- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Let's begin with kind of what's going on with Jesus here in chapter 16.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Jesus is talking to his disciples,
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: and he says,
- 0:12there is so much more I want to tell you than what I just told
- 0:20you right now.
- 0:24I can imagine the disciples,
- 0:26I know,
- 0:26I certainly would have been thinking,
- 0:29excuse me,
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: What do you mean, you can't?
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: You've already told us you're leaving,
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: so we've got,
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: like,
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: one dinner,
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: and then sort of a quasi-pleasant,
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: unpleasant stroll to the garden,
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: and then you're just trying to leave.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: How is it that you just can't tell us the rest?
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, really, Jesus?
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, have you ever experienced that in your life?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: It's sort of like this divine cliff that we've got going on here.
- 1:10It's sort of like,
- 1:13well,
- 1:13like your boss saying,
- 1:16there is this presentation due tomorrow.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And I'll just sort of explain it then, right?
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:27Or your dentist looking in your mouth and going,
- 1:31oh,
- 1:35wow,
- 1:35that's really concerning.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: We'll discuss that in about a year.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Or the classic,
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: you're in trouble at home and your mother says,
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: we will talk about that when your father gets up.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: which is the fear of every child I have heard before, as we all have.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: It's that kind of thing going on.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: This divine cliffhanger.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: There's so much more to tell you, but I just...
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: right now.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: But fortunately, Jesus adds this.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: When she, the spirit of truth comes, she will guide you into all truth.
- 2:25Now,
- 2:26we talked about this lastly,
- 2:27right,
- 2:28about using the personal pronoun she.
- 2:32when Jesus is talking about the spirit,
- 2:35and that is the language that he would have used.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: He would have used the personal pronoun he,
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: because in Aramaic,
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: which is the language that Jesus spoke,
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: spirit is a feminine noun.
- 2:49And so when you refer to a feminine noun in a language like
- 2:53Aramaic or Latin or
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Spanish or whatever it might be,
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: pretty much any other language than English,
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: right?
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: It
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: would have been a feminine pronoun.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: So he would have said, she is going to bring you into all truth.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: So I think the disciples were probably alike, and we should be too.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Little bit of a plot twist here going on.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Jesus is not ghosting the disciples.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: He's not ghosting us.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: He is tagging someone else in.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Not just anyone.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: It is us.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Fearing.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Jesus is about to hand everything over.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: And who's he handing it to?
- 3:46Not a board of directors,
- 3:48not the religious leaders of the time,
- 3:51not even the disciples,
- 3:54right?
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: He handed over to the spirit,
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: to her,
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: to the spirit of truth,
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: to the spirit of wisdom,
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: to the spirit of peace.
- 4:05And she is going to provide the intel for the whole rest of the
- 4:11mission until Jesus
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Christ returns.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And we need to notice that this is not some news.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: character showing up in the sequel.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: He has been here since the beginning.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: If you look at Proverbs,
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: you will find her high-low wisdom standing at the crossroads,
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: raising her voice,
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: calling out to anyone who will listen.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: And she's not whispering in a corner.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: She's out pulling at the gate,
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: in the street,
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: just like Pentecost,
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: saying to you old people,
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: I call out,
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: I raise my voice to all humanity.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Proverbs 8.4
- 5:06she's ancient she ain't no newcomer in fact she says the lord
- 5:12created me at the
- 5:14beginning of his work the first of his acts a long ago i was
- 5:22deciding like a master
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: worker and i was his delight daily
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Proverbs 8, 22 and 30.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Just look it up.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Let that in for just a moment.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: The spirit of wisdom was made before kind.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: At very beginning,
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Before stars were flung into the sky.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Before ocean had formed.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: He was beside God, shaping creation, delighting in it.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And, very important, delighting in us.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Delighting.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: In humanity.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Really.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: For humanity.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: From the very beginning.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Alongside God.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: And alongside Jesus.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: So Jesus is saying.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: The spirit that I've known forever.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Will guide you into all truth.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: He's saying.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: This is a new voice.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: This is the voice.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: That helped build the world.
- 6:48that has been speaking all along,
- 6:52the one who has long been in your corner,
- 6:58listen to her.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: That shape is how the disciples are meant to respond,
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: not with suspicion,
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: not with control,
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: not by trying to manage her,
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: with attentiveness.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: They were not being handed a textbook or, let me be clear, a Bible.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: They were being invited into a relationship with a living,
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: creative,
- 7:43truth and wisdom speaking present that would be alongside them
- 7:49at the end of the
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: world.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: And so are we.
- 7:57We don't listen to a spirit who just gives us moral tips or
- 8:02doctrinal answers.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: We listen to wisdom herself who shaped the universe,
- 8:11who knew Jesus in the beginning and stood by him and God in the
- 8:18beginning.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: That is an amazing revelation in my mind.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: To follow the Spirit is to listen for wisdom,
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: voice,
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: in our questions,
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: in our prayers,
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: in the mess of everyday life and decision-making.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: It's to believe that the Spirit
- 8:46spirit bonding galaxies also care deeply about your next
- 8:54conversation about your
- 8:56next choice about your next act of love so friends do not
- 9:09expect this spirit to
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: stay quiet
- 9:14She has been speaking into the world since the very beginning,
- 9:20and oh,
- 9:21how she loves to talk.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: And she's got something to say today.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: She still cries out at the crossroads of our lives.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: Turn, listen, listen.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: It's a beautiful, beautiful message.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: So the big question then is,
- 9:47how then do I foster a listening dialogue and relationship with
- 9:55this spirit of
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: wisdom and truth and God?
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: How do I foster that relationship when, of course, it is the spirit?
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: first off,
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: it's not just believing,
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: and it's not just doctrine,
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: and it is not just verse on the wall.
- 10:23We need to cultivate somehow a real living relationship with
- 10:27this divine void who
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: still cries out,
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: who still nudges,
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: and who still leaves.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: And thankfully,
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Proverbs has a lot to say about how we can do that.
- 10:41So we're going to look at six different things that Proverbs
- 10:46teaches us throughout
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: the book of Proverbs that was written by Solomon,
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: who was,
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: according to him and perhaps others,
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: the wisest person in the world.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: First thing that we need to learn to do is to listen daily life.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Wisdom, the scripture says, calls out in the street.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Proverbs 1, 20 and 23 and 8, 1 through 3.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: She speaks, it says, at the crossroad.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: So we must stay present in our everyday life,
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: not just in churches,
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: but out there in the streets,
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: in everyday choices.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: We need to begin to look for her in conversations,
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: in creation,
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: and in conflict,
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: as Jesus invited us to.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Secondly, we are to sit with attention.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Proverbs says, seek her like silver.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: So treat spiritual listening like a treasure.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: Who doesn't love a treasure hunt?
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: Prioritize quiet, reflective, and spiritual reading.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Start your day asking, truth are you revealing to me today?
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: And then
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Dig for it.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: All your being with all of your intention.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Third, trust.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Don't assume.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Proverbs 3, 1 through 6 says, Leave not on your own understanding.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Listening means letting go of being right all of the time.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Staying open to new ideas.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Letting the spirit change your mind.
- 12:41And so daily we need to ask the spirit of wisdom,
- 12:45what am I not feeding in all of this?
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Fourth day, humble.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: To fear the Lord is to hate pride, Proverbs 13 says.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Pride blocks wisdom.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: Humility clears the way for us.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: So when we are tempted to react quickly,
- 13:11Pause and pray and ask,
- 13:15is this a spirit going on here or my ego talking to me?
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: Five, walk with the wise.
- 13:27This is a huge Church of the Brethren thing where we emphasize
- 13:33walking together,
- 13:36the movement and the guidance and the teaching of the Holy
- 13:42Spirit in community.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Proverbs 13, 20 says, walk with the wise and become wise.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: So the Spirit speaks through people, right?
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Through our brothers and sisters.
- 13:59So we need to seek out wise companions to create community
- 14:04where questions are
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: welcome and discernment is shared.
- 14:09Right now,
- 14:10I am blessed to be able to be walking with a number of folks,
- 14:17youth,
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Young adult,
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: older folks who are interested in getting baptized,
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: who are interested in joining the church.
- 14:26And part of that is it's creating a welcoming and an open space
- 14:31where real deep
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: questions can be shared and where we can learn from one another.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: That is what we are trying to do here, and it's a blessing to be part of.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: And last, join her joy.
- 14:48Proverbs 31 says,
- 14:50I was rejoicing in the inhabited world and delighting in the
- 14:55human race.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Wisdom does not always have to be heavy.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: It doesn't always have to be deep.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Often,
- 15:07wisdom is found in laughter and beauty and justice and mercy
- 15:12and in music and in
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: celebration and in child wonder.
- 15:19Ask where is the spirit of God rejoicing today and how can I
- 15:25join in with that?
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: The spirit of wisdom, truth, and peace is not silent.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: She is speaking in your life right now.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: might not be in thunder,
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: might not be in lightning,
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: probably isn't,
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: but maybe in a voice,
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: in a small voice,
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: even the voice of a child,
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: or the silence of your morning coffee or walk,
- 15:55or a scripture that stays with you all week long that you just
- 16:00ponder and reflect
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: on,
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: or the night you feel when you ask someone who needs your attention.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: It can be at all those places.
- 16:13It's important for us to remember that Jesus never said that we
- 16:19were going to
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: figure everything out on top of them.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: He said, the spirit will guide you into all.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: The spirit will remind, listen.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: So let's start asking.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Spirit, what are you saying to me today?
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: And more importantly, let's start asking yourself, am I listening?
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Because that is where transformation is.
