- 0:13Solo-Album From the Dark sprechen.
- 0:29Hallo Tony, Julian hier. Star FM in Germany. Hallo Julian.
- 0:50dass das Black Sabbath Abschiedskonzert Back to the Beginning bald als Live-Album erscheint.
- 1:32Leute sehen, dass die neue Album wirklich a couple of days now and here in Germany
- 1:37for example right now it's on spot number 3 on the midweek album charts,
- 1:43which is quite good I guess did you have any expectations like that when you made the record?
- 1:50No you don't expect anything really I just wanted to make a record and enjoy
- 1:54it and then put it out so you know you can never expect anything in this business
- 2:00because it can go one way or the other.
- 2:56Und ist es frustrierend, wenn du eine Idee hast, in the middle of the week and
- 3:00then you have to wait like three or four days until you can put it down in the studio?
- 3:05No, it's, I mean, there was no time scale on it whatsoever and I could work
- 3:11really when we had the time. If Mike wasn't busy, I'd get him over and we'd put something down.
- 3:18Mike Exeter, that is my engineer, producer.
- 3:24But, yeah, there was no rush to do it. I just wanted to put stuff down Wir haben
- 3:54Over a period of a year, a couple of years. But I've done a couple of instrumentals
- 3:59in between that and other things.
- 4:01So, I mean, if you put it all together, it wouldn't be long.
- 4:06But it's just that it's just because we've only worked every so often.
- 4:10It seems like a long time. You said before and talking about instrumentals that
- 4:15maybe you had at the beginning, you had like an instrumental album in mind.
- 5:00ich meine, at some point I will finish them off und do some more,
- 5:27Instrumentals mache oder was.
- 5:35mehr orchestration machen.
- 5:36Let's talk about your vocalist Jorn.
- 5:39People tend to compare his voice to the style of Ronnie James Dio.
- 5:44Would you agree? And was that maybe even one of the reasons you chose him as
- 5:48your singer on this record?
- 5:50I just liked Jorn's voice. I mean, Jorn, I mean, that's the problem,
- 5:55really. Everybody's going to compare something. And it's unfair,
- 5:59really, because Jorn is Jorn. And he was a fan of Theo anyway.
- 6:04But Jorn sings the way he does. He's got that type of voice.
- 6:07And that's the sort of voice I wanted for this album.
- 6:11I like his voice. It's powerful. Und ich wollte das sort of style of singing.
- 6:18Did you have any influence whatsoever on the lyrics? Did he ask you what he
- 6:22should write about? Because in the end it's your name on the record.
- 6:25So did you have any objections or did you say write about this specific theme?
- 6:32No, not really, no. I mean.
- 6:36As far as I'm concerned, you leave that to the singer because they're the ones
- 6:41that's got to express what they're saying.
- 7:12I like his lyrics very good what's happening today so you didn't read the lyrics
- 7:19before he put them down yeah he sent the lyrics over because he was in Sweden,
- 7:39Some of die Lüeckens.
- 7:47Let's talk about Begge, der Bass player.
- 7:56Rush have a female drummer now, Alice Cooper has a girl in his band and it has
- 8:01become quite normal, I think but if you think,
- 8:05back in the days, in the 80s or even in the 90s you couldn't imagine having
- 8:09a heavy metal or hard rock band, having a female band member what are your thoughts on this?
- 8:15Yeah, I mean, years ago, yes, it was very difficult my wife was in a band called
- 8:21Drain STH and they, you know, they were all girl bands And it was difficult for them at that time,
- 8:28even though they did a lot of shows for eight years.
- 8:31But yeah, so I think it's great now that females are getting recognized, because why not?
- 8:39I mean, and the thing is with Becky, I didn't know of Becky beforehand,
- 8:45even though she's been around a bit.
- 8:48Playing Merciful Fate and her own band.
- 8:53And then when I heard of her and then listened to what she had done,
- 8:58I thought, wow, you're really good.
- 9:00And that's why I wanted her to be on the album. Is it true, at one point,
- 9:05you considered even asking Gieser to play bass on the record?
- 9:08Yes, it is. I did ask Gieser, as a matter of fact. And.
- 9:13He couldn't do it. I wanted to do the album in England. They wanted everybody to be here at my house.
- 9:20And Deezer couldn't get over at the time. He was in the States.
- 9:28And he got other things going on. And so I went ahead and just tried to find people.
- 9:36At first I looked for people locally. And Carl Brazil, the drummer, he lives in Birmingham.
- 9:44Und dann Becker, sie lives in Birmingham so it sort of,
- 9:49worked out well because I wanted everybody to come to the house so we could,
- 9:54be together I didn't want to start doing stuff remotely So Gieser couldn't make
- 9:58it on your record but I heard that he is also putting out a solo record did
- 10:03he ask you if you play on one or two tracks and would you be interested?
- 10:07No he hasn't I don't know I've been in touch with him about him doing his solo
- 10:14album, I said, that's great, you've actually got to put in some stuff together,
- 10:19but that's as far as we've gone, I mean,
- 10:22he'll do it when he's ready, I suppose, I'm not sure what he's.
- 10:27He's actually getting out a bit now and playing with other bands,
- 10:30which is great, it's nice to see that.
- 10:33You know, just doing guest spots. But yeah, I mean, who knows?
- 10:39You never know what the future brings. Someone who actually ended up on your
- 10:43album is your old friend Brian May. Can you talk a little bit about your friendship,
- 10:48how it started and what you both have in common besides guitars, obviously?
- 10:53Oh God, our friendship goes back to the early 70s.
- 10:59Und we since we first met,
- 11:04we became friends and then my wife came friends with his first wife my first
- 11:10wife came friends with his first wife,
- 11:13and then we just used to see each other and keep in touch and it just got more
- 11:19and more from there really and yeah he's one of my best friends Brian is,
- 11:42Oder er will turn up at a show we've done like he came back to the beginning,
- 11:47he came to see us when we did the Black Sabbath Royal Ballet,
- 11:51performance, he came there so he does, you know, we get together as much as
- 11:55we can really Talking about back to the beginning, yesterday it was announced
- 11:59that there's going to be a live album as expected coming out just before Christmas, have you listened,
- 12:05to the live mix yet, have they done a good job because I imagine it's quite,
- 12:09difficult with these stadium shows, especially under the circumstances back
- 12:15to the beginning, where there wasn't that much time to set up anything properly.
- 12:20Have you heard the mix, and are you satisfied? I don't know.
- 12:24I didn't know it was coming out on a DVD or whatever. I didn't know about that.
- 12:29Yeah, DVD, vinyl, CD, the whole bunch. Oh yeah, I do know now. I know.
- 12:35I spoke to Giese yesterday, and he didn't know either. So So,
- 12:39apparently it is coming out.
- 12:41So you haven't heard anything about it? No, I hadn't heard anything previously, no. Okay.
- 12:47Nor Giza, nor Giza hadn't. But it is, I know I've seen it advertised because
- 12:52that's, Giza got in touch with me and said, have you seen this?
- 12:56I went, no.
- 12:58So, but anyway, it's probably good that, you know, it's coming out.
- 13:01It's a nice Christmas gift for Sabbath fans, I guess. Yeah.
- 13:04Tony, thank you so much for taking your time.
- 13:07I hope you have a good day Thanks so much Julian Nice to talk to you.
