Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome back to the Letterbox Podcast.
- 0:03Where are there you are listening in from?
- 0:06Thank you so much for being here.
- 0:08Really does mean a lot to me and I know the people who are
- 0:11writing the letters too. If you've heard the last few
- 0:16letters, you'll know we've explored some deeply personal
- 0:19stories. One of the things I love about
- 0:22what this podcast is becoming though, is that there are no
- 0:25rules about what deserves to be in a letter.
- 0:29Today's letter is a light hearted one.
- 0:32It's been sent in by Anna, who's nearly 30, and like so many
- 0:36people of that generation, myself included, grew up with
- 0:40Friends, the TV show permanently playing somewhere in the
- 0:43background. What we're going to listen to
- 0:45isn't just a love letter to a sitcom, it's a reflection and
- 0:49growing up alongside 6 fictional characters who somehow became
- 0:53companions through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood,
- 0:58teaching lessons both profound and completely ridiculous.
- 1:05Before I read today's letter, if you think this one is going to
- 1:08resonate with someone you know, please share it with them.
- 1:11And if you're not already, following and leaving a rating
- 1:14genuinely helps more people discover these stories.
- 1:17But now it's time for Anna's letter.
- 1:22Dear Phoebe, Monica, Rachel, Chandler, Ross and Joey.
- 1:29So no one told your life was going to be this way.
- 1:33I'm just going to say I'm highly embarrassed and I was very
- 1:38particular in her e-mail and said that I must sing and clap
- 1:44and. Who am I to?
- 1:45Deviate away from the writer's wishes, but please don't ask me
- 1:49to do that again. Growing up in the 90s, my
- 1:53childhood days included this song at least six times a day.
- 1:57Friends was routinely played during our morning routine at
- 2:008:00 AM on Channel 4. Two episodes were then on E4 at
- 2:045 PME 4 + 1 at 6:00 PM, another two episodes on E4 at 8:00 PM,
- 2:09and then E 4 + 1 again at 9:00 PM.
- 2:13Of course, that was never enough, so my sisters and I own
- 2:16the complete VHS and DVD collection too.
- 2:20Yes, it's Needless to say that Friends played a big part of my
- 2:25childhood. To this day, it's still my
- 2:28comfort show when I'm sad, ill, or simply a little bored.
- 2:33For me, the show really does live up to the lyrics.
- 2:37I'll be there for you when the rain starts to pour.
- 2:41I'll be there for you like I've been there before.
- 2:46I'll be there for you because you're there for me too.
- 2:51For 25 years you've been there. With laughs, wisdom, life
- 2:56lessons and questionable advice, the show felt like having
- 3:01another set of family members, so much so that I genuinely
- 3:05started using American words and accents for things as a child.
- 3:09It taught me about language, relationships and unfortunately
- 3:13made at the majority of my sex education as well.
- 3:16My school teachers certainly didn't talk about the mysterious
- 3:20magic 7 number that Monica gets so excited about.
- 3:23And her advice to take your time, hit them all, mix them up.
- 3:26You got to keep them on their toes.
- 3:29And supposedly how Joey's line, how you doing is the most
- 3:33seductive line any human could ever say ever, with 100% success
- 3:39rate. It taught me that a circumcised
- 3:42man like Joey, although I don't think I knew what that was when
- 3:46I was younger, could apparently solve all his problems with
- 3:48Silly Putty. That leather trousers should
- 3:51never be worn on the first date in summer, That safe sex is
- 3:55important. And sometimes rock, paper,
- 3:58scissors is required to decide who gets the last condom.
- 4:02And supposedly there's something called shark porn.
- 4:06Yeah, perhaps not the best source to learn about sex, but
- 4:11the show also covered the nuances of dating the crazy and
- 4:16interesting world of seeking a partner in your 20s and 30's.
- 4:21The Friends to Lovers story of Monica and Chandler showed how
- 4:25attraction can grow from friendship, trust, and mutual
- 4:28respect. Yet Joey and Rachel reminded us
- 4:31that sometimes the fantasy doesn't translate into reality.
- 4:35Unfortunately, who we fall in love with isn't always a choice.
- 4:40Monica falls in love with Richard despite differing views
- 4:44on starting a family. Ross's wife has an affair and
- 4:47embraces a new sexual identity, leaving him anxious, clingy and
- 4:52insecure. The show also taught me some
- 4:56realities of family planning. Things don't always go according
- 5:00to plan, whether that's a surprise pregnancy like little
- 5:04Emma, the complexities of Phoebe surrogacy, or the heartbreak of
- 5:10struggling to conceive. Not only that, but it also
- 5:15taught me what working as an adult can be like.
- 5:19Supposedly that grown up jobs include going to coffee shops
- 5:23with your friends every day of the week, that you can live in
- 5:26New York in an amazing apartment on a very tight budget.
- 5:30So I was bitterly disappointed upon entering the workforce and
- 5:34realising that is not what adulting looks like.
- 5:38But there were some more useful prayer lessons in the show.
- 5:42Chandler told me it's never too late to change careers and take
- 5:45a risk. Ross showed me why you must
- 5:48clearly label your food in the office fridge.
- 5:51The mental health breakdown following your boss eating your
- 5:53Turkey moist maker sandwich is simply not worth it.
- 5:58Getting promoted to a manager and being Boss Man Bing means
- 6:02your relationships with your colleagues might change a
- 6:05little. And whatever you do, try your
- 6:08best not to accidentally kiss your boss at your interview.
- 6:11Like Rachel watching the show as a grown up, I've connected with
- 6:16different characters at different stages of my life,
- 6:19learning from both their wisdom and their flaws.
- 6:24Chandler, you taught me not to take life too seriously.
- 6:28Quick witted sarcasm is truly a gift.
- 6:32You also showed how attachment wounds in fear of commitment can
- 6:35affect your adult relationships. I still can't believe you
- 6:39actually ran away on the morning of your wedding.
- 6:42Phoebe. Wacky, wonderful and my all time
- 6:47favourite. A true role model for following
- 6:51your passions, writing songs about smelly cats, creating
- 6:55mannequin art and never being afraid to live authentically and
- 6:58go against the grain. Watching as an adult, I feel
- 7:02genuine compassion for everything you endured growing
- 7:05up, homelessness, loss and learning to survive on your own.
- 7:12Yet somehow, you remained kind, quirky, and hopeful.
- 7:16You taught me to embrace my inner hippie and that maybe,
- 7:19just maybe, that stray cat could be a reincarnated loved 1 Ross.
- 7:27Oh Ross, the jealous, possessive boyfriend.
- 7:32Yep, you taught me what to be wary of when choosing a partner.
- 7:36To never say someone else's name at a wedding, never date your
- 7:40students, and don't try to kiss your cousin.
- 7:43You and be careful who you marry. 3 divorces before 30 is
- 7:47quite an achievement. But also, you taught me to
- 7:52follow my passions, throw myself into learning and nurture
- 7:57relationships with my siblings. You also taught me to be wary of
- 8:02spray tampoos and teeth whitening.
- 8:06Rachel what an ark from spoiled Princess to independent,
- 8:11successful career women. A reminder not to depend on
- 8:14others to build life for yourself.
- 8:17Step outside your comfort zone and discover what you're truly
- 8:21capable of. Joey, you taught me that
- 8:26sometimes childlike view of the world is exactly what?
- 8:29Is needed. A character who embraced his
- 8:32love of food, showed resilience in the face of constant
- 8:36rejection from auditions, and remained fiercely loyal to the
- 8:39people he loved. Monica, a perfectionist at
- 8:44heart. A woman who loves control, fears
- 8:47her past, and uses obsessive cleaning to cope while secretly
- 8:50hiding a chaotic cupboard that nobody is allowed to see.
- 8:55Honestly, I think most of us can relate to that a little.
- 9:00But you also showed determination, kindness, and a
- 9:04courage to keep pursuing motherhood despite enormous
- 9:07challenges. So before I leave you, thank you
- 9:13for the lessons that only the six of you could provide.
- 9:18One, Make friends with your neighbours across the hall.
- 9:22They might be a Mr Heckles, or they might become lifelong
- 9:26friends and partners. Two, your friendships can truly
- 9:31transform your life. Embrace each other's
- 9:35differences, nurture your relationships, and repair the
- 9:38ruptures when they happen. 3 When things get stuck, shouting
- 9:43pivot doesn't actually help, but it certainly lightens.
- 9:48The mood. 4 Thanksgiving pants with a stretchy stomach are in
- 9:53fact a necessity as an adult for the festive period.
- 9:57If you ever want to know what feet taste like, simply add beef
- 10:02to your trifle. 6 If I ever have children higher than male nanny
- 10:08who plays recorder, cries and bakes madeleines, what an Angel.
- 10:147 Break up with toxic partners and don't waste years of your
- 10:19life trying to force something that isn't right.
- 10:23As Phoebe says, find your lobster.
- 10:25They might not arrive when you expect, but keep looking 8 They
- 10:31don't know that we know that they know we know, and it's OK.
- 10:399 Unagi It's not something you are, it's something you have. 10
- 10:49If you're lucky enough to find a real friendship group, love them
- 10:53fiercely, show them gratitude, and don't take them for granted.
- 10:59And if you're still searching for yours, that's OK too.
- 11:03These six friends will always be here for you and remind you it's
- 11:06OK if no one told you life was going to be this way.
- 11:14Anna, thank you so much for that letter.
- 11:18I really enjoyed reading it. Apart from the singing, I, like
- 11:24you keep revisiting friends over and over again in my life.
- 11:29It really is one of my happy places and I know for so many
- 11:33people out there it is theirs too.
- 11:37It may not have aged well in all aspects over the years, but
- 11:41there is something about those six friends that is really
- 11:44magical and comforting. If.
- 11:48You have listened today and you've enjoyed it and it's made
- 11:52you smile or it's made you sing. I would love for you to send
- 11:56this on to somebody else who you know would equally appreciate
- 12:00everything that was in this letter.
- 12:02And as always, if there is something that you would like to
- 12:06write about, remember it. Can be.
- 12:08To anyone or anything please do send me your letter, I would
- 12:13love to read it. I will leave you there.
- 12:17But perhaps next time you. See one of your friends?
- 12:19Just give them that little bit tighter of a hug.
- 12:23Thank you again for listening to the Letterbox podcast.
