- 0:00I'm upside down and Gordy goes home.
- 0:02What do you need? What do you need?
- 0:04I said, Gordy, I said here's the deal.
- 0:07I said. I got fuel pouring out.
- 0:10I said I need you to turn me over now.
- 0:14This was my experience and this is what I want to share with you
- 0:17all this night. Scared to death, right?
- 0:20I said, when you flip me back over, flip me back over.
- 0:24I said the fuel is going to hit the headers right and it's going
- 0:28to catch on fire. It's the Kenny Wallace Show
- 0:31brought to you by Jags. Hello everyone, and welcome back
- 0:36to the Kenny Wallace Show brought to you by Jags, the
- 0:39leader in high performance aftermarket car parts.
- 0:43Remember to go to jags.com for everything you need to fix your
- 0:48vehicle. And they're telling me they have
- 0:50all the truck parts and Jeep parts in stock right now for all
- 0:55of you. OK, man, big story in NASCAR,
- 1:01way bigger than I ever thought. Caught me by surprise.
- 1:07Corey Lajoie on Monday at Michigan Speedway.
- 1:12Sunday, the race got rained out so we raced on Monday.
- 1:17So Corey Lajoie comes off Turn 2 and Charlie Marlowe is going to
- 1:24earn. Insert some pictures here In
- 1:26just a minute, Corey makes a move on Noah Graxton.
- 1:34It doesn't go right and Corey goes to flipping.
- 1:37Now I, I got some still pictures here that I took off the TV.
- 1:43So these are my pictures that I took off the TV.
- 1:46And you see Corey is, is flipping and, and listen, it's
- 1:52violent. There's no such thing as tipping
- 1:55over. This is a violent flip.
- 1:58Anytime you flip over, you're you're, you know, you're on your
- 2:04roof. Listen, here's what I have to
- 2:06say about flipping. You're doing something that a
- 2:11car is not meant to do. A car is not built to be upside
- 2:15down. However, we have some safety
- 2:19measures in place for a car to flip.
- 2:23OK. So, for example, you have a row
- 2:27cage, you wear a helmet, you have seatbelts, all these safety
- 2:31devices. However, and I want to be very
- 2:35clear on this, hear me, hear me loud, the motor is not meant to
- 2:41run upside down, OK? The motor in the car is not
- 2:47meant to be run upside down, OK? So you see Corey's car, it's
- 2:52done all this flipping, it's violent.
- 2:55Now, what happened was Steve Letarte and Jeff Burton on NBC,
- 3:02they were shocked. They said, oh, my God, this
- 3:05should not happen. Well, when that happened,
- 3:08everybody in America some. Charlie, insert something else
- 3:13here. Charlie, I'm going to send you
- 3:15this. This is why we're doing this
- 3:17show. I simply gave my opinion on why
- 3:22this flip happened and we're over 260,000 likes comments.
- 3:30I mean, here Charlie, let's insert that right now.
- 3:34Here we go. Check this out, would you?
- 3:36So I've circled the likes so we're over 260,000 and I'm like,
- 3:43Oh my God. I guess I'd better do a show
- 3:45about flipping if the people have been going on for days and
- 3:50days about Corey Lajoie flipping.
- 3:53And I'm like, why is this such a big now deal?
- 3:55Now we had Ryan Priest as my dear friend, you know, Dale
- 4:01Earnhardt junior talked about on Dirty MO Medium.
- 4:04Ryan Priest flipped worse last year on the back straightaway at
- 4:09Daytona. We've watched, you know, Austin
- 4:13Dillon flip violently on the front stretch at Daytona.
- 4:17So why is everybody overreacting to this flip?
- 4:20I mean, roof flaps or not, we have all the safety devices
- 4:25known to engineers. We have we, we've done
- 4:28everything we can do. So it's like, why is everybody
- 4:33overreacting about this particular flip when we've been
- 4:37flipping with roof flaps? Ryan Preese had roof flaps.
- 4:41He flipped Austin Dillon, he climbed the wall in the front
- 4:44straightaway. He had a roof flaps.
- 4:46So we had all these flips over the last two years, but now all
- 4:50of a sudden there's complete drama about this flip.
- 4:54Well, a lot of people are telling me it's because Jeff
- 4:57Burton, Steve Letarte said, oh, my God, oh, my God, this should
- 5:01not have happened. So what happened?
- 5:05OK, are we good now? I've given you, I've given you
- 5:09my disclaimer. I've showed you Corey Lajoy.
- 5:13We put the still pictures up. He's flipped.
- 5:16I've given you examples that people have been flipping for
- 5:182-3 years, ever since the invention of the roof.
- 5:22Flaps are meant to help. OK, sometimes a car comes up, it
- 5:26goes back down, and we say the roof flaps save the day right
- 5:30there. But for the most part, people
- 5:33have been flipping for years, even since the invention of the
- 5:37roof flaps. Well, all right, I talked to
- 5:40Charlie and I said, Charlie, let's do a show about flipping.
- 5:44So now we're going to do something that'll make your
- 5:47eyeballs pop out of your head. I have done some flipping.
- 5:51You talk about somebody that's done some flipping.
- 5:54Charlie, let's insert the picture right now.
- 5:58This is around 2016 somewhere in there.
- 6:02Let's insert the picture right now.
- 6:05OK, here you go. Yep, that's me.
- 6:09That's me. That is in Quincy, IL at Adams
- 6:14County Speedway. And buddy, I got some air.
- 6:18That was a real flip, as Kenny Schrader would say.
- 6:21Yeah, that was a real flip. You did not tip over.
- 6:25That was a real flip. Even the World of Outlaws Sprint
- 6:29car guys are like, Yep, that's a real flip.
- 6:32Herman, how many times did you flip?
- 6:34I said around six. OK, now that you see it, that's
- 6:39air. You can see the car.
- 6:40That's a banked racetrack. What happened?
- 6:45What happened? Why'd you flip, Herman?
- 6:49And here's where my experience is going to come in.
- 6:51And let me tell you something else.
- 6:54I flipped a total three times that flip right there at Adams
- 6:59County Speedway in Quincy, IL And I've also, as Schrader said,
- 7:03I tipped over one time and turned three and four Volusia,
- 7:07but then I flipped another time. I was running 4th at the Gator
- 7:13at Volusia. We were coming to the green
- 7:15flag. Nick Hoffman, he had some
- 7:18aluminum lug nuts, aluminum lug nuts that came loose.
- 7:24His left footer tire fell off coming to the green, and my left
- 7:29front went up over Austin Dillon when he was driving the black #3
- 7:34modified. And when my left front went up
- 7:37over, I started flipping. Well, something happened there
- 7:41that scared the bejeezis out of me.
- 7:44So we're going to tell you about that moment.
- 7:46Then we're going to go to the Quincy Adams County Speedway
- 7:53flip. All right?
- 7:54The second time I flipped was on the front straightaway at
- 7:58Volusia, and I flipped. And when I flipped over, I end
- 8:02upside down. Now remember, cars are not built
- 8:06to flip. However, we wear helmets and
- 8:08seatbelts and roll cages. But motors.
- 8:11Here's specifically the carburetor with the gasoline.
- 8:16The gasoline, the gas, you'll burn to death.
- 8:19You'll kill yourself because you're flipped upside down.
- 8:23Oh, and by the way, people have killed themselves because when
- 8:27they've been flipped upside down, they panic and they reach
- 8:31down, they grab the seat belt, they jerked the seat belt loose
- 8:36and they fell down and broke their neck.
- 8:40So flipping is funny until it's not.
- 8:44People have broke their neck because they're upside down.
- 8:47They're like, I got to get out of this car before I burn to
- 8:49death. They released the seat belt.
- 8:51They forget to put their hand down and they fall down.
- 8:54They break their neck and they kill themselves.
- 8:57So the flip didn't kill them, but releasing the seatbelts and
- 9:01breaking your neck killed them. And oh, by the way, when you're
- 9:05upside down, all the gas is draining out of my carburetor.
- 9:09So here's where my story starts. I'm on the front straightaway at
- 9:13Volusia. I'm upside down.
- 9:16And my local friend, there's hundreds of people gathering
- 9:19around the car. It's a catastrophic wreck.
- 9:23And Ray Walsh from right here in Saint Louis goes, Herman, what
- 9:26do you need? What do you need?
- 9:28And I said, Ray, don't let me burn to death.
- 9:30The gas is pouring out of the carburetor.
- 9:33So I heard about the story of the people dying releasing her
- 9:39seatbelts. So I I said, Ray, don't let me
- 9:42burn to death. The gas is just pouring because
- 9:45I'm upside down. The gas is pouring out of the
- 9:48carburetor. I see it, I see it right because
- 9:52there it's sticking up out of my hood because I'm in a dirt car.
- 9:56It's not like a NASCAR Cup car. My carburetor, my air cleaners
- 10:00up, sticking up out of the hood so I can see it.
- 10:03I'm like, oh, no. So I put my hand down, I release
- 10:07my buckles and I'm skinny, man. I'm skinny.
- 10:11I'm as skinny as I get, and I barely get out of that damn
- 10:14thing. All right, So I escaped death.
- 10:18My wife was there on the front straightaway.
- 10:21It was a very scary moment. Now, I flipped over once.
- 10:26Remember down in turns one and two?
- 10:27Schrader said. I tipped over, then I really
- 10:30flipped, Schrader said. That was a flip.
- 10:32Any time the Sprint car guys tell you you flipped, that's
- 10:36when you get your approval because they're professional
- 10:39flippers. We spin out and they flipped it
- 10:42When, when, when wing Sprint cars are open with guys, when
- 10:46they flip, that's just like spinning out for them.
- 10:49They just, they flip all the time.
- 10:50Hell, they flip, tip it over and take back off and race.
- 10:54I've seen guys flip, take over, take off and and win the race
- 10:58because those cars are designed to flip.
- 11:01That's just the way they are. Stock cars are not designed to
- 11:05flip. So all right, I told you my
- 11:08experience there at that time. All right, Charlie, let's go.
- 11:11Let's go back to this flip one more time.
- 11:14Let's insert Charlie, let's insert the pitcher again one
- 11:18more time. Here I am, Adams County
- 11:20Speedway, Quincy, IL All right, knock on wood.
- 11:29This is a this is a wood desk. I'm knocking on wood.
- 11:35This was the last time I flipped.
- 11:37And by this time I'd become a professional.
- 11:40So I go down the back straight away and I had some Winter's
- 11:45hubs on. This was the brand called
- 11:48Winters Hubs. Well, after I flipped, everybody
- 11:51told me, Oh yeah. Well, what had happened?
- 11:54The Chinese junk metal, of course, everybody in racing
- 11:58goes, Oh yeah, you know, you get some bad metal.
- 12:00It's that, that's that stuff made in China.
- 12:03Chinese junk studs, the wheel studs that hold my right rear
- 12:06wheel on. They broke off.
- 12:09Well, they weren't loose. What had happened?
- 12:12The studs were still there. The, the, the, so like you got a
- 12:15bolt, right? And here's the head, the heads
- 12:17broke off. And so as I'm going down the
- 12:20back straightaway, my right rear wheel falls off.
- 12:24As I'm going into the corner, my right rear wheel falls off.
- 12:28My car right here. Let's do it like this.
- 12:34Here's the moth. All right, I'm going, this is
- 12:39the right rear. I'm going down the straightaway.
- 12:41This falls off and then it digs into the frame and then I start
- 12:48flipping. I start vaulting.
- 12:51OK, I'm up in the air. I'm shocked.
- 12:53I'm like, what the hell just happened?
- 12:54Why am I flipping? And so, as you saw in the
- 12:58picture, this has got this is serious.
- 13:00So I land upside down and thank God once again, Gordy Gundaker.
- 13:06Yes, Gordy Gundaker runs with the World of Outlaws and Gordy,
- 13:09you know, his brother Trevor, Mom, Kevin and Tammy.
- 13:13Gordy Gundaker. I'm upside down and Gordy goes
- 13:17home. What do you need?
- 13:18What do you need? I said, Gordy, I said here's the
- 13:22deal. I said.
- 13:23I got fuel pouring out. I said I need you to turn me
- 13:29over now. This was my experience and this
- 13:31is what I want to share with you all this night.
- 13:34Scared to death, right? I said, when you flip me back
- 13:38over, flip me back over, I said the fuel is going to hit the
- 13:41headers right and it's going to catch on fire.
- 13:45The reason I decided to do this is because my roof was
- 13:49collapsed. I've learned.
- 13:50I've learned this. When you build a dirt car on the
- 13:53driver's side, don't make the nameplate real thick.
- 13:57Don't make it real thick because when you're upside down, the
- 14:02roof, the roof right here, right here, the roof smashes down and
- 14:08now you can't get out of the damn car.
- 14:11Then if you make make the door too tall, see where the driver
- 14:15tries to get out, you can't get out.
- 14:19So I thought, Oh my God, my roof is.
- 14:21So I, I started making my name plates.
- 14:25I started making this area thin. That was my phone.
- 14:31So anyway, I said, Gordy, here's what we're going to do.
- 14:34And I'm saying this real fast. You, you all flip me back over.
- 14:39I'm going to I'm going to have my hand on my belt.
- 14:41Have my hand here, flip me over. I'm going to release the belt.
- 14:45I'm going to go, I'm going to hold my breath.
- 14:48And as soon as I catch on fire because the gas is going to hit
- 14:52the headers, because now we're turning the car back the way it
- 14:54ought to be, right? I'm like this.
- 14:58Soon as we go get over the carburetors up here, the gas is
- 15:02going to hit the headers. Sure enough, sure enough, I
- 15:06become a Kenny Wallace had become a professional flipper.
- 15:11I mean, it happened exactly as soon as they went over.
- 15:15As soon as it went over, I land, I land, I go, I hit the
- 15:20seatbelts, it catches on fire. They hit it with the fire
- 15:24distinguisher and I get out. OK, That's my story.
- 15:29That car was destroyed because it caught air and it diamonded.
- 15:34It twisted it, you know what I mean?
- 15:36The car was twisted because I was hitting right front, right
- 15:39rear. Car was destroyed, framing cage
- 15:42was twisted. So when we talk about flipping,
- 15:47OK, I see a lot of you people out there get get real like that
- 15:52car should never flip. Here's the bottom line.
- 15:55You're going to flip. I don't care what kind of safety
- 15:58advances NASCAR comes out with. You're going to flip and that's
- 16:04all there is to it. So everybody hold your horses.
- 16:10Remember we say that back when we were in school, Hey, hold
- 16:13your horses. Why?
- 16:15I mean it, take the reins, hold your horses.
- 16:19You're going to flip no matter if you're, I mean all the only
- 16:23reason we're doing this is because everybody's like, he
- 16:26shouldn't have flipped. No, you're going to flip because
- 16:29he took his right front. And listen, even the mayor, the
- 16:34mayor is Jeff Burton safety. We do our best.
- 16:40You're going to find a vulnerable moment and you're
- 16:42going to say, oh, I never saw that.
- 16:45I can't believe we hit here. You look at a dirt track and
- 16:48you're like, Oh my God, it it dirt tracks are so dangerous
- 16:51because walls are not proper here.
- 16:53NASCAR, Formula One, we're as good as we can be, but you're
- 16:58still going to find those spots. So Corey Lajoie, Corey Lajoie,
- 17:05he takes, what's Corey do? Let's take that trip now let's
- 17:09take brother Rusty all right, so you got OK, let's let's say this
- 17:17OK, Corey, this is Corey Lajoie, Brother Rusty.
- 17:25Corey Lajoie coming down the back straightaway turns left,
- 17:30gets ready to go around and he takes his right front tire.
- 17:34He takes see that he takes that right front tire and he and he
- 17:37gets into Noah grats and he launches, he launches himself.
- 17:41Corey did this himself. He'll tell you he launched it
- 17:45up. He did it.
- 17:48The car, the car wasn't going straight and just started
- 17:51flipping. The right front goes into Noah's
- 17:55left rear launches and starts flipping.
- 17:59So the, the whole damn reason I'm doing this is people, we're
- 18:01going to flip. And when you flip, it's not fun
- 18:05and it's nothing to make fun of. I just explained to you my
- 18:08experience with flipping. Now I do want to give a shout
- 18:11out to, to end. We're going to end, OK.
- 18:16We're going to end like this. Willie's carburetor out of Mount
- 18:20Carmel, IL saved the day. They came out with what we call
- 18:26roll over plates. They go between the metering
- 18:30blocks and the end of the carburetor.
- 18:32It's about, it's about, you know, about 3/8, maybe 1/2 inch
- 18:36thick, 3/8. And what it does is when you
- 18:40flip over these, these small like like sticks, like little
- 18:44miniature pennies, like like change like pennies, these
- 18:47things fall down and they do not let the fuel escape.
- 18:53So now when dirt cars flip, the fuel should not come out of the
- 18:59venturi tubes on the carburetor. Now, fuel might come out
- 19:03somewhere else, but once again, we're doing our best.
- 19:08All right, everybody, shout out to Willie's carburetors for an
- 19:12incredible invention called the rollover plates.
- 19:15Car flips over. Fuel does not come out of the
- 19:18venturi tubes. All that fuel in the carburetor
- 19:21comes out, pours on the header. Car burst into flames.
- 19:24Driver burns to death. Dead.
- 19:28Worst thing in the world watching my burn to death.
- 19:31All right, everybody respond right here.
- 19:34What are we missing? How come it was OK?
- 19:37Here's the question. Why was it OK for Ryan Priest to
- 19:41flip last year and that was a bad flip?
- 19:45Why was it OK for Austin Dillon to flip on the front
- 19:47straightaway? That was a bad flip.
- 19:51Why is everybody complaining about this flip?
- 19:53I just explained to you, y'all are telling me that it was
- 19:57because Jeff Burton and Steve Letart said, oh, that should
- 20:01have never happened. Well, maybe it should have never
- 20:04happened. And then the other reason we're
- 20:06doing this video, Charlie, let's end it like let's let let's
- 20:09insert this one more time. I did my take on why the car
- 20:14flipped and over 260,000 of you have responded here it is.
- 20:19Look at it so we can talk about the turtle shell bottom helped
- 20:28it flip. We can talk about the rockers
- 20:32making it flip. People, if you race long enough,
- 20:37you're going to flip. All right, everybody, I hope you
- 20:41enjoyed my take on my dangerous moments in life flipping my race
- 20:46car. Remember, we are in podcast
- 20:49form. If you're watching this on
- 20:51podcast, you didn't get to see me emulate with my little
- 20:54diecast cars here, but still, you get it and you understand
- 20:58it. We are in podcast form and
- 21:00iTunes until the next Kenny Wallace show.
- 21:03We'll see you next time.
