- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:02daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:05from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:08Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17All right everyone, Happy Monday.
- 0:20I hope you guys had a great weekend.
- 0:22I had. It was fine.
- 0:26That was so like won't, won't. But honestly, that's kind of how
- 0:29it felt. I'm feeling really like burnt
- 0:32out at the moment and I'm just trying to like get through every
- 0:35day. I feel like this is me having a
- 0:38bit of a revelation, just chatting through my revelation
- 0:41with you guys. I feel as though the beginning
- 0:45of the year was so crazy and I was like, all right, I just have
- 0:48to make it to like, you know, halfway through the year.
- 0:50Like, I would literally fantasize about June, and I
- 0:55would just think to myself, by June everything will be like, so
- 0:59much better. I'll be so much calmer.
- 1:01I'll have a new routine in place.
- 1:03I'll feel so much more in control.
- 1:05And obviously June is in like 2 weeks, not even.
- 1:08And I'm like, Oh no, no. I'm just as frazzled and chaotic
- 1:12as I was at the beginning of the year.
- 1:14A different vibe for sure. I'm much less anxious and like I
- 1:17do have a lot more under control than I did then, but now I just
- 1:20feel out of control in other ways.
- 1:24But I was talking to my hairdresser, Alex.
- 1:27I've been going to him for like 100 years.
- 1:28It feels truly, I think it's been, I think it's probably been
- 1:31five years, five or six years, so maybe not quite 100.
- 1:35But he owns the salon and you know, he's so he's also like a
- 1:38business owner and we talk a lot about stuff like that.
- 1:42And I was kind of telling him, like, I'm really struggling
- 1:44right now because I think I was looking to this time of the year
- 1:49and thinking, Oh my God, it's going to be so much better.
- 1:51And now I'm at this time of the year and I'm like, I don't feel
- 1:53any more like, in control. I don't feel like I have work
- 1:57under control really yet. And I feel like I'm just always
- 2:00catching up constantly. And I don't have time for, like
- 2:03my friends or to hang out with Sean or like anything.
- 2:06He gave me some good advice. He gave me the perspective of,
- 2:10like, you know, when you own a business, some years are really
- 2:15chaotic and some years are much more chill.
- 2:18And that's part of the roller coaster.
- 2:20So you just have to accept that this year is a year where you're
- 2:23going to feel out of control, possibly the whole year.
- 2:25And like, you were going to be working crazy hours seven days a
- 2:29week to catch up and to find this new normal and to get the
- 2:32business to where it needs to be so that you can take a small
- 2:35step back. But with everything that
- 2:36happened at the start of this year, does kind of feel like I'm
- 2:39back, not definitely not at square one, but like I'm back a
- 2:42couple years. I feel like I, you know, I took
- 2:44the business back a little bit. So, you know, I'm just trying to
- 2:49accept that this year is going to be really wild and I'm not
- 2:54going to have a lot of rest. I'm not going to have a lot of
- 2:58time to do gym or hang out with my friends.
- 3:00Like I just have to be laser focused on the business and I
- 3:04need to accept that instead of like trying to resist that and
- 3:07waiting for it to like chill out because it might not chill out
- 3:11for the rest of this year. And I just need to be like, OK
- 3:13with that. So that is what I worked through
- 3:15this weekend. I'm still not fully accepting of
- 3:19it. Like, I'm still kind of like,
- 3:20are you fucking kidding me? But I have come to that
- 3:23realization that I need to accept it.
- 3:25All right, let's get into the stories for today.
- 3:28So I have two stories for you guys.
- 3:31The first story is a bit of like a darker one.
- 3:34And then the second story I'm just obsessed with.
- 3:36OK, so the first story is that a Tik Toker is claiming that Gypsy
- 3:40Rose Blanchard is striking her videos to silence her
- 3:44Munchausen's By proxy story. TikTok, creator at Adaptive
- 3:47Kate, has made some serious claims against Gypsy Rose
- 3:50Blanchard. Kate is a Munchausen's by proxy
- 3:53survivor who makes content sharing the story of how she
- 3:56faced medical child abuse by her mother.
- 3:58Kate has over 150,000 followers and has gone viral several times
- 4:02for her story. In a new video posted last week,
- 4:05Kate opened up about how she feels Gypsy wants quote full
- 4:08ownership of Munchausen's by proxy as condition to use
- 4:12basically as a marketing tool to make money, and as a result
- 4:16Gypsy is trying to silence other survivors.
- 4:19Kate also said that she believes Gypsy has started sharing
- 4:22elements of Kate's own experience with her mother and
- 4:25trying to pass those elements of that story off as Gypsy story.
- 4:30I can't say her name because she will have my video removed, but
- 4:34you will know who this is about. There is the face in My Child
- 4:37Syndrome, my proxy out there. This face of it believes they
- 4:42have sole ownership of it as if it is an advertisement title.
- 4:48They are against other survivors sharing their story.
- 4:51This particular face of it has targeted my account, has trolled
- 4:56me in my life. So stepmom has told me and they
- 5:00master for my videos and she wants me to stop telling my
- 5:03story. I have been on TikTok for three
- 5:06years sharing my story. I had no issues until she got
- 5:10out. I have been targeted by her most
- 5:13recently, but even prior to that I was targeted by her stands as
- 5:17they call them. So I think no matter, you know,
- 5:21kind of how you feel about Gypsy, I know there's a huge
- 5:24portion of the Internet that feels she shouldn't have gone to
- 5:26jail. And other portions of the
- 5:28Internet that feel she should have gone to jail for sure.
- 5:31And that, you know, we shouldn't be kind of platforming her in
- 5:34this way and like celebrating her as like an influencer.
- 5:37Now. I think this particular story
- 5:40and just what we've seen from Gypsy since she's been released,
- 5:44there was a lot of concern when she started to become like an
- 5:48influencer and people started like standing her and stuff that
- 5:51it was going to go sideways. And a lot of questions about
- 5:55like what she wanted to gain from all of this and what this
- 5:59was going to do to the Munchausen by proxy community
- 6:02but also Gypsies mental health. And I think that we're watching
- 6:06some of that play out. Like, I don't.
- 6:08Obviously we don't know if what Kate is saying is true, but
- 6:10let's say it is. I think we are kind of watching
- 6:13the results of somebody coming out of jail after such a
- 6:17traumatic, I mean life that they led.
- 6:20And then getting sent to prison and then coming out and being
- 6:23like a full-fledged celebrity, being celebrated.
- 6:27The Internet making like fan edits of her just absolutely
- 6:31turning her into a meme but also this like pedestaled public
- 6:36figure. And I think it would be too much
- 6:40for kind of anyone to handle. Especially somebody who has the
- 6:43experience in this back story like Gypsy has, you know,
- 6:47getting that famous that quickly, that much praise, that
- 6:51much money, that much excitement, all these
- 6:53interviews. Like she, it was a shitstorm
- 6:56from the minute that she left prison.
- 6:58And I believe, you know, fame and money and accolades that,
- 7:02you know, that goes to anyone's head.
- 7:04And so I can see if Kate's story is true.
- 7:08I can see how you would get protective of that thing that
- 7:12you feel like makes you different, that makes you
- 7:14famous, that gives you that money, you know, that has
- 7:16basically built your career. You would get probably
- 7:19protective of that thing. So I could see how Gypsy has
- 7:24become kind of weirdly protective over being the famous
- 7:28one who, you know, experienced Munchausen by proxy.
- 7:32And I can see how any person might get caught up in the fame
- 7:35and the glitz and the glamour of what she's currently
- 7:37experiencing and not want that to go away.
- 7:41And being fearful that maybe there's not room for, you know,
- 7:44two quote UN quote famous Munchausen's by proxy girlies on
- 7:48the Internet 'cause I think if this is true, if she is striking
- 7:51her videos, I believe that's probably where it's coming from.
- 7:53All right. The next story that I have for
- 7:55you guys, OK, so galvanized square Steel talk is the latest
- 8:01niche corner of the Internet to go viral.
- 8:05This story is for the marketing and the social media girlies.
- 8:07I mean, it's for anybody that wants to stay in the know, but
- 8:10if you guys work in that space, you have to jump on this trend
- 8:14like ASAP. So we're saying goodbye to
- 8:18industrial grade glycine and we are saying hello to galvanized
- 8:21square steel. So the latest niche to sweep
- 8:24TikTok is AI generated videos, mocking renovation videos that
- 8:29turn small spaces into functional homes.
- 8:31So I mean, I'm sure we've all seen that there's like full HGTV
- 8:34shows about this, right? It's like you take a tiny little
- 8:37New York apartment or some tiny little space and you or like a
- 8:40van or something and you turn it into something very beautiful
- 8:43and fully functioning. So it's like mocking that type
- 8:46of content. OK, so each video involves some
- 8:49AI generated person. You usually see them in the
- 8:51video when it starts saying they've saved all their money or
- 8:54they inherited some money or something and they have
- 8:57purchased this tiny little room. Like some of the rooms are
- 9:00literally like a square meter, like that's how small these
- 9:04rooms are. Many say that the room is even
- 9:06too small for their grandfathers coffin.
- 9:10That's one specific element that is for some reason just this
- 9:14through line in most of the videos is there's like a mention
- 9:18of a grandfather's coffin they say quote.
- 9:20Now let's see how we can turn this into a fully functional
- 9:23house. And then they remove the windows
- 9:25or the walls. And you're watching this like in
- 9:28AI, like you're watching it happen on the video.
- 9:30And they use galvanized square steel that extend outward to
- 9:35expand the room. And then they almost all also
- 9:39quote, borrow some screws from their aunt to secure these steel
- 9:45frames. So again, it's the grandfather's
- 9:46coffin and the ants, screws that are like these two very specific
- 9:53and bizarre elements that like tie up the meme in these videos.
- 9:58If the video has these two things they are like truly part
- 10:00of this niche. And then you cover that steel in
- 10:05eco friendly wood veneers again. So galvanized square steel, tiny
- 10:11square meter room, grandfather's coffin ants, screws and eco
- 10:17friendly wood veneers. Those are like the five main
- 10:19elements of these videos. So this meme is like another Don
- 10:22Juan Jinlong situation, Another like glycine industrial Gray
- 10:26glycine situation where it's so bizarre that users are now
- 10:30creating their own content around it.
- 10:33And actual renovation and home building videos are now flooded
- 10:37with comments from people asking if they're using like galvanized
- 10:40square steel and eco friendly wood veneers and if they got the
- 10:43screws from their aunt. It's so funny, people are
- 10:47literally making like fan edits for galvanized square steel.
- 10:51So I believe that this niche, it's been kind of going on for a
- 10:55few weeks. Like Annabelle said that her
- 10:57friend showed her this side of TikTok a couple weeks ago, but
- 11:00over the weekend it has like literally exploded.
- 11:03It's like with John Wanjin Long, like they started their accounts
- 11:06in December, but then like over the course of two days, like the
- 11:10whole concept of them and like the Glycine and all that like
- 11:13exploded. So we're at that precipice right
- 11:15now where it's about to explode. So if you guys want to make
- 11:18content around that, definitely get on it ASAP because I think
- 11:22this will be another one that comes and goes really quickly,
- 11:24but it's so niche and internetti right now.
- 11:28It's so funny. All right guys, well that's it
- 11:30for Mini Scroll today. I hope you enjoyed this episode.
