- 0:02Speaker 1: There we go.
- 0:03Speaker 2: We got a former Arizona State Sun devil here baby
- 0:06Speaker 2: with us, one of my good buddies Meryl Kelly joining us,
- 0:09Speaker 2: and one of the head of the rotations. That's gonna
- 0:11Speaker 2: be a big focal point. I'm gonna start just because
- 0:14Speaker 2: we had one of your new former teammates already, Zach
- 0:18Speaker 2: galling with us.
- 0:18Speaker 3: How big is it to have him back?
- 0:20Speaker 1: Huge?
- 0:22Speaker 4: You know, obviously his resume the last couple of years
- 0:24Speaker 4: kind of speak for itself. But I think he's a guy,
- 0:27Speaker 4: you know, on and off the field that the guys
- 0:30Speaker 4: in the clubhouse rely on. Then they they go to
- 0:32Speaker 4: when there's a big time situation, and just to have
- 0:35Speaker 4: another anchor in the rotation another piece of depth, is
- 0:38Speaker 4: obviously huge.
- 0:39Speaker 3: He's I think, Yeah, sorry, Scott.
- 0:41Speaker 5: You I just wanted to ask while we're on that topic,
- 0:45Speaker 5: you know, for you, I mean, you guys actually had
- 0:47Speaker 5: very different off seasons. You signed pretty early, Zach had
- 0:51Speaker 5: to wait for a long time, and we spoke to
- 0:53Speaker 5: z Act like forty minutes ago about the qualifying offer.
- 0:56Speaker 5: He had, you know, kind of an up and down season,
- 0:59Speaker 5: the second half much better than the first. So for you,
- 1:02Speaker 5: what was the free agent process, like it seems pretty smooth.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Uh yeah, mine was, like you said, probably a lot
- 1:10Speaker 4: more fun than his was. I'm just watching his from afar,
- 1:15Speaker 4: you know, being so close. We played golf, you know,
- 1:17Speaker 4: probably once a week in the offseason, and every time
- 1:20Speaker 4: I'd see him, I'd ask him what we got, and
- 1:22Speaker 4: and every time he told me nothing.
- 1:23Speaker 1: It was it was shocking.
- 1:25Speaker 4: I mean, I don't think anybody, like you said, the
- 1:27Speaker 4: down season, but I don't think anybody could have imagined
- 1:29Speaker 4: the offseason that he had.
- 1:31Speaker 1: But for me, it was cool.
- 1:33Speaker 4: I mean, obviously the fact that these guys were first
- 1:35Speaker 4: in the first on the table. You know, they made
- 1:39Speaker 4: it very clear early, even going back to the trade
- 1:42Speaker 4: last year, that that was their goal, and the.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Fact that they showed up.
- 1:45Speaker 4: You know, there's not a lot of times I feel
- 1:47Speaker 4: like that you leave a team and then are able
- 1:49Speaker 4: and lucky enough to come back to the place that
- 1:50Speaker 4: you want. I'll be forever grateful for these guys, you know,
- 1:54Speaker 4: sitting here going into my eighth year coming back from Korea.
- 1:58Speaker 4: You know, I don't think I ever could have imagined
- 2:00Speaker 4: and still be in here, not only in the big leagues,
- 2:04Speaker 4: but also being a diamondback so it's pretty cool to
- 2:06Speaker 4: see the fact that they you know, they what their
- 2:09Speaker 4: words were towards the end, you know, were actually real,
- 2:12Speaker 4: and they made it very apparent that they wanted me back.
- 2:16Speaker 6: You're one of the few guys that gets traded and
- 2:18Speaker 6: comes back, right, So that had to make you feel special,
- 2:21Speaker 6: because most guys get traded and they never get to
- 2:24Speaker 6: come back to their original organization. So that, I mean
- 2:26Speaker 6: that right there tells me they must have wanted you bad, bad,
- 2:30Speaker 6: because it's pretty awesome as a player to have that feeling.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Yeah, like I said, I'm lucky.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Like you said, I don't think too many guys get
- 2:38Speaker 4: the opportunity to go back to a team that they
- 2:40Speaker 4: were traded from. Usually for at least from what I've seen,
- 2:42Speaker 4: Usually when you get traded, it's kind of like, all right,
- 2:44Speaker 4: thanks for your service, but we're gonna move on. But
- 2:46Speaker 4: like I said, even the conversations the day of the
- 2:49Speaker 4: trading deadline with Hayes and Amiel and all the front office,
- 2:53Speaker 4: it was kind of a conversation of like, hey, we
- 2:55Speaker 4: got to do this at the time. You know, your
- 2:57Speaker 4: values high and we got to get some pieces for you.
- 2:59Speaker 4: But I feel like I left it off with Hayes
- 3:01Speaker 4: saying that he'll be we'll be talking in a couple
- 3:03Speaker 4: of months, and they were definitely first in the ring.
- 3:07Speaker 5: What was it like for you in Texas?
- 3:10Speaker 4: Uh, Texas was cool. It actually worked out because my
- 3:13Speaker 4: mom and my brother live out there now. They live
- 3:14Speaker 4: in Allen, Texas, about fifteen minutes outside the city. So
- 3:17Speaker 4: it was nice being able to be coming from one
- 3:20Speaker 4: place that has family to the other place my other
- 3:23Speaker 4: half of the family is.
- 3:23Speaker 1: So it was actually pretty comfortable.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Did you learn any of Mike Maddox when you're out there? Yeah,
- 3:29Speaker 2: a short time.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Not too much.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Obviously, those times are limited, and I feel like when
- 3:33Speaker 4: you get traded to an ORG, it's kind of like, Hey,
- 3:35Speaker 4: we brought you here for a reason.
- 3:36Speaker 1: And we want you to Yeah, we want you to
- 3:39Speaker 1: do you and do what you do to get over here.
- 3:42Speaker 4: So the sample size was pretty small, and I feel
- 3:44Speaker 4: like at that point it was just kind of let's
- 3:46Speaker 4: bear down and try to get to the playoffs as
- 3:47Speaker 4: much as we can.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Hey, Meryl, you know Ken Rosenthal part of the the
- 3:52Speaker 5: ft network here. I saw that he said there might
- 3:56Speaker 5: have been a little bigger offer in terms of guaranteed
- 3:58Speaker 5: money from a from another tea T can you can
- 4:01Speaker 5: you speak to that at all? If there was another team,
- 4:03Speaker 5: I mean, hey, you're now locked in for two years.
- 4:06Speaker 5: Were you considering another ball club potentially in California and decided, Hey,
- 4:11Speaker 5: I've got my setup really nicely here. I've been with Arizona.
- 4:13Speaker 5: I've got the home in Arizona. Take us through that
- 4:16Speaker 5: part of the process.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think, first and foremost, going into the
- 4:20Speaker 4: off season, it was pretty clear, you know, I made
- 4:22Speaker 4: it pretty clear I wanted to be a diamondback my
- 4:24Speaker 4: whole big league career. Coming back here was always first
- 4:28Speaker 4: and foremost. It was always the priority. But yeah, there
- 4:31Speaker 4: was a team out in California. I think everybody can
- 4:34Speaker 4: pretty much figure out who that was. There was a
- 4:38Speaker 4: three year offer guaranteed on the table, but the numbers,
- 4:42Speaker 4: and like you said, the home situation with the family
- 4:45Speaker 4: and my kids getting older and school coming into play,
- 4:48Speaker 4: and you know, I don't think any it's any secret
- 4:52Speaker 4: on how much money you get taken out of your
- 4:53Speaker 4: pocket when you go to California. There was a lot
- 4:56Speaker 4: of factors that went into the three year deal. It
- 4:59Speaker 4: was definitely entice and it definitely made the decision a
- 5:01Speaker 4: lot harder to come back here. But once Arizona, once
- 5:04Speaker 4: these guys got to kind of the number that they did,
- 5:07Speaker 4: it just made a lot more sense to come back here.
- 5:11Speaker 6: Was that team. Does that team wear blue? That's all
- 5:14Speaker 6: I'm gonna ask.
- 5:14Speaker 4: That team doesn't that team does not wear blue red orange.
- 5:19Speaker 4: They're a little further south than the team. They're a
- 5:21Speaker 4: little further south than the team that wears blue. They're
- 5:23Speaker 4: a little closer to home. That's another reason why it
- 5:25Speaker 4: made it so such a challenging decision because living on uh,
- 5:29Speaker 4: living on Cornado, I feel here as a is a
- 5:32Speaker 4: pretty good question.
- 5:32Speaker 7: Sales Vagina, and.
- 5:37Speaker 4: That was like it worked out best for us because
- 5:39Speaker 4: that was honestly our second choice. It was between here
- 5:42Speaker 4: and San Diego going into the off season, though the
- 5:44Speaker 4: San Diego was like really the only place that if
- 5:47Speaker 4: we did go somewhere that was probably you know, high
- 5:49Speaker 4: on our list. If we weren't in Arizona, It's like,
- 5:51Speaker 4: all right, let's just hop over and take a short
- 5:53Speaker 4: six hour drive to San Diego. But yeah, the desert
- 5:58Speaker 4: is the desert is home. We're not I guess we're not
- 6:00Speaker 4: ocean people. We're more Desert Rats.
- 6:03Speaker 6: Meryl, you're the first person ever that's been offered a
- 6:05Speaker 6: bunch of money to go live in San Diego and said, no,
- 6:08Speaker 6: I think so. That's just let's just now, when you
- 6:11Speaker 6: pitch against them, they're gonna be like, oooh, you hate
- 6:14Speaker 6: San Diego.
- 6:15Speaker 7: He's such a bad guy san Diego.
- 6:18Speaker 4: No, I love San Diego. It's just like I said,
- 6:21Speaker 4: they take too much money out of my pocket.
- 6:23Speaker 8: Man.
- 6:23Speaker 4: The taxes over there are are a different level. We
- 6:27Speaker 4: had some numbers, guys run the number. No, we had
- 6:29Speaker 4: the we had my numbers, got to run the numbers,
- 6:30Speaker 4: and it just made more sense to come home, which
- 6:33Speaker 4: is crazy on a two year compared to a three year, right.
- 6:37Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, a three year if if it's lower AAV
- 6:40Speaker 5: and then you've got the huge tax difference.
- 6:42Speaker 9: You know.
- 6:42Speaker 5: We've actually explained that quite frequently on this show, just
- 6:45Speaker 5: to give some perspective to people.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Okay, and La Joya and La Joya ain't cheap, you know.
- 6:50Speaker 7: No, Yeah, you know you can live Inland, Hey, maryl.
- 6:56Speaker 4: To San Diego and live away from the beach. That's
- 6:58Speaker 4: what's the point of that. I might as well live
- 6:59Speaker 4: by with the scorpions.
- 7:01Speaker 3: It's a fair rebuttal.
- 7:03Speaker 7: He's the scorpion King.
- 7:04Speaker 5: Actually, you know what, So we spoke to Drake Jamison
- 7:06Speaker 5: earlier and he called you the change up Wizard. What
- 7:09Speaker 5: would be your number one tip to youngsters out there
- 7:13Speaker 5: trying to learn how to effectively use a change up
- 7:16Speaker 5: in their repertoire in you know, college or wherever. I mean,
- 7:20Speaker 5: we get a lot of young fans that listen and
- 7:22Speaker 5: love hearing these conversations. And I'm young players I should
- 7:24Speaker 5: say that are aspiring to be you.
- 7:28Speaker 4: That's high praise from from Dre because his heater is
- 7:31Speaker 4: on a different level.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I would say the biggest thing for me and the
- 7:34Speaker 1: change up is the arm speed.
- 7:37Speaker 4: You know, I think anytime you try to detract and
- 7:40Speaker 4: I've never been good at physically changing speeds, you know,
- 7:43Speaker 4: like mentally trying to subtract an ad speed, Like my
- 7:47Speaker 4: throw is just kind of my throw, It's just kind
- 7:49Speaker 4: of the way it comes out. Like That's why I
- 7:51Speaker 4: think if you look at my velocities, everything is very compact.
- 7:55Speaker 4: But I think I get away with that because everything
- 7:57Speaker 4: I try to make everything look the same. And I
- 8:00Speaker 4: think that would probably be the biggest tip for youngsters
- 8:02Speaker 4: is don't necessarily worry about the movement too much. I
- 8:07Speaker 4: think gravity in the mound and the grip.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Will do most of that.
- 8:12Speaker 4: But if I had to give one tip, it would
- 8:14Speaker 4: probably just be try to throw it the same as
- 8:16Speaker 4: your fastball. I feel like hitters. You know, you guys
- 8:19Speaker 4: can probably attest to this. If you saw a guy
- 8:21Speaker 4: with good arm speed and it looks the same as
- 8:22Speaker 4: a heater, even if it's not moving as much, your
- 8:26Speaker 4: timing is still going to be off because the way
- 8:27Speaker 4: it presents, the way it comes out of my hand,
- 8:29Speaker 4: and the way I let it go is going to
- 8:31Speaker 4: make it look more like a heater than anything else.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And I think when.
- 8:36Speaker 4: Guys try to slow up and are worried about the
- 8:38Speaker 4: speed differential, you know, some guys just got it. I
- 8:41Speaker 4: don't understand how guys throw ninety five mile an hour
- 8:43Speaker 4: fastballs and eighty four mile an hour changeups.
- 8:46Speaker 1: It doesn't make sense in my brain. Look at me,
- 8:50Speaker 1: But that's probably be My.
- 8:51Speaker 4: One tip is try to throw everything the same because
- 8:53Speaker 4: I think for the change up, the biggest thing is
- 8:56Speaker 4: the eye test. And when you try to start manipulating
- 8:59Speaker 4: the ball and try to start making it slower because
- 9:02Speaker 4: you're worried about seeing it move I think is when
- 9:05Speaker 4: a the hitters can pick up on it a lot
- 9:07Speaker 4: quicker and be the movement starts a lot earlier out
- 9:10Speaker 4: of the hand, which makes it easier to pick up
- 9:12Speaker 4: as well.
- 9:13Speaker 2: See when you said you're not good at just creating
- 9:16Speaker 2: the velocity change with your arm, that just means all
- 9:18Speaker 2: I heard is I can repeat my arm slot. That's
- 9:20Speaker 2: my throw every single time. First, staying on the change
- 9:23Speaker 2: of topic, what would you say is more important for
- 9:25Speaker 2: a young guy throwing worrying about the velocity change from
- 9:28Speaker 2: the fastball or the movement on the pitch.
- 9:30Speaker 3: How would you rank the two of importance.
- 9:34Speaker 1: I mean, obviously, movement is huge.
- 9:36Speaker 4: Everybody wants everybody's chasing the track man numbers on the separation.
- 9:41Speaker 4: For me, I would go a different direction and almost
- 9:43Speaker 4: say location great love for me. That's kind of how
- 9:48Speaker 4: I've always gotten by, you know. I think that's the
- 9:51Speaker 4: reason why I'm still able to do what I do
- 9:53Speaker 4: at thirty seven.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I think execution over everything love.
- 9:59Speaker 4: If this change isn't there, let's say, and the movement
- 10:02Speaker 4: isn't there, but I can put it exactly where I
- 10:04Speaker 4: want it to. Usually the outcome's gonna be all right.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Sometimes and by that it's like we can pick up
- 10:09Speaker 2: the pitch maybe and it's like, oh, I think it's
- 10:11Speaker 2: a change up. But if you put it right where,
- 10:12Speaker 2: it's like do I want to swing?
- 10:14Speaker 1: Do I not?
- 10:14Speaker 2: Do I have to reach out for it. That's where
- 10:16Speaker 2: location comes in for everything.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it makes you. I try to force you to
- 10:19Speaker 1: make a decision.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and we hate that.
- 10:21Speaker 6: Yeah, Hey, Meryl, how's your back?
- 10:26Speaker 7: Your schedule more than likely to be Opening day? Starter?
- 10:28Speaker 9: Right?
- 10:29Speaker 7: Are you still on track for that? Or where where
- 10:30Speaker 7: were we at?
- 10:31Speaker 4: I don't think so, you know, just with how many
- 10:35Speaker 4: days I've been down, you know, I just think I've
- 10:38Speaker 4: I've pushed things back too far. We've had a couple
- 10:40Speaker 4: of conversations, but I would guess that that's probably off
- 10:43Speaker 4: the table at this point. You know, even if I
- 10:45Speaker 4: woke up tomorrow and miraculously felt one hundred percent and
- 10:47Speaker 4: just could start ripping balls off the mound. I think
- 10:50Speaker 4: the fact that I've missed my second live bullpen and
- 10:52Speaker 4: I'm supposed to my first game was slotted for tomorrow, unfortunately,
- 10:57Speaker 4: I think Opening Day.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Is off the table.
- 10:59Speaker 4: But we at least a direction now I'm gonna get
- 11:03Speaker 4: some treatment today and see if that works. I've been told,
- 11:07Speaker 4: we've we've talked to a couple of guys. We've talked
- 11:09Speaker 4: to Meister, you know, doctor Meister out in Dallas. You know,
- 11:12Speaker 4: he's kind of the go to guy for things right now,
- 11:14Speaker 4: and we seem to have a pretty good direction. So
- 11:17Speaker 4: we're gonna try something today and hopefully that works. But
- 11:20Speaker 4: I think unfortunately, you know, off the as far as
- 11:23Speaker 4: opening day, I think I think we're kind of pushed
- 11:25Speaker 4: too far back at this point.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Okay, well, let me ask you something about this team,
- 11:30Speaker 5: because you know them quite well. I think many fans
- 11:34Speaker 5: forget that just a few short years ago the Diamondbacks
- 11:37Speaker 5: were in the World Series.
- 11:39Speaker 7: What do you think when you.
- 11:40Speaker 5: See, you know, or hear about so many people complaining
- 11:43Speaker 5: that only the big market teams have a shot. And
- 11:45Speaker 5: I'm not going to say that Arizona and Phoenix specifically
- 11:49Speaker 5: is a small market. But you know, a lot of
- 11:51Speaker 5: times we're looking at TV money. The Diamondbacks aren't pouring
- 11:54Speaker 5: in TV money right now. They're under the league's contract.
- 11:56Speaker 5: We don't have to get into the nitty gritty there.
- 11:58Speaker 5: The point is their revenue stream is not off the
- 12:01Speaker 5: charts yet, this team a few years ago made the
- 12:03Speaker 5: World Series. So when you hear fans say like, oh,
- 12:05Speaker 5: it's unfair, like only the same few teams can win,
- 12:08Speaker 5: did they forget how good you guys were a few
- 12:10Speaker 5: years ago?
- 12:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think it's easy to forget with
- 12:14Speaker 4: what the Dodgers have done the last couple of years, right,
- 12:17Speaker 4: and they continue to go out and spend money and
- 12:19Speaker 4: bring good players in.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Obviously they brought Kyle Tucker in this offseason.
- 12:23Speaker 4: You know, as a player, like, we love to see that, right,
- 12:25Speaker 4: Like we wish more teams would do what they're doing.
- 12:29Speaker 4: You know, I think that only breeds good things for
- 12:33Speaker 4: the game. But somebody said the other day, there's fifteen
- 12:36Speaker 4: guys on this roster right now that we're in that
- 12:38Speaker 4: World Series, run on that team. And I think every
- 12:42Speaker 4: team has a chance to win, right if they really
- 12:45Speaker 4: want to. And I think that comes along with if
- 12:47Speaker 4: you don't, if you're not going to spend the huge
- 12:49Speaker 4: amount of money. And you know, I got to hand
- 12:50Speaker 4: it to our guys. You know, they went out and
- 12:52Speaker 4: resigned me, They went and resigned Gallon obviously, not for
- 12:56Speaker 4: you know what I think he thought he was gonna
- 12:58Speaker 4: get But if you look at our payroll, it's definitely
- 13:00Speaker 4: not small compared to the rest of the league. Obviously,
- 13:03Speaker 4: nobody can really compete with the Dodger money that's going
- 13:06Speaker 4: on right now. But I think if you look at
- 13:08Speaker 4: our roster overall and the team that we were in
- 13:11Speaker 4: the World Series, I think, on paper were we're definitely
- 13:13Speaker 4: a better squad top to bottom than we were that year.
- 13:17Speaker 4: And I think with the additions as far as people
- 13:20Speaker 4: coming off the il sporadically throughout the year, right we'll
- 13:24Speaker 4: get Corbyn back, We'll get aj Puck back at some point,
- 13:26Speaker 4: and we'll get Justin Martinez some pretty heavy arms coming
- 13:29Speaker 4: out of the bullpen. I think we're in a really
- 13:32Speaker 4: good spot, and I think that a lot of teams
- 13:35Speaker 4: are a lot of I guess fans around the league
- 13:38Speaker 4: look at the Dodgers as the gold standard because you know,
- 13:41Speaker 4: obviously they've won two years in a row and they
- 13:42Speaker 4: continue to get better. But I think that's the beauty
- 13:45Speaker 4: of baseball. Anybody can beat anybody on any given day.
- 13:48Speaker 4: And I think when you know you hear stuff about
- 13:51Speaker 4: the playoffs, you know here you hear throughout the course
- 13:55Speaker 4: of the history of the league, it's like, oh, this
- 13:57Speaker 4: team got hot at the right at the right time.
- 13:59Speaker 4: And I think some teams or some fans look at
- 14:02Speaker 4: that as you weren't really that good of a team,
- 14:05Speaker 4: you just got hot. But I think that's the beauty
- 14:07Speaker 4: of baseball, is being able to play your best baseball
- 14:10Speaker 4: when it actually matters.
- 14:12Speaker 10: You know.
- 14:12Speaker 4: The Dodgers have been fortunate where they can do that
- 14:14Speaker 4: kind of throughout the year. But I think at this point,
- 14:16Speaker 4: when you get into the playoffs, especially with where the
- 14:18Speaker 4: way the playoffs are structured now, I think it's anybody's game.
- 14:23Speaker 7: Agreed, agreed, that's the whole team. That's most teams mantra.
- 14:26Speaker 7: Even though I hated to just get in. You never
- 14:28Speaker 7: know what can happen. So yeah, I don't know.
- 14:30Speaker 8: All right.
- 14:30Speaker 6: So you played in the WBC in twenty three, right,
- 14:34Speaker 6: obviously you're injured this year. You couldn't do it this year.
- 14:36Speaker 6: You want a championship with the in the KBO, if
- 14:40Speaker 6: technically could you play for Korea because you have a
- 14:43Speaker 6: ring from Korea, would they elect you play for Team Korea.
- 14:47Speaker 8: I doubt it. I would if I asked, but I
- 14:49Speaker 8: doubt it.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I think you got to have something.
- 14:52Speaker 4: I think you gotta have some sort of lineage, and
- 14:54Speaker 4: just looking at me, I'm pretty sure I don't have
- 14:56Speaker 4: any agent in me.
- 14:57Speaker 8: But I will ask me.
- 15:01Speaker 4: I think it'd be a I think it'd be a blast,
- 15:02Speaker 4: eat some kimchi and and go over to Korea and
- 15:05Speaker 4: have some fun. I would do it, but I don't
- 15:06Speaker 4: think I'm in the I don't think I'm in the
- 15:08Speaker 4: running for that.
- 15:09Speaker 7: Okay, I don't know.
- 15:10Speaker 6: If you could just flash your ring from the KBO
- 15:11Speaker 6: series and say, look, guys, I got this ring.
- 15:13Speaker 7: You know I have won championships for you before, so
- 15:16Speaker 7: let me be on the team. I don't know. Get
- 15:18Speaker 7: citizenship quick, Yeah.
- 15:19Speaker 6: It gets quick? Citizenship, Yeah, I don't know. All right,
- 15:22Speaker 6: last one before we let you go, and we need
- 15:24Speaker 6: I need the four box here because I need Kip
- 15:26Speaker 6: on for this. So I didn't realize this. No, we
- 15:30Speaker 6: got it the two box right here, so I can
- 15:32Speaker 6: see all of you and Kip sitting next to you.
- 15:35Speaker 6: Do you are you going to rub it into Kip
- 15:37Speaker 6: that you graduated, you left Arizona State a year after him,
- 15:40Speaker 6: and you're still playing on a two year deal and
- 15:43Speaker 6: Kip's been retired for like seven years now, so you're
- 15:46Speaker 6: just gonna rub it in his face that you're just
- 15:48Speaker 6: the better Arizona State alumni.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Oh that's tough.
- 15:52Speaker 4: And you said graduated. I definitely didn't graduate. Uh well,
- 15:54Speaker 4: you know what heat graduate.
- 15:57Speaker 7: He's been to retire for six years now, So.
- 16:00Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, I'm I'm lucky man. I'm also a
- 16:03Speaker 4: pitcher too, and I you know, like I said, I locate.
- 16:06Speaker 4: So if I didn't locate, I'd probably be out of
- 16:07Speaker 4: the game by now, throwing ninety miles an hour as alrighty, but.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Don't let me take don't let AJ divide us right now.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Watching this guy, yeah, this is what he does. No,
- 16:18Speaker 2: watching this guy go over to Korea and then come
- 16:20Speaker 2: back and put together a career for this long and
- 16:25Speaker 2: this solid has actually been one of just for me,
- 16:28Speaker 2: one of the more fun guys that I get to watch.
- 16:30Speaker 5: That.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I was like, I know him, I know where he's
- 16:32Speaker 2: come from, I know where he started, what he's been through.
- 16:34Speaker 2: I love that he's easy to root for. So no, AJ,
- 16:37Speaker 2: you are not gonna split up the Sun Devil. Yeah,
- 16:39Speaker 2: no chance, but we root for each other.
- 16:40Speaker 7: You have like a special handshake with your little thing.
- 16:42Speaker 7: You little whatever.
- 16:44Speaker 2: See see get him all out right now, just get
- 16:47Speaker 2: him all out of you.
- 16:47Speaker 7: I don't know, do you guys like? Do you guys like.
- 16:50Speaker 5: I got something for you?
- 16:51Speaker 7: He didn't.
- 16:51Speaker 5: He also played at Yabapai.
- 16:52Speaker 7: He didn't just do.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna say I.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Was only at ASU for a year. I think people
- 16:58Speaker 4: get it twisted away bit that I that I like
- 17:01Speaker 4: was I had two years? Yeah, he at least had
- 17:02Speaker 4: two years. I was only there for one, even though
- 17:05Speaker 4: we did make it to the World Series when I
- 17:07Speaker 4: was there about true, we also got it.
- 17:09Speaker 1: We also got smacked.
- 17:10Speaker 6: So we went open to wait, did Murph coach both
- 17:16Speaker 6: of y'all?
- 17:18Speaker 3: Uh?
- 17:18Speaker 1: So Murph recruited me?
- 17:19Speaker 4: That was the year that Murph resigned how much?
- 17:25Speaker 7: Not paying you?
- 17:27Speaker 1: How much?
- 17:29Speaker 3: This is what he does?
- 17:30Speaker 6: Yeah, I just got every time, hey, listen, every time
- 17:37Speaker 6: I see Murph, Murph says, you know I didn't recruit you, right,
- 17:39Speaker 6: And I'm like, I know, Murphy, You've told me every
- 17:41Speaker 6: time I see that you did not recruit me.
- 17:44Speaker 7: Okay, I get it, and like.
- 17:46Speaker 4: But I got I got nothing. I got nothing for
- 17:48Speaker 4: love for Murph agreed.
- 17:50Speaker 5: He's a rich man managing a good team.
- 17:53Speaker 10: These days that I.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Always knew he was going to be. I always knew
- 17:57Speaker 1: he was going to be a manager.
- 17:57Speaker 4: But to see what he's done over there and and
- 18:00Speaker 4: in Milwaukee, it's pretty cool.
- 18:02Speaker 5: Yeah, he's got something good going there. Well, Marilyn, this
- 18:04Speaker 5: was awesome and really appreciate it, enjoyed it. Congrats on
- 18:09Speaker 5: the contract in the off season. Then good luck this year.
- 18:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 18:11Speaker 5: Excited to see the Diamondbacks make some noise.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I appreciate you.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Guys.
- 18:15Speaker 2: We got the handsome devil Paul Seawalt here coming in
- 18:18Speaker 2: just through a bullpen, and it's nice enough to join
- 18:20Speaker 2: us right now.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Hey, what's up, Paul?
- 18:22Speaker 7: How was the bullpen?
- 18:24Speaker 8: It was good? It was good.
- 18:25Speaker 11: We're out here just already got the Arizona sunshine going.
- 18:28Speaker 11: It's already hot, but it's good.
- 18:30Speaker 8: It's good. Camps for good. It's uh.
- 18:32Speaker 11: I got to skip a couple of the days that
- 18:33Speaker 11: you know, we shouldn't be here anyway, so that worked.
- 18:35Speaker 8: Out just fine.
- 18:37Speaker 10: There you go.
- 18:38Speaker 7: What was it eighty eight cutters? Were were we working
- 18:40Speaker 7: on to eighty eight high cutters? The low armslot. The
- 18:43Speaker 7: high cutter.
- 18:44Speaker 11: Plays like it's cutting. Look they think it's supposed to
- 18:46Speaker 11: be sinking. I don't even know what it does. I
- 18:48Speaker 11: just try to get out. I just try to confuse
- 18:49Speaker 11: him enough until they look back and can't figure out
- 18:52Speaker 11: what happened.
- 18:52Speaker 3: They can't know what it does if I don't exactly
- 18:54Speaker 3: that's exactly.
- 18:57Speaker 5: Hey, Paul, I want to ask you a question that
- 18:59Speaker 5: I just relayed over to Merrill Kelly. Do you feel
- 19:02Speaker 5: like people forgot the Diamondbacks made the World Series in
- 19:05Speaker 5: twenty twenty three. There are a lot of the same
- 19:07Speaker 5: names from that team back then. I mean, of course
- 19:10Speaker 5: you were a part of that run. And there's so
- 19:14Speaker 5: much talk about how it's unfair for the rest of
- 19:16Speaker 5: the league. You know, only the big market teams have
- 19:19Speaker 5: a chance, and I am putting the Diamondbacks more in
- 19:21Speaker 5: the mid to even maybe a little bit behind that range,
- 19:24Speaker 5: because a lot of it's looking at TV money, not
- 19:26Speaker 5: TV market, and they don't make a lot TV money wise.
- 19:29Speaker 7: It's a fact.
- 19:30Speaker 5: So your thoughts when people say it's so unfair and
- 19:33Speaker 5: your team smacked the Dodgers a couple of years ago.
- 19:36Speaker 11: Three years in baseball feels like an eternity, right, It's
- 19:39Speaker 11: like twenty twenty three year almost like I forgot that.
- 19:41Speaker 11: I forgot about that World Series and we're talking about
- 19:43Speaker 11: literally just two seasons ago. But you know, they were
- 19:48Speaker 11: one strike away from the Blue Jays winning last year,
- 19:50Speaker 11: and I thought, I mean, I thought the Padres were
- 19:53Speaker 11: better than them in twenty four when we played them,
- 19:55Speaker 11: you know, back to back at the at the end
- 19:56Speaker 11: of the year and they were on the rope. So
- 19:59Speaker 11: just you know, they made the pitches and made the
- 20:00Speaker 11: place when they had to at the end and kind
- 20:02Speaker 11: of wanted back to back World Series. But I mean
- 20:04Speaker 11: that margin for air is razor thin, so for people
- 20:06Speaker 11: to think that like this a foregone conclusion. Andrew Freeman
- 20:10Speaker 11: obviously thought that they needed to improve. That's why he
- 20:12Speaker 11: signed Kyle Tucker. That's why he signed Edwin Diez. I
- 20:14Speaker 11: mean he he felt like, I gotta make sure that
- 20:17Speaker 11: I improved the team or the rest of the league's
- 20:18Speaker 11: catching up to us. So people just like to complain
- 20:20Speaker 11: about things on the internet. And that's more. That's more
- 20:23Speaker 11: what it is than anything.
- 20:24Speaker 8: Have you ever heard of control, You ever had an
- 20:27Speaker 8: inter control?
- 20:27Speaker 11: I mean, people just like to complain about things, and
- 20:31Speaker 11: you know they're in our division, so certainly they're gonna
- 20:33Speaker 11: be a challenge for us. And and but twenty three
- 20:35Speaker 11: showed more than anything, they were maybe the best team
- 20:37Speaker 11: in the league. And you know, in a small sample
- 20:40Speaker 11: size like a like a postseason series, you just never
- 20:42Speaker 11: know what's gonna happen.
- 20:43Speaker 8: So that's why we're gonna play the games this year.
- 20:45Speaker 11: We're not gonna just uh, We're not gonna use Pakoda
- 20:47Speaker 11: standings to uh to decide the World Series champion. We're
- 20:50Speaker 11: gonna go out there and we're gonna play one six
- 20:51Speaker 11: to two and then hopefully we get a couple of
- 20:53Speaker 11: playoff games.
- 20:54Speaker 3: I like that. Now.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Now, obviously you're being familiar with them from playing with
- 20:57Speaker 2: them in twenty twenty three. How much of that factor
- 20:59Speaker 2: into you with them? And did they discuss it all
- 21:02Speaker 2: roles yet, because we know they have some injuries going
- 21:04Speaker 2: into it.
- 21:04Speaker 3: What have they talked to you about so far?
- 21:05Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean we moved here, so this is home now,
- 21:07Speaker 11: so it obviously had an impact. You know, we had
- 21:10Speaker 11: some offers that were all very similar. And when you
- 21:12Speaker 11: start talking about you know a little bit here and there,
- 21:16Speaker 11: staying at home is really important. And for me, the
- 21:17Speaker 11: most important thing is I have to go out there,
- 21:19Speaker 11: and I have to be healthy, and I have to
- 21:20Speaker 11: pitch healthy, right. I got to go out there and
- 21:22Speaker 11: I got to pitch fifty times this year. So for me,
- 21:24Speaker 11: it was like, what's the best opportunity for me to
- 21:26Speaker 11: do that. I think my own bed is is a
- 21:28Speaker 11: pretty high factor. So and I had amazing memories. My
- 21:33Speaker 11: favorite baseball memory I've ever had was winning the National
- 21:35Speaker 11: League Championship and that was in a Diamondbacks uniform. So
- 21:38Speaker 11: that's that's going to stick with me the rest of
- 21:39Speaker 11: my life. And so that that obviously had a little
- 21:42Speaker 11: bit of bias in this decision.
- 21:43Speaker 8: But I'm super excited to be back here.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Roles.
- 21:46Speaker 11: You know, I'm here to pitch whenever they tell me
- 21:49Speaker 11: to pitch. Yeah, you know, is that going to be late?
- 21:51Speaker 8: Maybe? Is it going to be early? It could be.
- 21:53Speaker 11: It's depending on how I throw the ball and how
- 21:55Speaker 11: other guys throw the ball. And you know, Aj and
- 21:57Speaker 11: Justin are not going to be back at the beginning
- 21:58Speaker 11: of the year. Who would be our best two best relievers,
- 22:01Speaker 11: So everyone's gonna have to step up and outperform themselves
- 22:04Speaker 11: a little bit until we get those guys back.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Either way, that's always the best mentality, and You've always
- 22:08Speaker 2: been that throughout your career that the best ability is availability.
- 22:11Speaker 2: I want to be available and I'm here with whatever
- 22:13Speaker 2: you guys need me, So I'm not demanding a role.
- 22:14Speaker 2: I think that type of guys like you are needed
- 22:17Speaker 2: on every single roster, not only because how good you are,
- 22:19Speaker 2: but just the way that you approach the game and
- 22:21Speaker 2: the way that you're willing to do whatever.
- 22:22Speaker 3: It takes, I think is a huge part.
- 22:25Speaker 11: And it you know, it could be a maybe I'm
- 22:28Speaker 11: a better matchup in the seventh inning versus the guys
- 22:29Speaker 11: they throw, then I would be in the eighth or
- 22:31Speaker 11: ninth where Thompson or Gink would be like, we're here
- 22:34Speaker 11: to win games, so I mean, we're gonna do whatever
- 22:36Speaker 11: we can to win those games. And and Torri and
- 22:38Speaker 11: Mike have kind of explained that to me that they're
- 22:41Speaker 11: you know, you don't have a role right now. It's
- 22:42Speaker 11: you're gonna go out there and you're gonna pitch. You
- 22:44Speaker 11: know you're gonna pitch, and we hope you get out
- 22:47Speaker 11: to when we get out there, so they need, we
- 22:49Speaker 11: know they need. We'll have aj justin back soon enough,
- 22:52Speaker 11: and that'll that'll be nice.
- 22:55Speaker 6: Hey, Paul, I haven't gone anywhere so quick. Saying I'm
- 22:57Speaker 6: gonna be back. Okay, I haven't gone anywhere. I'll be
- 22:59Speaker 6: ready for the opening season, all right. So let's just
- 23:01Speaker 6: you have to clarify on this show, Paul, because there's
- 23:04Speaker 6: too many AJ's in baseball and now, so you have
- 23:05Speaker 6: to call him puck, okay, not not agent, because then
- 23:08Speaker 6: I get all confused. I get all ramped up for
- 23:10Speaker 6: opening Day, like I'm gonna be out there, but I'm not.
- 23:13Speaker 8: I heard you had different nicknames when you were playing.
- 23:16Speaker 7: Yes, exactly, but that's fine. We all have to be
- 23:19Speaker 7: called something by our family.
- 23:20Speaker 3: It's okay.
- 23:23Speaker 6: When I told this story the other day on here,
- 23:27Speaker 6: and I hate to go back to this, but when
- 23:30Speaker 6: I saw you, you were in Detroit at the end
- 23:31Speaker 6: of last year, and I saw you in Seattle for
- 23:34Speaker 6: the for the postseason run, and you big lead me
- 23:38Speaker 6: and you walk past me, and I tried to say
- 23:39Speaker 6: hi to you. But guys, then you came back like
- 23:44Speaker 6: ten minutes later and apologized and you said, hey, I
- 23:47Speaker 6: just found out I wasn't gonna be on the roster.
- 23:49Speaker 6: I just wanted to say that I'm not bigger than you.
- 23:52Speaker 6: So I told that story, and I just want to
- 23:54Speaker 6: say thank you.
- 23:54Speaker 7: That was it.
- 23:55Speaker 6: I want to say thank you. You didn't have to do that.
- 23:57Speaker 6: I totally understood. I've been there, but I just want
- 23:59Speaker 6: to say to me, that was big league of you
- 24:02Speaker 6: to come up to me and say hey, I'm sorry
- 24:04Speaker 6: I didn't say hi, and listen, I got it. I understood,
- 24:07Speaker 6: or for you to come back man, thumbs up for me.
- 24:10Speaker 11: This guy I have my meeting with AJ's like, you
- 24:14Speaker 11: don't really look healthy. You know, we're not going to
- 24:16Speaker 11: go with you. You know I wasn't one hundred percent healthy.
- 24:18Speaker 11: I totally understand the whole perspective. I get the news
- 24:21Speaker 11: I walked past him. That's tough news to get right away,
- 24:24Speaker 11: right and he's like, oh, you're not going to say hi.
- 24:27Speaker 11: I apologize, ag. You were not at the top of
- 24:30Speaker 11: my mind at that moment. But I did make sure
- 24:32Speaker 11: to come back and say hello, and I did make
- 24:34Speaker 11: sure you knew the situation. You are correct, But foul
- 24:36Speaker 11: Territory guys, I wouldn't leave you hanging. It was just
- 24:39Speaker 11: a difficult three minutes of my time.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Fal Territory is actually just a front for AJ to
- 24:44Speaker 2: confront everybody that's big tim before we just talk other
- 24:47Speaker 2: things until we get to the guests that he can confront.
- 24:50Speaker 6: Dude, I told you, I told you two thumbs up
- 24:52Speaker 6: man for you coming back. I didn't know at the time,
- 24:56Speaker 6: and so then when you came back and explained it, listen,
- 24:58Speaker 6: you didn't have to say anything to me. I'll never
- 25:00Speaker 6: be mad at you for it. It's just more to
- 25:02Speaker 6: be able to talk a little shit. I mean, you
- 25:04Speaker 6: know you know it is.
- 25:05Speaker 7: I mean, trust me. I was in that Tigers clubhouse.
- 25:07Speaker 6: Yeah, I was in that Tiger's clubhouse for three three
- 25:10Speaker 6: games obviously for five days, but in Seattle, and I
- 25:13Speaker 6: heard Tommy Kinley get worn out because college football was on.
- 25:17Speaker 6: They wore him out for like the whole time. I
- 25:20Speaker 6: was standing in there about Notre Dame and about this
- 25:22Speaker 6: and about it was like, poor Tommy Kinley, I can
- 25:26Speaker 6: take it.
- 25:26Speaker 8: I mean, had your.
- 25:28Speaker 11: Irish jersey, you know, Irish shorts, and your Irish socks
- 25:30Speaker 11: and your Irish under armour shoots and they go, oh
- 25:32Speaker 11: in two in the first two games.
- 25:34Speaker 8: You deserve everything that comes.
- 25:35Speaker 10: Your way, thank you.
- 25:37Speaker 6: And he had his Eagles. The Eagles and the Irish
- 25:39Speaker 6: lost like the same weekend. So these guys were just
- 25:41Speaker 6: where I'm sorry yeah, it's.
- 25:43Speaker 5: Great cry babies during football season this year we can
- 25:48Speaker 5: That's one topic I can go all day on as
- 25:50Speaker 5: mister Miami. Okay, I want to get your thoughts on
- 25:52Speaker 5: a couple of league uh issues, or I would say
- 25:55Speaker 5: rule changes coming up here. So here's two the coaches
- 25:59Speaker 5: in the box rule and then we'll go to ABS
- 26:02Speaker 5: challenge system. So first off, coaches in the box rule
- 26:04Speaker 5: and the tipping paranoia that is taking over baseball with
- 26:08Speaker 5: AI incorporated. So your thoughts on that, I thought. I mean,
- 26:12Speaker 5: some guys are like, it's whatever, it's been going on forever.
- 26:15Speaker 5: Then Vinnie Pasporentino was on with us when we were
- 26:17Speaker 5: at Royals camp and he's like, hey, you ever see
- 26:19Speaker 5: some of the base coaches just not doing anything during
- 26:22Speaker 5: the game, like no signs, not talking to anybody on
- 26:24Speaker 5: the basis they're busy.
- 26:27Speaker 11: Yes, nobody, nobody comes to the field and doesn't do anything.
- 26:30Speaker 11: I think it's low key. If you're doing nothing, then
- 26:32Speaker 11: you're doing something you shouldn't be doing. You know, the
- 26:34Speaker 11: coaches boxes are there for a reason, and you know
- 26:38Speaker 11: the pitch tipping thing is the most important thing as
- 26:40Speaker 11: a pitcher you can worry about. I can do all
- 26:42Speaker 11: this stuff on track man, bullpens, I can do all
- 26:44Speaker 11: this work if the hitter knows what's coming. It doesn't
- 26:46Speaker 11: really do me any good to make my stuff extra nasty. So,
- 26:49Speaker 11: you know, if they can pick something up in the game,
- 26:52Speaker 11: I feel like that's pretty fair. You're talking about AI,
- 26:54Speaker 11: you know, doing one thousand models a second to try
- 26:57Speaker 11: to figure out if I did something different. I'm not
- 26:59Speaker 11: sure that that's totally appropriate, but you know, it's just
- 27:03Speaker 11: kind of the world we live in, and you just
- 27:04Speaker 11: have to make sure that you are indistinguishable at any
- 27:07Speaker 11: moment while you're out there. And I try to think
- 27:09Speaker 11: that I do everything off and not consistent. Anyway, if
- 27:13Speaker 11: I'm inconsistently consistent, then I think it can help my
- 27:16Speaker 11: chances that they can't pick something up. But you know,
- 27:19Speaker 11: the coaches boxes are there for a reason. I don't
- 27:21Speaker 11: really want them down the right field line trying to
- 27:23Speaker 11: look in my hand or down the left field line.
- 27:25Speaker 11: So we're just trying to keep things fair and make
- 27:27Speaker 11: sure that you know, if I'm tipping then they can
- 27:29Speaker 11: find it from there.
- 27:30Speaker 8: That's fine, but.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Let's try to say within the rules of that sort
- 27:33Speaker 2: of situation. Then for the other rule change, we've got
- 27:35Speaker 2: the ABS system. Thoughts on that, do you think that's
- 27:38Speaker 2: gonna go? Well, what problems do you see kind of
- 27:40Speaker 2: arising from that? Maybe early on in the league that
- 27:42Speaker 2: might get settled on as a season progresses.
- 27:44Speaker 11: Yeah, you and age earned a different strike zone at
- 27:47Speaker 11: the end of your career then you had at the
- 27:49Speaker 11: beginning of your career. It's a little devastating for me
- 27:51Speaker 11: to have earned that new strike zone and then have
- 27:53Speaker 11: it taken away at the very end. The strike zone
- 27:57Speaker 11: is a strike zone. It's supposed to be consistent. I
- 28:00Speaker 11: think our umpires today are better than they've ever been,
- 28:03Speaker 11: especially the guys that are coming up. They've worked really
- 28:05Speaker 11: hard to get to that point. I saw one the
- 28:08Speaker 11: other day less than a tenth of an inch. Yeah,
- 28:12Speaker 11: that seems a little bit fine to me to call
- 28:15Speaker 11: out an umpire. I think the most important thing for
- 28:17Speaker 11: me the whole time was somebody sitting on their couch
- 28:20Speaker 11: watching a game and having the screen or having the
- 28:23Speaker 11: box up there, and if they're able to say umpire,
- 28:26Speaker 11: A that's a terrible call. When it's like, look at
- 28:30Speaker 11: ninety five min our pitch that's moving and you're missing
- 28:32Speaker 11: by a tenth of an inch. I kind of want
- 28:35Speaker 11: to give some umpires some grace on that situation. But
- 28:37Speaker 11: when it's literally black or white, filled in or clear,
- 28:40Speaker 11: you know that guy at home shouldn't know whether the
- 28:43Speaker 11: umpire missed that car or not. If they can tell
- 28:45Speaker 11: without the box agregious call, that's what that's really what
- 28:49Speaker 11: we're looking for. It'll be interesting to see the challenge system.
- 28:52Speaker 11: We have as an organization, our plan for the challenge
- 28:55Speaker 11: system in in spring training to kind of give it
- 28:57Speaker 11: a ride. But six seven weeks is tough. I think
- 28:59Speaker 11: we're need a couple months to try to figure out
- 29:01Speaker 11: how that's gonna work.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Sure, and I do like the fact that you just
- 29:03Speaker 2: said umpires are about as good as they've ever been
- 29:05Speaker 2: in this game. They're always trying to get better. I
- 29:08Speaker 2: think it's gonna be twofold. I like hearing that. I
- 29:10Speaker 2: like you got to give the umpire's credit when they
- 29:12Speaker 2: do have good games, and you gotta let them know
- 29:14Speaker 2: that they are. Hey, you might have missed that one,
- 29:16Speaker 2: or I understand why you missed that one that was closed.
- 29:17Speaker 2: I'd go either way. I think there is gonna be
- 29:20Speaker 2: some good adjustment period for them as well. I think
- 29:22Speaker 2: they're gonna there is gonna be not a shame factor
- 29:25Speaker 2: to it or something. But if you keep getting second
- 29:28Speaker 2: guest or overruled, and you keep finding out that you're
- 29:30Speaker 2: getting it wrong, I think there comes this in game
- 29:32Speaker 2: adjustment now where it's like, hey, maybe I need to
- 29:35Speaker 2: fix my zone. And that's kind of we're all we're
- 29:37Speaker 2: all just trying to get it right, and it's not
- 29:39Speaker 2: the easiest thing to do by any means. But at
- 29:41Speaker 2: the end of the day, as long as long as
- 29:42Speaker 2: that's the focus of the hitter, catcher and the umpire,
- 29:45Speaker 2: that we're just trying to get it right, you should
- 29:47Speaker 2: be able to find some kind of middle ground between
- 29:49Speaker 2: all three, which is a good point.
- 29:50Speaker 11: I hadn't thought about the in game adjustment for a numpire.
- 29:52Speaker 11: Everyone knows the first couple of innings, you're like, look, man,
- 29:54Speaker 11: I went back and checked. Those are balls, let's go like,
- 29:57Speaker 11: or those are strikes. Come on, let's get it together.
- 30:00Speaker 11: Kind of having that feedback maybe in the first readings
- 30:02Speaker 11: to try to, you know, get correct for the last
- 30:05Speaker 11: the last six is going to be important.
- 30:06Speaker 8: I hadn't thought about that.
- 30:07Speaker 2: That's that's good now, you guys probably just covered both
- 30:10Speaker 2: of these in the players meeting that you guys had
- 30:11Speaker 2: this morning. When you have a important meeting like such
- 30:15Speaker 2: where I'm sure you covered a big ground of topics,
- 30:18Speaker 2: especially with stuff that's going on, but you cover these
- 30:19Speaker 2: new rules. How much do you look at some of
- 30:22Speaker 2: the younger players and younger pitchers on the staff, if
- 30:24Speaker 2: they're engaged in the meeting. Do they understand what's going on?
- 30:27Speaker 2: Do they understand the changes that are being made.
- 30:29Speaker 11: I think it's really intimidating for a younger guy to
- 30:31Speaker 11: participate in those meetings. And I can't blame them. I
- 30:33Speaker 11: you know, I wasn't one to participate in those meetings
- 30:35Speaker 11: at that age. I think for me, it's more asking
- 30:37Speaker 11: these triple A guys what the challenge system looks like,
- 30:40Speaker 11: what that ABS looks like.
- 30:42Speaker 3: They might know more than you.
- 30:42Speaker 11: They have a lot more, They have a lot more
- 30:44Speaker 11: understanding of what that looks like than me. I have
- 30:46Speaker 11: thrown in our four or five games in rehab games
- 30:50Speaker 11: with that ABS. I don't know what that looks like.
- 30:52Speaker 11: For me, it's like, you guys know what that is
- 30:54Speaker 11: supposed to look like? Like, let's talk about you know
- 30:57Speaker 11: what kind of what kind of pitches. Are you seeing
- 30:59Speaker 11: that maybe cross that they call strikes or that that
- 31:02Speaker 11: we miss and we can kind of try to figure
- 31:03Speaker 11: that out. That's not going to change how I throw pitches,
- 31:06Speaker 11: but just kind of having a general understanding of how
- 31:08Speaker 11: that's maybe gonna work, or the catchers talking to other
- 31:11Speaker 11: catchers of like, hey, this is what I've really succeeded
- 31:13Speaker 11: in my challenges versus you know, stuff that I've missed.
- 31:17Speaker 3: Thanks fair Paul.
- 31:19Speaker 6: Before we let you go, I just go, I want
- 31:20Speaker 6: to know, how's the golf game? You're in Arizona, a spring.
- 31:25Speaker 6: You know, you throw a hard bullpen today. You know
- 31:27Speaker 6: it's noon there, where's the teeth time? And how's the
- 31:31Speaker 6: golf game?
- 31:32Speaker 11: Well, you know you just had Merril Kelly on he's
- 31:34Speaker 11: having a little side tightness thing. That's my golfing partner.
- 31:37Speaker 11: So the golfing game has been a little limited at
- 31:38Speaker 11: this point. But you know, we're just trying to get
- 31:41Speaker 11: back in there, make sure we can throw in games.
- 31:42Speaker 11: But uh, it's a long season. You got a little
- 31:44Speaker 11: bit of time to play. We got a little bit.
- 31:46Speaker 8: You know, it's nice here.
- 31:47Speaker 11: We probably have to make the most of the next
- 31:49Speaker 11: two months because it won't be so great towards the
- 31:50Speaker 11: middle of the year. But uh, you know, I moved here,
- 31:53Speaker 11: so now it's not really an issue. It's kind of
- 31:54Speaker 11: one of those things where I've gotten plenty of Arizona golf.
- 31:56Speaker 11: But we'll we got some road t toops, We've got
- 31:58Speaker 11: some off days.
- 31:58Speaker 8: We'll be just fine.
- 31:59Speaker 11: You know.
- 32:00Speaker 8: Well, you know, I'll find a place to play. You know,
- 32:01Speaker 8: I don't. I don't have a problem with that.
- 32:03Speaker 2: That blood will fin out, You'll get used a little
- 32:04Speaker 2: bit more and be able to play into bows more conditions.
- 32:08Speaker 5: Well, he's got daddy duty too, right for the FAM's there, right.
- 32:13Speaker 8: That's true.
- 32:13Speaker 11: I mean you got two of them at this point,
- 32:15Speaker 11: got to get the second one into into school pre
- 32:18Speaker 11: k and then it's really just gonna just take off,
- 32:20Speaker 11: just drop them off and head right up, uh to
- 32:23Speaker 11: play in the morning, pick them up on the way back.
- 32:25Speaker 8: Mama's free. Like it's totally good.
- 32:27Speaker 5: Yes, that's the good stuff, Paul. We always really enjoy this.
- 32:30Speaker 5: Good to see you, and good luck. The rest of
- 32:34Speaker 5: camp here will catch you during the season, of course.
- 32:35Speaker 5: All right, thanks for me on guys, we've got Ryan
- 32:38Speaker 5: wald Schmitt joining us.
- 32:39Speaker 8: Ryan.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Great to have you on the show. Really appreciate the time,
- 32:42Speaker 5: want to get into your story and some Florida roots.
- 32:44Speaker 5: So you're gonna make the guy sitting next to me
- 32:46Speaker 5: very happy. But before all that, house camp and tell
- 32:49Speaker 5: us about your chances of cutting it with the big
- 32:51Speaker 5: league team here.
- 32:53Speaker 9: Oh yeah, you know, camp's been great so far, really
- 32:56Speaker 9: getting to know the guys, getting a lot more comfortable
- 32:59Speaker 9: around everyone. You know, early on you're you're the new
- 33:01Speaker 9: guy around the clubhouse and get to know everyone. You're
- 33:05Speaker 9: a little nervous at first, but you know, we're a
- 33:07Speaker 9: weekend now and I feel like I'm getting along with
- 33:09Speaker 9: everyone very well, and.
- 33:11Speaker 10: Everything's getting more comfortable.
- 33:13Speaker 9: The games are getting more comfortable, getting more comfortable at
- 33:15Speaker 9: to play in the field, and you know, I try
- 33:18Speaker 9: to think about too much about the chances of making
- 33:21Speaker 9: the team. You know, I kind of just go out
- 33:22Speaker 9: there every day and and play hard and play aggressive
- 33:25Speaker 9: and just see what happens. And that's something out of
- 33:28Speaker 9: my control, so I just try and keep my mind
- 33:30Speaker 9: off of it and just do what it takes to
- 33:32Speaker 9: help the team win and see what happens at the
- 33:34Speaker 9: end of the day.
- 33:35Speaker 6: Ryan as as a young guy in camp, has anyone
- 33:38Speaker 6: been mean to you, Has anyone been just so.
- 33:41Speaker 7: Mean to you and treated you poorly?
- 33:44Speaker 9: Because we can fly aj in if you need not
- 33:47Speaker 9: yet not yet, I have not had any any altercations
- 33:52Speaker 9: here at camp so far. Everyone's been very friendly and
- 33:56Speaker 9: taking me in with open arms, So I'm very grateful
- 33:58Speaker 9: for that.
- 33:59Speaker 7: Do you know everyone's name? Do you know everybody?
- 34:01Speaker 1: To do? Eat in the clubhouse?
- 34:03Speaker 6: Guys, the trainers, the travelings, the director of team Travey
- 34:08Speaker 6: can't call him the traveling secretary anymore.
- 34:10Speaker 9: Of course, I make that emphasis of trying to make
- 34:13Speaker 9: sure I know everyone's name, and and in the mornings
- 34:16Speaker 9: when I walk in, I try and greet everyone that
- 34:17Speaker 9: I walk past. It's just something little that that can
- 34:21Speaker 9: make everyone's day, and and it means a lot at
- 34:23Speaker 9: the end of the day if you know someone's name
- 34:25Speaker 9: and you're able to hold a conversation with them daily.
- 34:27Speaker 9: And I think that just means a lot to me
- 34:29Speaker 9: as a person, not even as a player or just
- 34:32Speaker 9: in general being around the facility, just as a person.
- 34:34Speaker 10: I take pride in just.
- 34:35Speaker 9: Kind of getting to know everyone around me and just
- 34:38Speaker 9: being able to have conversations with them.
- 34:41Speaker 6: Okay, do me a favorite turnaround and just wave to
- 34:43Speaker 6: Corbin for me. He's behind you running, so just wave
- 34:45Speaker 6: to say hi Corban.
- 34:47Speaker 7: When he runs. Exactly. But you want to know what
- 34:53Speaker 7: that is.
- 34:54Speaker 6: You want to know why you're so nice and you
- 34:55Speaker 6: say hi to everybody because you were born in Florida.
- 34:57Speaker 7: You were raised in Florida. So that's that's why.
- 35:00Speaker 6: So when Kip gives you crap, when Scott gives you
- 35:02Speaker 6: crop dos, why because those Florida people were from the
- 35:05Speaker 6: south and were nice.
- 35:06Speaker 10: Right, yeah, exactly.
- 35:10Speaker 3: Yep, that's debatable, highly debatable.
- 35:14Speaker 2: But we got you got a great minor league season
- 35:18Speaker 2: under your belt, smashing the baseball. But you you even
- 35:21Speaker 2: mentioned a quote where you started to make the game
- 35:22Speaker 2: a little bit bigger than it had to be. Did
- 35:24Speaker 2: you find I mean, as you went up through the ladders,
- 35:28Speaker 2: you think single A is the next show for you.
- 35:30Speaker 3: But you get there, the game solows down.
- 35:32Speaker 2: You're like, oh, I can do this, I can be
- 35:33Speaker 2: I can play with these guys double A the same
- 35:34Speaker 2: way get up to triple A. What are you going
- 35:37Speaker 2: to take then from that? Going into this year? How
- 35:39Speaker 2: are you going to approach the game? Are you going
- 35:40Speaker 2: to try to make it the same from game one
- 35:42Speaker 2: to game one sixty two if it gets there or
- 35:44Speaker 2: or are you gonna because sometimes it's good. Sometimes they
- 35:48Speaker 2: have that energy and to ride that kind of the
- 35:49Speaker 2: adrenaline for each match. But what are you taking from
- 35:52Speaker 2: last year and what are you using for this year?
- 35:54Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, I think last year that I'm going
- 35:56Speaker 9: to bring into this year is just kind of just
- 35:58Speaker 9: being where your feet are.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:00Speaker 9: There's a lot of times where you can look to
- 36:02Speaker 9: the future and say, like the what ifs If I
- 36:04Speaker 9: do this, I can get to this place. I think
- 36:07Speaker 9: that just takes you out of yourself. I think I've
- 36:09Speaker 9: done that a couple of times. I mean, right when
- 36:11Speaker 9: I got to Double A, I struggled for a couple
- 36:13Speaker 9: of weeks early, and I think it was really because
- 36:14Speaker 9: I went out of myself.
- 36:17Speaker 10: I tried to do too much. I tried to prove
- 36:19Speaker 10: that I belonged.
- 36:20Speaker 9: And at the end of the day, you're there for
- 36:22Speaker 9: a reason, and you're at that level because you're supposed
- 36:24Speaker 9: to be there.
- 36:25Speaker 10: And I think I.
- 36:26Speaker 9: Realized that pretty quickly and just kind of tap back
- 36:28Speaker 9: into what I do best and just being myself and
- 36:31Speaker 9: just simplifying the game.
- 36:32Speaker 10: Again.
- 36:32Speaker 9: I think a lot of my strengths come with simplicity.
- 36:35Speaker 9: I think controlling the zone is something that I'm very
- 36:38Speaker 9: good at, and I think that's something that I have
- 36:40Speaker 9: a lot of control over. Swing decisions, something that you control.
- 36:44Speaker 9: It's not the umpire calling balls and strikes. It's something
- 36:47Speaker 9: that you control. And I think a lot of that
- 36:49Speaker 9: comes into play when when the game does get to
- 36:52Speaker 9: be sped up a little bit on you, it's it's
- 36:53Speaker 9: going back to just the simple things and doing what
- 36:57Speaker 9: you can control. And I think a lot of that
- 36:58Speaker 9: comes down to just your effort and your attitude. And
- 37:01Speaker 9: I think I'm gonna bring that into the season as well,
- 37:04Speaker 9: just that positive attitude of just being where my feet
- 37:06Speaker 9: are and doing what it takes to win where I'm
- 37:08Speaker 9: at and just wherever that may be, whether it's in
- 37:10Speaker 9: the big leagues, whether it's Triple AAA, whatever that might be.
- 37:14Speaker 9: Just kind of being where your feet are and just
- 37:15Speaker 9: working to get better each day. And I have a
- 37:18Speaker 9: quote from my college coach that I always bring with
- 37:21Speaker 9: me every day. It's it's everything expires at midnight. So
- 37:24Speaker 9: whether it's a good game, whether it's a bad game,
- 37:27Speaker 9: it is minjion. You get a couple hours after the game.
- 37:30Speaker 9: Game might end at ten o'clock. You have it's from
- 37:33Speaker 9: ten to midnight to reflect on whatever you did that day,
- 37:36Speaker 9: whether you want to celebrate your successes or whether you
- 37:39Speaker 9: want to dwell on some of the failures you might
- 37:41Speaker 9: have had that day or the losses that you took.
- 37:44Speaker 9: But as soon as twelve o'cock hits, it's a new day.
- 37:46Speaker 9: So then you move on and it's it's to start
- 37:48Speaker 9: another day and just get back to work again.
- 37:51Speaker 6: Ryan, hold up, before we go on. The guy sitting
- 37:54Speaker 6: next to you, did you know he went to Kentucky
- 37:56Speaker 6: for one year and then transfer out, so you transferred in.
- 37:59Speaker 6: So that's why you didn't know that quote, because the
- 38:02Speaker 6: coach to Kentucky didn't give him that quote because he
- 38:05Speaker 6: left ye brought and then versus you who actually went
- 38:08Speaker 6: there to play.
- 38:10Speaker 2: I didn't know that quote because he was like minjio
- 38:13Speaker 2: on was the bottom assistant and wasn't allowed to talk
- 38:15Speaker 2: yet No, because.
- 38:17Speaker 6: You aren't too good, was too good to talk to
- 38:20Speaker 6: the third assistance if you were first off.
- 38:23Speaker 3: I red shirted, I read shirt.
- 38:25Speaker 2: It's like clearly wasn't too good, and then I got
- 38:29Speaker 2: kicked off then made it back on and then got
- 38:33Speaker 2: kicked off again. But yeah, me and you could even
- 38:36Speaker 2: if you talked to me, and Minjio never saw eyed
- 38:38Speaker 2: eye as the nicest way to put it, I guess
- 38:40Speaker 2: that way. But it is a fantastic quote. And I
- 38:43Speaker 2: will say, I want to hit back on what you
- 38:44Speaker 2: said earlier. It's not you're still consumed trying to prove
- 38:47Speaker 2: yourself that you belong that you forget that you already do,
- 38:51Speaker 2: or that you forget that you're there for a reason,
- 38:53Speaker 2: that your organization's behind you. They've moved you up for
- 38:56Speaker 2: a reason, whether you believe it or not. They think
- 38:58Speaker 2: you're ready. So I think I really like that you're
- 39:00Speaker 2: already kind of recognizing that they're like. It's not whether
- 39:03Speaker 2: i'm if I don't need to prove myself that I
- 39:05Speaker 2: belong here by getting there.
- 39:07Speaker 3: You've already proven yourself that you belong there.
- 39:09Speaker 10: For sure, all right, So I've got one.
- 39:13Speaker 5: I think you're the perfect person to ask this too,
- 39:15Speaker 5: because you had a banger of a season last year
- 39:20Speaker 5: and you've continued to develop at the plate right and
- 39:22Speaker 5: on the cusp of the big leagues. We often point
- 39:25Speaker 5: to organizations that do a really good job of developing
- 39:29Speaker 5: pitching talent. You know, we've talked to it's a national show, right,
- 39:32Speaker 5: So we've talked about the Rays and the Guardians and
- 39:34Speaker 5: the Brewers and some of these teams that will take
- 39:36Speaker 5: a guy or they'll develop guys and they just become
- 39:38Speaker 5: great pitching talents. I actually think we need to focus
- 39:41Speaker 5: on what Arizona is doing on the hitting side of things,
- 39:44Speaker 5: and would love to get your thoughts on where you
- 39:46Speaker 5: think the secret sauces. They've done a really good job
- 39:49Speaker 5: of developing prospects and turning them into big leaguers and
- 39:51Speaker 5: then also bringing guys over and making them even better.
- 39:55Speaker 5: So and that's why they've had one of the better
- 39:56Speaker 5: offenses in baseball over the last few years. So what
- 39:58Speaker 5: do you have for us, Like, what have you personally
- 40:01Speaker 5: seen from them that's helped you and that's helped the
- 40:04Speaker 5: organization pump out many players to be big league regulars
- 40:08Speaker 5: or even stars on the lineup.
- 40:10Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, I think they do an amazing job
- 40:13Speaker 9: on just kind of the communication aspect of it. You know,
- 40:16Speaker 9: I came in with a good feel of what I
- 40:18Speaker 9: do at the plate and why I do those things,
- 40:20Speaker 9: and we have conversations about it. There's never a time
- 40:23Speaker 9: where the coach is like, I want you to do this,
- 40:25Speaker 9: and you're going to do this and we're not going
- 40:27Speaker 9: to talk about it. You're going to figure out how
- 40:28Speaker 9: to do the way I'm telling you to do this.
- 40:30Speaker 10: Here. It's a lot of ask questions.
- 40:33Speaker 9: I think a lot of guys ask questions on why
- 40:35Speaker 9: we do things, and it really allows you to just
- 40:38Speaker 9: fully understand what they're trying to get you to do
- 40:40Speaker 9: and you can grasp the reasoning behind it. And I
- 40:43Speaker 9: think when you have that, it allows you to really
- 40:45Speaker 9: understand what your plan is at the plate and what
- 40:47Speaker 9: you're trying to do and what you're trying to accomplish,
- 40:49Speaker 9: so your drill work, VP, game swings, whatever it might be.
- 40:53Speaker 9: And I think that's huge because there's no cookie cutter
- 40:55Speaker 9: way that they're trying to make us. Each of us,
- 40:57Speaker 9: every single one of us have different swings, every single
- 41:00Speaker 9: one of us have different setups, and we talk through
- 41:02Speaker 9: everything that we're doing, and I think that's huge when
- 41:04Speaker 9: it comes down to it, because nobody's body's moved the same,
- 41:08Speaker 9: nobody's strengths are the same as each other. Everyone has
- 41:10Speaker 9: different weaknesses, everyone has different strengths. Our plans might be
- 41:13Speaker 9: different at the plate. I think Arizona does a great
- 41:15Speaker 9: job at recognizing that that we're not all going to
- 41:17Speaker 9: be going up to the plate with the same approach,
- 41:19Speaker 9: We're not all going to be swinging at the same pitches.
- 41:21Speaker 9: But as long as us as players understand what our
- 41:24Speaker 9: plan is and how to execute that plan, I think
- 41:26Speaker 9: that really allows each and every one of us to
- 41:28Speaker 9: do our jobs and allows each and every one of
- 41:30Speaker 9: us to excel.
- 41:31Speaker 10: Like to the level that we're trying to reach every day.
- 41:35Speaker 5: Hey, last one for you on the big league club?
- 41:40Speaker 5: Who do you talk to right now? Like, who's a
- 41:43Speaker 5: go to guy for you? Is there anyone kind of
- 41:45Speaker 5: offering more time, gracious with their time. You've got some
- 41:49Speaker 5: pretty veteran names there.
- 41:51Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 41:51Speaker 9: You know, obviously Corbyn's not around as much right now
- 41:55Speaker 9: just because he's getting that rehabit and just trying to
- 41:58Speaker 9: get ready back for opening day. But you know, At
- 42:01Speaker 9: and Jordan and even Borsa to all three of us,
- 42:04Speaker 9: all three of them have been really influential to me
- 42:07Speaker 9: so far.
- 42:07Speaker 10: Early in camp. You know, they had time.
- 42:09Speaker 9: Maybe if it's not a ton of time in the
- 42:10Speaker 9: big leagues, they're really just show me the ropes and
- 42:14Speaker 9: just how to just navigate what's going on. And and
- 42:17Speaker 9: you know, even Jordan too, fresh in the outfield, he's
- 42:19Speaker 9: asked questions to me, and it's very cool to see
- 42:22Speaker 9: someone that's in the big leagues and I haven't made
- 42:25Speaker 9: a debut or anything yet, but he's asking questions to
- 42:27Speaker 9: me on how he can get better in the outfield.
- 42:29Speaker 9: And you know, I'm asking Alex questions about how I
- 42:32Speaker 9: can get better jumps.
- 42:33Speaker 10: And and what to do on defense stuff like that.
- 42:35Speaker 9: And you know, those at least for Outfitters, have been
- 42:38Speaker 9: really good so far for me to talk to. And
- 42:40Speaker 9: even Gurriel too, he's starting to make his way back
- 42:42Speaker 9: out there after his ACL surgery and and you know,
- 42:45Speaker 9: he's just he's a great energy guy to have around,
- 42:47Speaker 9: and it really allows you to play, relax and be
- 42:50Speaker 9: loose out there when we're doing our work because you know,
- 42:52Speaker 9: he's a veteran and he can do what he wants,
- 42:54Speaker 9: you know, whenever, and he he doesn't have to take
- 42:57Speaker 9: the time to necessarily talk to me and each me things.
- 43:00Speaker 9: But he's been really cool out there to have and
- 43:02Speaker 9: you know, it really just allows me to think again,
- 43:05Speaker 9: and you know, it's just the game and it's you're
- 43:07Speaker 9: supposed to have fun with it, and it's really cool
- 43:09Speaker 9: to see a guy like Guryell got there and just
- 43:11Speaker 9: kind of have the happy medium of knowing when he
- 43:14Speaker 9: needs to be locked in and get his work in,
- 43:17Speaker 9: but then also the time where you can relax and
- 43:18Speaker 9: kind of talk to each other and have a good
- 43:20Speaker 9: time out there.
- 43:21Speaker 7: I love that.
- 43:23Speaker 6: By the way, the fact that you just said Alec
- 43:24Speaker 6: Thomas is like a veteran. He was like the little
- 43:27Speaker 6: shit kid running around the clubhouse, right, I mean, now
- 43:30Speaker 6: he's like, oh, look at this a veteran. I'm like,
- 43:32Speaker 6: oh my gosh, how.
- 43:33Speaker 7: Old were five years in the things now?
- 43:35Speaker 3: Right?
- 43:36Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 43:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I know.
- 43:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 43:38Speaker 10: The other day we actually were joking around.
- 43:39Speaker 9: We were out there and Guriel wasn't out there and
- 43:42Speaker 9: we were talking and h I think the oldest guy
- 43:45Speaker 9: we had in the outfield through like the nine of
- 43:47Speaker 9: us was like twenty six years old. So we really
- 43:50Speaker 9: had nobody out there that necessarily even considered a veteran.
- 43:54Speaker 10: At this point.
- 43:55Speaker 9: Everyone's pretty young, so it's a pretty cool, uh core
- 43:57Speaker 9: of young guys that we got out there.
- 44:00Speaker 7: Yeah, that's young man's game.
- 44:01Speaker 8: Ryan.
- 44:02Speaker 5: Great to chat with you, appreciate the time, good luck
- 44:04Speaker 5: the rest of spring.
- 44:05Speaker 10: All right, Yeah, thank you guys so much. I appreciate it.
