- 0:03Speaker 1: Good afternoon, everybody, and welcome to a brand new live
- 0:07Speaker 1: edition of Foul Territory. I'm pinch hitting for Scott bron.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Alana Rizzo, along with Aj Pierzinski and
- 0:13Speaker 1: Eric Kratz. Great to be with you, guys. We have
- 0:15Speaker 1: a big show today, so let's get to it. Gentlemen,
- 0:17Speaker 1: good to be with you. As always. Time to charge
- 0:20Speaker 1: the mount.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Let's charging about.
- 0:25Speaker 1: All right, lots to get to Let's start with the
- 0:27Speaker 1: fact that aj a Uhennio Suarez finally has a home.
- 0:32Speaker 1: It looks like he's going back to the Cincinnati Reds
- 0:34Speaker 1: on what looks to be a one year, fifteen million
- 0:37Speaker 1: dollar deal. Looks like he's going to primarily be the
- 0:39Speaker 1: DH will play some third a little bit, but one
- 0:42Speaker 1: of the hottest free agents in my opinion. Took a
- 0:44Speaker 1: long time to get him there. But he has a home. Now,
- 0:46Speaker 1: what do you make of it?
- 0:48Speaker 3: Only one year? No, there's no other teams that could
- 0:50Speaker 3: have taken j Hennio Suarez on for fifteen million for
- 0:53Speaker 3: one year. I mean, I know he was in he
- 0:55Speaker 3: was already in Cincinnati. It's a great place to hit,
- 0:58Speaker 3: but I'm just shocked at this. Was it like this
- 1:01Speaker 3: is where he ended up on a one year deal.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I mean, I look at a team and I'm gonna
- 1:05Speaker 3: say this, The Yankees, the Red Sox, they couldn't take
- 1:09Speaker 3: Gino Suarez on a one year, fifteen million dollar deal.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Even the Mariners couldn't take him back on a one year,
- 1:15Speaker 3: fifteen million dollar deal. There's some teams out there that
- 1:18Speaker 3: are close to competing that could have used this guy
- 1:20Speaker 3: for one year fift I mean, I look at the Braves.
- 1:22Speaker 3: If he's going to DH the Braves, I'd be a
- 1:24Speaker 3: good spot for him. And if Austin Riley matt Olsen
- 1:27Speaker 3: needs a day off, that's a good DH because they
- 1:29Speaker 3: don't have Azuna anymore. So I'm just shocked he ended
- 1:33Speaker 3: up in Cincinnati. Now, it's a ballpark factor, a familiarity thing.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I get that. But good for the Reds man, the
- 1:38Speaker 3: red should be stoked about this.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I mean, the Reds have got just gotten a lot
- 1:42Speaker 1: better Eric and he hit what forty nine bombs last year?
- 1:45Speaker 2: I believe that.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And Juhannio Suarez hit I mean, that's a guy I
- 1:49Speaker 1: thought was going to be scooped up a lot sooner
- 1:52Speaker 1: than he was. Why do you think it took so long?
- 1:54Speaker 1: And why do you think Cincinnati was ultimately the destination?
- 1:58Speaker 4: Oh no, I hope I can bring when we bring
- 2:00Speaker 4: Jim on that I can ask him what he said
- 2:03Speaker 4: last week. He said, I asked a GM big lead
- 2:07Speaker 4: GM earlier in the offseason. Well, why is nobody getting
- 2:12Speaker 4: any interest? Why is au Hineusuaz not getting any interest?
- 2:15Speaker 4: And he said, did you see what he got at
- 2:17Speaker 4: the trade deadline? You know, I'm like, what is that like?
- 2:22Speaker 4: Just because teams weren't on him at the trade deadline
- 2:25Speaker 4: all of a sudden, like he's not like he's just
- 2:27Speaker 4: completely viewed as somebody that's not valuable to a team.
- 2:31Speaker 4: I've never heard anything bad about his clubhouse presence. He
- 2:35Speaker 4: has not just fifty home run potential he had like
- 2:39Speaker 4: he can he will hit fifty home runs because he
- 2:42Speaker 4: has in his career.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Will he this year? I don't know.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Nobody knows that, Like you don't have a crystal ball.
- 2:47Speaker 4: But for fifteen million dollars, the Red got forty plus
- 2:50Speaker 4: home runs. In my opinion, they're gonna He's going to
- 2:52Speaker 4: hit forty plus home runs in a lineup that maybe
- 2:56Speaker 4: they all automatically get better because they have a dude
- 2:59Speaker 4: in the lineup that's not going to allow you to
- 3:01Speaker 4: get away with mistakes. And anybody that says, like for
- 3:06Speaker 4: fifteen million for fifteen that, like, how do you not
- 3:09Speaker 4: just add I don't care what the price is. He
- 3:12Speaker 4: had fifty two home runs including the postseason. Did he
- 3:15Speaker 4: slide down the stretch? Absolutely, he didn't do great. Did
- 3:19Speaker 4: he hit some one of the biggest Grand Slams? Maybe
- 3:22Speaker 4: the only Grand Slam I'm not sure in Mariner's postseason history? Yes,
- 3:27Speaker 4: like this, this is a guy that you can insert
- 3:29Speaker 4: in your lineup immediately, no matter where it is, and.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Especially at Great American I can certainly see him hitting
- 3:39Speaker 1: over fifty bombs. I mean that's a heck of a
- 3:41Speaker 1: hitter's park, as you guys know better than anybody. And
- 3:44Speaker 1: again it's just fifteen million on a I mean, fifteen
- 3:46Speaker 1: million dollars to us is a lot of money. But
- 3:49Speaker 1: for what he's going to give in terms of an
- 3:51Speaker 1: impact in that lineup, you can't tell me that the
- 3:55Speaker 1: Red Sox can't spend fifteen million dollars, especially if he's
- 3:58Speaker 1: going to primarily be a DH Masa Taka Yoshida was
- 4:01Speaker 1: the Red Sox DH last year. Not anything against Yoshida,
- 4:05Speaker 1: but that is not who I want as a DH to.
- 4:07Speaker 1: If I'm the Red Sox, how does he not go
- 4:10Speaker 1: to a bigger market team.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Aj I just asked that question, Lona, I don't understand
- 4:16Speaker 3: this one. And also, here's my other thing. I've had
- 4:18Speaker 3: many GMS. It was Jim Bowden this. There is no
- 4:21Speaker 3: such thing as a bad one year deal for anybody,
- 4:24Speaker 3: no matter how much. If it's one year, one hundred million,
- 4:26Speaker 3: it's not a bad idea and a one year deal
- 4:27Speaker 3: because you can always cut ties and move on if
- 4:30Speaker 3: you're an organization. So listen. To say that he's a
- 4:36Speaker 3: bad clubhouse guy doesn't work. To say that he's a
- 4:38Speaker 3: bad defender. Okay, he's not Cabrian Hayes, but he's good enough.
- 4:42Speaker 3: He's serviceable. He's not he strikes out too much. Okay,
- 4:45Speaker 3: everyone strikes out too much. He also runs into forty eight.
- 4:49Speaker 3: He runs into forty homers every year. Every time you
- 4:51Speaker 3: see him, he's got a smile on his face. He
- 4:54Speaker 3: can play in pressure. He proved that he can play
- 4:56Speaker 3: under pressure. I just listen. Congratulations, Cincinnati redfans. This is
- 5:03Speaker 3: one of those moves that you should be super proud
- 5:04Speaker 3: about the other teams. I don't know.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Apparently the Red Spots never even made an offer to Sware.
- 5:12Speaker 1: As you guys at the beginning of the off season,
- 5:14Speaker 1: it seemed like a decent backup plan for them, of course,
- 5:16Speaker 1: if they didn't land Alex Spragman, which they didn't because
- 5:19Speaker 1: he went to the Cubs. And you can't tell me
- 5:21Speaker 1: that they don't have the money. They got rid of
- 5:23Speaker 1: two hundred plus million dollars when they for whatever reason
- 5:27Speaker 1: decided to let Rafael Devers go to the San Francisco
- 5:30Speaker 1: Giants in the second year of what was a ten
- 5:33Speaker 1: year deal, So they have the money. They didn't know
- 5:37Speaker 1: if Bregman was going to come back. They didn't even
- 5:39Speaker 1: make him an offer. And Jason Mackie, he does a
- 5:41Speaker 1: great job covering the Pittsburgh Pirates, was told that the
- 5:44Speaker 1: Bucos offered the same aav on au Heennio Suarez. They
- 5:48Speaker 1: were willing to go higher as well as at another year.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Sounds like his choice came down to a better ballpark fit,
- 5:54Speaker 1: as aj said, familiarity as he said as well, and
- 5:57Speaker 1: a chance to cash in next year with the big season.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I mean, that's the thing now, right some of these
- 6:02Speaker 1: guys if they wait forever or they have to wait
- 6:04Speaker 1: forever to sign, Let's just do a one year deal
- 6:07Speaker 1: and then re enter the free agency market again. Eric
- 6:10Speaker 1: after the deal, Yeah, I.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Mean and owner owner's teams. They love this good Go
- 6:17Speaker 4: go get your money from somebody else. We'll take you
- 6:19Speaker 4: for one year.
- 6:20Speaker 2: We love.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Teams love the one year deal. Teams love it. And
- 6:25Speaker 4: for the Pirates, I'm sad. I'm sad that they did
- 6:27Speaker 4: not get this done. I'm sad that there is a
- 6:31Speaker 4: collusion in the league that a player that has forty
- 6:35Speaker 4: nine home runs gets the exact same offer from multiple teams.
- 6:40Speaker 4: I'm sad for the fact that they don't see what
- 6:44Speaker 4: a great clubhouse guy and how hard it is to
- 6:48Speaker 4: hit forty nine home runs and what kind of value
- 6:51Speaker 4: that brings to a team who has playoff aspirations. Beginning
- 6:54Speaker 4: off season, I did not believe the Pirates had playoff aspirations.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I do now.
- 6:59Speaker 4: I think they really do, and I would be I
- 7:03Speaker 4: have a hard time believing they're gonna find thirty home
- 7:06Speaker 4: runs at third base to replace Ahenio Suarez. And maybe
- 7:11Speaker 4: he doesn't have a great year. Maybe Pirate fans will say, see,
- 7:14Speaker 4: we shouldn't assigned him. I'm just sad that that teams
- 7:18Speaker 4: won't put this extra money in to take that extra mile,
- 7:21Speaker 4: because I know as a player, you put everything you
- 7:24Speaker 4: have into this season, and I can see it in
- 7:26Speaker 4: Paul's schemes. You see it in is the way he interacts,
- 7:29Speaker 4: the way he's like, we just have to be better.
- 7:31Speaker 2: He's he's all about winning.
- 7:32Speaker 4: The different guys that they already got in there, Anio
- 7:35Speaker 4: would be incredible to add to that lineup because this
- 7:39Speaker 4: is the list of guys that last year in Major
- 7:42Speaker 4: League Baseball hit more home runs than him, Aaron Judge,
- 7:45Speaker 4: Shoe Otani, Kyle Schwarber, and obviously cal Rally.
- 7:51Speaker 1: That's insane. So that begs the question.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Why did.
- 7:57Speaker 3: That's we don't know. But here's here's my thing. If
- 7:59Speaker 3: we're talking fucking pirates, Okay, we've had this conversation. Pittsburgh
- 8:03Speaker 3: Pirates do not have a great reputation as far as
- 8:06Speaker 3: a winning b signing guys, keeping on whatever you want.
- 8:10Speaker 3: The reputation amongst players and fans and I think people
- 8:15Speaker 3: in general is that the Pirates aren't really as much
- 8:17Speaker 3: as we want them to try. Yes, even though they
- 8:20Speaker 3: got Ryan O'Hearn and they went out and made some
- 8:22Speaker 3: moves that we all like, we really don't believe it.
- 8:26Speaker 3: So we've had this conversation. If they're really interested in
- 8:29Speaker 3: Gino Suarez, right, like, you have to go above and beyond.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Now they said they go above the one year fifteen?
- 8:37Speaker 3: Is that one year sixteen? They're like, hey, you know what,
- 8:39Speaker 3: Geno will give you one year sixteen to come to Pittsburgh,
- 8:42Speaker 3: right like you have to Like they're like, oh, a
- 8:44Speaker 3: two year deal, but it was probably with an opt
- 8:46Speaker 3: out and it was probably like a two thirty or
- 8:49Speaker 3: something like that. Right, So he was looking at it like, well,
- 8:51Speaker 3: I can get one fifteen from a place I know
- 8:54Speaker 3: I can go and hit forty again. I've been there before,
- 8:57Speaker 3: I played there before. They made the playoffs last year.
- 9:00Speaker 3: People forget the Reds were in the postseason. Now they
- 9:02Speaker 3: got stomped by the Dodgers in two games, but they
- 9:04Speaker 3: were in the postseason last year. Okay, so everyone's looking
- 9:07Speaker 3: at the Cincinnati Reds as hey, this team is only
- 9:09Speaker 3: going up. You had Suarez to the mix. They've made
- 9:12Speaker 3: some other smaller moves that they think are gonna help
- 9:15Speaker 3: another year of Ellie at shore and another year of
- 9:18Speaker 3: all these other guys in the field, and another year
- 9:20Speaker 3: of the pitchers. I don't know if it's gonna work out,
- 9:23Speaker 3: But if you're the Pirates, I'm just if I'm a
- 9:25Speaker 3: Pirates fan, at some point you just know you have
- 9:27Speaker 3: to go above and beyond. And right now they're trying
- 9:30Speaker 3: to get away with it by just saying we tried,
- 9:32Speaker 3: we tried, we tried. Yes, Rhyan O'Hearn, nice edition, Brandon
- 9:35Speaker 3: Lutrade great. Some of the things they've done have been good.
- 9:38Speaker 3: But if you want to get a guy like Gino
- 9:40Speaker 3: Suarez who wants to win and he wants to get paid,
- 9:43Speaker 3: you got to go above and beyond. And that's the
- 9:45Speaker 3: Pirates just aren't doing that. That's why the Kyle Schwarbert
- 9:48Speaker 3: thing when they're like, oh, the Pirates were in. They
- 9:50Speaker 3: were in for less than he got in Philly. So
- 9:52Speaker 3: cool they were in, but they were never real players.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah, they needed to go harder on Suarez and they
- 9:58Speaker 1: definitely need to resign up. Mccutch.
- 10:01Speaker 3: What here's the thing, Alana. If they go and I'll
- 10:03Speaker 3: ask crutches, if they go to Gino Suarez and say,
- 10:06Speaker 3: you know what, we'll give you two forty think he's
- 10:09Speaker 3: turning it down. No, absolutely, But if they go, hey
- 10:13Speaker 3: here's two, here's two twenty eight or two thirty whatever,
- 10:17Speaker 3: he's like, well, I'll take my one year in Cincinnati,
- 10:19Speaker 3: a place I know and have been there, and then
- 10:21Speaker 3: I'll go back on the free agent market. I'll probably
- 10:23Speaker 3: get fifteen or more next year and i can pick
- 10:26Speaker 3: where I want to go and I'm not stuck in
- 10:27Speaker 3: a place I don't know that And are they serious?
- 10:29Speaker 3: So you got to go above and beyond and you
- 10:31Speaker 3: got to blow everybody out side of the water.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Look at those projected lineup for the reds Now with
- 10:36Speaker 1: Suarez in't it? You guys some good protection. It's a
- 10:38Speaker 1: decent lineup. I mean TJ. Friedel, obviously, Marte Ellie de
- 10:42Speaker 1: la Cruz. We know how much of an impact player
- 10:44Speaker 1: he is, how much fun he is to watch Suarez
- 10:46Speaker 1: as the DH in the cleanup spot. I mean, that's
- 10:48Speaker 1: where you would expect him to be, right, I mean
- 10:50Speaker 1: a knock on his defense, I guess, But that's exactly
- 10:52Speaker 1: where you want him if you're going to sign him.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Stuart Tyler, Stevenson, JJ Blede, Matt McClain, who I love
- 10:58Speaker 1: and Cabrian Haynes. That's a decent starting lineup for this
- 11:01Speaker 1: I mean the projected lineup for the Cincinnati Reds.
- 11:06Speaker 4: I mean potential, the Cincinnati potentials, massive potential. There, massive
- 11:12Speaker 4: potential up and down through that lineup. But the reason
- 11:14Speaker 4: I laugh when you were reading that lineup is because
- 11:19Speaker 4: a team just added on January what was that, January
- 11:24Speaker 4: thirty first or February first, they added a cleanup hitter,
- 11:29Speaker 4: a cleanup hitter of their lineup.
- 11:31Speaker 2: He's going to hit clean up for a lot of teams.
- 11:33Speaker 2: They added him for one year fifteen million crap, Like,
- 11:38Speaker 2: that's not good for players, that's not good for player salary.
- 11:41Speaker 2: That's not good for.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Teams that need a right handed bat in a right
- 11:46Speaker 4: handed friendly park that they did not pick him up
- 11:50Speaker 4: if they have desire of winning and dominating the league
- 11:55Speaker 4: that they're in.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Who's to say, now, a great American I mean, I
- 11:58Speaker 1: know half of the games are on the road. Can
- 12:00Speaker 1: appreciate that. But a great American he might hit sixty bombs.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I mean totally in the year.
- 12:05Speaker 2: It's a pictures park. Now it's a pictures park.
- 12:08Speaker 4: Now the numbers will show the numbers will show it
- 12:11Speaker 4: like what they haven't moved the fences.
- 12:13Speaker 3: In it is.
- 12:15Speaker 1: I didn't know that. I thought Great American was a
- 12:17Speaker 1: Great American small park.
- 12:19Speaker 3: How is it.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Okay last year? M okay, Yeah, that's what he said.
- 12:25Speaker 3: That's what he said. That's what he said.
- 12:29Speaker 1: That's what he said. All right, we're going to continue
- 12:33Speaker 1: the conversation. Thanks for Sean for coming on. It's interesting,
- 12:38Speaker 1: you know, I can I can understand it from both perspectives. Guys,
- 12:41Speaker 1: if you look at what he was talking about. I mean,
- 12:44Speaker 1: but why do you think that, like Team Puerto Rico
- 12:47Speaker 1: said they might withdraw the team from the tournament after
- 12:50Speaker 1: learning eight to ten of their players would be denied. Now,
- 12:53Speaker 1: AJ you said, there's no way in the world that
- 12:55Speaker 1: they do this, especially since they are the host, one
- 12:59Speaker 1: of the hosts the four And that would make a
- 13:03Speaker 1: statement though, would it not?
- 13:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it would. But they'll figure it out. Just they'll
- 13:09Speaker 3: figure it out, like all this public interest now, they'll
- 13:12Speaker 3: find a way to figure this pert Rico's Can you
- 13:14Speaker 3: imagine that Puerto Ricos went to Major League Baseball and said,
- 13:18Speaker 3: we're gonna pull out of this tournament right now, two
- 13:21Speaker 3: weeks before it's about to start. Whatever three weeks before
- 13:23Speaker 3: it's start month whatever it is, and they're like, we're
- 13:26Speaker 3: gonna you gotta find a new host major League Baseball
- 13:28Speaker 3: and say not only you're never gonna host again, we
- 13:30Speaker 3: don't know they will invite you back again. It would
- 13:32Speaker 3: be it would be not be a good look for
- 13:33Speaker 3: Puerto Rico. I'm sorry. I get what they're saying, and
- 13:36Speaker 3: I understand why they're upset. And I want Francisco Lindoor
- 13:39Speaker 3: and I want all these Puerto Rican guys Carlos Korea
- 13:41Speaker 3: that want to play to be able to play. But
- 13:43Speaker 3: they're not gonna do this because they know over the
- 13:45Speaker 3: long haul, this is not a good thing for them
- 13:47Speaker 3: to do. And I think it's just it's just posturing.
- 13:50Speaker 3: And I think that this is a way for them
- 13:52Speaker 3: to threaten this and then they'll figure out a way
- 13:53Speaker 3: to get this done.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I mean, they're running out of time.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Eka they are running out of time, and this is
- 14:00Speaker 4: why it's all coming to a head right now. But insurance,
- 14:04Speaker 4: as anybody who pays for insurance, life insurance, well life insurance,
- 14:07Speaker 4: I guess doesn't change. But homeowners, auto rental, all that
- 14:11Speaker 4: stuff has gone up in the last three years, has
- 14:14Speaker 4: gone up exponentially, I think by like seventy five percent
- 14:18Speaker 4: in some industries. So maybe there's a standard that the WBCI,
- 14:23Speaker 4: which is Major League Baseball and the Players Association, has
- 14:27Speaker 4: to change their standard because clearly there's some type of
- 14:30Speaker 4: line that says, Okay, if this is the price, we're
- 14:34Speaker 4: not paying for these guys to play because Great Britain,
- 14:37Speaker 4: their federation can't afford to pay Eradus Chapman's insurance no
- 14:43Speaker 4: matter what that insurance is. They don't have the cash
- 14:46Speaker 4: that like a team USA federation has, but those aren't
- 14:50Speaker 4: The federations aren't paying for it right now. It's Major
- 14:52Speaker 4: League Baseball and the Players Association because it's forty man
- 14:56Speaker 4: roster guys, because it's a owned tournament by the WBC.
- 15:01Speaker 4: I is what I was just told. And so maybe
- 15:05Speaker 4: they need to change there. Maybe they need to change
- 15:08Speaker 4: their percentage of what they're gonna pay because insurance costs
- 15:11Speaker 4: go up.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Just look at your bill wherever you go.
- 15:13Speaker 1: There's not a major league team of the thirty that
- 15:16Speaker 1: has guys on forty man rosters that can't pay for
- 15:19Speaker 1: the insurance for their players. There's not a major league
- 15:23Speaker 1: that can't pay you're trying to tell me. And I
- 15:25Speaker 1: know Miguel Rojas's situation was different because his was an
- 15:27Speaker 1: age thing versus an insurance thing. But let's just say
- 15:30Speaker 1: it was an insurance thing. You're telling me that the
- 15:32Speaker 1: daughters can't pay Miguel Rojas's insurance or Otani's insurance or
- 15:37Speaker 1: Yamamoto's insurance or you know, like we just.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Talked about this, We just talked about this.
- 15:42Speaker 4: You can't tell me there's nine tena couldn't pay and
- 15:44Speaker 4: Heneo Suarez fifteen million dollars to play, Like.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Right, there's there's a different want to versus can there
- 15:51Speaker 1: you go, and I think they've set their line and
- 15:53Speaker 1: I think they've set.
- 15:54Speaker 4: And unfortunately teen Puerto Rico is a team that's just no, no, no,
- 15:59Speaker 4: no no, And there's clearly ways around it, and I'm
- 16:04Speaker 4: hoping that they use some common sense or else.
- 16:08Speaker 2: I think it could really hurt this. It could really
- 16:11Speaker 2: hurt it.
- 16:11Speaker 4: If you don't have the stars playing in your tournament, exhibition,
- 16:15Speaker 4: global championship, whatever you want to call it, it is
- 16:19Speaker 4: not good for your exhibition tournament, whatever it is.
- 16:24Speaker 1: To Eric's point, the coverage has become considerably more expensive.
- 16:29Speaker 1: The league's insurers has become more stringent about which players
- 16:33Speaker 1: it approves. So that's another thing too. Where is that line,
- 16:36Speaker 1: which player are you going to approve? And where is
- 16:39Speaker 1: the fairness in that? People briefed on the underwriting process
- 16:42Speaker 1: who are not authorized to speak publicly said, no cap
- 16:45Speaker 1: exists for how much salary can be covered in total
- 16:49Speaker 1: across Major League Baseball.
- 16:52Speaker 2: But that's not so.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Again, this is different rules for different.
- 16:55Speaker 4: Players, no different rules for different situations. But they still
- 17:03Speaker 4: have a cap of where they want to go. And
- 17:05Speaker 4: if they didn't revisit it. I don't know that they
- 17:07Speaker 4: didn't revisit it, but if they didn't revisit that cap
- 17:11Speaker 4: for the from the insure, I mean, Aja, you live
- 17:15Speaker 4: in Florida, I'm sure your insurance goes up if you
- 17:17Speaker 4: lived on the coast. There's places that aren't even insuring
- 17:20Speaker 4: places fully and this is for houses, but it's insurance
- 17:24Speaker 4: is essentially across the board the same thing.
- 17:26Speaker 2: It just goes up. Premiums go up.
- 17:29Speaker 4: And if you don't change, if you don't change it,
- 17:31Speaker 4: look at what the Look what happened to the Trup
- 17:34Speaker 4: the trop They dropped their insurance the year that the
- 17:36Speaker 4: roof blew off because it went up by a certain
- 17:39Speaker 4: percentage and they were willing to take the risk. They're
- 17:41Speaker 4: just they're not able to take that risk right now.
- 17:44Speaker 4: It's kind of like insurance they to talk about. Also,
- 17:50Speaker 4: I just want to say this, This insurance isn't just
- 17:53Speaker 4: a WBC thing. It's also in baseball thing because it
- 17:58Speaker 4: can dictate guys that are signing guys aren't signed older guys.
- 18:01Speaker 4: They have a hard time getting insurance on older guys contracts.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Maybe that they didn't they couldn't sign them to a
- 18:07Speaker 4: longer term deal because they couldn't get them insured. I mean,
- 18:10Speaker 4: this insurance thing is, Yes, the spotlight's on it for WBC,
- 18:12Speaker 4: we don't have enough time to get into it, but
- 18:14Speaker 4: it also affects more than just the WBC, in Major
- 18:17Speaker 4: League Baseball and all sports.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Really yeah, I just I don't I don't know. I
- 18:23Speaker 1: think that if a guy wants to play for his country,
- 18:27Speaker 1: you let him play, and you find a way. If
- 18:30Speaker 1: you want to grow the game that every owner says
- 18:32Speaker 1: they want to do, whether it's you know, a service
- 18:35Speaker 1: or not, if you want to grow the game, this
- 18:37Speaker 1: is a great way to do it.
- 18:38Speaker 4: They don't want they don't want to They don't truly
- 18:41Speaker 4: want to grow the game. They want their their agenda,
- 18:44Speaker 4: their bottom line, and because there's a lot of people
- 18:47Speaker 4: that they have to answer to. And I think it
- 18:49Speaker 4: sucks because of the fact that it's glaring towards like
- 18:53Speaker 4: Mickey ros said, Puerto Rican and Venezuelan players. It sucks
- 18:58Speaker 4: and I think there should be some transparent see there.
- 19:00Speaker 4: I think I think Sprawling said, I think Sean said that.
- 19:04Speaker 4: I think they need to have transparency and say this
- 19:07Speaker 4: is why we have some we have some ideas, but
- 19:12Speaker 4: we need a little bit more.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Why would they just they can insure themselves. Why woult
- 19:16Speaker 3: they just insure themselves. You can go to Lloyd's of
- 19:19Speaker 3: London and get insurance on your own contract. They can
- 19:21Speaker 3: play yeah, you're right, or.
- 19:26Speaker 4: It's a Major League Baseball pay for the part that
- 19:29Speaker 4: they would pay for and the rest pay and the
- 19:31Speaker 4: players pay for that are denied the extra. You know,
- 19:35Speaker 4: whatever that extra is. Hey, we're willing to pay. Who
- 19:38Speaker 4: knows what it is. It's a month. You're getting insurance
- 19:40Speaker 4: for not even a month, for two weeks based on
- 19:43Speaker 4: your future Sally, it's not like they're insuring like it
- 19:47Speaker 4: doesn't work like that if you max Max Scherzer had
- 19:51Speaker 4: to pay when he was with the Tigers and he
- 19:53Speaker 4: turned down that massive deal, and then he ended up
- 19:55Speaker 4: signing a massive deal with the Nats. He bought his
- 19:59Speaker 4: own insurance. That insurance plan was for an entire season,
- 20:03Speaker 4: just like these college football guys who are buying insurance
- 20:06Speaker 4: for the the you know, their last bowl game, because
- 20:11Speaker 4: if they get hurt in that ball game, they could
- 20:13Speaker 4: slip to the third round. Because you know, it's different
- 20:15Speaker 4: if you're playing one game or five games or one hundred.
- 20:19Speaker 2: And sixty two games.
- 20:20Speaker 3: No, but you have still have to cover the whole
- 20:22Speaker 3: season though. That's the difference.
- 20:24Speaker 2: I get it.
- 20:25Speaker 3: So that's what you're saying. What you're saying is not right.
- 20:27Speaker 3: You still have to pay an insurance policy because you're
- 20:30Speaker 3: covering that season in that contract. So you're not paying
- 20:32Speaker 3: just for covering me for these two weeks. You have
- 20:35Speaker 3: to pay premiums that say, hey, I'm covering whatever my
- 20:38Speaker 3: contract is, not just on these two weeks. Like, yes,
- 20:42Speaker 3: you're only playing for two weeks, but god forbid you
- 20:44Speaker 3: get hurt in those two weeks, you got to pay
- 20:46Speaker 3: enough money to cover that entire contract if possible, but.
- 20:50Speaker 1: The insurance too, is like, if the guy gets hurt,
- 20:52Speaker 1: they're on the hook for a couple of years of
- 20:56Speaker 1: the player's contract. It's not just the time that they're
- 20:59Speaker 1: are it's two. Somebody in our chat said that they
- 21:01Speaker 1: should try Geico because they like that little Gecko. Just
- 21:05Speaker 1: some levity for the situation. Guys just here to just
- 21:07Speaker 1: make you laugh. I mean, that's just what I'm here for.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Let's let's turn the topic to show Hey Otani in
- 21:12Speaker 1: the WBC. This is not an insurance issue. This is
- 21:16Speaker 1: hey Otani is participating for Team Japan. But he did
- 21:18Speaker 1: say that he will not pitch in the WBC and
- 21:23Speaker 1: he will get ready for the regular season to pitch
- 21:26Speaker 1: for the Dodgers. This was from Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Otani will not pitch in
- 21:32Speaker 1: the WBC, adding that it was Otani's decision. A jed,
- 21:37Speaker 1: do you think it was Otani's decision, which I believe
- 21:39Speaker 1: it was, because I believe that the Dodgers do whatever
- 21:41Speaker 1: Otani says? And do you like this? Do you like
- 21:44Speaker 1: this choice?
- 21:46Speaker 2: Uh?
- 21:47Speaker 3: No, I hate the choice because I love the WBC,
- 21:49Speaker 3: But I understand it. Of course, I want to see
- 21:51Speaker 3: Otani versus Trout at the end again like we saw
- 21:53Speaker 3: a couple of years ago. But I understand it, and listen,
- 21:57Speaker 3: was it his choice, Here's what it was. Here's one
- 21:59Speaker 3: thing we know about Shohan Tani. He makes informed decisions
- 22:02Speaker 3: for the longevity of his career. And the worst thing
- 22:05Speaker 3: that he could have happen right now, for not only him,
- 22:07Speaker 3: but for the Dodgers is him going out and getting
- 22:09Speaker 3: hurt pitching again. The odds of a position player going
- 22:12Speaker 3: out and getting hurt and missing an entire season, yes
- 22:15Speaker 3: they are there, but they're much slimmer than a pitcher.
- 22:17Speaker 3: So I totally get this, and I totally understand it.
- 22:21Speaker 3: It just sucks because I want to see him pitch
- 22:23Speaker 3: and I want that moment again. The excuse me, the
- 22:25Speaker 3: Otani Trout, the Tani Judge, bottom of the ninth, He's
- 22:29Speaker 3: pitching and boom, we'll see what happens. You know, Otani
- 22:32Speaker 3: versus I don't know whoever, Will Smith, whoever you want
- 22:35Speaker 3: to throw out there, like his teammate or you know
- 22:38Speaker 3: someone you know again, Aaron Judge. That'd be really cool
- 22:41Speaker 3: to see. But it's the smart decision.
- 22:44Speaker 1: I didn't get to talk to you after you took
- 22:47Speaker 1: a picture with Otani. Were you nervous?
- 22:49Speaker 3: Ah, of course, I was scared to death to ask him,
- 22:52Speaker 3: because all I heard was he won't do it, He
- 22:53Speaker 3: won't do it, he won't do it. He was great,
- 22:56Speaker 3: he was nice, he laughed. Luckily I knew his training
- 22:58Speaker 3: his translator though, so that helped me kind of with
- 23:00Speaker 3: the insights.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Oh, you know, the thrill.
- 23:03Speaker 3: I know Matt. I know Matt, his personal guy. Oh,
- 23:05Speaker 3: pardon me, because because he has two, he has two
- 23:09Speaker 3: different ones now. He used to just have the one.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Now he has Matt at home and he has the
- 23:12Speaker 3: Dodgers one. And Matt used to work. Matt used to
- 23:14Speaker 3: work for Fukudome when played with me, and he's great.
- 23:18Speaker 3: So both those Fukadomi and Matt. So when I saw him,
- 23:21Speaker 3: Matt's like, oh, and he introduced me and gave a
- 23:23Speaker 3: little funny story. I don't know what he said because
- 23:25Speaker 3: I don't speak Japanese, but he laughed, so I'm sure
- 23:27Speaker 3: it was something very in It's.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Probably and inappropriate. But nevertheless, you got a picture with show.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Hey Otani. I'm jealous, Eric, he's not pitching. I'm imagining.
- 23:40Speaker 1: You can understand the reasoning behind that as well.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Ye we just said Jim Bowden on talking about how
- 23:46Speaker 4: we need to have a little hangnail or you're gonna
- 23:48Speaker 4: have a little soreness. Guys are gonna sit out. Not
- 23:52Speaker 4: because the Dodgers don't care. It's because the Dodgers have
- 23:55Speaker 4: one thing from top to bottom, from a ball all
- 23:59Speaker 4: the way up to the Guggenheims. They are locked in
- 24:04Speaker 4: on winning the World Series. And you know what, Shoho
- 24:07Speaker 4: Tani not pitching for his country was massive intrigue. I
- 24:10Speaker 4: forget how many like double or tripled his Instagram followers
- 24:14Speaker 4: last year in I mean last WBC when he was
- 24:18Speaker 4: in it, like the only bigger star was Lars Newbar.
- 24:21Speaker 4: I'm kidding, but this is what we go to see.
- 24:25Speaker 4: We see the best players play. So yeah, I'm sad
- 24:28Speaker 4: that he's not gonna pitch. Am I surprised? Absolutely not.
- 24:31Speaker 4: He's still gonna play. He's still one of the top
- 24:35Speaker 4: three best hitters on the planet. We just don't get
- 24:37Speaker 4: to see one of the you know, top ten pitchers
- 24:40Speaker 4: on the planet. So oh well, boohoo us. But we
- 24:44Speaker 4: saw it last time. Enjoy it, remember it. Go rewind
- 24:48Speaker 4: and let the Dodgers go and try to win their
- 24:50Speaker 4: World Series without what.
- 24:52Speaker 1: If we see like a Paul Skins versus sho he
- 24:55Speaker 1: Otani at that.
- 24:57Speaker 3: I mean, you can see that in the regular season.
- 25:00Speaker 2: No Rogers versus Pirates.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I want Here's what I want to Elana. We
- 25:04Speaker 3: want the drama that happened in the last one. First,
- 25:06Speaker 3: try to facet Tawani teammates bottom of the ninth think listen,
- 25:11Speaker 3: can we say show hey face Aaron Judge in the
- 25:13Speaker 3: regular season of the postseason? Absolutely, but with the game
- 25:16Speaker 3: on the line, country verse country, as much as this
- 25:18Speaker 3: means more than the World Series, Eric and Scott and
- 25:22Speaker 3: Sean right, we want to see that. We want that drama.
- 25:25Speaker 3: We're here. That's why people like this, because this is
- 25:29Speaker 3: why the Olympics needs Major League Baseball players and MPB
- 25:32Speaker 3: and the best players in the world playing in it.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Just like the NHL does. Shut the season down for
- 25:37Speaker 3: a couple weeks. Let these guys go play, showcase the
- 25:40Speaker 3: game to the world everybody, because it's an unbelievably great
- 25:43Speaker 3: game if you just show it to people.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Amen, I want to see.
- 25:48Speaker 4: I want to see Edwin Diz versus Will Smith or
- 25:53Speaker 4: or let's see Paul Skeens versus I'm trying to think today,
- 26:00Speaker 4: anybody on an international team, that's what I want to see.
- 26:03Speaker 4: I want to see. I want to see Shoe Hay
- 26:06Speaker 4: versus Scooble. I want to see that left handed Matt Like.
- 26:10Speaker 4: That's that's what we're here for. And that's what is
- 26:13Speaker 4: so cool about your country playing or players, your stars,
- 26:17Speaker 4: your team star playing for your country. Because there is
- 26:21Speaker 4: plenty of Minnesota Twins White Sox fans who can be
- 26:25Speaker 4: a fan of Team USA and cheer for Trek Schouble
- 26:28Speaker 4: and they will never cheer for Terrek Scoobel again until
- 26:32Speaker 4: he goes to another team. I mean, he's not gonna
- 26:34Speaker 4: go to the White Sox so because he's a Tigers player.
- 26:36Speaker 4: But that's what international baseball does. And I am probably
- 26:40Speaker 4: not as big of a baseball nerd for international baseball
- 26:43Speaker 4: as JP Morosi or Sean Sean Spradling, but I love
- 26:48Speaker 4: international baseball, from Winter League to the WBC, to all
- 26:52Speaker 4: the minor league players that play and the stuff.
- 26:54Speaker 2: It's awesome.
- 26:55Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about some money moves, guys. Luis
- 26:58Speaker 1: a rise to the Giants. They reached an agreement with
- 27:00Speaker 1: the twenty eight year old contact hitting savant. Of course,
- 27:03Speaker 1: he has won the batting title three different times. It's
- 27:06Speaker 1: a one year, twelve million dollar contract. He led the
- 27:10Speaker 1: National League last year with one hundred and eighty one
- 27:12Speaker 1: hits last season. Aja, you like this for the Giants?
- 27:15Speaker 1: You like this for a Rise?
- 27:17Speaker 3: No, I like it for a Rise. The Giants needed
- 27:19Speaker 3: a second baseman. The Rise has given his opinion that
- 27:22Speaker 3: he wants to play second base. It's a good fit.
- 27:24Speaker 3: He can get on base for like Jim Boden said,
- 27:26Speaker 3: for a Damis and for Raffie Devers to drive him in.
- 27:30Speaker 3: I like this move. I think it's a good move.
- 27:31Speaker 3: It's a good one year move. It's a proven year.
- 27:34Speaker 3: And if Damas goes out and I know it doesn't
- 27:36Speaker 3: mean anything, but he goes I mean sorry, if a
- 27:38Speaker 3: Rise goes out and doesn't mean anything, but he goes
- 27:40Speaker 3: out and wins another batting title in San Francisco, he
- 27:43Speaker 3: should be in line to get a nice contract. Because
- 27:45Speaker 3: I just love how I'm gonna say this in a
- 27:48Speaker 3: Rise of a former Minnesota Twin. Batting titles meant so
- 27:51Speaker 3: much for Joe Maller, and they meant a lot for
- 27:53Speaker 3: Buster Posey, right, but Luisa Rise wins one and nobody cares.
- 27:56Speaker 3: So it's just because they were catchers. Or is it
- 27:59Speaker 3: because the thought on batting titles has changed so much?
- 28:03Speaker 3: I'm just asking.
- 28:05Speaker 1: It always seems like this year is a proven year
- 28:08Speaker 1: for Luisa Raise.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Eric.
- 28:09Speaker 1: I mean, the guy does have three batting titles. I
- 28:11Speaker 1: understand that he's not you know, he's not a power hitter.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Of course, he doesn't hit home runs. He's not the
- 28:15Speaker 1: best defensively. But I would think that being able to
- 28:18Speaker 1: make contact and not striking out would be of value apparently,
- 28:24Speaker 1: though not in today's game, correct, Man.
- 28:28Speaker 2: I just don't. It's not like we're talking about like don't.
- 28:32Speaker 4: I don't know, Like I'm trying. I never came up
- 28:34Speaker 4: with an example. But it's not like we're talking about
- 28:36Speaker 4: a dude who's like, ah, you know, he's he's just
- 28:40Speaker 4: so he did he won one batting title, he's won three.
- 28:44Speaker 2: He led the league last year and hits. I get it.
- 28:47Speaker 4: It's it's all it's batting average and no on base percentage.
- 28:51Speaker 2: It's fine, he struck out.
- 28:53Speaker 4: He had the lowest strikeout percentage last year since Tony
- 28:59Speaker 4: Gwynn take in nineteen ninety five. That was Sarah Lange's tweet.
- 29:03Speaker 4: It was something that was like, that's crazy in the
- 29:06Speaker 4: era where we're in where guys, whether they're better pitchers
- 29:10Speaker 4: or not, I'm not going to discuss that guys are
- 29:13Speaker 4: one hundred percent going for the strikeout.
- 29:15Speaker 2: That is it.
- 29:16Speaker 4: They are only going for the strikeout. Is Luis a
- 29:19Speaker 4: Rise as valuable as a Uhennio Suarez to a certain extent,
- 29:25Speaker 4: There's a value there. And the batting to win a
- 29:28Speaker 4: batting title is so ridiculously hard, and he's done it
- 29:32Speaker 4: three times, and like AJ said, like it just feels
- 29:36Speaker 4: it feels like we're like picking certain situations that it
- 29:40Speaker 4: was cool to win a batting title. But like, Luis
- 29:43Speaker 4: a Rise is going to one hundred raise his value
- 29:46Speaker 4: because of the fact that he plays second. If he
- 29:49Speaker 4: can play second base the entire year as a first baseman,
- 29:52Speaker 4: you can never sit there and go, well, is he
- 29:54Speaker 4: just the best defensive first baseman in the game?
- 29:57Speaker 2: No?
- 29:57Speaker 4: And then who else are you? Who else are you
- 29:59Speaker 4: finding dudes in Triple A who they probably would say,
- 30:02Speaker 4: we'd rather give his twenty five thirty home runs in
- 30:05Speaker 4: Triple A a shot in the big leagues before they
- 30:07Speaker 4: would Luisa Rise, which is a travesty to how tough
- 30:11Speaker 4: it is to win a batting title, let alone lead
- 30:14Speaker 4: the league, lead the National League in hits.
- 30:16Speaker 1: He turned down another multi year offers to play second
- 30:19Speaker 1: base for the Giants, a position that he wanted to
- 30:22Speaker 1: return to guys after playing first base for the Padres.
- 30:25Speaker 1: So the Giants now aj have an infield of Chapman
- 30:28Speaker 1: Adamis Arise Endeavors. It's pretty damn good.
- 30:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, who's going to pitch. This is a
- 30:33Speaker 3: question who's going to pitch behind Logan Webb But we'll see.
- 30:37Speaker 3: I guess, I guess Robbie Ray still there. But still
- 30:39Speaker 3: it's like it's like this, this is a nice not
- 30:42Speaker 3: a terrible lineup. I mean, I think Patrick baileys do
- 30:45Speaker 3: for a nice bounce back this year. Pryce Eldridge, if
- 30:48Speaker 3: he can hit, I mean, the top of the order
- 30:50Speaker 3: is as good as he gets. So we'll see. Let's
- 30:52Speaker 3: never get Hilario Bramos a couple of years ago was
- 30:55Speaker 3: projected to be like they were talking about him being
- 30:58Speaker 3: like a star star. So Vader can play nice centerfield.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Patrick Bailey's gonna bounce back. I don't hate this lineup.
- 31:03Speaker 3: I just I hate the fact that it took Luisa Rise.
- 31:07Speaker 3: We're talking about this for Luisa Rise because it just
- 31:09Speaker 3: he smiles all the time he puts the ball in play.
- 31:12Speaker 3: There's value in that that nobody wants to talk about.
- 31:16Speaker 1: No, it's just I don't know, is it because he's
- 31:17Speaker 1: just not driving guys in? But I mean, at least
- 31:20Speaker 1: he gets on base to be driven in.
- 31:22Speaker 3: But here's the thing about you're saying you doesn't drive
- 31:24Speaker 3: guys in. But what's the thing they always say RBIs
- 31:26Speaker 3: don't matter because it's a it's a matter of where
- 31:28Speaker 3: you are in the lineup, right, So it's like they
- 31:31Speaker 3: come up with excuses on why certain things matter depending
- 31:34Speaker 3: on who you are and how they like you and
- 31:36Speaker 3: what you're thinking about. Oh RBI's matter except for when
- 31:39Speaker 3: they don't. Batting average matters except for with this guy. Right,
- 31:42Speaker 3: Home runs matter, strikeouts matter except for with this guy.
- 31:44Speaker 3: It's like the whole, the whole thing to be just
- 31:47Speaker 3: doesn't make sense sometimes. But that's why I don't own
- 31:49Speaker 3: a team. That's why I don't run a team, because
- 31:51Speaker 3: I equip it feel like I don't know.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Well, I mean, that's just what you can make the numbers.
- 31:55Speaker 1: You can manipulate the numbers to solve any anything you
- 31:59Speaker 1: want him to say.
- 32:01Speaker 4: Same and and analytics feels like they're they're adverse, they're
- 32:06Speaker 4: they're completely unob they're subjective. I'm not using that word right,
- 32:12Speaker 4: objective and subjective. And that's what that's the whole reason
- 32:16Speaker 4: for analytics was, Oh, we don't we don't have our
- 32:18Speaker 4: feelings in this at all. Now you one hundred percent
- 32:21Speaker 4: have your feelings in it. We don't want ahneos. The
- 32:24Speaker 4: league doesn't want any Auheneo Suarez. Why because he strikes
- 32:27Speaker 4: out too much. He was fifth in baseball on homers,
- 32:31Speaker 4: hit forty nine home runs most years, that leads the league. Okay,
- 32:35Speaker 4: but you know he strikes out too much. His defense
- 32:38Speaker 4: isn't good enough. Well, brings the money down. How about
- 32:41Speaker 4: we talk about how good a player is and what
- 32:43Speaker 4: if what if he just.
- 32:44Speaker 2: Hits one home run this year?
- 32:46Speaker 4: What if what if Luisa rise hit gets one RBI
- 32:49Speaker 4: this year and that RBI pushes the Giants to the
- 32:53Speaker 4: playoffs and all twelve million, fifteen million, two years, twenty
- 32:57Speaker 4: four million, It all matters exactly what AJ said needs
- 33:02Speaker 4: to be clipped. It's all manipulated to make somebody look bad,
- 33:07Speaker 4: to make somebody look worse than what they really are,
- 33:10Speaker 4: and ultimately, the name of the game is winning as
- 33:14Speaker 4: many baseball games as possible. In Luis Arise on most teams,
- 33:19Speaker 4: playing second base is an upgrade.
- 33:22Speaker 1: One hundred and eighty one hits last year eight home runs.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Twenty twenty four, he had two hundred hits, and of course,
- 33:28Speaker 1: as we've mentioned, twenty two to twenty three to twenty
- 33:30Speaker 1: four batting title for that year. Pretty interesting to be
- 33:34Speaker 1: able to do that, pretty impressive to be able to
- 33:36Speaker 1: do that three years in a row. All right, let's
- 33:38Speaker 1: get to some more moves that were made this weekend
- 33:41Speaker 1: in hot corner. All right, I can't wait to get
- 33:52Speaker 1: the take on this one from AJ. The Chicago White
- 33:55Speaker 1: Socks have acquired right handed pitcher Jordan Hicks and David Sandlin,
- 33:59Speaker 1: cash considers, and two players to be named later from
- 34:02Speaker 1: the Boston Red Sox in exchange for right hander Gage
- 34:05Speaker 1: Zeal and a player to be named later. Jordan Hicks
- 34:10Speaker 1: not the best numbers last year with the Red Sox,
- 34:12Speaker 1: but I think the bigger piece of this puzzle AJ
- 34:14Speaker 1: is David Sandlin go into the socks, your socks? What say?
- 34:19Speaker 3: You uh cool supposed to say? I mean, we just
- 34:24Speaker 3: had this conversation about you know, we want to trade
- 34:26Speaker 3: prospects and let's listen, Sandland. You know he throws hard.
- 34:32Speaker 3: But if we looked at if you dig into his numbers, man, listen,
- 34:35Speaker 3: people are gonna say, oh, you know, I don't like
- 34:37Speaker 3: the white socks, but I just look at numbers, man, numbers.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Look at his walks, man, his walks are just not good.
- 34:44Speaker 3: Seventy six walks. You know, he has a lot of walks.
- 34:46Speaker 3: Just he strikes out a ton of guys, but he's
- 34:48Speaker 3: got a lot of walks. He's got a high ra
- 34:51Speaker 3: I mean, he's got a four almost a four four
- 34:53Speaker 3: era in the minor leagues. Yeah, like they got Jordan Hicks,
- 34:58Speaker 3: who can he's gonna pitch out of the According to
- 35:00Speaker 3: Chris Gatz, that helps him in the bullpen because I
- 35:03Speaker 3: think we figured out since he's gone to San Francisco,
- 35:04Speaker 3: he's definitely not a starter, right, he'll help in the
- 35:07Speaker 3: bullpen wherever he can come in and give you multiple
- 35:09Speaker 3: innings as a bullpen guy. So I like that, but
- 35:12Speaker 3: they're you know, they're still getting what they have to pay,
- 35:15Speaker 3: what twenty million of this sixteen million, I think they
- 35:18Speaker 3: they have left on the hook for Jordan Hicks.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Eight million of Hicks is twenty four.
- 35:24Speaker 3: Okay, So yeah, I mean, yeah, it's a it's a
- 35:27Speaker 3: move that you know, if Zeal's not gonna deal's not
- 35:30Speaker 3: gonna help you, zero deal deal, you know, not gonna
- 35:33Speaker 3: help you, then fine. But I don't. I mean, this
- 35:36Speaker 3: is just a move. It's like, oh, we're making moves now,
- 35:38Speaker 3: just to make moves, right, Like, look, we can make
- 35:40Speaker 3: a move and people say, we can tell people how
- 35:43Speaker 3: great this guy's gonna be. But again, I mean, Jordan Hicks, Okay,
- 35:48Speaker 3: but you're getting let your you know, for a team
- 35:50Speaker 3: money money challenge right now?
- 35:53Speaker 2: Cool?
- 35:53Speaker 4: Like, yes, go White Sox, good job, Chris gets hey, ja,
- 35:58Speaker 4: don't don't don't don't appeal to the masses. Does this
- 36:02Speaker 4: make the team better for the year that they're going
- 36:05Speaker 4: to win they're going to make the playoffs. I'm not
- 36:08Speaker 4: saying it this year. Whatever year you said in your
- 36:10Speaker 4: mind that the White Sox should be in the playoffs,
- 36:13Speaker 4: does this make their team better for that year?
- 36:17Speaker 3: I have no idea. I have no idea because I
- 36:19Speaker 3: just gave you his numbers. How do I know? How
- 36:21Speaker 3: do I know what this guy's going to be? Apparently
- 36:23Speaker 3: Boston didn't think. Boston was like we can get rid
- 36:25Speaker 3: of hicks. O.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Nobody knows what the hell Boston's doing. Boston is as
- 36:31Speaker 1: a mess.
- 36:32Speaker 3: But what I'm saying is is to answer cross this
- 36:34Speaker 3: question though, when are sallin going to help him this year?
- 36:37Speaker 3: And then maybe three years from now he figures out
- 36:40Speaker 3: how not to have a four to four e r
- 36:42Speaker 3: A in the minor league? Like you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 36:46Speaker 3: I don't know if this helps them, but I know
- 36:48Speaker 3: that it's a move to make a move, and I
- 36:50Speaker 3: like that at least they're trying to make some sort
- 36:52Speaker 3: of moves.
- 36:53Speaker 4: Okay, so maybe maybe a little bit above average. But
- 36:56Speaker 4: the Red Sox, we have a resident Red Sox fan.
- 37:00Speaker 4: You live right next to Fenway Park, so you're snowed in.
- 37:04Speaker 4: What are the Red Sox doing? They just they now
- 37:08Speaker 4: clear and I'm and I joked about it on Twitter
- 37:10Speaker 4: when you when you had mentioned when you put on
- 37:12Speaker 4: there like still waiting, Like they got rid of Rafael
- 37:15Speaker 4: Devers contract, that's massive. They got rid of now Jordan
- 37:19Speaker 4: Hicks contract. That was a massive amount of money. I
- 37:23Speaker 4: guess you know they didn't get rid of all of
- 37:24Speaker 4: it because the White Sox aren't paying all of it
- 37:26Speaker 4: or the pain a lot. And I said, Liverpool, they're.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Over there.
- 37:34Speaker 1: The Red Sox don't have a money problem. They have
- 37:36Speaker 1: a decision making problem, and they have a let's wait
- 37:39Speaker 1: around because we think people want to play with for
- 37:42Speaker 1: the Red Sox. Alec Bregman is now in Chicago because
- 37:45Speaker 1: the Red Sox left it on their laurels that oh,
- 37:47Speaker 1: he's going to want to come back. We're guaranteeing that
- 37:49Speaker 1: he's going to want to come back, so we're not
- 37:51Speaker 1: going to make a move and do anything else. Yes,
- 37:53Speaker 1: they signed Ranger Suarez and I guess that you know
- 37:55Speaker 1: that's okay, that's fine. But the thing is with the
- 37:57Speaker 1: Red like you let Raffael Dever go after the second
- 38:01Speaker 1: year or within his second year of a ten year deal.
- 38:04Speaker 1: So that just goes to show you if you're Bregman,
- 38:05Speaker 1: because the Red Sox don't give no full no trade clauses,
- 38:08Speaker 1: that's just going to show you that, you know what,
- 38:10Speaker 1: I still might be moved. And they saved two hundred
- 38:13Speaker 1: and something million dollars on Dever's contract and didn't put
- 38:15Speaker 1: the money anywhere. Jordan Hicks doesn't make enough money to
- 38:18Speaker 1: make a difference in their payroll. What are the Red
- 38:20Speaker 1: Sox doing?
- 38:22Speaker 2: You tell me? In the same snow as Fenway Park?
- 38:26Speaker 1: Ish god by the way? Uh. The White Socks are
- 38:30Speaker 1: also in agreement with free agent outfielder Austin Hayes, sources
- 38:33Speaker 1: telling ESPN Hayes He's thirty hit fifteen home runs in
- 38:36Speaker 1: one hundred and three games for Cincinnati last year. The
- 38:40Speaker 1: Socks were looking for a veteran outfielder, and Hayes fits
- 38:43Speaker 1: the bill. Guys, So here is the lineup, the projected
- 38:46Speaker 1: lineup anyway with Austin Hayes. So aj, I mean you
- 38:50Speaker 1: like this move at least in terms of proven talent
- 38:53Speaker 1: in Austin Hayes.
- 38:54Speaker 3: Yes, I get on board with this move. This is
- 38:57Speaker 3: the move that we've been saying the White Sox should
- 38:59Speaker 3: have made for years. Bring in a veteran guy that
- 39:01Speaker 3: helped can help some of the young guys, right, and
- 39:04Speaker 3: if he has a great first half and you're not
- 39:06Speaker 3: in contention, even though the White Sex are like, we're
- 39:08Speaker 3: gonna win the division. This year, you trade him and
- 39:11Speaker 3: you get some players back. This is the move that
- 39:14Speaker 3: you make. This is a smart move, the Murricami move.
- 39:16Speaker 3: It's only a two year deal. That's a good move.
- 39:19Speaker 3: Brooks Bald when Edwin Kiro look at this team, Vargas
- 39:22Speaker 3: Montgomery TiO Mydra, they need a veteran guy in there.
- 39:26Speaker 3: And listen, no offense to Andrew ben Attendi, but he
- 39:28Speaker 3: doesn't really go as not very outgoing. He's probably he's
- 39:31Speaker 3: a good guy, really good guy. But you need somebody
- 39:34Speaker 3: that can be a little outgoing and lead these guys.
- 39:37Speaker 3: And ben Attende's been there for a while now. So
- 39:40Speaker 3: these two guys, maybe Hayes and been attendee together can
- 39:43Speaker 3: talk to Brooks Wald when Kiro t o Mydra with
- 39:45Speaker 3: Montgomery teach him how to be big leaguers. I love
- 39:48Speaker 3: this move. This this is the move the white sexually
- 39:51Speaker 3: we make because it's only a one year deal. And
- 39:53Speaker 3: if he's great, you got something. And if he's not great,
- 39:56Speaker 3: or if he's great, you trade him and you get
- 39:59Speaker 3: something back in return, maybe in organization's ten best prospect
- 40:03Speaker 3: like they just did. If not, he teaches the young
- 40:06Speaker 3: guys what to do. But I would bet on Austin
- 40:07Speaker 3: Hays having a good year and coming out and helping
- 40:10Speaker 3: the White Sox be better.
- 40:14Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, it's value. I mean there is not physical
- 40:21Speaker 4: value there. Hicks might Jordan Hicks might save twenty games,
- 40:27Speaker 4: you know, Sir Anthony might save the other twenty games
- 40:30Speaker 4: for the White Sox. So I guess from a front
- 40:33Speaker 4: office standpoint, there's value there. But the value in Austin
- 40:37Speaker 4: Hayes is what he brings to exactly what AJ said.
- 40:42Speaker 4: So two completely different moves, two guys that have been
- 40:45Speaker 4: in the league, and most people would say Jordan Hicks
- 40:47Speaker 4: for his career, has had a better career than Austin Hayes.
- 40:51Speaker 4: If Austin Hayes can make an impact on one or
- 40:54Speaker 4: two of those prospects, those guys that are now solidifying
- 40:59Speaker 4: themselves in the big leagues, knowing what it takes to
- 41:01Speaker 4: be a big leaguer, knowing what it takes to win
- 41:03Speaker 4: in the big leagues, which is the next step, not
- 41:06Speaker 4: just hitting thirty home runs, it's winning in the big leagues,
- 41:11Speaker 4: then that contract will pay for itself fifty times over.
- 41:16Speaker 4: That's where that's where Bregman's value to the Red Sox
- 41:19Speaker 4: was last year. That's where Kyle Schwarber's value to the
- 41:23Speaker 4: Phillies is and the White Sox if they have a
- 41:27Speaker 4: chance to add another piece like this. We talked about
- 41:29Speaker 4: Zack Gallen before. If some of these pitchers in the
- 41:33Speaker 4: White Sox starting rotation, young pitchers are gonna be guys
- 41:37Speaker 4: that you're going to have up there for a decent
- 41:39Speaker 4: amount of time. Having a guy like Zach Gallon around.
- 41:42Speaker 4: He may cost you twenty two point three million dollars
- 41:46Speaker 4: whatever the whatever the qualifying offer is, it's probably about
- 41:50Speaker 4: what he'll get, but what he will pay back dividends
- 41:53Speaker 4: for the future. That's why I pose the question that
- 41:56Speaker 4: I did to aj because those type of things our
- 41:59Speaker 4: relationship and career building moments, when you bring guys like
- 42:03Speaker 4: that in, if they're the right fit for your young kids,
- 42:09Speaker 4: would the.
- 42:09Speaker 1: White Sox make sense or let me rephrase, this would
- 42:14Speaker 1: make White.
- 42:15Speaker 3: So he would make sense. But he ain't gonna go
- 42:18Speaker 3: there just to win, and he's not going to go there,
- 42:22Speaker 3: And it goes right back to the thing we talked
- 42:24Speaker 3: about with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Do you guys remember all
- 42:27Speaker 3: the polls that have come out recently, worst franchise to
- 42:30Speaker 3: play for teams we don't want to go to. You
- 42:33Speaker 3: don't want to do this. It's been the White Sox,
- 42:35Speaker 3: been the White Sox, been the White Sox, Right. So
- 42:38Speaker 3: you think Zach Allen's going to look at that, and
- 42:40Speaker 3: Zack Allen's gonna call someone like Lancelyn who played for
- 42:42Speaker 3: the White Sox, right, or he's gonna call someone Todd
- 42:45Speaker 3: Frazier or someone that's been there recently and say, hey,
- 42:48Speaker 3: what did you guys think of this? And he's gonna say, well,
- 42:51Speaker 3: I guess what. The White Sox are gonna have to
- 42:52Speaker 3: grossly overpay to get someone like Zach Gallen, even if
- 42:55Speaker 3: it's just for one year, because most guys and they
- 42:57Speaker 3: go on one year deals when they go to prove it,
- 42:59Speaker 3: they want to go to a winner because you always
- 43:00Speaker 3: look good on a winning team, right, So they'd have
- 43:05Speaker 3: to massively overpay. And one thing we've learned about the
- 43:07Speaker 3: White Sox recently, they're not going to massively overpay the.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Man that just like the Pirates, like you said, they're
- 43:12Speaker 1: not going to massively overpay either. I mean they could
- 43:14Speaker 1: have had far as they would have just up the
- 43:16Speaker 1: ante at a couple of million a year, I.
- 43:18Speaker 3: Can't argue with that, if you know, if you really,
- 43:20Speaker 3: if deep down in your heart of hearts, you don't
- 43:22Speaker 3: think that you can compete, then you don't overpay unless
- 43:24Speaker 3: you're unless you're the Nationals and you have Jason Worth
- 43:27Speaker 3: sitting there and you think eventually he's going to lead
- 43:29Speaker 3: to a World Series title, and you don't think Zach
- 43:31Speaker 3: Allen's going to be there, then you don't do it right.
- 43:33Speaker 3: But the Nationals got what they wanted. They won the
- 43:35Speaker 3: World Series with Jason Worth, and because you know then
- 43:38Speaker 3: they strawspertures are all these guys showed up. The Tigers,
- 43:41Speaker 3: Pud Rodriguez, Maglei, Ardonias, they were the first ones. Now,
- 43:45Speaker 3: unfortunately the Tigers never won a World Series, but they
- 43:47Speaker 3: got there and they competed for a long time and
- 43:49Speaker 3: that was kind of the start of it. So when
- 43:51Speaker 3: you think you're in that window, you go for it.
- 43:53Speaker 3: The Cubs did it with John Lester, John Lackey, Jason Hayward. Right,
- 43:56Speaker 3: They're like, where this is our chance, Dexter Fowler, We're
- 43:59Speaker 3: going for it. They brought in these veterans with Schwarber,
- 44:01Speaker 3: Brian Rizzo, these younger guys, Contreres, and it worked out
- 44:04Speaker 3: it doesn't always work out, but you got to pick
- 44:07Speaker 3: your time, and when you pick that time, you gotta go.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Okay time now to Slaphands, gentlemen, we appreciate, uh you
- 44:14Speaker 1: guys letting me be here today. David robertson retiring, Good
- 44:19Speaker 1: for him.
- 44:19Speaker 3: He had a great career, Hey, Jay cutters and curveballs,
- 44:26Speaker 3: and he was the last one on.
- 44:27Speaker 1: The two thousand and nine Yankees team right that one
- 44:31Speaker 1: World Series with the Yanks. It was the last one
- 44:33Speaker 1: that was still active.
- 44:34Speaker 3: Correct, What a career, Great career for a guy when
- 44:38Speaker 3: he a gymnast coming out of Alabama, when he like
- 44:40Speaker 3: a gymnast growing up, and great calves, great calves.
- 44:44Speaker 4: Great Caves, great Kass, admirable calves. And it's really fastball.
- 44:49Speaker 4: I wasn't even a cutter. His fastball would just cut.
- 44:52Speaker 4: And he tried to throw a sinker and it was
- 44:54Speaker 4: a four steamer. Great teammate, like always smiled very uh,
- 45:01Speaker 4: very big into facial expressions when he pitched, go back
- 45:04Speaker 4: and look into one curveball that he that he hit
- 45:07Speaker 4: Gary Sanchez with. So his his reaction is pretty much
- 45:12Speaker 4: the same as everybody's reaction.
- 45:13Speaker 2: But good for you, d Rob. What a guy.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Yeah, congratulations on a heck of a career. H pleasure
- 45:21Speaker 1: to watch him play pitch for all those all those years.
- 45:24Speaker 1: All right, tomorrow, Scott Braun is back. It's exciting. Harrison
- 45:30Speaker 1: Vaders is going to be on the show. Yeah, Harrison Vaders.
- 45:35Speaker 3: Tomorrow.
- 45:37Speaker 1: New York Yankees pitcher Ryan Weathers. But that's right, because
- 45:39Speaker 1: it didn't Bader go to Florida. He's a UF guy.
- 45:42Speaker 3: He did, yes after I had to wear the sweatshirt today,
- 45:45Speaker 3: after Florida whooped Alabama and basketball and the coach guaranteed
- 45:49Speaker 3: they would whoop their ass, and they whooped that ass. Okay,
- 45:53Speaker 3: even with an NBA player, even with all I hear about.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Is I will be in Kingsville in May for Morgan Wallin.
- 46:02Speaker 1: All right, you guys, steel are crats. What's your hat?
- 46:05Speaker 4: Columbus Clippers? I mean played there. I watched Richie hit
- 46:09Speaker 4: tons of dingers in the bushes.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Thanks for coming on the show, Richie. Thanks to John
- 46:16Speaker 1: coming on and Jim as well, our territory. We'll see
- 46:19Speaker 1: you guys. Smort I
