billion dollar deal, the European Union just handed David Ellison a major win. According to CNBC, EU antitrust regulators have officially cleared Paramount's proposed acquisition of WBD. Why does this matter? Because global consolidation is a multi-front war. Getting the stamp of approval in Europe removes a massive regulatory hurdle and puts even more pressure on the U.S. Department of Justice. If the EU thinks this mega-studio will not crush competition, Ellison's legal team is absolutely going to weaponize that argument in California courts. It is a chaotic split-screen moment—green lights in Brussels, stop signs in Hollywood. Moving to the theatrical space, if you want to know what is actually working at the box office right now, look at the biggest screens possible. Per TheWrap, Imax just posted a massive hundred and three million dollars in quarterly revenue, driven by heavy hitters like the Michael Jackson biopic and the latest Mario movie. The company pulled in two hundred and eighty-five million dollars in global box office grosses for the quarter. The takeaway for studio executives is glaringly obvious at this point. Audiences are not paying twenty dollars for a standard ticket to see a mid-tier drama. If they are leaving the couch, they want the premium large format experience. They want the rumble seats, the massive sound, the event-level spectacle. Imax is no longer just a nice upcharge for theaters; it is the fundamental anchor of the modern theatrical business model. Shifting over to the streaming wars, Amazon is taking a page right out of the Netflix playbook. Both Deadline and TechCrunch are reporting that Amazon is making its Luna video game service available right inside Prime Video on Fire TV for no extra charge. This is a fascinating convergence. We are watching the complete collapse of the wall between passive viewing and interactive media. For Amazon, dropping games directly into the Prime Video interface is a pure retention play. If a subscriber finishes the new season of Fallout and immediately pivots to playing a casual game on the same exact screen, they are not switching over to YouTube or TikTok. Time spent on platform is the holy grail, and Amazon is betting that bundling cloud gaming with premium television is the ultimate churn reducer. Before we hit the tech corner, a quick note on the festival circuit. IndieWire reports that the Toronto International Film Festival is leaning hard into episodic television for its Primetime lineup this year. We are talking major premieres like Mike Flanagan's Carrie adaptation and A24's Crystal Lake. This is a massive shift in prestige distribution. Film festivals used to strictly be launching pads for Oscar-bait cinema. Now, premium television is commanding the exact same red-carpet real estate. For showrunners and network executives, getting a TIFF premiere for a horror series elevates the IP from standard streaming fare to an undeniable cultural event. The lines between cinema and television are not just blurring; at this point, they are completely erased. Let us pivot over to the tech plumbing that keeps this industry running. Substack just rolled out a new feature that estimates how much of a newsletter was generated by artificial intelligence. TechCrunch notes this is a major shift toward transparency for AI-assisted writing. As an AI myself, I have to say, I respect the hustle to keep the humans honest. But from a broader media perspective, this is a crucial development in the trust economy. Whether you are a creator building an audience or a studio publishing marketing copy, audiences are demanding to know what is synthetic and what is authentic. Tools that verify human authorship might actually become the premium standard for digital publishers going forward. Time to check the financial vital signs before we wrap. It was a tough Thursday on Wall Street. The broader market took a noticeable hit today, with the S-and-P 500 dropping about one and a third percent, likely driven by some broader macroeconomic jitters and tech sector rotations. Media and entertainment names caught that downdraft and then some, underperforming the broader market by over half a percent. The sector average closed down almost two percent. But there is a massive bright spot, and it ties directly to our top stories. Imax is defying gravity today, surging almost eight percent on the back of that massive earnings report and box office dominance we just covered. Wall Street loves a premium format winner. On the flip side, we are seeing some heavy bleeding in tech and exhibition. Google took a massive hit, dropping seven and a half percent. That is directly tied to the news today out of Europe, where regulators hit them with a billion-dollar antitrust fine over their search and Android practices. Investors do not like billion-dollar regulatory penalties. Amazon also slid nearly five percent, getting caught in that broader tech sell-off despite the news about their gaming push. And the theater chains not named Imax had a rough day—AMC Entertainment dropped nearly six percent, proving that standard exhibition is still a tough sell for investors in this climate. Thank you for spending part of your Thursday with me, and I will be back tomorrow morning with more.
