- Lucas: So, Luna, I've been thinking about something that came up in a conversation with a chief information officer last week. She left a role after just fourteen months, and she's convinced that's going to haunt her for the rest of her career. Luna: Fourteen months is short. But is it really a death sentence? I feel like the market has gotten more forgiving. Lucas: It's not a death sentence, but it is a hurdle. And the way she's framing it to herself is the real problem. She keeps calling it a 'failed tenure.' I pushed back on that language. The story you tell yourself about a short stint matters as much as the story you tell a search committee. Luna: So what's the alternative? How do you actually frame it so it doesn't feel like a failure? Lucas: Well, first, you have to separate the circumstances from your performance. In her case, the company got acquired and the new parent company brought in their own technology team. She was a cost synergy, not a performance problem. That's a very different story from being pushed out for cause. Luna: Right, context matters. But recruiters still see the short tenure and they're going to ask about it. How do you answer that question without sounding defensive? Lucas: That's the million-dollar question. The worst thing you can do is get into a detailed chronology of who did what. Instead, you want to give a concise, confident narrative that focuses on what you learned and how you're a better leader because of it. She actually had a great story about steering a major integration project during that time, which is a huge asset. Luna: So you're saying the short tenure can actually be a signal of adaptability and resilience, if you frame it right? Lucas: Exactly. And that's the angle I want to dig into today. We're going to talk about how executives can turn a short tenure into a career asset, not a liability. We'll look at the specific narrative techniques, the data on how search committees actually evaluate this, and some practical steps you can take to rebuild your credibility. Luna: I'm curious about the data. Is there any research on how common short tenures are at the executive level? Lucas: There is. And it's more common than you'd think. A study by executive search firm Spencer Stuart found that the average tenure for S&P 500 CEOs is around seven years, but that's skewed by long-serving founders. For non-founder CEOs, the median is closer to five years. But when you look at roles like chief information officer or chief marketing officer, the turnover is much higher. Some estimates suggest the average CIO tenure is under five years, and shorter stints are not unusual. Luna: So if it's common, why does it feel like such a red flag? Lucas: Because it's a signal of potential risk. Search committees are risk-averse. They want to know that if they hire you, you're going to stay and deliver. A short tenure raises questions about your commitment, your ability to navigate politics, or your fit with the culture. But here's the thing: it's not disqualifying. It's just a data point that needs context. Luna: So what's the best way to provide that context? I imagine you don't want to bring it up proactively. Lucas: You actually do want to address it proactively, but on your own terms. The worst thing is to let the interviewer stumble upon it and have to ask. You want to weave it into your narrative early, in a way that reframes it as a strategic decision or a learning opportunity. Luna: Can you give us a concrete example of what that sounds like? Lucas: Sure. Let's take the CIO I mentioned. Instead of saying, 'I left after fourteen months because the company was acquired,' she could say something like, 'I joined to lead a digital transformation, and I made significant progress on our cloud migration. But when the acquisition happened, I recognized that the new leadership had a different technology vision, and I made the decision to step aside to allow them to build their own team. I'm proud of what we accomplished in that time, and I learned a lot about leading through ambiguity.' That turns it into a story of strategic thinking and confidence. Luna: That's powerful. It shows self-awareness and a focus on the organization's interests, not just your own. Lucas: Exactly. And that's the key: you have to make it about the company, not about you. You're not a victim; you're a leader who made a tough call. That's the narrative that resonates with boards. Luna: What if the short tenure wasn't so clean? What if it involved a bad fit or a personality conflict? Lucas: That's tougher, but not impossible. You have to be honest, but you can still frame it as a learning experience. For example, you might say, 'I realized that the organization's risk tolerance was different from mine, and I learned that I need to be more deliberate in assessing cultural fit before I commit.' That shows self-reflection and growth. Luna: So it's really about turning a negative into a positive by focusing on the lessons. Lucas: Right. And there's a practical tool I like to call the 'narrative portfolio.' It's a document you create for yourself that captures your career story, including the short tenures, and reframes them into a cohesive narrative. It's not for your resume; it's for your own preparation. You practice telling your story in a way that is authentic and compelling. Luna: That's a great idea. How do you actually build one? Lucas: Start by listing every role you've had, including the short ones. For each, write down three things: the challenge you faced, the action you took, and the result you achieved. Then, for the short tenures specifically, add a fourth element: the reason for leaving, framed positively. Finally, connect them all into a single narrative arc that shows your growth as a leader. Luna: That sounds like a lot of work, but it's probably worth it. Lucas: It is. And it's something you should do even if you haven't had a short tenure. It's a great exercise for any executive who wants to be more intentional about their career story. But for someone with a short stint, it's essential. Luna: What about the practical side? How do you handle the resume and LinkedIn profile? Do you even list a short tenure? Lucas: That's a common question. The short answer is yes, you list it. Gaps are worse than short tenures. But you can be strategic about how you present it. For example, you might group it under a broader 'consulting' or 'interim' heading if that's applicable. But if it was a direct hire, you should list it with the dates and a brief description that highlights your achievements. Luna: What about the interview? How do you handle the question when it comes up? Lucas: You prepare a two-sentence response that you can deliver with confidence. Something like, 'It was a short tenure due to a strategic shift in the company, and I'm proud of the work we did. I learned a lot about leading through transition, and I'm excited to bring that resilience to this role.' You don't dwell on it; you acknowledge it and move on. Luna: Do you think boards are more or less open to short tenures these days, given how fast the business environment is changing? Lucas: I think they're more open, actually. We're seeing a trend toward more fluid careers, especially in technology and digital roles. Boards understand that sometimes a change in strategy or leadership necessitates a shorter stint. But they still want to see that you're not a flight risk. Luna: So it's really about demonstrating that you're in it for the long haul in your next role. Lucas: Exactly. And that's where you can turn a short tenure into a positive by showing that you're selective and intentional about your next move. You can say, 'I've been deliberate about finding a role where I can make a long-term impact.' That reassures them that you're not just looking for a quick pit stop. Luna: It's interesting that you mention being deliberate. I've seen a lot of executives make the mistake of jumping into the first offer after a short tenure, just to prove they're employable. That could backfire. Lucas: Absolutely. That's the 'tenure trap.' If you're not careful, you can end up with a string of short stints, which is much harder to explain. The best strategy is to take your time, be selective, and make sure your next role is a great fit. That's how you turn a single short tenure into a blip, not a pattern. Luna: So what's your advice for someone who is in that in-between period right now, trying to figure out their next move? Lucas: First, do the narrative portfolio exercise. It will help you reframe your story internally. Second, get feedback from trusted mentors or a coach. They can help you see your short tenure from an outside perspective and identify the strengths you might be overlooking. And third, practice your pitch until it feels natural. Luna: That's solid advice. And I want to add something: if you're listening and you've had a short tenure, you're not alone. It happens to some of the best leaders. The key is how you handle it. Lucas: And that's really the takeaway. A short tenure doesn't define you; your narrative does. If you can tell a compelling story about what you learned and how you've grown, you can turn it into an asset. Luna: Before we wrap up, I want to mention something that came to mind. We've been talking about how to reframe your story for the market, but we should also acknowledge that our listeners are the ones who help us keep this show ad-free. Just know that we're grateful for your listenership. Now, back to the topic: one last thing I want to say about turning a short tenure into an asset is that it's not just about the story you tell others. It's about the story you tell yourself. If you believe it's a failure, it will show. But if you see it as a learning experience, that confidence will come through. Luna: Well said. So what's your final takeaway for someone who's preparing for an interview after a short tenure? Lucas: Prepare, practice, and be honest. And remember, you're not the first person to have a short tenure, and you won't be the last. The question is, what did you learn? And how will you use that to be a better leader? If you can answer those, you'll be fine. Luna: And that's a great note to end on. For those of you facing this, you've got this. Lucas: Thanks for joining us. We'll talk to you next time.
