- 0:10Speaker 1: Beef, so Freddie Parolta leaves, and then all of a sudden,
- 0:14Speaker 1: another story comes out about him calling a meeting to
- 0:18Speaker 1: try and clear the air with Sodo and Lindor. It's
- 0:20Speaker 1: the story that doesn't go away, but it's also a
- 0:23Speaker 1: story that got absolutely shattered to pieces when Mike Puma
- 0:25Speaker 1: put it out last offseason and people were like, how
- 0:28Speaker 1: dare he?
- 0:29Speaker 2: He's so wrong? He was so right, He was so right.
- 0:32Speaker 2: But Freddie p was trying to bring a little bit
- 0:35Speaker 2: of peace here. Aj and I know this is off
- 0:37Speaker 2: the field stuff and you don't have to be best.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Friends, and we've talked about this a lot, but Freddy
- 0:42Speaker 1: Parolta bringing a meeting together makes things a little bit interesting.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Castillo helping us out a little bit with this tweet.
- 0:48Speaker 1: He said on the field his tenure was disappointing. Off it,
- 0:52Speaker 1: he made a major contribution to arrange that meeting between
- 0:55Speaker 1: Lindor and Juan Soto. Soda doesn't really want to talk
- 0:58Speaker 1: about it.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I think.
- 1:00Speaker 3: No, I love it. By the way, doesn't mats starting now?
- 1:02Speaker 3: Just fycratch, the game is now just he's on right
- 1:06Speaker 3: now in the first so I.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Start talking about it.
- 1:11Speaker 3: It happens it happens to all of us. It's all good.
- 1:13Speaker 3: It's all good. So God makes bets all the time
- 1:15Speaker 3: that we have to change, so it's all good. I
- 1:16Speaker 3: mess up all.
- 1:17Speaker 2: One time, all year.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Okay, it's all good. It's all good. We all make mistakes.
- 1:21Speaker 3: But uh, I love this that Freddie per Alta was
- 1:23Speaker 3: the kind of the mediator in this whole thing that
- 1:26Speaker 3: again everyone said wasn't true. But if you talk to
- 1:29Speaker 3: people around the Mets organization. Now I'm not talking about
- 1:32Speaker 3: people in the organization, but you talk to enough for
- 1:34Speaker 3: the media people, they'll say there was something there now
- 1:37Speaker 3: hasn't improved this year. Absolutely was it because of Freddie Peralta.
- 1:40Speaker 3: It seems like he was a piece of it. So
- 1:42Speaker 3: that's good for the Mets going forward. You know, Freddy's
- 1:47Speaker 3: Freddy has always been one of the best guys. He's
- 1:49Speaker 3: always got a great smile, He's always happy to see you.
- 1:51Speaker 3: So it does not surprise me that Freddy Peralta would
- 1:54Speaker 3: be in the middle of this trying to make peace
- 1:56Speaker 3: because he just seems like a good guy who wants
- 1:58Speaker 3: good vibes and wants a good club to work.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm interested to why Juan Soto didn't want to
- 2:05Speaker 4: comment about it, or did he say it didn't happen
- 2:08Speaker 4: or I'm not exactly sure what his quotes were. But
- 2:11Speaker 4: they're there together for a long time. Lindor and Juan
- 2:15Speaker 4: Soto need to get together. They need to get along better.
- 2:20Speaker 4: In my opinion, I get it, you know, wins make
- 2:23Speaker 4: everybody feel a lot better. But there's also a thing
- 2:27Speaker 4: of like how much does this affect winning or how
- 2:31Speaker 4: much does it affect you just want the best out
- 2:34Speaker 4: of your two best players in my opinion.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Yeah, And in this story from Castillo, who is citing sources,
- 2:41Speaker 1: and at this point we should trust the sources because
- 2:43Speaker 1: many people have reported on this thing. He said the
- 2:47Speaker 1: relationship has been noticeably warmer. There's more interaction between the two.
- 2:51Speaker 1: But he said that there were attentions lingering heading into
- 2:55Speaker 1: the second season, and that's where earlier this year, Peralta
- 2:59Speaker 1: set a meeting. The meeting was in June. It's not
- 3:02Speaker 1: like the meetings in like March or April. Like we're
- 3:05Speaker 1: talking June, when the Mets had already collapsed too. And
- 3:08Speaker 1: then I was alluding to this. I'll give you more
- 3:10Speaker 1: details now a j I'll give you two quotes, one
- 3:15Speaker 1: from Lindor, one from Sodo on the meeting. Here's Lindor first.
- 3:19Speaker 1: It was more of a conversation like we always have
- 3:21Speaker 1: with our group of Latinos. But I don't want to
- 3:22Speaker 1: comment on the details. Okay, so they had it, doesn't
- 3:25Speaker 1: want to go over it. I respect that Soda quote.
- 3:28Speaker 1: There was no meeting, no discussion. This year has been better.
- 3:31Speaker 1: We've gotten along very well. We've learned from each other.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Are they on the same page if one there's a
- 3:36Speaker 1: meeting and one doesn't or he just I mean, I
- 3:38Speaker 1: know that he doesn't want to talk about it, but
- 3:40Speaker 1: denying it is a little bit interesting, Like it it
- 3:44Speaker 1: definitely happened, and you've got a teammates saying it happened,
- 3:48Speaker 1: But then you didn't say it happened, So shouldn't you
- 3:50Speaker 1: just be like, hey, let's just say it happened. Like
- 3:52Speaker 1: what are we going to say if this comes out?
- 3:54Speaker 1: We said it happened, And I liked the Lindor's line
- 3:57Speaker 1: about it.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Lindor handled this perfectly. Soto just I think this was
- 4:03Speaker 3: an old Sodo. You know what a easy way to
- 4:05Speaker 3: shut this down. Maybe Soto talked first before Lindor. I
- 4:09Speaker 3: don't know. I don't know how it worked. Maybe they
- 4:11Speaker 3: went to Sodo first. Sodo said it didn't happen, and
- 4:13Speaker 3: then Lindor said it did happen. So again, I don't
- 4:16Speaker 3: know all the semantics and all the little details about this.
- 4:19Speaker 3: So look, they're handled it. Their relationship is better. Isn't
- 4:23Speaker 3: that what Mets fans want? They want Soto and Lindor
- 4:25Speaker 3: to just can't we all just get along and just
- 4:27Speaker 3: give each other a big hug? Wasn't an opening day
- 4:29Speaker 3: where they barely when they grew introduced and they barely
- 4:32Speaker 3: spoke to each other at home plate where everyone else
- 4:34Speaker 3: was giving each other hugs and it was like, hey,
- 4:36Speaker 3: what's up, buddy?
- 4:39Speaker 4: It was I forgot about that. I don't know. It
- 4:42Speaker 4: just means maybe one person. It's all speculation. Maybe Wan
- 4:47Speaker 4: wasn't as pleased with the conversation. Maybe he still doesn't
- 4:51Speaker 4: like whatever it is about Lindor they doesn't like. Who
- 4:55Speaker 4: knows gives us something to talk about. Otherwise we're not
- 4:58Speaker 4: talking about the Mets because they've been out of it
- 5:00Speaker 4: since second series.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Yeah, well, then is the air really clear or is
- 5:07Speaker 1: it more like the air a few weeks ago when
- 5:09Speaker 1: we had the wildfire air in New York from Canada.
- 5:14Speaker 2: That was some ugly air.
- 5:16Speaker 3: It's better better than it was the air or the
- 5:20Speaker 3: relationship both both because I was there for New York
- 5:23Speaker 3: and it was not good air.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Okay, well we'll see what happens. Did you see uh
- 5:35Speaker 1: Keith r Nandez had to apologize. He was a little
- 5:37Speaker 1: harsh on the trade and all the trades that were
- 5:39Speaker 1: being made. You guys didn't see that. He's just like, yeah,
- 5:43Speaker 1: he said, He's like, they're definitely shuffled, brought in the
- 5:47Speaker 1: truck and took out all the garbage talking about the
- 5:49Speaker 1: Mets fire cell like he was trying to do a
- 5:51Speaker 1: little play on words, and then he had to apologize, say,
- 5:54Speaker 1: I said, got out the garbage portraits sports.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Can't believe they came out of my mouth. Apologies.
- 5:59Speaker 3: I mean, I feel like he's done this a few
- 6:01Speaker 3: times this year, last couple of years, where he said
- 6:03Speaker 3: things and then immediately apologizes for it. Basically, he called
- 6:07Speaker 3: Clay Holmes garbage, Freddy Parolta garbage, anyone that Mets traded
- 6:10Speaker 3: away is garbage. Basically what he said.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I've worked with him and he tries to do the
- 6:16Speaker 1: play on words, and he's a funny guy, and I
- 6:19Speaker 1: just think he was doing that. I don't know all
- 6:21Speaker 1: the context, but if he had then gone down and
- 6:24Speaker 1: said this guy was trash, this guy was trash, then
- 6:26Speaker 1: he means it. And he has done that stuff before,
- 6:29Speaker 1: not those exact words, but he has really ripped particular players.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I think he was just having fun with like, oh
- 6:35Speaker 1: it's fire sale, Yeah, we got the trash out.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Never nice. Never nice as as a player to hear
- 6:43Speaker 3: your your local announcer call you garbage, I don't care. Wow,
- 6:46Speaker 3: he meant it. I'm sorry. It's just just not something. Again,
- 6:50Speaker 3: it's not something that should be said. I'm sorry. That's
- 6:52Speaker 3: just my opinion. I mean, I would be super pissed
- 6:55Speaker 3: if I played for the Mets and I was one
- 6:56Speaker 3: of the guys who got traded and Keith Nada is
- 6:58Speaker 3: calling me garbage after I walked out the door. Again,
- 7:01Speaker 3: I don't know how he meant it, but I don't
- 7:02Speaker 3: know how there's a way he could mean it any
- 7:04Speaker 3: other way, playing on words or not.
- 7:06Speaker 4: I think being on the team every day, or being
- 7:09Speaker 4: with the team on the radio or TV, you say
- 7:12Speaker 4: things if you never show up in the clubhouse. I
- 7:16Speaker 4: think things are taking a little bit differently than if
- 7:19Speaker 4: you show up in the clubhouse the next day, whether
- 7:21Speaker 4: they want to talk to you or not, you show up,
- 7:23Speaker 4: and I think it's you know, it's a little bit
- 7:26Speaker 4: different when you're on another team, if you're Clay Homes,
- 7:28Speaker 4: you're in Chicago. Yeah, I get it. You're supposed to
- 7:31Speaker 4: put behind you whatever happened in New York, but you
- 7:34Speaker 4: still hear it.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Yeah, one more Mets quote, and then I want to
- 7:38Speaker 1: swing it to the team that they were playing the
- 7:39Speaker 1: more relevant team right now, the Guardians. Kuld I Sanga
- 7:43Speaker 1: told officials that he wants to start consistently. Are told yeah,
- 7:46Speaker 1: Mets officials. But the quote that he gave to the
- 7:48Speaker 1: media was the team could just tell me, hey, dude,
- 7:51Speaker 1: look at your stats, and I don't have anything to
- 7:53Speaker 1: say back to them.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Yeahpecially honestly, it's basically what they're saying to him. Wh
- 7:59Speaker 3: they have him in the bull.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Mm hmm, okay.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Other side, it's like a it's like a rap battle.
- 8:07Speaker 4: When you make fun of yourself, you can't like nobody
- 8:10Speaker 4: can really say anything back to you, like, hey, you're right.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Of course he wants to start. Of course he wants
- 8:16Speaker 4: to start. There's no no starter. That's like, I'd rather
- 8:19Speaker 4: be in the bullpen. It's much better life than the bullpen.
- 8:23Speaker 1: No, he cares. It's been in the miners working on it.
- 8:28Speaker 1: It's just you know, it's he's forward now. It fell
- 8:32Speaker 1: apart fast, Yeah, did he? Man, he would looked good
- 8:36Speaker 1: in the beginning of that contracts.
- 8:39Speaker 4: That trick pick in city field. See, I mean, if
- 8:44Speaker 4: David Starns is listening, you find somebody with a trick pitch.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Some years the wind is blowing the right way. Look
- 8:50Speaker 4: at what a a dicky did. There's a trick pitch.
- 8:53Speaker 4: It's a gimmick pitch. His fork all thing, ghost fork,
- 8:58Speaker 4: there's a gimmick pitch. It worked really really well, and
- 9:01Speaker 4: I get it. He hasn't stayed healthy. It was a calf.
- 9:03Speaker 4: It was a it was a thing. It was another thing.
- 9:06Speaker 4: But man, he was so nasty. He was He was
- 9:10Speaker 4: looking like it was that contract was going to be
- 9:11Speaker 4: a steal because he was so nah And he was
- 9:15Speaker 4: even nastier than his season numbers at home that year.
- 9:19Speaker 4: And you know what, the prevailing wind changed whatever it is.
- 9:24Speaker 1: All right, other side, good back and forth game they
- 9:27Speaker 1: had with the guardians, did you guys see uh on
- 9:31Speaker 1: hell henow.
- 9:36Speaker 4: One of the top.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Prospects in the sport. He's a top twenty on almost
- 9:39Speaker 2: every list. Four for four, that's a good debut.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Well, and then he had a chance in the last
- 9:44Speaker 3: time and didn't get a hit. So guardians are struggling
- 9:47Speaker 3: right No, right for struggling Guardian. Guardians are struggling right now.
- 9:51Speaker 3: They're they're they're losing again. Today Foster Griffin started and
- 9:54Speaker 3: he didn't have a great start. So Guardians are struggling
- 9:57Speaker 3: right now. The White Sox aren't playing very well, but
- 9:59Speaker 3: the Guardians are playing worse. So it's making the White
- 10:02Speaker 3: Sox still feel like they're in first place because they are.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Wonderfu Hoose Ramirez is one hundred percent healthy. I don't
- 10:08Speaker 4: you know, you come back from an injury, you'd think, okay,
- 10:11Speaker 4: now they're gonna now, they're gonna roll. They've actually been
- 10:14Speaker 4: worse since he's been back. I'm not saying it's his fault.
- 10:16Speaker 4: I'm saying, you know, but hey, this is what the
- 10:21Speaker 4: Guardians do. They call down to Columbus and they're like,
- 10:23Speaker 4: who's the hottest hitter in Columbus? Call them up and
- 10:27Speaker 4: they seem to do well. They just plug guys in.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Is Joe Addell gonna give them seven home runs down
- 10:34Speaker 4: the rest of the season here? I think the fences
- 10:37Speaker 4: are a little too high for him to rob all
- 10:39Speaker 4: the home runs that he robbed. But like, there's there's
- 10:41Speaker 4: value there, But is it gonna be able to be
- 10:44Speaker 4: able to be enough to push this team across not
- 10:49Speaker 4: just the finish line, but playoff line and then do
- 10:52Speaker 4: some damage with that bullpen in the postseason?
- 10:57Speaker 2: Yeah? There you go five to two in that one. Wow.
- 10:59Speaker 2: A little live update with Foster.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Griffin not having it in his Guardian's debut gone up
- 11:05Speaker 1: against Nolan McLean. Jason Stark joining us from the Athletic
- 11:10Speaker 1: and many other spots. Jason, great to have you back
- 11:12Speaker 1: on here. We appreciate the time and awesome, awesome story
- 11:15Speaker 1: and insight on the conversation with Dave Dombrowski.
- 11:17Speaker 2: I got right to biz here. So how did this
- 11:20Speaker 2: all go down?
- 11:21Speaker 1: And what did you learn from the conversation with Dave
- 11:24Speaker 1: about what he did and also his relationship with Bryce Harper.
- 11:29Speaker 5: Yes, Scott, thank you, thanks for having me. Doug Laville
- 11:34Speaker 5: and I talked today for our Startfeld podcast which actually
- 11:38Speaker 5: drops tomorrow, and Dave was so candid. This is as
- 11:42Speaker 5: candid as any conversation I think I've ever had with
- 11:45Speaker 5: an executive about a deadline. And I mean, let's start
- 11:50Speaker 5: with this. They started out shopping for an outfielder who
- 11:54Speaker 5: hit right handed, and they wound up with an infielder
- 11:58Speaker 5: who hits left handed. So that does it. This was
- 12:01Speaker 5: a little different than what you would have expected. And
- 12:04Speaker 5: none of that happens if the biggest star in their team,
- 12:08Speaker 5: who is Bryce, doesn't say, yeah, I know I haven't
- 12:11Speaker 5: taken a fly ball for four years, but I'll do that,
- 12:14Speaker 5: and then everything else falls in place. But you guys
- 12:17Speaker 5: know all the history between Dave and Bryce, Dave saying
- 12:21Speaker 5: last fall he wasn't sure if Bryce was elite anymore,
- 12:24Speaker 5: and then a week ago, leading up to the deadline,
- 12:27Speaker 5: Bryce says we need help, which was kind of Bryce's
- 12:31Speaker 5: way of saying, hey, Dave, why don't you be elite
- 12:34Speaker 5: now at what you do? And it really set the
- 12:37Speaker 5: stage for those two guys to have a fascinating exchange
- 12:43Speaker 5: right through the deadline, and Dave recounts it all.
- 12:47Speaker 6: I think you hit it perfectly because I was going
- 12:49Speaker 6: to ask that same question about the conversation that they had.
- 12:53Speaker 6: So for me, I guess and your eyes from the
- 12:57Speaker 6: conversations that you've had, is this a good thing and
- 13:00Speaker 6: for the relationship for Dave and Harper or can this
- 13:05Speaker 6: lead to a little bit more conflection?
- 13:09Speaker 5: You know, I actually think they got to a good place, Dodd,
- 13:12Speaker 5: or certainly the best place they've been in for quite
- 13:15Speaker 5: some time. So three days after Bryce said what he said,
- 13:21Speaker 5: Dave went down after the game this is last Friday
- 13:24Speaker 5: in Baltimore and found Bryce. Bryce was eating after the
- 13:27Speaker 5: game and Dave sits down with him in full view
- 13:31Speaker 5: of the rest of the team. And actually, because you know,
- 13:34Speaker 5: if you know where the food tables are now in Baltimore,
- 13:38Speaker 5: actually outside the clubhouse, everybody got to see it, Media
- 13:42Speaker 5: saw it, and so they had a really what sounds
- 13:47Speaker 5: like frank exchange where Bryce said, I honestly didn't mean
- 13:51Speaker 5: this personally, Dave, I just wanted to make sure that
- 13:55Speaker 5: you understood we think we need help, And Dave said,
- 14:00Speaker 5: I get it. And you know, Todd, I don't know
- 14:05Speaker 5: whether just on the basis of that conversation, there now
- 14:10Speaker 5: back to where they'll they'll be meeting for breakfast every morning,
- 14:14Speaker 5: you know. But they needed to be in the same
- 14:18Speaker 5: place and on the same wavelength because they needed Rice
- 14:25Speaker 5: to sign off on this, to get everybody else to
- 14:28Speaker 5: sign off on it, because it's an incredibly risky deal
- 14:32Speaker 5: to make, you know. I asked Dave this the day
- 14:34Speaker 5: after the deadline. I asked him again on our show,
- 14:38Speaker 5: do you think you've ever made a trade that disrupted
- 14:42Speaker 5: your team more than this one? Because they honestly had
- 14:44Speaker 5: to blow up four positions on the field. I don't
- 14:47Speaker 5: remember that, and he said, no, I don't think I
- 14:50Speaker 5: ever have. So we actually looked further. We got all
- 14:53Speaker 5: the trades as far back as we could go, mid
- 14:55Speaker 5: season trades, and we got all the teams had three
- 15:01Speaker 5: players on that team who played at least ninety games
- 15:04Speaker 5: at one position and then also another forty games or
- 15:07Speaker 5: more at another position, and not one of them was
- 15:11Speaker 5: a result of trading for one player and putting the
- 15:15Speaker 5: rest of the lineup through the Queason art. You know,
- 15:17Speaker 5: this was the only one maybe in the history. None
- 15:20Speaker 5: of that can happen if Bryce doesn't buy in. Yeah.
- 15:25Speaker 6: So, all this being said, the moves they made, the
- 15:29Speaker 6: people they got. Now let's turn the picture over to
- 15:33Speaker 6: present time. Are the Phillies going to find a way
- 15:36Speaker 6: to get into this playoff mix and do some damage
- 15:39Speaker 6: with the team they got right.
- 15:40Speaker 5: Now, Brad, I think they're dangerous. I do. All right,
- 15:46Speaker 5: Let's look at the reason that you would say yes.
- 15:50Speaker 5: Their record when they're one, two three starters Pitch Sanchez,
- 15:55Speaker 5: Wheeler Lizardo is the best record of any team with
- 16:00Speaker 5: any three starters in the sport. And who's gonna pitch
- 16:03Speaker 5: when you get to October. It's gonna be those three guys.
- 16:07Speaker 5: So that's a big deal. They've got one of the
- 16:09Speaker 5: best closers in the sport. The team on the field now,
- 16:13Speaker 5: seven of the eight position players have started an All
- 16:16Speaker 5: Star game, So they have the star power, they have
- 16:20Speaker 5: the playoff experience, they have the rotation, they have the closer.
- 16:24Speaker 5: Having said that, they are very flawed and they are
- 16:27Speaker 5: very thin. They don't have a veteran sixth starter or
- 16:34Speaker 5: even fifth starter to plug in if anybody gets hurt.
- 16:38Speaker 5: That's a real worry. They still have a very uncertain
- 16:41Speaker 5: path to try to get to Dran when the starter
- 16:44Speaker 5: comes out of the game, that's a big worry. And
- 16:47Speaker 5: then they're very left handed. I know a rise hits
- 16:51Speaker 5: left handed pitching, and he hits good pitching, and that's
- 16:53Speaker 5: really important. It's why they did that deal. But like
- 16:57Speaker 5: if you wanted to right the Phillies go to October,
- 17:02Speaker 5: here's what happens. You could see two really different outcomes.
- 17:07Speaker 5: It's amazing, Jason.
- 17:10Speaker 7: At the end of the day, do you think this
- 17:11Speaker 7: was more about just getting the best impact bat they
- 17:14Speaker 7: could get or was it about finding a righty outfielder?
- 17:17Speaker 7: How did it end up falling on our eyes when
- 17:19Speaker 7: they were looking for a righty outfield bat.
- 17:22Speaker 5: Yeah, Brad, they've admitted that they had quite a debate
- 17:26Speaker 5: on this. What they really wanted was a middle of
- 17:30Speaker 5: the order, right handed bat. Tell me who that was.
- 17:32Speaker 5: That guy didn't get traded at this market. And when
- 17:35Speaker 5: they came to that conclusion and they thought they matched
- 17:39Speaker 5: up on Arias, then they had to kick it around
- 17:42Speaker 5: at so many different levels. I mean, they gathered just
- 17:47Speaker 5: like the olden days. You know, Dave gathers his most
- 17:50Speaker 5: trusted scouts and the top of his front office. They
- 17:54Speaker 5: all went to Baltimore last weekend and they all debated,
- 17:57Speaker 5: is this is what we should do? He said. Not
- 18:01Speaker 5: everybody was in agreement. He pulled his coaches, can we
- 18:05Speaker 5: do this. If we do this, will these players be
- 18:09Speaker 5: willing to do it? And then he you know, they
- 18:11Speaker 5: between him, Don Mattically the coaches, they had to make
- 18:15Speaker 5: sure that that was the case, that these players understood
- 18:19Speaker 5: why they were doing it and they were willing to
- 18:21Speaker 5: do it. So, I mean, that's a lot of stuff
- 18:25Speaker 5: to make happen, and it's a big roll of the
- 18:28Speaker 5: dice on so many different levels. But I don't know,
- 18:30Speaker 5: bet you guys, I kind of admire it. Somebody being
- 18:33Speaker 5: that creative, like going in thinking I need one thing
- 18:36Speaker 5: and then being willing to pivot that dramatically. How often
- 18:40Speaker 5: does that happen now in modern trade deadlines?
- 18:45Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm not sure at all, but it's very interesting.
- 18:50Speaker 6: Last thing for me about the Phillies here, Kyle Schwarmer
- 18:54Speaker 6: been struggling ever since coming back from the issues that
- 18:57Speaker 6: he's been having, you know, with the injuries and the
- 19:00Speaker 6: lower back and all that stuff. Any concern there or
- 19:04Speaker 6: is this just trying to get you know, back going
- 19:07Speaker 6: a little bit more, getting some more swings.
- 19:10Speaker 5: Todd? I think there is some concern. You know, you're
- 19:12Speaker 5: a home run derby veteran, right, Kosh Warber almost didn't
- 19:16Speaker 5: do the derby because of his back. He's only hit
- 19:19Speaker 5: one homer since the derby. It's interesting that Jordan Walker
- 19:22Speaker 5: is hi none okay, but that's just a little aside
- 19:25Speaker 5: for me. That's great, you know, for the Phillies to
- 19:30Speaker 5: win in October, assuming they get to October, they need
- 19:34Speaker 5: fifty homer Kyshwarber, not this version. And I don't know
- 19:39Speaker 5: exactly what's going on. Matt geld might colleague get the
- 19:42Speaker 5: athletic went and sought Kyle out the other day and said,
- 19:46Speaker 5: I noticed you haven't been hitting on the field early
- 19:48Speaker 5: like you've always done. What's happening? And he said to him,
- 19:52Speaker 5: I'm not hurt, but he is managing that back situation.
- 19:58Speaker 5: And I wasn't there last night, but it sounds like
- 20:02Speaker 5: he did go out and hit early on the field
- 20:06Speaker 5: for the first time in a long time, got two hits.
- 20:08Speaker 5: So let's see where it leads, because who's more pivotal
- 20:11Speaker 5: to that offense than him.
- 20:14Speaker 7: I also think it was interesting you during your interview
- 20:17Speaker 7: you mentioned that Dave went out there the first day
- 20:20Speaker 7: after these trades were made and saw all the guys
- 20:22Speaker 7: out there during early work. You kind of talk about
- 20:24Speaker 7: his comments about that, how kind of fired him up
- 20:26Speaker 7: seeing these guys out there really working hard at their
- 20:28Speaker 7: new positions.
- 20:30Speaker 5: Yeah, Brad, I was really interested in that. And I mean,
- 20:33Speaker 5: you kind of know how it works. So I said
- 20:35Speaker 5: to Dave, you know, it can be kind of scary
- 20:38Speaker 5: to disrupt your team as much as you just did.
- 20:41Speaker 5: It can also be energizing. It can also be kind
- 20:44Speaker 5: of a way to challenge your players to play a
- 20:47Speaker 5: different way, to try to win a different way, and
- 20:50Speaker 5: that can that can be very energizing. And Dave said
- 20:54Speaker 5: he went out the next day and he sat in
- 20:57Speaker 5: his executive box and he watched the pre game work
- 21:00Speaker 5: and he thought there was a level of energy that
- 21:03Speaker 5: he hadn't seen. And I mean, I don't know what.
- 21:07Speaker 5: I don't know if you can ride that for two
- 21:08Speaker 5: months or three months. But it is interesting how good
- 21:14Speaker 5: baseball players can respond to being challenged, and good leaders
- 21:20Speaker 5: aren't afraid to challenge people, to challenge their players, to
- 21:24Speaker 5: challenge the people who work under them. All of that
- 21:27Speaker 5: is going on here. If if Allies win the World Series,
- 21:30Speaker 5: it'll be a hell of a movie. That's all I
- 21:32Speaker 5: got to say.
- 21:33Speaker 3: For sure.
- 21:34Speaker 6: For sure, And you talk about leaders, and one that
- 21:37Speaker 6: comes to mind Aaron Judge. There hasn't been much talk
- 21:41Speaker 6: about him. It seems like I'm not saying it's on
- 21:44Speaker 6: the low, but it doesn't seem good, Like what from
- 21:47Speaker 6: what you've heard or what you've seen or anything along
- 21:50Speaker 6: and is on. Can you give a little perspective of
- 21:52Speaker 6: what is going on here, because it seems like it's
- 21:56Speaker 6: this injury is taking a lot longer than expected and
- 21:59Speaker 6: you know aren't coming and the fans are starting to
- 22:02Speaker 6: understand and get a little word.
- 22:04Speaker 5: Hey, I got a lot of the same questions that
- 22:06Speaker 5: you guys have, and the answers to those questions will
- 22:10Speaker 5: probably determine how the Yankee season turns out, because think
- 22:16Speaker 5: about the injury. If you're Aaron Judge, then you do
- 22:21Speaker 5: what you do for a living, which is hit Baseball's
- 22:24Speaker 5: are really long ways. Is there any more worries and
- 22:27Speaker 5: injury than a broken rib? And don't you have to
- 22:31Speaker 5: be extremely careful patient about rehabbing an injury like that.
- 22:37Speaker 5: And that's obviously what's happening. It's what he's doing, it's
- 22:41Speaker 5: what his team is encouraging to do. But I don't
- 22:45Speaker 5: think they know exactly what life is like on the
- 22:49Speaker 5: other side. I know other teams have been asking me
- 22:52Speaker 5: what I think what I've heard because they're wondering the
- 22:55Speaker 5: same stuff. This is pretty clear. The Yankees have been
- 22:59Speaker 5: one of the worst offensive teams in the sport since
- 23:03Speaker 5: Aaron Judge got hurt. And they've got the pitching part
- 23:07Speaker 5: of this all lined up. You know, their rotation, their
- 23:12Speaker 5: staff can match up with any team in any series
- 23:17Speaker 5: in October. But their lineup is in anywhere near the
- 23:22Speaker 5: same force without not just Aaron Judge showing up, but
- 23:26Speaker 5: Aaron Judge being Aaron Judge. And is he gonna be
- 23:29Speaker 5: that guy? Is he gonna be able to swing as
- 23:31Speaker 5: hard as he normally swings and take the approach that
- 23:34Speaker 5: he normally has with a broken rib? Tell me the answer.
- 23:38Speaker 5: I forgot to go to medical school this week.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a great point. Is sure, he's probably gonna
- 23:44Speaker 2: be back, but what's he.
- 23:44Speaker 5: Gonna look like.
- 23:45Speaker 1: That's a huge part of the story here, you know.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I mean, he's deep into his career, he's got a
- 23:50Speaker 1: nice contract, he's not gonna hold back, and if it's
- 23:52Speaker 1: gonna hurt him long term, he's still gonna come back.
- 23:54Speaker 1: But what's he going to look like is a big
- 23:56Speaker 1: piece of the puzzle here. Jason's great point, and thanks
- 23:59Speaker 1: for hopping on with us on the way out here.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I do want to plug so the article form is there,
- 24:05Speaker 1: but can you just tell the audience also how they
- 24:07Speaker 1: can get the full conversation that you have with Dave
- 24:10Speaker 1: Dombrowski via podcast form coming up too.
- 24:13Speaker 5: Scott, I can do that. This is the Starkfield podcast.
- 24:16Speaker 5: It's part of our Rates and Barrels feed. It'll be
- 24:20Speaker 5: first thing Saturday morning. You'll find it on YouTube and
- 24:23Speaker 5: everywhere you get your podcasts. Again, one of the most
- 24:26Speaker 5: candid conversations I've ever had with any deal maker after
- 24:30Speaker 5: a deadline. So I strongly encourage people, if they care
- 24:34Speaker 5: about this stuff, the check it out.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Yep. I got a long ride this weekend.
- 24:38Speaker 1: I will be all over it listening to that one
- 24:41Speaker 1: every single word. Thank you for hopping on, Jason, really appreciated.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Thanks for doing the interview too, because I love this
- 24:46Speaker 1: stuff and we'll talk to you down the road.
- 24:49Speaker 5: Love talking to you guys. Thanks
