Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB Week 2 Postgame Show: Jalen Hurts Does It AGAIN In Fourth Quarter Slaying Of Titans
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, welcome to the Inside the Birds post-game show. Week
- 0:13Speaker 1: two is in the books. I'm Jeff Mosher, that's Adam Kaplan.
- 0:16Speaker 2: The Eagles pull victory out of the jaws of defeat.
- 0:20Speaker 2: They beat the Titans on a last-second drive, and it
- 0:24Speaker 2: looked like all hope was lost, but they win 24-20. Adam,
- 0:28Speaker 2: it just feels, I know it's two weeks, but the
- 0:31Speaker 2: Eagles have been doing this for years, right?
- 0:33Speaker 1: It just feels like this is.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Going to be another one of those years where The
- 0:38Speaker 2: fans get sent to the medicine cabinet for the Pepto,
- 0:40Speaker 2: for the, what do they call it, the Rolaids. I mean,
- 0:43Speaker 2: this team just loves to kind of lull you at
- 0:47Speaker 2: times and then snap out of it when they need
- 0:49Speaker 2: it the most.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that's funny. I was texting a friend of mine
- 0:52Speaker 3: late in the game. He goes, what do you think?
- 0:54Speaker 3: I said, Hertz is pretty out of control here. I
- 0:56Speaker 3: know the pass rush is starting to get to him.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I said, they're going to pull it out. I said,
- 1:00Speaker 3: I just feel like he's going to pull it out somehow.
- 1:02Speaker 3: You never know what the way it's going to look.
- 1:04Speaker 3: And they did. And Darius Cooper, the hero. So my
- 1:07Speaker 3: opening thoughts would be, despite the injuries, the big one
- 1:11Speaker 3: at Dallas Goddard, who was to the only positives is
- 1:14Speaker 3: that he was never downgraded. He was listed as questionable.
- 1:18Speaker 3: And he was also in uniform the entire time, but
- 1:20Speaker 3: he never came back in after the catch effect. You
- 1:23Speaker 3: could see emotion. He said, hey, come get me. He
- 1:26Speaker 3: had to come out. And he never went back in
- 1:28Speaker 3: early in the first quarter. And then and then Barkley
- 1:32Speaker 3: had the stinger. He missed most of the game, did
- 1:34Speaker 3: come back, and then left late. So that's obviously a concern.
- 1:38Speaker 3: And we'll learn more over the next 48 hours. But
- 1:40Speaker 3: it's a gutsy win. This is a surviving advance game.
- 1:43Speaker 3: They found a way to win. Didn't run the ball well,
- 1:46Speaker 3: but Hurts was magnificent when it counted. Yeah, the two
- 1:49Speaker 3: picks were clearly on him. The last one to Smitty,
- 1:51Speaker 3: he beat the defense. I threw it to the Harris
- 1:54Speaker 3: the nickel. But overall, I really like what I saw
- 1:57Speaker 3: from Hurts. And by the way, and we'll say it again,
- 2:00Speaker 3: for those of you who say he won't throw the
- 2:01Speaker 3: ball over the middle, I present the first half to you.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Do you know how many throws he had over the inside?
- 2:05Speaker 3: The numbers is what the term is. Right. The phrase.
- 2:08Speaker 3: I mean, I was like, this is like not what
- 2:09Speaker 3: they've done in the past. This is true West coast offense.
- 2:13Speaker 3: And they did it without Goddard. That's another plus and
- 2:16Speaker 3: hurts his cap and Sean Mannion's cap. And it's like,
- 2:19Speaker 3: you know, he could have just bailed on it. Mannion.
- 2:20Speaker 3: He didn't, he said, we're going to run our offense.
- 2:22Speaker 3: And he did.
- 2:22Speaker 1: You know what?
- 2:24Speaker 3: Smitty was huge. Go ahead.
- 2:26Speaker 2: What I really liked about this game, Adam is on
- 2:29Speaker 2: a day where. your offensive line is reconfigured and it's struggling.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Protections weren't great. Free rides too often to the quarterback,
- 2:39Speaker 2: which is not always on protection, but on your scheme.
- 2:42Speaker 2: When you're going through a lull in the third quarter
- 2:44Speaker 2: and then your back is against the wall, it doesn't
- 2:47Speaker 2: become then for this team about the play call, the
- 2:52Speaker 2: protection scheme, all that. It comes down to do your
- 2:55Speaker 2: best players make the plays they have to make. And
- 2:59Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts and Devontae Smith especially with Saquon not being 100%.
- 3:04Speaker 2: At that point were their two best players, and they
- 3:07Speaker 2: needed them. And I know that Cooper had the touchdown catch,
- 3:09Speaker 2: and it was a very nice– it was a well-schemed play,
- 3:12Speaker 2: but it was all about Jalen Hurts and Devontae Smith,
- 3:16Speaker 2: like you said, in that rhythm, executing the West Coast offense,
- 3:20Speaker 2: pitch and catch, toe-tapping from Devontae Smith. That's what you–
- 3:24Speaker 2: when you got talent like that and they come through–
- 3:27Speaker 2: You can't take it for granted because it doesn't always happen.
- 3:29Speaker 2: It doesn't happen every game. That was really poetry in
- 3:32Speaker 2: motion on that final drive. Yeah.
- 3:34Speaker 3: And this, by the way, folks, as I've pointed out,
- 3:36Speaker 3: I don't know how many times this year, and I'm not,
- 3:39Speaker 3: Eagles have enough talent at receiver, but I've pointed out
- 3:42Speaker 3: the Niners game. You don't have to have an abundance
- 3:44Speaker 3: of talent in the West Coast ovens to win. You
- 3:48Speaker 3: need to run the scheme efficiently. Guys have to execute.
- 3:50Speaker 3: They're doing that. They did it way better this game.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And it was impressive. And Darius Cooper, who, He beat
- 3:58Speaker 3: out Hollywood Brown. Hollywood Brown was used on two runs.
- 4:01Speaker 3: One was a nice one. The second one was called
- 4:02Speaker 3: back due to penalty. But he's clearly the four. Mekhi
- 4:08Speaker 3: Lemon is the three. You continue to use motion. We'll
- 4:11Speaker 3: get to defense later. I would say motion was way
- 4:14Speaker 3: more effective in this game than it was in week one.
- 4:17Speaker 3: There's more motion to motion. I know that this is
- 4:19Speaker 3: going to be part of their offense. They mixed in
- 4:21Speaker 3: under center and shotgun.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Okay?
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yep.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Looked to me like they did more shotgun in the
- 4:26Speaker 3: first game, but I don't have the numbers yet.
- 4:28Speaker 1: No, I would agree. I think so too.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yeah. Yep. And we should mention, we knew Drew Kennan
- 4:31Speaker 3: was going to start. That was a lock. It was just,
- 4:33Speaker 3: he's going to start at center left guard. He started center.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Jurgens moved to left guard. Drew is a natural center.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Now this is his second start at center. He's only
- 4:41Speaker 3: started two games. The last one before this one was at,
- 4:44Speaker 3: was against the commandos week 18 last year. But overall
- 4:47Speaker 3: they held up. They did give up a lot of pressure,
- 4:50Speaker 3: but they also stood tall when it mattered. Boy, was
- 4:52Speaker 3: their protection great for Hurts and he delivered big time. Yeah.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Very, very– on that last drive, absolutely.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yes, on that last drive, yes.
- 4:58Speaker 1: On that last drive, they were good.
- 5:00Speaker 2: So let's talk about the offense because they were facing
- 5:02Speaker 2: an uphill battle from the start for two reasons. One,
- 5:05Speaker 2: obviously the offensive line was reconfigured. They made the decision
- 5:08Speaker 2: to go with Kendall at center, which is his natural position.
- 5:11Speaker 2: We'll get into that in a second. Move Juergens to guard.
- 5:15Speaker 2: And listen, it was ugly at times. Clearly, the Titans
- 5:19Speaker 2: were ready for it. They put a lot of guys
- 5:21Speaker 2: at the line of scrimmage. And we said this on
- 5:23Speaker 2: the pregame show. You can't factor in week one. We knew,
- 5:27Speaker 2: we discussed all the players that the Titans brought in
- 5:29Speaker 2: on defense, especially on the front. Maybe in the back end,
- 5:32Speaker 2: they're still leaky, which we saw. But they've got some
- 5:34Speaker 2: pretty decent players up front, including Jeffrey Simmons, we know about.
- 5:38Speaker 2: And we thought that they were going to respond better.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And they did.
- 5:41Speaker 2: And I thought some of the scheming that Salah did
- 5:43Speaker 2: to try to create free rushers, to try to create
- 5:46Speaker 2: one-on-one matchups against Juergens and against Kendall worked for the
- 5:49Speaker 2: most part. Because after the first two drives, three drives,
- 5:52Speaker 2: I mean, the Eagles really had trouble Jalen was running
- 5:55Speaker 2: around a lot, but I will say Jalen made some absolutely.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Terrific throws in this game. He hit wicks while he
- 6:03Speaker 1: was getting clobbered by Jeffrey Simmons. He hit the touchdown.
- 6:07Speaker 1: He threw to Devante in the first half.
- 6:09Speaker 2: It was a beautiful, like just roll a little bit
- 6:11Speaker 2: out of the pocket, make a nice throw. What was it,
- 6:15Speaker 2: third and nine on the second drive where he hits
- 6:17Speaker 2: Lemon for 14 yards over the middle, moves the chains.
- 6:21Speaker 2: All right, Jeffrey Simmons says we want to make Jalen
- 6:22Speaker 2: Hurts into a quarterback.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Well, guess what?
- 6:25Speaker 2: His best plays today came from inside the pocket. So
- 6:28Speaker 2: Jeffrey Simmons and the Titans, you wanted to make Hurts
- 6:30Speaker 2: a quarterback? He was today in this game, and they
- 6:34Speaker 2: paid the price. So I really think when your structure
- 6:37Speaker 2: is hurt, right, you're running back, your star player is hurt,
- 6:41Speaker 2: banged up. He came back in the game. but the
- 6:43Speaker 2: running game overall was not good again. And protection was
- 6:46Speaker 2: having issues for Hertz to make those throws to survive
- 6:50Speaker 2: a lull and then come back with the fourth quarter drive.
- 6:53Speaker 2: It says a lot about him.
- 6:54Speaker 3: And not taking that sack or intentional grounding. Hertz somehow
- 6:59Speaker 3: muscled it because he's having a strong base. It's strong.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Lower body is so critical. It just, that's a huge
- 7:07Speaker 3: play not to get a penalty there because it's a
- 7:08Speaker 3: loss of down. The clock runs off. They have no
- 7:10Speaker 3: timeouts left.
- 7:10Speaker 1: So, right.
- 7:12Speaker 3: That was big. And, To do that, again, to have
- 7:14Speaker 3: a game-winning drive with no timeouts left, I don't care
- 7:16Speaker 3: what you say about the Titans' defense. They have a
- 7:18Speaker 3: good front. They're playing a wide nine. They got heat
- 7:21Speaker 3: on Hurts repeatedly. Yes. I mean, they were credit with
- 7:24Speaker 3: six hits. I'd like to know how many actual quarterback
- 7:26Speaker 3: pressures they had.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Sure.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Simmons was an absolute man in the kids'– Stonehouse, Stackhouse,
- 7:31Speaker 3: whatever his name is.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Yep. Yeah. He came in, and we talked about John
- 7:37Speaker 3: Franklin Myers as well. Stonehouse, yeah. Yeah. But overall– This
- 7:42Speaker 3: is a gutsy win. It's a gutsy win. They got
- 7:44Speaker 3: some stuff they got to clean up. They have some injuries.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Hunt left the game late. I don't know what it is.
- 7:49Speaker 3: They didn't list them because it was so late. We'll
- 7:51Speaker 3: see if he's listed in the injury report. But they
- 7:53Speaker 3: got to lick their wounds. They have some extra time
- 7:55Speaker 3: because they play at Chicago next Monday night.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:58Speaker 3: So the practice week won't start until Thursday. That's when
- 8:00Speaker 3: the first injury report will come out. But overall, this
- 8:03Speaker 3: is a pretty good win. And you have to be
- 8:04Speaker 3: pleased with a passing game. I don't care what people say.
- 8:07Speaker 3: The passing game, other than the protection issues, was really good.
- 8:11Speaker 3: But the run game, the big negative, the run game
- 8:13Speaker 3: is awful, to be honest with you. I give Bixby
- 8:17Speaker 3: credit and Shipley credit having to play major roles, but
- 8:22Speaker 3: they cannot really run very well inside. They had a
- 8:24Speaker 3: couple nice runs. Bixby, physically, I mean, yards after contact
- 8:30Speaker 3: was nice, but overall they can't run the ball very well.
- 8:32Speaker 3: But I say that they control the clock and save
- 8:36Speaker 3: the third quarter. They just kept going free and out.
- 8:39Speaker 3: But they dominate time possession in the first half. And overall,
- 8:41Speaker 3: they dominated because they had the ball late. But they
- 8:44Speaker 3: got to run the ball better. That's something they have
- 8:46Speaker 3: to keep working on. I agree.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I think you can dominate time and possession like that
- 8:51Speaker 2: against the Titans. I don't know if you can do
- 8:52Speaker 2: that against the Bears, the Jags, and the Rams coming up.
- 8:55Speaker 1: So I do agree.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I think if they don't figure out a way to
- 8:59Speaker 2: run the ball better and more effectively, it's going to
- 9:01Speaker 2: be trouble.
- 9:01Speaker 1: And I don't know. I think they do have to reevaluate.
- 9:07Speaker 2: What they did on the offensive line in terms of
- 9:10Speaker 2: personnel usage by playing Kendall at center and Juergens at
- 9:13Speaker 2: left guard, they have to make sure inside the building
- 9:16Speaker 2: that Kendall really is the best guy.
- 9:18Speaker 1: And it's not maybe playing Lampkin at center. I don't know.
- 9:21Speaker 2: They just have to, what I'm, I'm not trying to
- 9:23Speaker 2: offer a solution. What I'm just saying is they got
- 9:25Speaker 2: to look at the tape and say, is all of
- 9:27Speaker 2: this something, a foundation we can build on there's correctable
- 9:29Speaker 2: mistakes with experience, or are we playing the right people
- 9:32Speaker 2: in the right spots? I'm not saying they're not, I'm
- 9:35Speaker 2: just saying they need to look at it and make
- 9:37Speaker 2: sure they're doing, the right things because it was ugly
- 9:39Speaker 2: there for a little, for, for a while, actually.
- 9:43Speaker 3: It was the interior. I mean, it is again, it's
- 9:47Speaker 3: Kendall's natural spot, but they made a decision earlier in
- 9:49Speaker 3: the week as we understood it, that they were going
- 9:51Speaker 3: to go with Kendall at, at, at center. Although I,
- 9:54Speaker 3: I know they could try, try some configurations, but it's just,
- 9:58Speaker 3: it made so much sense. I know it, laugh when
- 10:00Speaker 3: the media somehow bought that because when Jalen was asked about, oh,
- 10:05Speaker 3: you know, who you've been working with, I've been working
- 10:07Speaker 3: with Kim the whole time. Obviously, he wasn't going to
- 10:09Speaker 3: give it away. But bottom line is they stuck with it.
- 10:12Speaker 3: They stuck with what they practiced mostly. And you're right.
- 10:15Speaker 3: It's a fair point. But you don't want to keep
- 10:17Speaker 3: yo-yoing this because Dickerson's got to buy rules, got to
- 10:20Speaker 3: miss at least three more games. And you don't want to,
- 10:22Speaker 3: you don't want to go back and forth. It's not,
- 10:24Speaker 3: it's not for the continuity and the timing. Right. And, and,
- 10:27Speaker 3: and for Hertz, he wants to know who's going to,
- 10:29Speaker 3: who's going to be snapping the ball to him. You
- 10:31Speaker 3: got to get that straight during the week. And now again,
- 10:33Speaker 3: they do have extra time for the coaches to go
- 10:35Speaker 3: over it. But I'm just, if you're an Eagles fan
- 10:39Speaker 3: and I guess 95% of you are who are listening,
- 10:42Speaker 3: you have to be pleased with the passing game. You
- 10:44Speaker 3: really have to, I, again, they don't control who they play. Look,
- 10:48Speaker 3: as you pointed out, they had significant protection problems. Hurts
- 10:50Speaker 3: still dropped dimes. Yep.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yep.

- 12:40Speaker 1: to work out.
- 12:41Speaker 2: I get to the gym at least three times a week.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I try to focus on certain muscle groups, my arms,
- 12:46Speaker 2: my legs, and it used to be really frustrating for
- 12:49Speaker 2: me to find jeans that fit someone like myself who
- 12:53Speaker 2: likes to work out. Sometimes those jeans can be awkward
- 12:56Speaker 2: and tight and you're sitting in a chair and you're
- 12:58Speaker 2: constantly pulling at your jeans, trying to get them to
- 13:01Speaker 2: fit you. Sometimes it feels like you have to buy
- 13:04Speaker 2: jeans that make you choose between your waist or your thighs.
- 13:08Speaker 2: But thankfully I found the perfect jean. It's different from
- 13:12Speaker 2: all other jean companies out there. especially for guys with
- 13:15Speaker 2: athletic builds. They actually let me move like a normal
- 13:18Speaker 2: human being. I can bend down and tie my shoes.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I can squat to pick up something without feeling restricted.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I can actually do a full squat, you know, bending
- 13:27Speaker 2: down to pick something up without feeling like I'm about
- 13:29Speaker 2: to blow a seam. You know, the old standard jean sizing,
- 13:32Speaker 2: it wasn't designed to fit guys who squat or deadlift,
- 13:35Speaker 2: play sports, or just do anything that actually builds your legs.
- 13:38Speaker 2: But the perfect jean Thank you.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Google the perfect gene and use code.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Birds 15 for 15% off. That's 15% off first order
- 14:09Speaker 2: plus free shipping at the perfect gene dot NYC, or
- 14:12Speaker 2: just Google the perfect gene and use code.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Birds 15 for 15% off.
- 14:17Speaker 3: All right.
- 14:17Speaker 2: So I'm glad you brought that up because I want
- 14:19Speaker 2: to revisit a conversation we had in July. All right.
- 14:23Speaker 2: And it's some, it became polarizing because another outlet had
- 14:26Speaker 2: the conversation and.
- 14:27Speaker 1: People thought it was rabble rousing.
- 14:28Speaker 2: It's not, are you willing to accept more, interceptions from
- 14:32Speaker 2: Jalen hurts leads to more touchdowns because he's taking more chances.
- 14:37Speaker 1: He's throwing the ball where you want it.
- 14:39Speaker 2: We, we use Sam Darnold last year, who's a super
- 14:41Speaker 2: bowl champion, but he threw like 14 interceptions.
- 14:44Speaker 4: Right.
- 14:44Speaker 2: And I will point out that the first interception was
- 14:48Speaker 2: a terrible throw.
- 14:49Speaker 1: It was not good. There was nothing there. He shouldn't
- 14:50Speaker 1: never thrown it.
- 14:51Speaker 2: But after that, he came back on the second possession
- 14:55Speaker 2: and made a couple of those really nice throws that
- 14:57Speaker 2: I was, that I was discussing, you know, especially the
- 15:00Speaker 2: third and eight, throw to Makai Lemon that got them
- 15:04Speaker 2: close to the end zone.
- 15:05Speaker 1: They scored a touchdown. Then he came back with more.
- 15:06Speaker 2: And then of course his second interception on him, he
- 15:09Speaker 2: was hit while throwing. So I, if that's what left
- 15:12Speaker 2: it under thrown, I'm not going to kill him too much.
- 15:13Speaker 1: The first one was.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Worse, but nonetheless, he came back and then leads him
- 15:17Speaker 2: down the field. So as long as the interceptions aren't awful,
- 15:23Speaker 2: the first one was awful. The second one, he got hit.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Okay.
- 15:26Speaker 2: As long as it's compensating and you're taking, you're, working
- 15:30Speaker 2: the same routes and you're not trying to say like,
- 15:33Speaker 2: we have to like settle it down and run more
- 15:35Speaker 2: because he did that, then I think you're okay.
- 15:38Speaker 3: I'm not that upset about the two interceptions. Okay. Even
- 15:41Speaker 3: if they would have gone down the field and stalled,
- 15:44Speaker 3: let's say it was a drop pass, I would have
- 15:45Speaker 3: no problem with those interceptions to respond to what you're saying.
- 15:49Speaker 3: I want to see an aggressive passing game. Okay. This
- 15:51Speaker 3: is aggressive. I know they got behind, but I love
- 15:55Speaker 3: that they're throwing in the middle of the field. They
- 15:56Speaker 3: reduced the receivership. This offense helps these guys get open, okay?
- 16:01Speaker 3: Wicks is not going to win on wide splits, which
- 16:04Speaker 3: means he's out wide in previous schemes. They're not asking
- 16:08Speaker 3: him to do that very much. It's three quarters or
- 16:10Speaker 3: half in or half out. They're not asking him to
- 16:13Speaker 3: go out totally wide. He's not going to win. He's
- 16:15Speaker 3: just not that talented. But the scheme, he knows this
- 16:17Speaker 3: is a thing that's big on Wicks. Tough as nails,
- 16:21Speaker 3: knows where to go. He's on time. He's where the
- 16:24Speaker 3: ball needs to be. Smitty and Hertz obviously have that chemistry.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Wicks and Hertz have that chemistry. Cooper and Hertz have
- 16:30Speaker 3: some chemistry, okay? They've used Cooper mainly to block, and
- 16:34Speaker 3: they sure as hell did today because they tried to
- 16:35Speaker 3: have him in after Goddard left. And Johnny Mudd, who's
- 16:39Speaker 3: averaged no more than 1.3 receptions per game over his career,
- 16:43Speaker 3: had two because they had to. In fact, they let
- 16:45Speaker 3: him up on the slot. I'm like, wait a minute.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Is that 83 Johnny Mudd? Because Grants and Kylan Grants
- 16:50Speaker 3: until the other side, he was inactive. Yes.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, on the other side, yes.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he was inactive. Like, oh, yeah, that's right.
- 16:57Speaker 3: They don't have another tight end. They should have EJ Jenkins,
- 16:59Speaker 3: who was a college receiver, but he could only block.
- 17:02Speaker 3: But Wicks has looked great. I mean, you know, look,
- 17:07Speaker 3: he's been great. It's working. I mean, it's working. Chicago
- 17:11Speaker 3: doesn't have a great secondary. It's okay. We'll look more
- 17:14Speaker 3: about that next week. But what we've learned through two
- 17:16Speaker 3: games is the positives are the passing game is developing.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Motion's working. They're doing a lot of different things. Hertz
- 17:24Speaker 3: is playing well. He's aggressive. You want that on your point.
- 17:28Speaker 3: I like what Mannion's doing. They're helping receivers. Receivers are
- 17:31Speaker 3: executing routes. Offensive line's got pretty significant issues on the
- 17:35Speaker 3: run game. It's a big problem. We'll see how they
- 17:39Speaker 3: have some injury problems now. They're going to have to
- 17:41Speaker 3: do something good tight end. I don't even care if
- 17:43Speaker 3: Goddard's cleared. Go get a tight end who can catch.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:49Speaker 3: I know Calcaterra's an IR. I get that.
- 17:52Speaker 1: But, boy, it's... I hear you. It's a problem.
- 17:59Speaker 2: I want to remind everybody listening, especially those who watch
- 18:02Speaker 2: Eagles games as fervently as they can and maybe casually
- 18:06Speaker 2: watch other NFL games, the lulls that you see from
- 18:08Speaker 2: the Eagles may be a little bit more than the
- 18:10Speaker 2: average team, but if you watch almost every NFL game,
- 18:13Speaker 2: you will see teams that just come out of the gates,
- 18:16Speaker 2: then they get figured out a little bit, then they
- 18:18Speaker 2: get it going. It's not uncommon for good teams, all teams,
- 18:23Speaker 2: to have the kind of lulls that we see the
- 18:25Speaker 2: Eagles may have more of them than normal. And I'm
- 18:26Speaker 2: not trying to diminish the fact that last year they
- 18:28Speaker 2: have more three and outs than in like the history
- 18:31Speaker 2: of mankind, which is not good, but you know, for,
- 18:35Speaker 2: for the, I know we've seen it already in the
- 18:36Speaker 2: first two games, like, Oh, what happened?
- 18:38Speaker 1: You come out, then you're in a little bit. Some
- 18:40Speaker 1: of that is just football.
- 18:41Speaker 2: So I know people want to beat and bury the
- 18:44Speaker 2: bad teams. I get it, but it's a road win
- 18:47Speaker 2: in a place they had never won before. And I
- 18:49Speaker 2: don't know how you can not be excited about the
- 18:51Speaker 2: way they went down.
- 18:52Speaker 3: It's a great win, man. It's on the road. You know, Eagles,
- 18:55Speaker 3: one of the best road teams in the National Football
- 18:56Speaker 3: League under Nick Sirianni. Hurts just shown tremendous heart. Having
- 19:03Speaker 3: that even keel, steely-eyed ability, it's just remarkable. He's just
- 19:08Speaker 3: really good at it. It's his fourth game-winning drive. 14th,
- 19:12Speaker 3: excuse me, 14th. Pretty impressive. But they've got a major
- 19:15Speaker 3: issue running the football. I'll say this much. They were
- 19:18Speaker 3: committed to doing it, controlling the clock. Getting some balance
- 19:22Speaker 3: is great. They definitely did. They did that. But defensively,
- 19:25Speaker 3: I saw some stuff that's a concern. There's no question.
- 19:28Speaker 2: So, yeah, let's get into it. You know, we'll get
- 19:32Speaker 2: more from Greg Cosell. A lot of people didn't like
- 19:36Speaker 2: the fact that he pointed out that Jalen Carter did
- 19:39Speaker 2: not have a big impact in week one.
- 19:40Speaker 1: But Greg made it clear.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yes, he blocked a– you're right.
- 19:44Speaker 1: It was all about on defense. I guess people forgot
- 19:46Speaker 1: about that.
- 19:47Speaker 2: But anyway, um this defense it almost feels like they're
- 19:50Speaker 2: going through it there's maybe there's obviously some great talent
- 19:55Speaker 2: and there's a little loose in areas that are surprising
- 20:00Speaker 2: you know giving up a long run like that to
- 20:02Speaker 2: um Tajay Spears on third and 22.
- 20:05Speaker 1: That is not this Eagles defense.
- 20:08Speaker 2: The way Cam Ward was really comfortable working play action
- 20:12Speaker 2: in the third quarter, especially when they went ahead, shows you,
- 20:15Speaker 2: as you had said last week, that they really do
- 20:17Speaker 2: miss that outside beast of an edge rusher. And we're
- 20:21Speaker 2: waiting for Hunt to really turn it up. And he
- 20:23Speaker 2: does show it's not like he's having a bad two games,
- 20:25Speaker 2: but they're really missing pressure in critical moments. And Cam
- 20:30Speaker 2: Ward being able to pick them apart there is the
- 20:32Speaker 2: biggest key. And then, I don't know, Iominoard hurdles a
- 20:36Speaker 2: guy and gets 41 yards.
- 20:39Speaker 1: That one's just going to happen.
- 20:40Speaker 2: But there's just something about this defense giving up big
- 20:43Speaker 2: plays in critical moments that we are not accustomed to seeing.
- 20:47Speaker 3: I mean, they're not giving up a lot of yards passing.
- 20:48Speaker 3: I mean, they're not. Right. But they're just not able
- 20:51Speaker 3: to shut these teams down.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:53Speaker 3: The run defense is interesting. Like, they got off to
- 20:55Speaker 3: a great start. In fact, it was so bad, they
- 20:58Speaker 3: put on Nick Singleton. They put in Singleton, their rookie
- 21:00Speaker 3: from Penn State.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Hey, hey, hey, hey.
- 21:01Speaker 1: He's a good player. Let's not say it's so bad.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Third stringer, though. He's the third back. They couldn't do anything.
- 21:07Speaker 3: And then second, you know, I'm sure it had something
- 21:09Speaker 3: to do with them wearing down. It was between 93
- 21:12Speaker 3: and 97 the entire game with very low humidity. But
- 21:15Speaker 3: off the field turf, it's well over 100. So obviously
- 21:17Speaker 3: had to rotate. And we'll see what the snap counts
- 21:19Speaker 3: look like on Monday. But they wore down. There's no
- 21:21Speaker 3: doubt the defense wore down.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Nobody loves grilling more than me. It could be 30
- 21:25Speaker 2: degrees and I'll be out there grilling burgers and steaks.
- 21:28Speaker 2: But the one thing that I really can't stand is
- 21:31Speaker 2: losing my fish and my veggies because they just can't
- 21:34Speaker 2: grill without falling through. That's why I've been using Hexclad's
- 21:38Speaker 2: BBQ Collection. It's bringing hybrid technology outdoors with products specifically

- 24:31Speaker 3: Funny, I got to. It's ELEC. IU Manor. How do
- 24:36Speaker 3: I know this? Before we went on there, I'm like,
- 24:38Speaker 3: we got to get this one right. I found a
- 24:40Speaker 3: video of his from Stanford. It's a day in the
- 24:43Speaker 3: life of him, and he said it immediately. Hey, it's
- 24:45Speaker 3: a day in the life of me, Alec IU Manor.
- 24:49Speaker 3: I was like, so it's a silent E. Okay. I
- 24:52Speaker 3: was calling him Alec.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Hey, what do you know?
- 24:54Speaker 3: I was calling him Elick.
- 24:57Speaker 2: It's a big, tall, wide receiver from Stanford who can
- 25:00Speaker 2: make contested catches.
- 25:02Speaker 1: How do you go find him?
- 25:04Speaker 4: Dude.
- 25:04Speaker 3: I had to. I had to. But look, defensively, here's
- 25:11Speaker 3: what they don't have, is they don't have a finisher.
- 25:13Speaker 3: They just don't. And that's where Gunnard comes in. Now,
- 25:16Speaker 3: whenever he plays, they projected within the first four games. Obviously,
- 25:21Speaker 3: coming back, you can't expect them to play a ton.
- 25:23Speaker 3: And we don't know what his condition will be like.
- 25:25Speaker 3: They need someone who can finish. He has to be
- 25:27Speaker 3: the finisher because they've got plenty of depth. That's not
- 25:29Speaker 3: the issue. They have enough players. They need someone who
- 25:31Speaker 3: can finish.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:33Speaker 3: And that's what Epinesa does. He's a run defender who
- 25:36Speaker 3: can get some pressure, but he's not a pressure player.
- 25:40Speaker 3: As a matter of fact, I know Vic hates the blitz,
- 25:42Speaker 3: and we'll see what the blitz numbers look like. We
- 25:45Speaker 3: know they're a stunt team. I wonder if he'll start
- 25:48Speaker 3: blitzing more, because they've got to get more pressure on
- 25:50Speaker 3: the quarterback.
- 25:51Speaker 2: So last year, for the first six or seven weeks,
- 25:55Speaker 2: I remember writing about this for Philly Voice.
- 25:57Speaker 1: His blitz percentage was up.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Toward, like, upper half of the NFL, not top three,
- 26:02Speaker 2: not top five. We're like 13, 14, 15 or something
- 26:05Speaker 2: like that. But we know for Vic Fangio, that's an
- 26:08Speaker 2: area that he doesn't typically like to be or want
- 26:10Speaker 2: to be. He felt like he had to be played
- 26:12Speaker 2: more mind coverage, did more blitz. And then as soon
- 26:15Speaker 2: as they got Jalen Carter, which coincided with the Kobe
- 26:18Speaker 2: Dean coming back, it was almost back to like very,
- 26:21Speaker 2: very scant blitzing. If anything, it was more sim pressure
- 26:24Speaker 2: with Dean coming as the fourth rusher and an edge
- 26:27Speaker 2: guy dropping.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I agree.
- 26:29Speaker 2: I think especially coming up here with, you know, Stafford
- 26:32Speaker 2: and we'll see who the Bears quarterback is going to be.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I saw Carol Williams got hurt and then Trevor Lawrence.
- 26:37Speaker 2: You know, I mean, better offensive, better, more creative offensive minds.
- 26:41Speaker 2: I do think Vic's going to have to figure out
- 26:43Speaker 2: a way to scheme out pressure unless they.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Can get Grenard back. But you know this, like we've
- 26:48Speaker 1: talked about it.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Even if Grenard plays next game, can he play 60%
- 26:53Speaker 2: of the game?
- 26:54Speaker 3: It's hard to believe. I would expect him to be
- 26:57Speaker 3: able to reduce snap count. you know, and see, they'll
- 27:00Speaker 3: know by practice what he looks like and what his
- 27:02Speaker 3: levels are, the fluids and ability to recover. But it's
- 27:06Speaker 3: a problem. They just, this is why they made the trade,
- 27:08Speaker 3: by the way, they wanted to finish her. And unfortunately
- 27:10Speaker 3: he got hurt lifting weights, but all is not lost
- 27:15Speaker 3: because they're not, it's not like they're giving up 300 yards.
- 27:17Speaker 3: They're not, they're not giving up a lot of yardage,
- 27:19Speaker 3: but they're giving up big play here and there. You're
- 27:22Speaker 3: not going to pitch a shit out. It's hard to do.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:25Speaker 3: And, You mentioned the play to IU Manor. That was
- 27:27Speaker 3: a big one. And Calvin Ridley wasn't even targeted week one.
- 27:30Speaker 3: A couple big catches. Right. A couple big catches.
- 27:34Speaker 1: I mean, four to five plays.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Ridley, IU Manor, Robinson got one good on a slant.
- 27:39Speaker 2: And then the big run by, well, Pollard had an 18-yarder.
- 27:44Speaker 2: And then the big run by Spear.
- 27:46Speaker 1: That's five plays. I don't want to say you take
- 27:47Speaker 1: away the five plays because they happened and they're important.
- 27:50Speaker 2: But other than that, I guess if you took the
- 27:52Speaker 2: average yards per play on every single other Titans play
- 27:56Speaker 2: is very low. So I don't know what you take
- 28:00Speaker 2: from that other than they kind of tighten it up. And,
- 28:02Speaker 2: you know, the whole point of the Fangio defense is
- 28:04Speaker 2: to limit explosives, especially over the top.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Now they didn't really get too many over the top,
- 28:09Speaker 1: but now.
- 28:09Speaker 3: You got to clean up underneath.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:11Speaker 3: In fact, Cardinal Tate was the best deep threat for
- 28:13Speaker 3: the draft. They couldn't get them deep. Now the thing is,
- 28:15Speaker 3: the reason why the secondary is giving up these plays
- 28:18Speaker 3: occasionally is because they can't get home and you can't
- 28:20Speaker 3: keep asking your defensive backs to keep holding the fort.
- 28:24Speaker 3: You got to get pressure. And you got to wrap up.
- 28:26Speaker 3: They're not wrapping up the quarterback. Hunt is not– like
- 28:30Speaker 3: Hunt's getting pressure, but he's not wrapping him up. Carter
- 28:32Speaker 3: had the huge sack. He just totally broke through. Totally.
- 28:36Speaker 3: He timed it up well, and he went right through.
- 28:39Speaker 3: But they've got to figure out a way to get
- 28:41Speaker 3: more pressure. That's the thing. And if it's Tyson Bajent
- 28:44Speaker 3: for the next Monday night in Chicago, could scramble a little,
- 28:48Speaker 3: but he's not– he's okay. They love him. What's that?
- 28:52Speaker 1: They like him. The Bears really like him.
- 28:54Speaker 3: He's been a great story. He's represented by Jake Presser
- 28:56Speaker 3: from my high school, Cheltenham.
- 28:58Speaker 1: That's right.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Just finishing this off. Also, special team special. Wow. Jake Elliott,
- 29:06Speaker 3: huge kick. He looks great. He's healthy, 59-yarder. And Braden
- 29:10Speaker 3: Mann is their co-MVP this season. He has been phenomenal.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 29:15Speaker 2: They've been good in coverage on on kickoffs and punts
- 29:18Speaker 2: that haven't had one break for i mean lane got
- 29:21Speaker 2: a like a 25 yard.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Or less but it wasn't really huge but um braden
- 29:25Speaker 3: man i'm told is one of the better holders believe
- 29:27Speaker 3: it or not i know it doesn't mean a lot
- 29:28Speaker 3: to people but if you want to go in football
- 29:30Speaker 3: it's a i'm told he's a phenomenal holder great that
- 29:33Speaker 3: matters i mean that stuff matters sure does as uh
- 29:37Speaker 3: as braden told us uh andrew to check on high
- 29:39Speaker 3: last year, when we were interviewing him on a local radio,
- 29:42Speaker 3: he started his football career off in high school as a,
- 29:44Speaker 3: as a linebacker. He was playing around as a, uh, uh,
- 29:49Speaker 3: soccer guy or, or kick the ball around. And someone
- 29:52Speaker 3: saw him said, Hey man, you should kick the rest
- 29:54Speaker 3: of his history.
- 29:55Speaker 1: You know how they say, like, we have a face
- 29:56Speaker 1: for radio. It's like, you got a tackling acumen for
- 29:59Speaker 1: a punder.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Why don't we move you over there?
- 30:01Speaker 3: Look, so there's actually a lot more good than Baylor 2-0.
- 30:04Speaker 3: I mean, that's obviously huge. We'll see what happens to
- 30:08Speaker 3: the Giants tonight. And then you've got Washington and Dallas
- 30:12Speaker 3: playing right now. That's it. So the Eagles are really
- 30:14Speaker 3: looking good in the division. The schedule is going to
- 30:16Speaker 3: get harder.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Yep.
- 30:18Speaker 3: We'll see. The good thing is they have a longer week.
- 30:19Speaker 3: We'll see what the injury situation looks like, but– I
